Three months to save Westbury Library Campaigners have pledged to defeat city council plans which would see seven Bristol libraries, including Westbury-on-Trym, Redland, Clifton and Sea Mills, closing. Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie and Councillor Geoff Gollop (Westbury-onTrym) said they were ‘horrified’ by the announcement which follows a consultation over a scheme to save £1m from the libraries budget. They said the Westbury-onTrym library was one of the best used in the city and that asking residents – some of whom are elderly and without their own transport – to go to Henleaze was simply not acceptable. There will now be a further three-month consultation on the new plans. Ms Leslie is now conducting a survey and has launched a petition to gauge local feeling. The petition can be signed at http://savewotlibrary. bristolpetitions.com Continued on Page 2

They’re back, and it’s best to assume they’re on Beware the speed camera on Westbury Road (A4018) between Badminton School and St Ursula’s E-ACT Academy where the limit is currently 30mph. It is being turned on again after four years as part of a road safety project that will see 29 static cameras across the Avon & Somerset Constabulary region brought back to life. February 11th marked the start of this phased programme which, according to the police, could take weeks and months. Locations of all 29 are on the Avon police website, but not the reactivation dates. “Our message is loud and clear,” say the police. “Drivers should assume that all roadside fixed cameras are now operational and drive accordingly.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “This is a positive move which will improve the safety of roads across Avon and Somerset.

I know from speaking to people how important road safety is to them and many have been pressing to have the cameras in their communities turned back on as soon as possible. I’m pleased that I can now tell them they are back on.” Voice visited ours on Westbury Road on February 18th. Any flashes were from our camera, not it, but that may have been because drivers were

treating it with some respect. Alan Aburrow, Vice Chairman of Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership, is highly critical of the move. “Without any supporting evidence that this activity reduces accidents, there is a great danger that the public will regard the whole exercise as an easy cashcow for the local police authority

and local councils,” he said. “If the police were serious about safety they’d install these cameras outside every school.” An alternative would be to install visual displays in ‘hot spot’ locations. “But of course whilst they may slow down vehicles, they raise no revenue to pay for their installation or their continuing maintenance,” Alan added.

Leptospirosis

There have been an unusually high number of cases of leptospirosis in dogs in the Bristol area since November 2014 including some that have picked up a new strain of the disease. Unfortunately a number of dogs have died of the disease, including some that were vaccinated with the traditional L2 vaccine and we wanted to give dog owners an update on this situation. What is it? – Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which can affect many animals, but is seen much more commonly in dogs than cats. It is a zoonotic disease which means people can become infected too. There are several different strains of the bacteria, which can cause liver and kidney failure, as well as affecting other organs. How is it spread? – The bacteria survive well in warm wet conditions, so stagnant water such as ponds provide a good environment. It can also shed by many wild animals. Dogs that tend to live in a rural location or enjoy playing in water are at a higher risk. However ANY dog, even in a city environment, can contract it due to urban wildlife such as rats. What are the symptoms? – Leptospirosis can be hard to diagnose as symptoms can be varied and vague, including lethargy, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst and loss of appetite. If not treated effectively the disease can be fatal. What can be done? – Vaccinating your dog against leptospirosis is important to prevent infection and spread of this disease. Booster vaccinations for dogs have typically been aimed at the two most common strains of the bacteria, but recent cases have emerged in the local area that

were not covered by this current L2 vaccination. In order to give our patients the best protection we are now offering vaccinations against four strains of Leptospirosis (L4 vaccine). What does this mean to dog owners? – You should consider whether you should get your dog vaccinated against these new strains. This can be done at their next regular booster, or if you are worried or your dog likes water you may want to bring their booster vaccination forward to get them protected now. In order to form a protective immune response, we will then need to see them back 4 weeks later for a second dose, which will be given FREE OF CHARGE. Puppy owners can also take advantage of this. We would recommend seeing your new dog for a first vaccination at 8 weeks old, a second vaccination at 10 weeks old and a third vaccination at 12 weeks old. Your puppy will be protected against parvovirus, distemper and hepatitis a week after the second vaccination, so socialisation can still be started at your discretion, but bearing in mind the risk factors for leptospirosis mentioned earlier. Full protection for leptospirosis will be at 1-3 weeks after the third vaccination is given. For the very latest information, please look at our website (animalhousevets.com) or like us on our facebook page (facebook. com/animalhousevetsbristol). If you have any questions about the new vaccination or need help to work out what is best for your dog, then please call the practice on 0117 3355999 or book an appointment to see one of our vets.

THE future of Westbury-onTrym’s post office remains uncertain following a decision not to move it to the McColl’s convenience store nearby. After views were sought from local people on the possible relocation, the Post Office said that McColl’s Retail Group decided “not to progress their application”. “The branch at High Street, Westbury-on-Trym will therefore continue to operate from the current location for the time being,” the statement continues. “However we may carry out a further local public consultation on another location in the near future.” No time limit has been put on this process, and any new site proposal would be subject to another six-week consultation. In the past, opposition to any move was led by the

Westbury-on-Trym Society whose chairman Hilary Long told Voice: “Westbury-on-Trym is proud that all the traditional Post Office services can still be found in the village in a purpose-built, landmark building that functions very well in its present location. We hope it can continue for many more years, bringing many people into Westbury’s shopping centre.” Campaigners say there is nowhere else suitable for the number of functions and volume of business the post office has to carry out. The striking red brick post office building was designed and built for the purpose before the war. Changes to the layout since the Post Office franchised the business a few years ago have drawn considerable criticism, with customers often forced to queue outside.

