TRADERS on a busy shopping street are fearing that the introduction of a new residents’ parking scheme is going to destroy their businesses. The shops, on Lower Redland Road, are included in the Cotham North RPZ which is to be introduced this month. Business owners feel that the council has not listened to their concerns, and that the lack of pay and display machines in the area will deter customers from visiting their shops. Patrizio Smith, a barber shop owner of 24 years, said: “There’s no pay and display, apart from at the bottom of the road - it’s mostly just permit holders only. “This scheme doesn’t benefit traders at all. How can the council think that putting a residents’ parking zone outside a row of shops is a good idea? It’s crazy. “We’ve had no consultation whatsoever, and the mayor isn’t listening to anyone.” He added: “The council have said they will review the scheme

Parking fears for businesses in six months, but that might just be six months too late for us - we might all be gone by then. “We’ve been here for so long - we’re just trying to run our businesses and make a living.” There are 12 shops along the street, with each shop entitled to seven customer permits. The cost per permit is £250. David Wiltsher, creative director at 10 Bristol - a design and marketing agency - said: “The fact you cannot park on a street that’s primarily full of traders, unless you’re a resident, seems a bit backward. “Although we won’t be affected as much as the other traders, we still have to purchase permits for our clients and staff. He added: “We’ve not received a great deal of help from the council either. This scheme is just another hurdle for us to overcome.” A council spokesperson has responded: “A number of businesses and residents

requested that we increase the amount of pay and display parking available to customers visiting the businesses at the west end of Lower Redland Road. “This would supplement the pay and display provision at the east end of Lower Redland Road and the provision around the Lower Redland Road junctions with Napier Road, Elgin Park and Greenway Road. “As a result of the feedback we received, the council is now carrying out local consultation on one additional amendment; to change the shared use bays in front of numbers 1 to 11 to pay & display parking only. “This would increase the availability of customer parking for shops in the area, by ensuring that the bays are reserved for short stays (up to three hours) and are not taken up, potentially for extended periods, by permit holders.”

A REDLAND veterinary surgery has already lost several members of staff due to the council’s plans to implement a residents’ parking zone in the area. Zetland Road vets has over 15 members of staff working at the surgery, with many of them travelling from as far as Nailsea and Bristol Airport. The Redland parking zone, which is to be implemented this month, is part of a city-wide scheme to deter commuters from clogging up residential areas with their cars. However, manager of the surgery, Jackie Haynes, says that it is not easy for her staff to access public transport, and travelling by car is their only option. She said: “We’ve already lost a couple of staff members because the parking scheme won’t allow them to drive to work. It’s causing us a lot of problems. “Having to issue customers with permits isn’t very convenient either. They will have to pull up outside, run in to pick up a permit, and then park

Staff quit vets’ surgery over RPZ elsewhere. “If the customer has an injured dog or cat which they can’t carry, they are going to want to park as close to the surgery as possible, not miles down the road. “Also, if the customer forgets to return the permit to us, then we’ve lost a lot of money. Some customers are under a lot stress as they may have had their pet put down, or their pet might be injured - the last thing they’re going to think about is returning a permit.” The surgery is entitled to seven customer permits, costing £250 each. Jackie says that the surgery has been unaware of any consultation, and no-one from the council has been in to speak with them. Posters have been displayed in recent months calling on local clients of the surgery to lease out their driveway or parking space to ease staff members’ worries. The Redland scheme is

the fourth to be approved out of twelve in the current programme, which also includes Kingsdown, Cotham and Redcliffe. Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson, said: “For too long these areas have suffered from pressure from free commuter parking, to the detriment of

residents and customers. “The new scheme, alongside improved public transport and lower speed limits, will help deliver safer, less congested and healthier neighbourhoods.” The Redland and Cotham North scheme will be reviewed after six months.

Going underground RESEMBLING something of a TARDIS, it is difficult to imagine what lies beyond one Redland property’s rubble stone façade. But beneath the ground floor, which encompasses a kitchen, lounge area and WC, are three bedrooms, two bathrooms - one of which is an en suite and two courtyards. It is thought to be Bristol’s first underground house. The unique property - located on Fernbank Road - came about after plans to build a twostory house were rejected by neighbours. Architect Quentin Alder, who runs his own business in Sneyd Park, said: “We were approached by the current developer, as he knew we’d come up with a good idea. “First, the planning application was refused, so we had to submit an appeal. We were then granted permission as long as the house was no higher than the garage roof.” He added: “I thought to myself, ‘if we can’t go up, then we will just have to go down’. It was a difficult construction as we had to build within restricted compounds, so there wasn’t a great deal of room. But it’s really great to finally see it finished.” Originally a forecourt and three garages, the property took six months to build. It is now on the market with Ocean estate agents for £495k. The basement wall is made

from reinforced concrete, a waterproof layer, and insulation to keep heat in during the winter, and heat out during the summer. The building has been designed to include double glazing, gas underfloor heating, high levels of insulation and eight solar panels on the roof. Quentin said: “We wanted to make sure the property was as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. “The good thing about building a property underground is that there is a constant temperature, which will reduce heating bills.” Quentin Alder specialises in historic and listed buildings, as well as new buildings in sensitive locations. The open-plan living room and kitchen area has floor to ceiling windows, and tri-fold doors opening onto the garden, and all three double bedrooms have doors which open out onto courtyards. There is solid oak flooring throughout the property, with carpet in the hall and landing.

BRAVING the elements, an eight-year-old boy from Redland, and his mum, set about on a cycle ride to London - in their pyjamas. The duo - who have raised almost £2,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, a disease which Jake Decker’s granddad had suffered from - cycled 196 miles from Bristol Temple Meads to London Bridge, where the charity’s head office is based. Jake had only learned to ride a bicycle last year, when his mum, Chrissie Decker, took him on a cycle ride to Devizes. Chrissie said: “When we stopped at Bradford-on-Avon, there was a map showing a route to London. Jake turned around to me and said, ‘let’s do it in our pyjamas and raise money for charity’.” It took eight days to reach London, with one day spent at Legoland Windsor. The pair set off on their May half term adventure, which took six months to plan, against a backdrop of torrential rain. Chrissie said: “It was a shame the weather was a bit miserable. We set off from our house, and it was absolutely hammering it

Pedalling in our pyjamas down, but the neighbours were really encouraging, waving us off with flags. “I foolishly hadn’t checked the route properly either before we left, and we missed a turning on our first day, and went off track quite a bit - nine miles in the opposite direction - so we decided to ride cross country, where I then got a puncture.” It took Chrissie and Jake around 12 hours to arrive at their first stop in Bradford-on-Avon, having cycled 40 miles, when it was only meant to take 26. She added: “I think it gave Jake a good idea of what to expect, and what obstacles we could face along the way. It gave him a good frame of mind.” Day three was also challenging for the pair due to contentious weather conditions. “At one point, Jake laid down on the path and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore’, but after day three it got better. “It gave us a really nice opportunity to hang-out, just the

two of us, especially in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.” They rode all day, from morning to evening, along the National Cycle Route 4, stopping regularly to graze and play ‘Pooh Sticks’ at every bridge.

“It was a very proud moment when we arrived in London, and it was lovely to spend the day there. “We’re already starting to look at different routes for next year.”

Second busy year for N. Bristol foodbank

Getting the most out of your veterinary consultation By Sam Harris, head consultation nurse IF your pet becomes ill it is a worrying time. After making an appointment with the vet, it is important to think about what you will say in the consultation to give the best chance of a speedy diagnosis. Your history needs to be detailed, clear and as precise as possible, but not too long. It may help to think ahead of the consultation and write down some important points. The things you might be asked by the vet in your consultation: Duration of the signs: When did you first notice any changes in your pet? Are all other pets in the house well? Water and food intake: Has this changed recently? Is it more frequent or less? Approximately how much water is he drinking? Measuring water intake over a 24hr period is always useful. Has there been any vomiting? If there has, is it straight after food? Does the vomit look like undigested food? Bowel and urinary movements: Are they urinating more frequently? Is the urine normal in appearance? Has there been any diarrhoea? What is the consistency like? Demeanour: Are they acting normally? Are they lethargic? restless? confused? Has there been any changes at home recently? Exercise: Are they slower

than they used to be? Do they appear slow and stiff after exercise or after rest? Any lameness? Panting more? Has their breathing rate increased? Any cough? These things are really important and should be monitored in your pet’s daily care even if they are not ill. Noticing these things early can help a vet determine a line of investigation more quickly and aid diagnosis. If you cannot make it to the vet and need to send another person then write a note to tell the vet all the problems you have noticed. If you can collect a urine sample from your pet that is great, this can help with some diagnoses. Use a clean receptacle. If you are well prepared in advance then both you and your pet will get more out of your consultation with you vet. Remember if you need any advice just give us a call, we’re here to help.

