Schools need 60M in repairs BELLEVILLE – The bill to fix Belleville’s public schools has come due … and it’s a whopper. In a Facility Needs Assessment Study submitted to the Belleville Board of Education in October, DiCara Rubino Architects of Wayne figured it would cost nearly $60 million to deal with critical capital plant needs district-wide. And district Schools Superintendent Richard Tomko calculates that, ultimately, it could reach $80 million “to do major fixes.” Right now, Tomko said, the district is forming a “stakeholder committee” that will “prioritize our needs for us to go out for a referendum,” possibly as early as March 2016, for at least a partial remedy, and maybe a second before the end of 2016. The district suffered a shock to its long-neglected school infrastructure this summer when boiler systems at two schools – the Middle School, 279 Washington Ave., and School 8, 183 Union Ave. – failed inspection and had to be replaced by temporary boilers, furnished by C.J. Vanderbeck & Son of Paterson, for $325,950.

Will Silver Lake firehouse reopen? Stay tuned ... By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent BELLEVILLE – nother disastrous fire in Belleville’s Silver Lake section has sparked cries for restoration of the Franklin St. firehouse which has been shuttered for about two and a half years. Earlier this year, the Township Council had authorized bonding for about $250,000 in repairs to the tiny fire station but, so far, has not proceeded to put the project out to bid. Meanwhile, the community is still reeling from the aftermath of a 4-alarm blaze which, fire officials said, erupted shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, on the second floor of a two-story residential building at 63 Heckel St. That fire came only a few days after a 3-alarmer destroyed a nearby Belmont Ave. residence. Causes of both fires remain under investigation. Battalion Chief Rich Cavanagh, commander at the Heckel fire, told The Observer that, “upon arrival of our first units responding, there were flames in the back corner of the building and smoke pushing from the whole roof line.” So intense was the blaze, he said, that “about 30 minutes into the fire, the roof caved in.” That, in turn, led to “exposure to 61 Heckel” and a lot of water damage to the interior of that three-family residential structure where one tenant said she was glued to the TV, watching a middleweight boxing match replay, when people outside started shouting that the house was on fire. “Smoke started filling the

place and, soon after, the cops chased us out,” she said. Two Rottweillers and four cats were rescued but “everything else in the house is gone,” she said. Altogether, between the two buildings, seven adults were displaced, according to Cavanagh. The Red Cross

from Kearny, Nutley, Millburn and Maplewood stood by at local fire stations. It took several hours to finally knock down the fire, Cavanagh said. Fire inspectors later posted a notice on the buildings declaring they were uninhabitable. At last Tuesday’s municipal meeting, resident Patricia Yuksel, a neighbor of the fire scene, told the governing body that she was working in the yard and that, after someone from the street yelled there was a fire in the house, she called 911 on her cellular phone only to be told by the party on the other end that she had reached Newark 911. “She told me to hang up and to call my town,” Yuksel said. Efforts to reach a media spokesman for the Newark public safety director’s office about the 911 incident were unsuccessful last week. (That section of Heckel is only a block or so removed from Newark’s North Ward and Newark furnishes water to a number of property owners in Silver Lake and that applies to hydrants as well. Some residents griped that because one hydrant near the fire scene was faulty, firefighters had to drag hose to a hydrant at Bloomfield Ave. and hook up there.) Meanwhile, Township Fire Chief Robert Caruso told the council that he needed “$2.5 million to $4 million” to create more space for fire vehicles and EMS equipment at the Washington and Franklin Aves. fire stations and for “upgrades” at HQ. emember the man from last week’s blotter who was reportedly found sitting in one of the cinemas at the now-closed Lincoln Theater? He’s back. At 3 a.m., Dec. 5, the KPD received a report that a Buick had hit several parked vehicles on E. Midland Ave. and that the driver was walking away from the scene. Officer Ben Wuelfing and Det. Mike Andrews responded and located William Lupkovich, 24, of Jersey City, who was described as being “somewhat incoherent.” After field sobriety tests, he was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Following an Alcotest at headquarters, he was charged with DWI, careless driving, being an unlicensed driver and operating an unregistered vehicle. There’s more. Police said their inquiry into the Buick’s ownership revealed it appar-
ently had been stolen from an Elm St. auto repair center shortly before the accident. Lupkovich was additionally charged with receiving stolen property. He was remanded to the Hudson County Jail on $25,000 bail. ••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:

