Charlotte returns as our MP

Charlotte Leslie has started her second term as our Member of Parliament.

Pages 2&3 Henleaze and WoT to be ‘partners’ Henleaze and Westbury will retain identity after boundary shake-up is finalised.

Library campaigners have visited Westbury events, distributing information and talking to hundreds of people including concerned parents. Pictured at Elmlea School’s Spring Fair are (left to right) Rosanne Carwardine, Alan Preece, Alan Aburrow and Sheila Preece

Every response counts The campaign to save Westbury Library is entering its final month. This is not some vague threat. The position is that Bristol City Council has a recommendation from its officers that the library should close in 2016, and the community has until June 30th to protest. And while the campaign team are delighted with the response so far, there is no room for complacency.

The most important thing anyone can do is to complete the City Council’s survey. And in doing so, the most important responses are to Questions 1a and 2 (see Page 9) Survey forms are available at the library and can be returned there. Or the survey can be completed online at: www.bristol.gov.uk/ page/leisure-and-culture/getinvolved-libraries-consultation

Every response counts which means that every member of every household, including children, should be encouraged to complete a separate survey form and respond separately online. The campaign team’s final push effectively began on Election Day when they set up a stand outside the library which was being used as a polling station. It was not on library land. Column ... Charlotte Leslie MP

No time to dwell on election result The dust’s settled, the calm after the storm and all those other cliches - if only they were true. An election campaign is bruising, competing with opponents while trying to stay positive and avoiding the verbal unpleasantries. For six weeks you feel as if you are in one of those shark cages ... being attacked from all sides, exhilarated but also quite looking forward to it all ending (happily)! It is not easy and I suspect most of my new colleagues and opponents would say much the same. The well-documented vandalism attacks on my family home proved to be the low point of the campaign but it also made me determined to battle on – through argument rather than spraypaint and drills – to make sure democracy is not trampled on by the will of the hooligan. I tried to make sure I put forward an positive agenda based on things that have been

achieved and things I still want to get done. At times I was attacked, seemingly for being a ‘community campaigner’ - a

strange criticism for an MP whose main role is to represent constituents. Whatever happens, I will not deviate from that. I want to effect change in bristol north West, not be remembered as an MP who disappeared to Westminster only to return every five years to deliver leaflets and plead with people for my job. So I have been given the privilege of being MP for this fantastic constituency for another five years and I want to build on the things we have already achieved. As you might expect, the Henbury Loop is high on my agenda. It concerns me that we still seem to be a fair way from having this amazing opportunity realised but I am determined to ramp things up and work with everyone who has a stake in this to make sure it happens. Bristol being Bristol, transport in all its forms will dominate – smart card technology for public transport

and common sense on speed limits and residents’ parking is sorely needed. In BS9 the libraries will be a continued issue. The residents have made it clear they want their library … the task is to ensure the service remains as relevant as it can or the danger remains this issue could return again and again. We will also be pushing forward the Royal College of Teaching, which received government support in the last parliament. Teachers need to claim their profession just as surgeons do and the college will give them the chance. And our wonderful pubs – legislation now exists to ensure they are not bulldozed at the first opportunity and I will continue to be a pub champion and if need be, sample the beer! There is so much to do … so I suppose I had better go off and, in the words of my campaign slogan, ‘get stuff done’!

“I’ve found this lump” One of the most frequent things that crops up during consultations is lumps and bumps. We often see animals because owners that have found a new lump whilst stroking or grooming their pet, or sometimes because they have noticed the pet licking or bothering at the area. The first important thing to know about lumps is that it can be very hard for us to definitively diagnosis what the mass is from look and feel alone. Sometimes we have suspicions about what it could be, but most of the time samples will need to be taken to investigate further. One of the tests we routinely perform is a fine needle aspirate (FNA). This involves inserting a needle into the lump to draw some cells off for us to smear onto a microscope slide. This slide often gets sent to an external lab for pathologists to examine. The result tells us what type of cells we have aspirated (drawn out) and gives us an indication as to whether there are any suspicious ones there or not. This can be useful when deciding whether we need to surgically remove the mass and may also help us plan our surgical approach, as some masses need larger margins of healthy tissue than others when they are removed.

Another test would be to biopsy the mass. This can involve taking small sections of the lump to send away or can involve removal of the entire mass, depending on factors such as the size, location and the results of the FNA. The tissue is sent to the lab for examination and the pathologists can then give us a much clearer idea of what type of mass we are dealing with, which enables us to give you a prognosis and further treatment options if required. Owners can help us to, as a history can be quite important. Things to mention include when you first noticed the mass and whether it has grown at all since you first saw it. Also does it cause your pet discomfort, are there any other masses we should know about or is your pet unwell at all? You can also help us to find smaller masses by clipping some hair off in the vicinity of the lump at home, as frequently we have owners that struggle to find the lump again when they are here in the consult room! Above all, don’t be frightened about finding a lump. The best thing to do is to get your pet checked over so that we can discuss the options with you and start treatment (if needed!) sooner rather than later. Ring us on 01173355999 if you would like to make an appointment.

Last month we showed pictures of two developments in progress in Westburyon-Trym. This is what’s happened since. The filling station and convenience store on Falcondale Road had closed and had become a building site, causing Westbury motorists to search elsewhere for their fuel. Happily the transformation is complete. As you can see (above) the forecourt has re-opened and the convenience store has become M&S Simply Food incorporating a Wild Bean Cafe. The arch (above right) is part of the new entrance to Canford Park just around the corner from the library. We can thank the Westbury-on-Trym Society for the striking design of the arch, and for donating the two benches beyond the temporary gates, above. Temporary? Well, there is a good chance that they will be replaced at some stage by a more handsome pair. We will publish details when we get them.

