From Page 1 park and ride, parking in the village and catching the number 1 bus into town. “I can’t say I blame them. If I was working in central Bristol, I’d probably do the same myself because of the high price of parking there. You can park here for free and get a bus into town it’s a no-brainer.” Many local traders share Julien’s concerns. Stuart Williams, owner of Westbury Inks, said: “I have known of three regular customers from Westbury going to our Henleaze shop because of the parking. I’ve noticed that I can’t park any more since the new restrictions. They are trying to make people want an RPS but all that does is

push the traffic elsewhere. We need more parking, a park and ride at Cribbs and affordable parking in the town centre.” There are two main car parks in Westbury Village, a number of one hour restricted bays, plus off-street parking available on the roads nearby. For a relatively small area, that could be considered adequate. However, there are a large number of elderly residents, some who may find walking longer distances difficult, a busy Primary Care centre servicing the area, an unregulated car park, plus a number of banks and businesses. There have been complaints for a while that commuters are using the village as a cut-through from the A4018 from Cribbs Causeway and there

News is now a strong suspicion that some commuters are using the free parking and taking a risk that they will get the occasional fine. Mr Carey has moved his delivery time from the afternoon to after work because he’s learnt that he’ll have a hard time trying to park back in the village again. “If I don’t get here by 7.45am, I have a problem parking. The commuters block up the whole village for people who want to park and use the shops. People tell me that they don’t come into Westbury as much as they used to for the same reason,” he said. One local business owner has started opening at the early hour of 7am to help his customers. Ian Duxbury, owner of C J Computing on Westbury Hill, explained: “Most of my clientele are elderly so can’t carry a computer any distance. I used to collect them but I can’t park when I come back any more. I open early now so that customers can drop off their computers before the parking is full. You

would be surprised at how many people come in. The problems we have in Westbury are terrible and it’s worse on a Friday when everyone comes to do their banking.” Poor parking has been having an effect on Julie Bakoff’s special occasion wear shop, Ladies Day. She said: “Customers have called me and cancelled appointments because they can’t park. I had a lady who left this week because she was worried about her car overstaying the one hour parking restrictions. I deal with a lot of older customers and they need to park close by.” David Antonio Smith, owner of Barber on Trym, moved his business from Redland, where he was in the RPS, to Westbury in December. He would like to see more pay and display parking within the RPS but to make it free for residents, as he explained: “I’m all for residential parking but something has to be done for businesses, or else we’ll close down. A lot of us rely on passing trade on a Monday-

Friday as most people work outside of the village. If someone can park they will spend time here, maybe get a coffee and look in a gift shop.” It is a subject that the local Neighbourhood Partnership and councillors are taking very seriously. Westbury-on-Trym councillor Geoff Gollop said: “Our local shops are the heart of our

community. If commuter parking is threatening their viability, we urgently need to review the parking arrangements that cause that. We need to debate the arguments for and against a parking zone and the possibility of parking charges. I am keen to find ways of ensuring that local parking is for local people and customers of local businesses and not just an all-day free car park.”

Welcome to Redmaids’ High

News that Redland High School and Red Maids’ School are to merge was a bombshell. But within days the shock and sadness gave way to excitement among parents, staff and – most of all – the girls about the prospects for the new school. Sue Thomas and Linda Tanner report

W

E are going to be a force to be reckoned with,” said Isabel Tobias, headmistress designate of the new Redmaids’ High School.

She was talking about the potential combined talents on the sports field, but the same could be said of other areas as Bristol’s two leading independent girls’ schools prepare to pool their resources. Both have a long history: The Red Maids’ School is the oldest girls’ day school in the UK and Redland High School was founded in 1882. From September 2017, two will become one when they embark on a new chapter as Red Maids’ High School. The school will be based at the Red Maids’ site in Westburyon-Trym. Sale of Redland High’s 18th century buildings at Redland Court will help fund improvements at Westbury to create 21st century facilities. The first phase, to be completed before the merger, includes an assembly hall, a performing arts centre and extra classrooms. Future plans include development of exceptional sports facilities, science and technology laboratories, and a new music and dance space. “This is a very exciting thing for girls’ education in Bristol. The city is going to have one strong independent day school,” Mrs Tobias told the Voice. Leaders at both schools point out that neither is on its

GIRLS from Redland High and Red Maids’ schools had their own story to cover for the BBC’s annual School Report day. The surprise merger announcement just a week earlier was an obvious subject for the young reporters, who discovered that pupils had more in common than they had realised. original site and each has made big changes over the decades to meet the needs of girls and young women in the city. “Sometimes governors have to make brave decisions for the present and for the future,” said Mrs Tobias. Announcing the decision on March 4, Dr Tim Chambers, chair of governors at Redland High School, said: “Redland Court inspires great affection, but educational expectations have changed significantly. Our confined city centre site and our beautiful 18th century buildings constrains the development of facilities and the growth of pupil numbers. The trustees have decided that to consolidate with Red Maids’, a like-minded school with a similar vision, ethos and approach to girls’ education, is the right way forward.” Jane MacFarlane, chair of governors at Red Maids’, will chair the governing body of the new school. She said: “Together we welcome our new future. We will deliver an outstanding academic education, together with opportunity and success in performing arts, science, technology and art. Alumnae of Redmaids’ High School will be the leaders of the future and will

The girls concluded: “Clearly, the two schools share a belief in exceptional education for girls and we are all looking forward to new facilities, new friends and new subjects. As it may mean a period of change, we feel that two schools with so much history and heritage can’t fail to be a success.

be well equipped to succeed in an increasingly competitive world market place.” Carol Lear, a former head at Redland High who previously taught classics at Red Maids’, will be honorary president of Redmaids’ High School. Mrs Tobias admitted that the announcement of the merger initially met with “absolute astonishment” and she acknowledged that many people had felt anxious and emotional “That is understandable. People of the city have been very attached to their schools – they love them. But I have been delighted at the many positive messages of support and encouragement. What has been wonderful is the way that parents, staff and girls at both schools have attended meetings, listened, asked questions and come up with ideas for how we can move forward carefully together.” The girls had led the way in suggesting how to bring people closer, Mrs Tobias added. Teams from both schools worked together on a BBC School Report project about the merger and the head girl teams from the two schools have already met. Perdita Davidson, deputy head at Redland High, echoed

the close connections that exist between students at the two schools and their families. “Bristol is a small city and many of the girls know each other outside school, from primary school or through Guides or sport,” she said. Some families have had children at both schools. Among them is Mrs Tobias: one of her daughters was head girl at Redland High while the other went to Red Maids’. Mrs Davidson, who will join the team of deputies at Redmaids’ High, said bringing together the huge individual strengths of the two schools would greatly benefit girls and staff. Students will have the

opportunity to study a wider range of subjects, particularly in the sixth form. Redland High girls will have the option of the International Baccalaureate, for which Red Maids’ is renowned, while A-level choices for Red Maids’ girls will expand to include history of art, computing, government and politics and photography. For two year groups - Year 12 and Year 7 – the merger at the Red Maids’ site will start in September 2016. Everyone else will move over 12 months later, having got to know one another through a series of trips, activities and social events. The junior schools will also merge at Westbury in September 2017, under the headship of Lisa Brown, while Redland High Infants with QEH will continue at its Redland base. “We wanted to make sure the students starting their A-levels and starting their secondary education were fully integrated from the start, rather than having the upheaval of a move after a year,” Mrs Davidson said. Staff will also work together

over the transition period, with Redland High staff all guaranteed a position at the new school. Stephanie Ferro, headmistress at Redland High since September, has chosen not to make the move. Mrs Davidson stressed that all the elements that were important to parents would remain, and be strengthened, in the new school. “We know parents think very carefully about their daughters’ education and want to offer them the very best. They expect class sizes that allow the individual education of the child to be at the centre. “Redland High and Red Maids’ both have an ethos where pastoral care is very important. The new school will have exactly the same attention to detail and will go beyond what either of us can offer separately,” she said. The schools will work together to resolve issues raised by parents, such as transport. The girls, meanwhile, are more concerned with redesigning their uniforms! More reaction: Page 6

PUTTING their heads together are the head girls of Redland High School and The Red Maids’ School. Redland’s Lucy Mercer and deputies Allie Jerrome and Alice Bird invited their counterparts from Red Maids’, head girl Lily Steven and deputy Katie Cottle, to have a look around Redland High. Lily and Katie brought over a picture they had designed depicting the boat logo of Red Maids’ surrounded by the Daisy Chain from Redland High School. Lily said: “We wanted to make something to show how excited we are about the merger and to show Redland High girls that we understand how they are feeling.” Allie added: “The picture was such a lovely gesture. It was so reassuring to find out straight away that both schools share the same caring ethos. It really means so much and shows that the future is exciting!”

