CHAIR’S REPORT

In 2019 we managed to continue our trend of financial operating surpluses, while putting another fabulous year of art on our stages. Both are crucial to our long-term sustainability. I don’t believe I can overstate that our artistic and business successes come from the strength of our remarkable repertory ensemble and the technicians, craftspeople, artisans, volunteers and arts workers who support them — so first and foremost — thank you all! 2019 continued our significant progress toward realizing our many strategic objectives, while increasing connectivity to audiences and communities and increasing the number of tickets sold. Our attendance at productions in Niagara-on-the-Lake increased by over 26,000, and more than 25% of all these attendees were new to Shaw! Our amazing Education teams offered more than 1900 events to an astounding 56,000 people. Of particular note is the terrific job the Shaw Guild does in supporting these events. TC continued to entertain, challenge and provoke us. We also introduced a new seating method that seems to be resonating with audiences and artists alike as it increases proximity and relationship within our theatres. Brigadoon and The Ladykillers were popular favourites, driving our largest sales, with Rope, The Horse and His Boy and Shaw’s Getting Married not far behind. Our new holiday offering of Holiday Inn paired perfectly with our remounting of A Christmas Carol to bring more than 36,000 people to Niagara-on-theLake in what used to be the “off season.” Shorter runs of Man and Superman with Don Juan in Hell, Sex, The Glass Menagerie, Victory, The Russian Play and Cyrano de Bergerac were all artistically brilliant, provoking constant arguments about which one was ‘the best thing I’ve seen in years’; that was the constant refrain I heard all year. While it is always tricky to single out specific contributions given the outstanding efforts of the whole artistic team, I would

be remiss not to note Gray Powell’s Olympian capacities as an actor in Man and Superman, TC’s brilliant decision to bring on Kimberley Rampersad as our first Intern Artistic Director and install her as the director of that piece, and the stunning work of our costume depart ment in bringing the 17th century (an era with which it has had little past experience) to life in Cyrano and Victory! On the business side we managed to invest significantly in capital work and future artis tic opportunities. Tim Jennings and his team continue working toward a solid working capi tal reserve that will make us less dependent on bank financing for our annual cash f low management. Thank you to the two Tims and our wonder ful staff for another amazing year, ensuring our theatre lives up to its charitable mission to excite, inspire, provoke, educate and delight. And thank you to my colleagues on our three Boards, and to our donors, partners and patrons, for the exceptional and increased ded ication and support you have shown over the last few years. Our accomplishments simply cannot happen without your support. I am delighted you continue to be on this jour ney with us! peter jewett

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

I want to thank our creative teams, technicians, staff and artists, all three of our Boards and our amazing Guild for all of their work in helping produce our 2019 season and in being the real engine that helped us generate some really terrific results! While the producer in me might be best pleased by our 13% increase in gross operating revenues over 2018, bringing us to a new all-time high of $34.15 million, the real win for me is what that means in terms of attendance and investment by the public in our charitable programs, the resulting sustainable, expanded employment for our artists, technicians and seasonal staff, and in the accompanying positive economic impact on the town and region generally. Season attendance increased to 267,413, achieving our best results since our 50th anniversary season almost a decade ago. Both sales and fundraising revenues achieved all-time highs, with fundraising up a significant 7% over last season, to over $8.8 million. Education events and attendance grew by approximately 20%. The Foundation increased its holdings significantly in both donations and earnings from investment, to end the year at a $29.5 million Fund Balance. This is up $2.8 million over 2018, and follows the annual distribution from earnings. We also launched our new holiday musical program with Holiday Inn, to explosive nightly standing ovations and have received many letters begg ing for its return. The season operating surplus was $519 K, continuing our goal of providing a net contribution to the Festival of between 1% – 2% of gross annua lly — ensuring an excellent balance of fiscal responsibility through a continued and significant investment into artist and staff sustainability, long-term capital investments and in bourgeoning our charitable mission to provide excellent, provocative and artistically powerful programs.

