Have your say over mental health services PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are invited to give their views on the future of "talking therapies". Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group is seeking a new provider to support people with mental health problems and wants to hear from those who have used the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme since 2008 so it can ensure the service continues to meet their needs when it is recommissioned. A consultation is open until August 27 on the CCG website. Meanwhile the CCG has confirmed an extra £3.9m investment in mental health services in the current year to help meet growing demand across the area , especially for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

Trumpeting the joys of Hanham Hanham went really wild as crowds turned out for the first High Street summer fair complete with stalls and entertainment. PAGES 4 & 5

High St fair brings out the crowds

Rev Chris Spencer from Hanham Methodist Church and Cllr Ian Richardson from Hanham Parish Council volunteer as marshals

HANHAM'S first High Street summer fair has been declared a roaring success. Already organisers are talking of holding another next year and promising it will be even bigger and better. Buoyed by the sunny weather, families made their way through local streets in droves to reach the main road which had been closed to traffic. They were greeted by an array of stalls and entertainment as people of all ages joined in the fun and soaked up the community atmosphere. Traders put up colourful flags and balloons outside their shops which gave a real carnival atmosphere to proceedings. Stalls included Friends of Hanham Woods Academy, Christchurch Preschool, Prostrate Cancer Care, plants, face-painting, books and games, sweets, arts and crafts and glitter tattoos.

Anais, three, has her face painted by Chloe from Baker Street Nursery Among the food offerings were Caribbean food, barbecued burgers and hot dogs, pizza, popcorn and candy floss. There was a special performance by Hetti, a hessian elephant, and her keeper, Dr Annie M Sticke from Animystic Productions.

Further down the road there was a tea-cup fair ride for the younger ones and a Crazy Castle which proved popular with older children. Nicola Bartlett and Carl Smith at Eclectic Gift Shop dreamed up the idea of a summer fair after being inspired

Golden show is absolute dream Go go Joseph! Sir Bernard Lovell Academy’s summer production of the popular musical proved to be a huge success. It was staged by 30 students in Years 7, 8 and 9, who were involved as performers and backstage. All were taking part in their first SBL production at the secondary school in Oldland Common. Year 10 students helped out too by creating the multicoloured coat as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Three performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with Year 8 student Daniel in the title role, played to packed audiences of parents and friends. The show’s director Fran

Hanham man jailed for life over 'horrific' murder A HANHAM man has been jailed for life for the “truly horrific” murder of a Bristol businessman. Russell Oakey, who lived in the High Street, was one of two men convicted of murdering Andrew Groves at a house in Oakhanger Drive, Lawrence Weston, in September last year. Oakey and another man, Michael Dommett, from Shirehampton, subjected 47-year-old Mr Groves to a “prolonged beating” before setting the house on fire as they tried to destroy evidence of their crime, Avon and Somerset police

said. The blaze alerted neighbours, who called 999. When firefighters arrived, they found Mr Groves inside with multiple injuries. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. During the murder trial, Bristol Crown Court heard that the attack may have stemmed from a dispute after Mr Groves, who ran a garage called Andy’s Autos, withdrew an offer to buy a motorbike which had belonged to Dommett’s late father, who had been a friend of his.

Did you see car hit boy in Warmley? POLICE are appealing for help to trace a woman who may have witnessed a collision when a teenager was hit by a car in Warmley. It happened at 5.25pm on Thursday June 21 when a car turned into Station Road from the A420 London Road. A teenage pedestrian was involved in a low-speed collision with a car. Ambulance crews attended and the 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital and released the same day after treatment to cuts and bruises. The driver was spoken to by officers at the time. PC 2051 Russell Tucker said: "A lady stopped at the scene and spoke to the ambulance crew, however she did not leave her details. We think a cyclist may have also witnessed the incident. We’d really like to speak to them or anyone else who witnessed it." Anyone who can help is asked to get in touch through www. avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 869 of 21 June.

The killers, who were sentenced on July 26, had claimed Mr Groves was alive when they left the house but the claim was rejected by the jury. Oakey, 42, must serve a minimum of 18 years before he can be considered for release, while 38-year-old Dommett, who changed his plea to guilty during the course of the trial, must serve at least 16 years. Oakey was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice. After the case, senior investigating officer DI Lorna Dallimore said: “Andrew Groves was subjected to a truly horrific ordeal inside the house in Oakhanger Drive, with a fire deliberately started in an attempt to conceal evidence. “We were able to prove Michael Dommett, who had taken on the tenancy of this property from his late father, and Russell Oakey were solely responsible for Andrew’s death. “They concocted a series of lies to distance themselves from the scene of the crime and claimed they’d left Andrew at the property asleep. “Through a combination of forensic and DNA evidence, analysis of telephone data and ANPR cameras, we were able to expose these lies and prove they

Andrew Groves

were responsible for Andrew’s murder. “I’d like to thank Andrew’s family for their support of our investigation and I hope these convictions will help them move forward with their lives.” The family of Andrew Groves released a statement, which said: “The sentence these two men will get will never be enough for us as a family, for we will never see our dear Andrew again.” “Andrew was a kind and loving son, a truly beautiful person, and was loved by so many people. “He was a hard-working and devoted family man and his sudden death has been devastating to his wife, his son Lewis and daughter Molly.”

