LETTER FROM THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR

SPRING

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Photography by Matthew Winklemeyer, Getty images

First off, I want to say how much I admire and appreciate all of you. Thank you for reading! Since the last time I had the privilege to write to you, things are really going well. We are taking-off because of your support! Barnes and Noble along with Books a Million has picked up LAPALME nationwide! It was a truly happy day when my business partner called to share the amazing news! It takes a village to make it all happen & this letter is dedicated to our wonderful team that understands the philosophy within the magazine to; help, teach, inspire, love and have a damn good time doing it! For the young and forever young at heart, this issue is about keeping your heart and style in an unbelievably fun and vibrant place. I have been a personal stylist to everyone from supermodel Miranda Kerr to Midwest housewives -- there’s a mix in who I style, but always a positive vibe. The common thread to my style philosophy is that we have an uplifting time! Style, beauty & life should all be enjoyable. When you are truly in the moment, it always shows! The epitome of this philosophy is within the new issue and our cover star, Audrina Partridge. Even though Los Angeles is a large city, the cliques are small. She is a bestie of a close friend of mine and meeting fabulous girls is one of my favorite past times. Her life as a reality star, who came out the other side winning is unbelievable. To marry your long time sweetheart with a baby on the way is an amazing place to be. Audrina is one of the most well adjusted reality stars that I have ever met. We had such a good time shooting her cover and dressing her up. I always encourage my pregnant clients to embrace the magic inside of them and just really have fun with it. Audrina is a stunning mom-to-be, very humble and she was glowing! It was a wow kinda day. Then of course, our fashion and beauty in this issue is all about having a fabulous time! Bright colors, bold graphics and a ‘lil bit of kitsch makes the pages come to life. It is spring after all, a time of reawakening, new ideas and new life. Cheers to spring!

THE ILLUSTRIOUS BARISTA

THE ILLUSTRIOUS BARISTA Brewing the perfect latte might be an art form, but Michael Breach takes it well beyond.

ANNA WINTOUR

At 31 years old, Brooklyn Michael Breach is quite a talented artist. Rather than showcase his vision on canvas, Breach expresses his artistry in a most unique fashion - he curates in latte foam. The uniqueness of his latte presentations are as bright as the smiles of those sipping his creations. Breach is loved all over by the stars and morning shows across America. How did you get into latte art? It’s one of those things that just kind of happened. I learned the regular designs like flowers and leaves and I really just wanted to blow people’s minds and do something funny and found a way to do that using coffee as my medium.

writer

LAUREN JEWORSKI

How long did it take you to perfect your craft? I am still perfecting my art all the time. Constantly pushing the envelope from where I have been to where I can go. On average, how long does it take you to create a face or image in the foam? It doesn’t take as long as one may think. When I am doing a party or an event I really love to challenge myself with the speed at which LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

THE ILLUSTRIOUS BARISTA

SPRING

I can create a foamy likeness. In about five minutes, I turn an ordinary latte into someone’s smiling face. Can you explain to me your creative process? My creative process usually involves coffee and puns. I can’t resist a good celeb pun! Weather or not it’s Kurt Cobean, Al Paccinoccino, Selena Foamez, or even Tupac Mug Life. I just really love entertaining people. I found a way to do so through coffee.

DEREK WARBURTON

You’ve gotten some amazing coverage in the press and worked at some incredible events. Is there a particular show or event that stands out to you as your favorite? I’ve been all over the world and have even done my coffees for royalty. My favorite event so far was when I was making coffees at Joe Jonas’ Christmas party. It was the first time I realized what I was doing had reached the top level... My next goal is to do a party for Rihanna! One day... CARA DELE-BEAN

You are like Superwomen doing it all! From TV, to red carpets, blogging, producing shows and being a Mom, how do you balance it all and make time to be successful in everything? Motherhood makes you feel like a superwoman. After going through labor and delivering a baby girl... I really feel this new urge of strength and truly believe that I can conquer any obstacle. us women manage to make it happen. The best secret I can share to prioritize. Passion is my fuel and drives me to keep working, creating new things and live my dreams. I truly feel like I have my dream job and enjoy every second. In the end, I really do feel like woman can have it all. You have interviewed a lot of celebrities between your show and reporting. What is your most memorable interview moment? My favorite interview in the last nine years of hosting, it would have to be Oprah Winfrey. I grew up idolizing her and it was such an honor to speak with her. I recently told her that she is the main reason that I have a talk show. She was super sweet and even rubbed my belly - I was nine months pregnant at the time. It was a special moment...I felt the baby kick. I think Collette was more excited than I was! Tell me about your work on Obsev.com and “The Lowdown With Diana Madison”. Obsev.com is the latest property that my company (Shandy media) has launched. It is the perfect destination for millennials seeking content in the world

