SECRET THEATRE Unexpected moments of theatre, popping up in the strangest places.

MY SECOND SEASON IS A CHANCE TO PUT INTO PRACTICE WHAT I LEARNT IN MY FIRST. SO, WHAT DID I LEARN? WELL … This company has amazing musical performers. Grand Hotel is a blockbuster musical with a bit of everything: passion, crime, laughter, a wonderful score and great dancing. Our audience loves brilliant writing, for young or old. The Magician’s Nephew will bring C.S. Lewis’ legendary world of Narnia to life in a show for all the family. We all love a bit of pure escapism. Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles marks the return of the murder mystery to The Shaw, in a script that bursts with life and intrigue. We are suckers for romance. Stage Kiss is not just a hilarious backstage comedy, it also has a really beautiful heart. It will light up the Royal George. Bernard Shaw still rocks. Both our double-bill of comedies, Of Marriage and Men and our Lunchtime oneact O’Flaherty V.C., show him at his dazzling, mischievous best. The meeting of a classic play with a modern playwright can produce wonderful sparks. In The Orchard (After Chekhov), Sarena Parmar invites Chekhov to tell the story of a Canadian immigrant family in heart-breaking and hilarious fashion. History is alive today. The centenary of the end of the Great War is a perfect opportunity to do two great anti-war plays. Henry V influenced Shaw and this production, set in the trenches, might be the way he would
have staged it; Oh What A Lovely War, the great musical by Joan Littlewood, was influenced by Shaw and will bring the Canadian experience on to the stage of the Royal George, which began life as a vaudeville house to entertain the troops mustering for France. Canada’s theatre history is packed with gems worthy of rediscovery. Michael Mackenzie’s funny and moving The Baroness and the Pig has been played all over Europe, but will be brand new to Shaw audiences. Stephen Fry is even more dazzling in the flesh than he is on screen. I knew that already, because he is my friend. But no one should miss the chance to hear one of the geniuses of the age telling the greatest stories of all time – in his own special way! Oh, and I learnt that we have the best supporters in the world. Come and be part of it. After all, theatre is one of those basic human needs: you can do it on your own, but it’s better in company. Let’s get together.

CANADIAN PREMIERE! By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Adapted by R. Hamilton Wright and David Pichette Directed by Craig Hall
May 3 – October 14 Check into the lavish Grand Hotel, where the lives of ten hotel guests collide over one incredible night. Love. Betrayal. Jealousy. Murder. And the glamour of Berlin in the Roaring Twenties. Soaring with songs and dance, it’s the mesmerizing musical about what happens when our deepest, most desperate passions are unleashed. Winner of five Tony Awards.

FESTIVAL THEATRE
The Magician’s Nephew
August 1 – October 27 It’s the return of the murder mystery to The Shaw. Sir Baskerville has been scared to death — literally. Now deductive genius Sherlock Holmes is on the case to find the murderer ... with twist after twist to keep you guessing. Darkly fun, deliciously sly, and just the right amount of suspense: this is a whodunit you won’t want to miss.
WORLD PREMIERE! Mythos Marathons – See the complete Mythos Trilogy over two days in June or July. Marked MM on the calendar. Three-show package from $135.
The world’s most hilarious storyteller shares the world’s most fascinating myths. In this trilogy of plays (try to see them all!), Stephen Fry takes to The Shaw stage with gripping tales of the Greek gods, heroes, and men who still echo today. Laugh-out-loud funny, mind-blowing, and often personal, Mythos is a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the icon himself. Please note special pricing for Mythos: A Trilogy – Gods. Heroes. Men. ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE Jeff Irving (Me and My Girl, 2017).
4
By Sarah Ruhl Directed by Anita Rochon
April 11 – September 1 Two bitter exes are cast in the same play as each other’s love interest. Will they strangle each other? Or seduce each other? And how can you tell what’s real from what’s make-believe? Frothy and hilarious, this modern romantic comedy by Pulitzer-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl will take you behind the curtain on a whole new level.
Of Marriage and Men: A Comedy Double-Bill How He Lied to Her Husband and The Man of Destiny
O’Flaherty V.C. (Lunchtime one-act)
By Bernard Shaw Directed by Kimberley Rampersad
May 31 – October 6 Young Dennis O’Flaherty has been sent back from the front to recruit more Irishmen to the war. The only problem? He neglected to tell his Irish nationalist mother he’s helping the English. Packed with family feuding and witty repartee, this Bernard Shaw one-act skewers every conceit about why we fight.