Latin prizes for children CHILDREN at St Augustine’s Primary in Downend took first and second place in a Latin drama competition in Bristol. For the contest, run by the Bristol Classics Hub and partnered by the Bristol Classical Association, plays had to be performed completely in Latin. St Augustine;s were the only state school to take part in the competition, which was held in the 1562 Theatre at Bristol Grammar School. Despite having started Latin only eight months ago, the pupils were able to show off many of the language skills and vocabulary they had learned. Their teacher, Rachael Swonnell, said: "Their dedication to practice reflects many of our core school values and they were super ambassadors for us. "Our whole school is tremendously proud of their success. Euge! (Hooray).”

Aerospace treat for pupils YOUNGSTERS from Beacon Rise Primary School are among pupils across South Gloucestershire enjoying educational visits at Aerospace Bristol to help support their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) learning. Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, councillor Toby Savage, joined pupils from the school in Hanham Road at their recent visit to the museum. The children got to see Concorde up close, as well as taking part in educational workshops and enjoying a number of the museum’s other exhibits, including aeroplanes, helicopters, and satellites. The council is funding school visits to Aerospace Bristol in Filton to help support STEM in South Gloucestershire. Each visit includes a practical STEM workshop aimed at inspiring young people about engineering.

Pupils from Beacon Rise Primary School are pictured at the Aerospace Museum with council leader Toby Savage Funding was secured in the budget in February to offer schools the opportunity to visit the attraction in order to support STEM learning across Key Stage 2 and 3. Councillor Savage said: "These trips give our young people the opportunity to develop STEM skills as well

as learn about the local and national significance of design, engineering and technology. "As the Aerospace museum celebrates its first full year of opening, it was great to meet the pupils from Beacon Rise Primary School who were visiting and see how inspired they were by all of the exhibits on display."

Delight as outdoor classroom opens AN OUTDOOR classroom at Samuel White's Infants School has been officially opened. The £20,000 learning resource was partly paid for by the school's Friends' group which included donations of £500 from Asda's green token scheme and £2,200 from the Co-op's community fundraising initiative. The other half came from funding bids made by the school. The classroom was officially opened during the school summer fair on July 6. Bryony Davis, chair of the Friends, said: "We paid around half of it and the rest came from grants. It's a fantastic resource that the children can use for not only shade at play time but also as a base for outside learning. It's also used by parents as a shelter if it's raining at pick up time! "We're hoping to add whiteboards and weather stations once we've done further fundraising. "We'd like to thank the community and local businesses for all their support for our fundraising during the last two years. We're really grateful to the community for helping us provide the classroom for the school."

The Friends invited Jo, the manager of the Co-op in Hanham's High Street, to cut the ribbon to declare the outdoor classroom officially open

n BOOK OF THE MONTH

I'm in the wrong story - get me out of here!

Fire Damage by Kate Medina THIS is the first volume in a series featuring army clinical psychologist Dr Jessie Flynn. Medina completed the MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and was mentored by Mo Hayder, and it shows. This is a really well-plotted book, and will keep you guessing to the end. There are two intertwining themes. Jessie is trying to help a four year old boy called Sami, who has been traumatised by the horrific burns his father sustained while on a tour of Afghanistan. He keeps on talking about the “Shadowman. One of her former patients, Captain Ben Callan, a military police officer, is investigating that same incident in Afghanistan, in which a soldier was killed. Is he really fit enough to return to work or is he still suffering from PTSD? Could these cases be linked? If so, in what ways?

August, 2018

Jessie is reluctant at first to work alongside Ben. She is attracted to him, but is afraid of commitment. She usually feels more comfortable with casual encounters. She is also afraid, as a professional psychologist, of facing her OCD. I have already read the second book in the series, which I also really enjoyed. Kate Medina is definitely one to watch.

South Gloucestershire Council first looked at introducing the Playing Out-style scheme back in 2014 but wanted to charge residents the cost of closing the road, which at the time was a whopping £140. The fee put off many parents and they urged the council to drop the charge, like neighbouring Bristol City Council does. The first event planned for the district had to be cancelled when families looking forward to closing Bromley Heath Avenue in Downend had hoped the council would waive the fee. But the residents' application was withdrawn after they were told they would have to cough up

the £140. Councillors went back to the drawing board and discussed the issue again. Now, four years later, the scheme is being re-launched in South Gloucestershire and applications are welcomed from residents although they only have until August 13 to submit forms. Play Street schemes enable

residents to apply for and manage a temporary road closure so children can play safely The aim is to make neighbourhoods more child friendly, bring people together and encourage physical activity. The initiative has been welcomed by health expert Helene Gibson who lives in Downend. Helene, a clinical lead in public health nursing, said the fees had previously made the scheme "prohibitive". "It's a fantastic opportunity for communities for children to experience free play in the way we used to as children. "The previous fees had put people off as it was a considerable amount of money and people would have had to fundraise to fund it. It was prohibitively expensive and stopped people from doing it. Hopefully people will take advantage of it but it's quite a tight time-frame for people to get in their applications, which is the only thing which is a bit worrying. "From my public health background, anything which encourages children and families to be active can only be positive." Any South Gloucestershire

resident interested in holding a Play Street event in their neighbourhood can apply by visiting www.southglos.gov.uk/ playstreets Residents of suitable streets are invited to submit applications by August 13, 2018 to hold Play Street sessions during the period of September 10 and December 31, 2018. The Play Street scheme is suitable for residential streets with low amounts of traffic such as cul-de-sacs and no through roads, minor roads serving culde-sacs and hamlets. Unsuitable streets include those on a bus route or any with scheduled road works. The similar scheme in Bristol called Playing Out has proved popular with residents saying it has helped bring communities closer together. Cabinet member for public health, Councillor Erica Williams, said: "Residents have said they would like to see street play schemes come to the area so we are delighted to be able to launch this pilot, with funding from South Glos Council’s public health department. "Research has found that street play schemes such as this can help reduce social isolation and also lessen health inequalities across the population. They also provide a really fun way for people to meet their neighbours whilst their children get some exercise, and hopefully help to develop stronger communities."

