Labour's Dan is new Metro Mayor

Ashley Down Oak saved A 120-YEAR-OLD oak tree condemned to the axe four months ago appears to have been saved. Less than a week after a Green surge saw the party win 24 seats on Bristol City Council, Labour Mayor Marvin Rees announced that experts had found a way to maintain the tree in Ashley Down Road, which had faced being felled because of subsidence to a home nearby.

In a Facebook video, Mr Rees, who won a second term in the election but saw his party's seats total drop to 24, said a way had been found to protect the property without chopping down the tree. Save the Ashley Down Oak campaigners are delighted but want to know more about the previously "unavoidable" decision to axe the oak. Full story: Pages 2 & 3

Oak saved from axe

Campaigners occupied the Ashley Down Oak in February 2021 CAMPAIGNERS have won a battle to save a 120-year-old oak tree that Bristol City Council condemned as doomed just four months ago. Mayor Marvin Rees announced in a Facebook video on May 11 that experts had found a way to maintain the tree in Ashley Down Road, which was causing subsidence to a nearby home. The 22-metre holm oak

was occupied by protesters in February who submitted a 2,000name petition after the council issued a notice of felling. At the time, the local authority said pruning had not stopped significant subsidence damage to a neighbouring property and that an independent expert recommended the tree’s removal, saying it was “sadly unavoidable”. Marvin Rees: Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees announcing in a Facebook video that the Ashley Down Oak has been saved are celebrating after the city mayor unexpectedly announced it could be saved after all, although the group disputes the tree is the cause of the property’s structural problems and is demanding an immediate tree preservation order (TPO). And while new 18-year-old Bishopston & Ashley Down ward Green Cllr Lily Fitzgibbon welcomed the news, she said residents and activists were “completely left out of the process”. In the video, filmed at the scene, Mr Rees said: “We’ve been working with experts behind the scenes and a really good piece of news is that we’ve found a way of protecting that home without felling the tree. It will include pollarding and some cutting back of the tree’s canopy, so the tree can be saved and the home can be saved.” He thanked 19-year-old conservationist Mya-Rose Craig, aka Birdgirl, for her “communications on this matter” and former Cllr Afzal Shah who was cabinet member for climate, ecology and sustainable growth before losing his seat at last week’s local elections. The mayor added: “We also anticipate that this will be a growing challenge for us. “Climate change will mean that trees will be drawing more moisture from the soil and it will mean more situations in which they come into conflict with local buildings “So one of the things we are going to be doing is looking at the way we use our climate reserve to better understand and then, where we can, intervene in such situations so that we can save both trees and homes. Stado campaigner Torin Menzies said: “While we welcome the mayor’s

announcement, our work here is not yet done. We still need to ensure Bristol City Council acts appropriately and does not cause unnecessary risk or harm and that it is transparent about its current plans and its original reasoning behind the attempted felling of the Ashley Down Oak. “While this is a big victory for both us and tree protection and environmentalist campaigns across the city, the council still needs to improve its urban tree policies – this includes granting more TPOs, standing up against private companies on behalf of local residents and doing whatever is reasonably possible before felling mature trees.” Cllr Fitzgibbon tweeted: “Excellent to hear that local residents have been listened to. I’m sure @AshleyDownOak would like more than promises. “Can we have confirmation that the felling contract is cancelled? While I am incredibly relieved to hear that the Ashley Down Oak will be saved, I’m concerned that residents and campaigners were completely left out of the process. “Additionally this campaign never should have been necessary. These decisions shouldn’t be happening as an afterthought and council policies need to be updated to reflect the declaration of ecological emergency.” Ashley ward Green Cllr Jude English said in a comment below the mayor’s video: “Without the activist campaign following the felling notice this tree would already have been felled. I think the election of 24 Green councillors has also helped Marvin and Labour understand what an ecological emergency actually means. Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporter

n NEWS THE Green Party wants a “significant role” influencing major policy decisions in Bristol after a ‘Green surge’ at the polls. Lockleaze councillor Heather Mack, who was among a large crop of new Green councillors sworn in at City Hall on May 10, said a new power-sharing arrangement at the local authority was needed to reflect the results of last week’s local elections. In a historic election result the Green Party made 13 gains in Bristol, more than doubling their number of councillors from 11 to 24. It also won the popular city vote polling 31.8% of all votes cast, gaining seats in wards not typically considered Green heartlands such as Lockleaze, Lawrence Hill and Bedminster. Across Bristol, voters chose 24 Labour councillors, 24 Green councillors, 14 Conservatives and eight Liberal Democrats, ending Labour’s dominance of Bristol City Council. All four wards covered by the Bishopston Voice returned Green Party councillors which means

e’ in the new council where the turnout was 56 per cent, giving them both majorities of over 1,450 votes. Martin said: “We’re proud and honoured to be local representatives on the council until 2024. The fact people all over the ward know our names and have been thanking us for our hard work, the help and support, and being active on their behalf over the years is truly rewarding. “There were very long queues at some locations, notably Bishopston Library, partly in response to the high turnout at a double polling station plus the precautions due to Covid. We’ll be feeding back suggestions about how this site can be managed better and whether two polling stations are best located by a busy shopping street and bus stop on a narrow pavement next to constant traffic. We’re sorry some people appear to have turned away because of the long queues.” The youngest councillor elected to office in Bristol is 18-year old Lily Fitzgibbon, who represents Bishopston and Ashley Down along with Emma Edwards. Lily said: “Voters here care about social and environmental justice and they trust Greens to deliver this. I’m so excited that local people have supported us and we will do everything we can to repay the faith that you have shown.” Cllr Jude English retained a seat for the Green Party in Ashley

ward and is joined by fellow Green Tim Wye and Labour’s Amirah Cole. “There’s a lot to do in Ashley,” said Tim. “It’s been an underlooked ward. And we need to get the same kind of investment and response we get in other areas and really speak up. And I’ll be working with both my local councillors to do exactly that.” Longstanding councillor for Cotham Anthony Negus (Lib Dem) lost his seat. The ward's new Green Party councillors are Mohamed Makawi and Guy Poultney. Cllr Makawi said he was looking forward to serving the residents of Cotham, fighting for Cotham’s parks, for improved public transport, for businesses, and to turn Chandos Road into a Liveable Neighbourhood. Labour mayor Marvin Rees, who beat the Green candidate Sandy Hore-Ruthven by more than 13,613 votes to be reelected, must appoint a new cabinet by May 25, the date of the first full council meeting in the new municipal cycle. Mr Rees has already reappointed four members of his previous Labour-only cabinet and is expected to announce more names later this week. Including Mr Rees, the cabinet will have ten members altogether. At full council, where Mr Rees has a vote, the Labour group now has 25 votes from 71, where just before the election it had 34.