It’s the second time that the Post Office has suggested a move to what is now McColl’s. In the nineties they wanted to go there when it was College Stores.

where it is for the time being . . . Nevertheless, users believe that a quality re-fit to the interior plus improvements to the quality of merchandise on offer would enable it to serve the community successfully for at least another generation. But that’s not how the Post Office sees it. It says that “this change is part of a major programme of modernisation and investment taking place across the post office network, the largest in the history of Post Office Ltd.” “I don’t know why they have to shrink the post office,” said Lucie Redway who has been a customer there for more than 50 years. “If the building was designed as a post office that’s how it should stay.” “By all means adapt it, but it’s a huge building and should be used for its original purpose.” Mrs Long said: “The choice of McColl’s was a big mistake. It would have been totally

unsuitable for the large number of people still needing to use a main Post Office for social, banking and foreign currency services. “You think they would have learned, because in the Nineties the Post Office suggested a move into the McColl’s unit when it was ‘College Stores’ and this was strongly opposed by local councillors, the Westbury Society and a very large number of local people. “It’s less than four years since the Post Office branches at Sea Mills, Stoke Bishop, Stoke Lane and Wellington Hill West all closed. At that stage we were assured that the Westbury Post Office was more important than ever and there is no reason to think that the volume of business has changed at all since then. “In fact it has increased as evidenced by the long queues on some days of the week.”

Hilary Long, who chairs the Westbury-on-Trym Society, is a long-term campaigner for leaving the Post Office in its present “purpose-built landmark building”. She is pictured with David Redway who has been a regular customer at the Westbury Post Office for more than 50 years

he five of us have just got back from a three day visit to London. We were so lucky with the weather and had a fine old time, mainly on foot. With recent anniversaries we visited the Imperial War Museum for the WWI exhibition, the British Museum for Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece for KS2 history syllabus stuff, the Science Museum as our middle son really wanted to go on a flight simulator. After that he and his brothers grudgingly consented to being dragged round a James Lovelock exhibition and the history of Mathematics. Best of all Lynne e-mailed our local MP on Sunday and by Wednesday one of his researchers was giving us a tour around the Palace of Westminster. Our oldest got to see the Magna Carta, the Act of Succession, and the Equalities Act: for various personal reasons all very important to me. Lynne is passionate about improving access to eye care, improving quality of eye care and has campaigned locally and nationally. We may not be involved in the huge legislative ideas as above but we aim to do what we can in our field. We heard last week that Lynne has been short listed for Optometrist of the Year, 2015. I think Lynne is an inspiration for all of us in the variety and consistent excellence of her professional role. Thank you to all the teachers, GPs, Gloucester

Boundary review - next stage in May With the first stage of the controversial boundary review completed, Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym now have to wait until May to see the final recommendations of the Local Government Boundary Commission.

The process started on December 9th when the boundary commission published its draft recommendations. The commission explained: “Our review aims to deliver electoral equality for local voters. This means that each councillor

The village hall, one of Westbury’s most cherished landmarks, could become part of Henleaze

represents a similar number of people so that everyone’s vote in council election is worth roughly the same regardless of where you live.” It was proposed that Bristol City Council should continue to have 70 city councillors. Four wards should have single members, 27 should have two members and four should have three members. Currently our two wards each have two members. Councillors Clare Campion-Smith and Glenise Morgan represent Henleaze, and Councillors Alastair Watson (Bristol’s Lord Mayor) and Geoffrey Gollop represent Westbury-on-Trym. The draft recommendations included Westbury-on-Trym being represented by one councillor only, and the historic village centre becoming part of Henleaze. This caused outrage in Westbury, and after discussions co-ordinated by the Westbury-

on-Trym Society the suggestion put forward to the boundary commission was that the whole of the existing Westbury ward should be joined with Henleaze as a “partnership ward” represented by three councillors. The consultation period, spanning Christmas and New Year, was 10 weeks. All views had to be with the boundary commission by February 16th. Once the boundary commission agrees its final recommendations in May it will lay a draft order in both Houses of Parliament. How this is affected by the General Election on May 7th is unclear, but the official line from the boundary commission is that Parliament will have 40 days to consider the recommendations, and if both Houses are satisfied the draft order will be ‘made’ and the new wards will come into effect at the council elections in May 2016.

Westbury Park opposes wards partnership Westbury Park Community Association is opposed to the idea of a Henleaze-Westburyon-Trym partnership ward represented by three councillors. The Westbury Park area is currently divided between Redland and Henleaze wards with the ward boundary running along Coldharbour Road. In its comments to the Local Government Boundary Commission, the association says that the Westbury-on-Trym proposal “could be detrimental to those living in Henleaze and Westbury Park as Henleaze ward would potentially have less dedicated representation than the current two councillor arrangement. “We do therefore not wish to see any move away from the current two councillor arrangement which has served Henleaze ward well over the years.”

henleaze&westburyvoice ‘Henleaze could live with commission recommendations’ “In Henleaze we could live with the Boundary Commission recommendations,” says Councillor Clare Campion Smith, “but recognise that our neighbours could not. “The Boundary Commission have come up with a poor solution and need to look again in some depth at other possibilities. “In my submission I have suggested some possibilities including taking the Lake Road area into Henleaze as its physical links with Southmead are not easy. “It is easier to raise a campaign on a proposal that you do not like than to defend something that is tolerable,” she told Henleaze & Westbury Voice. “The outcome for Henleaze from the final proposals could be much worse than the current two member ward proposal and we would have no right of reply.” In her submission to the Boundary Commission Clare Campion Smith said that reducing four councillors for Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym to three “seems a disproportionate reduction” “I do not believe that including the shopping centre of Westbury village, with its parish church and school, makes sense,” she went on. “I suggest it would be a more coherent solution for the local community to take in the area to the northwest of Southmead Road and to the south of Badock’s Wood.”

