'Stadium' wins approval RESIDENTS have lost their fight to stop what has been dubbed a “mini stadium” being built in Hanham. Football club AEK Boco finally won permission to extend their facilities following a tense council meeting. The club, based at Greenbank Road, was given the go-ahead to put up four 18.2m floodlights and build two 50-space spectator stands. But plans to erect a 1.8m fence were rejected with the club being told any barrier around the pitch must be no higher than 1.2m. Initially South Gloucestershire Council's development control committee threw out the plans after listening to the views of local residents who say they feared parking problems, glare from floodlights and an increase in anti-social behaviour. This was despite a report by council officer Patrick Jackson who recommended councillors support the plans. This meant the proposals then had to be considered by the authority's spatial planning committee to have the final say. The seven-strong committee, which met on July 22, heard

Lightning hits Hanham house THESE photos show the damage caused to a house in Hanham after a lightning bolt struck the property. The lightning, which struck during a storm in the early hours of Tuesday July 23, caused an explosion when it hit the home's chimney stack. Fire crews were called to the property, on the corner of High Street and Creswicke Avenue, and had to remove the chimney pot. A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue said: "At 12.17am one crew from Kingswood fire station, along with the turntable ladder from Temple, were called to a property that had been struck by lightning on the High Street in Hanham. "On arrival, firefighters used the turntable ladder and small gear to remove the lose chimney pot from the roof. "They also inspected the property using a thermal imaging camera to check there was no further damage.” Storms swept across the South West with many people kept awake watching the drama unfold.

Plans to convert stable block

Betsy is BMX world champion

A RESIDENT in Longwell Green wants to convert a stable block into a home with parking - even though the land is in the green belt. Plans have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for permission for the work at Cleeves Court in Court Farm Road. One letter of objection said there had been several back garden developments along Court Farm Road which have been allowed to sprout up, even though councillors have said they would oppose such building work. A council spokesperson confirmed the land was within the green belt and said : “The green belt is a planning consideration and the assessment of such will be set out in the officer report. “The decision is anticipated to be September 3, however this date is to be confirmed.”

Congratulations to Betsy Bax, a Hanham Woods Academy student, who has just been crowned BMX world champion. Betsy, 13, from Kingswood, took the title at a competition held in Zolder, Belgium on July 24. More details in next month's Hanham and Longwell Green Voice.

John and Heather become honorary aldermen FORMER long-serving Hanham ward councillors John and Heather Goddard have been made honorary aldermen. The husband and wife, who represented the Conservative party, have been given the honour in recognition of eminent services to South Gloucestershire Council. They were among 12 former South Glos councillors who received the accolade at a special ceremony ahead of a full council meeting on July 17. Council leader and leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Toby Savage, paid tribute to John and Heather. He said: “Having lived in Hanham for 55 years, John and Heather Goddard have been stalwarts of the community, with more than a century of public service between them, being elected to South Gloucestershire Council in 2003, and Heather also serving on Kingswood

Borough Council for 17 years prior to that. “Both served with distinction in positions of responsibility on the council; John as the cabinet member for Corporate Resources, and Heather as the cabinet member for Strategic Partnerships, European Affairs and External Affairs, and later for Communities, also chairing the Health and Wellbeing Board and Safer and Stronger Partnership. “Alongside our current vice chair, Cllr June Bamford, John and Heather worked outstandingly as the local team in Hanham, giving their time to a wide range of local organisations, with Heather and John’s legacy being a regenerated High Street, an active Traders and Community Partnership and a vibrant youth club. “They reluctantly made the decision to stand down at the last local elections, with the

AEK Boco plans get go-ahead From Page 1 from solicitor Tracey Merrett as well from Hanham ward councillors June Bamford and Brenda Langley and parish councillor Bernard Jackson, who all backed residents saying the plans would urbanise the area and impact on the lives of people living nearby. Cllr Jackson told the committee: “The recreation ground has been there for some time and it's been enjoyed by local residents and their families. “Boco Football Club are taking it over and trying to turn this amenity into a ministadium. “Local families have said enough is enough.” The committee heard that that the club intends to use the floodlights to provide two extra games a week, one between 6.30pm and 10.30pm on Wednesdays and one between 2.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturdays. But the floodlights would have to be switched off no later than 9.30pm during the sevenmonth bat season, from April to October, and as early as 7.30pm in September and October. Cllr Judy Adams (Conservative, Emersons Green) said she felt the fence was too high and put forward a condition that the height of the fence should be reduced to 1.2m. Cllr Roger Avenin (Conservative, Bradley Stoke South) told the committee he was concerned about the loss of a public open space with Cllr Katie Cooper (Labour, Staple Hill and Mangotsfield) saying she was worried about the impact on one of the residents who would be living just 15m from one of the floodlights. Cllr Avenin said: “I’m not really happy with this, I must admit. It seems to be a unilateral declaration of independence in declaring this a football pitch, restricting the open space for residents. “We really have to take account of the strength of

opposition on this. I shall be voting against it.” Chairman Cllr Colin Hunt (Conservative, Emersons Green) then said: “I have to remind you that it is a football pitch at the moment.” When people cried out “But it's not a stadium”, Cllr Hunt said: “I hardly think a 50-seater stand is a stadium”. Towards the end of the meeting Cllr Mike Drew (Lib Dem, Yate North) said he felt if the committee rejected the plans, Boco would win on appeal and then the authority would lose the power to place any conditions on the scheme. He was supported by Cllr Hunt who said: “We would lose all control”. The committee finally voted in favour of the plans by five votes to two, with councillors Avenin and Cooper voting against the scheme. The club had wanted to build a 1.8m high fence, but the decision still enables it to meet FA requirements for promotion to the next tier of the English non-league for both its men’s and women’s teams. It also means the club can enter youth sides in the Under18s Somerset Floodlit League, so its youth players can transition to senior football without leaving the club. Following the meeting one resident told the Voice: “The club's long term plan is football most nights a week. It's all part of a bigger plan. The next thing is that they will want to turn the floodlights on for training, they won't be content with this.” John Winter, AEK Boco chairman, said: “Following

A stand similar to those AEK Boco wants to install at the ground in Greenbank Road years of hard work from our management committee, we are pleased to be able to confirm that our application has been approved subject to conditions. “This will now enable our men’s team to progress to the Toolstation Western league and our ladies’ team to progress through their football pyramid system. Most importantly our junior section will now have the opportunity of playing midweek floodlit football. “Being able to provide this level of football for our junior players means that they do not have to leave our club as has been the case for the last four to five years. "Now we will be able to provide the transition from junior football to senior football at our club.

