Shop and eat local - this is our new normal! AS more people get out and about in Hanham and Longwell Green this month after the coronavirus lockdown, the hope is that they will continue their renewed support for local traders. Shoppers are getting used to wearing masks in shops and on public transport and businesses have made adaptations to ensure they are Covid-secure. And in South Gloucestershire and across the country there is evidence that people are favouring their local high streets over big centres. Nicola Bartlett, of Eclectic gift shop in Hanham High Street, has thanked customers for their loyalty. “Some have told me that I was the first shop they had been to after lockdown and that they hadn’t ventured anywhere else yet, but that they feel more confident in small independent places,” she said. “The reaction been brilliant and the support has been incredible. People have said it’s been an absolute joy to be back in the shop and see beautiful things; it’s been really lovely to see people again!” Many cafes, restaurants and pubs are taking part in the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme this month. Among them are Zest restaurant, The Italian Kitchen, Flip Out Bristol, Chilli Inn, Subway Longwell Green, and The Old Lock and Weir. For a full list, visit bit.ly/2D4BcEO Businesses adapt: Page 5

Zebra crossing for Lower Hanham Rd RESIDENTS are being urged to put forward their views on proposed safety measures in Lower Hanham Road and Hanham Road. A long campaign by residents, councillors and MP Chris Skidmore for action curb traffic speeds and protect pedestrians has resulted in proposals for a zebra crossing just south of the junction with Mount Hill Road. The plans also include a speed hump, and beacon lights. High friction surfacing is set to be installed on the approach from the north of the zebra, to improve stopping for vehicles heading downhill. People have until August 10 to submit their comments to

South Gloucestershire Council. Conservative councillors June Bamford, Brenda Langley and Jason Pearce, who represent Hanham, said: “We are delighted that South Gloucestershire Council is considering installing these new traffic measures and want to thank them for bringing these plans to the public for consultation. “With the road regularly used every day, it is important that we are doing what we can to protect pedestrians and all other road users, and we hope residents will show a unified voice to support road safety in their community.” https://consultations.southglos. gov.uk/consult.ti/ZebraLHR/ consultationHome

Singer Kelsey,19, tops the charts A SINGER from Hanham is making an impact on the UK country music charts. Nineteen-year-old Kelsey Bovey lives with her mum, dad and older sister and works in a nursery. She developed her passion for music after learning the piano when she was eight, which led to singing lessons and guitar lessons. After developing a love for song writing, Kelsey showed an original song to her current co-producer and co-writer Danny McMahon. She then went to Puzzle Maker Studios near Temple Meads Station and recorded three songs for her debut EP It’s My Time, which was released in summer 2019. Kelsey is passionate about writing songs that young people can relate to, and after the release of her first single Define Me, she reached #29 in the UK Singer/Songwriter iTunes Charts. A year later she went on to release her new single Magnetic which reached #2 in the UK Country iTunes Charts, and her EP Not Scared Anymore reached #1 in the UK Country iTunes Charts after it was released in June. Speaking about her musical journey, Kelsey said: “I grew up listening to country music and Taylor Swift was my idol. I wanted to be like her one day. I was always singing around the house and down the streets. Professionally, I started when I was 11 years old singing classically, which helped me to understand my own voice which has

helped me massively throughout this journey “One of my earliest memories of singing was when I was the lead in my production in Year 6 when we were Wenlock and Mandeville (the 2012 Olympic Mascots) which I absolutely loved. This gave me a lot of confidence and also gave me the love for musical theatre I have today. “I also remember performing my first original song ‘Your Wish Will Come True’ in-front of my family for the first time which really stood out to me and made me realise I wanted to be a songwriter after I put all my skills together. The song was about being a fairy and helping others achieve their dreams which is quite sweet really! “I hope to release more music as soon as possible. I have been writing lots of music during the pandemic and it’s the best feeling to release something you’ve worked so hard on and held onto for so long. I also cannot wait for gigs to open up again and get playing to people, it will be so lovely to see faces and have normal social interaction. “I really hope sometime I can become a full time musician as this is what I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl. I completely understand things don’t happen overnight and I am willing to be patient if I know that it will become reality one day.” To find out more about Kelsey, visit: www. facebook.com/kelseyboveyuk

n NEWS Jobs Fair is taken online KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore is launching a “Jobs In Focus” webinar series to help showcase job and training opportunities for residents. The first online session of this series will take place on Friday September 11 at 2pm, with details on how constituents can register their interest and attend t due to be published on the MP's website and social media. Each webinar will focus on a separate sector, with the first one featuring representatives from retailers and supermarket chains, and an apprenticeships webinar planned for later in the year. Mr Skidmore has been organising Jobs Fairs in his constituency for the past ten years, bringing together a range of employers offering a variety of vacancies. This year, due to the challenges posed by the coronavirus outbreak and the difficulties in hosting physical Jobs Fairs locally, the MP has

decided to take the event online. Mr Skidmore said: “It has been a difficult few months for all of us and as we all navigate our new normal in the coronavirus recovery period, I know everyone is doing their part to support people in our community back into work."

