Man dies after car hits wall near supermarket POLICE are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a man was killed when his car hit a brick wall in Longwell Green. The incident happened at 3.10am on Sunday August 11 in Craven Way, near the approach to Asda. A Vauxhall Corsa was travelling in a south westerly direction down Craven Way towards the mini roundabout, where there is an option to turn left towards Marsham Way or right into the supermarket. The car, however, carried straight on, hitting the brick wall at the far side of the roundabout. The male driver received attention at the scene but died shortly afterwards. The road was closed to allow collision investigators to examine the scene and was re-opened at about 9am. Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident who may have information. Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, and to quote the reference number 5219184177.

Hambrook lights: chance to have a say PEOPLE are being invited to have their say on changes to the Hambrook traffic lights. South Gloucestershire Council has been told to cut levels of toxic nitrogen dioxide at the busy junction on the A4174 Avon Ring Road, which are above the legal air pollution limit. Under powers known as an experimental traffic order, it has stopped vehicles coming from the Bromley Heath roundabout from turning right towards Winterbourne and made access from Frenchay on the B4058 Bristol Road left-turn only, banning traffic from right turns or going straight ahead. Comments can be made at bit.ly/2KIeO58 between now and February 11 next year. Anyone not online should call 01454 863503. Winterbourne Parish council’s Frenchay ward councillors – Adrian Collins, Paul Kembery, Charlie Watkins and Hugh Whatley – said the impact the changes would have on Frenchay and the surrounding area would only become clear after the school holidays, when peaktime traffic increased to its usual level, but similar changes during the Bromley Heath viaduct works, which finished last year, caused gridlock on some days and added up to 30 minutes to journey times. In a joint statement the councillors said: "This stationary traffic causes added pollution and somewhat defeats South Glos Council’s implementation of the scheme to reduce vehicle emissions at the ring road. "We need the junction to be redesigned, which we've asked South Glos Council to do on numerous occasions.”

n NEWS A FIVE-year-old girl whose life was saved thanks to a heart transplant has brought back two gold medals from a national event which raises awareness of organ donation. Elodie Gray competed in the British Transplant Games which took part in Newport at the end of July. The event saw more than 1,000 transplant survivors come together to compete in 23 different sports. Elodie, who lives in Kingswood and is a pupil at Beacon Rise primary school, was triumphant in the games, emerging with gold medals in the long jump and 25m track events. Dad Colin said Elodie's achievements were even more remarkable given how close to death she had been. He said: “Elodie was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopthy back in March 2014 and placed into an induced coma for two months at Bristol Children's Hospital before being air lifted to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

3

Elodie brings back two golds from Transplant Games “After three cardiac arrests and a stroke which paralysed her left side, she was placed on machinery which was keeping her alive. “We were told that due to complications the device which had been supporting her heart would be turned off and we would have to say goodbye to her. Thankfully at the eleventh hour a heart came in from France and Elodie underwent a transplant.” Colin said the British Transplant Games were testament to how many lives have been saved because of organ donation. “We met some great families at the games who had similar stories to ours. It was fantastic to be a part of it and the two gold medals just topped it off. We are

very proud of her.” Coincidently, a teacher at Elodie's school also took part in the Games. Garreth Rhodes had a liver transplant in 2016 following a diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in the early 2000s. Garreth, who says he is “immensely grateful” to the family of his donor for saying yes, also did brilliantly, taking a gold medal in archery and bronze in both the 5K and 10 pin bowling events. The games, organised on behalf of charity Transplant Sport, also help increase

awareness of the charity Anthony Nolan and its need for blood stem cells and bone marrow donation.

Betsy riding high after BMX success A STUDENT from Hanham Wood Academy is riding high after being crowned BMX world champion. Betsy Bax faced tough competition in the championships held in Zolder, Belgium on July 24. But the 13-year-old emerged victorious, wowing crowds with her agility and skill. Betsy, who lives in Kingswood, started riding when she was just four years old, inspired by her brother Alfie who is two years older. Since then, she has gone from strength to strength, winning a clutch of trophies and titles. The recent world championships proved particularly tough. Betsy said: “It was definitely difficult and challenging as the temperature rose to 40 degrees and the other girls from all

around the world were strong competition. “I just couldn’t believe it at first and felt over the moon as I crossed the line.” Mum Lauren said: “Betsy, she works so hard with her training and remains so calm and composed when riding. She knows her limits and when to push herself. I am incredibly proud of her.” Betsy will compete in the British championships over the weekend of August 24/25 and is looking forward the next world championships in Texas next year. Betsy rides for Stay Strong Brand, a world recognised team, as well as Bath BMX Club. Her go-to track for practice is in Bath but she does indoor training on a turbo trainer and sprints near her home.

