Ambassador hails Moldova Project

Has Westbury ever looked better?

A charity founded by Henleaze twins Emma and Lucy Watson has been praised by the British Ambassador to Moldova.

Young people from schools and colleges around the area notched up some excellent GCSE and A-level results.

CAN Westbury-on-Trym keep up its amazing run of floral success? Only the judges know whether Bristol in Bloom’s ‘Best Shopping Area’ award will be Westbury’s for the 12th consecutive year. The result is due to be announced any time. But the word on the street is that the village and the Stoke

Lane shopping area have never looked better. Great splashes of colour everywhere – orange, yellow, pink, purple, white and green – and a record number of displays. This year there are more than 90 hanging baskets, 35 planters and troughs as well as planting in other areas.

Sue Boyd, Chair of Westbury in Bloom, is delighted with the growing support from the community and the fact that the display attracts so many visitors. “So many residents have come up trumps this year in showing their support with generous donations and sponsorships of Turn to Page 3.

Response on parking problems BRISTOL City Council’s Traffic Management Group received around 50 responses from local residents giving views on parking problems and suggestions for restrictions. The deadline for responses was extended to August 9th, and the next stage will be the publication of a draft plan later in the year followed by further public consultation. That will lead to final plans and implementation of a Traffic Regulation Order enabling new measures to be introduced, though no new yellow lines are likely to appear in under a year. Meanwhile speed restrictions in the form of ‘run-over’ chicanes have appeared in Chock Lane in Westbury-on-Trym in a bid to control what has developed into a dangerous rat-run. Because Bristol City Council have consistently declined funding for this project, Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership have gathered money from various sources including its own Wellbeing Fund to enable the work to be carried out.

Look out for two new features this year. The small square bed on the central reservation opposite NatWest has been considerably improved by Arthur Brice

A Women’s Institute bed has been created alongside the JC Deceaux advertising billboard in Canford Lane by Arthur Brice. News Decision time for Bristol libraries THE future of Westbury-onTrym Library and five other Bristol libraries under threat of closure was due to be resolved at Bristol City Council Cabinet on September 1st. Mayor George Ferguson makes the final decision, and the expectation was that library provision in all 28 library areas would be retained in some way. All libraries would open for a minimum of 20 hours a week, and 25 libraries, including Westbury, would have a 25% reduction applied to their current opening hours. Westbury library is currently open from 9am – 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and from 9.30am – 7pm on Fridays. This amounts to 39.5 hours a week, so the expectation is that at some stage Westbury’s opening hours will be reduced to around 29-30 hours a week. As reported in Voice last month, there are plans for a

pilot scheme to extend some library opening hours through an electronic access system using swipe cards and no staff attendance. Westbury library may be chosen for such a trial. Councillor Geoff Gollop, leader of Westbury’s ‘Save the Library’ campaign, says: “We must keep up the momentum by supporting and using our library. We can now help shape the library service over the coming years.” The Mayor’s decision concludes a service review that started in November 2014. The following key messages summarise the views expressed by library users all over Bristol during the consultation process: The current library service is highly valued, and respondents do not understand why the Council would seek to make large savings in this service. People who currently use the library service want to see their local services develop further beyond the current provision.

There are varied and sometimes conflicting idea about what a library is and how it can or should be developed. There is an appetite for some change, and some respondents are keen for opportunities to be explored around different uses and services that could be provided within libraries. The majority of respondents felt that finding ways to extend opening hours (eg swipe card access) is broadly a good idea. They have raised some concerns about how this would work in practice, and people were keen to pilot the approach to deal with any issues before a wider roll-out. For some campaign groups, current usage is an important factor in considering the future of libraries. Respondents felt strongly that libraries are currently poorly marketed, and the way activities are communicated needs much improvement.

The Mayor’s decision was due to lift the threat to Westburyon-Trym library and others in the city.

Behind the scenes!

M

ANY owners aren’t really sure about what goes on ‘out the back’ at their local vet practice as most pets are dropped off in the morning and then collected later in the day. The majority of animals we admit are in for neutering, but we also see many for dental treatment or lump removals. The rest of our case load is made up of further diagnostics such as blood tests, x-rays or ultrasound scans, as well as an array of emergency cases. We also have more complicated orthopaedic operations in on some days. On admission a nurse or vet will go through the consent form, highlighting any specific recommendations. These might include pre-anaesthetic blood tests, which can help us to screen for underlying organ impairment. This blood sample will be collected from your pet’s neck or foreleg, so we will need to shave some fur in this area to find the vein. Samples are analysed on our in-house machine, meaning we get the results promptly. If there are any problems we can always phone you to discuss before we proceed any further. We will often place a small catheter in a forelimb to deliver drugs (and intravenous fluids if required), again shaving a small area. Most of the animals receive a ‘pre-med’, a combination of sedation and pain relief, to help calm them prior to their general anaesthetic. Once your pet is

relaxed, we can then induce them, usually with a drug given intravenously. Once asleep we place a tube down their airway to allow anaesthetic gases to be delivered, which keep them under anaesthetic during the procedure. Your pet is monitored throughout their surgery, with regular checks being made and recorded by the nurse. Once the surgery has finished we gradually wake them up again, monitoring them closely, removing the anaesthetic tube from their airway. We try and keep them as warm as possible during this period with the use of heat pads and blankets. Many patients will receive additional pain relief and possibly other drugs such as antibiotics, depending on the procedure. The nurse or vet will talk to you when your pet is discharged in the evening to discuss post-operative instructions. We usually see your pet back for follow up appointments too to so we can check on their progress. If you want to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes then why not come to our open day at the Chipping Sodbury branch on Saturday 26th September? We are running a coffee morning to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support between 10am and 2pm. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions, as well as to show you around the practice. We look forward to seeing you there!

Hari Miller (left) reaches the finishing line on Putney Bridge with her two walking colleagues Charlotte Sjoberg (second left) and Clare Needham (right). Karen Reader (pictured centre with her daughter Florrie), has set up ‘Get a Life!’ HARI Miller of Westbury-onTrym and two friends have walked over 17 London bridges, from Tower Bridge to Putney Bridge, in the hope of raising funds for the new charity Get a Life! – total distance about 15 miles. Get a Life! is a foundation set up by an inspirational young lady, Karen Reader, who had a car accident which left her having to use a wheelchair at the age of 23. This also meant Karen had to put the careers she loved as a Virgin air stewardess and professional dancer behind her. While Karen and her family were trying to pull their lives together she realised just how difficult it was to find the emotional and practical support needed by people whose lives are left devastated in this way – and

so she set up this vital charitable foundation. Hari and her friends are looking to raise £5,000 to fund the charity’s ‘Get Started!’ campaign, providing a one stop shop of information and advice for individuals and their families who become disabled. Karen Reader said: “As a charity very much in its infancy, we are so grateful for the efforts of these wonderful ladies to help us move forward in our quest to improve the emotional support for individuals who become disabled and their families. TSB Bank plc supported Hari in her venture along with Costa Coffee who provided refreshments along the way. To support Hari’s venture, please visit: https://mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/17bridges

Advertising Feature Myopia: What is it?