How to apply: South Gloucestershire residents who would like to hold a Play Street can make an application to the council for a Temporary Play Street Order (TPSO). For this pilot scheme, applications need to be received by August 13, 2018. Play Street sessions can be held on agreed dates and times: • for up to two hours • no more than once a week • outside of school time and in daylight hours • between September 10 and December 31, 2018. Applicants will also be required to consult (using approved template letters) with residents and local businesses prior to application. To apply visit www.southglos.gov.uk/playstreets. Children, mums, dads, grandparents and friends flocked to the school's summer fair where they enjoyed the sunshine and took part in games and activities. Local dance group 3D Dance kept the crowds entertained with energetic

performances and a variety of stalls meant there was plenty for visitors to do. The weather was almost too good, with drinks running out at one point because everyone was so thirsty! Bryony Davis, chair of the Friends of Samuel White's which organised the event, said the fair raised a grand total of £2,388.80 with another £400 to be added on from

"People remarked that it was a really great atmosphere and they really enjoyed themselves. The total we have raised this year is £10,999.13 and there is still more to come. Ofsted: Junior school requires improvement LEADERS at a school in Hanham have told parents a recent Ofsted report which says improvements need to be made "seems harsh". Following the departure of headteacher Mike Weenink who left in December to take up a post at another school, inspectors made a routine inspection at Hanham Abbots Junior School in June. Their report, released on July 23, has judged the school to "Require Improvement", saying that leaders and governors have failed to maintain the good outcomes seen at the last inspection three years ago. But in a letter to parents, executive headteacher Mike Coyne and chair of governors Carl Lander said: "We are disappointed by the outcome of the inspection as the judgements appear harsh in the context of the many positive statements in the report and the outcomes for pupils at the end of KS2 this year. "However, we accept the judgements as a measure since the last inspection in 2015 and as a platform for further improvement of the school." The school was judged to require improvement in three out of four categories effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment and outcomes for pupils. However, the school was thought to be 'Good' for the personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils. According to the report pupils' progress in recent years has been poor, although pupils are now making better progress, especially in Years 5 and 6. Able pupils have not made enough progress and least able children have not made the gains they are capable of in writing and maths. The quality of teaching, learning and assessment has not been good enough with teaching "inconsistent" and expectations not high enough. The report, however, did note that there is some high quality teaching at the school. Governors also came in for a hard time with inspectors saying they have not made sure the school has continued to provide a good quality of education since

the last inspection. "They have not held teachers and staff to close enough account for a decline in the quality of teaching and the weak progress made by pupils over time." The school's work in the field of personal development, behaviour and welfare was positive, with pupils growing in self confidence, enjoying school and eager to take on extra responsibilities. Most youngsters show a good attitude to learning, pay attention and listen well. They are polite, show respect for each other and their conduct around the school is good. Pupils say bullying is rare, which is supported by school records which show such incidents are carefully recorded and followed up. Pupils feel safe at the school and a majority of parents say their child is happy, safe and feels well looked after. Although the report was largely critical there were many statements by inspectors which suggested the school was already making progress. "The recent actions undertaken by leaders, including targeting additional interventions for vulnerable pupils, are making a difference to raising standards," Ofsted said. "The executive headteacher and senior leaders are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the school and are beginning to take appropriate action to make

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

improvements." It also said: "Pupils’ achievement in writing is improving strongly...Pupils currently in the school are making stronger progress in reading, writing and mathematics as a result of recent efforts to improve teaching. Work seen by inspectors supports the school’s information that pupils across the school are reaching higher standards and making better progress than in the recent past." Inspectors were also encouraging about a recent appointment: "The new inclusion manager has transformed provision for disadvantaged pupils and those who have SEN and/or disabilities." Ofsted has pinpointed areas

in which the school needs to work on, including improving the quality of teaching and ensuring it challenges all pupils, developing the curriculum and making sure governors have the skills and confidence to hold leaders to account. Mr Coyne and Mr Lander ended their letter to parents by saying the school was looking forwarded to the new head's arrival in September to help continue the improvements: "We are confident that we can meet these challenges. Federation and school leadership will be further strengthened by Matthew Norcott’s arrival as HAJ headteacher in September 2018 and both staff and governors are fully committed to the further improvement of Hanham Abbots Junior School." Mr Coyne told the Voice: "The report comments on Y6 data only - and while this is important, and a significantly improving picture, it is not the only measure by which a school should be judged. "The inspection has provided us with challenges. The report makes it clear that the school already understood – and had acted on – the key issues identified during the inspection. Improved end of key stage outcomes in 2018, particularly in English, demonstrate that the school has now fully adjusted to the requirements of this more challenging curriculum and outcomes are improving for children. "We look forward to a happy and successful year at Hanham Abbots in 2018-19."

