Gym campaign gathers pace NEARLY 800 residents have objected to a planning application that would force the closure of Majestic Gymnastic Academy. More than 1,000 children a week use the facility, which has been operating from its site on Longwell Green trading estate for the past seven years. But plans to redevelop the

site don’t include a home for the specialist gymnastics building, refurbished with £50,000 funding from Sport England, despite initial promises to the contrary from the developer. The plans from West Midland Authority Pension Fund propose replacing most of the warehousestyle buildings alongside Aldermoor Way and Marsham

Way. They would be replaced with work space, retail or leisure outlets that could include a drive-through restaurant or a hotel. Up to 440 new jobs could be created and between 250 and 350 parking spaces added. Many of the written objections from the public include comments about extra Turn to Page 2

Flood of support From Page 1 traffic that the development could bring. Emma Hinton wrote: “The extra traffic associated with this development is extremely concerning. The roads already cannot cope with the traffic trying to get to the supermarkets and other shops around that area. To add to this is just madness!” Beth Phillips wrote: “This area already suffers from severe congestion, particularly Aldermoor Way and the roundabout. Vehicles emerging from the site onto Aldermoor Way must creep out and I have witnessed and been subject to a number of near misses.” Other objections are due to the potential loss of the Majestic building, whose lease is due to run out this September. Nick Collins wrote: “As the proud parent of Majestic Gymnastics’ first ever GB athlete in 2016 I can’t believe that this proposal will be allowed to go ahead in its current form! Children thrive at this club and this is testament to the hard work and input of the owners, coaches, athletes and parents that have helped turned this gymnastics club into a valid key part of the local community.” However, a few people have written to South Glos council in support of the development. Peter Price-Higgott wrote: “Great redevelopment for the local area. It will bring job opportunities for local construction and local jobs

for the incoming businesses thereafter.” Majestic owners Michelle George and Candice Fry have collected more than 2,000 signatures on a petition against demolishing their building and hired a planning specialist to object to the proposal on their behalf. The report from DLP Planning Ltd says booting out Majestic would contravene planning policy. It said: “Core Strategy Policy CS23 seeks to protect community facilities, including public and private sports and recreation facilities. Such uses are to be retained unless it can be demonstrated that those uses have ceased, and there is no longer a demand, the facility is no longer fit for purpose, and suitable alternative provision may be made with easy walking distance. “None of these conditions is met by the current application. “Early discussions with the applicants had included proposals to relocate Majestic Gymnastics Academy CIC within the new development, and it remains their wish to work with the applicants to deliver a proposal that allow them to continue to operate on this site, in reach of the gymnasts who already benefit from this facility.” Michelle and Candice, who met as child gymnasts and have been friends ever since, attended a planning committee meeting for Oldland Parish Council to discuss the planning application. for threatened gymnasts Michelle, 40, said: “We do not want the redevelopment to not happen necessarily. We think it’s a great opportunity for South Glos to have really nice area down here, which obviously it hasn’t got at the moment, but it’s just about us not being the casualty of that.” She said they employ seven full-time staff, nine part-time staff and 15 youth leaders at the site, who would all lose their jobs if it is forced to close. Candice, 35, said: “We want to secure the future of the club. We want to be assured that we can survive and have a long-term lease so that we can guarantee to our members and our athletes that they will have a space to train in their local area.” She said the next closest club that offers TeamGym, the discipline Majestic specialises in, is nearly 100 miles away in Bracknell. Cllr John Parker, chairing

the meeting, said that the council had input into the South Glos local plan consultation expressing support to redevelop the site for employment and community activities. He said: “This position is entirely consistent and fully supportive of the overwhelming community view that Majestic Gymnastics, and indeed any other community group or service provider, should not be disadvantaged or their future threatened by this redevelopment. “Oldland Parish Council has supported Majestic since its inception and will continue to do so by offering our support to find a sustainable solution that gives Majestic the opportunity to not just survive but to grow and develop. I think we’re definitely on the same page.” Like residents, the parish council expressed concerns about traffic.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