OVER 2,800 people were fed by a foodbank in north Bristol last year - twothousand more than the previous year. And it is thought that this number is set to grow. Stewart North, cofounder of the North Bristol Foodbank, previously told the Bishopston Voice that the reliance on food banks is going to increase over the next three to five years, due to changes in the welfare system. Low income, delays and changes to benefits, redundancy, ill health, debt and homelessness are thought to be the main causes for people seeking support from local foodbanks. A spokesperson for the North Bristol Foodbank said: “It has been a really busy year at the foodbank. It’s been so hard to hear the stories of people who are referred to us but we are pleased to be in a position to respond to their needs, support them, and signpost to other support so they leave with some hope that their situation can change.” The foodbank - which supports families and individuals from Horfield, Lockleaze, Filton, Patchway, Southmead and Bradley Stoke - has partnered up with 103 care professionals who can issue clients with foodbank vouchers, dependent on their needs. One voucher provides enough food for three days, and clients can receive a maximum of three foodbank vouchers in a row. Longer term support is available in exceptional circumstances. On a national scale, 913,138 people were given three days’ emergency care from 2013-14 - triple the number of people that were provided with support the previous year. There are now 423 Trussell Trust foodbanks which have launched across the country, with two new foodbanks opening every week to meet the demand for food. The North Bristol Foodbank - which opened its doors in July 2012 - relies on food donated by the public. Around 28.8 tonnes were contributed last financial year. Food is donated weekly at Revive Charity Shop on Filton Avenue, as well as several other collection points around north Bristol. There are also quarterly supermarket collections. lthough a trip abroad is always nice, a recent visit to Budapest left us with even more than great memories, we left feeling even more proud to be an independent British company. Last month, we were invited to the country by one of our major suppliers. Our hotel overlooked the Danube with views towards the presidential palace right in the heart of the city. It’s a wonderful place to visit and one which I thoroughly recommend. Our hosts were the contact lens company Sauflon, a real British success story. The company has been shortlisted for the Financial Times Fastest Growing British Business Awards since we partnered with them two years ago. Our ethics and principles are similar, albeit as they operate globally they are on a different scale. However, at the end of the day we’re both family- owned private companies. This enables us to make decisions without influence from shareholders and work in partnership to benefit our customers, employees, and the business in general. Sauflon – world first! The biggest recent achievement for Sauflon and one which sets them apart from its competitors has been its multi-focal daily disposable lens - a world first. I’m amazed that everyone who uses reading glasses hasn’t been offered these lenses by their Optician; even if it’s only to wear on an occasional basis- it’s truly life-changing. If you want to know more, come into the Gloucester Road branch- you will definitely see the difference!

This month’s offer... July brings some even more great reasons to visit Lynne Fernandes Optometrists. Clients can get ‘free’ lenses via the company’s Lens Club, plus a ‘free upgrade’ to the Prevencia* blue blocking coating. This coating protects the eyes against the high energy light emitted from computers, phones, tablets and energy saving bulbs that is known to contribute to the eye condition Macular Degeneration AMD. As ever our promise is that you will be: 1. Delighted with how well you see 2. Delighted with you look 3. D elighted with how your spectacles feel 4. Delighted with your easy vision 5. News Andy runs length of the Severn in just five days RUNNING just one marathon is a challenge in itself, but completing nine in five days is almost unthinkable - unless you are St Andrews’ resident, Andy Persson. Five years on from his first marathon along a coastal path in Cornwall, Andy has run 225 miles along the River Severn from the source near Aberystwyth, Wales to Severn Beach, raising an astounding

£6,000 for FRANK Water - a Montpelier-based charity that funds sustainable clean water projects in developing countries. Andy, 49, initially started raising money for the charity in 2012, when he completed seven marathons in seven days, running along the River Thames. He said: “I felt that raising money for a charity that provides water to developing countries was quite apt. I also run a cafe which sells FRANK Water too.” In the build-up to the race, which started on May 29, Andy was running between 60 to 80 miles a week. For the challenge, he ran 26 miles the first day, 46 on the second, 64 on the third and fourth, and another 26 miles on the final day. On one of the days he unexpectedly found himself in the middle of the Worcester 10k

race. He added: “The fourth day was definitely the most difficult. I started at 8am and didn’t finish until 3am the following morning. “I did manage to stop at a pub for a pizza though. I wasn’t sure whether it would be a good idea, but I ate the whole thing, and I felt good afterwards - I needed all the calories.” Andy is one of 10 people to ever complete the Severn Challenge. The race started with just two people, but the other runner dropped out halfway through, leaving Andy to complete the challenge on his own. Checkpoints were provided along the way where Andy could stop for food. He also camped out each night. He said: “I really enjoyed the whole thing, despite having swollen feet on the last day. I’m

now feeling fully recovered. “It’s surprising because I never used to enjoy running at all. But if you run enough, it doesn’t become a chore any more.” It hasn’t been all rest and relaxation though for Andy since his return - he has already competed in the Scafell trail marathon in the Lake District as a “gentle warm down” from the Severn run.

Students get taste of life in Roman times ORCHARD pupils had the opportunity to visit a Roman Museum last month in Cirencester. The museum’s education team challenged the students to carry out an investigation into the lives of four people who had lived in Cirencester (or Corinium as it was named by the Romans) more than 1600 years ago. Through examining replicas of the everyday objects which these people would have owned, and by decoding the Latin inscriptions taken from their tombstones, OSB’s classicists were able to form a detailed understanding of what life was like for their individuals. Ellie Boyd, Lewis Bullock, Michael Loffler and Ayanleh Said brought their discoveries to life when they were transformed into these ancient citizens of Provencia Britannia, complete with togas and sandals.

Festival win for chemistry team A TEAM from Fairfield High School is celebrating success in a science event at Bristol University. The four Year 8 boys won the university challenge contest at The Salters Festival of Chemistry, which was attended by pupils from schools in the South West. The winning team comprised Finley Suttee, Felix Hallett, Bruce Da Silvia and Lucien Chadwick. Teacher Gill Lamming said: “They were a credit to the school.” The event was one of a series across the country organised by The Salters’ Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. It was held in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry and sponsored by the university’s ChemLabS.

Jobs boost at Snapdragons NURSERY group Snapdragons is set to create 30 new jobs when it opens its new site in Horfield. Located in a Grade II listed building, it is the company’s first nursery to open in the city. The new venue, which is set to open its doors in August, will provide around 120 childcare places and will be Snapdragon’s eighth nursery, with three based in Bath and Keynsham and four located in North Wiltshire. HSBC has provided a £1.1 million finance package to support the acquisition and redevelopment of the site in a deal led by senior commercial manager Kevin Wilcox. Snapdragons was set up in 1998 by owners Rosemary and Paul Collard who built an extension on their Wiltshire farmhouse to accommodate a 20-place nursery for local children, including their own youngest daughter Isabelle. Rosemary said: “We have been looking for an opportunity to expand to Bristol for some time and were just waiting for the perfect site, so we are delighted to have been able to buy The Old Chapel. It’s a beautiful building which will make an inspirational setting and we’re looking forward to bringing our proven outstanding care to children and parents of this area.” Area commercial director at HSBC Wiltshire, Paul Maddison, said: “Snapdragon’s is a long-standing customer of HSBC so we are pleased to have been able to support this latest expansion. This will not only provide top class care for local children, it also creates 30 new jobs and boosts the local economy.”

CSI comes to Badminton PUPILS in Year 6 at Badminton Junior School became crime scene investigators after discovering a pretend dead body in their school playground. The Year 6 girls were helped by Year 10 students to work out the cause of death and the

identity of the murderer by using DNA extraction, fingerprinting, chromatography, forensic botany, flame tests, footprint analysis, code breaking and translating witness statements written in Spanish. This cross-curricular and

cross-age group project had the whole school buzzing, as everyone waited for updates. Positive DNA identification and footprint analysis, which suggested the perpetrator had size 10 shoes and weighed 82.5kg, coupled with a compromising witness statement, lead to one of potential six suspects being arrested. One student said: “I enjoyed trying to work out who the murderer was with the clues we were given. I especially liked the DNA extraction.” Headmistress, Mrs Tear, explained: “Giving the girls an opportunity to partake in hands on activities such as this CSI day is hugely beneficial to their holistic learning experience – they certainly valued their scientific and language skills today, well as their team work and logic.”

