ABSEILING adventurers have put Southmead Hospital on course to hit its fundraising target of £50,000. A magnificent £43.5K has been raised so far by 178 local people prepared to brave the height and step over the edge for their local hospital. Joining them on the weekend of 11 - 12 September was Bishopston Voice publisher, Emma Cooper, who faced the challenge of abseiling 100 feet down the side of Southmead Hospital with her teenage daughter, Izzy. Relaxing after her adrenalineboosting experience, Emma said: “What a rush! Scaling down the side of Southmead Hospital is probably not on everyone’s bucket list, but it should be. “Knowing that we are raising vital funds for our local hospital and showing our appreciation of the hard work throughout the pandemic was a good enough reason to step over the edge. “Thank you to the patient instructors, Southmead Charity team and all our wonderful sponsors who have helped

Help choose new mural for St Andrew's Park A NEW mural will be painted on the toilet block in St Andrew's Park in October by Bristol’s acclaimed street artist Alex Lucas, otherwise known as LucasAntics. The work has been commissioned by the Friends of St Andrew's Park (FOSAP) following an anonymous donation to the group. The beautiful design shows a hummingbird pollinating a giant flower and has been painted in four versions each featuring different colours. The final design will be chosen by a vote on FOSAP’s Facebook page - from a selection of different colour schemes – where people will be able to cast their vote. The announcement of the new artwork by Lucasantics has already met with universal approval and delight – including online comments like “love all her work, this is a beautiful scheme and design” and “what a great choice of local artist”. Alex will start painting her new design sometime in October – shortly after the wall has been prepared with the help of Bristol City Council. Once the design is completed it will be protected with anti-graffiti paint. The previous design was painted by street artist Minto and lasted 7 years before it became too vandalised to maintain. Martin Weitz from the FOSAP committee says: “We are really excited by this beautiful new art work which Alex Lucas has offered to paint in the park – she has a brilliant and distinctive style which will blend in with the landscape of the park perfectly.” Two of the possible designs are featured here – the other designs can be viewed on the Friends of St Andrews Park Facebook page. People can vote for their favourite design by going to the Friends of St Andrews park Facebook page in the last week of September. The vote is open until midnight on Sunday 3rd October.

Charity concert date A CHARITY-fundraising concert is being held on Saturday 16 Oct at St Andrew's Bowling Club. The band, "The Grateful Dad", are all Bishopston residents, and play an eclectic assortment of cover songs from the folk, country, jazz, rock, blues and pop genres. Arieh, Bill, John, Jonathan, Katy and Neil, will perform a number of new songs as well as some old favourites. A series of talented events in Bishopston Library A PROJECT launched by Friends of Bishopston Library is welcoming more young people into the Library this Autumn. A Series of Talented Events will explore how young people want to use the Library beyond books and a study space. This project invites young people local to Bishopston, Ashley Down, Horfield and St. Andrews to share ideas about how the space can be used in a more relevant and approachable way for people aged 17-23. The Library will host a series of workshops, events and activities based on ideas, interests and themes generated by young people and will lead up to a celebration that showcases the young team’s work in December. Ultimately the project aims to bring people together from the surrounding area in a gathering with food and music and experiment with different ways the Library can be used by young people. The project is currently assembling a small volunteer team of Ambassadors (aged 17-23) to be at the heart of the planning and promotion of events in November and December and to drive the project forward. Only with young voices can the project gather ideas and run a workshop series that truly is by and for young people.

Bristol youth climate strikes to return FOR the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the Bristol youth climate strikes were set to return to College Green on Friday 24 September at 11am. Following on from the 30,000 strong rally when Greta Thunberg visited the city in February 2020, Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate (BYS4C) is again calling on young people (and adults in solidarity) to walk out of their places of education and assemble outside City Hall. The event in Bristol is occurring alongside other climate strikes across the world, including Manchester, Cardiff, Oxford, and Glasgow in the UK. The group are focusing on the themes of time is running out, highlighting how nothing has changed since the last strike in terms of climate action, and intersectional climate justice, and how it needs to be in the centre of any response to the climate and ecological crisis. BYS4C has held 10 strikes in Bristol since February 2019, and has also recently joined protests against the expansion of Bristol Airport. BYS4C activist Torin, 16, said: “It is vital that we keep up the pressure on politicians, locally, nationally, and globally, to act on the climate and ecological crisis. Almost no

progress has been made since we last went on strike in February 2020, so we are again fighting for our futures. “We are still trying to stop airport

expansion, still campaigning for clean air, and most importantly still fighting for social, racial, and climate justice across the world.”

MBST Bristol: A real game changer MBST: an award-winning innovation designed to manage long-term injury, osteoarthritis and elite sports injuries MBST is a therapeutic adaptation of MRI used to treat osteoarthritis and soft tissue damage. Unlike an MRI, MBST doesn’t create an image but it does use the same energy to stimulate a James Scrimshaw and Jonathan Webb (Consultant Knee Surgeon) at Cura’s MBST Clinic in Westbury-on-Trym significant repair response in damaged tissue and joints. Here at Cura’s Westbury-on-Trym clinic, over 90% of the patients we’ve treated have improved levels of pain, joint mobility and stability. Cura’s patients range in age from 21 (generally with trauma or sports injuries) to those in their 80s. Many patients have osteoarthritic change in necks, backs, hips, knee or ankle joints. Most often, these patients are not yet ready for surgery but are suffering with mild to moderate stage of joint damage and some considerable pain. For this group, the results from MBST treatment really are extremely impressive.

This month, we speak with Danny who has recently completed a course of MBST at Cura Clinical Danny has been living with chronic back pain for the last 10 years. He found that working as a firefighter and a builder was becoming a real challenge, and he could no longer play rugby in his spare time. Most of Osteoarthritis

the day, his pain level was a steady 5 out of 10, but often would rise to a debilitating 8 out of 10, and sleep was sometimes difficult. Danny’s condition was caused by multiple disc bulges, along with some joint arthritis in his spine. Earlier this year, Danny met a friend who recommended that he should explore MBST with James Scrimshaw at Cura Clinical. The friend, who had undergone treatment for an arthritic shoulder had, like the majority of our MBST patients, responded well to the therapy. Last week, Danny had his six-week, post therapy assessment. In his own words, he’s “a whole lifetime away” from his chronic suffering and his pain score is reduced to a life-changing one out of 10. It’s still early days but it’s a great start to the healing process. Needless to say, we’re all delighted about his progress.

MBST isn’t just for patients with arthritis. Elite and professional sports people have also used the treatment to ensure a swift recovery from injury

Former professional boxer, Johnny Nelson, recently underwent MBST treatment at one of our associate clinics for neck pain and lower back damage. Johnny said, “I wish I’d known about this! If I’d had this treatment at the end of my career, it would have bought me another two or three years at the top level of my sport”. We also work with the Bristol Bears squad. Jack Targett, Head of Medical Logistics, commented, “We started using MBST to aid players’ recovery from injury and return them to performance. We’ve had great outcomes from using the MBST facilities at Cura Clinical for several team members”.

