300 rugby players ‘did not die for BOGOFs’ THE fight is not yet over for campaigners, who believe that building a supermarket on the Rovers’ Memorial Ground is a “travesty”. A petition has been set up to put pressure on Sainsbury’s to withdraw their redevelopment plan, which is funding Bristol Rovers’ move to a new stadium in Frenchay. Campaigners say that the Memorial Ground is an important part of the city’s heritage, and that a superstore is not the right way to remember the three-hundred Bristol rugby players who died in the First World War. TRASHorfield, who believed

that the council acted unlawfully in granting the supermarket planning permission, lost their legal challenge at the end of March. The group then confirmed that the case would not be taken to the Court of Appeal as they were unable to raise the money necessary to test Judge Hickinbottom’s decision. The judge ruled that the council had followed the proper planning process, however, TRASH still believes that the judgement is “flawed”. Jamie Carstairs, who set up the petition to protect the Memorial Ground, said: “It is a

However, Bristol Rovers chairman, Nick Higgs, has confirmed that the development has received the support of the former rugby club and British Legion.

He said: “TRASH lost their appeal against Sainsbury’s and now they’re just trying to find another angle to stop the development.” He added: “If they believe that the whole of the site is the war memorial, then how come a third of it was allowed to be sold off for housing? “They’ve got to move on - I’m just becoming a bit tired of it all.”

Cllr Willingham stands down to pursue career

AFTER four years as Bishopston councillor, David Willingham is stepping down to spend more time focusing on pursuing his career and becoming a chartered engineer. Over the four years in his role David has achieved a significant amount, from being involved in high profile campaigns to lobbying Parliament. He has been instrumental in securing a vast sum for the Bishopston ward - believed to be around £200,000 - alongside former Lib Dem councillor, Bev Knott. David recently obtained £25,000 from construction group, Galiford Try, to spend on schools within 1km of the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club re-development. He also played an important role in securing £110,000 needed for the renewal of the play area on Horfield Common, which is now under construction, as well as helping to acquire Village

Green status for Wellington Hill playing field. David has been at the forefront of several local campaigns, including lobbying for a new station at Ashley Hill, and campaigning against the Sainsbury’s development on the Memorial Ground. Additionally, he was involved in pressuring Bristol mayor George Ferguson to halt plans to introduce a Residents’ Parking Zone in Bishopston, which received strong opposition from the area. On a more national scale, with the National Autistic Society, David lobbied Parliament for increased support for people with autism - a life-long condition which he was diagnosed with about five years ago. “It’s about trying to make people more aware about autism, as it’s a very hidden disability. If you get the right ear you can make things change.” Besides David’s more

BISHOPSTON residents will be able to put their questions to candidates standing in the local elections at a Question Time-style debate being held on May 19. The event will be hosted by Sustainable Bishopston, and supported by the Bishopston Society. Questions from voters can be submitted in advance or on the evening. Candidates will be given three minutes to introduce themselves to the audience, and candidates not present will be given the opportunity to have a statement read on their behalf. Voters will then be able to ask them about local and city-wide issues that matter to residents. Last year, the voter turnout for Bishopston was almost 34 percent - higher than the average turnout from across the city, which was 27.5 percent. According to organisers, most people do not vote in local elections and many of those who do will decide based on party allegiance, leaflet campaigns or the local press. Nominations are still open, and the list of candidates will be announced on April 25. Elections will take place on May 22. Residents can double-check which ward they belong to by visiting: www.bristol.gov.uk/WardFinder. The event will be held on May 19 at St Michael’s Church Hall in Gloucester Road, starting 7.30pm. publicised efforts, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes, he says. From helping people interact with local services, to assisting people settle neighbour disputes. Playing a part in the civic life of Bristol has been a particular highlight for David, especially being involved in the Rush Sunday and Legal Sunday annual ceremonies, and the Remembrance Sunday service. David was also fortunate enough to take part in the Erasmus programme, which allows local representatives from across the EU to meet and share ideas with one another. “By visiting Brussels and the Hague, and talking to other representatives, I realised that we have so much shared history and far more in common than what divides us. We all want the same thing.” David believes that the next councillor needs to be someone who is passionate about Bishopston, and he advises them to “stand up for Gloucester Road”. “It’s a jewel in Bristol’s crown and people need to treasure it. But remember it’s a complicated street, which is used for walking, cycling, commuting, buses,

as well as being a residential, shopping area. “If you focus on one aspect to the detriment of others you risk getting it wrong - you need to look at the overall picture. “With all decisions being made by the mayor, it’s important that whoever is next

representative to the people. Hold the council to account, and don’t justify their actions if you don’t agree - you’re in a position to change them.”

The list of candidates standing in May’s local election is not released until April 24. Please check the Bishopston Voice website (www. bishopstonvoice.co.uk) after this date to see who is standing.

Come and join our ‘After 8 Club’! Here at the Animal Health Centre we are proud to offer a great new service whereby you can bring your senior pet (dog or cat) in for a thorough health check from one of our Veterinary Nurses. As with all of us, as our pets age, things just don’t work as well as they used to. For example heart and kidney function isn’t as good, brain function and metabolism slows, muscles become weaker and there is a loss of bone density. This may cause an animal to show signs such as exercise intolerance, weight gain/loss, stiff joints, drinking more than usual and more frequent, sometimes inappropriate, urination, or perhaps your pet just isn’t keeping up with self grooming. This can be distressing for an owner as it can be hard to see that your faithful companion simply isn’t as young as they used to be. Here we understand the importance of your pet and want to do everything we can to make the ageing process more comfortable for both you and them. These days there is so much more we can do for older pets, we can recommend supplements, special diets and when needed, medication to help aid the older pet, making their twilight years happy, comfortable and in some cases even increasing their overall life expectancy. Our After 8 club is aimed at dogs and cats over eight years of age and is a good opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have about your pet, whilst giving them a thorough MOT at the same time! This consult will include the following for only £10: • Blood pressure check • Heart, respiratory and temperature check

• Dental examination • Urinalysis • Weight check • Advice on ageing pets • Thorough overall examination • Check and clip claws. • Check coat condition and clip out any matts. These checks are incredibly helpful in older pets so that we can get an idea of what is going on, on the inside, even if they are not showing outward signs of ageing, helping us to detect any disease processes early on. These results are also useful so that we can detect any significant changes later on. Please remember to bring a urine sample with you, this can be stored in a clean jam jar or ideally urine pots/cat urine collection kits are available free of charge from reception. If you own a dog or cat over eight years of age, then please phone the surgery today to book your appointment and we can get started!

