A century of Goodwill
By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY – For Joe Tornielli, it ranks as a great discovery. The manager of a Ramseybased department store had spent the last eight years in a Wayne apartment and wanted new digs. He’d driven past the Vermella Lyndhurst development and then saw a Google announcement about Vermella Crossing in Kearny. “I came to the site the day before they opened the sales office but they let me in and we got everything going,” Tornielli recalled. In July, he became the first tenant at the 150-unit residential complex along Bergen Ave. built by Russo Development of Carlstadt. Today, the almost-completed six-building complex is reported to be two-thirds leased and, of those units, about half are occupied. Full occupancy is projected by March 2016. A ribbon-cutting was held last Tuesday. Developer Ed Russo, meanwhile, said he’s hoping to complete acquisition of commercial properties on the north side of Bergen, just off Schuyler Ave., “before the end of 2016” which he plans to tear down and replace with an additional 80 rental units. see VERMELLA page

According to the supplier, Passaic Valley Water Commission, “Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples
than allowed [by water testing standards] and this was a warning of potential problems.” Of the 59 samples taken during September throughout the borough water system, six showed the presence of the coliform bacteria, PVSC said.

KPD: In the wrong at ShopRite A
Oct. 9 At 7:30 p.m., Officers Sean Kelly and Dominic Dominguez responded to the Walmart lot on several reports of a woman in a Jeep acting erratically. They arrived to find Jennifer Southard, 34, of Rockaway, asleep behind the wheel of the still-running vehicle, with an open bottle of Smirnoff Ice in the cup holder, police said. Despite repeated attempts, they were unable to awaken her and had to force open the door to turn off the engine, police said. Following field sobriety tests, she was charged with DWI and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Oct. 10 Officers Daniel Esteves and

Chris Manolis, on patrol at Kearny and Johnston Aves. at 8 p.m., observed a man drinking from a 32 oz. bottle of Coors. When they approached to issue a town ordinance violation, the man reportedly identified himself as Juan Carlos. However, police said Esteves knew that was not his name. Edwardo Espinosa, 53, of Kearny, got the drinking-inpublic summons, along with a charge of hindering apprehension. Police said he also had a $250 Kearny warrant for drinking in public, under the alias Carlos Guiterrez. Oct. 11 Officers Kelly and Dominguez were dispatched at 3 p.m. to an accident at Hickory and Pine Sts. and found in the roadway an unoccupied 2013 Kia with heavy front-end damage. Police said witnesses identified a man walking east on Pine as the Kia driver, who had hit a parked car. When Kelly and Dominguez stopped him about a block away, he reportedly was swaying and had about him the odor of alcohol. Following FSTs, Osvaldo Desousa, 23, of Harrison, was charged with DWI, reckless driving, abandonment of a vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and refusing to take an Alcotest. Oct. 13 At 9:30 a.m., on the 100 block of Devon St., Vice detectives arrested Lou Lutrario, 47, of Kearny, on a $782 North Arlington warrant. shoplifting suspect escalated the charge against him from theft to robbery last week when he allegedly assaulted two ShopRite employees who tried to stop him from leaving the store with ill-gotten goods, Kearny police reported. He ended up in the Hudson County Jail on $50,000 bail. KPD units, called to the Passaic Ave. supermarket at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, were told that the man had struck the two workers and was now fleeing on foot. Officer Giovanni Rodriguez got the suspect’s description and direction of flight, and Sgt. Charles Smith located him on Marshall St. (See Google maps.) In addition to robbery, Elijah Easterling, 21, of East Orange, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia (a crack pipe). Police said he also had a $315 criminal warrant from East Orange and a $250 Kearny warrant on a prior shoplifting charge. What had he allegedly tried to steal this time? According to police, $106 worth of soap and body wash. To quote one law enforcement source who has (justifiably) asked to remain anonymous: “He must have thought he could make a clean getaway, but he got into quite a lather at the store.” ••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:

