A FRIEND’S GIVING By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com
W
hen one walks into Raj’s Deli, at 750 Washington Ave., Belleville, just steps away from the border that leads into Nutley, it’s not all that overwhelming or impressive. It’s much like any other deli, with a counter filled with candy, lighters and winning lottery tickets. There’s canned/boxed food and chips along the wall to the left and to the right is a deli case with a large ham, some sliceable cheeses and a few other meats. A gigantic meat slicer lives above the meat case. Toward the back, there’s milk, Gatorade and all sorts of other juices. Oh, and, there’s freshly brewed Colombian coffee toward the back — and man was it good.
Pretty ordinary-sounding, though, isn’t it? Yet tucked away, practically hidden from plain sight, next to the deli case and before the large fridges of drinks is something you aren’t going to find anywhere else — sand art, drawn by the hands of Raj’s wife. The “painting” is of an innocent Indian woman who is looking to find happiness and love. The details are almost impossible to believe. The woman’s ring nose, though it is created with sand, looks real. The shadows on the woman’s cheeks — and her blemishes — are beyond realistic. The entire piece is so good, it’s almost impossible to believe it was made with human hands. It’s really like nothing you’ve ever seen before. That’s how good it is.

STATE CHAMPS! Lyndhurst wins first crown since 1983 By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com
T
he Lyndhurst High School football team (pictured at right) continued its brilliant season Friday night, defeating Parsippany, 26-7, to capture the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group II state championship. With the victory, the Golden Bears captured the school’s first state championship since 1983. The win also pushed the Golden Bears’ record this season to 11-0, matching the aforementioned 1983 team for
the school record for wins in a season. There was one other plus from the victory. The Golden Bears will now face Section 2 champion Verona for the overall North Jersey Group II championship on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at MetLife Stadium. Yes, the Golden Bears will take the 3.2 mile journey from Lyndhurst to the Mecca of New Jersey sports facilities, MetLife in the Meadowlands. That pretty much sums up the spectacular event that transpired last Friday night.

township. “It has come to the township’s attention that unlicensed, door-to-door solicitors are going around attempting to sell very expensive water filters and/ or treatment systems. It is my opinion, based on several reports, that such individuals are using extremely deceptive sales techniques and may in fact be specifically targeting our Hispanic Community,” Melham said. “I am infuriated to hear reports of solicitors saying ‘they are working with the township,’ and that ‘the mayor sent them.’” Melham says he has not authorized any company to peddle water filters anywhere in Belleville. “The township has not asked any company to solicit. The township is not working with any outside testing company. The township is not helping to offset the cost of any third-party water filters or treatment systems,” he said. “Let me be clear — this mayor, this council, this administration and certainly this police department will not tolerate any person or business preying on our residents.” In Belleville, all solicitors must first obtain a permit and be clearly identified when going door to door to sell. “If you suspect anyone of not being licensed, or sense overly strong sales tactics or deceptive sales techniques, or you simply feel uncomfortable, I strongly urge you to call our police
department,” the mayor said. “Nobody should ever be fearful of calling upon our police. We also have plenty of homegrown Spanish-speaking officers if you are more comfortable communicating in your native language.” Melham encourages anyone who may have encountered these solicitors to call the Belleville PD immediately, especially if you have them recorded on a video doorbell. The Belleville PD, meanwhile, has already made an arrest of someone who reportedly used these “aggressive” tactics to try to strongarm a resident into buying said filters. On Nov. 16, the Belleville PD says its detectives conducted an operation following a tip from a resident. The detectives posed as residents and then dealt with the “technician.” During that operation, police say, a “saleswoman” told the undercover detectives they needed filters on every faucet — and that the overall cost to install them would be $12,000. With the investigation in its early stages, police say they obtained the saleswoman’s valid ID and issued her a summons for soliciting without a permit. Melham, meanwhile, praised police for pulling their investigation together quickly. “Thank you, BPD, for organizing and mobilizing as fast as you did to protect our community,” the mayor said.