Young cancer survivor given a day to remember at Gloucestershire Cricket A SEVEN-year-old boy who endured more than 1,180 days of chemotherapy to overcome a rare type of blood cancer was given a day to remember at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club to celebrate him being given the all-clear. Cricket-mad Benjamin Smith, from Cheltenham, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in June 2017 at the age of three, and went on to face three-and-a-half years of daily cancer treatment. The grueling chemotherapy meant Benjamin was unable to do all the things a healthy three-yearold boy usually does, such as playing with friends, riding a bike, and enjoying family days out. But like his father, Matt Smith, who himself beat testicular cancer at the age of 25, Benjamin battled bravely to overcome ALL, a disease so rare it’s only found in around 2,000 people in the UK each year. Having spent several weeks in hospital and withstood 17 general aesthetic procedures, Benjamin finally finished his treatment in September 2020 during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and will soon celebrate being one year cancer free. To help make the occasion extra special, Gloucestershire CCC invited Benjamin and his family to be VIPs for the day at Bristol County Ground for the club’s Royal London One Day Cup fixture vs Essex, in August. Benjamin, his parents Matt and Suzanne and his older sister, Emilia, aged 10, were chaufferdriven to the ground by Bristol Audi, met with the first-team players pre-match and were able to watch the on-the-field action in the company of club mascot, Alfred the Gorilla. Matt Smith, a secondary school teacher, said the family enjoyed a special day at Gloucestershire CCC that was made so memorable because of “how much it made Benjamin smile”. “It was really overwhelming to receive so much support from the club, it was a really special day that we’re incredibly thankful for,” said Matt. “We could not be any more

grateful, Benjamin had a great time and we were able to see him smile like a little boy should. He loved meeting the mascot, he loved all of it. “We’re really proud of what Ben has achieved and what he’s overcome. He’s grown to become an amazing little boy and it has been quite overwhelming for myself and Suzanne to see how much support we have received.” Benjamin’s diagnosis came after his parents noticed he was struggling to recover from a simple ear infection and he started to suffer with frequent nose bleeds. After being rushed to hospital in Gloucester for blood test in June 2017, Benjamin and his parents were told he had ALL, and he was subsequently transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital the very next day to begin intense treatment against the aggressive cancer. While in Bristol for a twoweek hospital stay the family received support from the Young Lives vs Cancer charity who provided Matt and Suzanne with a ‘home from home’ in Bristol so that they could be close to their poorly son. The charity also helped to make Benjamin’s a day to remember at Gloucestershire CCC happen by making the club aware of Benjamin’s inspirational recovery. Matt added: “Our life got tipped upside down when Benjamin was diagnosed. It was unbelievable to deal with, we thought he couldn’t possibly have cancer at the age of three. You never expect your son to get cancer. “Benjamin had a huge part of his childhood taken away from him and as a family it disrupted

everything we did, it was hard on us all. We had to give him chemo at home, he had it every day for three-and-a-half years. “To go from that to having so much amazing support from everyone has been amazing. We are so thankful for all of it.” As well as their VIP experience with Gloucestershire CCC, Matt and Suzanne were also gifted a one night stay and

a meal by DoubleTree by Hilton, the club’s hotel partner. Pete Lamb, GCCC’s Community Engagement Officer, said: “As soon as we heard about Benjamin’s story, we wanted to make sure we did something that made him and his family feel really special. Our charity partner, Young Lives vs Cancer, supports a variety of incredible people on some really difficult journeys and we’re delighted that we were able to play a small part in this. Everyone at the club is looking forward to seeing them again at Bristol County Ground in the near future.” While needing to attend monthly hospital check-ups, Benjamin is now well on the way to making a full recovery and has returned to school full-time. He’s also enjoying spending time playing cricket as part of the ECB’s All Stars Cricket programme.

nN EWS FROM OUR MP

Let's welcome Afghan families Helping people escape persecution in Afghanistan MANY of you have written to me about the horrific situation in Afghanistan. My team and I are working seven days a week trying to help people escape persecution by the Taliban. The stories we are hearing are extremely distressing: relatives tortured or murdered, families separated, and children lost as people run for their lives. We are doing everything we can to get people out. This includes UK citizens living in Bristol West and their relatives now trapped in this oppressive regime. Many of them are terrified of persecution for helping British forces over the last 20 years. Others fear for their lives because they were trying to build a fair democratic society, as journalists, members of the Afghan parliament or charity workers. The government was slow to act when this situation became

a crisis. My team and I will keep pushing them to do more. For those Afghans who have managed to make it to the UK, life is far from easy. I am pushing ministers for better support for their new lives here. Around 150 Afghan families are settling in Bristol. I know you will give these new neighbours the warm welcome that Bristol is famous for. Cost of living going up rapidly The costs of food and energy are rising rapidly and meanwhile the Tories keep raising the taxes which hurt people on the lowest pay the most. I raised this in Business Questions, the weekly session where I question my opposite number, Jacob Rees-Mogg, on the government agenda. The Tories’ Universal Credit cut will mean millions of households lose over £1,000 a year, including more than 11,000 people here in Bristol West. On top of this, an

increase to National Insurance will also cost working people hundreds of pounds a year. Although the government says it will go towards social care, local authorities like Bristol City Council (that pay for social care) won’t see a penny for several years, if ever. The need to fix social care is urgent. But this should not happen at the expense of people on the lowest incomes. There are other ways of raising this money, including taxes on the sales of financial assets, stocks and shares. Unfortunately, while we have a Tory government, such progressive policies will never happen. Why does it mean to be a feminist MP and why does it matter? This was the subject of a speech I gave at the philosophy festival ‘How The Light Gets In’. It’s better for men and women when there is a diversity of views and experiences in Parliament. I

Thangam Debbonaire writes for the Voice was only the 408th woman ever to be a UK MP and we are still a long way from being a Parliament which truly represents the country. The things I do to try to change this include: • Be a voice for women who aren’t being heard • Model gender equality • Help more women get into politics • Campaign on policies such as domestic violence or the pensions gap. The full transcript of my speech is on my blog.

New parish priest for St Bonaventure’s BISHOP Declan has appointed Monsignor Bernard Massey to be Parish Priest at St Bon’s from the beginning of September. Mgr Bernard is one of Bishop Declan’s Vicar Generals - a Vicar General assists the bishop in his executive work. Mgr Bernard comes with many years’ experience and some people may know him from his time at Sacred Heart’s Parish in Westbury-on-Trym. In a statement Mgr Bernard said: “I first came to live in Bristol 45 years ago. This was before I became a priest and I lived in Coombe Dingle, then in Stoke Gifford and finally in Long Ashton before going away to train for the Priesthood. it’s a great joy to be back home again and to be working with both the Catholic community and the wider community in this area. “I’m delighted that I am coming to a well-established and vibrant parish community but I’m also pleased that I will be involved with the excellent St Bonaventure‘s Primary School which is my next door neighbour. “My hobbies are golf (which I play badly but enjoy), watching Bristol Bears ( I’ve just got my season ticket) and I support Manchester United because I was born and brought up six miles from the ground so they were my local team. “Bishopston has a reputation for being a somewhat independent part of the city, but also a reputation for being a very strong community as well. I’m looking forward to living and working in this vibrant area over the coming years.”

North Bristol Art Trail celebrates 20 successful years

NORTH Bristol Artists will celebrate their 20th art trail this November. The North Bristol Art Trail has launched the career of many artists and is a hugely popular free community event. Some of the originators of the trail share their memories of how it all began. Cath Read and Sarah Cowper, who were then strangers, realised that, by coincidence, they were independently holding exhibitions of their art in neighbouring houses in St Andrews on the same weekend in 1999. The following year they decided to show together and invited six other artists to join them. Many founding artists met each other by word of mouth, often while picking up their children in local school playgrounds. In 2001 they placed an advertisement in a local community magazine, Points North, inviting other artists to consider showing together. Thus, the first North Bristol Art Trail was born, driven by a sense of community and a need for artists

On the first North Bristol Art Trail 28 artists took partl, showing their work in seven homes plus a group show at Café Unlimited (which used to be next to Bishopston Hardware) giving away free croissants and coffee. During another trail people were offered horse and cart rides on the streets round St Andrews Park! Early trails had queues snaking down the street waiting to visit exhibition venues and by the 3rd year there was a huge surge in the number of local artists wishing to take part. Nowadays more than 100 artists exhibit work in over 50 venues and thousands of visitors look forward to visiting the trail. A successful application to the Bristol City Council Arts Festival Fund helped develop the trail to reach a wide demographic and artists collaborated to offer educational experiences and promote arts and artists within the community. Art projects were run in Sefton Park and Bishop Road schools, including a fashion