or nearly a week, law enforcement was hunting the hit-run driver who allegedly struck a 22-year-old woman on Rt. 46 in Clifton on Oct. 9 and left her lying in the roadway, critically injured. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has now identified that driver as Michael Choynowski, 27, of North Arlington, who surrendered to authorities last Thursday, Oct. 15. Choynowski has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, and with endangering an injured victim. Each count carries a sentence of three to five years. The complaint alleges that, at approximately 12:03 a.m. on Oct. 9, Choynowski was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck eastbound on the highway near the Valley Road exit in
charges against Choynowski resulted from “an intensive investigation” by her office’s Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Clifton Police Department. That investigation reportedly included reviewing video from the area of the accident, interviews with witnesses, and subsequent identification of the truck and its driver and recovery of the vehicle. A spokesman for the PCPO told The Observer on Friday PCPO that Choynowski was released Michael Choynowski on bail, which had been set at Clifton when he hit pedestrian $30,000 with a 10% option. Handgun recovered after disturbance on NJ Transit bus in Nutley A
disturbance on an NJ Transit bus on Washington Ave. led to the arrest of a Newark man on an unlawful possession of a weapon charge, according to Nutley police. On Oct. 15, police said they received a call about people causing a disturbance on the bus and while checking the backgrounds of passengers, they discovered Jaquan Daniels, 22, of Newark, had an outstanding warrant out of Newark. When they searched Daniel after cuffing him, police said they found a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun in a fanny pack he was wearing around his waist. Daniels was remanded to the Essex County Jail after he was unable to post $25,000 bail, the NPD said. Meanwhile, the NPD released the following reports of incidents that took place between Oct. 10 and Oct. 16: Oct. 10 Nedzad Kolenovic, 44, of Nutley, was arrested on outstanding warrants from Nutley, Clifton and Toms River. Police said they responded to a dispute call on Frank-
lin Ave. and later learned of Kolenovic’s warrants. He was released after posting bail and was advised to contact each of the three towns’ courts to get new appearance dates. Oct. 12 • A Washington Ave. resident told police nearly $500 worth of items had been stolen from a car parked on his driveway. The resident told police the car had been left unlocked overnight. Police said there was no sign of forced entry into the car. • A motorcycle was stolen from a River Road residence, the NPD said. The victim told police that when he’d left for work that morning at 7 a.m., the motorcycle was properly locked in a well-lit area, but it was gone by the time he returned home from work. The resident also said he was the only person who had a key to the bike and a lock that was used to secure it. Oct. 13 A Newark man was charged with possession of burglary tools and on an outstanding Jersey City warrant after residents of an apartment complex reported suspicious

activity in the complex’s parking lot. Police said they found Jose Herrera, 31, who matched a description given by a caller, near the apartment complex. When they ran a warrant check on him, they learned he was wanted by Jersey City. When Herrera was searched after being cuffed, police said they found a metal lug-nut wrench in his waist. Herrera posted bail for the warrant and the burglary-tool possession charge and was released, pending court appearances. Oct. 14 A motor-vehicle stop on Passaic Ave. led to the arrest of Dejon Wilson, 29, of Nutley, on an outstanding Nutley warrant. After they pulled Wilson over, police said they learned of the warrant and that he was driving on a sus-
pended driver’s license and registration, for which he was ticketed. He was additionally issued a summons for having an obstructed windshield. Wilson was unable to post bail for the warrant and was transported to NPD HQ , where he waited to go to court later that day. Oct. 15 A Grant Ave. resident told police two of his vehicles were burgled overnight. The victim told police that while nothing appeared to have been taken from the cars, it was evident they’d been rummaged through. Police said the two vehicles were likely left unlocked while parked in a driveway the night before. Oct. 16 A resident reported being victim to fraud.