n LETTERS Football club is community asset MY wife and I attended the presentation at the Greenbank Road sports pavilion (Hanham and Longwell Green Voice, May). The purpose of the meeting was to inform the local residents of a number of proposals regarding the playing field and facilities. I am not nor ever have been a member of AEK Boco. There appears to be a small group of people who are trying to advance their own interests by using anger and aggression. They do not appear to be willing to listen to the wishes or preferences of other people. There also seems to be a willingness to blame the football club for everything that happens. Whether that be the condition of the ground or general behaviour in the area. I have lived in my house backing on to Greenbank playing field since 1991. In that time I have seen it transformed from a

muddy field prone to flooding into an often used green space. It has moved from a dogs’ lavatory into a place that my children and their friends have spent many happy times. It is now a genuine asset to the area for the residents to enjoy as well as the sport that is provided by the football club. Many young people can be seen walking to and from the sports field in their kit as it is their local club and recreational area. My wife and I both felt unable to participate in any discussion at the pavilion. The meeting was well attended but from the outset we were made aware that there was a small group of people who had their own agenda. At the outset this group loudly demanded to know who was representing their interests. They expressed their disappointed that there was not a member of the council in attendance to represent their particular interests. One of their number opened his preamble by mentioning that he had already raised his complaints about the football club at the parish council

meeting the previous week. When told that this was not a decision making process but rather a presentation to educate and inform residents prior to decisions being made, they were quick to anger and the mood of the meeting became quite ugly. The presentation by a young man from Abacus was constantly interrupted and the presenter was accused of having premeditated plans. He could hardly explain the implication of various scenarios without tabling the options. As I was leaving the meeting early as the atmosphere had become unbearable, I had a conversation with a resident from the north boundary of the playing field. He was complaining that the field was muddy and that was because of over-use by AEK Boco. I had to tell him that I had walked from Kingswood via the top fields and then onto Greenbank the previous day. The top field was muddy up to my ankles whereas Greenbank merely squelched. The top field is fallow and is in far worse condition than Greenbank.

The resident mistakenly feels that AEK Boco have spoilt the field when in fact Greenbank is in a better condition than the council land that drains into it. All the gardens at the south edge of Greenbank have benefited from the drainage that AEK Boco have installed in the field. AEK Boco is a local asset that is more than a football club. At a time of council cutbacks Boco are providing a public open space that combines with a good quality sports facility. They are also involved in local charity work. At a time when we are trying to improve the health and fitness of our children Boco provides qualified coaching and good equipment. During my time at Samuel White's and Hanham Abbots, Boco, the club ran afterschool football sessions at no cost to the schools. I find it difficult to think of what more the football club could do for this community. Thomas McDermott Hanham resident

Council votes to ban plastics THE USE of disposable cups and plastic cultery is to be banned at council offices. South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet voted unanimously to end their use at a meeting on July 2. Councillors voted to adopt the approach across the council’s catering facilities at its Badminton Road and Broad Lane offices, along with Kingswood Civic Centre when facilities there become operational. The council agreed to source and provide suitable alternatives including reusable cups and wooden cutlery for staff and visitors not eating in the main restaurant area, and will move away from using single use disposable cups and plastic cutlery by the end of 2018. A further report considering the removal of single use plastics more generally across the council will be presented to a future cabinet meeting. Cabinet member for corporate resources, Cllr Rob Creer, said: "The removal of single use cups and plastic cutlery from our catering facilities is an important step forward in tackling the issue of unnecessary waste plastic and we’re pleased to be able to action this during ‘Plastic Free July’. "We are also widening the approach to look at the removal of single use plastics across the council more generally. This initiative will have a positive impact for the environment, and will also hopefully encourage other local businesses and organisations to follow our lead. "This important work builds on improvements made through our waste strategy which have led to increased recycling rates across South Gloucestershire."

Suffering from varicose veins or thread veins?

VARICOSE veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the UK’s adult population. They occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching, tiredness and discomfort. There are many myths surrounding thread veins and varicose veins. Such as you can get them from crossing your legs for long periods of time, however this is not true according to Mr Bill Neary a consultant vascular surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital. We spoke to Mr Neary in more depth around this subject. “You don’t get varicose veins from crossing your legs for long periods but they are more common in occupations where you are on your feet for long periods of time – retail staff and teachers do suffer more than most!” explains Mr Neary What are the symptoms and signs to look out for? At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur.

Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. This condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. Are varicose veins harmful to my health or can they be ignored? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread (broken) veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis.

Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Small veins underneath the skin, known as thread veins, spider veins or reticular veins, may become prominent due to a variety of different reasons. Are thread veins something I should be concerned about? They can rarely cause local symptoms of aching and throbbing but there most common concern to people is being unsightly. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. Therefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. Are women or men more likely to get these vascular problems? It can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more and have more hair, so the problem may be

hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. Can I avoid having surgery? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. This leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Are you interested in learning more about varicose veins or thread veins, the causes, symptoms and the available treatment options? Spire Bristol Hospital is hosting a free patient information evening this August for anyone considering treatment for varicose or thread veins. The evening will allow you the chance to listen to a talk from their consultant specialist and ask any questions, which you may have. To book your place please contact Spire Bristol Hospital on 0117 980 4080 or email info@ spirebristol.com.

Pamper evening raises funds for preschool LADIES have been spoiling themselves and helping raise money at the same time. They took part in a pamper evening hosted by KMC Preschool in Kingswood.