Making memories at mill CHILDREN from The Meadows Primary School have buried a time capsule at Bitton Mill, with help from the parish history group. The whole school got involved in selecting objectsfor the capsule, which can be dug up in the future for people to see how Bitton has changed. The items included: coins, a grocery receipt for a weekly shop, the school’s timetable and menu, photographs and a map of the school, a school jumper, information on technology, toys, school work, the school motto and logo. Also buried was a brochure for the new homes being built by Linden Homes at Bitton Mill, including floor plans and price lists, and a hi-visibility vest. Headteacher Joy Mounter

said: "The experience of burying a time capsule has been invaluable for the children and the school council relished the opportunity to get hands-on with the digging – it was a very memorable visit.” Marlene from the Bitton Parish History Group said: “I was pleased to help the children bury their time capsule and was impressed with the items they selected, they’d clearly spent a lot of time carefully choosing what

should be included. “I find Bitton fascinating and it’s so interesting to see how the site has changed – previously housing a former brass and paper mill, and then manufacturing car seats. "It was sad to see the site derelict for many years and we’re pleased to be helping the new residents learn more about the village. "We were delighted to be involved and it was great to

work with some budding new historians.” Emma Mackay from Linden Homes said: “The time capsule is buried in open space at Bitton Mill and has been marked with a plaque, so people can visit it. "The children will be able to dig it up in 50 years’ time, when they’re in their 50s and 60s, to see how Bitton and life in general has changed. It’s been a wonderful activity for us as well as the children.”

Couple celebrate 70 years of married life A LONGWELL Green couple will be raising a glass this month to celebrate 70 years of marriage. John and June “Queenie” Rees tied the knot on September 3, 1949 at St Leonard's Church in St George and moved into a house in Church Road. John, 93, started his career as mechanic for Bristol Corporation Company working on big lorries and snow ploughs before moving to Rolls Royce where he worked as an engineer until retirement. June, 90, who is better known by her middle name Queenie, was an administrator for the NHS and later did voluntary work playing music at Cherry Gardens Primary School in Bitton. The couple have a son, Mark, born in 1955, daughterin-law Beverley and two granddaughters, Abbie, 33, and Lucy, 29. After moving from Church Road in the early 1980s, the couple settled in Longwell Green, just a street away from where Mark and Beverley set up home. Queenie used to play the piano for a theatre group and is still into crafts like sewing and knitting. She's also a passionate shopper and loves dressing up. John, who isn't as mobile as his wife, likes to read and has the odd glass of wine and beer. Queenie has a sister who is 97 and lives in Fishponds. John's brother is also 97 and lives in Compton Martin.

John and Queenie on their wedding day in 1949 They have a best friend called Shirley Weekly who they see regularly. When Shirley's husband Graham was alive the four of them spent lots of time together, going for evenings out and holidays. The couple will be spending their special day with family and neighbours and will be treated to a slap up meal on the evening by Mark and Beverley. Beverley said: “Queenie

The couple at home in Longwell Green

likes to get dressed up. She is very up-together and welldressed - she has her hair done every week and her nails done every six weeks. “They are fabulous in-laws and we are a very close family. John has been like a father as my father died a long time ago. Queenie is like a friend to me. We've always gone shopping together. Queenie loves to go round the shops and we go in

all the modern shops like Zara. The dress she bought for her anniversary is from Mango!” Beverley said John and Queenie have definitely cracked the secret to a happy marriage. “They are very considerate and thoughtful towards each other. John is always asking her if she would like a cup of tea or a glass of wine. They look after each other and have been very happy together.”

Fred cuts the ribbon at Magpie Court TELEVISION favourite Fred Dinenage delighted local retirees with tales from his time on screen when he attended the official opening of a retirement complex in Hanham. The MBE – whose career has spanned over five decades – cut the ribbon on McCarthy and Stone’s Magpie Court development, just off the roundabout at the bottom of the High Street. Fred, whose varied career has seen him present shows including How, How 2 and Pass The Buck as well as a long stint as news anchor on ITV Meridan, joined guests including homeowners, staff and members of the public to talk about his illustrious career. Attendees heard first-hand about some of the breaking news stories he has reported over the years, as well as the many factual books he has written – and ghost written – including an

autobiography on the infamous Kray Brothers. Fred said: “It was a pleasure to visit Magpie Court and give a talk on my colourful television career. The development provides an excellent solution for those looking to enjoy an independent and active lifestyle in retirement, and I enjoyed meeting and chatting to homeowners. It’s clear everyone values the quality of life afforded by their surroundings and the freedom of having a range of services on their doorstep.” Ciara Hilley, divisional marketing manager for McCarthy and Stone, said: “We would like to thank Fred for taking the time to visit Magpie Court. He was truly delightful and he really made our official opening special. Fizz Pop Science is a winning formula! FAMILIES headed for Cadbury Heath Library to take part in a science workshop aimed at encouraging children to get into science and read more over the summer. The interactive 'Fizz Pop Science' workshop was held as part of the 20th national Summer Reading Challenge. Children explored space travel and followed the journey of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission to the moon, learning about what it’s like to wear a spacesuit and even tasting some freeze-dried space food. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to 4 to 11-year-olds and runs until September 14 across all libraries in South Gloucestershire. This year’s theme is ‘Space Chase’, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Cllr Brian Allinson joined children as they took part in the workshop. He said: “I remember watching the Apollo 11 moon landing, so I’m delighted that our libraries are holding these workshops to excite children about science and inspire them to learn more and become the scientists of the future.”