How local lockdown looks A PLAN for what will happen if South Gloucestershire has to go into local lockdown has been published. The Covid-19 Local Outbreak Management Plan is designed to prevent and deal with any outbreaks of coronavirus in places such as care homes, schools and early years settings, communities and workplaces. Sara Blackmore, Director of Public Health, said: “We are working hard to monitor data on cases of Covid-19 in the area so that we can respond quickly if outbreaks occur. We are making sure residents and businesses, schools and care homes know

STAFF at Hanham Woods Academy marked the end of a school year like no other by taking part in an ativity marathon that raised more than £2,000 for the NHS. Fifty people were involved in the 72hour Moveathon, organised by head of PE Elliott Swanton. People took turns to exercise for an hour at a time, running, cycling, or doing pilates, yoga or fitness sessions, before passing a virtual baton to the next person. They started at 6am on Friday July 10 and finished at 6am on Monday July 13. Mr Swanton said there had been a huge

Moving tribute to NHS response from staff who wanted to show appreciation of the NHS over the past 72 years. “As well as raising money for Southmead Hospital NHS Charity, it has been great in bringing the staff body together, sharing their experiences and challenges, particularly some of the late night/early morning shifts! It has been a really enjoyable challenge, especially at the end of what has been an incredibly

5

challenging year,” he said. Steve Kneller, principal of the secondary school, who took part, said: “ Our ethos at Hanham Woods Academy is Dream Big, Work Hard, Achieve More and this fundraising project epitomises this. Fifty staff exercising for 72 hours to support and raise over £2000 for our amazing NHS is nothing short of remarkable. I would like to thank all staff who took part as well as everyone who donated.” There’s still time to make a donation: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ hwamoveathon2020

Businesses adapt to the 'new normal' AFTER months of enforced closure, businesses in many of the sectors worst affected by the lockdown have reopened. Traders and customers in Hanham and Longwell Green are adapting to the “new normal” of face masks, hand sanitising, social distancing and risk assessments. The Voice spoke to some local businesses to find out how they are getting back up and running following the easing of lockdown restrictions. Lisa Hooper works at The Carpet Barn in Longwell Green, which reopened on June 1 on an appointment system and then fully reopened on June 15. Speaking of the safety measures the store has put in place, she said: “We have hand sanitiser on entry and on the desk. We have tape on the floor with the 2-metre distancing, along with all the cleaning of our card machine. “We have been over the moon that we are back open as lots of people have been decorating while in lockdown, so they are glad to finally be able to get their flooring sorted. We have been extremely busy trying our best to keep all our customers happy getting their flooring fitted as soon as possible.”

Nicola at Eclectic Gift Shop fits her safety screen

Paul Tompkins has run Paul Tompkins Physiotherapy for 10 years, and his Hanham clinic, which is based at the Hanham Health surgery, has also recently reopened. He said: “We are having to pre-screen everyone remotely and wear PPE at all times, but customers have been fine about our new way of working,” he said, Abi Unwin, who has two children and lives in Hanham, set up a life and career coaching practice during lockdown. She was hoping she would be able to run sessions on a face-to-face basis; however she is having to work with clients online or over the phone for the foreseeable future. She said: “I have been coaching people in various roles for the past 20 years and

I recognise the value it brings to people’s happiness and wellbeing so it seemed like a good time to offer my service more widely when people really need someone to listen to them and help them through these challenging times. “I think many of us have adapted to a virtual communication method and although you don’t get quite the same feeling as a face-to-face session, it can be just as useful and more convenient. “This has actually made my practice more accessible for many people who might have struggled to travel to see me or found time to fit in a coaching session.” Nicola Bartlett opened Eclectic Gifts on Hanham High Street in 2017. Everything she stocks is designed and made locally in Bristol or the UK, and she works with 60 Bristol-based businesses. Products include artwork inspired by Bristol, sewers who make baby clothes, jewellery, stained glass, home ware, plant pots and ceramics. She reopened after lockdown

on June 15, and has put a range of safety measures in place in the shop, including erecting a safety screen in front of the till area, putting a one-way system in place and having a hand sanitiser station on entry and also at the till. She also launched a retail website during lockdown, something she says has been really well received. She told The Voice: “I’d like to say thank you to all of my customers, some have told me that I was the first shop they had been to after lockdown and that they hadn’t ventured anywhere else yet, but that they feel more confident in small independent places. “The reaction been brilliant and the support has been incredible. People have said it’s been an absolute joy to be back in the shop and see beautiful things, it’s been really lovely to see people again! “I know my customers really well, and I feel like part of the community here. One customer has been making face masks during lockdown, and I have started selling them in the shop and donating 50% of all sales to the Kingswood Food Bank. We have made one donation so far of £300, which is amazing!”

Library reopens

SOUTH Gloucestershire’s leisure centres are finally reopening after the coronavirus lockdown. The Active Lifestyle Centres in Kingswood, Longwell Green, Yate, Bradley Stoke and Thornbury were shut for four months. Doors were due to open again from July 27 with Circadian Trust, which runs them, saying changes will be made in stages. The trust has been working with UK Active, Community Leisure UK, sports governing bodies, government and health authorities to ensure Covid-19 secure measures are in place. These include spacing gym equipment further apart, reducing studio based class sizes and moving more popular classes to their sports halls to increase capacity. The trust will also be operating strict limits on numbers within centres, introducing enhanced cleaning regimes and sanitising stations.