M

YOPIA or shortsightedness, is the eye condition where near objects are clear, but objects farther away are blurred. It is caused by the eye ball being slightly too long. There is no doubt that rates of myopia are going up, so much so that some researchers are describing this as an epidemic Traditionally opticians have corrected myopia with glasses or contact lenses. Current research suggests this may be making the problem worse! As Lynne and I are both myopic and therefore have a good chance of having myopic children, we’ve always kept abreast of current research into myopia control. We’ve spent

the last 18 months creating a myopia control programme based on current research evidence. Myopia: can it be controlled? The short answer is yes and the younger the better. If you want to know more, contact and ask our team for an information leaflet. With the new school year just starting: now’s is the time to make sure our children’s eyes are as good as they can be and protected for the future.

Henleaze twins lead building project in Europe’s poorest country UK volunteers have successfully completed a challenging building project in Moldova, Europe’s poorest country, thanks to the generosity and enterprise of Henleaze twins Emma and Lucy Watson. The 11-day programme has improved the living conditions of impoverished children. It was the third and most significant of its kind run by The Moldova Project, a charity founded by Emma and Lucy in 2008 when they were students at Red Maids’ School. Their father Chris teaches Science at Red Maids’. Volunteers carried out repairs on badly damaged houses in Ciuciuleni, a remote village, to ensure that they are insulated from Moldova’s bitter winter when temperatures can drop to -30C. By contrast the group, who ranged in age from 20 to 70, were working in summer

temperatures nearing 40C. The British Ambassador to Moldova, Phil Batson, said: “Such projects really do show Britain at its best, making a real difference to the lives of Moldovan people.” Supporters of the charity and the volunteers fundraised for the project during a programme of events which included sponsored runs and ‘buy a brick’ initiatives in schools. The money raised by these activities was used to purchase the building materials, as well as equipment to run activity sessions for children. The Moldova Project works with families living in poverty to ensure that they can stay together and become selfsufficient. Emma Watson now lives in London, working for a charity that helps children living in poverty in London. “I am doing this to learn more

Her sister Lucy lives in Leicester and is a PE teacher. More information about Emma and Lucy’s charity and the building project in Moldova can be found on their website, www. themoldovaproject.com

Orchard School’s high-fliers are set for bright future

INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR BOYS 7–18 FOUNDED 1590

Open Events STUDENTS at Orchard School Bristol in Horfield have achieved ‘exceptional’ results against a backdrop of national volatility, says head teacher Dr Helen Holman. 57% of students achieved 5 A*-C - a rise of 16% since 2014 - and more than 65% achieved A*-C in English. Other exceptional results included nearly 90% of students achieving A*-C in humanities while 90% achieved A*-C in two sciences. There was also a significant rise in students achieving the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) award. Pupils, parents and staff celebrated the results with ice cream and balloons at the school on August 20. Personal successes have been aplenty, with one student Princey Abraham achieving four A*s, six As and one B. She said: “I was pretty nervous about what I was going to get, but I’m really happy – I did much better than I thought I would.” Princey will be heading to Redland Green Sixth Form College this September to study biology, history, chemistry and sociology. Samantha Lofler was also another high achiever. Her results read three A*s, seven As and three Bs. “I’m so pleased with what I’ve got,” she said. “I really wasn’t expecting it. I kind of talked myself out of it that I was going to do this well.” Samantha will be studying chemistry, biology, mathematics and geography at Redland Green. Hamza Marie says that he is over the moon with his achievements. He gained nine As, one A* and one B and will also be joining his friends at Redland Green College this term. The overall results represent more steady achievement from the school in the core subjects while a number of Year 8 and 9 students gained GCSEs in classics - a new subject introduced at the school for 2015. One example is Ellie Boyd, a Year 9 pupil who achieved a C in the subject. She said that was very proud to have gained a GCSE, despite only being 14-years-old. Dr Holman said: “First and foremost, we are all so proud of all of our students who put in a huge effort and gained superb results, yet another year of strong progress for us. “It appears there is real volatility in some areas, particularly maths, and we are pleased to have made more steady progress against this background. “We have enjoyed a lovely day celebrating these successes and it was lovely to see real tears of joy and hear about their plans for the future.”

Education A Level grades ‘help open doors’ COMBINED A Level and IB results at Red Maids’ School in Westbury-on-Trym revealed high levels of attainment. Eighteen per cent of all entries were awarded A* grades, and 80 per cent earned A*, A or B grades. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress at the 380-year-old school, said: “Our students are consistently rewarded with grades that help open doors for them in some of the most prestigious universities and companies. “The fact that so many Red Maids received unconditional offers is a clear indication of the quality of our students and the reputation of the school.” Emily Atkins (18) from Westbury-on-Trym will study biomedical science following a gap year teaching in an orphanage in Cambodia through the Project Trust. Emily, who has been fund-raising for nine months to support her expedition, studied Fine Art, Biology and Russian at A Level and gained an A* and two A grades. She accepted an unconditional offer from Queen Mary’s London in the autumn. Immy McAndrew from Henleaze gained an A* and two A grades in her Fine Art, Biology and Geography A Levels. She is going on to an Art Foundation course and is currently considering a career in architecture. In 2014 Immy was sponsored by the International Rotary Club to attend a World Affairs Seminar in the United States.

Another great set of results for QEH THE boys at QEH (Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital) achieved their best ever GCSE results this year. Ninety-one percent of all grades were A*to B, 70 percent A* or A and 36 percent A*. Nearly one quarter of the QEH GCSE cohort achieved a straight set of A* and A grades. Head of Maths, Mr Rick Martineau, was delighted that 91% of IGCSE Maths grades were at A* or A. He said: “This is our best set of results on record, so we are delighted at this result in core subject area when Maths results nationally seem to be falling.” QEH’s A-Level students also celebrated 100 percent pass rate for the tenth year running. Over 83 percent of grades achieved were A*, A and B, and 96 percent of grades were A* to C grade. One-third of students taking the examinations at QEH achieved straight A* or A grades in their 3 or 4 A-level subjects and one-quarter were awarded at the A* grade. Overall 58% of grades achieved were A* or A. QEH Headmaster, Stephen Holliday, said: “Again our exceptional A-level and AS-level results mean that about 10 per cent of boys from the Year group have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge, in addition to the others who will be off to medical, veterinary and dentistry schools as well as other top universities. “Our consistently strong

record for top results is part of the much greater package that we offer to boys in preparing

them for higher education and successful future careers. Boys leave QEH with not only the

qualifications but the confidence to meet the challenges of the world ahead.”