Gloucester Road secures £250k investment CELEBRATIONS are being had after a ballot to make Gloucester Road a Business Improvement District (BID) has been successful. Businesses running from Colston's Girls' School to the bottom of Pigsty Hill were eligible to vote in the ballot, which - if successful would see £250,000 invested into Gloucester Road over the next five years. The ballot was won with a majority of 55% voting "yes". The turn-out was "relatively high" with 54% of all the businesses affected voting. The UK average voter turn-out in BID ballots is approximately 41%. Traders had until March 20 to vote. George Grace, BID advisor, and founder of TownCentred Consultancy, said: "Naturally we are very pleased with being a third higher than the average, as representation was a key part of our aims." The BID will be funded by a 2% levy on each business in the designated area, with the average business paying £3.85 per week. The total BID fund will be over £50,000 per year to be spent exclusively in the Gloucester Road area on marketing, events and promotion; making the area clean, green, accessible and attractive; lowering business costs; and giving independent traders a voice. The first installment of money is expected around mid-July. The Gloucester Road Traders Association, which instigated the BID, is in the process of setting up a project management and administration team to run the scheme to ensure money is protected and well spent. This can be made up of volunteers, or part-time personnel. Samantha Mant, vice-chair of the GRTA, said: "The BID plea is 'please get involved' - the more involved, the better. "This is going to be the start of something really quite exciting - over the next couple of years, we're going to see some significant improvements." She added: "Improving waste collection is a big priority, and we're aiming to get a regular, effective waste collection service at an affordable cost. We think making the streets look better is really quite important." BIDs were first introduced in the UK as part of a pilot scheme in 2005. Since then, more than 180 have been successfully established, contributing £300 million of funding back into their towns and cities. BIDs can last a maximum of five years, after which time another ballot must be held to see if the businesses involved wish to continue.

We’re buying locally, why don’t you? Lynne and I have just come back from a weekend at the Optician Awards. Our team were finalists for Team of the Year. Unfortunately we didn’t win, losing out to Specsavers Teignmouth. However I’m full of pride for our team. We were the only Independent Opticians nominated. We took the whole team and we all found it hugely inspiring and motivating. We are all aiming higher and want to win next year. To do this we will work even more closely with our local community, making a visit to us a delightful experience. Thank you especially to the industry suppliers who supported us especially Essilor and the many of you who wrote testimonials about our team. We changed major lens supplier at the start of this year as we wanted a more personal service. Essilor are based up the Gloucester Road (well A38) on the outskirts of Bristol and are a major success story for regional manufacturing. We’ve benefitted from meeting their team face to face, including their laboratory technicians, the marketing team through to their M.D. Consequently if Becky, Emma or Sara phone up the lab they can discuss individual lens choices for particular frames, specifically for you. Practically that translates to the best looking eye wear every time. One particularly impressive fact is that their great employees stay: they are obviously looked after and I can see why. They are great people. This May we are launching a “Graphite Green” transitions lens. The green lens colour enhanced with Prevencia protection is at once both cool and classic. Therefore I’m going to pair it with a very cool William Morris frame for a classic sunglass look with a twist. William Morris is a British design success story. This summer’s collection is another step up. We’re proud to work very closely with the William Morris designers to showcase their most stylish frames. They are vibrant, daring, bold, packed with colour and bags of attitude, but aren’t for everybody. That’s the benefit of our EyeStyle service. We’ll tell you if it meets the look you desire. We will have new collections every month.

Where do our lenses come from? We believe in keeping things local... That’s why when you buy a pair of glasses from us, your lenses come from a Bristol based company called Essilor Ltd just down the road... (well about 15 miles, but who’s counting!).

Combined with our friendly team and fantastic range of frames for all budgets means we can provide a truly independent and bespoke service.

So why not pop in and talk to us about your requirements today.

Unemployment toll falls by 986 FIGURES published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the number of unemployment claimants in Bristol West has fallen by almost 1,000. The number of unemployed people living in Bristol West, which includes Bishopston and Redland, is now 3,041 - 986 less claimants compared to March last year. Statistics gathered at the end of last year revealed that the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Bristol had fallen to its lowest level since February 2009. Unemployment has also fallen across the country to a rate of 6.9 percent - the lowest level in five years. Wages are also growing faster than inflation. Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West and Communities Minister, said: “Thanks to the Liberal Democrats in the coalition government, growth is back and unemployment continues to fall. In the last year we have seen a consistent decline in unemployment in my constituency in Bristol West. “With earnings now rising in line with prices and employment rising, today’s figures reinforce the fact that this recovery would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in government.”

Children’s cafe set up with parents in mind BISHOPSTON is now home to a new "uber" child-friendly cafe and party venue, that places a strong emphasis on quality, healthy food. Located just off Bishop Road, Playful Cafe was set up by local parents, Kate and Nico Ferrentino. Parents to five children, the couple wanted to open a cafe where children can not only be welcomed and entertained, but where parents can relax. After many years in the catering industry, Kate and Nico pride themselves of serving home cooked, and healthy food, which is locally sourced and free range where possible. Playful Cafe, which accommodates for children aged 0 to 4-years-old, has a separate

play area in the annexe, as well as a parents' kitchen, where parents can use the microwave, fridge and bottle warmers; a baby lounge, equipped with comfy sofas for mothers wishing to breastfeed; and a role play lounge, with fancy-dress costumes. The cafe also offers occasional free singing and story time sessions, as well as provides a place for regular classes and support groups for local parents and the community. At weekends Playful Cafe can be hired out for children’s parties. The cafe does not have an admittance charge, but will operate a cover fee of £1 a head. dedicated to educating schools, students and parents about the ever-evolving online world. Unique Voice has already visited Bedminster Down and Orchard School on Filton Road. The concert featured students from Fairfield High School, who have been trained by the initiative as “e-Safety Champions”. The pupils also toured primary schools in the area, spreading their knowledge about internet safety to younger students. Highlights of the show included dancing, singing and beat poetry. The concert concluded with an e-Safety pledge where Fairfield High School, the Early Help team, e-Safety Champions, Unique Voice and local primary schools promised to stay “connected”. Twleve-year-old, e-Safety Champion Jenny Taylor said: “I spoke to the head of year about getting involved because I felt strongly about cyber-bullying. “It’s definitely built my confidence and has taught me more about being safe online. It’s fun to do something on stage and put the message across to people - I now feel more confident both on stage and online.” Unique Voice believes that through training children to become educators and giving them more responsibility, they can build their self-esteem. Company director of Unique Voice, Krystal Keeley, said: “To help young people stay safe online, we believe you need to connect with them and listen to their experiences. From there we can move forward and equip them with the tools to protect and empower themselves and each other.” Caroline Donald, from the Early Help team, said: “E-Safety is an issue we encounter constantly when working with children and families. “We are delighted to support and promote such an innovative project which enables children and young people to become more informed and proactive about using the internet safely, whilst continuing to enjoy the opportunities that the internet provides. She added: “The internet is an incredible tool - it just needs to be used safely.”

A school with strong focus on individual achievement Clevedon School is recognised for providing ‘student focused’ educational experiences, placing its students at the heart of every aspect of school life. Our school is based upon traditional values with a forwardthinking vision. The school has a strong and positive ethos where relationships between students and staff are built around clear values and mutual respect. Every member of the community is encouraged to ‘belong’ through a sense of contribution, responsibility, ownership and confidence which is seen in the pride our students have for their school. The Ofsted inspection in October 2011, judged the school overall to be ‘outstanding’. The inspection team noted the high expectations for all students and the strong belief that everyone can succeed. The school has seen a significant increase in student performance over recent years and GCSE and A Level results are well above the national average. The school offers students individualised pathways through the curriculum to ensure they have the appropriate subject package to support them to the next stage of their education. With information from the weather station, girls will be able to find out more about the climate and how the rate of cosmic showers is affected by changes in atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature." The observatory and weather station will be funded with £5000 from the Barry Theo Jones Trust and £3000 from the Friends of Red Maids’, with the remaining amount from a parent and the school’s science department. It will be constructed within the school grounds over the summer term.