Police said the victim got a pop-up screen that directed him to call an 800 number to have a virus removed from his Macintosh computer. The victim told police he called the number and allowed the person who answered his call remote access to the computer. Later, he found a $599.99 charge on a credit card to Ease My Tech that wasn’t authorized. The victim canceled the credit-card account and fortunately, the charge was wiped from his account. When the world held its breath over nuclear showdown By Ron Leir
T
hink back to those halcyon days of 1962: the New York Mets had made their appearance on the baseball landscape, I had recently started high school and Halloween was just around the corner. But if it was scary moments for which you craved that October, there was no need to go for spooky costumes and ghost stories: Scary was right there, in-your-face fear in the real world. For it was during those last two weeks of October 1962 that the U.S. and Russia went toeto-toe in what became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. As you of that generation no doubt, recall a U.S. spy plane had confirmed the presence of medium- and intermediaterange nuclear missiles stationed at the Caribbean island, courtesy of Russia. And the Pentagon had drawn up charts showing that folks in Miami – along with other U.S. cities – would be wiped out when those missiles were launched, despite Castro’s reported very real concerns about American retaliation.
The Kennedy administration – following the shooting down of a U.S.U-2 spy plane in 1960, failed Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961 and the U.S.-imposed Cuban embargo in February 1962 – opted for a Navy blockade of the island to stop the shipment of further missiles from Russia as both countries debated the issue before the U.N. Nuclear “fallout” shelters were all the rage. All of that was the backdrop for this new crisis – which, as you recall – was finally settled by an agreement that Russia would remove its nuclear weapons from Cuba in exchange for the U.S. pulling out its weapons from Europe. The U.S. Navy blockade of Cuba, however, remained in effect through late November ’62, as has the embargo until the recently concluded agreement Wikipedia to re-establish a U.S. embassy in Havana and a partial lifting siles aimed at Russia that the to do next, several of his miliof the trade block. Get guidance on pre-planning funerals No one wants to think about their death or the death of a loved one any sooner than necessary. But making difficult decisions in advance about cemetery arrangements can ease the anxiety for a grieving family by lifting much of the burden in making final arrangements. “When there is a death in the family and loved ones are experiencing a great deal of emotional pain and suffering, the worries of last-minute funeral arrangements and burial services should not become part of the grieving process,” said Andrew P. Schafer, executive director of the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark. “When you take charge of making these plans beforehand, it makes it less difficult and certainly much kinder to your family.” Pre-planning a memorial and pre-selecting a burial option is a growing trend in the United States. A Kearny man was killed in the aftermath of a single car accident on the Garden State Parkway early Monday, Oct. 19. State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams said that a beige Chevrolet Cavalier, operated by Ryan Steel, 25, was traveling southbound in the left lane near Marker 571 in Little Egg Harbor at 3:14 a.m. when he apparently lost control of the vehicle. Based on a preliminary
investigation, Williams said it appeared that the car rolled off the right side of the highway and crashed into a tree, entrapping the driver. Emergency medical technicians responded and Steel was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s office at 4:55 a.m. Next of kin was notified by the State Police. The accident remains under investigation, Williams said.

the collective consciousness. But empower, Goodwill did, and has continued to do over the generations. As it has continued to inspire both its clients and the communities it serves. In 1915, the Rev. Dr. Henry Park Schauffler and the Rev. Edward F. Sanderson, founded an organization in Brooklyn “to help persons with disabilities and disadvantages achieve self-sufficiency.” Later that year, they traveled to Massachusetts to study something
Brooklyn, and Helms adopted the Brooklyn program’s name: Goodwill Industries. Lori Friedman, senior vice president of the Northern N.J. division, explained that the concept was “a hand up, not a hand-out.” In Brooklyn, Friedman said, the Goodwill workers mended clothing and repaired furniture and then sold the items. “It helped their self-esteem,” she noted. Linda Turner, executive VP of services and workforce development in Harrison, told us how the customers benefitted, too: The workers were
Goodwill Industries of Greater N.Y. and Northern N.J. (Goodwill NYNJ, for short.) The thrift shops, the cornerstone of 1915 Goodwill, continue to be popular, and are probably the closest most people get to the organization. Including Harrison’s store, at 400 Supor Blvd., there are nine Goodwill shops across north-
ern Jersey. Sales proceeds support Goodwill programs, and the stores themselves provide training and work, “empowering individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to gain independence,” the organization notes. But Goodwill is so much more than its stores. Goodwill
NYNJ serves 11 counties in North Jersey. A press release issued for the 100th anniversary explained: “The nonprofit organization partners with the N.J. Vocational Rehabilitation agency, other nonprofit agencies, corporations and foundations. see GOODWILL page