In many buyers’ minds, bigger is better, which is why they pay special attention to “square footage.” Sellers may want to appeal to buyers’ interest in this regard by adopting the measurement technique used by tax authorities. This typically involves measuring the home’s exterior dimensions and multiplying length times width. However, sellers and buyers alike should understand that this method does not take into account interior space lost to wall thicknesses, as well as largely unusable space lost to stairwells, utility rooms, closets, etc. Every-
one’s interests are better served by taking a closer look at floor plans and how one livable interior space relates to another. This is best seen in a floor-plan drawing or video tour. A simple photo of a home does not show how the rooms flow together. Floor plans and videos of a well-staged property are powerful marketing tools. To the NRA: Keep doing what you’re doing By Karen Zautyk
H
ave you ever heard of something called a “community gun”? We learned about this not too long ago after one such weapon was found in the base of a light pole reportedly not too far from where we live. (Don’t worry; it wasn’t in any of the Observer towns.) A community gun is a weapon -- usually a handgun -- that drug dealers and carjackers and others of that ilk share amongst themselves. Someone acquires it, likely illegally, files off the serial number (if that hasn’t been done already) and then stashes it someplace where it will be readily available for use, but not readily found by the cops. Now and then, it is moved to another secure hiding place, the better to keep it in the criminals’ hands. Those in the know -- the neighborhood drug dealers, carjackers, et al – are privy to the gun’s location: a drainpipe, a rooftop, a light pole, etc. If they’ve got a crime on their calendar, they can fetch the thing, use it for whatever nefarious purpose and re-stash it for the next gangster who needs
a weapon. We doubt anyone in any community-gun network is a member of the National Rifle Association. Neither do we believe that NRA members were preferred customers at a certain momand-pop deli in Newark that offered a rent-a-gun service. If you needed a weapon, you could go to the shop, leave a deposit, leave with a gun and then return it when you had committed whatever crime you had intended to commit. The proprietors even offered a bonus to regulars: free latex gloves. (These didn’t have to be returned.) We learned about that place from a law enforcement source, who noted that it eventually got busted by the feds. But neither he nor we believe this sort of thing isn’t still going on somewhere. We’re sharing these stories in the context of the increased rhetoric demonizing legal American gun owners, and especially the NRA, in the aftermath of the rash of horrific mass shootings in this country. In this space last week, our colleague Ron Leir added to the chorus, suggesting that the NRA “dispatch units overseas to

But he also got a lot of “Bravos!” Finally, here was a public official publicly expressing what a lot of people were thinking. And please do note his emphasis on abiding by the law. Van Blarcum reportedly estimated there are more than 10,000 licensed handgun owners in Ulster County. We think the bad boys may have taken Ulster County off their potential “soft target” site list. Last week, we heard one enlightened TV commentator (we’d give him credit if we recalled who it was) say -- we’re paraphrasing-“America is under attack, and our leaders want to disarm Americans. Think about that.” Please do think about it. And about the old NRA slogan: “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Anyone have a spare bumper sticker?

‘REOPEN THE FIREHOUSE’
It goes without saying that Belleville’s firefighters, as well as those from towns near and far who answered the call of mutual aid, worked tirelessly and valiantly to knock down, control and finally extinguish these obviously stubborn fires. These men and women deserve our thanks and admiration.
In the past year, Silver Lake residents have been told a variety of things about the Silver Lake firehouse, why it had been closed and what [the mayor and council] intended to do about it. We were initially told the roof was damaged and that there was asbestos in the building, thus rendering it uninhabitable.
When we were later told that inspectors determined the building did not have asbestos and monies – more than $200,000 – had been bonded for improvements, it appeared the reopening of the firehouse would become a reality, even if it would take some time for repairs and renovations.
It is in the best interest of Silver Lake, and Belleville as a whole, for [the mayor and council] to honor the commitment you made and use the bonded monies to repair, renovate and reopen the Silver Lake firehouse. Frank Fleischman III, Belleville