n NEWS AVON and Somerset’s new police and crime commissioner has promised to “shout and scream” for more funding for the force and has already spoken to the Home Secretary. Conservative candidate Mark Shelford received 34.4 per cent of first preference votes and was elected after second preference votes were counted, beating Labour’s Kerry Barker. Former Cotham councillor, Cleo Lake, secured 16.4% of first preference votes for the Green Party and came third. Heather Shearer polled 13.3% for the Liberal Democrats and independent candidate and former deputy to Sue Mountstevens, John Smith, received 11.7% of first preference votes. He is only the area’s second PCC, taking over from independent Sue Mountstevens, who stepped down after nine years in the role. The PCC sets the strategic direction for the force and one of Mr Shelford’s first tasks will be to appoint a new chief constable

“Somebody that exudes leadership and command and has unshakeable belief in the Peelian principles of policing. “They need to have all the qualifications, knowledge and

experience. Key to me is the leadership piece. “Andy Marsh has been an exceptional leader who has really changed Avon and Somerset for the better. He came in at a difficult time when there had been quite a few chief constables and morale was quite low. “He had to deal with a really difficult time and led exceptionally well.” A key challenge for police over the last year has been handling protests during successive lockdowns. The new PCC has said he wholly supports the Police, Crime and Sentencing Bill – which has sparked riots in Bristol – as it reinforces “the British people’s right to peacefully protest but not to disrupt, so those people going about their lawful business should not be affected by a protest”. Traffic and parking campaign continues AFTER four weeks of active campaigning on traffic and parking issues in the lead-up to the elections, members and supporters of Bristol and St Andrews Traffic and Parking Group (BOSA) say they warmly welcome all newly elected councillors in local wards. The group took their fight about unregulated parking in Bishopston, St Andrews and Ashley Down to their streets during the election campaign, with highly visible protests about the blocking of pavements by inconsiderate drivers and the lack of regulation and enforcement of local parking regulations. This has been an issue locally for years as there is a high volume of cars parked on narrow streets. Children walking to school, parents pushing buggies and elderly, vulnerable people are often forced to walk in the road due to obstructive parking on pavements and corners of roads. A spokesperson for BOSA said: “We look forward to hearing in due course who the new cabinet member for transport and connectivity will be and how they will honour and clarify budget and timescales for the assurances made by Cllr [Kye] Dudd [who lost his seat] about a potential Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) in St Andrews,

nN EWS FROM OUR MP

Representing Bristol West in a new role AS I write, I am coming to the end of my first working week as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, a change from my previous role as Shadow Housing Secretary. A lot of people have asked me what this means, so I thought I would use my column to explain. In this role I am working across all policy areas, challenging the government’s plan and presenting alternatives. The main event in my calendar every week is Business Questions on Thursday morning, when it is my job to question the Leader of the House - currently Jacob Rees-Mogg - who sets the government agenda. You can watch this on BBC Parliament or www.parliamentlive.tv. In my debut, I asked about the government’s plans to require photo ID for voting, something which is unnecessary and undemocratic. I also asked about the government’s plan for social care, the public inquiry into the pandemic response and the

building safety crisis. It is a real honour to have such a key role in shaping the big public debates of the day. I was sad to have to leave the housing policy role behind. My team and I had some decent wins over the last year, from forcing the government to announce £3.5bn of funding to make tower blocks safe, to preventing evictions during the pandemic. I know my successor Lucy Powell will keep the pressure on the Tories in this policy area. So what does this change mean for Bristol? First and foremost, I will continue to be your MP, so please do contact me if you need my help or would like to share your opinion on a political issue. On top of that, my new parliamentary role will allow me to put your concerns directly to the person that sets the government agenda. If you think there is something I should be raising, please get in touch. My constituents have always inspired and informed my

political work. • I know many of you will feel a huge relief as the Covid restrictions are expected to lift further in the next few weeks. I cannot wait to spend more time with friends and family again. The prospect of in-person meetings has never been so exciting. However, we still need to be very cautious. In regular calls with senior NHS staff, I am hearing that we must continue to follow guidelines, especially as new Covid variants threaten to undermine all the progress we’ve made so far. Perhaps most importantly of all, when you are offered a vaccine, please take it. It could save someone’s life. • Since I last wrote an article for Bishopston Voice, we have had a series of elections here in Bristol. I’d like to congratulate all the newlyelected councillors in Bristol, I look forward to working with you. Thank you to all the outgoing councillors for their years of hard work.

WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

it may be possible to take advantage of this tax break. If the beneficiaries of the estate agree, it is possible to effectively amend the terms of a Will within two years of the date of death. A ‘Deed of Variation’ can be drawn up which sets out the family members’ agreed arrangements

Mural celebrates Bristol bowls CLUB members at Bristol St Andrews are thrilled with the new artwork on their pavilion. Bristol St Andrews Bowls Club commissioned local artist Andy from Zasedesign to brighten up their club house. What was once a dirty, blank

wall has been transformed into an original mural that celebrates both the game of bowls, and the wonderful city of Bristol. Andy has been involved in art and graffiti since 1996. Born in Trencin, Slovakia, his work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions and festivals across Europe in a style that combines natural textures with abstract elements. The club has been working hard over the winter to improve the facilities available to their members. The installation of floodlights (funded by Sport England) have transformed the bowling green into one that is the envy of other local clubs. Volunteers from the club have also revamped a 1930s scoreboard on the green and made numerous improvements to the pavilion and grounds. Rubbish of decades cleared from green IF someone asked you what size skip you might need to clear Redland Green of the accumulated rubbish of decades, you would be unlikely to guess at eight cubic metres. The Green generally looks so tidy (plastic sweet wrappers and bottles notwithstanding) that the rubbish lurking around some of its perimeters might not have been particularly obvious. Yet this was the size of skip that was filled to capacity on April 29 after local residents participated in a “deep cleanse” organised by Redland Green Community Group (RGCG) and supported by Bristol City Council Parks Department. BCC Parks staff member Ben Brown brought the skip and a Kubota, or minidigger, to the green and worked with the volunteers, making possible much more than we’d have achieved on our own. About 20 local residents, and the Redland councillor

