THE Bristol Central Library will be closed on weekdays for four weeks in March to make some improvements to the historic building and allow construction work to be carried out safely. The team will use this period to expose and restore the Hayward Lights in the library floor, which were an original feature of the Charles Holden designed building. These will be restored as a key part of the library space for the first time since the 1980s. This time will also be used to redecorate parts of the first floor and make much needed improvements to the accessible toilet. Thangam’s new role on the front bench BRISTOL West MP, Thangam Debbonaire, has been promoted to the Labour party front bench. Appointed as shadow minister for Culture, Media and Sport, Ms Debbonaire said: “I’m thrilled to bits at my new appointment. The focus will be on the culture part of the brief, which makes the role a great fit with my personal and professional background, and the vibrant cultural life of my city.” She added: “As a former professional cellist, I’m proud to be able to make this contribution to our national cultural life. The Labour Party has a great track record of supporting the arts and I will do everything I can to continue that tradition.” It will be Ms Debbonaire’s job to hold the Government to account during debates on culture funding and support in the House of Commons, and also through questions to the department. Ms Debbonaire plans to take up her new post gradually during the next few months as she is undergoing radiotherapy treatment in Bristol this month,

having had a cancerous tumour removed last November. She is currently working mornings at her Bristol West constituency office and hopes to return to Westminster on a part-time basis by the end of February, and full-time by May. Ms Debbonaire added: “I’ve just started a four-week course of radiotherapy – the last part of my treatment for breast cancer – and will be making a phased return to Parliament over the following weeks. “I’m very grateful for the support of the Labour Party leadership and my constituency team in being able to do so.”

Redland Green plans 3-storey extension as pupil demand rises

PARENTS, staff and students have had their first look at plans to expand Redland Green School. An expansion consultation and information event was held at the school last week to inform local residents about their vision for future building work and landscaping. The meeting was held as part of Redland Green’s planning permission consultation. In response to growing applications for secondary school places in north Bristol, the school has submitted a planning application to build a 3-storey extension to complete the East Wing of the school. The new building will provide 10 additional standard classrooms and will enable Redland Green School to expand to an 8-form entry school admitting an additional 27 students to Year 7 in September 2016 and each coming year until 2020. Headteacher Sarah Baker said: “We are delighted the planning permission has been submitted for the 3-storey East Wing of Redland Green School that will complete the originally planned for design. As we know there is massive pressure on school places in Bristol, particularly as our local primary schools have expanded

News?

and demand has increased. For anyone interested in the building plans, they can be found on our school website.” The building was designed by Skanska as part of the original scheme when the school opened but couldn’t be completed due to cost constraints at the time. Although the extension is of a similar height to the original plans, full planning approval is now required as the new building will be detached from the existing build. Access for staff and pupils will be provided via bridge links and there is a change to the configuration of the windows. Improvements to the outdoor environment for students are also planned to make better use of the site, and a fundraising drive aimed at parents will be initiated to help pay for it. There are designs for a wildlife pond which will provide an outdoor resource for the science area, cricket nets, an outdoor seating area and a covered area. The proposal has been broadly welcomed by local parents. Redland Green is a high achieving school but getting a place has become increasingly difficult as the boundary is drawn ever nearer.

Stopping the Rot! with Sophie McGill

W

ITH the weather this Winter reeking havoc around our countryside and with everything becoming soggy rather than snowy, the talk of the doggie world has been the mystery disease that has been causing severe illness and fatalities in dogs after walks in damp woodland mostly during Winter and Spring. Alabama Rot (or CRGV) has been concerning many people walking their dogs in woods, but what exactly is this mystery disease with high fatalities? The short answer is that no one is sure. In the 1980’s in America, there were cases of Greyhounds that became very sick with kidney failure and often nasty skin lesions as well. In more recent years there have been dogs affected in the UK. Often these dogs have been walking in woodland areas, but it is not known for sure if the UK disease is the same as that in USA. We also do not know for sure what the underlying cause of the disease is and so it is very difficult to know how to prevent it. The most recent theory suggests a bacterial toxin. Currently the advice is not to walk your dog in areas of woodland that have been associated with Alabama Rot. If you are walking your dog in woodland, it is advisable to wash his or her legs after the walk to remove all mud.

We would advise you to check over your dog each day for any strange skin lesions. With Alabama Rot, many dogs first develop skin lesions on the lower parts of their legs (below the elbow and knee), these can be mild at first but can develop into chronic non healing ulcers in the skin. Over the next few days they start to show signs of kidney disease such as vomiting, tiredness and a reluctance to eat. The disease is often fatal so early treatment is very important. The disease can only be diagnosed for certain on post mortem examination of the kidneys. The thing to remember is that there have not been a huge number of confirmed cases of Alabama Rot in the UK. Most cases have centered around the New Forest and Hampshire and a few more recent cases in Wiltshire. At the time of writing we are not aware of any confirmed cases in our locality. There are also many different causes of skin disease and of kidney disease, however if you have any concerns about the symptoms your dog is currently showing then give us a call at Animal Health Centre on 0117 9247832.

Candidate in call to look at the bigger picture in Bishopston developments A CLEAR plan for the redevelopment of three major sites in the Bishopston area should be drawn up so that all the changes are considered together, proposes Becky Lockyer, Lib Dem Candidate for Bishopston and Ashley Down ward. Plans are currently being considered for the Memorial Ground in Horfield, the Brunel House site in Ashley Down and HMP Prison Bristol in Bishopston. The area has also seen a population growth which has meant that accommodation and school places are in short supply. The Memorial Ground is still trying to find a resolution in the battle with Sainsbury’s who no longer wish to build upon the site. Owners of the Brunel House site has put in a planning application for 103 units with provision for just 59 parking spaces and opinions are being sought on what people may want to do with the prison site. Ms Lockyer says: “We need to start taking a proper view about what matters for the whole community in this area. There are so many changes proposed that we have to develop a forwardlooking, proactive plan rather than simply reacting each time to new proposals.” “One of these sites could be considered for housing, a school, or a doctor’s surgery. This is such a quirky and delightful area let our response to this opportunity be something that we can be proud of.”