Education Henbury School student Abigail Steel didn’t hang about when she heard she had the chance to visit a school in Uganda. The 14-year-old started fund-raising, and in three weeks she exceeded her £1,000 target. Abigail, a keen swimmer and a member of Portway Swimming Club, organised a sponsored swim in which she completed 200 lengths of Henbury Pool, a total distance of 5k. She also sang in front of several hundred people at a carol event in Westbury village on Christmas Eve, as well as singing at two services and a Christmas dinner at Avonmouth Evangelical Chapel, which she attends every Sunday with her parents, Matthew and Louise and sister Lauren, 11. Abigail secured sponsorship from Skybound in Avonmouth towards her total £1,112 for the trip, which took place during the February holiday as part of the Bristol-Masindi link, supported by the British Council. She joined two students from

Abigail swims her way to Africa St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School and a party of teachers on the visit. Among them was Henbury School music teacher Elizabeth Mowat. Abigail visited families in Masindi and attended classes at Masindi Secondary School. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said. “ It was interesting to see what the lessons are like and how different the school is.” She admitted that her mum, a teaching assistant, and dad, who works for an insurance company, were a little worried about her going so far away – she’s only been as far as Spain and Italy before - but had supported her because they realised it was a wonderful opportunity. The family, who live in Brentry, will play host to a Ugandan student on a return visit in April. Abigail will give presentations to fellow students about the trip and will write an article for a local newsletter.

Miss Mowat has worked with her Year 7 classes to compose a folk song to record both in Uganda and Bristol. The BristolMasindi partnership began 13 years ago and has involved more than 300 teachers and some students. Teacher Celia Murray, one of the organisers of the exchange, said: “It is a wonderful opportunity for teachers from both countries.” She paid tribute to Abigail’s fundraising efforts. “Abigail has been a committed and independent Abigail’s sponsored swim young adult to achieve all of this in such a parents, and has really shown short time. She carried out all a true sense of determination the fundraising activities out of and dedication. She is a credit to school, with the support of her Henbury School.”

There has been a great response from QEH boys to the ‘Mile’itis Challenge organised by Rotary. Dr Richard Gliddon from Clifton Rotary Club and retired QEH Headmaster (1985-2000) says: “We are very grateful for the generosity of all the boys at QEH. At the last count we received 50 strips from QEH Juniors and 100 strips from QEH Seniors. I estimate that overall QEH raised £435 and this will enable 3,600 immunisations to be carried out!” He continues, “With the inclusion of returns from Red Maids’ Juniors, Clifton High and St Ursula’s we have raised well over £1000 and that means immunisations for over 8,800 children. We are grateful for the generosity of all the young people.” It costs just 36p to immunise a child for life against Polio. All donations will be trebled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation so that each completed strip will pay for 24 children to be vaccinated. Rotary’s aim is to eradicate

QEH boys go the extra mile for Bristol polio ‘Mile’itis Challenge polio from the world by raising enough money to provide vaccines in the countries where the disease is found. Rotary Clubs all over the world do fundraising to End Polio and since 1985 Rotary has donated US$1.2 billion to this initiative. Rotary Clubs in Bristol have regularly raised money for the End Polio Now campaign. This winter Clubs wish to raise £15,000 by collecting a mile of coins/donations which will be trebled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to make £45,000. Polio is short for poliomyelitis. Their ‘Mile’itis Challenge is a play on the word poliomyelitis. Meet new headmistress

Shadow Minister visits

STUDENTS at Fairfield High School had the chance to question Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna about job prospects for young people. Both Mr Umunna and local Labour hopeful Darren Jones stressed how it was important for teenagers to develop skills, make the most of opportunities and pursue their ambitions. They also heard about the success of FHS students in the Young Enterprise programme. A

Miss Stephanie Ferro is set to join Redland High School as headmistress this September. Here is a Q&A: What attracted you to Redland High School and to Bristol? I have friends in the city and have been visiting Bristol for about 15 years. I’ve followed discussions about schools in the local area, and when I visited Redland High last year for an open morning, I was struck by the warmth of the girls, their pride and a real sense of encouragement to be their best possible selves. Why a girls’ school? In my own education, and in educating young women during the last 20 years, I have seen how girls thrive personally and academically in a single sex environment. I care deeply about fostering an ethos where they can realise their potential. How would you describe your educational philosophy? My aim is to see young women enjoy a balanced life and pursue integrity in a context of connectedness. I want to see them delight in the wonder of scholarship and the world around us, with the resilience and flexibility of thinking that makes this possible. What are the main challenges facing the girls of today? I think it’s the challenge everyone has, regardless of gender. We all need to be confident of who we are and that we are valued, but even more so when the pace of change around us is so fast and we are preparing for an unknown future. Outside of school life, what do you enjoy doing? During holidays I ‘collect’ slands - last year Madeira, Brownsea and the Isle of Man - and spending time with my six godsons and their families. I enjoy singing and have performed in and coproduced amateur productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. I train for 5km charity runs, and look forward to trying Ashton Court park run.

team from the school developed a Somali sauce last year and won the West of England competition. New teams are taking part in the challenge this year. The visit to the school was part of Labour’s Future Jobs Tour of Britain. FHS has open evenings on : 18th March, 7-8.30pm and open mornings: 17th, 19th, 24th & 26th March, 9.15- 10.30am. Education Mexican magic at Badminton School

The rich and vibrant culture of Mexico inspired a memorable arts event at Badminton School. Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 staged a colourful exhibition of art work and a fashion show highlighting the work they have been doing since September. Parents, staff and students attended the event which included paintings, textiles, ceramics, face masks, 3D boxes and guitars among other pieces, all reminiscent of the country’s opulent art culture and some influenced by Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. A member of staff who attended the exhibition, Helen Read said: “This was a wonderful way to showcase our students’ work on the art and culture of Mexico. Many of our visitors were very impressed at the quality of the girls’ imaginative creations.”