Back to school range has arrived New styles and brands available. Take the stress out of shopping and pop in, where we will make your experience an enjoyable one, with our friendly team.

Amaliso sauce is hot stuff LOOK out for the prizewinning Amaliso sauce on sale at festivals and school events around the Gloucester Road area this summer. The product has been created by enterprising teenagers from Fairfield High School. The Somali Shidni sauce comes in four flavours - original (tamarind), carrot, coconut and dates – and can add zest to everything from burgers, hot dogs, chips, rice, pizza and salad. A team of Year 10 students taking part in the annual national Young Enterprise contest came up with the chutney, choosing the name Amaliso as an anagram of Somalia. The students finalised the recipe after carrying out taste tests. Their aim was to develop a product that reflects the multicultural nature of their team – members come from Sweden, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Kenya, Holland, Ethiopia, Norway and Somalia - and their school. The school cook is manufacturing the sauce at present, although the youngsters hope to find a commercial producer. The team members are Arafa Moaw, Hiwaaq Dahir, Abdinajib Ahmed, Vanessa James, Maria Ahmed, Samia Osman, Tyreke Angus, Fatima El Elmi and Kawsar Omar. As reported in last month's Bishopston Voice, the students wowed the judges at the area final in Clevedon, where they performed their promotional song to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas' What a Feeling. They were top out of ten schools in the former Avon area, taking three of the nine titles – best Bristol school, best business adviser – Rotary's Ron Stagg - and company programme winner. Last month, the team took part in the South West final and came away with two more prizes – the finance award and best link teacher – Charmaine Clarke. Caroline Tarbuck, from Young Enterprise, said: “ The standard of entries in the competition for 2014 was exceptionally high. Congratulations to all the winners.”

Technology haul as raiders target road A STREET in Redland was targetted by burglars five times throughout May. Police investigating the cases believe that the series of thefts in the Hampton Road area are linked, and they are looking into whether the burglaries were committed by the same people. Hampton Road - a street heavily occupied by students - was initially targetted between May 9 and 10, where two houses were broken into. Items stolen included Macbooks, iPods, laptops, televisions, watches, sat-navs and a passport. Thieves also tried to break-in to a third property on the road, but were unsuccessful, as well as a property in nearby Hampton Park. Three weeks later, on May 30, two other properties were burgled, where thieves took a set of keys, laptops, an iPod and iPad. Officer Martin Dunscombe said: "These offences are all being investigated and we'd appeal to anyone who noticed people acting suspiciously in Hampton Road around the time of the offences to come forward. "We'd also like to remind people about the benefits of installing tracking software on laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Most are free and easy to install and they can help us to locate items and return them to their owners. "Step-by-step videos are available from the Avon and Somerset Police YouTube channel." If you have any information, contact the 24-hour police enquiry centre on 101.

Why not use Mem as temp car park? Now the football/rugby season has ended is it possible as a way of generating casual income the Rovers Memorial Ground can be used for ‘say’ the Bristol Flower Show or a Classic Car Show as the ground is near to bus services and much more accessible than Ashton Court? It could also be utilised as a temporary car park and ride for Gloucester Road shoppers - the parking ticket could be used as a cash discount when buying

Demolition is ironic in war centenary year It is disappointing but not surprising that the DCMS have upheld the decision by English Heritage not to list the Memorial Ground. It is regrettable that English Heritage, along with the Bristol City Council and the mayor, have failed in their duty to protect and enhance the city’s most significant, most inspiring and most poignant war memorial. This important heritage asset should be celebrated. It is ironic that in the centenary years of the Great War, Bristol’s largest war memorial is to be demolished. Sainsbury’s and the directors of Bristol Rovers FC are to blame for bringing this lasting shame to Bristol. Shame is bad

karma – and a bad conscience is bad for sport. Desecration is now on the shopping list. Bristol’s great tribute to the soldier sportsmen who played the Greater Game is sold down the river. The trenches of the Western Front are to be memorialised as chilled food aisles. Will the tills fall silent on Remembrance Day? Reminder to Sainsbury’s: The Memorial Ground is still a war memorial, always will be. Legally the place will also always be a sports ground, whatever is built on the Ground. Jamie Carstairs

MUM LIKE many homes throughout the world, World Cup fever has swept through our house. My son has a World Cup sticker album and he has started Little Kickers football classes at St Bonaventure’s. He hasn’t been interested in football until very recently but is doing well, learning football tricks and was chuffed to pieces to receive his Little Kickers football kit. My daughter is also set to start Little Kickers and has her first class on Saturday. Her ballet classes have now stopped until September so she has also started pre-school gymnastics sessions at Bristol School of Gymnastics on Gloucester Road. Her first session was a hit and she relished every activity. She is growing into a super sporty girl and loves nothing more than to run, scoot and ride her bike. As a family we have been

making the most of the sun and have been getting out and about. We visited the Wild Place Project – a wildlife conservation park near Cribbs – and had a great time. My kids enjoyed seeing the lemurs and loved the indoor play area. My favourite part of our visit was seeing the wolves; it was an experience that I will remember for a long time. And of course, my children have been making full use of the wonderful brand new play area on Horfield Common! In particular, my son has been enjoying the more challenging apparatus and practising his climbing. It is great to see the new play area so busy and so many families enjoying it. Last month, my family and I enjoyed a tapas evening at Playful

Café in Bishopston. Kate and Nico, the owners of Playful Café, aim for parents to have a relaxing evening out with delicious food by providing entertainment and activities for their children at the same time. I can report that we managed to finish four whole courses of fantastic food (yes four!) while our kids thoroughly enjoyed the music, singing and activities laid on for kids throughout the evening. If you would like to find out future tapas evenings at Playful Café, please email info@ playfulcafe.co.uk. If you have primary school aged children, there are after-school French lessons available through ‘French Club’ which has been set up by a local mum named Alice Watson. Alice – a qualified and

experienced French teacher - aims to inspire children’s enthusiasm for the French language and ensures classes are fun and cover themes that are thought up by the children. If you are interested in finding out more, please email Alice on alice_m_watson@msn.com. On Friday 4th July there is a Family Film Night at Bishop Road Community Cinema and the film that will be showing is Frozen. Doors open at 6pm and the film starts at 6.30pm. It is free admission and there will be popcorn and other goodies available, as well as a cash bar. Now you can’t get better than that! Bishopston Mum www.bishopstonmum.com www.bristolmum.com

News THE contentious battle between Bristol Rovers and antisupermarket campaigners has resulted in the football club not being able to move into their new stadium until the 2016/17 season, it has been announced. A judicial review of the planning procedures behind building a Sainsbury’s in place of the ground, and an application to English Heritage to list the stadium as a memorial site, has caused the club to put the project back by a year. Rovers’ chairman Nick Higgs has also claimed that it has cost the club £1.5 million. Rovers are needing to sell their ground in Horfield to the supermarket chain to fund a new 21,700-seater stadium in Frenchay. Mr Higgs has said in a statement: “It’s extremely unlikely that we would be able to complete the build of the UWE Stadium before the start of the 2015/16 season. “This means we will probably not be able to occupy the stadium until the start of the

Wrangle means Rovers will stay at the Mem for an additional season 2016/17 season, as the Football Authorities prevent clubs from moving grounds during a season.” He added: “However, this does not mean the build will be delayed by 12 months; we still intend to get on site and start building later this year. “It is extremely frustrating that these small minority groups have been able to have such a massive impact on this project and associated projects that will bring so many benefits to the local area.” Campaign group, TRASHorfield, has announced that they will now be drawing a close their legal bid against Sainsbury’s. A spokesperson said: “The adverse impacts of the Sainsbury’s development are indisputable and irreversible and we remain determined to do what we can to highlight

and challenge these, seeking appropriate mitigation wherever possible for the damage it will inflict. “We will endeavour to raise awareness of our campaign nationally and publicise the injustices of poor planning decisions taken with little regard for the wishes of local people. “We will continue to keep the council on its toes with

regards to the impacts of poor air quality and inadequate highways planning as Bristol moves towards becoming the UK’s first Green Capital of Europe.” The application, put forward by local campaigner Jamie Carstairs to have the stadium listed as a war memorial site, was also rejected on the grounds that it did not meet the criteria for listing.

