FREE EVERY MONTH IN HANHAM & LONGWELL GREEN

Where do you think new homes should go? PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green have a month left to have their say on future development in the area and across South Gloucestershire. The council is consulting on its Local Plan, which will determine the best places to build at least 1,300 extra homes that are needed. It will also identify where businesses, transport, schools and other services and facilities should go. Residents have already said they want the focus of new development to be on brownfield sites and within existing towns first, so long as they also bring the infrastructure - cycling and walking routes, better public transport and more schools - to support them. But the council says this will not provide enough homes, so it needs to look at other sites. The Kleeneze site in Hanham is suggested as a prime location for building. The plan recognises the strong desire of local people to protect the green belt. To find out more, get involved and help shape the Local Plan visit: www.southglos.gov.uk/ newlocalplanfeb2018.

Primary school proposed for Grange site A NEW primary school could be built on the site of the former Grange School in Warmley. South Gloucestershire Council has identified that there will be a need for school places in the area and says the site could be a good place for a new school. The authority is about to embark on a "masterplanning" exercise which will look at future options for the site. It will focus on education, homes and community sports facilities and how a balance of the three can be achieved. A first draft masterplan will be presented for public consultation later this year. Since the Grange school closed in 2016 there has been speculation about the future of the land. The site is already home to Digitech Studio School, which opened in 2015 and provides a specialised curriculum for progression into the creative digital and high tech sectors for students aged 14-19. Central to future plans will be continued and expanded educational use including access to sufficient outdoor space. Next to the old Grange site is Warmley Park Special School, which is accessed from the site’s main road. The council is committed to spending £350k to provide a dedicated preschool building for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Warmley Park Special School is already undergoing a £5.8m expansion to add new sixth-form,

physiotherapy and changing facilities, together with other improvements, which is expected to be completed later this year. New homes will be a part of the development of the site and the masterplan will look at how to allocate space for housing. The council is currently in discussions with Homes England to explore options to grow stocks of affordable homes in the area, although other alternative developments may come forward. The third objective will be to continue to provide sports facilities and the masterplan will look at ways to balance the demand for new places to live and go to school, with the need for residents and students get outdoors and enjoy sports. The first draft of the masterplan will set out a range

of options to illustrate the ways these priorities can be balanced. Those ideas will then be presented to local people and stakeholders to hear their views. Following that process,

a revised version will be developed for a further round of consultation by early 2019. Cabinet member for Schools, Skills and Employment, Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage, said: "Our aspirations for this site are to use this precious parcel of land at the heart of our community to deliver on three key priorities for local people. "We have set out our requirements of the masterplanning exercise, which are to balance future land use to help us meet the growing demand for school places, homes to live in and to ensure ongoing access to community sports facilities. "We look forward to reviewing the options that will be brought forward and to hearing from local people and community groups as we work together to make the best use of this council land."

Pipe down, park is told Easter egg hunt in Hanham VILLAGERS have complained they are suffering from increasing levels of noise from the sound system at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park in Keynsham Bitton Village Residents’ Association says loudspeaker announcements and commentaries from can be heard not only in their village, but in Swineford and Upton Cheyney. Villagers fear the disturbance will increase if the venue adds more events to its calendar and the association has made formal complaints to South Gloucestershire Council. In response, Avon Valley says it has installed a new speaker system, switching from horn speakers to column speakers to help disperse any noise. Lizzie Arkley, for the park, said: “We are constantly monitoring sound levels and looking at the direction of the speakers and have also been in touch with local councils to ensure we’re doing everything

we’re required to do as a business.” Speakers are used to make announcements every hour between 11am and 5pm during off-peak periods and every 30 minutes at peak times, she said. The attraction, which employs 62 people, welcomed 200,000 visitors last year. A BVRA spokesman said: “The nature of this business has transformed over the years from one that harmoniously complemented its rural, peaceful country, riverside location to one that clashes with its environment and neighbours.Activities have extended from promoting such things as excellent wildlife experiences for children to daily events during the summer that include pig racing and festivaltype events such as the FEAR Festival in October.” Ms Arkley said: “We do have to move with the times but this does not mean we make more noise. We are trying to make the park as educational as we can.”

CHILDREN and their families are being encouraged to take part in an Easter egg hunt in Hanham during the school holidays. The event is sponsored by Hanham Business and Community Partnership and takes place in the High Street. Brightly coloured paper eggs will be hidden in shop windows and free Easter egg activity packs and prizes will be available from Eclectic Gift Shop (51c) where children will also have the chance to design their own egg and hang out in shop's gallery space. The hunt begins on Monday March 26 and runs until Sunday April 8. Mini beasts ready to set up homes in moat CREATIVE children at Barrs Court Primary School rose to the challenge when asked to produce Bug Hotels. The school’s Eco Team decided to hold the competition to help promote the use of the moat and other outdoor areas. Pupils came up with their designs during the February half term and brought them into school for judging. School business manager Karen Llewellyn said: “Staff and children at Barrs Court were extremely impressed with the number of high quality entries submitted and couldn’t believe how innovative the designs were. We even found some bugs had already inhabited the hotels!” The Eco Team decided on winners from each area of the school was agreed upon: Sophie (Reception), Ashton (Red Area), Daniel (Blue Area) and Maddie (Green Area). Mrs Llewellyn said: “Congratulations to the winners. All entries have been placed in one of the outdoor areas around the school so that the children can use them in future outdoor learning. They are very excited to find out which critters set up their home in the hotels.”