The North Bristol Artists went on to hold an annual schools art exhibition in St Andrews Park. They also exhibited artwork from Horfield Prison, and continue

This section of Gloucester Road (Glos Rd Central) is now seen as a permanent destination for local art. Meanwhile the North Bristol Artists website showcases all the artists and the wide range of artwork on offer from paintings and prints to jewellery, photography and ceramics. Sarah Cowper says: “It’s wonderful that so many artists in our area can make a living through their art. The local community, businesses and magazines have made this

possible over all these years. Lockdown last year meant that artists were only able to display work outside. This year artists plan to open their homes and studios once again and welcome visitors to a safe and enjoyable trail. Many venues will hold a preview night on Friday evening or refreshments during the trail. You’ll be able to pick up trail maps at a number of venues throughout Bristol – check our website for details – or just look at the online map and artist listings. Up to date information will also be offered via Facebook and Instagram. “The trail has always been the last weekend of November and trail supporters come whatever the weather – including blizzards and downpours! It’s a fantastic way to pick up unusual Christmas gifts or something original for your home, while chatting to artists or bumping into friends and neighbours. North Bristol Artists thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you on November 27th – 28th!” To find out more see: www. northbristolartists.org.uk

Gloucestershire Cricket launches programme YOUNG black people in Bristol will be given the chance to become professional cricketers thanks to a new partnership between Gloucestershire Cricket, Royal London and ACE – an independent charity set up to tackle a decline in involvement in English cricket from members of the black community. The African Caribbean Engagement programme (ACE), is expanding to its third city, Bristol, after securing £100,000 in funding from Royal London. ACE was first launched by Surrey County Cricket Club in January 2020 in response to a decline of black British professional players by 75% in recent years. By providing talent pathways for young black players through quality coaching sessions, trials were held for 70 young boys and girls at the Kia Oval in early 2020, resulting in the awarding of 25 cricket scholarships with Surrey CCC.

Through their partnership with the ECB, Royal London has pledged to help ‘level the playing field’ by donating £100,000 to the ACE programme over the next two years. Susie Logan, Royal London’s Group Chief Marketing Officer, said: “We’re immensely proud

to be supporting the ACE Programme and helping them to expand into Bristol by becoming a Regional Partner. We are excited to launch the programme in Bristol and looking forward to working closely with ACE and Gloucestershire Cricket over the coming years. The opportunities

this will generate for young people from black communities will be invaluable both on and off the pitch.” Gloucestershire Cricket’s association with ACE was officially launched on Thursday 16 September, when England Women took on New Zealand for a One Day International match at Bristol County Ground. GCB have appointed Theo Gordon as Development Officer, who will oversee the delivery of the ACE initiative across the Bristol area. Under Theo’s lead, supported by GCB, around 30 schools across the city, including St Barnabas Primary School, St Werburgh's Primary, Cabot Primary, and Air Balloon Primary will be a part of ACE’s grassroots cricket programmes in each academic year. At least 400 young black cricketers will benefit from development and performance opportunities thanks to support from a

to inspire young black players into the game full-time officer and a team of support staff. Theo says: “We have a cluster of schools within the local community which have at least 35 per cent black children and the aim is to give them some free sessions of cricket, an introduction of what the sport is and how much fun it can be. Then hopefully, we’ll bring them into the community hub where there will be extra sessions. “We need to create the excitement of cricket again with the one days and the T20s. I think it’s a sport for all and that’s where it differs from football, where you are either good at it or not. No matter what level you are at in cricket, people will take time out to coach you.” Gloucestershire Cricket has become the third county to link up with ACE after Warwickshire County Cricket Club signed up to the programme for 2021 – and will work alongside the ECB and Gloucestershire Cricket Board to identify potential future stars of English cricket. ACE, whose chair is Ebony Rainford-Brent, the first black woman to play for England, became an independent charity in late 2020 after receiving £540,000 in funding from Sport England and a grant from the ECB. That financial support has allowed ACE to trial 200 young black people so far, hand out a total of 65 scholarships and launch its own ACE academy. Mark Alleyne, Gloucestershire Cricket’s most decorated player and who is now an assistant coach at the club, became the

“The aim is to reignite the passion to play the game in the city; the ACE programme has a real opportunity to capture young kids and their parents to encourage them to come and play. We want families and young cricketers to enjoy playing cricket and it would be great if we could increase the catchment of players the club can select from in the county.” During the interval of the Royal London x ACE One Day International between England and New Zealand, 40 ‘Dynamo’ cricketers from Bristol West Indian Phoenix CC played cricket on the outfield in front of a packed Bristol County Ground. third black person to coach an English first-class cricket team in 2004 when he took on the role of head coach. He made almost 750 appearances for Gloucestershire Cricket across all forms and captained the club to seven limited-overs titles, as well as a County Championship promotion, between 1999 and 2004. Mark said: “We want to tap into the catchment of young black cricketers in Bristol through the programme, and then target those who have not aspired to play the game for reasons such as a lack of representation. We are trying to tackle that and move forward, which is a positive thing.

Director of England Women’s Cricket, added: “We are extremely proud to be supporting the ACE Programme and are excited by this new partnership with Royal London and Gloucestershire Cricket on the back of a successful launch in Birmingham earlier this summer. “These partnerships have the potential to change young people’s lives. With more opportunities and access to the game, more young people from Black communities will have the chance to reach their potential which is critical as we progress on our journey to ensure that cricket is a game for everyone.”

Montpelier High School in Bristol celebrates new name MONTPELIER High School in Bristol has celebrated its first day with all students from all year groups in school for the first time since its official rebrand over the summer. Livestreamed to every classroom and in the presence of a small handful of guests who had contributed to the consultation process, principal Kerry McCullagh proudly welcomed everyone to the newly named Montpelier High School. Head Student, Alice Farrington, acknowledged the pivotal role played by students who had used the power of their own voices to influence change, developing and delivering a transparent and inclusive consultation last year. She explained that 130 students had volunteered to help develop and facilitate the consultation, with 66 joining a variety of working

parties to drive forward the process. In designing an effective framework for the open consultation, students interviewed their peers and teachers, alumni, Bristol City Council representatives, a local MP, members of the local governing body, Venturers Trust board members and sponsors; and members of the local community. A handful of these individuals attended the small launch event, with Alice citing some of their suggestions that had helped shape the consultation. She thanked Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor, whose three daughters were alumni of the school. Alice said that Ms Craig had urged the students to explore the school’s values on their journey to create a new founding story that the

community could feel proud of. Alice said that David Watson OBE, CEO of Venturers Trust, had reminded students that the process was important, not just the outcome; Gillian Camm, former Chair of Governors for the school and the current leader of the Society of Merchant

Venturers, had advised students to design a consultation that was deliberative, democratic, inclusive and informed. A group of Montpelier High School students then proudly unveiled a striking mural that has transformed the school’s high-ceilinged entrance hall into

a visual narrative of the namechange journey. Kerry McCullagh thanked local designer Suffia Khanan for designing the school’s new emblem and local artist Danny Jenkins for creating such a powerful mural.

Ms McCullagh explained how the name change was the outcome of a well thoughtthrough and inclusive process, where students had learnt the importance of hearing and respecting other people’s views,

even when they differ from their own. She said that the school’s new identity now reflects its inclusive and diverse community: “More than half our 940 students come from a minority ethnic group

17 and more than 30 languages are spoken here. Our students benefit enormously from the wide range of perspectives in every classroom. Following a public consultation, staff and students voted to change the name of our school and the overall process has enabled us to experience democracy firsthand, as well as learning some important lessons from history that will help us all to shape a brighter future. “Montpelier High School is determined to remain a highly active part of the wider movement for change, championing diversity and inclusion, leading on and contributing to discussions and initiatives that will change our city and our world for the better.” Sophia Bailey, a Year 12 student who played a key role in the consultation process, also spoke at the event, telling her peers: “We are more than Montpelier High School. We are unique individuals that are part of this amazing journey. We are shaped by the past and we are ready for the future."