KINGSWOOD Library has reopened on an appointment-only basis as part of the move out of lockdown. A click and collect facility is in place for the loan of books, DVDs and audiobooks. Users can book their slot online or by phone. People who want to visit any South Gloucestershire library for IT access and free wifi also have to make an appointment in advance. All libraries will have hand sanitiser at the entrances and floor markings are in place to ensure social distancing. Cabinet member for communities, Councillor Rachael Hunt said: “It is great news that our libraries will be introducing these services following the easing of lockdown restrictions and I know that the service is looking forward to welcoming back customers - albeit in a slightly different way, having missed that interaction over the past months. “To enable us to do this in a safe and managed way, customers must book in advance.” The service still offers access to free digital newspapers and magazines, ebooks and audiobooks online, which it says has been especially helpful to people who are shielding. The children's 2020 challenge Summer Reading Challenge has started too. Entitled Silly Squad, it invites children and families able to pick up a free bag from their library to do the challenge at home. For further information on the reopening of libraries and details of the measures being put in place, including how to pre book an appointment or use the click and collect service, visit www. southglos.gov.uk/librarychanges or call 01454 865022.

The introduction of a new online booking system and app will enable customers to plan ahead and pre-book all activities, classes and sessions, to ensure that safe social distancing can be observed. Mark Crutchley, chief executive, said: “We want to thank our customers for their patience during this challenging time and really look forward to welcoming them back. “The Chief Medical officer has himself stated that paying attention to your health and fitness is one of the best things you can do to protect yourself from Covid-19, so we are delighted to be opening our doors again and helping our customers get back to their pre-lockdown routines in a safe environment for both them and our staff.” For full information about visiting the centres visit www. activecentres.org

Friends rally for family after Jordan dies at 26 THE community has helped to raise funds for the family of a young man from Hanham who died after an accident in June. Jordan Lupton, 26, worked as a builder and was known to many people in the area. He was a former pupil of Hanham High School, and lived with his mum Michelle, three older sisters and younger brother. He was involved in a freak accident on a building site on Wednesday June 24, and died in hospital on Thursday June 25, leaving his family and friends devastated. After his death, Jordan’s friend Charlie Mckenzie set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds for his family and also to pay for his funeral. The page had an initial target of £500, but at the time of writing £12,712 had been raised. Writing on the page, Charlie said: “I am doing this on behalf of his mother and family. Jordan was a loving caring son, brother, uncle and friend to so many. “Words can’t describe the terrible accident that happened to Jordan on a normal day’s work. He fought the whole way through multiple life-changing surgery but sadly lost the battle. “No mother should have to plan their son's funeral, let alone think about trying to pay for it when so many of us live pay cheque to pay cheque. I know no amount of money can replace your son Michelle and your brother Tay, Keisha, Roxanne and Mason, but this is just something from the boys to say we have got you for any needs. Other comments left on the page included: “He worked on my house the day before, he did seem like such a nice boy... my

Jordan Lupton, son, brother and friend heart goes out to his family”, “I only know you from doing some work on our house, and seeing you around our area, but even then you made such an impression. You were such a joy to have around, always laughing and joking” and “I cannot imagine what his poor family are going though at the moment. He was far too young.” Jordan’s funeral was due to take place on Friday July 31 at Westerleigh Crematorium. Friends and family were invited to stand on the roadside to give him the best send-off possible. POLICE are investigating an arson attack at the former Strachan and Henshaw factory in Speedwell. The blaze was started in the early hours of July 9. An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the fire is believed to have been started deliberately. A police spokesperson said: "We can confirm this is being treated as deliberate and an investigation is ongoing." The fire follows two major blazes at the site in the last two years. On New Year's Eve 2018 a fire at the nine-floor tower block on the site was tackled by more than 60 firefighters. The site's landlord Wayne Braund is facing seven fire safety charges in relation to that blaze,. In May last year a second blaze destroyed some of the 30 workshops being used by businesses at the site and left the others out of bounds, as the building was declared unsafe.

Special visit to mark Dora's 106th birthday DORA Banfield, a resident at Deerhurst Care Home in Kingswood, has celebrated her 106th birthday. Born in Kent in 1914, Dora has lived through two World Wars. She was brought up on a farm, joined the Land Army, then became a teacher and an artist and had a book published when she was 93 years old about how to be an artist. She has three children, eight grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. Dora, who has lived at the home run by Brunelcare for two years, marked her big day with an outdoor visit from her daughter Mary. Mary said: “I was so pleased to see Mum on her birthday, what a special time we had! I can hardly believe we have a Mum who is 106 years old. I thought she looked very well. "I want to thank everyone at Deerhurst for making her birthday such a special occasion.

The awning was a cosy place to sit and the decorations were bright and cheerful. The care home really did go above and beyond to accommodate us and ensure mum had a special day.” Oona Goldsworthy, Brunelcare chief executive, said: “We are so thrilled we could celebrate Dora’s special day with her and her family. "Our Deerhurst care home really did pull out all the stops to ensure Dora and her family had the most magical day as possible during these unprecedented times. We have extraordinary people giving extraordinary care across our five care homes.” Deerhurst was the first of Brunelcare’s homes to offer outdoor, socially distant garden visits for family and friends of residents. 106 years young - Dora Banfield at Deerhurst Care Home on her birthday

Pint-sized punk makes big impact A TEN-year-old music fan has been in the spotlight after his punk and rock fanzine gained attention from as far-afield as Australia. Arlo Lippiatt was encouraged to start the ‘pint-sized punk’ fanzine by his mum Hannah during lockdown. Hannah is an English teacher, and Arlo wanted to develop some skills as part of his home schooling and write about music too. Arlo, who lives in Saltford, enjoys going to gigs and festivals with his parents, and alongside music he likes drawing cartoons and watching Marvel and Star Wars films. Now in its second edition, the homemade publication has sold over 1000 copies across the world and features of interviews, illustrations, puzzles and comics. Arlo has been able to develop his maths skills by adding up production costs, while sending notes to the artists he wanted to interview has helped him to practise his handwriting.