My cat is going bald! Skin condition or stress?

H

AIR loss is a common symptom in cats. There are several possible causes, which often look the same, making it a frustrating condition to treat:

Parasites Fleas are by far the most common cause of hair loss, there is a big flea population in the city and all cats are probably exposed periodically. Many cats suffer from Flea Allergic Dermatitis (FAD) - an allergy to flea-bites. This causes severe itching, hair loss and scabby skin. The first step with any cat showing signs of hair loss is to ensure a thorough flea control program. This should treat all animals in the house as well as the environment in order to break the flea life-cycle. We always use prescription products, as many over-the-counter remedies aren’t strong enough. Other parasites such as mites and lice can also cause hair loss, though they are much less common.

Infection

identify.

Allergies FAD is the most common allergy in cats but they can also react to certain foods, pollens, dust mites and cleaning products. Diagnosis of allergies includes blood testing and diet trials.

Stress Cats often respond to stress by overgrooming, resulting in hair loss and occasionally secondary skin infections. They can react to any changes: moving house, building work, new cats in the neighbourhood, competition with other cats, loss of a companion, and changes in the family dynamic. First try to resolve the underlying issue but if this isn’t possible, then pheromone treatments (“Feliway”) and casein-based products (“Zylkene”) can be very effective. If your cat is showing signs of hair loss please call us at Animal House Vets!

Bacteria, yeasts or fungi can cause hair loss, redness, itchiness, scabs and oozing sores. These can be treated symptomatically with antibiotics or antifungals, however, most skin infections are secondary to an underlying condition which requires more investigation to

News Red Maids' High: 'A year from now, it will all feel like a positive step' THE announcement that Redland High School and the Red Maids’ School are to merge came as a complete surprise to parents, pupils and old girls. Redland High School will sell its Redland Court Road site to raise funds for the new Redmaids’ High School, which will operate out of the current Red Maids’ site in Westbury-on-Trym. Red Maids’ old girl, Valerie Peters, expressed her astonishment at the decision. She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard. None of us could. It is the oldest girls’ school in the country but it could be a very good opportunity for both schools.” Plans for the merger have been in discussion since January, however, due to a confidentiality clause, parents were not informed until the merger was confirmed. Caroline Hunt is the mother of a pupil at Redland High School. She explained that feelings have run high about the merger: “If parents had wanted to send their children to a bigger school, they would have chosen it in the first place. I was initially disappointed that the school was merging, as I liked the fact that it is small, but I am relieved that the school isn’t closing down. “We ended choosing Redland High School because my daughter didn’t get into Redland Green. “That we have a place is a bonus and a year from now, it will all feel like a positive step.” There is a feeling of sadness throughout the community about the news, especially for Redland High School, which will vacate the site where it has been located since 1882. Former pupil Jane Bussell has kept her links over the years with Redland High School through the Old Girls Guild. She felt very sad when

she heard the news about the merger. “It is the end of an era. It is a school with a great history and I feel that a lot of it will be lost. Redland Court is a great building and I wonder what will happen to it?” she said. “It is a small school and that has a lot of benefits. When I was there, in the 1950s, it was big enough for education as it was then but perhaps not as it is today.” The view from the past was shared by Pamela Stirratt, who attended Red Maids’ School from 19421947. She was awarded the school needlework prize and, until recent years, has been active committee member of the Old Girls Society. Pamela explained: “I loved the whole time I was there and was really sad when it was time for me to leave. I remember Queen Mary visiting the school and I looked forward to going every single day.” “I was shocked when I heard about it. I think it will be a good thing but it’s going to be a massive school now. I was surprised that Red Maids need to do it.” Girls from both schools have been forging links over the past few weeks and have made met together to make a video report about the new Redmaids’ High School for BBC School Report. Mother of a Red Maids’ pupil, Anna KingtonMillar, reflected on her reaction to the merger. She said: “I think that everyone is really positive at Red Maids’ and we look forward to working with Redland High in a collaborative way. It won’t affect my daughter for a couple of years, until the current Year 7 girls merge in year 9, as not all the pupils are going over at the same time There is a buzz around the playground and it’s about what the new uniform will be like.” Proud histories: Pages 34-35

News MP of Bomber Command hero asks the Government to think again over medal decision

THE Government should review the decision to give members of Bomber Command - including last surviving Dam Buster ‘Johnny Johnson’ - just a clasp instead of a medal, according to the war hero’s MP. Charlotte Leslie, MP for Bristol North West, has urged Prime Minister David Cameron to meet Mr Johnson to discuss the matter further. Mr Johnson, from Westburyon-Trym, has expressed his disappointment at the decision, recommended by an independent advisory body. Veterans of Bomber Command, which suffered the highest casualty rate of any military unit during the war, have campaigned for decades for the medal. According to a national newspaper: “Those who fought in specific campaigns such as

Africa, Italy, the Pacific, Burma or France had their own separate medal for that campaign, and Bomber Command veterans have long argued that their campaign in the skies over Nazi Germany, which lasted for the entire war and was the only offensive action in Germany between Dunkirk and D-Day, deserved its own medal.” Mr Johnson, 94, spoke out recently at a fundraising event to raise money for an education centre to be built at the International Bomber Command Centre near Lincoln. He told the Daily Telegraph: “There is still a strong resistance to the creation of a Bomber Command medal. There has been a clasp issued which has to be attached to one of the existing medals. To me that is an insult and I have one, but I have yet to wear it. It is still in its box.”

Now his MP Charlotte Leslie says the decision to deny Bomber Command a medal ‘defies basic common sense’. In a letter to Mr Cameron she said: “I do appreciate the actions taken by this government to recognise Bomber Command but I also ask what measures can be taken to review this decision, and to award those who fought in Bomber Command, and perhaps also Fighter Command, the medals the British public know and understand they deserve. “I am unrepentantly supportive of my exceptional constituent, Johnny Johnson, who expresses his profound disappointment that the level of recognition given to Bomber Command does not merit a medal. He is a man, like many of his contemporaries, whose focus is on giving back, duty and service, not on self.”

9

The International Bomber Command Centre will, for the first time, consolidate the heritage of Bomber Command through the first-hand memories of those that served, suffered and supported. The project has been validated by the veterans and families of those that served, internationally, and has thus far raised over £5million, through private donations. However, in order to complete the educational, heritage preservation and engagement aspirations of the project it must now find an additional £3.8 million to complete the building of the Chadwick Centre. If this funding cannot be secured there is a chance that none of the rapidly diminishing group of veterans will survive to see their legacy opened.

News Friends of Badock’s Wood win two Green awards THE Friends of Badock’s Wood scooped two awards in the Bristol Green Volunteers Awards. The group were chosen for the Volunteers for Nature Award and Group Secretary, Frances Robertson, was given a special accolade, the It Doesn’t Stop Here Award for her continuing commitment as a volunteer for Bristol community projects. Frances said: “We are delighted and I am personally really honoured. So many volunteers we heard about at the awards evening do so much. As a volunteer I know that we do this for the love of a place or organisation we volunteer for, but it is still really lovely for the group as a whole and me as an individual to be recognised in this way.” The group award was for volunteer projects that help to make Bristol a nature-rich and wildlife-friendly city, help bring people together and help communities to conserve and

restore nature in Bristol and beyond. Badock's Wood lies between Southmead and Westbury-onTrym and is a hidden haven for wildlife, a public open space and a designated Local Nature Reserve. The Friends of Badock’s Wood was set up in the year 2000. The group aims to ensure that the Badock’s Wood Local Nature Reserve is maintained and protected as a nature reserve for the mutual benefit of both wildlife and people. Frances added: “If anyone has yet to visit Badock's Wood, they should! We have organised a programme of guided walks in the wood along with conservation and litter picking dates. The programme will be in a leaflet in local libraries and on our website www.fobw.org.uk where you can also read more details about the wood, its location, and its history.”

Education Clifton High School Junior pupils make a splash!