As described on the history page of the Goodwill website, “Helms’ innovative new program collected donations of gently used goods and hired people in need to repair, clean and sell the items. This allowed his clients to earn needed income while acquiring valuable skills.” Schauffler and Sanderson adopted Helms’ methods in
repairing goods so that people who otherwise “didn’t have the means, could afford to buy them.” Added Turner, “Goodwill was one of the original recyclers.” So true. Goodwill’s growth was rapid. By 1919, it had established its first New Jersey center, at St. Paul’s Community House in Jersey City. A center was opened in Manhattan in 1922. Local chapters spread and in 1962, the Brooklyn and Manhattan operations merged. In 2000, Northern New Jersey Goodwill joined in to form

Kearny boys’ and girls’ soccer teams move on to Hudson County finals

Kearny’s Ruela heads Rutgers-Newark women’s soccer Although she’s still just 25 years old and not that far removed from her playing days at Kearny High School, Ariana Ruela is the head coach of a prestigious women’s soccer program at RutgersNewark. “I never dreamed it could happen to me this quickly, especially not at 25,” said Ruela, who is enjoying her first year as a college head coach, leading the Scarlet Raiders to a 12-4-1 record and more than likely a berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs, which are set to begin in two weeks. “But being a head coach was definitely one of the paths I wanted to go in,” Ruela said. Ruela has been coaching for the last 10 years. That’s right, she began her coaching career with the famed Den of Lions soccer program when she was just 15 years old. “I got my license to coach back then,” Ruela said. “I was coaching the Den of Lions U-8 (8-years-old and younger) boys’ team. The most awkward thing is that those kids are now all in high school. When I was still in high school, coaching is what
I wanted to do. I fell in love with inspiring kids. I love helping them get better.” However, when Ruela left Kearny after a highly successful playing career and went off to play NCAA Division I soccer at James Madison University, coaching was not exactly on her mind. “I wanted to get into the field of international affairs,” said Ruela, who graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs from James Madison in 2012. “I now have my master’s in global affairs (from Rutgers-Newark). It’s something that I really got involved in. I spent the summers in Brazil in the Coaches Across the Continents program.” Ruela was a brilliant player for the Kardinals, tallying 67 goals and collecting 56 assists during her fine career at Kearny. Ruela also had a chance to play with the Portugal U-19 program, enhancing her international resume. “I’m half Portuguese and half Norwegian,” Ruela said. “Go figure that mix.” But branching out and see VIEW page

The Kearny boys’ leading scorer is John Najarro (l.), who scored twice in the Kards’ 3-0 win over Harrison. The Kearny girls’ leading scorer is Amber Crispin (r.), who also scored two goals in the Kards’ 4-0 win over North Bergen. Both teams will vie for county championships Saturday at Harrison High.

She’s also fortunate to have a good bunch of players around her, creating more opportunities for her.” Isabel Fernandes had a goal and an assist for the winners, while Lily Durning scored the other goal. Merrin Keim had a solid game defensively for the Kardinals, who now own a 14-3 record overall. “It was just her ability to start the attack from the back,” Almeida said of Keim. “She did a great job.” Almeida had some apprehension about playing North Bergen again so quickly after facing the Bruins in the regular season. The Kardinals beat North Bergen, also by a 4-0 score, last Wednesday, so they faced North Bergen in back-to-

back games, with McClelland recording shutouts in each game. “North Bergen always likes to play us tough,” Almeida said. “They came out hard (Sunday) and deserve a lot of credit for the way they played. Those kids work hard every second.” The Kearny boys had to face their neighborhood rival once again, just a few weeks after soundly defeating them in Red Bull Arena by a 5-1 margin. “There are always the concerns of playing Harrison, but even more so when
we beat them the first time,” said Kearny boys’ soccer head coach Bill Galka. “I figured that they would come out harder and play a little differently than the first time. I figured they had the revenge factor on their side. But I was pretty confident with the way we’ve been playing.” The Kardinals are still undefeated on the season, posting a 15-0-1 record, good for the No. 4 ranking in the entire state. “I figured that if we played our game, we would be in good shape,” Galka said. “That’s what we did.”

