News Greens grab two more council seats THE Green party has come out on top in the recent local elections for both Bishopston

and Redland - taking the seats previously occupied by Liberal Democrat councillors.

Martin Fodor

Tim Malnick will now be standing alongside Daniella Radice, making Bishopston an entirely Green ward, and Martin Fodor will be standing alongside Liberal Democrat councillor, Fi Hance, in Redland. The pair will be replacing David Willingham and Sylvia Townsend, who both stepped down. Tim Malnick - an educator and facilitator helping organisations become more sustainable and socially responsible - achieved just under half of the voter turn-out with 2246 votes. Eileen Means, Labour candidate, came second with 1168 votes; Lib Dem, Barry Cash, came third with 757 votes; Conservative, Owen Evans, came fourth with 511; and Martin Saddington from Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts achieved 65 votes. Just over 46% of the

electorate voted, with a 4776 voter turn-out - 12% higher than the voter turn-out last year. Martin Fodor - an environmental consultant to local community groups and small traders, and national policy expert - gained 1465 votes, 36% of the voter turn-out. Lib Dem, Alex Smethurst, came second with 709 votes; Labour candidate, Philip Jardine came a close third with 689; Christopher Morton, Conservative candidate, came fourth with 661 votes; Stella Perrett, an Independent came fifth with 327 votes; UKIP candidate Christine WyndhamThomas came sixth with 171 votes; and Laura Collins from Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts received 26 votes. The overall turnout across Bristol was 36.5%. Tim Malnick said: “I’m delighted to have been elected as Bishopston councillor and I’m

News looking forward to working hard for the area. “The first priority of any councillor is to really listen to and represent the wishes of people in the ward. Transport and looking after Gloucester Road were key issues for many people. Making sure that residents’ parking, if it

does come to Bishopston, is implemented sensitively and with proper consultation, is another key issue. He added: “I’d like to foster more opportunities for outdoor play and activity, find new ways to help people develop their own ideas and local projects, and to develop neighbourhood sharing schemes as a way of lowering consumption, reducing waste, and also getting to know our neighbours better. “There is considerable cynicism about politics. Many people don’t feel connected, or have any confidence that politics is really serving them. I want to develop honest and trusting relationships with fellow councillors in all parties down at City Hall and I’d like to cut through some of the party political point scoring that seems to get in the way of a more intelligent human approach.” Martin Fodor said: “This is a tremendous result and an overwhelming majority we’re

really delighted with - more than twice the vote of the second place, on a much higher turnout. “I was so pleased with the support right across the ward for the campaign I ran and endorsement of our Green policies for Bristol. I am delighted that people have backed our positive messages for the area.

3

“My aim is to work with residents to involve more people in shaping decisions that affect our ward. So many people helped the campaign and I’m touched by the countless messages I’ve had since I was elected, and offers of help and support in future.”

DREARY weather did not dampen the spirits of those celebrating the opening of Horfield Common’s highly anticipated playground, which has come to fruition after eight years of campaigning. The children’s playground development, which cost £82k, was commissioned by Bristol City Council. The money came from the council’s capital stimulus to improve parks and green spaces throughout the city. In response to recent consultation, voters - including toddlers groups, schools and local residents - chose the Sutcliffe design out of five proposed plans. The play area includes a climbing wall, slides and swings for both children and young teens, as well as other necessities such as seating and litter bins. Locals gathered at the launch of the new play area on May 24 to watch founding members of Friends of Horfield Common - Pat Gardiner and Kay Thomson - cut the ribbon. Chair of FOHC, Sam Thomson, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that this day has finally arrived as it’s been a very lengthy process, with a lot of time and energy spent. “This play area is a testament to what local people can achieve. It’s massively important to the area and we’re hopeful that this will be the start of many new memories. It’s going to be wonderful to see people finally enjoying it.” Redeveloping the play area was one of the reasons why FOHC was established in 2006. The group’s next objective is to secure the future of the common’s much-loved venue, the Ardagh.

Memorial battle will continue THE campaigner who applied to get Rovers’ Memorial Stadium listed as an English Heritage site, is not giving up the fight. The application, which was made by Bishopston resident Jamie Carstairs in March, was rejected by English Heritage. Approval of the application could have stopped Sainsbury’s building on the ground. Rovers needs to sell the Horfield stadium to the supermarket chain in order to fund a move to a new £40 million stadium in Frenchay. The decision is now being reviewed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Mr Carstairs said: “It is disappointing that English Heritage have now declined to designate the war memorial sports ground. “On their website it states that they are “on a mission to list up to 500 war memorials a year over the First World War centenary period 2014-2018” - why not list Bristol’s best? “The Memorial Ground

was intended to be ‘a source of inspiration to generations of young Bristolians’. It has been, and still is, an inspirational war memorial sports ground – and, with due care, could continue to be.” He added: “The inscription on the entrance to the Memorial Ground is clear - it says: ‘THIS GROUND IS A MEMORIAL’. A Sainsbury’s superstore and a huge car park are unsuitable memorials. “The Rovers Sainsbury’s plan represents a failure of imagination. Bristol is a great city with a great past and with many interesting and sometimes

under-cherished buildings and social spaces. “As the country commemorates the centenary years of the Great War it is shameful that Bristol is about to destroy a very special war memorial.” The application was rejected on the grounds that it did not meet the criteria for listing. English Heritage stated that the original stand and structures, built in 1921, have been lost and that the 1980s replacements lack architectural interest. The assessor also asserted that its historic interest is local, not national.

The application to list the building as an English Heritage site came shortly after a judge ruled out TRASHorfield’s objection to Sainsbury’s plans. The campaign group believed that the council acted unlawfully in granting planning permission for the supermarket. Sainsbury’s plans include a memorial area around the entrance gates, as well as housing, green open space and over 150 car parking spaces. According to Rovers’ chairman, Nick Higgs, the development has received the approval and support of the former rugby club and British Legion. A statement from the club said: “The club is very pleased to hear that National Heritage will not be listing the whole Memorial Stadium site as a war memorial. We can now move forward finalising our agreements with our partners.” The clubs hopes to start developments on the new 21,700-seater stadium this summer.