Fi Hance turned out with wheelbarrows and sack trucks and a huge amount of combined energy. Ben set to work along the path from St Oswald’s Road with the Kubota, clearing the tangle of bramble and rubbish – which prepared the way for the volunteers to clear what remained by hand. While he did that, residents set to work on removing the rubbish from the woodland by the garages. Julie Parker from Redland Green Community Group said: “Many hands make light work – five hours after starting, the green was looking as beautiful as it should, relieved of its longstanding burden of eyesores.” What needed cleaning up? Many in the area, and particularly the residents of Cossins Road, had long been vexed by an ugly accumulation of rubbish in among the trees in front of the garages at the

and a great deal more. Julie added: “”This area does not belong to the council and while contiguous with it, isn’t part of the green. However, that technicality makes no difference to local children, for whom it is simply a play area. "It was safe to conclude that as those responsible for this

POLICE disrupted a number of house parties and a pub lock-in which breached Covid-19 regulations in April. Such gatherings were not permitted in England to prevent the spread of the virus. Calls officers have attended recently include: • A house party was reported to police at about 11pm on Friday 23 April in Redland’s Alexandra Park. A number of people initially attempted to hide from police before eventually coming downstairs when an officer said they were going to search other rooms. Six people, in their 20s, received £800 fixed penalty notices for organising a house party of more than 15 people. • Earlier that same evening, officers were also dispatched to a house party in St Pauls Road, in Bristol, where eight people were fined £200. Inspector Ruth Gawler said: “The vast majority of people have played their part by adhering to the lockdown rules at the start of the year and we’re thankful they are continuing to comply with the restrictions and advice currently in place. “Our approach to dealing with such incidents remains the same – we will engage with the public, explain the rules and encourage them to comply. But enforcement through fines remains an option, especially for those responsible for the blatant and deliberate breaches we’ve been called out to deal with in recent days.” Approximately 55,000 Covid-19 breaches have been reported to Avon and Somerset Police since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. A total of 2,193 of fixed penalty notices have been issued during that time.

Brunel Field Primary joins theatre project BARTON Hill based theatre company and children’s charity, Travelling Light, has been awarded more than £100,000 to work with five Bristol schools, including Brunel Field Primary. The funding comes from the latest round of Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Teacher Development Fund. Travelling Light is is one of ten organisations nationally to win funds. It will receive £108,500 to work with the schools over 24 months, supporting teachers to explore how drama-based learning can develop language, speech and emotional literacy, support wellbeing and address inequality of opportunity which affects educational outcomes. The project, Light Up School Learning: An Arts-based inquiry, runs from September 2021 – July 2023. Travelling Light will work with teachers and artists to expand teachers practice and to embed drama into the wider curriculum. The approaches developed will support pupil’s confidence, learning and their ability to express feelings and aspirations. The project will develop teachers’ confidence in using arts-based practice in their everyday approach. Insights and learning gained will also be shared with other schools.

Travelling Light will work with Brunel Field Primary, Victoria Park Primary, Redfield Educate Together, Merchants Academy and Hannah More Primary. Lizzy Stephens, creative learning officer and project lead at Travelling Light, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this funding to work more deeply with our partner schools in Bristol. We are looking forward to being able to explore and measure the impact of drama-based activity, experiment with new blended approaches and broaden the opportunity for knowledge exchange and learning amongst teachers and

artists. It is an exciting opportunity to really embed drama into teaching practice and build a strong school culture for the arts.” Richard Croughan, music and drama lead at Brunel Field Primary School, said: “Travelling Light has been instrumental in embedding a whole-school culture of arts teaching at Brunel Field. We have worked with them for the last five years and have together designed and developed an Arts Days package which, at its very heart, is intended to grow and sustain children's interest in and love of the arts as well as nurture teachers' understanding and trust in the power and efficacy of using theatre and the arts throughout the curriculum. “We continue to see how music, art, dance and drama help unlock the curriculum for more of our children - it is a language, a communication tool, a safe and nurturing way to access subjects from English and history to maths and French; it offers children so many more tools in a time where 'pupil voice' has never been more important. It feels very exciting to work with Travelling Light on a project that aims to foster these ideas across more Bristol schools." Fairfield High School tops new league table THE Guardian Good Schools Guide has rated Fairfield High School (FHS) the highest rated non selective state school in Bristol, showcasing the organisation’s continuous hard work, passion and dedication. While the school scored highly in a number of the segments, it shone in particular in the following areas: representation, disadvantaged pupils and progress. The school’s We are Fairfield ‘Aspirational for All’ values is a perfect example of how these areas have been developed, as students are prepared for a rich and fulfilling life, with the training and encouragement to be as creative and innovative as possible. Furthermore, the emphasis on student leadership is helping students to become change makers within society, both at school and for years to come. Alice Towle, former Head Student at Fairfield, is a shining example of this: “Going to secondary at Fairfield provided me with so many opportunities in and out of the classroom. We always used to joke that I was never at school because there was always something exciting going on, from trips to debate competitions or sports matches. And if ever there was a club that we wanted that didn’t exist we were allowed to find it. From feminist societies to anime clubs… we really had everything. And it’s this attitude of pushing everyone to do their best in and

