Plans unveiled for 24-hour drive-thru in Asda car park A FAST-FOOD drive-thru will open in the Asda Longwell Green car park if plans are approved by South Gloucestershire Council. The 24-hour drive-thru will be built in the corner closest to where traffic curves up into the Asda car park. As well as a drive-thru option, the restaurant will also have indoor seating for up to 20 customers, plus external seating. There will be a separate collection point for delivery services such as Deliveroo and Just Eat. Applicants EG Group hasn’t specified which fast-food chain will occupy the drive-thru. Similar drive-thru projects of theirs have been primarily for KFC, though others have included for Burger King and Subway. Other clues that the restaurant is likely to be KFC include references to not using palm oil and a recent award for its vegan offering from PETA. The application states that used cooking oil from the site will be recycled into biodiesel by Olleco, which advertises its work for KFC on its website. The Asda car park will lose 41 parking spaces and five trees to make way for the drive-thru. Customers wanting to eat inside will share the existing parking spaces with Asda customers. To mitigate likely concerns about antisocial behaviour and litter, the applicants have pledged to litter pick three times a day around the restaurant. Turn to Page 2

24-hour drive-thru plan for Asda car park From Page 1 There will also be a dedicated email inbox for people to report discarded packaging in the community. The 40 staff will be trained in dealing with drunk, “challenging customers” and CCTV will keep watch inside and outside the premises. More than 20 public comments have been submitted to the council already, mainly in opposition to the drive-thru. One resident wrote: “You have already let Asda have a new fuel filling station that is 24hrs and the signage has caused distress to local residents who have to cope with the unpleasant view. “Now you expect them to cope with a food outlet 24hrs. NO No No No.” Another wrote: “This area does not need another food outlet let alone one that is 24 hour AND a drive through. “The litter created would

undoubtedly be thrown out of cars along [the] ring road and who is going to pick that up? Because it certainly won’t be the council. “At a time when the global agenda is to create less waste, encourage us all to eat more healthily and to use our cars less, this application seems to be taking us backwards.” However, some people are in favour of the new restaurant. One supporter wrote: “The area needs rejuvenation and I feel this would be a benefit to local residents.” Another wrote: “All these people moaning about the noise from Asda, bought a house near a supermarket then [are] complaining about the supermarket. “It gets my support all day long.” South Gloucestershire Council hasn’t announced when a decision will be made on the planning application.

Dancing girls recreate children's TV classic BILL and Ben the Flower Pot Men were brought to life through dance by twins from Hanham. Elsie and Gracie Smith, age eight, performed as the 1950s favourites at their first ballet competition. They were delighted to come away with a silver medal. Dad Ben said he’d shown the girls old videos of the black-andwhite puppet TV show to give them a flavour of the inspiration for their dance. He said: “They were quite interested in watching it for a bit. “We had to make the costumes ourselves. I was chief prop builder and made the Weed pot. “Their performance was a choregraphed dance set to classical music.” Gracie and Elsie, pupils at Christ Church Hanham primary school, are planning to reprise their performance in the hope of getting another medal. They are rehearsing at Signature dance studios in Kingswood ready to revive their Bill and Ben dance at Longwell Green & Kingswood Performing Arts Festival in October.

Funds for Hanham roads resurfacing

FUNDING to repair and resurface local roads has been announced by South Gloucestershire council. In Hanham £180,000 will be spent on work on roads including Whittucks Road and Birdwood while a further £360,000 is earmarked for roads around Longwell Green, Barrs Court, Cadbury Heath, Parkwall and Warmley. Marygold Leaze, St Annes Close, Queens Road, Park Way, Park Close and Home Mead are all due improvements. Brenda Langley from Hanham Abbots parish council said: “It is fantastic to see a number of important roads in and around our community are set to get the funding they need to keep them to a high standard. “As local councillors we will continue to push for our communities to get the investment they need. “We would encourage residents to get in touch if they have concerns about the condition of their roads.” Funding also includes completing work to strengthen Bitton Bridge Sam Bromiley, ward councillor for Parkwall and Warmley, said: “It’s great to

see investment being made to ensure that we have the kind of infrastructure to keep us connected, not just focusing on improving conditions for motorists, but also for cyclists, pedestrians and bus users. “As well as Homemead, Parkway and Park Close being resurfaced I am delighted that a further £75,000 is set to be used to repair and improve footpaths locally.” Kingswood will have £420,000 spent on roads including Hill Street, Furzewood Road, Honey Hill Road and Bellevue Road. Steve Reade, South Glos cabinet member for Regeneration, Environment and Strategic Infrastructure said: “It is important that residents can look out their front door and be proud to call South Gloucestershire home. “This is why we are continuing our record investment into maintaining local roads. “We continue to provide the resources to support all forms of travel, particularly with more people choosing to get out of their car and enjoy more sustainable ways to get around, such as walking and cycling.”