Arlo has had the chance to interview some of the biggest names in music, including Banf from the Super Furry Animals, the Manic Street Preachers, IDLES and Fontaines D.C, and has become known for his unique line of questioning. At a time when one of music’s biggest publications, Q Magazine, has ceased printing, Arlo has been able to experience a taste of fame as a result of the publication’s success. His story has been featured on BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio Bristol, and in The Guardian and The Times, and Arlo has said he has really enjoyed seeing the reaction the zine has had. He said: “Doing the interviews has been really fun, and chatting to loads of people has been really amazing. The response it’s received feels overwhelming. I didn’t think we were going to sell as many copies, I thought it would just be a couple of family and friends who would buy it to support me.

“My favourite bands are IDLES, Fontaines D.C and Queen. I don’t know if I want to do the zine in the future, but would quite like to stay working in music. I play bass guitar and would maybe like to be in a band too!” Hannah added: “When we first started the zine as a home schooling project, being honest we thought we would probably print 30 or 40 copies for family and a few indulgent friends, so we were really surprised when offering it through a Facebook group we sent out about 300 copies of the first issue. “We’re now at the stage where Arlo has sent out about 1400 copies across both editions, and it’s really astounding, particularly at a time when other print is going out of business. “As a parent it’s fantastic to watch his confidence grow each time he speaks to somebody, and I think partly his age is helpful as he doesn’t seem fazed by any level of fame. When he’s done

any media interviews, he’s just been having a chat! “Both my husband and I and the rest of our family are enormously proud of Arlo, and he’s now helping out at Longwell Records in Keynsham on a Sunday, so he’s taking on even more responsibility but it’s all things that he enjoys!” To find out more about pint-sized punk and to buy a copy for £3, visit: https:// pintsizedpunkzine.bandcamp. com/

n OUR PLANET MATTERS

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI

All you need is love THE Beatles were asked to provide a song with a message that could be easily understood by everyone, and using ‘basic English’ terms. ... In a statement to Melody Maker magazine, Brian Epstein, the band's manager, said of All You Need Is Love: "It was an inspired song and they really wanted to give the world a message." I think the message was peace not war when the song was written in 1967 because, due to the cold war, the brewing troubles in Northern Ireland and the Vietnam war, the world was a very uncertain and scary place. John Lennon was a peace activist and If you look up the words of his song Imagine (1971) you can see his amazing heart for worldwide equality and unity. Today for different reasons, including Covid 19 and climate breakdown, the future of our planet is maybe even more uncertain and what is happening in the world just as scary. Last month I mentioned the ‘zoom course for hopeful activists’ that I participated in during lockdown & interestingly the main theme that came out was love. We do have a bit of a problem with the word love in the English language – I love chocolate, I love my partner and I love the environment each use the same word but the meaning is different depending on the context. The words passion and compassion seem more suitable words to describe love for the environment. One thing I learnt on the course was that we are all potential activists in some way or another but action without passion will soon become meaningless and if we lack compassion for others then we just stay in our own little bubble and achieve very little in the way of lasting widespread change.

I have a passion for the environment especially the sea and wild untamed land. I love to hear birdsong and see insects of all kinds. The thought that butterflies might have benefited from the lower pollution levels this year makes my heart leap. So what difference has the course made? I have been picking up rubbish and dog poo left in the fields for over a year (see the new photo) but now, instead of seeing it as a chore, I see it as a purpose. My change in attitude seems to have invited conversation with other walkers (thank you if you are one of them) and some are now picking up rubbish too. We will all have different passions – maybe for trees, to stop pollution, to reduce plastic waste or to lobby the government about the less than healthy trade deals they are contemplating. I invite you to find your passion and join others to bring about change. We can make a difference. Please email me if you have a story to share. Till next time. Penny prwaller29@gmail.com PS - Please stay covid aware if you decide to pick up other people's rubbish. Wear gloves, use hand gel and don't pick up broken glass or cans with sharp edges. Never pick up needles or syringes - report where you have seen them to the neighbourhood police

As I write this, the covid-19 pandemic which has gripped the world over the last months is now threatening to make its deadly return. Sadly our lovely group was forced to close its regular monthly meetings in March. However, not to be outwitted our committee members have been able to keep in regular contact with all of our members, by making frequent telephone calls or email if this was preferred. We have been having friendly chats and been able to offer support and a symapthetic ear where needed. The beauty of this situation has been that we are feeling more connected and a little closer to ladies we recognised but didn't really know very well. I would say that we are no longer acquaintances but have established some friendships, as we have got to know each other better. The contact we have made is very important in these

uncertain times. It has been quite heart warming when a telephone friend says how lovely it is to have a chat and they are looking forward to the next call. I feel sure we shall emerge from this situation stronger than before. With the easing of lock down over the weeks, I am frequently asked if there is any news of returning to our normal meetings. We are all looking forward to that day when we can reunite, have a good natter and enjoy a cup of tea and a biscuit and not least one another's company. Whatever the future holds, we know that the Women's Institute family, will carry on and continue to support, not only one another but our communities and national campaigns. Details of our monthly group being reinstated will be notified in this column when the relevant risk assessments have been completed at our normal venue. Ann Baulch

