Bee a winner on our high street trail Your chance to win a share of £10,000 and support local traders THIS summer, 16 bright and beautiful bees will be buzzing about on our local high streets and community spaces. Over the next eight weeks, you can ‘collect’ these bees by taking a photo of yourself with them and entering a weekly draw to win £150 vouchers per South Gloucestershire high street to spend with our independent traders. The trail is part of South Gloucestershire Council’s campaign to support local high street traders who have so much to offer customers: whether it is food and drink with friends and family, shopping for essentials, leisure, learning or looking good. Covid-19 has been a difficult time for traders. We now want people from across South Gloucestershire to rediscover their high streets where most restrictions are now removed. Come and see what they have to offer. The bee trail creates something for everyone to enjoy and win vouchers to spend in independent shops. All the traders in Hanham & Longwell Green are buzzing for you to spend time there. All the fibreglass bees are very different and have been decorated by local artists. When the Bee Trail Challenge is complete the bees will be auctioned for charity.

2 SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT

Your high streets are changing Your high streets are changing – now its time to get behind them, says South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage

How to take part in the Bee Trail challenge Our sixteen bees buzz onto South Gloucestershire high streets from Saturday 24 July and will remain until 18 September. Step One: Find your two bees on a South Gloucestershire high street. Use the Bee Trail map on the back page to discover the location of the bees on the high street or visit southglos.gov.uk/shopsouthglos where you can also find full terms and conditions.

Step Two: Take a selfie with your mobile device at the first bee. You can then scan the QR code or website URL displayed on the information panel (see example right) to access our competition site. Upload your photograph and name/ details.

Step Three:

‘Everyone at the council is proud that we are funding the bee trail challenge. I cannot thank the local artists enough who have decorated the fibreglass bees that will become a colourful, vibrant part of our high streets and community spaces for the next eight weeks. Ultimately, the challenge is about supporting our high streets to thrive. They were already changing before the pandemic. Covid-19 has simply accelerated that change and we are supporting them in that reinvention. Shopping is part of the picture. But following the pandemic, people increasingly use high streets for leisure, learning, meeting up with friends, family, and work colleagues. The different high street uses all reinforce each other. For example, a family may take out books at the library, visit a café for lunch, buy hardware items for a DIY project, and finish their trip at the local play park. So, I’d like to ask all Voice readers to please participate in the bee trail. Take the opportunity to explore the wonderful changes taking place on the high street driven by the dedication and enthusiasm of our traders. Good luck winning high street vouchers!”

Covid rates in South Glos hit record levels ABOUT one in every 10 school pupils in South Gloucestershire was having to self-isolate and learn at home as the summer term came to an end. The council said an increase in infections in school-aged children was in line with neighbouring areas and national trends, as Covid-19 surged to its highest recorded levels in the area. Public Health England figures for the week up to July 18 showed that 2,291 people in South Gloucestershire had a confirmed positive Covid test result - almost double the number from a week before. Case rates per 100,000 in the Kingswood district were between 846 and 1,031. The number of cases recorded in that week were: Kingswood South, 97, up 79 per cent from 43 the week before; Kingswood North West and Staple Hill 85; Cadbury Heath North and Bridgeyate 103; Hanham, 94; Longwell Green and Oldland Common 92; Two Mile Hill 62. The ending of lockdown restrictions on July 19 also coincided with the end of schools being responsible for tracing contacts of confirmed cases among pupils, as the summer term entered its final days. A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: "Currently around 1 in 10 of South Gloucestershire pupils are in receipt of remote learning due to either a confirmed case of Covid-19, or a requirement to isolate due to contact inside or outside of the educational setting. This proportion is similar within our neighbouring authorities." Unions said they had heard "many anecdotes of parents starting to keep children off trying to avoid their child having to self-isolate for the first days of a planned holiday" National Education Union joint general secretary Kevin

Courtney said: "According to the latest Government data, covid cases amongst school children are now at higher levels even than the autumn term peaks." South Gloucestershire Director of Public Health, Sara Blackmore, urged all residents to take care following the lifting of restrictions. She said: “Covid has not gone away. We are all keen to get back to living without restrictions, but the measures we are asking people to now choose to follow are simple. We are all used to doing these things and they are an easy way of helping to look after those around us. “We are also still encouraging everyone who can to take up the vaccine when they are invited to do so, and accessing an appointment for the jab is easier than ever, with more and more drop-in sessions being held. Go online to www.grabajab.net to find out about a session near you. “Regular testing is also still really important. No-one would want to pass on the virus to others, but a third of people who have the coronavirus, even after receiving a vaccination, are still able to carry and potentially spread it without showing any symptoms. "Regular, rapid (lateral flow) testing can help us identify cases we otherwise wouldn’t detect and by isolating, help to keep more people safe. "No-one wants to isolate, but having come so far, we really must stay the course.” The council says its libraries, One Stop Shops and Registrars, are open for residents to access the services they need. Staff are still expected to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitiser will continue to be available and additional cleaning measures remain in place. Office-based council staff are also continuing to work from home where they can.

