Celebrations as St Peter’s shop re-opens From Page 1 charity shops the hospice has in Bristol, and the refurbishment has been great! “We’ve got a brand new colour scheme and the whole shop has been completely freshened up. We also created more space for additional stock including menswear and new lines so I’m so excited for our regular customers and new customers to come and see what we’ve got. “The support we receive from the local community is unbelievable and has been since we first opened, especially because of our proximity to the hospice in Brentry. We receive some fabulous donations and we generate vital funds every year to help support those with lifelimiting illnesses in the area. “With the extra stock and larger space we are looking for more volunteers to join our friendly team helping out with the tills, displays and sorting

NHS tops hustings agenda

Rabbit Awareness Week (Monday 9th May - 17th May 2015)

R

abbit awareness week takes place annually in May to help promote the welfare of this increasingly popular pet, which is also the aim of this month’s article! Rabbits are social animals and are best kept in pairs or small groups to enable them to express natural behaviour such as mutual grooming. They should not be kept with other species such as guinea pigs, as they have differing husbandry/ dietary needs and ways of communicating. Also bullying can occur. Rabbits are crepuscular which means they are most active at dawn and dusk, similar to their wild counterparts. They should be kept in the biggest hutch/run you can provide. The minimum dimensions should allow the rabbit to fully lie down and stretch out in all directions, be tall enough to allow them to sit up (and ideally stand) in without their ears touching the roof and long enough to make three continuous hops. The hutch should be ideally attached to an outside run or exercise area so that they have the opportunity to stretch their legs when they want to. It is important to check and groom your rabbit regularly in order to keep an eye out for flystrike which is especially common in the warm summer months (flies can be attracted to rabbits bottoms and lay eggs in this area, which hatch into maggots), as well as any other abnormalities. Fibre is crucial to rabbits,

and they have an interesting digestive system to cope with this. They produce two types of faeces, hard round droppings and softer shiny caecotrophs. In a healthy rabbit you shouldn’t see the latter, as caecotrophs are eaten by rabbits directly from their bottoms to allow them to digestive their food for a second time and extract as much nutrition as possible. An ideal rabbits diet should consist of large quantities of good quality hay and grass, with small amounts of complete rabbit pellet food and vegetables such as broccoli, kale and dandelions, with fresh water always available. Vaccination is important to keep your pet healthy and we recommend vaccinating annually against the fatal diseases, myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. This is advised for indoor rabbits as well as those living outdoors. We also recommend neutering too, which prevents unwanted pregnancies, reduces the risk of certain types of cancer and can also help with some behavioural issues (such as territory marking/spraying in males and nesting behaviours in females). For further information about rabbit awareness week and more advice on rabbit care, please visit www.rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk Also as part of rabbit awareness week, we are pleased to offer FREE rabbit health checks*, so give us a call on 01173355999 to book in! *additional charges apply for vaccinations and any advised medication/surgery

General Election candidates in Bristol North West had the NHS at the top of the agenda when they debated at a special hustings in the constituency. A lively crowd at the Greenway Centre in Southmead heard a wide range of views but with one common theme - all candidates backed a free health service at point of need. How that is achieved sparked some frank exchanges, with only the Greens and Trade Union and Socialist Collective candidates pledging removal of any private elements. Green candidate Justin Quinnell said: “We are completely against privatisation. We need to remove the profit motive.” Ann Lemon from TUSC said that unlike all the main parties they were committed to ending austerity and cuts. She said immigants were used as a scapegoat for the challenges in the NHS. Labour’s Darren Jones said the NHS needed to be at the core of a modern Britain and that clinical staff needed to be valued. For UKIP, Mike Frost said the biggest problem with the NHS was the changes which were brought in whenever a government changed and that it was too political Lib Dem candidate Claire Campion-Smith said the NHS should never be about the ability to pay but that it needed to be at the heart of politics. For the Conservatives, Charlotte Leslie said she would always fight for a free at point of need health service but said the biggest danger to that was the reluctance of some politicians to have a sensible debate. Audience members were able to have their say with some critical of the big pharmaceutical companies while another said people had become too used to having things for free. Others were critical of the Health and Social Care Act while a younger member of the audience urged panelists to ensure NHS workers were well treated by politicians.

Impact of shops How do the 47 St Peter’s charity shops impact on the Hospice itself and the work it does in the community? There is only one hospice serving Bristol – and it’s ours. So watch out for behind-the-scenes coverage in future issues of Henleaze & Westbury Voice. Apology: In last month’s issue of Henleaze & Westbury Voice, which was published after the dissolution of Parliament, we referred to one of the Parliamentary candidates as ‘MP’. This was an error for which we apologise.

T

he dominant event in May is obviously the election. It’s funny to hear people who know us commenting on our perceived political affiliations. This is usually based on us being professionals, independent business owners, Gloucester Road residents etc. Writing from a business point of view it’s fair to say the wonderful thing about the Gloucester Road is Independence, therefore to assume that the business owners vote as a block is misguided. I’ve had good interactions with Dan (the fish), who’s doing another session for our cubs, and Tom (the butcher) this month. I have no idea who they will vote for. But I do know that they give their heart and soul to the Gloucester Road, not just in their shops but in the unseen community work they do. These guys don’t have a

CSR (Corporate and Social Responsibility) department as the large companies do. They give their time and effort for free, for the community. I wonder if they feel supported by national policies. Having said that, both the Lib Dem and the Labour candidates have visited and requested our opinion as business owners and local residents. No other party has shown us any interest. The unbeatable offer Bringing the focus back to Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, our Crizal lens offer continues for one more month. We’re happy to give you a second complimentary pair of spectacle lenses when you buy a complete new pair of glasses. In my view, Crizal coatings are the best available. Please do ask the team why we recommend them over other lenses. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists we don’t believe in giving you a ‘spare’

pair of specs; every pair we dispense has a primary purpose, they aren’t for keeping in the back of a dusty cupboard. Your complimentary pair can be clear or sunglass prescription lenses and when combined with the fabulous frames we currently have in stock you can achieve two completely different yet stylish looks. Optometrist of the Year? By the time this article comes out we will know about Lynne’s Optometrist of the Year Award. Yes I’m biased, but I have worked with many of the country’s most qualified, specialised optometrists at Bristol and Manchester Eye Hospitals, I know the leading Independent practice owners, I’ve worked with the industry expert optometrists, yet I think there is no one who demonstrates the all-round excellence Lynne brings to eye care. Yes I’m very proud of my wife!

