CHAIR’S REPORT
I noted at last season’s AGM that talking about financial surpluses was a tradition I could really get to enjoy. I was right — but am pre-empting myself! 2018 made large strides on our strategic objectives, increasing connectivity to audiences and communities and increasing the number of tickets sold. Importantly, 28% of all tickets were sold to new patrons! I’m also particularly proud of our dramatic increase in education activities. Over 1500 education events served almost 50,000 people, nearly doubling 2017’s participation. Of particular note is the terrific job the Shaw Guild does in supporting these events! On the artistic side, TC continues to engage us in his explorations of theatre, its role in provoking our discussions, and how its variety can connect with each of us. According to our survey results, for 90% of us, it works really well. The season showcased both the technical wizardry we are known for and the beauty of simple, creative concepts brilliantly executed. Our wonderful production of Magician’s Nephew welcomed over 32,000 young people and families. Grand Hotel, the Mythos Trilogy and Hound of the Baskervilles brought in many of our new patrons. At the Royal George, Stage Kiss and Of Marriage and Men almost sold out their entire runs, while O’Flaherty, VC and Oh What a Lovely War were acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. We reconfigured the Jackie Maxwell Theatre to present our most challenging work with Baroness and the Pig, The Orchard (after Chekhov) and our WWI era drama involving the telling of Henry V. Henry V was a personal favourite and reinforced for me how the framework within which a play is set can dramatically reshape its relevance and power. We again sold out our run of A Christmas Carol, solidifying what has become an instant holiday tradition and generating increased activity for local businesses. These artistic successes come from our remarkable repertory ensemble and the craftspeople, artisans and artsworkers who support them. Thank you all! All of this also resulted in significant financial success; important in ensuring Shaw’s sustainability. We eliminated, with the help of our 2015 Heritage Canada grant, our capital maintenance and improvement deficit, and repaid our outstanding operating loan. Our next challenge is to establish a prudent level of working capital to make us less dependent on bank financing. I want to thank my colleagues on our Board for all of the work, leadership and guidance they have shown. I want to thank our donors, partners and patrons for their exceptional dedication and support, and their ability to adapt to the changes we are putting before them. I particularly want to thank our staff, especially our two Tims, for another amazing year and for ensuring our theatre lives up to its charitable mission to excite, inspire, provoke and delight audiences. Thank you for everything you do to ensure the ongoing success of The Shaw. I am delighted you are on this journey with us! peter jewett
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
I am excited by this season’s results. Hard not to be. Audience attendance was up significantly. More than a thousand new members came on board. Contributed revenues increased again in both quantity and size of gifts. More than 70,000 new buyers found us and, if our excellent early 2019 sales results are any indicator, loved what they saw and want to see more. The company made major strides in its work on inclusion and diversity, including indigenous recognition at all of our entrances and in our show welcomes and saw our first (of what I hope to be many) new play by a South Asian Canadian. Our sell out run in 2017 of A Christmas Carol was repeated in 2018, prompting us to try adding another holiday show in 2019. Our Montreal tour of Master Harold …and the Boys at the top of the year and partnership with Crow’s Theatre’s to remount our 2017 production of Middletown in Toronto in Nov/Dec both made ‘best of the year’ lists in those cities. We almost doubled the number of education and outreach events that we ran. We increased total annual revenues by $1.38 Million over last year. We received $2.6 Million in new gifts and grants to our Endowment Foundation. Perhaps most satisfying to me personally, we finished the work of erasing, installing and paying off the last of the $10 Million in historic operating deficits and deferred capital work that were outstanding when I arrived here in 2015, with many thanks again to Heritage Canada for the $2.77 Million matching grant they gave to us in 2016 to get us started. Oh — and, even after all of that, we posted a surplus of $537K! Average 2018 ticket prices remained almost unchanged from 2017, continuing our intention to ensure affordable family programming, reasonable entry level ticket options and subsidized student pricing. 2019 begins a program that more than doubles the number of our lowest cost ($25– $40) tickets available to the public, as well as rethinking the way in which we fill our houses to ensure the best possible experience for all of our patrons and a new, expanded Season Pass Plus that increases benefits for our most engaged members. 2019 continues to offer another expanded season with 13 productions programmed across three theatres, plus even more workshops, events and secret theatre surprises. I am particularly excited by our Man and Superman marathons and Kate Hennig’s adaptation of Cyrano; it was our famous 1982 production of the play that I credit with starting my own interest in theatre as a career and in the Shaw Festival itself. I am excited to see the theatre in a place of significantly increased stability and in our audience’s clear enthusiasm for TC’s call for a more human, more connected theatre. I want to thank our staff and artists, our board and our Guild for all of their work in helping produce our 2018 season and all of you for helping us generate these terrific results!! See you soon and all my very best, tim jennings