CLIFTON High School Junior pupils made an impact this Spring with their performance of the Craig Hawes musical Splash!. A comic retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark, the play was performed by Year 4 pupils. They delighted the audience with their joyful singing, riveting storytelling and hilarious jokes. The pupils performed confidently and clearly, enjoyed every minute of their time in the limelight, and parents, grandparents, siblings and friends had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Pupils in the junior school are encouraged to take part in the many music and drama activities. Musicals are performed twice yearly by Year 4 and Year 6 pupils respectively. Pupils across the Junior School take part in the Christmas play, with Year 5 pupils taking a lead. Junior pupils are also encouraged to take part in the School’s annual production which has included

popular plays and musicals such as Comedy of Errors, Annie and The Sound of Music. Performing at these events is one of the many ways in which pupils at Clifton High School are encouraged to feel part of the school community; it gives them a real sense of achievement and helps develop their self confidence. Pupils receive weekly music lessons from the junior school’s specialist music teacher and are offered a range of one-toone instrumental lessons from visiting music teachers, covering a wide range of instruments from drums to cello and violin. Music is integral to the life of the school, and pupils relish the opportunity to perform, whether it be singing or on a musical instrument, at the annual musical soirée, the end of term concert, and at the end of year Rose Day celebrations and Christmas carol service at Bristol’s two cathedrals.

Jack and Jill Preschool celebrate an Outstanding Ofsted Inspection She also complimented the staff who she said ‘skilfully identify and work with children’s interests to promote their learning. Children are motivated and eager learners; they make excellent progress and are well prepared for their next steps in learning and school.’ Charlotte Leslie joined the children in some of the spring time activities they were doing and enjoyed chatting to the staff and children. Charlotte complimented the management team and the staff on running such a successful preschool and was very impressed with the quality of childcare on offer. The children wished her well with a big chorus of ‘Thank you’ after she joined them all for a photo in the garden. The Preschool has recently been taken over by Claire and Andy Hollingdale. They said, “We feel really privileged to work with such a well established and successful early years team. We

are looking forward to building on the excellent reputation Jack and Jill has provided to the local community over the past 34 years and would like to thank and congratulate all the staff and children who have contributed.” Former owner and Managing Director, Julie Claridge, said: “I am incredibly proud of what

QEH recently hosted Congress to Campus , an American politics conference, featuring two former members of the US Congress. Students at the school had the opportunity to question former congressmen Larry LaRocco and Kenneth B Kramer on a range of issues, including the effects of lobbyist money on legislative decision-making, the future of US foreign policy and the use of political adverts in US campaigns. Stephen Holliday, headmaster at QEH, said: “We were delighted to host this event, as part of our full and varied annual programme of events. Our students were particularly interested to hear from Mr LaRocco and Judge Kramer on some key issues within American politics and the ‘Super Tuesday’ results.” Larry LaRocco, Democrat, represented the state of Idaho in Congress, serving on the influential House Financial Services Committee and the House Natural Resources

New bus service to Southmead Hospital A CHANGE to the bus timetables from April 24 will enable Henleaze residents to take the bus directly to Southmead hospital. Following feedback from residents on the No. 77, Henleaze councillors contacted the bus operators directly to see if they’d provide a more frequent direct service to the local hospitals and have had positive result. Wessex buses have announced a new service from Henleaze to Southmead. The number 2 bus service will run from Broadmead through Henleaze to Southmead Hospital via Whiteladies Road, Westbury Road, North View, Northumbria Drive, Henleaze Road, Southmead Road, Doncaster Road, Greystoke Avenue, Pen Park Road and Monks Park Avenue. The service will operate every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays

(no Public Holiday service). The buses will not be able to go up to the hospital entrance until June, due to road improvements the hospital is currently carrying out. The Wessex 1 service is being reduced to three buses per hour

Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays (no Public Holiday service). With up to six No. 1 buses (First & Wessex) being reported at one stop, this reduction should not cause a problem. There will

Traffic consultations RESIDENTS of North View have a week left to leave their comments about the suggestion that the bus stop on North View should be moved to site near the taxi stand by the Westbury Park Tavern. This would provide more level access for people with limited mobility and would offer space for a bus shelter. Double yellow lines are proposed around the Coldharbour Road/Linden Road traffic lights as some of this area is currently covered by single yellow lines. Leaflets setting out the proposed changes are available at Henleaze Library and via the NP3 website: http://www.activenp.co.uk/2016/03/proposals-forrevised-parking-arrangements-in-north-view-and-coldharbourroad/ and the Council’s Consultation Hub https://bristol. citizenspace.com/ The closing date for submitting comments on these consultations is April 3.

Jazz legend Pee Wee Ellis and BBC’s Livvy and Chrissie visit hospice JAZZ superstar Pee Wee Ellis visited St Peter’s Hospice in Westbury-on-Trym in March where he put on a special performance for patients, staff and volunteers. Pee Wee visited along with award-winning BBC Radio Bristol hosts Livvy and Chrissie who performed their new charity single ‘Hot ‘N’ Bothered’. The legendary sax player, who played with James Brown’s band, spent time with patients, many of whom were fans. Speaking about the visit, Pee Wee said: “I’m originally from Florida but I now live in Frome; I love this part of the world. Bristol is a great city and it’s been wonderful to find out more about some of the amazing work charities are doing in the region. “St Peter’s Hospice does incredible work, helping people at the worst possible time in their lives. Making them comfortable and supporting their family members is tough work but I’ve seen first-hand how special it is. The hospice is a really uplifting place and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to visit.” Livvy and Chrissie, usually known for their popular, awardwinning Saturday show on BBC Radio Bristol, have released ‘Hot ‘N’ Bothered’, featuring Pee Wee, to raise money for Sport Relief. Pee Wee plays the saxophone on the track and the accompanying music video features Pee Wee and the band, along with Olympic athletes Sharron Davies, Iwan Thomas, Katherine Merry and Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies. They said: “It was lovely to be able to show Pee Wee around St Peter’s Hospice and introduce him to all the inspirational people there. The patients were delighted to meet him and especially excited to see him perform. We’re really hoping the single raises a fantastic amount for Sport Relief.” Head of supporter relations at St Peter’s Hospice, John Flanagan, said: “It was wonderful to have Pee Wee, Livvy and Chrissie visit us. As always visits like this really brighten

Pee Wee pictured above and right, meeting a patient

a patient’s day and the added excitement of a special musical performance really lifted spirits and will stay with us all for a long time.” As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,000 patients each year as well as supporting family members. All services are provided free of charge but this care costs around £19,000 a day. For around £14,000 of that, the hospice relies on gifts in wills, kind donations and funds generated by the hospice shops. News Community leaders awarded Lord Mayor’s Medals TWO prominent members of Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership, Gay Huggins and Wendy Hull, have been presented with a Lord Mayor’s Medal at an annual award ceremony this month in recognition of their work in the local community. Gay has been the caretaker of Stoke Bishop village hall for 12 years and has helped to raise considerable funds. She is an active member of the Neighbourhood Partnership and NP sub committees and has recently acquired funding for hanging baskets and a notice board in Stoke Bishop. She said: “It’s like an honour for keeping the community spirit alive for years and one that I didn’t expect. I enjoy doing it and I feel so proud. I’ve had lovely emails and phone calls congratulating me and it makes me feel very good.”

Wendy is the organiser of the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme for the Neighbourhood Partnership and coordinates the charity, ‘Contact the Elderly’. She was as surprised as Gay to receive the award: “It is nice that the work I do is recognised and it was great to hear about the amazing work being carried out all around the city,” she said. Gay and Wendy were presented with their medals along with other community leaders by Bristol’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Clare CampionSmith at the Mansion House in Clifton. Clare said: “These medals are a great way of recognising the selfless work of individuals who work hard on behalf of their community. This year, we have another selection of very worthy winners who should all wear their medals with pride. “I would like to thank all of those people who submitted

News Elmlea Library Opens THE new library at Elmlea school in WestburyonTrym received a grand opening at a special ceremony last month. Pupils and teachers met with Lord Mayor of Bristol, Cllr Clare Campion-Smith, local MP Charlotte Leslie, and children’s authors, the Etherington Brothers to celebrate the opening of the new building. The design and state of the art equipment of the light and spacious library are thanks to the generosity of parent, Richard Blunden, Managing Director of Bristol business Moduflex. Richard put his company’s resources and that of external library design consultancy Proxemic Design, at the school’s disposal. Head Teacher Clare Galliers expressed her delight at the result. “There has been a strong sense of adventure for us in the way this project has developed over the last few months. Now we can share it with the whole school community,” she said. The Etherington Brothers, creators of popular comic books and films including “Freaky and Fearless”, “Malcolm Magic” and “Monkey Nuts”, talked to the children about the many different ways inspiration can be found when writing and illustrating

stories. Clare added: “This project has shown just how supportive of the school our staff and parents are. “Now we have this superb

27 New Opening Hours for Westbury Library FROM Monday 4th April Westbury Library adopts new opening hours: 2-7pm on Monday and 11-4 from Tuesday to Saturday. Westbury-on-Trym Cllr Geoff Gollop said: “It is difficult to remember that only a year ago our library was under threat of permanent closure, so although hours are reduced, at least we still have a library available, and it is planned that from the summer there will be some available access outside of opening hours with use of a library card for access.” Members of the Save Westbury Library campaign had an informal meeting with staff from the Library service. Geoff added: “The community campaigned to save the library and now we must play our part in helping to promote it.”