John Najarro, who scored two goals the first time the two teams played at Red Bull Arena, found the net twice on Sunday as well. The sophomore striker now has 20 goals on the season. “He scored the first two goals for us and got us going,” Galka said. “Kenny Santos set him up pretty good with nice passes.” Santos got assists on both of Najarro’s goals. Juan Zapata scored the other Kardinal goal Sunday. Oscar Alvarado stopped seven shots to earn the clean sheet. “Oscar has been good in goal,” Galka said. “He didn’t have to make too many saves. He did make one stop early in the game. It was big, because if they scored early, you never know what could happen.” Galka was concerned about the conditions at Don Ahern Memorial Veterans Stadium Sunday, which is located right on the Newark Bay. It’s always cold and windy there, but Sunday, it was a little more than just cold and windy. It was blustery and borderline December weather, not midOctober.
“It was definitely pretty windy,” Galka said. “The wind was coming across the field, so we had to keep the ball close to the ground. But we have been playing well, so that would never be a bother.” Galka loves the play of his defensive back unit, with players like Cord Montanino and Damien Kolodziej leading the way. “We’re solid through the back,” Galka said. “I think that’s the strength of the team. We have a really strong corps back there. Our midfield is also pretty solid. Najarro’s up to 20 goals in the front. So we have a nice unit.” Galka does have some worries about facing Union City a third time, especially after the Kards knocked off the Soaring Eagles twice already. “It’s always tricky playing someone a third time,” Galka said. “But we’re playing pretty well, so it’s all good right now.” And it’s all good for both the Kearny boys and Kearny girls, as they shoot to hold onto the title of being Hudson County’s finest. After all, teams from Soccertown, USA are simply supposed to win, right?
Kearny Bank hosts business program In an informal talk to business leaders at Kearny Bank headquarters in Fairfield. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Bracken touted two initiatives designed to boost New Jersey’s economy: funding the state’s Transportation Trust Fund and eliminating or greatly reducing the individual estate tax. “We need to find a permanent, long-term, dedicated funding solution to our Transportation Trust Fund,” Bracken said. “The money generated would be used solely for investing in the state’s infrastructure, critical to New Jersey’s business community. And the Legislature must address the estate tax that is causing many residents to flee to lower-tax states.” In addition, Bracken stressed that New Jersey needs to better exploit its strengths. “Our business environment consistently ranks low among states when, in fact, we have much to offer,” he stated. In particular, he cit-

VIEW from having a diverse career was always the goal. “I guess I’ve always traveled a lot,” Ruela said. “When I went to JMU, I already knew what I wanted to study, how I could relate to the world in everyday living. I really didn’t see myself doing anything else.” However, Ruela has managed to get involved in other things as well. She is currently employed by the New York Red Bulls as a clinician and physical trainer in the Red Bulls’ training program. “I was just a college kid looking for a job,” Ruela said. “I saw an advertisement that the Red Bulls were looking for someone. I figured, ‘I’m from Kearny and it’s right next door.’ So I gave it a shot and got the job. It’s very demanding, but it’s a good thing.” How does anyone juggle that kind of a schedule – coaching, working, going to school? “It’s the one thing I have to thank my mom (Tory) for,” Ruela said. “She taught me how to manage my time well. She was able to push me harder than anyone. I think knowing how to handle it is