It’s all about Oakley eye wear in June It’s all about Oakley eye wear in June. There are many great sports sunglasses brands but the one that captures most attention is Oakley. Even my father-inlaw who “doesn’t care about the name” only has Oakley sunglasses for cycling. Indeed if I look at my sportier friends eye wear, they all seem to be drawn to Oakley because sports eye wear is what Oakley do best. For example all Oakley ophthalmic frames have specialist plastic end tips that grip more as you sweat. Glad I wasn’t in that research team. The great advantage of buying Oakley’s from Lynne Fernandes Optometrists is that we know which designs suit your face shapes (we can even choose from 3 different nose fitting sizes!), we will explain which models are more adaptable for your sport and we will bespoke them for you: and that’s all included in the price. In addition if you need a prescription, we will advise on the best lens for your sport and your prescription. The image in the ad this month is Mark Cavendish modelling an Oakley Milestone frame. This is made out of Nanomatter, an acetate developed by Oakley that is super light and super flexible. They claim lighter than titanium, so for the comfort, style and practicality a great choice! Oakley prescription sunglasses can be glazed to a huge prescription range, but only by specialists. We can create the same look and finish to almost any prescription as a nonprescription Oakley Oakley end tips The more you sweat, the more they grip! Oakley HDPolarized A headache from glare can ruin your day. Driving in glare can be risky, and road cyclists know how glare can hide potholes and other dangers. Oakley developed HDPolarized lenses for elite athletes but their technology serves everyone because glare doesn’t care if you’re a sport champion, weekend warrior or just someone who enjoys the sun. Library campaign

9

Below left, Rosanne Carwardine explains how to respond to the library survey to a parent at Elmlea School. Below, Library campaigner Roger Smith and his team were judged to be operating within the law on election day.

Westbury top of the library league

From Page 1 team had been careful to set up on the nearby grass verge which is public land. They handed out campaign leaflets, the council’s information booklet Libraries for the future and the council’s survey forms. They were also careful not to engage people until they had voted, though an official was worried enough to summon the police. After checking the situation the police were happy that the campaigners were operating well within the law. “It was a stunning day,” Councillor Geoff Gollop told

Voice. “We issued about 750 campaign leaflets which far exceeded our expectations. All in all, very positive.” They followed up with a presence and more leaflet distribution at school fairs at Elmlea and St Ursula’s. Volunteers are delivering campaign leaflets door-to-door throughout Westbury and a day of action is planned for June 6th. “The reasons given by Bristol City Council for closure are completely unacceptable,” say the campaigners. “If you haven’t got a library ticket, apply now at Westbury Library” (ie before it’s too late).

Key questions in library survey When completing the library survey, the key questions are 1a and 2. They go to the heart of the argument about whether Westbury Library should live or die. Bristol City Council has decided that there are two categories of libraries with the right to live: Group 1: Libraries already delivering to a high service standard Group 2: Libraries needing development Seven libraries, say the council, ought to die because they do not fit within these two groups in terms of their potential “to deliver the full core service and local offer”. These seven are: Clifton, Eastville, Marksbury Road, Redland, Sea Mills, Westbury and Wick Road. If you want Westbury Library to live, answer ‘No’ to Question

1 on the survey and give your reasons. The campaign leaflet provides 10 useful facts which will help including: • Westbury is the fourth busiest of Bristol’s 28 libraries in borrowings • Westbury has n excellent children’s corner and popular children’s activities • Difficult to see how Henleaze Library can hope to serve the three communities of Westbury, Stoke Bishop and Henleaze • Fifteen book groups use Westbury as collection point for their reading • Many residents see a local library as a safe haven for small children and vulnerable adults which could not e served by ‘libraries at a distance’ Then go to Q2 and say that Westbury Library does qualify to be in Groups 1 or 2 (the right to live) for the reasons stated in Q1.

Last month Voice reported on the high turnout for the library consultation meeting called by Bristol City Council. The meeting room at the Coombe Dingle sports complex was packed, with many people failing to get in and trying to follow proceedings from the stairs or an adjoining room. It was one of 14 library consultation meetings across Bristol, based on Neighbourhood Partnership areas. The council has published summaries of public questions and comments at all 14 meetings including the number of attendees, and it makes for interesting reading. The official attendance for the Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and WoT meeting is put at 216, though it was probably more. The total from the other 13 meetings was 156.

Education Skype helps to bring ‘Song of the Whale’ into class for maths lessons PUPILS from Clifton High School recently took part in a live Skype session with a team of marine biologists. In their mathematics lesson, the students have been studying data from the ‘Song of the Whale’ research boat, where the biologists are based, looking at how its position is charted using mathematics, exploring co-ordinates and how the locations of whales and porpoises are tracked. The boys and girls had their questions answered by a research scientist and also had a video tour of the boat. Dr Alison Neill, head of Clifton High School, said: “Mathematics and problem solving are essential tools for our young people and with the new GCSE curriculum being introduced;

standards and expectations inevitably will increase. “We want all our boys and girls to be fully prepared for these changes and the children

have benefited enormously from specialists who have current and relevant expertise. “As with all our teaching the aim is to make learning easily ac-

13 cessible and relevant, to further enhance the curiosity, creative mind and confidence of our pupils in a fun way. “Our work with the Song of the Whale has been a brilliant example of this.” Clifton High Senior School has a reputation for providing its pupils with high standards of mathematics teaching, with one former pupil, Katie Gardener, gaining A* grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. She is now reading Mathematics at the University of Oxford. Over the last five years, 92 percent of GCSE students at Clifton High have received A* to C grades. Education

Preparing students for employment Bristol Free School, with only four year groups, has been awarded the Employability Chartermark. Students were praised by Headteacher Richard Clutterbuck for the impression they left with assessors from the Chartermark. “In spite of not having any any students of an eligible age for employment, the school has been deemed an organisation which is preparing people for the labour market,” he said. “Credit must go to our students who, quite frankly, blew our assessors away with their understanding and commitment to the purpose of 6 degrees of aspiration. Well done, I am very proud of them.”

End of a successful first year for schools’ joint infant set-up Redland High Infants, with QEH, is about to complete its first year, having opened the doors of its purpose built classrooms in September 2014. The new initiative from the two schools has been hugely successful, with some parents already signing their children up for 2018 to guarantee a place. The school accepts children from the age of three. As they reach the end of Year 2, girls naturally progress to Redland High Junior School and boys transfer to QEH Junior School.

Make Some Noise for Mad Science!