Why school is proud to be going downhill rapidly YEAR 11 skiers from Clifton High School finished in the top 20 at the recent Independent School’s Ski and Snowboard Championships, held in Les Deux Alpes. Five pupils, aged between eleven and sixteen, participated in this winter’s competition, which attracted over 180 competitors from eleven other schools to the French ski resort. The school was overwhelmed with the ski team’s success, as the club was only established in February 2014. Clifton High offers weekly training sessions at the Mendip Outdoor Centre in Churchill, and regular ski trips. In 2013, visited Prato Norvoso in Italy, and next year, 70 pupils will be going on a ski trip to Sunday River in Maine, USA. Dr Alison Neill, head of the school, said: “We are a dynamic organisation, always looking for

new opportunities to enhance the skills and experiences of our young people. The ski club was developed following feedback from our pupils and has been a huge success”. The school’s sports department has changed markedly in recent years with the recruitment of a talented team of sports teachers, each bringing with them a fresh approach and individual sporting success. The school has also been keen to introduce a broad range of sporting clubs including archery, Tae Kwon Do, trampolining, gymnastics and water polo. Albert Einstein would have recommended the Bristol Steiner School education. Here’s why: Mr Einstein didn’t get to E = mc2 purely by rational thought. He had to make a creative leap. In today’s parlance he had to think outside the box. Something he wasn’t encouraged to do at school. Einstein was frustrated, like many parents today, by the traditional education system observing: “The spirit of learning and creative thought are lost in strict rote learning”. At Steiner we don’t believe in learning by rote. In fact we don’t even have textbooks. Instead we engage children in the learning process through a narrative from the teacher. That way learning becomes a joy, not a chore. And children are allowed to develop at their own pace which reflects the basic tenet of Rudolf Steiner: “Education should be a journey, not a race.” We also differ from conventional schooling by placing as much emphasis on creative as academic. Why? In Albert Einstein’s own words: “The greatest scientists are artists as well. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the World.” We couldn’t agree more.

Advertising Feature What makes Bristol Steiner School different from other mainstream schools? We do not teach the state curriculum. The Steiner ethos is concerned with providing an unhurried and creative learning environment where pupils can experience the joy in learning and the richness of childhood, rather than the pressure of exam orientated or hot-housing education • There is a focus on the social well-being of classes. When children look forward to going to school, have a love of learning and enjoy a social life, discipline problems tend to be less frequent and less serious • Children of different ages mix and play together and there is a peer support system in place • Bristol Steiner school is co-educational and uses a curriculum which is structured to respond to the developmental needs of children, promote creativity and free-thinking, and to provide them with the skills they need to become balanced, well-rounded individuals. • As well as academic skills, the

What’s so special about 38, Church Road, Westbury-onTrym? Better known as Elsie Briggs House, it is acknowledged as the oldest lived-in property in Bristol and a crucial part of Westbury’s long history. It was built in 1445 next door to what is now the parish church. By then the church, originally a Saxon wooden structure, had already been there for around 500 years. After the Reformation it passed into private hands and by the end of the 19th century

Chris Hillman, warden of Elsie Briggs House.

‘Spring Awakening’ for Bristol’s oldest house was one of Westbury’s many laundries. It reverted to a private house, and Dr Elsie Briggs of Bristol University lived there from 1958 and did much to uncover its 15th century features. On her death in 1988 she bequeathed it to the Bristol Diocese, and in 1991 it opened – as she intended – as an ecumenical house for contemplative prayer. It continues as such, with Chris Hillman as warden. But only because of the magnificent work of the Friends of Elsie Briggs House who continually have to fund both planned and unplanned maintenance. Last summer the Friends had to find nearly £4,000 for the roof and chimneys, and the year before £11,500 was needed to restore an ancient beam. Further external work will be needed later this spring. The next big fundraising

Running from March 5 to May 30, the exhibition will showcase six contemporary American Indian fine art photographers who will surprise and delight with sublime and arresting imagery. Chemehuevi photographer Cara Romero creates both intimate portraits and playful reconstructions of iconic works, featuring performance art hero ‘Buffalo Man’. There are turns towards tradition as Tlingit photographer Zoe Urness’ sepia prints on wood focus on more romantic themes of ceremony and nature, while Sarah Sense weaves photographs of her world travels into intriguing textures.

Help create an artistic project in your neighbourhood Residents in Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym can all have a say in a local arts project to mark the year of Bristol European Green Capital. Neighbourhood Arts Programmes will take place all over Bristol during 2015, thanks to grants of £10,000 from Green Capital funding to each to the city’s 14 Neighbourhood Partnerships. The principle is that each project should be driven by communities and created with professional artists. Input from individual residents, community groups and local businesses will shape each project. After a period of public consultation, project consultants will put together creative brief for each neighbourhood. These briefs will be publicised for six weeks before artists, makers or facilitators are commissioned. In each case the £10,000 commission will include all project fees, materials and expenses, although volunteers may be provided to assist on the project. Initial stages of this process are already under way in six neighbourhoods, with artistic briefs now available to the public before commissions are issued. From this month Bristol’s remaining eight Neighbourhood Partnerships, including Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-onTrym, wiill start their projects by receiving and discussing creative ideas from local residents

ate Hoffmann, Matron at Spire The Glen Hospital Bristol, shares her top tips on the simple changes you can make to revive yourself after the winter months and get ready for summer. Hydrate Water is a natural appetite suppressant so it’ll help you eat less. It’s also important to help the body flush out toxins helping the kidneys to function well. Being properly hydrated is essential for good bowel function, which will reduce bloating, plus it’ll keep your skin looking glowing as well.

Change: Drink more water and eat more foods with high water content such as cucumber and watermelon, which are great snacks for the spring and summer months

Give your health and wellbeing a boost in time for summer Get the right amount of sunlight: The longer days are a good time to enjoy being outdoors. Our bodies absorb vitamin D from exposure to sunlight which is essential for good health. A lack of vitamin D is associated with weight gain. If you spend a lot of time indoors you could be affected. Although do take care in the sun as too much exposure can be harmful to your health.