Swaziland trip is success for BTEA PUPILS at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTEA) have completed a twoweek charity work and trekking expedition in Swaziland. The Year 11 and 13 students travelled to the small southern African kingdom on a World Challenge Expedition, having fundraised £2,595 over the last 18 months. They were welcomed into the Ndinda community and stayed at a Neighbourhood Care Point which helps support orphans whose parents have died as a result of HIV infection. The challengers helped build a kitchen at the site. The 16-strong group also went trekking in the scenic Ngwempisi Gorge and visited two nature reserves, Malolotja and Mlilwane, where they enjoyed a sunset safari and ate at a game

restaurant with traditional Swazi dancers. One of the BTEA group, Sam Bailey, 16, said: “The expedition has given me a new start, a fresh beginning. I’ve seen how a community can be so happy with so little and we were made to feel so welcome. Now I just want to get all the happiness and enjoyment out of everything I do.” Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy in Stoke Gifford is one of 30 University Technical Colleges across England, catering for pupils in Years 10 to 13 and with a strong focus on engineering and environmental technologies. BTE Academy has some places available for September 2015 for current Year 9 students. Visit www.bteacademy.co.uk or call 0117 983 8080 for more information.

All-round success for Clifton High Sixth Form THIS summer Clifton High School pupils, parents, staff and governors have been celebrating academic success in both A levels and GCSEs. Clifton High is the only school in the South West that operates the successful Diamond Edge Model of education where boys and girls are taught separately for core subjects in Years 7 – 9. Last year the school announced outstanding public examination results for the first set of pupils who joined since it became co-

educational in the Senior School. This year pupils have continued to do well, re-establishing the school’s consistently high academic credentials. A levels: Last year more A* grades than ever were achieved and continuing in that same vein, this year, almost 50% of all grades were at A* or A. 80% of all grades were B or above and 40% of students gained full UMS marks in at least one module of their chosen subjects. GCSEs: This year almost 50%

of all grades were A* or A. Almost 80% of grades were A* to B and 98% of students achieved at least 5 A* to C grades. Success in a diverse range of subjects At both A level and GCSE, pupils achieved excellent results in the broad range of subjects on offer. The School continues to be particularly strong in mathematics and the sciences, especially in the performances of young women. This year at GCSE in mathematics and the sciences 83% of grades at A* and A were gained by female students and 55% of grades for the sciences were A* or A. In ancient and modern foreign languages, GCSE results were outstanding with 62% of grades at A* or A. At A level 70% of students achieved grades of A* or A in modern foreign languages. Students at Clifton High also excelled in creative subjects. A

level 80% of grades in art and textiles were at A* or A and at GCSE 100% of grades were at A* or A in art. Dr Alison Neill, Head of School comments: “I am delighted with the successes that our students have achieved this year. The hard work and dedication of our young men and women, combined with the first class education they have received at Clifton High, have ensured well deserved and truly excellent results. While many of these young men and women joined us at Senior School a good number have been at Clifton High since Reception or the Junior School. We have watched them grow and develop, excel academically and become confident well-rounded individuals. It is with great pleasure that, today, we celebrate their successes with them and their parents and wish them well for the future.”

Westbury twins collect 18 A*s GCSE and IGCSE results at Red Maids’ School included a total of 18 A*s for twins Georgia and Rebecca Watts from Westbury-on-Trym. Georgia, who achieved A*s in all her 10 subjects, said it felt “surreal”. Rebecca, with 8 A*s and 3 A grades, commented: “All the hard work was worth it.” They were one of three sets of Red Maids’ twins in Year 11 who between them secured more than 50 A* or A grades. Of the school’s 83 candidates, 26.5% received 10 or more A* or A grades. Headmistress Isabel Tobias said: We look forward to welcoming the girls back in September when they begin their Sixth Form studies, together with those who are joining us from other schools.” It was the first time that modern foreign languages (MFL) had been examined at IGCSE at Red Maids’ and with excellent results. Taking French, Spanish and German together, 66% of all entries won A* or A grades, with the figure rising to 79% in German alone. In Latin 82% of entries won A* or A grades, while in textiles 91% of all entries were an A* or A. In PE all students received A* or A grades.

Jelf cyclists raise over £20,000 for St Peter’s Hospice in memory of Emma EMMA Wygladala was just 38 when she died at St Peter’s Hospice. She had worked as a business support manager in the Employee Benefits division of Jelf, the financial services group, whose national headquarters is at Chipping Sodbury. In 2013 she was diagnosed with a very rare sarcoma of the womb, and was cared for at the hospice until her death in March 2014. A group of Emma’s friends and colleagues at Jelf decided to raise funds for St Peter’s in Emma’s memory, and undertook a two-day 150-mile bike ride linking Jelf offices in Cardiff and Ringwood in Hampshire. Staff at both locations deliver financial services in healthcare and had worked with Emma. They raised over £15,000 in sponsorship, with further fundraising around the event

bringing in a total of £20,151, and a cheque for this sum was handed over to St Peter’s at a special presentation at the hospice in Brentry. It took the total raised by Jelf staff for St Peter’s to £30,000 in the last 18 months, with further fundraising planned including another bike ride in August. Jelf’s chief executive, Alex Alway, said: “The bike ride was an excellent opportunity to bring everyone together in memory of our colleague Emma and raise essential funds for the hospice.” The first leg of the ride from Cardiff ended at Chipping Sodbury where the Mayor, Wendy Whittle, at St Peter’s Corporate Fundraiser Edd Smith led the official welcoming party for the cyclists. Mr Alway continued: “Each year the Jelf staff rise to a challenge, and this was by no means an easy one, but one

Lord Mayor ‘moved, privileged and humbled’ by war veterans AS Lord Mayor of Bristol, Henleaze Councillor Clare Campion-Smith has been struck by the number and variety of military occasions in the city. “Whatever you may think of the political decisions that determine their deployment, we expect servicemen and women to do us proud whether it is protecting the civilian population in Afghanistan, fighting the Ebola crisis in Africa or helping relieve the floods in Somerset,” she said. “I have also met many cadets, reservists, some regular service men and women and even an Air Vice-Marshal (female!). The young cadet and the oldest veteran share a sense of pride in serving the Queen and a desire to work for their country – and they have some of the shiniest shoes you will ever see. “I see it very much as the role of the Lord Mayor to say thank you on behalf of the city for what they do and have done. “There is a darker side. Some servicemen and women never return from active service, some return injured in mind and body. Service families can be torn apart by tragedy. For Lord Mayors, it is equally important to give attention to the many

organisations and charities working in Bristol whose purpose is to support and to heal. “Volunteers and fundraisers do a phenomenal job all year round.” The Lord Mayor has recently attended the annual Burma Star Association service in the Lord Mayor’s Chapel, Armed Forces Day with an outdoor drumhead service in Queen Square, and the VJ service in the Cathedral commemorating the 70th anniversary of the allies’ victory over Japan. She and her husband Ian were also present at the Lord Mayor’s Chapel for the laying down of the Veterans’ Association colours on the 71st anniversary of D Day. “A little arithmetic soon reminds you that the ‘young lads’ of these campaigns are now 89 and the number of exsoldiers present at their meetings is dwindling rapidly,” she continued. “Yet despite the arthritis and the occasional unsteadiness, these men still assume that familiar military bearing when the music starts. They are unassuming to talk to; they do not see themselves as heroes; they did what was asked of them to protect the country and they