Councillor Steve Reade celebrates the resurfacing funding

Traffic calming for Memorial Road A ‘SPEED table’ road hump has been proposed for the junction of Memorial Road with New Walk. South Gloucestershire council is consulting on the proposed traffic calming measure until 9 April. The 30m-long road hump would span the width of Memorial Road, as well as extending 11m into New Walk. It is needed because of the redevelopment of the Kleeneze site. Goods access to the Sealtech warehouse is moving from Ansteys Road to New Walk. The traffic calming scheme is intended to make it safer to access the new entrance. In its plans, South Gloucestershire council wrote: “The scheme is intended to reduce traffic speeds on Memorial Road in the vicinity of its junction with New Walk thus providing a safer environment for pedestrians to cross and for other vulnerable road users. “The feature should also assist vehicles egressing from New Walk due to the lower predicted speeds.”

Egg-cellent fun for children on Good Friday EASTER fun is coming to Hanham High Street in the form of a free Easter egg trail. From 10am to 3pm on Good Friday, youngsters will be able to hunt down 12 pictures of Easter eggs displayed in shop windows. Each egg has a letter printed on it, which will form a sentence. The children will be able to hand their completed entry form in at the end to get a certificate and Easter egg. Entry forms can be collected at the top of Hanham High Street on the day. The exact location will be confirmed on social media ahead of Good Friday. The trail will lead children down the road

towards Magpie Bottom. There will also be a few red herrings planted along the way. Some shops will display pictures of bunnies instead, with words such as “Keep going” and “No egg here.” All the pictures are being coloured by groups of children at Christchurch preschool. They will be labelled with the names of those who made it, so children can look out for ‘their’ egg. The trail is being organised by Bex Collier, who runs Glam Squad beauty salon on Hanham High Street. She said: “I go along to as many of the

There are lots of things going on through the year but it’s often left to the same people to organise it. “I wanted to do my bit by having a go at organising a trail and letting all the children have some fun. “It’s ending at Magpie Bottom to encourage children to go and enjoy the nature there afterwards.” Her niece and nephew, Lexi and Finley, are among the pre-schoolers colouring in the eggs and are already excited about attending the hunt. A number of local business owners have agreed to help with the cost of the prizes.

Parents' fears on knife crime PARENTS concerned about their children being threatened with knives have confronted local police. Neighbourhood constables PC Aaron Ashforth and PC Jack Withers were called to account at the Kingswood Community Engagement Forum. Four parents attended the meeting to complain their children had been targeted by an individual teenager or gang of teenagers carrying a knife. One mother, Helen, said one of the parents at the meeting had had her Year 7 son accosted in Kingswood Park by a gang of four school children. She said: “They threatened him with a knife, forced him to his knees, made him sing to them, recorded it and uploaded it on social media. Those same four children have been terrorising Kingswood and Hanham. The escalation is now they’re using knives. It’s come to a point for me personally that my child is unable to leave the house because two of these individuals live literally a two-minute walk either side. He’s not safe in school, he’s been attacked in school, he’s not safe out of school. I’m getting stones thrown at my windows by these children. And yet it seems like the police have no power to take these individuals in house, confiscate their phones and do due diligence to try and do something

about these families. “Something has to be done before somebody gets stabbed.” Another parent, Scott, said his son had told him the main offender had been sent by the police on a knife crime course but it hadn’t helped. He said: “He’s subsequently managed to get hold of another knife and he’s back out doing it again. As parents that are on here this evening we would just like some assurance that certain individuals now with repeat offences for knife crime are going to be dealt with. “My son has also gone through the same experience that Helen’s has, with being frightened and not being able to go out.” PC Ashforth said: “We have taken these incidents hugely seriously. There have been five incidents and only in a couple of those have knives been seen. “It is being investigated and as you rightly say it is the most concerning thing for us that a young person would even consider having a knife. “There’s a lot we can’t share about it because it relates to ongoing investigations but even today we’ve been spending time in Kingswood Park. We know who those people are that you mentioned and it is very much on our radar." He offered to tell parents who were directly affected more about the investigation in private.

First-time author spends every day surrounded by books A SCHOOL librarian from Barrs Court has achieved her dream of landing a book deal. Lis Jardine, 44, has had her debut novel for children aged nine to 12 snapped up by publishers Puffin. The Detention Detectives is due to hit the shelves next January. She said: “It’s a murder mystery set in a contemporary secondary school. “The main character finds a dead body in the PE shed during his first week at school and is drawn into the investigation to solve the murder.” She came up with the story while completing a Writing for Young People MA at Bath Spa university. She took the course part-time while bringing up her daughters, who are now age 14 and 15. The book is the first in a trilogy, with each book told from the point of view of a different character.