Change: If you work in an office, always try to get out at lunchtime for a brisk walk and some fresh air to boost your Vitamin D levels.

Eat a seasonal diet: Adding seasonal produce to your diet can be a great

healthy change for spring and summer. Spring signals the start of seafood, fresh peas, new potatoes and varieties of lettuce. Summer yields a delicious crop of fruit and veg from blackberries and raspberries to broadbeans and asparagus.

Change:

Try experimenting with the dishes you cook to include seasonal produce to get a wider range of nutrients than you might usually eat.

Walk or cycle to work:

In the winter it’s easy to make excuses to stay in bed for longer, but with lighter mornings and evenings, now is a good time to try walking or cycling to work. Small, sustainable changes like this can make a big difference to your weight, health and happiness.

Change:

If you usually take the bus, get off a few stops early to fit in a walk before work. If you live near a work colleague why not arrange to walk home together.

Socialise:

The dark, wet, winter weather can make many of us feel like staying in on the sofa rather than going out to see friends. In the spring and summer the longer days and warmer temperatures make us feel more like socialising. A strong social network is important to help you through stressful times so focus on spending time with those who matter most.

Change:

Why not organise a camping trip, weekend walk or bbq for your loved ones.

Darren Jones, Labour candidate for Bristol North West, has pledged to help young people in Henleaze and Westbury get good quality apprenticeships if they decide not to pursue traditional academic routes into higher education if he and his party win the General Election this May. This month, Darren hosted a young people Q&A with secondary school pupils from Bristol with Shadow Secretary of State for Business Chuka Umunna MP. Young people were paired up with business leaders from Business West to discuss opportunities in life after school. They then fed back their thoughts to Chuka and Darren before asking the Shadow Business Secretary questions about university, apprenticeships and entrepreneurship. One key theme was confusion about access to apprenticeships. One young person said: “I want to do an apprenticeship after school but I went online to look and couldn’t find anything. I

Pledge to help young people find quality apprenticeships don’t know how to do it.” To help tackle problems such as this, Darren launched his Bristol Jobs Plan at the event, which includes continuing his Bristol Schools Business Forum. The Forum brings schools, community groups and businesses together to help get local young people into good quality, well paid local jobs, including apprenticeships. Darren said: “An apprenticeship should be about giving a young person good quality training and on the job experience to kick start their career after school. At the moment young people are unable to get an apprenticeship or worry that the ones that are available aren’t good enough. “We have some great employers in Bristol, especially in advanced engineering and digital, who could provide some

Alan Crawford, of Lyndhurst Accounting, has been voted Best in Property Tax in the UK in an award ceremony run by corporate finance magazine Acquisition International Magazine. Alan, 57, who has been an accountant for over three decades, fought off competition from thousands across the UK. The Chartered Accountant, from Lyndhurst Road, said: “This is a great honour and I’m really grateful to all my clients and peers who voted for me.” The award looks at contribution to client service, experience and skills in key areas over a 12 month period. Lyndhurst Accounting offers expert property tax advice and mortgage brokerage to help investors and developers avoid any pitfalls.

Alan works with his wife, Lynne, an independent mortgage adviser who has access to whole of market in order to find the best deal. Together, they offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for services involving property investment. Alan, who has also worked as a personal trainer at Clifton College and plays tennis to league level, said: “The price of property has soared over recent years, while salaries have not. “This has led to an increase in buy to lets as the price of houses and flats at the entry level is beyond the reach of first time buyers. “However, sometimes landlords fail to organise their investments well and end up paying out more tax than they need.” Alan, who has also worked as a chartered accountant in Kenya and Iraq, has seen his turnover treble since he set up Lyndhurst Accounting less than two years ago. He is now picking up new

clients on a daily basis. But when he first started he had to work a part-time job, delivering food, to keep money coming in. He worked 80 hours a week to get his business off the ground. He said: “It was really hard work, but the job was fun and enabled me to build up my business in a more financially secure way. “I would say to anyone starting out in business to expect to put in the hours and hard work, especially in the early days. “It’s also important to have a plan, get advice from others and have something which distinguishes you from your competitors.” Awards coordinator Nathan Angell said: “We’re proud to recognise firms from across the industry, who are leading the way in this often challenging field – and, in the process, helping to keep the wheels of global business turning.”

Alan Crawford, with his award for Best in Property Tax in the UK There were winners in a range of categories, from niche practices to large companies. Corporations such as Price Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG and Ernst & Young were also named as winners in their respective areas.

Advertising Feature Financial planning as tax year end nears

T

he last few weeks before the end of the tax year are an important time to maximise the use of your individual allowances, reliefs and exemptions. Some of these will be lost if not used before the tax year end which is, of course, 5th April. Income Tax: Key to planning here is making full use of the personal allowance, awareness of the higher rate tax threshold, the 45% tax charge that applies to taxable income that exceeds £150,000 and the fact that people with an income of more than £100,000 may lose some, or all, of their personal allowance. Planning income across married couples is essential for maximum tax efficiency as well as using tax efficient investments like ISAs, growth orientated unit trusts, single premium investment bonds, Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts, which are all valid income tax efficient investment strategies. Capital Gains Tax: Using the most under-utilised exemption of them all, your annual capital gains tax allowance, could mean a tax free ‘income’ of £11,000 and

33

a married couple can effectively double this exemption between them by transferring assets between themselves free of tax. Inheritance Tax: The freezing of the ‘nil rate band’ at £325,000 until 2017/18 is clearly bad news for wealthier individuals looking to leave a tax free legacy to their families. Individuals should at least consider the available £3,000 annual exemption before the tax year end and in addition use their gifts out of normal expenditure relief. Trust-based solutions like discretionary trusts, loan trusts and discounted gift trusts may well be suitable too. Pensions: Consider how best to maximise pension contributions which can divert your taxable income from the taxman to your retirement pot. Care must be taken not to exceed the Annual Allowance (now £40,000) and Life Time Allowance (now £1.25m). If you feel that you should be taking advantage of some, or all, of the tax planning strategies outlined above, then please get in touch for a complimentary initial discussion to see if we can help. Email richard.higgs@wealthwest. co.uk or telephone 0117 966 5699.