Have your say about the future of Horfield Prison THIS year’s first forums of the Bishopston, Cotham and Redland Neighbourhood Partnership will take place in February. All residents are welcome to come along and discuss local issues which affect their area. During the last Bishopston Forum councillor Daniella Radice urged local residents to have their say over the future of Horfield Prison. If the site is sold, one of the possibilities is to turn it into new housing, a suggestion that was opposed by some residents due to the lack of secondary school places in the area. Bishopston Neighbourhood Forum: Wednesday, February 10, from 7pm to 9pm at Memorial Stadium, Filton Avenue, BS7 0BF. Cotham Neighbourhood Forum: Monday, February 15, from 7pm to 9pm at Charnwood House 6th form centre, Cotham Park, BS6 6BU. Redland Neighbourhood Forum: Tuesday February 16, from 7pm to 9pm at Redland Bowls Club, Redland Green Road, BS6 7HE. News Window Wanderland will light up winter nights By Zuzana Pohloudkova AFTER last year’s success, residents of Bishopston are again invited to make displays in their front windows, which form a trail to be explored over the weekend of February 20 and 21 from 6pm - 9pm. Window Wanderland aims to light up neighbourhoods using fun and playfulness. Lucy Reeves who started the event last year said: “What a great response we have had for such diverse displays - there is imagination in the streets of Bishopston! “Plans are happening for a Hamster Party in Manor Road, Illness & Anarchy in Bishop Road, Celestial Glass Angels on Springfield Avenue, Heaven and Hell in Cromwell Road and a band in the living room at the bottom of Brynland Avenue. There is something for

everyone!” Dominique Blackmore, community liaison coordinator for Bishopston says: “We want it to be easy to do and fun for everybody. We want people to enjoy it. The idea is that it is really accessible and inclusive. Everybody is creative in their

own way so anybody can do a window! “This year is much bigger than the last one, 135 people have already signed in and that doesn’t include some of the traders and local schools.” Last year over 2,500 people wandered across 55 roads with

over 200 window displays. Local cafes increased their takings by 160%. It is a good opportunity for the community to work together during long winter nights. Ashley Down schools will be taking over Totally Toys and Grounded, whilst Sefton Park school will

Front of Stage for Dale the Dalek BRISTOL Has Talent is underway in the garden of a wellknown Bishopston fundraiser. Keith Walker likes to put on a show in his front garden and in previous years has made the headlines with his popular Dale the Dalek display, and a beach theme in the middle of winter. For this year he’s built a stage in his front garden,

which will remain all month, and has invited local residents to come along to perform. All donations are for the Children’s Hospice South West. Keith raised over £1,000 for the charity last year and is hoping to repeat that, or better it, this year. The stage and PA system are proving popular already with the local children and

Keith is keen to encourage adults to have a go too. So if you are in the mood to show that Bristol Has Talent, your stage awaits. To add to the fun, Keith will be joined by Gloucester Road pizza company, Pizzarover, on the Winter Wanderland weekend trail. To book a slot to perform, contact Keith

Education Shaun the sheep named

FAIRFIELD High School received some great entries for the naming of Shaun the Sheep which featured in our December issue. Shaun was designed, painted and now takes residence at the school. It was a tough decision, but the FHS is delighted with the winning name: EWE-NITED NATIONS! It’s a clever play with words, especially in light of the multitude of flags covering Shaun’s back. Other strong contenders were EWENION and EWE-UNION FLAG. There were three winners of the prize: Connie Davies aged 8 Isabel Smith (age 9) and Oscar Smith (age 7) Each of these winners will receive their own loveable Shaun, as featured in this photograph, and we look forward to sharing a snap of the winners with their prizes next time.

Former QEH ‘Captain of School’ lighting up screens in BBC Drama A FORMER QEH school pupil is starring in the BBC One production ‘Dickensian’. Ben Starr, who was Captain of School during his time at QEH, is currently playing the role of Captain James Hawdon in the popular prime time drama having developed a love of theatre during his school days. ‘Dickensian’, set within the fictional realms of Charles Dickens’ critically acclaimed novels, brings together some of his most iconic characters as their lives intertwine in 19th century London. It is aired at 8.00pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays, on BBC One. Filming is also underway for Ben’s next project, ‘Medici: Masters of Florence’, in which he stars alongside acting heavy weight Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden, from Game of Thrones. Ben left QEH in 2006, after winning a place at Durham University, and began his acting career training at the reputable London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Whilst there, his roles included James Leighton-Masters in POSH, Sir Samuel Hearty in The Virtuoso, and Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His theatre credits also include the critically acclaimed Yellow Face at The National Theatre. Gabriella’s letter detailed her desire to become an Actuary, like her father, because she loves Maths and has an aspiration to help rebuild people’s lives after a catastrophe. The Royal Mail received and judged nearly 100,000 letters and next month a panel of judges, including TV presenter Helen Skelton, will select the winners.

Education 125th anniversary celebrations for Colston’s Girls’ School ONE of the Bristol’s most popular secondary schools has played an important role in educating girls since it opened on January 18, 1891. Head of Colston Girl’s School, Alistair Perry, said: “Generations of young women, staff and parents have been proud to be a part of CGS’s vibrant, caring and highly successful learning community. Students have always been taught to be independent, curious and resourceful in their learning, to seek knowledge and opportunities and to achieve more than they had thought possible.” The school was set up by the Society of Merchant Venturers to reflect the changing educational priorities of the late nineteenth century and their own commitment to providing access to education for all young people.

On the day of the anniversary, the girls were all shown a slideshow of the school’s history and invited to take part in a competition. Lessons had an anniversary theme and were followed by special assemblies – and cake! Each student was presented with a commemorative lapel pin.

Orchard School visit ‘World goes Pop’ YEAR 10 GCSE Art students from Orchard School in Horfield visited the ‘World goes Pop’ last month - an exhibiton at The Tate Modern gallery in London. Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and thought the exhibition - described as fun, engaging, colourful, revelatory, opinionated, racy and stunning was one of the best ever! A wide range of Pop Art was on display, and both students and staff alike found it interesting to learn how Pop Art - often seen as fun and not to be taken seriously - dealt with important topics such as war, gender inequality and racism. There was also enough time to explore the permanent collections and view pieces such as Marcel Duchamps ‘Fountain’ (which is actually a signed urinal!), which led to some interesting discussions as to what constitutes as art. Student Paul Jeffries said:

‘It was a long three hour journey to the Tate Modern but it was so worth it!’ The show, which ran until

24th January, illuminated how pop wasn’t confined to Andy Warhol’s Factory in New York or Richard Hamilton’s studio in London – it was a phenomenon

that reached much further, practiced by artists in Peru, Israel, Argentina, Japan, Brazil and Eastern Europe.

St Teresa’s Primary head Amanda Pritchard with pupils whose siblings took the SATs tests last summer and of course our lovely pupils themselves who give of their best and help each other. “Everybody at St Teresa’s works hard every day to ensure

that the children have the best possible chance to make the most of their gifts and talents in a happy and caring atmosphere.