with Street Smart NJ and we are confident that the program will have a positive impact on pedestrian and motorist safety here in Lyndhurst,” Lyndhurst PD Chief Richard L. Jarvis said. Pedestrian safety is a concern nationwide, but it is particularly important in New Jersey, which the federal government has designated a pedestrian safety focus state for its high rate of fatalities and injuries. Pedestrians comprised 29% (183 people) of the 624 people killed in crashes in New Jersey in 2017, nearly double the national average of 16%, according to the most recent data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Jersey ranks 13th in the nation in pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people. On average, one pedestrian is killed every two days in New Jersey and 12 are injured daily. Street Smart NJ is one of many initiatives in New Jersey working to help the state reach its goal of zero pedestrian fatalities. The campaign reminds people that everyone has a role to play in making streets safer. Drivers need to obey speed limits and stop for people crossing; people walking need to use crosswalks (marked and
unmarked) and cross with the signals. Everyone must avoid distractions. During the campaign, educational materials will be on display throughout the community and on the Lyndhurst PD’s social media platforms. The statewide Street Smart NJ campaign is managed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and began in 2013. Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in helping to promote the Street Smart NJ message in Lyndhurst should contact Sgt. Nick Coviello, of the Lyndhurst PD’s Traffic Bureau at 201-939-2900, ext. 2625, or by email at ncoviello@ lyndhurstpolice.com. To learn more about the campaign, visit bestreetsmartnj.org. yndhurst Mayor Robert Giangeruso, through his attorney Ian Doris, has responded to the report of a federal lawsuit filed against him, four years ago, by a local resident. Doris released the following statement Monday, Nov. 25, on the mayor’s behalf. “David Sevilla’s lawsuits against Mayor Robert Giangeruso and Commissioner Thomas DiMaggio are based on his extreme dislike of both men and nothing more. “When the defendants notified Sevilla they considered his lawsuit against DiMaggio frivolous, that case was dismissed. “The lawsuit against the
mayor is also outrageous. Sevilla’s claim that Mayor Giangeruso sent police to his house in 2014 as some form of payback for the plaintiff speaking to HUD investigators in 2011, is utterly meritless and Sevilla abandoned that claim during the oral argument on our motion to dismiss, but not before dragging the mayor and the taxpayers of Lyndhurst through the long discovery process. “Sevilla’s meritless case against Giangeruso has been exposed through the discovery process which is why all but one of Sevilla’s causes of action have been dismissed. “We have asked the court
to reconsider the decision to allow the First Amendment claim to proceed to trial and based on the law, we believe the remainder of the plaintiff’s case should be dismissed. “The mayor looks forward to exposing Sevilla’s true motivation for his lawsuits, his vengeful use of the legal system to carry out his own personal agenda and to refute the outrageous claims made by Sevilla against him.” Sevilla currently operates a Lyndhurst-based website that has often been extremely critical of Giangeruso, DiMaggio and other elected officials in the township. — Kevin Canessa
KPD: What’s in a name? Potentially $10,000 By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com On Nov. 8, the Kearny Police Department was contacted by the Kearny Avenue branch of One Main Financial to report that a man had applied for a $10,000 loan by fraudulently using the identity of another man, a 29-year-old New Egypt resident. Authorities said the loan application had originated in Plumsted, N.J., but the fraudster had made an appointment to appear at the Kearny branch to finalize the loan and receive his check. [FYI: New Egypt is part of Plumsted and they are in Ocean County.] On Nov. 19, KPD Det. Jordenson Jean positioned himself in the Kearny

branch to await the applicant’s arrival. At about 3 p.m., Jean watched as the suspect arrived and identified himself to office staff as the New Egypt man, even submitting a fraudulent New York motor vehicle registration card in the victim’s name, police said. Prior to the suspect’s receiving his $10,000 check, Jean interceded. Police said the applicant twice falsely identified himself to Jean by using the identity-theft victim’s name, then used his own name but with a false spelling. The suspect was arrested and positively identified as Dwayne M. Lynch Jr., 26, of Newark.