Cllr Bruce Ryland said: “Traffic’s chaos as it is. On that roundabout by Asda on a Saturday afternoon they’re queuing almost back up onto the ring road. If you add extra things attracting people in there it’d be gridlocked, it’d be chaos.” Mitigation suggestions included a one-way system through the retail park, more buses, an extra exit nearer the ring road, or introducing pedestrian bridges so traffic flow isn’t slowed. Cllr Martin Farmer said residents of Craven Way had already been in touch to complain how much traffic goes through their residential roads to avoid the traffic jams at Marsham Way roundabout, and that this could increase if the trading estate is redeveloped. He said: “On the flip side, I think the creation of 400 jobs is fantastic and the report talks about £30 million of investment

with additional economic spillover into the local economy.” Cllr Richard Pope said: “We don’t want that site left empty. We want something on that site and regardless there will be more traffic, so we have to try and monitor the routes of the traffic, not stop people building because it’s going to increase traffic.” As well as Majestic Gymnastics, the neighbouring Flip Out inflatable play arena will also be removed under the plans, taking away two of the main places for local children to exercise indoors. Flip Out’s owners are currently in discussions about what will happen to the Bristol branch.

Fancy-dress astronaut runs to the moon A KINGSWOOD dad is running the distance to the moon and back dressed as an astronaut to raise money for charities whose work helped save his and his son’s life. Merv Lawrence, 38, has assembled a team of nearly 100 Moontrekker participants to help him achieve the mileage between now and August by running, walking or cycling. Many of the other fundraisers are dressing up to run too – including as Woody, Rex and Mr Potato Head from Toy Story – to bring a smile to youngsters on the streets of Kingswood and beyond as they clock up their miles. Merv, a builder, said: “The idea was inspired by my wife, Beccy. When she puts the kids to bed she always says, ‘I love you to the moon and back.’” While home schooling his older sons, Charlie, nine, and Lenny, seven, while Beacon Rise primary school was closed in the most recent lockdown, he got them to work out exactly how far that would be. He said: “The real distance to the moon and back is 477,710 miles which is a bit more than I can sensibly manage. But I thought if I make one mile on Earth the equivalent of 50 miles in space, then it’s still a big, but doable, challenge.”

Merv Lawrence Despite not running regularly before, he plans to run at least 2,000 of the 9,554 miles himself, all while wearing his spacesuit. He is even building himself a ‘rocket bike’ to keep the theme going when he is out cycling. Merv hopes to raise in excess of £10,000, to split between four charities close to his heart. He has chosen the British Heart Foundation because youngest son Teddy, two, was born at Southmead Hospital with a lifethreatening heart condition. Teddy has endured open heart surgery, has to be fed by tube and suffers breathing and sleeping difficulties. He is due more

surgery at Bristol Children’s Hospital this year and will continue needing surgery until he is six. The Aplastic Anaemia Trust has also been important in Merv’s life, after he developed the rare life-threatening auto-immune disease 15 years ago. He was diagnosed while serving in the Army and told he had just nine months to live without bone marrow transplant. Luckily a donor was found within six months and the surgery was successful. Merv was medically discharged from the army, married Beccy, who is now 37, and started a family. Another quarter of the funds raised will go to Clevedon-based youth engagement charity the Jack Hazeldine Foundation. The final charity that will benefit is the neonatal and stillbirth charity Sands, because of the time that Teddy spent in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit when he was born. Merv also has bereaved friends who have been supported by the charity. Merv, who has lived in Kingswood for the past seven years, said: “My family and I have had so much good fortune, so this is my way of giving back." Family's campaign over vital drug is raised in Parliament A FAMILY'S battle for access to treatment for phenylketonuria (PKU) has been raised in Parliament. Leanne and Peter Barnett, from Kingswood, want the drug Kuvan to be made available on the NHS. They say it could help their daughters Olivia and Ruby, who are now three years old, to live more normal lives. The family say they have been told the drug is not funded because it is too expensive - it could cost £50,000 a year for each girl. The condition means the children cannot process protein properly so have to stick to a strict diet. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore raised the family's case in a Westminster Hall

debate on rare diseases and the implementation of the UK Rare Diseases Framework. In the debate, which took place on March 24, Mr Skidmore outlined how, although licensed in 2008 to treat PKU, Kuvan has only been available to patients in the UK in very limited circumstances. The MP, who is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on PKU, has raised Leanne’s concerns with Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Care and has written to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock to support the campaign to increase access and availability of treatment such as Kuvan for patients and families in the UK.