Feds: N.A. man defrauded investors NORTH ARLINGTON – 23-year-old North Arlington man was to appear last week in Newark Federal Court to face charges that he fraudulently obtained hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors prior to high-profile initial public offerings (IPOs) and then used the funds for lavish personal expenses, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman reported. The defendant, Omar Hafez, is accused of one count of wire fraud conspiracy, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the crime. According to the complaint unsealed Dec. 8, Hafez and others solicited funds from investors from July 2014 to December 2015, purportedly to purchase shares of various companies prior to their IPOs. Citing one example of the alleged fraud, Fishman’s office said Hafez told a potential investor that he had access to pre-IPO shares of high-profile companies, including a cloud communications business, the shares of which would increase

significantly following its IPO. That investor reportedly sent Hafez a $100,000 check to purchase shares. That same investor later sent Hafez a wire in the amount of approximately $300,000 for shares in another business -- an internet domain registrar and web hosting company, authorities said. None of the approximately $400,000 provided by the victim was used to buy shares in any pre-IPO company, authorities said. Instead, Hafez and other alleged conspirators used the money for personal expenses, including an $87,000 purchase at a luxury car dealership, as well as about $100,000 in cash withdrawals, authorities said. According to Hoffman, the alleged conspirators had operated the scheme through a number of entities they had created, including but not limited to: Lotus Global Wealth Management, Lotus Wealth Management, Lotus Global Capital Investments Corp., Lotus Global Capital Partners LLC, Lotus Global LLC, Lotus Global

If you were stuck in traffic on the Belleville Pike, or Kearny Ave., or Ridge Road, or surrounding streets, during Friday morning’s rush hour, this was the reason. At 8:25 a.m., a car and an NJ Transit bus collided on Kearny Ave. near the former Lincoln Theater. Officials said there were minor injuries to two bus passengers, but apparently the crash ‘looked a lot worse than it was.’ Not so for the traffic jams; they were as bad as they looked.

NUTLEY –
A
Nutley woman has been charged criminally by the state for allegedly filing fraudulent applications for relief funds to repair a Jersey Shore property in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, N.J. Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced last week. The defendant, Sandra L. Elliott, 44, reportedly obtained a total of $93,055 -- a $10,000 Homeowner Resettlement Program grant and $83,055 under the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation and Mitigation Program. According to the charges, Elliott falsely claimed that a storm-damaged property she co-owns with her parents in Brick was her primary residence at the time Sandy hit. In reality, authorities said, her primary residence was in Nutley and the Brick property was a vacation home. In addition, Hoffman’s office said, Elliott allegedly submitted fraudulent rent receipts that falsely indicated she had leased her Nutley home to a renter prior to the storm. Elliott also applied for a low-interest U.S. Small Busi-

The theft charge carries a sentence of five to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $150,000; the falsification charge, up to 18 months in prison and a fine of $10,000. Since March 2014, the AG’s Office has filed criminal charges against 45 people for allegedly engaging in relieffunds fraud related to the

likely to attract walk-in traffic. Although the ground-floor commercial space, a former dry cleaners, had been empty for some time, Machada said the property owner had cleaned and refurbished the interior and helped make it a perfect fit for the new occupants. It has been outfitted with comfy couches where visi-

center and Melissa Arevalo, a Kearny resident, and Esther Silva, who grew up in Kearny, serve as “family partners,” interacting with parents and kids who visit. Center hours are: Monday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, by appointment only. Machado, who is also a parent organizer at the nonprofit’s Bayway Family Success Center in Elizabeth, said that part of the center’s mission is “affirming strengths of the family and elevating their sense of self-worth so they don’t give up.” Families can interact, she said, through fun activities like arts and crafts projects or doing Zumba fitness routines or through working on “tangible life skills,” whether that’s investigating home ownership or nutritional guidance for pregnant moms, etc. Another goal, Machado said, is to encourage family members “to give back to fellow residents. We want to develop parent leaders who will stay strong being connected to one another.” Gesturing to a nearby book cabinet, Machado said that staff plan to fill those shelves with materials containing information on resources currently available in the Kearny community such as child care centers, job opportunities, basic English-language courses, etc., to which parents can be referred. A native of Newark’s Ironbound, where she graduated from Science High School, Machado moved with her family to Harrison for several years before shifting to Kearny as an adult, so she knows the area well. (Currently, she’s studying for a master’s in social work at Rutgers University in New Brun-
swick and leading a woman’s Bible study class at the Christian Community Presbyterian Church in Newark.) If there are no locally available resources, then, Machado said, the center would ask parents if any would be willing to lead a group to help other families who may be seeking guidance in a particular area. To get a better idea of what families in the community do want to know more about, the center is in the process of forming a volunteer advisory council of six to 12 members who will work with staff to survey local families and develop a “needs assessment” and then develop programs designed to meet those needs. Machado said she hopes to see a full-fledged program of activities evolving by spring 2016. In the meantime, the center has scheduled a series of events as a way of interacting with the public to get the word out and give local families a better idea of what lies ahead. Here’s what is planned so far: Tuesday, Dec. 15, the movie “Polar Express” will be screened from 4 to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 16, arts and crafts with holiday stick puppets, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 18, meet the staff, 3 to 5 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 21, arts and crafts: make a sock snowman, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 23, a screening of “Elf,” 2 to 4 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 28, brunch with staff, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Tuesday, Dec. 29, Parent Advisory Group meets, 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call the center at 201-622-2210, send a fax to 201-622-2224 or email info.libertyfsc@preventionlinks.org.

