Residents asked for views on design of Ashley Down station by Keri Beckingham A CONSULTATION has been launched to select the design for the proposed Ashley Down Rail Station. Reopening the station, on the site of the former Ashley Hill Station, will provide an alternative route into Bristol City Centre from Bishopston and St Andrews. As part of a public consultation, Bristol City Council’s Transport Engagement team have shared details of the improvements and changes needed to support access to the station, which is part of the MetroWest Phase 2 project to re-open the Henbury Line to passengers for the first time since 1964. It is also part of the West of England Combined Authority’s plans to significantly increase travel by rail and improve air quality in the region. It is hoped that improvements to walking and cycling access at the station will benefit all members of the community, including realigning and reducing the gradient of paths to the station entrance. Proposals for the design also

include replacing three parking spaces on Station Road with two on-street accessible bays for Blue Badge holders and one loading bay; however there will be no additional parking created for the station. The design and build of the station is being managed by Network Rail, with a proposed opening date of 2023. Sharing their views on the proposals, a spokesman for Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways said: “It's very good to see progress at last towards opening Ashley Down train station. The new station, as part of MetroWest, will play an important part in Bristol's transition to zero carbon by 2030, allowing local people direct access to the rail network. “The changes to Concorde Way will make it better for passing walkers and cyclists, while allowing rail passengers to safely access the station. We think it's vitally important that the new station is properly integrated with bus services though. Access from Ashley Down is good, but we'd also like to see improved access from

Fresh look at charging zones idea

by Keri Beckingham A NEW consultation has been launched for the public to have their say on revised proposals for a potential Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in Bristol, which would charge certain vehicles for driving into the city centre. Research estimates that 300 people each year in Bristol die prematurely because of our dirty air, compared to just 12 in traffic accidents, and that air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions. The annual health cost of the impacts of poor air quality in Bristol is estimated at £83m. In support of Clean Air Day 2020 on October 8, Bristol City Council asked local people, businesses and organisations to consider how small changes can make a big difference in cutting toxic fumes across the city – and

to make use of the free tools and advice available to help people be the change. This included encouraging people to think twice before using open fires or wood-burning stoves, to walk, cycle or scoot for short journeys, and to turn off car engines when stationary. In addition, the council is also giving more priority to buses, pedestrians and cyclists on roads across the city, such as Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street, to make less polluting journeys a more attractive option for everyone. Bristol City Council missed the third deadline to submit a plan to clean up Bristol’s air in September 2019. Following further air quality modelling to explore alternative ways that traffic pollution could be reduced, the council is consulting on a small and larger charging zone option, and in our

area the larger would be likely to end at the junction of Berkeley Rd/Gloucester Rd. The council hopes a combination of major transport improvements and behaviour change may help to clean up Bristol’s air quality, maintaining the positive changes that were experienced during lockdown and lessening the need to charge or ban certain vehicles via a CAZ.

A WORLD OF

Quality

However, if pollution returns to the illegal, pre-Covid levels, a charging zone will be required. Residents are being asked to give their views on two new options for improving air quality, and both would involve charging the most polluting vehicles to drive into central Bristol. Mayor Marvin Rees said: “Everyone faces their own unique set of obstacles in tackling the

to clean up our air environmental challenges we all face so we would encourage everyone to look at the changes they can make to their own lifestyles. No matter how big or small the change is, it will make a difference if we all work together, and the council is here to help people along their journey. If we unite we can make our city a healthier place for everyone to live.” Eleanor Combley, Green Councillor for Bishopston and Ashley Down, said: “It’s clear that we have to do something about Bristol’s illegal levels of air pollution, which causes hundreds of deaths each year. The Mayor has suggested that a few roads closed to through traffic in the centre of the city, and a bit of encouraging people to change how they travel, will be enough to reach legal levels of clean air in the city. But some of the worst traffic and air pollution is outside people’s homes in poorer parts

of Bristol. And if we want people to switch from their cars we need to make the alternatives safe and appealing. “These initiatives on their own are unlikely to lead to clean, breathable air without further measures. Charging the most polluting vehicles is one way to have more of an impact and improve the air we all breathe. But most importantly, I’d like to see projects to make roads safer for walking and cycling rolled out across Bristol, not just in the centre, to support local shopping areas and create more liveable neighbourhoods all around the city.” Martin Fodor, Green councillor for Redland, said: “With air pollution rising to illegal levels again people are worried that their health is suffering, medication for asthma is again needed, and the link to respiratory viruses is causing anxiety as well.

“It’s inevitable that the charging options have to be considered as the government knows this will work – frankly it looks unlikely that the changes in the centre will be enough on their own. People all over the city want safe air and safe streets so I hope the council will finally be decisive enough to tackle this, support residents and businesses with the changes needed, and not just try to scrape through the legal limit for NOx pollution.” Tom Brook, Labour councillor for Bishopston and Ashley Down added: “Whilst planning is continuing to implement a charging zone if necessary, it

is the council’s preference to adopt an approach to improve our air quality through other means, without charging. This would incorporate a variety of methods and would build on the decisive action already taken to pedestrianise the Old City, close Bristol Bridge and introduce wider cycle lanes at key locations.” As part of the consultation, the council is drawing on conclusions from independent academics within the ClairCity project, which collected local views and found that Bristolians want to contribute to tackling environmental problems. To have your say on a charging zone for vehicles, complete the online survey at: gov.uk/caz2020 before November 22. Association wins pledge of community benefits on St Christopher's site

WESTBURY Park Community Association has affirmed its aim to achieve community benefits as part of the redevelopment of the former St Christopher’s School. The Association’s response to Aurora Group’s planned sale of the site, which will draw on input from all in the community, is being co-ordinated by Jeff Bishop who has considerable experience on planning matters and community engagement. St Christopher’s School, established in 1945, provided education and care for children and young adults with severe mental and physical disabilities until it closed last year. Aurora became owners of the site in 2015, although Hyde Lodge (an adult care home) is remaining in its current use and does not form part of the redevelopment site. The site is of a substantial size running along Westbury Park road, overlooking the Downs, bordering Redland Ward. Jeff Bishop told the Bishopston Voice: “This early stage was about establishing what Aurora might have in

I received a reply from Shay Ramalingam, Chair of the Aurora Board, who made it clear that his personal aim was to produce proposals that would secure, as far as possible, the support of the Westbury Park community and deliver positive community benefits. “Mr Ramalingam told us that he had commissioned planning and architectural consultants to produce early ideas which have been sent to Bristol City Council in what is called a ‘Pre Application Request’ to find out from planners what might and might not be possible.”

n NEWS Area so high standards would apply in terms of uses, amount of development, design etc • The Lodges fronting Westbury Park would stay, as would the Grade 2 Listed Building and all the significant trees on the rear land • Vehicle access to the rear land (only) would be from The Glen, perhaps from Bayswater Avenue • Uses would be either all residential for older people or a combination of that and market housing. Ahead of a response to Aurora’s ‘Pre App Request’ Jeff Bishop explained: “The planners may not agree with what was in the Request; they may want more or less development of a different type and they may or may not support vehicle access via The Glen.” Jeff is confident about Mr Ramalingam’s wish to produce proposals capable of gaining the support of the Westbury Park community. He said: “This is a much better position for the