News Westbury Show fills every inch SOME competitors, visitors and helpers at the Westbury-on-Trym Village Show will remember when it was a flower festival only. They may also recall that it was the Village Hall that started it, and although the size and scope of the event has grown out of all recognition it still remains at its spiritual home. The 36th Show on September 5th will fill every inch of the hall and its beautiful garden, with the audience peaking late afternoon when the judges’ decisions are announced and prizes distributed. On their way around the hall, people will admire entries in 93 competition classes – with much more creative and artistic items on show. “Are you planning to increase the competition schedule?” was the naive question from Voice. “Not until we have more space,” was the rapid reply from Alexia Gardner who has been on the show committee for 13 years

and has chaired it for five. Alexia and Henry Deval, Chairman of the Village Hall for six years, jointly head what has become a very effective partnership in planning and running the show. “It’s obviously a very important weekend for us,” said Henry, “but with the stream of activities and hirings of the hall, the place gets well used throughout the year. “We have a two-week shut-

down period in the summer for running repairs, but that’s about it. And of course that’s how it should be. “Actually we need to start planning for our 150th anniversary in 2019, and before that we should make sure this magnificent building is looking its best.” One shared problem for Alexia and Henry is the dwindling number of volunteers available to help the Westbury

Show committee and the hall. “Obviously many of our stalwarts deserve a rest, but their sons and daughters lead such busy lives that it difficult for them to find the time to help us.” The message was that every little bit helps, and spare pairs of hands are always welcome, irrespective of how much time they can give. It is a given that the Westbury Show will again be a day to remember, especially if the weather is good and visitors can enjoy the impressive range of outdoor activities booked this year. Depending when you read this, we hope you will (or have) enjoyed yourselves, and that the judges have made all the right decisions about the vegetables, plants and flowers,, flower arranging, art for all, colouring and handwriting, children’s arts and crafts, cookery, needlework, photography and handicrafts. If not, better luck next year.

Party in the Park welcomes hot air balloon

Plans include tethered flights in the C J Hole hot air balloon.

THE Party in the Park at Golden Hill Sports Ground in Henleaze has a major new attraction on September 12th. The annual charity event, which last year attracted around 3,000 people, will host the C J Hole hot air balloon. The estate agents and letting agents are sponsoring the event, and (weather permitting) their balloon will offer tethered rides on the day. In fact there is an inflatable theme this year with a collection of bouncy slides and bungee football. The massive line-up of attractions also includes live bands, a grand prize draw, , live displays, sporting events, gokarts and tug of war.

The ninth Party in the Park is organized by Golden Hill Sports & Social Club, a registered sports charity, which bought the sevenacre sports ground in 2008 from the YWCA. There was a danger of the ground being re-developed for housing, and local residents formed the charity to raise the £250,000 necessary to buy it for the community. Because of the generosity of so many people, the amount which needed to be borrowed was just £80,000. The end is in sight because provided the 2015 and 2016 Parties in the Park go well, that debt should be fully repaid. Golden Hill Sports, now one of the biggest sports clubs

SUPPORTERS of the Henbury loop rail system claim that its rejection by the West of England Joint Transport Board in favour of a Henbury to Yate spur is based on faulty evidence and questionable assumptions. Significant increases in traffic are expected in the coming years as a result of the thousands of new homes in the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood (CPNN). Westbury-on-Trym will be heavily impacted through extra traffic forcing its way down the A4018 corridor including Falcondale Road and Westbury Road. Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie told the Joint Transport Board that the estimated number of 635,000 passengers was an under-estimate. Because of inefficient ticketing systems, 20 per cent of rail passengers do not buy a ticket. This means that the actual passenger numbers would be more like 760,000. “The board needs to go back to the drawing board and rectify these glaring errors and produce a report in which experts and the public can all have faith,” she said. “I for one will not stand by while we are faced with the prospect of a half baked public transport system while the north of our city descends into a dystopian gridlock disaster.”

Advertising Feature Inheritance Tax changes: the key points AS discussed last month, a new “Main Residence Nil Rate Band” (MRNRB) for inheritance tax was announced by the Chancellor in the Summer Budget 2015. This will be introduced from April 2017 and is designed to specifically protect the family home from inheritance tax. It will be in addition to the existing £325,000 standard nil rate band. Here are the key points: - The MRNRB will be phased in as follows; £100,000 (tax year 2017/18), £125,000 (tax year 2018/19), £150,000 (tax year 2019/20) and £175,000 (tax year 2020/21 and beyond). - The property qualifies for MRNRB as long as it has been occupied, at some point, as the family home and the home is transferred directly, on death, to the children or grandchildren of the deceased. This transfer usually has to be made outright, however transfers to certain trusts where the children and/or grandchildren are absolute beneficiaries is allowable. - Special rules will be introduced to protect those who downsize. - Where the value of the deceased’s estate

exceeds £2million then the MRNRB will be reduced by £1 for every £2 over the £2m. This means that by 2020/21 there is no MRNRB available on first death where the value of the estate exceeds £2.35m (this figure is £2.7m on the death of the surviving spouse where the full MRNRB is fully transferable between spouses - see below). - Any MRNRB not used on first death can be transferred to the surviving spouse in full. However, where the first death occurred before 6th April 2017 the available MRNRB deemed to be carried over will be £100,000. News Expansions to Westbury’s Conservation Area

A REVISED Westbury-on-Trym Conservation Area has been formally adopted by Bristol City Council, and now forms a material consideration in planning decisions. It supersedes the previous version which has existed for 43 years. The boundary now takes in the Southfield Road ‘environs’ to the south of the village and Elmfield Lodge to the north. The Westbury-on-Trym Conservation Area, designated in 1971, was one of the earliest in Bristol. Conservation Areas usually apply to the core of a village or urban area considered worthy of preservation or enhancement because if it special architectural or historic interest. Their purpose is to protect the quality or special interest of the neighbourhood as a whole rather than specific buildings. As such it is distinct from the listed buildings planning process. This can include the layout of boundaries, roads, vistas and

viewpoints, trees and green features, street furniture and surfaces, the characteristic building materials of the area, the mix of different uses or the design of shop fronts. The Conservation Area document, which has been welcomed by the Westbury-onTrym Society (WotSoc), can be seen on the Bristol City Council website – www.bristol.gov.uk. Southfield Road had been laid out by the 1880s, it says, and has strong residential character with housing standing in generous plots and enjoying good views north-west towards the Blaise Castle estate. “The straight route of Southfield Road with high hedges and mature street trees contribute to its verdant surburban avenue character,” says the document. Describing the Elmfield Lodge expansion, the City Council argue that late 20th century infill housing has created a break in character – in effect separating

produced by WotSoc, as the starting point for their review of the Westbury Conservation Area. The Council’s draft “Conservation Area Character Appraisal and Boundary Review” was the subject of a public Consultation that closed on 30 April 2014.