Selective shoplifters at work: NPD M
aybe it was really Viagra that he needed? The Nutley Police Department announced that a Harrison St. business was the victim of a shoplifting where an elderly black man, who walked with a limp and used a cane, allegedly stole 23 boxes of Trojan condoms. The store’s manager told police the man was wearing a black hat, black overcoat and light-colored pants when he allegedly grabbed the condoms and limped away from the store. The stolen condoms were valued at $395, the manager told police. The NPD Detective Bureau continues to investigate. No word yet on whether the store manager wants the condoms back if they’re recovered. Meanwhile, the NPD released the following reports of incidents that took place between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11: Dec. 5 • Yet another Nutley resident fell victim to fraud. This time, the resident got an automated phone call directing him to phone a number to reach the IRS. When the resident made the call, he was told he owed $8,000 and one and a half hours to pay the balance or face immediate arrest, according to police. The victim gave the person on the other end of the phone his name, address and phone number, but wisely did not give out any financial information. • A warrant for the arrest of Angela Alison, 25, of Morristown, has been issued after police said they linked her to a Harrison St. shoplifting, the NPD said. The manager of the store called police and told them the customer, alleged to be Alison, was reportedly seen removing three boxes of “an adult-female product” valued at $135. Police said a store clerk ordered the suspect to stop, but she instead left and hopped into a 4-door, red vehicle that quickly drove off. Alison remains at-large, police said.
Dec. 6 • A motor-vehicle stop on River Road led to the arrest of 39-year-old Dominick Arduino, of Nutley, on an outstanding Lyndhurst warrant. Police said they pulled Arduino over for driving with a suspended license. He later posted bail on the warrant, was issued a ticket for driving while suspended and was released, pending a mandatory court appearance. • Another motor-vehicle stop, this one on William St., led to the arrest of Ryan Cruz, 21, of Belleville, who was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, the NPD said. Cruz also got a ticket for careless driving — and was released on his own recognizance, pending court.
Dec. 9 Call this one mistaken tree-stand identity. Robert Valente, 49, formerly of Nutley and now of Farmingville, N.Y., was arrested and charged with theft, after he allegedly “stole” a tree stand in front of a Bloomfield Ave. business that he thought was out with the trash. Police said Valente stopped and put the item in his pickup truck, but when he was questioned by police, who said he was completely

wheel of his own car. Mirie was released on his own recognizance, pending court. • Anthony Marano, 30, of Nutley, was arrested on Franklin Ave. on two outstanding warrants — one from Paterson and the other from Passaic. Police said they learned of Marano’s warrants while conducting a field interview. The Passaic one was a no-bail warrant, so Marano was transferred into the custody of the Passaic PD, the NPD said.
cooperative, he told them he thought the stand was out with the trash, since there were numerous other items that appeared to be trash. Dec. 10 • Gitu Mirie, 34, of Bloomfield, was arrested and issued tickets charging him with drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident after police said he was responsible for smashing his vehicle into several parked cars on Ravine Ave. The driver, police said, was found sleeping behind the

