Early morning fire rips through Lyndhurst home causing serious damage By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A early morning fire on Tuesday, May 7, caused extensive damage to a Summit Avenue home in Lyndhurst, Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the public information officer of

the Lyndhurst Police Department, said in a statement. At approximately 1:45 a.m., the fire broke out on the second floor a two-family home, according to Auteri. According to Auteri: The home had been occupied by three adults who all

resided on the first floor. Each of them was able to escape without being harmed. One of the tenants was awoken by the sound of broken glass before learning flames were shooting out a second-floor window on the north side of the dwelling. The second floor was vacant

and under renovation. A contractor had been working on the second floor Monday evening, sanding and staining hardwood floors. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but not considered suspicious. It is believed the contractor may have failed to properly discard the oil-

It was 132 years ago — May 14, 1887 — that the first edition of this newspaper, then known as The Arlington Observer, was printed. It was one large,

two-sided broadsheet. It cost 3¢ a copy — or $1.50 a year with home delivery included — and it came out every Saturday back then. To say the very least, The Observer has evolved quite a bit since the first printing.

There wasn’t much by way of advertising back then. And the ads that were there were all text. There wasn’t a single photograph, though there was a graphic of some kind for the newspaper’s “columnist.”

If you wanted a magazine, newspaper, periodical or any assortment of tobacco products — there was a lot of pipe smokin’ back then — it’s a return trip to Elm and Midland for R. E. Malloy News Dealer and Stationer. Saturday publication then became Thursday. Some might still remember when The Observer was a Thursday publication. Then it became a Wednesday publication — it still is, technically — though it does now circulate Tuesday mornings. All of this aside, one thing has remained consistent since that May day in 1887 when the first edition came off the presses — The Observer has printed every single week since that day and, as such, it is very likely the oldest business in Kearny at 132. Yes, you read that right — The Observer is a business. Over the years, there’s been a lot of confusion about how The Observer exists. In fact, many have claimed the belief that it’s owned by the Town of Kearny. That has never has been the case and never will be. It’s called The Observer, not The Kearny Observer, because the newspaper has never just covered Kearny. Our offices have always been in Kearny — most recently

(More on that later.) There wasn’t all that much of a flow, really, either. Things just sort of appeared on the pages — with a certain randomness to it all. There were stories about the Town Council, the population of Kearny being around 1,600. Mass and service times for local churches were listed as were meeting times for “societies.” There was a column written by The Village Lounger (Kearny was apparently known as a village back then.) The Arlington Observer’s office was somewhere near Midland Avenue and Elm Street. C.H. Crombie, also at Elm Street near Midland Avenue, was the place to go to get the best beef, lamb, mutton, veal and pork. They also sold veggies and delivered locally, presumably by horse and buggy or wagon. Elm Street and Midland Avenue was a haven for commerce, apparently. You could also buy shoes from Eric Lofquist, whose store was in that area, get furniture at G.R. Taylor, also in the same vicinity. To get flowers, though, you’d have to take the stage coach or some other form of transport all the way to Schuyler Avenue near Arlington Cemetery, to get flowers.

Continued from previous page at 39 Seeley Ave., and before that 531 Kearny Ave. As of 2019, The Observer covers eight towns — Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Belleville, Nutley and Bloomfield. There once was even a bureau in Rutherford … and we did, back then, cover Rutherford. Not now, though. The Observer has been owned by a member of the Tortoreti Family since Anthony Tortoreti purchased the newspaper back in 1972. When Tony sadly died in 2002, Mary Tortoreti became the owner and matriarch of the operation. Following Mary’s untimely death late in December 2016, her daughters Lisa and Tina took over as coowners. The Observer went from being a broadsheet to a tabloid circa 2000 when Mr. Tortoreti saw a need to save money on paper and printing costs — and a need for the newspaper to be easier for readers to handle. Most other weeklies have followed suit to the current tabloid format. Since its inception, the newspaper has made its money almost exclusively

through advertising. It’s been a long time since there was a charge for the newspaper, though we do charge for early access to the e-Edition online. Back in 1996, Mr. Tortoreti saw the need to get online when the Internet as we know it was in its infancy, so he purchased the domain www.theobserver.com. While many newspapers were short-sighted about moving online — they’re no longer publishing — Mr. Tortoreti ensured there would be an online presence for the newspaper immediately — and with a very easyto-remember domain name. There are countless newspapers in the world called “The Observer,” but only one — us — has access to the newspaper’s actual name in its URL with a dot com. Now, since that time, 23 years ago, The Observer’s Web presence has grown significantly, with the inclusion of social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Former residents and those who don’t have access to the print edition are now able to keep up on their old homesteads no matter where they are in the world. In 2018, Co-owner Lisa