“We are well aware of the concerns of the local residents with regards to light spill but thanks to the expertise of our consultants Grassroots Power they were able to reduce the overall impact of the application. “As was the case 10 years ago when we sought planning permission for the new clubhouse, we have continued to prove that our much respected community club will continue to grow and provide a safe and healthy environment for the people of Hanham and surrounding area.” The final hurdle will be when South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the site, decides whether to grant 'landlord's permission' to the club. A decision is expected in the next few weeks.

Oldland Common student wins award A STUDENT from Oldland Common has won a national prize for his TV and film work. Bath Studio School student Sam Pope was named BTEC creative media student of the year 2019 and received his gold award at a ceremony at Central Hall in Westminster from financial journalist and television presenter Steph McGovern. Parents and teachers accompanied award winners at the event, which was organised by Pearson BTEC to highlight vocational talent. Members of Parliament and celebrities, including Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock, were also there to hear the students’ success stories and present awards. BTECs are recognised qualifications which are heavily in demand from employers and universities. Sam, 17, who is on the autism spectrum, has been at the Bath school, which is part of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust,

for three years. He plans to go to university to study film next year. It is a future that Sam would not have thought possible when he was younger. “I was bottom of every class I was in and had an awful time at school before I came to The Bath Studio School,” he said. Head of sixth form at The Bath Studio School Max Weedon said: “I am delighted that Sam has exceeded all previous expectations while studying the TV & Film pathway at a Wellsway Multi Academy Trust school. “Sam has overcome many difficulties to thrive in his subject areas and his success is a vindication of our unique curriculum design, which puts the student at the heart of an experiential and industryfocused learning process. By treating the learner as the creative talent, for example by giving them the autonomy to direct their own movies, we find that students like Sam have

Sam Pope at the award ceremony with its host Steph McGovern and Shane Mann, one of the judges been encouraged to unlock their potential, harnessing their innate enthusiasm and motivation to create valuable intellectual property such as original films.

“We are so proud and happy for Sam that his hard work and talent has been recognised by both the professional film industry and by the awarding body at BTEC.”

n NEWS A MUM who gave birth to her three children at Cossham Hospital's midwife-led centre has welcomed the news it will be business as usual from the autumn. Lauren Pinkett started an online petition last October after the centre temporarily closed due to an "unprecedented" number of women needing inductions and a shortage of midwives. But now North Bristol NHS Trust has confirmed the major recruitment drive has been successful and Cossham Birth Centre will reopen from October 21. Lauren, whose online petition attracted more than 4,000 names, has been involved in discussions about the future of the unit and kept informed of developments, including being told about its reopening in person. Lauren said: “Following my petition I was asked to be part of Cossham Stakeholders Group as a ‘critical friend’ of the hospital and have been involved in discussions keeping up to date with proposals and the recruitment of midwives. “Being part of this group has been significantly valuable, as I have been able to understand the internal logistics and gain a full understanding of the closure. Being invited to Cossham to be given the exciting news in person has made feel very overwhelmed

Delight as Cossham Birth Centre reopening confirmed

Campaigner Lauren Pinkett, pictured with her children with the outcome.” The centre will operate under an “open on arrival” model as well as the associated homebirth service. This means the existing homebirth staffing rota would provide low-risk women assessed as suitable the opportunity give birth either at Cossham or at home. If a Cossham birth was appropriate the midwife would meet the woman at the birth centre. After the birth, the mum and baby would return home and the midwives in the homebirth team would then ensure it is

ready for the next birth. The birth centre would be operational in the daytime for community midwifery clinics. However, the birth centre would be closed during the night unless a birth is taking place as no other midwifery services run overnight. Under this model, which applies at day or night, if the home birth team is occupied with a birth then other mothers in labour would be offered Mendip Birth Centre, based at Southmead Hospital, as an alternative. Lauren, who describes her

three births at Cossham as “faultless”, said: “This will be beneficial for all involved. I am thrilled for all expectant parents who still wish to birth at Cossham and the midwives who will be able to return and work back in the maternity unit. It will take some time to be fully established, but this is a great stepping stone and in keeping Kingswood’s heritage.” North Bristol NHS Trust director of Nursing and Quality, Helen Blanchard, said: “We’ve always been committed to reopening Cossham Birth Centre and we’re looking forward to offering, where we can, women the option of choosing to have their baby there. We’re sorry some women haven’t been able to give birth there these past few months but this has always been about putting all of our services on a safe and sustainable footing for the long term.” Lauren lived in Honey Hill, Kingswood, when she gave birth to her first child five years ago. Despite moving to Southwick, on the outskirts of Bath, she returned to Cossham to have her second and third children.

Rogue trader is found guilty of fraud A ROGUE trader whose victims included a 99-year-old Hanham woman has been found guilty of fraud. Brett Henson, 47, of Park Road, Kingswood, repeatedly cold called at the homes of elderly and vulnerable residents in Hanham and Kingswood and falsely claimed to have carried out work. Henson appeared before Bristol Magistrates’ Court in July and pleaded not guilty. But magistrates heard evidence from Henson’s victims, including the daughter of a 99-year-old victim who has since passed away. Magistrates found Henson guilty of fraud and sentenced him to an eight-week curfew order between 7pm and 7am. He was also ordered to pay £250 in costs and £50 compensation to each of three of his victims, along with an additional victim surcharge of £85. South Gloucestershire Council trading standards team brought the case to court after receiving a number of complaints about

Henson’s doorstep activities in the Hanham and Kingswood areas. Henson had initially started legitimately cleaning windows as well as cleaning and repairing gutters and facias. However, some of his customers became suspicious when he would return to their houses requesting further payment for work he had carried out while they were out. Henson returned repeatedly to one Kingswood property claiming to have carried out work on gutters and requesting payment. On one occasion, during late 2016, he claimed he had replaced an end cap on the rear guttering of the property and wanted payment, but his victim inspected it and was certain that no work had been done. On another occasion in February 2018 Henson was caught on a hidden camera returning to the Hanham home of a 99-yearold victim, whose suspicions he had aroused by taking a £20 payment from her for work he claimed he had carried out. Henson argued that he had made verbal

agreements with his customers to do work on their windows and gutters and that they were mistaken about the work not being agreed, or being done by him. Magistrates rejected Henson’s arguments and convicted him on the basis that he had committed fraud in relation to three of his victims. South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for communities, Cllr Rachael Hunt, said: “We strongly advise residents not to deal with doorstep traders and to only make agreements with reputable traders, never paying any money up front. “We will not tolerate dishonest traders targeting elderly and vulnerable residents in our communities and we will work with the Police to identify and prosecute these individuals. I urge people to report any concerns they have so they can be properly investigated and offenders can be brought to justice.” Anyone who is suspicious about doorstep traders can report it on 03454 04 05 06.