Funding boost for club MEMBERS of an elderly people's lunch club in St George were given a funding boost aimed at tackling loneliness at Christmas. The donation of £250 was handed to Jean Pickering, of Summerhill Methodist Church's Lunch Club, from Susan Grant, a community champion at Asda Longwell Green. Funding came from the supermarket's Local Impact scheme and will go towards a Christmas lunch on December 6 which will include entertainment from singer and Elvis tribute Rockin' Gerry. The church holds two lunch clubs each month at its base in Airballoon Road. Susan helps out regularly at the lunch club, preparing and serving meals for locals

Masters Church plan takes step forward The site, regarded as the birthplace of the Methodist movement, has had an uncertain future, dogged by complex planning and ownership issues. The Tabernacle, which is on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk Register, is now owned by a trust which is seeking funds in order to preserve the historically significant building and turn it into community use. The trust recently funded display boards alongside the Tabernacle in Park Road which tell of the building's rich past. WECA funding, through its Love Our High Streets project, will pay for a scheme of stabilisation to protect the Tabernacle while a bid for further cash is considered through the government’s Future High Streets Fund. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore said: “The Whitfield Tabernacle site is the historic jewel in Kingswood’s crown and is of huge international

LISTED building consent has been given to turn Kingswood's Grade II Masters Church into 19 apartments. The church, which can be glimpsed down an alley way off Regent Street, is on the same site as the historic Grade I Whitfield Tabernacle, Grade II Chapel House and graveyard. Planning permission has yet to be approved for the decaying church although the granting of listing building consent is seen as a significant step forward. The Masters Church stopped being used for worship in 1983 when the site was declared redundant. Crossman Homes bought the land next to the Tabernacle, which contains the Masters Church, from the PG Group in May. As well as wanting to convert the church into 19 apartments, the company hopes to build three homes on the site and turn the graveyard into a public park.

MP Chris welcomes birth centre reopening HEALTH minister and Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore has welcomed the announcement that Cossham Birth Centre will reopen in the autumn. As reported in last month's Voice, North Bristol NHS Trust now say that sufficient experienced midwives will be available to re-open the centre under an “open on arrival” model, as well as the associated homebirth service from October 21. Since the closure last autumn, Chris has visited Cossham Hospital and has pressed to local health bosses the importance of the centre’s reopening as soon as possible. The trust had told the MP that the decision to temporarily close the centre was taken due to the unprecedented high number of women needing induction of labour at Southmead Hospital's maternity unit. The closure has seen patients and women in labour being diverted to the midwife-led unit

Chris visited Cossham Hospital to speak to health chiefs after the temporary closure of the birth centre was announced last year at Southmead Hospital, in an effort by the Hospital Trust to maximise their midwifery Chris said: “I am delighted that the fantastic birth centre will be reopening in the autumn.

Having pressed local NHS chiefs to reverse the closure, I’m pleased that the midwife recruitment drive has been successful and families can be assured of the highest standards

of care. “I’ve appreciated speaking first hand to NHS professionals at Cossham. When it comes to the safety of new born babies' lives, it is absolutely crucial that we ensure appropriate staffing levels are in place and don't play party politics with decisions that are needed and necessary. As a father and MP I am encouraged the Trust has been focusing on ensuring the safety of local women and babies in their care. “Cossham is a local treasure. Many of my family were born here, the hospital inspired my mother to become a NHS nurse, and I recently used the maternity facilities in the aftercare of my son Henry." North Bristol NHS Trust has among the best neonatal outcomes in the country, with an average of 6,300 births a year, which includes around 350 births at Cossham Birth Centre and approximately 700 births at Mendip Birth Centre at Southmead Hospital.

Teenagers arrested in thefts investigation THREE teenage boys have been arrested after a number of bicycle thefts and burglaries. A 15-year-old and a 17-yearold, both from St George, and a 16-year-old from Staple Hill were arrested on suspicion of seven counts of burglary and one count of theft. The 15-year-old and 16-yearold boys were also arrested on suspicion of possession of Class B drugs. The arrests – made on Saturday August 10 – come

after an appeal was issued to help locate the owners of the suspected stolen bicycles resulting in owners from Bath, Downend, Hanham, Nailsea, Portishead, Clifton and St George all identifying their bikes. The three boys have been released under investigation and enquiries are still ongoing, reference 5219176642. Officers are currently in the process of the reuniting the stolen bicycles with their original owners.

Follow these tips to keep your bicycles safe from thieves: • Where possible, store your bicycles in your home • If this isn’t possible, ensure they are kept in a secure outbuilding such as an alarmed and locked shed or garage • Lock your bicycles to something immovable like a wall or floor • Double lock your bikes using two quality locks, at least one of which should be a D-lock • Get your bikes security marked and registered at BikeRegister and Immobilise • Record the details of your bicycles including noting the frame number (normally found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in), the BikeRegister number plus any other distinguishing features, and take a photo.

Principal Michael Jaffrain, said: “We have had an excellent set of results at A-level, which was particularly impressive in view of the new tougher linear curriculum and the personal barriers some of our students have had to overcome this academic year. "Our Applied General results have also been outstanding. I wish all of our students who will be leaving us the very best for the future.” St Brendan’s students have secured places on some of the country’s most competitive university courses, including four to Oxbridge. Good news all round

I got a 9 in maths – I'm so happy! I was expecting a 7 so I can't take it in, it's amazing. I'm going to St Brendan's to do maths, computer science and history.

I did all right but I didn't pass English literature as I was ill and had a really bad exam. Luckily I don't need it to study at Boomsatsuma where I'm going to take media.