community to be in than trying to work with a landowner or developer who may be purely interested in maximising profit.” In an open letter to Westbury Park residents Mr Ramalingam said: “It was good to meet some of you at meetings during which we discussed the testing plans for our pre-application planning assessment. These were, as we said, testing plans and they are going to change based on your feedback and the feedback we receive from planners and the Community Association.” Mr Ramalingam said that he will be happy to present plans as they evolve ahead of any planning application and to discuss any concerns that local residents and the community, especially immediate neighbours, may have. Any queries, comments, issues and ideas concerning St. Christopher’s can be sent to the Community Association by email westburyparkca@gmail.com. Comments will be recorded and, where appropriate, responded to.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP Schools under unnecessary strain in Bristol As Covid cases rise again, I am working to understand how this is affecting schools in Bristol – and pressing the government to get a grip before we see another crisis for children’s education. This work was triggered by a number of teachers, parents and carers from across the constituency who have contacted me to warn that delays in Covid testing and problems receiving results are affecting Bristol children’s education, leading to staff shortages and pupils needlessly isolating. When staff feel unwell, difficulties getting tests, long travel times to testing centres and long waits for results mean staff members are forced to isolate from school, leading to unsustainable – and completely avoidable – staff shortages. This is putting huge pressure on teachers and staff who have worked so hard to make schools safe. And it’s not just affecting the staff. In some Bristol schools, large

numbers of students are having to isolate long periods while they wait for a classmate’s test results to come back. As the number of Covid-19 cases rise, I worry these situations will become increasingly common. I’ve written to all schools and early years childcare providers in Bristol West to find out if they are affected. I will then take these cases up with colleagues in the Shadow Education team. I am immensely grateful to everyone - school staff, parents, public health and others who have worked so hard to get schools open again. The national lockdown bought us some time to sort out Test and Trace – but the government wasted this time. As a result of this incompetence, our schools will probably be on the front line of another entirely predictable, and preventable, crisis.

New study on Covid transmission in schools

I am speaking to researchers at the University of Bristol, working on the COMMinS study

of transmission in children and the symptoms they exhibit. This internationally important work involves 24 schools across the Bristol area. I am working to increase awareness of their findings as they emerge – which could prove key in slowing the spread of the virus as we go into a very difficult winter.

Exams next year

Many of you have also asked me to push the government for clarity on next year’s A Levels and GCSEs after the fiasco of this year’s algorithm chaos. I’ve written to the Secretary of State for Education to ask him to deal with this urgently and I’m pleased that there is now some progress in that Gavin Williamson has said exams will be pushed back to the end of summer term to give students more time to catch up on the curriculum missed during the lockdown.

Decolonising the curriculum in medicine

Many people suggested

Thangam Debbonaire column

‘decolonising’ the curriculum as an important response to Black Lives Matter. But what does that mean? In an inspiring discussion with several students and staff at the University of Bristol’s School of Medicine, I was fascinated to see scientific teaching engaging with this problem. For them it means demanding anti-racist practises in every aspect of the course and teaching that reflects the diversity of the country, for example being taught to understand signs of illness on darker skin.

AMD Solicitors WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

Cash boost for the arts in Bristol TWENTY NINE arts and culture organisations in Bristol are to receive a £6.8million cash boost from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The Bristol Old Vic, SS Great Britain Trust, St George’s Bristol, Watershed Arts Trust and Motion Events each gain substantial sums. Aerospace Bristol, based in Filton, is also a major beneficiary. ‘ New normal’ for pupils at St Bons IT has been an incredibly busy and productive start to the new school year at St Bonaventures. All members of the school community have shown great resilience in how they have adapted to our new ways of operating under Covid restrictions. The school has continued to offer breakfast and after school club provision since the start of Term 1 and this is working well with children grouped in their year group pods. As children have moved through the term, the school has been able to introduce some of the ‘normal’ things pupils enjoy in a typical school year, including after school sports clubs such as football, netball and hockey. A Year 4 drama group is working on a performance of A Midsummer

Night’s Dream which pupils plan to film and share with parents. This year the offer of forest school is extended to pupils in other year groups as well as those in Reception. During Terms 1 and 2 Open Days have been allocated for prospective parents to sign up to. Tours are taking place in small socially distanced groups. Parents are required to wear masks and will not enter any classrooms. A video tour will also be available during Term 2 for prospective parents who do not have the opportunity to look around. This will be available via email upon request. Please email admissions.stbonaventures@ bristol-schools.uk for more information.

n FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) has been celebrating black achievements during Black History Month in a variety of ways. It has commissioned a piece of artwork to feature in the school’s Atrium. Seven Saints of St Pauls celebrates the legacy of people from the community who broke down racial barriers and worked for full integration. This unique artwork is even closer to the school’s heart, for one of the Saints,

Delores Campbell, is related to Assistant Vice Principal (and former Fairfield student) Cashan Campbell. She said: “Michele Curtis, Creator of Seven Saints of St Pauls, has helped share the stories of these unsung heroes in some fantastic works of art. This affects me on a personal level, as my beloved Nanny, Delores Campbell was one of these influential figures who touched the hearts of many. Fairfield

is well known for its diverse community for which we are extremely proud. We cannot wait to have this large and colourful mural for all to enjoy at the end of this special month… it couldn’t be more apt.” The theme for Black History Month 2020, strongly endorsed at Fairfield, is ‘Black History is all our History’ to ensure black history is not something that is studied in October, but all the time.

Work set to start on Stoke Lodge pavilion COTHAM School has secured all the funding it needs to fully repair the sports pavilion on the school playing fields at Stoke Lodge. The school has been allocated a grant from the Government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency and this has been topped up with money from Cotham's capital funds. The school has appointed a local, Bristol based building company to carry out the refurbishment work. The family-owned company will use a small number of Bristol-based sub-contractors for specialist skills and Bristol companies to supply the building materials required to complete this project. Building works are expected to start on site very soon as the project must be completed by February 2021. Cotham School has full approval from the city council as the landowner to carry out the refurbishment and the scheme of works does not require planning approval. Cotham School said: “It is great news that students, staff and sports club users will soon have a newly refurbished pavilion to use when they visit our playing fields. We know this will be very popular with everyone, and enhance our sports provision.”

Colston's Girls' School set for new identity COLSTON'S Girls’ School, founded in 1891, is to have a new name. Eighty one per cent of students and staff voted to change the name of the school, which was built with money endowed by Edward Colston to support education. Although a majority of the 454 respondents to a public consultation opposed a name change, the board of Venturers Trust, which runs the school, unanimously agreed that it was time to remove the link to the slave trader from the school's title. The new name is expected to be announced this month. Board chair Gail Bragg said: “For some people this announcement will be disappointing and for others it will be cause for celebration and it’s important that we acknowledge that. “We will not be erasing the

history of CGS; it is a part of Bristol’s story which is now an integral and permanent part of the curriculum. However, the school will be forging a new identity that represents its diverse and inclusive community and this is the momentous beginning of a new chapter.” CEO of Venturers Trust, David Watson, said: “Students have experienced the power of democracy first-hand and I am extremely proud of the respect they have shown for others throughout the process. It is important that young people understand how to influence change in a positive way so that they develop the core skills necessary to build a sustainable and inclusive future for a global community. In a year that has been filled with so many different challenges, the school community can look to the future as they rebrand and renew.”

