Inspiring young learners Ofsted praises education at Samuel White's PUPILS at an infant school in the heart of Hanham are celebrating another Good rating from education watchdog Ofsted. The 253 boys and girls at Samuel White's Infant School have been told by inspector Wendy Marriott that the school is in a much stronger position that at the last inspection, when it was also rated as Good. “The school has demonstrated strong practice and marked improvement in specific areas since its last inspection,” she said. Ms Marriott said pupils were enjoying learning: “The school’s vision is to inspire and celebrate learning. Teachers and leaders with strong subject knowledge plan imaginative ways for pupils to learn.” The inspector praised headteacher Gabby Howells, who started at the school in 2016. The report said she works closely with Hanham Primary Federation headteacher Mike Coyne to develop high-quality teaching and learning. Turn to Page 2

In 2018 assessments, standards at the end of reception and at the end of Year 2 in reading, writing and mathematics were above the national average. SEND pupils also make positive progress, the report said. All parents who responded to Ofsted's online survey, Parent View, said they would recommend the school. Ms Marriott commented on the arrival of a T-Rex model (pictured above with pupils) in the school hall. This was the start of “exciting and deep learning” in history and science, she said. In order for the school to improve further, teachers should continue to develop pupils’ vocabulary and enthusiasm for writing, the inspector said. Samuel White's became a primary federation with its site neighbour Hanham Abbots Junior School in September 2013, just months after being told it requires improvement. Since then the school in Abbots Avenue has gone from strength to strength. In just two years, staff turned the verdict around and welcomed a Good rating in 2015.

Federation headteacher Mike Coyne said: “The staff and governors are very pleased with this report and I feel it reflects the hard work of everyone involved. The federation is ambitious for both schools and keen for Samuel White’s to continue to improve from this position of strength. We were particularly delighted by the strong support of parents during the inspection and that 100 per cent of parents said they would recommend Samuel White’s Infant School. This outcome, along with the popularity of the school in the local community, is a testament to the skill and dedication of the staff team.” Carl Lander, chair of the federation board, said: “We could not be more pleased with the outcome of the recent inspection. It demonstrates what a great start Samuel White’s Infant School offers our local children to make the best of their school age years.” *The school is seeking to recruit new governors to join their board. If you have a passion for education and can offer your time please contact the clerk of governors via Samuel White’s school.

Lifting the lid on period poverty

A SIMPLE box is making a world of difference to students who might have been forced to skip school in the past – simply because of their periods. Nine schools, including Hanham Woods and John Cabot academies, are being supplied with boxes filled with sanitary products and new underwear thanks to the Red Box Project Keynsham. Jackie Sheehan, from Keynsham, who coordinates the project with neighbour Vicki Why, said it came as a shock to learn that “period poverty” – where girls and women can’t afford to buy essential sanitary products – was a reality for local youngsters. Jackie is now looking for a coordinator to expand the project in and around Hanham and Kingswood. Girls’ rights charity Plan International UK carried out research in 2017 that found one in 10 girls had been unable to afford sanitary products while 12 per cent had had to improvise sanitary wear because of the cost. The Red Box Project was launched in Portsmouth in the same year by three friends, who contacted schools to ask if they would like a constantly stocked box of sanitary products after reading about period poverty. Two years later, there are now 2,718 boxes stocked with free sanitary care around the

country, provided by 241 projects. Jackie, who works for an accountancy firm, launched the project in July last year, funding the first box herself before setting up collection points for donated items at shops and other locations around the town, and said the support she has received has been testament to the kindness within the community. She said: “Nationally, the Red Box Project has expanded massively and so quickly. It’s

sad that there’s the need in this country but great that people want to support the project and be involved.” Schools are given posters to display in bathrooms and in staff rooms to let pupils and staff know the boxes are available, with some going a step further and even giving assemblies on the issue, Jackie said. Hanham's 'first couple' prepare for a well-earned rest THEY have given years of loyal service to the Hanham community, but John and Heather Goddard are finally stepping down from their councillor roles. The husband and wife, who have lived in the area for 55 years, will retire from South Gloucestershire Council at the May elections. John, who was born in Wellington, Somerset, was first elected to South Glos in 2003 and has also served for 25 years on Hanham Abbots Parish Council, including several years as chair, and on Hanham Parish Council since 2007. “My family had always been interested in politics and I'd been a Young Conservative from about the age of seven. I love the cut and thrust of politics and being able to help other people.” John, who will also step down from his parish council roles, said: “I'm 80 this year and another four years would have made me 84 and I thought I may not be as efficient then as I had been up to now!” John is a trustee of Samuel White's Education Trust and was a founder governor at Hanham High School, now Hanham Woods Academy, a role he did for 35 years, with a chair post for 13 of those. John, a former national salesman for electronic