I feel really good about my results. I put in so much revision and did at least 20 maths papers. I'm going to take A-levels in maths, further maths, physics and engineering at St Brendan's.

Isobella Chick

Izzy Hempstead

Kai Williams

Maddie Hayes

My results included four 9s – I was aiming high but I wasn't expecting to do so well. I'm going to study drama and theatre, dance and geography at St Brendan's, I really want to be on the stage.

I feel amazing! I did so much better than I thought. I worked hard and did lots of revising. I'd like to go into finance so will take A-levels in IT, business and economics at St Brendan's.

I did really well – I'm really proud. I got two 9s, two 8s and five 7s and will be going to St Mary Redcliffe sixth form. I'm going partying to celebrate.

IKB Academy students keep SBL: We're so proud of up strong record for STEM fantastic achievements STUDENTS from IKB Academy in Keynsham are off to a variety of universities and degree apprenticeships this month after successful A-level and Btec results. The school, which opened four years ago and has a specialism in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), saw excellent outcomes in those subjects for a third successive year. A quarter of all A-level results were at grade B and above and an impressive 63 per cent of all Level 3 Engineering grades were at Distinction and Distinction*. The school saw a 100 per cent pass rate in computer science, biology, chemistry, design and engineering subjects. Principal Danny Wilkinson said: “ For us at IKB the results are of course important, but what’s more important are the opportunities and destinations that are made possible because of these results, so many of our students are able to follow their

dreams. This is what makes it all worthwhile." One notable student is Bridie Bates, who is off to Derby University to study motor sport engineering. Bridie, who joined IKB in 2015 as the only girl in Year 10, had a passion for motor sport that began by watching Formula 1 with her Dad. Mr Wilkinson said: “Bridie joined IKB when we opened in 2015. Bridie had the resolve and foresight to recognise IKB as the place she needed to be to follow her lifetime dream of a career in the motor sport industry. We will miss Bridie at IKB but look forward to following what will be a hugely successful career.” Other students are also beginning degree apprenticeships, for example with Rolls Royce and Dyson. Mr Wilkinson said: "As a small Sixth Form we get to know our students and wish them all every success in the future." For a third year running the results have been positive for the STEM area of specialism for the school. Forty per cent of all grades in STEM subjects were at a grade 6/B or above and students excelled in Engineering where over 40 per cent of the grades were Distinction or Distinction* equating to A/A* . A successful cohort studied an additional GCSE in further maths and many gained at least a B grade in this subject. A special mention goes to Jack, Ewan, Lizz, Harriet, Tom, Nathan and Triada who each achieved 6 or more grade 7s (A grades) and above.

WELLSWAY School is celebrating extremely strong results at both A-level and GCSE. More than a fifth of all A-level grades were at A* or A and 10 per cent of candidates securing 3 A* or A grades. All students who completed the Extended Project Qualification achieved A*-B. Principal Matthew Woodville said "We are extremely proud of the year group and of their achievements. The school has also seen some outstanding A-level and vocational results. Mr Anderson said: "We are very pleased to see that the number of students achieving the highest grades at A-level has increased considerably and that results in vocational qualifications showed a 100 per cent pass rate, with many students achieving the top grade. "We are very proud of students who have achieved outstanding results and who are going on to attend prestigious universities. Particular congratulations go to Jasmin Leaworthy, who achieved four A* grades and will be studying at Exeter University, and Emily Godfrey, who gained three A grades and a Distinction and will be studying at Bath University. Good year for Broadlands BROADLANDS Academy is celebrating another good year of GCSE results. The school saw strong results in science, with for the first time over a quarter of students studying the more challenging triple science qualification. Maths results were also excellent, up 10 percentage points from 2018. Principal James Hall said: “Despite our rapid growth in student numbers, Broadlands continues to be a small school. This enables all staff to support and challenge every student to be remarkable. Broadlands has strength in depth within the curriculum it offers and has an excellent reputation in supporting the transition from primary to secondary.” For the academic year ahead, Broadlands has enriched the curriculum offer to include Performing Arts, alongside the Art and Music GCSEs it already offers. This will complement

the academic and vocational subjects on offer, including Child Development and Health and Social Care, in which the students benefit from being able to learn within the academy’s own nursery (Broadlands Bears).

The academy is also transforming four new computer rooms and significantly increasing the number of new computers available to students to far exceed the national average.

BRISTOL Mayor Marvin Rees has reminded all young people who have received exam results that there are many opportunities open to them. Mr Rees said: “Creating a city of hope where everyone has the chance to succeed is our vision for Bristol. There is a wide choice of high quality apprenticeships, entry-level jobs as well as university and college places on offer.” For apprenticeship opportunities go to: www. apprenticeships.gov.uk/ apprentice/what-is-anapprenticeship and as part of the #FireItUp campaign. A total of 35 families were given complimentary passes to have free roam of the park and its attractions. Chris Roys, chief executive at Jessie May, said: “The annual family fun day is a key event in the Jessie May calendar where all of our families have the chance to come together and experience something out of the normal day-to-day. “To be able to hold it at Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park again this year meant that we could offer our families a day of funfilled variety, distracting them from the stresses and worries that they have in their lives, and we are so thankful to everyone involved whose hard work made it our best event yet.” Avon Valley CEO Doug Douglas said: “Jessie May is a charity that we are proud to have a long-standing relationship with, and who we love to continue to support and work with. We hope that the family fun day helped to put smiles on the faces of the children, and that all the families were able to take away some precious memories.” A number of specialist provisions were put in to place to make sure the day ran as smoothly as possible for families, including the appearance of a mobile accessible toilet. The charity’s nurses provide vital respite care and emotional support to local families caring for a terminally ill child, as well as end of life care and bereavement support for up to five years after a child has died.