Oh What A Lovely War
By Bernard Shaw Directed by Philip Akin
Book by Joan Littlewood, Theatre Workshop and Charles Chilton Directed by Peter Hinton
May 13 – September 2
July 14 – October 13
Bernard Shaw’s two best short plays about marriage in a single show! In How He Lied to Her Husband, find out the limits of what a man will do for the lady he loves — and, ahem, his lady’s husband. In The Man of Destiny, Napoleon must defend his wife’s honour… but can he? This comedy double-bill about the hitches of being hitched crackles with humour and honesty.
This provocative WWI musical is known to make audiences laugh, cry and clench their fists — all within a single act. This fiercely funny, piercing musical will make you see war in a new light. Follow a band of singing, dancing Canadian soldiers into the Great War and rediscover the spirit behind “lest we forget”.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserable old miser. But when three ghosts decide to swoop in overnight, he gets the wake-up call of a lifetime. This charming Christmas classic by Charles Dickens has one of life’s most inspiring questions at its heart: what — and who — will really matter in the end? Fun for everyone (even Scrooges). WORLD PREMIERE!
By Sarena Parmar Directed by Ravi Jain
June 7 – September 1 It’s Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard — transformed into the tale of a Punjabi-Sikh family fighting to hold onto their Okanagan Valley orchard. Based on up-and-coming playwright Sarena Parmar’s own personal history as a fruit farmer, this fresh adaptation confronts life, loss and the Canadian immigrant experience with both bravery and beauty. The Reading Series July 14 and September 30 | 11am Details at shawfest.com
By Michael Mackenzie Directed by Selma Dimitrijevic
June 10 – October 6 An idealistic 19th century baroness has found her next maid — a feral girl who can barely speak, let alone keep house. Now it’s just a matter of socializing her… right? Part Pygmalion, part wildly original buddy comedy, this heartwarming Canadian play cuts to the core of what it means to be “civilized” — and to be human. Production Sponsor

Returning for a second season, Secret Theatre will continue to delight audiences with surprise theatrical experiences throughout the year. Intrigued? We certainly hope so.
Henry V By William Shakespeare Co-directed by Tim Carroll and Kevin Bennett
July 22 – October 28 A troop of Canadian soldiers is hunkered down in a dugout during WWI when they come across copies of Shakespeare’s Henry V. As they enter the battle-torn, dramatic world of the play, the play enters theirs. This imaginative spin on Shakespeare’s play is a powerful exploration of what it means — and costs — to fight for king and country. Production Sponsors

THE VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP …
“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art … It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” – C.S. Lewis Art is a basic human need. On that scale, it comes after survival (air, food, shelter) – but not by much. As soon as we get past ‘how to survive’ and get into ‘why we would want to’, we get to art. Mr Lewis (whose lovely Narnian tale, The Magician’s Nephew, shortly premieres on our stage) adds two other things that make life worth living. Which brings me to Friendship. TC and I are very intent on deepening the relationship between artist and audience; engaging in discussions that will make people more excited and more engaged with each other, with us and with our art. Our work is unashamedly intelligent, but should not be snobbish. We are entertainers and we want The Shaw to be a big party to which everyone is invited. First and foremost among the invitees are our Friends. Many of you jumped on board with our new direction. Some tentatively, some with both feet. You may have challenged us on these ‘new ideas’ and if so, we listened. We might not always agree – really, who always agrees with each other? – but we are excited to be engaged in that two-way conversation with you. We want to learn from you and to be the best theatre experience you have! Maybe not always the easiest – but the best!
A play is only the beginning. We invite you to try an open rehearsal, to engage in robust after-theatre chats, to take classes, attend lectures, meet the company, find out about Secret Theatre, sip a glass of wine in our gardens, talk to each other … We also invite you to deepen your commitment. We cannot do the kind of theatre we are renowned for, nor nurture our remarkable acting Ensemble, without significant support. We are one of the very few remaining ensemble repertory companies left in the world and tickets cover only about half of our expenses. We need Friends to help us raise the rest – to invest in us, both as regular donors and through long term and planned giving by joining the Brian Doherty Legacy Society. We also deeply value the support of our Corporate Partners, Foundation granters and the terrific work of our own Endowment Foundation. Thank you again. Your support makes it possible for The Shaw to thrive, not just survive and we look forward to seeing you soon!