Initiative helps young engineers forge ahead BUDDING engineers from Fairfield High School were given the chance to learn from industry experts. The Horfield school was selected by Airbus to be involved in Tomorrow’s Engineers, an initiative led by Engineering UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering to highlight career opportunities. The event involved a show about engineering around the world, followed by workshops led by people working in the industry. Follow-up work and activities, including an event for parents, are included in the programme, which is running in 40 schools in the south west as part of moves to encourage children to pursue science, technology and maths (STEM) subjects. Fairfield High School was STEM school of the year in 2012.

Chris Long, from the school, said: “This provides a fantastic opportunity for all our Year 8 students and those in Year 9 who have opted to take engineering for GCSE to find out more about what is involved from people with real-life experience.”

Bristol landmarks are a selling point A YOUNG enterprise company from Colston's Girls' School has launched a selection of merchandise, including tote bags and tea towels, showcasing Bristol's famous landmarks. The unique design on both items, created by BeBristol, was provided by creative agency Orca Design, based on Cheltenham Road. The image depicts some of Bristol’s iconic landmarks, including the Suspension Bridge, Brunel's ss Great Britain and the Concorde in a modern illustrative style. BeBristol plans to release other products, such as a mug, in the near future. The Young Enterprise scheme involves 16 to 18-year-olds giving up their free time to develop and sell products, allowing students to gain practical experience in the world of business. BeBristol was created with the mission to celebrate Bristol’s creative and unique history. The tea towels and tote bags are on sale via Facebook (www. facebook.com/bebristol.bebristol) and in selected retailers, including 7th Sea on Cheltenham Road and Love From Random on Park Street.

Healthy eathing and healthy lifestyles are the themes of an ambitious free of charge festival being run in May by a group of Bristol schools. The With One Voice Partnership – Orchard School Bristol, Filton Avenue Infant and Junior Schools, Upper Horfield Community School and Fonthill Primary – are preparing for the Staying Alive Festival. It is being organised to highlight to families in north Bristol the many fantastic lifestyle opportunities in the community with two flagship events - a food festival at Orchard School on Saturday, May 10th followed by a Get Active Festival at Filton Leisure Centre the following Saturday, May 17, in conjunction with Filton Town Council. The schools are also promoting issues around health to improve life expectancy which varies greatly across different parts of the city. A highlight of the food festival will be an attempt to set a World Record for the most diverse fruit salad with weird and wonderful fruits brought from across the globe. This event will see the communities of Horfield, Southmead, Lockleaze and Filton coming together in a celebration of healthy and tasty eating, including demonstrations and stalls featuring food from round the world, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the schools and communities. To showcase the event, children from the different schools will be designing special

MUM It is fantastic to see the construction of the new play park at Horfield Common finally under way. Weather permitting, the new play park should be completed by the end of May, if not before. With not only a brand new and better play park, but one that is also suitable for slightly older children as well as little ones, it should attract more families and become a great focal point for the local community. The old play park was there when I was a child so a brand new play park is long overdue! While on the subject of Horfield Common, I wanted to write about the APE Project, a free family based outdoor adventure play session which

bishopstonvoice

takes place on the common every Thursday 3.30 – 5.30pm during term time. APE was formed on the basis that children want and need outdoor play and provides free outdoor activities for children aged 8-15 (though slightly younger and slightly older children are welcomed too). If you fancy taking your children along, you can just turn up; there is no need to book. If you are a parent of children aged 6 – 16, you may be interested in Unique Voice, a small creative and educational performing arts company which has just launched a new Performing Arts Factory in Bishopston. Classes will be held every Saturday 10am – 1pm at St Michael’s Church Hall on Gloucester Road and activities this term include movement, junk percussion, design, puppetry and physical theatre. For readers who are parents to young children aged 0-4, I wanted to feature the new Playful Café in my column this month. Playful Café is situated on Fenton Road, Bishopston and boasts plenty of space, toys, activities, dressing-up costumes and fun galore for

little ones. It has a £1 per head entry fee so is very affordable and also offers very tasty lunches and snacks which are reasonably priced too. Plus, the cakes at Playful Café are absolutely delicious! And I should know, cake connoisseur that I am ;) Finishing on a personal note, I was really proud to have recently been awarded the Bristol & Somerset Venus Award for Best Online Business

for both of my websites. The award night was hosted by the lovely Paulina from Heart Breakfast and celebrated many Bristol business women who had some really inspirational stories. Hope that you have a wonderful May! Bishopston Mum www.bishopstonmum.com www.bristolmum.com

really safe way of getting around. This’ll encourage lots more cyclists to come out, bringing their children with them, which will help cut the scourge of the Gloucester Road air pollution and heavy traffic. It’s good to know too that if there’s no record of all the near misses I have daily with angry and impatient drivers, they can’t be near misses at all, but figments of my imagination. I would caution Barry on urging the spending of £400,000 on stopping pavement cycling before coming up with statistics to prove it happens, but if he can show me them, I’d support him wholeheartedly. In the meantime, I’m sure he’d willingly join with me in supporting spending the money encouraging motorists to make Gloucester Road a much nicer place by leaving their cars behind and travelling by bike. I was so pleased he implied concerns about health and safety. I’m sure he’d be the first to celebrate motorists’ loss of obesity as they took to their bikes, and be just as confused as I that motorists, who drive complex pieces of heavy machinery at great speed, aren’t

RPZ scheme as planned won’t work I believe Residents’ Parking Zones are likely to be extended to areas around Gloucester Road, if a council viability report supports this and the council cabinet votes on it. I support RPZs in theory. I believe they can reduce congestion. They can also improve air quality and tackle carbon emissions, at least until cars start running on alternative fuels. Unfortunately, I believe current RPZ plans will not work. There is a strong possibility that the residents’ parking team would propose double yellow lines on one side of narrower residential streets. Probably about a third of residential streets in Bishopston, Ashley Down and Lower Horfield seem to fit the residents’ parking team’s definition of narrow. Double yellow lines down one

side of these streets would leave about half a parking space per household. Many families live on these streets. Most households have no off road parking option. Other councils have allowed a small area for partly parking on the pavement, so long as disabled access is maintained. I am surprised the council seem reluctant to propose this for areas around Gloucester Road, given that the area necessary for partial pavement parking would probably be less than a recycling box. If any readers think my assessment of the residents’ parking team’s approach is farfetched, please contact them, as I have. Also consider the council’s current record. For example, Colston’s Primary is a two form entry school with no car park in the Cotham South RPZ. It has only two parking permits. Cotham School, a large, successful secondary school, has none. Parking is plentiful outside both of the schools. In Clifton Village, restaurants, pubs, cafes, and other traders are concerned that visitors will only be given one hour parking time. The council

bishopstonvoice

has previously tried to propose double yellow lines for whole sides of residential streets near Gloucester Road. Bristol City Council’s report of the Residents’ Parking Scheme’s cross party working group, March 18 2014, appears to have concerns that: 1. Residents have been insufficiently consulted on inner ring RPZs 2. Lack of hard evidence has been presented to support the RPZ policy 3. Public transport improvements may not be adequate. If there isn’t enough provision for the public transport, this could force people on bikes who do not feel safe on them, or mean longer journey times and less time with loved ones. I voted for the local Lib Dem councillor and Green councillor when they were elected. Unfortunately I have been unable to get their position on narrow streets in RPZs at the time of writing. Now is the time to make their position clear. I have learnt the Greens are broadly in favour of the principle of RPZ though. Locally, Labour seems largely against RPZs, at least in their

follow us on Twitter @bishopstonvoice

current form. I would remind residents they can comment on RPZ proposals in the inner ring, even past consultation deadlines. The most recent consultation is for Clifton Village. Inner ring RPZs may increase commuter parking around Gloucester Road. As well as concerns about narrow streets, I would be interested to know if a study has been done on the impact of RPZ on poorer areas outside of the RPZs. For me inequality in Bristol is a greater issue than transport.