Eco-apartments for SEN students open THE Mayor of Bristol cut the ribbon on City of Bristol College’s new half-a-millionpound eco-apartments project at its Brislington Centre at the end of September. Marvin Rees joined Councillor Anna Keen, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Bristol College, Andy Forbes, and students at the Brislington Centre’s eco-apartment grand opening. The eco-apartments each have two bedrooms, a living space with cooking and washing facilities and a bathroom. The homes are a joint project between the college and Bristol City Council, with the council financing the venture to better support special educational needs (SEN) students in Bristol. The Brislington Centre is managed in partnership with Bristol City Council and offers week-day accommodation for up to 13 students with SEN. The centre’s team supports the students to develop skills for independent living, including cleaning, cooking, washing as well as learning how to budget and use public transport. The three eco-apartments act as a stepping stone for the Brislington Centre students to live independently. The accommodation will mean the students who have been residents at the centre for a number of years will have the chance to further develop the skills they have learned and the opportunity to move out of the residential house and into

their own living quarters as a prerequisite for living completely independently after college. At the opening, Mayor Rees said: “I am delighted to open the new eco-apartments at the Brislington Centre, Bristol’s first educational residential training centre for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), today, as part of Project Rainbow. “Before 2017 facilities like this did not exist in Bristol; together, with families, young people and the City of Bristol College, we have worked to make sure that our young people with SEND have access to education and training opportunities, while being supported to live independent and meaningful lives in their communities.” Guests at the opening were given a tour of the new facilities. Mr Forbes said: “The work of these fabulous new ecoapartments underlines our commitment as Bristol’s Further Education College to meeting as wide a range of educational needs as possible. The opportunity for young people with disabilities to live a full and independent life is great for them, great for their families and creates a really inclusive local community.” Councillor Keen said: “Having a modern facility like this in the city means our young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a supportive environment, while being able to live independently in their local community."

n ADVERTISING FEATURE AN exciting opportunity to study a degree in stage and screen acting right here in south Bristol has launched for aspiring actors. From September 2021, Tobacco Factory Theatres in North Street will be hosting a twoyear BA (Hons) in Acting for Stage and Screen, thanks to a new partnership with creative industry training provider, boomsatsuma. It is part of the company's new Bristol School of Acting, aimed at empowering young people. Tobacco Factory Theatres will be hosting an innovative and empowering two-year acting degree course, after teaming up with leading creative industry training provider, boomsatsuma. The Acting for Stage and Screen BA (Hons) is part of the company's new "future-focused, conservatoire-style" drama school, Bristol School of Acting, and begins in autumn 2021. It is an intensive degree with 43 weeks of teaching per year - the same amount of contact hours as a three-year course, but students save around £5,000 in tuition fees and a year’s living costs. Students will study as a resident acting company in training at the theatre, with opportunities to collaborate and learn with professional actors, directors and visiting artists. Mike Tweddle, artistic director at Tobacco Factory Theatres, said: “We’re delighted to be embarking on this uniquely symbiotic relationship between a professional theatre and a drama school. “The partnership will enrich and empower

Acclaimed director Nancy Medina has been appointed as Bristol School of Acting’s co-artistic director, with course content - accredited by Bath Spa University - devised by the school's patron and Daredevil star Charlie Cox and New York's prestigious Pace University. Speaking about her new role, Nancy said: “Our industry has to change; I don’t like what I see at the moment and I believe we can drive that change at boomsatsuma. “We are creating a new kind of course that will empower young people to find their voices and make themselves heard. We are training actors who can shape the industry of the future. “Starting from fresh means we can be bold and steer a radical approach to inclusivity, with a pro-active anti-discrimination policy. It’s a priority for me to bring opportunity to the marginalised areas of society.” Stuart Wood, co-artistic director of Bristol

Bristol School of Acting's co-artistic directors Nancy Medina and Stuart Wood School of Acting explains his motivation for creating the school: “I’ve worked in many drama schools during my 38-year career and have delivered some great training, but it’s time to challenge the orthodoxy of practitioners who have dominated actor training for decades. “It’s time to look at new approaches suited to this fast-changing industry and offer something different to create the actors of tomorrow. “Bristol has a strong cultural heritage and we hope to make it stronger. Our partners, The Bottle Yard Studios and Tobacco Factory Theatres, sit at the centre of the city’s cultural heartbeat, adding a wealth of insight and networking opportunities for our students, as we embark on this pioneering journey.” For more details about the course and how to apply, visit www.boomsatsuma.education/ schoolofacting.

Bristol University Air Squadron wins national award STUDENTS from Bristol University Air Squadron (BUAS) have won the Royal Air Force Air Cadets/University Air Squadron of the Year title at the RAF Benevolent Fund’s annual awards. The ceremony, held virtually on 13 October, was attended by hundreds of RAF personnel and supporters of the Fund in a night which celebrates the achievements of those who support the RAF’s leading welfare charity, from dedicated individuals and groups to RAF stations and corporate partners. The win comes after years of supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund from fundraising to volunteering – the students have done it all! They have cycled 100km to raise funds, organised quizzes and bake sales, volunteered for bucket collections, performed as a cheer squad for runners taking part in the Bristol Half Marathon – as well as some members running the race – and helped the charity to spread the word about the lifechanging support it can offer. Sqn Ldr Si Brewis, Officer Commanding BUAS, said: “Thank you to my staff and especially thank you to the students. This award is in recognition of their significant efforts and their time that they have put into supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund,

both raising funds and raising awareness in the Fund’s 100th year.” The award was presented by Dave Appleby, Director Marketing and Sales at Electronics UK Leonardo, who sponsored it. Air Vice-Marshal Chris Elliot, Controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “During my first few months at the Fund I was struck by the dedication of our supporters who go to incredible lengths to ensure we are able to continue our work supporting the RAF Family. The awards are our opportunity to celebrate those who make all of this possible and thank all our supporters. “Huge congratulations to all of the winners, especially BUAS for all they do. We truly would not be able to do what we do without every single one of our supporters.” Now in its eighth year, the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of its supporters, personnel on stations and corporate partners who support the charity each year. The RAF Benevolent Fund has been supporting the RAF for more than 100 years, providing help through the toughest times. If you know an RAF veteran in need, go to rafbf.org to find out how the Fund could help.

Meet Magic Dragon Preschool IF you are looking for childcare, then come along to Magic Dragon Preschool for a visit. We are a well-established, friendly, nurturing and childcentred local preschool situated off Bishop Road/Kings Drive in BS7. We are located in a quiet area with ample bike and car parking for easy drop-off and collection. Our setting has a fantastic environment consisting of two very large halls and two large gardens situated away from busy roads. We welcome children at any point during the year after they turn two and a half years old. This enables us to offer families an individualised settling-in plan and time to build up relationships with our children and meet their needs. We have a high staff-to- child ratio, allowing us to really get to know our children, follow their interests and plan for stimulating and purposeful play. Our aim is for every child to grow into a curious, kind, resilient, independent and happy child. We offer very flexible attendance on Mondays toThursdays from 9am - 1pm during term time, funded places for two-year-olds, funding for free of up to 15 free hours per week, and we accept childcare vouchers. Above all, our long-standing, experienced and highly qualified staff team go above and beyond to ensure that each and every child is nurtured and provided with the best early education possible. Harriet, a parent, described her child’s experience of starting at Magic Dragon Preschool during Covid-19: “Magic Dragon Preschool is everything I wished for and more! The staff are a knowledgeable dream team who truly understand how children thrive. My son runs in every time, so excited that he forgets to say bye. “The pandemic hasn’t got in the way of staff making sure children settle in smoothly. With Covid restrictions we have only been able to settle our children in the garden but this has been encouraged for as long and as often as needed. The ‘Having Fun at Home’ booklet* Magic Dragon produced in response to lockdown, the activity packs available for borrowing and the booklet with pictures of the staff and key info sent by post to each child meant that the children were able to start

their ‘settling in’ long before term started. “Communication has been outstanding and the weekly newsletter and daily social media updates have enabled me to talk to my son about all the things he has been up to which has helped

build our home-school connection. I couldn’t ask for more from Magic Dragon Preschool - we love it!” To take a look at the fun we have at preschool or book a Covid compliant visit, visit www. magicdragonpreschool.org.uk or call 07971 421 834.