T

his year Mad Science are proud to be supporting Global’s Make Some Noise children’s charity. Global’s Make Some Noise helps disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. These youngsters may be affected by illness, disability, bereavement or lack of opportunity. In support of this great cause Mad Science will be donating 5% of profits from all of our Summer Holiday Camps hosted this summer to the fund. This money will then go towards creating fantastic opportunities for children and young people in the community. Our very own Rocket Rachel will also be tackling a tremendous challenge to raise awareness of the charity’s work by heading on a massive adventure, and trekking across the Grand Canyon! So by taking part in our

action-packed programme of Summer Camps this year you can provide your children with an unforgettable experience, whilst also making a different to those less fortunate. We will also be taking additional donations for the charity through our new online booking system. Keep an eye out for the Make Some Noise button on there. We wish Rocket Rachel all the best in her mission and hope that with your help we can make this campaign a real success! You can follow her progress through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter where we will be posting updates on targets, training and the trek itself. www.madsciencebristol. co.uk Facebook.com/MadScienceBristol twitter: @MadSciBristol

News It’s official – Henleaze and Westbury become partners

June, 2015 Pictured from left, Cllr Geoff Gollop, Cllr Glenise Morgan, Alan Aburrow and Hilary Long

500 letters showed strength of feeling

There was a collective sigh of relief when the Local Government Boundary Commission published its final recommendations for new electoral arrangements for Bristol City Council. Fears that the centre of Westbury-on-Trym would become part of Henleaze, and the remainder would be represented by one councillor instead of two, caused an outrage. At present the two wards of Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze each has two councillors. After a 10-week consultation period which included discussions co-ordinated by

the Westbury-on-Trym Society, the response to the boundary commission was that the whole of Westbury-on-Trym should be joined with Henleaze as a ‘partnership ward’ represented by three councillors. Nearly 500 letters in favour of the new ‘partnership ward’ were sent to the boundary commission. This compromise solution was accepted and forms part of a draft order to be laid before both Houses of Parliament. If both Houses are satisfied the draft order will be ‘made’ and the new ward will come into effect in time for the council

elections in May 2016. For council election purposes it will be called ‘Westbury-onTrym and Henleaze’. For every other purpose nothing will change. The bigger picture is that Bristol will continue to be represented by 70 city councillors, but adjustments to ward boundaries mean that there will be 5 three-member wards (including Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze), 26 two-member wards and 3 single member wards across the city.

“It is good that our opinions do get listened to,” said Councillor Geoff Gollop when the boundary commission announced it had changed its mind. “As I live in Henleaze and represent Westbury I am well placed to know how much the two communities have in common. “I am delighted that the boundary commission listened to the strongly-argued views in support of a combined ward, and the submission of almost 500 letters showed just how strongly residents feel. “The population growth in Bristol as a whole meant that we, as an area, has to lose one councillor, but any attempt to split the combined ward would have produced anomalies that would have been impossible to resolve. “It was very positive to find that that the Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym Societies worked together to arrive at a workable recommendation.” Henleaze Councillor Glenise Morgan acknowledges that the original proposal from the boundary commission, which would have split Westbury-onTrym shopping centre from the rest of the village, was totally inappropriate. “Henleaze and Westbury have much in common, and although the reduction from four councillors to three will be a challenge, it is right and just that the inequalities between inner city ward populations and those on the city outskirts have been addressed,” she said. “We already work with councillors and representatives of both Westbury-on-Trym and Stoke Bishop through our Neighbourhood Partnership and I look forward to the strengthening of these links. “My one regret is that Westbury Park, which has a strong community, remains divided between Henleaze and Redland.“ The Henleaze, Stoke

Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership remained neutral through the 10week consultation period. But Vice Chair Alan Aburrow praised the Westbury-on-Trym Society for “a good campaign”. It would be business as usual until the May 2016 elections when voters in Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym vote together for the first time in a council election and choose three councillors between them, he said.

Hilary Long, Chair of the Westbury-on-Trym Society, thanked residents for rising to the occasion with their letters to the boundary commission. “Westbury and Henleaze are distinct communities in their own right and will remain complementary to each other in shopping facilities and local services as well as our histories,” she said. “However we also share many social activities, parks, schools, sports clubs and church

congregations, all of which give us friendships and common purposes on behalf of all our residents. We shall look forward to sharing our councillors too. “It is particularly apt that we saved Westbury from fragmentation as we anticipate the anniversary in 2017 of 1300 years since our community was founded,” she added. Valerie Bishop, Chair of the Henleaze Society, said: “The Henleaze Society trustees discussed the draft proposals

17

and agreed that the only realistic solution, without redrawing the proposed boundaries of all of the north Bristol wards, was to have a three-councillor ward. “By accepting this solution, the Henleaze Society trustees will continue to work with local residents and councillors to ensure that Henleaze remains a good place in which to live. “Going forwards, we will also work more in partnership with Westbury-on-Trym community organisations.”

Profile - William Goodchild Composer, orchestrator, conductor William Goodchild of Henleaze is recognised as a major force in the world of music. He combines the roles of composer, orchestrator and conductor, producing music for film, television and the concert hall. Not to mention the fact that he teaches Music for Film and Television at the University of Bristol and gives seminars on the subject. He has built a strong reputation locally as guest conductor with the Bristol Ensemble, Bristol’s professional chamber orchestra, and as guest conductor for the last 14 years with the Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra, a flourishing amateur orchestra with a well-established reputation for excellence. The orchestra has musicians come from all parts of the city including Henleaze and Westbury. One of William’s current projects is the Metropolitan Orchestra’s Summer Concert at St George’s, Bristol on June 20th (7.30pm). It will be an all-French programme, sponsored by Tickbox Marketing, featuring Russian-born pianist Pavel Timofejevsky who will play Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. As well as the Ravel, the orchestra will perform Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite No 1and Berlioz’s popular Symphony Fantastique. We asked William how the orchestra chooses the music for concerts. “It’s a complex process,” he said. “First and foremost we want to choose a programme that the audience will really enjoy. It may contain a familiar work or two and perhaps something a little less familiar or even newly composed. “We also want to choose works that are interesting and challenging for the orchestra to rehearse and play. “Choosing a soloist is important,” William continued. “The orchestra likes to work with emerging young professional soloists – in this case Pavel Timofejevsky. “Having chosen the soloist we will talk to them about which work they’d like to perform.

“This may have an impact on other works chosen for the concert

“Once everything is considered the final decision comes down to me as conductor.”