equipment, lists one of his greatest achievements as establishing a sports hall for Hanham High as well as getting an old school canteen there transformed into a scout hut. “There wasn't a sports facility in Hanham that the community could use until then,” John said. “The lows have been in recent years with the cuts in local government. Unfortunately South Glos has had to make reductions in services and that hasn't gone down well. It's frustrating.” John, who held a position as cabinet member for resources until a year ago, said he was looking to fill his time with voluntary work, particularly with community organisation Southern Brooks, as well as concentrating on hobbies such as photography, touring and water colouring painting. “I love the community that we've grown with. Every time you walk down the street you see someone you know or someone you've tried to help.” Exeter-born Heather, 76, has been a councillor for the Hanham ward since 2003. She has held the cabinet post for communities as well as previously serving for two years as cabinet member for strategic partnerships, European affairs and external affairs. Before that Heather served

John and Heather Goddard pictured at a recent dinner at Hanham's Zest restaurant, where they were taken courtesy of Hanham Abbots Parish Council and Hanham Parish Council on Kingswood District Council, which then became a borough council, for 17 years. “I was first elected in 1979 – the year when Margaret Thatcher became prime minister,” said Heather. “She was quite an inspiration for women entering in politics. When I went on to Kingswood there were only five women and now about 40 per cent of councillors are women. “I was the first and only woman chairman of Kingswood from 1986-7 and met so many people doing inspirational things in their communities.” She has also served on Hanham Abbots Parish Council for 17 years and on Hanham Parish Council for 12 years. “I became involved in politics because I like people and find them interesting. It was also an

opportunity to help people.” Heather, a former secondary school teacher of domestic science, served as a governor on three Hanham schools, including Hanham Abbots Junior School for more than 25 years, with 10 of those as chair of governors. She was chair of Whitfield Preservation Trust from 1996 to 2008 and appeared on the TV programme Restoration to try to save the Grade I listed Whitfield Tabernacle in Kingswood. The couple have a son and a grandson. Heather said the best thing about her councillor role was meeting people. “I will miss the local people. They are very warm. I like to be able to help people and it's very rewarding when you are able to do so. They are very appreciative for what you can do for them.”

n NEWS THE owner of an eyesore building in Kingswood which had been left to decay so badly it became a refuge to hundreds of pigeons has been told to clean up his act. The old pharmacy building on the corner of High Street and Park Road has gone to rack and ruin despite its owner getting planning permission to turn it four homes, two flats and a shop back in 2016. Since then the building has “deteriorated significantly” according to South Gloucestershire Council which has taken action against the owner, Harminder Chana. It was in such a bad state of disrepair that birds were able to fly in and out, using it as a giant pigeon loft. Although the windows have recently been closed, there is no obvious sign of work being carried out to improve the appearance of the building. On January 9, South Gloucestershire Council issued a Section 215 notice on Mr Chana, saying he needed to carry out a series of jobs to ensure

'Sort out this giant pigeon loft' The old pharmacy building on the corner of High St and Park Road the appearance of the building improved. This included repairing the stonework and rendering, replacing fascia boards, guttering and downpipes and repairing any damaged doors and shutters. Mr Chana has until April 9 to carry out the work. Failure to comply with the notice could lead to a prosecution. Residents have discussed the state of the building on social media. One person called for it to be demolished, saying it must be a health hazard due to

the amount of bird droppings in there. “The inside must be crawling with germs and rats,” he added. A council spokesman said: “We are engaged in two related projects focused on Kingswood Town Centre, and one of the primary challenges for these projects to address is untidy and vacant buildings. The former pharmacy is recognised as one of the most prominent examples of this challenge and officers across a number of council teams are working together to target the

best resources at this issue. “Despite being granted planning permission for redevelopment, the site has remained vacant and has deteriorated significantly since this permission was given. “Formal enforcement action has now been taken by our Planning Enforcement and Environmental Health teams and, pending compliance with the relevant notices, further action will be considered to ensure that the issues are addressed. “The Love our High Streets project is proposing to invest £3m in Kingswood and the council has recently engaged residents and community groups in a consultation exercise about local challenges and priorities. The issue of untidy and vacant premises has not surprisingly been raised throughout this and seeking a resolution to the threat of longstanding and prominent vacant property will be a priority for the next phase of the project.”