Lumps and bumps . . . As animals grow we can sometimes find that they start to develop small lumps and bumps which can be a frightening discovery. We call them masses and no matter how big or small it is really important to get them checked. Majority of the time they are nothing to be concerned about and may just require observation. Most common types? Lipoma is an accumulation of fat cells just below the skin or buried in muscles. They tend to start small but can grow. They are non painful do not tend to cause any problems. Warts appear anywhere on the body and do not need removal. They can dry and harden or bleed if knocked. Two other types of mass can look like a wart, a histiocytoma, common in younger animals and benign, and the mast cell tumour, an aggressive malignant growth that requires removal. Sebaceous Cyst is blocked glands up to 1.5cm diameter in the thickness of the skin. The fluid in these lumps can be thick or clear fluid and can rupture/ burst. Occasionally they become infected and need removal, or can turn into a Sebaceous Adenoma. Haematoma is an accumulation of blood under the skin after trauma/rupture of a blood vessel which we need to surgically intervene. If we simply drain the haematoma it will probably reoccur so we also place lots of sutures to ensure it does not refill. Abscesses are pus under the skin following an infection. The body’s natural defense is to fight off the bacteria by sending lots of white blood cells

to the area and then an abscess forms. These tend to burst but sometimes need a little help by making a small nick in the skin to release the trapped infection. The animal is then sent home with antibiotics. Mammary Masses usually appear on unneutered females in the mammary tissue along the abdomen. More common in bitches than female cats these masses should be taken a little more seriously. They can be benign or malignant. Half the dogs with these masses will have the benign type of Adenoma. The other half, tend to be a type of malignant Carcinoma. These masses should be removed surgically as there is a chance of them spreading or enlarging. To determine if a mass is a possible Tumour we perform a Fine Needle Aspirate which enables us a diagnosis of whether we need to consider removal of a mass. We insert a needle into the mass and suck out cells, they are then analysed on a microscope slide and sent to a laboratory to be examined by a pathologist. We may need to take a biopsy of the mass, which would need to be carried out under general anaesthetic. The sample is also sent to the laboratory for examination.

Fairfield High has so much potential, say campaigners PARENT campaigners, who were dissatisfied with the secondary education available in the area, have dropped their lobby for a new free school. The 'Next Step Horfield' group was set up at the beginning of the year to campaign for better secondary school provisions close to Horfield Common. However, after visiting Fairfield High School, they were impressed by their vision for the future and how much the school had improved. The campaigners have now made the decision to support the school, urging other local parents to join them. A spokesperson from the group said: "Fairfield has so much potential - and capacity - and is keen to work with local parents to help improve the school further. We want Fairfield to become a viable, positive option for local parents. "The management team were also open to listening to - and working with - local parents to further improve the school and be a part of the community. Fairfield has great facilities, outstanding teaching, capacity and room to expand. They added: "Quality of teaching and available places were of great concern to the parents who took part in our survey - and Fairfield High has both. So we feel the best way to create positive change is by working with Fairfield as a local school, rather than trying to start again with a free school." An online survey was carried out by the group, which asked over 600 people their thoughts on existing provisions and floated the idea of lobbying for a new secondary free school. The survey revealed that 73% would like to send their children to a local school, but were either unhappy with the local provision, or believed that the child will not get a place in their preferred school. The group worked alongside Fairfield to arrange an open forum, held in March, where parents asked questions to a panel of both teachers and pupils about the school. According to the group, many parents said they were relieved to find a local school that they could send their child to with confidence. Fifty-one people attended the open evening.

The Lynne Fernandes promise Styling eye wear is surprisingly complex. People have different sized heads, different positioning of their ears and their nose. We also consider face shapes. Different face shapes suit specific frame designs. Our individual preference for a style or look, which may vary at work compared to home, or sport must also be taken into account. Our Optometrists will focus on how well you see: a high short sighted prescription may have traumatised someone of my generation (40 something!) when we were prescribed our first NHS glasses in the 80s. We may think glasses that are as discrete as possible to be the only way. This can lead us to make what we think are safe decisions about our frame choice which leaves us thinking that our new glasses are OK. We want to campaign against you accepting “OK” glasses! We think you should only wear gorgeous glasses that wow.

If you pair this with free standard lenses via Lens Club, what more reason could you have for visiting us? Actually I can give you another reason. We’ve just launched the graphite green transitions, lens. Pair this with a frame from this summer’s William Morris collection for a new iconic look or with a Ray-Ban for a classic style.

News ONE Redland resident is about to embark on a 2,400 mile rowing trip across the Pacific Ocean - along with three other women - in an attempt to become the first all-female crew to row the distance, unsupported. Ingrid Kvale has joined forces with Amanda Challans - who is also from Bristol - Emily Blagden and Aoife Ni Mhaoileoin to become 'Team Boatylicious'. The women will be leaving Monterey Bay in California on June 7, and arriving in Honolulu, Hawaii 40-45 days later. They hope to raise ÂŁ40,000 for three charities - Hope and Homes for Children, WaterAid and The Ahoy Centre. Team Boatylicious will be one of 13 crews taking part in the Great Pacific Race, which organisers have described as the "biggest, baddest human endurance challenge on the planet". Only five people have ever rowed this route. The crew will be carrying all of their own equipment and food aboard their 24-foot boat, the

Redland resident embarks on 2,400 mile rowing trip 'Black Oyster'. They have also been provided with a special filter which turns sea water into fresh drinking water. There are two rowing positions with a small cabin in both the stern and bow for shelter and storage. The women will be sticking to a rigorous rowing schedule of two hours on, two hours off for 24-hours a day. A weather router man, based in the Isle of Wight, will be directing Team Boatylicious to avoid bad weather. Ingrid said: "From the moment we step off land the boat will be our life support, carrying us, our food and equipment for the duration of the race. "It's going to be very gruelling and painful - 2,400 miles is a long way to travel in open ocean. "There are quite few risks we need to watch out for large

ships, sharks and it's also the early stages of hurricane season. There's also the risk of heat stroke and dehydration." She added: "But I'm looking forward to it, it's going to be a challenge - and I can't wait to see the sea creatures in their natural surroundings." Ingrid, who studied zoology at university and is a wildlife film producer, will be filming the journey. The 44-year-old has been on a high protein diet in the buildup to the race, training six days a week, and doing yoga once a week. Ingrid joined the team three months ago when a place on the boat became available. She started rowing four years ago. "I've always been quite adventurous and I'm always wanting to make the most of life;

seizing the moment, and doing things while I've still got the chance." Last year she attempted to row around Britain in a mixed team, but due an electrical problem and a team member dropping out, she was unable to complete the race. Education NEW buildings for a primary school off Cheltenham Road have been given the go-ahead despite residents' concerns about traffic problems. The £6m development of The Dolphin School on the Fowler's Engineering site in Bath Buildings was approved by city councillors last month. The decision will mean work can begin as soon as a legal agreement on road and pedestrian safety measures has been signed. Colston's Girls' School Trust, which runs the school, said it would be working with planning and highways officers to resolve final details as soon as possible. People living in the area have expressed concerns about traffic flows as a result of the Dolphin's expansion but the trust says most children live close by and will be encouraged to travel to school on foot, scooter or bike. Bristol's South and East Development Control Committee (Planning) resolved to grant planning permission for a 420-place primary school, subject to a legal agreement being signed.

