URBAN INFILL - Space Within Space Location : ABC Street, Bandung, Indonesia Type : Individual Academic Work Mentor : Ir. Budi Faisal, MLA., MAUD. Third Year First Semester Studio Project

This project challenged us to design a multi-function building on a narrow 6 x 15 meters site dimension that is flanked by two buildings. There are two functions for this building: DVD & magazine shop and private house. Since the building was located in a very dense commercial area, it is designed to have more open space within the building as a buffer between buildings for proper air circulation and natural lighting inside. The design also responds the context of the surroundings especially its facade design.

SITE CHARACTERISTIC ABC street is a shopping district in downtown of Bandung City that is known for selling electronic goods. This condition makes this area very busy almost all the time and it affects to the unwell-planned development of this area. That makes the area feels -both visually and physically- disorganized, specially because of the billboard arrangement on the facade area.

3

Concept for this project is to creating a space within a space. Sacrificing a little part of the site for open space is a design solution that is chosen as well as to inject more natural light and air circulation. With this concept, I want to make people forget that they were standing among the dense building around it.

MIXED-USE BUILDING - A New Lively Corridor Location : Merdeka Street, Bandung, Indonesia Type : Individual Academic Work Mentor : Himasari Hanan, Ir., MAE., Dr., Ing. Fourth Year Second Semester Studio Project

The development of Merdeka Street as a commercial district is potentially for addition of public building as a purpose of complementing the functions that already exist. In this project, design of this building is required to respond various issues, such as relationship with surroundings, circulation problems, utilities, and various needs. Since the site is located between two main road, Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan Merdeka, hence connectivity becomes the main issue as a way to accomodate people movement but at the same time improve the quality of space to become a new gathering hub.

Situated in the middle of a “city passage, this project is intended to be a new place that would encourage a new spirit of this area. With a various functions around the site and insertion of several new programs, will help people to improve their productivity and also have an impact to a better community shaping. The presence of some cultural and educational facility surrounds it, make it possible to inject a cultural facility into this project to accomodate the needs of wider range of user, besides only putting a commercial facilities.

9

Concept for this project is urban corridor. This building is expected to be a corridor that is not only used as a crossing space but also a new place to do many activities. The functions accomodated in this building are obtained by site-analyzing and observing target markets around this area. There are several functions adopted from the existing buildings: retails and hotels, but there are also new functions such as rental office and community-scale performance theater.

As the most protruding part of the building, podium level facade should be a main attraction. For the podium which faces Merdeka Street, facade is designed to create a visual scenario. Even though this pattern is not applied on every part of the building, there is similar principle used in overall facade design: strong of vertical pattern as a respond to heritage bulding that is located near to the site which has a geometrical facade element.

BANDUNG CITY AVENUE - Reinvention of Shopping Mall Building Location : P.H.H. Mustafa Street, Bandung, Indonesia Type : Individual Academic Work Undergraduate Final Project

Mentor : Ir. Eko Purwono, M.S. Arch., S.

This lifestyle center is categorized as a shopping center building. Lifestyle that becomes the basic idea for design concept is the habit that has transformed into an identity of urban society nowadays, such as hanging out and shopping. This project consists of many commercial functions, such as retail, entertainment facility, and also supporting and service function. There will be a hotel development that is intergrated into the design, but doesn’t included into the design scope.

16

SITE CHARACTERISTIC

Strategically located at the junction of P.H.H. Mustafa and Cikutra street meets with a very busy and dense urban context, resulting in possibility to create a new public facility which act as an important role to connect existing communities and future urban development. Not only providing a social and gathering place, but this project also fulfiilling everyone needs and potentially become an economic generator for this area. This project has a potential to be an emerging shopping center icon in East Bandung area.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

SHAPE For part of the site that is facing to the dense settlement, building mass is formed responding to the site shape in order to enrich the street scape. Meanwhile, on the part that is facing to the P.H.H. Mustafa street, building mass is designed to welcome people through strategic cuts.

‘Architecture as a shopfront’ is the main concept that is trying to address the issue of functional and image of the building. Afterwards, this concept then applied to several elements design. This concept is expected to aswer the main design issue that is creating an attractive and comfortable atmosphere for shopping with a predominance of open space. As like as a shopfront, interaction between inside and outside acts as a main aspect of design process. Therefore the first design step is dviding building mass into several parts in order to achieve more permeable design. A very busy and dense urban context around the site become a focus in design approach.

VIEW AXIS By separating the program and organizing it on a certain axis, view into and onto the building are opened up in order to show people’s activity inside and attract more people to come.

Building mass separation is intended to create a continous and linear circulation flow, especially on a ground floor. Central plaza is positioned at the intersection between all building mass as an orientation and outdoor activity space that is easy to reach.

18

ZONING Access separation is done along with placing each program on the site to prevent crossover by pedestrians or visitors. Vehicular access for service vehicles is on the west side and has a direct connection to the building, especially for hotel and supermarket. By creating two entrance gates, number of vehicle will be distributed and as an effort to reduce traffic impact to surroundings. Meanwhile, pedestrian acces is welcomed warmly by the central plaza before entering to the building.