Junction 18a:

Determined battle to save green belt CAMPAIGNERS from Siston turned out in force at the South Gloucestershire Council meeting to make the case against the Eastern options for the M4 Junction 18a and link road. They said their village had not been given sufficient consideration in the report to the cabinet. Zillah Savage said: “Siston is a unique and special area and its community cares about the past and looks forward to the ther future.”: It would be as adversely affected as any of the surrounding areas by “a dual carriageway gouged through the green belt”, she added. Mary Webb said the road would slice through every field on the farm that had been in her husband’s family for five generations and would have a catastrophic effect on their lifestyle and income. Lisa Fry said she had moved from the city to a home in the green belt three years ago and had been shocked to hear last year of the possiblility of a road through the area. She said the junction and link road were not wanted or needed but if they were to be built the Western option was preferable as it took much less green belt land.

Tony Payne spoke of the impact of any new road would have on the historic Siston Court and said that if the Eastern option went ahead it would ruin the idyllic ambience of Siston Lane by turning it into a rat run to the M4. Steve Ward said areas in the Siston parish close to the A420 and the A4174 already suffered noise and air pollution, which would worsen if a dual carriageway were built through it. Others agreed that there would be a negative impact on the whole of east Bristol. Rick Dunning, from Pucklechurch Parish Council, said he was glad to see that the recommendations to the cabinet concurred with the parish council’s view that any eastern option was not acceptable.

ANY new junction on the M4 should be at Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire Council has agreed. The council’s cabinet voted unanimously to press the case for the Western option for junction 18a, which would link with the ring road with the aim of reducing congestion and boosting the economy. Members noted the strength of feeling against the Eastern options at Pucklechurch, which were put forward by consultants who carried out a £500,000 feasibility study. The consultation on this study received large-scale engagement from the public, with more than 800 people attending roadshow exhibitions, 1275 returning online questionnaires, and over 300 residents writing letters to the council. Responses showed that 74 per cent of people supported a new junction on the M4. Fifty one per cent of people had a preference

Council votes for new M4 link at Emersons Green for the Western option, 17 per cent supported the Eastern option, and 26 per cent said they did not support either option. Six per cent had no preference on a location. A report to the cabinet showed that the costs of the two options had changed since the consultation was carried out. Western option costs had decreased by £18m to £428m and the Eastern option costs have increased by £31m to £378m. Highways England will need to undertake further reviews of the costs. The report also ruled out a second Eastern option, which would have run close to historic buildings in Pucklechurch, because of “ significant adverse impact on heritage and the surrounding population”. The cabinet was told that the Western option had the potential to enable 5,700 new jobs and generate income of £449m, thus proving it had significantly

higher potential for economic growth than the Eastern Option. The report concluded that there was a strong outline business case for the junction and link road at Emersons Green. Councillor Colin Hunt, cabinet member responsible for transport, said: “Having a new junction on the M4 is a long-standing aspiration of this council as there is a real need to ease congestion in this part of South Gloucestershire and provide better access to homes and jobs. “The option we are recommending that Highways England now progress to the next stage of the process is the Western option. This would create a new junction to the north west of the Lyde Green housing development and would also connect the Westerleigh Road and link up with the A4174 ring road. This is the best available option and will help

support future growth planned for the West of England.” A report to the cabinet showed that the costs of the After the meeting, cabinet member Councillor Ben Stokes, said: “As a local councillor for Pucklechurch and the surrounding villages, I have serious concerns about the Eastern option proposed, which would run a link road for 4km through the green belt near to Pucklechurch. This option has much graver environmental implications, does less to combat congestion at key points on the traffic network, offers less in the way of economic growth, and has one third of the level of public support that the Western option has.” Councillor Jon Hunt, who represents Downend, said: “The main reason for needing a new junction on the M4 is to ease congestion on the M32 and the ring road, which has so many drivers aiming for the M4 who have to travel either to Bristol

or towards Bath. Giving these people the option of joining the motorway earlier will make life easier for local residents, by freeing up road space. The study clearly shows that the Western option is by far the best option for achieving this – to me it is a no-brainer that we have to back this route.” Highways England will decide whether to take the scheme forward to the Department for Transport. Subject to funding and consent, the junction could be built from 2025. Pucklechurch parish councillors, who led a strong campaign against the Eastern options, say they are delighted to have won the first stage of the battle but will keep up their opposition until the proposals are formally dropped, which could be as far away as 2022. Labour councillors at South Gloucestershire have called for the Eastern option to be killed off as soon as possible.

SBL told to do better SIR Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common has been judged by Ofsted to require improvement in all areas. The school had been placed in special measures by the watchdog in 2014 and became an academy in the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust (WMAT) in 2015. In the first inspection since SBL joined the trust, Ofsted said the school was improving but outcomes were not yet good. Pupils with special educational needs were not achieving as highly as they should and those from disadvantaged backgrounds were “suffering from a legacy of underachievement”. Standards of teaching were said to be too variable and the report noted: "Improvements to behaviour are not yet having a strong enough impact on pupils’ attitudes to learning." But lead inspector Lee Northern said the pace of improvement had stepped up since the arrival of principal Dean Anderson in 2017. ‘“The school is now set on a clear and secure path of improvement,” he said. “There have been significant improvements to relationships, clarity of purpose and staff morale throughout the school.” Mr Anderson said he recognised there is still a lot of work to be done. “Nothing in the report has come as a surprise as leaders at all levels have thoroughly evaluated our provision. We know exactly what we need to do to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the academy,” he said. “We are taking urgent action to introduce more challenging lessons, step up our extracurricular provision and ensure our sixth-form provision overall prepares students for life beyond school. We are also continuing to work hard to reduce exclusions and improve attendance.” The report acknowledges the impact of WMAT in helping to secure better outcomes for students.