Our new website is proving hugely popular. The stand out feature is MySight, a system we have developed with our software provider to allow you to book appointments online 24/7. My hope is that our openness with prescriptions, price and the excellent service our team provide will combine to give you increased confidence in trusting us with your eye care and eye wear. News Look for Lee-Anne in the window display

For Lee-Anne Masters and her seven-year-old son Soul there was a special poignancy to the reopening of the St Peter’s Hospice shop in Henleaze. In October Lee-Anne’s husband Richard died at St Peter’s of lymphoma, a cancer which attacks the immune system. Aged 35, he had been under the care of the hospice for a year. Until Richard fell ill Lee-Anne (33) had been a professional singer, performing in cabaret and at special events including weddings. “I gave it all up to look after Richard,” she told Voice. “I have already done voluntary work of various sorts for St Peter’s and joined others in raising money too.” Last year she took part in a sponsored 10-mile midnight walk around Bristol in aid of St Peter’s and intends to do the same again

on July 11th. Recently she was runnerup with dancing partner Steve Hawkings in the St Peter’s Hospice ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ competition at the University of Bristol Students’ Union in Clifton. Lee-Anne and Soul return regularly to St Peter’s for music therapy. She is multi-talented, and the evidence is at the Henleaze shop for all to see. As part of the refurbishment some stunning fashion shots of her form part of the new window display. And that’s where we photographed her and Soul on the day of the re-opening. So don’t walk by without looking at Lee-Anne’s pictures in the window display, and of course drop in to donate or buy something for the hospice which now means so much to her and her son.

A meadow seeded by children from Badock’s Wood Primary School some years ago was one of the features of a Spring Wildflower Walk organised by the Friends of Badock’s Wood (FOBW). The 35 adults and children taking part saw cowslips in full flower in the meadow near the northern gateway to then wood. The walk was led by Tony Smith (Bristol Naturalists’ Society) and Tony West (FOBW) who introduced visitors to woodland flowers such as wild garlic, wood anemone and bluebells. Tony Smith talked about the way dandelions pollinate, resulting in over 400 different varieties in the UK.

Children are to thank for lovely wildflower meadow Tony West explained how the group had planted 2000 native bluebells and are managing the wood to reduce the number of ‘garden’ bluebells. The next guided walk will be Monday May 25th May when Tony Smith will be leading a Bugs and Butterflies Walk at 2.00 pm – meet near the northern gateway on Doncaster Road, Southmead. This will be part of the Bristol Walking Festival. Following last month’s unveiling by the Lord Mayor of the first carved bench in Badock’s Wood, more woodland sculptures will be being carved by Andy O’Neill during May. These cowslips in full flower are among the wildflowers seeded by children from Badock’s Wood Primary School. Henleaze walkers can enter the wood via the Lakewood Road entrance. Westbury residents can walk up Dark Lane or in by the David Lloyd Centre and walk across the top of the site to the

Henbury School students visit Iceland

Super season to remember for Sonics

A GROUP of teenagers from Henbury School have returned from a memorable trip to Iceland. The 14 GCSE geography students spent a year fundraising and preparing for the four-day visit, in which they saw boiling mud pools, hot springs, geysers and waterfalls, went to an ice cream factory, swam in a thermal outdoor pool – and had a couple of great snowball fights. The group also stopped at the base of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano and met one of the people who were directly affected by the eruption in 2010. Teacher Celia Murray said: “It was an unforgettable experience enjoyed by everyone, with snow, the swimming pool and the glacier walk being particular highlights. All of the students said did not want to come home at the end, feeling at home in Iceland and in awe of its spectacular scenery. Each and everyone of them were a credit to the school.”

Everyone at Golden Hill Sonics is really pleased for our under 18s – they have won the Bristol Central League in their first ever season! Most of the squad are under 17 and have been playing together since they were under 7s, training in Canford Park. It is a great achievement and thanks go to Laurie Hines and David Webb for all their efforts coaching the boys. Some year groups have away games left but the last home match of the season 2014/2015 has been played. Golden Hill Sonics is part of Golden Hill Sports, as is Bristol YMCA Cricket Club and it is now time for the cricketers to enjoy Golden Hill Sports ground until September. This has been our best ever season with eleven year groups for the first time – every year group has developed and had a lot of fun, from the under 7s through to our under 18s. We have enjoyed our trips to

support Bristol Flyers and Bristol Academy and are really pleased to see Bristol City promoted. We are hoping Bristol Rovers can make it back into the League as well to make it a memorable season for both red and blue Bristolians! Thankfully, we are lucky to have some fantastic people involved at Sonics – from our Groundsman, Kit Secretary and Chairman to our great coaches and Secretary. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of our football club. The coming weeks will be exciting with our under 11s hoping to get promoted in their first season in competitive football and our under 15s on course for an impressive finish in Avon Youth League Division 2. We are all looking forward to our annual presentation evening which is always a very entertaining occasion!

Education City School celebrates 425 Years On Friday 27 March the boys of Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital celebrated 425 years since it was founded by John Carr, at our annual Charter Day service at Bristol Cathedral. The service was attended by The Lord Mayor and dignitaries of the City. Headmaster, Mr Stephen Holliday, said: “Charter Day, the celebration of merchant John Carr’s founding of the City School in 1590, was a time to reflect on the visionary work of one of our great city philanthropists. The occasion is always a highlight of the year and it is great to celebrate this special occasion with so many Old Boys and friends of the school.” Mr David Bateson, retiring Deputy Headmaster and historian, said: “This Charter Day service again brought back many memories and we marked the significant occasion by inviting some of our Old Elizabethans. On display was the 1590 Charter, a wonderful illuminated

manuscript featuring the original Bluecoat boys and signed by Elizabeth I, our original patron (currently it is Elizabeth II).” QEH today may seem a far cry from the school for 18 orphans and destitute boys set up by philanthropic soap merchant John Carr over 400 years ago. The school now educates over 670 boys (including the Junior School) and has more wishing to join its ranks than ever before (demand was so strong in September that an extra class had to be created for Year 7).

Millie’s fence to make an impact at horse trials

Despite such dramatic changes over the centuries, the school still holds to its ‘hospice’ roots in providing places for bright boys in financial need through the continued endowments set up by its founder and other benefactors, including those after whom the three other school Houses are named: (William) Bird, (Samuel) Hartnell, (Lady Mary) Ramsay. The vision of John Carr and the school motto: ‘Whilst we have time, Let us do good’ is still adhered to strongly.

SCHOOLGIRL Millie Dawson, 12, has won a national competition to design a fence for the Badminton Horse Trials cross-country course. The year seven Redland High School pupil will now see her fence being jumped by leading riders at the international. The children’s design contest was organised by Sense, the charity chosen to be supported this year at Badminton. During the event, the organisation will be able to promote its work and raise much needed funds. Sense supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind – having both sight and hearing difficulties.

Education Labour vow on Bristol Free School Darren Jones, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Bristol North West, has confirmed that the Bristol Free School, which serves families in Henleaze and Westbury, will remain open if his party wins the General Election. While a Labour Government will not sanction any new free schools, it will continue to fund existing ones. "We are committed to ensuring that educational standards trump structures in

our schools,” Darren commented. “This is why we will ban unqualified teachers, protect the schools budget from cuts, cap class sizes and introduce regional standards commissioners to keep track of pupil attainment and progress. "Under the current Government we have seen the introduction of teachers teaching our children with no formal teaching qualifications while qualified teachers suffer from increasing workload and pressure, forcing many good quality teachers to leave the profession." As part of his Bristol Jobs Plan, Darren has launched the Bristol Schools Business Forum which brings pupils into contact with local employers to help young people understand what job opportunities exist locally and how their studies relate to future employability. "Many young people in Bristol don't know what types of jobs

exist here and so find it hard to picture what it is they're working towards and what they need to do to take advantage of those opportunities,” he said. Darren is a former pupil of Oasis Academy Brightstowe in Shirehampton (formally Portway

School) and if elected will be the first MP for Bristol North West to have been born and raised here. Today, he practises law as a technology solicitor at the Bristol office of a national law firm and has a special interest in renewable energy technologies.