PSE&G warns customers of phone and email scams
You may have seen an incoming call on your landline — or perhaps even mobile phone — with the Caller ID identifying the call as from PSE&G. If you answered, they may have asked for a payment, your credit card information or something else personal. The thing is, in most cases, those calls are not really from PSE&G — so it’s pretty clear scammers out there are doing a great job of spoofing telephone numbers so the incoming calls look legitimate, despite being completely fraudulent. As such, PSE&G is offering advice on
how to deal with such calls, which have significantly grown in number of late. According to the utility company, sometimes impostors will contact PSE&G customers demanding immediate payment and threatening service shut off. Don’t be a victim ... be prepared. There are several kinds of scams — not just on the telephone.
Phone scams Residential and small business customers have reported receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be
PSE&G employees. Payment is demanded within hours using a pre-paid debit card. Things to know: • PSE&G offers a variety of payment options and would never require a specific type of payment. • Customers scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice on their bill at least 15 days in advance. • PSE&G will never ask for personal information over the phone unless you initiated the contact. If you ever doubt the legitimacy of a call from PSE&G, especially if payment is demanded, hang
up and call the company directly.
Email scams PSE&G customers have reported receiving convincing-looking emails that are actually fraudulent. Emails sent by PSE&G would never: • Threaten to close your account if you do not take immediate action. • Ask customers to provide personal information online without first logging into “My Account.” Should you receive a suspicious email don’t reply, click any links or download any attachments.

Crash takes the life of Lyndhurst woman, 40: LPD By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A 40-year-old Lyndhurst woman died after the vehicle she was driving reportedly struck a tree on Chubb Avenue, Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the public-information officer of the Lyndhurst Police
Department said. At 7:15 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, Auteri says officers responded to a report of a car that crashed into a tree. Police found a severely damaged 2009 Chevy Tahoe upon arrival and the woman was declared dead at the scene. While the investigation is
ongoing, Auteri says speed appears to have been a factor in the fatal crash. The speed limit, where the crash occurred, is 25 MPH. The victim, whose name is not being released, was reportedly on her way to work and as just a quartermile away from her home, an apartment complex.
POLICE BEAT “We have reason to believe that the victim may have lost consciousness prior to the crash,” Auteri said. “An autopsy has been conducted
to determine whether the driver may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the fatal crash. Results of the autopsy are not immediately expected.” The Lyndhurst Fire Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Lyndhurst at the crash, Auteri said.

The Lyndhurst Police Department welcomed Supt. Gen. Sang Ryul Lee, of the Korean National Police Agency, to its headquarters, on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Lee has been assigned to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for a year to conduct research on community affairs and social media, and how it is utilized by law enforcement. Lee took a tour of LPD headquarters and got a firsthand look at some of vehicles and equipment. ‘We certainly agree that, no matter where you are in the world, effective communication will help to provide a healthy relationship with the community you serve,’ Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the Lyndhurst PD’s public-information officer said. ‘We would like to extend our thanks to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for allowing us to open the doors of our department to such a well-respected national police official.’

first to speak, but as he approached the podium, a member of the NJSEA’s governing body called for a point of order before he could begin his remarks. “For the record, after last month’s meeting, this authority came to the conclusion that we want to be committed to permanently closing the Keegan Landfill — at some point,” Commissioner and former Chairman of the Bergen County Republican Organization Robert B. Yudin, who grew up in Belleville and who now lives in Wyckoff, said. “We are committed to permanently closing it. Now, a statement went out but it wasn’t picked up by any publications. It is on our website. I just wanted to make that point so that it is on the record.” Editor’s note: The Observer did quote the statement in October, despite the Yudin’s incorrect assertion. What was so perplexing about this statement is that, as many already know, the Keegan Landfill is already closed and has been since Judge Jeff Jablonski ordered it shut months ago temporarily and then for good last month. This all prompted this journalist to ask the NJSEA commissioners why it was necessary to reopen the landfill just to close it. And in response, NJSEA Chairman John Ballantyne said his authority was attempting to appeal the closure so that what he called “inaccurate information” in Jablonski’s decision could be “clarified.” If that were truly the case, this newspaper offered to publish all of the information the NJSEA saw as “inaccurate,” if it would drop the appeal; however, this offer,
Robert B. Yudin Ballantyne said, would have to be determined “by the town,” even though it is the NJSEA appealing Jablonski’s decision and not the town itself. Meanwhile, when Santana, whose Second Ward is home to the landfill, did finally get to speak, he did so calmly, passionately and with clear frustration, noting that since the ordeal at the landfill began, he and his wife welcomed a son to this world over the summer, a son who might possibly be suffering from the effects of the landfill. “Commissioners, you’re committed, but in the meantime, God knows what the consequences will be, which is respiratory issues, throat, eyes, ears,” he said. “Our neighbors are complaining and we deal with them every day … I have a 4-month-old boy who was born in July. He’s having issues now. He’s had breathing issues. So what is that for? Where is that coming from? “I don’t know — it could be the landfill. It could be the gas … but I have others who are complaining for the same thing, so I might as well think it’s from the hydrogen sulfide … so nothing will suffice but the capping of the

