TOKYO 2020: UMI NO MORI OLYMPIC COMPLEX site_ sea forest park, tokyo, japan I year_ 2019 I critic_ nanako umemoto

With huge potency to drive urban generation, the Olympics is nevertheless shadowed by its hangovers - the afterlife of a short-term event with far-reaching consequences for the city. New infrastructure, largescale athletic venues, and public facilities confronted sudden drain of economics and cultural values. The project speculates on an Olympic Games on a landfill in Tokyo Bay, and design the venues as a retrospective consequence of its post-Olympic prospect. The project evolves in a reverse chronology fashion, where the design was worked backwards from its long-term proposal of an agricultural farm and park complex towards the design for the Olympic Games. The synthesis of the two states - Olympic venues and agricultural park - aims to formulate a plausible scenario for the transformation of the site over time. Inspired by the interlocking system of traditional Japanese joinery, the site constructs itself through various block units - each representing a type of agriculture typology. Each block units are connected through either its surfaces circulation or its connection voids that each block inherit from its configuration.

Agriculture The site constructs itself through various block units - each representing a type of agriculture types; namely cabbage, daikon radish, plum, and persimmon. The agriculture products proposed are designed to maximize the farming time on the site. By diverging the sowing, flowering, and harvesting time of each farm, the site provides a year-round farming space for the city. In addition, having farms in different seasons gives the site an unique expression throughout the year. In other words, the island would always be lively and active regardless of the time of the year. The diverged work schedule reliefs the traffic during harvesting time.

Olympic Venues The Olympic venues, being a host for public activities and gatherings, are naturally gravitated around and intergrated with the park areas in the isalnd. Each venue meshes itself with the site based on the required environment condition that each venue holds. The six condistions of venues each provides an unique engagment with the site, the ocean, and farm activities. The consolidation of the complexity of the landscape, the circulation network, the farm activities, and the olympic venue conditions results in an unique experience not only as one enters the complex, but also between venues and farmlands within the complex.

HYBRIDIZED ESTATE: CO-LIVING CO WORKING RESIDENTIAL site_ 415 fulton st, brooklyn ny I year_ 2018 I critic_ kutan ayata

The project speculates the contemporary aspect of architectural urbanity and density, specifically the interrelationship between working environment and living spaces. Incorporating three different conditions, offices, micro living and standard apartment units, the project breaks the conventional method of dividing by levels, and mixed the three conditions organically. With the form generated from the placement of different units, each space was not only able to have more natural light exposure, but also some balconies or other forms of outdoor spaces for the quality of both living and working in the space. Situated in a dense urban context with incredible amount of foot traffic, the project created a sunken plaza at it foot giving the neighborhood a place to gather, pass through as well as spaces for businesses and shops. In addition to the blending pubic and private relationship above, the sunken plaza and its pedestrians adds another dimension of ambiguity to the conventional understanding of a residential project.

BROOKLYN WASTE TREATMENT PLANT site_ 12 gold st, brooklyn ny I year_ 2019 I critic_ stephanie bayard I collaboration_ruoting qiu

The project explores the posiibility of combining two contradicting aspects of city life under one roof. With the majority of new york city’s waste barged to neighboring states to be processed, the project proposes a design to make the city’s waste treatment process more accessable and environmentally friendly. The project brings together a incinerator plant, a recycling center and public pools. The project breaks down the stages of recycling and incinerating into individual components, redesign the process from sorting to burning to reveal and appreciate the complex waste treatment process. The paths and movements of recyclable and non-recyclable waste and the public, begins to converge and diverge as one move around spaces. In addition, the incinerating process provides the necessary energe for the spaces and program.

MALECON BELT ELEVEN MAGAZINE COMPETITION site_ malecon, havana cuba I year_ 2018 I collaboration_ hsiengting huang, ruoting qiu, haoyuan wang

The Malecon Belt is a reimagined protective system along the Malecon that provides additional and alternative ways to engage the strip and the city. The proposed system improves the existing sea wall, providing a better shield for floods and storm waves, while responding to different demands of public spaces and activities. The Belt offers multilevel engagements with the sea and the city, public plazas, and connections to the inner city. With pathways designed above and below street level, tourists have the opportunity to see and experience the Malecon from different perspectives while offering new uses for the residents. The Malecon Belt aims to not only revive the adjacent buildings but also infiltrate this new experience into the city. Being a heavily used highway with high foot traffic, it is often unsafe and difficult to cross from one side to another. Bridge connections are, therefore, constructed throughout The Belt providing a safe and easy transition into the city.