Former head student Alice Towle speaking at the Mayor’s Annual State of City Address out of the classroom that I really valued at Fairfield. “Fairfield was instrumental in getting me into youth politics. I would never have even known about the youth council if a teacher hadn’t recommended I applied; and I wouldn’t have had the confidence to apply without first being a Form Rep before House Captain and finally onto Head Student. The way in which Fairfield allowed students to really champion change within the school has helped us all. If there was ever a problem we were allowed an active role in sorting it – they even let students do CPD for them! Whilst it was one of the most terrifying things, it has given me so much confidence in my role as youth mayor.” FHS highly values its

community and is proud of the many different nationalities, cultures and ethnicities of staff and students, past and present. It ensures every individual is seen and heard, and is exposed and educated in topical and thought-provoking projects such as Black Lives Matter, LGBTQI+ History Month and wider equality issues. Actions speak even louder than words as two members of the Fairfield’s Senior Leadership Team recently presented on the National Schools of Tomorrow’s panel to share how the school’s equalities curriculum, recovery and Black Lives Matter are being fed into its post Covid recovery and wider curriculum, and will also be speaking at Bristol’s upcoming Teacherfest 2021. Statistics wise, Fairfield is

also very proud of its academic achievements, with students, no matter what their background or ability, do much better than other schools nationally. At Fairfield, great results go hand in hand with a holistic and outward looking approach to pupil personal development. Nick Lewis, Principal at FHS, said: “It is a delightful mix of things that our community are doing on a daily basis that makes Fairfield so special. We are constantly evolving with societal changes and l am proud of the passion, integrity and actions of individuals within our organisation who shape what we are. The news that The Guardian has identified us as the best nonselective state school in Bristol makes the best job in the world become even better."

Exhibition at Beacon BRISTOL Beacon’s exhibition: A Fine Balance – in Carlos’ Footsteps takes place at the Bristol Beacon foyer from Bristol Wednesday 26 May – Sat 5 June. With funding from Heritage Schools and a grant from the the University of the West of England’s Community Fund, Local Learning has been working with primary school St Michael on the Mount and university students to create an exhibition and live show in collaboration with actors, activists, archivists, aerialists and acrobats. Carlos Trower escaped slavery to

become one of the world’s greatest tight rope walkers and used this platform to promote the emancipation of enslaved people. A Fine Balance explores the remarkable story of ‘The African Blondin’ who once lived on Christmas Steps and performed with a Victorian Panorama show at Bristol’s Colston Hall (now Bristol Beacon) for over 3,000 people.

The Bristol Beacon opened its doors with an eclectic mix of streamed shows and in-person events starting from May 20. The upcoming programme will also feature lively jazz, amazing folk music and artwork making it one for lovers of all the arts. A Fine Balance exhibition is free but tickets must be booked in advance.

n EDUCATION CLIFTON High School have announced the appointment of their new Head of Infant and Junior School, Mrs Alice Taylor, their previous Junior School Lead. Mrs Taylor graduated with a degree in psychology from Cardiff University and later completed a Primary PGCE at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She has a wealth of experience in both the state and private sector with previous experience including teaching and leading at the British School of Paris. She said: “I believe that Clifton High School is the exemplar environment for shaping pupils' intellect and wellbeing, ensuring a successful future. “My ethos is that teaching should be learning focused, and knowledge centred, with close attention being paid to skills, understanding and attitudes. Finding pupils' individual brilliance through personalising learning and teaching means taking a highly structured and responsive approach to each child; it is then that we see progression and achievement through a love for learning.'” Starting this summer term, Clifton High School has also announced the launch of its new

outdoor education provision, Clifton High Adventure. The school has teamed up with Mendip Outdoor Pursuits, Belmont Estate and Oxfordshire Outdoors to create a bespoke outdoor education programme.

The aim of the Adventure programme is to enable skill development, rather than one-off introductory sessions – Clifton High hopes to make up for the time children have spent indoors over lockdown and to grow in

them an appreciation for the living world. Visits to the Mendip Centre will include offsite forest school, climbing, kayaking, archery, target sports, rock skills and hiking. Clifton High teaching staff will also lead outdoor curriculum enrichment such as nature studies, art and creative writing. Farm education at Belmont Estate will see children learn about nature, sustainability, non-aggressive farming, conservation, rewilding and foraging. The Infant School will take part in Beach Education, where they will incorporate the surroundings of the West coastline into their curriculum for subjects such as art, design, construction, science and drama. Innovative clean air project awarded funding DR Fiona Crawford, research fellow in transport studies at UWE Bristol, has been awarded funding for an innovative clean air project, looking at how car and van travel has changed across Bristol during different stages of the pandemic. Fiona’s project, ‘Characterising changing travel patterns in the Covid-19 era’, looks at applying methods previously used in gene sequencing, to number plates and vehicle registration data, in order to generate insights

into travel behaviour during the pandemic and provide insights into the air quality impacts of changes in working patterns and shopping behaviour (e.g. increasing home working and home deliveries). The research will use data supplied by Bristol City Council, under a data sharing agreement, and is timely with the Clean Air Zone due to be introduced in the city in October 2021. Dr Crawford said: “We are thrilled to receive this funding to help with our research. We know that there have been far fewer cars on the road during the pandemic, but what we don’t know is whether it is the least polluting vehicles that have been taken off the roads. “This research will examine how travel has

changed across Bristol during the pandemic and these behavioural responses will be examined alongside the emissions standard of the vehicles involved.” The funding is part of the University of Birmingham-led Transition Clean Air Network, funded by UK Research and Innovation.

Transition has awarded £48,000 to five innovative clean air research projects, including Fiona’s, aimed at helping to shape the UK’s low-emission mobility revolution to deliver clean air solutions and help meet the government’s ‘net zero’ targets by 2050.