bishopstonvoice

www.bishopstonvoice.co.uk

June, 2014

It’s yes to new Dolphin School Erica Draisey, of CGS Trust, said after the committee meeting: “Naturally we are delighted with the outcome, as this decision should enable us to build a sustainable and innovative primary school in the heart of the city. Our priority now is to sign up to the legal agreement. "Thereafter we intend to consult further with the local community over the provisions and management aims of the School Travel Plan, whose intention will be to introduce a range of measures to encourage pupils and their parents to walk, scooter or cycle to Dolphin School." The Dolphin School opened in 2012 alongside Colston's Girls' School and has 90 pupils. Some councillors and local people have criticised its catchment area, which was drawn up to meet the demand for places identified by the council at the time. The trust is revising its admissions policy in 2015 to take

account of changing needs. The Area of First Priority has been extended south of the school and the most northern extremity has been removed. Mrs Draisey, who is executive principal of CGS, the Dolphin and Kingfisher schools, said 80 per cent of the children at the Dolphin live within a mile of the proposed new building. Forty-two per are from an ethnic minority background, making it an inclusive local school. Partnerships have been forged with the local business community and the neighbouring health centre. CGST has also been selected to sponsor another primary school in Fairlawn Road in the former Fairfield Grammar School. The plans for the school include play areas and spaces for outdoor learning on the roof of the school, as well as a central

courtyard playground. Children will enjoy woodland walks and will share the grass pitches and multi-use games area at the secondary school site. The proposed buildings, three storeys high in places, are brick at the lower level and rendered above, and their design has strong green credentials. The trust says that it has adapted its plans for the development after listening to the concerns of neighbours and parents.

Sauce is a success A SAUCE that adds flavour to everything from fish and chips to pizza and salad is proving a success for a group of Bristol teenagers whose families come from all over the world. The students at Fairfield High School came up with the recipe for their Amaliso chutney after testing it among young people and staff at the school in Horfield, where 70 nationalities are represented. They worked with their school cook to develop the Somali Shidni sauce, creating four flavours, original (tamarind), carrot, coconut and dates. The team of nine - Arafa Moaw, Hiwaaq Dahir, Abdinajib Ahmed, Vanessa James, Maria Ahmed, Samia Osman, Tyreke Angus, Fatima El Elmi and Kawsar Omar - aged 14 and 15, then tried out samples at an event in Cabot Circus, where more than 200 shoppers tasted the product. Teacher Charmaine Clarke said their research showed that the sauce would fill a gap in the market. The students, from countries including Sweden, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Kenya, Holland, Ethiopia, Norway and Somalia, decided on the name Amaliso as an anagram of Somalia. They are now in talks with manufacturers about production of the sauce. Their efforts have earned them a place representing the West of England in the South West regional finals of the national Young Enterprise competition this month. If they succeed they will go through to the UK final in London in July.

GREAT fun was had at the Eat Well Festival where hundreds of people battled the wind and rain to join Orchard School Bristol for a celebration of food in the community. Festival-goers were treated to food demonstrations from students at UWE, BAM, the school’s caterers and Maniks, a local restaurant. There was a range of stalls from Upper Horfield Community Garden, The Chilly Man and Brandon Trust to name a few. The festival was part of the Staying Alive project involving all of the schools within the With One Voice Partnership to promote activities that create health and happiness. With One Voice Partnership and Filton Working Together took over the Community Centre, Filton Leisure Centre, St Andrew’s Youth Centre and facilities on Elm Park to bring a festival of sport to the area. The Get Active event was aimed to help the community find out about sports on offer in the area and giving people the opportunity to have a go. Local clubs showcased their sports facilities and offered taster sessions.

News FAMILY of the Gloucester Road butcher, Dave Giles, have come together to raise an astounding £1,700 by running the Bristol 10k in his memory. The money will be going towards a charity in The Gambia - a country that had a profound effect on Dave after his initial visit last year. The much-loved butcher sadly passed away whilst on a returning holiday there in February after suffering from a heart attack. The chosen charity, The Gambia Experience, supports the education and learning of children through school development projects. Dave's daughter, Amy Osborne, said: "For all of us the Bristol 10k was a personal challenge. Some had personal bests to beat and others hadn't ran a 10k before - it was about completing it that mattered. "It wasn't the ideal running conditions, it was cold, very windy and rainy. Caring pupils help others tackle poverty CHILDREN from Sefton Park School have raised an astounding £2410 to help entrepreneurs in the developing world set up businesses and get themselves out of poverty. Pupils raised the money as part of the Deki Tenner Tournament - a competition where teams are given £10 each, with four weeks to turn the loan into as much money as possible through setting up small enterprises, such as a bake sale. The money raised by the children has gone towards helping 37 entrepreneurs across the world, including a banana seller, and a goat farmer. Once the entrepreneurs have set up their businesses and are able to pay back the money they have borrowed, it will then be leant back out to other entrepreneurs. Deki, a micro-finance charity based in Stokes Croft, was set

A WINE producer from Bishopston is celebrating after winning ‘best local wine’ at the Bristol Good Food Awards. Ingrid Bates, founder of Dunleavy - a Pinot Noir rose - launched her first batch last year, which sold out in just three days. She has just celebrated the release of her 2013 vintage. Ingrid planted the vineyard, located in Wrington Vale, in 2008 weeks before the birth of her first child. “After several years of planning and hard work setting up the vineyard, it’s great to start receiving recognition for our wine,” she said. “This is the first award we’ve won - and with all the positive feedback we’re getting I hope it’ll be the first of many.” Ingrid began her viticultural career ten years ago when she took up a job maintaining a vineyard at Thornbury Castle just outside Bristol. The wine is now available in three outlets; Grape & Grind in Gloucester Road, Lye Cross Farm Shop near Wrington and The Wine Shop in Winscombe. The charity has helped out entrepreneurs in Malawi, Togo, Ghana, Nepal and South Sudan. Charity organisers say that Sefton Park raised more money than any other school that has taken part in the tournament. Over 140 children at the school - aged 7-10 - took part in the tournament. The winning team, including Martha Conchie, Amelia Spooner, Mae Lewis, Evie Miller and Emilia Fear, raised £262 by making cakes, Easter cards and badges, among other items their prize was tickets to GoApe. The teams which came second and third raised £201.43 and £200 respectively. Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, attended the