Kingswood Library shelves find new home at school REDUNDANT shelving from Kingswood Library has gone to a good home – Hanham Woods Academy. The racks were surplus to requirement when the library recently relocated to the Civic Centre. But they have been put to excellent use by donating them to the academy which was desperate for more shelving space following a revamp of their own library. The academy received eight sets of shelves, a spinner and two mobile units which has allowed the school to double the size of the library and display books which had previously been in storage. Lis Jardine, school librarian, said: “It has been amazing to watch the library grow from a room with a few books in it to a real working library, where students can easily access books

that appeal to them. Literacy is a big drive across the academy this year for all age groups, so this resource will play a crucial part of that drive.” Cllr Erica Williams, South Gloucestershire Council's cabinet member for Schools, Skills and Employment, said: “Following the relocation of Kingswood Library to the Civic Centre, we were left with a number of shelving units which were unsuitable for the modern, new space. “We were happy to donate these to Hanham Woods Academy who were refitting their school library so they can carryon providing benefit in the local community. Our top priority as an administration is to improve school standards, investing in young people to improve outcomes and help them thrive, and it’s fantastic that we can re-use these resources to support

that goal.” To mark the expansion of the library, the academy staged a week long ‘Literacy Live!’ event which included the visit of three authors, Rayan Phillips, Eve Griffiths and Cavan Scott, a number one best-selling author and comic writer for both adults

and children. Hanham-based Cavan has written for a large number of high-profile series including Doctor Who and Blake’s 7. The academy also hosted a book fair and set an extreme reading challenge.

Community cafe on the move again A COMMUNITY cafe set up to combat loneliness in Longwell Green has found a new home. The cafe is part of a growing number set up by St George resident Gillian Flower aided by her daughter Michelle Ford, from Hanham. It was originally based at Longwell Green Community Centre, moving to All Saints United Church, opposite Aldi, in March but this venue has proved too small. The cafe is now closed until Tuesday August 20 when it will

have a regular Tuesday slot at North Common Village Hall, 16 Millers Drive, North Common, BS30 8YH from 12-3pm. It's business as usual at the existing cafes which run on Mondays and Thursdays at Speedwell and Kingswood as these are unaffected. Due to demand, the mum and daughter team are set to open a new weekly cafe at St George Community Centre, Church Road, St George, BS5 8AA, from Wednesday September 4, also from 12 to 3pm.

Gillian set up Bristol Community Friendship Club in 2016 after she was touched by a TV show about loneliness. Its Facebook group now has more than 800 members. There is no age barrier to attend the cafes and parents are welcome to bring their children. Volunteers are desperately needed for the North Common and St George cafes. Pupils show their gardening skills GREEN-fingered schoolchildren have been showcasing their gardening skills at a new housing development in Hanham. Beacon Rise Primary School’s gardening club teamed up with housebuilder Bellway to plant a variety of plants around the Abbotscroft development off Greenbank Road. The pupils arrived wellequipped with their trowels and supplies of bedding plants ready to get to work. Bellway has recently donated £200 to the school, which will go towards a chainsaw artist who will turn one of their oldest decaying trees into an eyecatching sculpture. Bellway's Rachel Way said: “It was a pleasure to welcome pupils from Beacon Rise Primary School’s gardening club to our Abbotscroft development. “They have done an excellent job and their efforts will go a long way towards making the community greener and help to

Julie Ells, from Bellway, with Beacon Rise Primary School’s gardening club, Inaya CheethamBah, Lola Barrett, Charlie Bawdon, Olivia Bawdon, Poppie Proud, Bella Worgan and Niamh Rogers encourage wildlife on site.” Chris Thomas, headteacher of Beacon Rise Primary School, said: “Being at the centre of the community is something we are particularly proud of.

“To be able to join with Bellway as they invest in our neighbourhood and encourage the children from our gardening club to be actively involved is just fantastic.

“We are truly proud to begin our working partnership with Bellway in this way and look forward to doing more with them in the future.”

Council tax debt arrests

Lilly Thomas, 10, with big brother Drew, who had cancer ten years ago, had her hair cut to be sent to be made into a wig by the Little Princess Trust

Family's pride as Lilly braves chop A SCHOOLGIRL has cut her hair off to help a charity which supports children with cancer on the 10th anniversary of her brother's diagnosis with the disease. Lilly Thomas, 10, decided to grow her hair for the Little Princess Trust after watching YouTube videos of other girls doing the same. The charity turns hair into wigs for children who have lost theirs during treatment for cancer. Lilly, a pupil at Hanham Abbots Junior School, was aware of cancer as her brother Drew was diagnosed with nonHodgkin's lymphoma on July 24, 2019, when he was just five years old. Drew, a student at Hanham Woods Academy, received a bone marrow transplant the following

April and has been clear of the disease ever since. Mum Rachel Mountford said: “Lilly was watching videos online and said to me, 'Mum, I really want to grow my hair and give it to a girl who hasn't got any hair'.” They read up on the Little Princess Trust and discovered the minimum length of hair which could be donated was seven inches. Lilly grew her blonde locks to nine inches and then announced she was ready for the chop. The duo went to Joseph Hannah hair salon in Hanham where stylist Shannon cut Lilly's hair into a bob, saving her shorn locks for the charity. Rachel said: “Lilly insisted she wanted it cut on a particular day but she didn't realise it was 10 years since her brother was diagnosed with cancer.

“It's nice that she is helping other children whose families are going what we went through. “When Drew was diagnosed I was heavily pregnant with Lilly. My partner Spencer was at the hospital with Drew and I was at another hospital giving birth to Lilly. I felt it wasn't really happening to us. "I felt any minute someone was going to walk in and say 'We've made a mistake and he's fine'.” Rachel said Lilly adores her brother and is delighted she is helping others in the same position as Drew was in. “Lilly absolutely loves her new hair and keeps touching it. She bagged up all her old hair, put it in a box and took it to the post office herself. "We're all really proud of her.”

A COUPLE have been ordered to pay more than £4,000 and handed a 12-week suspended sentence for refusing to pay council tax on a house they owned in Kingswood between 2014 and 2018. Rachel and Paul Wells, now living in Wales, were arrested at their home in Treorchy and taken to Bristol Magistrates Court, ten months after their first hearing in July 2018. At the original hearing, Mrs Wells told the court that the property in Kingswood was undergoing completion and should be sold within four to five weeks. In August 2018 the debt was still due and the couple failed to attend court. This led to a further adjournment. When it came to the September hearing, Mr and Mrs Wells again failed to attend. South Gloucestershire Council requested an application for a warrant without bail which was granted by magistrates. Further investigations found the couple had moved to Wales. The couple were told to pay £4,331.66 and given a 12-week suspended sentence. South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for corporate resources, Cllr Ben Burton, said: “This couple were given every opportunity to pay the council tax they owed but still tried to avoid it at all costs. The vast majority of hard working people pay their council tax on time.”