I’m very organized, but there are times where I wish there were more hours in the day.” Two years ago, then-Rutgers-Newark head coach Bill Bustamante asked Ruela to join his coaching staff as a graduate assistant. “Billy was my club soccer coach,” Ruela said. “So we go way back. We were just talking one day and he asked

if I would be interested in the grad assistant job.” It enabled Ruela to work toward her master’s while coaching soccer with the R-N women’s program. “It just sort of took off from there,” said Ruela, who joined the R-N staff in 2013. Ruela was an assistant coach last season. When Bustamante left the program last summer, R-N athletic director Mark Griffin didn’t have to look far for Bustamante’s replacement. “Ariana’s experience with the team and her extensive playing and coaching background make her a great fit for this transition,” Griffin said. “She has been a integral part of the success and improvement we have seen over the last two years, and I believe she will continue to push our program to the next level.”
Ruela didn’t hesitate to accept the offer to become the head coach. “It wasn’t even a second thought,” Ruela said. “I didn’t have much time to think about it. It totally came out of left field and completely unexpected, but I accepted the challenge. It’s not something I pursued, but it’s something I definitely wanted. I love challenging and developing young adults.” Ruela has inherited a roster that is perhaps the most talented in the history of the program, led by two players in Cristina Estremera and Sara Corson who have Division I playing experience. The fine regular season mark could lead to a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III tournament next month. “We have an extremely

talented and hard-working group,” Ruela said. “I feel like they’re ready to take the next step.” So here she is, a Kearny girl, all of 25 years old, heading a college soccer team. “It’s surreal how this all happened so quickly,” Ruela said. “I had to get to work right away and had to keep things going the right way. We’re having a pretty good season. I just keep climbing up the mountain. It’s really awesome to see things going in a positive direction. There is a sense of satisfaction to see the hard work I put in and the obstacles I had to get past pay off.” And Ruela doesn’t foresee her life changing any time soon. “I love it,” Ruela said. “For me, I’m the happiest when I’m on the field.”

Steck would have had more goals, but the weather gods weren’t helping. Steck had three goals in the original game against West Essex last week, but heavy rain came before the match reached halftime, postponing the game for a day, forcing the game to be replayed in its entirety a day later. So Steck lost two goals to the rains, because she scored one goal a day later in the win over West Essex. “I was so upset about that,” Steck said. “We were playing so well the first day. Steck’s praises. “We’re lucky to have a girl like her,” DiPiano said. “She does everything for us.” Steck credits her teammates for getting her the ball in good scoring position. “There’s always pressure on the one who has to take the shot, but I feel comfortable with my teammates,” Steck said. “It helps to take the pressure off of me. I felt strong coming into the season with the freshmen we had coming in. We’ve come together well. We’re working hard as a team.” The Maroon Raiders currently have a 9-7 record as they prepare to face Bloomfield in the opening round of the Essex County Tourna-
ment. Nutley is the fifth seed in the tourney. “I don’t care what our record is,” said DiPiano, whose team has lost four games in overtime this season, twice to Livingston. “I don’t think anyone wants to play us, either in the county tournament or in the states (the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III playoffs upcoming). We could be dangerous.” And it helps having Steck as his striker. “I think she’s getting hot at the right time,” DiPiano said of her six-goal barrage in the past week. “It certainly helps us a great deal.” Although Steck is still only a junior, she already has her future mapped out. She has
already accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Connecticut and will head to Storrs in two years to continue her soccer career there. Steck is pleased to have the decision about college out of the way. “It’s a huge load off my shoulders,” Steck said. “The whole college thing was very stressful. Last year was the key recruiting year. I had to deal with it with my club team as well. It was crazy for a while.” DiPiano said that Steck was receiving offers when she was a freshman. “For a 15-year-old girl to be pulled in all different directions, it was tough,” DiPiano said. “I think she handled it well. She had to make sure
that UConn was the right fit and it was. If you’re that good, then it’s a great decision to come out early and make the commitment.” Steck agreed. “Once I figured out where I wanted to go, I felt more relaxed,” Steck said. “It was a perfect situation for me. I’m happy to be going to UConn.” It doesn’t hurt that UConn is currently ranked No. 15 in the entire country. “I think it will be great for me,” Steck said. “Right now, I honestly have no idea what I would want to major in there. There are so many opportunities for me to do what I want to do.” For now, Steck is enjoying her junior year as the leader of
17
the Maroon Raiders. “It’s kind of cool that people look at us as underdogs this year,” Steck said. “We’re working hard to see how we can beat the teams that beat us earlier. No one thinks we stand a chance. I’m hopeful that we can pull some upsets.” DiPiano is obviously pleased. “She’s doing what we expected of her,” DiPiano said. “I never have to worry about Zoe. She does things that we ask and things we don’t ask. She just wants to score. She’s looking to score more in practice. She has that kind of intensity and she’s done a great job leading the team.” That’s all any coach could ask for.