More thought needed before RPZs come in I don’t want to mislead people with limited information. So I’d like to add to a letter I wrote in the May 2014 issue. I suggested about a third of residential roads risked double yellows on one side in any future lower Horfield, Bishopston and Ashley Down Residents’ Parking Zones. This suggestion was based on comments from two people in the RPZ team. One suggested it was very likely double yellows would be proposed on one side

bishopstonvoice

for narrow roads, the other that double yellows were likely for at least some roads with narrower pavements. Since writing the letter I have viewed the Montpelier proposals. Montpelier also has a lot of narrow roads. Double yellows down long stretches of residential roads, without driveways, have most been avoided. However, there are substantial double yellows beyond just double yellows on corners. These include a few double yellows down long stretches of residential roads. Even if there is a reduction in two care owning households, it seems parking could be tougher. It seems reasonable to presume similar criteria will be applied to Bishopston, lower Horfield and Ashley Down. Since my previous letter I have also learnt more regarding schools, businesses and RPZs. Schools are allowed to buy up to seven parking permits for a three figure sum per permit, as well the two free ones some schools are given. For schools which are two form entry or bigger, without car parks, this still seems a challenging number. People are

now leaving schools in Bristol RPZs because of the problems created by the scheme. So all in all, whilst I still sympathise with the principle of RPZs, I still have major concerns with the dogmatic way they seem to be implemented. Finally, another look at Google maps, may suggest my estimation of a third of streets fitting the RPZ’s definition of narrow may be more like a quarter. As a layman, I have not got time to do exact measurements though! I hope those in public life will be able to give that kind of detail as the controversial RPZs policy continues. DW Have you got strong views about what's happening in Bishopston and Redland? A BISHOPSTON woman is amongst the 40 people voted as making a major contribution to Bristol. Jenny Foster, Bristol’s Fairtrade coordinator, now has her photo on display at the M Shed museum as part of the ‘You Make Bristol’ exhibition which launched on May 9. Sixty communities across Bristol nominated people for the display and made the final selection of 40 individuals or groups. The exhibition celebrates the contributions of Bristol citizens, past and present, to the character and status of the city at home and abroad. Jenny’s photo is accompanied by a caption written by Roger James, regional Oxfam manager. He wrote: “Jenny is an inspiration and a beacon for Fairtrade in Bristol and the region. Her leadership and skills have built partnerships across the community, businesses and media. “She pioneered the influential Fairtrade Business Awards, Ethical Finance Conferences and the world’s largest Fairtrade fashion shows. Why pioneer Jenny is top banana a leading Fairtrade city with an ethical beating heart, hosting the International Fair Trade Conference in 2015.” Jenny says that she was “overwhelmed” to be selected alongside other renowned and illustrious people. “I’m delighted and proud that Fairtrade is regarded so highly by the people of Bristol. It was an incredible thing to be voted in the top 40 - and when I received the email I had to keep reading it over and over again. “I really do love Bristol and it’s fabulous to know that people feel I’ve made a good contribution to the city. “The fact that the voting was also community-led makes it even more of an honour.” Jenny, 47, became a part of the Fairtrade movement 20 years ago. She says that it was always something she had been very interested in. Her involvement in Fairtrade began when she set up a Fairtrade cafe - Cafe Unlimited - on Gloucester Road. Through that, Jenny got involved in the Bristol Fairtrade Network.

When a vacancy for Bristol’s Fairtrade coordinator became available, Jenny couldn’t decline. “I believe that Fairtrade is an antidote to the slave trade,” says Jenny. “So much money was generated for the city during the slave trade - it’s great that Bristol is now at the other end of the spectrum, and has been redefined as a fair and ethical place to live and work.” Jenny is now working alongside organisers of the Bristol Green Capital in the build up to next year. “I think it’s so important to get the message out there about maintaining a sustainable lifestyle. Fairtrade is such a positive thing, and it’s vital that we’re being conscious about the things we are purchasing.” Jenny, a Bishopston resident of 15 years, says that her dream is to see Gloucester Road completely Fairtrade. “It’ll be great to walk up and

down the street one day and see the Fairtrade Mark in all of the windows.” Other Bristolians featured include the world-famous street artist Banksy, Victorian engineering genius Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Michael Dillon, physician and transgender

pioneer, Gareth Chilcott Bath and England rugby prop, Roy Hackett who helped lead the Bristol Bus Company boycott and founded St Pauls Carnival, Ernest Bevan, the Labour minister, as well as the Aardman animation team, renowned for their much-beloved Wallace and Gromit films.

Get your teeth into important messages

Green is the colour for us COMMUNITY groups, traders and local gardeners will be adding a splash of green to the pavements on Glos Rd Central as part of Big Green Week. Planters, made out of recycled objects, will be placed along the street, with Room 212 planning a pop-up garden outside the shop. Room 212's theme for this month is also (Re)Cycle to tie in with the city-wide event, which runs from June 14-22. The gallery, which showcases work by over 100 local artists, will be putting on an exhibition of art, craft and gifts based on cycling and recycling. Work by Room 212's featured artist, Jenny Urquhart, who creates vibrant paintings and prints of Bristol, often with bikes and recycled buttons, will be on display. It’s National smile month, so what better time to launch our monthly dental column. We hope that the information and top tips we discuss here will help you and your family care for your teeth so that they will last a lifetime. Poor oral health does not just cause problems inside the mouth - a smile is hugely important to our personalities and selfconfidence. General health is also at risk as studies continue to associate poor oral health with other health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children, affecting over 25% of five year olds in the UK. Almost one in four adults still do not brush their teeth twice a

day. The three key messages here are; 1. Brush for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. 2. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks. 3. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. Here at Beau Monde we firmly believe that prevention is better than cure and is undoubtedly the key to healthy teeth. If you would like us to check on your oral health, please call us on 0117 330 3495. We look forward to seeing you soon. Dr Catherine Spalding Partner, Beau Monde Dental Care

News Fish bar’s batter than all the rest ANOTHER accolade has just been added to a local chippy’s list of achievements. The Bishopston Fish Bar - opposite the Nevil Road junction on Gloucester Road was recently voted as one of the 50 best fish and chip shops in the UK by Fry Magazine. It was the only fish and chip shop in Bristol to make the list. Five-hundred shops entered into the competition, which is now in its second year, and according to organisers, the standard was set “exceedingly high”.