A
fire at the All Guard Fence Company on Gutheil Place, Lyndhurst, caused some damage, and one firefighter sustained a knee injury at the Nov. 21 blaze, Paul Haggerty, deputy commissioner of the Lyndhurst Fire Department, said late last week. Haggerty says that at 11:58 p.m. that night, the Lyndhurst Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire and on arrival, Second Assistant Chief Nicholas Haggerty confirmed a working fire, reporting visible flames from an attached garage area and roof line. First Assistant Chief Robert Ferrara then arrived on scene moments later and assumed command. A F.A.S.T. Team was dispatched from the North Arlington Fire Department — Rescue 5. Engine 1 arrived on scene and aggressively knocked down the main body of fire with an 1 3/4” line while Truck 1 arrived and forced entry to the garage area overhead door and performed vertical ventilation. Engine 3 then arrived, subsequently laying a supply line to Engine 1 from Ridge Road. Rescue 4 detailed their crew to assist Truck 1 with a roof-ventilation operation and later provided cascade services. The fire was placed under

control within 15 minutes, with extensive overhaul operations necessary caused by several small deep pockets of fire that remained. As a result of the blaze, one firefighter sustained a knee injury and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, for evaluation. The fire was being investigated by the Lyndhurst Fire Prevention Bureau with the assistance of the Lyndhurst Police Criminal Investigations Division. Chief Matt Rodriguez commended all on scene for their aggressive fire attack and overall fireground operations. Lyndhurst police patrol units evacuated second floor tenants of the attached structure as fire units were arriving. No civilians were injured.

W.H.A.T. will perform the stage version based on the classic and adapted by Mountain Community Theatre. For additional information and advance tickets, visit www.whatco.org or call 201467-8624. Nutley FD offers tips for safe Thanksgiving cooking With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, Nutley’s Public Safety Director Alphonse Petracco and Deputy Fire Chief Paul Cafone have shared firesafety tips for all readers of The Observer newspaper. First, as a reminder, if you didn’t do so yet, be sure to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Test and make sure every detector in your residence works properly. Thanksgiving is a festive celebration for families, but according to the National Fire Protection Association, it is also the leading day for home cooking fires. Petracco wants to ensure all Nutley families and friends in other towns are safe during the holiday season by taking the following firesafety precautions: • Clean your oven before cooking for the holidays. • Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to
FIRE & SAFETY TIPS leave the kitchen, even for a minute, turn off the stove. • When cooking a turkey, check on it frequently and don’t leave the house. • Keep flammable things, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, your clothing or food packaging away from the stovetop. • Use a lid to smother small grease fires by sliding the lid over the pan and turning off the stovetop. Never put water on a grease fire. • If you are going to deep fry a turkey, place the fryer away from the house and anything combustible. Fully defrost the turkey before lowering it into the hot oil or it can cause an explosion. • Replace all decorative, fire-burning candles with battery-operated candles. — Kevin Canessa