song. In addition to profiles of the “Legends,” Krasner offers succinct histories of various aspects of the town, with lots of fascinating details. As she writes in the introduction: History “cannot be kept in a capsule. Much of what we see around the town is the result of the people who came before us” and also “our neighbors, the core of our everyday lives.”
It was in the introduction that we found one of our favorite tidbits, about a certain neighborhood in Kearny circa 1876. In a real estate brochure, which Krasner unearthed at the Kearny Museum, came the description that there could be found “cheap and rural homes” with the former farmland “laid out in lots with broad avenues, handsomely graded streets and plank walks. DiCara Rubino’s report noted that the Middle School’s boilers were 80 years old and were found to be “leaking, resulting in an unsafe operating condition.” School 3’s boilers, 41 years old, had also outlived their useful life, the architects concluded. They estimated it would cost around $2 million to replace the units at both schools. “Our second biggest problem in the district,” Tomko told The Observer, “is School 4 [at 30 Magnolia Ave.] in Silver Lake.” Built in 1924 and housing kindergarten to third grade, the school’s third floor “is not usable,” he said. “Floors are warping, there are roofing issues and the façade is cracking due to water leaks.”
A building-wide fix-up, including masonry wall repairs, roof work, new boilers, new windows, new bathrooms, new ventilation systems for classrooms, gym and library, updated electrical and fire alarm systems, plus an elevator, would run $7.5 million, according to the architects. “We have a major crowding issue at the Middle School (built in 1914, rehabilitated in 1936, with an addition built in 1964),” Tomko said, so he’s considering advancing plans for an expansion into the school parking lot. No cost estimate yet. Compliance with federal ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is another big issue faced by the district in most of its schools, he said. “And we have five buses in our school fleet which are coming to the end of their

life expectancy this year and have to be replaced,” said Tomko. The district is looking at a probable cost of around $500,000 to lease new vehicles, he said.
The 100-plus-page DiCara Rubino report details deficiencies found during a walk-through of all the public schools during summer 2014. Here is a link to that report:
http://bit.ly/bellevilleschoolreport. Many of the school buildings face similar issues: classroom windows that glaze over and can only be partly closed, rusting steel lintels, ineffective ventilation systems, compromised masonry walls, cracked walkways and parking areas, obsolete boilers and HVAC systems and out-ofdate fire alarm and in-school communication systems. Tomko said he’s willing to field questions from the public about the capital crunch, along with any other issues, at his next Superintendent Forum, slated for Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. He said the first half-hour will be devoted to a discussion of the district’s new Envision Math program for kindergarten to grade 5 introduced in September.

Blue Tide girls: Moving on with limited roster As Al Ruiz begins his sixth year as the head coach of the Harrison High School girls’ basketball team, he finds himself in a bit of a quandary. Ruiz simply doesn’t have the deep bench he once had. Participation numbers in the program are way down. “It’s going to be different,” said Ruiz, who guided the Blue Tide to a 14-11 record last year. “The last couple of years, we had a good number of girls who came out. But not this year. I’m going to have to be smart as a coach, pick when I can sit my best players. I have to work with zone defenses not to tire out the rest of the team.” In fact, Ruiz has only six girls that he can really count on as the season begins this Friday night against a blossoming powerhouse in Queen of Peace. “We lost a good portion of the girls to graduation,” Ruiz said. “We had a couple of girls with us during the summer, but it was hard to get the whole team together. We
tried to drill the ones we had to understand the system. We’re trying to change things up a little.” One of the key returnees is junior do-everything Cynthia Ferreira, a 5-foot-8 forward who averaged 12 points per game last year, but will need to increase that production this season. “We’re doing things to be able to get her the ball,” Ruiz said. “She can control the ball because she’s the main cog. She can definitely be a top scorer and she’s showing that a little bit in the preseason. She can definitely shoot the ball. We definitely expect more scoring from her this year.” Another key player is 5-foot-3 senior point guard Shaneida Falcon. “She makes a lot of good decisions with the ball,” Ruiz said. “She sees the court very well and gets the ball to the right places.” Tabatha Ferreira (no relation to Cynthia) is a 5-foot-5 senior guard. “She usually guards the best player on the see VIEW page