A

FTER the bedroom, the next most important place to create a sense of sanctuary in the home is in the living room. Most of us probably spend far too much time on our sofas already, but in my book if you work hard you get to lounge hard too. As sofas are so heavily used and abused they deserve a little TLC, and as one of the main focal points of most living rooms, treating the sofa to a makeover is a relatively inexpensive way to change the feel of the whole space.

I decided to liven up this plain, neutral grey sofa with an über cosy, slubby faux-fur throw, sand coloured cable knit cushions and a trio of vividly embroidered cushions which add a real punch of colour. Against the rich indigo backdrop (which one could almost swim in due to the paint’s high pigment content) they provide a much needed accent. The overall effect is inviting, bold, and a rather bohemian. The hexagonal shaped cushions are ethically produced and fairly traded, imported by Gloucester Road’s very own Shanti. But if that’s not to your taste, there’s a million other throws and pillows out there in different finishes and colourways to create an equally cosy look. Just remember that odd numbers of things read as less formal and so are more relaxing to be around, so plump for three or five cushions and you‘ll be plumping your way to relaxation nirvana. After a TV marathon snuggling under the blanket (or hiding, if like me you have been obsessively watching US zombie series The Walking Dead), tidying it up as if making the bed is probably the last thing anyone wants to do after slobbing out, but it is so worthwhile to make sure the sofa always welcomes you back after a hard day. www.zoehewettinteriors.co.uk

Wild about Gardens Even though we have had a mild winter it still takes it toll on our gardens. Getting a thorough tidy up, shrubs pruned, perennials cut back, soggy leaves scooped up tackling the tangled mess you never got round too last year makes all the difference. Giving the soil a bit if a turn and mulching over creates a tidy background for spring to arrive on. Pressure washing that dangerous slippery deck makes it safer and algae covered patios cleaner. If bigger projects are on your agenda now is a great time to set the ball rolling with design ideas

and clever solutions for all your needs. We can repair or replace your wind damaged fences, re-turf and sort drainage on your muddy lawns and replant your tired flower beds. Wild about gardens has grown over the last 20 years into a well established company with a reputation we are proud off.

’ve been thinking about finches. Charming little birds with cheerful plumage, we commonly get three species locally. The chaffinch with his rusty orange belly and face and white wing stripes sings an instructive little verse – it is said to sound like “H, E, B, R, E, W, S, HEBREWS!” In fact the sounds are more chittery but that phrase captures the rhythm. As in speech, the “E, W, S” bit speeds up and the “HEBREWS” is more emphatic and is sometimes followed by an extra flourish, sounding something like “don’tcha know!” It is a bright and cheery song, sung from the treetops where you will often see the male perched. They will feed in gardens but often prefer to poke about on the ground rather than on feeders. They are one of Britain’s commonest birds so you should have no trouble spotting them and hearing their busy little song. The male greenfinch has a mossy green head and body with a bold yellow wing stripe and flashes of yellow on wings

and tail. They have big fat beaks and to me they seem to have an air of seriousness about them unlike the chirpy chaffinch. They are in fact generally a shyer bird but they will come readily to feeders in gardens. The males sing a wheezy song, a sort of drawn out “sshheeeooooow”. Once you get your ear in it is very distinctive, honestly! They also have a more musical song of trills and twitters, recalling the canary to which they are closely related. Probably the most charming finch is the goldfinch and they even have a collective noun that recognises this – that group of goldfinches performing so acrobatically on your feeders is properly called a charm! They also fly about in small groups chatting to each other as they go in a very charming fashion: “tickalit tickalit”. They are rarely quiet. The song is a series of twitterings which includes variations on the tickalit call. They have a clown-like red face, black cap and white cheeks and a bright yellow stripe on their black and

white wings. The goldfinch is very fond of thistle and teasel seeds and we were delighted when they finally discovered our teasel patch. It is a good excuse to let these striking if rather thuggish plants get a hold in your garden. They are very sociable birds, not only moving around in “charms” in winter but also often breeding in small groups. Goldfinches are said to favour black niger seed, so fill up your feeders and tempt them into your garden. Unlike the other finches I have mentioned both male and female goldfinch sport those eye-catching colours and are identical. The female chaffinch and greenfinch are like paler versions of their male counterpart. The goldfinch with its optimistic-sounding chatter was once a very popular cage bird, but how much more pleasant to spot a charm of them flying into the garden than keeping a lonely one in a cage!

Joe’s Bakery, which has gained quite a reputation for its award-winning breads and pastries, is already experiencing a high demand for its delicious buns. Jane, owner of the bakery, says that Maundy Thursday is always the shop’s busiest day over the whole Easter period,

Joe’s Bakery will be open Good Friday (April 3), but closed on Easter Monday. In the build-up to Mothering Sunday, Mother’s Day buns will be available from March 14. In addition, the bakery will be involved in Mayfest, which is taking place in Gloucester Road Central on May 2. The festival ties in with owners Jane and Martin celebrating 25 years at the bakery. Joe’s Bakery won best local bakery in 2012 and best local cakes