Meet others and nurture that nesting instinct . . . The idea for Makey Mamas gestated along with my daughter. I've had a lifelong relationship with being creative and making 'stuff' for others and myself. When I was pregnant that desire was as strong as ever but I struggled to dedicate time to being creative with all that 'nesting'

going on. I wondered, whether, if I'd had regular time to spend on it, with other pregnant women, that I would have had more to show for my intentions. With Makey Mamas, I want to enable other women; both pregnant and new mums, to nurture that creative instinct. So I’m offering a range of 'makey' workshops where the women can learn new skills,

make lovely things for their bumps and babies and relax with other likeminded women. Workshops include: Learning bump and baby photography, Natural product making: balms and butters, Bootie making, Toy making, Patchwork making, Casting bumps and babies misty@makeymamas.co.uk

News Weeds in tin cans, pom poms on a bike – it must be Big Green Week GLOUCESTER Road Central “got growing” last month, as part of Bristol’s Big Green Week. The event, which ran from June 14-22, saw traders along the high street growing flowers in planters made from recycled objects outside their shops. Many of the planters, such as the enamel bath outside Room 212 donated by The Reclaimers shop - will be left on the pavement to brighten up the street for the rest of the year. Owner of Room 212, Sarah Thorp, used the festival as an excuse to create a garden on the pavement at the front of her shop. She said: “I love pottering around in the garden, so Big Green Week inspired me to get growing out on the pavement. “I’ve borrowed a planter from the Golden Hill Community

allotments to grow lots of veggies. I pick a bit of lettuce for my lunchtime sandwich and I’m loving the curly kale.” To round off the week’s event, the Golden Lion pub held a community festival on June 22 with live music and market stalls on Cambridge Road. Other live music was on offer from celidah band Highly Strung at the Chimp House, and local musicians were invited to play up and down the street. Moodles and Room 212 offered creative workshops using recycled materials, including making hedgehogs out of old books. Children from Bishopston Beanstalks also spent a session planting flowering weeds in recycled tin cans, which were attached to a lamp post. A mystery bike covered in

green pom poms was also parked up on the street for a week. Building on the success of Mayfest and Big Green Week, Gloucester Road Central plans

to go even bigger, better and greener for next year, when Bristol is Green Capital for Europe.

The gift that pays for itself How leaving money to charity can save you Inheritance Tax

By Shelley Faulkner, solicitor with AMD Solicitors While most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

Reduced rate of Inheritance Tax Where somebody dies after 6 April 2012 the rate of Inheritance Tax applied to the estate can be reduced from 40 % to 36 % (in other words by 10 %), provided that at least 10 % of the estate passes to charity. Clearly it is not possible to determine in advance exactly what value the assets you leave by Will will have on your death for Inheritance Tax purposes, or what 10 % of the total value

will be. However a Will can be worded to provide that a gift of 10 % of the value of your estate at that time is given to a charity or charities of your choice. The effect of this will be that the rate of Inheritance Tax payable on the whole estate is reduced from 40 % to 36 %. In same circumstances, it has been calculated that this reduction in the tax bill can serve to leave the estate, even after payment of the gift to charity, with a value as high as if the gift had not been made. Thus the gift can in some cases quite literally pay for itself. Even where a Will has not been prepared in these terms, it may be possible to take advantage of this tax break. If the beneficiaries of the estate agree, it is possible to effectively amend the terms of a Will within two years of the date of death. A ‘Deed of Variation’ can be drawn up which sets out the family members’ agreed arrangements

for the distribution of the estate, and the estate can then be divided as if the Will had been made in these terms. A Deed of Variation could therefore provide that 10 % of the estate is to pass to a chosen charity or charities, making the estate as a whole eligible for the reduced rate of Inheritance Tax. This change in the law is clearly very good news both for charities, and potentially for some estates as well. However the detail of the application can be complex. For example, the estate is divided into different ‘components’ depending on how the property will pass to the beneficiaries, in order to calculate whether the 10 % test has been met. Taking specialist advice on the implications for your particular circumstances is therefore essential. AMD’s team of experienced private client solicitors and practitioners includes full

members of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the leading professional body in this field. We offer a free initial consultation for new clients. Why The Grace will favour grown-ups THE team behind the acclaimed Zazu’s Kitchen are opening their second pub in three months. The former Robin Hood’s Retreat on Gloucester Road is undergoing an extensive refurbishment, and is scheduled to open its doors as ‘The Grace’ on July 4. The £125,000 refit includes an extension and redecoration of the front bar, a refitted kitchen, a new toilet block and improvements to the rear patio. Aimed specifically at “grownups”, The Grace will offer a tapas-style menu, alongside a wide range of real ales, craft beers, cocktails and a quality wine list. Diners can expect a menu boasting small dishes with Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and British influences. Besides the tapas-style menu, there is a selection of bar snacks - including soft boiled duck egg and iberico fat soldiers, and griddled halloumi and harissa

tapenade - as well as pizzettas. The Grace also intends to introduce Sunday roasts which have become a popular feature at their sister pub in Easton, The Greenbank. Wilf Penfold - who has worked in many of the city’s acclaimed kitchens, including The Albion, the Kensington Arms and Berwick Lodge - has been assigned as head chef. He said: “Zazu’s has built a growing reputation for producing clean, fresh dishes which pack flavour and The Grace will be no different. “The idea will be to cater for friends who want to enjoy a drink in a lovely, sociable setting whilst grabbing a decent bite to eat as well. It can be a few nibbles or several small plates – whatever suits the mood.” Chicken and girolle mushroom skewers in tarrogan and truffle mayo; oxtail croquettes with parsley, shallots and capers; and courgettes, chilli, mint and smoked ricotta are just

From left, business owners James Savage and Dougal Templeton a few of the dishes which will be on offer. The new-look garden, including ample seating, will have plants, scented climbers, fairy lights and lanterns to create an atmospheric haven off the busy Gloucester Rd. The Grace is the team’s fourth venture, with a Zazu’s kitchen located nearby on Gloucester Road, as well as on North Street, and The Greenbank in Easton. The business was launched by three successful Bristol entrepreneurs: James Savage, Dougal Templeton, and Toby Bywater.

James said: “The name of the pub - The Grace - hints at a lot of things. It’s a little bit of a nod in the direction of W G Grace, the Bristol born cricketer, but there is also a lot of meaning behind the word ‘grace’, which we felt was in-fitting with the pub.” Toby added: “The pub had got a little run down and unloved as of late but we are confident customers will enjoy the fresh look and improved drink and food offering. “It also seems appropriate to be opening on Independence Day as we pride ourselves on being an independent set-up.”

A celebration of all things South Glos Preparations are hotting up for the first South Gloucestershire Show this August. Show organiser Darren Hawkins tells Bishopston Voice why the time is right for us to celebrate our wonderful region and what we can expect at the much anticipated two-day extravaganza "SOUTH Gloucestershire is a beautiful county with a rich and varied community and many towns and villages and some fantastic events held in each. But with no city it has always lacked a real focal point for the people of South Gloucestershire to come together as a whole and celebrate what it means to live and work in the area. This is where the idea for the South Gloucestershire Show came about. Although many might refer to the event as a ‘county show’ we feel the South Gloucestershire Show is much more than that. Although the rural landscape and way-of-life is represented, we didn’t want the show to become an agricultural show with limited appeal. We want our show to be a big party that everyone can enjoy no matter what their age or interests or background. A show for everyone! The South Gloucestershire Show will be held at The Windmill Fisheries Showground, Westerleigh Road, BS37 8QZ, as a celebration of all things South Gloucestershire and a showcase for lifestyle and leisure

in and around the county. The show takes place on the August 2 and 3and gates open at 10.30am on both days with live music till 9pm. The show will bring together the people of the county for a weekend of fun and entertainment and has amazing attractions for visitors of all ages, stuff for under 5s too. Amongst the usual mix of big brands, smaller retailers, beer tent and food stands, visitors to the show can expect to try their hand at motorsports or learn how to change a car tyre in a pitstop situation. Also for the motoring fans there will be a classic car show - organised by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club - and an interactive 4 x 4 area. There will be a chance to have a go at golf, fishing and shooting with top professional coaches and to watch the daredevils from the Extreme Wheels perform their tricks in the cycle show area. There will even be hot air balloons. Visitors can watch and participate in the fun and games in the main arena and our special kids zone, which includes Little Tikes Town,

Jingaloo and Punch and Judy, will keep the little ones entertained all day. If all of that hasn’t tired you out then you can dance until 9pm to the sounds of some of the best musicians from our region and beyond at our mini music festival. Acts include Soul Side and X Factor stars Mia and the Moon. Although plenty of parking will be available, we will do everything we can to make cycling to the event a genuine option. The Showground itself is situated along the Avon Cycleway that connects areas in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset. The show organisers have been working closely with leading sustainable travel charity Sustrans who will be attending the show over the two days providing

both entertainment and practical advice for visitors who want to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their fitness at the same time. There will also be prizes to be won for anyone who registers with Sustrans and cycles to the event with a star prize of a £500 mountain bike kindly donated by Marin Bikes. If you would like to book your tickets early and avoid the queues on the day then please visit the website at www.southglosshow.co.uk for details of how you can purchase your show tickets online. See you at the show!" You can find the South Gloucestershire Show on Facebook/SouthGlosShow and on Twitter @ SouthGlosShow

