CHAPTER 1
Why does recognition matter? UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS CASE FOR PURPOSEFUL RECOGNITION
“
Often people think of recognition as the kind of fluffy feel good stuff that businesses talk about to make their employees happy. But if used right it does a whole lot more than that. Simply put: if you give people the recognition they’ve earned, if you show genuine appreciation and acknowledge the unique things people have to offer and do, then you will drive significantly better results. At the same time, you will lift the spirits of everyone involved, including yourself, and create a positive energy that becomes contagious.” - DAV I D N OVA K

How do I recognize others effectively?
MAKE RECOGNITION PERSONAL

TOPICS:
Make Recognition Personal Build Recognition Into Your Daily Routine Be Specific When You Recognize Create Your Own Recognition Personality Describe Your Recognition Personality Tailor Your Recognition
Chapter Summary In this chapter, you learned how to make recognition personal. You practiced the three steps to purposeful recognition: 1. Explain why you are recognizing them. Be specific about what they did. 2. Tie the action to one of the essential behaviors you defined. 3. Refer to the tangible results it drives. You also created your unique recognition personality by taking an assessment and learned that recognition needs to be tailored to the person receiving it to be most effective.
8
MY RECOGNITION PERSONALITY This assessment will help you discover how to use your recognition personality in a powerful way. Make sure to review tips for both responses to further refine your recognition personality. Use the checkboxes provided
I AM MOST COMFORTABLE GIVING: Spontaneous Recognition
Planned Recognition
Because you are spontaneous, you are comfortable giving recognition at any time. You can quickly share a meaningful thank you to show your appreciation to others. Start looking for these spontaneous recognition moments and pay attention to the response you get when you recognize others.
Because you are more comfortable planning ahead, schedule time in your calendar each week to create a recognition plan. Decide who you want to recognize. Remember to be creative and be specific about why you are recognizing them. Write your notes about what you want to say, decide when you will recognize them, and then take action.
I AM MORE COMFORTABLE GIVING RECOGNITION: In a Group
One-on-One
Because you are comfortable giving recognition in a group, you can take advantage of existing meetings. You can be a role model for your team or those you work with and help them learn how to recognize others effectively. Be sure to consider the receiver of recognition. If the receiver isn’t comfortable with public recognition, think about how you can recognize them in a one-on-one setting.
If you prefer to give recognition one-on-one, then it’s important to find time to do this. Schedule time with the receiver to give the recognition. While this is most comfortable for you, it’s also important to consider how the receiver likes to be recognized. As you get more comfortable with recognition through practice, you might want to try it in a small group setting because it involves others in the power of recognition.
I AM NATURALLY MORE: Outgoing
Reserved
You are outgoing, so recognition might be easy for you! Use your unique style to make recognition fun for everyone – even those not being recognized. Remember to consider the receiver of recognition. If they are quieter than you, tone it down a bit. You can even ask someone who is quieter to help you plan recognition for those who prefer a simpler approach.
Your simple, sincere approach to recognition makes people feel special. Use your unique style to show your appreciation in a genuine, authentic way. Remember to consider the receiver of recognition. If they are more outgoing than you, you may need to kick it up a notch. Consider asking someone who is more outgoing to help you plan recognition for those who prefer to be recognized in public.
I TEND TO BE MORE: Practical
Creative
Because you are practical, you are quick to discover the behaviors you want to recognize. You’re disciplined about getting it done. There’s lots of practical ways to recognize others like giving gift cards or handwritten notes. If you want to be creative, consider asking someone who you consider to be creative for ideas. And remember to think about the receiver and explain why they are being recognized.
Since you are creative, use your talent to create meaningful recognition moments. Your creativity, combined with your knowledge of what the receiver likes, allows you to design something special for the receiver. There’s no limit to the fun you can have creating unique recognition moments. Don’t forget to tell why they are being recognized while you’re being creative.