Harrison taking active role in support of Kearny’s fight against Keegan Landfill

THE TOWN OF HARRISON IS taking an active role in support of Kearny’s fight to close the Keegan Landfill in several ways. Last week, the Harrison Mayor and Town Council unanimously voted to approve a resolution to encourage the state of New Jersey to close the landfill. The resolution says the NJ Department of Environmental Protection should “temporarily close” the landfill. The resolution notes Kearny has requested “temporary” closure of the landfill, though it has, instead, sought complete closure of the Keegan — not just a temporary closure. The measure had an 8-0 vote. Councilwoman Carol Mandaglio did not attend the meeting. Meanwhile, also in Harrison, former Harrison Councilman Anselmo Millan is coming to Kearny’s aid. Millan spearheaded an effort to get Harrison residents to sign a petition to urge Gov. Phil Murphy to close the Keegan Landfill. More than 2,000 Harrisonians signed the petitions — and Millan, last week, delivered them to Murphy’s offices in

Trenton. Anthony Rios, Monica Miguens and Nick Azevedo delivered the petitions with Millan. The petition said: “We the undersigned petition Gov. Phil Murphy to close the Keegan Landfill located in Kearny on behalf of the residents of Harrison, Kearny and neighboring towns. The air testing conducted by the Town of Kearny confirms that the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority (NJSEA) lied about the levels of toxins being released into the air by the Keegan Landfill and the NJSEA Board of Commissioners refused at their March and April meetings the requests of residents to close the landfill or place toxic fumes collection and cleaning system in place. Gov. Murphy, we need your help to eliminate the toxins in our neighborhood caused by the Keegan Landfill.” “It is very important that the governor know that the Keegan Landfill, although located in Kearny, is affecting neighboring towns including Harrison,” Millan said in a statement. “Student Anthony Rios’s participation in obtaining signatures on the petition shows that the next generation understands the

Dear Commissioner McCabe: We write to inquire about the actions the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is taking to address health hazards and noxious odors at the Keegan Landfill in Kearny, New Jersey. Given the proximity of this site to residential and recreational areas, all possible measures must be undertaken to protect the public against any possi-

To address our constituents’ numerous concerns, we request your staff brief our offices about the state’s plan for addressing issues at the Keegan Landfill in Kearny. We understand the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) was fined on March 1, 2019 because of a violation of the federal Air Pollution Control Act, which prohibits the emission of hydrogen sulfide in concentration levels greater than 30 parts per billion over a 30 minute-period. We have been informed that hydrogen sulfide levels above 30 parts per billion has persisted at Keegan Landfill. These levels are unacceptable, especially if there is a possibility that an infraction may affect the health and safety of citizens. Additionally, we understand DEP has entered an Administrative Order

on Consent with NJSEA to develop an action plan for addressing odor violations. This plan has included the installation of continuous air monitoring equipment. We are encouraged by news of cooperation between DEP and NJSEA and urge both parties to work quickly to address possible removal of materials causing the prevalence of hydrogen sulfide to ensure our constituents’ quality of life. Public health must be the top priority for the future of the Keegan Landfill. To that end we hope the DEP is coordinating closely with the New Jersey Department of Health to address all public health concerns. We look forward to our offices being briefed about the actions DEP is taking to remove health hazards and noxious odors at the Keegan Landfill in Kearny. there are trips like this one. Twenty-five Kearny High School juniors and seniors studying Latin and Italian spent a little more than a week in Italy last month thanks to the efforts of veteran Italian teacher Michele Cacciottolo. This was the sixth time Cacciottolo, who has been teaching Italian at KHS since 2009, took a group of students to Italy on an alternating-year basis. He was joined by colleagues Diogo Neto, KHS art teacher; Joanne O’Malley, an elementary school teacher at Roosevelt School; and Jenny Brodsky, an instructional coach from the Board of Education office, who served as chaperones. “We visited Taormina, Palermo and Mount Etna, Sorrento, Amalfi, Pompeii and Rome,” Cacciottolo said. “I encouraged the Italian students to try as much as they could to speak Italian while there. Just being in Italy, being surrounded by Italian things, names, chatter and shops was in itself a big value to them. Some tried their Italian and were very proud, not only to be able to understand some Italian, but also to be understood.”