Residents oppose shop plan at pub From Page 1 Muhammad Rizwan said: “There is a paper petition that is ever growing. “This has over 200 signatures… and is available in shops local to the proposed site.” In addition to the petition, more than 70 residents have written to South Gloucestershire Council to object to the planning application. No one had written in favour of the application when we went to press. Lisa Davis wrote: “I don’t think we need another store when we already have one on the opposite side of the road and one a 10 minute walk up the hill. I use the post office a lot and this would jeopardise the future of this inside the Costcutter as a new shop is likely to impact customer volume.” The pub, known for its live music events, is included in the Local List of heritage buildings for South Gloucestershire and appears on maps as far back as 1841. The shop will cover the current parking area for the pub, with a new 16-space car park for the pub included alongside the eight parking spaces for the shop, including one disabled space. This will be accessed off Tower Road South. Bitton and Oldland Common ward

councillor Erica Williams, Conservative, said: “I object strongly to the proposed application for a convenience store on this site. “I do think that we have quite enough convenience stores in a small area that are struggling to make ends meet. There is usually at least one accident a week on Tower Road South and the Cadbury Heath junction. They may not be major accidents but still have an impact on traffic flow.” Bradie Scotcher said: “This shop will make our small village too busy and add

additional trouble.” Cordage Estates Limited, which is working for the pub’s owner Punch Taverns Ltd, claims an 83 per cent success rate on first planning applications. The planning application estimates 293 vehicles will use the shop’s car park each day. Some objections to the planning application point out that the automatic traffic count carried out to support the application was done during lockdown, when fewer cars than normal were on the roads. The application says that only one personal injury collision has occurred at the junction in the past five years. Objector Claire Leonard said: “As a car driver, going to work I daily use the route of Cadbury Heath Road/Tower Road South and the junction is not easy to navigate. You always have to push forward from Cadbury Heath Road onto the always busy Tower Road South. “The increase in traffic to use a new shop is not going to improve this situation. I have noticed many near incidents and can only believe the new proposal would eventually lead to fatalities.” Staff at the pub didn’t respond to our request for comment.

Music event nets £5k for Oscar 's f und MUSIC lovers raised more than £5,000 at a Rock 4 Charity event last month. Performer Darren Sims, known as Daz, organised the event at Bitton AFC in Bath Road. More than 150 people turned up to enjoy music by Daz, some special guests and local band The Mystic Weasels, with whom Daz used to perform. Spectators could also watch a charity football match, which included former footballers Louis Carey and Julian Dicks.

The event was organised to raise funds for Barrs Court youngster Oscar Cridge. Oscar, four, has cerebral palsy and needs to raise around £100,000 to pay for surgery and rehab to help him walk without a frame. Football-mad Oscar attended the event with parents Shaun and Emma and was given the honour of scoring a penalty at the football match. He said: “It must be devastating for Oscar’s family to have all these escalating costs to care for him. “The appointments, the operation, the rehabilitation: it all costs so much. Betty celebrates 100th birthday A 100th birthday celebration was made extra special when the local community got involved. Betty Hakes celebrated at home with five generations of family: her daughter Joan, granddaughter Karen, great-grandson Josh and great-great-granddaughter Zenaya. She was also joined by her three carers from Kingswood-based Alina Homecare, who visit daily to help look after Betty. As well as blowing out the candles on her cake, Betty enjoyed opening a huge pile of cards made by Hanham Toddlers preschool. One of her carer’s sons attends the preschool and arranged for the group to send cards to Betty for her big day. A spokesperson for Hanham Toddlers said: “Everyone loved it. “The opportunity to work together with members of our local community like this prompted lots of discussions between practitioners and children regarding families and local community members. “The children asked lots of questions about generational issues and brought their own life experiences to the conversations. “They worked collaboratively and took great pride in their creativity.” Betty, the second of four siblings, grew up in