Trashtag! Children Stores trial recycling make mark on park of food packaging

Pupils have won praise for take a pride in their area PUPILS at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School have been busy making sure Kingswood Park is spick and span. The Year 4 youngsters began a tidy-up campaign by clearing their own school but it generated so much interest they decided to start on the local area. The group was spotted in action by Kingswood campaigner and chairman of Friends of Kingswood Park, Jim Whittaker, who was so impressed he wrote to the team. He told them: “It was great to see your happy band of litter pickers from Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Kingswood Park this morning. You are spot on with your activity, this will develop a sense of pride in our green spaces in the future generation, well done!”

The litterpick trip was set up after Our Lady of Lourdes received equipment from South Gloucestershire Council as part of a schools' initiative called #Trashtag which encourages young people to become involved in de-littering their community. Year 4 teacher Cat Gill, who has been supporting the litterpicking team, said the children chose Kingswood Park and the cemetery next door as their mission: “The children have not stopped talking about it since. They loved it and have a deep pride in and respect for our local area. It’s fantastic to see and I am very proud of them.” The school is now looking to form a partnership with Friends of Kingswood Park and carry out further litterpicks as well as jobs such as planting and painting.

LOCAL Tesco stores are taking part in a trial scheme to recycle food packaging that can’t be collected at the kerbside. The supermarkets at Keynsham, Eastville and Staple Hill are among ten in the Bristol and Swindon area that are taking part in the pilot.. Customers can return everything from pet food pouches to shopping bags and crisp packets to a collection booth in the supermarket. The packaging will be sent to a company called Recycling Technologies to turn it into a material that can then be used to manufacture new plastic. Tescoe says it is a significant step in its efforts to make all its packaging recyclable, creating a closed loop – preventing packaging from going to waste. Tesco’s director of quality, Sarah Bradbury said: “Reducing and recycling plastics is such an important issue for us, for customers and for the future of our planet. That’s why we are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging in our stores and have committed that all remaining packaging will be

recyclable by 2025. “Our trial with Recycling Technologies will make even more of our packaging recyclable and help us reach our target. This technology could be the final piece of the jigsaw for the UK plastic recycling industry.” Recycling Technologies’ chief executive, Adrian Griffiths said: “We are delighted to be working with Tesco to help its customers recycle more of their household plastic waste. Using our specialist ‘feedstock’ recycling process we keep more plastic waste in the economy and out of landfill and our oceans. This initiative with Tesco is designed to show there are solutions to recover this material. Our goal is to double the UK’s capacity to recycle plastic waste by 2027.” Eighty three per cent of all Tesco’s packaging is currently recyclable. Should this softplastics collection be rolled out to all Tesco stores, the store chain estimates it will be possible to recycle around 90 per cent of Tesco’s own-label packaging – the equivalent of 65,000 additional tonnes of plastic being put to good use every year.

You can return: Crisp, chocolate, rice cake packets Sweets and biscuit wrappers Pet food, baby food pouches Drink pouches (e.g. Caprisun) Yogurt tubes and pots Cling film, multi-pack film, film lids Any plastic bag such as fruit & veg, bread, tissue

Mama Bear's celebrates

Teacher and pupil take part in Transplant Games A PUPIL and teacher from the same school have taken part in a charity event after undergoing organ transplants. Beacon Rise Primary School's Elodie Gray, aged five, and teacher Garreth Rhodes both had their lives saved by pioneering surgery. And now they have competed in the British Transplant Games, an annual event which raises awareness of organ donation. The event, which took place in Newport from July 25-28, saw around 1,000 transplant survivors come together to compete in more than 23 sports. Elodie, who lives in Kingswood, underwent a heart transplant when she was just seven months' old at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopthy at the age of

Elodie at the Games

Teacher Garreth Rhodes and pupil Elodie Gray three months, Elodie was rushed into intensive care at Bristol Children's Hospital and placed on the heart transplant list. Her surgery has transformed her life and Elodie now wants to raise awareness of organ donation so other people can be helped just like she was. Garreth, who teaches at Beacon Rise, had a liver transplant in 2016, following a diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in the early 2000s. Garreth said: “PSC is an incurable disease that slowly damages the liver to a point where it can no longer function, and it was roughly 12 years between diagnosis and my liver beginning to fail.

“I was placed on the transplant waiting list and, after one false start, received my new liver after just three months of waiting. From that point it was like getting a whole new lease of life, and I have subsequently competed in two previous transplant games and will be competing in the World Transplant Games later in August. “I have been one of the very lucky ones, and I am immensely grateful to my donor family for saying yes.” The games, organised on behalf of charity Transplant Sport, help increase awareness of the charity Anthony Nolan and its need for blood stem cells and bone marrow donation.

The main firms involved were Langridge's of Two Mile Hill Road (using the Unity brand and later renamed Fantasie Foundations) and David Williams of Downend Road. It was in 1921 that Langridge's moved to a larger factory in Two Mile Hill Road. This site was enlarged three times in the next few years, before new premises were opened in Waters Road, where manufacture was to remain until closure in 2002. Ofsted: Hillside Day Nursery is Good YOUNGSTERS from Hillside Day Nursery are celebrating after getting the seal of approval from education watchdog Ofsted. Inspector Dominique Allotey judged the nursery, based in the grounds of John Cabot Academy, to be Good in four of the five categories, with an Outstanding rating given for personal development, behaviour and welfare. Ms Allotey said she was particularly impressed with the outdoor learning on offer. She said: “Staff plan a highly stimulating range of outdoor opportunities for children in the extremely well-resourced and attractive garden. This motivates all children in their play and learning outdoors, especially those children who prefer to learn outdoors.” The inspector also praised partnerships with parents, the high-quality toys on offer and the opportunities for regular training

Staff members Chelsea Walker (left) and Rosie Matthews (right) pictured with some of the pre-school children for staff, who she says know the children well and are very good role models. The Good rating maintains the previous judgement after an inspection in 2016, with the bonus of one Outstanding

category. When considering the children's personal development, behaviour and welfare, Ms Allotey said: “Children behave exceptionally well. Staff find inspiring ways to give children experiences that enhance their understanding of others and the wider community. For example, they regularly do anonymous 'random acts of kindness' for

people less fortunate than themselves. This teaches children excellent values.” She added that “Children form very caring relationships and bonds with their key person and other staff. Children settle very quickly and they are extremely happy at the nursery.” Children make good progress in their learning and development at Hillside, the report said and they are motivated and keen to learn with good concentration and listening skills. Hillside Day Nursery also operates from a bungalow in the nearby grounds of the Kingswood Foundation Estate which was also rated Good in its inspection in September 2017. Sarah Cook and Donna Pepper, who own and manage the nursery, said: “We are so proud of our team, our children and our amazing little nurseries! “We can’t thank our parents and carers enough for all the support they give us. We, along with our team, have worked incredibly hard to maintain the nursery’s Good grading.”