17

Many of Bristol’s poorer areas are outside the proposed RPZs. D.W Have you got strong views about what's happening in Bishopston and Redland? Learn to combat climate change BISHOPSTON and Redland residents will be more clued up about ways they can equip their homes to deal with climate change, thanks to a successful funding bid by Sustainable Bishopston. The funding from the council’s Active Travel grant will be used to develop a trail guide to inform people on ways to make their homes more resistant to climate change, and to illustrate a variety of technologies already

being used by local residents which will save energy, deal with varying temperatures, enhance wildlife, and cut flood risk. Martin Fodor, Sustainable Bishopston representative, said: “With an old, attractive neighbourhood like ours, full of heritage and character, there are challenges to deal with when adapting our homes to save energy, reduce flood risk, deal with overheating or loss of wildlife.”

Adaptations which have already been made to homes in Bishopston and Redland include solar power for electricity and heating water, sun pipes to provide light indoors, external wall insulation, living or green roofs to increase biodiversity and soak up rainwater, and permeable paving in driveways to reduce flood risk. The project is in conjunction with Sustainable Redland, the Bishopston Society, Redland and Cotham Amenity Society, and Bristol Green Doors. The grant is to prepare a detailed guide with notes downloadable from the group’s website and printed for distribution locally. To pilot some of the features, which are all visible from the road, the group is planning two guided trails in May, during the “Our Neighbourhood” festival, offering a choice of routes by foot or bicycle around the area. Guides will be on hand to answer any questions and encourage discussion, whilst

touring green projects in the area and exploring how the techniques used by local homes fit the neighbourhood. Routes will be 90 minutes each, suited to either a medium walking pace, or a gentle cycle ride. Good footwear, or a bicycle is required. Meet at the Sustainable Bishopston Noticeboard at 171 Gloucester Rd on May 11 at 1.30pm for 2pm departure. Register at info@ sustainablebishopston.org.uk.

EDUCATING youngsters on sexism in society is a top priority for a group of Bishopston residents. By engaging with teenagers through workshops, TIGER (Teaching Individuals Gender Equality and Respect) aims to challenge sexist bullying, gender stereotypes and negative images of men and women in the media. The workers co-operative group was founded in the latter part of 2012 by Natalie Bennett, who felt that young people were particularly susceptible to negative portrayals of men and women. The team of five, three of which live in St Andrews, have worked in partnership with established charities such as EACH (Educational Action Challenging Homophobia) and Envision - a group aiming to challenge the stereotype of ‘the youth’ as apathetic and disengaged, as part of the government funded National Citizen Service scheme. The group has recently been working with several Bristol

Challenging stereotypes schools, including City Academy in Redfield, aiming to help them comply with the Equality Act 2010. Alex Greenwood, who is a part of the workers co-op, said: “The response has been really positive so far. Not many of [the youth] we have worked with have questioned how the media portrays men and women before, so it’s been very satisfying that we have been able to make them question what they see in the media, to have debate, and to create conclusions. “Next time they see an advert or watch a music video, they will question how men are women are represented.” Blurred Lines - a song by Robin Thicke, regularly played on music channels, and the radio - is a particular example of how women are portrayed negatively through sexist imagery, says Alex. Inspired by initiatives such as the Everyday Sexism Project, TIGER believes that

sexism in the media has proved detrimental to both women and men in everyday life. There is still a significant gender pay gap, with a TUC analysis of official figures confirming women working full-time earn almost £5,000 a year less than men. Female representation on the cabinet is also low, with only three out of 27 being women. Also, up to three million women each year, across the UK, experience

gender-related violence. The group also recognises how suicide rates in men have increased, as has the number of men diagnosed with eating disorders. TIGER hopes to generate more funding for the project, and aims to work with more schools across Bristol, promoting equality and anti-bullying. To find out more about TIGER, visit: www.facebook. com/tigerbristol.

News FRIENDS of Horfield Common (FOHC) are calling on the community to get involved with securing the future of its muchloved venue, the Ardagh. The idea of applying for a transfer, which will involve the council handing over responsibility of the centre to a community group, was put forward by FOHC at a recent meeting held at the Quakers' Meeting House on Gloucester Road. They say it is "essential" if the community wants to see the site improve and come back to life. A Community Asset Transfer is the leasing of properties by the council to voluntary and community organisations often at a reduced or minimal rent. FOHC say that by allowing interested parties to manage the Ardagh, it will help empower the local community, giving them more responsibility. Bristol City Council will still own the property, but day-to-day management will be handed over to a community group who can show they have the ability to run a project for local benefit. The council has responded

bishopstonvoice

www.bishopstonvoice.co.uk

May, 2014

Help us save the Ardagh centre "positively" to the idea, offering "full support" to any interested party. Sam Thomson, chair of FOHC, said: "The Ardagh is an integral part of the common and is very valuable. If we don't do anything, we could lose it. "The more people we can get involved, the more chance we have of moving it forward from just being an idea. She added: "It will be hard work, and it will take determination, but it will be worth it." However, the council need to first improve the standard of the Ardagh in order to facilitate the transfer. The meeting about applying for an asset transfer is subsequent to the council's recent controversial closure and re-opening of the building after a safety officer deemed the building's fire warning system "inadequate". FOHC believe that the Ardagh has fallen through the

cracks over the past few decades, and has not been seen as a priority by the council. But the council has responded robustly, saying that there has been no history of neglect. Various groups use the building on a regular basis, including users of the bowling green and tennis courts, a weekly toddler group, and a support group for disabled children. Over the next 18 months, FOHC hope to establish a community group who could potentially manage the centre. A business plan will then be created, with ideas about generating long-term funding for the Ardagh. Similar projects have included the St Werburghs Community Centre, which received £1 million funding after securing an asset

transfer. Ideas for the Ardagh include a flexible meeting place, a community café and bar, and a multi-use sports and leisure facility. Jobs will be created, and more social events will be held, FOHC say. FOHC welcome anyone who would like to become part of this process. To get involved in the project, whether it is to be kept informed of plans, to contribute as a special interest group, or to join a steering group, email: friendsofhorfieldcommon1@ gmail.com or telephone: 0117 9426580.

Yes, we’ve got a lot to smile about!

National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign. National Smile Month promotes three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste n Cut down on sugary foods and drinks n Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. n Let’s be honest, they’re quite simple to follow, but so many people STILL don’t do these basic things. Some adults brush for less than two minutes a day! Some even do it for less than ONE minute! That’s why National Smile Month’s role in improving oral health is so important. It gives everybody the opportunity to explore their current oral health routine and do something that will improve it. It doesn’t matter if your teeth are in pristine condition or if you have poor oral health, National Smile Month is for everyone. The aim of National Smile Month which takes place between May 19th and June 19th is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the British Dental Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people throughout the UK.