of entertainment, sports, food, lifestyle and style. My online talk show, “The Lowdown With Diana Madison” can be found on Obsev.com and is going into its third season. I came up with the idea over three years ago, when I was thinking about what my dream job would be. In this day and age, I believe that if you have an idea, then you make it happen for yourself. You can’t sit there and wait - or daydream - you must create the platform for yourself. How has the internet/ social media changed how you work? I believe social media is a great way to share your content. We have become editors of our own lives. I have been to places around the world where people have come up to me and told me that they follow me on Instagram and I have helped them deal with a bad day with my inspirational posts. Hearing comments like that only pushes me to create and inspire more. The downfall of social media, however, is that it’s very easy to be a target. I have dealt with my share of bullying, but you can’t let those comments get to you. If anything, social media has helped me get thicker skin.

23

SPRING

You always look amazing at all the award shows! What’s in your red carpet survival kit and how can we get red carpet ready like you? In my red carpet survival kit you can find double sided tape (in case of a wardrobe malfunction) a protein bar to snack on, water to hydrate and mints. Hairspray and blotting paper is a must! I also like to get a microdermabrasion facial a week before any red carpet. Tanning is a must in order to have your skin glow on that red carpet and hide all imperfections. No matter what you do, confidence is key! You really have to own it in order to look your best! What trends are you most excited about for Spring / Summer 2016? I am a girl who loves trends, I talk about fashion trends all the time on my style blog nyoblog.com (not your ordinary blog). I love when fashion takes inspiration from the 70’s. My best friend Michael Costello has also been inspired by the 70’s by doing a lot of funky jumpsuits. Beauty is also taking inspiration from the 70’s. We will be seeing a lot of funky blue smokey eyes, with nude lips mixed with big hair. It’s interesting because Troy Jensen who does my glam recently made me do a 70’s inspired pregnancy shoot and we had worked the big 70’s hair and makeup, it’s great to see that only a couple of months later, a lot of designers are incorporating the same beauty looks in their collection.

DAWN GARCIA

It’s safe to say we’ve all used the hashtag #FoodPorn at one point or another after tasting (or seeing) a plate that wowed our senses! Now? There’s an entire show devoted to you and your secret finds. Introducing FYI’s new show, “Food Porn,” hosted by restaurateur and all around cool guy, Michael Chernow. This show is devoted to exploring the dishes you’ve tagged on social media with those two endearing words. It seems this quest has become a bit of a phenomena in the U.S. With over 70 millions posts on Instagram alone using that hashtag, Michael Chernow has his work cut out for him. Chernow takes on one dish at a time, traveling across America to meet with tastemakers and chefs to see if your finds really live up to the title. To get a feel for just how Michael began his journey with food, we start at the beginning.

MICHAEL CHERNOW - FOOD PORN

We’d love to learn the story about the first meal you had as a kid that drew you to food. From as early as I can remember, healthy food is what excited me - aside from Kraft Mac N Cheese. But in all seriousness, I have always loved fruit and vegetables over meat and sugar. My mother still tells stories about how I would only eat salad growing up, didn’t like meat, and would leave the room to play when dessert came out. When I was 13 years old I got a job in a vegan restaurant delivering food. This was the first time I was introduced to kale, soba noodles, pressed vegetable juice and carrot ginger soup. This is when I realized I had a passion. When you were young, what was your favorite “treat”? I loved Kraft Mac & Cheese as a kid. My mom would make it for me in a big bowl when I was a good boy. Like I said earlier, I wasn’t much into sweets, but Sour Patch Kids were a favorite as well. Since you worked for a while as a bartender in NY before getting into the restaurant business, what was one of your favorite drinks to make and experiment with? I loved making drinks with rum. I always thought that coffee/espresso offered an interesting acidity and bitterness that was hard to create with anything else. So, I used to make a drink called, “The Rum Player” made with dark rum, espresso, agave, frangelico, and frothed milk. It was a favorite of mine and others. We read about you and Daniel Holzman imagining “Meatball Shop” when you were 13 - or at least talking about having a restaurant - why were “Meatballs” the key ingredient? It wasn’t always meatballs. We decided on meatballs because they are super versatile, inexpensive to make, incredibly familiar and, lastly, who doesn’t love a good meatball?! What is the craziest meatball you and Daniel ever created? I would say the Jambalaya ball ranks high up in the ranks. It tastes like jambalaya and is loved by all. LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