Plaque for Rik – forever a Young One A BISHOPSTON property made famous by The Young Ones - a British sitcom starring Rik Mayall - is to have a plaque outside commemorating the comedian who died last month. The landlord of the house, Mike Kendall, has said that he is happy for a blue plaque to be affixed to the property, located on the corner of Broadway Road and Codrington Road, in memory of the star. Flowers, candles and a glass jar with an anarchist symbol,

still adorn the outside wall with heartfelt messages and condolences. One message wrote: “Dear Rik, thank you for all the colour you brought into our lives.” Another said: “RIP Rick, you’re the best and will be missed by all. It’s a shame you couldn’t cheat death twice.” Mayall was recognised for his outlandish, energetic character and alternative, “post-punk” approach to comedy. As well as cult classic sitcoms, he also starred in several films, Drop Dead Fred (1991) and Guest House Paradiso (1999). The Young Ones series, which was aired on the BBC from 1982 to 1985, featured four students, played by Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan. The property now houses four flats; one is

owned and the other three are rented. According to Mr Kendall, the series was mainly filmed in a studio, but there is still the recognisable inner stained glass door that was in the hall. Mr Kendall said: “It is a fabulous piece of Bristol history and an iconic building in that phase of new politically aware comedy of the 80s. “It is great that it is being recognised. The Young Ones only made 12 episodes and yet made an indelible mark on British comedy.” Mayall passed away on June 9 after suffering from a heart attack.

When it comes to flooring there are a huge number of options

W

ood flooring is a popular choice for the home and workplace for many reasons: it is low maintenance, hard wearing and suitable for allergy sufferers. It only requires regular sweeping, vacuuming or

washing with a mop. For any food spills or dirt deposits a suitable specialist cleaner can be supplied. If you wish to restore your hardwood floor, it is possible to get dust free sanding followed by refinishing in your choice of colour, oil or lacquer. This process can be carried out a number of times should it be required. The great versatility of vinyl makes it a great flooring option for both residential and commercial premises and is suitable for any budget. There are endless styles and effects that can be achieved with this hardwearing and maintainable type of floor such as marble, stone, and wood, as well as a variety of geometrical patterns if you would like something a little different. When it comes to carpet there is a large selection to choose from: very traditional styles in luxurious velvets and twists, ideal for bedrooms and sitting rooms through to natural hardwearing carpets for entrances and hallways and bold, colourful and patterned designs for statement staircases. Carpets are an ideal way to bring warmth to any room as they are warmer than most other flooring types with the added advantage of keeping sound levels down.

Time for bed . . . with the Cornish Bed Company

O

ur factory was setup in the late 1980s to maintain production of traditional iron & brass beds. We handcraft beds that are indistinguishable from original antique beds using traditional casting techniques and quality materials. The company was purchased by a major bed and

mattress manufacturer in the nineties and then sold on to a multinational bed company in 2002. The owners concentrated solely on manufacturing a few beds for the wholesale market and leading high street brands including Laura Ashley and Marks and Spencer. In 2004 at the end of the factory lease they took the commercial decision to take production abroad and shut down the factory in Cornwall. As retailers of these beautiful brass and iron bedsteads in Bristol we decided to stop the factory’s closure by negotiating a new lease and purchasing the remaining tooling and materials. We continue to concentrate on bespoke beds to sell in our Bristol and Cornwall showrooms. We now offer an exciting and unique collection of bed bases, mattresses, and wooden beds with a high quality home delivery service.

Guilt-free, green and incredibly stylish too

A

S an interior designer I am often contacted by wouldbe suppliers, keen for me to consider placing their products in my schemes. Every once in a while something truly special catches my eye, and one stunning example I would like to share is local company Land Rugs. Being based a mere hop away in Redland, Land Rugs chimes well with the fervent shop-local culture of Bishopston. But although these masterpieces are hand-knotted on the other side of the world in Nepal, they are ethically manufactured. Certification by the anti child labour NGO Good Weave ensures and proves fair adult wages have been paid to the weavers, and that no illegal child labour has been employed during production. While sustainability and fair trade ethics are valiant and should be fundamental to all business, the beauty, quality and performance of

product designs must be of primary importance. The wonderful thing about Land Rugs is that not only are they right on, guilt-free goods, they transcend any notion of hippiness by being luxurious and extremely stylish, drawing upon a very interesting and particular palette. Created from the oeuvre of prolific Modernist artist Pip Benveniste, some rugs depict her abstracted landscape paintings, while others illustrate a more graphic aesthetic. Benveniste’s vast and dedicated contribution to art across several mediums has been under-represented by patriarchal art historians, but is now being served a level of justice both by archivists and through Land Rugs. This rich artistic heritage mixed with the exquisite craftsmanship of the Nepalese weavers imbues these unique rugs with a kind of truth and authenticity entirely absent from

The wonderful days of fine, warm weather, have prompted me to get out of store all the garden furniture, A very sorry looking display suggested a need for refurbishment. The small handbrush soon cleared all the spiders and their webs, and a rub with sandpaper cleared the flakey remains of old wood treatment. A large sheet of polythene on the grass, and I was underway with the stain and brush. Soon the chairs looked quite smart, and the table when oiled was presentable. Fortunately we have been able to use during the recent fine weather. I was entertained during all this by our resident robin, which at the cost of a handfull of crumbs performed several songs. In the last four weeks we have had the opportunity(pleasure!) of helping to restore a neglected but well stocked garden. Quite small, about 40feet by 15feet it gets sun during the day and is pleasantly private. An initial inspection showed several shrubs, a Clematis “Montana”, several roses and numerous border plants. A patch of grass within the garden was given a quick haircut and trimmed edges and a paeony appeared under a honeysuckle, which was making good progress up a trellis and into

Feed, weed and water for summer beauty next door. We have made a plan of general maintenance and will be working at it during the summer. Around the garden we can see good results from early sowing of vegetable seeds. We have picked the first lettuce and some radish, with beetroot not far behind. We planted some dwarf climbing beans within the last few days of May. Ofcourse the grass grows, the compost bin fills and there is an abundance of shrubs coming into flower. The clematis, three of which looked dead burst into life and show some buds. Sweet peas anytime now to give some scent and hydrangeas and rhododendrons in bud. What for July? Check roses for Blackspot, lillies for the dreaded lily beetle, start a feeding programme for the emerging shrubs and hanging baskets on their brackets. There is still plenty of time to feed, weed and moss kill on the lawn, spike if it is compacted and spread some top dressing. Make sure that stakes and canes are in place as the taller plants start to gain height. It is so much easier to contain plants in a cage rather than struggle to pick them up after a storm. Watering!. Keep a watch on pots and give them a

drink late evening or early morning. We have had a couple of surprises in the garden. Two big Scabious have appeared in one bed, apparently after taking a holiday last year. We have adjusted smaller plants to avoid overcrowding. And a Verbena Bonariensis has appeared. Quite a tall plant, it has a very open top which one looks through with a purply haze. What fun!.

This season has been a mixture of success and failure. Gardening is never predictable but for some reason I have had more problems with pests, diseases and poor germination than normal. My plot is certainly not up to my expectations and if it wasn’t for the kindness of neighbours with offerings and a few purchases of plants it would be a little bare. Perhaps the mild winter has caused the pest problem as there seems to be more losses to slugs and snails than normal. As for poor germination I can’t offer an explanation. I thought repeating the method and timing of previous years would work but in some case e.g. carrots this has not been the case. On a positive note the plants that are growing look fairly healthy but it is important to maintain the watering during a dry spell. Don’t sprinkle the water on the surface but make sure you give the soil a good soaking particularly around the runner beans, courgettes, squash, celery

Plague of pests on the plot and pumpkins. The little and often rule does not apply to watering plants grown in the soil but does apply to plants in pots. Remove weeds as much as possible as this ensures your plants get the maximum benefit from the water supplied. By now cropping of asparagus has stopped and the plants left to grow as this ensures there is energy in the crowns for next year’s crop. Look out for the rather attractive asparagus beetle and remove them by hand or use an insecticide if they are abundant. If left unchecked they will mate and lay their eggs ready to invade next year’s crop. My crop of garlic has already died back so I will lift them soon and dry the bulbs ready for storage and it won’t be long before the autumn sown onions will be ready. This season’ strawberry crop has been excellent with good sized tasty fruit in abundance. Once you have picked the last fruit keep an eye on the “runners “that most strawberry plants naturally produce. These will root which is fine if you want to have more plants but left alone and the strawberry

bed will become overcrowded and less productive. The “rooted runners” will need to be carefully dug up and either replanted or put into pots for planting later. After cropping trim the foliage with shears as this will encourage new growth and healthier plants for next year. If your strawberry plants are more than three years old they will need to be discarded but don’t plant new ones in their place but in a new area and if I have spare “runners” I will return the favour by offering them to my neighbours.