News Flowers in Westbury will carry on blooming! THE Westbury-on-Trym Society has issued a very big thank you to Sue Boyd and Arthur Brice for all they have done for the reputation of both the Society and Westbury itself during the last twelve years. They have carried on a tradition started by Roger Smith and Arthur in the 1980s, when they installed and planted up the first pots around the War Memorial. With the addition of many more pots around the village, together with painstaking work by Sue to encourage businesses to sponsor hanging baskets, Westbury has become famous for its summer flowering and its succession of pop up tulips in spring! Hilary Long, chairman of the WotSoc, said: “Even if the general public still think “it‘s

the council what’s done it”, we all know how much hard work behind the scenes has gone on regularly every year to create and maintain such glorious displays.” In order to pay for the displays once Blaise Nurseries took over the provision and planting, a great deal of money was required. So they, together with Chris Muddiman and Hazel Burston, established Westbury in Bloom and an annual house to house collection of funds. The result has been ten successive triumphs for Westbury in winning ‘Best shopping Area’ trophies in the Bristol in Bloom annual competitions. Hilary added: “We are very sad to see them retire but realise it must happen sometime! "The Society as a whole and

Sue Boyd, third left, and Arthur Brice in the hole Westbury especially owe them enormous gratitude. "The best way we can express it, is to find the time and the volunteers to continue making our rather plain village look

splendid with flowers all year round, thereby encouraging people to visit and enjoy the displays when doing their banking and day to day shopping.”

News Glenise Morgan stands down as Henleaze councillor AS I am standing down in May after 7 years, this is my final contribution as a Henleaze councillor and I’m using it to highlight two citywide campaigns that I support. I hope you will too! In March I signed up to two campaigns, firstly www. bristolwalkingalliance .org. uk. The Bristol Walking Alliance is a consortium of individuals and organisations campaigning for a safe and pleasant walking environment. Bristol Civic Society and Sustrans are members and several Neighbourhood Partnerships (NPs). I proposed that our Henleaze, Stoke Bishop & Westbury-on-Trym NP join too as we share many of the same priorities. Our NP Environmental

group will discuss this when they meet on 28 April. www. spaceforcycling bristol .org.uk Space4Cycling also campaigns for a better environment, one where there is protected safe cycling, segregated from drivers and from pedestrians, not just by a white line down a tarmacked path but by physical barriers such as low hedging. We know that our older people feel very vulnerable when space is shared, especially if they have a hearing or sight impairment. More locally, I have been supporting Safer Routes to Schools , through Park & Stride (St Ursula’s), 5 min walking zones (Henleaze) and improvements coming to roads around St Ursula’s and the Henleaze/Claremont school

campus. As well as the obvious health benefits, if children feel confident walking and cycling to school, we should see a reduction in traffic at morning rush hour and less pressure on parking spaces. I will encourage more walking and cycling as we work with the project manager for the new Redmaids’ High School to look at the impact on traffic of any expansion and ensuring early engagement with neighbours. Finally, the Downs Committee have been looking at a Place & Movement Framework report, described as a once in a generation opportunity for changes that meet our 21 st century transport and leisure needs. For example, the Westbury Road pavement is signed as shared space for

Redland High School: the proud history 1882 Redland High School is founded by Reverend Rose as a school for his daughter & three other girls. The houses at 27 & 28 Redland Grove are purchased and the school quickly expands to cater for 47 pupils, with Miss Elizabeth Cocks as Headmistress. 1885 The school lists 154 pupils on the register, and moves to Redland Court, an 18th century Palladian style mansion, recently purchased for £5,500. The school selects the daisy as the school flower as it is regarded as virtuous since it opens to light and closes to darkness. 1897 A successful campaign to enable girls from other areas to attend the school results in the opening of Redland Station. A boarding house is set up in 36 and 38 Clarendon Road, which remains until the 1930s. 1905 The school motto, ‘So Hateth She Derknesse’ is carved on a wooden panel in the assembly hall to celebrate the school’s 21st anniversary. RHS is able to offer 10% of places free from 1907, on receipt of increased grants from the Bristol Education Committee. Further funding for places is provided between 1926 and 1975 by the Direct Grant scheme. 1939 Air raid shelters are constructed in the cellars at the beginning of WWII and the school is not evacuated, unlike others in Bristol. Bombs land on the school roof, but quick action prevents the major damage and school buildings come through the war unscathed. After the war, pupil numbers rise to 461 but the last intake of boys in the infants is in 1945. 1975 RHS becomes an independent girls school. Buildings purchased over the years to enable the school to expand include the site of the Junior School at No. 1 Grove Park, and Nos 7, 9 & 10 Woodstock Road. 1993 4 Redland Court Road is purchased for classrooms. 1999 A purpose built ICT suite is costing £300,000. 2014 RHS infants (girls) and QEH initiative (boys) established in 2014 and will remain on site after the move. 2016 The merger with the Red Maids’ School in Westbury-onTrym is announced, plus the new school name: Redmaids’ High School.

The Red Maids’ School: the proud history 1634 The Red Maids’ School is founded in 1634 by John Whitson, Lord Mayor and MP for Bristol. Despite having three daughters, he outlived them all, and he left his estate for the founding of a unique establishment, The Red Maids Hospital. The school opened in Denmark Street in central Bristol with 12 pupils wearing their distinctive red cloth uniforms, and their Mistress, Mrs Greenwell. 1654, further money is left by John Whitson’s widow to provide accommodation for 40 orphaned or abandoned girls and two teachers. 1791 Education, beyond reading and sewing, begins. The older girls are expected to learn to write and count. By the beginning of the 19th century, they are reported to be learning reading, writing, arithmetic, sewing and housewifery, singing and Scripture. 1830 Alderman Daniel, an influential local politician, doubles the number of girls in the school during the 1830s and a new building is opened to house 140 boarders. 1911 The school moves from its central Bristol base to Burfield country house in Westbury-onTrym, then in open countryside north of Bristol, where it remains today. 1934 A new block of buildings are opened in celebration of the school’s 300-year anniversary. These include a gym, art room, laboratory, library & new classrooms. The amount of day girls increases to 140, and provision is made for 80 boarders. A mixture of John Whitson’s legacy, bursaries and the Direct Grant Scheme enables girls from a wide range of backgrounds to benefit from education at the school. Many new buildings have been added in recent years, including the assembly hall and the library. There are now over 500 students who are soon to be joined by those from Redland High School. John Whitson’s importance to the school is celebrated each year on Founder’s Day, November 19th, when the school processes through the streets of Bristol in full red ceremonial uniform to a service at Bristol Cathedral where his will is read aloud.

Bristol Walk Fest 2016 – walk this way! IT’S back! Bristol Walk Fest is the UK’s largest urban celebration of walking, and coming to a neighbourhood near you! From 1 st – 31 st May 2016, Walk Fest’s packed programme will offer you a great opportunity to explore Bristol, meet new people, learn something new and enjoy some fresh air and exercise. The programme features over 170 walks and events from more than 70 organisations and covers a wide range of themes, activities and interests. This year there are many returning favourites, but also some new

organisations and walks. Some of the highlights include a tour of Montpelier street art, May 7, an after dark walk in Arnos Vale, May 13, Stoke Park History Walk, May 13, and plenty of Downs walks. Each walk has an easy-tofollow grading and description, with most being offered free of charge and there really will be something for everyone. Bristol has masses of green spaces, waterways and cultural & community venues to explore, and what better way to discover them, than on foot, connecting with other walkers. Last year, when asked what they got from being part of the festival, the largest proportion of walkers (77%) said that they learnt new things. As Bristol is a city of learning in 2016, why not join in and discover something you never knew about your neighbourhood? The festival launches on Thursday 28th April with a ‘Compass Walk’. Starting mid-

morning from four corners of Bristol, walkers will converge on the City Centre for a celebration and refreshments just after 5pm. Walkers can join for one or two shorter sections or an entire ‘compass’ route! Walks will take place all across Bristol and on every

single day in May. For more information and to find walks near you head to www. bristolwalkingfestival.co.uk. Printed programmes will be available from local and central libraries and the Tourist Information Centre from early April.