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT
My favourite number this year was 47,391. That is how many people engaged with our education department, and it represents more or less a twofold increase on the year before. It means thousands of young people had a human experience before or after The Magician’s Nephew; it means thousands had the chance to meet us and glimpse what we do; and it gives real meaning to the phrase ‘Two-Way Theatre.’ Those of you who saw the show will recall that the young people in the audience really did contribute to the stage action. Not only did they make the sounds of rain, and put on crowns to portray the frozen Kings and Queens of Charn; they also, before the show, told the cast (in their roles as Dream Detectives) their dreams, and each night some of these were related to the whole audience as the show began. At the other end of the season, in every sense, came Henry V. There, we asked members of the audience to write down stories of their family and war. These were read out by Ric Reid at the top of Act Two. Every time, without fail, the air grew thick as breaths were held and tears blinked back. These are two examples of why I think engagement matters. I am so proud of our education department, not only for having achieved such numbers but for having given every group they dealt with a wonderful experience. And I am proud of the acting ensemble, for being open and brave enough not only to engage with their audience, but for allowing those moments of connection to land and have an effect on the rest of the performance. My ideal theatre is one where each show is different every night. I felt that 2018 was a big step in that direction. Of course, engagement takes many forms. As an audience, we are engaged whenever a play draws us in and gets us breathing together. I was very proud of the way that shows as diverse as The Baroness and the Pig and The Hound of the Baskervilles did that: with very different stories, and using very different theatrical languages, both held their audiences spellbound. The Orchard and Oh What A Lovely War, meanwhile, shed light on important corners of Canadian history, while O’Flaherty, VC and Of Marriage and Men brought Shaw’s energy and mischief roaring onto the stage. And then there were the two biggest sellers, Grand Hotel and Mythos. Each show had a huge cast, but only one had a lot of people on stage. I loved the style and edge of Grand Hotel, and I was proud and humbled to be part of Stephen Fry’s telling of Mythos. Perhaps as important as anything this year was the number of letters I received, and the incredible diversity of opinion contained in them. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that every single show was one person’s favourite and another’s turkey. Luckily, as you will read elsewhere, the overall response to every production was overwhelmingly positive. Nonetheless, those letters are important, both as an encouraging sign that our audience is ready to engage with us, and as a lesson for me to bear in mind as I plan future seasons. What it tells me is this: since the wide range of work that I am passionate about will never make everyone happy, a successful season might be best defined as one that gets everyone talking. We seem to have done that in 2018, and I am pretty sure this year will be no different. tim carroll
The Shaw wishes to acknowledge and honour the land upon which we gather as the historic and traditional territory of First Nations peoples. In particular, we recognize and thank the Neutral Nation, the Mississauga and the Haudenosaunee for their stewardship of these lands over millennia. We also wish to thank all of the First Nations peoples in Canada and the indigenous peoples of the United States for their ongoing and important roles in the caretaking of the lands beneath our feet, wherever we travel on Turtle Island.

PROFESSIONAL AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: THE SLAIGHT FAMILY ACADEMY Now entering its second decade, programs are offered through The Slaight Family Academy, all designed to inform, enrich and deepen The Shaw experience. Professionally, Shaw, through the Academy, provides in-season training for members of the company as well as apprenticeships for young actors, designers, directors, technicians and stage managers. Before the season begins we program a two-week Intensive led by Associate Artistic Director Kate Hennig along with senior company members and visiting experts, designed to give young actors an immersion into the techniques of classical, ensemble theatre as well as an introduction into the political, social and cultural history of our namesake’s era and to help them create the bonds that make our ensemble so expert in their work. The Neil Munro Intern Directors Project, named for our late Associate Director, is designed to showcase the work of our two intern directors, as they direct a one-act play that is then designed, rehearsed and presented for audiences of company members, specially invited artistic directors and other theatre professionals and members of the Governors Council. Dozens of young directors from across the country apply each year to intern with us, and many of our graduates are now enjoying successful careers as freelance directors and artistic directors. This showcase has been produced for many years and is unique in Canada. This program is generously funded by an anonymous donor. For our audiences we offer a range of programs, amplified by a significant investment in supporting Tim Carroll’s call for “…a more human, more connected theatre”. Throughout the performance season these activities include the Shaw seminars, teachers’ days, speakers’ series, backstage tours, workshops, lectures, public readings and pre- and post-show discussions (“Continue the Conversation”) with members of the acting ensemble and with the Guild. For visiting school, university and special-interest groups, we supplement the performances they attend with tours, workshops and discussions, and we offer drama school classes for 8 to 18-yearolds as well as adults. This activity is made possible by the generous support of The Slaight Family Foundation. The Slaight family has had a profound impact on The Shaw for decades, through their individual and collective generosity and leadership, and in 2009 the Academy was renamed in their honour. Their support is two-fold: as well as a generous annual grant for operations, the Foundation is building a large endowment as a legacy gift. The endowment is growing rapidly thanks in part to matching funding from the Canadian government — ensuring the future sustainability of the Academy and its many programs. We are so proud to announce that in 2018 the Slaight Family generously decided to continue funding of the Academy for another decade, contributing $5 Million over the next 10 years (2019–2028) to support this amazing series of programs In addition to the Slaight Family gifts, The Shaw enjoys significant support for this important aspect of our work from the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, the RBC Foundation and the RBC Emerging Artists Project, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life, The Jeffrey Marshall Fund for Student Engagement and Niagara Airbus as well as the two Christopher Newton Internships, generously sponsored by Marilyn and Charlie Baillie.