News Your chance to help Bristol create a Murmuration of 1,000 starlings A FLOCK of 1,000 ceramic starlings is being created by residents and businesses in Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym. ‘A Bristol Murmuration’ is a Neighbourhood Arts Project for Bristol Green Capital, celebrating local wildlife. It is funded through a £10,000 grant from Bristol Green Capital through Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westburyon-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership. The project is based on a proposal by Bristol-based artist Zoe Cameron who specialises in clay and ceramics. Zoe is running a series of public workshops where adults’ and children follow her guidance in making bodies and wings which are eventually wired together. The first was outside Westbury-on-Trym Baptist Church in Reedley Road on August 12th, followed by Henleaze Library (August 17th) and Stoke Lodge Garden (August 20th and 24th). This month’s workshops are at Stoke Lodge Garden (September 2nd 9am-5pm), Westbury-on-Trym Village Show (September 5th 11am-4pm), Elsie Briggs House of Prayer (September 8th from 2.30pm) and Golden Hill Party in the Park (from midday). Zoe explained: “In these

Zoe Cameron’s striking artwork for the Murmuration of 1,000 ceramic starlings. workshops they can sculpt their own birds, culminating in a celebratory procession and mass installation of `1,000 ceramic starlings to highlight the recent decline in population of this previously common garden bird.” Wings will be attached to bodies at varying angles to suggest a mass formation in flight – or Murmuration. The Murmuration will be at a local green space in October, but at this stage the location is secret.

Barnardo’s charity shop celebrates a decade of donations BARNARDO’S, the UK’s largest and longest-established children’s charity, is celebrating a decade in Henleaze. Its charity shop in Henleaze Road, managed for all 10 years by Judith Swetman, celebrated with a special party for its volunteers. They were joined by Barnardo’s regional director Hugh Sherriffe who thanked them for their support. Barnardo’s has received tens of thousands of items since opening in Henleaze in the summer of 2005. In the last financial year alone it received more than 6,000 donations. During the same period the staff were supported by almost 3,000 hours of volunteering by a team aged from their teens to their 80s, and they now have almost 4,000 donors registered for Gift Aid. Judith Swetman has become a familiar figure to shoppers, donors and others who call in for a chat. Aged 72, she loves the thought

of supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children. It’s what inspires her to make the return bus journey every day from Blagdon to Henleaze. “I can’t believe we’ve been open for 10 years,” she said. “The time has passed so quickly but I’ve enjoyed it immensely. “We have a brilliant team of fantastic volunteers who are wellknown to our regular customers, for whom a visit to the shop is quite a social occasion. “We also receive strong support from the people of Henleaze who are so generous with their donations. Aside from the usual clothes and books, we’ve received lots of valuable items such as jewellery, signed football shirts and Hornby train sets, as well as unusual items such as opera glasses and top hats. “One lady even donated a single light bulb but assured us there was still plenty of life left in it!” Hugh Sherriffe said: “We

are sincerely grateful to all of the staff and volunteers who have worked so hard for so long, raising much-needed funds to support the charity’s work. “Thanks to the Henleaze team’s dedication and commitment, we are able to help even more young people to turn their life around.” The Henleaze shop is open Monday-Saturday from 9am5.30pm and on Sundays from 10am-4pm. The team always welcomes donations of good-quality

THE organ at Henleaze Parish Church is in top form again after repairs costing £12,500. The money was raised through a special appeal which included the production of a CD, and the verdict of members and friends of St Peters, including organist and choirmaster Reg Parker, is that it is sounding as good as it must have done when it was installed in 1927. But there is more to this organ’s history than that. It was built in London in 1869 by Henry (‘Father’) Willis who has been described as ‘the greatest organ builder who ever lived’. It was around this period that Willis also built the organs of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Salisbury Cathedral, Birmingham Town Hall, the old Colston Hall in Bristol and many others that became world famous. The organ, containing 1,082 pipes, had been commissioned by a wealthy benefactor Mr St Vincent Ames – not for a church but for the new village hall at Westbury-on-Trym. The same Mr Ames paid for the building of the hall, and the

Repairs return Henleaze church organ to top form Willis organ featured at a grand opening concert there in June 1869. According to a Western Daily Press report at the time, the concert was a great success, with Mr Frederick Archer of London performing several solos. “His masterly playing was truly a treat,” said the Western Daily. As far as we know Mr Archer only played it once. By contrast Mr Reg Parker has been playing this magnificent instrument for 65 years, at St Peter’s Church. The reason being that the hall agreed to sell the organ to the newly-built church in 1927 for the sum of £200. According to official UK inflation data, that was equivalent to just under £11,000, though experts would value the organ at hundreds of thousands now. For such a magnificent instrument, it seems St Peter’s

An empty St Peter’s, but it is expected to be full when Reg Parker makes his farewell at Christmas got a true bargain. The only possible reservation is where they located the organ in a 20th century building with space. Organist Reg Parker commented: “It is unfortunate that the architect of St Peter’s had little idea of the ideal place for an organ of this pedigree, vanquishing it to the loft almost as an afterthought. “Nevertheless it still has the

nobility of sound which one associates with a ‘good’ organ. It only has four years to its 150th birthday and, of course, bears no resemblance to a modern electric organ with an estimated life of 10 to 15 years. “St Peter’s must therefore treasure this very valuable historic organ and regard it as a legacy from reputedly one of the greatest organ builders who ever lived,” Reg added.