Help Oscar to save the sharks

E-car charging for Hanham

A seven-year-old from Kingswood has decided to raise funds to protect sharks after watching a documentary with his dad. Oscar Rogers, who attends St Stephen’s infant school, first became aware of sharks and the dangers they face after speaking to a friend. His mum Chantelle said: “He learned about sharks from a friend in school, and has been obsessed ever since reading and learning all there is to be known about them. “The fundraising began because my husband mentioned a show by Gordon Ramsay, about how sharks are fished and 95 per cent of the body is wasted and only the fins are kept for soup. This upset and angered Oscar and he couldn’t watch any more. We decided to do some research on how to raise money and came across The Shark Trust. “The charity have been so kind and friendly to Oscar, they too are so proud and happy for him.

ELECTRIC car charging points are being installed in Laburnum Road car park in Hanham. They are among 14 chargers being introduced in South Gloucestershire by March next year as part of a network of facilities for electric car drivers. Other fast chargers are being installed at Cecil Road car park in Kingswood and Haynes Road car park in Staple Hill, while the Bristol & Bath Science Park in Emersons Green will become a “flagship” hub with five rapid chargers, that can charge a typical electric car’s batteries in as little as 20 minutes, more fast chargers, and a solar canopy. More information about the scheme can be found online at bit.ly/3jn8j6M. Fast chargers deliver 7kW to 22kW, which can charge a typical electric car in between one and six hours, and rapid chargers 43kW or more, which can charge electric vehicle batteries in 20 minutes to an hour.

Oscar Rogers has already raised £150 to save sharks

We started the goal on the Go Fund Me page at £100, and have managed to reach £156 so far! “Of course every donation is important and we would love more people to donate. We started raising the funds through family and friends, and we are so grateful to everyone who donated. We would also like to say a massive thank you to the wonderful staff at

Falcon Court for donating for my son’s cause. “As his mother I am beyond proud of my son, his dad also is so proud he's done so well.” Oscar said: “I love sharks and my favourite sharks are the megladon, hammerhead and great white.” To support Oscar and his fundraising, visit: https:// gf.me/u/x8k7hx

School fosters community spirit OUR Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School is making sure most of its children don’t miss out on the usual summer experiences - by holding them in September. The school has said that children will spend the first couple of weeks of the new school year with their teachers from 2019-10 in their old classrooms. They will also have a sports day and there are plans for a Year 6 Leavers’ Mass when it is safe to do so. School business manager Jayne Russell said: “We are so looking forward to welcoming all the children back to school. We feel it is important that each class has the opportunity to ‘finish’ their school year together, where they can reflect and reminisce about their challenges and achievements before moving on to their next year group.” The school, like all others, has had to work differently since March but has worked hard to maintain its togetherness and community spirit. One of the highlights of the spring and summer was VE Day, when children learned about the 75th anniversary of the end of the

Maintaining the spirit of togetherness at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School Second World War in Europe. Jayne Russell said: “We were able to make links between the community spirit shown by the wartime generation, and the way our country has come together recently to follow Government advice and staying home as much as possible to protect the NHS and save lives. “Time was spent creating a stunning display, and on the Thursday we celebrated in style, playing war-time games such as 5 stones (similar to Jacks), eating cake, drinking home-made lemonade and listening to music – all whilst socially distancing of course!”

Work has been going on behind the scenes to improve the look and feel of the school environment. Key worker children who have been in school have helped paint tyres and turn them into planting beds. Further tyres have also been recycled into an obstacle course on the school field. The ‘Communi-tree’ out at the front of the school has been decorated with colourful ribbons, as signs of hope and optimism. The ribbons were added by children in school, but also by many of the school community who have been at home, joining in with the project during the daily walks.

n KINGSWOOD HERITAGE MUSEUM

Another communal project was to revamp the alleyway by the playground entrance. The most exciting development of this area is the new ‘Leavers’ Wall’, where Year 6 children are leaving their handprint, initials and date on a brick they have painted. The school laid on socially distanced sessions for classes on Fridays. These coincided with the launch of the Recovery Curriculum. Children brought in their ‘Happiness Boxes’ to present to their peers and presented their greatest achievements and lockdown learning. The school’s latest project is to display ‘Moment in Time’ canvases, featuring pictures sent in from families celebrating (i) a moment of happiness during lockdown (ii) a moment of learning / achievement / conquering a challenge – academic or not – during lockdown (iii) a family ‘porch portrait’. “We feel it is exceptionally important to acknowledge the wide variety of challenges we have all faced during this pandemic, and especially celebrate the positives that have come from these,” Jayne Russell said.

150 homes planned for Grange site REDEVELOPMENT of the Grange School site in Warmley has made significant progress, the Voice has been told. Following South Gloucestershire Council’s master-planning exercise and community engagement activities, an outline planning application is being prepared, which will see the site repurposed for housing, education and sports uses. Homes England has awarded South Gloucestershire Council £4.6 million in February to redevelop part of the former secondary school site for residential purposes. It is proposed that that there will be a minimum of 150 new homes there. In early March, a well-attended community engagement event took place at Warmley Memorial Hall and Community Centre. Officers from the council and members of the project team met residents and explained the nature of the draft proposals, which they say were generally well received.