Leanne and Peter and the twins in 2019

Mr Skidmore told the debate: “For anyone who is a parent of young children, babies or toddlers, managing any diet is challenging, but managing a diet with low protein is extremely difficult. Everyday life becomes filled with anxiety, putting incredible strain upon the parents, who know that one mistake might cost the child their life or lead to brain damage”. Chris continued: “This

E-scooters make it to Hanham A TRIAL of rental e-scooters has finally been extended to the Hanham area. The ‘hop-on hop-off’ green travel scheme was launched in central Bristol and Bath last October. Use of the scooters is free to to NHS workers and there are discounts for students and those on low incomes. For everyone else, e-scooters are available to unlock for £0.99 and cost 14p per minute. New areas in the trial include, Hanham, Kingswood, Hillfields, St George, Mangotsfield, Downend and Staple Hill. Since the West of England launch, there have been over 225,000 rides taken and almost 615,000 miles travelled. Councillor Steve Reade, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure, said: “The continued expansion of

5

the e-scooter trial is enabling more people to consider greener travel options, especially as schools and businesses begin reopen. If we are to achieve our Climate Emergency goals, we all need to look for low-carbon alternatives, especially for those local journeys.” To unlock an e-scooter, riders can download the Voi app. They must be 18 years old or over and have a valid UK driving licence (full or provisional). Users are encouraged to wear cycle helmets. Only e-scooters hired or leased through the trial can be used legally on roads, cycle lanes or cycle tracks. Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, parks and any other areas.

dietary treatment can also be incredibly costly for families, particularly if they are on a low income, which is a real barrier”. The MP also raised recent concerns about a recent proposal recommending the use of Kuvan for children up to the age of 18 only. He said: “This is a lifelong condition and therefore we need lifelong treatment of Kuvan on the NHS."

The joy of reading

LOCKDOWN didn’t stop children at St Barnabas Primary School celebrating World Book Day. Whether they were learning at home or at school in North Common, children dressed up as their favourite book characters. To add to the fun, for their English work that day they had to pretend they were writing as their new persona. The dressing up was the culmination of a

week of book-themed activities. Pupils also took part in a daily ‘masked reader’ contest, in the style of TV show The Masked Singer, where they had to guess who was reading the story. Deputy head Sally Cornelius said: “It was amazing to see all the hard work that had gone into the costumes, both at home and in school. Our favourite literary characters were brought to life and it felt like we had been

absorbed into the middle of a book. “It goes without saying that we took the time to relax with a story and read for pleasure. The children got to choose whatever text they wanted to read, from comics to classics and audio books to blogs. It was all about reading for fun.” The children also completed creative writing and art for a creative arts competition organised by Bitton Parish Council.

Engineers of future BUDDING engineers have spent a week inventing solutions for problems to celebrate British Science Week. Every child from nursery age up to year six at St Barnabas primary school in Warmley became an engineer for the week and entered the National Leaders Award competition. Each mini engineer had to identify a problem then create a design for an invention to solve it. Ideas ranged from self-writing pens to litter machines that help the environment. Deputy headteacher Sally Cornelius said: “We are extremely proud of the inventions the children created as many of them had the theme of helping others. “The excitement and squeals of enthusiasm echoed through the corridors of St Barnabas all week, with many children saying it was the best week ever.”

TWO schools in Hanham were among 24 in South Gloucestershire that had their computer networks disabled by hackers. The “targeted ransomware attack”, where malicious software is installed on a system to block access until a ransom is paid, took down IT systems at schools on March 16. Most were still experiencing problems a week later. The schools affected included seven in Castle School Education Trust and 17 run by South Gloucestershire Council. Among these were Samuel White’s Infant School and Hanham Abbots Junior School. A joint statement from CSET and the council said: “This was a highly sophisticated attack, which breached multiple layers of protection of the IT system shared by schools in Castle School Education Trust and

Rock on! Get set for an Easter egg hunt

KEEP your eyes peeled for painted stones around the streets on Hanham on Easter Saturday and you could win a prize. The stones, representing Easter eggs, have been painted by pupils at Christ Church Hanham primary school. Well over 300 stones will be hidden all over Hanham, including in public green spaces and on walls and pavements. Anyone finding one can bring it along to Christ Church (the church, not the school) on Church Road between 10am and 4pm that day to claim an Easter goodie bag.