Music success for Redmaids’ High School students REDMAIDS’ High School for Girls, in Westbury-on-Trym, is celebrating the success of three of its students in their ARSM Diploma qualification for piano. The ARSM Diploma is a post-grade 8 qualification, and requires students to deliver a half-hour programme of repertoire, put together according to the students’ individual musical strengths and enthusiasms. Lucy Keeley (Year 13, Distinction), Abigail Davis (Year 13, Merit) and Amy Mercer (Year 12, Merit) each study music A-Level at the school, and each already holds a Grade 8 qualification for the piano. Lucy also plays the oboe, which she has already achieved an ARSM for, and the recorder to Grade 8 standard and is going on to study music at Oxford University. Abigail holds a Grade 8 violin qualification, and Amy also takes singing lessons. All three are enthusiastic participants

ARSM students Lucy Keeley, Amy Mercer and Abigail Davies in ensembles at the school, including instrumental groups and the chamber choir. Each girl spoke of the difficulty of learning their pieces via online tuition. “It was a very demanding experience,” said Amy.

“As the majority of my lessons were taken online, it was difficult to hear details in the music which are essential to include in the piece for a diploma, but the return to face-to-face lessons made it easier for me to iron out any mistakes and add extra

expression and depth to my pieces.” Lucy Keeley, who achieved a Distinction said she was “over the moon about the result, and feel the ARSM performance diploma is a really rewarding experience, which allows you to express yourself through the music.” Abigail found that the cancellation of A-Level exams gave her something to work towards through the lockdown, and motivated her to practise more as she worked toward the exam date. The girls played a range of music, varying from Bach Prelude and Fugue, Schubert Sonata and Gershwin. Head of Keyboard Studies at the school, Catherine Woodman, said: “Each girl performed beautifully, and it’s a delight to see such fantastic achievements in music at Redmaids’ High.”

Growing their own school dinners FAMILIES turned out in force for a gardening day at The Dolphin School in Montpelier. Children and parents helped out, working in small groups within government guidelines to weed and plant in the school’s roof garden. The children planted sunflower seeds and vegetables and will be responsible for tending and watering the plants. The aim is for the vegetables to be used in the school kitchen. Volunteers also moved two large trees

from the old school site to the playground. Headteacher Shelley Flanagan said: "It was so fantastic to have families come in at the weekend and help plant. The roof garden looks amazing and we cannot wait to try the food once it has grown. The new trees will provide some seating and shade as well as supporting the environment. n NEWS WORK has begun on the creation of a wildflower meadow at St Andrews Park. The site for the 1000m2 meadow is adjacent to Leopold Road and will host a mix of native wildflower species providing habitats for wildlife including bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Due to issues with the tractor that is being used to rotavate the area, the meadow is taking longer than anticipated to sow. However, some seed planting will be carried out in May. Kay Snowdon from Friends of St Andrews Park (FOSAP) explains the thinking behind planting a meadow: “Everyone can help give nature a helping hand,” says Kay. “Areas like this are needed to restore nature as 97% of our native wildflower meadows in the UK have been lost in the last 75 years. It also adds to the biodiversity value of the park and helps to make Bristol and the St Andrews area more healthy and sustainable. “Park users will be able to enjoy the flowers and learn about the various bees, butterflies and other pollinators that will come to inhabit the meadow area.” Colourful species including cornflower, poppies, yellow rattle, knapweed and scabious will be sown and flower between late May and November to provide wildlife habitats throughout the summer and the autumn. Temporary fencing will be in place in the early stage of the meadow to protect the new growth and the meadow will be cut back for the winter period. Plants sown in the meadow will self-seed and continue to develop over the next few years. The work is being carried out by the Friends of St Andrews

Instructions, tools and safety gear will all be provided.” Please contact The Friends of St Andrews Park (FOSAP) at https://friendsofstandrewspark. ning.com/ The work parties are planned for the fourth Sunday of each month: June 27; July 25; August 22; September 26; and October 24 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. n FROM YOUR COUNCILLORS In Bishopston this month... ON MAY 9, we - Lily Fitzgibbon and Emma Edwards - were elected to be your new councillors in Bishopston and Ashley Down. Firstly, we want to say a huge thank you to all who voted and helped us with our campaigning and spoke to us on the doorsteps. We are delighted and honoured to have been chosen to represent you. Having grown up in Bishopston, Lily is excited to have the opportunity to work with the local community, especially young people. Emma has lived and worked in the area for many years and is looking forward to engaging more with residents, groups and

businesses here. During campaigning many of you spoke to us about your hopes and concerns for the area. We know that parking and traffic is an ongoing concern, and one we intend to take forward. We also heard of your desires for safer streets, better cycling infrastructure and the protection of green spaces. These are all issues we are keen to work on. We also know how much you love the Gloucester Road - as do we! And, we are looking at ways to ensure it carries on thriving. We also know how important local trees are to you and in particular the holm oak tree on

June, 2021

Ashley Down Road. Back in January Emma started a petition to save the oak, after a felling notice was issued. This garnered over 2,000 signatures by the time she and she submitted it to the council. Unfortunately, the petition was unsuccessful, and we were told the tree was to be felled regardless. But we have both been working alongside local tree activist groups and residents from the Down View House flats to get this decision appealed. Although the situation looked hopeless, we were delighted and surprised to see Mayor Marvin Rees post a video stating that he had found a way for the tree to be saved. Whilst we welcome this U-turn, speaking with the Bristol Tree Forum and other

activists, it would seem that his proposed plan may cause further damage, and more assurance is needed that the tree will be saved. We cannot underestimate the importance of trees, for their role in managing pollution and for the wellbeing of residents and local wildlife. We would like to give special thanks to Bristol Tree Forum, the Save The Ashley Down Oak group, and Genna from Down View House for their work on this. We look forward to keeping you up-to-date with news of the work we are doing in the area and projects we are involved with. You can get in touch with us by email us on Cllr.Lily.fitzgibbon@ bristol.gov.uk and Cllr.Emma. Edwards@bristol.gov.uk

we were as shocked as residents to hear a tree surgeon was on site one morning before residents or councillors had even been told the council was not going to offer the protection or why, and that a 12 metre tree on land of unknown ownership could be allowed to be felled by someone. We don’t think this has been dealt with well, and the council clearly needs better policies and procedures in place to manage and protect mature trees and take account of its commitments to the climate and ecological emergencies and the flood and nature benefits of green spaces and wooded river banks.

- designed to ensure a safer route to school over this fast and wide road - has already been budgeted for but hadn’t progressed since we secured its approval in late 2019. We hope there will be proposals for consultation before long.