ELECTION 2016

April, 2016

Candidate profiles THIS May, Bristol’s Mayor, Police and Crime Commissioner and our local councillors are all up for election. As we prepare for an onslaught of strangers knocking on our doors in an effort to persuade us to vote for them, the Henleaze & Westbury Voice have asked each of the candidates standing for council in the newly combined Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze ward to tell us why they are standing and what they hope to achieve if elected as councillor. Three councillors will be chosen to represent the ward, which has been redrawn following last year’s citywide Ward Boundary Review. If you would like to vote and haven’t already registered, do so by Monday April 18 by using the link www.bristol.gov.uk/ votingelections/ registertovote or visit your local library. If you want to apply for a postal vote for these elections the council need to receive your application by 5pm on Tuesday 19 April. Elections take place on May 5. 'At time of going to press, the following profiles had been received.

Liz Radford

Alastair Watson

I STARTED fundraising for Leukaemia Research at thirteen, after my brother lost his fight with the disease. I became chairperson for the Bristol Branch in 2005; making a difference is hugely rewarding. After marrying a Westbury-on– Trym lad and moving to our ward 15 years ago, my three children and I watched friends move away from the area, due to the lack of secondary school provision. Inspired by the “doers” of St Peters and Westbury Park Churches I resolved to change this and became a founding member of Parents Voice. Bristol Free School is now in its fifth year, Henleaze & Westbury Park Youth Group is in its seventh year and today more children survive Leukaemia than ever before. My message is that people power, communities pulling together, can move mountains. As a finance manager I am also pragmatic. If elected I would be honoured to serve as your local councillor.

I HAVE been a hard-working and committed councillor for the last six years, with the privilege of serving as Lord Mayor of Bristol in 2014/15. I have a particular interest in schools and youth employment, and have been cabinet member for Children and Young People, as well as serving on many other committees and scrutiny commissions. I am currently chairing a working group to set up an engagement hub to encourage young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider careers in the digital, high tech, and creative industries. In Westbury and Henleaze I have been involved in the campaign to set up the Free School and increase primary places. I will continue to support the business community to keep our local shopping centres vibrant. If you vote for me, I will energetically represent all residents, making sure your taxes are well spent by the Council, reducing waste in local government. I will campaign for adequate secondary school places, sensible parking schemes and reduced congestion on our roads.

GEOFF Gollop has lived in Henleaze for 25 years, married to Bernice, with 2 children in their early twenties. Geoff has been councillor for Westbury-on-Trym for the last 15 years. Geoff believes that Westbury and Henleaze deserve proper public service, most recently leading the campaign to keep Westbury Library open, in the past helping to achieve improvement to Canford Park play areas, as well as continued lobbying to provide more school places. Geoff sees the importance of maintaining our local communities by ensuring that new planning applications are appropriate for our residential neighbourhood. A chartered accountant by profession, Geoff has run his own business and has used those financial skills throughout his time on Council. Since 2012, he has been Deputy to the Elected Mayor and a member of the cross party Cabinet with responsibility for budget and finance. He was Lord Mayor of Bristol in 2011/12.

I AM a retired mathematics teacher and was first elected to Bristol City Council in May 2006. I was the lead member for Children’s Services in a Liberal Democrat administration and one of our challenges was providing enough primary school places for a rapidly expanding child population. Education has improved dramatically in Bristol over the last 10 years but there is still some way to go. I am proud of Bristol and its innovative approach. I want all young people to share in the benefits this brings. I am privileged this year to serve as Lord Mayor and my project is to encourage more girls into technology and science and break down some of the stereotyping that still takes place and is often unnoticed and unacknowledged. I am married; we have two children and two grandsons. I am an active member for the Methodist Church and my relaxations are walking and listening to music.

I AM standing for election to be your local Councillor on May 5th. If you vote for me, this is what you get: • My experience – I am 65 and have worked for three local authorities, two government departments and four regulatory bodies. I know how to make bureaucracy work to solve people’s problems • My time – I have no paid job and have given up most other commitments, except pro bono work with the NHS blood transfusion service • My support – I value the many public-spirited people who work to make our community better. I won’t take over (still less take credit for) their efforts but as your elected Councillor I would encourage, advise and fight their corner • My commitment – I prefer working with others: I don’t seek to be in a minority of one, but I’m willing to be if this is right. I’d represent the residents, not the establishment.

ON May 5th I am standing as one of your Liberal Democrat Council candidates. You may be asking, who are you? And more important, what can you give to the role of councillor? I am a 30-year-old woman coming to this election full of youthful energy, local knowledge and mature dedication, ready to listen and to work with you in making our ward thrive. I attended The Red Maids’ School and now live here as a young professional working in the city. I was a Barrister at Law before successfully running my own company in a male dominated industry for 4 years before returning to Law. This has given me the strength of character and skills needed to be a successful councillor for you: organised, tenacious, dependable, and approachable with above all a sense of community spirit. Make your councillor work for you and your future, vote for me on May 5th.

Labour Party candidates

I came to Bristol from Cambridge to train to be a teacher when I was 18 and liked Bristol so much that I've stayed ever since. I taught in Bristol schools for 34 years, 26 of them at WestburyonTrym CofE Primary where I piloted the first jobshare in teaching in Bristol. I became an Advanced Skills Teacher for Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) in 2005 and worked across Bristol from Nursery to Secondary Schools. I'm a strong believer in involving pupils in democracy and supported School Councils. I organised School Council Parliaments for groups of schools across the city involving pupils aged 8 to 18 and trained pupils in Peer Mediation and staff in the Certificate of PSHE. I believe the life skills pupils learn in PSHE are invaluable and am keen to see PSHE as a compulsory subject in our schools. I am a mother of two grown up children.

Candidates to be announced (UKIP)

“I would like to make people aware that UKIP is the only party which is totally committed to securing our borders and controlling who comes and leaves our country and ultimately, our city.” says Cllr Michael Frost, Hengrove. The Bristol Branch of the UK Independence Party was founded to bring together people of different backgrounds and ages, who believe in making a better Bristol & UK. We believe in the minimum necessary government which defends individual freedom, supports those in real need, takes as little of our money as possible and doesn’t interfere in our lives. We believe in democracy devolved to the people, through national and local referendums on key issues. I HAVE lived in Bristol for six years and in WestburyonTrym for the last two. My family is diverse: I have an Indian/English background and my husband is German/Czech. We have two young daughters aged 2 and 4 years. I have worked in Marketing and Funding and Development within the Arts and Charities Sector but five years ago, after caring for my granny and deciding to start a family of my own, I retrained as a Massage Practitioner and set up a Holistic Therapies business. More recently, I set up a second business in fashion retail. I am an active member of Amnesty International and Greenpeace and as our children grow up, I am keener than ever to bring about change. I believe the best place to start is the place we live. I love the local communities of Westbury and Henleaze and their place in the buzzing, vibrant city of Bristol, but there is much to maintain and improve, from roads and parking to our green spaces and public services not to mention support for local businesses.