If you ever had doubts that all human senses are connected and routed through the brain, the FDA has recently given approval to a device that enables blind individuals to use their tongues to sense visual images. The battery-powered apparatus consists of a tiny video camera mounted on a pair of sunglasses that connects by wire to a square piece of plastic that looks like a lollipop, which is inserted in the user’s mouth and sits on the tongue. As the video camera captures images, it converts them to electrical impulses that are relayed to electrodes in the “lollipop.” These impulses are felt on the tongue as vibrations, which users learn to interpret as objects that are positioned ahead of them.

VERMELLA from “We’re still waiting for some existing leases to expire,” he explained. Still in the works is another Russo project to redevelop a portion of the east side of Passaic Ave. to create a 458-unit residential complex for which Russo and the town are in negotiations on a redevelopment agreement. And there are other Russo developments on the drawing board in Bergen, Essex and Union counties. Meanwhile, the one- and two-bedroom apartments at Vermella Crossing are filling up. Each unit is outfitted with hardwood floors, quartz countertops in kitchens and bathrooms, stainless steel appliances, full-size washers and dryers, pendant lighting and kitchen tile backsplashes. One-bedroom units are renting from $1,665 to $1,735 a month while two-bedrooms are going for a range of $2,295 to $2,375, according to Vermella operations director John Yurkow. For a $30 a month amenities fee, residents can use the

There is a combination of garage and surface parking available; garage spaces are optional at $150 per month. Mayor Alberto Santos hailed the project as an actualization of part of the town’s “redevelopment vision,” in which Russo, “when you include costs of land acquisition, cleanup and construction, has made a $30 million investment and we’re
looking forward to the next phase across the street.” The mayor insisted, however, that the project “would not have happened without a long-term [30-year] tax abatement,” which translates to a first-year PILOT (payment in lieu of taxation) to the town of $375,000 which, he noted, is “five times more” than what Kearny was getting when the property was dormant. Future PILOTs could be higher, Santos said, due to a formula that adjusts payment

In New Jersey, Goodwill offers rehabilitation, vocational, and employment services to individuals with all types of disabilities, career services for mid-level retail workers, and employment services for unemployed or underemployed New Jersey residents. Last year, the Harrison headquarters became home to the Career Counseling & Learning Center, offering free programs to those aforementioned unemployed and underemployed: help with resumes, job interview preparation, computer training, job search skills, networking, etc. There’s even more in Harrison, including: • A special program, with staff fluent in American Sign Language, is available to the deaf and hard-of-hearing in cooperation with Jewish Vocational Services. • High school students are offered instruction to prepare them for their transition to
waiting for the project’s construction to be finished and the remaining units to be occupied. Tornielli said the Russo staff “has been phenomenal” in dealing with some minor maintenance issues that cropped up. “My ceiling fan was wobbling a little but they fixed it in less than 24 hours,” he said. “And the amenities are great. Being a renter for 20 years of my life, I’ve never been made to feel at home like this. I love it here.” work or college. • This month, Hudson County Community College is set to start offering computer classes at the Supor Blvd. building. And there’s still more. For information about all of Goodwill’s services, thrift shops and programs, visit www.goodwillnynj.org. You may be surprised. We wonder if Goodwill’s founders had any idea of how their organization would grow, or of the multitudes it would help, over the decades. (The current estimate is 94,000 people annually across N.Y. and N.J.) However, we do believe that the Revs. Schauffler, Sanderson and Helms were gazing down at the crowd who gathered at 400 Supor Blvd. last week for the anniversary celebration -- games, prizes, crafts, entertainment, refreshments -- and wishing they could join the party. We’re sure they were there in spirit, so to speak.