News Full houses for St Alban’s Players St Alban’s Players in Westbury Park performed Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking to full and enthusiastic houses over three nights at St Alban’s Hall. Relatively Speaking was the first of Ayckbourn’s plays to be a major hit in the West End. It’s a delightful and funny tangle of deceit and misunderstanding with mistaken identity and motivation at its heart. Director Chris Morison created two memorable sets - the bedsit and the garden - and came up with a clever way of making a quick change between the two, despite cramped backstage and wings. He also depended on a well practised and energetic stage manager and crew. The cast was as follows: Ginny – Pamela Moline Greg – David Evans Philip – Adrian Brown Sheila – Gill Cowen

Under Chris’s direction the cast presented well-rounded, believable characters and found the maximum number of laughs in this comedy drama. “This is my second Ayckbourn production as director and designer,” said Chris. “I was delighted the set and scene change got its own applause, but that the actors

Could you be a Slimming World consultant? My name is Kelly and I joined Slimming World as a member in 2006. I was fed up with not being able to buy the lovely clothes I wanted to wear. I saw photos of myself at my Mum’s wedding and couldn’t believe it was really me – how big I looked and how miserable I had become. So I decided to take action… I looked up my nearest Slimming World group online and went the very same week. I’m not a brilliant cook, so was very wary that I would be not be able to follow the plan. My Consultant, Anna, was lovely and reassured me that it would fit in with my lifestyle, and that they would help me in group each week to find things I could eat. I went on to lose five stone and felt amazing! I felt I was me again, and could not believe how easy it had been. Slimming World is now a part of my life. I became a Consultant and now run a busy group, helping and inspiring

other people to do what I did… to lose weight and feel amazing again. Who would have thought joining Sliming World to lose weight would change my life... It also changed my career path and I would like to offer you the opportunity I was given to find out more... We’re are looking for special people to join our ever-growing team of Consultants in the local area, who are either past or present members, people who have a positive outlook and who genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. you feel you have the energy, drive and enthusiasm; if you enjoy the satisfaction of learning new skills, then this prestigious and rewarding role could be the best thing in the world for you. Being a Slimming World Consultant offers: An excellent income and flexible hours that fit around family life. On average, Consultants earn between £100-£400 for working 10-20 flexible hours per week. June, 2015 Westbury-on-Trym’s annual Community Fair continues to grow, and last month’s event attracted an estimated 2,000 people to the two stallholder areas outside the Parish Church and at the nearby GP Surgery. Many visitors also supported the third attraction – refreshments in the Methodist Church Hall. Organiser Clare Waggett told Voice: “The Community Fair has been evolving for six years now. The Parish and Methodist Churches organise and support the event, and we invite local people to promote or fundraise for their cause or charity. “It gives them an opportunity to liaise and work with each other and engage with the wider local community.” Regular stallholders include the Westbury-on-Trym Air Cadets, Cambodian Orphanage, Guides, Westbury Garden and Allotment Association and SuSWoT (Sustainable Westburyon-Trym). “Each year I am very keen to involve more and different groups, subject to space, and was

Young visitors brought along their own teddy, or adopted one at the fair, and allowed them to be strapped into a harness, raised by pulley to the top of the tower at Holy Trinity and parachuted down. They all returned to earth safely except one who fell out of

his harness on to the church roof. Fortunately he was rescued and reunited with his young owner Ethan. In addition to the stalls there was entertainment from Scottish Dancers, the Parish Church Choir, Westbury Singers and Westbury Academy recorder group. Clare added: “The value is absolutely in the community working and sharing together, and the churches really love being at the heart of it. “I always ask stallholders to let me know how much they raise jut so that I can have a view of the financial impact, and I think the collective total this year is around the £4,500 mark.” The date for next year’s Community Fair is May 7th 2016. News St Peter’s medical director retires Hundreds of friends of St Peter’s Hospice in Westbury, Henleaze and throughout Bristol have been saying their farewells to Medical Director Dr Carole Dacombe who has retired after 25 years of service. A special retirement tea party was held at the hospice in Brentry where Dr Dacombe (61) paid tribute to the “huge commitment” by staff at St Peter’s to the people of Bristol. “The people of Bristol have in turn given that commitment back to the hospice by supporting us,” she said. “We only get about 20 per cent funding from the NHS and the rest comes from the people of Bristol.” She also praised the support she had received throughout her career from her husband David and their children Peter, a OppositeDr Carole Dacombe (front centre) surrounded by friends and colleagues at her retirement party at St Peter’s.

Dr Anjali Mullick succeeds Dr Dacombe as Medical Director. trainee orthopaedic surgeon, and Jenny, a dietician. She added: “I have learned from every single patient I have met. I have learned from them as human beings, and from their family relationships and how they work together to deal with the difficult situation they are in. “You continue to be amazed

by people’s courage and resilience, and their amazing ability to deal with their situation, even when they don’t think that they can deal with it.” Simon Caraffi CEO St Peters Hospice, which caters for more than 870,000 people in the Bristol area, said that there were mixed emotions at Dr Dacombe’s departure. “There is sadness at the departure of one of the most significant individuals in the life of St Peter’s,” he said, “but also pleasure in being able to celebrate Carole’s wonderful achievements. “During her time at St Peter’s she has been involved in caring for tens of thousands of patients with life-limiting illness, and it is no exaggeration therefore to say that she has made a huge personal contribution to the wellbeing of the people of Greater Bristol. Carole has personified professional excellence, boundless energy and selfless commitment.

“There are numerous doctors, nurses and other health professionals who have benefited from her tuition and guidance, and all of us at St Peter’s will miss her. “But equally we want to wish her a supremely well-deserved, long and healthy retirement – knowing Carole we doubt it will be relaxing!” Dr Dacombe’s successor as Medical Director at St Peter’s is Dr Anjali Mullick who comes to Bristol from St Joseph’s Hospice in the London Borough of Hackney where she was Clinical Lead. Dr Mullick qualified from Cardiff University in 2000. She completed her specialist training in palliative medicine in 2008 and joined St Joseph’s as a consultant that year. She has a Master in the Ethics of Cancer and Palliative Care and has a special interest in training health professionals in advanced communication skills.

Be Yourself Only Better!

At Westbury Trym and Tone we have ‘Be Yourself Only Better’ in large letters across the largest wall in our gym. My father helped me paint it when he came over from America to help me get settled after separating from my ex-husband. It’s a reminder to me of how much he cares. Sometimes people tell me their interpretation of these words feels negative or judgemental. I personally find these words inspiring. They tell me I don’t have to; be like other people, be a size 10, never eat cake or chocolate, enjoy what others enjoy, dislike what others dislike, be quiet and not express my opinions, keep a stiff upper lip and so on. They tell me it’s ok to be me and in accepting myself I can focus on healthy habits. Being better for me is about being free to; enjoy life, enjoy people, experience nature, appreciate my body as it is and take better care of it. It’s about being graceful in the face of life’s ups and downs. It’s about knowing when I need help and asking for it. It’s about feeling my emotions and accepting them, positive or negative, as a normal. It’s about listening to others and letting their perspective open up my world of understanding, possibility and love. I hope they might inspire you too.