Decision due on St Ursula’s plans Plans by St Ursula’s E-ACT Academy in Westbury-on-Trym for new primary school buildings with provision for 630 places were due to come before city planners on Wednesday (April 29th). The new buildings would be constructed behind the existing listed building in Brecon Road. The planning application includes a new access off Brecon Road and construction of a 34-place car park with associated access, courtyards, landscaping, fencing and recreational facilities. The decision should be known this month, and if permission is granted the redeveloped primary school at St Ursula’s is scheduled to open in September 2016.

News The passion behind Westbury’s fight to keep its library Nowhere in Bristol is there such passion and determination to keep a library open. The city council called a consultation meeting at the Coombe Dingle sports complex on April 15th to enable local people to give their views on the plan to shut Westbury-on-Trym Library. It is one of seven scheduled for closure, depriving 4,000 regular users of a service which is so highly valued by users of all ages. It could not have been more different at Coombe Dingle. As library supporters started arriving it became painfully clear that Westbury is in a different league. At least 250 squeezed into the upstairs meeting room in the pavilion, and for the great majority it meant 90 minutes or more of standing in hot, cramped conditions. People were stuck on the stairs because doorways were blocked, and there was overspill into an adjoining room where people found themselves largely trapped - struggling to see and hear what was happening. At the community meeting held three weeks earlier in the Methodist Church Hall in Westbury there had been a turnout of about 100, and concern was expressed at the age profile. Where were the young people with families? Had it been an inconvenient time for them? Did the library matter that much to them? For the Head of Libraries Kate Murray who faced a stream of incisive and passionately argued views, any doubts or

misunderstandings about the age profile of our library users would have been settled for good. Young families were strongly represented, and many brought their children – some in their pyjamas. “This was the 14th library consultation meeting we have held so far and the best attended,” Kate told Voice afterwards. “Every view expressed here tonight has been noted and what we will do on May 1st is to publish a summary of views received during the entire consultation process.” Councillor Geoff Gollop (Westbury-on-Trym) is unrelenting in his criticism of the Mayor’s plan to reduce the city’s library network of 28 sites. In thanking the audience for the turnout he said: “The truth is that unless a positive argument is put forward with alternatives, our library will close.” He warned against any complacency, explaining that the city council would almost certainly go ahead with closure plans “unless we fight very very hard.” He repeated his warning about Mayor Ferguson’s recent message on library closures. “All he has done is to delay closures. It means that we could lose our library in a year’s time in April 2016 rather than this coming autumn, and don’t be in any doubt - that remains the intention.” David Mayer, Chair of Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership, emphasised that the

Head of Libraries Kate Murray (left) pictured immediately after the consultation meeting at Coombe Dingle with Bristol City Council colleagues Julian Rush (Library Branches Manager) and Gemma Dando. neighbourhood partnership was “vehemently opposed to any closure” of Westbury library. Councillor Peter Abraham (Stoke Bishop) sad that Westbury library was also the local library for Stoke Bishop, and that opposition to the closure was as strong in his ward as in Westbury. “Be assured that your city councillors want to keep our libraries and won’t be fobbed off,” he said. “For the city council, closure is the easy option. We want to keep Westbury Library. We want a library facility. We pay for it in our Council Tax.” Later Councillor Gollop told Voice: “All 27 community libraries in Bristol have been classified. Group 1 are libraries

already delivering to a high service standard, Group 2 are libraries needing development. Libraries outside of Group 1 and 2 (which include Westbury) are recommended for closure. “Westbury library seems to fit well into Group 1 or 2 as it has over 4,000 active borrowers and, outside of the Central Library, is third in the table for items borrowed.” With the consultation ending on 30 June he is most anxious that people tell the Council their views. “The fundamental message to get across is that Westbury library should be ‘moved’ to Group 1 or 2,” he added. “Make sure you include your personal experience because nothing can beat your stories.”

How to show your support The campaign to save Westbury Library is growing fast because of the power of social media As many people as possible need to show their support so that Bristol City Council finally realise that closure for such a popular and well-used library is just unthinkable.

Yes, we’ve got a lot to smile about!

I

n a nutshell, National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign. National Smile Month promotes three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the British Dental Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people throughout the UK. With the help and

enthusiasm of those who are passionate about health and wellbeing, National Smile Month 2015 will see hundreds of events and activities up and down the UK educate and engage local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth. In 2015, the campaign will take place between May 18 and June 18, encourages all dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare, to join in and help us educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improves the quality of smiles all around the UK. But National Smile Month isn’t just about education and stressing the importance of a healthy mouth – the key to the success of the campaign is that we have lots fun doing it!

News Westbury’s summer forecast – mainly orange, yellow and pink Here’s our exclusive medium and long range forecast for Westbury-on-Trym. The summer and autumn will be mainly orange, yellow and pink with outbreaks of purple and silver mixed in with spells of white and lime green. We couldn’t have a more reliable source than Arthur Brice, the man who has covered our village with colour for well over three decades and has enabled Westbury to win Bristol in Bloom’s ‘Best Shopping Area’ award for the last 11 years. Following his win of the Lord Mayor’s Medal (reported last month) he has been reflecting - in a Voice interview - on a lifetime of growing for his own pleasure and that of thousandsof others. Arthur (77) is actually from Devon, the small hamlet of Morebath on the Edge

of Exmoor. From Bampton Secondary Modern School he gained one of two scholarships then awarded to Devon schoolboys for places at Dartington Horticultural College. He was 16 when he went to Dartington in 1954. Studies were interrupted in 1956 when he was called up for his two years’ national service with the Royal Army Medical Corps, returning to college in 1958 as Head of Students. Arthur gained his RHS Certificates and Dartington Diploma with Honours. He immediately gained his first job with Portsmouth Parks department where he rose swiftly to foreman and combined work with teaching gardening evening classes. 1967 was a big year - he married June and joined Hampshire County Council as

Senior District Foreman. Four years later he was appointed Area Manager with ‘The City and County of Bristol’, combining staff supervision with his role of parks emergency officer. Arthur, June and their son Kevin lived at 30 Great Brockeridge in Westbury where he won four Best Large Garden Awards in Bristol in Bloom competitions.

May, 2015

He joined Westbury-on-Trym Society as horticultural adviser in 1976, and in 1979 teamed up with the Society’s former Chairman Roger Smith to create eight tubs of flowers around the war memorial. Amazingly they are all still in use plus hanging baskets and displays all around Westbury thanks to the generous public contributions to the Westbury Society’s annual Flower Fund.