The painted stones include two eggstraspecial gold ones: the finders of these stones will receive a special prize. Headteacher Neil McKellar-Turner said it was a superb opportunity for the children. He said: “We are really keen to ensure that our children play an active role in their community. It is fantastic to work so closely with Reverend Steve and the church in order to bring some joy to families this Easter time.” Reverend Steve Dyson, vicar at Christ Church, said: “We really wanted to bless

our community and make sure that all the children and families of Hanham could enjoy the fun of an Easter egg hunt in a Covidsecure way. “That’s why the hunt is spread over the whole of Hanham: there’s plenty of space for everyone to join in. “I want to say a massive thank you to the school as we couldn’t have done this without their help. The children have beautifully hand painted every stone and they have put so much thought and creativity into each unique design.”

What do the Metro Mayor manifestos offer for Hanham & Longwell Green residents? View from Dan Norris, Labour Metro Mayor Candidate

Walking church FOR the second time, churches won’t be able to meet together to celebrate the greatest festival of the Christian year. But in Hanham there is a way that you can stop, reflect on the past year, and look forward to hope for the future. On Hanham Common between Good Friday afternoon and Easter Sunday afternoon Hanham Baptist Church is holding a “walking church”socially distanced trail. The Rev Peter Cook, from Hanham Baptist Church, said: ", You can follow the trail, as we journey through the tough times, and the pain, the joy and the hope that we have. So, whether you have a faith or not, why not come along and take time to pause, find peace and draw strength in the middle of these unprecedented times?" n POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER ELECTIONS Voters will have the chance in May to choose the next Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner. The PCC is responsible for the effective policing of the region, drawing up a budget – including the annual precept charged to council tax payers – setting priorities for the force through a police and crime plan and holding the chief constable and officers to account for delivering it. What are your top three priorities for policing in the Avon and Somerset force area? Kerry Barker: Successful policing depends upon the gathering of local intelligence by local police officers. My priorities are: to strengthen community policing with more officers who live and work in the areas for which they are responsible; stop the closure of police stations; bring back and strengthen specialist detective teams, such as burglary teams and sexual assault teams. Each will have the aim of improving the welfare and safety of women. Cleo Lake: Trust – the police need to reflect the communities they work for. This requires active recruitment among under-represented groups, and supporting recruits through challenges. Prevention – reform of drug laws, which create needless criminals and victims - is required. Focus should be on cybercrime, which denies many their savings, and road safety, including pavement parking. Despite budget pressures, the public deserve value-for-money policing and for their priorities to be met. Heather Shearer: Catch and prosecute burglars and scammers – currently only 8% of burglars are detected; Invest in responsive neighbourhood police teams so they can truly be part of their communities; Work more effectively with partner organisations across the county

Since its creation in 2012 the post has been held by independent Sue Mountstevens, who is standing down. The candidates are Kerry Barker, Labour; Cleo Lake, Green; Heather Shearer, Lib Dem; Mark Shelford, Conservative and John Smith, Independent. Here's a chance to find out more about them and what they would do if they got this role.

to target drugs and knife crime. Focusing on crime prevention and building safer communities would be my way to achieve these three things.

and motivate a uniformed service, and how to properly consult and engage with voters. Our police do a difficult job with courage and skill: they need leadership that understands their and the community’s needs.

Mark Shelford: Reassure residents the police are there for them: increase visible policing and work with communities to increase their resistant to crime; Refocus the police on fighting crimes people care about by freeing officers up from non-policing tasks; Rebuild morale on the frontline: overhaul training and cut paperwork to allow Police more time on our streets. Boost Special Constable numbers, review the use of police buildings, and investigate the efficiency of the current PCC office.

Cleo Lake

John Smith: As well as continuing current priorities such as road safety and anti-social behaviour, I will prioritise more areas that local people have told me need additional resources such as cyber crime and fraud, rural crime and business crime.

John Smith: As the only independent candidate, I will answer only to local residents, not to party politicians in Westminster. If elected, I will make keeping everyone safe and secure my main priority, and my first focus will be on: Supporting the police to enforce Covid-19 regulations appropriately so we can get back to living normally as soon as possible; Protecting the most vulnerable in society, including children and victims of domestic violence; Tackling burglary, knife and drug crime including County Lines.