PUPILS at a Horfield primary school made more progress last year than any other in the whole Bristol region, new figures show. St Teresa’s Catholic Primary topped the rankings for ‘value added’ across Bristol, South Glos, North Somerset and BANES, and placed in the top 100 nationally. The school was also in the top three performing schools in Bristol for key stage two SATs results, with 97% of pupils achieving at least level 4+ and 52% of pupils achieving level 5+ in reading, writing and maths. In addition, 45% of pupils achieved a level 6 in maths. Level 4 is the Government’s measure of where a child, on average, is expected to reach by the end of primary school. St Teresa’s head Amanda Pritchard said: “This is the culmination of many years of hard work and is due to the dedication and skills of all our staff, governors and parents

Bristol School Results Improving Redland Green School has played its part in Bristol schools being above the national average for GCSE performance for the second year running. Over the past decade schools in the city have been improving and that success was consolidated last year as 54% of students achieved five or more GCSE grade A*- C including English and maths, a result slightly above the average national figure. Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson, said: “We should be proud of Bristol’s young people and the many students who worked so hard to achieve their GCSE results. “As a Learning City we are there to make sure our young people keep on learning as they take their next steps into employment, training or higher

education. For now though, I’d like to congratulate each of them on their achievements so far.” There were some notable success stories across the city in the numbers of pupils achieving five or more grade A* – C including English and maths. A number of schools including Bristol Cathedral Choir School, Redland Green School and Colston’s Girls School saw over 80% of students achieve this standard. A number of schools also made big improvements - City Academy saw a 13% increase in pupils achieving this standard since 2014. Councillor Brenda Massey, Assistant Mayor for People with responsibility for education, said: “Creating successful schools is down to a number of factors, including recruiting

strong teachers and leaders, and providing quality learning environments. I know that headteachers across the city have high aspirations for students and it’s vital that they continue to inspire all pupils so they want to learn and reach their full potential.” “As a council our aspiration is to be in the top 25% of local authorities. We want to see all schools in the city performing well so we’re focusing on those who need more support, working in partnership with headteachers and staff to share best practice between schools and identify and issues that need to be addressed.” The performance tables can be found here: http://www. education.gov.uk/schools/ performance/

News Massive response to church’s appeal on behalf of refugees

A Church in Westbury Park (St Alban’s CofE and Westbury Park Methodist) put out an appeal in January for warm winter clothing for refugees in Northern Iraq and Syria and they have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people. The congregation and community have joined forces to collect essentials for those living in camps in freezing conditions. Warm clothes are a major priority but so are shoes, boots, baby equipment, sanitary products and zimmer frames. The donated goods, which will be taken to the Middle East by the charity ‘Samara’s Aid’, have completely taken over the Methodist Church on North View where they are being stored before being shipped at the end of the month. Tons of clothes and over £3000 has been raised in just

a few days as the people of Westbury Park have pulled together in solidarity with some of the most vulnerable people in the world. “We are overwhelmed by the response” said Emma Langley, Vicar of St Alban’s and Ecumenical Minister in the Church in Westbury Park. “We’d hoped to have a van full of stuff to take but now it looks like we’re going to need a removal lorry. People have been so generous - both with their donations of clothing and other vital supplies but also with the money needed to cover the cost of shipping them to the Middle East. Lives will be saved because of the incredible generosity of members of this community” Dozens of volunteers have started the work of sorting and packing the clothing. The Church in Westbury Park is hoping to

MUM Hello and welcome! I hope readers are well and enjoying 2016 so far. I have been up to several interesting things in the local area over the last few weeks. First of all, I had the pleasure of meeting Sara Wheeler, a mum from Ashley Down who volunteers for Aid Bob Convoy – Bristol to Refugees in Europe, a group of volunteers from Bristol who collect, deliver and distribute aid boxes to refugees in Europe. Last week Sara made her second trip with Aid Box Convoy to the refugee camp in Dunkerque. Sara explained

about the appalling conditions at the camp and about the work ABC does. For a list of ways you can help Aid Box Convoy, please visit www.aidboxconvoy. co.uk Last week my family and I went to see the latest show from Monkey Trousers Theatre at the Kelvin Players Studio. For those who don’t know, Monkey Trousers Theatre is a theatre company set up by two local mums, Fran Lewis and Charlotte Whitten with the aim of bringing more format theatre for children in and around the South West. As always, the latest show was fantastic and funny and kept all children enthralled. I was picked out to be a volunteer in the show, which, while slightly embarrassing for me, delighted my children! Yesterday I popped into Ardagh Toddlers, a playgroup for young children aged 0 – 4 held on Mondays 10 – 11.30am at the Ardagh on Horfield Common. I used to visit Ardagh Toddlers with my own children and always found it a friendly and relaxed group. I am

www.bishopstonvoice.co.uk

pleased to report it is just as friendly; the volunteers are very welcoming and helpful and along with the group’s unstructured format it is still very relaxed. There is no waiting list so do please go along one Monday. There are lots of dads at the group at present so if you are a dad at home with young children on Monday I recommend visiting. My children are well and as busy as ever. My son is still enjoying Beavers and is steadily working through gaining all the badges. I have luckily made the recent discovery of fabric glue to which I am grateful – the other evening I was handed 7 new badges by my son to go on his uniform! My daughter is still enjoying ballet and is doing well at her swimming lessons also. Since saying goodbye to our lovely

Renewed call for foster carers BRISTOL City Council is renewing its call for people to consider fostering in 2016 as the number of fostered children across the UK hits record levels. The Fostering Network estimates that another 9,000 new foster families across the UK will be needed in 2016 with 600 being sought in the South West. To help people find out what fostering involves, Bristol City Council is running two new events; an adoption and fostering workshop for community leaders in February and an LGBT adoption and fostering event in March. In particular, there is a need for families who are

able and willing to provide a home to older children, sibling groups, children with disabilities and those from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. These are the groups who often find themselves waiting the longest to be placed. Councillor Brenda Massey, Assistant Mayor for People with responsibility for Fostering and Adoption Services, said: “These latest figures show how needed foster carers are to provide a loving and safe home to some of the most vulnerable young people in society. “I would like to encourage all in Bristol to consider the joy and reward of opening up

their home to a child in need of that love and security and I urge anyone thinking of fostering or just curious about this rewarding opportunity, to make contact and come along to one.” You can find out more at the following events: • Lead the Way – Adoption and Fostering Workshop –CCS Adoption, 162 Pennywell Road, BS5 0TX – 3 February – 10am to 12pm - www.facebook.com/ events/1681691175449193/ • LGBT Adoption and Fostering Event – AtBristol, Anchor Way, BS1 5DB – 10 March – 7:00pm to 9pm- www.facebook.com/ events/1682252402030919/

Tackling bad behaviour on Common HORFIELD Common is one of Bristol’s parks where the council would like to implement a new set of 24 byelaws. The byelaws will enable the council and partners to tackle nuisance and other antisocial behaviour that adversely affects the enjoyment and safe use of the city’s green spaces. They will address issues like barbecues being placed directly on grass thereby killing off the roots, cyclists who endanger other parks users by their behaviour and people taking plants from parks shrub beds. The existing byelaws date from Victorian times and apply to just 25 of Bristol’s parks. In a period from 2011 to 2013 the Council and the police received a total of 3,157 complaints about nuisance in 212 local parks. The advantage of using byelaws as opposed to other approaches is that they allow nuisance behaviour to be

addressed immediately.Public consultation in 2013 showed 77% of respondents were in favour of revised byelaws, indicating that the council should actively manage the use of, and control behaviours in the parks.