Have you ever wanted to ….

The charity-based preschool has been on a big fundraising campaign this year since announcing the opening of their second premises in Two Mile Hill Road. Local beauty therapists booked tables and offered treatments such as massages and facials, with most at reduced rates for sampler sessions. Items such as candles, jewellery and cakes were available to buy and mocktails and nibbles on offer to encourage guests to socialise. Claire Hickmans, from the preschool, said money raised would go towards much-needed equipment for the new premises which would complement their existing base at Kingswood Methodist Church in Grantham Road. "We have felt that this is the right time to expand our preschool and offer a more secure link with the near-by

other parents as you don’t get time to catch up properly on the school run." To find out more about KMC Preschool pleasemail kmcplaygroup@hotmail.com or call 961 3488.

Frankie Johns completes first challenge IT was a family affair when champion fundraiser Frankie Johns kicked off his latest challenge. The singer, whose real name is John Billitteri, has pledged to raise an ambitious £1 million for the charity Dementia UK. His campaign got off to a flying start after Frankie enlisted the help of family and close friends to take part in a sponsored 10k walk across the Downs. And although it took place on one of the hottest days of the year, the group managed the arduous trek with aplomb. Frankie, 59, has already raised thousands of pounds for Help for Heroes but following the death of his mother-in-law Barbara Fudge he decided to support a charity which helps families affected by dementia. Barbara, 81, who was from Barton Hill, had suffered from dementia and spent her last days at Saffron Gardens in Whitehall,

The 34-strong group are pictured raring to embark on the 10k charity walk where she received specialist help. Admiral nurses from Dementia UK gave her family support and advice to help them understand Barbara's illness and

offer practical solutions. Following Barbara's death on March 21 Frankie felt it was a fitting tribute to his beloved mother-in-law to raise money to help the charity continue its good work. Not one to shy away from a tough challenge, Frankie is aiming to collect one million pound coins through a series of events and activities. He will also draw attention to the cause by riding his bike through the streets of Bristol where people can throw money into a trailer attached to the back. The Downs walk was the campaign's launch event and, although the final figure is yet to be confirmed, it looks likely to hit £1,000. Frankie's niece, Gemma Saunders, persuaded her employer Barclays Bank to double any amount up to £1,000, giving them a grand total of at least £2,000. "The walk was fantastic and the weather was lovely. It wasn't a really long walk but the sun just seemed to drain us. We all managed it though. "There was 27 of us who took part as well as seven children. We started at 11am and got back just after one. It seemed to go on and on! "It was quite emotional as I did a speech before we started and talked about Barbara and the fact that she was the reason why we were all here. I also spoke afterwards and said how Barbara would have been really proud

with what we had achieved. "I feel really determined to reach £1m and when I make up my mind to do something, I usually do!" Frankie has embraced technology for the first time in his fundraising career after his daughters, Charmaine, 32, and Marisa, 30, told him the campaign would reach so many more people. He now has a Just Giving page - go to www. justgiving.com and search for Frankie Johns. People can also find out more about his fundraising events by visiting his Facebook page (John Billitteri). Frankie's next big fundraiser is a music charity night on Saturday September 1 at Kingswood Community Association from 8pm til late. Tickets cost £5 and are available from the office or lounge bar or from Frankie himself (07775 870129).

Cooking up a treat TALENTED local cooks have won awards for their sweet creations. Bev Smith, catering manager at SBL Academy, pictured, had two successes at the LACA (Lead Association for Catering in Education) awards. She earned a certificate of merit for her mango and white chocolate cheesecake and a bronze award for her indulgent chocolate truffles. Sharon Bond, catering supervisor at @ BathStudioSchool, came away from the same awards with a certificate for her superb World War One decorated cake. Both work for the Zest, the catering arm of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust. Operations manager Claire Mansri said: “This truly highlights the skills and ability within Zest catering and I am extremely proud that Bev an Sharon have been recognised for their talents.”

Zest provides catering services for most of the Trust’s schools, including several in Keynsham.

KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore has visited the new Bath Ales’ Hare Brewery in Warmley. The multi-million-pound brewhouse is one of the most technologically advanced brewing set-ups in the UK, with a capacity of over 50,000 brewers’ barrels. Operations manager Mick Stawniczy, who showed him round, said: “While we have got what is probably the most

state of the art equipment in the country here in the brewhouse, we also think it’s a beautiful thing to look at, so we were thrilled when Chris asked to be shown around to give it his seal of approval.” After a guided tour of the brewhouse and the bottling plant, Mr Skidmore was treated to a glass of Bath Ales’ Sulis lager, at the Brewery Tap in Hare House.