Lis has already completed the second book, which will be published by Puffin in 2023. She is hoping they will also want the third book once she’s finished writing it. When she’s not busy writing, Lis is the school librarian at Hanham Woods Academy. She said: “It’s my dream job. I love children’s literature and talking to children about books. “When I started, the school library had been shut down for four or five years because they were using the space for a sixth form. “I had to start the library again from scratch, which was very exciting. “When I was younger I read constantly. I enjoyed books like Anne of Green Gables, Little Women and the Narnia books. “I love middle-grade fiction because it’s really enjoyable and positive. A lot of adult fiction can be quite miserable and negative.” Lis said she has seen early illustrations for

Food waste shock PEOPLE are being asked to make more use of their food bins and recycling boxes after a survey found almost half of waste going into South Gloucestershire's black bins could be recycled. The council takes samples from black bins across the district to find out what is being thrown into them by residents. The annual survey found 44% of the contents of black bins could have been recycled in kerbside collections. And food waste made up 29% of the total amount of waste being thrown away, despite having dedicated weekly collections, while black bins are only picked up once per fortnight. The council said that while some types of food waste, such as fruit and veg peelings, eggshells and tea bags, were generally put out for recycling, many residents were still throwing bags of potatoes, loaves of bread and jars with food inside into the black bins. Food that is collected for recycling in South Gloucestershire is processed in Bristol by GENeco, which extracts biogas to generate electricity and uses leftover material as a non-chemical farming fertiliser. Council cabinet member Rachael Hunt said: "Recycling our food waste is easy, so we really want to see people taking more care to ensure it is placed in the correct bin. “Recycle all of your food waste – plate scrapings, leftover pet food, food that’s off or past its best, peelings, eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds. If you have a bag of veg that can’t be eaten or a mouldy loaf, you don’t need to take it out of the bag, just put it straight into your food recycling bin.” New outdoor food waste containers and indoor kitchen caddies can be ordered online at www.southglos.gov.uk/recycling, where there are also details of other services such as free disposable nappy collections.

Librarian Lis Jardine the book and is hoping to see a physical copy for the first time this autumn. She said: “I keep thinking they’re going to turn around and say they’ve realised it’s rubbish after all. “I can’t quite believe it’s being published. It’s very exciting.”

Video leads to book for autistic children

A VIRAL video of an autistic schoolboy reading a poem has led to his mother publishing her own book. A year ago Eli Smith, age six, recorded a poem for his classmates at Beacon Rise primary school. The poem, What Makes Me, ME!, explained that everyone is unique and autism is part of who he is. It was viewed more than 50,000 times on social media. Eli’s mother, Tracey Lear, 42, was inspired by the response to the poem to expand it and turn it into a book. The book is called Eli’s Story: What makes me, ME! Tracey, from Hanham, said: “Lots of parents of autistic children got in touch with me after they saw Eli’s video. “I thought it would be nice to turn it into a book so parents could use it as a tool. For example, if their child has just received their diagnosis and

wanting to talk to people about autism. He invites his friends to a party and reads them his poem. The book ends with him asking his friends, “What makes you, you?” emphasising that everyone has things that make

them different. Tracey worked with an illustrator in Germany to create cartoon images of Eli and sister Millie, age two. She then selfpublished the book through Blue Falcon Publishing. She said: “Millie absolutely loves seeing the pictures of her in the book. “I did a lot of research for the book including talking to autistic adults to get feedback. I didn’t want to write anything that would upset anybody. They gave me feedback on certain wordings and I made a few tweaks.” She has donated copies of the book to several schools who don’t have funds to buy copies. She said: “I am getting good reviews from other parents of autistic children.I hope the book will help children understand their autistic friends more easily, and help all children celebrate what makes them unique.”

Cossham minor injuries unit 'long overdue' MORE than 5,000 people have backed calls for a Minor Injuries Unit at Cossham Hospital. Residents say that it is needed so people in the Kingswood area don’t have to travel to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead Hospital or Yate Minor Injuries Unit, which are several miles away and are all overstretched. A petition started by Josh Ditte, a urology and blood service nurse at Southmead Hospital, and reinforced by The Week In newspaper, has been submitted to the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group and is due to be considered this month. It is also being sent to North Bristol NHS Trust, local MPs, Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The 5,078-signature petition won crossparty support at South Gloucestershire Council’s health scrutiny committee last month. Kingswood Labour Councillor Andrea Reid said it was difficult for people to get to the main hospitals or to Yate if they did not have a car or when they were injured so could not

drive. She said many residents had contacted her about the problem, including one mother of children with brittle bone disease who often needed X-rays and currently had to go to Bristol Children’s Hospital. “As a council we want to narrow the inequality gap. Health outcomes will be less

positive as a knock-on effect [of not having an MIU in Kingswood],” she said. Lib Dem Councillor Ruth Davis said the Yate MIU had extended its opening hours but this was not enough to meet demand. Another MIU at Cossham was needed to help reduce pressure on Bristol and Southmead hospitals, she said. Conservative Judy Adams said she hoped the campaign was successful as an MIU at Cossham was long overdue. Cossham Hospital, which opened on Lodge Hill over a century ago, had been due to close completely in 2004. Following a huge community campaign, it was saved and underwent a £19 million refurbishment. Nowadays it is home to a small birth centre, outpatient services, physiotherapy, a dialysis unit, audiology department and X-ray and scanning department and is the base for the out-of-hours GP service. An MIU at Cossham was considered but the plan was dropped in favour of a pilot service treating minor injuries at local GP surgeries, which was not continued .