THERE wasn't a dry eye in the house when tots from Hanham Toddlers Pre-School paraded their Easter bonnets in front of proud parents and grandparents. A total of 73 three and fouryear-olds made hats at home with their mums and dads before bringing them to preschool ready for the parade. They kept families entertained with Easter and spring-themed songs from their 'Song Sack' before it was time to wave goodbye. A further 73 children, part of the pre-school younger group of two to three-year-olds, will take their turn on April 9. Lorraine Bunting, preschool manager, said: "The children made their own bonnets at home and brought them in especially for the parade. There were so many brilliant hats and the children looked amazing. As usual, we had fantastic support from the children's families who loved coming in to watch the parade."

Pride as school overcomes troubles A KINGSWOOD primary school where every teacher quit has maintained its good Ofsted rating and is now described as "thriving". Our Lady of Lourdes, in Hanham Road, saw a 100 per cent turnover of teachers following mass resignations. A new teaching team led by executive head Louisa Wilson is in place and the school has been visited by Ofsted for the first time since the upheaval. Inspector Tracy Hannon, acknowledged the school has gone through some tough times. Her report said: "For a short while, the school experienced some turbulent times. All senior leaders and teachers left the school within just over a year. Governors have been persistent in their pursuit of improvement. They have not shied away from difficult decisions." The inspector said Ms Wilson has led the Catholic school with a "relentless ambition for high standards" and established a culture of high aspirations. "All staff report that they are proud to work in the school. The

majority of pupils are diligent and display exemplary attitudes to learning. Parents and carers report their growing confidence in the school." The new headteacher, Nick Bracey, who joined the school in January, is described as having "an acute understanding of the strengths of the school and the areas that require further work". According to the report, parents speak highly of the headteacher’s work and welcome his appointment. In 2016, the number of pupils reaching the expected standards by the end of Key Stage 2 in reading, writing and mathematics dropped to 24 per cent, well below the national average. In the national assessments in 2017, pupils’ achievement increased and was above the national average.

Also praised was a strong culture of safeguarding, the increasingly effective teaching of phonics, the highly effective teaching of English and additional support for disadvantaged pupils. Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage, cabinet member responsible for schools, said: "I’m delighted for everyone at Our Lady of Lourdes for having achieved this latest judgement from Ofsted. The school has experienced a lot of change over the past year and I am pleased to see that thanks to a lot of hard work and commitment, staff feel proud of their school and the pupils are thriving as a result. "The council worked closely with the governors and the diocese to help appoint Louisa as the national leader of education to drive up standards. Combined with Nick Bracey’s appointment as the new headteacher, it’s no surprise that inspectors have picked up on the fact that children are enjoying school." After Easter, Ms Wilson will return to St Stephen's Juniors, which is rated outstanding.

Dancing the night away in loving memory of dad John LOVERS of rockabilly and northern soul came together at a charity do in Hanham to raise more than £1,000 for St Peter's Hospice. The event, at Hanham Community Centre on March 17, was organised by rockabilly Pete Bryant who was inspired to raise money after his dad, John, was diagnosed with liver cancer. John, 75, from Kingswood, had been planning to attend and donate £50 to the cause, but sadly died on the Tuesday before the event. Pete, 49, put on a brave face and was determined his 120 guests should have the time of their lives and raise as much money as possible for St Peter's. Spinning the tunes were DJs Malc the Talc, Pop Up Pete, Jim Cook, Simon Flintstone and James Manu who gave their time free of charge. The dance floor quickly filled and guest danced the night away to classic rockabilly, northern soul, ska and reggae tunes. Proceeds from the £5 tickets went to St Peter's with funds further boosted by a raffle and blind auction. Prizes included tickets to watch Bristol Rovers and Bristol City, full car service,

"He died on the Tuesday before so the night without him just seemed surreal. I took £50 out of my dad's wallet and on the night I put the money in the bucket and told dad that's what I was doing. I just felt I wanted to make a point of doing that and I was hoping he was looking down and could see what I'd done." The event was Pete's second fundraiser following his dad's

diagnosis in December 2016. The previous one, held at the community centre last March, raised £750, also for St Peter's Hospice. Pete, who now lives in Patchway, said: "To raise £1,181 is unbelievable. When I gave the money to St Peter's they were surprised by how much was raised just from one night. "Everyone really embraced the fundraising and were happy to put their hands in their pockets and donate. Everyone loved the music and had a brilliant time. "My dad wasn't looked after by St Peter's but I picked that charity because it's close to home and they do an amazing job of looking after local people who have cancer. "My dad told me just before he died that he was proud of what I was doing. He said 'You're doing a really good job there, my son'."

Salute to our quiet community heroes

TWO friends, affectionately known as the gardening pixies, were among tbose to receive awards for their efforts from the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Ian Blair. Barbara Pyle and Maureen Parsons are active fundraisers in Warmley, where they donate and sell home-made knitted garments, cakes and preserves. They also volunteer to regularly help at St Barnabas and Siston church and the community centre, where they have taken on the gardening duties, ensuring that the flower beds are weeded and the containers are well stocked with plants. Maureen and Barbara are also both active members of the Ladies Friendship Group Warmley, which plays an important role in reducing social isolation. In addition they knit for charities such as the poppy appeal, premature baby units and for the homeless. Patricia Webb received an award for her work as a representative on the Patient Participation Group at Close Farm Surgery, North Common. Pat has previously worked in the health service and she keeps in touch and visits a number of people who she met through her nursing duties. Many are elderly, have disabilities, and are housebound. “Nothing is ever too much trouble for Pat,”

her citation saidl Also honoured was Richard Gee, who volunteers at least four times a week as a driver for Kingswood Community Transport, where he is also a member of the board. “He will always go the extra mile, willingly providing cover for weekend and evening trips and when any of the permanent drivers are on holiday. ” the awards ceremony was told.