Please continue to follow social distancing, wear a face covering on public transport and when shopping, use the NHS app, and take part in the test and trace programme if necessary. Nevil Road surgery Portakabins The Portakabins placed on the site of the former Bishopston Medical Practice on Nevil Road have remained in place since the surgery closed. Gloucester Road Medical Practice has taken on many of

the Bishopston Medical Practice patients, and are currently refurbishing and expanding their site on Church Road to accommodate this. In the meantime, they are planning to use the Nevil Road site as a satellite surgery. However, the planning permission for the Portakabins has lapsed, and so the council has opened an enforcement case against the NHS. The NHS have been given the opportunity to gain a new temporary planning permission for the Portakabins on the Nevil Rd site until the Church Rd site is ready. If the application for planning permission is refused then the Portakabins will be removed and the Council’s enforcement team will ensure that this happens. Please let us know if you have any comments or questions. Ashley Down station As part of rail transport improvements in Bristol, a new station is planned in Ashley Down, at the end of Station Road. The proposed station, which is likely to open in 2023, will be geared towards serving the local community, and will increase connectivity both within the city and further afield. It will also provide an additional sustainable option for fans travelling to the Cricket Club or Memorial Stadium. A consultation is now open on the access designs for the station. The station entrance will be located on Concorde Way where the path meets Station Road. The route to the station from Muller Road will be via the existing subway footway. The proposals for the station also include improvements to pedestrian and cycle access on Station Road, enhanced planting, a ‘hop on’ point for cyclists and two new accessible parking bays. The consultation can be accessed here and closes on the 1st November: travelwest.info/

projects/ashley-down-station The link also contains a detailed description of the proposals, an FAQ and illustrations. Dog Control Public Space Protection Order The council is consulting on a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for Dog Control. A PSPO bans or restricts certain acts or behaviour in a specific area. They’re used in areas where certain behaviour is having a negative effect on the quality of life of those using the space. The Council is proposing to put in place a city-wide PSPO that mirrors the previous 2017 PSPO. This would stay in place until 2023. The dog control PSPO covers three areas: dogs on leads, dog fouling and dog exclusions (i.e. where dogs aren’t allowed). The consultation is open until November 9 and is accessible here: bristol.gov.uk/ PSPODogControl

Holistic African reparations towards planetary repairs Reparations: the making of amends for wrong or injury done; monetary or other compensation payable by a country or institution to an individual or group of people for a historical wrong. Abolition: the complete ending of an activity or custom by law or official action; the legal prohibition of slavery, especially the institutional enslavement of Black people in the U.S. Like Abolition, Reparations as a term took and takes time to be understood. Yet confined to history or obscurity, the terms had to be considered very recently when H.M. Treasury put out a tweet that depicted African enslavement and included the text: “Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. Britain borrowed such a large sum of money for the Slavery Abolition Act that it wasn’t paid off until 2015.” Meaning in 1833 after Abolition, enslavers and plantation owners were compensated from their loss, whilst the former enslaved were not compensated at

all and that we as tax payers were paying this money as recently as 2015. This uncomfortable truth, may well feature as a topic in the All Party Parliamentary Commission into Truth And Reparatory Justice (APPCITRJ) which campaigners are calling for. The first of its kind, the commission would consider the case of reparations for the harm that was done to enslaved people of African heritage and involve looking at the present day impact on individuals and communities. Leading reparations activists at the Stop the Maangamizi Campaign, have led calls towards this commission and also maintain the connection between holistic reparations and planetary repairs with a focus on continental ecocide. They also cite that the first step towards historic reparations is to stop the harm and abuse of people and the planet that is still occurring https://stopthemaangamizi.com/. A motion requesting that the Mayor and Bristol City Council support the calls for the (APPCITRJ) will be presented in due course Cleo Lake 07584 480531 cllr.cleo.lake@bristol.gov.uk

In Cotham this month... Cllr. Anthony Negus (Cotham, LibDem) writes: Chandos Road partial closure I‘m hearing Locals’ mixed feelings about this. Many are astounded that a long-term intermittent closure of one end of the road was set up without any consultation and so without addressing problems arising. Update: this closure is under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO), not an ETRO as Bristol Bridge. This means there will be no consultation throughout the closure period that ends when Covid emergency rules cease, or in 18 months if sooner. Alongside today's niggles, there is wider interest in long-term changes to Chandos Road on the ‘Healthy Neighbourhoods’ model. Many of the present issues will need to be better resolved for that to work too. So I’m hosting a virtual ‘Zoom’ meeting on Monday 2nd November at 19.00 for views on Chandos Road now and future prospects. Please put this in diaries. Contact me for Zoom joining details.

Covid, students and us I know many are worried about high infection rates amongst students and how this affects our community. I’m passing on observations from a briefing I had on 14/10 from Bristol’s Director of Public Health. Essentially she said that high student infection levels were inevitable, are overwhelmingly being contained within Halls, and that there was no evidence of transference into communities. She was unshakeable on that, which is constantly monitored, praised the University for its planning and support and thanked the many young people who have voluntarily tested and isolated though mainly asymptomatic. I felt you should hear what’s behind the headlines... For the latest Public Health guidance, visit: http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ coronavirus

n FROM YOUR COUNCILLORS In Redland this month... Dangerous parking Frustratingly there are still no concrete plans from the Mayor around how to tackle dangerous parking on our streets. Martin and Fi met with the Cabinet member responsible to voice our dismay at further dither and delay and to discuss the conclusions to be drawn from the long awaited parking survey. We were told that a more “holistic” approach would be worked on and that there was now an interest in ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’ approaches. After years of inaction we were hopingfor something more specific. We’ll keep you posted and keep pushing for real action. Clean air The city has launched a consultation on two Air Quality Management options (see news pages) but some Redland residents have questions about Berkeley Rd being linked to the medium Clean Air Zone boundary – while still

affected by unresolved speeding and rat running. The proposals also risk impacts on Egerton Rd being just outside the boundary proposed. Martin raised this with officers before but has been told they are not affected by the legal NOx target. Potholes Glimmers of hope appear to be showing with several road closures being scheduled for resurfacing – we hope the backlog of pothole repairs will be tackled as these are completed. In some areas such as the Kersteman Rd/Cranbrook Road crossroad the situation is no laughing matter for cyclists and drivers alike. We’re still pressing for it to be tackled as a priority despite being warned that funds are less than the work needed. Safe crossing on Cranbrook Rd We’ve been informed that the crossing on Cranbrook Road is

n FROM YOUR COUNCILLORS In St Andrews this month... Overton Road closure scheme The Council are preparing to consult on the closure of Overton Road in the section between the junctions with Gloucester Road and North Road. We are liaising with them about how this is conducted and how the scheme will work if it is implemented (initially on a temporary basis). Government pavement parking consultation The Department for Transport is consulting on how to better manage pavement parking. This is a big problem in St Andrews that affects all pedestrians, in particular people pushing buggies and disabled people. The consultation asks whether Councils should be given stronger powers to tackle the problem, or whether the ban on pavement parking that currently applies in London should be extended nationally. It closes on 22nd November – visit bit. ly/3761kf3 to have your say.

Bishopston Library The library is now open for a ‘Call and Collect’ service. You can arrange a visit in order to return books or to collect reserved or pre-ordered books, between 11am – 4pm Monday, and Wednesday – Saturday. Visit bit.ly/3j35SoO for more information. Ashley Down station consultation Residents are being asked to give their views on the proposed design of public access arrangements for the new Ashley Down railway station in Bristol. Ashley Down is one of three new stations that will be built as part of the MetroWest railway network, a transformational rail improvement programme which will re-open the Henbury Line to passengers for the first time since 1964. Feedback on the design of access to the station will support WECA and Bristol City Council to improve the proposals ahead of any formal consultation. To have

likely to take some time, as despite having won the funds to build it, there is a chronic shortage of highways officers, with (at the latest count) 6 out of 13 posts vacant. We’ve asked to be kept updated with staff numbers, as this is a situation that clearly cannot continue indefinitely. We’re also supporting residents and parents worried about the risks for the growing number of children using the crossing to get to school since term started.

Ecological Emergency

We’d like to reiterate our thanks to everyone helping tackle and prevent the pandemic and its consequences. It’s clear that there are still risks from the second wave of infections. Please follow advice to avoid risky behaviours, and also look after each other.