Volunteers Needed for Reading Scheme BRISTOL Reading Partners, the council’s flagship reading scheme, has launched a fresh call for volunteers to help expand the initiative and benefit even more pupils across the city this year. The scheme works with children aged 5-7 who are in need of a little extra help, and matches pupils with volunteers who want to help give primary school children a better start in life. There are now over 70 volunteers working in schools in all parts of Bristol – and over 250 children have benefitted from the scheme. George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol, is championing Bristol Reading Partners. He said: “This year, Bristol’s year of Learning, I want to highlight the many opportunities there are in Bristol for us all to learn something new, and, crucially, I want to see more

children across our city learning to read fluently. “Within the Council we’re totally committed to this initiative to the extent that staff are allowed time off as well as donating some of their own time to help give something back to the community.” The response from local people has already been outstanding with over 50 volunteers signing up in the past six months. There is compelling evidence that Bristol Reading Partners works as volunteers partner with teachers to track pupils’ progress. The next training course is held on February 22 at The Bridge Professional Development Centre, Tayfant Road, BS13. For more information about this scheme, or to sign up, contact volunteer@bristol.gov. uk .

Have your say on improvements at Ashley Down RESIDENTS can have their say over the design of a new play area and an improved access for the grounds behind the Muller Orphan Houses. The drop in session will take place on Saturday, February 6 on Ashley Down Road, opposite the Co-Op from 11am until 3pm. The new play area is intended for children up to age 13 and will cover an area of approximately 800 sq. meters of the total size of 11,000 sq. meters. A new entrance linking Stoney Lane and the Green will be discussed as well. The work on that was stopped due to the lack of communication with the public about the designs of the gate. Plans are in the last phase of consultation which runs until February 26. If no revision will be needed, work begins in April or May. Yoga sessions a yurt lush success CITY of Bristol College students stretched themselves further recently as they took part in a roaming Yoga Yurt across three campuses. Yoga lessons have been offered to both students and staff as part of a series of Health and Wellbeing roadshows held at the College’s centres at Ashley Down, College Green and South Bristol Skills Academy. The Yoga Girls Can project is funded by Sport England and the National Lottery, in a bid to encourage more young women to take up healthy exercise. The free to try sessions are being delivered at universities and colleges throughout the south west by the West of England Sport Trust. Instructor Lucy Milner said: “The sessions are designed to provide a gentle introduction to yoga, in a fun and supportive way, and show how accessible it is. City of Bristol College,

in particular, has been very successful, and we’ve seen a lot of interest from the students.” Gemma Parry, Sport Maker at the College, added: “The project is primarily aimed at

young women to encourage them to become more active, but the sessions have been open to students of both sexes to try it out and discover both the relaxing and physical benefits

of yoga.” The closed sessions will be held on Tuesdays at College Green (2pm4pm), SBSA (3pm4pm) and Thursdays at Ashley Down 2.45pm3.45pm) for the next six weeks.

Into the Woods

“BE careful what you wish for” is the motto of this difficult piece of theatre but it was an absolute triumph for the Ivy Arts Youth Theatre last weekend. The Durdham Downs based theatre group rose to the occasion with their magical performance of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” at The Olympus Theatre in Filton. Kelly Packer, Director of Ivy Arts, said: “From the outset, I knew that this musical would be the most challenging piece of musical theatre we would ever undertake. However, with a musical as clever and brilliant as “Into the Woods”, it is a risk worth taking.” “Into the Woods” is a magical mix of the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and a childless baker and his wife, who just happen to live next door to a witch. It is a complicated tale where what everyone thinks they want, happens to have a dark twist. Kelly said: “Stephen Sondheim’s writing and music is not easy for the actors and he really makes you know your stuff. For such a young cast to cope with such a demanding score is testament to their talent. I take my hat off to them.” The cast are aged between 13 and 19 years, and performed with a live 15piece orchestra conducted by Bristol University student, Harry HadenBrown.

News Here’s to thee, Old Apple tree . . . MEMBERS of Horfield Organic Community Orchard (HOCO) were joined by hundreds of local residents to Wassail the orchard on January 16. This splendid annual celebration takes place on the Saturday nearest Old Twelfth Night (17 January), when it was traditional for the whole community to go out after dark to recite incantations and sing to the trees to encourage a good crop. The trees were thanked for the generous harvests of 2015. A huge noise made by everyone and was certainly mighty enough to raise the sap of the trees as the days lengthen. Pigsty Morris brought their special energy to the event. People of all ages enjoyed dressing trees with bright ribbons and shining things, and many joined in the singing. It was a colourful and cheerful start to a new growing year. Membership of the orchard

is open to anyone, and new members are welcome to join us from January 2016. Harvestshare members enjoy a dividend of the harvest, learn specialist fruitgrowing skills, and have

the pleasure of working and socialising in a green oasis in this densely populated part of Bristol. The orchard is also financially supported by members who join HOCO as Friends.

Hospital commemorates organ donors PEOPLE who donated their organs after their death have been commemorated in a new art installation at Southmead Hospital. The three-dimensional embroidery recognises the lifechanging impact of having an organ transplant as well as the loss experienced by the families of organ donors. The artwork features a cherry tree made up of quotes from the families of patients who have become organ donors as well as the recipients of organ donations. The work, entitled ‘A Few Words’, has been funded by Southmead Hospital Charity and managed by North Bristol NHS Trust’s Fresh Arts Programme. It is situated in the atrium of the hospital building by gate 36. Ian Thomas, consultant in intensive care medicine and clinical lead for organ donation at Southmead Hospital,

said: “Organ transplantation represents one of the great advances of modern medicine and is a truly life changing event for transplant recipients. Yet without the altruistic act of organ donation, organ transplantation could not happen. “This beautiful artwork perfectly captures the emotion associated with the organ donation and transplantation programmes here at Southmead Hospital and provides fitting recognition to patients who became organ donors whilst also acknowledging the impact it has on their families.” The £5,000 project was funded through Southmead Hospital Charity’s Intensive Care Unit fund, Renal fund, Guy Jordan Memorial Fund and the NBT Organ Donation Committee. Ken Pattison’s wife Jo