Personalising your home "Whether we realise it or not we're all interior designers. We design our own living space all of the time. It may be a simple design choice such as moving that picture frame from the window sill to the mantle piece, just because it looks better there, or it could be all encompassing such as a complete redecoration of a room. Whatever design choices we make your home is your sanctuary, your own space with which to do whatever you like. Your taste maybe modernist, minimalist or influenced by a particular period such as Victorian, but we all have one thing in common. That is we all want to be surrounded by things that we love, feel comfortable with, make us happy or inspire a particular mood. But how do you achieve this? Stylish picture frames are a simple and traditional way of decorating your home with reminders of loved ones and happy events. How about a pretty cushion to add a splash of colour or a footstool for comfort? A beautiful picture can provide a focal point for a room and a wonderfully scented candle can lift or inspire a mood.

At bijoux gifts we have a wide range of home interiors to suit a variety of styles and budgets. Your own style is very personal to you, but we can help inspire you with interior ideas that are not only a thing of beauty but can also serve a functional purpose. Home interiors should not be seen as a guilty pleasure, just a pleasure."

Cary Grant stencil arrives on Glos Rd HOLLYWOOD superstar Cary Grant has returned to Bishopston - in the form of a life-size stencil. The piece, by Bristol artist 'Stewy', is above Room 212 in Gloucester Road Central - less than a mile from Hughenden Road where Cary Grant (born Archibald Leach) lived before finding fame and fortune in the USA. Grant - recognised for his dashing good looks and demeanour - was named the second "greatest male star of all time" by the American Film Institute. His Girl Friday (1940) and Bringing up Baby (1938) are just a few of the titles he starred in. Artist Stewy is best known for stencilling iconic people nearby the place they are associated to, including Brunel, Blackbeard and Darth Vader next to the former Mud Dock Deli. His work can also been seen in London, Brighton, Manchester, Hastings and Birmingham. Owner of Room 212, Sarah Thorp, is delighted to have the stencil of Grant above her shop. She hopes that there will be more events in the local area to commemorate the actor.

Straw bale shelter at community garden USING eco-friendly and renewable materials, a straw bale building has been crafted at a local community garden, providing a space for charities, organisations, schools and toddlers groups. The building, which measures 6.5m by 3.5m, has enough space for talks, demonstrations and a place for shelter during outdoor activities and fairs. Co-ordinator at the Golden Hill Community Garden, Lucy Mitchell, intends to use the straw bale building, alongside the outdoor covered cooking area and on site clay pizza oven for foodrelated events, utilising the ingredients grown on site. She said: "This wonderful resource will be perfect for the local area and it provides a unique location for community groups to plant, grow and learn." The site’s eco credentials are further boosted by a solar powered water pump which draws water from an underground well to two rainwater tanks at the top of the site. The pump can produce around 500 litres an hour for the community garden and allotments without the need for mains water. According to Pete Clee, project and site supervisor, it will reduce the garden's energy bills by at least three quarters. The straw bale building - constructed by Nico Smith and Julian Scott Bolton from Red Kite Build - is due to open in the first week of July.

A POPULAR charity shop on Gloucester Road has contributed over £170,000 towards patient care at St Peter’s Hospice making it the most profitable store in Bristol. The Horfield shop, recognised as “Bristol’s only charity department store”, has generated enough money to pay for over 100 patients to receive care in the comfort of their own homes. St Peter’s - a Bristol-based charity, caring for adults with life-limiting illnesses - aims to improve the quality of patients’ last few days or weeks, while extending care and support to their families and loved ones. All care is provided free of charge, but costs the charity around £18,000 a day. The hospice relies on money from Gifts in Wills, donations, fundraising and their stores. St Peter’s Hospice operates 47 shops across Bristol and surrounding districts, all raising valuable funds to support patient care. The shop, which is on the corner where Dongola Road and Gloucester Road meet, is split across two floors, and also sells furniture.

Where were you in July 2005? ALMOST a decade on, theatre group, Kelvin Players, is looking at how lives were affected by the London bombings. Challenging and powerful, Simon Stephens’ play “Pornography” was the first production to confront the attacks in London on June 7 2005. The play also focuses on several other events which surrounded the bombings, including Live 8, and the London 2012 Olympic bid. Pornography draws attention to several unconnected scenes set across the capital, all featuring characters touched by

the events of those few days. A brother and sister confront illicit feelings for one another; a lonely widow tries to make sense of modern day life; an academic meets a former student by chance; an angry schoolboy becomes besotted with his teacher; a working mother takes revenge on her boss; and a young man boards a train to London with single-minded resolve. Director Josh Cooper said: “Where were you is the question we’re asking, because for most of us these events played a significant part of our recent history. Pornography tackles very recent events and very modern issues, and is a must for anyone looking for a thoughtprovoking evening. “All of those characters featured are searching for a connection in an urban environment – a subject that’s as relevant today in a transient city like Bristol as it was in London nine years ago.

“Each character in the play in turn goes on to make some sort of transgression, and this shows the complexity of human and social relationships in the modern city.” Stephens is also recognised for his adaptation of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in

the Night-Time’. The play will be running July 8 to 12 July, from 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 on the Tuesday night, and £10 on Wednesday through to Saturday. To book online visit: www.kelvinplayers. co.uk, or call the booking line on 0117 959 3636.

Then come along to Bristol Lawn Tennis & Squash Club and ‘pay and play’ for £5 per tennis or squash court (subject to court availability)

Other activities include: 6 week tennis and squash group coaching courses, cardio tennis, aerobics and circuit training, yoga, pilates and boot camps. There are 13 tennis courts, 6 squash courts, free parking, 2 bar lounges with TV’s to watch those great sport matches, a gym, sauna and catering on 3 days per week. A range of memberships available on request. A warm welcome is guaranteed. Call in person or telephone reception on 0117 9731139 to find out more and book your first session (terms and conditions apply)

with the result that all the tenderness in the scenes with his witty and patient wife Kate is lost and you can’t help thinking that the King might want to reconsider his wish that some night-tripping fairy had swapped the infants at birth. Elsewhere, Anthony Sher is a gloriously ebullient Falstaff whose assertion that his recruits are ‘food for powder’ as they limp and shuffle across the back of the stage, prompts a look of incredulous horror from Hal and reminds us of the ruthless and predatory side of the dishonourable knight’s nature. Perhaps the better comparison in this production is that of the young prince and Old Jack. I look forward to seeing Hal’s inevitable rejection of his companion in Henry IV Part II, which, incidentally, is being broadcast live at Cinema de Lux on 18th June.

his father’s former friend, the Earl of Northumberland, who is now fomenting rebellion. Early in the play King Henry expresses sorrow that Northumberland is ‘father to so blest a son … who is sweet Fortune’s minion and her pride’ while ‘riot and dishonour stain the brow of my young Harry’, and for the play to work properly, we must see the development of Hal as he begins the process of breaking away from Falstaff’s negative influence to become the equal of Hotspur in valour on the battlefield and, later, the victor at Agincourt. The problem with this production lies not with Alex Hassell’s portrayal of Hal, which, aside from a rather flippant interpretation of the famous ‘I know you all’ soliloquy, is spot on, but Trevor White’s Hotspur, who, far from being an dutiful and heroic foil for Hal, is a maniacal liability. He is almost cartoonish in

Most of us long for the summer, but for those who suffer with hay fever, summer can bring months of misery. Pollen from trees, grass and weeds cause millions of Brits to suffer symptoms from watery, itchy eyes to frequent sneezing and an itchy throat, nose and ears between May and September. So, here are some tips fro a sneeze-free summer from Dr Joe Unsworth, consultant immunologist at Spire The Glen Hospital Bristol: 1. Be prepared – lots of people think hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen released from flowers. In fact in the UK it’s mainly the pollen from trees (March – May) and grass (May-September) and to a lesser degree weeds. Knowing what pollen triggers your symptoms (a simple safe skin test can give results on the spot) helps to time the start of your treatment. For some people occasional use of medication may suffice, but for others daily preventative treatment (starting a week or so before symptoms