Take a trip to battlefields PLACES are still available for a four-day trip to the battlefields of the Western Front later this month to follow in the footsteps of the area’s soldiers who fought and died in the trenches. Led by two local First World War historians, the group will leave from Bristol and will be looking at what was happening 100 years ago in the immediate aftermath of the war in Flanders. Those on the trip will also be able to tap into the expertise of Bristol author and researcher Clive Burlton and TV military historian Jeremy Banning, to help trace their own ancestors and family stories. The tour, which sets off on September 27 and returns on September 30, is the fourth to be organised from the region. Information can be obtained by calling on 07918 071008 or email clive@bristolbooks.org

New area dean for Kingswood A NEW area dean for Kingswood and South Gloucestershire has been appointed. Jeremy Andrew will take up the role following the announcement by the Bishop of Bristol, Rt Revd Vivienne Faull. Jeremy has the been vicar in Warmley, Bitton and Syston since 2014 and before that was the vicar of four rural churches in the Diocese of Truro whilst also being the Diocesan Director of Ordinands. Over the last eight months, he has been working as the advisor for Ministry Development and continued to be an assistant director of Ordinands. Jeremy grew up in Bristol and went to St Mary Redcliffe School. He went on to complete an engineering apprenticeship, first with Yate Foundry Ltd and then British Aerospace Plc. After theological college in Durham, Jeremy served his curacy in

Newquay in Cornwall and his first incumbency in Perranporth, just along the coast. Jeremy is married to Rachel and they have two daughters, a son and a granddaughter. Jeremy said: “I am pleased and excited to be invited to serve the church as area dean for Kingswood and South Gloucestershire and I look forward to supporting and encouraging our deanery clergy and churches in ministry and mission together.” There are seven deaneries in the Diocese of Bristol. Area deans play a key role in helping resource parishes as they implement the diocesan vision and priorities, as well as reporting to the Bishop on any significant matters arising from their churches. Bishop Viv said: “I am delighted to appoint Jeremy as area dean of Kingswood and

South Glos. He has faithfully served the Diocese for the last five years, both as an incumbent and as part of the Diocesan Support Services and I look forward to working alongside him in his new role. Please do continue to remember him in your prayers as he steps into this post.”

£1.16m will help tackle violence POLICE and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens has been awarded £1.16m to introduce Violence Reduction Units (VRUs) across Avon and Somerset to tackle serious violence. It follows a proposal put together by a range of agencies after the announcement by the Home Office in June, which saw £35m provisionally allocated to PCCs in 18 police areas as part of the government’s Serious Violence Strategy. The VRUs, which will be set up in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and Somerset, will bring together different organisations including the police, local government, education, health, community leaders and other key partners to tackle violent crime by understanding its root causes. Funding will also be allocated for prevention and early intervention. PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “This additional funding to go towards establishing VRUs is an important step as part of longer term work to reduce the harm being caused by serious violence. Concerns quite rightly have been

growing across the country as we hear of more tragic instances of lives being lost and, in particular, young people both committing and coming to harm. “With this in mind, the VRUs will be tasked with identifying the drivers of serious violence and we will work in collaboration with our partners to develop a co-ordinated response to tackle them. "What is so important about this initiative is that it bring a wide range of agencies together – I am clear that the police cannot solve this problem alone. We need to ensure that together we are capitalising on opportunities to identify vulnerability and intervene early to prevent the harm that violence causes to individuals, communities and society as a whole.” Policing Minister Kit Malthouse said: “To beat knife crime we must do two things: first we need assertive, high profile police enforcement and second, we need a coordinated approach to the long term solutions to violence in society, especially amongst the young. These new units should help us get results on both.”

Children stay fit and fed in school holidays YOUNG people from low-income families in Cadbury Heath are among those who benefited from a school summer holiday scheme to keep them healthy. South Gloucestershire Council ran programmes across the district to provide 5 to 13-year-olds with free, healthy food and physical activities, including football, den building and team games. They were hosted at various locations across South Gloucestershire following a successful launch last year. Juice Community Project ran ‘Fit and Fed’ at Cadbury Heath, Barley Close and Staple Hill for 10 to 13-year-olds and Southern Brooks Community Partnerships hosted ‘Kick Start’ for 5 to 9-yearolds in Almondsbury. The authority also provided packed lunches for a summer school held at Kingswood Library every Monday throughout the holidays that helps children with their reading. Cabinet member for Adult and Public Health, Cllr Ben Stokes, said: “The holidays can be a tough time for some families as they need to provide more food than during term time as well as managing activities and child care. Programmes such as these can really help to relieve the pressure, whilst ensuring that children receive a balanced meal and enjoy some physical activities.” South Gloucestershire Council’s contribution is funded by its public health inequalities budget and health inequalities grants.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