died in October 2013 aged 65 following a brain haemorrhage. Mr Pattinson, a Bristol resident who was keen to take part in the ‘A Few Words’ project, said: “We were both signed up to the organ donation register after seeing a previous appeal. Jo is very much still alive for us as a family, we talk and laugh about her every day, but through donating her organs she is still alive in a more tangible way too. It is wonderful that five people have benefited from this dreadful situation and it has helped us as a family to know that.” ‘A Few Words’ was made by Cotham textile artist, Penny Leaver Green, using layers of delicate silk to construct the embroidery. Inspired by the fragility, beauty and transience of cherry blossom she’d seen in Japan, Penny wanted to explore those same themes in relation to human life. She met with families of organ donors and the recipients of organs to gather the quotes for the piece. Ms Leaver Green said: “In creating the work I felt a huge responsibility to present the words of the participants in a way which was accessible, inspirational and also respectful. It is an intimate piece with the intention that a viewer has to

spend time reading the words carefully, but has an aesthetic beauty which has an immediate impact.” Jane Ibbunson, head of fundraising for Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “This beautiful piece of art captures some of the emotion around experiences of organ donation while also raising awareness of the importance of organ donation, and I hope, will encourage people to address their own feelings on this difficult subject. “It is also an opportunity for Southmead Hospital to recognise the actions of those who have donated and encourage those that haven’t already signed up to the organ donor register to do so, helping North Bristol NHS Trust to be compliant with recommendations set out by the Department of Health Organ Donation Taskforce.” Ruth Sidgwick, Fresh Arts manager, said: “This was a challenging commission to which Penny has responded with sensitivity, making an extremely beautiful artwork that I hope will give our patients, visitors and staff an inspiring pause for thought – as well as encouraging them to sign up to the Organ Donor Register.”

News In Redland this month . . . Library changes Now the council has taken back control of the development site for the new Bishopston Library work to fit it out should begin soon. We hope it will be ready in spring. A Friends group is being formed to foster support, cook up ideas for diversification of the use of the space, and involve people more in plans. Extra activities could be key to extending opening beyond the core hours which will be limited due to cuts in council spending. A volunteers scheme to supplement the work of library staff is also being set up across the city. To get involved in any way do visit the current facility at Cheltenham Rd or get in touch with us. Park Bye Laws The latest consultation over parks by laws is taking place until March 20 and can be found here: https://bristol. citizenspace.com/place/ parksbyelaws/ consult_view . These will affect local parks

including St Andrews, Cotham Gardens and Horfield common. Unfortunately due to changes in government legislation the process has been delayed still further which has caused a lot of frustration. Hopefully they will be in place in time for the summer. New ‘Virtual Electric’ buses on route 72. Two new virtual electric buses have arrived in the city and are due to start work on the 72 route that links Gloucester Rd and Whiteladies Rd. This is a real innovation as they run on batteries and have a very smooth ride (Martin was on a trial run up Park Street on one). The batteries are recharged by an onboard diesel generator as well as a brief stopover at UWE when the service arrives there and they sit over a charging plate. It’s a hybrid bus that ”knows” when it’s in an area of high pollution (including Park Street and Gloucester Road) so switches off the generator automatically

Care home nursing - a fulfilling profession

making the allelectric ride quieter. Electric buses are a step towards cleaner, safer air quality that affects many people in Bristol. Some other new, cleaner diesel buses are also now in service, too. New ward boundaries for Redland from May the area covered by Redland ward will change. This is due to a Boundaries Commission review to even out the population of each ward per councillor. Redland was one of the smaller wards by population so a new area is being added between Berkeley Rd and the prison. At the same time some wards are being made 3 member wards (all wards are currently 2 member wards in the city). This affects us as a section of the ward from Gloucester Rd to St Andrews park is being moved to Ashley ward to bring it up to the size appropriate for a 3 member ward in future. There will also be new polling stations for some people and details of these changes will

be distributed when voters get their polling cards before the May elections. Remember to register to vote – under the new system everyone has to do this individually so people should tell others to do this or they will lose their votes. Dates to note – Redland Neighbourhood Forum is on Tuesday 16 February 2016, 7pm, Redland Bowls Club, Redland Green Road, Redland, BS6 7HE Residents are also welcome to attend the BCR Neighbourhood Partnership Meeting on 7pm, Monday 25 January 2016 at Glos County Cricket Club (Nevil Road). Wetherspoons Wetherspoons has submitted another application to turn the empty building on Gloucester Road (next to the Co-op near the Anchor Pub) into a large pub. Although there are some

IZZAROVA are the newest edition to the growing food and drink scene on the Gloucester Road, taking over the old Cibo Italian Restaurant on the corner of Neville Road. Pizzarova, founded in 2013, started its journey in an old Landrover defender with a wood fired pizza oven on board in market towns across Somerset and Dorset. Making all their own sourdough and gluten free sourdough balls and using fresh toppings, with a mainly ‘choose your own’ approach to the menu, it quickly grew a strong following and they decided it was time to find a permanent home. The Pizzarova ‘Shop’ on Gloucester Road offers a casual alternative to a restaurant experience, with a simple menu comprising of, in essence, 3 choices; ‘The Lady’ a Margherita for an attractive £6, ‘Yours’ a choice of 10 fresh toppings to create your own is £9 and ‘Ours’ a monthly special at £10. Also

offered are an ‘Extra’ garlic and rosemary bread, ‘After’ frozen yoghurt and a sourdough Gluten free choice of base. The drinks list is equally simple; 3 choices of tinned beer, a craft style Pistonhead lager and amber and a local IPA, one choice of red and white wine (well chosen) and a soft selection of Cawston sparkling flavours and fresh

juices. Already popular with young professionals, families and students they offer a £4 childrens option on all their pizzas along with juice by the glass. There is colouring to keep the little ones entertained, a 10% student discount and now offer an order online and delivery service to the local area.

With their ‘street’ side of the business still going, based in Somerset from their prep kitchens, they recently took a visit to Children’s Hospice South West to cook some pizzas for the staff and families there. We hope to see them ‘roving’ around Bristol at various food markets and events throughout 2016.

We are now open; 12-10pm Sunday – Wednesday 12pm – 12am Thursday to Saturday

News Ahoy there school singers! Bowled over

CLIMB the rigging, scrub the decks and batten down the batches! Nine north Bristol schools have come together to perform an exciting new choral production by Alexander L’Estrange, called “Ahoy”. The production celebrates the tragic but inspiring story of King Henry VIII’s magnificent warship, The Mary Rose, which sank over 500 years ago. The boat was raised from the sea in 1982 and now acts as a time capsule, providing the public with a unique insight into Tudor times. Schools taking part include Sefton Park Primary, St Teresa’s Primary, Horfield C of E Primary, Orchard, Filton Avenue Primary, Upper Horfield Primary, Fonthill Primary, Stoke Park Primary and St Bernard’s Catholic Primary School. The collaboration has been organised by With One Voice Partnership, Bristol Plays Music and the Bristol Choral Society. With One Voice Spokesperson, Helen Howard said: “It has been highly rewarding to bring together all these different groups. Rehearsals are now under way and we are expecting a wonderful showcase at the prestigious Colston Hall.” The performance takes place on March 23 at 7.00pm. There will be narration, a jazz quintet, a