Record attendance at garden club to hear TV guru Joe Swift Joe Swift, one of television’s favourite gardening gurus, dropped in on Henleaze Garden Club on his way to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. He was special guest at the club’s monthly meeting at St Monica’s Hall in Westbury-onTrym, and entertained a packed house with ‘Joe’s Garden Design Approach’. With the aid of plans, diagrams, pictures and humour, he crammed 25 years of garden designing into 45 minutes – plus an action-packed Q&A session. Projects varied from small suburban back gardens, including the first he owned in Hackney, to his most ambitious project, the £250,000 garden which he designed for the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show and which won him a coveted Chelsea Gold Medal. Before he started he popped up behind the counter to help serve a range of plants donated

Henleaze Garden Club is limited to 200 members and currently has a waiting list, but non-members can pay for attendance at monthly meetings. “Because of Joe’s high profile we had a record attendance tonight,” said club Chair Andy Harrison. “We were thrilled that he came to talk to us before starting his TV duties at Malvern the next day.” Next on the agenda is a talk by Bob Brown, owner of Eveshambased Cotswold Garden Flowers. His subject – ‘A bucket of stuff: easy and unusual perennials – how to select them and grow them well.’ Opposite page, not to be sniffed at – the plant sale is always popular at Henleaze Garden Club but especially when Joe Swift is behind the counter. He is pictured with club chair Andy Harrison. Right, Joe Swift also signed copies of his books for winners of the club’s regular raffle.

Advertising Feature Inheritance Tax Planning – Learning Zone (Part Two)

T

HIS is the second part of a new Learning Zone series covering aspects of Inheritance Tax (IHT) Planning. Taking a step back for a moment, for most of your IHT planning will not be an end in itself but a component part of an estate preservation exercise. As such, any planning will have to take into account not simply IHT mitigation but ensuring as the primary objective your financial well-being, the family and others you wish to benefit, together with the impact of capital gains tax (CGT) on any lifetime gifts that you may be contemplating as part of your estate planning strategy. A starting point for much estate planning is to ensure that your Will is both up to date and tax efficient with a Lasting Powers of Attorney at least considered. If estate preservation is the objective, the effects of the potential need for Long Term Care in the future should not be overlooked. There is no point in having the perfect IHT plan if your assets are swallowed up by care fees.

A sound approach to IHT planning focuses on planning with particular types of assets – for example cash and investments, property in the form of land and buildings, and perhaps business interests. Certainly, for those with available cash and investments there are many effective plans available that can make use of trusts (more on this in future articles). With the explosion in the values of residential property since the millennium and prices appearing to be booming again in BS9, we watch with hope and interest the new Conservative Government’s plans for a main residence IHT Allowance of up to £175,000 per person. Richard is a Chartered Financial Planner with a specialist interest in providing friendly, old fashioned face to face financial advice to local people at retirement age and the elderly. He has particular expertise in investments, pensions, inheritance tax and long-term care planning.

Wealth West was set up to deal with one type of client - the local person, couple or family that is serious about their financial future and want a local, friendly service, delivered by someone who knows them and knows their stuff. It is what we do. We help clients the old-fashioned way, on a face-to-face, one-on-one basis. We offer a truly professional, independent, Chartered Financial Planning service.

Two more Cycle Sunday events approved Organisers of Cycle Sunday, which attracted more than 2,000 cyclists to the Downs in April, are delighted with the feedback from participants and the response from the Downs Committee. Two further events have been approved this year on June 28th and September 20th. Vicki Cracknell of Henleaze, one of the organising team explains: “The first event was funded by the the Big Lottery and the Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership. “Some brilliant people gave their creativity and time for free and we were very grateful to Life Cycle, Travel West, Wheels for All and Bristol Cycling Development squad who provided activities for free. We managed to run the event for less than £1 per participant which feels like great value for money. “There was some concern that thousands of people would turn up in cars, but our evaluation of the event showed that 80% of participants came by bike. Most came in family groups, so those who came by car would account for approximately 100 cars around the Downs that morning. “Cycle Sunday shows very clearly that there is a huge

WRG

demand for traffic-free family cycling in North Bristol. Half the participants were children, and The Downs is a perfect location with its 400 acres of flat parkland.” she added. If you would like to help with promoting the event or being a steward on the day, please contact the organisers at downscycle@gmail.com

This is a routine that you can practice in the morning (more actively) or evening (more quietly). If you’ve missed any, email diana@ yogawest.co.uk and she will send you the full sequence. Happy practising. Yoga Pose of the Month: Ardha Chandrasana (half moon pose) This posture strengthens the legs and helps us develop poise and balance. Medical benefits:
Along with some of the other standing poses, Ardha Chandrasana reduces arthritis of the lower back, dorsal region and shoulder joints. It relieves backache and also benefits those with displaced spinal discs and sciatica. As with the other standing poses, Half Moon Pose strengthens weak or deformed legs, lengthens tight hamstrings, deals with knee problems and brings form to

flat feet. Indigestion, kidney problems, acidity and bronchitis can also be helped. 1. Stand in TADASANA (Mountain Pose). With an inhalation, jump your feet to 3½ ft apart and swing your arms out to your sides. Fully stretch your arms and legs. Turn your left foot in and your right foot out. 2. Exhaling, extend your trunk sideways to the right. 3. Hold your right shin bone and come into TRIKONASANA (Triangle Pose). Take a couple of normal breaths. 4. Bend your right knee and reach out to place your right hand on the floor 1ft. ahead of your right foot. 5. With an exhalation straighten your right leg and simultaneously raise your left leg to the level of your right hip. Keep both legs firm and straight. Raise your left arm. Look up. Breathe evenly and hold the pose for 20-30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. Practice note: If your hand does not reach the floor without your knee bending, place it on a block. You can also practice this pose with your back against the wall while you are learning to balance. News Hear Bruckner’s mighty Mass at St Alban’s

ANTON Bruckner’s powerful Mass in F minor will be performed in the Proms this year. But you don’t need to travel to London to hear it. The Mass will also be the centrepiece of a concert given by the Redland Green Choir, with the Long Ashton Orchestra, at 7.30pm on 4th July at St Alban’s Church, Westbury Park. The choir, under its young Musical Director Nick Bromilow, is building on successful recent performances of the Faure and Mozart Requiems. The Mass will be complemented by a varied

programme of other works, ranging from the 17th century madrigal Adieu Sweet Amaryllis by John Wilbye, through the jaunty spiritual Down in the river to pray (as featured in the film Oh brother where art thou) and the 1950s chart topper Elizabethan serenade, to Don’t cry for me Argentina and Mamma Mia, an Abba medley. Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions, under 16s free) and can be obtained from membership@ redlandgreenchoir.org.uk or at the door.