News Charity cheque helps change lives

BRISTOL North National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) have been presented with a £200 cheque at Southmead Hospital. Lisa Godber, Community Life Champion from ASDA Patchway made the presentation as the charity came first in the store’s Community Life scheme. Colleagues at the ASDA Patchway store, had a number of charities to choose from and, after much deliberation they awarded runners-up Lawrence Weston Community Transport and 178th Bristol Brownies £50 each. NASS member and AS sufferer, Rowena Sutcliffe said: “The difference that the money will make will be huge, as it will mean we can continue to pay for the hydrotherapy and gym sessions on a weekly basis. Each week it costs £72.50 to run the

joint sessions, we do charge for the facilities but there is also ways a shortfall we have to make it affordable for sufferers who are in receipt of benefits or may not work many hours due to ill health.” Bristol North NASS group has been established since March 1998 and meet every Wednesday evening in Southmead Hospital, to get specialist physiotherapy exercise. Ankylosing Spondylitis sufferers can either use the hydrotherapy pool or the gym to help with their Arthritis. When Lisa came to hand over the cheque to the group, she saw AS sufferers exercising in the gym and also she viewed the hydrotherapy pool where AS sufferers. They explained more about what the group did and the support that they give to the AS

Westbury accountant opens third office SIX years after setting up TaxAssist Accountants in Westbury-on-Trym to provide specialist tax and accountancy services to the small business community, local accountant Ali Redwood is expanding, opening a third office in Clifton. Ali set up TaxAssist Accountants in 2009 and now has more than 220 small business clients across her Westbury and Portishead offices. In response to growing demand for specialist tax and accountancy advice tailored to small businesses in the area, Ali has decided the time is right to open a third office in Clifton. Ali currently leads a team of six and is planning to recruit further in the next few months. She said: “We have a number of clients in and around Clifton already and demand for our services continues to grow. We’ve been thinking about opening in Clifton for a while and when we saw the shop front office on Queens Road, we knew it was the ideal location.”

Update on Cafe Grounded plans for Henleaze site

CAFE Grounded are still set to open in the vacant site beside Waitrose and the Orpheus Cinema in Henleaze. The cafe bar chain had hoped to open this Spring but their application has been with the planning office for the last six months and is still in the process. Grounded have noted local concerns about late night noise, as they plan to open until 11pm on Thursday to Saturday nights, and have stated that the monthly evenings when they host musicians will be low key events and that the music will be over by 9pm. The Henleaze area already has quite a few cafes, as does nearby Westbury Park. Grounded plan to tailor the business to offer an extended choice to the options available locally, rather than take away custom from neighbouring businesses.

Katie Taylor of Grounded said: “It is quite frustrating at the moment as things are taking a while and we are keen to get cracking. We are positive that it will push through planning and are open to concerns that local people want to raise. “We offer a casual evening vibe and would like to provide a hub for local residents.” See their website cafegrounded.co.uk for the latest updates.

'Voice' appeal for volunteers results in recruitment success A TOTAL of 16 new volunteers have signed up to help out at local St Peter’s Hospice shops following an appeal printed in last month’s issues of the Henleaze & Westbury Voice, and Bishopston Voice. The charity issued a desperate plea for volunteers to help at its Westbury Park, WestburyonTrym and Henleaze shops and had an overwhelming response to the appeal. The new volunteers will be donating their time to help serve customers, display goods and sort donations. St Peter’s Hospice Head of Volunteer Resources Russell Cowan said: “We are delighted that our appeal for new volunteers was such a success and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the amazingly generous Voice readers who have decided to join our team. “Our hospice shops not only provide vital funds to allow us to continue caring for our patients, but also provide a wonderful service for the community. We hope the people of Westbury and Henleaze continue to support us and make use of our shops. “With shops across Bristol the volunteering drive is never over and we are now looking for volunteers to help at our Gloucester Road coffee shop, Nonesuch Cup.” If you would like more information about volunteering at the St Peter’s Hospice Nonesuch Cup please contact Russell Cowan on 0117 9159448 or visit www.stpetershospice.org

Finding stillness in fast moving times

NATIVE American artist, Cara Romero, is coming to Bristol this April to give a talk about her photography and artwork. A selection of her ‘Water Memories’ photographs can currently be seen at Rainmaker Gallery, Coldharbour Road, as part of the ‘STILL’ exhibition of Native American fine art photography on display until the end of May. The photographs show an immersed environment where the Native American figures are portrayed under the water surface, suspended in a drowned landscape to illustrate relationships between people, water and life.

The talk will take place at Redland Quaker Meeting House, 126 Hampton Rd on April 21, from 34pm. This will followed by a special artist’s reception with Cara Romero and her husband, the celebrated Pueblo Indian potter, Diego Romero, from 68pm at Rainmaker Gallery. This is the first of three exhibitions marking the 25th year of Rainmaker, bringing contemporary Native American art to the UK. To book for the artist’s talk contact jo@rainmakerart.co.uk or telephone 0117 9443101.

Advertising Feature The Residence Nil Rate Band and Inheritance Tax Planning Strategies

F

OR many, the main residence is the most valuable asset in the estate. The introduction of the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) from April 2017 will allow properties worth up to £1,000,000 (for married couples and civil partners, £500,000 for individuals) to be passed to direct descendants on death without an Inheritance Tax (IHT) charge. However, in some circumstances it might be preferable to redistribute assets during one’s lifetime, so here we look at one common financial planning scenario – downsizing and gifting the surplus sale proceeds. The Finance Bill 2016 contains draft legislation designed to compensate those who have downsized to a smaller property prior to death. To qualify for a ‘downsizing addition’, assets of equivalent value to any ‘lost’ RNRB must be passed to direct descendants on death. This is straightforward if the surplus is kept then passed on at the time of death. If, however, the surplus is gifted during the individual’s lifetime there are two

47

important considerations: The gift will be subject to inheritance tax if the donor dies within seven years On death, it is only possible to benefit from the downsizing addition if there are other assets in the estate to the value of the lost RNRB that can be inherited It is always worth seeking advice on the consequences of any planning with the family home. In this scenario, if death occurs within seven years and there are no further assets to take advantage of the downsizing addition, more IHT may be payable than if the lifetime gift had not been made. News Bake Well Wednesdays are coming to Southmead Hospital LOCAL people, businesses and schools are being asked to Bake Well every Wednesday to raise money for Southmead Hospital Charity. John Lewis launched the year of baking by hosting the first event at the hospital on March 23. The charity hopes to make Wednesday the day for everyone to share a sweet treat with friends and colleagues and raise valuable funds for the hospital. All money raised by the sales throughout the year will help support a variety of patient services, wards and departments across the hospital. Space in the Brunel building at Southmead hospital can be booked for the sales, or they can be held at fundraisers’ own premises. Lucy Ramseyer, Head of Branch at John Lewis Cribbs Causeway, said: “We are

49

delighted to kick-start Bake Well Wednesday for Southmead Hospital Charity and hope to raise a significant sum of money to set the bar high for others to follow. Our staff have been busy baking some delicious delights which are sure to be snapped up!” Southmead Hospital Charity’s community appeals manager, Adrian Brown, added: “We hope Bake Well Wednesdays will become firmly established locally. It’s always good to share a treat with friends and work mates, so why not raise money for a good cause at the same time?” A Bake Well Wednesday fundraising pack stuffed full of helpful information and useful materials is available at the charity’s website: www. southmeadhospitalcharity.org. uk/bakewell

Key to middle-aged specs appeal

V

ARIFOCALS or graded lenses are a very practical solution to the common problems of middle-aged eyesight, allowing you to see everything through just one pair of glasses. They are wonderfully versatile – more magnification down low for use at your desk, kitchen worktop or at the supermarket checkout, and progressively less magnification as you gaze upward to the middle distance and horizon. It’s important not to lift your chin and squash the neck back to peer through the reading zone at the bottom of your varifocals. Using a desktop computer usually requires a different prescription, so don’t feel

your optician is just trying to flog you something you don’t need! A head jutting forward typically causes back and shoulder tension, headaches, circulatory disorders, osteoarthritis, RSI and nerve pain. None of which are acceptable side-effects of a desk job or wearing glasses! Alternatively, contact lenses for sport, in the garden, walking, running or driving can be a real liberation. They free up your peripheral vision, which is otherwise restricted by frames and the need to look through the ‘sweet spot’ area of the glasses. Being free from frames also encourages us to retain the larger movements of our eye ball muscles, and avoids over-using the neck - if the

neck position is too curved or forward, years of unnecessary wear and tear will result. The best possible combo comes from the right eyewear and the right posture. Upright yet relaxed, with the back of the neck tall and head balanced. This is the very alignment you would have enjoyed quite naturally as a young child. With guidance, you can turn around the restrictive forward drift of the head and neck and return towards this open, mobile and healthier place. AIR Cadets from 2442 Squadron, Westbury on Trym, recently had the opportunity to visit London. After leaving Bristol in the early morning, cadets arrived at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by our local MP and honorary President, Charlotte Leslie. In a Committee Room in Portcullis House, Charlotte described her work in Westminster and in the Constituency and answered a barrage of questions from cadets, covering topics from Brexit, the Middle East and local issues. The cadets took a tour of the Palace of Westminster, seeing the Robing Room, where the Queen prepares before entering the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament, and the green and red benches in both Commons and Lords chambers. After lunch in St James's Park, the cadets travelled to Downing Street, the Cenotaph, and the Women of WWII memorial. The cadets spent time at Horse Guards Parade watching the changing of the sentries, before going into the

Household Cavalry Museum, which offered a host of interactive exhibits including the chance for cadets to try on the ceremonial uniform and see the troopers working with the horses in the original 18th century stables. There was time for a quick detour to Buckingham Palace for photos (the Queen was at home), before going to the Bomber Command Memorial at Hyde Park Corner. The day was rounded off with a visit to the exclusive RAF Officers' Club on Piccadilly for afternoon tea and a talk by Wing Commander Gilbert, one of the club trustees. All in all, it was an excellent day, and the weather was great! Based in College Road in WoT, the squadron caters for young people aged between 12 and 20 by providing a wide range of activities. If you are aged between 1217 and are interested in joining, or are an adult interested in volunteering, please get in touch at 2442@ aircadets.org or 0117 959 3269.