Have your say on the Masterplan PEOPLE are being asked for their comments in response to a Masterplan for Kingswood, which aims to set the direction of investment into the town centre in the coming years. South Gloucestershire Council says a lot is going on already, with improvements to the Whitfield Tabernacle, the council's purchase of the Kings Chase shopping centre, and improvements to local roads and the Kingswood Park. It has further ambitious plans for the future of the town but wants to make sure that any opportunities that arise for restoring and reviving the area will meet the long-term needs of the community. That is why it has launched an updated Masterplan for Kingswood and will be seeking views until October 10. . Cabinet Councillor Steve Reade, said: “There is no doubt that Kingswood has a bright future. While it has long been a unique community, with a rich history and enviable local cultural assets, even prior to the pandemic, it faced challenges in common with town centres and high streets across the country. This Masterplan, and the input to it that we hope to get from the local community, will help set the area on course to build on its former glory and herald a new

THE VISION FOR OUR FUTURE Distinctly Kingswood – We want to recognise the positive characteristics of Kingswood town centre so that new development reinforces and strengthens a strong sense of the community. A town centre for all - Kingswood town centre should be accessible and attractive to all members of the community. Improvements within the public realm will aim to bring people together, be safe and welcoming. Diversity and vitality - Whilst continuing to support the retail elements of the town centre, we want to encourage a broader range of uses for land and buildings in Kingswood to include business, leisure, residential and community use, to drive a more active local economy. Promoting quality - Change that will be of benefit over the longer term will be determined by the quality of both new development and other interventions. Existing buildings, spaces and facilities that are high in quality should be cherished and retained. Sustainable living – We want to make decisions relating to both the built and natural environment that will have long-term benefits, and to reduce any adverse impacts on climate change. Attracting investment - The Masterplan will promote ideas for change that are beneficial to Kingswood town centre, achievable and attractive to investors both in the public and private sectors.

renaissance. “There is already a lot of positive work under way in Kingswood. We recently purchased the Kings Chase shopping centre so that we and the community have more control over how we can place that hub at the heart of the town centre. The renovation of the Whitfield Tabernacle is an

example of how we also want to preserve the wonderful historical buildings that are such an important part of that sense of Kingswood. “We were very pleased to receive such enthusiastic and constructive input from the community when we consulted on the Future High Streets fund plans last year and I look forward

to hearing from and working with residents, community groups and local businesses and stakeholders as we shape the vision for a Kingswood Town Centre for the future.” The plans for the shopping centre include development of new leisure opportunities alongside new homes and community uses. The council is presenting a preferred traffic re-routing option to support the proposed pedestrianisation of Regent Street, which was broadly supported in previous consultation. The Masterplan also identifies many other opportunity sites. You can come and engage face-to-face with the project staff at the temporary ‘Kingswood Community Hub’ in the Kings Chase Shopping Centre which will be open for three days each week over the next three months. Look out for partners such as Connecting Kingswood, The Whitfield Tabernacle Trust, Circadian Trust and the Police also making appearances in and around the temporary hub as part of this community engagement. You can also of course view materials and respond to the questionnaire online at https:// consultations.southglos.gov.uk/ KingswoodMasterplan. Tabernacle work: Page 9

Fears as ban on new pubs faces axe TOUGH restrictions on new pubs, clubs and bars opening in Kingswood are set to be dropped because there has been no drunken disorder in the area. Council officers say they cannot justify continuing a five-year policy agreed last year, which said there should be a presumption against granting any applications for licensed premises and alcohol sales in the town centre. They say there is no evidence of disturbances since the first lockdown in 2020. But councillors are worried about any change just at the time when the night-time economy is reopening. New Cheltenham ward councillor Kim Scudamore told South Gloucestershire Council’s regulatory committee on July 15 that there was concern over proposals to remove the restriction, known as a community impact area (CIA). He said police had said in November that

the restriction would be useful and effective,. “The policy only came into effect in January and actually doesn’t need to be reviewed for five years. I don’t understand why now we think it’s a good idea to remove it. Are we now saying that because of a lack of evidence because of Covid that we cannot defend that any longer? Any support that local councillors can have in exercising some control over the growth of licensed premises in the Kingswood area would be appreciated.” South Gloucestershire Council licensing team leader Kevin Barley replied at the meeting at Kingswood civic centre: “It’s a fair point. There is a statutory footing for CIAs in terms of evidential requirements. “Now we’ve had another year, with the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, to review that with our colleagues in the police force, there is no evidence to suggest there are any issues of crime and disorder at

licensed premises in the Kingswood CIA. “We will consider any future data and evidence to bring a further report to this committee if it is felt the CIA should be reinstated.” Mr Barley said “Kingswood CIA was based on evidence before the pandemic commenced. Officers of the licensing service have discussed this regularly with the South Gloucestershire police licensing officer and there is agreement the evidential requirement cannot be met. This follows the same pattern we have seen over the past few months where other authorities have removed CIAs from their licensing policies.” The committee agreed to send the proposed changes to the licensing policy out to 12 weeks’ public consultation, although four members abstained. A final decision can be made only by full council. Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporter

Threat to hospital bus link lifted BUSES to Southmead Hospital will keep running following a campaign by the community. As reported in Kingswood in May, the No 17 bus service was at risk of closing at the end of this month if running costs went up. Now the West of England Combined Authority (Weca), which subsidises the part of the route from Kingswood to Keynsham, has announced it will continue to do so. Bus company First will continue running the route. However, most journeys from Keynsham, Longwell Green and Hanham towards Southmead will require passengers to change at Kingswood, with a 10 minute wait between buses. Return journeys will run straight through. Kingswood ward councillor Andrea Reid, Labour, wrote an open letter raising concerns that the loss of the only bus to Southmead and Cossham hospitals would be a “nightmare scenario” for residents without transport. Her letter to Councillor Stephen Reade, who sits on the transport board for Weca, said people might resort to calling ambulances if there was no other way to get to the hospitals. She also organised a petition against the loss of the No 17. In response to the service being rescued, the Labour councillor wrote on her Facebook page: “I hope that common sense intervenes at the Weca Transport Board and that the routes are BOTH made single bus journeys. “In the meantime [I hope]

“If these residents can benefit from a continuous service coming back from Southmead, why do they need to change on their way there? I want to see the maximum possible comfort and ease of my constituents, which is why we need a single service travelling along the full route length in both directions.” Weca Mayor Dan Norris, Labour, said: “I’m delighted it has been possible to save the No 17 bus. “Cllr Andrea Reid has fought a really impactful campaign and led on this with her excellent petition. This has helped greatly in my conversations with First and others as I’ve stressed the fundamental importance of this key service to many

communities. “This shows the importance of a good local councillor making a strong case and I’d like to thank Cllr Andrea Reid for showing strong leadership. But more than this, this is a victory for local people. I know there remain concerns about wait times for a bus connection. I’m hoping in future I can do something about this too. “I will be using the No 17 bus service as an example of why the West of England needs and deserves more money from central government. Levelling up isn’t just a north and south thing, and that is why I will be pushing for government money so that we don’t keep missing out.”

n NEWS THE leader of South Gloucestershire Council has defended £30 million plans to widen the Avon Ring Road, which opponents say would create “monstrous megaroundabouts”. Toby Savage said he wanted to put the record straight after criticism that the money would be better spent on other services, improving the environment or on public transport and active travel. He told a West of England Combined Authority committee meeting that the money for the scheme would come from the Government and would only be allocated if a business case for the changes to five roundabouts on the A4174 was accepted by the Department for Transport. The £30 million scheme would see new lanes built to take through traffic across the middle of three roundabouts – Siston Hill near Mangotsfield, Deanery Road near Warmley and Kingsfield, at Longwell Green – transforming them into what the council calls "throughabouts". The other two – Lyde Green roundabout, near the Bristol and Bath Science Park, and the Rosary roundabout, by Emersons Green shopping centre – would have extra lanes added. South Gloucestershire Council has launched a public consultation on the plans, which it says are aimed at tackling congestion on the A4174 and stopping drivers using nearby residential roads as rat-runs. But they have come under fire from the area's Green Party, which called them "five monstrous mega-roundabouts

will do nothing to tackle the climate emergency and will instead cause environmental damage and an increase in car dependency". New West of England metro mayor Dan Norris also said there was a “strong possibility that just widening roads simply causes increased journeys by car and does not alleviate congestion”. And transport campaigner David Redgewell asked the Weca committee why the plans had gone out to public consultation with “very little if any reference to the importance of walking and cycling and improving bus lanes or priority measures”.