We asked Cacciottolo what he saw as the best part of the trip. “This year, we got to Taormina, a small picturesque town on a hill by the sea,” he said. “At lunch time, the first day, we settled down in our hotel. As soon as I opened the door to the balcony of my room I was in awe. A warm sun, the Mediterranean Sea below me and the towering Mount Etna, with its 11,000 feet and snowy cap, in front of me. I could have stayed there the entire afternoon. “Another gorgeous part was our day on the Island of Capri. The previous day, heavy seas kept us from visiting part of the Amalfi Coast and so we had high hopes for Capri. The super-fast boat ride to Capri from Sorrento — just 25 minutes total — had 10 minutes of huge waves. All of us were outside screaming and enjoying the wind and the heavy sea. “We spent time shopping and having a nice lunch, then we took the chair lift all the way to the top of the Island. The view was gorgeous. Everyone was wild taking pictures. It was an awesome, breezy day filled with light and laughter.” Of course, it wasn’t just Cacciottolo who had a blast on the European voyage. We sampled some of the

KPD: 2 teens nabbed in carjacking

Police said both boys had already been under juvenile detention for unrelated offenses and remained confined after processing for the Kearny incident. At 11:18 a.m., Officers Nick Funk and Ryan Brady and Det. Mike Farinola responded to a residence on the 200 block of Belgrove Drive on a report of a burglary. The owner said she had arrived home to discover the glass panels on the front door shattered — and then found “extensive damage” inside. Total damages — broken doors, windows, toilets, appliances, walls — were estimated at $12,000. Police said area surveillance cameras showed four suspects unlawfully entering the home and Farinola was able to identify one as Alexander M. Dellaquila, 26, of Kearny. On May 2, Dellaquila, accompanied by his attorney, turned himself in, was charged on summonses with burglary and criminal mischief, and was later released. The incident remains under investigation.

At noon, a woman on the 300 block of Belgrove Drive reported to Officer Funk that she had heard a noise in her living room and upon investigating found two men standing there. She screamed, and they calmly walked out and fled in a car. Dets. John Fabula, Mike Gontarczuk and Steven Hroncich took over the investigation, found pry marks on the home’s front door and “were able to piece together numerous surveillance

videos which gave them a description of the men and their car and a partial car registration.” With assistance from the state’s Real Time Crime Center, they narrowed down the license plate and car description to a single Cadillac DeVille. A bulletin was sent to surrounding police departments, six of which reported similar burglaries believed to have been committed by the same suspects. A seventh, Edison PD, said they had recently arrested the registered owner of the Kearny get-away car — Dwayne A. Thorpe, 50, of Elmwood Park — and lodged him in the Middlesex County Jail. The KPD issued criminal complaints for Thorpe, charging him with burglary and conspiracy. On May 4, Officers Funk and John Donovan arrested him at the Middlesex Jail, processed him for the new Kearny warrants and transferred him to the Hudson County Jail. The identity of the second suspect remains under investigation.

He was transported to headquarters, charged with failure to surrender CDS to police, a disorderly person’s offense and possession of paraphernalia, also a disorderly person’s offense. AS WEEKS GO, THE LAST WAS relatively tame — but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any developments in the saga known as the Keegan Landfill. Last week kicked off with Gov. Phil Murphy visiting the Prudential Center for a press conference to announce the Video Music Awards are coming to Newark. But before Murphy could get into the Rock, he was confronted by the Co-owner of The Observer, Lisa Feorenzo, who asked the governor why he was ignoring Kearny and the Keegan Landfill. “I’m not ignoring Kearny, ma’am,” he said in reply, taking off for the inside of the Prudential Center. As a reminder, Feorenzo sent a personal invitation to the governor to attend the NJSEA meeting this Thursday, May 16. She sent the letter directly to the governor’s Deputy Press Secretary Matthew Saidel. She also called the governor’s office to remind Saidel

Ballantyne about the meeting. Interestingly enough, though, they asked Feorenzo not to use Saidel’s personal email anymore. Of course, Saidel gave it to her just weeks earlier. Meanwhile, it’s back to Lyndhurst this week as the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority hosts its May meeting at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 16, at 2 DeKorte Park Plaza. This will mark the thirdconsecutive month residents of West Hudson will be on hand to remind John Ballantyne, Vincent Prieto and company that nothing short of closing the Keegan Landfill will suffice.