And equally amazingly, Arthur is as involved as ever. His retirement from Bristol City Council in 1989 created more time for voluntary work in our community and elsewhere in Bristol. “I hope to continue helping to make Westbury the best floral shopping centre in Bristol,” he said, “but I also like to devote time to passing knowledge on to future generations. “I now teach gardening to the children at St John’s School in Clifton, and absolutely love it.” Arthur’s wife died in 2001, and he subsequently left Great Brockeridge to live in Redland with his son Kevin, daughter-in-law and two teenage grandchildren. “It’s wonderful living with my family, but my heart’s still in Westbury where I have so many friends,” he added. These include the volunteers who look after Westbury’s flowers throughout the summer, and help raise the £6,000 needed every year to buy and

maintain the stock. Arthur has judged at the Westbury Flower Show for 15 years and many other shows. He has also lectured at a number of gardening clubs. And for good measure he shares his knowledge every month with readers of the Holy Trinity Parish Magazine in his column ‘You are nearer to God in the garden’. A conversation with Arthur spans so much more than space permits. At the end of the interview he was straight out from the coffee shop to those veteran flower pots to do a spot of dead-heading to our spring flowers. Under Arthur’s expert guidance, Westbury’s floral abundance continues to be in safe hands, and our lives are wonderfully illuminated as a result. Please don’t take them for granted. Pause and enjoy our displays, and think of the man who made it all possible.

Services for the elderly

No men at the gym

Local people are invited to Westbury Village Hall on May 11th to find out about what services are on offer for the elderly. Hosted by Bluebird Care, the three-hour event (1pm-4pm) will feature stalls and displays from a range of organisations who support older people. Tim Rowland-Jones, Managing Director of Bluebird Care (Bristol West), said: “Our free event will give older people a chance to meet others in similar situations and make new friends. “Also they will be able to discover the array of organisations we have in our area who are there to help.” Entertainment will be provided by professional pianist Jacquelyn Bevan with a performance by the Westbury Singers. For more information, contact Bluebird Care (Bristol West) on 0117 950 5855 or email bristolwest@bluebirdcare.co.uk

On average nearly three quarters of people who sign up for membership of gymnasiums don’t use them, and are left counting the cost. But there’s one in the heart of Westbury-on-Trym where clients simply pay for what they get, and possibly for what they don’t get. As the sign outside Westbury Trym and Tone says, they don’t get men, or mirrors, or contracts or appointments - a regime that owner Joline Dunn has successfully developed in the seven years since she founded the business. The gym occupies a space above the Cooperative in Canford Lane and is reached via a small doorway next to the supermarket. For our intrepid male reporter, the ‘No Men’ sign generated some nerves. He needn’t have worried because at the top of the stairs Joline was waiting with a welcoming cup of coffee.

She comes from Minnesota in the mid-west of the United States and has lived in the UK for 11 years. “The most important part of this business is making people feel welcome and comfortable,” she said. “I know that there are many ladies who simply feel more relaxed, more able to wear what they like and more able to enjoy their workout in the environment we have created. “It works for them and we have clients of all ages – about 150 in all and rising. The youngest is 18 and the oldest 86. “Obviously the majority are local but we do have ladies who come from other parts of Bristol and the surrounds.” The sessions at Trym and Tone are structured. Clients do a circuit of 10 resistance pieces of equipment and ‘change stations’ every 30 or 40 seconds. “Where they start simply depends on when they come

Joline Dunn, founder of Westbury Trym and Tone in. They just arrive and join the circuit at any stage,” Joline explained. This deceptively simple

News format has a great deal more point to it than pitching up at a gym and working in your comfort zone. “On a six-weekly timetable we measure weight, blood pressure, resting pulse and various body measurements. “The most significant changes usually occur in the first 6 to 12 weeks when we can see fat loss and muscle gain. “We can have 20 clients working out at a time, and almost always they are able to come in when it suits them and get going straight away. Queues are very rare indeed, and the ladies know they can talk to staff easily. The whole mood is very relaxed.” A birthday party is planned for May 31st, celebrating the gym’s seventh birthday. To half the population of Westbury, Trym and Tone will continue to be a well kept secret. To the other half, it offers a degree of freedom, both financially and socially, which the big names in the gym world simply can’t match.

W

ith the nil rate band frozen until the 2017/18 tax year, stock markets flourishing and house prices increasing in Westbury and surrounding areas, more and more local people will find that there will be a potential inheritance tax liability on their death. It therefore makes sense for such people to take early planning action. This is the first part of a new Learning Zone series covering all aspects of inheritance tax planning. In this piece, we consider some of the most fundamental and perhaps easiest ways to plan ahead - making use of your Inheritance Tax exemptions. • Annual exemption – each individual can give £3,000 per annum and also use the previous year’s exemption if not already used. • Small gift exemption – up to £250 can be given to any number of individuals (note the small gifts exemption cannot be combined with the annual exemption). • Normal expenditure out of income – gifts can be made from surplus taxable income on

a regular basis provided it doesn’t affect the donors standard of living. Exemptions are also available on the occasion of a marriage and where gifts are made to a UK registered charity and community amateur sports clubs. Planning in this area can sometimes be overlooked with few people using such exemptions to the full potential. Using the normal expenditure and annual exemptions through the payment of premiums under life assurance policies held in trust to meet the liability to IHT can be particularly effective. In future articles we will look at inheritance tax planning through lifetime gifts, trusts, will planning and the other inheritance tax reliefs available. Richard is a Chartered Financial Planner with a specialist interest in providing friendly, old fashioned face to face financial advice to local retirees. In particular, he specialises in inheritance tax and long-term care planning for the elderly.

News The latest mixed art exhibition from the flourishing ‘Reflections’ group of local artists opens on May 16th at The Bristol Guild in Park Street, Bristol. Now well established with six successful shows at the Guild, they will be showing an eclectic mix of artworks including paintings, prints, ceramics, glass, enamels and textiles. Christine Howes of Westbury Park is a relief printmaker and teacher whose work is inspired by wildlife and the environment. Jo Hyam of Clifton makes intricate machine-stitched pictures and 3-D vessels as well as vibrant watercolour or acrylic paintings. Her inspiration comes from colour itself, nature and world cultures. Denise Lonsdale of Henleaze divides her time between sculpture and enamelling. Currently her sculpture is inspired by giants of the animal kingdom, though at the other end of the scale she creates brilliantly coloured enamel jewellery. Simon Melican, also of

Huw Richards-Evans of Bishopston, who has joined the group this year, is a painter who draws on the legacy of a childhood spent roaming the landscape of the Pembrokeshire coast. Julia Rowe of Westbury-onTrym loves to experiment with

unusual applications of fused glass to create wall hangings, mirrors and freestanding pieces with abstract designs. Jenny Urquhart paints places which she loves using a variety of mediums to create pictures that capture the appeal of southwest coastal resorts as well as favourite views in and around Bristol. Julia Rowe, one of the founder members of ‘Reflections’ welcomes Huw Richards-Evans

to the group. “We are delighted that Huw has been able to join us between his other commitments and add yet another new dimension to this year’s exhibition,” she said. “He is a highly acclaimed artist whose paintings are collected internationally.” The Reflections Exhibition runs at the Bristol Guild from May 16th-June 6th (10am-5pm Mon-Sat).