Coffee lounge opens at the Civic Centre A COFFEE lounge has officially opened at Kingswood Civic Centre. The Red Cherry Coffee Lounge is now open to customers for drinks and cake. The new facility marks the final element of a three-year project to improve public-facing services for the area. The project has also seen the library service relocate to the Civic Centre; upgrades to the council chamber; major improvements to the One Stop Shop; and the leasing out of office space to partner organisations such as the Avon & Wiltshire Partnership. The project will see savings to the council’s annual budget of around £430,000, thanks in part to rental income from the office space and avoiding running costs for the old library building.

The coffee lounge, which is next to the library on the ground floor, will be run by Integra, the council’s trading arm, providing a service to staff and visitors to the centre and anyone else locally who wants to pop in for refreshments. Opening the new facility has created 10 jobs and any profits made will be reinvested into council budgets. The lounge was formally opened on Friday July 26 by council leader Cllr Toby Savage and cabinet member for corporate resources, Cllr Ben Burton. Cllr Burton said: “We are really pleased to be able to complete this project, which has been part of our long-term vision and commitment to delivering the best value for money for residents, as well as the best possible services to the local community.

Councillors Toby Savage, Jon Hunt, Erica Williams and Ben Burton at the official opening of Kingswood's Red Cherry Coffee Lounge “The coffee lounge is the final piece of the jigsaw and really is the Red Cherry on the top of the hard work that has gone into the project. “This council, like all others, has had to manage increasing demand for our services at a time of reducing budgets and so our watch words have been doing more with less. What this project has shown, among many others,

however, is that spending less doesn’t have to mean reducing services. Tough financial times can lead to innovation, creativity and the opportunity to make improvements. By rationalising our estate we are able to save money and by generating rental income from our surplus office space we are able to invest our own resources into important frontline services.”

Message from the Chair, Councillor

Steve Hicks

Keeping our local community safer Pedestrian safety is being improved in Hanham with new planters in Memorial Road outside of The Co-operative Food. The planters are located across the wide pavement area where vehicles regularly park causing a danger to pedestrians. The original idea came from discussions between Hanham Abbots Parish Councillors and store colleagues after a car used in a robbery parked directly outside the door of the shop to make for a quick getaway. Denise Church, Manager at The Co-operative Food, in Memorial Road, said: “Getting the support of the local parish councilors has meant a lot to us here. We are part of the regional co-operative - Southern Co-op - so have community values built into everything we do. “The Parish Council’s help in installing the planters will hopefully help to make the local area safer in so many ways and they will also look beautiful. What more could we ask for!” A donation of £1,545 was made by Southern Co-op to purchase three large planters and Hanham Abbots Parish Council has taken on responsibility for ongoing maintenance. A great example of what can be achieved by working together to make the community a safer place. The planters are now in situ and have been filled with flowers.

Following local council elections in May, the following new councillors were elected to Hanham Abbots Parish Council:June Bamford, West Ward I have lived in Hanham for 46 years and represented the residents on South Gloucestershire Council since 2003. I am a Hanham and Hanham Abbots parish councillor. I was Chair of the Planning Committee on SGC and am now Vice-Chair of the Authority. I am keen to ensure that we protect our valued Green Belt and build homes on suitable brownfield sites and which respect the characteristics of the area.

Richard Boissevain, East Ward

I moved to the Parish four years ago with my wife and family. We live in Hanham Court, which is at the heart of the Hanham Abbots Conservation Area. Before, we lived in Bristol for 20 years and brought up three wonderful daughters. I have spent the past 30 years building businesses, wholesale, retail and manufacture. I have a lot of experience working with people (young and old) and getting things done. My wife and I are passionate gardeners (we need to be!) and take our responsibilities, as custodians of Hanham Court, with its wonderful gardens and barns, very seriously. We’ve been grateful for the warm welcome we have received from everyone we have met in the parish and as your new councillor, I want to listen, learn and make a positive difference for the residents of Hanham Abbots.

Brenda Langley, East Ward

I originally came from London but I have lived in Hanham for the past 18 years. I am self-employed as a financial advisor. I have served as a parish councillor for the past 4 years on Hanham Parish Council, Chair of Finance during the past year. I have been involved in the Hanham Business and Community Partnership and am a member of many local community groups. I have recently been elected as a South Gloucestershire Councillor for the Hanham Ward. I look forward to helping to deliver a safer and cleaner environment for all the residents of Hanham.

Ian Richardson, West Ward

I am a self-employed businessman providing Bobsleigh related events and services. I have spent my working life in the Defence Service, for 24 years in the Royal Airforce before working for the Ministry of Defence. I have lived in Hanham for 16 years. I am highly involved in the local community, being a member of the Hanham Business and Community Partnership and the Community Forum and am the Co-ordinator for the Hanham Annual Remembrance Service. I am also the Chair of Hanham Parish Council and was recently elected to Hanham Abbots Parish Council, where I hope to enhance community cohesion.

David Smith, West Ward

I have lived in the Hanham area for over thirty years and recently retired. I work as a volunteer at the SS Great Britain; am a trustee for two charities and an active member at St Georges Church, Hanham Abbots. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me to be on the Parish Council and will do all I can to help protect and enhance our Green Belt, conservation area and open spaces.