In Redland this month... The election dust has settled and we’re both proud and delighted to be voted your two ward councillors again. Thanks for your massive vote of trust and support in choosing us again. We shall both aim to represent the ward effectively and work with others to make a positive difference to the city. Hearing your views and representing the area Calling on thousands of residents has been a pleasure, despite the staggering number of steps taken. We’ve of course heard much more about your local concerns and issues, from planning to parking, traffic and air quality to tree protection. Plus the need for the council to do much more to tackle the climate emergency. With a far larger Green Group on the council [up from 11 to 24] we hope to be a powerful influence for real action. Looking after the ward We’ve reported various issues like

the leak where Berkeley Rd meets Gloucester Rd, and the dangerous retaining wall holding up Redland Green. We’re awaiting news of the controversial development of Housing in Multiple Occupation in the ward - we’ve ensured it will be heard at a planning committee if it’s recommended for approval. Another tree being lost We’ve also liaised with the council tree officers to call for proper scrutiny of a planning application to cut down a mature tree on the banks of the Cranbrook by Elton Road. The river bank appears to be outside council or private ownership but is part of a conservation area. We’ve drawn attention to the benefits of mature trees, the need for stable river banks to provide flood protection, and the council’s declaration of an Ecological Emergency. Despite this

A crossing in sight at last! Meanwhile we have positive news at last as just before the election we heard from newly recruited officers who have finally started work on drawing up plans for the long awaited crossing of Cranbrook Road at Harcourt Hill. This project

Take part in virtual Rainbow Run and support Bristol’s children’s hospice CHILDREN’S Hospice South West (CHSW) is asking people to take part in this year’s Rainbow Run Your Way fundraiser on 19-20 June. Rainbow Run has become an event synonymous with sunny days and explosions of colour. The event has been held in Bristol since 2013 but last year, due to the pandemic, the event went virtual and still proved to be a huge success for the charity. Rainbow Run Your Way is open to anyone of any ability – it’s about having some colourful fun whilst raising money for CHSW’s Charlton Farm hospice just outside the city. Participants can choose their own route, their own distance and can complete it however they wish. It’s a chance to don a bright outfit and complete the chosen distance by running, skipping, walking,

skating, or riding and having fun along the way! CHSW hopes to raise £30,000 for Charlton Farm, which currently supports more than 200 families whose children have been diagnosed with a life limiting condition. Kiley Pearce, event fundraiser at CHSW said: “We were overwhelmed by the amount of people that got involved last year. We could see from social media that everyone really embraced the fun and colour that the Rainbow Run is all about.” It is free to take part but CHSW is asking everyone to register on its website to ensure they have access to event information and free resources. If participants raise £15 or more in sponsorship they will be sent a 30th anniversary commemorative medal after the event. For more information and

Help 'bridge the gap' RETIREE Sarah Barnes is calling on local residents from all walks of life to join her as volunteer on-line tutors and to help ‘bridge the gap’ for the UK’s 27% of disadvantaged pupils at risk of not achieving national standards in Maths and English at SAT or GCSE level. Sarah, a former headteacher living in Southmead, volunteers with Action Tutoring – a not-for-profit charity that works in partnership with UK primary and secondary state schools. She says urgent action is needed to prevent the 18 month attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their non-disadvantaged counterparts from widening further as a result of the lockdowns. “Whilst exams have been scrapped for the second year running, learning is for life and not just for exams,” Sarah said. “Good standards in English and maths in particular are crucial to progressing well in further education, employment or training. “With many of us having experienced time out from our hectic lives to pause and reflect, why not do something positive for the community and sign up to join Action Tutoring as a volunteer tutor? Together we can positively impact the life chances of the 75,000 disadvantaged children that currently leave school every year without basic qualifications in maths and English.” Within the next few months the charity’s target is to build a 1,500 strong workforce of DBS-checked volunteers across the country, trained to provide online tutoring and small-group, face-to-face tutoring. Action Tutoring currently partners with six secondary schools and nine primary schools in Bristol. To sign up to join Action Tutoring as a volunteer or to learn more, please email hello@actiontutoring.org.uk or call 0203 872 5894.

n VET'S ADVICE AS I write this it seems very early in the season to be talking about ticks but we are already seeing dogs with ticks attached so it is time to remind all about how to treat your pet to prevent these common parasites. Ticks live in both wooded and grassland areas and are becoming an increasing problem when previously we only saw them during the tick ‘seasons’ of early Spring and Autumn, we now see them for much more of the year thought to be due to our warmer climate. Ticks live in vegetation where they develop through their lifecycle from larvae to nymphs and finally adults. At this stage the adult tick will attach to a passing host burying their mouthparts into the host to feed over a few days before letting go and once again returning to the environment to lay eggs. Once attached it is possible that a tick can transmit disease, particularly Lyme disease but also now we are seeing more exotic diseases coming in from

June, 2021

Watch out for ticks

ticks abroad. It is very important that any tick is removed from a host animal as soon as possible and within 24 hours of attaching before it can transmit disease. The best way to prevent ticks on your pet is to treat regularly with a product that effectively kills ticks. We now have available very effective tick tablets which can be given monthly to prevent a tick infestation. Ideally, use tablets

rather than spot on formulations so as not to contaminate the environment with antiparasitics either by hair from the dog or from swimming. After walking your dog always check for any ticks that may be crawling over the coat looking for a good place to attach or if already attached you may need to remove them with a tick hook, see picture. Ticks initially start as a very small 1 - 2mm diameter speck which increases in size up to the size of your little finger nail over a few days once fully engorged. If you do find a tick and are not sure how to remove it please do call us to make an appointment for one of our nurses to demonstrate how to use a tick hook to remove it safely. Do not be tempted to use your fingers to crush the tick as this way you may become infected with any disease the tick could be carrying. For any further advice or to buy a set of tick hooks, please do