Wear sunglasses – itchy eyes can be one of the most debilitating symptoms of hay fever, but wearing sunglasses can help a little to block the pollen from reaching the eyes in the first place. 3. Shake it off – your clothes and hair can act as magnets for pollen. If you’ve been outside, take a few minutes to give your clothing a good shake before you go indoors. Have a shower, wash your hair and change into clean clothes to minimise symptoms once you’re inside. 4. Chill out – a link has been found between stress and hay fever. The higher your stress levels, the worse your symptoms. Exercise can be a useful way to relax, but avoid doing it outside in the early morning or evening. If your symptoms are really bad, consider an activity that you can do indoors such as yoga or swimming. 5. Cut out booze – Alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the

body, which can make hay fever symptoms worse. Cutting back on your intake of wine, beer and spirits could really make a difference to how badly you suffer. 6. Consider alternative options – the best treatment is nasal drops or sprays containing corticosteroid (strong antiinflammatory), with or without

antihistamines and eye drops. But when all these just aren’t doing the trick, it could be worth considering immunotherapy, which involves a gradual introduction of the allergen into the body to build up a resistance. It is usually given via injection or tablet, but must be done in a specialist medical centre in case a serious allergic reaction occurs.

I have a keen interest in the environment and an appreciation of art. About two years ago I started to look at creating my own. Sculpture was a natural choice for me because I have never been great at drawing or painting and working with found objects was a way of marrying my interest in art and the environment. What inspired me to create the robot sculptures is that from a young age I have enjoyed sci-fi and the art that goes into creating sets, puppetry, and particularly robots. For me, creating something that is fun and has a personality is important because it hopefully appeals to lots of people, makes them smile and gets them to look at rubbish differently.

E MO with staff from Cheltenham Road Library Adult Fiction - Read by the Library Reading Group in June, now Book of the Month for July

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2009) BLURB: England, the 1520s. Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, charged with securing the divorce the pope refuses to grant. Into this atmosphere of distrust and need comes Thomas Cromwell, first as Wolsey’s clerk, and

bishopstonvoice

later his successor. In Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel brings the opulent, brutal world of the Tudors to bloody, glittering life. It is the backdrop to the rise and rise of Thomas Cromwell: lowborn boy, charmer, bully, master of deadly intrigue, and, finally, most powerful of Henry VIII’s courtiers. ‘Lock Cromwell in a deep dungeon in the morning,’ says Thomas More, ‘and when you come back that night he’ll be sitting on a plush cushion eating larks’ tongues, and all the gaolers will owe him money.’ AMAZON REVIEW: “I LOVED this book! Sure, it takes a while ‘to get your eye in’, what with the lack of speech marks and the number of people called Thomas, Henry, Mary, etc, but once you do, you can’t put it down! And as with most things in life, the more effort you have to put in, the more rewarding the result. And that was definitely the case with this book. Once you get your head round the relationships between all the different characters, you can start just getting lost in the writing - especially in the wit, cunning and audacity of Thomas Cromwell! This is a real beast of a book and I found I had to read it in short bursts. It’s definitely not one to read when you’re tired either, or you’ll miss lots of little witty asides or very subtle shifts in power. But each time I put it down I would be desperate to pick it back up again.” Children’s Fiction - Read and enjoyed by Reuben Betts (10 years old) Tintin in Tibet by Hergé BLURB: The world’s most famous travelling reporter is devastated at the death of a dear friend. But what if all is not as it seems? Could Chang still be alive? Tintin’s friend Chang has been killed in a terrible plane crash and

July, 2014

Tintin is distraught. But after a strange dream, he becomes convinced Chang is alive. Together with Captain Haddock, he sets out on an impossible mission, an adventure deep into the mountains, through blizzards and caves of ice. They must find Chang at all costs! REUBEN’S REVIEW: Tintin in Tibet is a graphic novel about a young reporter whose friend is rumoured killed in a plane crash, but Tintin believes he isn’t dead, so he goes on a quest into the mountains of Tibet. But when Tintin arrives there is no sign of his friend, Chang. So is he still alive after all? This read left me on the edge my seat wondering what was going to become of Tintin and his friends. I hope you will enjoy this as much as me, and if you were wondering, there are lots of graphic novels at your local library. For these books and many, many more great titles, come along to Cheltenham Road Library and let us point you in the right direction. Gales of Westbury Park. Andrew Gale - Director

Tell us about your company? I come from a long line of Bristol butchers going back 150 years and my family previously owned and worked a pig farm for 30 years with a farm shop rearing our own turkeys for the festive season until sadly the area was acquired for re-development. With our history and experience in the butchery business it seemed a natural progression to open a butchers shop in our local area and Gales Farm Meats in Filton was introduced. This is where I learnt all my butchery skills from my Dad who was an apprentice butcher himself from the age of 15, working with his father who managed a few butcher’s shops himself. I worked at our Filton shop for 25 years with my Dad and brother until I decided to look for another shop to expand the business and that shop was Kerswells. With Kerswells being a butcher’s shop since 1905 and having a very good reputation I decided this was an ideal opportunity to carry on my business so took over the shop in June 2010 so this month will be our 4th Anniversary. I run the shop with help of Bob who worked at Kerswells since the age of 19 and is now 63 and I am sure seen many changes along the way.

What service do you provide to the people of Bishopston & Redland?

who are looking for good quality produce and hopefully it will be this generation that will take the business into the future.

What makes your service different from other companies? We still have a farm & farm shop in the family who provide us with Beef & Lamb which is hung for up to 5 weeks to develop succulent tender meat with a superb flavour. I also have close links with the Gamekeeper at Badminton Estate to provide local seasonal game (pheasants/ venison) and when I have the time I like to go out myself as I am a shooting/ deerstalking enthusiast and also have a brother-in-law who is also a Head Keeper on a renowned shooting estate who often supplies me with Venison.

What are your plans for the future of the business? We intend to improve the shop premises and possibility of customers ordering via our website as we get many enquiries from all over the county so looking to expand the business even further. We are also hoping to take on another member of staff as the business is growing and maybe this will allow me to indulge in my shooting hobby.

Gales of Westbury Park

31 North View, Westbury Park, Bristol. BS6 7PT. Tel. 0117 9736177 www.galesfarmmeats.co.uk.

We provide local free range meat, game & poultry with the knowledge of where the animals have come from and how they are reared. We make our own pies/ pasties and a wide range of sausages on the premises so everything is fresh and homemade and we can supply any cut of meat the customer requires, not just what is on display.

What is the best part of running your business and working in Bishopston & Redland? I enjoy going to work, each day is different but I love it. We get a variety of customers, some old who used to shop in the old days and many new younger faces

News A BISHOPSTON woman, who runs an independent business on Cotham Hill, has been awarded the Venus Entrepreneur of the Year for Bristol and Somerset. Hemali Modha, owner of Amulet Boutique, started her business venture in 2007 when she set up her own website selling jewellery. As a single mother of two, she felt it was a good way to balance looking after the children whilst working. An opportunity then came up at Clifton Shopping Centre where she set up a stall selling her products. Hemali said: “I found I really enjoyed selling direct to the public, and meeting new people. From having a stall at the shopping centre, I built up a really good customer base. Although it was brilliant there, it was really hard work, and the winters were really cold. “I thought, ‘do I go back to my web design or open up my own shop?’. I noticed that there wasn’t many clothes shops in the

Award for boutique boss Cotham Hill area, and I knew if I didn’t go ahead and set up my own place, I’d regret it.” In 2011, Hemali took over the lease of a small shop on Cotham Hill, and set up Amulet Boutique, selling bags, scarves, jewellery and clothes. She then moved her business to a larger premises which became available on the same street a year later. The Venus Awards, held at the end of March, celebrates women in business, and recognises those who have strived and grasped opportunities. Hemali said: “I didn’t know anything about the awards until someone came into the shop, and said I should apply. “I just filled out the one category, Entrepreneur of the Year, and I was shortlisted for the final eight. I was then interviewed by the sponsor of the award, St Johns Chambers.

“It was fantastic to win the award, it’s such an accolade, and it was great to have someone recognise the work put into Amulet.” The boutique prides itself of selling British brands with an ethical ethos. The store, which has two other members of staff, also offers a

personal shopper service. Hemali said: “We like to help women re-discover themselves, and help them find clothes to suit their body shapes. “As we have quite a lot of repeat custom, we know our customers’ preferences - it’s such a great feeling finding the right thing for someone.”

