the ski extends the foot A necessary means to survival, skiing originated in prehistoric times as the most efficient way to move from one place to another in winter climates.

the motor extends the location of skiing Serving recreational needs, skiing evolved to function as a leisure activity where the user employs secondary forms of transportation such as an automobile or ski-lift.

the simulation extends the availability of skiing A piece of exercise equipment, skiing evolved to exist as an artificial representation of the actual experience that can be used freely and in any climate.

the unit extends the simulation Now a single and complete object assembled of metal and wood components, the unit serves as an extension of the simulation and exhibits the inherent process of expansion and compression in which urban wood replaces the user.

The Unit The assembled unit is composed of black metal frames, which were prioritized for their functional and material properties, from a NordicTrack Classic Pro Skier found in a Chicago resale store, urban wood from the park West Chicago, and purchased bolts that serve as fasteners. These materials provide a stark contrast between warm and cool colors and textures, and the symbiotic relationship they generate allows the unit to exist in both static and kinetic states.

Translating Streetscape Situated along Pilsen’s bustling cultural artery, 18th Street, and the future public grade level trail, ‘The Paseo,’ the mixed-use housing development aims to translate conditions conducive to fostering neighborly relationships into a vertical construct. How does one experience a residential streetscape in a mixed-use building? How can ‘The Paseo’ connect the city, neighborhood, and individual? How can new developments acknowledge Pilsen’s heritage? These questions informed the programmatic elements of theatre, bar, and barber shop, which integrate seamlessly with the building’s residential program to construct a project that in its entirety functions as a performance piece. *Team project with Caleb Vick

vertical sidewalk To replicate the conditions that initiate interaction and create neighborly relationships along a residential street, the entrance to each unit features an open patio space accessible to all building residents. These patio spaces, in addition to the social stair between the building’s two primary masses, are vital components along one’s vertical movement. This movement also incorporates a shared rooftop garden and culminates with a south-facing observation lounge.

In the era following a post-industrial society, how can a field + house embody, objectify, and institutionalize human, cultural, social, economic, and physical capital while revitalizing urban remnants? park 567 fieldhouse(s) Wicker Park / Bucktown Chicago, Illinois, USA

urban residue Since the creation of Milwaukee Avenue a multitude of infrastructural processes, such as the Bloomingdale Trail and CTA Blue Line, political process, such as community and ward divisions, and built structures have fragmented the urban fabric of the area adjacent to Park 567. Because a field and house are not disparate elements, an elevated plaza geometrically constructed by the superimposed lines of primary

Chicago streets connects the two houses and forces inhabitants to converge on the site. The ability for an inhabitant to observe, passively listen, and actively participate in all programs contained within the houses facilitates a hybridized co-working experience. The existing economic potential, emerging demographic, and collective optimism demand the presence of a field + house that incubates capital through convergence.

urban data analysis The profusion of publicly-accessible data in our society affords the opportunity to perform computational research and analysis. Using GIS mapping technologies, the inherent and explicit relationships between transportation, demographics, and Craigslist data were used to create a schema to locate zones with the greatest probability of finding a garage sale in Chicago.

Compositional School Landscape A model Chicago Public School where the exterior of the school is the interior of the city. Using the Montessori Method as a program and typological precedent, the school landscape plays in pivotal role in the sequence a student make from home, school, to neighborhood. After a linear school organization was composed, the operation of folding the landscape onto itself creates hybrid learning environments.

ethic + aesthetic The Greenhouse Condominiums originated out of Lincoln Park Project 1, an urban renewal project where Gertrude Lempp Kerbis acted as both an architect and developer. She was challenged by the ethic conditions of economic factors and fire codes, and excelled with the aesthetic obligation of designing to attract the masses.

articulation + suppression The architect both reveals and conceals the structural systems that compose the Greenhouse Condominiums. The primary steel structure is articulated only in the greenhouses and is not expressed to the interior spaces. Furthermore, the brick facade conforms to surrounding structures and suppresses the primary structural assembly.

processional thresholds

structure + skin

The processional path one takes to arrive at their individual unit phases through multiple thresholds of public and private areas. These thresholds can be represented as an investigation of temporal boundaries and relative positioning of the body. The division of public and private spaces assume a vertical hierarchy within the condominiums and demonstrate the intended programmatic use.

Simultaneously the pinwheel organization system acts as a design principle and a structural device. The Greenhouse Condominiums implement a moment frame of steel columns and beams as its primary structural system. Wood studs that form the interior wall surfaces are then inserted into this system. A brick veneer acts as the skin of the building and interacts with the environment. Though resembling a curtain wall system from the exterior, standard window frames placed between aluminum columns form the greenhouses.

compositional analysis A pinwheel organization system rotates major walls in plan around the center point of the Condominiums, which is located following the north to south and east to west rectangular grid of the Condominiums. The dimensions of a typical duplex greenhouse provide the dimensions of this grid. The individual units are also rotated around the center point, so that each of the southern units has a self-similar pair on the northern side.

housing inventory A survey of domestic bungalow architecture was conducted and critically reconstructed into a sculptural object. The monolithic construction is clad in marble, questioning the limit between nostalgia and futurism. This is a speculation which demonstrates the commonplace and the artlessness of the non-pedigree architecture.