A new One City document has been launched to promote action on the Ecological Emergency – which affects us locally and globally. The goals of promoting wildlife friendly land management and reducing use of harmful herbicides could affect management of verges and parks - both mowing, planting, and unresolved chemical spraying issues.

your say on the design of access to Ashley Down station and complete the survey visit bit.ly/3iXqmz3. One City Ecological Emergency Strategy Organisations from across Bristol have come together in the first coordinated drive to protect natural life in and around the city. Following on from the declaration of an ecological emergency in February this year, the One City Ecological Emergency Strategy has been launched. It unveils a 10-year plan to protect wildlife, ecosystems and habitats in the face of the rapid decline in wildlife locally and globally. A series of discussions have been held with city partners to examine the four key areas the strategy covers, which are defined by its goals: Space for nature – at least a third of land in Bristol is to be managed for the benefit of wildlife by 2030. Pesticides – reduce the use of pesticides in Bristol by at least half by 2030.

Lots of private e-scooters are visible around the area, although some have been seized and destroyed by police now. They are all illegal and can’t be used on any public highway. The regional trial designed to promote low carbon travel and curb reliance on cars is delayed but still anticipated. (See page 24 for further details.) Thanks

Pollution – 100% of Bristol’s waterways to have water quality that supports healthy wildlife by 2030. Our wider footprint – people and businesses to reduce consumption of products that undermine the health of wildlife and ecosystems around the world. Clean Air Zone consultation Bristol City Council needs to ensure the city’s air quality meets legal limits of air pollution in the shortest possible time. Ready to roll! E-scooters set to hit the road in sustainable transport trial by Keri Beckingham

THE name of the company appointed to deliver the region’s e-scooter trials has been announced. Residents and visitors will soon be able to get around on e-scooters provided by Swedish company Voi Technology Ltd. The hop-on hop-off devices will be available in Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire at key locations in such as stations, university campuses, hospitals and large employment sites. The 12-month trial is being led by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils. It will have some key rules, including: • Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, parks and any other areas. The only place that privately owned e-scooters can legally be used is on private land with the permission of the landowner. • Only e-scooters that are hired or leased through the West of England’s trial can be used legally on roads, cycle lanes or cycle tracks. Effectively, e-scooters that are part of the trial can be used wherever cycles are permitted. • E-scooters cannot be used on pavements.

Runner aims to raise £3000

• E-scooters are classed as motorised vehicles and riders of authorised trial e-scooters must hold a full or provisional driving licence. Through a longer-term rental scheme, residents will also be able to take e-scooters home and use them for journeys, with the hope that it will give them confidence that they can get to and from their destinations when bus and train capacity is limited. Rental e-scooters on the trial will be capped to a maximum speed of 15.5 mph, and geofencing technology will allow slower speed restrictions to be imposed in defined areas, which will be identified in collaboration with the police, the operator and equalities groups. Voi also has the ability to restrict or bar noncompliant users. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “This is an exciting prospect, bringing

PHRED Steer has run the Exmoor Trail Challenge this October to raise £3,000 and awareness about the danger of Coronavirus. He said: “I’m doing this to raise awareness and highlight how real and dangerous this virus is. I feel we need to do more to help protect the most vulnerable in our society.” Phred contracted undiagnosed Coronavirus back in March following a trip to New York and on his return to the UK, infected his family but his eldest daughter suffered more. He said: “It wasn’t just corona that was

a new, low carbon way to travel around the region, and making it accessible for every community. “We have been talking with our colleagues from other combined authorities running e-scooter trials around the country in order to learn from their experiences, and Voi bring their own experience too which is valuable. .” Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Scooters are a great way to travel while reducing emissions, air pollution and congestion, and we will work closely with the operator and share experiences with other cities to make sure they are used responsibly and safely by those taking up the trial.” WECA has been engaging with groups representing vulnerable road users – including the RNIB and Age UK – and will continue to do so throughout the e-scooter trial. It will also work closely with the operator, stakeholders and the public during the 12-month trial to continually review the trial and refine how it works. The exact start date for the trials is subject to discussions with Voi and authorisation from the Department of Transport, but it was thought that the trials would begin by the end of October. The location of the e-scooters and the cost of hire have yet to be announced. For more information, visit: https:// travelwest.info/projects/e-scooter-trial

n NEWS WINDOW Wanderland will be back in Bishopston for the seventh year running next spring, giving us all something to look forward to over the next few months. As the event takes place outdoors and social distancing can be maintained, the Window Wanderland committee are confident that this favourite family friendly community event can take place safely and in line with current Covid guidance. Make a date in your diary for the weekend of March 6 - 8, 2021. Sue Powell, one of the event organisers, says: “For those new to the area, imagine walking around the local streets at night and seeing your neighbourhood in a whole new light. Window Wanderland is a fun community project that started right here in Bishopston in 2015. “We invite all residents and traders in the area to make displays in their windows or gardens which then form a magical trail which can be explored by the whole community.

Window Wanderland will brighten our streets in March

“What’s in the displays is totally up to you: from a string of fairy lights to a band playing in the living room. It can be simple or spectacular - as long as it’s

family friendly, anything goes. “Window Wanderland has now spread to other areas across the UK and even as far as Canada and New Zealand. But we still

think we are one of the very best. Last year over 400 local residents, shops and businesses made a display in their windows or gardens, and in several areas neighbours got together to have themes in their streets. And you are all still coming up with new ideas for displays which is fantastic.” Photos of previous displays can be found on the Facebook pages for Bishopston Window Wanderland and Window Wanderland as well as other social media sites using the #windowwander So don’t be shy - sign up, spread the word and once again save the dates for this magical event. Art Trail 2020-style! ARTISTS in the North Bristol area are determined to go ahead with the popular North Bristol Art Trail during the last weekend of November. From sculpture to paintings, jewellery to printmaking, there's something delightful for everyone. For the first time, the trail will be open virtually via a public Facebook group, NBA Art Trail 2020. Join the group any time through November to see previews of artists' work. The virtual trail itself will launch on Friday 27 November, and carry on throughout the weekend of 28 and 29 November. During this time you can interact with the artists, learn about their making techniques, and buy their artwork direct. Many artists are still hoping to open their homes and studios to the public during the weekend of November 28-29, adhering to Government guidelines on Covid-19 safety. Some will show their work on the walls of public spaces such as cafes and bars

along Gloucester Road, while others will create displays in their windows. This means that you will be able to safely follow a walking trail, enjoying art displays and chat to artists or see artwork on your screen and interact with artists from the comfort of your home. North Bristol Artists are adapting their approach for this special trail. For instance, Toni Burrows has created amazing mosaics to use as images for her book The Mermaid and the Tower. Although Toni won't be able to open every floor of her incredibly mosaiced home you'll still be able to meet her and see the original mosaics used. Laura Robertson is a prolific artist, producing quirky images in every medium from oils to lino prints. Her work will be on display at Cafe Jackaloupe on Gloucester Road and hopefully she'll also be able to be there to chat about her work. Jenny Urquhart will appearing in person when she shows her

The North Bristol Art Trail website will give up to date information about which artists will be showing their work on the walking trails, so you can plan your route, and check whether an appointment time is required. In this difficult year it's

important to plan Christmas early to avoid queues, shop locally and support our artists and makers. The North Bristol Art Trail provides a perfect way to find unique beautiful gifts. It's also a chance to brighten up your home with some new art. Nothing beats wandering round the North Bristol Art Trail on a crisp November day but this year, with the virtual trail, you can still indulge your senses if it's lashing with rain!