School welcomes its first pupils

Defibrillator donation

LIFE-saving skills are being taught to pupils at Parkwall primary as well as a defibrillator being installed. The defibrillator was donated by charity Jay’s Aim, which is trying to reduce the rate of sudden cardiac death among young people in the South West. It has been placed close to the school field in Cadbury Heath to be used in case of emergency. Year 5 and 6 pupils will also be taught first aid, CPR and other life-saving skills by Jay’s Aim. The school is the latest of more than 50 locations where the charity has installed public access defibrillators. Teacher Mr Bickle is pictured with Year 6 pupils Phoebe and Alfie and Jonny Mawer of Bristol Bears

THE first pupils have been welcomed to Neptune school in Wamley. An initial seven pupils with special educational needs have started at the school, with four more joining over the coming weeks. The school will eventually educate up to 25 pupils age seven to 14. Neptune took over the former Redroofs nursery site in Poplar Road last year. The building was completely refurbished and the school then needed to wait for Ofsted registration before opening. Head teacher Rachel Lynch said: “We were so pleased to welcome our first cohort of students. “I am pleased to report that they are settling in well. “We are so excited for the

next term at Neptune, when more students will be joining us to grow our school further.” New play equipment in the garden has been fitted just in time for the spring weather. The first pupils have also been making use of the student kitchen to learn some culinary skills. Ms Lynch said: “All of our students have had a go at cooking up some fantastic and tasty creations in our student kitchen and filling our school with beautiful smells.” Recipes have included cupcakes, brownies and red velvet cake, as well as a chicken nugget “taste off” challenge. The new independent school is part of the Phoenix Learning & Care group, which is based in Devon and runs 40 facilities across the South West.

Community stands with Ukraine A WOMAN'S mission to help the people of her native Ukraine after it was invaded by Russia sparked a phenomenal community response. Vera Stadon asked for donations in a Facebook post and, after they soon filled her living room, she teamed up with Viv Roberts, the manager of Emersons Green Village Hall, who offered her a room to store them in. Within days, as word of the appeal spread across the area, tons of supplies had been donated, from medical equipment to military kit. Dozens of people brought, sorted and loaded donations. Joining British and Ukrainian volunteers were Poles, Lithuanians and even some Russians living in the area, while donations were brought from across the region and as far as Wales. The donations were then taken to the Poland-Ukraine border – the first load by a

Ukrainian lorry which had made a delivery in the UK and had been due to go back empty. Five van loads and a further lorry load were taken by volunteers, including drivers from the Emersons Green depot of delivery firm DPD, Staple Hill mechanic Nathan Calder and his friend Wesley Hawkes, members of Bristol Manor Farm football club and a Bristol father and daughter, Kev and Rhi Draper, who have stayed in Poland to help bring refugees away from the Ukrainian border and give

food and drink to people waiting to cross. Vera, who lives in Mangotsfield, said: "I cried a lot when I saw the news of the big disaster happening in my country. "My friends started calling me, saying we should get some aid together. I never thought it would be that big – all I wanted was to send one van. "Suddenly my living room was overflowing, so I asked Viv if she could help. "It's devastating and horrible

what's happening in Ukraine, but the help and donations are amazing – people's power is sometimes more than the big charities. I've been either overwhelmed with joy or crying at why I have to do this. I've had so much help." Vera was given leave from her job with Bristol City Council while she organised the donations and transport. Supporters "exhausted every military store in England" to find helmets and other protective equipment, while also bringing medicine and first aid kits, dried food, nappies and sanitary products. Vera, a married mum of three, has lived in the area since 2008, having moved to the UK in 1997. Her mother, brother and sister-in-law and their three children were still in Ukraine as the Voice went to print. Vera is sharing updates about future donations and fundraising on the Facebook page Emerson's Help Ukraine.

The wonders of World Book Day

Children and staff at Christchurch Preschool in Hanham celebrated World Book Day with dressing up, face painting and bringing books to share together. The day included lots of story reading with acting out and using puppets and props.

n WHERE’S Wally, Mr Bump and the Very Hungry Caterpillar were some of the World Book Day costumes at Parkwall primary. Pupils at the Cadbury Heath school dressed as a famous book character and enjoyed a day of book-related activities. These included writing and illustrating stories, making bookthemed art and crafts, plus an assembly to listen to a new book bought for the school library. Now that libraries are operating normally again, each class will resume weekly visits to Cadbury Heath librarys. Head of school Gary Risdale said: “Events like World Book Day highlight the importance of celebrating the excellent work we do in developing children’s reading and love of reading.”

Cancer centre's call

A CENTRE for cancer patients and their families is expanding its services and is urging people who could benefit to find out more. The National Garden Scheme Macmillan Wellbeing Centre at Southmead Hospital Bristol is running workshops and talks throughout April for people living with cancer and their carers. The centre opened seven years ago but had to provide more online and telephone services during the pandemic, while adapting its face to face services for vulnerable patients. Now improvements at the NGS centre, which provides a place for people affected by cancer to come for information and support, are being funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and Southmead Hospital Charity. 'Cancer navigator' and former support worker Sue Mitchell said: "Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a time of real uncertainty for all concerned. It can also be a really lonely time. "The NGS Macmillan Wellbeing Centre is there to provide vital reassurance and support when people need it most." The building is open for booked appointments and anyone who is affected by cancer can call 0117 414 7051 on weekdays or email wellbeingcentre@nbt.nhs.uk. Information is available by searching for NGS Macmillan Wellbeing Centre at www.nbt.nhs.uk.