Digitech is run by the Cabot Learning Federation, which has been given the go-ahead to open a primary school on the site. It is due

to be named Tower Road Primary and could open to its first reception class in September next year. The council says there is potential for further education facilities on the site. Councillor Steve Reade, Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and the Strategic Environment, said: “We are delighted to receive this Homes England funding,

which will help us achieve some of our aspirations for this precious parcel of council-owned land. “Our ambition is to make the best use of this land as possible and deliver a balance of housing and facilities that provide for the local community. There is a growing demand for school places and new homes, and we also want to ensure some of the space is dedicated to continue providing sport and leisure activities in the area.” A council spokesman told the Voice: “Although we don’t have a timescale at this stage, in accordance with planning policy, there will be a minimum of 35 per cent affordable housing comprising of homes for social rent and shared ownership. There is also a requirement to deliver five per cent of the units for self or custom build.” Demolition of buildings on the site, which ceased during the lockdown, has now resumed.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Help in challenging times

T

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

HE last few weeks have seen announcements from the Chancellor that are designed to protect jobs, support local employers and secure promising figures for young people across Kingswood. August sees the launch of the Chancellor’s Eat Out To Help Out scheme, which offers a discount to diners to encourage them to eat at local restaurants, pubs and cafes. You can use the scheme all day, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 31 August 2020 and it offers a 50% discount, up to a maximum of £10 per person, to diners for food or nonalcoholic drinks to eat or drink in. This scheme comes on top of the Chancellor’s targeted temporary reduction of VAT to 5% for hospitality, accommodation and attractions from 15 July 2020 to 12 January 2021. As lockdown

eases, this will provide another boost to our local attractions and hospitality businesses - which employ hundreds of local people - as they try to get back on their feet. As well as heavy discounts and targeted tax cuts, there is also a new Job Retention Bonus which aims to reward and incentivise employers who bring staff back from furlough with a one-off payment of £1,000 for every furloughed employee who remains continuously employed through to the end of January 2021. For local youngsters, a Kickstart Scheme will create 6-month work placements for those aged 16-24. Funding made available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus other costs. There

will also be new payments for businesses for hiring apprentices and new funding for traineeships. As the local MP, I know that this is a worrying time for local business owners, their workers and young people looking to enter the world of work. I welcome this comprehensive package from the Chancellor which should boost confidence, help to protect existing jobs and create new opportunities during these challenging times. Finally, we should all be on the lookout for our local small shopkeepers to enter the Best Small Shops Competition so we can celebrate the central role they play in our neighbourhoods. The competition is free to enter. Shopkeepers can nominate their businesses until Friday 11th September 2020 via www. bestsmallshops.co.uk.

'Neglected, old, off-putting and bleak' KINGSWOOD’S main shopping area is seen as "left behind, with lots to fix", a survey has revealed. South Gloucestershire Council carried out what it describes as an additional public engagement exercise as part of the preparation for its business case for money from the Government’s Future High Streets fund. People were asked to come up with three words to describe Kingswood High Street now and the most common responses were neglected, old, off-putting and bleak. Asked how they’d like it to be in the future, respondents said pleasant, vibrant, up-to-date and with a greater variety of shops. The report concludes: “The most vital improvement will be updating the feel of the whole street to be more attractive, modern, and looked-after.” It says the most popular ideas were food or farmers’ markets, more outdoor eating and on-street trading and more affordable accommodation.

The council received 603 responses to the survey, which took place between May 7 and June 7. This compares with 244 responses to its initial consultation last year. Sixty seven per cent of respondents supported pedestrianisation of Regent Street in principle, with no

strong opinions as to whether traffic should be diverted to the north via Kimberley Road, Gilbert Road and Park Road or to the south via Blackhorse Road and Cecil Road. The council has stressed that this is an informal process and any plan to back traffic would be put out for full consultation on

all the options. It says further work would be needed to address issues raised by businesses and residents. Overall, it says, it is “seeking to develop a family-friendly economy that will increase footfall and challenge the issues of congestion and poor air quality in areas most densely used by shoppers and visitors.” The findings of the informal survey will be submitted as part of South Gloucestershire’s business case and the council says it is encouraged by the support for its key proposals. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore said: "I am delighted to see there is continuing momentum to regenerate our local area. “The high level of engagement, interest and support shown by local residents for these ambitious plans will help make the case for further funding to unlock Kingswood's potential and bring even more opportunities for local residents and businesses."

Site offers 'inspirational new cultural offer' FULL restoration of the Whitfield Tabernacle is at the heart of the plans to revive Kingswood centre. The trustees of the historic building hope to make it a community space with possible uses including a space for performances and a cultural cinema. South Gloucestershire Council sees the Grade-1 listed building as the key to a wider programme of investment in land and building acquisition in the town centre. The first phase of work to stabilise the most vulnerable parts of the derelict tabernacle on Park Road has now been completed. This will enable safe access so the second phase of the work, funded by £682,000 awarded by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) through its ‘Love our High Streets’ project, can begin. Listed Building Consent has been granted and the council has appointed an architect on behalf of the Whitfield Tabernacle Trust to help plan the rest of the redevelopment, which is dependent on a successful bid to the Government’s Future High Streets Fund. The building has a rich ecclesiastical history, reaching back to George Whitfield who, with John and Charles Wesley and John Cennick established the Evangelical revivalist movement in Bristol during the 1730s.