Yoga for Health

45

3

by Diana Penny

of Yogawest (www.yogawest.co.uk) Yoga Pose of the Month: Parvritta Trikonasana: revolved triangle pose

BENEFITS: Invigorates, stimulates and activates the liver kidneys and spleen. Relieves low back pain. Improves metabolism, balance and concentration. Begin: Stand on your mat in Tadasana, feet together. Jump your feet 4 feet apart, swinging your arms out to the sides as you do so. Turn your left foot in to about 45 degrees, and turn your right

foot out 90 degrees and at the same time revolve your hips and torso to the right. Square your hips to your right foot. Keep your legs straight and the arches of your feet active, spread and extend your toes from the base to the tips. Revolve your left inner thigh back and push down through your outer left heel; press down through the big toe mound of your right foot. Draw your kneecaps and thigh muscles up. Lift your side ribs. Curve your upper spine into your back; draw your shoulder blades down away from your ears. Move your tailbone in and lift from your frontal hipbones — by so doing, you can avoid pushing the abdomen forward. Exhale and leading with your

breastbone, simultaneously bend forward over your right leg and turn your trunk to the right. Place your left hand on the floor or on a block at your outer ankle. Practice notes: Keeping your legs firm, roll your right shoulder back — work toward it being parallel and directly above your left shoulder. Draw your right hip back. Feel the holding power and support that this action provides the upper body. If you have very stiff or painful shoulders, you can keep your top hand on your hip. Coming out: Inhale and return to an upright position. Turn your feet to the front and repeat on the other side. Jump back to Tadasana.

4

Cautions: Do not practice this pose unsupported if you have a herniated disk, a pulled hamstring, or are menstruating.

HE crow family is full of fascination for even the casual observer. Most familiar is the magpie with its eye-catching plumage, brazen behaviour and kleptomaniac reputation. The carrion crow is also common: shiny black pairs loom from rooftops or tackle passing sparrowhawks. Jays breed locally and screech raucously, especially in winter when they are stashing and retrieving their acorn stores. Ravens fly over, occasionally stopping to upset their local relatives: they breed in the Avon Gorge and appear to consider the whole of Bristol to be their territory. Jackdaws are less common but listen out for their “jack” or “chack “ call and you may spot small parties flying over towards their winter nighttime roost at Badock’s Wood. That’s five out of the potential 8 British breeding species without leaving the middle of the city! This family, properly called corvids, have a reputation for being mischievous or even downright malevolent. Most of their traditional characteristics

www.bishopstonvoice.co.uk

– thieving, suspicious, cunning, malicious – are simply explained as being signs of their great intelligence. They are the most intelligent of all birds, though closely challenged by parrots. Jays will hide great numbers of acorns as winter stores and, unlike the lackadaisical grey squirrels, are very adept at re-locating them with unused supplies being fed to their babies in spring. Crows will use tools to extract food from inaccessible crevices and in the last few years have learned to drop walnuts (our walnuts!) in a quiet road where passing cars break them open allowing access to the nut within. Ravens, however, have the reputation for being the most intelligent of all. Corvids not only use their inventive intelligence for gathering food but, most endearingly, to play. Ravens have been observed tobogganing down snowy slopes on their backs - beak first, picture it -and then flying back up the slope for more fun. Crows have been filmed using a tin lid as a snowboard with a

February, 2016

snowy roof providing the skirun. These birds have clearly been enjoying themselves and, apart from keeping fit, the fun seems to have no biological role whatsoever. The raven, first observed tobogganing alone, went off to collect a friend and, after a quick demonstration, “like this!” the friend joined in with gusto. Look out for ravens “tumbling”. They do this sometimes to demonstrate their superior attractiveness to potential mates, it being a display of their flying abilities, but I have also seen one doing it when entirely alone in the sky. The bird flew across the sky in a wandering path and, occasionally, turned itself entirely upside down and then righted itself. It did this several times on a trajectory of about a quarter of a mile before disappearing. How can such fun birds have acquired such a bad reputation? I’ve run out of space and I haven’t even begun on the magpie... maybe I will return to the corvids at a later date. Meanwhile keep an eye out for them, they are worth watching.

Advertising Feature Ashley Down home to new state-of-the-art hot yoga studio A SUPER hi-tech, purpose-built hot yoga studio powered by 100% sustainable energy has opened in Ashley Down. Called Yogafurie, the studio is the brainchild of well-known Bristol practitioner Ed Wood and has the most advanced heating and air filtration system on the market, as well as only using eco-friendly energy sources. Ed, who worked in IT for 22 years, is fully trained in traditional yoga techniques and set Yogafurie as a portable hot yoga practice in 2011, operating mostly around the Gloucester Road area. Following sustained growth in demand for class places, Ed invested in the new custommade studio on Ashley Down Road. The studio has the only system specially-created for hot yoga studios installed as well as under floor heating and is believed to be the only one of its kind West of the London commuter belt. The reported health benefits of hot yoga are numerous and have famously seen the likes of tennis superstar Andy Murray

take it up as well as celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. People who practise hot yoga can help themselves detox, lose excess weight and they often also report increased immunity as well as an overall ‘feel good’ factor. Ed said: “It’s been an amazing journey – I certainly didn’t expect the class sizes to grow at the rate they did and we quickly had waiting lists for most of our hot yoga sessions. “I wanted to create a safe yet dynamic practice rooted in the deep traditions of yoga, but also grounded in the norms and expectations of a modern, progressive society. “Our students often have busy lives and want to get the most out of their experiences and so hot yoga really combines all the right elements for them.

“The final piece of the puzzle was creating a strong base in which to develop and teach to really help people who are dedicated to yoga and its benefits and the new studio is now the perfect place to do this.” Yogafurie is based at 201

If you have dental anxiety . . . you are not alone with Dr Catherine Spalding

I

F you suffer from dental phobia, you are not alone. 1 in 10 people have dental anxiety that makes them avoid visiting a dentist. Regular dental care is extremely important to your health. So if you do suffer from dental anxiety here are some techniques that may help. Dental anxiety means different things to different people. Maybe it is the thought that it might hurt? Maybe it is the smells and sounds that bring back memories of a bad experience? Maybe it is the thought of not being in control? Try and work out what it is that worries you most. Modern dental practices are generally much friendlier places. Advances in technology have improved dentistry so treatment can now be completely painless. Find an understanding dentist. Ask friends or family if they know a dentist who is good at looking after anxious patients. Tell the receptionist and/ or dentist or nurse that you are nervous. Remember the first

appointment is a simple check up. Use this time to talk to the dentist, explain your fears. I always give my patients time to talk and I listen. This way we can try and avoid any fear triggers and work out, together, the best way to proceed. Book your appointment early in the day. This avoids you worrying all day about your up and coming appointment. Bring a friend to help reassure you. Bring some music to listen too. Your favourite, relaxing music. Remember you are in control. It is your mouth. We give patients a stop signal. As simple as raising your hand means the dentist will know you need a rest. Build up to treatment gradually. Try a check up first, then maybe get your teeth cleaned. Build up your confidence gradually. Always remember you are not alone. The dentist is there to help you.