At the age of 93, “Johnny” Johnson impressively stood straight-backed for 45 minutes to give a spellbinding talk about 617 Squadron and the daring action which changed the course of the Second World War. bouncing bomb and the training we had done we couldn’t help speculating that we might be attacking German battleships.” He was typically matterof-fact about the technical brilliance and bravery involved in destroying the Mohne and Eder dams and damaging the Sorpe. But the losses inflicted upon the squadron that night were told with passion and feeling. “Nineteen aircraft took off from Scampton that night, three turned back and of the remaining 16 only eight returned and 53 crew were killed. That was devastating for one squadron and one night’s operation.” Squadron Leader Johnson described his other lasting

passion – the Lancaster bomber in which he and his colleagues flew into and out of danger night after night. “”No wartime bomber aircraft equalled the Lancaster, and the noise of those four Merlin engines was like music. As long as they were playing, we were happy at our work. “I still enjoy watching and listening to it flying around. You can imagine my feelings when I recently heard a girl of nine say: ‘Daddy, listen to the music of those engines’.” The music of the organ at St Peter’s is safeguarded by fundraising, and “Johnny” Johnson’s memorable presentation will have helped the

cause significantly. His visit was arranged by church member Peter Watts – himself a former commercial airline pilot. “We are very grateful to “Johnny”, he said, “and we hope that the success of this event will provide the impetus to raise the additional funds needed to complete the vital repairs

required to our organ.” Church Treasurer David Fenna added: “We have faced a £12,500 bill for emergency repairs to the church organ, and “Johnny” Johnson’s appearance today has generated ticket sales worth over £1,000. It feels such a privilege to have this great man living in our community.”

of Yogawest (www.yogawest. co.uk) Following February and March’s poses, here is the third asana in a sequence of four, giving you a fuller understanding of how the standing poses fit together in a routine that you can practice in the morning or evening. The sequence will conclude next month. If you’ve missed any, email diana@ yogawest.co.uk and she will send you the full sequence. Happy practising.

Yoga Pose of the Month:

Uttanasana (standing forward bend) Regular practice of this posture brings flexibility through the pelvis and spine. It also helps relieve mental strain and physical tiredness. Medical benefits: Arthritis of the lower back can be relieved and even avoided altogether with regular practice of Uttanasana. Mild spinal deformity

can also be corrected, along with weak legs, knee problems and flat feet. Standing Forward Bend works to calm the brain and rest the heart. Practice it to help with memory loss, insomnia, nervous debility, breathlessness and palpitations. This pose also helps with acidity, anemia, asthma, constipation, diabetes, umbilical hernia indigestion, kidney problems menstrual disorders, nasal catarrh, and (after medical treatment and rest) pleurisy and pneumonia. 1. Stand in TADASANA (Mountain Pose). Place your hands on your hips. 2. Draw your knees and thighs up and holding your legs firm, exhale and bend forward from the hips. 3. Reach down and place your hands on the floor beside your feet and look up. Take one or two breaths.

4. With an exhalation, extend your trunk down completely and allow your head to release toward the floor. To release further forward, lift your inner thighs up into the pelvis and lift your sit bones. Allow your breath to become quiet and even. Hold for 20-30 seconds. practice note: If your hands do not yet reach the floor, either fold your arms and hold your elbows or place your hands on blocks. Those with slipped discs should not practice the final pose where the head down. See alternative pose done with the head to a chair. Charlotte Leslie (Conservative)

ELECTION 2015 Who to vote for in this year’s General Election is the question on many people’s lips. As residents prepare to go to the polls on May 7, Henleaze & Westbury Voice has asked each of the candidates for Bristol North West to tell us in their own words why they are standing and what they hope to achieve if elected as our MP. Contesting the seat, which covers Avonmouth, Henbury, Henleaze, Horfield, Kingsweston, Lockleaze, Southmead, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym, are Charlotte Leslie (Conservative), Darren Jones (Labour), Clare Campion-Smith (Lib Dem), Justin Quinnell (Green Party) and Michael Frost (UKIP).

Charlotte has lived in Bristol since she was two. As a teenager, she swam competitively, representing Bristol nationally, then studied Classics at Oxford University. She worked as a surf lifeguard in Cornwall, then in television (BBC), then at think-tank ‘Policy Exchange’ where she coauthored the original ‘pupil premium’ policy. Charlotte was elected MP for Bristol North West in 2010 and in 2013 was named as Backbencher of the Year for her work on patient safety in the NHS. She says: “Politics should be about getting good stuff done, locally and nationally. My motto? “Be the change you want to see.” “Locally, I helped get Henbury Station re-opening – but I want it part of a Loop Line before the ‘Filton Keynes’ development. “Bristol schools are on the rise and I helped start up the Bristol Free School. “We got Shire’s Lamplighters Pub re-opened, and I want to bring back a Shire-Pill Ferry. I got air-monitoring for Avonmouth, but I’m working for more improvements for the area. “Nationally, I have played a big part in changing the law for pubs: scrapping the beer duty escalator, and protections for community pubs. “I believe in ‘power to the people’. So I helped instigate teachers setting up their own ‘Royal College of Teaching’ to kick politics out of the classroom. “Finally, as a Bristol surgeon’s daughter, my passion is the NHS. I will never stop working to keep it always free at point of need, safe for patients and safe from those who put it at risk through party political game playing.”

Michael Frost

Justin Quinnell

I’m Michael Frost. I am married to Claire and we live in Stoke Bishop. I am a self employed national agent for a home improvement business. Being a member of Europe has always rankled with me with unelected bureaucrats controlling our destiny, making our laws, dictating to us about immigration and enforcing primacy over British law. I joined UKIP because it is a party that does not judge by class, privilege or social standing. Our choice is to make our own democratic decisions on how we live, by the people we elect. We are neither left or right. Just plain common sense. So is it left, right, or common sense to Have the right to deport those who want to harm and kill us. Have the right to make our own laws for our own people. Have the right to contol our own borders, so we can decide who can enter our country. Stop squandering billions in foreign aid when so much is needed at home. Stop spiteful legislation like the bedroom tax. Protect our jobs market. Promote British culture and prosecute cruel, barbaric procedures from other cultures. Ensure that British law always has primacy and is never compromised or watered down to facilitate foreign cultures. This is what I believe, and this is what I will fight for.

I grew up in Howard Road (and remember the Orpheus being one large screen!). I now live in Lockleaze with my wife, (from W-O-T) and two small children. I work as a freelance photographer and lecturer at universities throughout the UK.