How will your approach to the role differ from the current PCC’s? Mark Shelford: I know how to lead

Kerry Barker

Kerry Barker: I will change strategies to make local policing the priority; stop closures of police stations; emphasise the welfare and safety of women and move back to specialist teams of detectives. The soaring levels of violent and sexual offences are unacceptable. Cleo Lake: I would be highly visible. I would like to work more closely with unions and Independent Advisory Groups to inform from a community perspective. I would support setting up both a youth and African Heritage IAG. Heather Shearer: I would ask difficult questions of the Constabulary and partners but also build effective working relationships. My decisions would be evidence-based but you have to take people with you, especially when the decisions are not what everyone wants to hear.

n NEWS

Fears over Covid-19 vaccine allayed EVERYONE over 50 in South Gloucestershire and all younger people with a particular health risk should have been offered their coronavirus jabs by the end of this month. Councillors have been told that the programme in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire is booking up to 1,200 vaccinations a day. Around a third of all adults in the region have received their first dose of a Covid vaccine, and some have received their second dose, Claire Thompson, from the area's Clinical Commissioning Group told a health scrutiny committee meeting. Doses for younger people have been 'paused' until May to ensure there are enough vaccine supplies for older people to have their second doses. Ms Thompson confirmed that some people had cancelled their jabs based on misplaced fears of blood clots with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is “safe and effective” and not linked to a higher risk of developing blood clots. She said staff were explaining to people who were worried that: “Any risk from receiving the vaccine is far outweighed by the

benefit of the immunity it provides.” South Gloucestershire’s director of public health, Sara Blackmore, told the committee: “In terms of information that is available to us, the number of clots occurring doesn’t exceed what you’d expect to see in the general population anyway. “There’s no evidence showing any link between the vaccine and clots.” The scare followed a small number of reports from Europe that people who had received the vaccine had developed blood clots a few days afterwards. But blood clots occur for a variety of reasons, and there is no evidence that the vaccine raises the risk. Blood clots happen in around one in 1,000 people in the population every year. The success of the vaccine rollout has meant that it is looking likely that the Prime Minister's 'roadmap' in which many more businesses can open up from April 12 will be fulfilled. Further restrictions are due to be lifted on May 17 and June 21, provided that case rates remain low. Some areas saw a slight rise in positive tests in late March, following the return of almost all children and staff to schools on

March 8. In the week to March 26, there were 109 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in South Gloucestershire, down 14 per cent on the week before. The rate of cases per 100,000 was 38.2. In Hanham, there were five cases in the week to March 20 (54.2 per 100,000) while in Longwell Green and Oldland Common there were eight (79.9). Parents with children at nursery, school or college are advised to carry out tests at home twice a week. Free rapid flow tests can be ordered online or collected from sites including Kingswood Leisure Centre and Cleve Rugby Club. Further information can be found on the South Gloucestershire Council website. The council says that rapid testing is available to those without Covid-19 symptoms only. Anyone who developx any of the main symptoms of Covid-19: a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; and/or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste, should book a PCR test online or by calling 119.

n METRO MAYOR ELECTIONS In May voters in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and B&NES get to choose their next Metro Mayor. The boss of the West of England Combined Authority, or WECA, is in charge of coordinating the region’s transport, housing jobs and skills policy and will oversee the spending of more than £1.1 billion over the next 30 years. The first Metro Mayor, Conservative Tim Bowles, is standing down and, while nominations were still open as the Voice went to print, the main political parties had already announced their contenders for the post. 1) What are the three biggest issues facing the region? Dan Norris: Jobs, climate change and housing. The pandemic has exacerbated the need for effective leadership. It’s not good enough to have money to support our High

Our region is full of opportunity; as we recover from the impacts of Covid, following the tremendous vaccine roll-out, I will connect all communities across the West of England with the opportunity to secure our future progress. Technology Excellence and using the skills budget to make sure everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Second, putting more oomph and vigour behind plans to revolutionise our bus and train networks and to enable safe cycling. Third, a plan to build socially balanced new communities with climate-friendly homes.

Stephen Williams: I have a detailed manifesto for transformative change in the West of England, on my website at www. stephenwilliams.org.uk. I would run through my top priorities with all the staff of the regional authority, setting out milestones for action.

Jerome Thomas: Obviously our recovery after Covid – we need to support communities and businesses to rebuild and adapt, ensuring that we are creating jobs that have a future. To protect the climate, we need to build homes in places with good local services and transport links which allow people to get around quickly without needing to use their cars. And for our well-being as well as the environment, we must protect and improve our green spaces and wildlife areas.

Jerome Thomas: I would meet with local town and parish councils to hear what their priorities are and how we could work together to improve the quality of life in their neighbourhoods. Dan Norris: I’ll be a jobs-first mayor, holding a jobs summit in my first 100 days in office and launching my Green Recovery Plan. I’ll set out plans to double investment in affordable housing, shifting resources to support councils and housing associations.