26

So you’re known to be a huge seafood fan. What inspired your love of seafood? Number 1: Fish is super healthy and delicious. Number 2: There are many, many, many different species of fish so the variety is broad and fun to explore. Number 3: I grew up fishing on the weekends with my after-school sports team. My passion for fishing generated my passion for eating fish. We would catch all the species of fish you see today at my other restaurant, Seamore’s: Fluke, Flounder, Porgy, Blue Fish, Black Fish, Sea Bass, Skate, Sea Robin, etc. Once I got sober at 23, I decided that taking care of my health was the number one priority. It started with what I put into my body, and of course, exercise. Fish became my go-to protein. I just love fish. Wish I had more time to go fishing. What would you say has been one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a restaurateur? The restaurant business is a grind. There are many people and personalities to manage, many costs to control and very little room for error. I would say the toughest part is learning to balance family and work. As a restaurateur, there is never a moment when the work is finished. Never. I go from project to project, solving one problem to the next. If you were in a room full of young and eager chefs and home cooks who were hoping to find their way in the industry, what are the three most important things you’d tell them? 1. Work in restaurants. 2. Work in restaurants. 3. WORK IN RESTAURANTS! What is the most obscure thing you’ve ever eaten? I ate whole fried frogs when I was living with a family in Thailand. Not the legs, the whole thing!

MICHAEL CHERNOW - FOOD PORN

SPRING

Throughout your travels in your career, and now on Food Porn, what would you say have been the Top 3 most awe-inspiring dishes you’ve tasted? • Uni and Ikura at the TSUKIGI Market in Tokyo • A Baby Squid and White Beans dish from the PINOTXO BAR in Barcelona • State Bird with provisions at the STATE BIRD in San Francisco As someone who is constantly on the search for #FoodPorn, we were so thrilled to see you were on the visual hunt as well with the new show. Instagram has become ground zero and with accounts like @ ChefsOfInstagram showcasing an array of truly unique culinary talent, there is no shortage of food porn. What has been the most sensual/ gorgeous dish you’ve come across, and, did it live up to the hype? This is a hard question as I have eaten so much over the years based on visuals through social media. When it comes to food, I prefer simple and delicious over fancy and complex in terms of flavor profiles. The burnt ends at Salt Lick BBQ, just outside of Austin, Texas blew my mind. The photos of the “Grub” were mouth watering and when I was able to taste if myself, it was like heaven on earth. The term “Food Porn” incites a level of sensuality in cuisine. What’s the sexiest thing you’ve ever made? I am still trying to wrap my head around sexy food but I would say a perfectly cooked, thick cut ribeye, sliced on a bias, with delicately prepared wild mushrooms and a simple pan sauce always closes the deal (wink, wink). Are there a handful of ingredients (or one) you believe make a dish “Food Porn” worthy? Melted cheese or a runny egg is always a way to beef up a dish for that money shot.

How did you join forces with FYI? I was approached by Lauren Deen, the CoAuthor of, “The Meatball Shop Cookbook.” She told me the concept of “FOOD PORN” and asked if I’d be interested in shooting a pilot. I thought it was an awesome idea and was totally game. That’s when I found out that she and Loud Media were already in talks with FYI for the show. I was super excited when I found out that the show was for FYI because: (1) I love A&E and Discovery; and (2) It was a new network and would give me an opportunity to shine a little brighter than at Food Network or Cooking Channel where there is already so much food talent. What is something readers should know about “Food Porn”? “Food Porn” is a show that will take you on today’s journey in the food world. We are discovering places around the country based on your favorites, not ours. Yours. This is what separates ‘Food Porn’ from the rest of the Food Shows on TV today. It’s the people’s vote so remember to hashtag #FoodPorn whenever you eat something that blows you away - as this will help us find the hidden treasures sprinkled all over the country. The show has taken social media and food, which happens to be a pasttime for everybody with close to 79 million #foodporn hashtags on Instagram alone, to the next level.

27

We are doing something relevant, something fun and something that almost everyone wants to be a part of. You can catch Season 1 of “Food Porn” on the FYI Network. (www.fyi.tv/shows/food-porn) You can also dine at The Meatball Shop + Seamore’s in NYC. Michael Chernow|Instagram @michaelchernow #foodporn

With her pregnancy at the forefront of our conversation, we decided to dive right in. First off, congratulations on everything! It’s been an exciting year for you! Traveling the world, getting engaged to Corey, and a baby bump, what was it like when you guys first found out you were pregnant? Thank you! There has definitely been a lot happening! When we I told Corey I was pregnant he was so excited! At first I was obviously excited but I was also a little nervous. Corey, on the other hand, was ecstatic! When his excitement about finding out he was going to be a dad took hold, that’s when we just embraced the new adventures about to unfold and It’s been that way ever since.