Clare Campion-Smith

Darren Jones

I am standing for Parliament as a Liberal Democrat to promote our strong record of achievement both locally and nationally. Bristol North West has many strong communities, buzzing with ideas about their future. Henleaze and Westbury are such communities. There are also communities that feel cut off from the opportunities that a successful Bristol can offer. My vision includes sensitive economic development, high quality public transport (bus and rail), good education from 0 to 19, relevant skills that lead to local jobs and life-long learning opportunities, an excellent health service with physical and mental health being treated equally, more renewable energy generation so we can reach a zero carbon Britain in 2050, more housing and better insulated houses. The list goes on because Liberal Democrats have many detailed policies, created and agreed by party members, to build a fair, free and open society. Many voters are already wearied of the election and the battle of the competing soundbite and conflicting statistic. But the past record of a party is an important factor in assessing the future vision. In this Parliament we have made important changes to the taxation system shifting it in favour of the lowest paid and making the wealthy pay more, we have invested in education targeting the resources on children from poorer families to give them a better start in life. We have a clear credible plan to give the NHS the extra funding it needs and we remain committed to protecting civil liberties, especially in a digital age. This country needs a practical, liberal voice at its heart.

I’m running in this election because Bristol North West is my home. If I’m elected as the local MP I’ll be the first to have been born and raised here. Growing up in a council estate in Lawrence Weston in the 1980s showed me the hard side of inequality in this country. It showed me why education, good quality housing, our NHS and the dignity that comes with getting decent pay for a decent day’s work matters. It also showed me how important family and community is to the wellbeing of our city - one in which we celebrate diversity and our common endeavour to do well and get on in life. Working as a technology solicitor in renewable energies and advising start up businesses in Bristol has also taught me the importance of business and wealth creation; and why efficient public services that keep our work force educated and healthy are an integral part of a well functioning economy. Politics has the potential to change Britain for the better, and to prepare us for the opportunities of the future. I believe that being an MP has to be more than just petitions and photo opportunities and has to be about fighting for the things that really matter. You have the luxury of having a vote that really matters. Living in a marginal where the choice at this election is a Tory or Labour MP means that your vote counts. I hope that you’ll vote and vote Labour on Thursday 7th May. Photo courtesy of Jon Craig

News ‘Can I go anywhere now daddy?’ They came in their thousands from all points of the compass to find out what it was like to cycle around the Downs with no traffic to worry about. The first Cycle Sunday was an outstanding success with the 3km stretch from Ivywell Road to Ladies Mile closed to vehicles from 7am-12. Between 8 and 11am well over 2,000 cyclists of all ages were recorded entering the traffic-free zone. Vicki Cracknell of Henleaze, one of the organising team, was delighted with the support given to the event. “It was a family event in every respect,” she said. “There was virtually a 50/50 split between children and adults taking part. “The children were thoroughly enjoying their newfound freedom on the road, and of course in such a beautiful environment. Parents were clearly happy and relaxed - for once they could let the little ones cycle on ahead in complete safety.” One small boy said it all as went through the barrier: “Can I go anywhere now daddy” he shouted at the top of his voice. Under the provisions of the Clifton and Durdham Downs Act 1861 the Downs are administered by a Downs Committee appointed in equal numbers by the City Council and the Merchant Venturers. It has taken months of campaigning by north Bristol families to persuade the Downs Committee that the idea was worth trying.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Alastair Watson, and the Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers, Chris Curling, both took part in Cycle Sunday. Picture courtesy Chrissie Decker. It was celebrated by the committee’s two most senior members. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Alastair Watson, and the Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers, Chris Curling, both took to the saddle. “One of the lasting impressions was the silence in the traffic free zone,” Vicki continued. It makes you realise how attuned we are to traffic noise, and to be free of that in such a beautiful area of Bristol was perfect. “We are reporting back straight away to the Downs Committee and proposing that there should be two more similar events this year – the first in June. ”In the longer term our vision

Challenge, habit and gratitude – access to success

Westbury Trym and Tone is now celebrating its 7th anniversary. And our success is probably attributed to habit and just the right amount of challenge. It’s the habit of the lovely ladies who attend and the right amount of challenge they put their bodies through that give them great results in well-being, changes in body composition and kept us being able to pay the bills. The dedication of the staff to open the door has members never questioning whether we’ll be open and there to help. The challenge of the recession that has me not only reasserting my commitment to provide an atmosphere of welcoming support for all women but improved my management skills. It can be all too easy for us to think our efforts don’t have any impact when we don’t see the results we expect. However, if we were to stop making an effort we would see that our habits had maintained our previous state. We’re very grateful to all the ladies who have played a part in our success. Come celebrate with us on May 31st from 2 to 6 when we’ll be having bubbly and nibbles with some fashion fun and advice. During the event, the police were on hand to offer help and advice on marking and registering bikes

Surgery for snoring is usually regarded as a last resort, it causes unpleasant side effects or complications and has a limited effect that doesn’t last longer than one or two years. Strictly speaking, it’s all for the pupils of Westbury Park

Taking a bow – judges and competitors putting on the style before the show ‘Strictly’, generously helps with ‘Strictly’-related charities and formed part of the Westbury Park team. Apart from providing the capacity audience with a wonderful evening’s entertainment, Westbury Park’s own ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ was set to make a substantial contribution to the school play area funding. A special version of the show for pupils was being staged at their school on Sunday (April 26th), and more revenue will be

earned through sale of DVDs of the big night at Badminton. Mandy Webb, Chair of Westbury Park School Association, told Voice: “There is a wonderful sense of community at Westbury Park School and amazing support for fundraising events. “Heartfelt thanks go to everyone who dedicated so much time to make ‘Strictly Westbury Park’ a night to remember. The multi-talented parents at Westbury Park School staged their own ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event, raising money for development of the school’s outdoor play area. A night of glitz and glitter at Badminton School Hall, organised by Westbury Park School Association, reached its climax when John and Shaney Pauling’s quick step routine won the dance-off. The quality of the presentation and judging was obvious to all. The Brucie and Tess compere roles were filled by the BBC’s Jon Kay and Amanda Parr, and ‘Strictly’ celebrity star Sunetra Sarker swapped her dancing shoes for a judge’s seat. With her on the judging panel were Michele Webber of Bristol Dance Factory, David Rees, the former England rugby union player (now with Clifton RFC), and Headteacher John Jolliffe. Jon, Amanda, Sunetra, Michele and David have much in common. They are all Westbury Park parents. “I had a fabulous time doing ‘Strictly’,” said Casualty’s

ometimes sports injuries are just bad luck, or hit the ‘weekend warrior’ who overdoes it. And then there are risks with specific sports – cruciate knee ligaments in football, horse riders fracturing their collar bones. Sorry, don’t let that put you off! Less dramatically, we are all prone to problems at sites of cumulative wear and tear or misalignment, both of which occur with poor posture. The very best way to cultivate longterm resilience in our bodies is to pattern our posture and movement optimally in daily life. These good habits then protect us when more active: Smooth, well coordinated walking develops our glute and foot strength, conditioning the Achilles tendon and psoas for running. Naturally good bending action comes from the hip joints, not the back, achieving the

Postural re-education is a serious and effective investment in musculoskeletal health, whatever your sport. ersonal Space one to one exercise studio in Redland began helping local people to reach their health and fitness goals in May 2000, at that time becoming the first personal training studio in Bristol, and now offering Pilates, as well as more recently a physiotherapy service. The studio is spacious, however there is never more than two people using it at any one time, preserving the feeling of privacy and peace. Founders Stuart Dollery and Lisa Harvey are proud of the integrity of their team of trainers and therapist, all of whom have had many years of experience in their field. Over the years the needs of their clients have been truly diverse, but possibly one denominating factor amongst the clientele has been an aversion to the intimidating atmosphere and crowded feeling of big gyms. Having a one-to-one training session at Personal Space you are ensured of professional coaching in a supportive climate, where you are guided through activities specifically selected for your needs.