Hamish Wills, Sustainable Redland

Climate change and Air Transport

I

WROTE among other things about trying a car free day a week last month and walking, cycling or taking the bus to work. I’d like to reflect on air transport because we use it a lot, it seems relatively cheap and evidence suggests its

becoming cleaner and more fuel efficient. The UN panel on climate change estimates that air transport is responsible for 3.5% of man made change in our climate, but unless action is taken, it could grow to between 5 and 15% by 2050. We might like to think engineers will solve the problem through designing fuel efficient, cleaner burning jets, but they have a seriously long way to go, further than we realise. Sure, we’re grateful they’ve given us high speed, comfortable jet airliners, but these aircraft are no more fuel efficient per passenger mile than the piston driven airliners like the Constellations of the 1950s. If that’s the speed of progress for the first 60 years, what can we expect for the next? It’s true that measured against the earliest jet airliners, todays ones are more efficient, but not enough to write home about.

Biofuels in air transport have been shown to effective in reducing carbon output, various airlines having carried out successful pilot studies. But to fully satisfy our ever growing demand, the nation’s entire agriculture industry would have to be turned over to it, perhaps making us a little hungry in the process. Instead of building more runways and airports to manage demand the government could reduce it by removing subsidies and increasing airport taxes, but there’s always the danger we wouldn’t vote for them if they did. Removing incentives to fly would be an effective way of cutting emissions. Many people have free family holidays when they cash in the air miles they’ve earned flying to conferences for work. Credit card companies and banks push air miles, and although its nice to have cheap or free

seats, we would be very foolish not to count the damage caused by all the extra flying of this scheme. If we are serious about reducing our family carbon footprint, we need to look at ways of taking family holidays that do not involve flying, especially as there are great and fulfilling holidays to be had without it. It is easy to reach the Mediterranean by boat, train, bus and/or car, or anywhere else in Europe. Britain is made for holidays. If adventures in the Scottish Isles seem too cold, go to the semi tropics of the Scillies, or chunter along a piece of heavenly rural tranquility in a canal boat. The options are huge, and at no point do you have to deal with airports, delayed flights, middle of the night arrivals followed by long bus journeys.

February, 2016

Spare your knees

I

F you are heading off to the slopes this season then good skiing technique, instruction and practice are your best allies for skiing enjoyment and protection against accident and injury. One potentially vulnerable area of the body is your knees, and so here is a postural tip for the slopes - and like all postural principles, it holds good in your daily life too. Often our knees are actually the ‘innocent’ party, caught in the middle between problems that originate in the other joints at either end of the leg – that being poorly functioning ankles and feet, or a poorly positioned hip and pelvis. In photo (a), see how a tucked under tail, (often mistakenly taught as an ab strengthening, core stabilising, or lower back stretching exercise), will ruin a skier’s stance:

(a) Her weight topples forward because the pelvis is tucked. This stance also shortens the psoas and hamstring muscles, and sheers unwelcome force across the knee joint. In (b), our skier’s pelvis is gently allowed to angled the other way, which means that the hip joints can share the shock absorption in partnership with the knees and transfer force towards the more resilient heel bone. City Museum, entitled Death: The Human Experience. This comprehensive exhibition features five sections based on key human experiences of death - symbols of death; stages of death; attitudes to death; human remains; and science and ethics – and includes hundreds of objects and images relating to each aspect from different cultures around the world. These range from the familiarity of a stuffed crow, a wreath of lilies, and a porcelain mortuary table from the former Bristol General Hospital, to a reconstruction of a mediaeval plague doctor’s mask, a Ghanaian fantasy coffin in the shape of a rather fearsome-looking tiger, a 1900 watercolour copy by archaeologist Adela Breton of a Mayan temple wall painting featuring human sacrifice, and mummified body parts. These are presented alongside interactive features,

READING GROUP REVIEW: There were sharp differences of opinion within our group. Some committed readers abandoned a book they considered full of platitudes, over-long, undisciplined, and without narrative coherence – hey found it confusing and repetitive. Half the group really enjoyed it. The self-indulgent pursuit of every available red herring seemed to indicate both the immaturity and the curiosity of the narrator, though provided a compelling insight into the life of rain-drenched County Clare and its eccentric inhabitants. The author’s use of language is masterful; and while Ruth is restricted by her surroundings, her imagination has no boundaries. Many of us were drawn willingly into her funny, poignant, tragic world.

by Niall Williams

BLURB: Bedbound in her attic room, plain Ruth Swain is in search of her father. To find him, enfolded in the mystery of ancestors, Ruthie must first trace the jutting jawlines, narrow faces and gleamy skin of the Swains, from her restless great-grandfather, Reverend Swain, to grandfather Abraham, to her father, Virgil – via pole-vaulting, leaping salmon, poetry, and the three thousand, nine hundred and fifty eight books piled high beneath the two skylights in her room, beneath the rain.

Children’s Fiction - Read and enjoyed by Reuben Betts (age 12)

Bone

by Jeff Smith BLURB: Three modern cartoon cousins get lost in a pre-technological valley, making new friends and out-running dangerous enemies. Their many adventures include crossing the local people

in The Great Cow Race, and meeting a giant mountain lion called RockJaw: Master of the Eastern Border. They learn about sacrifice and hardship in The Ghost Circles and finally discover their own true natures in the climatic journey to The Crown of Horns. REUBEN’S REVIEW: Bone is a series of comic books in which the Bone family are cast out from Boneville. This family consists of Fone Bone, our hero; Phoney Bone, who is the main reason they were kicked out from Boneville; and Smiley Bone, who throughout the adventures remains undeniably cheerful and happy. Separated and lost, they find themselves in a valley filled with wonderful and strange creatures who try to help them from the dark forces conspiring against them. I liked this comic book as it sucks you in with jokes and adventure. It is good for people aged 8 and up. Show Less For these books and many more, visit us at Cheltenham Road Library. If we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, you can reserve any item from over 2 million across LibrariesWest and collect from a library of your choice for only £1 per item (free for young people 17 and under). OPENING HOURS: Monday: 10–1 & 2-5pm Wednesday: 10-1 & 2-5pm Friday: 10-1 & 2-5pm Saturday: 10-1 & 2-5pm

Spring soon... but frost still a danger

the air as long as possible to avoid the cold but then had a mad panic in May when the frost risk had passed and I had to tie them down very quickly before the growth got too long. This year I have decided to avoid this stress, take a risk and tie my stems down immediately leaving just one stem poking upwards as my insurance policy against frost. If the tied down stems get frost damaged I can tie the insurance stem down to make up for the loss. If there’s no frost damage by the end of May I can simply