Queen of Peace has a new girls’ basketball coach in Jiovanny Fontan (c.) as well as basically an entire new roster. From l. are Jamira Watkins, Sydney Watkins, Fontan, Asonah Alexander, D’Aviyon Magazine and Raven Farley-Clark.
By Jim Hague Observer Sports Writer
P
erhaps one of the biggest and best moves Queen of Peace High School made last spring was hiring former St. Anthony High School and University of Southern California point guard Jiovanny Fontan as the school’s new girls’ basketball coach. Because after the 26-year-old Fontan arrived, an influx of tremendously talented players followed suit. Transfers from other schools came flocking. Incoming freshmen with impeccable talents and resumes came calling. Suddenly, a program that was completely downtrodden
for the last few years became a statewide power overnight. Welcome to the world of New Jersey Parochial school basketball, where transfers are now commonplace and floundering programs become powerful in the blink of an eye. Fontan makes no bones about wanting to become a head coach of a girls’ program. Just two years removed from a brief professional career after a well-documented and well-respected high school and collegiate career (Fordham, then USC), Fontan wanted to go to a school where he would eventually be able to coach his extremely talented 13-year-old sister Jianni, currently in the seventh grade.
The opportunity opened up at Queen of Peace and Fontan pounced on it, knowing that it was a challenge to start from ground zero, with a Golden Griffins program that won all of one game last season. “I’m not worrying about what happened last year and whether that would hinder us,” Fontan said. “Some people told me that it’s impossible, coaching 15-and-16-year-old girls. I’m just here to have them make sure they understand what life’s all about. I’m trying to be upbeat and positive here. I never expected to be able to pick up a coaching position as fast as I did. But I’m here. I’m willing to work. I definitely see QP next page

wanted to be a girls’ coach, so this is exactly what I wanted.” Fontan said that it’s been a smooth transition for him. “It’s been great,” Fontan said. “It’s the perfect situation for me. It’s the best of all worlds. I have some good basketball players who know what we need to do to win. I definitely have some that know their parts and know their responsibilities. In fact, it’s been a blessing to have a lot of girls that were looking for a new situation. I think that’s all a plus.” One of the top transfers is 6-foot-4 junior forward Raven Farley-Clark, who comes to QP from Paterson Eastside after a stint at the Patrick School. Farley-Clark has to sit out the first 30 days of the season due to the NJSIAA’s transfer rules, but when she becomes eligible to play, she will be a dominant force. “She already has some
big-time legitimate offers from colleges,” Fontan said of Farley-Clark, who could already choose from one of the 15 major college offers she has received. “I think she’s going to have a breakout year and can average 10 points and 10 rebounds per game, just to be safe.” In other words, it could be more. Freshman Asonah Alexander is a 5-foot-9 point guard who Fontan believes could be the best of the bunch already. A product of Newark, Alexander brought her grade school to the Newark schools championship. “In the championship game, she scored 51 of her team’s 53 points,” Fontan said. “She’s got a chance to be the best player we’ve ever seen here. She can handle, distribute and makes everyone around her better. Other girls wanted to play with her. She’s that good.” Junior D’Aviyon Magazine is a 5-foot-8 junior, a transfer from Paterson Eastside. Maga-
zine also has to sit the first 30 days of the season due to the transfer regulations. “She’s a legitimate 3-point shooter,” Fontan said. “She’s also our best vocal leader.” Sophomore Sydney Watkins is a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard who is a transfer from DePaul in Wayne. “She’s our most physically developed player,” Fontan said. “She’s very strong and can play anywhere.” Jamira Watkins (no relation) is a 6-foot junior forward who is an excellent rebounder and eventually will be a great compliment on the front line to Farley-Clark. “She’s also a great rebounder and a physical stopper,” Fontan said. “She’s a very good defender.” Forever Toppin is a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, a transfer from Immaculate Conception of Lodi. She can play right away. “She’s very skilled,” Fontan said. “She can shoot it, pass it and score it. She is a very