Zetland Road Dental Practice Zetland Road Dental Practice is a private practice that offers the full range of services from general dentistry to specialised treatments such as dental

implants in a comfortable, friendly and reassuring environment. The majority of the staff have been at the practice for over 15 years with their highly experienced hygienist, Claire Gazzard, taking a particular interest in the treatment and prevention of gum disease. Far more teeth are actually lost due to the effects of gum disease than tooth decay and many people are unaware of having problems as gum disease causes little or no discomfort. The good news is that it is very preventable and even when the process is established it can be treated but sadly it is often left too late before help is sought. With a recent change in regulations it is now possible for patients to receive treatment from a hygienist without seeing a dentist first or being registered at the practice. This means that if your practice does not offer the services of a dental hygienist you can come and see Claire directly for a one-off appointment or a more complex treatment

plan without it affecting your registration at your own dental practice.

Big Apple influences new speakeasy bar INSPIRED by the prohibition era is new kid on the block, The Bootlegger - a family-run cocktail bar and kitchen boasting American-themed food and drink, 1920s music and a highend service. Nestled by the arches on Cheltenham Road, Bishopston’s latest addition received an overwhelming turnout at its launch on April 17. The Bootlegger was set up by brothers Gary and Lee Miller, Michala (Gary’s wife), and Richard Naden. With Lee’s 25-years experience working in restaurants and bars across the globe, Gary and Richard’s 12-years experience in business management, and Michala’s experience teaching business and economics, the team wanted to establish something unique and poignant in the area. Having lived in New York for four years, Lee recognised that there was a growing taste for prohibition, speakeasy-type bars, and felt that something similar would work well in Bristol. During the day, customers can feast on an array of American-inspired dishes, and in the evening, be taken back in time with music resonating the 1920s. Music includes swing, jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, with live performances three nights a week from local musicians. Gary said: “We’ve always dreamed about opening our own place. We wanted to create something that’s accessible to the local community and focus on using local independent suppliers, which is one of the

Pair swing dancing to The Bootlegger’s live jazz band reasons we chose this road. “We aim to source the majority of our food from surrounding traders, as well as using other services, such as Orca, who we used for our branding.” Secretive and rustic, its interior reflects an era of time which saw speakeasies - illegal boozing bars - rise in popularity due to a nationwide ban across America on the sale, production,

importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Gary added: “On a visit to America, we were blown over by the high level of customer service we received, and we wanted The Bootlegger to provide something very similar. “We don’t just want to be known for great food and live music, we also want to be recognised for our high standard of service.”

A BUSINESS coined by two local women is going from strength to strength - and now they have won two awards to prove it. Anne-Louise Perez and Imogen McIntosh, founders of YourStreet Ltd, a gift card initiative for independent retailers, won two categories New Business of the Year and Innovation - at the Bristol and Bath Women in Business 2014 awards. The event, which took place on April 2, pays tribute to women whose determination and and success are helping drive Bristol and Bath's economy. The women posted on their website: "We had a fabulous evening. The event was full of inspirational women and a fantastic celebration of what you can do if you really want something enough. "We would like to thank Lloyds Bank for sponsoring our table so that we could take along the friends, family and [mentor] Stephen Melanophy (BITC) who have all been so supportive of us on our journey."

Gift cards pair celebrate The Innovation award was sponsored by Ashfords, and the New Business of the Year award was sponsored by HSBC Commercial Banking. Debbie Hosking, regional head of business banking at HSBC, said: "YourStreet is a relatively young business, but one that is making its mark. "Anne-Louise and Imogen have done extremely well in the two years they have been up and running, and are a great example of someone seeing a gap in the market, doing something to fill it and making a success of the venture. "There is no reason why that success shouldn't continue. I am looking forward to working with them in the coming months and years." The idea for YourStreet Ltd came about when Anne-Louise and Imogen were searching for a friend's birthday gift along Gloucester Road, and they realised there was no such thing

as a gift card for independent shops. YourStreet Ltd initially launched on Gloucester Road last summer, and can now be used in shops and for services city-wide, including Wessex buses. The women are now

working on expanding into Bath. The initiative has also won Creative England funding and Starter for 10 - a competition providing business support for creative small and medium enterprises who are looking to grow.

News Sarah’s story brings hope to others SARAH Defrates was initially diagnosed with cyclothymia - a mild form of bipolar - five years ago. In 2011, after a re-diagnosis, Sarah was unfairly dismissed from her job as a receptionist, following incidents of namecalling by her boss. Two years on, Sarah’s life has been turned around by Gloucester Road business, Westbury Inks. Being offered the position as marketing manager has given Sarah a new lease of life - and now, she wants to help others who have been affected by the disorder, through sharing her own story. Sarah, 46, first realised that she had bipolar after visiting a friend’s at Christmas. After being compared to someone with the disorder by her friend’s son, she decided to do research into the symptoms and could relate to what she read. Her behaviour was also picked up on by an ex-boyfriend, who said she was like “four seasons in one day”. She also recalls her brother recognising her hyperactive behaviour when she was eight, referring to her as a “hyper bunny”. Sarah noticed that her behaviour worsened in 2008, when she became bankrupt and had to look after her two teenage boys on her own. Cyclothymia is identified by a history of mood swings, ranging from mild depression to emotional highs. Mood swings tend to be fairly frequent, as well as persistent. Avoiding any medication, Sarah has turned to self-help in order to keep her bipolar under

control. Sarah, from Westbury Park, goes for an hour walk around the Downs each morning, and has a bath before bed to help her relax. She has also undergone intensive psychotherapy, as well receiving daily support from friends and family. Convinced that she would never find work again due to her bipolar, Sarah was overjoyed when Westbury Inks offered her a job at the beginning of April. “Westbury Inks has really helped me, I love it to bits there,” she said. “Stuart [director] has been amazingly understanding and very supportive, and I’ve really appreciated being allowed to use my own initiative. I’ve created a good connection with customers, and I really feel like I’m part of the community - I feel more alive again working here, and it’s wonderful to be accepted for being me.” To avoid overexertion, Sarah works 16 hours a week. She says that sleep is essential in her daily life, and she has learnt to ask for help when she needs it. Sarah has also been dedicating her spare time to writing a book about her life. She said: “I want to help others through telling people about my experience with bipolar - I like to think I’m being a voice for the voiceless. I feel like helping other people out with bipolar is my calling. “I want to celebrate my bipolar - it makes me creative. It has allowed me to make more sense of life.” Having been called names such as “fruit bat” at her previous job, Sarah believes a greater understanding is essential for

challenging stigmas attached to mental health. “I think employers should look on mental health websites more, like Rethink and Mind, to gain more of an awareness about mental health,” she added. “In the workplace, everyone should be looked at as individuals, everyone is unique and has different qualities to bring to a job - employers need that

balance within the workplace.” Sarah has spoken openly about her bipolar on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio Bristol, and has has also appeared on ITV news. To find out more about Sarah’s journey, and to join her mailing list to receive advance notification of her book release, visit: www. sarahdefrates.com.

Starfish hydrotherapy pool appeal still needs £250,000 WORK on a new £1.4 million hydrotherapy pool is well underway at Claremont School in Redland - but fundraisers are working hard to secure the final quarter of a million needed for the project. The Starfish Pool Appeal, which aims to build and maintain a hydrotherapy swimming pool for children with disabilities, was established by ‘Friends of Claremont School’, a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers. The project was ceremonially launched in December when Bristol mayor George Ferguson was invited to dig a spade into the ground. Children at Claremont School range from two to 19-years-old, most having severe disabilities. The school believes that a warm, on-site pool is essential for relieving pain experienced by children with complex needs. Headteacher, Alison Ewins, said: “Without hydrotherapy pupils can suffer contractures in limbs and spine where their bodies become stiff. Warm water relaxes tight muscles, allowing joints to be moved without pain. It enables pupils to move independently, free from adult support. And an added bonus is that splashing about is also great fun.” To find out more about the project, or to contribute the pool, visit: www.starfishpoolappeal.org.uk, or to contribute fundraising ideas, email: tina.cheesley@gmail.com or robgorelangton@ gmailcom.