Trinity Academy's £25m new buildings CATHEDRAL Schools Trust is delighted to announce that the £25million permanent building for Trinity Academy in north Bristol has now been completed. The new building was unveiled to Trinity Academy students on September 8, marking a significant moment in the school’s history, for families across Bristol and the community within Lockleaze. The school has been in temporary accommodation since it opened in 2019 and will now benefit from a brand new building reflecting the school’s specialism in music and the performing arts. The state of the art facilities include a magnificent 570 seater concert hall, fully equipped with professional sound and lighting systems and demountable staging; as well as a recital room, dance and drama studios, and music practice rooms. In addition the school has a large indoor sports hall and all

weather sports pitches on the site. The new school building will create a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits, not just for students but also for Lockleaze and for the wider

community. The school’s aim is for the site to be used extensively by local, regional and national arts organisations, musical ensembles and sports clubs. The school has been heavily oversubscribed since opening

and will continue to grow year-on-year with an eventual capacity of 1,220 students – 180 students per year group as well as a sixth form provision. The permanent building is located on a shared campus with Stoke Park Primary School which is a feeder school for the secondary school. Eiron Bailey, Trinity Academy Headteacher said: “Our students receive an outstanding education at Trinity Academy and now we have access to this beautifully designed and stunningly equipped new building, we know we can deliver our mission of providing a world class school for the families of north Bristol.” Neil Blundell, Executive Principal of CST said: “We are all so happy to see the completion of this project which has been a key part of our strategy for the last five years. We hope the new school will provide world class education, arts and community facilities for Bristol and support the need for secondary places.”

FHS races ahead with sustainability ideas FAIRFIELD High School Student Eco Team have been busy devising a range of actions students and staff can take to help the environment. The Eco Team have been collaborating with representatives of the charities Sustrans and Living Streets since November 2020 to encourage people in their school community to use more environmentally friendly ways to travel such as cycling and walking. Actions taken include: • Running a survey to see how people travel to school, and how they would like to travel to school. • Creating a social media competition where people posted photos they had taken on walks. Photos were posted tagging #activeFHS and @ec0team, and were entered into a £15 voucher prize draw. Every fortnight there was a different theme for photos, such as shadows or graffiti. • Raising awareness of the benefits of walking, and giving advice to students, especially to boys, on how to make the streets less threatening for women and girls. • Providing sessions for people to have their bikes checked over. • Encouraging people to cycle by holding

prize draws to enter when bikes are locked up at school. • Finding areas of walking infrastructure that need to be improved, and collating a document of photos, issues, and locations to send to the council. Nick Lewis, Principal comments: “I am

n EDUCATION A NEW five year research programme targeting high-grade childhood brain tumours has been announced. Over £700,000 of funding for the project is from Children with Cancer UK, alongside charity co-funders Blue Skye Thinking and Little Hero with the aim of combating medulloblastoma (MB), the most common highgrade brain tumour in children. Little Hero charity was formed after six-year-old Will Rainsbury from Westbury Park, pictured, died from a brain tumour. The little boy fought a courageous nine-month battle against brain cancer, enduring radiotherapy sessions, chemotherapy and surgery. His parents, John and Lee-Ann, raised support from the local community with a series of fundraising events, including a Walk for Will undertaken by the families and teachers at Westbury Park School. The INSTINCT-MB research project, led by Newcastle University, supported by UCL Institute of Child Health and The Institute of Cancer Research,

October, 2021

Study aims for better treatment of childhood brain tumours will aim to develop better and more effective treatments for medulloblastoma, a disease which results in approximately 30% of childhood sufferers dying. High-risk paediatric brain tumours are the leading cause of childhood cancer death and sadly, many children who do survive brain tumours are often left with severe, life-limiting disabilities as a result of the tumour and the aggressive treatments that are needed to save their lives. Commenting on the research, Professor Steve Clifford, Principal Investigator of the INSTINCT network said: “We urgently need all-new treatment approaches for childhood cancer types with the poorest prognosis. By bringing together the essential network of worldleading experts necessary

to develop such approaches targeted specifically against tumour biology and bring them to the clinic, we aim to bring about a step-change in the treatment and outlook for these patients. Children with Cancer UK has a long-standing commitment to fund brain tumour research to accelerate scientific discoveries to clinical translation of new treatments and better outcomes for children. Since 2013, the charity has funded almost £1.5 million towards the original INSTINCT programme led by Professor Clifford. Speaking on behalf of Little Hero, John Rainsbury, Trustee and dad to Will said: “Will underwent the UK’s ‘Gold Standard’ treatment for high risk Medulloblastoma. Unfortunately for him and a lot of others

with Group 3 disease, it can prove surprisingly ineffective. Currently, there are simply no alternatives children in this high risk group can try. This programme provides real hope of progress for future generations of patients. I wish Steve and his team the best of luck!”

Steph McNally, Club Chair writes: IT'S been a tough year for grassroots sports. Like many other community groups up and down the country, we’ve had to adapt to survive and find new ways to keep our members fit, healthy and engaged. The commitment of our coaches and young swimmers during lockdown was nothing short of staggering, dialling in week after week for strength and conditioning, psychology, nutrition and even yoga sessions; the community spirit was alive and strong. But when April finally rolled around, we were delighted to see the back of the zoom sessions and embrace the water once again. Now we’re back in our chlorinated happy place, we’ve enjoyed getting back to racing. The Swim England Level X racing series and club time trials we hosted in June gave all our swimmers the chance to work towards new PBs and qualifying times for the 2021-2022 competitive year.

We’ve seen a healthy intake of new members during 2021, from our learn to swim school right up to our ever growing Masters squad and are thrilled to have Bishopston as one of our most popular catchment areas. As a North Bristol club we train at multiple venues across the district, including Winterbourne and Horfield however, we count Filton as our home pool and are looking forward to seeing the site grow under new management, Active Nation. We’ve also teamed up with Soundwell Swimming Club who cover a large part of East Bristol to create the North Bristol Network.

The aim of the network is to do something we feel is currently missing in Bristol; create a more cohesive and collaborative approach to swimming. By sharing our resources, knowledge and passion for swimming we hope to unite and inspire our young athletes and create pathways for development that everyone can benefit from. Looking ahead to 2022 we’ve got a lot to be excited about. We hope to welcome the return of county, regional and national competitions, something our squads have been missing a lot this year. And as a club we’ve got a big birthday coming up as Bristol North turns 100, making us the oldest and most established club in Bristol. We have lots of plans in the works to mark this very special year and we hope our friends in Bishopston will help us celebrate in style! If you’re looking for a local, friendly and competitive swimming club then we’d love to hear from you. We welcome swimmers of all ages, from 4 years old right up to Masters (18+) and offer a wealth of coaching knowledge, expertise and guidance along with excellent social events (when permitted!). Cheers! Wine crowdfunder launched

realised that leasing land was the only option open to her at that stage if she wanted to realise her dream of becoming a wine producer. Once she had found some land to rent, she planted 3,000 vines and tended them for three years before they started to produce grapes. Many years down the line and after a lot of hard work, demand for the wines has rocketed and Dunleavy need to grow more grapes. Ingrid says: “The plan is to buy a small field, very close to the

city, to give our business a long term base where it’s easier for people to engage with what we’re doing. We love trying new things and want to grow exciting new grape varieties without the use of chemicals. We want our vineyard to be a real haven for wildlife. Our small leased field has given us a great start but there’s so much more we’d like to do. “We’re raising £55,000 to buy some land and have created an amazing range of rewards people can choose from as part of our

crowdfunding campaign. These rewards range from vineyard tours, totally unique discount cards for local Dunleavy stockists as well as tickets for a combined beer and wine tasting with Wiper&True and Left Handed Giant Brewing. Finally, we’ve also created some amazing, limited edition photo labels featuring the work of celebrated Bristol based photographer Martin Parr. Martin's work has never been used on a wine label before so we’re very proud to be the first ones to do it!” To find out more about the campaign please sign up to the Dunleavy Vineyards newsletter at www.dunleavyvineyards. co.uk or follow them on twitter, facebook or Instagram (see social media handles on Dunleavy Wine Blog, p37). Crowdfunding relies on people spreading the word amongst their friends and family any ‘shares’ will have a big impact as well.