South Glos Parents and Carers was nominated for the Excellence in Parent Carer Participation award as part of charity Contact’s ‘Together at 40’ celebrations. The group was presented with the award by Minister for Children and Families Nadhim Zahawi during a ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster and hosted by Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter Jane Garvey. SGPC is the parent carer forum for South Gloucestershire, representing families of children and young people, aged up to 25, with additional needs. Founded 10 years ago from a meeting of eight parents in a coffee shop, the group now has more than 1,150 members and 40 volunteers, providing a range of services. The first SGPC community base opened in Kingswood in 2009 and its head office is in Poole Court, Yate. In London to receive the award were SGPC members Rachel Trueman and Leonie Pollinger, who both live in Emersons Green. Rachel, an SGPC founder and its chief

WELFARE checks on dementia sufferers in South Gloucestershire could be carried out by Amazon’s Alexa and neighbours “popping in”, it has been claimed. Councillors said they were “horrified” at the possibility, which they discovered during a monthly budget monitoring task group meeting on adult social care. The council insists it is exploring assistive technology such as Amazon’s voice-activated virtual assistant to provide better care and that it would run alongside, not replace, traditional support such as carers’ visits. But scrutiny commission co-chairman Ian Boulton said: “We were given a couple of

Leonie Pollinger and Rachel Trueman of South Glos Parents and Carers receive their award from Children's Minister Nadhim Zahawi executive, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award. Our passion and our drive are to see service improvements for our community and making sure that we are fully involved in the process. “Over the past 10 years we have been working really hard to build trust and relationships with education, health and

social care services, with the sole aim of working co-productively together in mutual understanding towards positive change. We have had successes but there is still a lot of work to be done. “Our community is our motivation. Without our community giving their time and energy attending our events, completing our surveys and giving us their views, winning this award would not have been possible.” Julie Bye, a parent who nominated the group, said: “They are a force for change, but also hugely supportive. They run a counselling service and training for parent carers to empower them to get jobs.” South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage and MPs Luke Hall and Chris Skidmore also attended the ceremony. Any parent carer of a child with additional needs in South Glos, diagnosed or otherwise, is welcome to join the SGPC community and access the services and support offered, which include low-cost counselling, workshops, accessible stay and play, drop-in support sessions, support groups, written guides and a closed Facebook group. For more information visit www.sglospc. org.uk.

Worries over ‘Alexa home care’ examples of how social services will develop and we were given a real example of how technology can be used.I have no issue with that but the example we were given was someone with early-stage dementia who it was suggested should have a daily welfare check. The solution for that was to have an Alexa put in and for a neighbour to be popping in.Those were the words — ‘to have a neighbour popping in’. “If that was your parent or grandparent who had early-stage dementia, that the social

services review depended on a neighbour popping in, I would be disappointed.” A council spokesman said: “Using digital assistants is not something we are offering, but with further research and with the full understanding of individuals and their families, and the recommendation of professionals such as occupational therapists, we believe they may have a role to play in the care people need. There are a host of new developments that can help those with increasingly complex care needs.”

Memories of happy days at Rodway MANGOTSFIELD School extended a warm welcome to ex-pupils from its predecessor school during an emotional reunion. More than 70 Old Rodwegians from Rodway School met old friends and caught up during the event on July 13. All the visitors had been pupils at the predecessor school, so would all have attended Rodway School before 1982, when Mangotsfield School first came into being as the result of a merger between Chase Boys’ and Rodway School. Rodway School had originally been founded as Rodway

Some of the Old Rodwegians who came back to the classroom for a reunion event at Mangotsfield School Technical High School in 1957. The walk down memory lane consisted of a tour round the school and then a perusal of the school's small archive. Current head teacher David Spence said: “The main hall and staircase are probably the most obvious examples from that

era, and it was very interesting to hear tales from yesteryear where health and safety, risk assessments and safeguarding were most definitely not order of the day! The uniform even consisted of a straw boater in the early days. “A huge thanks to Julie Scull

for organising, and to Anne Wells, ex-member of staff, both former Rodway School pupils, for conducting some of the tours and supporting what was a really successful morning. We hope to create an alumni network and to put on further events at the school.”

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR July topic was ‘A Tribute to Bristol’s Buses’. The Bristol Omnibus Company was the dominant bus operator in Bristol, and was one of the oldest bus companies in the United Kingdom. It ran buses over a wide area of Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and neighbouring counties until operations ceased in 1987. In 1875 George White formed the Bristol Tramways Company and began a horse drawn service. In 1895, they began to operate electric trams, and in 1906 introduced motor buses and rapid expansion followed. In 1908 it began the manufacture of its own buses and soon began to sell buses to other operators. For 75 years, Bristol buses were widely used in the United Kingdom, and were also exported to many countries. From 1987 the company name gradually fell out of use and eventually became First Bus. There will be no meeting in August. Our topic on September

3 will be ‘Chocolate Dinosaurs’. Hugh and Mike will tell us how chocolate is made, with reference to J.S Frys. Surely unmissable! We are running a trip from Kingswood to visit the Newport Medieval Boat on Friday August 23. Anyone interested in joining us should contact Dennis Noble on 0117 9834 692. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Space research is vital for our future

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

S Space Minister, I was honoured last month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, marking half a century since the historic launch and moon landing which captured the imagination of people all around the world in 1969. The events of that July have inspired generation after generation and the effects will reverberate for years to come. For decades now, we have been able to reap the benefits from the research needed to explore space, from laser eye surgery to portable X-ray machines. We can continue to build on our efforts in space research and technology development, for example by using satellites to aid the observation of the changes happening to our planet. This will be vital to help us deal with the challenges we face right here on Earth.

This is why last month I was also very proud to announce that the UK Space Agency and NASA have agreed to enhance our cooperation and will work together on joint scientific projects and future lunar missions. This new partnership between the UK and the USA, along with our continued commitment to the European Space Agency as we leave the EU, will allow the UK to embrace and lead in the new Space Age and could mean we are one step closer to seeing a Briton walk on the Moon. As the local MP, I was also delighted to see that the Jodrell Bank Observatory here in the UK recently became our country’s 32nd site to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The Observatory is home to the Lovell Telescope, the world’s thirdlargest steerable radio telescope named after founder and famous South Gloucestershire resident Sir

Quarry Court

Bernard Lovell. The world-renowned scientist and physicist was born and raised in Oldland Common and educated at Kingswood Grammar School, now King’s Oak Academy, and went on to receive a first-class degree from the University of Bristol. I am proud of this addition to the prestigious UNESCO list, in recognition of our local astronomer’s pioneering work and research, his life and achievements an example of what South Gloucestershire children can aspire to. Space will continue to inspire and amaze all of us for years to come, and as a country I know we will continue to build on our strengths to ensure space remains a key priority in the future. n Since he wrote this column, Mr Skidmore has been given a different job by the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson: Minister for Health and Social Care.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We're keeping our cool ... WITH the schools finishing for the holidays and the sun shining, summer is in full swing. It’s important to remember that for those working during this time, in particular those working in uniform, the heat is more than a little uncomfortable. Regardless of this, I know officers will continue to keep our communities safe and feeling safe to ensure you are able to enjoy all that summer brings. In Avon and Somerset, we’re lucky enough to have many wonderful events take place over the summer. At the start of July, the biggest music festival in the world came to our doorstep and over 200,000 people descended on Worthy Farm for Glastonbury 2019. I was pleased to hear that crime levels at Glastonbury have remained low with 118 crimes reported this year compared to 202 in 2017, a reduction of 41.6%. I was also delighted that St