’VE recently had an experience that transformed how I think about my life and I thought I’d share it with you. I’m quite a positive person. I usually see the silver lining in any situation and I’m always looking to see the best in people or at least see their actions from a view of how would I be if I’d had their experiences. This is a wonderful coping mechanism and has the effect of living with a general attitude of not taking things personally and being able to either accept life as it is happening or problem solving. My mantra or affirmation has been, for as long as I can remember, ‘Whatever happens, I can handle it.’ It’s been wonderfully empowering. I’ve recently got to thinking about how that mantra is about me reacting to outside stimulus and being strong. I’ve also noticed that there are times that I put myself in some difficult situations. I got to thinking, ‘Is there a connection there?’ and thought there might be. So, I took on the task of creating a mantra that would navigate me toward more of what I want in life. It’s my new mantra is ‘I trust my instincts and live a happy and joyous life.

Yours in fun and fitness,

Joline Dunn

News Choosing your first glasses with a little help from CBeebies LOCAL optician, Lynne Fernandes Optometrists has featured in a new CBeebies series called ‘My First...’. The series records milestones and first experiences of children under 6 years old. Each episode follows one of these children as they do something new for the very first time. In the episode broadcast on 24 th March, Lynne Fernandes, director of Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, welcomes local child Izabel and her mum, Natasha, as Izabel makes her visit to the opticians. With Lynne’s guidance, Izabel gets her very first pair of glasses. She goes to the opticians to have her eyes tested to find out exactly what help she needs, and then she makes a very special trip to the Essilor factory to see her lenses getting made.

Lynne said, “It was important to us to let Izabel know that going to the opticians is a fun experience. It’s not just about getting a new pair of glasses – it’s about how to look after her eyes from childhood through to being an adult.” “As a practice we regularly speak to primary schools on the importance of having regular eye examinations and arrange class visits to the practices for the children try on glasses, see what happens in an eye test and learn some interesting facts about eyes.” Lynne Fernandes Optometrists has three practices in the Bristol area, Gloucester Road, Totterdown and Nailsea, and was among a number of opticians contacted by CBeebies to take part in the series. They were chosen because

they were happy to be involved and to highlight the importance of eye tests for children. Talking about the experience, Lynne said, “Filming took two days in total. It was great fun and the crew ensured everything ran smoothly. The whole team thoroughly enjoyed the experience and in our usual professional manner, we still managed to run clinics

alongside filming!” “My First... Glasses” is on 24th March at 9:00am and repeated at 1:00pm the same day on CBeebies, and repeated on iPlayer. Yoga for Health by Diana Penny

of Yogawest (www.yogawest.co.uk) Yoga Pose of the Month:

Eka Pada Bhekasana This is another more advanced posture: beginners should follow earlier editions of Pose of the Month before attempting this one. Because of the challenging nature of the full version of this pose (see next month!), practice Eka Pada Bhekasana (one leg only, as shown here) first to learn how to open up the front of your body one side at a time and to learn the proper hand placement. Lie on your belly with legs extended. Place your left forearm on the floor in front of you,

parallel to the mat. Lift each leg a little, and rotate your thighs inward. Then bend your right knee and reach your hand onto the inside of your right foot. Rotating the hand takes lots of practice: pivot your hand so that your wrist is facing backward and your knuckles and fingers face forward in the same direction as the toes. At the same time, slowly rotate your elbow toward the ceiling. Slide your fingers over the top of the foot and extend them out through the fingertips. 2) With the base of your palm, take the top of your foot toward your buttock, and slightly off to the side. Keep your knee in line

with your hip. 3) Square your shoulders with the front of the mat and don’t collapse into your left shoulder; press down with your elbow to lift your chest as high as you can. 4) Check that the fronts of both pelvic crests are level and are pressing down into the floor. Let your gaze extend softly out past your nose. Do Eka Pada Bhekasana on each side for the same length of time, thirty seconds to two minutes. Once your thighs and groins open enough, you can try the full pose-both legs at the same time. This will be in next month’s magazine. Beginner’s Tip: Support the lift

53 of the upper torso with a bolster under your lower ribs, and press your free forearm on the floor in front of the bolster. Practice Points: • Press the bent–knee hipbone down into the floor and lengthen the thigh back towards the knee. • Soften and widen the buttocks. • Lengthen the tailbone towards the bent knee. • Widen the collarbones. • Lengthen the neck.

Contraindications and cautions:

• High or low blood pressure • Migraine • Insomnia • Low back, neck or shoulder injuries • Don’t push your foot if it hurts your knee • Knee injury – see an experienced teacher Drawings and posture text reproduced by kind permission of Bobby Clennell, a senior Iyengar teacher in New York.

Knocked out teeth

H

ELLO! This month I wanted to share a brief guide about what to do if a tooth is knocked out. There is a difference between how to treat a knocked out baby tooth and a knocked out adult tooth.

with Dr Catherine Spalding

Baby Teeth If a baby tooth has been knocked out, do NOT replace the tooth in the child’s mouth. Instead, comfort the child and rinse the child’s mouth gently with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Phone your dentist as soon as possible.

Adult Tooth If an adult tooth is knocked out it is vital to act quickly and keep the patient calm. Find the tooth but do NOT touch the root (the bit that is under the gum). If the tooth is dirty rinse for a maximum of ten seconds in cool milk or water. Do NOT dry the tooth. It is vital to keep the tooth moist. If you can, place the tooth back into the socket, root first, as quickly as possible. Try and make sure it is facing the right way. Do not try and force it in. The tooth should slip easily into the socket. Get the patient to bite

on the tooth with a clean handkerchief. Seek Dental advice immediately! If you cannot place the tooth back in the socket, place the tooth between the patients gum and cheek. In a small child, where there could be a risk of swallowing the tooth, do not do this. Instead get the child to spit into a container and place the tooth in the spit. If this is not possible place the tooth in a container with cold milk, NOT water. Seek dental advice immediately. The tooth ideally, should be placed in the socket within 30 minutes of it coming out. After this time the tooth can be re-implanted but the prognosis is much better the quicker it is treated. If you play contact sports or are involved with the activates with risk of falls or collisions always wear a mouth guard. Mouth guards made by a dentist fit your mouth exactly. Be careful of some varieties of ship bought mould in your mouth guards. Make sure they fit well and provide maximum protection.