Councillor Blair attended the celebration event along with the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Dame Janet Trotter and Vice Lord Lieutenant Robert Bernays, Group Chief Executive & Executive Principal of South Gloucestershire & Stroud College Kevin Hamblin and Principal and Deputy Chief Sara-Jane Watkins. Winners were presented with certificates by Cllr Blair and Sara-Jane Watkins.

New Look store to close

FASHION chain New Look will close its Kingswood store, it has been confirmed. The struggling retailer announced on March 21 that it will shut 60 of its 593 UK stores, including the women's store at Kings Chase Shopping Centre. Stores in Keynsham and Clevedon will also shut. In an interview with the BBC, New Look executive chairman Alistair McGeorge said the chain needed to enter a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) - an insolvency procedure involving creditors - to restore profits. Mr McGeorge said: "It is clear we need to reduce our fixed cost base. We are therefore pleased to have gained the support of our creditors to address our over-rented store estate. The nationwide closures will mean the loss of up to 1,000 jobs. Store closures will take place over the next 12 months, with some staff already deployed to different locations. New Look was founded in Somerset in 1969 by Tom Singh.

Willsbridge Mill, by Richard Hopkins, of Hanham Photographic Society

Thanks to local snow heroes

SEVERAL snowfalls in March created some beautiful scenes around our area - and caused headaches for many people struggling to get out and about. In the wake of the unseasonal weather, the three group leaders at South Gloucestershire Council thanked all those who went out of their way to help. Councillors Matthew Riddle, Ruth Davis and Pat Rooney said: “On behalf of the council we would like to extend our thanks to the people with 4 x 4 vehicles who volunteered their time to help others get about following the heavy snowfall at the beginning of the month. “Their response to calls from the local NHS for 4 x 4 drivers to help get patients and healthcare professionals to where they needed to go demonstrated a tremendous community spirit in South

Gloucestershire. “Thank you to council staff for their efforts in keeping the majority of services running despite the sub-zero temperatures. Whether it was delivering community meals, making sure essential care continued to be delivered to people in need or getting the district’s roads gritted, we appreciate the commitment shown to keep South Glos moving.”| Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees issued a similar message in the city, thanking everyone who helped to safeguard the health and wellbeing of citizens He also praised the 120 volunteer community snow wardens and all the people who helped encourage rough sleepers to take up one of the extra temporary beds provided by the city’s charity sector so that homeless people weren't out in the cold.

Revised homes plan set for go-ahead PLANS to build 77 homes off Greenbank Road in Hanham look set to get the go-ahead. South Gloucestershire Council is recommending the plans for the land between Aek-Boco Football Club and The Church of the Ascension are approved, subject to conditions. The decision has been delegated to the authority's chief planning officer and was expected to have been made by March 28. It follows a public consultation back in July when residents were invited to look at the proposals and have their say before the plans were officially placed with the authority. As a result of feedback from locals, the plans were tweaked in an attempt to alleviate concerns. The application - submitted by Square Bay and Bellway Homes - seeks to develop the vacant six and a half acre site with 77 two, three and four

bed homes, 27 of which will be affordable, in line with the council’s policy. The plans include two separate accesses on to Greenbank Road, 129 private parking spaces along with 43

garage parking spaces and 16 spaces for visitors. Improvements will be made to the children’s play area located to the south of the site, providing additional play opportunities for local children.

A highway improvement scheme for Greenbank Road is included, which will provide facilities for pedestrians as well as traffic management measures to remove existing bottlenecks and reduce vehicle speeds, both along the street itself and at the junction with Hollyguest Road. The proposals met with a mixed reaction from people living nearby with many saying Greenbank Road is not suitable for the extra traffic the scheme will generate. They also expressed concern about Hanham losing yet another open space and fears the homes would put pressure on local schools and doctor surgeries. But some said the plans were more sympathetic than they had expected and welcomed the chance for updated play facilities. Hanham Parish Council lodged a formal objection to the plans, along with eight residents.

Fantasy fiction wins youth vote FANTASY fiction novel Shadow Magic has been chosen as the 2018 winner of South Gloucestershire’s Concorde Book Award. Author Sarwat Chadda, writing under the pseudonym Joshua Khan, beat off competition from five other young people’s fiction titles to claim the literature prize. Students from Hanham Library Bookwurms and King's Oak Academy and other secondary schools and library reading groups read their way through the shortlisted titles. Votes were cast on World Book Day and the winner was announced at a gala event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park at Emersons Green. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Ian Blair presented the award. He said: “I’m thrilled to have been involved with the Concorde Book Award this year. Congratulations to all the young people who have

taken part, their enthusiasm and love for reading really is inspiring." The Concorde Book Award is a long-running ‘young

people’s Booker’ run by South Gloucestershire schools and public libraries. The scheme aims to promote a love of reading among 11-14

year olds (Year 7 to 9 secondary school students, Key Stage 3), and thousands of young people have taken part since it was launched in 2007.

World Book Day at Samuel White's

PUPILS from Samuel White's Infant School embraced World Book Day despite the snow. Children from all years headed to school wearing an impressive array of book-related costumes. They spent a fun morning celebrating the special day but their fun was cut short when the school was forced to close early.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

Headteacher Gabby Christopher said: "Despite the snowy weather, our children still arrived in their costumes and had a fun morning! "We had activities planned for the afternoon but we decided to close at 1pm due to the bad weather."