My sister-in-law is also pregnant so I feel like we get to go through it together. Experiencing it with another couple, that’s a huge help and great support system! It’s like she and I get to share all of the things happening (and so much happens in the beginning!) while the guys get to share their own stuff. It’s been really cool. Do you still keep in touch with any of the girls from The Hills and have they reached out to you about the new baby? I do still keep in touch with Kristin. She was actually one of the first people I told! The day we found out was the day she had just given birth so she started sending me pictures from the hospital. It was

You have such great style. What are some of your favorite styles now that you get to show off your baby bump? Dresses and Boho tops! My style is a combination of boho and edgy rocker – those are looks I love and thankfully, now that I’m past that awkward pregnant stage where you don’t quite look pregnant, you just look like you ate too much, I’m having fun dressing the bump! It’s crazy how much your body changes – and how fast – and I’m embracing my pregnancy boobs and my curves! I wear a lot of dresses and so far I have been able to wear brands I love because they have some stretch in them. My pants by Frankie B still fit but that may be the only pair I own that still fit over my hips! I really like Tiffany Rose, Love & Lemon, Free People, and Vanilla Sky too.

“At first I was obviously excited but I was also a little nervous.” really special. I also got a text from Heidi congratulating me and sometimes we see Brody and his new girlfriend but really, I talk to Kristin mostly.

of work. I have to set aside a specific day to do it so I can really enjoy writing a piece. I love writing about fashion, health, and exercise. I do have a lot of stuff to share so far and it’s been amazing because so many of my fans are pregnant too so I feel like there is a lot of support out there. Plus I get to read some of their stories and share some of mine. Your body changes so much throughout pregnancy, Not just your shape! My skin has changed and I can’t use the same products I could before I was pregnant so that’s been a challenge. Trying to find chemical free and organic products is tough! It’s weird stuff like sunspots. I never had those before but when we were in Australia I realized I really needed to keep applying sunscreen and be conscious of how much time I spent in the sun. I’ve been thinking about doing videos on products I’ve been trying. We’ll see. One thing I definitely want to write about is how to say active during pregnancy. I’m an active person and pregnancy has definitely slowed me down. On the one hand it’s nice because I have a great excuse to pause a little, but I’m used to being pulled in a million directions – always go, go, go – so I finally get to say “no” and actually just slow down. I’m still getting used to that. I do stay active though. I walk a lot and do pre-natal Pilates and eventually I’m going to try prenatal yoga. It’s totally different than regular Pilates and yoga because you can’t be on your stomach but you still work your body and it really helps my lower back and legs. It’s important to stay active and eat healthy because it makes getting back in shape after baby so much easier. Your life doesn’t stop because you’re pregnant, you know? I’m all about eating smart and being conscious of what I put in my body because inevitably, whatever I do affects the baby. Including stress! Sometimes I just have to disconnect. My phone will be blowing up with texts, there are emails to read, people who need answers and rather than let myself get too stressed, I force myself to take a breath and just disconnect for a few. It helps a lot and honestly, I’ve learned to listen to my body and do what’s best for me.

I’m convinced mommy brain is God’s gift to keep you from being stressed out!

Do you ever just stop and look at your life and think, “I hit the lotto! The man, a baby and planning a wedding?” There is so much happening, all of which is amazing! Corey and I have known each other for so long, probably about 8 years. We are so comfortable with each other! There are no secrets between us, we don’t really hold back. If something is bothering us we talk, no blurred lines. We’ve been through a lot and it’s always more rewarding to restore our relationship than run from it. As far as planning the wedding, I finally brought on a wedding planner. There are so many things to think about so I’m just happy I have her to help!! I’ve seen how stressful it can be and I’m definitely not a Bridezilla. We decided on a destination wedding. We just want it to be fun and simple and easy for both of our families to be at. Honestly, we just can’t wait to meet our baby. Especially now that we can feel the baby move! It’s so cute because Corey fell asleep with his hand on my belly and the baby moved and woke him up! It’s surreal! We are really happy. We are starting a new chapter in our lives and we’re both so ready for it. We’re ready for what’s ahead. You can check out Audrina’s blog, “the Inside Out” at: audrinapatridge.com and stay tuned because she has two new projects coming and she’ll be making the announcements very soon!

Fashion Meets Function in the Most Revolutionary Room in Your Home

Photography by Emily Followill, “Quintessential Kitchens”

The recipient of numerous national design awards, Matthew Quinn is an expert on luxury kitchens, baths, and architectural hardware. In addition to placing first in the National SubZero/ Wolf Kitchen Design Competition, he has also been published in Architectural Digest, Veranda, Traditional Home and Elle Decor, and serves on multiple design boards for high-end kitchen and bath product manufacturers. Matthew infuses fashion and travel into his designs, creating a unique aesthetic that’s clearly working. His new book, Quintessential Kitchens provides perfect design tips for those looking for luxe inspiration in new spaces to those wanting to update and add value to their existing home. We talked to Matthew about how he works on creating the most important rooms in the American household. One of the biggest shifts in the design world is how the kitchen has evolved to the center piece of a house. Why is the kitchen so important now? The kitchen is the hub and heart of the home. It is the conference room, cafeteria, science lab, guidance counselor’s office, stage and party room. When we are not sleeping or bathing, this is where we congregate, communicate and create nourishment. It must function effortlessly and efficiently as well as be safe and sustainable. It is the most complicated room to design as it must serve many purposes and technology and material choices continually change.