2) If you win the election, what would your first action be?

3) What prior experience do you believe qualifies you for the job?

Samuel Williams: It is vital that the Winter Voicewith ad.qxp_Layout 18/03/2021 17:17 Page 1 Mayor works Government1not Stephen Williams: To be against it. Once in post, I’ll pick up successful, this major role needs

a Mayor with deep knowledge of both business and government. I was a small business consultant before becoming a Bristol MP and then Minister for housing and local government. Jerome Thomas: I’ve had a long career in business and been a city councillor for six years. I’ve lived in this region most of my life. Above all, I know how to create a realistic plan bringing people together, whatever their politics. Dan Norris: I’ve lived and worked locally all my life as an NSPCC trained child protection officer, an MP and Environment Minister, and I’ve run my own businesses. I’ve got a record of securing jobs and investment. I’m a children’s charity trustee. Samuel Williams: As an international business and charity leader, this is the chance to recover with a Mayor who embodies the future, who connects opportunities and is committed to business minded and community hearted leadership, not the time for old solutions.

A HAPPY RETIREMENT IS JUST ROUND THE CORNER

13 4) How would you raise the profile of the Metro Mayor and WECA? Jerome Thomas: First, I want to do a good job for the region and deliver a solid plan with communities at its heart. Second, I will stand up for the West of England and secure more funds and local control of services. Dan Norris: I’ll be a visible, active mayor holding regular Town Hall meetings. I’ll win more funding and push for more powers for our region. With strong leadership, I’ll ensure the West of England is a key part of the national conversation. Samuel Williams: Having led an organisation that works with some of the world’s biggest brands, I know how to grow our profile. With Conservatives at the top levels of Government I am well connected, with a region full of talent. Stephen Williams: I’d stage a Meet the Mayor roadshow around all the region’s towns and villages and in the distinct communities of Bath and Bristol. I would use my experience to deliver my ambitious plans and win great deals from Westminster.

n AROUND THE WIs

GROUPS organising events in the Hanham and Longwell Green areas are invited to tell readers about them. Our popular What's On section was suspended at the start of the lockdown, as community events and meetings were cancelled indefinitely. Now some groups are planning events again, we offer free space to publicise non profit-making activities once more. Clubs, charities and societies can send details of events to the Voice by email at news@hanhamandlongwellgreenvoice.co.uk. Businesses staging profit-making events and paid-for classes in the area can advertise in the What's On section for a small charge every month, by contacting sales@hanhamandlongwellgreenvoice.co.uk. Because of the many changes to venues, groups and clubs since March 2020, regular entries that appeared before lockdown will not automatically be reused in the What's On section so any information should be re-sent to one of the addresses above. LONGWELL GREEN WI During the past year Longwell Green WI have been committed to keeping in touch with our members. This has been achieved by telephone calls, use of a WhatsApp group, email, snail mail, Facebook and, recently, via Zoom. We now have various Zoom meetings throughout the month. Every Wednesday we have a Tea and Chat session which people can just drop into and connect with others. This has proved to be a lifeline for some members who have been, and still are, shielding so are unable to even go to the shops. Once a month we have what is known as Wine & Nibbles but is really a games evening which is well attended and can be hilarious! We have played various different versions of Bingo – the funniest being Handbag Bingo. We also play Scattergories and have assorted quizzes. Our various sub-groups also have regular meet-ups via Zoom. Since November, we have been having our usual monthly meeting this way with a variety of different speakers. We have heard all about Dogs for Good and this month were entertained by the Taxi Driver Poet, James Haddow. He started writing poems over 20 years ago and many are inspired by the fares and experiences he had in his cab. He is no longer able to drive his cab so devotes more time to writing poetry. We delivered Christmas cards to all our members, along with a packet of wildflower seeds, and in February each member had a heart knitted by the members of the knitting group to ‘share the love’. In more normal times, our members can participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30 and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail. com or telephone 0117 9864782. Sandra Hill