St Peter’s Hospice cuts beds and jobs after lockdown causes £2m funds gap

ST Peter’s Hospice has had to cut beds, stop its day services and review staffing because of a funding crisis in the wake of Covid-19. The pandemic led to cancellation of major fundraising events and the temporary closure of the charity's shops, meaning it has a shortfall of £2 million this year. It says the next 12 months will be crucial and is appealing to the people of Bristol to dig deep and help it continue its vital work. Actor and comedian Stephen Merchant was welcomed to the inpatient unit in Brentry in October to announce the year-long ‘When It Matters Most’ fundraising campaign. He said: “I can’t imagine Bristol without St Peter’s. The difference they have made to my family and the families of tens of thousands of others is immense. “It is devastating to realise the enormity of the impact that Covid-19 has had, and that critical end of life care is threatened and might not be available in the future.” All St Peter’s Hospice’s services are provided free and they support around 3,000 patients and their families every year. Despite being a frontline service only 20 per cent of their funding comes from the NHS. Over £4 million of the hospice’s funding comes through their shops, fundraising events and donations. Although there has been a slow return of the shops and activities, income is down significantly. The hospice is reviewing all services and expenditure and has already temporarily closed five beds in the inpatient unit and closed their day services (annual running cost £516,139) for the medium term.

How you can help the hospice

Frank Noble, CEO of St Peter’s Hospice, said: “The hospice exists because of the generosity of our supporters and we have never needed you more. Our ability to help those at home, those in need of specialist care and those who need support through bereavement during these extraordinarily difficult times is diminishing as every week goes by. We are now at the point of reviewing

The next twelve months are critical. The hospice exists because of the imagination, generosity and compassion of the people of Bristol and beyond. If you can help now, it will make a huge difference when it matters most. If you are on social media, please share the hospice’s fundraising activities or give one a go yourself. Get in touch if you need our support A COLLABORATION of local charities has come together to form a Support Hub to help people over 50 cope with the impact of the coronavirus in Bristol. The Support Hub provides a range of different services including practical, social and emotional support, such as shopping and weekly social phone calls, as well as virtual activities that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Due to social distancing measures, we are conscious there is a risk that some people will feel lonely and socially isolated during the pandemic. We feel it is important to think about social opportunities to keep you connected whilst at home and as a group of charities, we are offering virtual activities like shared reading, art sessions, Tai-Chi classes and much more, which you can get involved in either online or over the phone. The pandemic has been an unsettling time, filled with stress and anxiety for many people. We would urge anyone over 50 who has a need for the services provided by the Support Hub to get in touch. Most of the services provided by the Support Hub are either free or low cost. The helpline for the Support Hub operates

n NEWS AVON Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) and Bristol Bears' Joe Joyce have unveiled a new community defibrillator. The device, crowdfunded by Simon Brookes, will be accessible from the front of the station in Southmead and usable by anyone in the local community. Passers-by need to call 999, 24 hours a day, and they will be given the access code by South Western Ambulance Service. The device and lockable safe cost £1,800 and was completely crowdfunded by Simon, while the installation was paid for by AF&RS. Joe Joyce, Bristol Bears lock, aka the King of Southmead, said: “It's great to be able to unveil such a life-saving bit of kit where I grew up. Having gone through CPR training last year with the Bears, I know just how important this is and how much of a difference this can make in life or death situations. "I know that this station is right in the heart of the Southmead community and it is great to see this collaboration work taking place.

King of Southmead Joe Joyce unveils lifesaving device funded by locals "I think Simon has done a fantastic job in crowdfunding and I hope to see many more across the area." Neil Liddington, risk reduction area manager for AF&RS, added: “Our stations are naturally situated in the most populated areas, providing ideal locations for the devices in the heart of communities. “This shows just how committed the service is to ensuring the local community is safe. Being able to offer that first aid option is key, but also being at the heart of the community. “We hope it is never needed, but if it is, we are happy to say it is there and accessible.” Simon Brookes has been involved in purchasing seven, and crowd-funding six, defibrillators around North West Bristol in the last year, including one being installed

at The Beehive pub in Wellington Hill West. Simon said: “I was a community first responder for the ambulance service for nine years and realise the importance of bystander CPR and access to urgent defibrillation. “I have made it my aim to spread 24-hour community public access defibrillators across the city and am already talking with groups in Southville and Stockwood to this aim. “I raise money through crowdfunding, accepting donations from those taught CPR free of charge, from local community groups and businesses. And if that doesn't reach the target - leafleting!” A spokesperson for South

Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “The more people equipped with the knowledge and confidence to administer CPR and the more defibrillators there are available, the more people we can save. “We encourage all businesses and workplaces to have defibrillators and CPR-trained people available to respond in an emergency situation.”

n HOME IMPROVEMENT

Tom Jackson, Commercial Lead

The importance of keeping your gutters clear

G

UTTERS aren’t something we spend a great deal of time thinking about but are a very important part of the house as they exist to protect your home from rainwater. During a storm the rain runs off the roof into the gutters and down the drainpipes into the drains below. By doing this, your windows, doors and foundations are all being protected from water damage. Because they play such a crucial role in protecting your home, it is essential that gutters are kept clear of any debris that will prevent them from working effectively. Experts recommend clearing your gutters twice a year – in both spring and autumn. You should consider doing it more frequently if your roof is directly beneath trees or you live in an area prone to storms. It is important to do this piece of home maintenance as not clearing your gutters can lead to problems such as slippery walkways, or roof, wall, window and door damage. If excess water is not being channelled into the drains by your gutters, it can end up sitting on walkways and driveways potentially

33

creating a slip hazard. The formation of algae can make paths slippery, and in winter, water turning to ice can also make surfaces difficult to walk on. If your gutters are blocked then the water sits against the edge of your roof and can damage both the surface and underlying materials. Walls, windows and doors are susceptible to warping and rotting if they get damp, as they were not designed to sustain prolonged and direct rainfall. All of these problems can be avoided by hiring someone to clean your gutters twice a year. If you have someone to regularly maintain your gutters they should be

straightforward to clear. If it is raining and water is running down the side of your house then your gutters are blocked and you need a professional to clear them quickly. If you notice leaking or sagging gutters, be sure to get them looked at as soon as possible. Our handyperson service is set up to help with exactly this kind of home maintenance, and we have been helping people with their homes for over 30 years. n MAYOR'S VIEW

Clean air begins at home

W

ELL before the pandemic, I spoke about our moral, ecological and legal duty to clean up Bristol’s air. Last month, we set out the next steps in our plan to deliver cleaner air for the city and to do so in a fair and just way which brings all parts of the city with us. We want you to give us your views at www.bristol.gov. uk/caz2020 before the consultation closes on Sunday 22 November. In recent months the council has taken steps to lock in the benefits that lockdown brought to our environment and air quality. Bringing forward major transport improvements – such as the closure of Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street to through traffic, and the pedestrianisation of the Old City – have allowed us to improve traffic flow, reroute polluting vehicles from areas with low air quality, and give priority to public transport, walking and cycling. Before lockdown, we were also well on our way to making public transport in our city even more environmentally sustainable. We have worked closely with Firstbus to introduce biogas-powered buses, which cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85%. We have also secured funding for businesses in Bristol to loan free electric vehicles, in addition to launching the region’s new

electric vehicle charging network (including a rapid charging station at Eastville Park). All this has allowed us to make big improvements in Bristol’s air quality. We are covering all bases, however, which is why we’d like to hear your views on our revised proposals for a Clean Air Zone. These include a charging zone for polluting commercial vehicles, but also charging private cars which don’t meet emissions standards set by the government. We have long warned that charging non-compliant private cars would have a disproportionate effect on our poorest households who are more likely to own older vehicles which emit more pollution. That is why we want to press ahead with our more radical plans of redirecting traffic forward to bring Bristol’s air quality to compliant levels without a charge for private vehicles. However, I want to stress that the retention of the benefits we saw during lockdown and the delivery of cleaner air in Bristol won’t come through the stroke of a pen in Whitehall, or solely from the efforts of the City Council. We all need to minimise our contribution to air pollution in the city. Changing our transport habits are a big part of that, but we can – and must – do more. Unlike the government, the World Health Organisation highlights how reducing particulate matter

The Mayor’s View Each month Bristol mayor Marvin Rees shares his views with Bishopston Voice