MOST people are probably looking forward to spring arriving but I am secretly still enjoying my down time without the pressure of quick-growing vines and grass to contend with. As the 2015 Pinot noir rosé sits almost ready with the winemaker in the Mendips, my big task at the moment is the Spring pruning. I started earlier this year so am already about a quarter of the way through my 2500 vines. The process is fiddly but actually quite simple. The basic idea is to remove all of last year’s growth to leave just two or three long stems. These stems will form the basic framework of next year’s growth. Every year I modify what I’ve done and try new ways of doing things and every year different challenges and situations arise to test me! As I prune I am already thinking about the frost risk period between April and May when the vines have just started to grow but there is still a risk of frost damage to anything low to the ground. Last year I left all my stems poking up in

snip the insurance stem off. There’s no right or wrong way of doing this – it’s like gambling and is entirely dictated by the whims of the weather! On another note, nominations for the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2016 are open so if you have a spare minute please google, visit the website and nominate us for ‘Best Drinks Producer’! They are looking for more vineyard entries this year and while we are only a small producer I’d like to think we might be in with a chance. hello@dunleavyvineyards.co.uk www.dunleavyvineyards.co.uk @DYvineyards (twitter) dunleavy vineyards (facebook & Instagram)

I

HAVE just taken over as the neighbourhood beat manager for St Werberghs and Montpellier, which borders parts of Bishopston, St Andrews and Ashley Down, I want to introduce myself and reacquaint you with your local PCSOs, Claire Gardner and Ben John. Say hello if you see us out and about from time to time. I have been a police officer for 15 years and for the past 8 years I have been working as a response officer on the East Central district, responding to 999 and priority calls in the area. I’m now looking forward to taking on a more focussed role within the community. You may be interested to know that I am also a local resident and so the things that bother you are often going to be the same things that get me riled up! As my opener, I would like to share some really basic crime prevention lessons I have learned over the years about protecting our property. ● Be a good neighbour ; be that curtaintwitcher, know what’s going on in your road, why is that alarm going off? If something seems wrong, it very possibly is; ring 999 if a crime

is happening. Police officers like catching baddies, fact. ● Thieves are an opportunistic lot . Day or night, it really doesn’t bother them. ● If you’ve got it, don’t flaunt it . Don’t flash your smartphone when out and about. If you listen to music, keeping one ear free is a good way to stay aware of what’s going on around you. Don’t leave devices and gadgets lying around in view of the windows or in cars. ● Think bike, any bike. I don’t mean just when you are driving but instead imagine a thief’s glee when they tuck themselves away behind your 6ft privet hedge taking their time cutting your padlock and wheeling away your trusty commute. Make this as tricky and noisy as possible and cut back that shrub. ● Finders shouldn’t be keepers . A large amount of property is recovered but can’t be returned. Register your gear (phones, laptops, gadgets, bikes) on property websites www.immobilise. com or www.bikeshepherd.org . If you want to get in touch with us, please call 101 or email me joanna.sibson@ avonandsomerset.police.uk but in an emergency, always ring 999.

building a set in a studio, and finding props that would compliment the boldness of the fabrics without fighting for attention, or upstaging them. What makes magazine images of interiors look so good, apart from skill-full photography and lighting design, is what isn’t in the shot as opposed to what is. Being selective about what goes into the frame or scene, is critical. It must also satisfy the art director’s overall concept for the shoot, be that a very simple aesthetic, or the complex, highfalutin fantasy of an auteur. Including personal clutter is an obvious nono, but vital signs of human life are often found in stylish shoes or coffee table tomes, usually about fashion or design (you’ll start noticing them everywhere now!). Budgets are tight and everything must be sourced within a strict deadline, and beautiful books just happen to be the kind of thing that creative types often have to hand. There’s certainly plenty of unglamorous lugging about of heavy, awkward items, and waiting patiently while photographers work their magic. But it is fun, pleasurable and above all a privilege to be working with exquisite goods, making pretty pictures to be enjoyed. Insight to the role of interior design THIS month I thought I’d share one of my recent projects - styling a photoshoot for an up and coming textiles designer Blooming Bryony Designs - and some insight to the role an interiors stylist. The aim is usually to showcase a product in surroundings that the target consumer can relate to, yet with a touch of something special to elevate it from the everyday - to make it eye catching. In this instance that meant finding an appropriate London location, rather than

Bristol Property Centre Ashley Day – Manager

Tell us about your company? We are an estate agency doing sales lettings and property management for residential and commercial property based in Redland but covering the whole of Bristol. We are a small team of 5 giving us a good opportunity to know our customers personally. We recently won best agency at the national ESTA awards for the lettings side of our business.

What service do you provide to the people of Bishopston & Redland? We sell and let homes in the Redland and Bishopston area and can also give advice on property related issues. Were always happy to have a chat about any issue someone may have whether or not they are a customer of ours. We want to have a reputation of being a helpful estate agent so any questions are welcomed.

What is the best part of running your business and working in Bishopston & Redland? I have worked for agencies in other parts of Bristol but there feels to be a stronger feeling of community in comparison which suits the way we do business very well as we like to know all of our customers closely so we can advise them well on a personal level its great working on

Chandos Rd as I’m surrounded by food!

What makes your service different from other companies? I believe where we are different from other agencies is how when we sell your house you will be allocated a member of the team who you will deal with throughout the whole process. One of the top complaints about estate agents is being passed around various members of staff and communication. We have eliminated this as you will know exactly who to call and this also means they will have a great knowledge of your property as they would have spent the time with you at beginning. Our lettings service follows a similar philosophy.

What are your plans for the future of the business? Well we would love to expand into Bristol and try our fresh

approach further afield but only time will tell. The way we do things we cannot over stretch ourselves otherwise the main principle in having one point of contact will become harder to maintain so currently we are going to concentrate in serving the people of Bishopston and Redland.

News from Gloucestershire Cricket Club GLOUCESTERSHIRE batsman Gareth Roderick, 24, will remain at the Bristol County Ground until the end of season 2018 after signing a new contract. He says: “The stage I’m at in my career, the lads we have in the changing room and the success we had last year winning the Royal London OneDay Cup made it an easy decision.” In addition to the squad’s development on the field, Gareth says he has been impressed by the club’s growth off the pitch in recent years. He joined Gloucestershire in 2012 and since then the club has completely redeveloped the Bristol County Ground including opening a new state-of-the-art pavilion. It has hosted international men’s and women’s matches and will have floodlights installed in time for the first NatWest T20 Blast match in May. Gloucestershire head coach Richard Dawson said it was a great boost for the club to have secured Gareth’s services for three more years.