Advertising Feature Supporting parents to help their child Being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs for which there is little preparation. Whilst there are many rewarding times, children and teenagers can easily wear their parents down with a range of behaviours, such as: constantly demanding; answering back; having outburst; bickering with siblings or a reluctance/inability to follow instructions. There may be conflict at home about morning or bedtime routines, homework, putting toys away and, for older children, coming home at the agreed time or helping out in the house; the list could be endless……. Mandy Stopard, a teacher and behaviour specialist, is offering a new service to parents who would like some support to gain a calmer home environment. She will work with parents to teach their children to behave more cooperatively and/or manage their emotions more effectively. Mandy has taught for 30 years, specialising in behaviour, and has latterly advised schools and parents on behaviour management and the development of children’s social and emotional skills. She has an additional specialist qualification in her field and has trained in a range of behaviour related issues. of Yogawest (www.yogawest.co.uk) As the seasons change, and the spring energy returns, the urge to move the body means we can practice more challenging poses on the yoga mat. Following last month’s pose (Triangle pose), here is the second pose in a 4-pose standing sequence, however like all the monthly poses, this can also be done on it’s own. Yoga Pose of the Month: Utthita Parsvakonasana (side angle pose) To develop strength and stamina, and tone the waist and stomach muscles, practice this posture. Medical benefits: Along with a sequence of standing poses, Utthita Parsvakonasana strengthens the back and relieves general backache. It also develops the chest and strengthens the legs. Include it in your practice to cure bronchitis, strengthen weak ankles, tight hamstrings, knee problems and

flat feet. Other health problems that benefit from this pose: constipation, acidity, indigestion and kidney problems. 1. Stand in TADASANA (Mountain Pose). 2. With an inhalation jump your feet to 4 ft. apart and swing your arms out to the side. Fully stretch your arms and legs and raise your chest. Take a couple of breaths. 3. Turn your left foot in and your right foot out. Holding your left legs firm, exhale and bend your right knee to form a square, so that your shin is upright and your thigh is parallel to the floor. Place your right hand on the floor to the outside of your right foot. 4. Extend your left arm up. Move your tailbone in. Press your right knee back to align it above your right ankle. 5. Anchor your left foot firmly to the floor and extend through your left hand. Feel the resulting stretch along your entire right side.

Practicing with your back to the wall can help you achieve a good pose: press your right knee against your right arm and roll your left shoulder back toward the wall. If you cannot easily reach the floor with your hand, place it on a block.

Unbelievably, John Todd of AMD Solicitors has now been working in law for over 50 years! John began work as an “articled clerk” (now called a ‘trainee solicitor’) on 27 November 1964 and so celebrated his golden anniversary of legal work at the end of 2014. Matters have improved somewhat since John’s first employment contract which was both unpaid and somewhat less stimulating than his work in later years! In the course of his career John has worked in divorce, family disputes, criminal law (including murder trials!) and civil litigation. For the last 40 years he has practised in Bristol, including sitting as a Deputy District Judge at local courts for over 10 years. I asked John to tell me about some of the highs and lows of his long career, and to share some of the lessons he has learned over the years.

DAWN May was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2012 – the same year she became a grandmother for the first time. Although little Luca is still too young to understand, Dawn is determined that her grandson will not be frightened by her symptoms. She has always been open with him and her family about the illness and its impact but she has discovered that some people find it difficult to share awareness with their nearest and dearest. Yet keeping quiet means that sometimes children may not realise what’s happening until their grandparent becomes quite scary. “I didn’t want that to happen to me and I wanted to help others who might be in the same situation so I decided to write some children’s books about Parkinson’s,” said Dawn, 62, who volunteers at a school in Horfield and lives in Clifton with her husband David, a professor of computer science. The result is a series of five gentle stories, beautifully

Granny Dawn shares stories illustrated by Phil Goss, which are being sold to raise money for the charity Parkinson’s UK. Dawn self-funded the first, Does it hurt, Granny? published in 2013 and crowdfunded the second, I’ll do it, Granny, which came out late last year. The others are written and will be published in due course. The books feature a little boy called Jake and show how he and his granny can still enjoy each other’s company, even on bad days. Dawn hopes people in Bishopston and Redland will buy the books for people they know with Parkinson’s or will consider purchasing them to give to local schools, in time for the charity’s Use Your Head awareness day for primary schools on April 24. Dawn, a former French teacher and student adviser, has given to talks in schools about the illness, which affects about 127,000 people in the UK. There is currently no cure, but drugs

and treatments are available to manage many of the symptoms. “I was 59 when I was diagnosed. I was troubled by my own prognosis but I was not in any pain. Usually people do not deteriorate too much in the first ten years or so,” she said. Dawn, who has three adult sons, is determined to continue enjoying her life in spite of the illness, which causes her some difficulty with walking and with fine motor skills such as doing up buttons. She enjoys cycling and is an active member of the Bristol branch of Parkinson’s UK. “There is a long gap between diagnosis and when things become frightening,” said Dawn. “ Luca has not noticed anything yet, but when he does

he will have heard the word Parkinson’s.” Dawn hopes local people will “buy and donate” books to schools through her website dawnmay.com (two books for £12) so that teachers can use them as a gentle introduction to the age-appropriate materials issued by Parkinson’s UK. Dog owners in Henleaze are coming under greater scrutiny because of an irresponsible few who fail to clear up after their pets. It has become a priority for Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership, and there are calls from councillors for Henleaze to become an action area in the coming year. The issue causes great offence both to non-dog owners and responsible owners. Councillor Clare Campion Smith told Henleaze and Westbury Voice: “Parents get very worried about it as it does have serious health implications. People have a right to walk safely without having to keep their eyes glued to the path in from of them.” Please let Clare or Councillor Glenise Morgan know of particular problems. Offers of help to Council officers who are trying to keep our neighbourhoods clean would be welcome – and you are not expected to clear up the mess!