(PM) is crucial in order to cut premature death through pollution. For us in Bristol that means obeying the rules of the smoke control area that covers the whole city, not burning wood on an open fire, and recycling waste rather than burning it on a bonfire. Cleaning up the air in Bristol will require the whole city – all of us – to come together with a common purpose: to adjust the way we live to protect each other from pollution, particulates and toxic fumes.

n VINEYARD NEWS with INGRID BATES

Sun shines on our 2020 grape harvest WE gathered a small, socially distanced group of friends together to pick our grapes on October 15th. People joke that we always seem to have glorious sun for our harvest and we managed to strike it lucky again this year. Working within new Covid guidelines isn’t too difficult

when you’re outside and being out in the sun was a welcome relief to many of the pickers who’d been working from home. It was a great day with lots of lovely grapes! Even though it’s not December, harvest is a very definitive end to the year for people who grow things. It’s great to have closure and makes you reflect on all the things that have happened over the year – and what a year it has been! For us the virus never affected our outdoor work or our wine sales but meant that we had children at the vineyard all spring and summer as well as the occasional volunteer. Having a few more pairs of hands and being able to share ideas turned out to be a really good thing. The knock-on effect was an increased desire to shift from growing fiddly Pinot noir to the more naturally robust Regent and start taking bigger

steps toward sustainability in every area. We were already pretty sustainable but there’s always more that can be done. We lease the land we grow our vines on and all the events of 2020 helped us decide it was finally time to try and find a few acres to actually buy and own for ourselves. Easier said than done but we like a challenge! Because of the frost in May we’ll have a smaller harvest with all our grapes going toward our rosé rather than making sparkling wine. Luckily we have plenty of sparkling wine in reserve from previous years so are not worried. Our new sparkling red and white labels have arrived so we’re beginning to release these new wines for sale over the next few weeks. None of the usual Christmas markets are happening but we do offer free local delivery so just get in touch or visit one of our

local stockists if you want some. These include Grape&Grind, Bristol Cheesemonger, Two Belly, Bristol Vine, Bottles&Books, Source, Flip Food, Le Vignoble, The Mall Deli . hello@dunleavyvineyards. co.uk www.dunleavyvineyards.co.uk @DYvineyards (twitter) dunleavy vineyards (facebook & instagram)

n NATURE WATCH With Dawn Lawrence

T

HIS edition of Bishopston Voice comes out around Hallowe’en and I was wondering why we associate certain animals with spookiness. Bats, being nocturnal, have that air of mystery and menace that hangs around many animals of the night, but why spiders? Spider myths and legends are many and varied. In several cultures, including the Hopi of North America, a spider god, or goddess, created the world. There are several world tales of spiders saving a great leader and the lesson of a spider, that persevered to build a web against the odds, is said to have inspired a downhearted Robert the Bruce to carry on the fight and win independence for Scotland. Many cultures cast spiders as cunning tricksters, including the West African and Caribbean spider Anansi, hero of many tall tales, whilst the Romans put spiders on their coins because they associated them with wealth. We still call tiny members of the spider family Linyphiidae money spiders and if you find one about your person it is said to mean that you are coming into money. A quick trawl through spider

Intricate weaving: an orb web and a hammock web on a frosty morning Photo: Dawn Lawrence myth didn’t bring me any nearer to explaining the link between spiders and Hallowe’en. But it did bring me back to webs. Those money spiders are sheet, or hammock, web spinners. Unlike the glorious orb webs with their intricate symmetrical design, a hammock web is slung horizontally (see photo) and a scatter of light strands is woven haphazardly above it. An insect that blunders

into one of the upper strands falls into the sticky sheet below and is trapped. Another web design (and seven types are recognised in British spiders) is the radial web. The tube web spider is large and intimidating - it even has iridescent green fangs! It finds a suitable hole in a wall, lines it with silk and then builds outwards, making a kind of ruff around the hole. It then lays

down radiating lines of strong silk and when these are tripped the spider shoots out of its hole (surprisingly fast) and captures its prey. A new spider to Britain, called the feather legged lace-weaver, constructs a shabby version of an orb web, built of fuzzy fibres that act a bit like Velcro. It is also called the garden centre spider as that is where it first appeared, apparently imported on plants from the Netherlands. The spider is cleverly camouflaged as a piece of dead vegetation and its web looks similarly defunct. However, this spider has a further trick up its sleeve beyond mere camouflage (oh, and Velcro). In certain conditions webs can carry an electrostatic charge and the lace-weaver goes one step further. Using special hairs on its legs it combs its web, deliberately generating a negative charge. Flying insects tend to generate a positive charge by the action of their wings and the result is that the insect is attracted to the web! Velcro, camouflage and electricity in one web - no wonder so many cultures attribute cunning and inventiveness to spiders.

n NATURE

How you can help bring back more swifts Dave Peck, former teacher at Portway and Whitefield Fishponds, is a keen amateur naturalist and member of the Redland branch of the RSPB. He shares his tips with the Bishopston Voice to get more swifts nesting locally. THE screams of swifts are one of the delightful sounds of summer but, as with so many of our wild birds, swift numbers have been declining for decades. We know one of the key reasons for the decline: we maintain our buildings too well so there are fewer gaps and spaces in which swifts can nest. We can do something about this. There is a national campaign to make it a requirement for all new buildings to incorporate ‘swift bricks’. These are hollow nest box

Photo: RSPB

bricks. The link to the petition for this campaign is: https:// you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ save-our-swifts However, new buildings make up only a small proportion of potential nest sites so what can we do to make existing buildings swift-friendly? A web search gives companies that provide nest boxes for swifts (as well as other species). There are

also instructions for home-made and therefore cheaper alternatives. The swift boxes shown in the photograph were made during lockdown, the one on the right following the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) instructions and the other based on the design of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). Both were made using recycled wood (from pallets, an old bed

base and some skirting board), so the only cost was the screws! It looks as though we may have more lockdown and potential nest box making opportunities ahead, leaving plenty of time to fit them under our eaves before the swifts return in May. Both of my fitted boxes were occupied for the first time this year which certainly helped to lift the Covid gloom. Let’s get Bristol screaming!

Delight as Jack Taylor signs extended deal GLOUCESTERSHIRE Cricket’s T20 captain Jack Taylor has put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2022 season. Jack led Gloucestershire as captain to a first T20 Finals Day in 13 seasons, although his side missed out in the rain-affected event at Edgbaston, falling to a six-wicket semi-final defeat by Surrey. He said: “I am thrilled to extend my stay here. Gloucestershire is my home club and it’s a huge part of my life. “I’ve also loved the opportunity to captain in this year’s Vitality Blast. I’m looking forward to what this team can achieve over the next couple of years.” Head coach Richard Dawson added: “It’s fantastic news that Jack has extended his stay at Gloucestershire. He’s been an

important part of the changing room for a number of seasons and has shown solid leadership skills this season captaining the T20 side.” The older of the Taylor brothers, Jack made his debut for Gloucestershire over a decade ago and currently sits joint sixth on the club’s all-time

T20 appearances list. He is also seventh on the club’s all-time T20 run scorers list with 1058 runs at a strike rate of 144.14. This season, he has added 130 runs so far at an average of 26 while leading the team to seven group stage victories, securing a home quarter-final against Northants Steelbacks

which Gloucestershire dominated to win by seven wickets. With eight wins in 10 matches, Jack comfortably has the best win percentage among Gloucestershire’s 11 T20 captains since the competition was introduced. Jack is the second player to have signed a contract extension following this year’s top T20 run scorer Ian Cockbain, who also signed a two-year extension. “A few years ago, we might have hidden behind the fact that we were a young team but we have kept a lot of those core players and now we are the senior players,” Jack said. “We’ve got a great group now with more youngsters coming through so I‘m feeling positive about what the future will hold for us.”

