When the United States landed on the moon, the first word spoken was "Houston... True to character, Houston's "first-list" expands to include indoor baseball in air conditioned comfort, deliberately setting out to make healthcare a major industry, and, as trivia enthusiasts discover, it was a Houston restaurant to first serve "drive-in style". Just as amazing; Houston is the largest port in the world that's not on water. Houston's a pioneer town of tremendous renown, chock-ful of history, culture and beauty. Houston is indeed a shining star. There's a lot of pride in Houston. It's a city vibrating with spirit, ideas and action. We are "Houston proud," and dedicated to improving the quality of life and promoting civic pride. We are the nerve-center of America's manned-flight space program, and welcome all visitors, whether here on business, for pleasure or as a convention delegate. We invite you to look around with the idea of coming back for a visit or for a lifetime.

HCA / HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY HOLIDAY PARTY AT RINGSIDE INSIDE SULLIVAN’S STEAKHOUSE BENEFITTING STAR OF HOPE AND YOUNG TEXANS AGAINST CANCER
Photos by Z Photography
5 THIS MONTH IN HOUSTON
Over 160 members of the Houston Concierge Association, Hospitality Industry, Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Galleria Area Chamber of Commerce gathered on December 1st for a fantastic Holiday Party. Thanks to the dedication of one of the HCA’s most loyal supporters – Arthur Mooradian, the guests were treated to a spectacular event for the third year in a row. Jazz legend Harry Sheppard provided the entertainment throughout the affair and guests enjoyed sumptuous appetizers and cocktails. At 7:30, HCA President Helen Clark along with the Board of Directors presented the checks from the HCA Concierge Classic Golf Tournament to Marilyn Fountain with Star of Hope and Amy Donovan with YTAC. HCA Secretary, Kim Murry gave out two special recognition gifts to Cookie Howard for her efforts on the “Better Half Gala’ and to Zonia Alvarez for her generous contributions as Historian to the Association. The HCA is so fortunate and blessed to have such a wonderful relationship with supporters like Arthur, we are truly grateful for all you do and have done over the years. Again we would like to thank Arthur, Kristi, the entire staff at Sullivan’s, our dear friend Harry Sheppard and all those who attended and showed their support for these two wonderful charities.

There are a lot of family friendly activities in Houston, here are some of my favorites. Colton from Cavender’s Boot City HOUSTON The Natural Science Museum has a lot of stuff. There are permanent collections of minerals, natural history exhibits, a planetarium with laser shows and an Imax theater, a butterfly habitat, a paleontology exhibit with dinosaurs, and a new chemistry hall. This place is very crowded, especially on weekends, and you should call in advance for reservations for the Imax, planetarium and butterfly exhibit. The Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a stunning, living exhibit that showcases hundreds of live butterflies in a naturalistic rainforest setting. The central conservatory is a dramatic three-story glass cone filled with tropical plants and exotic butterflies. During a typical visit, one can expect to see 50 to 60 different species of the world’s largest and most colorful butterfly species, flying through the balmy air, hovering over flowers or sipping fruit juice – and occasionally, landing on visitors! Downtown Aquarium Sea creatures of every shape and size are on view at the Downtown Aquarium. The Sunken Temple exhibit reveals the wonders of ancient Mayan culture and the underwater world, while a journey on the Shark Voyage gives you an intimate view of the ocean's most infamous predators. A great place for family fun, the aquarium also features outdoor attractions such as the 100-foot Diving Bell Ferris Wheel and the Dancing Fountains. Drink and dine at the Aquarium Restaurant or the Dive Lounge. And while there, make sure to check out the new white tigers exhibit.
Space Center Houston is the visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center. It's the product of the joint efforts of NASA and Disney Imagineering. Easily the most popular attraction in the Houston area, there's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. You'll find plenty of exhibits and activities to interest both adults and children. Western Dreamin’ We know your child’s dreams are as big as the wild west. Whether they're dreaming about riding and roping on the ranch or racing into first place around the barrels, Cavender’s has the hats, belts, boots, jeans and western shirts kids love! With a selection that can't be beat, and a price that won't break your budget, you can't go wrong! Come on in and shop the latest styles that will make your little cowboy or cowgirl's dreams come true. The Battleship Texas is docked near the San Jacinto Monument. The Texas fought in both World Wars, and has recently been extensively repaired. You can wander all over the ship, above and below deck.
KEMAH The Kemah Boardwalk is a hotel and restaurant destination in which also features a small selection of amusement rides. The main attractions of the 35-acre complex are its many restaurants, recreational sailing, and rides. GALVESTON Railroad Museum, shopping and Victoriana on the Strand, trolley to the ocean side. Rent a bicycle or skates and cruise along the 10 mile seawall. Moody Gardens has a 3D IMAX, a white sand beach, an indoor rainforest and beautiful landscaping.
Seasons of Sharing The Children's Museum of Houston is bursting with excitement over Seasons of Sharing, a holiday exhibit opening Nov. 14, 2009 to Jan. 10, 2010. Learn about seven holidays from around the world.. Ramadan, Diwali, Las Posadas, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the Lunar New Year will all be represented in Houston’s only multicultural holiday exhibit for children. These seven celebrations will come together in Seasons of Sharing, where a block-long neighborhood of houses light the way through the holiday season. Families will delight in seeing dipa lamps, menorahs, luminarias, kinaras, Christmas lights, and the crescent moon dazzle the neighborhood. A different cultural holiday will be spotlighted each week in which kids will learn about the culture through hands-on activities and games. HCA WINTER WONDERLAND IN THE WOODLANDS
On December 9th thanks to the incredible effort of Connie Deguerre with the Woodlands Chamber of Commerce the Houston Concierge Association enjoyed a truly magical evening. The event began with a social at the beautiful Bell Tower on 34th, where Chuy Terrazas gave us tours of the facility and had a wine reception. The group then boarded the limo bus provided by Merlo’s and headed up I-45 to our first stop – Gooses Acres. There we enjoyed cocktails appetizers and the music and ambience before heading over to the Ice Rink where we hit (literally) the ice. After skating it was off to Tesar’s. the critically acclaimed restaurant of Chef John Tesar and his wife Tracy. The group feasted on melt in your mouth appetizers at this wonderful restaurant. The HCA would like to give a special thanks to Connie for such an enchanting evening. We also wish to thank, Chuy, the Bell Tower, Merlo’s, Gooses Acres and Tesar’s.