Putting district’s unique features on map LOCALS will have the opportunity to take part in a project which aims to protect and enhance Bishopston's heritage. The 'Our Place' survey, organised by the Bishopston Society, involves volunteers exploring their neighbourhood and plotting important landmarks and features on a map using basic symbols. The project will be led by Pete Insole, the chief archaeology officer at Bristol City Council, and the creator and developer of the Bristol history interactive website, 'Know Your Place'. The completed survey can be used to influence planning processes for new developments, ensuring it responds to the area's context. Pete has already successfully led similar 'Our Place' surveys in other Bristol neighbourhoods, including Westbury and Lockleaze.

Pete said: "The focus of the project is to identify what makes Bishopston recognisable and different. Through doing the survey, volunteers can notice things in their local environment which have never been spotted before." 'Our Place' was designed by the council's Bristol Historic Environment Record, and funded by English Heritage, to enable communities to identify and map the character of their local area. At the end of each mapping event a document, defining the area's character, is produced. The documents are then published on the Design Bristol website - a forum for anyone involved or interested in achieving quality place-making in Bristol. The Bishopston Society is hoping that the appraisal of Gloucester Road will lead to the 'Our Place’ project expanding to other areas of Bishopston.

Pete Insole speaking with residents about Our Place project at recent Bishopston Society meeting Pete will be running a morning session on May 7, starting from 10am at the Quakers' Meeting House on

Gloucester Road, and finishing at 1pm. To help with the survey, contact Pete at: pete.insole@ bristol.gov.uk.

News Trust us with your care

PUTTING the individual's needs at the heart of its work, whilst building a trusting relationship with its clients is what Accolade Support and Care does best. Established by Bishopston resident, Sylwia Latacz, and Patricia VanHelsdingen, the care service was set up in response to the demand for person-centred supervision, delivered in the client’s homes. The service uses the latest technology, coupled with transparent monitoring practices. Sylwia and Patricia, both qualified person-centred planning facilitators, have between them 18 years of hands-on experience in the care sector. They have helped clients with learning disabilities, brain injuries, mental health challenges, dementia and autism. Their core belief is caring for vulnerable people, by putting the individual and their support network at the very centre of the care provided. The women believe that a positive involvement of the family and friends when creating plans with the individual is important. Sylwia said: "Our assessment and support is not just around the physical and medical needs of the individual. We look at the emotional well-being, meaningful occupation, education and anything that the individual desires to achieve. "It’s your life. It’s your future. It’s your care. That’s our starting point – getting to know and understand you. We offer a comprehensive plan that will empower you to have more control and make better choices for the way forward." As well as being highly committed to their clients’ well-being, they have the same philosophy towards their staff, recognising their hard work and contribution to the organisation.

Neighbourhood fun week LOCALS are gearing up for a fun-filled week of community activities across Bishopston, Cotham and Redland. The 'Our Neighbourhood' festival, coordinated by the BCR Neighbourhood Partnership, boasts many events run by local groups and businesses. The week aims to encourage community engagement, as well as provide people with an opportunity to socialise, and to learn about what their neighbourhood has to offer. Organisers are also aiming to increase awareness of the neighbourhood partnership and other community groups. The BCR Neighbourhood Partnership is run by residents for local people, in partnership with the council and local police. The festival, running from May 3-11, will include the Whiteladies Farmers

Market, the Redland May Fair, Gloucester Road Central May Fest, the Golden Hill Community Garden spring fair, as well as a host of other events. The "Super Forum" public meeting - the festival's headline event - will be taking place on Saturday May 10. A festival programme is available online, at: www. bcrnp.org.uk/festival/festivalprogramme-2014/ All local residents, workers and students are invited. Most events and activities are offered free of charge.

lined curtains can look and feel during the more summery months. It also reminds me of a long standing joke (read feud) between interior designers and architects regarding window treatments. Essentially we designers love froofing up their fenestration with fringing, folds and frills, while architects cringe at our spoiling of their masterpieces, especially now that many new buildings are sufficiently well insulated so as not to even need fancy draft excluders. A sweeping generalisation of course, humorously illustrated by own mayor George Ferguson during a debate about the

relationship between the two professions at a British Institute of Interior Design event in Bristol a few years ago. One of the slides he presented depicted a satirical cartoonist’s sketch of a sleek, contemporary building with clean lines, lots of glass, and one window decorated (or defaced depending on your viewpoint) with totally over the top meringue-y curtains, much to the architect’s visible disappointment! Whilst I’m not one for changing home furnishings with every passing trend, seasonal alterations for reasons of fluctuating light and warmth levels seem perfectly reasonable. So perhaps consider undressing and unburdening your windows from their wintery cloaking, and use the opportunity to treat them to a good clean before stowing away until Autumn. Try a lighter, unlined textile with a

be spending too much time thinking about is what to wear. Of course you still want to look good, but you don’t want to be stuck indoors with your head in your wardrobe when you could be outdoors embracing all that the gorgeous weather has to offer. My clients often tell me that they find spring/summer styling more difficult than during the cooler months of autumn/winter, as the comfort and security of layering up is no longer required and they often feel that wearing less is actually harder than wearing more! So I thought that this issue, I’d show you how you can easily and quickly look fantastic in under 10 minutes. The key to easy breezy summer styling is to keep it simple and you can’t get more fuss free than a dress. Available in short, long, midi, mini, loose, fitted, plain and patterned styles - there really is one for every body type, occasion and purse size. They can be dressed up with a pair of heels and summer wedges or down with an embellished pair of flats/ sandals or if you like to be more edgy, a great pair of ankle boots. If you’re heading to a festival this year, they even work with wellies! This one foolproof item will instantly save you time and effort getting ready in the morning because it’s the only thing you

AVID ramblers will have the opportunity to join in with specialist walks around the local area, as part of the Bristol Walking Festival. The largest of its kind in an urban area, the festival - running from April 26 to May 26 - is designed to appeal to regular and not-so-regular walkers of all ages. The varied programme features around 150 guided walks including new opportunities this year for speed dating, business networking and learning about the suffragettes. Councillor Barbara Janke, assistant mayor for health, said: “We have a varied and dynamic programme of walks that should appeal to anyone who wants to step out, meet people and learn something new. There is enough to appeal to regular walkers who want a challenge and those who want to improve their fitness levels.” Evidence shows that regular walking reduces the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and helps to counter depression and maintain mental wellbeing.

Be a step ahead for Bristol’s Walking Festival The 2014 festival follows on from the success of last year’s week-long event, which saw hundreds of people taking part. Feedback revealed a demand for a longer festival, so this year’s programme is running over four weeks with double the number of walks and participating organisations. Booking in advance is recommended as many of the walks have limited numbers. More information and the brochure for the festival is available at: www. bristolwalkingfestival.co.uk.