It’s such an honour to become Minister responsible for NHS

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

AS the summer holidays come to an end, I wanted to use this month’s column to say a personal and huge ‘well done!’ to all of the volunteers, traders and members of the community who made the Hanham High Street Summer Fair such a success this year. As a local man and with my constituency office on the High Street, I naturally am delighted to see local, community-led events like the fair go ahead, and I am always more than happy to offer the use of my office as a Lost Child Point and for the organisation of stewards. Members of my office staff had a terrific time helping out on the day and the event – complete

with many varied stalls, a brass band and many wonderful attractions for the children - was a resounding success. I’d like to give a huge thank you to all of those who gave their time to help the Fair take place and to the people of Hanham Community and Trading Partnership for organising the day. Since I’ve been the local MP over the past 10 years, I know that the NHS is one of the most important issues for local people. Since the last Labour government closed Frenchay and threatened Cossham, we’ve seen Cossham receive a £21m upgrade, and new GP buildings such as at Beaufort Road in Emersons Green. Last

month, I was appointed Health Minister by the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson- which is a real honour given my mum worked in the NHS and I sat on the Health Select Committee for three years. As part of our long term plan for the NHS we will be putting an extra £34billion into the NHS by 2023- a real terms rise of 3.4% every single year, over five years. I want to ensure that, both locally and nationally, I work as hard as possible for our NHS, investing not only in new hospitals but also in frontline staff, so that we have a world class health service that can meet every patient’s need.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

Volunteers needed FIRST aid volunteers are needed to help cover a wide range of events in Bristol and Bath - from rugby and running, to festivals and fetes. St John Ambulance is looking to add to its current team of volunteers in order to keep up with the number of events held in the two cities. Craig Wilkins, St John area manager, said: “The charity’s East Bristol unit needs to expand from its current group of 15 volunteers to cover St John’s commitments across a huge part of the city. “Though our team meets in Warmley, we cover a huge patch, encompassing events in Kingswood, Keynsham, Hanham, Longwell Green, Downend, Kingswood, Emersons Green and the new Lyde Green estate – new volunteers are welcome from across the area. “Our Bath team of 20 volunteers provides first aid cover at regular events like rugby fixtures and performances at the Theatre Royal, plus lots of other occasions, including Somerset’s carnivals and the city’s half marathon. “If it’s happening in Bath, we want to be there to support the community; it’s such a vibrant and active city that we need more volunteers to help us keep up with the number of events held locally. “Both the City of Bath and East Bristol teams meet in modern headquarters premises with training facilities and garage facilities for our vehicles. “The units include everyone from first aiders with less than six months’ experience to ambulance crew members with over 20 years in St John, and our volunteers come from all walks of life. Everyone is made very welcome.” An advert has gone live on the health charity’s website (www.sja. org.uk) where you can find out more. For more information on St John Ambulance, including how to make a donation and details of training for the public, schools and businesses, visit www.sja.org.uk or call 08700 10 49 50.

n NEWS FROM METRO MAYOR

Local Industrial Strategy will benefit us all

I HAVE recently been in touch with our new Prime Minister and new government ministers to update them on the progress we’re making and what we can do to deliver more for the West of England. I am always championing our region and I’m confident the government will see that we’re making a real difference, investing to improve where we live, with ambitious schemes such as our MetroWest rail plans which include seven new train stations. I have long been a supporter of devolution because I believe local people who live and work in the region are best placed to understand and respond to the challenges and opportunities that we face. I am pleased the new Prime Minister has signalled that he would like to give more powers and investment for local towns, cities and regions to spend on their priorities. I look forward to exploring how this can

benefit the West of England. On July 19 I was delighted to join regional business, academia and council leaders for the launch of the West of England’s Local Industrial Strategy. The Strategy sets out how we will work towards raising productivity levels and create high-quality, well paid jobs across the West of England. This Strategy is a blueprint for the region which will enable us to showcase our strengths

and ambitions with both the government and businesses looking to invest in the region. To boost productivity and strengthen our economy, I am determined to ensure that everybody can get around the region with good transport connections, and that people have the skills that businesses need. This, coupled with building enough well designed and affordable homes, will help ensure that we continue to

be one of the country’s most attractive and prosperous places to live and work. At the heart of our Local Industrial Strategy, we are connecting businesses, researchers and residents together to drive innovation and test new ideas which will improve peoples’ lives every day. I want to ensure that the innovation, ingenuity and creativity that the West of England is worldfamous for, can be harnessed for everyone. I am working hard to deliver this agenda by prioritising investment in transport infrastructure and skills. I look forward to using our Industrial Strategy to secure investment from government and businesses to further boost our local economy and create new, well paid jobs which benefits everybody working and living in the region. n AROUND THE WIs Longwell Green WI THERE was no meeting in August but Longwell Green WI held their popular Pimms and Puds event this month. This year it was held at Redfield Edge Community Centre and we were very lucky with the weather. A very enjoyable time was had by all who attended. At our September meeting we will be learning about Hives and Herbs. Upcoming events for the Autumn include a harvest supper and a murder mystery event. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for tea and chat. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill

Hanham Afternoon WI NATIONAL Afternoon Tea Week (August 12-18) saw a group of our members venture out to celebrate such an occasion. Traditional afternoon tea on a fine summer afternoon, what could be more appropriate? There are many fantastic choices of setting to savour the delights of an afternoon tea, from quaint tea rooms, 5* hotels and restaurants, to city boutiques or countryside venues. We managed to find a very comfortable and unusual tea room with Eastern and spiritual connections and not too far from home either. The traditional afternoon tea became popular in the mid 19th century and is a ritual which began in Britain. Today, it is usually enjoyed by ladies as an occasional indulgence to mark a special event. Our group of ladies needed no encouragement to join in and consume large quantities of finger sandwiches, cakes, scones with jam and cream,

together with copious amounts of tea. Not only were we using it as the ideal excuse to catch up with friends over a “cuppa” with an assortment of delicacies, but a perfect way to spend a very pleasant couple of hours. I will end on a quote by American novelist Alice Walker: “Tea to the English is really a picnic indoors.” I am sure that everyone will now be looking forward to our next meeting in Hanham Community Centre on September 9 for our harvest bring and buy sale with lunch. Ann Baulch

Mangotsfield WI AS I am sat here typing this, I can hardly believe that we are preparing for our September meeting. We are approaching the last few meetings of 2019, Mary has put together a fantastic programme of events this year. August was a thoroughly excellent social evening, thank you to all the ladies who attended, come rain or shine it's always a successful night. What does September bring? Well, Andy Stowe from East Bristol Auction Rooms is who it brings. Andy will be giving us a talk and then there will be some audience participation. When I say participation, I mean we may discuss antiques, not the membership. If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, mangotsfieldwi@ gmail.com to email the team directly. Members visiting Chavenage House – but no sign of Aidan Turner

Hanham Evening WI CATCHING a glimpse of Poldark actor Aidan Turner riding through the grounds of Chavenage House was high on the agenda of members when the group visited the famous Cotswold manor-house used as the location for “Trenwith”, the Poldark family home, in the famous television series of the same name. Though disappointed they didn’t get to see the latest heartthrob the visit still proved a great success. Contrary to popular belief the house is not situated in Cornwall but near Tetbury in peaceful surroundings which have remained virtually unchanged for 400 years. It is still a family home and apart from Poldark has been used as the location for many television and film productions such as Larkrise to Candleford, Casualty and Tess of the Durbervilles. We arrived in lovely summer sunshine and met our guides for the day who were both family members and treated us to a thoroughly amusing, interesting and educational tour. They explained that the house we see today was built in 1576 in the classical Elizabethan style in the shape of an “E”, showing support for the monarch. It was built by the Fitz Stephen family and remained in their ownership until the 19th century when it was purchased by the Lowsley-William family who still live there today. We heard how the House has had a varied existence and has

seen many distinguished visitors and guests during its lifetime. These range from historical figures to Oscar winning actors such as actor Eddie Redmayne as well of course as Aiden Turner who can often be seen around the place when filming is taking place. A couple of years ago one lucky WI group actually got to meet him but no such luck for us! We were also shown the immaculate, wood-walled rooms where Oliver Cromwell and his General, Ireton, stayed in 1648. Interestingly, we were told, the house played a part in both world wars. It was used as a base for Australian airman during the First World War and In 1944 it was requisitioned and housed American troops planning for the Normandy D-Day landings in France. Our tour was followed by lunch at the house and then an afternoon in Tetbury for a spot of shopping and of course tea and cakes. In contrast to this event one of our members will be organising a MacMillan coffee morning to help raise funds for this worthwhile charity. It will be held on Friday September 27 from 9.30am to 1pm at Hanham Community Centre. There will be a raffle, a bookstall and of course tea, coffee and cakes. There is ample free parking and everyone is welcome to come along. Dianna Coles

n SPOTLIGHT ON HANHAM ATHLETIC FC

One of Bristol's oldest clubs HANHAM Athletic FC are believed to be one of Bristol's oldest football clubs. Established in 1896 and originally called Hanham Football Club, they changed their name to Hanham AFC in 1919. Based at Vicarage Road in Hanham, the club currently run four teams: the 1st team which play in the Gloucestershire County League; Reserves in Bristol & District Division 1; 3rd team in Bristol & District Division 5 and an U18 team in the Bristol Under 18 Combination League Division 2. Hanham have a playing staff of 56, ranging in ages from 15-45, along with eight coaching staff and 14 committee members who assist in the day to day running of the club. This season sees a new management team comprising Paul Dingley and Chris Strawford. The club has recently negotiated a new lease with the council giving them security for the next 25 years at Vicarage Road and are now very much looking to the future. Club chairman Bob Sperring said: “We have plans in place to develop the site to become a “go to” venue on match days and a social outlet for sporting events during the week. We plan to offer food and drink to all on matchdays with a welcoming atmosphere for players, spectators, parents and children to enjoy. “The clubhouse will be initially smartened up with new tables, chairs and lighting but the long term aim is to expand the first floor club area into the existing balcony and glassing this area giving additional social space together with extending the clubhouse on the ground floor area and including an new patio, kitchen, laundry and storage area and improving the bathroom facilities to the highest standard. “The club hopes to become a venue that people hire for parties and other social events and a hub for Hanham residents to utilise on a seven day a week basis. The pitches, changing rooms, playing facilities and kits will be improved with the help of the Football Association and sponsors to make the club an attractive proposition for young players to aspire to improve their game and enjoy social opportunities outside of football.”