Retirement in sight for organist and choirmaster Reg Parker

HENRY Willis’s magnificent organ and Reg Parker’s talent as organist and choirmaster have provided a rich experience for decades of congregations at St Peter’s, Henleaze. Every Sunday the choir sings an anthem ranging over 400 years of choral music, and the high standard is maintained by choir practice every Friday evening. It is of course excellent news that the organ has undergone some repairs and will sustain its beautifully authentic sound for years to come. Reg is now set to retire - not altogether surprising when you realise he has been organist and choirmaster for 65 years. He taught at Cotham Grammar School in Bristol from 1955 to1983 where he was Head of Music, Head of Sixth Form, Head of A Level Music School and Senior Master. He went on to teach music part time at Bristol University for 10 years, became an examiner

for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Associated Examinations Board (AEB) and a panel member of the Southern Universities Joint Board. He also taught A Level at Redland High School and is currently teaching piano and organ at Badminton School. In 2002 his service to the Church of England earned him the rare award of the Silver Medal of the Cross of St Augustine, the second highest honour the church can give. There are only approximately 500 in the world. The award was given by Archbishop George Carey at Lambeth Palace. “I am immensely proud of that,” he told Voice. “I shall be sad to leave St Peter’s, but circumstances have changed and I shall be leaving a very strong musical tradition which I hope will continue.” Reg is married with one

Reg Parker has played this organ at St Peter’s, Henleaze for 65 years daughter Alison and three grandchildren, Gina, Tom and Seb. Alison teaches clarinet at Badminton School and piano and clarinet privately. All three grandchildren play an active part in church life as servers and sidesmen. Seb, an ex-head chorister at Bristol Cathedral, now sings in the church choir as a male alto (counter-tenor) and as a deputy lay clerk in the cathedral. Reg has long regarded the

traditional service of 9 lessons and carols on the Sunday before Christmas as a musical highlight of the year, and is one of the most popular services, drawing a large congregation to St Peter’s. The service this year will be the last for Reg and hopefully will see a full church once again. “After a lifetime of teaching music, I cannot see myself giving that up.” He added. “I still enjoy teaching at Badminton and giving private lessons.”

Self knowledge – self assurance or limitation or …

KNOWING yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.’ – Aristotle. As I read those words I was struck with an interesting observation. We often express ideas about ourselves and our abilities in quite dogmatic terms. I can or I can’t… I am or I’m not… If we look at the language we use to describe ourselves it can be very telling. For example, if someone describes themselves as ‘tending’ to do something it seems more fluid and allowing for alternative behaviours or beliefs. As we have new experiences and hopefully gain knowledge from those experiences, change is not only possible, it’s inevitable. Just look at how much we’ve changed since we were 5. Is our world getting bigger or smaller? Do we hold the same beliefs? Are we curious, looking deeper or have we decided we already know? Who informs us? Are we becoming more or less capable? Our fixed ideas can give us a sense of security about our world but they can also limit what’s possible. What’s possible in our lives right now? Is what we say about ourselves true or something we decided long ago?

Westbury Elgar scholar puts composer under the spotlight UNRAVELLING the enigma that is Edward Elgar remains the ambition of those who are held in thrall by England’s greatest composer. Famed for his ‘Enigma Variations’ there is much in his life that remains an enigma, including his Organ Sonata. An expert from Westbury-onTrym has explored the subject as deeply as anyone, and the opportunity to share his insights is coming up. On September 26th Dr Martin Firth will give a talk for the Elgar Society at the Bristol Music Club. Bristol-born Martin taught music at schools in the South and Midlands for 17 years before setting up the Music Department at the new University of the West of England in 1992. He retired from UWE in 2007 and lives in Westbury-on-Trym. He became a well-known figure in the musical life of Bristol through playing the organ and conducting major orchestral and choral works, and

recalls – with some emotion conducting Julian Lloyd Webber and the UWE orchestra in Elgar’s celebrated Cello Concerto at Bristol Cathedral. Elgar’s Organ Sonata has never enjoyed the celebrity status of either the Cello Concerto or the later symphonies – possibly because performances were restricted largely to cathedrals with large enough instruments. It was composed in haste in 1895 and was unjustifiably neglected until Gordon Jacob arranged it for orchestra in 1946. The strange story of what is frequently (and with good reason) referred to as Elgar’s Symphony No 0 will be revealed by Martin who, in his time, has conducted the work twice in its orchestral version. “There is real scope to bring this alive for the audience at the Music Club,” he said. “The significance of this story is the transition from a onedimensional piece for organ

Westbury Elgar scholar Martin Firth puts the composer under the spotlight - remembering that Elgar didn’t really like keyboard instruments - to an orchestral work with the tone colours and techniques for which he is most famous. It is a work of truly symphonic proportions – hence its curious nickname of Symphony No.0 as it predates the other two symphonies by many years. Martin added: “I am planning to bring that process to life with

some audience participation, asking people what sort of orchestration they would have added if they were an arranger like Jacob. I think we’ll have some fun with that.” Martin’s Elgar talk is at 2.15pm on September 26th at the Bristol Music Club, 76 St Paul’s Road, BS8 1LP. Admission to visitors costs £3 including refreshments.”

Super Slimmer Runs Free HAVING given up hope of any serious weight loss many years before, Shula, took her first steps into her local Slimming World group and changed her life. Despite many attempts to diet throughout her life her weight rose steadily and at her heaviest weight in 2006 she experienced considerable physical and psychological problems including lower back and hip pain, low selfesteem and depression. The turning point for Shula came when trying on a beautiful green dress. “It was too tight but I loved it and my dear and very supportive husband wanted me to have it. I longed to lose weight and look better in it. My daughter had announced that she was going to have a baby and this was the final spur for me. I wanted to be slimmer and healthy so I could support her

and enjoy my grandchild”. Shula explained, “A friend suggested Slimming World, saying that she felt free to enjoy real food without going hungry, which sounded intriguing! I immediately felt comfortable and reassured that this could work. It wasn’t a diet, no counting calories, but a long term solution to managing my weight.” “The support from the group sessions was unique and powerful. Everyone received some individual attention, we were not judged and our weight never disclosed to anyone. There were many tools to help stay motivated and change old patterns of eating and thinking. To my surprise I lost one and half stone in the first three months! I have now reached my personal target and dropped 5 dress sizes.”

Shula before Shula began to incorporate activity into her lifestyle supported by the Body Magic system at Slimming World. “I have gradually increased my exercise, and recently ran in the Run Bristol 10k. I feel amazing, like a horse that has been let out of the stable to run free for the first time, and I did not even know I was trapped in a stable!” Having lost an incredible 4 and a half stones Shula would like to share her knowledge

THE worldwide launch of Windows 10 has had an immediate impact on Westburyon-Trym independent supplier C J Computing After less-than-conspicuous upgrades by Microsoft in recent years, owner Ian Duxbury has had his fingers firmly crossed for some weeks. He has seen it all before – from the earliest Acorn computers for schools in the eighties through to the latest devices and software. “We and many colleagues in the industry were dreading another Windows 8, but actually we have been very pleasantly surprised,” he said. “it looks good, is easy and logical to follow and offers a relatively easy transition from Windows 7 which so many of our business and private customers have been happily using for years. “Even though we have been kept waiting for new hardware, we helped more than 50 customers with upgrades to Windows 10 in the first month,

Thumbs up for Windows 10 and it will grow from there.” C J Computing started up in 1988 in Patchway and has been on Westbury Hill for 26 years. “We have a very loyal customer base in north Bristol including many silver surfers. Our oldest customer is 94, and she is always interested in new developments,” he said. “There’s another 90-year-old customer who is about to upgrade to Windows 10. “The great thing with this product is that we can say hand on heart that Windows 10 works very well indeed. It offers greater scope but crucially is very intuitive. “This time Microsoft have got it right, and I am delighted to say that our customers are enjoying the experience once we have done the installation for them, or tidied up a few loose ends if they have done it themselves.”