Cllr Savage told the Weca meeting on June 25: “We are doing the consultation to understand how it can benefit as many transport users in getting around the area in their preferred way as much as possible. “I want to be very clear that it is the DfT that has invited us, as the highways authority, to bid for funds that support improvements through the major routes network. “The debate isn’t about whether it’s £30m we should be spending on something else, the debate is whether this £30m will come into the West of England

area. “The idea that this can just be moved around and spent as we see fit as a combined authority is an erroneous statement." The meeting heard pedestrian and cycling improvements and bus priority measures at the junctions were included in the plans. People can have their say on the proposals until August 16, after which the council could make amendments before submitting them to Whitehall for approval. A public event at Emersons Green Village Hall to give people a chance to see and ask questions about the plans was postponed from its original date of July 10 due to the delay in relaxing covid restrictions and is now due to take place on August 3 from 5pm-7.30pm. The consultation can be found online at consultations. southglos.gov.uk/ A4174Improvements. Anyone not online can call 01454 868 000 for more details. An animation of traffic movements now and under the proposed scheme can be found at bit.ly/3Br0vdw. If the DfT approves the project, work is expected to begin in 2022 in phases and take three years to complete. By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Work under way on tabernacle ROOFING work on Whitfield Tabernacle is under way as part of major project to rescue it. The stabilisation and roofing work on the meeting house is expected to take until the autumn to complete. A £700,000 grant was awarded last year by the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) to refurbish the building sufficiently to allow visitors to see inside. Whitfield Tabernacle Trust chair Anthony Hick said: “Getting a roof on the building has always been one of our key first objectives. “That would allow us to at least run a few events and install some information panels, even if full development was not possible. “However, thanks to support from South Gloucestershire Council and Weca it’s looking likely that we’ll be able to go ahead and fully develop the Tabernacle for a range of community uses sooner.”

A ROW has erupted after a council meeting was cancelled at the 11th hour because of sweltering heat and soaring Covid cases. Opposition groups branded the Government “reckless and short-sighted” for refusing to allow remote meetings, following the decision to call off a full council meeting of South Gloucestershire Council on Wednesday evening (July 21). Up to 61 members, as well as officers and members of the public, would have crammed into Kingswood civic centre’s chamber as both temperatures and coronavirus rates across the district remained high. It was postponed on the advice of director of public health Sara Blackmore because of the extreme heat, number of attendees expected and increasing incidents of Covid-19. The ruling Conservative group hit back at the criticism,

saying that holding the meeting posed a health hazard and that the opposition attacks were “redundant” because virtual meetings would require new legislation and that they “could not blame the Government for the weather”. A Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: “The Government has published updated guidance highlighting how councils can minimise the risks of face-to-face meetings.” Councils had to return to face-to-face meetings after the Government decided not to renew emergency coronavirus laws allowing them to be held remotely after May 7, a decision widely criticised at the time by councillors of all parties. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said the meeting would be rescheduled.

Jim thanks kind bank staff A MAN recovering from kidney cancer was delighted to receive a surprise parcel to cheer him up. Jim Reid, a carpenter, often got chatting to cashiers Sharon and Beckie at NatWest bank in Kingswood. Many customers paid by cheque so he’s visited the branch in Regent Street nearly every week for the past 15 years. However, he was taken by surprise when a conversation he had with the counter staff last month led him to receive a gift box from them. Jim, from Grantham Road, said: “I’ve got to know some of the staff quite well over the years. “I was telling two of the staff, Sharon and Beckie, that I had cancer of the kidney late last year and had my right kidney removed. “I told them I’d just finished 40 hours of chemotherapy. “I thought nothing more of

New 'nature corridor' A NATURE corridor in Kingswood Park will attract bugs, birds - and children. Pupils at The Park primary school in Hollow Road spent their summer term transforming an area of the park so other children can study nature. Children carried out a biodiversity check, discovering that the area was already home to frogs, beetles, woodlice and grasshoppers. The pupils created their ideal designs for the area, coming up with bug hotels, fountains, flowers, benches and bird houses. They then set to work clearing brambles, making pathways and building bug hotels. A grant from UWE and support from some of its students allowed hedgerows to be planted. Scannable QR codes were attached to trees so people can find out more about native tree species.

Old toys- or valuable collectables? LEGO is one of the most successful toy lines of all time. Founded in 1932 initially as a toy company making wooden toys, they first started making plastic bricks in 1947. The name ‘Lego’ comes from the Danish phrase ‘Leg Godt’ which literally translates to ‘Play Well’; for us in the auction world – it also sells well! In 1978 Lego launched its first sets containing the now famous minifigures, and those early 1980s Lego sets now pass hands for hundreds – and sometimes thousands – of pounds. Given the popularity of Lego in the last fifty years, its unsurprising that as an auctioneer I encounter it quite often. Usually, it’s a tub of assorted bricks, well played with by two or three generations of the same family. But every now and then it’s a boxed set, or even better an unused set. I have met and spoken to many customers over the years who tell tales of finding old Lego in the loft and giving it to the grandchildren to play with. Such remarks are often met with a worried look, as usually they have just given something very valuable away. More often than not that ‘old Lego’ set in the loft is worth a few hundred pounds, whereas a new Lego set can be purchased for considerably less than this. Take this recent sales result for example (pictured) – released in 1989 the ‘Black Seas Barracuda’ Pirate ship sold in our Toy Auction for £260. It was used, but complete, and still had its original box. Lego’s latest Pirate ship released last year can be purchased brand new for just £90. Had the Black Seas Barracuda been an unused, still-sealed, set it would be worth over £1,000. Its not just Lego either – most classic 1970s & 1980s toys are now worth a small fortune – Star Wars, Action Man, Ghostbusters, Masters Of The Universe etc. They all have huge collectable value. So, when it comes to ‘old toys’ – my advice is simple – come and get them valued, as you may just find those toys are now considered valuable collectors’ items! Andy Stone East Bristol Auctions