Community College Opportunity Grant has open many closed doors By Christopher M. Reber Special to The Observer Hudson County Community College (HCCC) was fortunate to have been chosen as one of the first 13 pilot New Jersey colleges to offer the Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) to new and continuing students in spring 2019. The CCOG pilot at HCCC provides strong evidence that students greatly need this type of financial support, in addition to other forms of financial aid, in order to access higher education. Postsecondary educational credentials lead to family-sustaining wages that will eventually contribute to workforce and economic development, generating net revenue for the community by growing the base of taxpaying citizens and growing businesses and other community sectors through an increasingly skilled workforce. During the spring 2019 semester, nearly 700 HCCC stu-

dents received CCOG awards totaling more than $710,000. These included many new students who were attracted to HCCC because of the belief that tuition and fee-funding support provided by the CCOG would make their attendance possible. Additional CCOG recipients were former HCCC students who had discontinued their studies, in many cases due to financial challenges, and who were able to return this spring because of the CCOG. In addition, the CCOG funding increased the rate of return of continuing students between the fall and spring semesters, contributing to student retention and making it more likely that students would persist and complete their degree programs. The principal reason community college students do not complete their associate degree studies is related to financial pressures. With 83% of HCCC students receiving financial aid and/or scholarships, our students are

among those most in need of funding support to attend postsecondary education in the state of New Jersey. Yet thousands of current students have unmet financial need, which is a barrier to completing their degree programs, seeking good jobs and/or furthering their education through baccalaureate and graduate study at our sister colleges and universities in New Jersey. And there are clearly thousands more residents of Hudson County who want to pursue higher education and a pathway to family-sustaining wages, but do not even consider the opportunities or talk with us about how to achieve their dreams. These citizens often perceive an inability to afford the cost of college attendance as an ultimate roadblock and therefore do not come forward. For these reasons, our HCCC community fully supports continuing and expanding the Community College Opportunity Grant program. We

support expanding program eligibility for students coming from families with incomes up to the median level in New Jersey. This expansion alone would more than double the number of students participating in the program immediately, and that number would continue to grow, adding skilled workers and taxpayers who would benefit our Hudson County economy over time. Nursing and Culinary Arts are two of HCCC’s signature programs. These programs are gateways to strong careers in our county and region, but they are also among the most costly programs offered by community colleges and other postsecondary institutions. For this reason, these programs must charge program-specific fees in addition to tuition and regular fees. Unfortunately, the CCOG pilot did not cover these high-cost program fees. Had the pilot covered fees for Nursing and Culinary Arts programs, many additional students would

have benefited this spring. Every HCCC student has a story. Like those of so many HCCC students, Koral Booth’s story is inspirational. In fall 2017, after being away from the classroom for more than 20 years, Koral made the decision to pursue her passion for writing and enrolled at HCCC as an English major. As the mother of four sons (ages 6, 11, 12, and 18), her plan was to show up to class, get good grades and go home. However, that plan changed. Koral quickly found herself excelling, and received an invitation to join the National Society for Leadership and Success. That was the turning point in her involvement in the college. Since then, Koral has been active in multiple clubs on campus, participates in the federal work-study program and is a student leader. She wants to be an example for other “non-traditional” students, encouraging them

Continued from previous page to become involved in order to enhance their college experience. Unfortunately, Koral’s time at HCCC has also been marked with extreme loss. When Koral began her studies at HCCC, her parents were her biggest cheerleaders. At that time, both of her parents were battling cancer. During the spring 2018 semester, Koral’s mother lost her battle. On a morning in February, Koral’s mom urged her to leave her bedside and go to school, as always pushing her to persist on her educational journey. While in her contemporary moral issues class, Koral received a phone call that her mom died. Rather than withdrawing from the semester, Koral persisted, finishing that term with a 3.7 GPA. Less than one year later, in January 2019, Koral lost her father to congestive heart failure. Again she persisted, and continues to do so in her six classes this semester. When asked how she managed to stay focused, she said, “I’m a fighter. I get that from my parents.” The Community College Opportunity Grant has been instrumental in Koral’s ability to remain

enrolled and stay on course to pursue her dreams. Because financial aid covers only a small portion of her tuition and fees, she must take out student loans each semester to fill the gap. These loans are a great source of stress for her since she worries about the interest that is accruing and the pressure of paying them back. Because of CCOG, Koral did not have to take out loans this semester. She considers this a blessing and is thankful the grant is providing her the opportunity to attend college without the burden of loans.