Craft brings myths and legends to life MYTHICAL mermaids and leaping leprechauns were brought to life during a craft session at Hanham library. The half-term events attracted 40 children who enjoyed making owl snap cards, lizard wristbands, mermaids and a range of other creatures from mythical tales. Parent Katie Gingell attended with her daughters, who enjoyed making a range of crafts. She said: “Jill at the library was really excited as it was the first big event they’ve been able

to have since Covid.” The library also handed out 120 craft bags to children who weren’t able to get a place at the sessions, so they could do the crafts at home. There are two Easter craft sessions at Hanham library on 14 April at 10am and 11.15am.

Craft sessions also take place at Kingswood library on 9 April at 10am. For children who cant attend any of the sessions craft bags with similar activities in will be available throughout the Easter holidays for you to collect and do at home.

Rees-Mogg defends 'ancient county' JACOB Rees-Mogg has hit out at plans to “merrily chop up” one of the United Kingdom’s “most ancient counties”. The MP’s North East Somerset constituency will be redrawn under Boundary Commission for England’s proposals to rebalance the number of electors represented by each Member of Parliament. If approved, its western section will absorb the firmly Conservative South Gloucestershire wards of Hanham, Longwell Green, Parkwall & Warmley, and Bitton & Oldland Common and become Keynsham and North East Somerset; communities in the east will join a new Frome constituency and areas north of Bath will come under an expanded city seat. Mr Rees-Mogg, who has held his seat since it was formed in 2010 and was reelected in 2019 with a majority of more than 14,000, said in his objection to the Boundary Commission: “The former county of Avon was viewed with considerable antipathy by most of its residents who preferred to be in their historic counties. The basis of these proposals thus has the perverse effect of trying to recreate an unpopular local tie which was abolished 25 years ago.”

He said the Boundary Commission recognised Dorset as a ceremonial county but ignored the equally important Somerset and Gloucestershire, which were being “merrily chopped up”. “As I am sure you know, Bristol has historically been viewed as looking to Gloucestershire, including having the county cricket ground within its boundary, so there is no tie broken or created by viewing them together. Equally, Somerset is one of the kingdom’s most ancient counties.” Mr Rees-Mogg did not suggest an alternative but argued that the proposals did not meet the requirements of the legislation. The shakeup was revealed last June in a bid to deliver the legal requirement of between 69,724 and 77,062 voters in each constituency. In 2018, Bath’s electorate stood at 59,887 and North East Somerset’s was well within that margin at 70,070. Mr Rees-Mogg is not the only person to raise concerns about the proposals. In one response to the Boundary Commission, a Pensford voter said it “cannot be right for democracy” that the village’s traditional links with Somerset were being “erased and ignored”. The plans were branded a “nightmare” by

a Bristol man, who said the River Avon had always been a natural border for councils. “Common sense should say that mixing South Gloucestershire county region with the Bath and North East Somerset region will add confusion to existing voters. How is it feasible to expect support for this absurd politically motivated plan?” he said. Someone in Kingswood said splitting the communities between the Bristol East and Keynsham and North East Somerset constituencies “demonstrates little or no understanding of local cultural, historic and economic realities” and warned it would sow confusion among voters. The current consultation on the proposals closes on April 4. Boundary Commission secretary Tim Bowden said: “Constituency boundaries are changing, and this is your chance to have your say. Our review of all constituencies in England is an important process. It will make sure each MP represents roughly the same number of electors across the country.” Public hearings will be held in Bath’s Assembly Rooms on March 28 and 29. Crackdown on illegal e-scooters POLICE in Kingswood are cracking down on use of illegal E-Scooters on public roads and pavements. Anyone caught using one is given an official warning. If they’re caught again, police seize the scooter. Neighbourhood constable PC Aaron Ashforth told Kingswood Community Engagement Forum that the beat team is trying to educate people using electric scooters to commute. He said: “It is an offence. For anyone who might have a family member or friend using an E-Scooter, unless it’s the council Voi scooters you are not allowed to ride that on the highway and

definitely not on a pavement. “You will be uninsured and, especially if you’re underage, you will have points on your licence before you start. “The procedure for that has been that we will stop somebody and check our records to see whether or not they’ve had a warning. “If they have had a warning, we will seize the bike but we’re in such early stages of it that very rarely do we catch somebody who has had a warning. We’re building up a database full of people that have been given warnings.”