With all the transfers – which one is eligible and which one is not – there could be some confusion in the early going. “It’s extremely tough,” Fontan said. “But it will give me a chance to look at others who might not have received a chance. It gives us all a good feel of who we are as we try to establish an identity.” The Golden Griffins open up Friday night against Harrison. “We’re very excited to get this going,” Fontan said. “We’ve been working hard for a long time. We’re ready to go after it and beat up on someone else after beating up on ourselves in practices for a while.” Make no bones about it. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease of the macula, the area of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Symptoms include blurry or fuzzy vision, darkness in the central portion of the visual field, and wavy lines that should appear straight. There are two types of the disease. About 90 percent of all cases are “dry” AMD, in which the light-sensitive cells in the macula slowly break down to cause gradual loss of central vision. “Wet” AMD occurs when fragile new blood vessels behind the retina leak blood and fluid under the macula, causing rapid deterioration of central vision. Wet AMD is treated with lasers or injected medication, while dry AMD can be treated with specific vitamins and miner-
als. Today’s column has been brought to you as a public service. We provide comprehensive medical and surgical eye care, including routine exams, diagnosis, and the treatment of eye diseases. Lyndhurst boys’ hoops squad welcomes familiar face in McGuire By Jim Hague Observer Sports Writer
T
om McGuire left the head boys’ basketball coaching position at his alma mater Queen of Peace last spring after four years, knowing full well that his coaching career was far from over. “I was just looking for a new opportunity,” McGuire
said. McGuire admitted it was going to be difficult to leave Queen of Peace, considering he spent most of his life affiliated with the school. In fact, he still teaches criminal justice and history at the school. “Everyone at Queen of Peace has been good to me,” McGuire said. “But with what I’m trying to do profes-
sionally, it just made sense that I went elsewhere.” So where did McGuire head? Try just a little further north toward Rt. 3. Try one of QP’s main rivals, namely Lyndhurst. Lyndhurst was in need of a new boys’ hoops coach, after Paul Palek resigned to take care of family matters. “I’m familiar at Lyndhurst,” McGuire said.

hurst.” McGuire is not inheriting a world beater. The Golden Bears won all of four games last year in what became a very trying season. But McGuire recognized something right away in the initial workouts. “The kids are hungry,” McGuire said. “They’re working their tails off from Day One. They want to win. They’re definitely eager to win. They’re eager and hungry.” That generally happens when you suffer through a 4-19 campaign. “It’s hard coming off four wins,” McGuire said. “They have to get rid of the mentality they had winning four games. I don’t know what to expect from them. They need to find some consistency. Once they get used to me and what I expect of them, I think they’re going to jell and be successful.” McGuire said that he’s seeing signs already. “There’s a lot of talent there,” McGuire said. “I can see the differences every day. From the first practice to the first scrimmage to the second, they are raring to go. If we are able to put kids in the right places and get them the right minds, they’re going to be successful.” Leading the way is 6-foot-3 senior forward Justin Smith. Smith averaged around six points per game last year, but McGuire is confident that Smith can become a bigtime scorer and rebounder for the Golden Bears this season. “He’s been great so far,” McGuire said. “He’s taken the role of being the team leader and run with it. He’s been in charge of workouts and the others listen. He has decent post moves, but we’ve been doing a lot of work with him on his work near the basket. I think he can become a 12-to-14 pointper-game scorer. He just has to stay out of foul trouble. He also needs to get a lot of rebounds. I think he’s going to have a big year.” Senior Vinnie Dorio is another key contributor. The 5-foot-10 Dorio is an ener-
getic floor leader. “He can play either guard position, but we’re going to start him off at point guard,” McGuire said. “He’s very strong with the ball and is confident with the ball. He makes good decisions and can see the floor well. He’s a leader on the court. I like the way he plays.” Senior Nic DiTommaso is a 5-foot-8 guard who is the team’s resident long-range scorer. “He’s a very good shooter,” McGuire said. “We’re looking for him to hit some threes (3-point shots) for us. He can open things up for guys like Justin inside if he’s hitting his shots. He’s also getting better with his shot selection, which has been a help. But Nic can shoot the ball very well.” Peter Lazaris is a 6-foot junior who can play either the shooting forward or strong forward positions. “He’s like our jack-of-alltrades,” McGuire said. “He’s the hustle guy, the one who makes the plays that don’t get in the scorebook. He gets to loose balls and is all over the court. He also can score, which is a big help. We need him to rebound as well. He does a little bit of everything, things we need. He makes smart plays.” Eddie Albuquerque is a 5-foot-10 junior guard who can also put the ball in the basket for the Golden Bears. “He’s the best at going to the rim,” McGuire said. “He’s improved his shot a great deal and he’s working on his shot selection to become a better player.” Kyle Logan is a 6-foot-2 sophomore who has shown a lot of promise in the preseason scrimmages. “He’s going to be a backup to Justin (Smith) and Pete (Lazaris) upfront, but he’s going to be on the court a good amount of the time,” McGuire said. “He has a good mid-range game with his shot and he’s a very strong rebounder. He has a chance to become a very good player.” Matthew Torres is a 5-foot10 senior who is a transfer from Becton Regional.