2020 continues last season’s program that more than doubled the number of lowest price ($25 – $40) tickets available to the public over prior years, as well ensuring that the new ways in which we manage seating to provide the best possible experience for all of our patrons and artists. Of particular note was the increase in visits by our US patrons — always a significant portion of annual attendance — which grew in 2019 by over 10%. The 2020 season offers 14 productions, including the two-part premiere of Mahabharata with WhyNot Theatre, the return of 2017’s Sherlock Holmes team with a new Holmes mystery, three musicals, Jackie Maxwell’s return to direct in the theatre that now bears her name, a partnership with Parks Canada at Fort George, plus even more conversations, events and surprises. I am pleased and proud to see The Shaw enjoy ing increased stability and the snowballing enthusiasm for TC’s call for a more human, more connected theatre. On behalf of the almost 600 people who work here at The Shaw, our 350+ Guild members, 30+ Board members and all of those local residents and businesses who benefit from your visits — Thank you! See you soon and all my very best, tim jennings

THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams, directed by László Bérczes, set designed by Balázs Cziegler, costumes designed by Hanne Loosen, lighting designed by Mikael Kangas. Julia Course as Laura and Jonathan Tan as Jim.

“Like the symbolic figurines at the heart of the play, The Glass Menagerie requires a delicate touch. Hungarian director László Bérczes finds just the right balance of poetry and magic to ensure it shimmers and sparkles without breaking.” now magazine, toronto

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Last season felt like a breakthrough for us. And by ‘us’ I mean all of us — you the audience and we the theatre makers. Everyone raised their game: we put on a set of shows that we can be very proud of; and you brought to those shows an open and curious spirit. We asked you to engage with our work with your heads and your hearts, and that’s what you did: the conversations we had with each other, about shows that moved you as well as about shows that left you baffled or angry, were all passionate and enlightening. The Shaw audience is extraordinary, and I am getting to know you better and better, while you are getting to know me and my taste. No one play here will please everyone, still less a whole season; but I am proud not only of the spirit in which our work is made but of the spirit in which you engage with it. Having said that you can’t please everyone, we sometimes came damn close last year. The Russian Play was widely regarded as a deliciously satisfying mouthful, while Man and Superman was an extravagantly enjoyable feast. Between those two extremes there were shows that made our hearts sing, like Brigadoon, and those which tickled our wits, like Getting Married. We laughed at The Ladykillers, wept at The Glass Menagerie, shuddered at Rope, and swooned at Cyrano. The emotional experiences covered a great range, but every piece was linked by the high quality of the writing and the hard-won skill of the actors, whose eloquence looks so easy until we look at the world around us and see how rare it is. Whatever the show, I’m really pleased that this year we were able to expand our ‘Continue the Conversation’ sessions, in which you thrash out what you had just seen together; we also had a great many Q&A sessions with actors and other artists, along with countless other opportunities for you to meet us and tell us what you are thinking. I wonder sometimes if those of us (including me) who have not just

spent two hours on-stage, offering up work that has been made over so many weeks of love and dedication, understand how vulnerable it is to have someone come up to you straight afterwards and give their opinion. And yet our actors really are a remarkable group of people: they work very hard to remain open to every encounter, because they know that you share the passion for excellence that brings us all here. I’m lucky to have so many great colleagues, starting with an incredibly committed and supportive Board. I want to thank everyone who makes all this happen, and assure them and you that there will be no resting on our laurels. Last year was a good one; but this one can be better. tim carroll

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Shaw wishes to acknowledge and honour the land upon which we gather as the historic and traditional territory of First Nations peoples. In particular, we recognize and thank the Neutral Nation, the Mississauga and the Haudenosaunee for their stewardship of these lands over millennia. We also wish to thank all of the First Nations peoples in Canada, and the indigenous peoples of the United States, for their ongoing and important roles in the caretaking of the lands beneath our feet, wherever we travel on Turtle Island.

MAN AND SUPERMAN with Don Juan in Hell by Bernard Shaw, directed by Kimberley Rampersad, designed by Camellia Koo, lighting designed by Kevin Lamotte, original music by Joseph Tritt. Gray Powell as Don Juan and Sara Topham as Doña Ana.