Let's encourage more voters

Fareshare link will benefit schools

DESPITE the number of people being registered to vote increasing in recent years, in Kingswood voter registration has actually declined. I think this is a very worrying trend that South Glos Council should do more to fix. How about council officers setting up monthly or even fortnightly voter registration days in libraries, community centres, villages halls, sixth forms, and even pubs!? Surely we want wide participation in the May local elections. Many people might not realise that the way we register has changed and every voter now has to register themselves at this site: https://www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote Unless we improve registration we can be sure that very many people are not being represented in our democracy and their voices are going unheard. I really hope anyone reading this will take a few minutes today and register to vote so they can have their say. Suzanne Williams

STUDENTS at SBL Academy can enjoy tasty treats and help less fortunate people at the same time thanks to a partnership. The Oldland Common school is part of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust (WMAT), which has joined FareShare South West, a charity that redistributes surplus food to community groups and charities. The link means that the school can now offer a discounted breakfast club for all students. The partnership will reduce the schools’ food bill and any profits from the scheme will go back to FareShare to support the charity’s work with nearly 200 organisations in the region. Students pay £1 a day for up to three breakfast items, which vary according to the stock available. The school uses a cashless system and there is no

charge for those who qualify for pupil premium, including those eligible for free school meals. Zest, the catering arm of WMAT, receives 75kgs of food each week from FareShare, including luxury items as well as day-to-day fare. SBL and Wellsway are the first secondaries to join FareShare. WMAT primaries are also set to benefit - Zest plans to provide parcels for families in need from the supplies, as well as organising events to raise funds and awareness of food poverty, holiday hunger and tackling waste. Dean Anderson, principal at SBL, said: “We are really pleased to be working with FareShare. It is a great opportunity for all students to have access to a healthy breakfast for free or at a very small cost.”

A CAMPAIGN to raise £90,000 for leukaemia sufferer Lee Belgium is continuing. The family hope to take Lee, eight, a pupil at Park Primary in Kingswood, abroad for treatement. A charity football match at Ashton Gate Stadium is planned for Thursday May 9, and a team from Marston’s Pubs and Bars will cycle from Banks Brewery in Wolverhampton to Thornbury on Tuesday May 21, with a target of raising £10,000. Big funds boost for open spaces Celebrating in style TOTS love a good party – and what better excuse to bring out the cake than a good Ofsted report?T The youngsters, from Christchurch Pre-School, joined family, staff and committee members to celebrate a recent report which said children were well behaved and were making good progress. The committee surprised guests with a huge handmade cake complete with edible crayons and the Ofsted logo. Katie Gingell, chair of the pre-school, said: “The children enjoyed a brilliant disco as well as lots of fun and games. “It was a time to have fun, reflect on everyone's hard work and thank the staff and our lovely pre-school families.”

OPEN spaces in Hanham and Kingswood are to benefit from almost £750,000 in developer funding. Among the areas to benefit from the redevelopment of the former Douglas Motorcycle Works site are Kingswood Park, which will get more than £275,000, and Magpie Bottom, £279,000. The Pettigrove Road/Court Road playing fields will reel in £27,626, with the Court Road play area, skate park and ball court getting £70,000. Hanham Mount, where Methodists John Wesley and George Whitfield preached in the open air will bag £11,000. Once construction of the 306 homes, nursing home and sheltered housing scheme on the site reaches certain milestones, funding will be released. Cllr June Bamford, who represents Hanham, said: “Our public open spaces are very important to us and it is fantastic this funding will be used to improve those areas in line with new development. I look forward to the first instalments being released and seeing what it can do for our communities in Hanham and Kingswood.” Cllrs John and Heather Goddard, who also represent Hanham, said: “As a World Methodist Heritage site, Hanham Mount is of significant historic importance to our area. We are particularly pleased that this funding will continue to maintain it having served as chair and secretary of the Friends of Hanham Mount for more than 20 years, until its dissolution last year.”

This little piggy said ... IT'S exhausting work being a parent – so have sympathy for black sow Diana, she has 10 little ones to look after. The rare breed Large Black, a popular attraction at Grimsbury Farm, gave birth to the piglets within days of the farm's Tamworth sow Camilla, who is now the proud mum of four boys and three girls. Maggie Hamblin, of the Friends of Grimsbury Farm, said: “We now have lots of black and ginger piglets in the long barn for you to meet.”