Linden Homes donate equipment CHILDREN at Ashley Down Primary School were thrilled to try out new playground equipment - donated by Linden Homes and construction firm, Galliford Try - when they returned for the summer term. The school is located next to Gloucestershire County Cricket Club where Galliford Try has constructed 147 one and two-bedroom apartments for Linden Homes as part of the ground’s redevelopment. James Hurford, commercial director at Linden Homes Western, said: “We are committed to supporting the communities around our developments and it’s been great to see the enthusiastic response to the new playground. We are pleased that our contribution will help the learning experience for all these children.”

Pictured from left Jon Young, project director, Galliford Try; James Hurford, commercial director at Linden Homes Western along with William and Nate, both from Ashley Down School’s Barracuda class

All of the shops listed in the top 50 achieved a 95 percent rating or above. Nick Lomvardos, owner of Bishopston Fish Bar, said: “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits - completely overwhelmed and very proud. “I want to thank my excellent staff, as I couldn’t have done it without them - I’ve been extremely lucky.” Over the past year, Bishopston Fish Bar has also come runner-up for the best fish and chip takeaway in the south and west of England, and also won an award for its “high quality food and service”. Nick added: “Although we’ve been winning these awards, we’re constantly trying to better ourselves and improve our service. “We’re now putting our fish and chips in paper bags, instead of plastic, we’ve introduced bespoke uniforms, and have put in a new line for credit card payments - all of which have been feedback from entering into these competitions.” This year, Nick and his team are putting themselves forward again for Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2015, in hope of winning the region.

Feel the warmth

M

any homeowners install log burners in their homes for various reasons. Some want to save money and some are just attracted to the smell of a real fire. There is also a growing awareness amongst people of the environmental issues and the impact that we make by burning fossil fuels. A well chosen log burner will bring warmth year after year with added benefit to the environment. It is important to take proper care of your log burner if you want it to work efficiently and be safe to use. Always contact a professional installer who can carry out the maintenance. The chimney will require cleaning once or twice a year, this will help prevent soot build up. If there are gaps, then there may be smoke leaking into the house making the chimney unsuitable for use. Smoke pellets can be used to check for leaks. For the best performance the log burner doors should be airtight. The glass is specially built to withstand the heat of burning wood and does not get damaged easily. However, over a period of use, they may show signs of wear and tear. But most of all enjoy your log burner.

ow the wedding season is in full swing, my thoughts have turned to matrimonial interior decor. Many brides like to feel every aspect of the day is bespoke, uniquely personal and reflective of their character. It can be hard to achieve this when hiring a large venue and stock tables and chairs, with sometimes limited choice of different coloured covers. As wedding costs and expectations have soared, so budgets have shrunk, increasing the popularity of home-made, hand-finished touches like bunting, and vintage crockery. The dining tables form an important part of the mise-en-scene, visually and spatially dominating the room, and later becoming the backdrop to the speeches. It is well worth investing a little effort into creating a beautiful tablescape.

June, 2014

Aesthetically pleasing and an aid to starting conversation between guests not already familiar with each other, a fun or quirky, attractive arrangement will help make the day more memorable. My out-there suggestion is to make your own nonChristmassy crackers, filled with hilarious anecdotes about The Happy Couple, streamers, confetti, bubbles, balloons, lottery scratch cards, moustaches whatever you like. Simply cut a strip of lovely wrapping or tissue paper large enough to wrap around a kitchen roll tube (cut into two), stick double sided tape along one ‘inside’ edge of the paper making sure you leave a gap in the centre to aid it breaking when pulled apart. Pop in a cracker snap (available from any craft shop or online) before tying one end closed with ribbon or twine, place the goodies

in the middle and tie up the other end. Of course you could do this for any other celebratory dinner occasion too! The tablescape in the picture is one I made on a shoestring especially for a hen weekend, hence the feminine and joyful palette. For a more formal do, reign in the colour selection to just one or two hues and perhaps a few pops of a contrasting accent colour.

The results from the Great Bird Watch seem to show a general wellbeing with the bird population as a whole. This news is quite reassuring, but in the garden there seems to be a lack of numbers. The birds are there but instead of flocks of tits and other small birds, we are seeing only a few of each. The blackbirds are present as two pairs and the ever-hungry pair of robins, but little else except two fat woodpigeons, which if they misbehave may finish up in a pie! I would not harm them but I do my best to dissuade them. According to my diary, April and May were quite pleasant months. Temperatures were decently high, and some lovely gardening days presented themselves. But what is uppermost in my mind is the blossom and colour we have seen from trees, shrubs and plants. The snowdrops in mid-February spread over the garden, blackthorn blossom in so many hedges. The daffodils came along with a lovely

show and then the trees started. The plum and damsons set their fruitlets, the magnolias in several gardens were quite superb, and then the pear trees had their turn. Crab apple is prominent now, and the Bramleys and eating apples are well under way. The cornus shows its brilliant coral-red stems, the cotinus its deep plum-coloured leaves, and very soon the hawthorn will be in flower. Can we ask for much more to start the summer? Do you have anything in the garden with great colour?

and moist and soon there will be some of those tiny green shoots. The grass is growing well and with this rain I found an opportunity to spread some grass feed, weed and moss killer. Sharpen up the look of the garden by trimming all the edges of the lawn – it makes such a difference.

Gardeners are never content with the weather. Earlier this year we complained that the ground was too wet. This was followed by a dry spell that gave us the chance to catch up with the digging but sadly it went on too long and the surface of the soil became reminiscent of concrete. Now, thankfully, the rain returned at the end of April and has helped the soil break up so a fine tilth can be achieved with the use of a rake. This moisture will encourage the weeds to germinate so keep an eye on the plot and don’t allow them to take over. There is no simple answer to clearing weeds, it’s just an essential chore best carried out when there is no risk of rain. I use a hoe but in some areas the only option is get down on your knees and pull them out by hand with the help of a fork. Don’t allow the weeds to flower and set seed as later on you will be plagued with more. The months of May and June are busy

bishopstonvoice

follow us on Twitter @bishopstonvoice

33

On the plot times for sowing seeds and as the soil has now warmed up then sowing outside should not be a problem. I have just sown sprouts, cabbage and purple sprouting and the seedlings have started to show. Thin these seedlings later on to get strong plants ready for transplanting. Continue to sow other vegetables to provide a succession of crops and late May or early June swedes can be sown. If you haven’t put up the runner bean canes then don’t delay. Space the canes about 12 inches apart and at least 15 inches between the rows. Alternatively if space is limited then construct your canes in a wigwam style. If you chose to sow your beans directly then early June or a better option is to sow them now in pots indoors as this will deliver an earlier crop. Wait until the seeds germinate into healthy plants before “hardening off” outside ahead of planting. Use the same approach for other tender plants such as courgettes, marrows, cucumbers, pumpkins and squash. The “hardening off” process is essential, as this

minimises the stress on the plant when suddenly planted in the open ground. Find a sheltered spot and allow at least a week for this by gradually exposing the plants to night-time temperatures. When ready for planting heed the advice on the seed packet regarding the spacing. Don’t try to squeeze in more plants as this will cause problems later on. I dig a hole with a trowel then add some compost before planting to give the plant the best start possible.