“He’s strong with the ball and is at his best when he’s going to the rim,” McGuire said. “He’s a smart player with great ability handling the ball. He’s going to see time at point guard.” Sophomore Adrian Lopez is a 6-foot guard who also has point guard experience, giving the Golden Bears

The future of fire protection in Silver Lake? “We’re looking at all options,”
he said. Given that Franklin St. “is one of the busiest streets in the district, that compromises our vehicle going in and out of the building [and] puts our firefighters – and residents – at risk,” Caruso said. For that reason, he said, “we are looking for better alternatives.” One such alternative that township officials have mentioned is construction of a two-bay firehouse on one acre of the former Roche property,

near the Franklin Ave./Mill St. location, which the property redeveloper, Tulfra Realty, has offered to finance. First Ward Councilwoman Marie Strumolo Burke said she wants something done now, whether that means fixing up the existing firehouse or providing a new one “in Silver Lake,” because “we need this as soon as possible.” Councilman-at-large Kevin Kennedy scoffed at the notion of putting the Silver Lake firehouse back on line. “It’s a rat hole. You’re not going to find a [fire] truck that fits in there.” Caruso said there is one rig that can adjust to the space but added that the building’s “roof needs repair and everything below.” Asked by Mayor Ray Kimble whether the BFD has sufficient personnel to staff the facility “if we agreed to [fix it] tomorrow,” Caruso hedged, saying: “That’s another discussion.” Cavanagh, speaking as president of FMBA Local 229, urged the governing body to consider raising the mandated minimum per shift to “12 or 13” from the current 11. “When we’re down to 11,” he said, “we lose the engine that starts the process of water suppression and the ladder becomes the engine and that throws us off.” And FMBA state delegate Firefighter Dave Lelinho added: “A fire doubles in size every 60 seconds so getting the Silver Lake house open should be paramount.” After saying that it was “the council’s decision” whether or not to restore the Silver Lake firehouse, Kimble pledged to “put up a bond ordinance for $4 million” at a future meeting but whether there was consensus around restoring the Silver Lake firehouse was left unclear.

Harrison. A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison, followed by internment in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. For information, directions or to send condolences to the family, please visit www. mulliganfh.com. Born in Turosl, Poland, Janina lived in Harrison, before moving to Garwood in 1966. She was a homemaker who loved spending her free time with her family and grandchildren. Janina was the beloved wife of Walenty for 52 years, devoted mother of Zbignew Kowalczuk and Jolanta
Humphreys, dear sister of Helena Czyzewska and cherished grandmother of four. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her two brothers and a sister. Wilbert Murray Wilbert (Bob) Murray, of Kearny, died on Thursday, Dec. 10, at home. He was 87. The funeral Mass was offered on Monday, Dec. 14, in St. Cecilia’s Church, Kearny. A private cremation followed. Visiting was held at the Condon Funeral Home 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny, (condonfuneralhome.com) on Sunday, Dec. 13.
nowicz as an extremely diligent and hard-working student. “She was involved in numerous activities and groups in KHS including the Kearny High School marching unit and was always involved in the KHS musicals,” Ficeto recalled. “She was a lovely young woman who was very talented — always hard-working, dedicated, self-motivated and an amazing drive to succeed.” And soon, with luck, that success will also include becoming America’s new “Top Chef.” “It’s been an absolutely incredible experience,” Akunowicz said. “Stressful, but incredible.” Watch “Top Chef” on Bravo at 10 p.m. ET Thursday nights. Miss an episode? Catch up online at www.BravoTV.com/ top-chef. Bob had been a machinist for Otis Elevator in Harrison for 32 years until retiring. He had served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene (nee Fadeski) and is survived by his children Robert Murray (Josephine), Loretta O’Neill and Irene Brooks (Kenneth). Also surviving are his grandchildren Daniel, Stacy, Robert II, Sean, Marguerita, Alexandra and Samantha. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Deborah Heart and Lung Center at deborah.org. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