You are very much about merging fashion in with your design, how do you achieve that? Fashion and travel are what inspires my choices of color, texture, pattern, metal and mood. I make it a point to study my client’s closet even if I am only designing their kitchen. This gives me a peak into their life regarding their level of formality, color comfort, sense of adventure and aptitude to structure. Trim details, organic elements, metal accents, textural elements and color can all be incorporated into the kitchen design. How do you work with your customers to realize their goals and stay true to your work? Kitchen design is half science and half art. My goal is to save my clients at least ten minutes day with a better organized space, saving sixty hours a year. Who doesn’t want that time back each year? My job is to present a design which is partly what was expected, balanced with what they did not know they needed or thought was possible. How do you achieve a look that is on trend while not dating a house? This is the most difficult part of kitchen design. Referencing the architecture and vernacular of the home is essential but classic color and material choices are really the key to “timelessness”. If the house is not in the mountains or desert, then white cabinets with white countertops is really the

only proven track record. I like to panel all my appliances even going so far as to install ovens behind retractable doors as the appliances are typically the first indicator of the age of a kitchen. Trendy backsplashes, lighting fixtures, faucets and decorative hardware can be changed over time without a complete overhaul. What are the emerging trends in the kitchen and bath world? Even though white and white marble will still dominate the color and countertop category, grays and blues and quartz countertops are finding their own voice. The kitchen will continue to grow in size and incorporate even more seating and task centers and will continue to become smarter and more integrated. Remote meal preparation, digital grocery inventory, complete appliance integration and streaming and instant customer support will be commonplace. Cabinets and backsplashes will become like large televisions with the ability to be changed to any finish, color and style. Backsplash outlets and electrical cords will be eliminated with the use of wireless electricity. There are so many manufacturers constantly working to bring innovation, convenience and beauty into the kitchen that helps keep my job so interesting. Tell me about your new book, Quintessential Kitchens. This book showcases fifteen incredibly unique kitchen projects. These projects are diverse in their geography, clients’ needs, aesthetics and budgets. I am not a formulaic designer and would not want someone to recognize my kitchen designs because they all look the same. I do think that these projects have been designed with edited eyes and represent a clean elegance and simple sophistication. If that becomes my “formula,” I will gladly own it.

clothes. Whether it be directly to buyers, or now directly to consumers, you have to move merchandise to stay in business. With technology making viewing collections at Fashion Week an easy experience for consumers, why not show the collection that will be in stores and readily available?

From interviewing A-listers such as Brad Pitt, Oprah, Eli Manning and Anna Wintour for E! News, to covering the White House Correspondents’ Dinner for MSNBC, to bringing updates to the Today Show, Alicia Quarles is the girl you want advice from. Lapalme Online’s column “Ask Alicia” dives deeper in print this season, with Alicia talking to us about being a woman in the fashion industry, her thoughts on the industry’s recent changes and how to nail a red carpet moment.

Photography by @alicialquarles

How tough is it being a woman in fashion? Do you find it female dominated or fairly balanced? It is difficult to be a woman in fashion. I am close to many female designers who have all kinds of stories about staying the course and not letting anything hold them back, including gender. I do think men have a slight advantage in this industry. Most of the boardrooms are filled with men. That needs to change. Women have to be represented in decision-making roles in order to level the playing field. How does the Fashion Industry compare to the Entertainment Industry? The fashion and entertainment industries have symbiotic relationships. The celebrities bring those high-end fashion looks to the masses. On the flip side, stars want to wear creative, chic and beautiful

How do you prep for the red carpet? I do fittings about a week before any major red carpet. I always have a backup look just in case. I’ll cut down on carbs, get my sleep in and, most importantly, try to be in the moment and enjoy being on that carpet.

designs. I think it’s much more difficult to “make it” in the fashion world. Both industries are brutal though. What do you think about brands, like Tom Ford, starting to move their Fashion Weeks to coincide with their collection hitting the stores, rather than the traditional timing? I think this is spot on. The end goal is to sell

49

What are some of your posing tips for taking a flawless red carpet pic? Be happy! If you feel worried, uptight or upset, it is going to show. The camera tells no lies. Also, know your angles. This means posing on your best side (if you have one) and making sure your contouring is on point. Also, never be afraid to practice before you hit that red carpet. Have friends snap pictures of you in various poses so that you will know which one works best before you step out for your big moment. In the ever popular world of makeup and beauty, Jeffree Star has commanded the attention and respect of the industry. Not afraid to tell it like it is, his unique look is often as fierce as his outlook. With an ever growing makeup line and increasing legions of followers, Jeffree sat down with LAPALME to shed some insight into his glam-world. Whether we are wearing his latest liquid lip color or watching him serve beauty tips on Youtube, we can’t get enough.