This week, Koral was inducted into Sigma Kappa Delta, the National English Honor Society, and she was recognized at HCCC’s

annual Student Excellence and Achievement Awards Ceremony. These events are difficult for her without her parents being present. As a reminder, she always wears something of theirs to these events — her mom’s ring and her dad’s chain — and pictures them in the front row cheering her on because that is ex-

actly where they would be if they were here. Knowing how proud they are of her is what keeps her going. Moreover, Koral is passing this persistence on to her four children. Her oldest is a high school student who participates in HCCC’s Early College Program. He is earning credits toward an associate degree while in high school, and plans to complete his HCCC degree after high school graduation. Investments in community colleges have been demonstrated to generate financial returns to the economy that are far greater than the cost of those investments. These are investments in people, like Koral, and in the realization of their dreams. The Community College Opportunity Grant is one such potent investment that should be continued and expanded to every community college and every eligible student in New Jersey. The importance of scheduling regular eye exams is underscored by studies that have identified links between common eye conditions and Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The latest research on the subject reinforces the findings of previous studies and adds one new important finding. According to an analysis of the health records of 5,400 dementia-free adults over 25 years, people with agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) were 20% more likely to develop dementia than those without AMD; those with diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma were 44% more likely to develop dementia than those without either eye disease. However, the study showed no link between cataracts and dementia risk. With all this in mind, comprehensive eye exams

can yield potentially valuable information. People who already have dementia can have difficulties with vision and perception. Joseph J. Doherty, 97, died Monday, April 29, 2019. Born in Scotland, he lived in Harrison and Kearny before moving to North Arlington over 80 years ago. Joseph worked for Rowe International in Belleville and Whippany for 45 years before retiring in 1983. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Queen of Peace Council No. 3428, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4697 and the Ironbound Irish American Club. It seemed more like a Vegas show, as if I were watching her residency there.’ — Joann Barton CHER from 04 video, singing his parts and then Cher would sing her parts. “I Got You Babe” was a touching and heartfelt moment. The audience loved it and also got melancholy at that moment. Sonny also sang along on one of my favorites, “The Beat Goes On.” I thought after the ‘60s she would follow up with her ‘70s hits. I was disappointed when she didn’t sing “Dark Lady,” “Gypsies,” “Tramps and Thieve and Half Breed.” Instead, she began to sing a few Abba songs, most likely to promote the movie “Mama Mia” or to change it up a little bit — including “Waterloo,” “SOS” and “Fernando” (which she actually does sing in the movie) were just a few of the Abba hits she sang. Throughout the show, video montages would play, especially when she was doing one of her umpteen costume changes. But they were few and far between. I loved when she did her Elvis or Chelvis tribute. Cher and most musicians will tell you Elvis was the reason they are doing what they do still to this day. He was a major influence on a large number of musicians. And of course if you know me, I didn’t mind that one bit because I love Elvis. While she was changing costumes, they showed a performance she did a couple of years ago where she donned an Elvis wig and performed “Heartbreak Hotel.” After sharing with the audience how Elvis affected her career, Cher then sang Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.” I really enjoyed her rendition. She did a wonderful job and on everything she sang for that matter. The 90-minute show packed a punch throughout. Other songs sung included “All Or Nothing,” “All I Ever Need Is You,” “Welcome

to Burlesque,” “Lie to Me,” “After All,” “The Shoop Shoop Song,” “Bang Bang,” “I Found Someone,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” and the closer, “Believe.” I did find that it didn’t feel like an actual concert though. It seemed more like a Vegas show, as if I were watching her residency there — which is great — but if you were expecting a deafening, rowdy concert, that is not what you paid for. Her five-piece band was great. It sounded as though they were playing to tracks at some points in the show, especially for the bigger numbers and technical ones. There is no way a five-piece band could sound that full in certain songs. There was a lead guitar player who was great and everyone thought it was her son but I felt she meant to do that. She wanted people to think it was Elijah. Her bass player, keyboard player and drummer were fantastic. She also had two female background singers. I heard some people claim she was lip syncing. I can tell you from where I was and from what I could see, she definitely wasn’t. She may have sung along on the larger, techy songs — but it was clearly all her. Of course, the background singers sounded just like her to make Cher’s voice more on point. But when she sang by herself, it was all Cher. She was the sexiest 73-year-old I have ever seen. She wasn’t tired, her voice was never out of breath and she strutted across the stage and even did a couple of dance moves. She was simply amazing. Brava Cherilyn Sarkissian. It was an absolute pleasure spending the evening with her and I would be happy to do it again. And as long as she continues to look and sound the way she did, she’ll be performing for many, many more years to come.