Paul’s Carnival was back again for another year as it’s a fantastic celebration of people, diversity, culture, community and music. The event proves what great things can happen when the whole city pulls together, and is testament to the community. Most recently, we celebrated Bristol Pride and officers proudly donned rainbow colours and marched alongside revellers at the annual parade. As with the other two events mentioned, Pride brings local people together to celebrate our differences and allows us to share the important message that hate crimes will not be tolerated. Being targeted because of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other reason is unacceptable. It's been over three months since Operation Remedy started, The operation, which focuses on knife crime, burglary and drugs in our area, has got off to a flying

start and has made notable improvements in tacking these issues. Since April, there have been 450 related offences; 33 warrants executed, 23 of which resulted in a positive outcome; a total of 287 stop searches; and 414 reports of crime from both the public and police officers. Various stolen items have also been seized, recovered and returned to the original owners, and a number of drugs have been seized including approximately 645 cannabis plants, 12 grams of Amphetamine and 1 kilogram of cocaine. I know people will be pleased with the police’s increased focus on these issues. There’s still plenty of work to be done but I am delighted with the positive results that the team have achieved so far. We will continue to send a loud and clear message to criminals that coming into our villages, towns and cities to

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens commit crimes is not an option. Finally,, I mentioned a new initiative called the ‘Chat Bench’ that hopes to tackle isolation within the senior community. I’m delighted to read that Avon and Somerset Police’s initiative has gained real traction and inspired communities as far as the USA to start their own ‘Chat Bench’ to tackle loneliness.

Summer festivals – essential tips for staying healthy 0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

THE weather may be unpredictable, and the ticket prices eye-watering but attending a summer music festival to enjoy your fav band is a cultural rite of passage. Here are a few healthy tips from our pharmacy team to ensure a bad back,trench-foot, sunburn, hayfever and stomach upset do not ruin your time! • Care for your back- A sturdy and weatherproof bag for clothes and larger items alongside a smaller bag for daytime is a good idea. Consider walking distances and travel plan when deciding what to take with you. • Take care of your feet - If the weather disappoints you may find yourself standing soaked in a muddy dirt-laden field. The risk of nail and foot infections makes the trusty welly boot, not

only a festival fashion statement but a wise footwear choice. Comfortable and dry must win the day. •P rotect your skin and eyes– Sun protection, moisturisers and sunglasses will protect against the sun rays to that cause sunburn, skin and eye damage. Confused about which cream to buy? Come and chat with us. • Cleaning wipes are a godsend, (preferably recyclable ones). You will find them excellent for both time and convenience. Wear UV protecting eyeshades. •D on’t let hay fever symptoms ruin your time.We can offer effective non-expensive remedies • Take care of your stomachFestival food can be a shock to your system so be prepared. Alongside drinking plenty of

water, take probiotics ahead of and during your trip to protect your tummy. Anti-diarrhoea and oral rehydration tablets are great to carry along just in case. • Please do not buy or take any ‘energy’ or ‘relaxing’ tablets offered while away. Your life and health may be put at risk otherwise. Increasingly festivals have also been associated with outbreaks of meningitis and cases of measles. Why not take a few minutes to check your vaccinations are all up to date? We can help so just call us on 0800 7723575. Ellacombe Pharmacy is always ready to help with any queries about medicines, vaccinations and your health. Speak with us today.

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI THE ladies of our group enjoyed and extremely entertaining and interesting talk about life as a body guard of the Queen. Shaun McCormack explained the history of the Queen's Body Guard, which began with Henry Tudor in 1487. Henry crossed the country from Wales into England recruiting his army as he journeyed through the countryside. On reaching Lincolnshire he was confronted by Richard 111 (last of the Plantagenets) and the Battle of Bosworth was fought with Henry's army of body guards. Henry claimed the throne and became Henry VII (first Tudor king). As successive kings and queens have ruled so the uniform of the Body Guard has evolved. Shaun explained the intricate detail of the uniform and the significance of each of the emblems embroidered on it. The uniform is something most people have seen in either a photograph or during a real life Royal event. The scarlet red material, black and gold braiding is something we tend to view as very colourful and decorative, knowing it has been worn for centuries but without giving any thought to the historical detail behind any of it. Each body guard has been a member of one of the three armed forces for at least 22 years, prior to being selected for this most prestigious role. They attend many Royal annual events, such as Trooping the Colour and many unusual one

off commitments. One of the more bizarre occasions they are required to attend on an annual basis is searching the cellars of the Houses of Parliament, prior to the State Opening. The Queen's body guards are searching the building to check it has not been infiltrated by a second Guy Fawkes type character. On confirming the “All Clear” to Black Rod the State Opening of Parliament can proceed. In more recent times H. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, lay in State in Westminster Hall and the Queen's Body Guard took part in the 24/7 vigil, with one guard stood on each corner of the plinth where the coffin had been placed. Shaun went on to say that his life as one of the Queen's body guards has been an honour and privilege which he would not have missed for anything. Our next meeting is on August 12 (second Monday of the month) gathering at Hanham Community Centre when we shall leave for our Summertime Afternoon Tea (now fully booked). Ann Baulch

notice to astound us with her talk entitled “The Flying Doctors”. No, this wasn’t some story from the Australian outback but a tale of her career as a specialist nurse flying around the world to help repatriate people and accompany them home after being taken ill whilst holidaying in foreign parts, usually under the terms of their holiday insurance. Jane regaled us with her exploits flying in private jets to all points of the compass. These jets were often owned by the rich and famous who rent them out when not in use. The most well-known of these celebrities were probably Miss “Big Spender” Shirley Bassey and master spy “007”, none other than Sean Connery who would often leave them a bottle of bubbly to enjoy – not shaken or stirred, just chilled. Trips to bring patients home saw her visit such far flung places as Australia, the USA, Turkey, Greece, the Canary Islands and many, many visits to Benidorm. Ailments varied from road traffic accidents and broken limbs to heart attacks and serious infections. Her description of the conditions in some of the foreign hospitals she visited certainly made one appreciate the NHS. She experienced some hair-raising moments such as parts falling off of planes, engine fires, being snow bound in Washington and dealing with gun toting airport security agents in Egypt. None of this seemed to phase her but one thing she did emphasise was the need to have sufficient travel insurance as you never know when you might need to call on the flying doctors for assistance. Members were extremely grateful to Jane for stepping in at the last minute and gave a welldeserved vote of thanks. Next month there is no meeting but the branch is going on a trip Chavenage the home the Warleggans as featured in the television series Poldark. No doubt members will be on the lookout Aidan Turner – Ross Poldark himself. Dianna Coles