MUM Welcome to my Bishopston Voice column and a happy June to you all! I can’t believe how quickly this year is going. Since my son started primary school in September last year, time has seemed to have picked up speed. It won’t be long before September will return once more and it will be time to apply for a primary school place for my daughter too. My children had a great time at Mayfest on Gloucester Road and thoroughly enjoyed themselves decorating biscuits, flying paper aeroplanes and riding the bicycle carousel! The sunny weather coupled with a great atmosphere made for a great day and means of bringing the local community

together. After we had enjoyed the activities on offer, we bought some burgers from Dave Giles Butchers, soft fresh rolls from Joe’s Bakery and some beautifully flavoured smoked applewood cheese from my friend Sarah’s monthly Redhead’s Smokehouse stall outside St Michael’s Church and returned home for a Bishopston lunch through and through. Following last year’s successful wine launch, this last month my friend Ingrid Bates launched her 2014 Dunleavy vintage. Her latest wine is another Pinot Noir Rose with a tiny amount of Seyval Blanc blended in and is available in Grape & Grind on Gloucester Road. I can personally recommend it! This month I took my little girl along to Mr Benn’s Amazing Adventures; a new drop-in class for pre-school aged children held every Thursday at 10.30am at the Quaker Meeting House, Gloucester Road. It consists of 40 minutes of adventure, role play, singing, games and dancing and is great fun for kids and grown-ups alike. Parents of primary school children may be interested

to hear that from September, KudaCan will be launching a Breakfast Club to accompany KudaClub, their existing outof-school care facility. The Ofsted registered play café will be offering breakfast club on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when parents can drop kids off for a healthy breakfast before they are safely accompanied to Bishop Road and Ashley Down Schools. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Pegah on 0117 9422 877. I took my kids to Redland

Green Park recently and was glad I did so. The park has plenty of well-kept green space and an enclosed play park which younger children will especially enjoy. My kids particularly liked playing in the play park’s large sand pit. If you haven’t taken a trip there already, then I recommend you do so as you won’t be disappointed! I hope you have a wonderful June. Bishopston Mum www.bishopstonmum.com www.bristolmum.com

Our Neighbourhood

LAST month saw a whole host activities come to Bishopston and Redland as part of the 'Our Neighbourhood' community festival. The week kicked off with the Gloucester Road Central Mayfest on May 3, which involved biscuit decorating outside Joe's Bakery, live music, face painting, crownmaking, a visit from Jack in the Green, and plenty of other activities. The ever-popular Redland May Fair took place on the Bank Holiday Monday, where families gathered to enjoy over 100 stalls, live music, children's entertainment and more. 'Our Neighbourhood' festival then concluded with the Golden Hill Community Garden Spring Fair, and the Bishopston, Cotham and Redland 'Super Forum' on May 10. The Super Forum had guest speakers Kris Donaldson, the director of Bristol Green Capital 2015, and Stephen Williams MP. They spoke respectively about the area's involvement in Bristol Green Capital next year, and knowing our rights within our own communities. Surrounding these events were heritage mapping sessions, film screenings, Neighbourhood Watch meetings, and guided walks and cycle tours - to name a few.

THE Minis Theatre Club is a local group for children between the ages of 9 – 14, specializing in musical theatre. This summer they are proud to present: The Wizard of Oz. Made famous by the MGM film starring Judy Garland, the story is based on the books of L. Frank Baum who wrote them for his children. When Dorothy’s house is whisked away by a cyclone, she finds herself in the curious and magical land of Oz where she meets some memorable friends. Come and see the Good Witch of the North, along with the Munchkins, the Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion, as they bravely follow the yellow brick road to find the Wizard who will help them. With the Wicked Witch of the East out to stop them and reclaim the ruby slippers now worn by Dorothy, will she ever find her way home? Our talented Minis will perform all the well-known classics such as “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!” in a bright and colourful bonanza, which is sure to enthrall the whole family. Work ‘to restart soon’ THE managing director of Chatworth Homes - the developer behind the North Bristol Baths regeneration - says that the council has "blown matters out of proportion". The council announced at the end of January that they had concerns about the quality of work being done to the Gloucester Road development, which is to encompass a community health centre, pharmacy and hydrotherapy suite, alongside new housing and the Bishopston Library. Capita was appointed to review the work being done by Chatsworth Homes, which started in October 2012. But Kevin Batt, managing director of the developer, says that the 15-week delay has been a result of "internal politics" within the council. He said: "The timetable until the end of last year was going reasonably well, and the regular monthly reports submitted to the council on progress and costs were accepted without any adverse comment. "All of the work done up [until January] had been certified by both the project architect and the independent cost monitoring surveyor.

"Having recently received the project reports from Capita, we’re pleased that - as has always been our view - there are no concerns of a structural or major nature. "Although there have been some contractor co-ordination matters and one perceived safety issue, these are no more than one would reasonably expect in a project of this size and complexity. Mr Batt added: "Chatsworth Homes has therefore taken legal advice to ensure that the most appropriate action is taken and, as a result of which, discussions with council are now on-going with a view to bringing this project to completion. "In this regard, we can see no reason why Chatsworth Homes should not be back on-site very shortly." A council spokesman said: “We have to make sure that we get a high quality development and at the moment there are several concerns. We are very grateful for the patience of everyone affected and we will make sure that, one way or another, the project is completed to a high standard and as soon reasonably possible.”