Some people may know you as a popular singer and songwriter first. What interested you first, was it makeup, music or both? It was actually just makeup. I had never dreamed that I would do music. Growing up I was pretty gravitated to beauty, vanity and makeup. I started stealing my mother’s eye-shadows and wearing them. She even tried to get me into commercials as a child, but I was shy. Makeup was a creative way to escape and create an interesting life. When I got older, makeup allowed me to put on a different look - almost like my armor. Music never was on my mind until I started going to a lot of shows. I was always using art to escape - - it’s always been makeup, even while being in music. So when I made songs, we had them up on the Internet and there were millions of plays. It took off – I had never really planned to tour the world, travel, make albums and music videos. People really seemed into the music. This all really just happened and I kind of put makeup on the side. Meaning I wasn’t working doing makeup jobs anymore, I was just doing it on myself. I missed the art of makeup and creating new looks. Somehow, I gained this audience that has changed through the years and now my following seems bigger than ever. I’m really grateful.

FLAWLESS AND FIERCE

Tell us about your segue into creating your beauty line, Jeffree Star Cosmetics? I always wanted to have a makeup line while I was doing music. I think it’s all timing. People don’t realize all that goes into a creating your own line – money, packaging, having the right formula. When my music career wasn’t going where I wanted it to go due to a few circumstances, I decided it was time to do a makeup line – all or nothing. I wanted to start really small and have people grow with me. When I went into makeup I received so much love. So I decided to start with three signature items and just work on crafting my formula and really perfect it. I wanted to show people that it’s not just some product made elsewhere, but that it was all amazing LA formulated makeup and worked on for months. At the time I launched my liquid to matte lipsticks, there was something lacking in the market – some were too dry, too streaky or clumpy and I wanted to make something that truly stood out and that was comfortable to wear. I decided to take the chance.

Beauty guru, pop-star, and Youtube sensation, Jeffree Star on his brand, tips and outlook.

We’re seeing an ever increasing lean to vegan cosmetics. Why do you think that is? People are more educated and there’s a lot more information that’s accessible. I think the vegan thing has come up because many people have realized that testing on animals is just archaic. Also, even if it isn’t tested on animals, you don’t need to be wearing bugs on your face

FLAWLESS AND FIERCE

SPRING

– a lot of brands have an ingredient which is derived from ground-up beetles. So if you have the option, why not choose vegan beauty? I am not a vegan, but my makeup line is – using bugs and whale fat is silly. Men giving women makeup advice is en vogue. What’s your take on this trend of men putting on makeup and connecting with women? Attention to makeup in general is getting more massive. I think part of it is that a guy changing their look to be more feminine is a lot more work than simply putting on foundation. Society is also growing more open-minded. That said, I think we sort of live in a bubble, since in New York, Miami or LA this sort of thing is no issue, whereas in a place like Montana, it might be different. Regardless of where you are and its social acceptance, the ability to access information is still something that can be done anywhere – which is also a big part of the growth of this area. Let’s talk about your liquid lipstick Androgyny. How did its creation come about? I’m really in tune to my customers. I want the customer to feel really close to me. I do all my marketing and social media – I’m very hands on. So when I asked what color people wanted to do next, there was an overwhelming response for mauve and browns – but at the same time I wanted to do something that was a little different. When I made the color and wore it in a picture, it received a great deal of feedback. At that point, I had already ordered the inventory, but it was nowhere near enough because it sold out in one night over a few hours. The problem with makeup is it takes a long time to produce, so I couldn’t just go and order more and expect it immediately. The issue we’ve been running into is balancing inventory to meet demand. Even though I have a brand now, I’m still a consumer, right. I work hard on everything and people trust me and that’s how I want it. That relationship is valuable. It means something to me, that people come for beauty advice.