Motivation Welcome back

Yesterday a member asked me how many members we had. I knew roughly, but printed off a report listing all the members and when they had last visited the gym. Given that it was the Monday after the term break and some members have trouble attending due to child care issues I was pleasantly surprised to find that 71.6% of our members had been in within the last week. According to the British Marketing Research Bureau only 27% of members regularly go to the gym. So why is Westbury Trym and Tone’s member attendance so high? What motivates us is of interest to many researchers and theorists. One theory that caught my eye when looking into motivation was self-determination theory. SDT identifies 3 innate needs: competence, relatedness and autonomy. How does what we do fit these needs? Competence- the ease of using our circuit as it automatically adjusts to your personal level of fitness. Relatedness – working alongside friendly, welcoming and supportive women with similar goals and needs. Autonomy – being encouraged to choose self-determined, achievable goals that fit within your lifestyle in a noncompetitive environment. Perhaps thinking on these points can help us all find workable solutions that keep us motivated with more ease and fluidity to whatever we want to achieve. Yours in fun and fitness,

News Children’s centre offers free support for families PROVIDING free support for families with children under the age of five is Filton Avenue Nursery School and Children’s Centre. The service, based in Horfield, reaches families living in the Henleaze area and beyond and helps parents through difficult times, providing one-to-one support and training sessions on a wide range of topics. Parents are able to meet other families with children of a similar age, and pick up ideas on how to improve the health and happiness of their own family. Staff members are also on hand to speak with - in confidentially - about particular issues. Different activities are held every day at the centre, such as baby clinics, ‘Stay and Play’ toddler sessions, and groups for parents with English as a second

language. The team also works in partnership with several groups already operating in the area. They also visit and support local toddler groups and are available at the Brynland Avenue Baby Clinic for advice and help. Trained staff can give baby massages and breast feeding support, as well as visit the family’s home. The centre has two lead teachers who support and provide free training for all the nurseries, pre-schools and reception class teachers in Bishopston. Despite the service being free of charge, the support team are calling on parents to fill out a registration form in order for them to continue to receive funding. Register online at www.

Each section needs a team for selling tickets or refreshments, and looking after audiences or adjudicators. More particularly, the Instrumental and Recorder Sections both need a new Secretary, and the Festival itself needs a new General Secretary to coordinate everyone else. Of course, the bigger the team, the more fun it all is! Anyone interested can see full details and contacts at www. bristolfestival.co.uk . And don’t forget the Prizewinners’

Henleaze & Westbury Library book review The Last Kings of Sark by Rosa Rankin-Gee

The last kings of Sark is a book of two halves. The first is a tender nostalgic story that takes place on the Isle of Sark and follows a summer in the life of three young characters. This section is told from the perspective of Jude, a recent

graduate who travels to the island to work as a tutor. Her pupil, Pip and his well off but dysfunctional family wrongly assumed Jude would be male which leads to an awkward start but the pair find a way of working together. The third and most vibrant character is Sofi a young Polish girl also working for the family as a cook. The island is a great background for this simple story of youth and love. In second section of the book we follow these three characters into a more fragmented adult world. We now gain their multiple points of view and follow them through several settings including Paris, Normandy and London. This is a tender love story, which is perfectly paced, beautifully

Raymond Carver chose 30 previously published works and seven new stories for this collection. Carver was a poet as well as a story writer and in his introduction he talks about his inclination toward brevity and intensity and of the

March, 2015 writers that were most important to him, Isaac Babel, Anton Chekhov, Frank O’connor and V.S Pritchett. This poetry or distillation of language to tell the tale is what I love most about Carvers writing. The story Distance is a great example and I would recommend skipping to this one first. It’s really something to see how much he gets out of so little and how the story keeps working on you long after it’s finished. Carver often finds a way of making the ordinary extraordinary. It’s tempting to gobble these stories up one after another like chocolates from a box. If you can resist try instead to savour them in small sips like you would a glass of fine wine.

Sport SPORTS stars have been sharing their success stories with local school children, as part of a pioneering project aimed at boosting positivity and happiness. Five hundred primary school kids from across Bristol – including those at Westbury-onTrym C of E Academy – attended day two of the ‘Brilliant Bristol’ programme at Bristol Rovers Memorial Stadium. The session - aimed at Year 5 pupils - was called the ‘Art of Being Brilliant’ and focused on setting ‘huge unbelievably great goals’ (HUGGs), as well as bouncing back from setbacks and becoming more resilient. The children, aged nine to 10, will take part in three days of training in total. Local sports personalities were invited along to share their experiences of goal setting, dedication and achieving success. Dan Blythe, a black sash in Kung Fu from GB Fit, spoke about Sharon Gill - a six times World Kickboxing Champion before leading a demonstration with the children. Pupils also took part in a question and answer session hosted by five Bristol Rovers

Golden Hill Sonics enjoy sporting fun and friendship We have been enjoying ourselves on the pitch and off it in recent weeks. Our teams have managed to play lots of matches (despite Bristols sub-zero temperatures and frequent rainstorms!) and we had a great time recently on a club trip to support the Bristol Flyers in their push for the play-offs. Our under 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s have continued to enjoy a good mix of fun training sessions and friendlies against other local clubs – we have recently played Ashley Down, Bishop Road and Sefton Park. Our older year groups have all started 2015 in great form – we pride ourselves on not overly focusing on results but it was interesting to note that our League teams (under 11s – under 18s) all won their matches on a recent weekend! The under 11s have enjoyed some fantastic matches against St. Nicholas, Bath City and Longwell Green, playing some genuinely entertaining football. Our under 12s have also been in great form, winning 8 matches on the trot in the Mid Glos League. Our under 13s and 14s are developing all the time, both in training sessions and in their Bristol Saturday Youth League fixtures – they have both enjoyed really competitive games against Bishopston recently. The under 15s and 16s have both been in fine form in recent weeks, playing good

football and showing impressive resilience – they have both moved up to 5th place in their respective Leagues. Our under 18s continue to do us proud in their first season as they are currently leading the Bristol Central League after a run of positive results.

We are all looking forward to the remainder of the season before we hand Golden Hill back to the cricketers and are looking forward to supporting Bristol Academy against Frankfurt in their Champions League Quarter-Final on March 21.