Locals toast micropub idea PLANS to turn an empty shop in Kingswood into a micropub have been welcomed by residents who say it's just what the area needs. An application has been made to South Gloucestershire Council to convert the former Life charity shop at 121 Regent Street. Micropubs aim to promote conversation by doing away with gaming and fruit machines, televisions, juke boxes and live music. They often sell cask ales and source local brews. Applicant Samuel Powell, for Lyons Den Micropub, says the pub would be staffed by one full-time employee and three part-timers. Proposed times of opening are Monday to Friday noon to 10.45pm, Saturday noon to 11pm and Sunday and Bank Holidays noon to 10.30pm, with the selling of alcohol stopping 30 minutes before closing. The proposal has received support with many people writing to the council to say they believe a micropub would be good news for the area. According to the Micropub and Microbrewery Association, there are 346 micropubs with several in Bristol, including Snuffy Jack's Ale House in Fishponds and Wooden Walls in Staple Hill. A decision is expected by April 5.

Oldland pensioner conned out of £50k A FINANCIAL adviser who abused his position to steal £50,000 from a disabled Oldland Common woman has been jailed. Michael Price, aged 73, of Peasedown St John, was given a three-year prison sentence at Bristol Crown Court after he was convicted of fraud. He stole the money from double amputee Eileen Chiswell, between 2013-2016, after she trusted him to manage her financial affairs. Ms Chiswell, who was aged 88, died before the investigation reached court. She had placed her confidence in the former financial adviser, trusting him with her bank cards on the pretext that he was helping and advising her but Price exploited her lack of mobility. Price began working as financial adviser to Eileen Chiswell, a widow, in 2013, dealing with her tax returns and managing her investments. When she went into hospital in 2015 she gave the financial adviser a debit card to withdraw money she needed. He did not return the card. She became suspicious when she noticed her bank balance was lower than expected, discovering a large number of cash withdrawals and transactions had been made without her knowledge and consent. The police were notified and commenced an investigation,

Michael Price which led to the arrest of Price and ultimately a first appearance at court in 2016. A confiscation hearing under the Proceeds of Act will take place later this year at Bristol Crown Court at a date to be confirmed. DS Marc Milliner of Avon and Somerset Police’s complex crime unit said: “The significant custodial sentence handed to a man in his 70s of previous good character reflects what a dim view the courts take on professionals who abuse their positions to exploit the vulnerable. “This case was particularly abhorrent as Price took advantage of the victim’s circumstances to feed his own greed. The victim was widowed, elderly and immobile through her disability. She trusted her financial adviser to act in her best interests but he betrayed that trust and confidence. ”

Jessie May's brother runs Bath Half RUNNERS have raised more than £5,000 for Kingswoodbased charity Jessie May after taking part in the Bath Half Marathon. Twelve supporters lined up in Bath for the 13.1 mile event on March 17 in support of the charity, whose nurses support local families caring for a terminally ill child. Among the runners was James Purrington, the brother of Jessica May. His parents, Chris and Philippa, set up the charity in 1994 in memory of their daughter who died from a genetic condition when she was just four-and-a-half months old. James, who was celebrating his 27th birthday on the same day, was cheered on by his mum and his girlfriend Cecelia who were taking part together in support of the charity. The Great British Bake Off semi-finalist Briony May also donned a purple Jessie May

running vest to boost funds. Jessie May spokeswoman Helen Mackie said: “The atmosphere was just amazing and it was a real pleasure to cheer on all our runners. “It was incredibly humbling to see our purple running vests in the sea of Bath Half participants and see all the wonderful people who were taking part for us. £5,000 is an astounding amount of money and we are amazed that donations are still coming in now via the runners’ various fundraising pages and pots.” James said: “It was an amazing and heart-warming experience seeing all the support for the Jessie May and charities in general. I am so grateful for the sponsorship all of the Jessie May runners managed to raise for such an amazing cause.” The half marathon returned after last year’s cancellation due to heavy snow; bringing together 15,000 runners to the starting

She came for books and got a bouquet! CHILDMINDER Donna Jarman received a nice surprise when she popped into Hanham Library recently. For Donna happened to be South Gloucestershire's 5,000th Open Access user and was presented with a bouquet of roses. Hanham is the latest South Gloucestershire library to offer residents Open Access technology which means services can be accessed seven days a week. The introduction of the system at Hanham also marked the fact that more than 5,000 people have now registered to use Open Access. Later this month Kingswood Library will complete its relocation into new space in the Civic Centre, which will also have the technology installed. When Kingswood joins the network, it will mean total opening hours will have increased from 498 hours per week in September 2017, to 957 per week, an increase of 90 per cent. Open Access library user Donna Jarman said: “To have access to computers and books seven days a week enables families to make full use of this valued, local community facility.” The cash-strapped authority wanted to introduce Open Access in a bid to balance the books. During a consultation, it faced opposition from residents and library users who feared loss of jobs and vandalism, however the council said evidence had shown