DUNLEAVY Vineyards are launching a crowdfunding campaign to buy a small field on the outskirts of the city. Established by Bristol resident Ingrid Bates around 13 years ago, Dunleavy vineyards have become one of the great success stories of the Bristol Food and Drink scene. Despite being a relatively small set-up, they make and sell thousands of bottles of still rose, sparkling white and sparkling red wine every year. Rather than focussing on ‘direct from vineyard’ sales, Dunleavy wines are sold through a host of independent shops and Michelin starred restaurants in Bristol, Bath and London. The wines are multi-award winning with their unusual sparkling reds recently winning gold for ‘Taste of the West’ and Silver in the IEWA wine awards. Ingrid set the vineyard up when she was in her 20s. With high prices and demand for land around the city, she quickly

Apple Day market jam packed with fruit trees and produce

APPLE Day is approaching and it’s usually one of the largest and liveliest public events at Horfield Organic Community Orchard (HOCO). The orchard relies on public events to raise essential funds and the cancellation of two events earlier this year, January’s Wassail and June’s Summer Open Day, has hit funds hard. As we heard into the winter months with high numbers of Covid cases in Bristol at the start of the school year, HOCO members feel it isn’t wise to organise a huge event for hundreds of people at this time. Instead, they are planning an Apple Day Market on Sunday 17 October. This will be similar to last year’s market when orders were placed in advance and collected on the day. All fruit trees and plants have been raised locally. Small batches of homemade preserves are jam-packed with fruits from the orchard. Local honey and herbal body care products are available in limited quantities. Pre-ordering is strongly recommended. A selection of produce and products will also be for sale on the day, including one-off green woodworking made with fruitwood from the orchard. Identifying mystery apples is another popular Apple Day activity. The Apple Tree Lady is offering to do this for a donation to HOCO of £5 for each variety (see the HOCO website for more information).

“It’s not a science,” says Orchard Learning co-ordinator, Shannon Smith. “I have seen hundreds of different kinds of apples over the years, and I love the challenge of solving the mystery. It’s fruitful fun - and all in a good cause!”

Details may change due to events beyond our control. Please contact HOCO at the website www.community-orchard.org.uk to make sure you get up-to-date information about the market or call 0117 373 1587.

Sale of handmade rugs from the Gambia KATH Mayall from Bishopston has been travelling to The Gambia during the winter months for many years, spending time with local men and women making colourful rag rugs. She teaches them to make colourful rag rugs using local materials, which are mostly free and recycled and the proceeds from the sale of these rugs all go back to the people who make them. Kath says: “We use hessian potato bags for the base of the rug and off-cuts from the many tailors shops who would otherwise be throwing these pieces away. “Many different people have made fabulous rugs since the project started and I have helped to sell them on their behalf. All the profits go back to the people who make them and over the years the quality of their workmanship has got better and better and they make wonderful designs.

One of the completed rugs for sale “Initially I thought it was something that I could do when I was spending time there during

the winter. I had the support of a man who makes the rug tools and he has given me a generous

discount in return for photos of the rugs for his website. I supply the new student with a rug tool, a pair of scissors and a thick needle and, of course, my time. We have had great fun over the years and I have many stories to tell about these creative people who are eager to learn something new.” Kath was unable to go to the Gambia to continue the project during the winter of 2020/21 due to the pandemic but she had four new students just before she left in March 2020. Kath adds: “I hope that I will see these women again during the coming winter and would love to see what they have created during my absence.” In the meantime, Kath still has a few rugs left from her return in March 2020, and would love to be able to sell them. n FROM YOUR COUNCILLORS In Bishopston this month... After a busy summer we are settling into the challenges of our first Autumn as councillors. Our surgeries, meeting with residents and email exchanges has prompted us into action over some of the more challenging issues for the ward. We know that parking is a big topic, and at Members Forum during the first week of September, Emma asked the Mayor about the possibilities of getting Residents Parking Zones extended into Bishopston. While the Mayor said he didn’t agree with them, Emma is continuing to press him on this

matter to help find solutions to stop the area from being used by ‘park and ride’ motorists. With the introduction of the Clean Air Zone, and the new Ashley Down Station in 2022, we know a solution must be found. If you want to give us your views on this, then do get in touch. Now the children are going back to school, the issue of idling, and poor school drop-off practices have been brought to our attention. Parents have been in touch with concern that idling outside of schools is

very damaging to the health of children, as well as contributing to air pollution in the area. We are working with local parent groups and schools to find ways to stop this practice and raise awareness of the issue. We also want to encourage parents, wherever possible, to use active travel methods to get their children to school. If you would like to be involved in this campaign, then please get in touch. We are also working with councillors in other wards to find ways to bring Liveable ‘low traffic’ neighbourhoods to the area, which would have the combined effects of curbing rat running in residential streets, tackling bad parking, and

hopefully making the area greener and more attractive. We would love to hear your views on this! We are still holding our surgery every 1st Friday of the month at The Ardagh; so do come along and say hello.

In Redland this month... Cross Party success We’ve been very busy since the new 24-strong Green Group was formed after the local elections. In the first standard full Council meeting since the election Greens scored two major successes through cross party working. First, by working with the Conservative group, we amended and passed a motion calling on the Mayor to adopt stronger planning policies to protect Bristol’s vital green spaces. We made sure their initial proposal had more teeth and would be recommended into the local plan which is under revision. Labour members abstained but it passed with the support of Conservative and Lib Dem councillors. Next, a Green motion we had worked on with the Labour group, setting zero carbon energy standards for new buildings to help Bristol reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change, was passed unanimously. This sets a higher standard than new revised building regulations in the local plan and saves new buildings from needing to be upgraded in the near future to save energy and cut carbon. Both of these motions will help Bristol to adopt better planning policies by 2023

and when adopted in the plan will strengthen the negotiations with developers. Only policies in the local plan [or nation policies] can be used to press for conditions that must be followed by developers when planning committees are deciding on their proposals. Mayor opposes parking schemes

approach can also be trialled in other neighbourhoods including our own on an experimental basis in response to many requests from residents for improvements to local streets. We reported in February how we did propose a Green Budget Amendment to fund such measures but it was blocked by Labour.

In an interesting development the Mayor recently told one of our colleagues that he opposes residents parking schemes, saying they create car dependency (he used to say they must have ‘overwhelming support’ but didn’t say whether car dependency for residents or commuters matters more). He said he supports Low traffic neighbourhoods instead. We think the two approaches are complementary, since street improvements like planters, cycle storage hangars, seating, play areas, and improved pedestrian crossings plus barriers to ratrunning vehicles also tend to take up parking spaces. We have been told that after much discussion of the concept the council intends to pilot two low traffic neighbourhoods in the current term of office, one in east Bristol. We’re trying to get better information on whether this

Surface dressing of roads causes problems We reported last month on the many complaints we passed to the Council about the tar and loose chipping treatment of many local roads in May. We’re still waiting for the final couple of road markings to be reinstated as we write. Now, in answer to a question to the Mayor from Martin, we have been assured that there will be more effort to manage contractors closely in future. A new contract is being put in place and the details and timing of reinstatement works will be managed better. We don’t think a full risk assessment was carried out or adequate measures to stop rogue parking. We don’t think the belated location of some ‘no parking’ cones was adequate to prevent the obstruction of the Southmead Quietway or dangerous corners.