Only Gianni Mens Hairdressing, who are among the C J Computing customers upgrading to Windows 10, have been trading on Westbury Hill longer than Ian Duxbury’s IT business. Ian is pictured helping Dino Marsigliese to work with the new Microsoft operating system.

News WotSoc to fight ‘greedy and squalid’ planning application

51

THE Westbury-on-Trym Society is to fight what it describes as a ‘greedy and squalid little plan’ to erect two small apartments in Canford Lane. The development would be on the narrow verge alongside the relatively new Nos 26 and 28, and opposite Marie’s Bargain Centre and No 31. Hilary Long, Chairman of the Society, told Voice: “As one of our purposes is to try to ensure that Westbury has quality of design in any new building or adaptations of public sites, we are aghast at the current proposal. “This is a greedy and squalid little plan-designed solely to make money for the developer rather than to provide any quality of housing or distinctive architecture for future generations.

These magnificent trees in Canford Lane would have to come down if planning is approved “The area to be used would involve the lifting of Tree Preservation Orders on existing trees, their removal and thus destruction of a valued part of the local landscape. “The required replacement

with other street trees, under planning regulations, would involve a build-out of the narrow pavement there and so subsequent disruption of a parking area absolutely vital to local shoppers and businesses.

“This architectural vandalism in one of Westbury’s most familiar streetscapes is abhorrent to us all and we shall be opposing both removal of trees and any subsequent building on that tiny site.”

Conserving integrity and character FOR those not familiar with The Westbury-on-Trym Society (WotSoc) it was founded by John Lodge in 1971, at a time when many other local groups were started, with the purpose of looking after local buildings, sites and features of historical significance. It set out to conserve the integrity and character of the community as well as improving amenities. The Westbury Conservation Area was formed by the City Council in the same year. The Society’s first task and

subsequent achievement was in forming a small campaign committee to prevent the sale and destruction of the village’s beautiful village hall, built for Westbury in 1869 by Henry Ames of the former Cote House on the Downs and left to Westbury in his will in 1904. The hall was restored to its former glory by the intrepid efforts and voluntary fund raising of many people through the 1970s and 80s and has now become a favourite venue for Bristol, as well as locally, for

events, parties and celebrations of all kinds. “We are therefore proud to announce that after two years work surveying features and landscapes of the whole village and its immediate surroundings, in co-operation with Bristol City Council’s Heritage and Planning Department, an updated Conservation area has now been registered,” said WotSoc Chairman Hilary Long. “We are very grateful to all those members and friends who took part in the surveys, and

News Children stage their own rainbow run for hospice FOLLOWING the success of Children’s Hospice South West’s recent Rainbow Run in Bristol, the Jack & Jill Pre-school in Westbury-on-Trym arranged its own special rainbow event to raise funds for the charity’s Charlton Farm hospice near Bristol. Organised by pupils, staff, parents and friends of the school, the Jack & Jill Rainbow Run at Canford Park raised a total of £2279.28 including £1899.43 through sponsorship and £379.85 from a cake sale and raffle. There was a great atmosphere with all the parents and teachers cheering on the children as they ran or walked the route around the park. Tamara Downes, Head of Community Fundraising at the children’s hospice said: “We were so impressed with the commitment of the pupils and it was so lovely to see the passion for our charity at such a young age.

Jack & Jill Pre-school celebrate their success in raising funds for Children’s Hospice South West. Adults (left to right) are Elaine king (practitioner), Alison Rogers, Heejung Lim and Matilda Mudariki (parents), Julie Claridge (Managing Director of the Pre-School) and Helen Rae (parents and Chair of PPA). “The children looked amazing with their rainbow outfits and hair, and to see so much money raised is heart-warming.” Julie Claridge, Managing Director of the Jack and Jill PreSchool, added: “I was amazed at the incredible fundraising that took place. It was lovely to

see that each child took their sponsorship so seriously.”’ Children’s Hospice South West has three hospices offering care and support for life-limited children and their families across the south west. Services include short breaks, specialist play, music therapy,

activities for siblings, palliative and emergency care, end of life care and bereavement support. The charity relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and events, such as its flagship Rainbow Run, to continue its services.

Know your bunions!

H

OW do our feet morph from a bean-shaped infant foot, to mildly bent big toes, to a

bunion? Well, a bunion is a foot deformity that develops when the foot is pushed forward and/or downward. In heeled shoes, the toe joints are put under excessive force from the weight of the body bearing both forward and downward. Some shoes additionally jam toes into a pointed triangular area. Over time, the toes literally grow into this shape, and the large joint of the big toe produces an overgrowth of bone in an attempt to prevent further

damage to the foot. Bunions can be extremely painful and disabling. Surgical measures include literally sawing off slices of the bony overgrowth. Thought of as a problem in the elderly, they actually start in earlier in life, especially if high heels are worn regularly. Yet often people find their big toes distorting inwards despite wearing ‘sensible’ shoes! Why? Firstly, most shoes, even trainers, are simply not foot-shaped, and will ‘round off’ the big toe. As Gloria Steinem, journalist and feminist said, ‘If the shoe doesn’t fit, must we change the foot?’

Secondly, people tend to see problems like bunions as inherited - “just like mum’s feet”. Our genes occasionally predispose us to foot problems, but it is poor postural habits that allow them to develop. For example, by parking our pelvis forward of our heels and locking out our knees, excessive weight falls towards the delicate front of the foot. This pattern can also involve dropped arches and knee problems, and is often copied from our parents. As Esther Gokhale explains in her book, ‘8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back’, we can best preserve our foot-shape via good posture that uses our whole skeleton correctly. 54 Yoga for Health by

Diana Penny

of Yogawest (www.yogawest.co.uk) THIS month’s pose is for more experienced practitioners, however if you’ve been following the series so far, and are not quite ready to go upside down, you can do the preparation for this pose, stopping short of hopping up. This will improve your upper body strength and get you ready for the day you can go up! Yoga Pose of the Month:

Adho Mukha Vrksasana (full arm balance)