Heritage site: Whitfield Tabernacle After John Wesley’s New Room in Bristol (built in 1739), the Whitfield Tabernacle is the earliest of the non-conformist places of worship built throughout the world during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was opened in 1742 and eventually shut in 1992. The Masters Church was built nearby in 1851. It served until 1983 when the church was finally closed due to falling attendances. The Grade-II listed Masters Church is now being converted by Crossman Homes to 19 apartments with three dwellings behind. The Rev Anthony Hick, chairman of the Whitfield Tabernacle Trust, said: “This represents an exciting first next step for the trust in the restoration of this historic

building which is valued and remembered fondly by many Kingswood residents. “Kingswood played an extraordinary role in the birth of non-conformist religion the evangelical revival and I am pleased that the wider regeneration plans for Kingswood are presenting history and culture at the heart of the offer. “Stabilisation will enable us to open the building to the public for the first time for nearly 30 years. We intend to have display boards inside to tell the history and significance of the building and enable visitors to grasp the vision and potential for its future.” Council leader Toby Savage said the proposals could provide an inspirational new cultural offer for Kingswood. "It is great to see all the activity on the Whitfield Tabernacle Conservation Area,” he said “We have been thoroughly committed to securing the investment to finally restore the tabernacle alongside this private sector investment and hope that the Government will back us to go beyond stabilisation and complete full restoration.” • The Whitfield Tabernacle Trust is keen to hear from people with an interest in the site or with expertise they might be able to offer. n NEWS DELAYS over repairs to leaky skylights at Courtney Primary School in Kingswood have come in for strong criticism. The school has had to cope with water pouring down walls near electrics for months and Woodstock ward councillor Pat Rooney has said “promises were made but not kept” to fix the problems. She told a South Gloucestershire Council cabinet meeting last month that things seemed to be moving following her email to the council leader Toby Savage on June 16. Conservative cabinet member for schools, skills and employment Erica Willams admitted the delays were “extremely frustrating” but said talks would take place the following week to agree a timetable of works with staff and contractors. However, although some work is being done over the summer, it seems that the repairs to the skylights could have to wait for the next school holiday. Councillor Rooney, who leads the Labour group, said at the remote meeting that her email to Councillor Savage had described “the seriousness of the school’s fabric with water running down walls and ceiling tiles throughout the school, against exposed pipes and gaping holes, and most dangerously the fact that the water pouring in was channelling near the electrics. She added: “As you know, Councillor Williams visited earlier in the year and was shown around all the problem areas inside and outside the building. Promises were

Row over lack of action to repair leaky school roof

Water running down the walls from leaky skylights at Courtney Primary School in Kingswood made but not kept. Can I and Courtney Primary School have an assurance that all repairs will be carried out as soon as possible and a timetable provided so it will be fit for purpose to welcome back all the children in September?” Councillor Williams replied: “It is extremely frustrating for the school but I have assurance that there is a timetable of work to be carried out. “A health and safety consultant, along with property services and the education team, will be meeting at the school in the week commencing July 13.” She said the meeting would consider which repairs could safely be done in termtime and which would need to be in the holidays, and she said temporary

repairs would be discussed. “I am looking at this as a positive way forward to get all these issues resolved for Courtney Primary School.” Councillor Savage said the council was reliant on the construction industry for school repairs but the sector had been significantly impacted by Covid-19, although the situation was now improving. A council spokesman said afterwards: “The council is working with Courtney Primary School to agree a programme of works to the gutters to start during the summer holiday period. The council is liaising with contractors and members of staff to agree a timeframe in respect of works to the skylights.” A Courtney Primary School

spokesperson said: “We are very keen to get the skylight issue resolved as soon as possible and look forward to the meeting with the council when we hope to learn when the repairs can be made.We are so proud of our building and grounds, so it has been frustrating that the work to repair the skylights will not happen over the summer break. “There have been a number of longstanding issues with weatherproofing on our roof and guttering, but not so much that have allowed them to detract from the way we work as a school. We were delighted to receive a really positive ‘Good’ Ofsted report in May 2019 and we are hugely ambitious for both the school’s and our pupils’ futures.”

Steve joins church team THE Rev Steve Dyson has been appointed associate vicar in the Kingswood and Hanham Team Ministry. A spokesman for Bristol Diocese said Steve would work collaboratively with others to reach out in mission and grow disciples. Steve has been vicar at St Lawrence’s Church in Biddulph, Staffordshire for the last four years. He trained for ordination at Trinity College, Bristol and then worked in a group of five parishes just outside Exeter. Before he was ordained Steve worked in mental health as a community based support worker, and before that he was a youth worker in Swaziland. Steve is married to Eley, a peripatetic

music teacher, singer, musician, and worship leader. They have three daughters Lydia, Abigail and Naomi, two of whom were born in Bristol. Mr Dyson said: “What attracted me to the role was the remit to ‘be creative and take risks’ in seeking to help the churches in engaging with their communities and in particular young people and families. “As a family we come as a team;Eley and the girls have much to contribute and we look forward to making our home in east Bristol. We can’t deny that we will be arriving in the most bizarre and challenging but we sense that in God’s grace there is also much opportunity for creative thinking and new ventures and adventures on the way.”