BASIS OF PRESENTATION The Theatre follows the deferral method of accounting for contributions, which include donations, foundation distributions and government grants. Grants, bequests and donations related to specific events or programs are recorded in the accounts when received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue when initially recorded in the accounts. Externally restricted contributions are deferred when initially recognized in the accounts and recognized as revenue in the year in which the donor has stipulated.
SHAW FESTIVAL THEATRE ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION
The Endowment Foundation was formed in 2003 under the chairmanship of Anthony R. Graham, a Past Chair of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada. It is a separately incorporated entity in Canada. The Foundation is a registered charitable foundation with the charities division of the Canada Revenue Agency whose objects are to receive, hold and maintain one (1) or more funds and to transfer from time to time all or part of the income therefrom and the capital thereof (unless endowed by the contributor) for the benefit of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada. The Foundation’s funds are used for the long-term support of the Shaw Festival. They are invested by a portfolio manager, Letko Brosseau and Associates Inc, whose performance is monitored by the Investment Committee of the Foundation’s Board. A portion of the net income earned each year provides The Shaw with a reliable source of revenue for operations, and fosters initiatives such as new play development and education programs. As the endowment grows, it is becoming a significant source of revenue through both prudent investment and continuing contributions from donors who appreciate that a healthy endowment is a sign of fiscal responsibility. The Endowed Fund includes donor contributions, contributions from the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund of Heritage Canada, and contributions from the Ontario Arts Fund. We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through their matching program, as well as many generous individuals and the Province of Ontario. It also holds the Andy Pringle Creative Reserve, a pair of funds (both endowed and restricted) honouring former Board Chair Andy Pringle, and designed to allow the Shaw’s Executive team more opportunity to take risks and build capacity through strategic investment. Though the list of donors is significant, we wish (in particular) to acknowledge the extremely generous gifts of Tim and Frances Price and Marilyn and Charles Baillie to the endowment. Gifts to the Endowment Foundation can be received from both Canadian and American donors. SHAW FESTIVAL THEATRE ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION

SHAW IN OUR COMMUNITY / SHAW ON TOUR The Shaw Festival has a long history of taking its productions to other venues, starting as early as 1967 — Canada’s centennial year — when at the end of the sixth season Major Barbara travelled to Montreal and Winnipeg. In the current era, we have divided our work outside our theatres in Niagara-on-the-Lake as belonging to one of two types of work. Shaw on Tour — our work going out to other professional theatre colleagues and co-producers — and Shaw in the Community — performances in venues and locations that bring theatre directly into community spaces like hospitals, elderly-care facilities and shelters, as well as pop-up events and secret theatre happenings for our own Niagara communities. In 2018, a run of our 2016 hit play Master Harold...and the Boys travelled to Montreal’s Centaur Theatre and Buffalo’s 710 Main St Theatre in partnership with Obsidian Theatre (Toronto). Middletown, the darling of our 2017 season, was remounted in Toronto at Crow’s Theatre, in partnership with them, to tremendous success. O’Flaherty, VC toured into community venues and Legion halls in Niagara throughout the summer. Secret Theatre events occurred all over town, many themed to the anniversary of WW1, and an audience composed of local migrant farm workers and their families joined us at The Magician’s Nephew and Grand Hotel. Added to this were run out trips to Florida, Cleveland and New York with artists reading and showcasing work from the season. All of these generated parternships and goodwill that are going to have lasting and repeatable impact on our future.
NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT Since the introduction of playwrights into the Shaw Company and new work into our programming, our audiences have shown their enthusiasm for a wide range of plays, translations and adaptations. Past successes include Belle Moral: A Natural History by Ann-Marie MacDonald, which premiered in 2005 and Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea in a new version by Erin Shields, who won the 2011 Governor General’s Literary Award for English Language Drama. In 2018 we offered three new works to our audiences including a new adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew by Michael O’Brien, the Mythos trilogy by Stephen Fry and The Orchard (After Chekhov) by Sarena Parmar, as well commissioning new revisions of Edmund Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac by Kate Hennig, C.S. Lewis’ Horse and His Boy by Anna Chatterton and partnering with Ravi Jain and Why Not Theatre to create a new multi production adaptation of the South Aisan epic, the Mahabharata. To bring these new works to the stage involves a process of readings, workshops and design, sometimes over several seasons. Both The Shaw and our Canadian writers are eligible for funding from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council in the form of special grants, and the annual support we receive from both these agencies reflects in part our commitment to advancing the theatrical canon. We are also grateful for special funding received from individual donors who want to support this important work, and who are delighted to be a part of our new play development process.

The Shaw Festival cannot maintain our stature as one of the last, great repertory ensemble theatre companies in the English world without the support of thousands of generous donors. We receive grants and gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and all levels of government. These contributions, from both Canada and the US, support our work in our multiple theatres, in the community and around the world, as well as securing our future through gifts to our Endowment Foundation. We are grateful to all our donors, and welcome gifts of any size. While we cannot list everyone who contributed in the 2018 season, we acknowledge here our most generous contributors.