An Eye for Detail I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to all things chunky and sparkly, especially if it’s in the shape of a cocktail ring or statement necklace. It’s a rare day that you’ll find me without wearing at least one piece of jewellery - I feel semi-naked otherwise! In my mind the more eye-catching the better but for the

majority of my clients knowing how to incorporate accessories into their every day outfit is something that falls by the wayside due to lack of confidence. Women often tell me that they love the look of them on other people but have no idea how to wear them themselves. On closer inspection of their wardrobes, hidden in the nooks and crannies, are pieces that have been bought in an attempt to try them out but have never seen the light of day. If this sounds like you then don’t worry, help is at hand. Accessories can instantly update an outfit turning it from drab to fab in seconds. They are brilliant at creating attention in all the right places which is key to successful and flattering styling. One of the things I love most about them is that they’re available in a huge variety of styles and on every budget so are a good way to stretch your wardrobe and your wallet, and they can be fun! Add a scarf in this seasons colours to instantly transform your look into one that is more current and up to date. If you’re bottom heavy this trick will help to draw attention to your upper body and will frame your face. If you’re having a ‘tummy’ day - add a scarf and it will disappear. If you would like a copy of my scarf tying video drop me a line: karen@karenl.co.uk. A statement necklace will highlight a good upper body and will draw attention away from any selfconscious areas lower down. Wear with this season’s camisole or over

the collar of a sleeveless chiffon blouse and ankle grazers. If you have a slim waist, wear an eye-catching belt to draw attention to it. Look for bright colours or interesting effects like snake skin or leopard print then wear your top slightly tucked in to show it off. A beautiful bracelet with interesting details will highlight slim wrists and lovely hands. If you’re style is quirky, try grouping some brooches together for a fun and unique look. My name is Alice Rolfe and I started to screen print when I was 7. A close friend was a silk screen printer. I did a short course with her, then continued on alone with small basic frames. What I loved about it was the contrast it had to drawing. The two work together really well, but offer something so different to the final image. During my fine art degrees I was interested in the layering of memories and how to represent that through art – although I’ve moved on from conceptual art, the ideas of layering has stuck with me. Printing two layers of colour on top of each other means you get a third colour, and what appears is always a surprise. Traditionally, screen printing is an accurate art, but I often move the screen just to see what happens. The final product however is a locked design, no room for error – people want to

making as much noise as possible. (As it happens, they were very, very good at this.) And then we were off, all 16 teams, with names such as Dangerous Doughnuts, the Monster Mashers and Word War III, strutting their stuff through four heats and giving an excellent account of themselves. In the end, Zombie Apocalypse from Whitehall School emerged as winners in a contest which saw the roof raised to a height of about five miles and the sky very definitely kissed, almost into oblivion. Best of all, the knowledge that 500 impressionable young minds - and hopefully a few older ones as well would be leaving with a rather different idea of poetry and the limits to which it will take you. pink and gold serenity of St George’s Bristol. Upon arrival, all was calm. Sound and light technicians were doing technical things with sound and light, and the four intrepid poets-turnedmentors who’d gone into four of Bristol’s primary schools to work with their Year 5 pupils in preparation for the day’s event were fine-tuning its organisation. Indeed, there was an almost palpable air of orderly productivity. Then the surface tension on the judges’ jug of water began to quiver as the auditorium filled with 500 pupils from Bishop Road, Ashton Gate, St Mary Redcliffe and Whitehall Primary Schools. There was just some time for a spot of last-minute coaching before the judging procedure was explained, our four mentors warmed up the audience, and the audience

Bristol Bootlegger Michala Miller (managing director), Gary Miller (director), Richard Naden (director) and Lee Miller (operations director).

Tell us about your company? Bristol Bootlegger is an independent, family-run cocktail bar and kitchen, established in April 2014. The Bootlegger is a bar for all times, a place without pretence. Our food, our drinks, cour service and our music are inspired by prohibition era traditions but also offer the very best of contemporary modern America.

What is the best part of running your business and working in Bishopston & Redland? We focus on using local independent suppliers, which is one of the reasons we chose this road. We also love the cultural diversity of the local community - we get such a mixed bunch of people coming in from

students to real traditional ale drinkers, which is down to our extensive drinks menu.

What makes your service different from other companies?: We have really tried to push the level of service to match the standards of service in New York. We also want to make it an accessible speakeasy as well - not one where its overly secretive and you have to ring a doorbell.

What service do you provide to the people of Bishopston & Redland?

We wanted to create something that’s accessible to the local community. We believe that a bar is what it’s patrons and community make it, which is why we serve true, locally sourced foods, well crafted cocktails and brews all within a live music environment. Music includes swing, jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, with live performances three nights a week from local musicians.

What are your plans for the future of the business?:

There will be food promotions

going on throughout June. On the 12th and 19th, from 12-8pm, there will be free taster samples from the menu. We’re also looking to extend the time we’re serving food until, and get more live music and bands performing. We’re also holding a big event on July 4th for Independence Day - so watch this space.

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell

BLURB: It’s July 1976. In London, it hasn’t rained for months, gardens are filled with aphids, water comes from a standpipe, and Robert Riordan tells his wife, Gretta, that he’s going round the corner to buy a newspaper. He doesn’t come back. The search for Robert brings Gretta’s

children - two estranged sisters and a brother on the brink of divorce - back home, each with different ideas as to where their father might have gone. None of them suspects that their mother might have an explanation that even now she cannot share. Amazon Review: Maggie O’Farrell’s eagerly anticipated latest novel ‘Instructions for a Heatwave’ is a very readable and entertaining story that pulls the reader in from the very first pages…this is a beautifully written story and a very perceptive observation of the internal dynamics of family relationships; of how we try to conceal things and about the lies we tell to ourselves and others. Throughout her story Maggie O’Farrell cleverly reveals layer after layer of secrets and misconceptions making this story both a compelling and intelligent read. Children’s Fiction - Read and enjoyed by Charlotte Parrott (9 years old)

The Enchanted Glass

by Diana Wynne Jones BLURB: When Andrew Hope’s magician grandfather dies, he leaves his house and field-of-care to his grandson who spent much of his childhood at the house. Andrew has forgotten much of this, but he remembers the very strong-minded staff and the fact that his grandfather used to

47

put the inedibly large vegetables on the roof of the shed, where they’d have vanished in the morning. He also remembers the very colourful stained glass window in the kitchen door, which he knows it is important to protect. Into this mix comes young Aidan Cain, who turns up from the orphanage asking for safety. Exactly who he is and why he’s there is unclear, but a strong connection between the two becomes apparent. There is a mystery to be solved, and nothing is as it appears to be. But nobody can solve the mystery, until they find out exactly what it is! CHARLOTTE’S REVIEW: I enjoyed this book because it is full of ideas for young writers. Andrew owns a huge house and a field of care but, suddenly, Aidan arrives thinking that Jocelyn (Andrew’s grandfather), will help him with his life. But Jocelyn is long gone... I recommend this book to all readers that like magic (e.g. Harry Potter). Show Less For these books and many, many more great titles, come along to Cheltenham Road Library and let us point you in the right direction. If we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, you can reserve any item from over 2 million items across LibrariesWest, and collect from a library of your choice for only £1 per item (free for young people aged 17 and under).