Hanham Library What’s On South Gloucestershire Libraries is delighted to announce a new resource, An Adventurer’s Companion, is now available through its library network and online at www.creativelibraries. org.uk. An Adventurer’s Companion is designed to inspire anyone working with a group to help them explore their creativity in new and surprising ways and is particularly aimed at those supporting participants with low mood, depression or dementia. The resources mark the culmination of a three-year Arts Council England funded arts project in South Gloucestershire Libraries to work creatively to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and investigate how the arts can be used to explore

library spaces in new ways. The project was open to anyone experiencing mental health difficulties, including people living with dementia and their families and carers. “I haven’t felt so energised and creative in years.” said one participant The Adventurer's Companion is presented as a travelling companion - a bespoke suitcase of exercises, resources, ideas and inspiration drawn from the project developed by artist, Liz Clarke. It is accompanied by a website www.creativelibraries. org.uk where you can recreate the activities yourself and embark on your own journeys and adventures. Our day of photography usually finishes with lunch at a local hostelry, to put the photographic world to rights. In future articles we will show you more photographs from our members, with more in depth information on the subjects and the thought process behind the images. Calling rail enthusiasts!

THE FIRST meeting of a new train spotters’ group takes place later this month at Bitton Station. The meeting will be held in the Avon Valley Rail Buffet at the station in Bath Road on Friday April 20 from 11am. It will give an opportunity for people with an interest in trains to chat to like-minded people over a cup of tea or coffee and talk about ideas they may have for the new train spotters' group. The meeting has been made possible thanks to Curo Community Connectors, a project in South Gloucestershire which helps people get involved in their community and improve their wellbeing. As part of this project, which is funded by South Gloucestershire Council, Community Connectors helps to

start groups where there are gaps and need in the community. If you would like to find out more about the group or you are unable to make the first meeting, please contact Sam, Curo wellbeing worker, on 07527 061977. During the past eighteen months more than 40 new groups have been started by Community Connectors. The groups become self-managing and help to enhance people’s wellbeing. If you would like help to start a new group in your community where there is a gap and a need, contact Hilary Jay, Curo community connector, on 07779 2495367. You may be entitled to claim the start-up grant of £200 for your new group.

Spate of attacks on cars POLICE are asking for witnesses and information after they received 18 reports of cars being damaged in Kingswood. Twelve vehicles were scratched overnight Friday 16 to Saturday 17 February in the Highview Road, Willis Road and Reddings areas. CCTV shows a possible suspect and suggests the offences took place between 3.30am and 4.06am on the Tuesday morning. A further six cars were damaged in the same area overnight Monday 5 to Tuesday 6 March in the same streets. Again CCTV indicates that it happened at around 1am on the Tuesday morning. House-to-house enquiries have been carried out and details of the incidents have been shared through Neighbourhood Watch. Officers continue to appeal for anyone with any information which could help their investigations to get in touch online, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5218039863. Neighbourhood PC Wayne Hick said: "We appreciate the impact this is having on those directly affected and the wider community. This sort of damage can cost hundreds of pounds to repair and we’re working hard to identify the offender. "From the CCTV it appears the individual responsible is a man of medium to large build, wearing dark trousers, a light coloured top and a hat. I would ask anyone who spots someone behaving suspiciously around vehicles in this area of Kingswood to call us straight away. "We’d also like to hear from you if you have any other information which could help. If you’d prefer not to speak directly to us, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call and you could qualify for a reward."

n BOOK REVIEW

April, 2018

The Birdwatcher by William Shaw

SOME of you may know this author for his series of crime novels set in sixties London. This is a novel, which also has a period feel about it, as the main character Sergeant William South, grew up in Northern Ireland during the time of the “Troubles”. The book moves back and forward between those times and the present day. William is a policeman with many years’ service but has never been involved in a murder case. He lives at Dungeness, on the Kent coast. A place his mother took him to, when he was fourteen, and they were running away from Ireland. If you have ever been there, as I have, you will know it is a most unusual location. Miles of shingle beaches, with lots of bungalows dotted around, all in the shadow of a huge nuclear power station. It is definitely Marmite. You either love or loathe it. William, being a keen birdwatcher loves it and still lives in the house where he grew up. He is therefore distraught, when his friend, neighbour and fellow birdwatcher Rob is found brutally beaten to death. He investigates the murder with Alexandra Cupidi, a stressed single mum, who has left the Met after a disastrous affair with one of her colleagues. There are many twists and turns in this book, some of them relating to William’s former life in Northern Ireland. I am not sure, if this is a standalone novel or the start of a new series, but I found it to be a most compelling read. By Joy Downend Library

Man breaks bail A MAN who was charged with two counts of attempted child abduction reappeared in court after breaking bail conditions. Kai Hudson, 26, was charged after an alleged incident in which two 11-year-old girls were approached by a man in Regent Street, Kingswood at about 5.30pm on Sunday March 4. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Bristol Magistrates Court on March 6 and was given conditional bail pending a trial of Bristol Crown Court. Hudson, of Fishponds, reappeared before magistrates on March 12 after the conditions of his bail were broken. He was again granted conditional bail and was released until his trial date. Hudson is expected to appear at Bristol Crown Court on April 6.

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR March topic was a presentation by Ian Caskie on the history of the SS Great Britain, from its launching in 1843 and maiden voyage in 1845 to when it was left as a wreck in the Falkland Islands and its return for restoration and conservation in the dock where she was constructed in Bristol. The evening concluded with many members saying it was one of the best talks we had heard. On April 3, Peter Fleming will tell us about the Battle of Nibley Green in 1470 - the last battle fought in England between private armies. We will hear how the confrontation between Thomas Talbot 2nd Viscount Lisle and William 2nd Baron Berkeley was resolved. Surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20.