Talking to children at Parkwall Primary

MP Chris visits schools

One for the album at Beacon Rise Primary

KINGSWOOD MP visited two local primary schools before the end of the academic year. He dropped in to Parkwall Primary in Cadbury Heath and Beacon Rise Primary in Kingswood to talk about his role in the constituency and in Parliament and to learn about their concerns. It was the MP's second visit to Parkwall during the year, having opened their library in April. He gave an assembly and children asked questions about issues such as animal welfare and caring for our planet.

Headteacher Gary Risdale said: “Mr Skidmore asked what the children would like to improve about the area and they discussed realistic opportunities to add and improve to Banjo Island. The children valued the chance to meet an aspirational person from their community.” At Beacon Rise, Mr Skidmore talked with class 5DP about topics such as the parliamentary system, world events and climate change. Pupils read the MP poems they had written and told him about local and world issues they feel are important . l

Winners: Alice Smith's design, above, and Anneliese Warburton's entry, right

Children's dream homes HOME designers of the future put pen to paper to show developers what they’d like to see in a new housing development. Pupils at Christ Church primary school in Hanham entered a competition run by Homes England. The organisation is running a public consultation on proposed housing on the former Kleeneze site near the school. Homes England asked to speak to the children about the proposals as part of the public consultation programme for the project. They aimed to raise awareness of the built environment and give the youngsters an opportunity to ask questions and give feedback. Infants were asked to draw a house they’d like to live in, while juniors had to create an attractive neighbourhood design. The Best House Design award was won by

Anneliese Warburton, six, while Alice Smith, 10, won the Best Neighbourhood Design award. The children were presented with their trophies and certificates at the final assembly of term. Homes England’s project manager was impressed by their use of bright colours, the level of detail and the descriptions of their designs. Members of the project team delivered Zoom presentations to the children, tailored by age group. They covered topics including the need for more homes across the country, the mix of homes required to suit people at different life stages, and showed the children images of what the housing development might look like. The children asked intelligent questions, including what building materials would be

used and how long construction would take. Headteacher Neil McKellar-Turner said: “We are currently redesigning our curriculum so that our children are provided with meaningful and authentic learning opportunities that enable them to make links to the world in which they live. “This is an exciting project to be involved with as the children have had the opportunity to have a voice in the redevelopment of their own local area. “This is exactly the sort of experience we are keen to provide for all of our pupils so that they can become knowledgeable, informed and responsible citizens of the future.”

There's still time for you to have a say

Chris Skidmore, right, learns about the proposed development

KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore has visited the former Kleeneze site off Anstey’s Road in Hanham to discuss redevelopment plans. Mr Skidmore met members of the Homes project team, who are working to submit an outline planning application to South Gloucestershire Council later in the year and are looking for the local community’s views and suggestions. The team how they intend to create a positive community space, for example in the inclusion of a ‘working hub’ in the plans, which will function as a space for commercial or community units. Project Director John Boutwood of Homes England said: “The aim is to create a vibrant new community comprising a broad range of

much-needed homes, suitable for a wide range of people in different stages of their life. 35% of the homes will be affordable, in line with the council’s housing policy. We will also provide flexible commercial or community space. This project represents a unique opportunity for Hanham and we are keen to hear what local people think.” Chris said: “I was impressed to hear of the plans for this site, which has unfortunately been unused for many years. My visit was useful in gaining an understanding of Homes England’s vision for the site and I am pleased that the former Kleeneze factory will be an asset to the local community going forwards.” To find out more about the proposed development, visit www.ansteysroad.co.uk

Hanham Photographic Society has been continuing online during Covid-19. We have been unable to include any of members' pics this month due to shortage of space.