MIXED MESSAGE year_ 2020 I critic_ thomas leeser

The project aims to investigate architecture not primarily as form making, but to create experiences that allow for a rethinking and critical engagement. The design challenges viewer’s perception of depth and perspective through form manipulation and texture mapping. The project uses a 2D image with 3D illusion to create a three-dimensional architectural construct with two-dimensional quality. In result, creating an architectural constructs that is not static, but morphs and shifts into other forms of representation, into objects of contradiction, of impossibilities or inversions. In addition to the contradiction within the construct, the building also extend its confusion into the cityscape it is situated in, where the form and pattern extends itself into the surrounding buildings. The extension not only add an additional layer of confusion, but also bring the different facade patterns of the city into one visual system. 0x Pixelation

ROCK CLIMBING PARK site_ sara d. roosevelt park, manhattan ny I year_ 2017 I critic_ jason vigneri-beane

Generated from the coexistence of curved and straight surfaces of a respirator mask and a grid interference, the project investigates the different spatial condition and possibility that can be uncovered from the form. The high-resolution solid rock climbing space and the low-resolution structure skin created an interior resting space and a semi-enclosed climbing zone that allow variety of level of rock climbing and areas to explore. This exploration begins at the entrance of the park, through channels with limited sight before they reach the climbing facility, one would uncover different spaces and programs along the way. The channels are extensions of the project’s geometry, creating views of specific edges of the building while providing another layer of climbing opportunity. The landscape allows one to climb, sit, lay, and relax at different levels and areas allowing different interaction with the building physically and visually. At night, with the light from the building filter through the translucent structural skin, the building become a gem hidden in the park for people to uncover.

INTEGRAL EXPERIENCE: FLUID LEARNING SPACES site_ 248 pearl st, manhattan ny I year_ 2017 I critic_ dylan baker-rice

Design to address interior related conceptual and material impacts, the project aims to create a space that promotes a fluid learning process. Fluid learning allow students to be engage in learning both in and out of the classroom through mobile and nonmobile devices. To reflect this flexibility in the design, the nature of spheres and curved surfaces, spaces can be visually and acoustically connected in multiple directions. The accumulation of curved-surface-boxes force spaces to overlap and collide into each other, creating a shared area of mixed program. These moments become spaces where students can explore, try and learn topics of their interests, while bring students of different grades together. The curved surface, then, acts as an incubator of interests and knowledge beyond textbooks and classrooms.

NANOTECTONICA: MICROFIBRIL STRUCTURE year_ 2020 I critic_ jonas coersmeier

Collagen fibre structure is a supramolecular structure in the three-dimensional network of extracellular macromolecules. Depending upon the degree of mineralization, the triple helix structured collagen tissues will have different degrees of rigidity and function in the human body. The different stages in the formation of collagen tissue fibres, from molecule to microfibres to fibrils, creates a complex system and relationship between each levels of formation, where each level built off its previous level. The project utilizes the logic of the helix structure to create a system that flux between the different layers and stages of the collagen tissue formation.

NANOTECTONICA: MICROFIBRIL STRUCTURE year_ 2020 I critic_ jonas coersmeier

Through rigorous study of multilevel collagen fibre structure formation from microscopically visible level to its molecular level, a penta-helix structure system was developed to create a primary framework and connections system. The principle logic of the system derives itself from the self-repeating building principle of collagen, where every level of formation is built upon its previous level. Through testing various transformation operations from free form model making to meticulous algorithmic calculations, the project evolves into a system that inherits multiple transformation logic and operation. The fusion of multiple transformation structures give the project a multilevel algorithmic control over its development and growth, each with its unique complexity in its expression, while remaining adherent to the fundamental penta-helix principle.

The project aims to create a small office space that reflects the company’s goal to be flexible, creative, and unconventional, while maintaining some aspects of the company’s field of work - construction. To achieve such images, the design looks to use typical construction materials, such as re-bars and concrete blocks, to create a multi-functional partition system that exists throughout the space. In addition to creating a new system through conventional materials, the system respects existing interior details; and consciously incorporating the existing ceiling grids into the partition system. Responsibilities: - Drafted demolition and schematic option plans - Prepared drawings, images diagrams, and layout for presentation - Created schematic design options and renderings for new office designs (Rhino / Photoshop)
