Royal Caribbean’s new Innovation Lab was designed around a first-ok-its-kind, 3d simulation environment referred to as the Cave. The company’s six-story headquarters at the Port of Miami has set the stage for the next generation of cruise ship design. This 20,000 square foot addition, with its expressive shape, resilient skin and high-tech interior, creates the perfect environment for imagining and designing the vessels of the future. In the Cave, designers use virtual reality to immerse themselves in the vessels they design. Using projection equipment in the ceiling, floor and walls, they are able to create a panoramic digital simulation of new vessels. Wearing special headsets, as many as 10 team members can collaborate on a project at the same time.

The Cave is housed in a three-story volume in the southwest corner of the addition. It is acessed via the second level, while the rest of the floor contains collaborative workspaces, a lounge and a cate area. The first floor is largely unfinished, which provides space for the construction, testing and aesthetics of full-size mockups of a ship’s interior.

The lab’s exterior architecture is a celebration of the innovative design happening within. The curved edge of the building cantilevers over its 270-degree radius and circumscribes the Cave within. The pure white concrete panels on the exterior were sandblasted to produce a delicate appearance, and aluminum tins were added to create a playful rhythm.
PROFESSIONAL | ROYAL CARIBBEAN INNOVATION LAB The concrete skin also allows the lab to blend with the existing precast and concrete corporate headquarters, and it provides the building envelope resilience against the ports’s harsh, saltuy environment.
The 10,000 to 20,000-pound weight of the 20-foot-tall architectural panels required close coordination between the precast manufacturer, the contractor and the architect. The panels were made hollow on the inside to offset the weight of the cantilever and provide stability. Using design-build and lean construction methods, the project was successfully fast-tracked, going from schematic design to occupancy in 10 months. Without this level of collaboration a similar project was projected to take up to two years to complete.

THROUGH THE LENS Architecture is meant to be experienced, and by virtue of human nature, each person will choose how to do that differently. Whether foreseen or not, built environments can lead to a spectrum of experiences that can root us in time and place. In Miami, the contrasting architectural styles of the cityscape adds to the city’s robust cultural scene. The iconic buildings are as diverse of the residents who inhabit them, revealing layers of perspectives and interactions. ‘Through the Lens’ invites you to experience the architectural footprint of Miami through a compilation of the city’s most iconic buildings. Utilizing individual elements to make-up the architectural skyline creates a pulsating experience for the viewer establishing a personal connection to the spaces that encompass that individual and the image. Much a city’s fabric is experienced from a multitude of angles, ‘Through the Lens’ is meant to be viewed in 360 degrees. In this piece, perspective doesn’t just matter, the deconstructive nature of the piece ensures that each viewer’s experience is dependent upon the perspective one has to the piece – shaping and framing the beauty of Miami through individual prisms.