“Powell, as Tanner, speaks at a quick-enough clip to keep us exhilarated, and he depicts thinking as action...Topham’s performance as Ann is equally wonderful. Her silence always seems one step ahead of his words.” Toronto Star

THE HORSE AND HIS BOY adapted for the stage by Anna Chatterton, based on the novel by C.S. Lewis, directed by Christine Brubaker, designed by Jennifer Goodman, lighting designed by Siobhán Sleath, projections designed by Cameron Davis, original music and sound designed by Deanna H. Choi, movement and puppetry direction by Alexis Milligan. Matt Nethersole as Shasta with Jane Johanson, Jay Turvey and Krystal Kiran.

“With an emphasis on ensemble playing and fluidly mobile design, Christine Brubaker’s production keeps this potentially complicated tale engaging and clear, and moral lessons feel earned rather than tacked on.” toronto star

PROFESSIONAL AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: THE SLAIGHT FAMILY ACADEMY Now entering its second decade, programs are offered through The Slaight Family Academy, all designed to inform, enrich and deepen The Shaw experience.

public readings and pre- and post-show discussions (“Continue the Conversation”) with members of the acting ensemble, the Guild and Shaw company members.

Professionally, Shaw, through the Academy, provides in-season training for members of the company as well as apprenticeships for young actors, designers, directors, technicians and stage managers. Before the season begins we program a two-week Intensive led by Associate Artistic Director Kate Hennig along with senior company members and visiting experts, designed to give young actors an immersion into the techniques of classical, ensemble theatre as well as an introduction into the political, social and cultural history of our namesake’s era and to help them create the bonds that make our ensemble so expert in their work.

For visiting school, university and specialinterest groups, we supplement the performances they attend with tours, workshops and discussions, and we offer drama school classes for 8- to 18-year-olds as well as adults.

The Neil Munro Intern Directors Project, named for our late Associate Director, is designed to showcase the work of our two intern directors, as they direct a one-act play that is then designed, rehearsed and presented for audiences of company members, specially invited artistic directors and other theatre professionals and members of the Governors Council. Dozens of young directors from across the country apply each year to intern with us, and many of our graduates are now enjoying successful careers as freelance directors and artistic directors. This showcase has been produced for many years and is unique in Canada. This program is generously funded by an anonymous donor. In 2019 the Neil Munro Intern Directors were Brendan McMurtry-Howlet and Cherissa Richards. For our audiences we offer a range of programs, amplified by a significant investment in supporting Tim Carroll’s call for “…a more human, more connected theatre.” Throughout the performance season these activities include the Shaw Seminars, Teachers’ Days, speakers’ series, backstage tours, workshops, lectures,

This activity is made possible by the generous support of The Slaight Family Foundation. The Slaight family has had a profound impact on The Shaw for decades, through their individual and collective generosity and leadership, and in 2009 the Academy was renamed in their honour. Their support is two-fold: as well as a generous annual grant for operations, the Foundation is building a large endowment as a legacy gift. The endowment is growing rapidly thanks in part to matching funding from the Canadian government — ensuring the future sustainability of the Academy and its many programs. We are so proud to announce that in 2018 The Slaight Foundation generously committed to continue funding the Academy for another decade, contributing $5 million over the next 10 years (2019–2028) to support this amazing series of programs. In addition to The Slaight Foundation gifts, The Shaw enjoys significant support for this important aspect of our work from the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, the R BC Foundation and the R BC Emerging Artists project, Canada Life, The Jeffrey Marshall Fund for Student Engagement, Niagara Airbus, The Shaw Guild as well as the two Christopher Newton Internships, generously sponsored by Marilyn and Charles Baillie. The 2019 Christopher Newton Interns were Julie Lumsden and Kimberley Rampersad.