You have a signature look – very fashion forward – what are your top five beauty and fashion items? I’m obsessed with handbags and wild sneakers. With my look, I started trying to create a softer look to combine with some big lashes. It doesn’t matter what kind of lashes, it could even be something from the dollar store. Really dramatic eyes and a bold lip is part of my look. Even though I’m currently creating my own products and highlighters, I love a metallic glow in my cheeks and I’ve been using Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop. I am obsessed with adding a glow. For brows Anastasia of Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, she revolutionized that formula. I’m actually wearing it right now. I’ll also wear contact lenses to add a different aspect to match what I’m wearing. With spring and summer coming, are there any collaborations which you can share with the readers regarding either your new line or upcoming trends you see for the spring and summer? In April, I’m going to release three liquid lips that are very neutral which will be sold individually and as a three pack. In keeping with liquid lips, we’re doing five colors this summer – so summer is going to have a whole new color which no one has seen yet. Finally, in early April we’re rolling out a new product line Skin Frost which are my highlighters that have their own unique name. Then in May we’re rolling out eye-shadow palettes called Beauty Killer. You’re a successful businessperson and a real inspiration to people who want to have a successful business – what are some of your keys to success that you want to share with our readers which may inspire or help them? I think – while it’s such a simple thing to say – it’s important to stay true to your goals and vision. It’s really hard to find someone who does this, not only in the fashion and beauty industry, but any industry. Trying to please everyone else sometimes results in a person forgetting the reason why they’re doing what they’re doing. I didn’t create makeup to get rich. I did it because I was obsessed with art and makeup and wanted to make something different in the world. Staying true to your goals and vision is very important. Staying grounded is very important too and never give up.

High fashion never looked so good … on a canvas!

Youthful excitement and a love for all things posh and stylistic is what makes Gill Button’s work so unmistakable. This London based Artist has brands like British Airways, Gucci and Vanity Fair eager to commission her for a variety of projects and honestly, it’s no wonder. Her paintings and sketches have an uncanny ability to draw you in. With fluidity of movement, glimpses into the subject’s inner workings, bright intentional colors amidst a stark contrast of beauty and mystery, her work is something to crave. With a deep curiosity to find out just what inspires her, LAPALME put together an arsenal of questions we were eager to know the answers to. When we look at your oil collection on buttonfruit.com, there is an uncanny look of conviction in each subject’s eyes. Did you intend for the eyes to be the most prominent part of each piece? And if so, why? I always start with the eyes. If I’m not happy with how they are looking, there is no point for me carrying on – I’ll wipe the canvas and start again. But yes, I do like my subjects to have a relationship - firstly with me - and then with other people. Eyes are a huge part of how we communicate with each other, aren’t they?! So most of my characters are looking right at us, demanding we engage! When you first took the bold move to illustrate, was there someone or something in particular that inspired you? I was so young when I decided to go to Art College that it was probably a naïve rather than a bold move! But a few years ago I decided to start from scratch all over again, and with a mortgage and two cats to feed, that felt like a bold move. I was working for years as an illustrator, largely digitally and in a way that I ended up really not enjoying. I had been lucky enough to work for some amazing clients, but I needed to paint with real paint, real brushes

GILL BUTTON, FASHION + ART

again. The first thing I did was start a daily blog. I called it Sketchy Men and posted a new drawing or painting of a man every day. I then joined Instagram which encouraged me to keep creating and has really become the lifeline of my painting. Fashion and Art have always been synonymous though they don’t always get visibly paired. What element of fashion is most endearing to you as an artist? There is such creativity and I’m drawn to so many elements of fashion, but what I really love is the effect fashion has on people. When I paint a portrait of a woman, I like to portray her attitude, her confidence. I hope to also portray a glimmer of her vulnerability, but that this is overcome by a strength she feels due to her styling. She has gained a power by her use of fashion and is ready to confront the world. What is one of your biggest obstacles when painting? Light. Especially during the winter months when it gets dark so early here in the UK. I manage with artificial lighting, but the hours of good natural daylight are precious. What is your guilty pleasure? I’ve recently started to paint from my studio at home and so the temptations are everywhere. I try not to keep chocolate in the house, but I will occasionally sneak off to a local café for a pot of tea and a giant slab of chocolate cake! How did you get into the fashion world? What was the first piece you were commissioned to do? My very first commission was for Tatler Magazine after my degree show. That said, my more recent following within the fashion world has largely been driven through private portrait commissions by various people within the industry who stumble across my work. Thankfully, one thing has then led to another. Do you remember the first piece of art you saw as a child that really awakened you? I remember the first time I went to The Tate Gallery in London, I think I must have been about nine or ten years old. I saw “The Snail,” by Matisse, and was totally mesmerized. The power of such seemingly simple shapes and colours, I was intrigued and in love. What fashion icon most emulates how you see the world? I recently watched the documentary about Iris Apfel, by Albert Maysles. My personal style is nowhere near as colorful or flamboyant, but I love her approach towards what she chooses to buy. Whether haute couture or a dollar bangle, if she likes it she’ll wear it. I love and adhere to this attitude. I can remember somebody gushing over how much they loved a necklace I was wearing, but the moment I mentioned that I bought it from a cheap High Street store they turned their nose up and walked away. There is a beautiful fluidity in your work; a willingness to show the beautiful chaos that exists in flaws. Do you see yourself in that? Yes I’d say so, and I’m always attracted to that in others. I would much rather somebody is honest and ask if they’re not sure about something and risk looking stupid than blag perfection. Perfection isn’t very interesting, and very unhuman. Every artist has a story. Where did you grow up? Were you encouraged to be creative? Yes, I never wanted to be or do anything else, and I certainly never had any pressure to become a doctor or accountant! My Mum is extremely creative, but as many people of her generation, she never had the opportunity to go to college, even though her teacher desperately wanted her to study textiles. As I was growing up, she would make all our clothes, my sister and I often in matching outfits! It’s only when I look back now that I realize how much of a creative environment this actually was. From picking out the fabrics together, looking through all the pattern books and deciding on styles. But I always drew incessantly, as most children perhaps do. I just never stopped! I grew up in the south east of England, about an hours train ride from London so as a teenager would often take day trips with my friends to see exhibitions or hang out in clothes and record shops. If you do any other job in the world, what would you choose? Six years ago I bought a complete wreck of a house and have been slowly renovating it. I think this would be a tremendously satisfying thing to do full time. Either that or sell ice cream by the beach. Do you ever look at a piece shortly after you’ve created it and think, “Where did this come from?” or do you plan out your pieces beforehand? With my ink wash pieces all the time! The battle between the ink, the water, time and me leads to quite unpredictable results, and sometimes I’ll look at the outcome and think it’s a disaster – but after I’ve had time to reflect, some of these “disasters” become my favorite pieces. Oil paint is a bit more predictable. I always have a plan to an extent, but to be honest I never know how the final piece will really look like until it is finished. I don’t look at a previous piece of work and plan to create something similar - each piece has to be seen as a new discovery, otherwise the work would feel watered down. What is the most interesting decoration you have in your work space? I collect pebbles from when I visit the beach. I love it when I find ones with holes all the way through. I keep some of these on a string in my studio to remind me of the sea which is my favorite place to be. How did the collaboration with GUCCI come about? This was completely due to Instagram! Their head of web Yigit Turhan had discovered my page and showed it to Gucci’s phenomenal creative director, Alessandro Michele. The brief was to reinterpret their new Blooms and Caleido patterns, creating images to help launch and promote the new range. The words Larissa Pham uses to describe your work are apropos: “confrontational and cool, intimate and vulnerable.” It’s undeniable that your pieces evoke emotion that makes you both endeared and uncertain. Not to over analyze, but do you think that’s what makes your work so approachable? The ability to humanize us all rather than over-perfect? I don’t think I deliberately attempt to portray people as imperfect. But through the process of painting a portrait, I do