NHS is a treasure – don’t sell it SAVING the National Health Service is a prime concern for a group of local campaigners. Bishopston resident and campaign co-ordinator, Mike Campbell, is part of the 'Protect our NHS' group, and has been campaigning since 2012 against the perceived sell-off of the service to private companies. Mr Campbell - who was born the year before the NHS came into practice - said: "The reality is that the government has spent £3 billion on a top-down reorganisation of the health service with private companies continuing to bid for huge NHS contracts. "The NHS budget has been cut by £20 billion, one in three hospitals face a financial crisis, waiting lists are growing and Accident and Emergency services are struggling to cope. At the same time, numerous services are being outsourced to private companies for profit." 'Protect our NHS' grew out of a petition set up by the 38 Degrees website in 2012 to oppose the privatisation of the

South Gloucestershire. The broad-based group which includes current and former health sector workers believes that the NHS is heading towards an American-style private insurance-based health system, which would be "very bad news" for anyone on a low income. They also believe that if NHS funds are being used to pay shareholders of the private companies, there will be less money to spend on caring for patients. Mr Campbell - a retired probation officer and former social care training manager - claims that large companies from the United States want to run English hospitals, but it will cost a lot more, for a less efficient service.

He added: "Many of us close to the health service believe that bad press is deliberately orchestrated by the government to undermine the service's credibility. "The NHS is one of our greatest treasures - it's universal and free for everyone. But less and less is becoming free and we think it's a scandal that private companies are making large profits from providing NHS services - we have to wake up to what's going on and stop any further encroachment on the NHS." The milder weather provides new opportunities for burglars. Many burglaries involve no forced entry. The two most recent burglaries in Bishopston involved an open ground floor window and a front door that had been left open. Burglars want as little fuss as possible when ‘breaking’ in, a window or open door is a great invitation. Please can I urge readers to check windows and doors before leaving home, and also to think about how easy it would be for a burglar to get in via an open ground floor window even when your home is occupied.

Neighbourhood Watch

We recently attended a neighbourhood watch event at the newly developed county cricket ground. The aim of the event was to encourage new neighbourhood watches and to support existing ones. Advice was given about how to set up and we also discussed how useful watches can be. We also talked about how the internet has helped to get messages across and how some people are afraid to dip their toes into the online world. We are hoping to run an internet awareness session where we look at online security and help those who are put off from

using the internet gain from the advantages it can bring.

Schools Another issue that is often brought to our attention is school traffic. The schools in Bishopston are amongst the busiest in the south west and are often asked by the schools and residents to help alleviate problems around dropoff and pick up times. The number of children going to the schools seems to increase along with the size of the buildings; however the roads around them hardly change. We are hoping to join forces with the council parking wardens to tackle yellow lines, zig-zags and obstructions around the schools in a joined up way.

News from the local policing team with PCSO David Said

Speed Watch We now have a date for training for our community speed watch volunteers. If any readers would like to get involved with reducing drivers speed in Bishopston, please drop me a line at david.said@avonandsomerset.police.uk and we can add you to the two-hour evening slot on June 20.

Have a safe and crime free June.

Peter builds solid business after buying agency for £1 A REDLAND businessman, who bought his company for £1, is now enjoying a turnover of almost half a million a year. Peter Ellis, owner of Accommodation Limited, started out with little more than a telephone and desk when he set up his own letting agency 23 years ago. The business, with its headquarters in Chandos Road, is one of the largest independent letting and residential property management agents in the area. The married father of two said: “I think I got a great deal when I bought it for £1 as it was a good quality business.” Peter, 51, started his venture in Queen’s Road, Clifton, in 1991 with 15 landlords as his customer base. He bought the business from Aspect Property Management Limited after the agency decided to focus on other areas of their business. Peter said: “I got a call to say

I could have the business for £1 if I bought it that day. I picked up the keys just hours later.” In 2006, Peter was bought out by Humberts. But during the stock market crash, Humberts went into liquidation. Peter then bought the company back for £1. He managed to retain all of the staff, and all except one still work for him today. Peter has overcome two recessions and a merger to make his firm a success. He now manages over 300

properties and still works with a dozen of his original customers. Peter added: "We want to expand the business organically

and our target is to have 500 properties under management with two years."

This year’s run, supported by Noel Edmonds, will take place on Sunday 14 September on Bristol Downs where people will walk, jog or run around the course to support the vital work of the BUI. Organised by Bristol Rotarians and sponsored by Spire Hospital Bristol, the James Tudor Foundation and Bakers Dolphin, there will also be live music, stalls and refreshments for a fun day out for all the family. People are encouraged to bring along picnics and soak up the atmosphere. Often called the “silent killer” due to few early symptoms, prostate cancer affects over 40,000 UK men each year of which over 10,000 do not survive. Registrations will be open soon on the website www.runforthefuture.org.

Could you be a meeter or greeter at Glos CC? ORGANISERS at Gloucestershire Cricket are looking for volunteers to join their Cricketeers team. The Cricketeers - who will hold a similar role to the ‘Games Makers’ at the London Olympics - will be responsible for creating an “unforgettable” match day experience for spectators. The roles organisers are looking to fill are ‘meeters and greeters’ and ‘crowd hypers’. Applicants need to be enthusiastic, proud of the cricket club and Bristol, energetic, and eager about creating a festival atmosphere. Cricketeers are promised an amazing experience, full training, travel expenses, food and drink, a Cricketeers kit to keep, a certificate for personal development, a personal thank you letter from the club’s CEO, Will Brown, and two tickets to watch a cricket match at the Bristol Country Ground. Applicants must be at least 18-years-old, able to speak and read the English language, and be eligible to work in the UK. For more information about how to apply contact Roz Hutchings at roz.hutchings@glosccc.co.uk.

Steps challenge at Mem FUNDRAISERS will be stepping up this month to support St Peter’s Hospice. The Stadium Dash is taking place on June 7 and will challenge competitors to race up and down the 415 steps at Bristol Rovers Memorial Stadium to raise funds. Organisers are encouraging people to sign up and beat last year’s record time of 2 minutes 44 seconds. Visit www.stpetershospice.org for more information.