Donna receives a bouquet from Cllr Paul Hughes

Open Access had been a success in other parts of the country. Councillor Paul Hughes, the council's cabinet member for Communities and Tourism, said: “South Gloucestershire Council has a strong reputation, when faced with pressure on budgets and services, for being both innovative and ambitious. Open Access uses the latest technology to actually extend a council service, which so many people see as an important part of our communities. Our investment in

this technology means that we now have more libraries open for longer than ever before, delivering better value for money. “Libraries are the major community resource for access to reading, IT and bringing the community together. I am delighted that Hanham Library is now open to this community seven days a week.” For more information see www.southglos.gov.uk/ openaccess.

When is Hanham Library open? The library will be staffed from 10am-5.30pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and from 9.30am1pm on Saturday. Open Access hours run from 8am-7pm seven days a week.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Help spread word on knife crime RESIDENTIAL burglary, knife crime and the illegal supply of drugs have a devastating impact on our communities. I know local people continue to be very concerned about these crimes, as am I – especially with the ongoing national conversation about knife crime – and you want to be assured that the police are doing everything they can to tackle these issues. With the council tax bill coming through our letterboxes recently, you will have noticed an increase for policing. By increasing policing by £2 a month for the average band D household, the Constabulary will be intensifying their fight against serious violence and continue to make our communities safe. This investment means we can recruit an additional 100 new officers and launch a focused operation that will tackle burglary, knife crime and the supply of drugs as part of initiative called

Operation Remedy. I want local people to see and feel the difference in our Constabulary’s fight against crime, and we will be sending a loud and clear message to criminals that coming into our area to commit crime and exploit the vulnerable is not an option. Work to tackle knife crime and serious violence was intensified in mid-March as officers took part in Operation Sceptre, a week of action that aims to reduce the number of knives on our streets. The initiative incorporates several tactics including education of both young people and retailers, targeted patrols of hot spot areas, weapon sweeps and knife surrender bins. We need to remember that knives do not keep you safe; by carrying a knife you are putting yourself in much greater danger and are more likely to become involved in a violent situation. We must work alongside other agencies in health, local

government, the charitable sector and our communities to understand the reasons why young people are arming themselves. We need to make it clear it is never acceptable to carry a knife or a weapon. If you are worried that someone you know is carrying a knife but are nervous to talk to the police, you can contact Fearless (the Crimestoppers youth arm) anonymously and potentially help to save a life. Finally, we also supported child exploitation (CE) awareness day. Children and young people can be victims of sexual or criminal exploitation in return for money, drugs, the newest trainers or simply just affection. These children who are being exploited don’t think of themselves as victims; we need to be their voice, speak out on their behalf and raise awareness of the warning signs. Our frontline officers are working with hospitality businesses and taxis

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens so employees can spot and speak out about this form of abuse. The police, educators, healthcare professionals, charities and youth workers need to continue to work in partnership and be the ones who ask, ask again and keep asking so we can stop the exploitation of our children. If you suspect a child is being exploited, please let the police, local authority or a charity know and help us end the cycle of abuse.

No poo bag? You risk a fine PEOPLE caught walking a dog in Hanham without a poo bag will get a £100 fine. The penalty is part of new rules brought in by South Gloucestershire Council in a bid to prevent dog fouling in public spaces. The public space protection order (PSPO) will see dog walkers issued with a penalty of £100 if they do not clean up after their pet after it has defecated on public land. Crucially, the enforcement officer would not have to actually see the dog defecate. “The proposed PSPO provides powers for authorised officers to require dog walkers to show they have the means to clean up after their dog – the officer does not have to have actually witness the dog foul,” a council report said. “Many other local authorities have introduced this measure as part of their controls on dog fouling.” The fines would not apply to people who cannot clean up after their assistance dog because of their disability. Currently, dog walkers can be fined £50 if they have left their dog’s faeces on public land in urban areas. The new rules will apply to all public land within South Gloucestershire except forestry land. The new measures were agreed by cabinet member for communities, Cllr Paul Hughes,

on Thursday March 21. During public consultation, 94 per cent of respondents said the council should take enforcement action against people who fail to clean up after their dogs, 93 per cent supported the use of a fine, and 89 per cent supported enforcement on common land, according to the council report. Dog wardens received 196 complaints about dog fouling last year. Dog fouling on farm land can also affect the quality and safety of crops and the health of livestock. The rules will come into effect on July 1 and stay in place for three years.