Life aboard the SS Great Britain WITH Easter holidays just around the corner, we're looking forward to the fragrance of freshly cut grass and sprouting flowers as spring gets into full swing. However, life aboard the SS Great Britain did not smell quite as sweet. In fact, some of the odours of a nineteenth century passenger ship would be enough to send you overboard. Brunel's SS Great Britain, the 'world's smelliest museum', already includes hundreds of sights, sounds and smells. However, this Easter, they're inviting visitors to rate the smells and help them choose new ones! Some of the new smells under consideration include the rich scents of dark chocolate and brandy, the homely aroma of roast beef, and the pong of boiled cabbage. Be sure to follow Brunel's SS Great Britain on social media for a look behind-the-scenes as they prepare for the holidays and book your tickets on their website to join in the fun. ssgreatbritain.org/easter

Wearing red for Comic Relief CHILDREN were seeing red when they took on a colourful charity challenge. The Year 6 charity committee at St Barnabas primary school in North Common organised a “red day” fundraiser. Pupils and staff dressed in red and even the school dinner cakes had red noses in aid of Comic Relief. Teacher and charity committee lead Sally Cornelius said: “During the week children had the opportunity to learn a little more about what would happen with the money raised. “They reflected on how children across the country can benefit from the work that Comic Relief do and why this has such an impact in their lives. We raised a brilliant £197.12.”

Elite rugby training for pupils - via hologram IF you were offered a training session from three England rugby players during the Six Nations tournament, you might think it was a prank! But, this is exactly what happened for 15 pupils at Summerhill Academy. A crack team of experts from Virgin Media and O2 descended on the school in St George via the latest cutting-edge hologram technology to make the training happen. Ellis Genge (Bristolborn and an ex-John Cabot Academy student), Jack Knowle and Henry Slade from the England Rugby team delivered a live real-time coaching session using the latest 5G technology. The players were beamed in from their hotel, giving instructions and pro tips to pupils, which were shown by hologram in the

school hall. There was also a live question and answer session with the players, who talked to pupils about how they train, what they eat to stay fit and healthy and who their heroes were when growing up. The children were interviewed by TV personality Radzi Chinyanganya as part of the event. The amazing event was filmed by Virgin Media and O2 and the school will receive a copy of this film once it is edited. Chris Barratt, principal of Summerhill Academy said: “This was an amazing opportunity for the Summerhill community. There aren’t many schools that can say they hosted the first ever live 5G hologram training session with professional athletes in their school hall!”

Shock and horror at Ukraine invasion AS the local MP, I share the shock and horror that local residents feel towards Russia’s appalling invasion of the sovereign state of Ukraine, along with an instinctive urge to want to support the Ukrainian people in any way we can. Putin’s regime is rightly being punished with the most severe economic sanctions Russia has ever seen and I am proud that the UK government is the largest bilateral donor to Ukraine, providing almost £400 million in aid alongside defensive support and our offers of sanctuary to innocent Ukrainians. Over 100,000 sponsors signed up for our uncapped Homes for Ukraine scheme within the first day of the scheme going live, supporting our national effort to help Ukrainians fleeing this deadly conflict.

The scheme allows sponsors in the UK – who will receive £350 per month in support – to register their interest in providing homes or spare rooms for a minimum stay of six months to nominated individual Ukrainians or Ukrainian families. On the economic side, 1,000 individuals and entities have been sanctioned, which has dealt a severe blow to the Russian economy, hobbling Russia’s military-industrial complex, and personally damaging Putin and his inner circle of corrupt oligarchs. I was pleased to vote for the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act which provides new powers to sanction a further 370 key oligarchs and supporters of the Putin regime – 51 of these oligarchs are worth more than £100 billion.

Furthermore, we are phasing out all imports of Russian oil and oil products by the end of 2022, which currently support around 8% of UK demand – giving businesses enough time to ensure a smooth transition so that consumers will not be affected, and working with them this year to secure further supplies. New legislation has made it a criminal offence for any aircraft owned, operated, or chartered by anyone connected with Russia or sanctioned individuals or entities to enter UK airspace or land in the UK, and will also include the power to detain any aircraft owned by persons connected with Russia. All these are just some of the higher-profile actions that the UK government is taking so that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people in

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI OUR first WI meeting in January hopefully lifted the spirits of our members. Instead of a speaker we played games including Handbag Bingo, Scattergories and Quizzes. There was a lot of laughter and fun with some of the answers. We then had social time where we could catch up with friends we hadn't seen for a while. For our February meeting we had an interesting talk by Tony Rance entitled "Toastmaster to the Queen" . He gave us an insight into the roles that he has to perform at weddings, topping out ceremonies and various functions. He also told us stories of his work with royalty and famous people. An interesting fact the first toastmaster was Beau Nash in Bath. At our March WI meeting we had Tai Chi. Margaret Bryant, a member of Longwell Green WI, runs a Tai Chi group at the local community centre every week. She gave us some background and history of Tai Chi followed by a demonstration of some of the Tai Chi moves and then we all

took part in the whole exercise. Everyone was concentrating so much you could hear a pin drop!! It was much enjoyed by everyone whether standing or sitting down to do the moves. Our Quiz Night was enjoyed by all, certainly put the grey cells back in action with great debate between team members to try and come up with the correct answers. In April we are looking forward to a trip to Kingswood Heritage Museum where we are having a guided tour and talk. Also we have a trip planned to go to Fonthill garden centre for a talk and demonstration. We have an interesting and varied programme planned for this year which includes talks about Downend in Bloom and Queen Victoria's life. We have trips organised to Chavenage House, Windsor and the Brecon Beacons. We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group and craft club. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at The Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat.

Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com, telephone 0117 9864782 or come along on the meeting evening. Linda Muller

MANGOTSFIELD WI FOR our February meeting we held our Queen’s 70th Platinum Anniversary of ascending to the throne. She had gone to Kenya on a royal tour, aged just 25, and was enjoying a treehouse-style lodge in a remote part of Kenya with her husband Prince Philip when the news broke of her father’s death and she became the new sovereign - flying to Kenya a princess and returning as Queen. We decked our hall with bunting and decorated the tables, set out street party style, with crowns, flags and red, white and blue tablecloths.

All members raided their wardrobe to find purple, red, white and blue attire - plus, of course, some amazing hats! We had a wonderful evening, with boxed ‘afternoon teas’ and a lovely lady singer who sang songs from each decade of our Queen’s reign. We toasted her majesty with elderflower pressé and at the end of the evening sang ‘God Save the Queen’. It was a lovely evening, which I’m sure all our members enjoyed and will remain in their memory for a long time. Our March meeting, on the 28th, is a craft evening, decorating the afternoon tea boxes. April will feature Andrew Stocker, on the Theatre Royal (Bristol Old Vic). n WHAT'S ON

n ANTIQUES

Are TV auctions real?

IT'S impossible to turn on a television these days and not be able to find a programme concerning antiques being broadcast – Bargain Hunt, Dickinson’s Real Deal, Antiques Roadshow etc. Over the years we’ve had the pleasure to work on nearly all of these programmes (and some pilots that never made it to screen!) but a question we frequently get asked; are those auctions on TV, real? Well, the short answer is ... yes. What you see on screen is usually a fair representation of what happened during the sale. Of course, there are edits made, and sometimes shots ‘inserted’ to fill a gap, and sometimes large chunks cut out for timing reasons. But from our end – as hosts of the auction – the sales run completely as normal, albeit with a camera crew watching your every move! Two experiences spring to mind when talking about TV auctions – the first happened many years ago when Antiques Road Trip made one of their first visits to our saleroom. An antiques fair had been cancelled, and we actually only received the items that were due for auction the night before the sale. This gave nobody a chance to view the items, or even discover them, especially the online bidders. We were frantically working until 2am to get them in the online catalogue. Naturally, during the auction, they didn’t particularly do very well, for this reason! The second experience happened much more recently during another episode of Antiques Road Trip. One of the experts had purchased a lovely Art Nouveau letter box. Oak, with a slit in the top and a decorative panel to the front. I think the expert had paid something like forty-five pounds at an antiques fair. It came up, and after a long battle it ended up selling for over two thousand pounds! It was an exciting auction. But when shown on television it took up less than a minute of screen time! So yes, those antique programmes you watch are accurate – but very often a lot of the auction fever ends up on the cutting room floor! Andy Stowe East Bristol Auctions

The Covid pandemic - is it over? WITH the end of free universal NHS lateral flow tests, mandatory self-isolation and other public health measures, coupled with a warmer weather, it does feel like the much longed-for COVID freedom has arrived but has it really? Case numbers rose as restrictions were lifted at the end of February, although daily death figures remain low. This is due to the successful rollout of the vaccination programme; Ellacombe Pharmacy is very proud to be part of this. The spring booster programme starting now offers a fourth dose to the most vulnerable, including the 75 years and over and all immunosuppressed people aged 12 years and above. Everyone can still access their first, second,

or third booster dose, while all children aged 5 to 11 are also now offered a dose. While the vaccination programme is the cornerstone of the government strategy, with much debate about rolling back some of the other things, you and I are being asked to use our common sense – Do the Right Thing for Everyone. Most people do not like maskwearing, but it protects, especially the most vulnerable in our society. Health care settings continue to request this. You do not know if the person standing in front of you is receiving treatment for cancer or has a child or close relative who is. Consider the same in crowded places like supermarkets? Alcohol hand gels – yes, that mantra, hand, face, and space. It

has become a ritual, and you most likely still have access to supplies; please keep using them, and stop the spread. While testing may not be free anymore, data shows a significant surge in demand before the free provision ended and if now at an affordable cost –taking a test before meeting up with people is a small price. Use up any stockpiles before they expire. Our relief at the freedoms we have gained is always tempered with a memory of the trauma before. Ellacombe Pharmacy continues to be part of the vaccination programme offering vaccinations in the pharmacy and at the Longwell Green Community Centre. You can book ahead on the NHS Bookings website or use our Walk-in service.

Big free party plan for Queen's Jubilee PLANS are under way to bring the Kingswood community together for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June. A funfair is booked for Kingswood park and a giant LCD screen will show the procession in central London on 5th June. Everyone will be invited to bring a picnic to the park on the Sunday to watch the parade. There will also be some free picnics distributed to people who usually use food banks, so that nobody is excluded from the event. Camille James, Head of Kingswood Regeneration, said: “Most people are having things on the Friday or Saturday, so our plan is to have it on Sunday 5 June. “I just think it’s a brilliant thing to try and get people out. If people don’t want to watch

Ms James said: “We’ve got a meeting planned with lots of other groups to find out what everyone wants to do. We’ve had a couple of schools say they’d like to participate by doing singing, dancing and drama. The leisure centre also wants to do some activities.” An extra bank holiday gives the UK a four-day weekend to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June.