Dr. Prakash J. Doshi FIGHT DIABETES WITH HEALTHY HABITS
According to the CDC’s National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2017, cases of diabetes in this country have risen to 30.3 million people (9.4% of the population). Because diabetes is linked with serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, and kidney failure, it remains the seventh leading cause of death. These sobering statistics should lead those with diabetes to do everything they can to live healthier lives. This strategy is best begun with the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits. According to recent research of adults with type-2 diabetes, those who did not smoke, followed a healthy diet, consumed alcohol moderately, and got at least 150 minutes of weekly exercise were 68% less likely to die
from a cardiovascular problem. To manage your blood glucose, you need to balance what you eat and drink with physical activity and diabetes medicine, if you take any. What you choose to eat, how much you eat, and when you eat are all important in keeping your blood glucose level in the range that your health care team recommends. Please call PREMIER CARE ASSOCIATES OF WEST HUDSON at 201-998-7474, or walk in 7 days a week. Our office is located at 512 Kearny Ave., Suite B. P.S. According to the study mentioned above, the cardiovascular benefit that diabetics derived from adopting healthier habits persisted regardless of the study participant’s blood sugar levels.

Child’s tesimony leads to conviction: ECPO An Essex County jury has convicted a Belleville man of of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl who took the stand to help put him away, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said last week. Jose Santana, 59, of Belleville, assaulted the little girl whilst she was visiting him and his wife at their Belleville home, Stephens said. Following a trial before Superior Court Judge Martin G. Cronin, the jury convicted Santana on all charges — three counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
CRIME & COURTS In addition to sexually assaulting the victim, he reportedly forced her to watch child pornography. When officers executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home, they discovered child pornography on his computer. “The victim, a brave little 9-year-old girl, found the courage and the strength to tell her mother, and the jury, how the defendant had violated her. The day she testified was the day she took back her dignity,” Assistant Prosecutor Peter C. Polidoro, who tried the case with

Protrusion of the eyeball out of its socket (“exophthalmos”) indicates an underlying disorder. Grave’s disease is the most common cause of the condition. It results in eye problems such as corneal dryness and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the eye). Grave’s disease is an autoimmune disease that causes “hyperthyroidism,” which involves an overactive thyroid gland that produces excess hormones that cause it to grow and the soft tissues and muscles around the eyes to become swollen and inflamed. Hyperthyroidism (or, in some cases, hypothyroidism) may not cause the eyes to protrude immediately. Because treating the underlying thyroid problem may not resolve
exophthalmos, surgical options such as orbital decompression, eye muscle surgery, or eyelid surgery may be needed. If left untreated, the eyelids may fail to close during sleep, resulting in the cornea drying and being damage. If the cornea dries out too much, there is a risk of infection or ulcers, which can damage vision. People with exophthalmos are more likely to develop conjunctivitis. Assistant Prosecutor Tony Gutierrez, said. “The victim’s credibility was corroborated, in this case, when she stated that the defendant had made her watch child pornography
and subsequently, after a search warrant was executed, a laptop that we tied to the defendant was found to contain child pornographic videos and pictures,” Gutierrez said.
The defendant now faces 25 years to life in New Jersey State Prison on each of the aggravated sexual assault counts when Cronin sentences him Jan. 12, 2020.

You may have noticed the newest additions to two signs on historically problematic streets pertaining to speeding. At no cost to taxpayers, funded entirely through forfeited funds, solar-powered speed-monitoring signs have been installed on Kingsland and Page avenues. The speed signs are monitoring both lanes of travel. This technology has been implemented to serve as a friendly reminder for motorists to slow down and monitor their speed. There are additional locations being analyzed by the Lyndhurst PD’s traffic division for future deployment. The permanently mounted devices will also augment portable speed trailers that are deployed based on complaints received from the public, crash data and statistical enforcement action data.