Match report HANHAM Athletic picked up three valuable points at home with a 2-1 win over Hardwicke. The home side got off to a flying start after just 3 minutes when Sam Brown’s shot on goal was handled, he took the spot kick himself to give them a 1-0 lead. Hardwicke had a great chance to level on 10 minutes when Tobie Webb was brought down in the box but Bamford saved Paul Carters spot kick. Hardwicke were awarded a second penalty on 39 minutes after Bamford brought down Steve Bick and this time Carter made no mistake with the penalty. The home side grabbed the winner on 85 minutes Jack Fry slotting home after Luke Corbiere’s shot had been saved by the visitors' keeper.

Frys Bowling Club Tuesday July 23: The last 16 of the Somerset Bowls Association Turnbull Cup game saw Frys make the short trip to Keynsham. Keynsham made the better start but Frys were able to stick with them, with rink 4 getting Frys a rink lead. After halfway, the game changed with Keynsham pulling away on rinks 1 and 2 rink 4 pulling back, put Keynsham into a good lead. Rink 3 weren't done yet, and pulled back their rink keeping Frys with a slim chance. With rink 3 a few ends behind, it meant they could go on the attack knowing they needed to overturn a 20+ shot difference. Despite a good effort, they fell short with 2 ends left to play with 20 shots too much to get with Keynsham coming away 88-68 winners. Scores: Rink 1: 13-28; Rink 2: 11-24; Rink 3: 24-23; Rink 4: 20-13; Frys 68-88 Keynsham. Wednesday July 24: Wednesday night was Frys second game in the City and County of Bristol Clarance Davey with Redland Green hosting. A poor start on rink 4 set Frys on the back foot. The other rinks were able to stay in touch, but unable to pull back much ground. After halfway, rink 1 also started losing multiple shots, and with rink 1 not able to improve much, Redland Green won comfortably putting up 98 shots to Frys 54 bringing Frys cup runs to an end. Scores: Rink 1: 9-29;

Rink 2: 22-13; Rink 3: 16-21; Rink 4: 7-35; Frys 54-98 Redland Green. Thursday July 25: The 14th game of the league season saw Frys travel to Long Ashton. Frys were able to take a lead, but with rink 2 falling behind, the game remained tight. The game got even tighter when Long Ashton pulled back on rink 3. Some crucial shots late from rink 2 helped keep Frys in front. Rink 3 were able to hold out to get Frys 2 points, and with Frys comfortably winning rink 1 and picking up 4 shots on their last end, Frys came out 49-41 winners with 8 points moving them into 3rd in the table, 11 points of second with 4 games left. Scores: Rink 1: 22-9; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 15-13; Frys 49-41 Long Ashton (8-2). Thursday August 1: Bottom club BAC travelled to Frys, with the home side looking for the win to keep up the promotion push. A poor start on rinks 1 and 3 saw BAC pull out an early lead. Rink 2 were able to pull a lead for the home side, but Frys still found themselves trailing. Despite Frys holding the game in touching distance, a lack lustre performance from Frys saw BAC come away 48-43 winners with Frys only picking up 2 points from rink 2's win. Scores: Rink 1: 14-18; Rink 2:

16-12; Rink 3: 13-18; Frys 43-48 BAC (2-8). Friday August 2: The first Friday in August saw the 50th edition of the annual Alsop Shield between Frys and Keynsham. Last years winners Frys hosted the game, but a poor start from rink 3 gave the visitors the early lead. With the other rinks holding close, Frys were able to hold the deficit at the halfway point. Rink 3 were able to stop Keynsham pulling away and picking up a few useful shots. With the game entering the final 20 ends, Keynsham still held the lead. However rinks 1 and 4 combined for 21 shots in 8 combined ends turning the game in favour of the home side. Frys entered the final 2 ends of the game 10 shots up. The drama wasn't over as Frys debated a possible measure for the second shot on Rink 2. Frys decided to play the final shot, which the skip drew, jamming the jack between Keynsham's shot bowl and Frys bowl, with the tied end securing the game for Frys. Rink 1 finished the game conceding a single giving Frys a 75-66 win, retaing the Alsop Shield. Score: Rink 1: 21-16; Rink 2: 17-16; Rink 3: 10-24; Rink 4: 27-10; Frys 7566 Keynsham. Thursday August 8: The artificial surface of Imperial was the venue for the 16th game of Frys league season. Both teams got good starts on rinks 1 and 2, with rink 3 remaining tight. the game remained close, but rink 2 lost the final 4 ends

and a poor night on rink 3 cost Frys the win with Imperial coming away 54-50 winner, with 4 points dropping Frys to 5th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 4-30; Rink 2: 27-10; Rink 3: 19-14; Frys 50-54 Imperial (4-6). Thursday August 15: Frys final home game of the league season saw them welcome Avonvale 'A'. A tight start saw neither team gain much of an advantage. Both clubs had rinks edge away with picking up singles and twos. Frys got an advantage on rink 2 giving Frys the halfway lead. Rink 1 continued to pull away giving Frys the upper hand. With rink 1 only conceding a single shot in the game, Frys comfortably won the game, with rink 2 holding out after a tight battle and rink 3 not quite completing a late comeback, took 8 points from the 54-33 win.