Cranbrook Road crossing delay – but coming soon at last! There’s been painfully slow progress with work on this crossing, originally funded in November 2019 after a long residents’ campaign to create a safe route to school across this dangerous crossing by Cairns Rd. Officers have been preparing designs to consult with residents and we just heard they plan to start a consultation of the designs. To help ensure adequate funding we were delighted when the local Area Committee of councillors (which allocates budget from developers’ funds to the community) provided an additional £10,000 leeway over the budget. This was in addition to the £40,000 already allocated. The plans involve a build out at each side, an island refuge in the road, and double yellow lines to protect corners. As soon as we know consultation dates we shall let residents know. Bristol 1904 Arts Society painting exhibition THE Bristol 1904 Arts Society, is an inclusive visual and performing arts organisation promoting culture, friendship, artistic and hobbyinterest activities, with links to local arts organisations. Founded in 1904 as Bristol Savages, their artistic roots run deep into Bristol’s creative history. In 2020 they rebranded themselves with a new name and new activities, more accurately portraying their current interests, as well as the enduring ones of painting, music, magic, poetry, storytelling and fellowship, progressing from an all-male society to an open, diverse, inclusive and welcoming one. They encourage new membership, with artistic or musical talents, or none! Guests of members are very welcome. They meet on Wednesday evenings in their iconic hall and exhibition space built in the style of an old Tithe Barn adjacent to The Red Lodge on Park Row Bristol, for evenings of entertainment and conviviality. They also have birdwatching, walking, photography, classic car groups and a chorus and put on informal music and creative events at other times throughout the year. Their major artistic event, open to the public and always well attended, is the 110th Annual Paintings Exhibition running from 23 30 October and showing work by members who are outstanding local artists. Members who are pianists and jazz musicians will be entertaining visitors during the Exhibition. • Pictures copyright of the Bristol 1904 Arts Society

n NEWS A NEW book by local author, Peter Cullimore, explores the stories of 18th century Quakers who defied the prejudice against them as religious dissenters to become some of the city’s most prominent and successful doctors. Pills, Shocks & Jabs - the Remarkable Dissenting Doctors of Georgian Bristol has a topical slant, drawing parallels between the smallpox pandemic of the 1700s, which was halted by the first ever vaccine, and the modern struggle against Covid. The book is a stand-alone follow-up to Peter’s first book Saints, Crooks & Slavers about the history of his home in Montpelier. As a former health correspondent at ITV Wales, Peter felt drawn to the subject as he looked in more detail at the medical career of the Quaker philanthropist who started building his house in Fairfield Road, and others, and who then went bust because of the Napoleonic Wars. Peter said: “Shurmer Bath was also an untrained amateur family doctor who gave away

History of Bristol’s Quaker doctors revealed in new book for free his home-made pills to the poor. His life story led me to other Quakers he knew who were genuine professional doctors. “I discovered they were some of the city’s most prominent and successful practitioners, even though Quakers formed only a tiny minority of the population and faced strong prejudice against them because of their nonconformist religion. They included Joseph Fry, who trained and practised as an apothecary before starting to make chocolate, first sold as a health product; and Dr Abraham Ludlow, who had family and medical links with Dr Edward Jenner and was one of the first to offer his smallpox vaccine in Bristol. “Shurmer Bath, Joseph Fry and Abraham Ludlow were part of the same Quaker close-knit religious and social community,

in the Old City and St Paul’s area, along with other dissenters who flourished in medicine. “What’s new about this book is that it links all these characters together in a narrative thread. The medical role of The Methodist John Wesley, and several evangelical Anglicans, who treated physical ailments with electric shocks, are also explored.” Pills, Shocks & Jabs - the Remarkable Dissenting

n VET'S ADVICE

A career as a veterinary surgeon? THE veterinary profession is currently suffering from a severe shortage of trained vets in practice. This is partly due to the effects of Brexit and a reduction in European vets travelling to the UK to work as well as the covid situation which has led to a change in working practices leading to an inefficiency in the use of our time. In recent years the number of women in the profession has far outweighed the number of men, women, typically work part-time, combining their professional careers with childcare again, leading to a shortage in the workforce. Also, the pandemic has led to a huge increase in pet ownership as the new working from home has allowed puppies to become a reality for many who had only dreamed of owning a dog. There are estimated to be 3 million new pet owners since the first lockdown. All this has caused the perfect storm for our profession, there are not enough vets to go around and tales of pet owners struggling

to find a vet to perform routine procedures are in the news. So maybe now is the time for the veterinary profession to have a recruitment drive? After 36 years working in practice I still love my job, no two days are ever the same and there is an immense sense of satisfaction and pride in all I do. I am very privileged to have such a wonderful working life. Being a vet is not easy, the entry requirements are tough, the university degree course is even tougher but the rewards are amazing. We now have new vet schools opening in universities in the UK so more places than ever are available to train new vets. Surrey University and Harper Keele in Shropshire are now training vets joining Bristol, London, Cambridge, Liverpool, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The degree course is five or six years long and allows registration with The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Entrance requirements need academic

ability as well as evidence of relevant work experience. An interest and passion for animal care and welfare is needed and excellent communication skills as every animal is accompanied by a concerned and dedicated owner. Most vets are in practice working with companion animals or farm and equine however there are plenty of other opportunities including further study to become a specialist in a hospital or university situation, research, working for the government or military or in the pharmaceutical industry. With the advent of larger corporate owned practices it is now easier to combine family life with a career and more flexible working hours to allow a better work/life balance. We still need to provide a 24/7 service but emergency providers cover for many practices so the traditional ‘on call’ is less of a burden and emergency medicine is now a speciality in itself. So, if you think this may be the career for you, please do look on

Trust's accolade THE Restore Trust has been named 'UK Social Enterprise of the Year Award 2021' for its work supporting adults and young people across the West of England. The Trust’s CEO, Suzanne Thompson, received the SME News award on September 20 when Metro Mayor, Dan Norris called into their office at Longmead Avenue in Horfield. She explained to him how Trust staff help people with complex needs relating to homelessness, mental health problems, drug/ alcohol dependency and offending behaviour. The organisation helps socially excluded people to acquire skills, education and find employment opportunities. Mr Norrissaid: “The Restore Trust’s approach is all about helping people rebuild their confidence and motivation, giving them skills to help them change their lives for the better. I know from my own experience as a child protection officer in our area that this is much, much easier said than done. "

Bishopston director causing a fright BRISTOL writer and director, Ethan Evans, 25, has come a long way since his days as a pupil of Bishop Road Primary School and Redland Green School. Since graduating from the highly-praised film course at the University of Gloucestershire in 2018, Ethan has been self-funding short horror films under his production company Terror Arcade, which was founded with his partner and coproducer, Jess Bartlett. Despite the restrictions of lockdown, Ethan was determined to find a way to continue making short films. With the help of Jess and his family, Ethan made Stagnant at home and this no-budget horror short won the Audience Award in Arrow Video’s Horror Lockdown Competition in 2020. He then went on to direct Time Out, a micro-budget short that

rapidly gained over 15 million views across social media platforms in late 2020. The success of these short films led Ethan to secure an exciting opportunity in Canada, where he wrote and directed two episodes of The Haunted Museum, a brandnew anthology horror series produced by Hollywood filmmaker Eli Roth and television host Zak Bagans. The series, broadcast on Discovery+, explores the secrets and stories behind a selection of haunted artefacts currently on display in Zak Bagans’ museum in Las Vegas. Ethan’s episodes will be premiering on October 2nd and October 30th.. Find more of Ethan’s work at: www. ethanevansfilm.com