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI THE June meeting of Longwell Green WI saw members ‘getting physical’ as Philomena Connelly came to show us dance and chair exercises. The exercises are intended for those with low mobility and are performed sitting – but were no less strenuous for that! The July meeting will be less active as Paul Evans is coming to read poems and monologues. We will be hosting a cream tea on August 16 and a Harvest lunch in October. Members are looking forward to a trip to Bridgewater Carnival and Stoner Park for a Christmas Fair. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill HANHAM EVENING WI THE Season - no nothing to do with football – but the title of a very entertaining talk given by Judy Wray-Biss to our June meeting when she told us about “The Season in Bath”. The season, or more properly, the social season, refers to the annual period during the winter months in the early 18th century when it was customary for members of the social elite in society to hold balls, dinner parties and large charity events. It was also the appropriate time to be resident in the city rather than in the country, in order to attend such events. These were seen as very romantic times but, as we were told, the reality was much different and much less salubrious caused in large part by lack of personal and public hygiene. Judy explained how Beau Nash became the orchestrator of the season in 1704 and was known as the Master of Ceremonies. This was an unofficial position but nevertheless he had extensive influence in the city until his death in early 1761. He would meet new arrivals to Bath and judge whether they were suitable to join the select "company” of 500 to 600 people

who had pre-booked tables, match ladies with appropriate dancing partners at each ball, pay the musicians at such events, broker marriages, escort unaccompanied wives and regulate gambling. He was notable for encouraging a new informality in manners, breaking down the rigid barriers which had previously divided the nobility from the middle-class patrons of Bath, and even from the gentry. Some of his etiquette rules still exist today. This proved to be a thoroughly entertaining and informative evening which was enjoyed by everyone. Dianna Coles HANHAM AFTERNOON WI The Poppy Factory in Richmondon-Thames was the focus of our next event at the end of June when many of our members, together with some members of the Hanham Afternoon WI, enjoyed an uplifting experience. On arrival we were treated to a very welcome lunch followed by a moving talk from our guide. She told us about the history and objectives of the organisation explaining how poppies had become popular as an icon of public remembrance through the work of Anna Guerin of France and Monica Michael of the USA. They took lieutenant colonel John McCrae’s famous poem, "In Flanders Fields", and devised a practical way of raising vital funds for wartime charities. He was inspired to write his famous war poem after presiding over the funeral of a friend who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. The poem contains the famous lines, "If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields". The Poppy Factory is the country’s leading employment charity for veterans with health conditions or impairments. They work with businesses across the country to provide bespoke opportunities and ongoing employment support for hundreds of disabled veterans of all ages and from all services, helping to restore their financial independence through sustainable and rewarding work. The factory in Richmond employs around 30 disabled veterans who produce the poppies and wreaths for the Royal Family

and the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal – something they have been doing since they were founded in 1922. Following the talk, we were all invited to the factory where we were able to make our own poppies and watch a demonstration of wreath making. The visit ended with the customary visit to the gift shop followed by a walk along the banks of the Thames where we were able to sit and enjoy a very welcome ice cream. A busy few weeks culminated with members attending a tai chi workshop – devised to improve well-being - at the Hanham Community Centre. The session was given by local teacher Vicki Siggens who explained that tai chi combines deep breathing and relaxation with flowing movements. Originally developed as a martial art in 13th-century China, it is now practised around the world as a health-promoting exercise. The exercises involved two primary features: the first being a slow sequence of movements which emphasised a straight spine with controlled breathing and the second being different styles of "pushing hands". Repeated practice of these routines is said to retrain posture, encourage circulation throughout the body and maintain flexibility in the joints. Members did their best to follow the instructions and copy the movements shown by the instructor and afterwards agreed they felt better for the experience. Dianna Coles SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI At our June meeting our good friend Carol Coombs from Mangotsfield WI stood in at short notice as the spiritualist had to postpone her visit. Carol is an ambassador for Denman College in Oxfordshire, and she told us the history of Denman. It was bought by the WI for the members to take part in day and short stay courses, covering a huge variety of interests to suit everyone. We were all inspired to visit Denmans in the future. Our next trip to Chavenage House in Tetbury is in July and the details were discussed. Our July meeting saw a visit from a ukulele band called The Wick Strummers. They are made

up mainly of WI members who attended a ukulele workshop and then decided to meet up regularly to practice and perform. During the performance Jo told us the history of the ukulele and how to play it. Due to by-election voting our venue was in Shortwood Chapel, which came alive with the rousing sound of ukuleles and us singing along to the likes of “Summer Holiday” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. The evening was concluded with hilarious comedy sketches by our own members including The Old Bazaar in Cairo. What a fun evening!! The August meeting is a talk about “Backpacking at 65” and the spiritualist will visit us in September, all being well. We meet on the second Thursday in the month at 7.30 behind the chapel in Shortwood and would welcome new members. Lynne‘ MANGOTSFIELD WI WOW, I really enjoyed our Chocolate Night’. We really do enjoy a good talk, demo and samples. It is not difficult to please this WI! It is great that our planners manage to provide such a diverse and varied programme each year. On August 20 we will be enjoying our annual summer meeting. We will NOT be meeting in the hall on this occasion, but instead will meet at the Lamb Inn in Mangotsfield. Weather permitting we hope to enjoy a summer evening walk. Then there will be a quiz in the pub and some food and drinks if people wish. We are aiming for a slightly less formal evening with lots of social thrown in! Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, email mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com to contact the team directly. n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR July topic was the History of Parnalls of Yate. Initially shop fitters, in WW1 they began to manufacture aircraft in Park Row. Later the aircraft business expanded to Yate, close to the airfield used by the Royal Flying Corps. In the 1920s aircraft manufacture was centralised at Yate where numerous experimental designs were developed. In the 1930s mergers with other companies saw the move towards aircraft gun turrets that were fitted to Wellingtons and later, to Lancasters as well as subcontracting to other aircraft companies. From 1946 the firm diversified into domestic utility products and through many mergers and ownership changes became Creda, Indesit and now Whirlpool. The Station Road factory had become the largest domestic appliance manufacturer in the UK and one of the biggest tumble dryer plants in Europe. On June 23 we made a