Early arrivals for rehearsal stretching a point during the warm-up.

News New-generation knitters casting on A new generation of knitters is casting on, revitalising a craft which seemed to have gone into terminal decline. Young families are learning about its creative and therapeutic benefits, and in doing so are inspiring their own parents and grandparents to start all over again. It means a new lease of life for specialist needlecraft shops like Sew n Sew in Canford Lane, Westbury-on-Trym’s Independent Shop of the Year. Manager Jude Trackman and her colleagues Wendy Florey and Rachel Watson set up a special knitting day with demonstrations outside on the pavement – until the chill wind drove them inside. They showed traditional techniques and new developments like arm knitting. This is where no needles are required and a scarf can be made in 20 minutes in the right hands – so to speak. “We were genuinely surprised

at the response,” said Jude. “At one point in the afternoon we had 10 ladies around a table learning, or in some cases relearning, how to knit. At that point we had other ladies standing in the shop waiting to take their turn. “Please don’t think that this resurgence in knitting is just for the ladies. We know gentlemen who learned to knit and sew in the armed forces, and they come in too for their balls of wool and other materials – not to mention a good chat. “Crochet is also growing in popularity, and we are equally happy to show anyone how to start. “What so many people are discovering is that toys and

had donated knitted toys with proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. “I chose MS for family reasons, and I am really grateful to our customers and visitors for enabling us to raise £50 for the charity,” she added. “We also had knitted flowers decorating the outside. They were made by many customers and I would like to thank them all.” Pictured, Elizabeth Harbinson (standing), who was just passing by Sew n Sew, stopped to learn the art of arm knitting from Jude Trackman (centre) and Wendy Florey.

rom time to time I am approached by magazine editors to contribute advice on interior trends. But, the truth is that although I do keep vaguely abreast of trend and colour forecasts, really I hate them. Style has always been my preference over following fashion, in both clothing and interiors, and a sense of environmental responsibility has always weighed heavy. The idea of replacing unbroken home furnishings with any regularity is an alien concept to me - if you truly love a blanket, vase, cabinet or curtain, you always will. Fortunately the like minded souls at Pretty Nostalgic magazine have published a fantastic book ‘HOME: Happy Days From Vintage Ways’. Rather than cashing in on the vintage trend (which has spawned tons of faux-distressed, mass produced nonsense masquerading as ‘vintage products’), the team behind Pretty Nostalgic are absolutely authentic in their attitude. Sash window innovation Walk through your neighbourhood and you’ll notice the amount of sash windows on view. This is due to the fact that the majority of housing stock in Bristol is Victorian and Edwardian. Although we probably take this for granted, it could have been very different story. Beginning in the 1970’s many householders began removing their traditional sash windows and replacing them with metal or UPVC double glazed windows. Planning laws were not as strict as they are today and the fact these new windows were not as attractive as the original ones was often not taken in to consideration. Many of these new windows will have already been replaced at least once as they only have a service life of 25 years. Luckily many chose not to follow this path and decided to keep their Sash windows. Picture an traditional elegant house and

37

the original windows will still be in place. They would have been constructed of slow grown pine, the majority having lasted over a hundred years. If well care for, they will still be there for the next hundred years and beyond. The number of Bristol Sash windows specialists has increased over the past 10 years. Your windows may only survive if they are well decorated but not painted shut, as this can lead to rotten wood. If heat efficiency is important to you, discrete draught-proofing can be installed. Combined with a service, the sashes will slide smoothly, won’t rattle and noise will be reduced. For the ultimate makeover, slim sealed double glazed units can be installed. Whichever path you choose, remember, you are only keeping the house for the next generation to enjoy. It would be nice to think that we can all play a little part in keeping our city a beautiful one. A Victorian Garden : Then and Now

If you live in one of Bristol’s wonderful Victorian terraced houses have you ever wondered what your garden might have looked like when it was new? As a garden designer I am fascinated by the transformation of domestic gardens through history. They reflect social and lifestyle changes and like interiors were often influenced by fashion. The influx of rural workers into the city meant back gardens were commonly productive yards with fruit and vegetables. Many were hard landscaped and combined brick paving with earthy beds where everyday veg such as potatoes, carrots and cabbages would grow. Space to dry laundry and store coal was essential. The very smoky atmosphere also had an impact on plants. Fruit was popular and gooseberries and blackberries were common. Ornamental

plants were expensive and rare and only became available as lifestyles changed and disposable income grew. Time to garden was an important factor and as 9

to 5 and weekends became the norm gardens evolved into opulent havens. They often included a central diamond, or circular bed planted with a scented

rose surrounded by lawns with straight edges and showy, abundant herbaceous borders. Flowers in the home became very popular and long stemmed

varieties such as Monkshood (Aconitum) and Delphiniums were common. Lilac trees and Orange Blossom (Philadelphus) were planted for colour and scent and Privet (Ligustrum) for neat hedging. Gardens became an important element in Victorian life and most were meticulously tended, with the still existing (although sometimes wobbly) lows walls allowing neighbours to maintain a strong community spirit. So when you next gaze out of your rear bedroom window you might just be able to imagine a patchwork of manicured colour and texture. Perhaps not so different to today, just a little more edging and less trampolines! Nick Bickford is a landscape designer living in Bishopston who specialises in the sensitive rejuvenation of gardens with an emphasis on naturalised planting and sustainability. Next month he’ll be writing about the Victorian garden today. www.inforadig. com.