Throwing litter from cars is outlawed MOTORISTS who throw litter from their cars will be targeted in the tough new measures brought in by the council. A penalty of £150 will be handed to drivers, reduced to £75 if paid within 28 days. The council is the first local authority outside London to introduce such a charge. Regulations last year gave councils the power to issue fines for littering from a car where the offence was recorded on CCTV. Now, draft guidance from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs suggests observations from enforcement officers and members of the public can also be used as evidence of the offence being committed on council land. The power to issue fines will be given to all parking enforcement officers, education and enforcement officers, the waste operations manager, and cleansing policy and strategy manager in street care. A council survey conducted last year revealed 38 per cent of South Glos residents believe litter and rubbish lying around is a “fairly big” or a “very big” issue.

Why get the chickenpox jab?

CHICKENPOX. A message on Facebook or parent group forum, letter from the nursery or school. A child with unexplained spots or confirmed diagnosis. What do you do? The NHS England ‘Help Us Help You‘ campaign says that Ellacombe Pharmacy is the ideal place to visit to manage this and other minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, stomach upset, skin conditions aches and pains alongside taking care of patients with long term conditions and preventing ill health. We can help with correctly diagnosing and managing common symptoms such as itch, loss of appetite and a high temperature.Importantly also the right medicines and treatments to use and avoid. So why vaccinate against chickenpox? Chickenpox commonly affects children, and it is especially worse in adults. Starts with red spots that

appear anywhere on the body. The spots fill with fluid that blisters and may burst. They might spread or stay in a small area. The spot cycle repeating itself. You can catch chickenpox by being in the same room as someone with it, contact with clothes or beddings. You can also catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before. Chickenpox is infectious from 2 days before the spots appear to until they have crusted over, usually 5 days after they first appeared. It takes 1 to 3 weeks from the time you were exposed to chickenpox for the spots to start appearing. You'll need to stay away from school, nursery or work until all the spots have crusted over. Usually, 5 days after spots first appear. Many airlines will also not allow you to fly with chickenpox Ellacombe Pharmacy offers private chickenpox vaccination at

a low cost for children and adults. You can still get vaccinated after coming in contact with someone who has chickenpox. Some useful tips include wearing loose clothes, cutting the child’s nails and putting socks on the child's hands at night to stop scratching. Do not be around pregnant women, newborn babies and people with a weakened immune system, as it can be dangerous for them. Anyone in these vulnerable groups that comes in contact with or has suspected spots including all adults with chickenpox should seek medical attention. The chickenpox jab at £65 per dose (Two doses required ) is one of the popular low-cost vaccinations, travel jabs and medicines including Meningitis B, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Rabies and antimalarial tablets all with a price match promise guarantee. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

AS the local MP, I have long been aware of local residents’ concerns about the Wraxall road roundabout on the Avon Ring Road, and along with local Councillors and campaigners, I have consistently raised these concerns and pushed for a solution to the issues of congestion and traffic jams residents have experienced for many years. That is why I am delighted that following our campaigns, a £6.9 million scheme to improve the roundabout is now being considered, with the planned changes expected to reduce delays and improve traffic flows at peak times, easing congestion and queues which are currently affecting local residents, drivers, as well as public transport users. As someone who has long pushed for such improvements, I am very pleased that work on this ambitious scheme is now underway as it will benefit local commuters and residents,

and is part of a package of improvements to our local transport infrastructure which will help reduce collision and improve traffic in our community. South Gloucestershire Council has recently launched a consultation seeking views on the proposed changes, and I hope residents and local drivers have had the chance to have their say on this key improvement scheme for our area. Recently I have also welcomed the news that the Council has committed £600,000 in funding to improving access to the Mangotsfield Sort-It Centre. This is another great success for our local area, and as the local MP I have regularly worked alongside local residents and Councillors to push for improvements, and presented a residents’ petition alongside Cllr Ian Adams, to highlight residents’ concerns about congestion and queues at the recycling centre. I am now delighted to hear about this investment, which

Will Writing & Estate Planning

will help address the traffic issues many in the area have experienced for years. This funding will help improve access to the recycling centre by creating a separate slip road to the site, reducing local traffic disruption. This funding will be welcomed by many residents who have raised the issue with me over the past few months, who will find the recycling site easier to use. National Gardening Week

M

ANY will know that nothing beats the taste of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in your own garden or allotment - or the satisfaction and the enjoyment you can get from doing it, so it’s understandable that the theme of this year’s National Gardening Week which runs from Monday 29 April – to Sunday 5 May and organised by the Royal Horticultural Society is Edible Britain. The RHS is calling on gardeners up and down the country to share their love and experiences of home-grown produce throughout the week with others and particularly the next generation of would-be gardeners. Edible Britain highlights that everyone has space to grow something delicious to eat, whether it’s a single pot of herbs on the windowsill or an allotment overflowing with courgettes, beans, peas, onions and potatoes to name just a few.

