Options for Breast Reconstruction with Implants There are many women in the United States who get tested positive for breast cancer. In some cases, a portion of the breast has to be removed, while in other cases, the doctor might advise to remove the entire breast. This is something which women find it very difficult to deal with. It will be comforting for women to know that various other options are available for them. There are innovative ways of reconstructing the breast so that no one notices the disfigurement that arises from breast cancer. One popular method is breast reconstruction surgery. Many women get breast implants placed immediately after mastectomy. This is the first option that is available. In the procedure of breast reconstruction with implants, a silicone implant would be immediately placed behind the pectoral muscle. A permanent implant may be used as well if there is enough quality skin. However, the size of the implant depends on individual requirements. Within a few months, the condition would heal as per planned and there might be another procedure for adjusting the shape and placement of the new breast. Given below are the options for breast surgery with implants: • Immediate reconstruction This is a procedure that would be performed during the mastectomy. It is noticed that majority of breast surgeries are usually done during the time of mastectomy. However, the choice would depend on various factors: o The size and shape of the breast o Lifestyle o Immediate situation Breast Reconstruction

o Aesthetic goals Not all patients are candidates for immediate reconstruction. Pain and discomfort are minimal with this treatment and patients can leave the hospital the next day itself. Apart from women who have had a mastectomy, those with congenital breast defects and adequate soft tissue are candidates for this type of reconstruction. •
Placement of tissue expander
While performing the breast reconstruction surgery post mastectomy, saline is partially filled in the tissue expander, when it is first positioned. Just within a few weeks of surgery, as the patient starts healing, expansion would start. The process of expansion would take place at the intervals of one, two or three weeks or sometimes even months. The time taken for the expansion may be coordinated with treatments of chemotherapy. The expansions that would be required later would be determined by the amount of fluid that the surgeon places during the initial surgery. Nowadays, higher volume of saline is placed by the plastic surgeon during initial surgery. With this, the expansions that are needed later may be decreased. Once the required stretching has occurred, the tissue expander is removed and a definitive breast implant is placed. This procedure is also apt for women who have insufficient skin or soft tissue coverage to allow reconstruction with implants.