This pose produces seemingly paradoxical effects. Kicking up into it is exhilarating. Then when you are in the pose you are grounded, and yet at the same time you are elevated. It’s the opposite of Vrksasana (Tree Pose), both in orientation, and in how the elements play out. In Vrksasana you are rooted through your feet, in Adho Mukha Vrksasana through your hands. A sense of fluidity is experienced in the legs when you jump. 1. Coming into the pose: Come onto

henleaze&westburyvoice your hands and knees facing a wall, positioning your hands twelve inches away from it. Spread your fingers and press down firmly through the index and thumb side of the palm. Raise your knees up off the floor and come onto your toes. 1 Raise your front groins through your sit bones. Transfer your weight onto your hands, lift your shoulders and draw them and your upper back away from the wall. With straight legs, swing your pelvis toward the wall. 2. (This stage for more experienced practitioners only) Hopping up: Sometimes the fear factor can prevent newcomers to this pose from getting up. In order to overcome fear, look at the floor as you prepare to hop up. Before you jump, you need to know that you can raise each leg high enough to give you the momentum you need to swing up. Stretch each leg up separately — beyond parallel. In other words raise each leg up, one at a time, above hip level — and then you know you have a chance. Now come up, one leg at a time: stretch your right leg up, bend the left leg and spring up. Know that you have to get the pelvis to the wall. 3. In the pose: Straighten your arms and maintain them parallel to each other and the wall. Still looking at the floor, lift your trapezium muscles up, away from your neck. Roll your inner thighs toward the wall and lift. Draw the buttock flesh toward the heels to lengthen the lower back. Slide your heels

up the wall. Distribute your weight evenly on both hands. Still lifting your trapezium muscles away from the neck, release your head, so that the crown faces the floor. Cautions: Do not practice during menstruation. Do not practice this or any other sequence that involves jumping if you have back or knee injuries or any other medical problems. E MO Henleaze & Westbury Library book review Milly Johnson

Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Café I’M recommending a very light summer read this month, something to read whilst sitting on a lounger, in the sun, sipping a tipple of your choice… Jimmy Diamond runs a cleaning firm and thinks he’s the bee’s knees. He has a very patient wife, Connie, to go home

to every night, a secretary madly in love with him and is carrying on an affair with his pretty office junior, who is young enough to be his daughter. Life is great…..well great that is until his wife finds out about his extra marital affair and decides to exact revenge and strike Jimmy where it would hurt the most – his cleaning firm ‘Diamond Shine’ What follows is a story that has you rooting for Connie and the various cleaning ladies that she steals from her husband’s firm to come and work for her own secret cleaning company ‘Lady Muck’. The Sunflower Café is the rendezvous each week where the ladies meet to chat about their past weeks, their personal lives and plans for the future. Love blossoms in unexpected places, Brandon the handsome chocolatier sounds wonderful and Milly keeps you in suspense as to whether all will end happily

September, 2015

for him. Does Jimmy get his comeuppance? Will Connie find love? Will Cheryl be allowed her inheritance? Well you’ll just have to grab a copy and delve in to find out how everything is resolved. Milly Johnson writes what is commonly known as ‘Chick Lit’ or modern romances. She has just launched a new website http://millyjohnson.co.uk all her books appear here in case you become hooked and want to try more.

The Grapes of Wrath SOMETIMES it’s best not to know too much about a book before reading it. This was the case for me with the Grapes of wrath. I knew of course that it was Steinbeck’s undisputed Masterpiece and

that it was set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian Migrant Life because I had read the back cover blurb. I had also seen the photographs of Dorothea Lange but for the most part I was pretty ignorant of the whole thing. It turns out this was a blessing because I came upon the books famous first line and was knocked out. Steinbeck’s writing has a precision that finds the poetry and humanity in the suffering he depicts. The Joad family’s struggle is relentless, “I’ve done my damndest to rip a readers nerves to rags, I don’t want him satisfied” said Steinbeck. Although the book deals with great sorrow and loss it is by no means a depressing read, due to the storytelling and writing which reveals the true spirit of the peoples who suffered and survived and who refused to give up. If you haven’t read this book you’re in for a treat.

Are electric toothbrushes better than a manual brush?

with Dr Nicola White

S

TUDIES suggest that powered toothbrushes with a rotation oscillation action (where the brush rapidly changes direction of rotation) removes plaque and debris better than a manual brushes. We all know that dental plaque builds up on teeth. It is a pale yellow biofilm that develops naturally and contains colonising bacteria that attach themselves to the smooth surface of the tooth. 25,000 species of bacteria exist in the oral cavity and there are 1000 species in this biofilm. Acid is produced from the bacteria as they break down sugars in the mouth. This leads to destruction of tooth enamel and dentine causing decay as well as inflammation of the gums and chronic periodontitis. Teeth should be brushed twice a day, morning and night, at least an hour after eating or drinking anything, especially acidic foods and drinks. Spend two minutes brushing and cover all areas, the inside, outside and biting areas of each tooth paying particular attention to where the teeth meet the gum. Electric brushes are certainly the preferred option and they also help to prevent you pressing to hard, which can lead to wear of the

enamel, sensitivity and gum recession. They are certainly more thorough and significantly reduce the build up of tartar on your teeth. For a new patient check-up including x-rays and a scale and polish for ÂŁ65.00, please call Beau Monde Dental Care, 0117 3303495. We look forward to welcoming you to our practice.

Nic Tiley – Owner www.trainhers.co.uk

Tell us about your company?

Trainhers is a ladies only gym on Kellaway Ave. We have been open since February and are already very popular. Having taught Special Needs for over 30 years I wanted to have a change of direction – so decided to open a gym! I have now retired from teaching and look forward to putting all my energy into building up the gym. I am also training to become a personal trainer. I employ eight staff. These

What service do you provide to the people of Bishopston & Redland? The gym is a 30 minute full body workout ideal for busy women. The age range of our members is from 16 to 86. Most of our members live locally which promotes a good social atmosphere, occasionally members meet for a drink or a meal. We have personal trainers/ fitness instructors in the gym at all times to give advice and support to our members. They help members to achieve their own personal goals. Our Nutritional Therapist, Alex Barton, is on hand to offer guidance on healthy eating. She also gives free talks on weight loss and other common issues. One of our personal trainers is a rehabilitation specialist which is particularly useful for members with health concerns.

What is the best part of running your business and working in Bishopston & Redland? Seeing such a change in the health and fitness of all the

members, giving them increased confidence and improved energy levels. They now have an improved quality of life through rehabilitation and nutrition. It has been great to finally finish school and be able to put all my energy into the gym working with a very friendly, supportive and professional group of people and meeting lots of new people.

What makes your service different from other companies? We offer a more personalised journey to a healthier body. From Day 1 we start to change people’s lives through exercise and diet. We are offering a change of lifestyle. Our trainers are there to help and support from the initial induction through to the six weekly reviews. They also offer and

encourage members individual exercises tailor made to suit each member.

What are your plans for the future of the business? Over time, I would hope to see our opening hours extended. Ally Bussell, one of our personal trainers will be taking the GP referral course which will help many of our members with medical problems. We also have a treatment room which is used by visiting therapists offering massage, semi permanent makeup and reflexology. I would very much like to get a beautician to come work on a regular basis to enhance the services offered to the members. I am sure that the gym will continue to grow and become a well-established name within the local community.