Council teams up with housing company PLANS to build homes on the site of the former Grange School in Warmley have taken a big step forward. South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet has approved teaming up with Bath & North East Somerset Council’s construction company Aequus for the project, and others in Frenchay, Hambrook, Emersons Green, Thornbury and Filton. The council and Aequus will have to seek planning permission and put forward business cases for each development, with the council having the option to cancel the arrangement at any point. Profits will be shared. Councillors also approved an extra £400,000 for costs of securing planning permission, making land ready for sale and legal advice. Opposition Lib Dem group leader Cllr Claire Young asked what work had been done to identify the right type of housing need in each area rather than allowing the development partner to maximise profits regardless. Conservative cabinet member for corporate resources Cllr Ben Burton said: “I fully agree that the council has responsibility not only to work for the largest capital receipt but that when we are working in a joint venture we have at the forefront of our minds other council objectives and aims.” He said these included tackling the climate emergency, ensuring the types of homes

met communities’ needs and ensuring the housing went to local people. “I am pleased to see that level of flexibility which allows the council to review before it proceeds at each of those three stages,” Cllr Burton said. Cabinet member for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure Cllr Steve Reade said: “As a council our housing delivery and affordable homes figures continue to surpass targets year on year. “This is why we are in a position to push for a higher quality development through joint ventures, not only helping to provide better homes for people but also to benefit our other aims and goals such as ensuring homes are more energy efficient, thereby supporting our climate emergency goals.” Cabinet member for communities and local place Cllr Rachael Hunt said: “It’s great to see we are continuing our efforts around joint ventures, giving us greater input and influence to support our goals around community shaping without over-exposing the council and taxpayers’ money to unnecessary risk.” In December, cabinet decided not to set up the council’s own housing company but proceed with joint venture partnerships to build homes on its land. The shortlist of six sites was whittled down from 100 plus.

Proceed with caution LIFE should not be lived looking out of the rearview mirror. Nevertheless, events in the last 18 months will stay with us, most certainly for life. For many, personal loss is a feeling that will reinforce this. Whatever your thoughts about the Government's decision to remove social distancing measures, we must all bear this in mind– it is really not over yet. We are still in the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK vaccination programme has been a remarkable success. Ellacombe Pharmacy-Bristol Travel Clinic NHS Covid vaccination programme in the Longwell Green Community Centre has been built on remarkable community spirit. Administering over 30k vaccine doses to help play a significant part in the effort to protect our community. A sobering thought is that

jabs alone will not be enough to stop the virus from spreading. The protection offered by the initial vaccination will require booster doses for the more vulnerable. No vaccine is ever 100%, even before we start discussing virus variants. We are already seeing double-vaccinated people catching the virus and passing it on. This is the reason for the free lateral flow testing roll-out, so people carrying the virus with no symptoms can be made aware. But please do remember if you have symptoms: cough, fever, loss of taste or smell, sneezing, sore throat, diarrhoea, you will need an NHS Covid-19 PCR test. So as we look to enjoy our summer, our actions mustn't cut short the freedom we now have or, even worse, put people in danger. Mask wearing, hand

This is how our community is getting through this - don't let us down.

200th anniversary of Ellacombe chimes

Ada Thomas with the Ellacombe Chimes device

A BITTON schoolgirl made the news when St Mary's Church celebrated a significant anniversary. Ada Thomas, a Year 6 pupil at The Meadows Primary School, had the honour of taking part in an event to mark 200 years of the Ellacombe Chimes. This bellringing device was invented at St Mary's in 1821 by the Reverend Henry Thomas. The apparatus allows one person to ring all the church bells. Ada, a bellringer at the church for three years, demonstrated the Ellacombe Chimes apparatus at the bicentenary celebrations and also for the ITV and BBC local news. The school children also made flag bunting that was displayed at the event. Headteacher Joy Mounter said: "Everyone at The Meadows is very proud of Ada."

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB FRYS held their Triples Day competition Saturday 10th July after missing the 2020 competition. The format saw 6 teams playing each other once in games of 6 ends, with points awarded for each end won and 6 for winning games. Light rain continued through the morning session in which the teams of Steve Buck, Vernon Hopkins, Ken Stewart and Stephen Day, Jeff Budd, Tricia Shaw established themselves as front runners with comfortable wins in their first two games. The two teams met before lunch, with Steve Buck’s rink 4 shot winners giving them the lunchtime lead. A one-shot win in their fourth game saw them hold a 6-point lead and a favourable draw playing the 6th placed team in the final game. The battle for second place saw Stephen Day’s rink on 33 points meeting the rink of Christopher Day, Peter Fiedor and Pat Slavin who sat in third on 31 points. Christopher Day’s rink opened the final game with 5 shots on the first end, putting themselves in the driving seat. On the rink next door, Steve Buck’s rink found themselves in trouble. Despite the early setback, Stephen Day’s rink a nervy 9 unanswered shots in the remaining 5 ends taking 11 of the 12 points on offer. With the Steve Buck, Vernon Hopkins and Ken Stewart rink only scoring 2 points, it left Stephen Day, Jeff Budd and Tricia Shaw all taking their first triples title with 44 points, with Jeff and Tricia winning their first ever title.