Attack on blind woman POLICE are hunting a thug who attacked a blind lady in Staple Hill and then ran off laughing. The 41-year-old woman had caught a bus at the Soundwell Road/Portland Street stop, at 7.45am on Tuesday March 13. She left the bus at about 7.55am at the end of Soundwell Road, near Page Road car park. Just after she got off she was assaulted by an unknown suspect who punched her several times in the torso and laughed. Officers are keen to hear from anyone who was travelling along Soundwell Road at around 8am on the Tuesday morning, especially anyone who may have travelled on the same bus. Beware doorstep tricksters

With PC Lee Humphreys

W

E'VE had calls in February and March about a man claiming to have cleared guttering – unasked – at homes in Hanham and Kingswood and demanding payment.

Twice householders were persuaded to hand over cash, but thankfully most people turned him away. We’ve carried out house to house enquiries in the areas affected, handed out ‘No Cold Calling’ stickers and arranged for the Bobby Van to visit. South Gloucestershire Trading Standards officers are now investigating. Remember: it’s your doorstep, your decision. Always use the door chain and if you’re in any doubt about a caller keep them out. If you feel threatened or intimidated call 999 straight away. Otherwise report it on 101. • We get more calls about antisocial behaviour (ASB) as the weather improves. The term covers a wide range of issues, including noisy neighbours, inconsiderate vehicle use, littering, damage and rowdy or drunken behaviour. Because of this we, South Gloucestershire Council and

housing providers all have powers to deal with different aspects of it, and work closely so we can all enjoy our community spaces and feel safe in our homes. We need evidence to take action, so please report issues as they happen, with as much information as you can. It helps us build a picture of what’s happening, where and when, enabling us to target our response and bid for resources. Find more information on reporting ASB from www. avonandsomerset.police.uk or www.southglos.gov.uk Young people often get blamed for ASB. We’ll tackle those who cause issues, but remember most just want to meet their friends. Parents and carers can help to keep their children safe and out of trouble by making sure they know where they are and who they’re with. From PC Lee Humphreys

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM AFTERNOON WI OUR March meeting was a very busy afternoon; firstly it was our annual members bring and buy sale which was well supported. And as always, speakers at our meetings, as many of our regular readers will know, are informative and frequently hilarious. However, on this occasion it was a very moving talk but not entirely without a humorous side. We were delighted to welcome Oliver from the Children’s Hospice South West at Charlton Farm, Wraxall. Oliver described to us that their work of caring for children with life-limiting conditions also extends to support of the whole family at a very critical time and frequently as a healing process into the future. There were truly some heart-breaking tales but essentially the work of the hospice is to meet the needs and requests of patients wherever possible, some being not quite so ordinary. For example, one lad had said that he wanted to rob a bank no less! OK, consider it done. With the help of a bank in Nailsea the boy was kitted out in a balaclava and taken into the branch. "Give me the money," he demanded, which the staff handed over. The bank was very supportive as everyone enjoyed the boy’s rather slow getaway in his wheelchair; they really had helped capture great memories. Our talk concluded with photographs of the hospice and an invitation for us to visit. And as an appreciation of the informative afternoon,

members were quite forthcoming in offering their donations and also without hesitation everyone agreed that all remaining items from our sale earlier in the afternoon should also be donated to their fundraising shops. We offered our thanks to Oliver for coming to visit us and telling us about his work and that of everyone at Charlton Farm when it is particularly most needed and sometimes unexpected. It did, indeed, put life into perspective for us all, to say the very least. Hanham (Afternoon) WI meets the second Monday of every month at Hanham Community Centre from 1.304pm.

HANHAM EVENING WI “CAN You Play Jerusalem?” was the title of the talk given by this month’s speaker Dr Francis Burroughs. Of course, Jerusalem is the one word that brings to mind the WI and was therefore an apt title for an attentive, captive audience. No, this wasn’t a talk about the place but more a compilation of his experiences whilst speaking at various WI events around the country. Members had been suffering withdraw symptoms following the non-arrival of last month’s speaker when she was involved in a car accident on the way to give her talk. Fortunately, she wasn’t injured and we extend her our best wishes. We look forward to hearing her talk at a future date. But, through Dr Burroughs, an experienced and regular

Shed that shyness! MEN'S Sheds, a social group where men can meet and pursue practical interests while making new friends, is coming to Longwell Green. The first meeting of Men's Sheds @ The Green is planned for next month.Similar groups in Downend and Patchway have proved extremely popular. The thinking behind it is that men often find it more difficult than women to build social connections and can feel at a loss, particularly after they retire from paid work. This is a way of tackling the resulting isolation. For details, contact Alison on 0117 9323722.

Branch President Pam Hunt receiving the Cup on behalf of the branch following victory over the Natural History Society WI speaker, we soon put last month’s disappointment behind us by listening to his witty anecdotes of life on the WI circuit. He contrasted his experiences when arriving at different venues. There was one WI branch that offered him a Pimms on arrival whilst another offered him absolutely nothing, not even a tea or coffee. However, there was a twist at the end of his talk when he was invited to have lunch with the branch in an adjoining room which turned out to silver service no less! He once arrived at a venue in remote Cornwall on a dark and bleak night only to find the place deserted and locked up. He had to wait ages, not sure if anyone was coming until eventually a dozen members arrived. They then sat around an electric fire in a circle while he gave his talk. He said he thought immediately of “the Scottish play”. They then took one and a half hours on their internal business before