begin to feel like I know my subject, it’s quite an intense process of just me and my subject, even if I have never met them. So even the most beautiful model becomes much more to me than a perfect face with perfect hair and make up to me. Maybe it’s just projection, I really don’t know. Do you have a morning ritual? I’m slow in the morning, which is unfortunate considering I should be up and painting as soon as daylight breaks! It tends to be coffee, check emails, coffee, check Instagram, coffee, right now stop dithering around and get to it! Lastly, we wanted to ask her a few personal questions. The questions? What book would she read over and over, what makes her laugh, and where she would love to travel. Her answers are the perfect way to end our interview. Here’s what she said: Book: “Wayward Girls and Wicked Women.” I’ve had that book for years and I’ve read it over and over and can’t imagine ever tiring of it! It’s an anthology of stories (is this cheating?). It is full of fantastical, mischievous tales of the most flamboyant female characters. My favorite short story in the collection is “The Debutante,” by Leonora Carrington. It’s a surreal story about a girl who befriends a hyena at the zoo; the hyena offers to dress up in the girl’s gown and go to the ball in her place, with disastrous results! What Makes Her Laugh: I have two cats; I could just sit and watch them for hours. They have a little feathered toy bird on the end of a string and when it’s waved about they just go wild for it, hilarious. Where she’d love to travel to: I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, especially during the springtime when all the blossoms are out. And that is Gill Button -- wonderful and lovely with an infinite world waiting at her feet. Whether it’s a whimsical look at fashion or indulging in fantastical fiction or feeling a bit gluttonous enjoying a piece of chocolate cake, she is as real and authentic as they come. Her creativity is beautifully transcending. (And, quite exciting!) To see the latest projects and own a piece of her art yourself, visit: www.buttonfruit.com | INSTAGRAM @buttonfruit

SLEEK STRIPES VS BOLD SOLIDS

SPRING

SLEEK STRIPES VS BOLD SOLIDS Which side do you favor? Solids that speak to you, or stripes that stay in their lane? Some say that stripes keep things in order, while solids can interchange freely and somehow manage to follow “the rules.” While, these looks make solid statements as one, mixed and matched can also say something fun and different. Slide a sea foam silk tank on over the black and white sequin skirt, with the neutral striped angel platform, for an elevated office look. Pop on the yellow flared culottes with the Darwin striped top and the saffiano striped pumps and hello fun fabulous yacht party! No need to pick sides, have fun. Your style is your own, you make it fabulous!