visit to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens in Devon. We saw the blaze of flowering colours, the collection of over 1,000 magnificent trees, visited the countryside museum with traction engines, tractors, wagons, farm implements, old vehicles and a Victorian kitchen. We also enjoyed a tour of the estate grounds by narrow gauge railway. On August 7 our topic will be ‘Ration books to Rock ‘n Roll’. Surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the civic centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road. n FRYS BOWLING CLUB Thursday June 21: The first half of the league season came to an end last Thursday as Frys travelled to Knowle 'A'. A quick green made things tricky for both sides, but it was Knowle who got the better start, pulling out a lead. Rinks 1 and 2 were able to pull things back for Frys, with rink 3 continuing to lose shots regularly. Frys gradually pulled the deficit back, taking the game into the last end only trailing by 2 shots. Frys were unable to pick up the required shots, only gaining 1 shot, to fall 50-51 taking 4 points from the match. Frys are currently 8th in the table on 33 points. Scores: Rink 1:25-17; Rink 2: 17-10; Rink 3: 8-24: Frys 50-51 Knowle 'A' (4-6). Tuesday June 26: The first round of the Somerset County Bowls Association Turnbull Cup saw Frys travel to Nailsea for the first game

between the sides for many years. A hot night made conditions challenging and it was the home side taking an early advantage on 3 of the 4 rinks. The night would not get much better for Frys although they were able to gain some shots, they fell to a 59-105 defeat. Thursday June 28: The second half of the league season saw Frys hop over the bypass to play Keynsham 'A'. Keynsham jumped to the early lead, with rink 3 pulling out a big lead in the first few ends. As the game went on, Frys pulled back shots on all rinks, with rink 1 jumping ahead. Frys held a good lead, before a loose final end on rink 1 saw the gap halved giving Keynsham hope. Rinks 2 and 3 were able to keep their final ends tight and come away with a 51-47 win taking 8 points from the encounter. Scores: Rink 1: 23-14; Rink 2: 15-10; Rink 3: 13-23; Frys 51-47 Keynsham 'A' (8-2).

Thursday July 5: Second placed Page Park 'A' travelled to Frys last Thursday night. Page Park got the better start, but rink 1 soon put Frys back in the game pulling out a good lead. Rink 2 and 3 were also able to pull back shots helping Frys take the lead in the game. Frys lost a few of shots on rinks 1 and 2 in the closing ends, leaving rink 3 to finish off a 3 shot lead. A single on the penultimate end of rink 3 saw Frys hold a 4 shot lead. When Frys number took the jack to edge of ditch, it left Page Park little chance to get the shots needed and Frys won 48-43 picking up 6 points from the night. Scores: Rink 1: 25-8; Rink 2: 14-21; Rink 3: 9-14; Frys 48-43 Page Park 'A' (6-4). Thursday July 12: Avonmouth was the location for Frys latest game of the league season. A very slow green made the early ends difficult as players took time to adjust. Avonmouth got the better start, but it was

not long before Frys closed the gap. The game building up to the most exciting finish of year. Rink 1 were the first to finish, with Frys tying the game on their penultimate end. On the final, both clubs got bowls close enough to force a measure. The measure came down to a matter of millimetres, but it was Frys having the closer bowl taking the rink win. Rink 2 opened up a 4 shots lead with 2 ends remaining, as rink 3 was again tied by Frys on their penultimate end. This left Frys with a 5 shot lead with 3 ends remaining. Avonmouth closed up the game as the skip on rink 2 was able to move the jack a few inches to pick up 3 shots, closing the rink to a single shot and the game to 2 shots. A stunning bowl from Frys number 2 on rink 3 took the jack away from Avonmouth. Frys numbers 1 and 3 were able to get 3 bowls on the jack. Both rinks were able to hold on giving Frys a 10 point win with all rinks winning in the 46-40

Thursday July 19: The 13th game of the Bristol and District League season saw Frys host Knowle 'B'. Knowle got the better start, but Frys were able to pull back with all close. Rink 1 was tied by Knowle on the final end giving both teams 1 point. Rink 3 were able to pull out a lead, giving Frys a 6 shot lead with one end left to play. A poor end from Frys saw Knowle hold 5 shots with Knowle having the last bowl. Knowle's skip fell short with the final giving Frys a 49-48 win taking 7 points to sit 6th in the table moving 23 points clear of the relegation zone with 5 games remaining. Scores: Rink 1: 13-13; Rink 2: 13-20; Rink 3: 2315; Frys 49-48 Knowle 'B' (7-3). Tuesday July 17: The last 16 of the Somerset Bowls Association Wedmore Plate saw Frys host a first known meeting with Yatton. This visitors got the better start, but Frys were able to pull the game back and eventually taking a slender lead which swap hands before the end. A close finish ensued, and Yatton held the advantage of winning the extra end, Frys held a 2 shot lead with one end to play. Yatton were able to take shot away from Frys to hold 3, with one bowl left for each team. Frys skip could only knock up a Frys bowls to tie the game, but with Yatton winning the extra end, it would be Yatton advancing to the quarter finals.