Sarah Powell, specialist nurse at Spire The Glen Hospital Bristol, gives her dos and don’ts to achieve the best outcome. DON’T let anyone pressurise you You should never feel coerced into a decision. Anybody can call themselves a Cosmetic Surgeon if they perform any cosmetic procedures as part of their job. DO find out what qualifications your surgeon has and from where Your surgeon should be fully qualified in their own country. In the UK they qualify first as a GP, then undergo extra training as a Plastic Surgeon. The most respected qualification in the UK is the FRCS Plastics. We're always told that this election is the most important in a generation but this one actually is; and because you live in an "ultra-marginal" constituency your vote really matters too. The Importance of Public Services Nationally, the Tories have been quite open about their wish to continue cuts and shrink the size of the state - reducing spending on public services to levels last seen before the NHS was even created. Meanwhile, Labour is clear that we will balance the books but that we'll do it fairly too. We are a party of Government. It is nonsense to claim that our aim is anything but wanting to lead a strong, successful British economy. Good quality, efficient public services aren't the enemy of the private sector but help to foster a well functioning economy in which we can all do well and get on in life. And in a constituency like ours where a significant number of children live in poverty, that's important for all of us. Businesses need educated, healthy, happy workers able to drive our economy forward. Being propublic services isn't anti-business or anti-wealth creation. Helping working parents with childcare, protecting the schools budget, investing in and modernising our NHS and building new affordable homes for our young people is the right thing to do. Pro-EU is Pro-Business Leaving Europe would cause significant damage to our economy, reduce educational opportunities, diminish our role in the World and would be a step backwards in a continually globalised World. We should be at the heart of a modern reformed Europe not threatening a referendum that creates instability for business, reducing investment in jobs and infrastructure. And we should tackle the exploitation of workers migrant or not - without adding credibility to the myth that mass migration is the cause of our problems.

Investing in our Environment for the Future The role of the European Union in helping to tackle climate change is clear. As a technology solicitor in Bristol with experience of working on renewable energy technologies, I am prorenewables and want a Labour Government at the UN Paris Convention on Climate Change in 2015. The Tories have been trying to run ahead with fracking, continue with their unsuccessful badger cull, want to re-introduce fox hunting and David Cameron famously asked for the "green cr*p" to stop. The choice at this election in Bristol North West is Labour or Tory. You have the power to decide. B r i s t o l N o r t h We s t i s a n u l t ra - m a r g i n a l constituency. The only outcome will be a Tory MP or a Labour MP and we're neck and neck. All of the other parties don't have enough support to win here this time. Every individual vote will matter. If you care about public services and our environment and want an MP that will fight for the things that really matter then I ask that you vote Labour on Thursday 7th May. Darren Jones is Labour's prospective MP for Bristol North West.

Not to mention teas, coffees and refreshments for customers wanting a sit down and chat. Everything on sale is produced or supplied by shareholders. They might be known as ‘stallholders’ at other markets, but the difference is that no-one has their own table. All goods are on sale together and shareholders are expected to take their turn in staffing the stalls and running the market. A 12.5% commission is taken from the selling price of goods to cover market running costs, including venue hire, and the rest is paid back to the shareholder. There has been a Country Market in Westbury for over 30 years. It is part of a national network but the only one of its kind in Bristol. The Westbury Market has about 35 producers and an average of 20 contribute produce each week. Market Manager Sue Sills explained: “We

Mouth watering produce at the Westbury brought to Country Market by (left to right) Pam Bunford, Anne Tipping, Sue Still (Market Manager) and Yawen Humphrys. have a very loyal customer base. People tend to come back every week, and the fact that we are non-profit making is probably important in building a following. “But don’t overlook the quality guarantee. All goods are genuinely home-produced and freshly prepared, and no constituents have been previously frozen.”

Sue is responsible for accepting produce for sale, ensuring al goods are of an acceptable standard and are packaged and labelled to Country Market stands. For more information, contact Sue on 0117 962 8306, or better still go along on a Friday for a coffee and a chat – when you will find the freshly baked goods quite irresistible! ADVERTISEMENT

the various characters and the houses they belong to. There are lots of characters and you soon find yourself routing for your favourites. The characterisations are skilfully made by George Martin, there are heroes from Winterfell and the House of Stark and villains aplenty in the house of Lannister. There are some good strong female characters – Cersei Lannister a thoroughly Game of Thrones nasty conniving Queen has by George R.R Martin much more about her than her inebriated, hunting loving King, This is a thrilling read for she will do anything to make anyone who likes to stretch sure her children receive what is their imagination and read of rightfully theirs. Night’s Watch men. You learn along with the Stark children as they look for suitable husbands, fight their own battles and build relationships with their siblings and pet direwolves. This is the first book in the ‘A song of Fire and Ice’ series and is a popular HBO TV series.

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

It is over 10 years since Kazuo Ishiguro’s last novel and it has been eagerly awaited. Ishiguro has written many times around the themes of loss, memories and love and the stories are often told by unreliable narrators. In each of his books he has explored the use of a genre as a backdrop in examining these human qualities. The remains of the day, an historical novel; Never let me go, a dystopian Science fiction; When we were orphans, a detective novel. This book is a fantasy novel featuring dragons and ogres in an Arthurian Saxon Britain. The two main characters Axl and Beatrice are an old married couple living in an underground ‘Hobbit-style’ community where their aged frailty apparently leads the working folk to push them literally to the edge. They decide they must leave and go in search of their long departed son who will provide them with a safe place in which to end their days together. Everyone, including Axl and Beatrice are suffering from amnesia and don’t seem able to retain the memory of what is going on from moment to moment. Axl and Beatrice only have vague memories of their son and where he went and so start their journey in both a real and metaphorical fog. During the journey they meet

Sir Gawain (Arthurian knight) and various other characters who each have their own quests to fulfil but really this story is about the enduring powerful love of the old couple for one another. This is brought to a test when they meet a boatman who ferries people to an island of the dead. Only if a couple can convince him of their devotion will he allow them to travel together. The amnesia and half told stories keep the reader in suspense and guessing at what has happened in the past to these characters. The buried giant of the title is the unresolved past. Those painful memories that have been buried so that vengeful thoughts and actions can be kept at bay; but can they? To the very end of the book there are unexpected twists and shocks. Not everyone will like the fantasy genre, I’m not really a fan, but this is a very well written book about very human strengths and frailties.