Triples Day winners Jeff Budd, Stephen Day, Tricia Shaw Thursday 8th July: After a 41-65 loss at Canford and 33-67 loss at Long Ashton, third placed Henleaze ‘A’ were the visitors to Somerdale with Frys looking to snap their 5-game losing streak. After a close start, rink 3 fell behind, but with rink 2 on good form and rink 1 holding tight, Frys were able to hold the lead. Rink 3 closed the deficit, but rink 1 started to fall behind. Rink 2 continued their dominant form, only conceding 3 shots, scoring 28 of their own. Frys took 6 points from the 5036 win. Scores: Rink 1: 13-17; Rink 2: 28-3; Rink 3: 13-17; Frys 50-36 Henleaze ‘A’ (6-4). Thursday 15th July: Imperial visited Frys as the home side looked

for back-to-back wins. Rinks 2 and 3 pulled away to early leads. Rink 1 was tight seeing both sides scoring only singles. A dominant performance on rink 2 saw them continue pulling away. After 13 straight singles for second time this season, Frys broke the streak with a 2 on the 14th end. Going into the final end, Frys held a 5 shot lead. Imperial could only score 3 shots leaving Frys with the rink 1. Imperial’s efforts were in vain as rinks 2 and 3 never let up, with Frys putting up 32-9 score on rink 3, and a remarkable game on rink 2 saw them score 40 shots and conceding only 3 as Frys ran away to a 83-19 win on a night which set season records across all 4 divisions with rink 2 getting the highest rink score, biggest winning margin and equalled the lowest shots conceded set by Frys last week; highest team total, lowest shots conceded by a team this season and biggest margin of victory. The 10 points from a remarkable night lifted Frys to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 11-9; Rink 2: 40-3; Rink 3: 32-7; Frys 83-19 Imperial (8-2). Frys followed up with a tight game away at Avonvale ‘A’. Frys defended the 5 shot lead on the last for an 8-point night with a 50-47 win and remain 9th. • We are open to new members. Friendship on the bowling green WHILE there have been some cancellations of Keynsham Bowling Club fixtures against other clubs, the green in Keynsham Park has been getting increased usage as a result of internal competitions and cup games. The first Sunday competition was a two wood triples for the Ray Percival Cup which was won by Maureen Cavill, David Hockney and Roy Wilton who narrowly beat Mary Millard, Martin Barrett and Dave Bendall. Both teams finished with 42 points, tied at +7 on shots with the winners decided by the head to head match scoring 9 shots to 8. The club also played host to a team from South Oxford who stopped off on their way home from Devon. In a 6 rink mixed match Keynsham won 4 rinks, South Oxford 1 with

the other tied, the shots totalling 111-88 in Keynsham’s favour. Both teams gathered for a photograph and it was agreed the result came somewhat secondary to a lovely social afternoon. Towards the end of the month the Captain’s Charity BBQ was held when members were entertained by a young lady called Lizz Lipscombe playing her electric violin. With her repertoire covering everything from classic to pop she moved among the audience seated both inside and outside, truly living up to her name as a Wandering Minstrel. Combining the profit from the BBQ with proceeds from a raffle, plus an auction for a bottle of whiskey, over £500.00 was raised for Parkinson’s UK.

n KEYNSHAM Walking Football have received a set of kit from Parkwall Pre-School, presented by managing director, Richard Nichols. The kit will be used by the club when they enter a second team in Somerset FA’s Over 60s Walking Football League. They already have a team in Somerset’s Over 50s league and another in Gloucester FA’s Over 70s league. The club, with a membership of about 150, plays at the AJN Stadium in Keynsham - the home of Keynsham Town - and runs sessions for Over 65s on Tuesdays and Over 50s on Fridays, both 10 to 11. More details about the club can be found at https://keynshamtownfc.co.uk/walkingfootball-home/

Altogether £1,600 was raised for charity Young Lives vs Cancer, formerly known as CLIC Sargent. The event was organised by Lucy Atkinson, a personal trainer from Oldland Common,