Slug pellets ban for home gardeners An announcement from DEFRA has banned slug pellets which contain metaldehyde from Spring 2020. The ban includes growers everywhere, whether on farms, allotments or garden use. The decision followed advice from the UK expert committee on Pesticides and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who considered that metaldehyde poses an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals. Whilst the ban on their use does not come into force until next year pellets containing the chemical will be illegal for sale from this June. The alternative will be pellets containing ferric phosphate which are approved for use by organic growers and degrade harmlessly in the soil and provide effective control of slugs and snails without carrying the same risks to wildlife. However, these pellets also contain chemicals which can be harmful to soil life particularly earthworms and advice is to use them sparingly, only 4 or 5 pellets per plant, and only occasionally. Metaldehyde causes the gastropods more commonly known as slugs and snails to dehydrate leaving the trails of slime and dead bodies on the surface which can be eaten by birds and mammals which in turn is also poisonous to them. Ferrous phosphate stops the slug eating so it goes back underground to die.

Unfortunately, alternative organic home slug control methods have found them to be not as effective as hoped. Tests with copper tape, horticultural grit, pine bark mulch, wool pellets and egg shells have all shown to make no difference when applied to lettuce, with gastropods inflicting the same damage to those treated with the remedies as without.

Time to feed daffodils Daffodils are always a welcome sight particularly in mid-winter when it seems everything in the garden is at virtual standstill, but now and over the next few weeks is the time they need a little TLC to ensure another beautiful display next year. Inevitably, the flowers will soon begin to fade and it’s best to remove the waning heads to conserve energy in the bulb, it’s also the time when the bulb is setting the bud for next year’s flower. Water the bulbs if planted in containers for the next six weeks to ensure they do not dry out and apply a high potassium feed such as tomato fertilizer. Allow the leaves to die naturally; no need to tie them up as this prevents them feeding the bulb and when completely yellowed stop watering, cutting them back from June onwards.

These borders focus on the theme of health and wellbeing and will be packed full of planting ideas that will inspire you to recreate your own borders at home. The Green Living Spaces will showcase how to use plants indoors and out to great effect with ideas particularly for small spaces. Four show gardens will each consist of an interior living space connected to an outdoor balcony or patio garden, with garden and interior designers collaborating to create a joint installation. And even if flower arranging is not your forte, set aside time to visit the floral art hall to watch top international arranger Jonathan Moseley who will be on hand with his entertaining and enjoyable demonstrations. You’ll be glad you did. We would like to invite you to join us on our coach to visit the Show; our journey begins from the Kingsway shopping precinct at 8.00am on Saturday 11th May and travels directly to the showground, just over an hour away. The coach park is conveniently situated with easy access and a short walk to everything the show offers. Disabled toilet facilities are located throughout the showground also all buildings, catering and seating areas are accessible. Our tickets include entry to the show and coach travel; you’ll have a great day out with so much to tempt you. Please call our Secretary on the number below if you would like more information.

Our visit to Malvern Show Spring Show Saturday May 11 We’ve noticed that the Malvern Spring Show organised by the Royal Horticultural Society gets better each year. It’s packed with floral displays and exhibits from a vast range of top quality nurserymen all of whom will offer friendly advice. New for 2019 will be a specialist house plant feature located within the Floral Marquee. Also at the show you’ll find a raised beds category called Planted with Passion.

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Evening WI IT'S good night from him ... That could easily have been the title of the talk given by Andrew Stowe to our March meeting. Andrew is from East Bristol Auctions and talked to us about his great passion in life – the Two Ronnies. He told us about his recent experiences when he was asked to auction off some memorabilia from that wonderful and award-winning comedy duo. As a self-confessed Two Ronnies enthusiast he was especially pleased to have been asked to take on this task. The items he auctioned included the script from their famous “four candles” sketch and a pair of Ronnie Barker’s glasses. He told us how, in the lead up to the auction, he was in great demand from both local and national television and radio stations to give interviews. Andrew confessed that he was not always as keen as he is now and well remembers watching the comedy show Porridge, which starred Ronnie Barker, with his father and couldn’t stand it! But

since those days he has studied and researched the pair and even conducted interviews with people living near locations where episodes of their programmes were made. He was privileged to attend Ronnie Corbertt’s memorial service where he found himself sitting next to Stephen Fry. On the altar during the service stood.…yes you’ve guessed it….four candles. Andrew took several questions from members where his enthusiasm for his subject was evident. All members agreed that was a thoroughly entertaining evening. And it's good night from me… Dianna Coles