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Thank you for the chance to serve FIRSTLY, thank you. It’s a huge honour to be elected as your Metro Mayor, for this part of the world that I’m proud to call home. And whether you voted for me or not, I’m going to do my best for you and your family. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind since election day. The votes were counted up on the Saturday after polling day – and a big thank you to the counting staff who worked so hard to get us a result efficiently and in a covidsecure way. Then the results were announced aboard the SS Great Britain, a magnificent backdrop to take the helm on a new job! On the following Monday, I was officially sworn in as Mayor at Temple Quay and had my first meetings. I’ll be frank, I think we have some catching up to do. Because I’m not sure many people know we have a Metro Mayor at the moment locally, nationally or internationally. I want to change that, and put our area on the map. A woman I met the other day commented that it had been nice to see “from Somerset”

as a description on my interview on Good Morning Britain. We’re going to have more of that. My job is like Sadiq Khan’s in London and Andy Burnham’s in Manchester. It’s time for Fishponds, Frome Valley or Filton to lead the national conversation! I said during the campaign that my first priority was jobs, and that is why I will be holding a jobs and skills summit in my first 100 days in office. I’m already having conversations with local businesses and education providers about how we can build back better from the pandemic. If you have ideas, do let me know. My politics have always been red and green. We are in the midst of a climate emergency and I plan to bring my knowledge and experience as a former Environment Minister to the table. That’s why later this year I will launch my ‘Green Recovery Plan’. You might have also heard about my plans to make the West of England the bee and pollinator capital of the UK. I know I have a lot of people to meet,

reading to do, budgets to scrutinise and government ministers to challenge. I want to work in a constructive and cooperative way. What matters is that we secure the best for our area. And, just as a final thought, I think my dog might be more popular than me. Angel has also been on TV and got her own hashtag #dansdog – I’ll try not to let it go to her head! This is such an exciting time, but I want to end where I began. For the chance to serve – thank you.

n VINEYARD NEWS with INGRID BATES

Hospitality venues - we're rooting for you! WORK has gone from zero to full on with restaurants preparing to reopen and several hundred baby vines arriving all in the same week. I’ve been splitting my time between labelling, making wine deliveries and repetitive vine planting in the vineyard. Our new rosé release seems to be going down well which is always nice to see and we’ve been trying to find the quickest and easiest way to plant a vine. Conventional spades don’t go very deep so we use a special spade to open a deep groove or a large 4cm attachment on a hand held drill. We don’t actually dig a hole with the spade as this would take too long and be too tiring. Vines are pretty tough and as long as their roots get a good few inches into the ground they usually do well. When the baby vines arrive in the post from Germany they are

bare rooted, waxy twigs which look very peculiar. The wax covers the point where the roots are grafted onto the fruit top. The idea is to choose a rootstock that is suited to your soil type because often the original fruit roots might not grow in quite the way you’d like or may be susceptible to disease. Rootstocks have very unglamorous names like SO4, 125AA and Fercal - some are suited to clay, loamy soils and others to dry, chalky soils. This year we’re planting varieties called Regent, Divico and Cabernet Noir on SO4 rootstocks. I get quite excited about the future possibilities of red wines in the UK so am keen to see how some of the more experimental varieties do. The key thing with all these varieties is that they don’t need chemical mildew sprays which is all part of my sustainability drive for the long term.

On the wine front we’ve had delays getting our hands on the new wine I mentioned a few months ago but it WILL be released soon! We’ve been delivering to all our usual Bristol and Bath restaurants and shops and sending wine up to London as well. It’s been so lovely to feel

a tiny part of hospitality getting back on its feet. It makes me feel proud to be part of the Bristol food scene. hello@dunleavyvineyards.co.uk www.dunleavyvineyards.co.uk @DYvineyards (twitter) dunleavy vineyards (facebook & instagram)

n MAYOR'S VIEW

Second time around IT is a deep honour to have been re-elected. My thanks go out to everyone who campaigned and voted for me, encouraged, endorsed and supported me in the many ways people have. We have spent my first weeks since being re-elected planning ahead, reconnecting with city partners and our regional, national and international allies, reviewing Bristol City Council’s corporate strategy, meeting council staff, refining our city priorities and getting on with delivery. It has been a busy time. The themes we will be working to over the next three years are shaped by the following: Bristol is a city of contrasts and contradictions. We have great wealth and opportunity living alongside poverty and hopelessness. The challenge of inequality will become more significant following Covid because it’s the most vulnerable who have been hit first and hardest, and it is they who will be least well placed to participate

in the recovery. Providing quality jobs, affordable homes to underpin and inclusive economic recovery must be at the heart of all we do. This is not only an issue of social justice. Unequal societies waste talent, cost more in terms of public services and are more unstable. Building a city in which everyone has hope is in our collective enlightened self interest. We need to meet the economic challenge in the face of the climate and ecological emergencies. Decarbonising and building nature in the energy, transport, housing and other city systems we depend on is crucial. The pace and scale of change we need cannot be delivered one lifestyle decision or project at a time. This will take a wholesale city redesign. Our climate and ecological strategies set the framework and working through the City Office and One City Plan we will be able to approach this challenge as a whole city. There is great opportunity in this. Investors are looking for

Alpine LANDSCAPING

Established family firm with 25 years experience

opportunity to put money into decarbonisation and places that are more resilient to future global shocks, be they social, economic or environmental. We in Bristol already have a strong global reputation for the work we have done to put the UN’s Global Sustainable Development Goals at the heart of our One City Plan. The opportunity is to win investment, generate jobs and build an economy that is diverse, more resilient and minimises the contribution it makes to the likelihood of future shocks. We also know that we are not just taking these challenges on for the 466,000 people who call Bristol their home today. Bristol is forecast to grow by around 100,000 people by the middle of this century. For that greater population we must ensure Bristol provides inclusion (tackling inequality) and reduces impact (carbon and impact on nature) today. Our plans must

The Mayor’s View Each month Bristol mayor Marvin Rees shares his views with Bishopston Voice

take into account the increasing numbers of people who will grow up here, and travel to Bristol for work, education and leisure. I was sent an incredible quote from Raymond Williams during the campaign by Professor Tom Sperlinger at the University of Bristol: “To be truly radical is to make hope possible rather than despair convincing.” This is a huge challenge. But it also presents a huge opportunity. I hope we can all hold that observation tight.