MW Funeral Directors go the extra mile A BRISTOL funeral directors is going the extra mile to enable people to pay their respects while there are restrictions on attending funeral services due to Covid-19. Routes to cemeteries and crematoriums are being planned by MW Funeral Directors of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, so that those prevented from attending a service or selfisolating can pay their respects. Hearses are able to stop at significant points where family members live, social clubs or sports grounds with mourners able to socially distance while paying their respects, and often applauding. MW Funeral Directors cover the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield, planning and directing burials and cremations to the individual requirements of families. Ella Abbott, funeral director, said: “It seems certain that sadly the restriction of a maximum of 30 people at a funeral is going to be with us well into 2021. We have always arranged

funerals in a truly bespoke way, to allow for personalisation and to meet the needs of the family and friends of the person who has died. “It is proving very difficult for some families to decide who should come to the service and how it will be organised and we have been working with them to find ways to ensure that the whole funeral and service honours the person who has passed away. “One solution is webcasting of the service, which is now very common, but even that can feel lonely and remote to someone who was very close to an individual. “One solution we have found is to put some more time into the journey to the service and work with families so that there is a timed route, often with pauses and stopping places where people can stand at the roadside or in a special place – such as a sports club – and pay their respects. “It is proving very comforting for families and makes more of an event before then they go to

their laptop or computer to watch the service.” MW Funeral Directors say it is important to work alongside families and friends of the deceased to put together a memorial that will live on in the hearts of guests for many years and this should not be curbed by the current restrictions. The team have organised funerals themed for special interest groups, such as bikers, environmentalists or animal lovers and for those of all faiths and of none. Said Ella Abbott: “There is a lot of flexibility around funerals. Sometimes cost can be an issue for a family so we keep our basic packages for a funeral early in the day when crematorium fees are low at £1,995 and there are even options for unattended funerals. “But in these difficult days it seems to be more important than ever for families to mark the event in a memorable way and we work with them to ensure that happens despite all the restrictions we all now face.”

The time machine - a converted Police phone box - in the longrunning TV series Dr Who, is famed for being much bigger inside than it looks from outside. Martin explains: " the house, a Victorian terrace, has been extended to the rear and up into the loft, and the overall result is a house which is amazingly spacious inside!". There are four bedrooms, all of which can accommodate a double bed, a large living room with bifold doors onto a 50ft rear garden, a modern kitchen, a family bathroom of good size, and an en suite shower room. n VET'S ADVICE

Help your pet cope with stress of fireworks season

A

T this time of year, a pet that is affected by loud noises can be terrified of fireworks. This year we may have many more smaller homemade displays rather than the larger organised displays so the firework season may be less predictable than usual. How can you tell if your pet is stressed by fireworks? Some signs are obvious such as cowering and hiding behind furniture, excessive vocalisation and panting and pacing. However other signs can be less obvious such as reduced appetite, aggression, destruction of property messing in the house, shaking or trembling, excessive licking or grooming, shaking or trembling and clinging to owners. Traditionally vets have dispensed tranquilliser type medication to help pet cope at this time however there is now a shift to more natural products which can be given safely to any pet cat or dog and can be continued for the whole season as

needed. Natural remedies can have a variety of ingredients but key ingredients include L Tryptophan, GABA and L-Theanine, all of which have been shown to have a calming effect on dogs and cats. But beware that the supplement market is unregulated and we would strongly recommend that you source a reputable supply from a veterinary surgeon. Our recommendation at Animal Health Centre is a product called Nutracalm, suitable for both cats and dogs and has a rapid action of effect within 1 - 2 hours. It is not a prescription medicine and as such can be sold to anyone whether registered with the practice or not. Do call us to have a chat if you think your pet could benefit. Other ways to help your pet include making him a den in the centre of the house insulated for noise and light to help him feel safe. Avoid walking your dog after dark, burn up extra energy in the day to help him sleep through. Put the TV or

radio on loud and pull your curtains. Keep cats indoors with a litter tray. Check that microchip details are up to date in case your cat or dog runs off. And most importantly keep calm yourself, try not to react to the fireworks as your pet will pick up on any anxiety you may show. If you happen to have a young puppy still with his socialisation period, up to about 4 months of age, do let him see and hear the fireworks in a safe environment, make it a positive experience for him by feeding at the same time or carrying on as normal while the fireworks happen around. If you would like any more advice do please contact us at Animal Health Centre. Wishing you a peaceful, stress free and safe fireworks season. Nicky Bromhall MRCVS Animal Health Centre

It's more important than ever to protect against flu THE UK’s topmost human disease national risk remains a flu pandemic. New and emerging infectious diseases, i.e. Covid, was second. Why? Experts agree there is a high probability of another influenza pandemic occurring. It’s impossible to forecast exact timing. The World Health Organisation estimates that between 2 -7.4 million deaths may occur globally. Half of the UK population may become infected, with between 50,000 and 750,000 deaths that would otherwise not have occurred. You must have guessed where I am going now – yes, it is time to roll up and get the flu jab but with a sense of urgency and duty. Having your flu vaccination is also now an essential part of our fight against Covid-19. Having a spike in respiratory illness caused by influenza will bring everything to breaking point. We must never forget flu kills an average of 8,000 people every year in the UK. While we await a Covid-19 vaccine, and we do not yet know how the Covid-19 virus will react with other seasonal viruses that are

commonly around during autumn and winter. Some quick reminders: The jab cannot cause the flu. It takes up to 14 days after the jab to be fully protected; this explains the coincidence. Get in now. You need a flu vaccination every year as the antibodies that protect you from flu decline with time and flu strains can also change from year to year. Community Pharmacies, like Kellaway Pharmacy and GP Surgeries, all part of the NHS, use the same flu vaccines. You can get your free NHS vaccination from any of us; we also share information to update records. If you have an underlying health condition (such as chronic heart, diabetes, kidney, liver, or respiratory disease), pregnant, workers in Social Care/nursing home/hospice, paid and unpaid carers, household contacts of persons on the NHS shielded patient list or immuno-compromised persons and your close contact, hurry up and get your jab. We offer a Covid-secure, no appointments, walk-in service, but wherever you choose, the key message is, please do not delay getting protected. Call us on 0117 9246579 if you have any questions.

Winter warmth from the Listening Bench

FREE N HS FL U JA B S

IT’S getting chilly so the Listening Bench at St Alban’s Church is on the move. It can be found at the covered area at the side of St Alban’s Church Hall (Well’s Room entrance). The hours are changing to Friday, Saturday and Sunday 4 - 6pm. All are still very welcome for a socially distanced, confidential chat. Revd Emma Langley said: “Covid19 has shown us how isolated and lonely so many people are and the listening bench is a small response to that. We hope it will meet a real need but also draw attentiono the need for so many to find someone to talk to and to encourage us all to reach out to our neighbours in any way we can.”

n INSIDE OUT

Historical Wallpaper society There’s a niche for every conceivable thing, even wallpaper. Especially wallpaper! There are experts in Chinese wallpaper, English Heritage wallpaper, different pattern types, different fabrication techniques, types of ink and paint, the conservation of wallpaper. Within the wonderful world of wallpaper there is an expert for every detail and even more enthusiasts to match. The Wallpaper History Society brings many of these folk together both online and offline for events and exhibitions celebrating, exploring and educating about everything wallpaper, from the poisonous chemicals used in C18th and C19th prints to the history of fashions in design and depiction of animals on papers old and new. There is little more satisfying when renovating a property than peeling back layers of paper to find an interesting sheet of treasure closest to the plaster. When a swatch of it strips away in a decent enough size to preserve in a scrapbook of the house’s story, that’s pretty sweet too. What’s lurking beneath the top layer in your home?! To follow their latest discoveries and acquisitions follow the Wallpaper Historical Society on instagram @wallpaperhistsoc or visit their website www.wallpaperhistorysociety.org.uk Zoe Hewett is founder of Stylemongers Of Bristol interior design studio. www.stylemongersofbristol.co.uk