News Rotary Bristol and Southmead Hospital Charity raise £280,000 for prostate cancer research in the city New research into the treatment of prostate cancer in Bristol has been funded by thousands of runners who have taken part in Run for the Future for Southmead Hospital Charity. Over the past nine years £280,100 has been raised through the event to fund research at the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) at Southmead Hospital. Run for the Future was established in 2006 by Bristol Rotary Club. Last year, the final event raised £25,600 with more than 400 people taking part in the 5k run on the Downs in Clifton, Bristol. Three key projects at the BUI, in partnership with the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol, supported by Southmead Hospital Charity’s Prostate Cancer Appeal have received funding from Run for the Future: A project to look at genetic

markers of prostate cancers that can identify which cancers are more aggressive. This could enable clinicians to make better informed decisions about how they treat the prostate cancer. Researchers from the University of the West of England, the University of Liverpool and the BUI have developed a device using sensor technology that may help diagnose patients with signs of prostate cancer much earlier. The purchase of new minimally invasive surgical instruments for robotic prostatectomy surgery. David Gillatt, medical director of the BUI, said: “These projects have helped us to make great strides in our understanding of prostate cancer and how to treat it. “Bristol Rotarians have been huge supporters of our work and of the Prostate Cancer Appeal, helping to raise vital funding as well as raising awareness of the

disease. “Thank you to all the runners who have taken part in Run for the Future over the years. “But we still need your support to advance prostate cancer research and treatment here in Bristol so please continue to raise money for Southmead Hospital Charity’s Prostate Cancer Appeal.” Rotarian Ian Beattie, who is event manager for Run for the Future, which is marshalled by local Rotarians and Soroptimists, said: “Run for the Future has been a key event on Bristol’s running calendar for many years and has been a great family focused run. “It has been wonderful to see the thousands of people coming together every year to fight prostate cancer and Bristol Rotary Club would like to say a huge thank you to those people who have supported the event. “Now that the event will no longer be held we hope that

people will continue our legacy by supporting Southmead Hospital Charity’s Prostate Cancer Appeal.” Jane Ibbunson, Head of Fundraising for Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “Run for the Future has been a great success and I would like to add my personal thanks to Rotary, all of our participants and sponsors. “We still need to raise money for our Prostate Cancer Appeal so please continue your support whether that is running, cycling or you could also nominate us to be Charity of the Year at your workplace or sports club. “Southmead Hospital is home to one of the largest urological centres in the UK and we are justifiably proud of the research and patient treatment that is delivered.” You can find out more about Southmead Hospital Charity’s Prostate Cancer Appeal here www.southmeadhospitalcharity. org.uk

Care at Home – Recruitment Morning Saturday 16th May 9.30am-2pm

47 Henleaze Road, Bristol BS9 4JU The St Monica Trust provides high-quality, innovative care and support for older and disabled people. We recognise that in our changing society, as care needs increase, managing at home can become more and more difficult for many older people. We also understand that many older people wish to remain living in their own home for as long as possible. Since its launch in 2012, our Care at Home service is quite the success story and we are now looking to expand our team and the service that we provide in Henleaze and surrounding areas. If you are interested in delivering care to older people in their own homes, we would love to meet you! Why not come along to our recruitment morning to find out more and talk to the team. You can also find more details about the role of a Care at Home Worker on our website. We look forward to meeting you!

Tune in to your future cable needs housing stock, that often obstruct the signal. Serendipitously, Bishopston is home to its very own experts in home cinemas and ‘smart homes’. Owen Maddock from Connected was kind enough to share some clever tips for minimising cable mess and maximising userexperience! He said: “The latest 4K TVs will need new high speed HDMI cables compared to the original HDTV standard. So for important runs like from the cabinet to the main TV, try to leave an open route for future developments. For flatscreen TVs we often sink in a 44mm round pipe, so we can drop new cables in later.” He also points out that wifi coverage goes in a circle around the router and suggests it’s best to “put your internet router right in the middle of the house, not along the outside walls. There’s no point covering the road outside or the house next door, although the garden might be fun”. Here’s to a summer of working outside in the garden, then! here seems to be an explosion of redecoration and construction work happening across the city at the moment. If that includes your home, then now is probably the perfect opportunity to ‘future-proof’ it, by installing ample cables for both powering and controlling a vast array of electronic devices now, so that you don’t need to chase in and plaster over additional cables for further modcons in just a few years time. There are wifi options to consider as well, for anything from typical Internet access to controlling central heating, lighting and security systems from a mobile phone - all provided the internal network of the house is in good working order. Achieving this can be complicated and daunting, particularly with the high proportions of stone and steel used in much of Bristol’s

I’ve been involved with home improvements since my first job – in production management - so I knew I had the skills and the motivation to start Crystal Clear and make it a success. 2013 was a year of expansion and change, with Tony retiring from the business and Crystal Clear moving some of the team into the premises next door and extending the showroom in the existing building. In addition to the larger showroom, the company has become even more of a family business, with eight members of the Mizen family now part of the Crystal Clear team. We are really proud of our team and of the products and services we provide. As well as our people based at our Showroom there are many more out on the road measuring, delivering and fitting. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. Our repeat business, word of mouth and recommendations are so important to us – and all our team members know this. So, they always try to go above and beyond to make sure that every job we do is worthy of our company and of the home

What services do you provide locally?

We cover a wide area in the south west and are delighted to say we have fitted many windows, bi-fold doors and conservatories in the area. We specialise in a complete supply and fit service for all windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries and glazed roof solutions in PVCu, composite and aluminium for all styles and age of homes. We offer a 10-year guarantee and have experienced installation teams consisting of qualified project managers, builders, fitters and service technicians. We’ll handle everything from sale to installation even building works if needed, to making sure everything is finished off perfectly in your home.

What is the best part of running your business?

Henleaze is a real community with a bustling high street and so much development going on – all of which is great from a business and personal point of view.

What makes your business different from other companies?

There are lots of Double Glazing companies out there, so it’s really important for us to stand out. We pride ourselves on many things, most importantly: We’re local. We know the area. We – and all of our staff – live in the area, so we can react to our customers’ needs quickly and effectively. Being local also means we have a stake in this

area. We really care about how our work impacts the community, towns and areas we operate in. We’re family-owned and as such care deeply about the service we provide to our customers. We’re customer focused and professional. When we started the business we put ourselves in the shoes of our customers and really thought about what they needed – not what we needed! We hope this has given us the edge when it comes to delivering the best experience out there. We review this regularly to stay at the top of our game; working with customers and their feedback to continually improve our service. We are ‘BM Trada’ certified and a Founder Member of the DGCOS (Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme) – offering all our customers 100% Peace of Mind. Innovation. We are always looking for new ways to improve the products we offer and are keen to offer our customers leading edge products. We have an extensive range and can offer one of the largest choices of windows and finishes in the area. Our range includes the latest double glazed PVCu sliding sash windows, which have all the

advantages of modern windows with the classic look of traditional timber sash windows and timberlook composite windows, which offer a stunning, maintenancefree alternative to traditional wood windows. Bespoke. We know that every home is different, so we custom design conservatories and orangeries to the specifications and requirements of the home owner and of course our skilled and experienced team can provide advice and guidance wherever necessary to get the best result.

What are your plans for the future? We are always focusing on the customer, so will continue to build our business with them in mind – by offering new solutions; keeping ahead of the game when it comes to new technology; keeping up with design; and of course offering the top levels of customer service people have come to expect from us.