OBITUARIES JOSEPH P. RUSSELL
Joseph P. Russell of Kearny died peacefully at home Nov. 19, 2019. He was 86. Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kearny. Entombment was in
LYNDHURST from 12 had six tackles and one sack. Defensive end Michael Renta had nine tackles and a sack. Cornerback John Rodriguez, who also had two receptions for 77 yards, was sensational at his cornerback slot. “He made a lot of great plays,” Tuero said of Rodriguez. “He played lock down defense.” Tuero was impressed with the way the defense performed. “Oh yeah, we were smothering them,” Tuero said. “We did a good job smacking them around.” Tuero said that the Golden Bears’ loss to Rutherford last year in the sectional title game played a gigantic role this time around. “I think we wanted it more,” Tuero said. “I think we had experience being there before, being there last year and that helped. We really wanted it.” It also helped tremendously that the Golden Bears jumped out to a 20-0 lead. Partyla scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter and a 23-yard run in the second quarter. The lead was pushed to 20-0 when Partyla hit Rodriguez for a 34-yard touchdown pass in the same quarter, then the Red Hawks’ Nana Agyemang returned the ensuing kick for an 80-yard kickoff touchdown. Lembo scored the game’s final touchdown on a 9-yard TD in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. “I was just waiting for the A Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Never Known to Fail) O Most Beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Carmen Soraluz died Nov. 19, 2019. She was 96. Private arrangements were by the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. Carmen’s final disposition will be
in Peru. Carmen was a nurse in Peru before moving to Manhattan. She also worked many years as a nurse at Christ Hospital in Jersey City. The sister of the late Julio, Eladio, Cristina, Segunda, Adalberto, Lucio and Eugenio Soraluz, she was survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
clock to run out,” Tuero said. “I thought dreams really do come true.” Tuero was asked if he thought it would ever be possible that he would lead his alma mater to a state championship. When Tuero took over a few years ago, the program was still in the state of flux, compounded when the former head coach Scott Rubinetti was arrested and charged with having sex with a 17-year-old former student. The coach received five years probation as part of the
sentence. Needless to say, Tuero, along with top assistant Joe Castagnetti, another former head coach, helped to turn the program around and started to move in the right direction. “I probably didn’t think it could happen,” Tuero said. “I knew I could change the culture and create a new one.” But after last year – and then winning the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference championship earlier this month – Tuero knew it was coming.
“I expected to go back to where we were last year,” Tuero said. “After we won the NJIC, I knew.” And now, the Golden Bears are headed to MetLife for a memorable experience. “These kids are going to be so excited,” Tuero said. “I can’t wait to see the whole town there. It’s going to be packed.” For now, there’s a title that Lyndhurst has to enjoy: State Champs! “We are state champs,” Tuero said. “No one can ever take
that away from us. But we’re not satisfied. We want to be 12-0. We want to win our last game.” But when the trophy was placed in Tuero’s hands, he said he liked the feeling. “You can’t put it to words,” Tuero said. “I’m so proud of these kids. We’ve been through it all. The first year, we were 4-6 and now, here we are. As soon as the Rutherford game ended last year, we geared up and said, ‘Let’s go. Let’s get it going.’ It obviously worked.”

landfill. Nothing.” Santana also noted, correctly, that hydrogen sulfide levels at the landfill, based on NJSEA figures, met exceedances of 30 parts per billion — the state’s maximumallowable threshold — 15 of the previous 30 days to that point. In fact, on two of those days, there were actually readings above 200 ppb, nearly 7 times the max. “This gas collection system, I’m sorry … 6 of the last 10 days, there were exceedances,” he said. In response to Santana, Ballantyne reiterated that “we are, as a board, committed to closing that (already closed) facility.”
Pinho clearly (again) hits a nerve Other speakers included the aforementioned DeCastro and Pincus and Michael Fernandez, of Kearny, and owner of Harrison’s Pavilion. However, things got heated when Harrison attorney John M. Pinho took to the podium. When he did, it seemed Ballantyne and company immediately turned stiff and defensive as soon as Pinho asked his first question. “Did the commissioners, did the NJSEA, appeal the order
Screencap

closing the Keegan? Did the commissioners themselves approve that appeal?” Pinho asked. The attorney asked the question because nowhere is there, on the record, a public tally of when the vote to appeal took place and which commissioners voted for or against appealing. When a governing body
institutes legal action, it’s not just a unilateral decision. Each member of the body must vote — and to this day, there is no record of the voting ever having taken place — and, naturally, there is no tally as how such a vote went. Ballantyne, in response to Pinho, said the NJSEA wasn’t going to get into a legal discussion with
the attorney who has been at the forefront of the fight to close the Keegan — and who has operated the website www.closekeegan. com for many months to help disseminate information about the process. Pinho argued he wasn’t seeking a legal discussion — he just wanted an answer to when the vote was taken and what its finally tally was. “Who on the commission voted for the appeal and who voted against it?” Pinho again asked with no response. “Silence, for the record … if you can’t answer that question, I don’t know why.” To silence, Pinho also asked the commissioners whether the reason they’re appealing the decision because there are outstanding bonds used for the American Dream project at the Meadowlands. Those bonds, according to NJSEA data , total $1.5 billion and would become “junk” if the NJSEA has no source of revenue from which to pay them off.