Museum ready to open at Willsbridge Mill A MUSEUM showing the history of Willsbridge Mill and nature reserve is set to open later this month. The attraction in Longwell Green will include a working replica water mill turbine that can be activated by pressing a button. A timeline will show the history of the site from Saxon times until modern day. The project to replace the old museum – just a few dated display boards – was funded by £10k from the government Culture Recovery Fund. The mill itself was built in 1712 as an iron mill, then a grain mill, but the building hasn’t been used as a mill since the 1960s following the great flood in the local area. Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh (WMCR), a group of volunteers, has been working for the past seven years to regenerate the main mill buildings and barn. Also within the new museum, colouring and activity tables will be set up for children once restrictions

allow. It is hoped that the mill’s onsite forest school, that opened last autumn but was forced to stop when Covid restrictions were ramped up, will reopen again soon. While the mill has been forced to close, the volunteers have put the time to good use. Visitors to the site will see a new, deeper pond that won’t suffer from drying out in the summer months like its predecessor did. There has also been planting around the area and new trees have been added to replace those removed last year due to ash dieback. A gift shop has been created alongside the museum. Later this year a classroom is planned for the site so that groups of school children can be welcomed, particularly those from inner-city schools who have less access to the countryside. WMCR spokesman Tom Baker said: “We have done a lot of the hard work over lockdown so hopefully everyone can spend the

summer enjoying the area. “Families can come here and go to forest school, do some pond dipping, eat at the café, visit the museum and gift shop and make a real day of it.” Initially the museum and gift shop will be open whenever the café is open, expected to be at weekends initially. Future plans include potentially moving the car park to be closer to the mill to make it more accessible to people with disabilities or pushing buggies. The current car park is 500m away along a muddy trail. The café has also been fitted with a projector and has applied for an alcohol licence, which gives potential for cinema evenings. The site usually runs numerous family events throughout the year, most of which had to be cancelled last year. They did still manage to install a fairy trail through the woods, ending at a decorated grotto, as well as a Halloween

n KINGSWOOD HERITAGE MUSEUM

John Horwood display ONE of this year’s four new displays at Kingswood Heritage Museum features the story of John Horwood, the first person to be hanged at Bristol New Gaol. John Horwood was born in Hanham, and worked in local pits as a child. He later worked with his father at a local spelter, most likely the Hanham Spelter Works John was accused of throwing a stone which hit the head of a local girl, Eliza Balsom, leading to her death. He stood trial and was found guilty of murder, and was hanged at Bristol New Gaol, the

gates of which still stand alongside “The Cut” near Prince Street Bridge. John was executed on 13th April 1821, just 3 days after his 18th birthday. His body was then dissected, and his skin was used to bind a book, held in the collections of Bristol Archives, that consists of the case notes and account of his trial. John’s remains were buried with his father at Christchurch, Hanham, at 1.30 pm on 13 April 2011, exactly 190 years to the hour after he was hanged.

n EDUCATION ADVERTISING FEATURE

Post-pandemic boost for creative education BRISTOL educator boomsatsuma is expanding, teaming up with George Ferguson to drive for change, with new studios in the Tobacco Factory to host four creative BA (Hons) degrees. Work is underway installing the purposebuilt education facility, which will welcome students in September 2021. It will comprise two new film studios, a screening lecture space, computer suite, games lab, darkroom and specially designed creative space, where students can develop and discuss ideas in an inspiring environment. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma director, states: “We’re very excited to be located at the Tobacco Factory - what a great place to live, learn and tap into the opportunities afforded by the Bristol Creative industries. Tobacco factory’s success perfectly illustrates what can be achieved by and for the people of our city. “ The new degrees have been accredited by Bath Spa University, whose Head of School of Creative Industries and board member of Bristol Creative Industries, Dr Susan McMillan states: “I am a huge supporter of boomsatsuma: they are reaching parts that Universities and other colleges cannot reach, as well as developing future creative talent in new and exciting ways. “The creative industries deliver significant economic, social and reputational value to Bristol, the region, and the UK's economy.”