They are very unusual, as nearly all information about evacuation is based on adult/official documents or memoirs rather than what it was actually like for a child at the time. I would very much like to come and share this with your members - they are moving, sad and funny and evoke a period of recent history which is fast fading from people's memories. Henleaze & Westbury Library book review Cynthia Stiles –

Bristol in 50 Buildings In Bristol

in 50 Buildings, local historian Cynthia Stiles discusses some of the city’s major landmarks and lesser-known treasures, including the New Room, Courage Brewery and Wills Memorial Building, and explores how they’ve played a part in shaping the city’s fortunes. Bristol’s architectural hodgepodge of buildings, from lowly dwellings to lofty towers, is investigated and celebrated in this fascinating book. All of these buildings and many more are covered in this fascinating book: their history and the role they play today in one of England’s leading cities provide an enthralling historical narrative for the Bristol of yesterday and of today. Maria Semple –

Where’d you go, Bernadette When Bernadette Fox disappears two days before Christmas and a scheduled family trip

April, 2016

to Antarctica, her fifteen-year-old daughter, Bee is determined to track her down. She is sure that her dad, Microsoft guru Elgin Branch, knows more than he’s letting on. And she’s convinced that the shouting match with another schoolmom, Audrey Griffiths, was the trigger for the disappearance. Bee’s narration of events is interspersed with emails, notes, a school report, letters, bills, blog posts, announcements, journal articles, a poem, an audio transcript and several faxes, each in a different font and format, and all of which fill in the background facts on incidents and characters. Thus the reader learns about Bernadette’s decline from celebrated young architect to socially anxious semi-recluse, Bee’s precarious early childhood and Elgin’s rise to MS fame, as well as what led to Bernadette’s flight and why the FBI got involved. Semple’s characters develop, and not always in an expected manner: one surprisingly discovers a conscience; another disappointingly gives in to temptation; another metamorphoses, perhaps predictably, from small and benign to large and threatening. They are characters that are familiar from everyday life: the fawning admin, the venomous school mom, the hard-working father, the text-book psychiatrist, the excruciatingly enthusiastic fund-raiser. As Bee trails her mom to the ends of the earth, the full gamut of reactions to loss is depicted. This is a hilarious book that nonetheless touches on some topical issues including work/life balance, trust, identity theft, posttraumatic stress and the best way to remove blackberry bushes. Readers may find some parts bring a lump to the throat, but will spend most of this clever novel laughing out loud.

Jeff Kinney –

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Old School

Old School starts with Greg reflecting on how adults are always wittering on about the good old days”. Greg loves his technology, but Mom is on a mission to get the neighbourhood to have an electronic device free weekend. She has a tough job gaining signatures for her petition, until the day when Grandpa throws a party in the Heffley residence. And Greg has other problems: the pet pig is turning far too human, and Grandpa has come to live with them. Greg’s problems grow so big that he decides to escape by joining the school camp trip to Hardscrabble Farms.

Prego Restaurant & Manna Restaurant, Co-Owners Julian Faiello & Olivier Gallery

What service do you provide to the people of Bishopston & Redland?:

Tell us about your company? My brother-in-law and I took a leap of faith in 2009 and opened Prego Restaurant in North View, and Manna Restaurant 2 years later. Oddly enough we were both previously in the building trade, but I had grown up with restaurateur parents, who owned an Italian in Clifton for many years, as well as restaurants in Glasgow, Innsbruck and Naples. I had learned to eat a full sized pizza by the age of 5! and was accomplished in Italian cookery at an early age. My Brotherin-Law, and business partner, trained as a chef and is also half french hence between us we were obsessed by really good food and had a vision of what we could achieve. We are really proud that the businesses have steadily grown and we now employ 26 people across the two restaurants. It’s actually loads of friendly fun in the restaurants and I feel we all get on and have a laugh. Of course there are challenges such as delivering service to 100 people during evening service, but its kind of like a well oiled machine, we all get on and make it happen, I am impressed with my team and what they achieve. I am also always grateful and proud to think we achieved

that morning. We also truly like to support as many locals traders as we can so that we can share the success around. We buy our fruit and vegetables from Lloyds Greengrocers on Henleaze Road and meat from Gales of Westbury just down the road from us on North View.

thriving businesses during the recession era, and now have the pleasure of working with 26 team members as well as delivering delicious food to the neighbourhood and community.

What is the best part of running your business and working in Bishopston & Redland? The best part is seeing customers return again and again to us, and receiving their positive feedback about how much they enjoyed their food and experience. The communities of Bishopston and Redland make this a pleasure for us to do. My wife on the school run tells me she is asked about certain meals people have tried in the restaurant and is told how much they enjoyed them. We love hearing this from the community we live and work within. Quite unique and special for a business owner. We also learn a lot from our community and friends in

What makes your service different from that of other companies?

We make everything from scratch on the premises daily, from fresh pasta, bread, ice cream, even the syrup in the Bellini’s! It is important to us that we offer the most fresh and delicious food possible, and the kitchen is always buzzing with creative activity. This also makes us highly adaptable and we can decide to change our menu or Specials at the drop of a hat, we all get in at about 9am and by lunchtime we could have decided to turn everything around because we are excited about an ingredient that became available

What are your plans for the future of the business?

That is an interesting one, I keep on driving through locations, whether in Bristol or further a field, and imagine a Prego Restaurant on the High Street. That is certainly were we would imagine ourselves to be, in the centre of a community somewhere. Watch this space! Bishopston…wine conversion and tips with Darren at Grape & Grind on Gloucester Road, enthusiastic 5am calls from Lloyds the Greengrocer that something new and exciting is in the market. There is a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm locally.

When we found the location for Prego in 2009 we wanted to create a lovely, local, sociable restaurant that customers would want to come with their friends, kids, families and clients and really enjoy their experience and tell others. We were out the other day and a lady said to us how pleased she is we are there on North View High Street, and our presence has really added to the location. That is great, we felt good for days!

website for details. They’ll be keen to highlight the advice above, as well as the need to ensure sheds and garages are properly secured. With the return of the annual ‘Rogue Trader Week’ this month, we’re also looking for people to help spread the word, particularly to elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours that, “If you’re not sure, don’t open the door.” It takes a lot of confidence to say no, especially when confronted by someone with a convincing story.

ON

Y

OU may have heard about the burglar who was jailed recently after he left a helpful trail of floury footprints from the victim’s flat to his own. He’d stepped in a bag of flour. Sadly, the task of catching burglars is rarely made as simple. The focus has to be on prevention. Many recent cases have involved burglars targeting car keys either left on view or that they can get to by fishing through lletterboxes. Please remember to put your car keys securely away out of sight – never leave them in the back door or within view through a letterbox or window. We’re also continuing to see a trend for ‘easy’ break-ins through UPVC doors with paddle or stub handles that homeowners are unwittingly leaving on a catch instead of properly locked. Don’t fall into the trap of simply pulling the handle up, hearing the clicks, and thinking it is locked. You must still turn the key to properly lock the door, otherwise the only thing securing it is the small latch next to the handle, which is easy to slip. Burglars are on to this, so if you or family members or neighbours have such a door, please help by sharing this advice. Over the coming weeks, PCSOs Toby Rideout and Zaheer Bulbul will be holding mobile beat surgeries throughout the area – check our

PRIL can be chilly, breezy and showery but, even in a cold year, by the time it arrives spring should be well underway. There has hardly been a mild day all winter when our neighbour’s honeybees have not popped out for a quick foraging trip but now they are getting really busy and are joined by the first bumble bees of the year. Honeybees are vital for pollinating many crops and flowers but the importance of bumble bees is often overlooked. Bumble bees perform a special service for some plants, including tomatoes, called buzz pollination. The pollen is released from the anthers only when vibrated by a buzzing bumble bee - the buzz of the honeybee is just not powerful enough. The domesticated honeybee (also called the western honeybee) is a single

species but there are many species of bumble bee – are you sitting down? – at least 22 species are resident in Britain. The first bumble bees can emerge as early as February, if the weather is kind. Buff-tailed and white-tailed bumble bees are the earliest to appear in our area. To identify these teddy bears of the insect world you need to look carefully at the pattern of stripes; these two early species are both named after the last stripe, the one on the very end of the abdomen. The queens head out on the first warm days of spring to fill up with nectar and to hunt for a place to found their new colony. The queens are the only individuals to survive the winter; the males die soon after mating in the summer. When she has found a suitable site with good nectar sources nearby (making a flowery garden ideal) the queen will lay the first eggs which will grow into worker bees and so the new colony will become established. Bumble bees nest in cavities in walls and rocks and

in holes in the ground, often using the abandoned burrows of bigger animals. There can be a few hundred individuals in a mature colony but compare that to a hive of around 50,000 honeybees and you can see why nobody has bothered to domesticate bumble bees. Last year we found a tiny bumble bee nest in the base of matted grass in an untrimmed bit of our lawn. We were delighted as we were carrying out what passes for a bit of tidying up in our wild garden and until then we hadn’t even realised they were there. Stop cutting a corner of your lawn and see if you can get a nest in your garden; they won’t bother you. Like honeybees, they are reluctant to sting as it generally leads to their death and a bumble bee colony is so small that it cannot afford to lose any workers. What better excuse do you need for reducing the amount of mowing: bumble bees, like honey bees, are not doing well, and they need all the help they can get.