Gum Disease — Keep a healthy mouth! with Dr Catherine Spalding

The only part of your body that doesn’t have a natural mechanism for shedding its surface is your mouth, making it the perfect hangout for bacteria! Some of the 600 species of bacteria in your mouth right now are clinging to your teeth. If this bacteria is not cleaned off, within 24-48hours it will turn into the pale yellow substance called plaque. Plaque creates acid which slowly eats away at your teeth and eventually it hardens into tartar, which you will then need professional treatment to remove. Gingivitis (gum disease) affects almost everyone, but the initial symptoms are so mild, that many people don’t realize there’s a problem. Gingivitis is an oral infection, characterized by tender, swollen gums that bleed easily and have begun to recede from your teeth. In addition, it makes your breath smell.

To cure gingivitis you have to get rid of the plaque. This can be achieved by correct, thorough tooth brushing, for two minutes, in the morning and at night, ideally with an electric toothbrush together with flossing. After brushing and flossing, rinse your mouth with an antibacterial

mouthwash which helps destroy the harmful bacteria. For further advice on how to maintain a healthy mouth, contact Beau Monde Dental Care on 0117 330 3495. Dr Nicola White Partner, Beau Monde Dental Care

There’s so much information available about which patterns are flattering and which aren’t; which patterns are going to make you look bigger or look smaller – often it’s contradictory so it’s no wonder women shy away from them and stay well within their comfort zone. Who wants to wear a floral dress that, unbeknownst to them, is going to make them look two sizes larger, or a top that is going to make an ample bosom look even bigger? So this month I’m going to set the pattern record straight and demystify “how to wear pattern”. Smaller patterns are more flattering if you are larger - they help to disguise lumps and bumps and can instantly help you to lose inches. Larger patterns are great if you are very slim as they will add shape to your frame. If you are heavier in your lower body, avoid printed trousers as they will add pounds. Instead, wear an amazing printed top with plain trousers or skirt to keep the attention focussed on your upper body. If you have shapeless skinny legs, patterned trousers will be your best friend making your pins instantly look shapely. You can’t beat a classic Breton stripe but just be aware of where the stripes are hitting you. Wherever you feel self conscious go for a slimmer stripe. A wide stripe over a rounded tummy area will only emphasise it. Dresses with patterns down the

middle and plain panelling at the sides are going to make you look smaller as the eye focuses only on the pattern. Vertical stripes can make you look taller and slimmer as they elongate the body. A pair of pinstriped trousers will instantly make your legs look longer. If they’re higher waisted you’ll look like Elle Mcpherson! Now that you’ve picked up a few tips I hope you’ll feel more inspired to try out pattern for yourself this summer. Sell or Let with ease without feeling the squeeze

Online property advertising for landlords and vendors.

Sell for £299 inc VAT! Let for £119 inc VAT! We admit it, we’re new. Other agents may tell you that this explains our ‘madness’ in offering the lowest set fees when you sell or let your property. But we just think it’s fair. After all, why should you pay thousands in commission just for getting the best price you can for your property, when the agent doesn’t have to do any more work to earn it. So here’s the deal: Whatever the size or price of your house or flat, sell it with UrPad Online for a set fee of just £299 inc VAT, or let it for a set fee of just £119 inc VAT. And, although UrPad Online is a new company, the directors have actually got over 30 years’ experience in property, so we know just how it all works. To save on costs and help keep our fees so amazingly low, after our initial visit you can upload whatever property details and photos you like, giving you total control. And just think what you’ll save if you’ve got more than one property to sell or let! Once on our site, you’ll also automatically be listed on all the major property portals (Zoopla, Prime Location etc) so that your property moves fast. Plus, of course, our two high street offices in Bristol will also be working their socks off on your behalf. And just to keep other agents thinking we’re completely barking, we’ll offer you a 100% no quibble, money back guarantee! How’s that for a win-win offer.

Part of the Neighbourhood policing teams remit is to engage with children and young people and encourage a good relationship. I recently went on a community walk with students from the City of Bristol College who were on the Prince’s Trust course. Part of the course involves looking around the local area for good and not so good aspects. I had the job of helping the group identify the good, which was by far the more pleasant task. The Brunel field’s school, the new facilities at the cricket ground and the allotment and green space close to Dirac Road were some of the things that were chosen. Local voluntary work to clean up a lane on Muller Avenue were also seen as a positive aspect as this has had a benefit in relation to crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. The speed reduction on Ashley Down Road was also welcomed. It was interesting to hear the young people’s views on speed, as students are often seen as the worst offenders.

Green spaces The warmer weather has seen a slight increase

in calls regarding anti-social behaviour in the parks and green spaces on the beat. We have changed our patrol plan to reflect this. It’s a case of balancing out lots of park user’s interest. One person’s loud noise can be another’s music and entertainment. Sometimes we simply do not have the power to stop people behaving in a certain way. It’s great to see the new play equipment on Horfield Common. When I first started on the beat a fair few years ago now, we used to have an issue with underage drinkers on the common. However we now rarely get calls relating to this.

News from the local policing team with PCSO David Said

The beat team are often called into supported living accommodation in the area to mediate between residents and support staff. We recently helped resolve an in-house argument that had spilled over into mild violence. It can be a very difficult balancing act between not wanting to criminalise vulnerable people and taking firm action when it is needed. Many officers have been given additional training in mental health awareness, so we can provide the best support we can.

Have a safe July.

Run for the Future returns MEN taking part in Bristol’s annual 5k run for prostate cancer can take advantage of a free screening on the day. Event sponsor of Run for the Future, Spire The Glen Hospital Bristol, will have nurses on hand to offer Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests to detect early signs of prostate cancer. Now in its ninth year, the event organised by Bristol Rotary Club - is taking place on September 14 on Durham Downs, with the run starting at midday. Last year over 500 runners took part and more than 60 people were screened for prostate cancer. Raj Persad, consultant urologist at Spire Bristol, said: “The PSA blood test is the only diagnostic test available to check for prostate cancer at the moment. “We’re encouraging men in and around Bristol to sign up for Run for the Future to raise some much needed funds and spread the word that testing is simple and easy.” Profits from the race go to the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal for research and patient care in Bristol. Ian Beattie, event co-ordinator from the Bristol Rotary Club said: “It is a sad fact that more than 40,000 UK men are diagnosed every year with prostate cancer and over

10,000 of those do not survive. Since the first event in 2006, organisers have raised over £250,000 which has helped to finance Bristol-based research. Register or donate on www.

runforthefuture.org. Registration is £15 adult, £8 children under 16 and free for under 5s. The PSA tests are free to runners and spectators.

Howzat for a dream location? LINDEN Homes’ latest development has received the seal of approval from former Gloucestershire County Cricket Club captain David Graveney. David and his wife, Julie, were so impressed by the Living @ The Bristol County Ground that they have purchased a two-bedroom apartment with a pitch-side view. The scheme of 147 one- and two-bedroom apartments forms part of the cricket club redevelopment in Bishopston, Bristol. The Graveneys have opted for an apartment in the Graveney block, which is named after David's uncle Tom Graveney, who was an England Test and Gloucestershire cricket star in the 1950s and 60s. David Graveney, who was also chairman of the England Test selectors, said: "This redevelopment scheme is very impressive and I am very pleased that it will enable the

ground to become a world-class facility able to host international events." To find out more about Living @ The Bristol County Ground, where prices start at £165,000 for a one-bedroom apartment, call 0844 488 3698 or visit www. lindenhomes.co.uk/living

How a healthy glow could lead to true love DRIPPING with sweat might not be the most glamorous look when meeting a potential partner. But for a Gloucester Road fitness centre and café, speed dating whilst working out is the solution for creating long-lasting love. Bubalu is hoping to prove that there is truth behind the saying "those that train together, stay together" with a new "Single Sweaty Sundays" session. Ten men and 10 women meet at 11.30am in the café in

their training gear. They then go through to the studio for 45 minutes of cardio kickboxing. Men and women will train with and against each other in fun activities, so everyone can relax, work at their own pace, and mix. After a cool down stretch, everyone will return to the café for a selection of healthy, tasty wraps, fresh fruit juices and smoothies. At 12.45pm, the session will come to an end, allowing people

to continue getting to know one another. According to Mike Bowen, owner of Bubalu, people often generally feel more relaxed on a Sunday. Plus exercise releases happy, feel good endorphins, relaxes and revitalises people, enables people to share the same experiences, and builds confidence. If this is of interest, email bristol@bubalu.co.uk for a registration form.