HOUSTON CONCIERGE ASSOCIATION DAY AT DICKENS ON THE STRAND WITH BRUNCH AT THE SAN LUIS REORT
15 KEY HOUSTON
On December 5th the HCA held its second annual trip to Galveston for Dickens on the Strand. The group met downtown and boarded a beautiful limo bus provided courtesy of “Super Member” Mike Prisco of Merlo’s Limousines and Charters for the ride to the island. There thanks to the hard work of one of our most cherished and dedicated members-Marilyn Ortiz DeSimone of the Aquarium we were greeted with a private room at the beautifully decorated San Luis Resort for their lavish Sunday Brunch. Our host Phillet , dressed in full Dickens era attire along with GM Paul Schultz made sure everything was beyond perfect. We were joined by Galveston Historical Foundation Executive Director, Dwayne Jones who addressed the group and graciously provided us with tickets to the Festival. The weather complied and the entire association had a wonderful time and we are already looking forward to next year. A visit to Spec’s Liquor Warehouse & Deli “and a whole lot more store” is a Houston “must”.
“... one of the best Champagne collections in the world” -Bon Appetit “... one of the 100 things in Houston we wouldn’t want to live without” -Houston Chronicle “... one of best food and wine stores in America” - Food & Wine Magazine “... like Hakeem Olajuwan in basketball. Spec’s Warehouse has won ‘The Best Of’ so often that we are retiring them to our Hall of Fame” - Houston Press “... one of the original Leaders honored in 1984, again voted ‘Retailer of the Year’ in 1998” - Market Watch 1998
Don’t leave for home without it! Spec’s Warehouse truly is a one-to-a-continent phenomenon. Wine collectors from all over the world know and appreciate Spec’s three-generation-long dedication to selection, value and customer service. Spec’s offers more different labels than other stores have in total bottles. Over 110,000 bottles of wine. And wine is just the tip of the iceberg. Spec’s is “ a whole lot more”. The walk-in humidor is gaining similar recognition among cigar aficionados. Our finer foods, world cheeses and deli departments cover more floorspace than many supermarkets. And yes, we will make you a sandwich or a picnic basket. Rothschilds, Reubens, Russian caviar or Rebel Yell Bourbon ... if Spec’s doesn’t have it, it’s not in town. Perhaps not even in the country.