Keep on dancing SPLASH of Soul returns once again on Sunday April 8. The northern soul event was established several years ago and has been gaining momentum ever since. April's do will see guest appearances from the Rendell Brothers from Glastonbury Soul Club as well as usual DJs, Martyn Johnson, Jimmy Manu and Malcolm Beedle. Splash of Soul takes place at Barton Hill Rugby Club in Duncombe Road, Speedwell, from 2-8pm. Entry is £3.

inviting him to speak by saying that he only had 30 minutes to give his talk before the electricity went off. They told him they wouldn’t put any more money in the meter because if they didn’t use it all up then the “Young Wives Group” would get the advantage of it at their meeting. He compared this to the group when, coming to the end of his talk after speaking for the best part of an hour, he was asked if could carry for a further 30 minutes as the next speaker hadn’t turned up. We thoroughly enjoyed an hilarious evening listening to him and look forward to more of his tales next year when he returns to talk to us. You couldn’t make it up. In February we saw ducks galore as the branch played its annual skittles challenge cup match against the Hanham Natural History Society. Both groups are based at Hanham Community Centre but this annual match is played on neutral ground at Longwell Green Community Centre. It is a popular social evening and well attended by members, family and friends of both groups. The game was played in a friendly atmosphere with both sides giving and receiving plenty of light hearted banter. For many years the History Society have held the upper hand in this challenge match but last year and, more emphatically, this time around the WI team have come out as winners. An excellent buffet supper rounded off a very enjoyable evening and left us looking forward to defending the cup next year.

BMX takes off CHILDREN and young people in Hillfields are enjoying the thrills and spills of BMX now that the local track has been rebuilt. The project is under way thanks to funding from Bristol City Council, Sport England, British Cycling, and the John James Foundation. It is led by Access Sport’s new BMX programme in Bristol. Team members have been visiting schools to introduce pupils to the sport, teach bike maintenance, and help create the Hillfields BMX club. Prostate problems: it's not always cancer, but you need to see your GP CONVERSATIONS about a man’s prostate are usually very embarrassing or uncomfortable for anyone. However, Consultant Urologists Professor Raj Persad and Mr Anthony Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital are promoting the awareness of symptoms and treatments surrounding this topic to get men talking. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local. The condition known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on the quality of life for an individual. BPH puts pressure on the bladder causing a variety of symptoms including; having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder and even having to urinate more frequently (especially at night),

subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed by anyone. We asked Consultants Professor Persad and Mr Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital, what can be done if diagnosed with an enlarged prostate? “Sometimes presentation of prostate cancer can mimic the symptoms of BPH, so I advise you to consult your GP at the earliest opportunity to be sure. As for treatment for BPH, the mainstream therapy to date has been tablets for milder forms of prostatic obstruction or surgery for the more severe. Surgery can be fraught with side-effects excessive bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems - whilst tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems.” said Consultant Urologist, Mr Koupparis. There is, however, a revolutionary technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief, improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the

invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of tablets. It involves no blood loss or 'cutting' and takes 10-15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, prising open the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Professor Persad “'It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPH - only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable” He continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital within the same day. The treatment is increasing in popularity as men can be put off by traditional surgical methods for fear of becoming impotent. For more information on the procedure or to book an appointment to see a Consultant Urologist, contact Spire Bristol today on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com.

Anyone for tennis at Lyde Green? THE long wait for a leisure centre for Emersons Green could soon be over. Plans have gone in to South Gloucestershire Council for a David Lloyd centre, to include covered tennis courts, sports halls, indoor and outdoor pools, and gym and spa facilities. Proposals for a David Lloyd centre were first mooted early in this millennium. They were initially said to be against long-term plans for the area but were approved on appeal in 2005. Planning approval was again granted in 2010 but David Lloyd requested a time extension “due to other financial commitments in the business”. The organisation has now worked with the council to come up with a scheme for the site between the ring road and Folly Brook at Lyde Green which it says is better than the original. The nearest public facility is Downend Outdoor Sports Centre and the closest indoor public centres and pools are at Kingswood, Yate and Longwell Green while the closest David Lloyd Centre is at Westbury-on-Trym, nearly eight miles away. The site is off the Rosary roundabout and because of its proximity to the ring road and to overhead power lines is

considered unsuitable for alternative forms of development. The scheme will be considered by the council's planning committee. T0 comment on the South Gloucestershire website, search the reference PK18/0692/F

David Lloyd centres, founded by a former GB Davis Cup player, employ more than 6,000 people, including 400 tennis coaches. In the UK, they have 800 tennis courts, 180 badminton courts and 140 squash courts, and 150 swimming pools.

Grease is the word at John Cabot Academy STUDENTS at John Cabot Academy put on their own spectacular version of Grease for their annual production. More than ninety students from Years 7 to 11 auditioned for the hotly contested parts, with 50 making it through the final audition and into the cast. Stars of the all-singing, alldancing musical, set in California 1959, included Charley Adams, Year 10, as greaser Danny Zuko and Annabelle Grant, Year 11, as new student Sandy Olsson. The show, about teens in love, also featured members of the gang the T-Birds, a gang of black leather jacket-wearing greasers, and the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-jacket wearing girls led by Rizzo. The musical was supported by an impressive live five-piece student band consisting of Year 11s and a Year 10 student. Lights and sound was managed by Mr Bridges and Mr Kennedy and their technical team of Key Stage 3 students.

The production has been more than four months in rehearsal, with students giving up time in their holiday and after school. The show ran for three sellout nights and had the audience dancing in the aisles to hits from the show that included ‘You’re the one that I want’ and ‘Greased Lightning’. Emily Grainger, drama teacher and Charlotte Grierson, music teacher, said: "This was our first joint production and we have been really overwhelmed by the amount of students that wanted to get involved. We are very proud of their hard work, commitment and achievement in putting on this amazing production. A big thank you must also go to staff and parents who have supported us in the process. Grease is the word!” The T-Birds and Pink Ladies

also performed segments from the show to Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cottrell.