RESIDENTS can hone their culinary skills in Thai cooking, thanks to a course promising to reveal the wonders of the South East Asian cuisine. Lessons are run by Nuch Wills, who taught at Thailand's world famous Blue Elephant restaurant in Phuket, from her kitchen in Redland. She can also deliver private sessions from the customer's home. Nuch said: "I tailor each lesson to the needs of the student, whether they're a confident cook who wants to explore traditional approaches to Thai cooking or a beginner who wants to have fun and try something new." Each course lasts three hours and students can select any three dishes from a selection on the website. Westbury Park mum Clare Savage recently attended a session.

March started with such comments as: “Is that a shoot on the fuchsia?”; “Have you seen the tips of the tulips?”; or even “I am sure I can see some blossom on the plum tree.” We are ever optimistic each spring, and what a lovely feeling it is to look forward to seeing the trees and shrubs with leaf or blossom. The cotoneaster step-over hedge has the faintest green haze on it. The hedge, only 18 inches high, is made up of about 25-30 self-seeded shoots from around the garden, planted over the last 10 years. At no cost and very little effort we have a neat boundary to the path. There is so much that can be done this time of year to replenish your own garden, or provide for friends by splitting those sturdy annuals. One of the major jobs in April and May will be to tend the lawn. A lot of moss has appeared and needs to be dealt with. A light raking will help but do not be too vigorous and tear out the new shoots.

bishopstonvoice

May, 2014

Showers + sunshine = weeds A proprietory feed, weed and mosskiller applied just before rain will usually do the job, but perhaps a second dressing may be necessary. When, after several weeks, the moss is looking black, take a tined rake to it and clear it out. Don’t compost the moss – burn it or use the green waste collection. April brings the showers, sunshine and weeds. Cutting the grass this week I discovered some lesser celandine showing itself. It is all right in the rougher parts of the garden but not in the prized turf. An application of lawn treatment is due but once is not enough for celandine. So I spot

weed them as soon as I see the little yellow flowers, about two weeks before the main treatment. This weakens them and the following grass treatment finishes them off. It is tedious and time-consuming but it is worth it. We shall be preparing our raised bed now ready for the radishes, and in early May for the climbing dwarf beans. I shall take off the top six inches, put in a good, thick layer of garden compost and then bring the level up with new compost. That seems to suit them.

News Soukous targets double delight A COTHAM Hill store has been selected as a finalist in the Greats Gift Retailer Awards - not just in one category, but two. Soukous, which specialises in unique and unusual gifts, is up for the Best Independent Gift Retailer of the Year (South West) and Best Window Display. The Greats Awards, now in its 12th year, was launched by Progressive Gifts and Home magazine to recognise and reward the UK's very best gift retailers across the retail spectrum. Editor Sue Marks, said: "These dedicated awards for gift retailers have risen immeasurably in status over the years and are now universally acknowledged as being true accolades of excellence." Elisa Snaden, director of Soukous which has been on Cotham Hill for 12 years, said that she was "thrilled" about

being selected for the finals. All retail finalists were decided as a result of an industry-wide poll of gift

suppliers, reps and agents, with validation from a panel of experts. The winners of this year’s

prestigious gift retailing awards will be revealed at an awards lunch at the Savoy Hotel in London on May 8.

Community garden calls for new members

‘Do it Yourselfie’ window for win

THE Golden Hill Community Garden is seeking new members since becoming independent at the beginning of April. The £88,000 of Lottery money originally awarded to the Horfield and District Allotment Association, in which the garden is based, has been spent, and all of the targets set for the community group have been met. Lucy Mitchell stated on the GHCG website: “We’ve exceeded our wildest dreams in terms of numbers and participation - we have not just created a community garden but a fabulous community of gardeners.” Over the past month, the group has had around 40 people a week attending the open volunteering days. For information about how to become a member, visit: thegoldenhillcommunitygarden. com

COTHAM Hardware has beaten tough, national opposition to win the prestigious Hardware Retailer of the Year award. The 99-year-old independent store on Cotham Hill in Bristol picked up the award at the DIY Week Awards, which took place in February. The panel of DIY industry judges said: "What Cotham Hardware has achieved over the past 12 months is incredible." The judges also congratulated the store on its recent transformation, including their use of fun and creative marketing ideas to create a buzz. Famous for its quirky and eye-catching window displays, which have gone viral via the internet, Cotham Hardware celebrated their win with a fun take on the famous Oscars ‘selfie’ with a ‘Do it Yourselfie’ window display.

Cotham Hardware’s display depicting Hollywood stars admiring the award. Typical of their unique displays, the window depicts a line-up of some of Hollywood’s biggest names admiring the award. According to owner, Dave Jenkins, the reaction from locals has been "fantastic". He said: "We are very proud to have won this award and

would like to thank all our customers for their support and encouragement. "We want to continue to serve our community beyond our normal shop opening times, which will include not only a click and collect service, but also free delivery by bicycle if at all possible."

hope is to capture an individual feel for the subject. His days as a fruit grower are long gone and he now earns a living as a travelling artist, painting as he goes. Pip Gillman’s exhibition at Room 212 runs from May 1-17. Weather permitting, he plans to set up his easel on the pavement outside the gallery and paint street scenes and passers-by. Pip Gillman is renowned for his watercolour paintings of town scapes around Bristol and Bath, and now he is concentrating on the Glos Rd Central area. His work includes familiar scenes such as the corner of Gloucester Road and Bishop Rd, Joe’s Bakery and views down Pigsty Hill and around St Andrews Park. Pip was a fruit grower for twenty years, but a chance encounter in 1991, when he was given a sketchbook and pencil, started him on the road to painting aged 40. Pip said: “I tried my hand at watercolour painting and discovered how frustratingly difficult it is! It’s an unforgiving medium, where mistakes can easily lead to failure. However, when it works its simplicity and transparency is quite unique.” Self-taught, and with no formal art training, his influences are many, but his

the ‘glorious war’. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up. What follows is the moving story of a young ‘unknown soldier’ experiencing the horror and disillusionment of life in the trenches. AMAZON REVIEW: If any book deserves to be re-read at least once a year then this is it. It’s an amazingly eloquent account of a young German soldier’s life in the trenches of WW1. To hear his vivid descriptions of the hardships that these young men faced, and of the harrowing sights they saw and dealt with, is to be humbled by his words. The book is written in a manner so that it’s not immediately obvious which country the soldier is from and I feel that’s exactly the way the author wanted it to come across. No acts of bravado or selfpitying sentiments are expressed, but just a desire on the parts of all of the brave young men to overcome the hell they are in and to try and survive until peace is declared. This is a harrowing read at times, but beautifully written and not a word is wasted. I’ll always have a copy on my shelves and will re-read it each November as I honour soldiers past and present on Remembrance Day. Children’s Fiction - Read and enjoyed by Reuben Betts (10 years old)

at the camp is to dig a hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, and report anything that he finds in that hole. The warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie and Stanley must dig up the truth. REUBEN’S REVIEW: Holes is a good book about a boy called Stanley Yelnats who is sentenced to spend time at Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a horrible, dry place with no lake, where boys are told to dig a hole every day but for no apparent reason. Stanley makes some weird friends at Camp Green Lake, such as Zero. I enjoyed this book because there is a broad range of characters and the plot is imaginative with lots of surprises. I think it would appeal to children aged 7 to 13. I hope you enjoy reading it like me. Show Less For these books and many, many more great titles, come along to Cheltenham Road Library and let us point you in the right direction. Some vineyard owners light fires to keep the air circulating and stop temperatures dropping too low. Having two small children and not living on site makes this a bit harder for me, so I just have to hope for the best! The only thing I can do to minimise the risk is leave my stems pointing up as long as possible before tying them down to the fruiting wire – a fraction of a degree can make all the difference to the damage done on a cold night. Glastonbury a few weeks ago to try the 2013 Pinot noir for the first time. It’s a lot lighter in colour than last year’s wine and has an amazing flavour. Steve the winemaker thinks it’s one of the best wines he’s made this year and, thankfully, I loved it too. Once it’s all labelled, it’ll be ready to go on sale – hopefully in the next few weeks. Exciting times ahead. www.dunleavyvineyards. co.uk @DYvineyards (Twitter) Dunleavy Vineyards (Facebook)