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

Our carrots have been doing nicely, except… THE extremely dry weather during June and July has been difficult for all so it seems. Not only have crops suffered under persistent daily temperatures in the mid to high twenties and beyond with seedlings wilting or growth curtailed but our wildlife friends seem to be finding things difficult as well. The first indication of this is not only the hard-baked soil that makes it impossible for these creatures to forage for worms and slugs as these seem to have gone deep underground to find moisture. This became evident just a few weeks ago when our early potatoes were being dug; the soil was dry and not a worm in sight. So it seems the likes of foxes and badgers that rely on these for their diet, we think are turning to alternative foods, such as our carrots. First off, our Square Foot Garden that we reported on last month had in two of its 12inch spaces nice little rows of young carrots until we found them one evening all but dug over, strangely enough other crops in this bed had not been touched. A predator cat perhaps we thought could be the culprit, as a new one had been seen patrolling the plots recently. Then another plot holder informed us theirs had suffered the same consequences, then another and then another, to date nine of us have had their carrots ruined. Even a raised bed that was heavily netted to keep un-wanted visitors out had been assaulted. Someone on social media suggested the

offender could be a rat or a mole that was tunnelling, but one crop that was lost was in a half plastic barrel that was off the ground. We still don’t know the answer and perhaps never will, but underlying reasons for this plight indicate the lack of water. Pond levels that previously provided watering-holes have dropped making it difficult for animals to reach so additional small temporary ponds have been created in an effort to help their predicament. Hopefully they’ll ignore our carrots soon as a way of thanks!

Just a thought, but… Water it seems, we all take for granted. We just turn on the tap and out it comes. But what if it didn’t? We’re fortunate enough that this probably won’t happen even if it is rationed to a certain extent, but should our reservoirs empty of water, it’s gone, end of story. So could we as gardeners do more to help reduce our use from the mains supply? The average shed or small

greenhouse could easily collect 500 litres of water from steady rainfall in a very short time, a small drop in comparison as to what is used daily in our local area it could be argued. But multiply that over say 50 allotments or our gardens at home and it starts to become a much bigger drop! Time to over-winter. With lots of crops now bearing the results of our efforts, right now may not seem the time to be thinking about next spring, but actually some seeds should be propagated soon for over-wintering. For example, Durham Early spring cabbage sown in trays now and transplanted into pots will be ready for planting out late autumn. These will survive the coldest months, but beware, keep these under a net as pigeons will feast on them in winter. Last year we tried Hi Keeper onions from seed sown into 12 cell trays, up to five seeds per cell during the first week of September. By the end of October our seedlings were large enough to handle and were lifted from their cells without separating but planted as a clump simply using a dibber to make a large enough hole and dropping them in. We gave them some winter protection using semi-circular tubes to make a tunnel and covered this with

thermal net which is sold in our allotment shop. From our pack of seeds 80 seeds costing just over £2 we achieved a yield of almost 100% of excellent medium sized onions. Our Summer Show. On Sunday 19th August our Summer Show returns, opening from 10.00am to 4.00pm at our St. Aidan’s Allotments in Nicholas Lane, St George. Our plot holders will be competing in a range of vegetables, cut flowers, domestic and handicraft sections. Outside children will be able to win prizes at our stalls and visit the animal corner and if you need a little light refreshment, cream teas and burgers will be on sale to enjoy whilst listening to our live band. Call in and see us, entry is free. And if you’ve ever thought of having your own allotment it would be a great time to find out, come and have a look around, you’ll be most welcome. n VETS' ADVICE

Should I be cleaning my dog’s ears? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Dr Stuart Garde BVSc MRCVS Highcroft Veterinary Group

IDEALLY you should check your dog’s ears weekly. Inside the ear canal the conditions are dark, warm and moist and therefore an ideal place for bugs to grow, and ear infections can develop quickly. If your dog’s ears are red, itchy, smelly or squelchy then it’s time to see the vet. But if they are just waxy, then giving them a good clean can prevent an infection from developing. Dogs that love to swim, have floppy ears or suffer with allergies will benefit from regular ear cleaning. So how do we do it? You will need ear cleaner (available from your vet practice), some damp cotton wool and possibly someone to help you. If your dog has been prescribed ear drops then have those handy as well. 1. Flip your dog’s ear over their head so you can see the inside of their ear clearly. 2. Gently wipe away any dirt or wax you can see with a piece of damp cotton wool.

3. Look for the entrance to the ear canal which sits near the cheek just inside a firm ridge of cartilage. 4. insert the nozzle of the ear cleaner into the ear canal and squeeze gently until the cleaner overflows around the nozzle and spills out of the ear. Don’t try to push the nozzle in too far as it can be uncomfortable for your dog. 5. Flip their ear back to its normal position and massage the base of the ear to allow the cleaner to get to work in the ear canal. Most dogs enjoy this bit, but it can also cause them to shake their head and send the cleaner flying out so keep your mouth closed and avoid your white furniture! If there’s any excess ear cleaner still in the canal then wipe it away with a piece of damp cotton wool. If you’ve seen your vet and need to administer ear drops, then apply them as per instructions on the medication after you’ve

finished cleaning. Follow the same procedure for the second ear. IMPORTANT NOTES • Do not use cotton buds as there is a risk of putting them too far in to the ear canal thus causing damage. • If you notice any unusual discharge then make sure you see your vet as there may be more than just ear wax. • If your dog is not happy with you cleaning their ears then don’t struggle as you can cause harm to both yourselves and your dog. There are always qualified nurses in practices that are willing and able to help you clean your dogs’ ears. • If you would like more advice on cleaning your dog’s ears, speak to your vet practice or call Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660 and ask to speak to one of our Veterinary Nurses.