They sang hits, acted scenes and undertook a Q&A with pupils at the school.

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

Productive veg growing for small spaces An allotment may not be high on the demands of many people for various reasons, family and work commitments for example may not afford the time to enjoy a plot. But having one’s own tiny veg garden at home could be the answer if you want to enjoy a small selection of fresh vegetables and salad crops that’ll taste far better than any comparable product you can buy, even in the smallest of spaces. In just a few hours we recently created what is generally referred to as a square foot garden to grow individual varieties of vegetables in each 12 inch square space that our bed has been divided into. Using 6 inch wide timber and four corner posts we made a bed that measures 6 foot by 4 foot, though this could be adapted to fit any space you have available. The only main requisites are that it is located in a sunny position and filled with good quality compost.

The bed could be placed over an existing under-used bed, or grassed area. Wherever you decide to locate it, the ground should require little if any preparation. You could even place it over a hard surface, though deep rooted crops such as longer carrots will be restricted. To help overcome this to some extent would be to use 8 inch deep sides on the bed. Once the bed is built and in position it needs to be filled with compost. Your plants will be hungry and require nutrients to feed them so look for the best your budget allows. All composts you buy will differ in texture and this will vary the amount you need. Fill the bed straight from the bag; in our photo we have used a brown cardboard underlying membrane, this is not absolutely necessary but it will help suppress any weed

growth and retain moisture. Once the bed is filled it needs to be compressed, this will help plants to secure their roots. Simply walk on it or place a board on top to gain a more even firmness. This will reduce it considerably and you’ll need to top it up again, maybe twice. As rule of thumb, allow about 20 to 25 litres of compost per square foot. To help reduce the cost of filling the bed, you could use homemade compost or old spent mushroom compost will do equally as well. We divided our bed into 12 inch squares for each vegetable to grow using string secured with screws at each end; this is our optical guide for growing each vegetable. So here’s the best bit, what can we

plant? Let’s start at the back. So that your bed is not in shade for most of the day you could plant a

runner bean in one square and a climbing French bean in another, even a single plant of each will provide rich pickings, perhaps add a couple of sweet peas in the next square. These will all need support with canes as they’ll grow up to 6 foot tall adding variety and attracting bees. Baby leeks should do well if placed into another square in the next row then lower growing crops in the rows towards the front so everything gains maximum sunlight. This could include beetroot, spring onions, radish, turnip, swede, single lettuce or try mixed salad leaves each with their own square. Even a courgette could go in one of the front corners, but you’ll need to keep an eye on this as it will spread and need to be trained to fall over the sides and trail away from the bed so it does not invade the other plants. To prolong your cropping season it could be worth investing in a couple of six or twelve cell trays to pre-sow seeds and transplant as modules when one crop has finished. Use one tray to plant a different crop in each cell. For example, just one cell in a tray

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

could accommodate five beetroot seeds, same with radish, or up to ten spring onions. When these are ready for transplanting, simply lift out of the cell, do not separate but plant as a clump, they’ll grow quite happily together. Many crops can be done this way. In fact, about the only seeds that do not take kindly to pre-sowing and transplanting are parsnips and carrots. Your mini-veg garden will, with just minimal maintenance and careful watering, provide a fascinating selection of crops over the coming months. Possibly, the only crops not within the scope of your garden would be the larger brassicas, such as cabbages, sprouts etc. We’ll keep you posted on how our square foot garden develops, and if you decide to have a go, please let us know how you get on. Good luck and have fun! Nicholas Lane St. George BS5 8TY. Email: beaanews@gmail.com www.bristoleastallotments.com or call 0117-932-5852

n VETS' ADVICE

What should I do if my dog eats chocolate? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Dr Lisa Redgrave BVetMed(Hons) MRCVS

IF you suspect your dog may have eaten any type of chocolate always call your vet immediately for advice. Let them know which type of chocolate it is, how much you think they may have eaten, and preferably keep any packaging that might help the vet determine what has been consumed. Chocolate contains theobromine which cannot be metabolised by dogs and is therefore highly toxic with potentially fatal side effects if not treated quickly. Knowing the type of chocolate can help to determine the seriousness of the amount eaten. Dark chocolate can be highly toxic if eaten even in small amounts. Milk chocolate has much lower levels of theobromine and is therefore less dangerous in small amounts, but this completely depends on the size of the dog.

Small dogs are particularly vulnerable to toxicity from small amounts. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and is less likely to cause effects, however it is full of sugar, which has its own negative side effects, and still should not be fed to your dog under any circumstances. With Easter upon us and our houses fill with chocolate eggs and treats, it is important that everyone in the family is aware of the dangers and keeps their goodies well out of pets’ reach. Dogs can sniff out chocolate, rip off the packaging and devour it in no time at all. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhoea, abnormal heart rhythms, increased body temperature, tremors, seizures and respiratory failure. Chocolate poisoning at its very worst can

result in death from heart attacks, seizures, coma or respiratory failure. All veterinary practices have a 24 hour emergency service so if, despite all your efforts, your dog does get hold of your chocolate and eat it, please call the emergency number straight away for advice. If you are a Keynsham Veterinary Centre client, remember out hospital in Whitchurch has a veterinary team onsite 24 hours a day if you need it – call 01275 832410. On a brighter note, may we wish you and your pets a very Happy Easter! Dr Lisa Redgrave BVetMed(Hons) MRCVS