Elmlea Junior and Infant Schools brought their annual Summer Fair ahead to Spring for the first timea, attracting tremendous support from families and the community. Downs parking restrictions

Women in creative industries

Westbury Park Community Association is concerned that parking restrictions on the Downs will cause knock-on impacts in the nearby streets of Westbury Park, and has been encouraging residents to comment on the proposal. The consultation period ran until May 26th. Bristol City Council has proceeded to the statutory Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) stage. Under the TRO proposals,

Students from state and independent schools across the region headed to Red Maids’ School in Westbury-on-Trym for a special conference to encourage girls to consider the exciting opportunities that exist for women in the creative industries. The provided a diverse range of workshops focusing on design, acting, radio production, journalism, film-making, music, event management, architecture, writing, poetry and creative

parking will either be prohibited altogether on roads around the Downs or restricted to four hours. The proposals will result in the loss of over 500 all day parking spaces. The community association shighlights a failure to place the Downs parking proposals “into any coherent logical overall programme of traffic and parking management such as a park and ride scheme for north Bristol.”

technologies. The conference, an annual event aimed at girls in Year 10, also featured keynote speeches. Kate Fleming, Director of Sixth Form at the Red Maids’ said: “This year’s event saw some really exciting speakers and workshop leader.” The conference was sponsored for the third consecutive year by the Bristol office of accountancy and investment management group Smith & Williamson.

News Westbury Singers – ‘music does lift the soul’

The 20th anniversary of Westbury Singers is being celebrated in style by the 44 members. Their performance was important to the success of the recent event at Westbury-onTrym Village Hall which featured local services for the elderly, and they return to the same venue on July 18th at 7.30pm for their next public concert. Enjoying singing, the social life of the choir and raising money for different recognised charities are its important traditions. Rehearsals are every Monday evening at the Baptist Church Hall in Reedley Road under the direction of Musical Director Barbara Rusbridge. “Barbara took over last autumn from Amy Ward,” explained Chairman Margie Bushell. “We are a four-part choir, and there has never been a requirement for members to audition or read music. “The quality of Barbara’s direction and the infectious enthusiasm of all members enables new recruits to perform well in a surprisingly short time. “Like Amy before her, Barbara has brought a sparkle to our rehearsal evenings. We are her first adult choir but she is such a natural teacher.

Musical Director Barbara Rusbridge leads Westbury Singers in their weekly rehearsal

“I know I speak on behalf of us all when I say how much we appreciate her dedication and humour. “Music does lift the soul,” Margie continued, “and it is very unusual not to leave a rehearsal feeling happy and relaxed. “There are still members from the original choir, ‘Top Notes’ which first met in the dining room of one of the singers over 20 years ago. “As numbers expanded the name was changed and we are now celebrating 20 years as Westbury Singers. “It has been a great pleasure to welcome new members, hopefully with music which suits everyone.” Tickets are available in advance for the July 18th concert by emailing Westbury Singers Secretary Sarah Scott – sarah60@blueyonder.co.uk

Getting rid of those pesky bits of food is vital for tooth care

with Dr Catherine Spalding

W

e know it is very important to brush our teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. However, flossing is very important too. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gum line, areas a toothbrush cannot reach. When you start flossing you will be amazed at how much food is left between your teeth after brushing. Your gums may bleed when you start flossing due to inflammation, don’t worry this should soon stop. Make sure you are not flossing too hard as this can make the gum sore and if it does not stop bleeding visit your dentist. Remember some people find flossing a bit difficult, if so there are many other interdental cleaning aids such as small interdental brushes. You can get the interdental brushes with longer handles to make cleaning back teeth easier. These brushes come in many sizes; if you have any concerns ask your dentist. You do not have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep!

Sculptor keeping up the wood work! Woodland sculptor Andy O’Neill has been busy again in Badock’s Wood following the unveiling of his first carved bench in March, and will continue his work during June. It is hoped that this stage will include a totem/welcome sculpture at the Lake Road entrance to the wood. Friends of Badock’s Wood plan to put signs up in the wood to let visitors know what he’s doing and where. A Bugs and Butterflies Walk was scheduled on May Bank Holiday. Led by Tony Smith from Bristol Naturalists’ Society, this was an introduction to identifying a range of invertebrates. The next Friends of Badock’s Wood meeting is on June 2nd (7.30pm) at the Greenway Centre. A Hidden Treasures Afternoon Picnic is planned for June 14th from 4.30pm. It will include storytelling in Justin’s

Logging Camp (follow directions from the main entrances and paths). Take a picnic tea, hear stories and tell some of your own. Everybody is welcome and the

event is the Friends contribution to Bristol’s Big Green Week and Festival of Nature. Recent events include a bluebell management session

when the flowers and leaves of nonnative bluebells were removed to reduce their vigour to reduce competition with native bluebells. Regular litter pick-up days are being organised, and volunteers are invited to help run the Friends of Badock’s Wood stall at the Southmead Festival at the Greenway Centre on July 11th (2.305pm). Sculptor Andy O’Neill is pictured with Linda Wilson, Management Planning Coordinator for The Friends of Badock’s Wood. He was explaining the carving on his first bench in the wood.

TUR

The Perfect Posture with

Clare Chapman

Do car seats drive your back pain?

C

ar seats are often super-sculpted these days. Trying to make us comfortable, most integrate a lumbar support - convex cushioning which assumes that we need to support the back in a curved shape at waist level. Yet if we study the posture of populations who suffer very little back pain – traditional rural societies as found in village Africa, India, and South America - we see that their spines are significantly straighter than the curves we in the industrialised world now regard as normal. Rather than a notable lumbar curve, traditional populations have a straighter stacking of the spinal column. This is also the shape of our own infants, most athletes, and our pre-twentieth century ancestors. This is just one of the differences that challenges conventional wisdom on back shape, posture, and what is truly normal and healthy. Exactly

why and how we can return to our natural posture is brilliantly set out in Esther Gokhale’s book, ‘8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back’, and her anthropological evidence is compelling. The book teaches us to sit, stand and walk as nature intended. No fancy equipment is needed, but a ‘Stretchsit’ cushion has been designed to meet the challenges of poor chairs and car seats. Placed above the waist, it ensures a therapeutic sitting position in two ways: 1. It neutralises inbuilt lumbar supports by filling in above them - this also stops your upper back, neck and shoulders from being pushed forward. 2. Its rubbery ‘nubs’ produce gentle traction in the lower back as you sit, therapeutically lengthening the spine and taking weight off compressed discs and nerves.