Longwell Green WI MEMBERS enjoyed an extremely interesting talk about the RNLI at our March meeting. Gary Bressington gave us lots of interesting facts and information about the service that many of us were unaware of. We all knew of the huge service the RNLI makes to save lives at sea but it came

as a surprise to know that they also are responsible for the beach lifeguards who patrol our beaches in the summer months; are involved in flood rescue and now have two permanent boats on the Thames. The boats on the Thames are the busiest in the country and can launch in 90 seconds. They are hoping to start to roll out this initiative to other waterways in the British Isles. They are responsible for the Respect The Water campaign which aims to stop drowning by educating about the dangers of waterways. There will not be a meeting in April because of Easter but our birthday party is in April and May’s meeting will be our resolutions and social evening when we decide which resolution we will ask the WI to take forward for this year’s campaign. Upcoming events include a visit to Knightshayes and a tour around Oxford. During April we will be joining the Great British Spring Clean and litter picking around the local area. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at

Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782.

Mangotsfield WI OUR thanks to Emma Britton from BBC Radio Bristol who came to talk to us in March. She did a talk on ‘My Somewhat Unusual Journey Into Broadcasting’. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to her stories and sharing her journey and would highly recommend her for our WI sisters. Our next meeting is on April 15 when we will be welcoming Amy Wheeler from Dotty Herberts. Amy will be demonstrating how to make a twig decoration using an empty can. You can contact us at mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com or find out more at www.mangotsfieldwi. org.uk or Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Mangotsfield/ Kate Tarr

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

The happiest carers in Bristol LATE 2013 - Pharrell Williams was in the charts with ‘Happy’ and everything was slotting into place for Your Care to be officially launched by founder Tina Westlake in February 2014. Right from the start, Tina chose not to use zero hours contracts; making this one of the stand-out differentiators between Your Care and other home care agencies. “It’s not a fair way to treat a carer,” says Tina adamantly. “Our carers are contracted for a set number of hours each month. This means they can guarantee an income, which means they can budget and apply for a mortgage.” Clearly, Your Care values its team as well as its clients. It recruits each carer according to the requirements of clients and even looks to match hobbies and interests so as to create the perfect fit. This ensures Your Care can provide the best possible personable care, whilst building a meaningful relationship between the carer and the client. “Your Care works with families, for the clients. As well as working with the elderly, disabled, sensory-impaired and those with

learning difficulties, we support people with dementia and their families, too,” Tina adds. “The important thing for us is that our carers are happy. Because when the team is happy, so are our clients.”

As Pharrell Williams sang, ‘clap along if you know what happiness is to you’, and contact Your Care if you’re considering getting help with care from an outstanding agency, or know someone who should.

At Your Care, we believe that the right care assistant really makes a difference. Here’s how we can support you: Helping with the housework Going out for the day Assisting with social events/appointments Your personal care ‘I’d be lost without Your Care’

“My personal assistants are kind, patient and encouraging, I would not be able to leave my flat without their help.” Rachel Wicks

Whenever you need us, we’ll be there and will put your requirements first.

n NEWS n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR 2019 programme began on March 5 with a talk about the many famous men and women buried in Arnos Vale Cemetery. Carla Contractor the renowned historian, educationalist and trustee of the cemetery told us it was established in 1837 and is laid out over 45 acres in the style of a Greek Necropolis with an Arcadian landscape . The first burial was in 1839 and it soon became the most fashionable place to be buried in Bristol. Over 300,000 deceased Bristolians are commemorated, amongst them many Lords Mayor of the city, eminent medical doctors, scientists, business entrepreneurs, social reformers, war heroes - holders of the Victoria Cross. Among them are the Wills family dynasty, Raja Ram Mohan Roy the Indian social reformer whose magnificent mausoleum was

Museum's new season KINGSWOOD Heritage Museum is gearing up for its new season, starting in April. Volunteers have been at work for weeks, creating new exhibits for 2019 and refurbishing last year's displays, as well as improving access to the museum itself. There are two new major exhibits for 2019. The first is a display created by Kingswood District Scouts, including photos of the activities of many of the local troops over the years. The other is entitled “Spotlight on Bitton and Oldland”, with pictures covering the development of the area through the twentieth century. The museum will open on April 2, and then on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until November 28 from 2-5pm, and on Bank Holidays 11am-5pm.