n NATURE WATCH With Dawn Lawrence AS I write I am still drying off following a morning surveying Bristol’s woodlands in the rain. Carpets of ramsons (better known as wild garlic), thick as drifted snow, made up for the damp seeping through my clothes and luckily the hail shower was too light to damage the flowers. Noting the lack of insects, I thought of the bat I had seen in Bishopston a few evenings before. The light had been draining from the sky, taking with it the colour from the gardens, when a small, flickering shape darted overhead, black against the greyness. The flutter of its wings and the sharp tacking flight between the trees was unmistakable. In wet weather, without insects on the wing, the bats are left hungry. It was probably a common pipistrelle; their wingspan is only 20cm and their body-length just 4cm but they manage to look bigger in flight. In spring the females gather into maternity roosts, often in a roof-space, where they have their babies together. Like most bats, they can hang

Pipistrelle bat in flight by Barracuda 1983 upside down (even giving birth upside down and gathering the newborn to them using their wings which fact gives me a new respect for these amazing creatures). But pipistrelles also tuck into cracks and under tiles and can be hard to spot. The tell-tale sign is their droppings, like little brown grains of rice. Pipistrelles give birth in June to co-ordinate with the summer peak of insect activity. Baby bats, like all mammals, suckle from their mothers, waiting together in the

roost whilst the mothers forage. The babies develop quickly, flying at four weeks and catching insects on the wing for themselves at six weeks. Meanwhile the males have been establishing hunting territories. The male pipistrelle holds his territory during the breeding period, which is July to September, and, when not echolocating his prey, he attracts females by “singing” a special social song whilst he is active overnight – much as the blackbird does, when

he takes over in the morning! Older people might remember a time many years ago when a drive through country lanes sometimes required stops to wipe the windscreen of insects. So many moths might be out that, hard as it is to imagine, it was like driving through heavy snow. It is a sign of the general insect decline that we have lost these moth snowstorms, largely due to widespread changes in farming practices including increased pesticide use and it is hardly surprising that bats have also declined significantly since those days (though destruction of roosts is also a big factor). Consequently, our gardens are now much better for insects, as I have noted here before, than the average country field. Another good reason to keep the pesticides in the cupboard, and only use them as a last resort. And the good news is that British bats are mostly no longer in decline but beginning to build their numbers again. Happy bat spotting!

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

I relish the chance to make a difference

I

AM delighted to be writing today as the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset. A huge responsibility has been placed on my shoulders and, a week on, I am still incredibly humbled that local people gave me their vote. I absolutely relish the chance to get stuck in and to make a difference in all the villages, parishes, towns and cities across the force area. I thought this would be a good opportunity to let you know a little bit about me and my background; I spent over 30 years as an Army officer and served alongside police across the globe, gaining an understanding of their

role and sharing the risks they faced. As a result, I feel I have a good understanding of service life and the pressures those protecting communities face. Following my military service, I became deputy leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council and also sat on the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Panel, which supported and scrutinised the actions, decisions and performance of PCC Sue Mountstevens. In my role as PCC, I will be focusing on delivering a more efficient and effective police service, and I look forward to explaining in the future how together my office, officers and staff will be reassuring, refocusing and rebuilding a safer community

for Avon and Somerset. This week, I have started to build on my understanding of how the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and Avon and Somerset Police operates, as well as being able to meet numerous policing teams who are based at Express Park in Bridgwater. I want to meet as many officers and staff as possible to understand how I can make their jobs more effective and efficient so you – local people – receive the best police service. Into the summer, I intend to be out and about meeting local people and communities groups to understand your concerns and how I can help.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford If you feel your community group or local service would benefit from me visiting, please do let us by using the general enquiry form on our website www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov. uk/contact/contact-us

New chair and deputy take the reins at Gloucestershire Cricket

FOLLOWING the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club Members’ Annual General Meeting held on April 27, David Jones has officially become Club Chair with Steve Nelson appointed to the Deputy Chair position. David, who has been a member of the executive board for the past seven years, was elected to the role at the executive board meeting on 28 January. He succeeds the retiring John Hollingdale, who has been the club’s chair for the previous two years and a member of the Board for a further two years. After a board level career spanning nearly 38 years at the John Lewis Partnership, David is now an independent non-executive director of the British Horse Racing Authority, a trustee of the Zoological Society of London and is also a director of the Watercress Line, a heritage railway in Hampshire. Steve Nelson has been appointed to become the Club’s Deputy Chair and will play an important role in supporting David in his new position. He

June, 2021 has been a co-opted member of the board of the club for the past two years. Steve is a former professional basketball player, capped by England on 18 occasions, and is chief executive of the West of England Sport Trust (Wesport), an Active Partnership, which focuses on creating the conditions to allow people to become more physically active and enjoy the benefits that an active lifestyle can bring. He holds a number of non-executive roles within the sport sector and is well respected across the region and nationally for the work he has done in enabling sport to play a transformational role in peoples’ lives. He also works closely with Sport England, a major stakeholder of both Wesport and the ECB; most recently playing a leadership role within the Active Partnerships network, helping shape their collective and growing commitment to tackling racism and racial inequality. Outside work, Steve is a volunteer basketball coach at junior national league level, with his team crowned under 18 men’s national champions in 2011. He

has developed and supported more than a dozen players that have gone on to represent England or GB, including his daughter Kyla and son Luke – both have captained their age group national teams and have earned scholarships to Division 1 colleges in the USA. Luke is now playing professionally in Germany and is a GB regular. Rebecca Watkin will continue her role as Honorary Treasurer of the club. Rebecca, a qualified chartered accountant since 2014, has been in the post for the past three years. She is the chief finance officer of a multi-academy trust in Bristol, consisting of four special schools and two alternative provisions. She is responsible for all operational aspects of the trust: finance, HR, IT and premises. Outside of work she runs a Brownie pack. In other personnel changes, Mark Brunt, Secretary of the Gloucestershire Exiles and former editor of the Exiles’ Cricket Magazine, was elected to the executive board and Sarah Blowen, Chair of the Gloucestershire Exiles, was elected a Vice President.