Hello readers, this week has involved lots of work around rogue traders and bogus callers. We have been promoting the ‘Not sure? Don’t open the door message’. This has involved visiting previous victims of rogue trading offering reassurance and putting up materials offering advice in areas where potential victims could see the message. Anybody could fall victim to rogue trading or doorstep fraud, however the individuals involved tend to target people they consider easy, such as the elderly. People still feel that they must answer the door when people call. The message is clear ‘NOT SURE, DON’T ANSWER THE DOOR’ Our community speed watch support continues. We have been supplied with some additional equipment to help support local speed watches. We were on Gloucester Road recently

where nearly 200 vehicles were speed checked. The weather conditions and traffic levels may have been a factor but there seemed a reduction in the overall speed of vehicles since our previous speed watch at the location in February. If anyone would like to get involved with community speed watch please drop me a line. We have changed our patrol plans to suit the time of year. The parks and green spaces get busy and we get lots of calls relating to excessive noise and anti-social behaviour. It’s important that park users and residents are happy with the way these spaces are being used. If anyone would like to get in touch with the local policing team you can email : david.said@ avonandsomerset.police.uk. Stay safe out there.

homes and studios. All venues are free to enter and there will be an opportunity to meet the artists, watch some of them at work, and even buy quality art at very affordable prices. BS9 arts chairperson, Stephen Howarth, said: "We’re hoping visitors to the art trail will take advantage of the beautiful green spaces in BS9 including the Downs, Golden Hill, Westbury Wildlife Park and Blaise Estate to enjoy a walk or cycle in the spring sunshine on the way to the delights of wonderful artistic

creativity at the different venues. "With plenty of opportunities for refreshments along the trail, we’re looking forward to making the weekend a wonderful time out for all." The art trail will be taking place on May 10-11 from 11am5pm. Leaflets showing the trail map and artist details will be available at every venue and also at local libraries, cafes, shops and galleries. Leaflets will also be posted through residents' doors. For more information visit: www. bs9arts.co.uk.

Art trail in Westbury Park WESTBURY Park will be hosting an art trail in June, where visitors can discover a wide variety of work on display in local artists' homes, galleries and church exhibitions. The art trail, which is in its second year, is linked to the popular Westbury Park Festival. Work on display will include paintings, prints, ceramics, photography, wood carvings, jewellery and textiles. Children can also take part in a "Big Draw" activity at the Methodist Church in North View, where refreshments will be available. The trail runs from June 6 (69pm) to June 7 (11am-5pm). For more information, visit: www. westburyparkarttrail.weebly. com. Trail guides are available from galleries in Westbury Park and local libraries.

News Community gets set for May Fair on the green THOUSANDS of fair-goers are expected to flock to Redland Green at the beginning of May for, what is set to be, the biggest free community event in the area. The Redland May Fair, which is being held on Early May Bank Holiday Monday, was established in June 1977 by a group of local mums. The event has helped raise thousands of pounds for charity over the years, with around £2,5000 being donated to St Peter's Hospice last year. Many local charities, groups and schools also have stalls to do their own fundraising. This year, the May Fair collection will go to 're:new – Building for community', Redland Parish Church’s project to demolish the older church halls on Redland Green and build a new complex of halls in their place. The parish has set an ambitious fundraising target of £1.7 million. Over a hundred stalls will be set up at this year’s fair. There will also be a host of live music from groups including PanSonic Steel Pan Band, Redland Wind Band and Bristol Samba; as well as children’s

entertainment; swingboats; and morris dancing. Refreshments will be available in the church hall, the bowling and tennis clubs, and

on the green. The May Fair will take place on May 5, running from 1-5pm.

Going to the cricket? Try travelling by bus GLOUCESTERSHIRE Country Cricket Club (GCCC) is partnering up with First West of England to encourage spectators to use the bus when travelling to and from the ground over the cricket season. In addition, First is working with the club to provide a park and ride service for the England v India One-Day International Match, which is being held on 25 August. The service will run from two sites, Portway Park and Ride and from the University of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus, to assist cricket fans with getting in and out of the city. To help cricket fans plan their journeys, First has created a page on their website, which lists forthcoming fixtures while offering information about the bus services. Chief executive at GCCC, Will Brown, said: "We're absolutely delighted to be partnering with First West of England for the 2014 season. "Providing affordable, safe and reliable transport to the Bristol County Ground is massively important to the

club and for our members, spectators and visitors. "First’s standard routes, in addition to their hugely important park and ride service, is a great example of how two great brands can work together to improve community access to an iconic and popular sporting venue." Paul Matthews, managing director of First West of England, said: "We are thrilled to be working with GCCC to promote sustainable ways of getting to and from their matches. "If you’re heading to the cricket this season then travelling by bus is the best option. Our services run within a few minutes’ walk of the ground, operate frequently and the 75 service runs throughout the night. "Travelling by bus also means you can avoid the hassle of parking yourself. You can sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that if you wish to you can have a drink while you’re out, the bus is the best way of getting there and back." For more information, visit: ww.firstgroup.com/bristolcricket

Final chance to tackle Mem steps RETURNING for a second year is the St Peter’s Hospice Stadium Dash, supported by Bristol Rovers. The event, set up by fundraisers who have first-hand experience of the care provided by St Peter’s, challenges Bristolians to race up and down the 415 steps at the Memorial Stadium to raise funds for the charity. Organisers are encouraging people to sign up and beat last year’s record of 2 minutes 44 seconds, held by 33-year-old Robert Ladd who completed the challenge, alongside his sister, in memory of their father. St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year, as well as supporting family members. Event fundraiser for the hospice, Maria del

Carmen Moon Park, said: “This is a fab event to get involved in, last year was a huge success and we really want to see people setting the record again! “It’s also going to be the last time people will have the chance to do something like this at the Memorial Stadium before it is gone.” People can enter individually or as a team of friends, family or colleagues. The dash is taking place from 10am on June 7. First, second and third prizes will be given to the fastest individuals or teams. Registration is just £10 and there is no minimum sponsorship amount. To request a form, contact Maria on Maria. MoonPark@stpetershospice.org or visit www. stpetershospice.org.uk

The annual 5k Run for the Future is back raising money for the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) which cares for men in the city with prostate cancer. Often called the “silent killer”, due to few early symptoms, prostate cancer affects over 40,000 UK men each year of which over 10,000 do not survive. This year’s run will take place on Sunday 14 September on Bristol Downs where people will walk, jog or run around the course to support the vital work of the BUI. Sponsored by Spire Hospital Bristol, the James Tudor Foundation and Bakers Dolphin, there will also be live music, stalls and refreshments for a fun day out. Registrations will be open soon on the website www.runforthefuture.org.