SHAW FESTIVAL THEATRE ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION

The Endowment Foundation was formed in 2003 under the chairmanship of Anthony R. Graham, a Past Chair of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada. It is a separately incorporated entity in Canada. The Foundation is a registered charitable organization and a public foundation whose objects are to receive, hold and maintain one (1) or more funds and to transfer from time to time all or part of the income therefrom and the capital thereof [unless endowed by the contributor] for the benefit of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada. The Foundation’s funds are used for the longterm support of the Shaw Festival. During 2019 the investment committee of the foundation solicited proposals from 10 investment firms and chose to change portfolio management. The new fund managers are Fiera Capital Corporation and RP Investment Advisors. A portion of the net income earned each year provides The Shaw with a reliable source of revenue for operations, and fosters initiatives such

as new play development and education programs. As the endowment grows, it is becoming a significant source of revenue through both prudent investment and continuing contributions from donors who appreciate that a healthy endowment is a sign of fiscal responsibility. Thanks to the generosity of many Shaw supporters and the Canadian Federal and Provincial endowment matching incentive programs, the Shaw Festival Endowment has grown to $29.5 million as of December 2019. The Endowed Fund includes donor contributions, contributions from the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund of Heritage Canada, and contributions from the Ontario Arts Fund.

Gifts to the Endowment Foundation can be received from both Canadian and American donors.

SHAW IN OUR COMMUNITY / SHAW ON TOUR The Shaw Festival has a long history of taking its productions to other venues, starting as early as 1967 — Canada’s centennial year — when at the end of the sixth season Major Barbara travelled to Montreal and Winnipeg. In the current era, we have divided our work outside our theatres in Niagara-on-the-Lake as belonging to one of two types of work. Shaw on Tour — our work going out to other professional theatre colleagues and co-producers — and Shaw in the Community — performances in venues and locations that bring theatre directly into community spaces like hospitals, elderlycare facilities and shelters, as well as pop-up events and Secret Theatre happenings for our own Niagara communities. While there were no formal tours in 2019,

Secret Theatre events occurred all over town and an audience composed of local migrant farm workers and their families joined us at Brigadoon and The Horse and His Boy. We welcomed groups from a local women’s shelter at performances of Sex, and arranged music performances in local elderly care facilities. We are grateful to the Kingfisher Foundation for their help in supporting these activities. Added to this were run out trips to Florida, Muskoka and New York with artists reading and showcasing work from the season as well as a British national tour of our 2017 production of Stephen Fry’s trilogy Mythos, directed again by our own Tim Carroll. All of these generated partnerships and goodwill that will have lasting and repeatable impact on our future.

NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT Since the introduction of playwrights into the Shaw Company and new work into our programming, our audiences have shown their enthusiasm for a wide range of plays, translations and adaptations. Past successes include Belle Moral: A Natural History by Ann-Marie MacDonald, which premiered in 2005 and Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea in a new version by Erin Shields, who won the 2011 Governor General’s Literary Award for English Language Drama. In 2019 we offered two new works to our audiences including a brilliant new adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac by Kate Hennig, and C.S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy by Anna Chatterton. We continued the commission process and partnership with Miriam Fernandes, Ravi Jain and Why Not Theatre to create a new epic adaptation of the South Asian epic, the Mahabharata for 2020 and also added commissions for Damien Atkins in creating the 2020 season’s Prince Caspian and for

Alexandra Montagnese and Mike Peterson for their A Short History of Niagara. To bring these new works to the stage involves a process of readings, workshops and design, sometimes over several seasons. Both The Shaw and our Canadian writers are eligible for funding from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council in the form of special grants, and the annual support we receive from both these agencies ref lects in part our commitment to advancing the theatrical canon. We are also grateful for special funding received from individual donors and Foundations who want to support this important work, and who are delighted to be a part of our new play development process

The Shaw Festival cannot maintain our stature as one of the last great repertory ensemble theatre companies in the English world without the support of thousands of generous donors. We receive grants and gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and all levels of government. These contributions, from both Canada and the US, support our work in our multiple theatres, in the community and around the world, as well as securing our future through gifts to our Endowment Foundation. We are grateful to all our donors, and welcome gifts of any size. While we cannot list everyone who contributed in the 2019 Season, we acknowledge here our most generous contributors.
