A Taichung Game: Reinterpreting A City | Taichung, Taiwan | 2013 Advisors. Rohan Shivkumar, Chih-Feng Su

The project starts with a board game. On the right is the game board of the game GANJ, which dates back to the Mughal Empire

FIVE ELEMENTS AND THE INTERPRETS

11

The key question in this project is,“How

was the world that we know created?” With that in mind, I go through several

Ex t r a c t

researches, and the outcome is a twofold: We extract raw materials from nature, and then turn them into products; on the other

hand, we abstract meanings from nature,

which later become symbols, especially

written words. Put the previous two formulas together, it’s the culture we get.

N a t u r e

Though they’re intertwined, but if we look closer

to

the

latter,

the

argument

“everything that we acknowledge is a

Abstract

construct of words”appears.

Then I make an analogy between the words and the prisons, since they both use

definitions (meanings/guilt) to distinguish certain

objects/people

from

a

bigger

group that they belong to, which may be

[ C R I M E

called nature/society. This is not merely a

linear process; it circulates within itself, establishing a complete loop system. Words are prisons in the end.

Before the Japanese colonial

period, prisons were more like detention centers, and the

plan figure was just like the Chinese word of crime.

With this key analogy, it leads to the old Taichung Prison as the site. Built in 1899, it was considered a symbol of modern and

advance back then. Since the prison moved away in 1992, its trace nearly disappears, as the north-south axis been taken over by new grid system (45°). The

site had been long fragmented, serving as several parking lots right now. Metaphoria contains

ground/underground, while shifting the upper floors to the current grids axis.

The programs are all settled around words and paper; hence the books could be regarded as users, too. Their destination is either

dungeon-like archive underground, or to disappear in the incineration tower on the

floor.

Between

these

two

abstractions of words, extractions (paper recycling, paper making, printing) lie in the middle, which could be a new tourist spot for citizens.

MIRROR

Collective Housing & Working | Taichung, Taiwan | 2010 Advisor. Bo-Jun Tang

This project begins with the analysis of

Villa Hague designed by Bernard Tschumi.

Being applied with the principles, it turns

into a prototype which included mirroring relationship, two complete cores on each side, and an intermediate space within. The two sides in the prototype are two layers: Working and cooking are at the

at the upper. The void core at lower level faces the intermediate space of the entire

building, while the upper solid core faces the beautiful view of greenery.