A Gokhale Method Individual Consultation offers expert insight and feedback on your posture, plus personal recommendations for improvement. (£95 for 90 mins). Call me on 07982 231317 or explore the full 6-lesson course at: www.gokhalemethod.com

The Charm Bracelet by Melissa Hill

‘Every charm bracelet tells a story’……… Over the years Holly O’Neill is baffled by the charms she is being sent. They always seemed to arrive at the right time and with significance, especially as she was now on her own. Holly had been left ‘holding the baby’. Alone, she selflessly devotes her life to bringingup her son Danny. Her unconditional love and values shine through in all she seeks to do, at home and at work. She rarely has time for herself, as others always come first. One day at work at the vintage store shop, where the rich and famous donate their clothes etc. she comes across a silver charm bracelet. It had been left in a secret pocket of a donated item. Now begins her relentless quest to find the owner of the charm bracelet and reunite them. She secretly would also like to discover the anonymous benefactor of the

charms sent to her too. The story revolves around two families and their lives and how they become connected through a charm bracelet. It shows how strong a mother’s love can be for her child’s happiness, despite their age. The outcome, kept me guessing until three-quarters the way through the book, although the author leaves the ending for the reader to decide. This is a lovely story that is well written and thought provoking. well written book about very human strengths and frailties.

Self-pay Private Healthcare Treatment ... what does it mean and how can I find out more about it? Spire The Glen Bristol Hospital is witnessing an increasing number of patients investing in their healthcare by paying for their treatment to give them faster access to medical care. With the ever increasing demands on the NHS, people are looking for other options to speed up getting treatment for procedures that aren’t necessarily life threatening but do cause discomfort and have a negative impact on their lives. Kate Hoffmann, Matron at Spire Bristol Hospital, explains: “The self-pay option can help to put patients who are waiting for treatment at ease by providing a simple, hassle-free alternative that allows them to be seen within a few days of enquiry”. “Patients come to the hospital for an initial consultation with their chosen consultant and a treatment plan is agreed. They are then given an all-inclusive

fixed price which covers all aspects of their care. The fixed price provides peace of mind and reassurance as patients’ know there will be no hidden or unexpected costs to contend with. The surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee, and hospital fees which cover nursing care,

accommodation and food throughout your stay are all included.” “The fixed fee also covers a follow-up appointment with the consultant if needed and all standard post-operative care including 2 weeks supply of take-home drugs, removal

of stitches, dressing changes and any physiotherapy the consultant advises. There will also be no additional cost in the unlikely event that you need to be readmitted in relation to the procedure that has taken place.” To help spread the cost of treatment patients may be eligible for an interest free loan arranged through First Medical Loans. Call 0845 6341199 for details. For more information on how to self-fund your treatment at the hospital, call Spire’s Private Treatment Advisors on 0117 980 4000 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and they will be happy to guide you through the process. You can also read what some of our self-funded patients have said about their experiences of the hospital by visiting our website, http://www. spirehealthcare.com/bristol/.

One call could save you a lifetime If you have a health concern or you are waiting longer than you would like for treatment, Spire ‘The Glen’ Hospital may be able to help you get your life back on track. Why not call our friendly team for a no obligation chat, we will be happy to answer your questions.

We meet Jane and Alex from Ladies that Launder

Tell us about your company. Ladies that Launder, formerly known as Ironing etc, was originally established in Stoke Lane, Westbury-on-Trym in 2008. As our name suggests we are a laundry service run by business partners Jane and Alex. We are both local girls who after many years of working and travelling elsewhere have now returned to North West Bristol to start a new venture. We were in fact at the same school in Bristol for a while but we did not meet until 2013. Alex needed her Duvet washing and as luck would have it Jane was on hand to get the job done, the rest, as they say, is history. We both have a clear philosophy – our business must be fun, for us and for our customers. So we pride ourselves not only on the quality of our laundering, but also on the warm, friendly and humorous ambience in our shop. Many of our customers tell us that they appreciate the banter as much as the washing and ironing.

We like to take an interest in the local community, supporting local Schools and a range of charitable events whenever we can.

What services do you provide locally? We provide just about every laundry service you can think of apart from Dry Cleaning. We wash and dry, wash and iron or iron only all sorts of items including clothes, curtains, rugs, sports kits, bed linen, duvets and table linen. A full list of our services can be found on yell.com. Our Duvet service is very popular. It is so important to keep Duvets, Pillows, Bedspreads and Blankets fresh and clean. These items must not be dry-cleaned because of the danger of inhaling toxic fumes from the chemicals used. We have

Your duvet and/or pillows are returned to you in one of or breathable storage bags that will protect your bedding when not in use. We offer a free collection and delivery service within a 2 mile radius of our shop and many of our senior customers in particular value this service, which of course comes with the happy, smiling face of our driver, Allan. Cheers Drive!

Our customers. We feel that we are part of a strong local community. We know many of our customers well and we will always adapt our services to meet their needs. We have a lot of fun each day and we get real pleasure from delivering a quality service.

What are your plans for the future?

What makes your business different from other companies?

Our business has grown considerably over the last 12 months. These days people lead increasingly busy lives and getting the laundry done simply takes valuable time away from family life, so they bring it to us. This year we have made some improvements in our shop in order to create more capacity for the increasing volume of work that we are getting. We look forward to continuing to serve our lovely customers and the local community.

We think that it’s the personal touch that makes us different. We know our customers and they know and trust us.

Cyclists sought for charity challenge

PROPS, a Bristol-based charity, is looking for cyclists to join its 500-mile bike ride from Bristol to Bordeaux to help raise vital funds. The annual challenge sees a team of 60 riders from across the UK, cycle over a period of four days. Together they aim to raise more than £50,000 for the charity, which provides opportunities and support for those with special needs. PROPS survives by generating its own funds through sporting events and via social enterprises like sign making, printing and farm based activity. Organisers are looking to fill the remaining saddles in the ride, which leaves Bristol Temple Quay on July 1 and finishes

at the Girondins Fountain in Bordeaux on July 4. Riders can choose between a 300-mile ‘Classic’ ride (roughly 80-miles per day) and a 500-mile ‘Extreme’ (125-miles per day) version. Chair of Props, Kevin Smith, said: “With the efforts of our bike riders and the generosity of our supporters we continue to bring real benefit to the lives of disabled youngsters and their families. “We are looking for keen cyclists to get on board this year, take on the challenge and help us to smash our £50,000 fundraising target.” For further information and to sign up to the ride, visit www. bristol2bordeaux.org or contact PROPS on 0117 9653514.