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Bus services need more government cash MY nephew rang me last week, shocked when he heard my voice booming out across the bus he was travelling on. Confused, he had searched for his uncle among the passengers until he realised I was not there in person, but only as a recorded message thanking people for wearing masks! I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to First Bus for supporting my campaign to encourage passengers to wear masks so we can keep everyone safe – and apologies to everyone who has to put up with my voice! I believe mask-wearing continues to matter on public transport as one way of encouraging more people back onto buses, which is vital to meet our ambitious net zero targets. But currently we only have about 60% of pre-covid passenger numbers, and that’s caused a problem. The government rightly subsidised buses during the pandemic but they figured passenger numbers would quickly recover from their covid nosedive once people started venturing out more. They fixed on a number of 80% of people travelling again. So with that over-optimistic figure in mind, at the end of August the government suddenly slashed two-thirds of its support for West of England bus services! The result was to be expected: bus companies cut back routes, leaving people frustrated

and angry about being unable to get to work or study, get to hospital or go shopping. I have some pots of money – but they are limited and can only be spent once. So I am having to see if there are some routes I can help save. But without more government cash many people will, I’m afraid, be left disappointed. Government needed to take a more measured approach that would adjust the funding to help our bus services recover to properly reflect gradually-rising passenger confidence and numbers. Across parties, MPs agree with me. I was delighted that Conservative MPs Chris Skidmore and Jack Lopresti, Lib Dem Wera Hobhouse, plus all Labour’s local MPs co-signed a letter I wrote to the transport minister calling for a rethink. I’m certain that bringing decision-makers and influencers together – to work in the interests of local people – is what’s needed if we’re to solve our region’s big challenges. It’s not just about saving buses. We also need to improve our public transport. Having lived all my life here, I know the problems well. And efforts to improve things haven’t always worked. Successes like Metrobus are easily overshadowed by major projects that never got off the ground, despite lots of talk. Across our region there are infrequent bus services. Often they don’t go where you need them to. Sometimes you have to sit and take

detours to places you don’t want to go, in order to finally reach somewhere you do! None of this will be solved overnight, but I’m pleased to have secured half-a-billion pounds for transport improvements, which will start kicking in next year. This will allow me to act more quickly to sort local transport challenges now and in the medium-term, as we build the high-quality West of England transport system of the future. A reliable, affordable, environmentally-friendly way of getting around our amazing region is what we all need and deserve.

n MAYOR'S VIEW

Investing for the future of sport and leisure in Bristol Access to high quality sport and leisure facilities is one of my administration’s top priorities. Our aims are to increase participation in sport and exercise, and lay the foundations for us to develop and support elite athletes of the future. Growing up, sport was a gateway for me to develop confidence and discipline. Some of my happiest memories are in the boxing gym or on the rugby field. I’ve carried that love of sport with me all my life, and I know so many Bristolians share my passion for keeping active. We are asking for your views on how we should

invest in Bristol’s leisure centres and sports facilities. We are bucking the trend by proposing investment in our leisure facilities, despite managing finite and declining budgets after more than a decade of cuts from central government. The council has an important role as one of many leisure facility providers. We currently have nine council-owned leisure centres, and eight school leisure facilities that are available for the public to use. It is important that we get the most impact per pound that we invest in terms of Bristolians’ health and

fitness. Our draft strategy for investment in Bristol’s leisure centres has two defining principles. First to improve facilities that are in areas where usage is high, so our investment reaches the highest number of people. And second to invest in areas where less wealthy citizens use and support leisure facilities. Our leisure centres in Horfield, Easton and South Bristol Pool are all hugely popular sites that have a positive impact on their local communities. Henbury and Hengrove, which have longterm funding models in place, are also to be retained in the

council’s leisure portfolio. This will mean we have a core offer of five state of the art leisure centres for Bristol that are spread out across the city and serve areas of high deprivation. You can give us your views on our plans to invest in sport and exercise in the city by responding to the consultation, which you can access at https://bristol. citizenspace.com

n VINEYARD NEWS with INGRID BATES

Starlings go for white grapes, not red!

SEPTEMBER is one of my favourite months. The level work needed to maintain the vineyard suddenly slows and there is often a lovely clarity and light in the air. The grapes have now swollen to their full size and begun the six week process of ripening known as veraison. We usually aim to pick them some time in midOctober but will soon begin testing the sugar and acid levels to get a more accurate idea of the optimum harvest date. As I write this, the swallows are gathering and swooping over the vineyard but they’ll soon head south to be replaced by groups of starlings instead. We used to have real

trouble with starlings eating our red grapes but thankfully they don’t seem to notice the white ones. Long may this continue! Badgers, pheasants and hedgerow birds are also partial to the odd grape but we take a live and let live approach to the occasional bit of loss. Over the last few months we’ve been hinting at something big that was about to happen. In this issue of Bishopston Voice we can finally reveal that we’re soon to launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to buy a small field on the outskirts of the city! Our small, leased vineyard in Somerset has given us a great start but we want to establish

a firm, more secure base for the future where it’s easier for people to engage with us and find out how we grow our vines. Our wines are proving to be really popular and we need more grapes to meet demand. We’d love to grow those grapes without the use of chemicals in as sustainable a way as possible. HUNDREDS have gone the extra mile to raise money for people with dementia and their carers at the Alzheimer’s Society Bristol Memory Walk. More than 600 people, including some from Redland and Bishopston, united against dementia in the sunshine at Bristol Memory Walk on September 4 for the charity’s flagship fundraising walk at Bristol harbourside to remember and support loved ones affected by dementia. Those taking part completed either a short 1.5km walk taking a gentle stroll around Cathedral Walk and Hannover Quay or the longer 4.5km walk which took walkers around Bristol’s historic harbourside, enjoying views of the S.S. Great Britain and Cumberland Basin before returning across Pero’s Bridge. The fundraisers stepped out to stop dementia in its tracks after a devastating period for those living with the disease. People affected by dementia, worst hit by coronavirus, face a difficult road to recovery due to a lack of social contact, routine and interruptions to essential care and support. Lorna Robertson, Alzheimer’s Society Area Manager, said: “We are in awe of our incredible fundraisers who turned out in their hundreds to support the 4,700 people estimated to be living with dementia in Bristol. “It’s extremely moving to see so many people come together to honour or remember their loved ones. “The pandemic has been catastrophic for people with dementia, with Alzheimer’s Society’s services, like our Dementia Connect support line, used over six million times since lockdown began in March 2020. Every pound raised from the Bristol Memory Walk will help Alzheimer’s Society provide information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by dementia. “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this year’s Memory Walk such a brilliant success.” Visit memorywalk.org.uk to find out more about the remaining Memory Walk events or to organise your own Memory Walk at a location and time of your choosing.

n NATURE WATCH With Dawn Lawrence

O

NE of the good things about having an interest in wildlife is that it connects you to the changing seasons, because the plants and animals around us respond in distinctive ways. Birds are particularly noticeable in this respect. Some change behaviour, for instance jays become much easier to see in autumn as they get busy collecting and hiding their acorn winter stores. Of course, many birds leave us for warmer places but others arrive and, as the weather gets chillier, we listen out after dark for a “tseeep tseeep” call, which is the sound of redwings, keeping in contact as they fly through the night seeking their winter home here in Britain. One of my favourite birds, and one that always seems to be easier to see in autumn and winter, is the green woodpecker. This well-dressed character is richly coloured, like a dandy highwayman. The sexes are similar, with a cloak of mossy green, a cap