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

Bishop of Bristol, the Rt Rev Bishop Vivienne Faull, said: “Steve comes with diverse experience. “I am sure that he will be a real asset to the team in Kingswood and Hanham as it seeks to be the church in that place. It is not an easy time to be starting a new role so I pray that the whole family will settle in well in what is evidently a bit of homecoming!”

High hopes for 2020-21 season MANGOTSFIELD United have started planning pre-season as club's wait for news of when league football will re-start. Manager Glyn Ashton told supporters on the club website that he was currently expecting league fixtures to start in late September or early October, subject to government guidance. He said: "The squad for the coming season will be based upon the younger players that finished last season with us. Whilst results didn’t go our way in the games I managed, I felt that we were competitive in every game, and with key players returning from injury and a few additional players in certain positions, I feel that we are more than capable of competing well next season. "In addition, a lot of the players we have would have either played for our youth teams or live in, or are close to, Mangotsfield and

therefore have more of a connection and loyalty to the club, which ideally is what I’m looking for." Glyn said the club's partnership with SGS College would also play a big part in player recruitment, drawing on the college's "exceptional talent pool", which includes many former Mangotsfield Youth) players, while the college's head of male football David Hockaday, a former Leeds United head coach, will continue to be part of the Mangos' coaching staff. Glyn thanked those who had donated to the club's crowdfunding campaign and said: "Along with other initiatives going on in the background I believe the club’s future is very bright with exciting times ahead." The club will publish details on friendlies when known. Dave Smale

Boxing clever

A LOCAL charity has helped more than 600 young people through the lockdown. Empire Fighting Chance, founded by Martin Bisp, from Downend, has supported 636 young people with boxing therapy, delivering over 3,700 coaching hours through the pandemic. It worked with 25 schools to provide support for pupils, delivered food parcels, provided careers advice and launched a content hub with online training videos. Martin said: “We are so proud of the work we managed to fulfil during lockdown. Some young people we work with have severe mental health issues. We couldn’t let their therapy fall behind. Our coaches and staff were amazing at adapting to the circumstances.”

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

F

RYS Bowling Club in Keynsham has been awarded £3,245 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Emergency Fund towards the cost of green maintenance and loss of income from cancelled matches during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak of the virus and the consequent shutdown of businesses as of March 23 has left the sport and physical activity sector facing a period of uncertainty. In response, on March 31 Sport England announced a £195m package to help the sport and physical activity sector through COVID-19. Within the package is a £20m Community Emergency Fund, of National Lottery money

to deliver immediate funding to those who have a role in supporting the nation to be active but are experiencing short-term financial hardship or the ceasing of operations due to the impact of coronavirus. The grant will allow Frys Bowling Club to cover the cost of green maintenance and loss of income for the coming months. Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s Chief Executive, said: “As the body responsible for the growth of sport and physical activity participation, we want the vital grassroots organisations that make sport and physical activity happen in this country to not just to come through this crisis but to be in a position to thrive again in the future. The £20m Community

Emergency fund, made possible by National Lottery players, is part of a multi-million pound package of support we are providing to ease the pressure on a huge number of the organisations who are central to the nation’s health and wellbeing. We are proud to be able to provide vital funding to Frys Bowling Club to help it through these extremely challenging times.” Andy Kendall, Chairman of Frys Bowling Club said: “The club’s officers and members are extremely grateful for the award and would like to thank Sport England and the National Lottery for their generosity. Without this financial assistance the bowling club’s 103 year history may have come to an end. We can now look forward to providing local

residents with this sports facility for many years to come”. On the green, with recent changes to the restrictions, we have been able to have pairs and triples play, as well organising informal club afternoons in place of our regular friendly matches. We are still open for new members, whether or not you have experience of bowls before. For more information about Frys Bowling Club or if you wish to apply for membership, or arrange tuition, please contact our Secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, e-mail: frysbowlsclub@gmail.com. You can also visit our website for more information: www.frysbowlsclub. webs.com."

together with the bar allowing participants to have a drink at the end of the game with social distancing being observed. Only 30 members will be allowed on site at any given time covering both the green and the clubhouse. At least the introduction of these two competitions gives members the chance of playing against each other as all of the leagues that both ladies and gentlemen play in have been cancelled for the season. At the time of writing we should have enjoyed our annual BBQ which is arranged each year

by the Social Committee in aid of the Captains’ chosen charities, which this year would have been Parkinsons UK. The committee would normally be planning monthly social events for the winter months ahead but this is very difficult in such uncertain times. However the majority of our members do belong to a generation where optimism for the future is the order of the day. In the words of the late Vera Lynn recently echoed by the Queen in her televised address “we will meet again”.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

M

EMBERS of Keynsham Bowling Club are starting to get back to the game they love. At the start of June the Government lifted the lockdown on external sports and members were able to return to the green in Keynsham Park and play subject to strict controls. A friendly rollup was all that was allowed and that was by way of pre booking a green with only twelve members on site at any time with just three greens being used. In addition all buildings were closed apart from the toilets.

As we moved into July restrictions were eased and the Executive Committee decided to respond accordingly. Members were asked if they wanted to participate in singles and pairs competitions over the next couple of months and 24 players are taking part in each one. Strict time limits have been placed on each game and if the designated number of ends have not been played at the end of 90 minutes, the winners will be decided upon based on the number of shots scored at the end of the time slot. The clubhouse will be open