And perhaps the most stunning element of the sand art is that Raj’s wife has cancer. “She’s had for seven years,” he says. “She has not been to one doctor since she found she had cancer. No treatment. No medicine. Just faith in God that she is going to be OK.” Raj and his wife met through an arrangement — still commonplace, to this very day, in India. “The first time I saw her I was putting ring on her finger,” he recalls. Now, we found out about Raj purely by fate after he made a call to The Observer’s office on Tuesday, Nov. 19. It just so happened that our coowner Lisa Feorenzo picked up the phone when Raj called. We got a sense Raj was a special man just in the peaceful and calm way he spoke. His voice was very comforting. His hair, covered by a hat that day, is pretty long. He was dressed casually otherwise, in Western-style clothes. But there was this connection, a spiritual dimension if you will, that we both felt when we met Raj for the first time. One of the reasons we stopped by was that earlier in the day, Lisa and I had talked about doing one of our infamous live drives around one of the towns we cover. Yet we couldn’t come up with a destination. That all changed in seconds following Raj’s noontime call.
A few minutes after they hung up, we were in the car, on our way to Belleville from Kearny. Whilst we were talking on the air, Raj stopped — looked at Lisa — and for a moment, you would have thought we said, “Hey, Raj, read this script for us.” At that instant, totally unprompted, he told us The Observer was “his newspaper,” and that he’s been carrying it for 26 years — the exact amount of time he’s owned the deli. But even that wasn’t what made the guy so special. It was the activity that happened when the camera wasn’t rolling that made this journalist to be nearly speechless. He mentioned he grew up in India. “Calcutta, India, in fact,” Raj says. At that moment, I asked if he had ever met Mother Teresa of Calcutta. “Oh yes. Yes,” he says. “When I was kid, we didn’t know who she was, but there was something special we knew. Here, come look at this.” At this point, Raj walks over to the counter and pulls out a book. It’s got Mother Teresa on the cover — and is a pictorial about her life. It was signed by the author, but not Mother, since the book came out after she died. Lisa and I looked at each other in amazement. But it didn’t end there. An elderly man, called Winston, walks in. His posture wasn’t good — in fact, he was practically doubled over. “Hey Raj, how ya doin’?” Winston
asks. “Mr. Winston, hello,” Raj replies. Moments later, he came back with a bag filled provisions. Then Raj added a gigantic can of Progresso chicken noodle soup into the bag which contained a fresh loaf of bread. “Here you go, Winston,” Raj says. Winston, ever grateful, then walked out. Another elderly person, this one called Rose, then came in — all within a five-minute spell. She needed a few paper cups and a couple other items. She also took her chance with a $2 scratch-off, which she paid for with two singles. It turns out Rose used to babysit for one of Raj’s two sons — this one is now 18 (his older brother is a doctor of pharmacy). When the youngest was petit, and Raj and his wife were busy running the store, Rose would swing by to take the little one with her. They’d go to the park. Walk along Washington Avenue. And a host of other activities. These excursions would last anywhere from 7 to 8 hours. When it came time to return the boy, Raj would always want to pay Rose for her time — and for being what could only be described as being an
epic “nanny” if you will. “She would never take even a dime,” Raj says. “Never. Nothing.” It’s all come full circle now, it would appear. Raj makes it a priority to give back to the people who have given to him. And yet, you wouldn’t know this, because Raj’s generosity is generally low-key. He’s definitely not one to blab about all the good things he does for the people of Belleville. Yet here we are telling his story. “This is my little church here,” he says. And boy is it ever. And it’s one church where so many beautiful things happen. Imagine that? At a deli! And it is also a place where there is ever so much for which to be grateful — and thankful.