We, the family of Daniel J. Gilmore,... ...would like to express our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to our family and friends for their assistance, prayers, and thoughtfulness during this most difficult and trying time. While it is difficult to thank each and every individual personally, we cannot forget those who stood by our side while our hearts were breaking and gave so willingly of themselves. We are comforted by the overwhelming pride for the manner in which Danny was placed in such high regard. Thank you for giving him a tribute that our family and friends could never forget We would especially like to thank the following; Monsignor Desmond, St. Aloysius of Caldwell, Father Bill Fadrowski and Father Scott of Queen of Peace. Frank X. Mulligan for his exceptional services in giving our father/husband a proper and dignified farewell. North Arlington, Harrison and Kearny Police and Fire Departments for sacrificing and volunteering their time, thus providing a glorious and heart felt tribute. The NA Jr. Vikings, NA Little league, NA Boys Basketball, NA Girls Softball, and NA Recreation for the outpouring of love, respect and admiration from coaches, teammates and parents from whom Danny shared the past 8 years of his life. The memories are ones everlasting and will continue to comfort us through life. Finally, our most cherished and greatest thanks to those who gave and are still contributing to the GoFundMe account for his children and the Danny J. Gilmore Scholarship Fund, PO Box 32, Kearny, NJ 07032. The money raised will aid in giving young athletes the opportunity to pursue their academic and athletic dreams while keeping the memory of Danny alive.

borough follow his lead and hire an outside lab to do sampling and analysis. But Borough Administrator Stephen Lo Iacono and Mayor Joseph Bianchi – who, along with Councilman Dan Pronti, met with PVSC’s principal engineer and lab manager last week – said they were persuaded that the utility had done all that could be expected to do and that it would continue its weekly monitoring of the water system. Moreover, Lo Iacono said, PVSC is “going to expand its sampling and put [Angelo’s] home and business on a testing rotation” to keep track of his situation. At this point, he added, there appears to be “no danger whatsoever” to the borough’s water system. “We were told this was a very transitory thing, with the levels of the reservoir being down contributing to concentrations of bacteria.” “Remember now,” Bianchi
said, “it hasn’t rained significantly in three months so the water is low in the Passaic Valley reservoirs.” Yet, the mayor noted, “They’ve got 800,000 customers served by their water system and we were the only town affected. I can’t figure that.” Asked if the many weeks the PVSC spent cleaning the system’s water pipes along Park Ave. could have had anything to do with the finding of coliform bacteria, Bianchi said, “Maybe it had something to do with the scraping off stuff off the pipes but Lyndhurst had no trouble and their water passes through our town in three places.” Bianchi added that, “Occasionally, I get a smell from the water at my house on Rutherford Place but it went away.” Still, given the response by PVSC to the borough’s situation, the mayor said he was “very confident the water is safe to drink.”

Bergen Community College has earned a pair of District 1 Medallion Awards from the National Council on Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) lauding the school’s communication outreach. Through the annual Medallion Awards, the NCMPR, an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges, recognizes excellence in community, technical and junior college marketing and public relations in the northeastern U.S., Canada and the U.K. Bergen earned a silver Medallion for its official print newsletter, “Inside Bergen,” and a bronze Medallion for its monthly 30-minute news magazine television program, “Studio Bergen.” “Improved internal and external communication became a focus area for the college during our 2013 strategic planning,” Bergen President B. Kaye Walter said. “Out of that goal setting, the college developed a comprehensive communication plan that launched new strategies for community
engagement and the promotion of college news and student, faculty and staff achievements. The NCMPR Medallion Awards validate this increased emphasis and recognize the outreach as superlative.” Produced tri-annually by the college’s Office of Public Relations, “Inside Bergen” debuted in 2013. It college news and includes features such as a faculty profile, a campus calendar and a photo collage. Now in its fifth season, “Studio Bergen” highlights college news and airs on Torch TV, Ch. 26 of the Verizon FIOS cable TV system, and via the college’s official YouTube page. “Studio Bergen” is a joint production of the Office of Public Relations and the Office of Media Technologies. The managing director of BCC public relations, Larry Hlavenka Jr. of Hillsdale, accepted the awards at the NCMPR District 1 conference held in Hershey, Pa., Oct. 5-7.