A green woodpecker, photo by Andrei Stroe

of pillar box red and a rakish black mask – they also have a yellow rump but I can’t confirm that this

is true of highwaymen. I see them most often at the allotments – they have a characteristic dipping flight, skimming up and down through the air like you might wave your hand to indicate the sea. Despite their bright colouring they can be hard to spot; always wary because they feed on the ground. They eat ants, using their strong tongue to break into ant colonies and fish out the inhabitants. They are found anywhere there are ants and are very keen on orchards, hence giving their name to Woodpecker Cider. I’m not sure why I see them more often in autumn and winter, but it may be that additional birds come into the city for the few extra degrees of warmth – which also makes their ant prey more active. The lack of leaves on the trees helps, especially when looking for one perched on a trunk, where they will hang on with their long claws. We once saw one sheltering beneath a branch from the snow, right in the middle of the city. It

arranged itself very carefully to get the maximum shelter from the branch and stayed there, tucked in against the cold, whilst the snow persisted. Usually the first hint that one is around is the loud and insistent call. It is a strange cry which sounds like a cross between a slightly hysterical laugh and an insistent whistle, with a single rapidly repeated note. The similarity to laughter is supposedly the reason for their old name of yaffle, though I think their cry sounds more like “whewhewhewhewhewhe” with a ringing quality to it. Like other woodpeckers they nest in holes in trees, often excavating a hole in dead wood with their large, strong beaks. This is just one of the reasons why standing dead wood (i.e. a dead limb still attached to a tree, or a whole standing dead tree) is so important for wildlife.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Tackling cybercrime and supporting victims I WAS elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) five months ago. Over this time, work has continued to gather momentum and there is much more to be done to ensure local people are receiving an efficient, effective and legitimate police service. Recently, I have been reflecting on the key successes my team and I have achieved so far and I wanted to share these with you. I have taken on the role as national lead PCC for the Economic and Cybercrime portfolio. I will be working with representatives from City of London Police to understand the challenges in identifying and bringing offenders to justice. My overall ambition is to make everyone more resistant and resilient to cybercrime and ensure nowhere is safe for criminals who

commit this crime in the UK. I have also taken on the role of the chair for the Local Criminal Justice Board and will be working in partnership with heads of organisations across the Criminal Justice Service, including Crown Prosecution Service, the courts, prisons and probation. We will also continue to work closely with colleagues from the Probation Service to develop a co-commissioned reducing reoffending service for the whole of Avon and Somerset. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s commissioning team has been extremely successful in a number of bids to the Ministry of Justice to further support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The total additional investment received from the Ministry of Justice for victim

services supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in Avon and Somerset is almost £1.6 million this year. Finally, we launched the search for a new chief constable for Avon and Somerset last month. The chief constable has overall responsibility for leading the force, creating a vision and setting direction and culture that builds public and organisational confidence. This will be accomplished by delivering a professional, effective and efficient police service. This is a crucial appointment. The police officers and staff in Avon and Somerset are dedicated and hard-working, and I am looking for a chief constable that can enhance their considerable efforts and skills. I want a leader who is able to inspire their workforce and

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford meet the needs of different communities across this geographically diverse area. The successful applicant will be in post early November following a police and crime panel confirmation. I will keep you updated as this process continues.

Focus on future of leisure facilities THE consultation on Bristol’s draft Leisure Facilities Investment Strategy has opened following Cabinet approval to consult on proposals. The council’s proposed approach is to make improvements across the sites which serve the highest number of users and serve the areas of greatest deprivation in Bristol, helping to ensure that all Bristol citizens have the encouragement, opportunity, and environment they need to lead active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

The council’s approach sets out potential investment in Horfield Leisure Centre, Easton Leisure Centre and South Bristol Pool. On the basis that the council cannot afford all three options, the consultation asks the public to prioritise where they think investment should be made. The consultation is open from Friday 17 September to Sunday 7 November. For more information on the proposals and to complete the survey, visit: bristol.gov. uk/leisureinvestment

Inspired by Covid MANY Minds, a mental health and performance charity based in Bristol, has been working to create a new musical performance piece which explores the themes of loneliness and isolation and the power of nature to offer comfort and connection. The production, I've been waiting… is Directed by Viki Browne with renowned Vocal Composer, Verity Standen and Sound Designer, Jack Drewry. Many Minds have created a celebration of the natural world which they have achieved through the use of voice, sounds, songs and movement to bring people together and offer comfort in the most challenging of times. Many Minds Artistic Director, Viki Browne says: “Since the first lockdown in March 2020, we have been safely engaging with people to keep them connected and have been working on this musical performance via online platforms and phone-in workshops. ” I've been waiting… is a 25 minute performance with a 15-minute Q&A session that will be part of a larger production due to take place at the Bristol Old Vic in October 2022. It takes place on 1st and 2nd October at The Theatre on the Downs, and everyone's invited! Tickets are £6 and can be booked at https://bristololdvic.org. uk/whats-on/ive-been-waiting

n LIBRARY BOOK REVIEW The Island of Missing Trees – Elif Shafak Review by Bob Deacon The island referenced in the title is the beautiful holiday isle of Cyprus, which has been partitioned between Greece and Turkey since 1974. The timelines in the novel shift between Cyprus in 1974, with a blossoming romance between two teenagers, Kostas, a Christian Greek boy, and Defne, a Muslim Turkish girl, and London in 1990 which finds Kostas and his daughter Ada living in exile. Ada has never visited the land where her parents were born and the story follows her mission to untangle years of secrets, separation and silence between the families of her mother and father. The author, Elif Shafak, lives in exile in London with her husband and family having been displaced from her native Turkey. Shafak imaginatively uses a fig tree as one of the main narrators. The fig tree starts its life in Cyprus where it can be found in The Happy Fig, a local

tavern frequented by both Greeks and Turks and which is used by Kostas and Defne to secretly meet up away from their disapproving families. When Kostas is forced to flee Cyprus following the Turkish invasion, he cuts a sapling from the fig tree and smuggles it in his suitcase to England where he plants it in his north London garden. The fig tree provides the reader with the historical background to the current partition of Cyprus, knitting together the two timelines of the story and gives us a compassionate and wise observer to the love affair between Kostas and Defne and to the relationship between Kostas and his daughter. The fig tree effectively provides the emotional beating heart of this novel. This is an enchanting, moving and beautifully written book, expressing the love, hardship and grief experienced by those displaced from the land of their birth and living in exile in a foreign land. For this book, and many more please visit us at Bishopston Library at 100A Gloucester Road, Bishopston. Opening Hours Monday (1pm-7pm) Tuesday (closed) Wednesday (11am-5pm) Thursday (11am-5pm) Friday (11am-5pm) Saturday (11am-5pm) Sunday (closed)

Westbury Unites to Welcome Refugees: Your help is needed WESTBURY Welcome is a Community Sponsorship group, working in partnership with the Home Office and Bristol City Council to offer a warm welcome to a small number of families of Syrian refugees. Given the recent events in Afghanistan, Westbury-onTrym, and other areas of Bristol now have the opportunity to extend community sponsorship to Afghans. To enable this to

happen, Westbury Welcome are keen to offer their support in setting up new local sponsorship groups across the city. Westbury Welcome have sponsored two families to settle in Westbury-on-Trym. Volunteer Lesley explains: “These families have moved from refugee camps and difficult circumstances to Westbury. We support them to live in their own home, receive good quality health care, learn

English, have the opportunity to find paid employment and, for the children, to attend school. It is such a privilege to meet and get to know these families.” Lucy Malt, one of the project leaders says: “Although it’s about transforming a refugee’s life - it’s not a situation that they wanted or invited. There are only a handful of community sponsorship groups in Bristol, a City of Sanctuary. We are looking

for people who want to start their own group to get in contact with us, as we can support them through the process of sponsoring a refugee.” Information about Community Sponsorship can be found at www.resetuk.org.uk For further information on joining a local meeting or setting up a new local group please email westburywelcome@gmail. com