about the 'Colourful Personal Life of Queen Victoria'. Susan became interested in Queen Victoria when she found a picture of her in the attic and has written three books about Victoria’s life. She spoke to us about Victoria’s childhood up to when she succeeded to the throne at 18 and was extremely interesting and informative; her passion for Queen Victoria was apparent. We learnt that Victoria was one of four babies born in 1819 hoping to become the heir to the throne because of the lack of an heir following the death of Princess Charlotte – this was known as the Royal Race for the British Throne. She became the heir because her father – Prince Edward, Duke of Kent – was the senior son. She was named Alexandrina Victoria but chose the name Victoria when she became Queen. She had a very lonely childhood. Her father died when she was eight-months-old and her mother isolated her from all but her close circle. Her only friend was her half-sister, Theodora, who was sent away to marry when Victoria was eight. It was very interesting to learn how her childhood shaped the monarch she was to become – a monarch who formed a model of constitutional monarchy which is still followed today. There is no meeting in August but we are having Pimms and Puds at Redfield Edge Community Centre and in September we will learn about Hives and Herbals. Future events include a harvest supper and a murder mystery evening with trips to Wilton, New Forest and Poole and Blenheim Palace. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking Group, a drama group, a skittles group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for tea and chat. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. Izzie,11, sets her sights on tennis success SHE'S not even 5ft tall but Hanham's Isabelle Britton is already a formidable presence on the tennis court. For the 11-year-old, whose heroes are Andy Murray and Johanna Konta, is already representing her country at international tennis. Isabelle, or Izzie as she's known to her family and friends, has recently returned from London after she was selected by the Lawn Tennis Association to represent GB in the U12s team. Along with five other girls and six boys, Isabelle played daily singles and doubles matches in the week-long Queenswood International Tournament where GB finished fourth against eight countries including the Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Holland and Sweden. It appears Isabelle's sporting prowess runs in the family – her dad Neil was a tennis coach and mum Claire represented the county in the hurdles and 100m sprint. Sports mad Izzie, who has just left Beacon Rise primary, started playing tennis with her dad at the council courts in Kingswood Park at the age of four. Two years later she joined Woodlands Tennis Club in Hanham and began to take the game seriously. Neil, who lives with Claire and their son Archie, aged seven, said: “I decided I didn't want to be her coach any more, I wanted to be her dad, so she started being coached at Woodlands Tennis Club in Hanham when she was six. I could see she had

potential. “She progressed from there to county level and won numerous county championships and she's currently the 12 and under county champion.” When Isabelle hit 10, she was picked for regional training, playing alongside the best young players in the south west. It was during her Friday morning training at Bath University, a sporting centre of excellence, she was picked to go to national camps to enable her to hone her skills as a potential future professional. Neil said: “The last one she attended was in La Manga in Spain – the lucky devil. She said there was a football team training there but she didn't know which one it was!” Isabelle, who celebrated her 11th birthday on June 28, first represented Great Britain last December and has now made her second appearance. Neil has no doubt that Isabelle will end up with a

career in sport and, although she would love to become a tennis professional, she is realistic and knows very few make it. But she's definitely on the right track and has even won a sports scholarship to study at Bath University in September where she will be able to hone her racket skills alongside studying for her GCSEs. “It's very difficult to balance her education and tennis but from September both will be structured as one, said Neil. “She's nervous but she's looking forward to the challenge. “Izzie plays between 20 and 22 hours a week of tennis, so she puts a lot of work in. Primarily she has the goal of becoming a professional tennis player but she is very realistic and know the odds are stacked against her. She loves sports so much that her career and life will definitely be in a sporting environment.” Neil said special thanks must go to Isabelle's two coaches – Pete Evans, of Woodlands Tennis

Club, and Martin Bray at David Lloyd in Long Ashton. “They both look after her – they've been brilliant,” Neil said. Rachel Leonard, from Beacon Rise, said: “It goes without saying that the school is extremely proud of Isabelle and her achievements. She has been delight to teach and has been a hardworking and friendly pupil.” Neil said he would love to find a sponsor for his daughter as the costs involved can mount up. “When we take her to a national tournament, we have to take time off work, pay for the tournament, hotel, food and so on. You're looking at about £500 for each tournament. Soon Izzie will be playing Tennis Europe so will have to start travelling abroad then it will be double the cost. For a normal family like we are, it's ridiculously expensive.” If any individual or company would like to find out more about sponsoring Isabelle, you can email Neil on neilbritton@live. co.uk

n SPORT MARCUS Trescothick, Keynsham’s most famous sporting son, is to retire from cricket at the end of the season. The 43-year-old featured in 76 Tests for England and was a central figure in the 2005 Ashes victory over Australia. And the former pupil of Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common is within touching distance of scoring 20,000 first class runs for Somerset after making his county debut all the way back in 1993. Cricket is a game of statistics so here are a couple more ... 5,825 Test runs at an average of 43.79 and 4,335 one-day international runs - more than any other England opener. For Somerset, there is the small matter of more than 800 appearances and 28,000 runs in all formats as well as 52 firstclass centuries. And this exceptional career all began at Keynsham Cricket Club where he followed in the footsteps of father Martyn, a highly respected club player who made two appearances for

Trescothick set to bow out Somerset 2nds. One man who remembers very clearly just how good Marcus was from the very start is former Keynsham captain John Courtney who, at the age of 62, has just helped England Over 60s defeat their Australian counterparts. He said: “Marcus must have been eight or nine when he started coming down the ground with Martyn for Saturday matches, and he would spend hour after hour in the nets, getting us all to bowl at him.” It was not too long before the prodigiously talented Marcus made a memorable first team debut at the age of only 14. John added: “I ran him out for nought without facing a ball! He was carrying a bit of extra weight back then and I hadn’t factored that into the situation, but he obviously went on to better things very soon after.” Young Marcus also worked

for John who, back then, ran the Classic Bat Company shop on Keynsham High Street. He said: “Marcus would come in after school to help out, work on our bats, dispatch goods and sell stuff out of the showroom. “He scored something like 3,000 runs over the season as a 14-year-old, and I remember that all of us at the shop had a bet amongst ourselves about how many Tests and one-day internationals he would go on to play for England. “It wasn’t a case of ‘if’ ... we all knew that he was so good that it was just a matter of time.” A stellar career also went on to include standing in as England captain in two Tests and 10 oneday internationals while John pointed out that Marcus can also

be referred to as the ultimate allrounder as he kept wicket for his country in five one-day clashes – and took wickets as well! Just about the only honour missing from a superb sporting CV is winning the County Championship with Somerset. And it would complete a remarkable fairytale if Marcus, who dropped down to the 2nds earlier this summer after losing form, can regain his place in the side and help his beloved county win an historic first-ever title when the season comes to an end in September.