Pictured Left to Right: George Ferguson, Mark Curtis and Freya Billington Freya Billington is the course director of boomsatsuma’s two new BA (Hons) Filmmaking degrees specialising in production and post-production. She says: “In keeping with boomsatsuma’s ethos, this degree has been designed alongside our industry partners to specifically address where the skill shortages are and help develop graduates that are completely prepared and ready for employment. The two pathways, Production and Post-Production, allow for students to engage with and develop an understanding of the whole filmmaking process but also specialise up to a professional level in their chosen field. Building on 13 years of successfully delivering post-16 level 3 diplomas in digital and creative qualifications, the new location strengthens boomsatsuma’s partnerships, adding to course locations with Bristol creative companies at The Royal Photographic Society, The Bottle Yard Studios, Films @ 59, Ashton Gate Stadium and the Engine Shed. George Ferguson CBE, the city’s first independent Mayor, and creator of the Tobacco Factory mixed use project, states: “We are delighted to be part of what we see as a sustainable recovery from this culturally and economically bruising pandemic. Ryan's goal: sharing football boots POLICE officer Ryan Day is asking people in Kingswood to hand over outgrown or unused football boots for redistribution to children in need. PC Day said that after a year of coronavirus restrictions it was important that all young people could have the chance to take part in extra-curricular activities. No one should be unable to participate because of a lack of sports footwear. He is leading a campaign for boots to be handed over at pre-approved drop-off points, including King’s Oak Academy. PC Day, a neighbourhood constable who works as an engagement and prevention officer with school, created the Caring for the Community: Football Boots Initiative, which is being supported by the Avon and Somerset force and Cabot Learning Federation.

Ryan Day with some of the boots that have already been donated

He said: “Covid-19 has had a huge financial impact on many families throughout the country. Giving another young person the opportunity to make use of a perfectly good pair of boots can only be a good thing. This

initiative is all about caring for the community and aims to give outgrown boots a second life and limit the need for families to buy brand new, and often expensive football and rugby boots. It also provides an opportunity for

families with unwanted boots to give back to the community and improve the lives of others.” “Part of our approach to policing during Covid-19 is to inspire and encourage members of the public to be good neighbours and to look after one another, which is what this initiative is all about. We want to encourage people to donate their old boots to others in their communities who will be able to reuse them and get continued use from them.” The donated boots will be distributed to schools within the CLF and given to students who do not have their own boots. The boots can be dropped off at KOA between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. Any donated boots need to be weatherproof, in good condition and in Sizes 2 – 11. Please only donate boots in line with Covid-19 regulations.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB FRYS Bowling Club have started the new season by launching a new website. The website has the latest news and match reports from our league and cup games. More content and archives are planned to be added throughout the season to help keep you informed about the club. The new website address is www.frysbowlingclub.wixsite.com/ frys. At the time of writing, Bowls England are yet to release the conditions for playing bowls in the coming months. We are hopeful that we will be able to play matches against other clubs. Our season runs from mid-April to the end of September. The club plays friendly matches on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and for those who like a competitive match, we play in the Bristol and District League on Thursday evenings, as well as a number of cup matches. We also offer internal club competitions and there are plenty of opportunities for those who prefer to play socially. If you are new to the game, we hope to be able to offer tuition throughout the season. The club will look to offer as much play as the regulations from Bowls England and the government allow. The news page on our new website will have updates about the playing conditions and what the club are able to offer, so check it out for the latest updates. Alternatively, please contact our secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, e-mail: frysbowlsclub@gmail.com, for updates, apply for membership, or arrange tuition. You can also visit our website for more information: www. frysbowlingclub.wixsite.com/frys, and follow us on Twitter: @FrysBowls."

County star comes to coach WITH the season now only a few weeks away, subject to guidelines, Carsons and Mangotsfield Cricket Club are preparing for the start of the new season with optimism. They have appointed a club coach for the first time, Jared Warner. Jared has signed to play for Gloucestershire this season, having moved south from Yorkshire. He came up through the Yorkshire youth ranks and toured Australia with England U19’s. One of his reasons for making the move was to work with Richard Dawson, Gloucestershire and England Lions coach. Jared is a current level 2 coach, working towards his level 3, and the club are hoping that his experiences of playing and training with top level coaches and players will give the club a different perspective. Last summer Jared set up Cutting Edge Cricket with his Yorkshire county colleague, Matthew Waite. The appointment is on a trial basis

for April, although the club will review during the month and then decide on the rest of the season. The sessions are on a Tuesday evening at Pomphrey Hill. In addition to the coaching sessions the club are also organising preseason fitness sessions. These will start at the beginning of April. During the season Carsons and Mangotsfield are also celebrating 100 years of “Carsons Cricket Club” and have arranged some additional matches. The first is on the May 31, when they play Somerset Over 60s, then on July 11 the visitors are the MCC. The club are also participating in the All Stars/ Dynamos Cricket programme, which is aimed at children aged from five to nine years old. These sessions will start at the beginning of May. Within this they have a specific girl’s section, with the aim to encourage more girls to come forward and try playing cricket. If you are interested in or have a child interested in playing cricket, please contact me on 07746 112998. Ian Coles