Council allocates funding for platinum celebrations SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has allocated funding to more than 30 community events to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The money, which was approved as part of last year’s budget, will support street parties, picnics, garden parties, fun days and fetes over the long weekend from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5. Town and parish councils and community organisations put in bids to the council for the funding and were recommended for approval. The local successful bids are listed below. Cabinet member for public health and equality of opportunity, Cllr Franklin Owusu-Antwi, said: “The Jubilee is a remarkable milestone in the Queen’s historic reign and it is great to see so many people across South Gloucestershire wanting to celebrate it with their communities this summer. “I am delighted we are able to support so many local events like street and garden parties, fetes, picnics and festivals which will really bring people together, and I know many residents are looking forward to enjoying the festivities.”

AN ARTIFICIAL-grass pitch will hhh allow football enthusiasts to play in Longwell Green whatever the weather. The new 3G pitch – synthetic grass at the ideal height for playing football – has been installed in Shellards Road behind Longwell Green community centre. It has been funded by grants, including one from the Football Foundation, and is operated by Longwell Green Community Sports. Paul Griffin, general manager of Longwell Green football club, said the club’s 900 junior and 150 adult members would be a core user of the new pitch. He said: “We’re in the process of making sure as many people in the community are able to take advantage of the new pitch.” New mixed, walking football sessions for over 50s are starting at 10am on Wednesdays. They are aimed at all fitness levels

n MESSAGE FROM SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL

Working to improve our communities for the better I AM delighted that the council is continuing its long-standing partnership with the Voice magazines with a regular column, helping to bring the latest news to you on how we are working to improve our communities for the better. As we continue to progress out of the pandemic we return our focus solely towards our day-to-day activities, delivering on our key priorities of raising school standards, improving our local roads and public spaces and delivering you value for money – all whilst continuing to provide local leadership in our efforts to tackle the climate emergency.

Recently, the council has unveiled its plans for highways maintenance over the coming year, with many roads, paths and cycleways in communities near you set to be improved. This is part of our ongoing commitment to helping keep South Gloucestershire moving and is continuing our record £174 million investment into local highways since 2019. Later this summer, South Gloucestershire will also join communities across the country in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a major milestone in Her Majesty’s historic 70-year reign, and I am proud the council is helping to mark the occasion with

£50,000 in grants towards local celebrations in the district, such as street parties, festivals and other events. Finally, while this column will predominantly be for things going on in our community, the attention of many local people will undoubtedly be on the terrible events unfolding in the Ukraine. With millions of people fleeing the country, and many likely to find their way to the UK, the council is ready to step up and help, as we have done so for refugee families forced from their homes due to conflicts in the likes of Syria and Afghanistan. With the Government

Toby Savage, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council having now unveiled its plans for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, we stand ready to play our part and I am proud to know our residents will be ready to hold out the hand of friendship to any we help to resettle.

We’re the UK division of one of the leading leasing companies, managing over 1.7 million vehicles across 43 countries worldwide. We pride ourselves on our open culture, our commitment to employee development and our platinum corporate social responsibility status. The only thing we invest in as much as the future of mobility is our people who are at the heart of everything we do.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Warm words won’t fix the cost-of-living crisis EVERY month it seems to be getting worse. Gas and electric bills are up and for everyone who uses heating oil, that’s off the scale too. It’s rocketed 116 per cent. I expect you, like me, are looking at your smart meter thinking it didn’t used to be like that a few months ago – and as for petrol… Every month we also hear the Chancellor commenting. He is normally saying how he understands that life is tough for working families and pensioners. Really? Because as March turns to April and the cost of living crisis bites, and everything from the price of a stamp goes up, the Government has chosen this moment to deliberately introduce a series of measures that will make this crisis much, much worse. They say April is the cruellest month, and this spring the Chancellor will again force up taxes, painfully whacking up National Insurance contributions. He’s chosen a tax on workers’ income, not any of the other options

like buying and selling property portfolios or stocks and shares. Yet it’s not all doom and gloom on the economic front. There are plenty of great job vacancies in the region – many with good pay and prospects. One project I was excited to launch recently was aimed at West of England jobseekers in our burgeoning hospitality sector. Jobs Connect was commissioned by the West of England Combined Authority that I lead, and built by Bath-based software company Cognisess. It will connect local people to jobs with top hospitality and tourism employers in the region. Jobs Connect is a bit like a dating agency for jobs. Job seekers and businesses upload their profiles and the website plays matchmaker. Individuals can do personality tests to figure out their compatibility, and there are top tips to make sure you put your best side forward

Metro Mayor

Dan Norris

writes for the Voice and stand out from the crowd. In the forthcoming months I hope to expand this scheme as well as launch more skills support and set up a good employers’ charter. We can’t change Government policy – well not until the next General Election – nor can we change food prices locally. But we can make sure more people can get better paid jobs and opportunities. Warm words won’t solve the cost-of-living crisis, but it’s vital we make sure people in our region have the skills and opportunities to weather this storm.
