Concern over waste sites

WASTE has piled up at recycling 'bring banks', causing a potential health crisis, councillors heard.

Tory opposition leader Cllr Sam Bromiley told South Gloucestershire Council's cabinet that the 24-hour drop-off points in Cadbury Heath and Warmley, set up because of the strike by refuse workers, had been left to overfill.

Cllr Bromiley (Parkwall & Warmley) said in a statement to the meeting on July 10: “The current situation is disgraceful and residents are angry. Rats, foxes and seagulls have torn bags apart. The

wind has blown plastic and rubbish onto nearby roads, gardens and play parks."

Mark King, service director, said the staffed deposit points elsewhere were working well but the sites at The Batch and the Warmley community centres were unmanned, so people were going and dumping rubbish there - "effectively fly-tipping".

The Lib-Lab administration apologised and said it hoped talks between Unite the union and waste contractor Suez would resolve the deadlock. Rubbish piles up: Page 5

Unveiled: Revamp plans for High Street

PROPOSALS for improving the look and feel of Hanham High Street have been revealed.

Tbe package of improvements has been drawn up by South Gloucestershire Council after listening to local people.

Improvements include:

• Refurbishing the public toilets

• Making it more attractive to walk and cycle with new paving and the installation of bike stands

• More seating

• The installation of new signs to make it easier to find local places of interest

• New planters and increased planting in the verges.

The improvements, totalling almost £400,000, will be funded through the West of England Combined Authority's Love our High Street fund.

The council also plans to work with the local community to create public art on some properties along the High Street.

In 2020 South Gloucestershire Council carried out a survey asking local people what they thought of Hanham High Street and what improvements they would like to see. Areas of importance identified included improving trees, plants and green space, improving paving and the inclusion of additional outside seating.

Since then, there has been

ongoing engagement with the Hanham High Street Partnership Group, which includes Hanham Parish Council and local traders.

Councillor Leigh Ingham, Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Place, said: “We are committed to supporting our local high streets. Our high streets have faced a number of challenges in recent years including the Covid pandemic, the rising popularity of online shopping and the cost-

of-living crisis but we hope we can help local traders and high streets find opportunities in these challenging times.

“I am pleased that we have been able to secure this funding to help make a difference in Hanham, improving the character and overall look and feel which in turn will bring benefit to local residents, visitors to the area and local businesses.”

Work is expected to start on the improvements later this year.

People interested in keeping up to date with the project can sign up for the new Hanham High Street newsletter. This can be done via the project website.

The proposals were due to be on show at Hanham Library throughout July (during library opening hours). People wanting to find out more can visit www. southglos.gov.uk/hanham

Hunt is on for the Kingswood Elephant

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have been commissioned to look into a 132-year-old mystery - the burial of an elephant in Kingswood.

The study comes as part of the regeneration of the town centre.

Local legend has it that the Victorian elephant belonging to Bostock and Wombwell’s travelling ‘beast show’ died and was buried in Kingswood.

Now Wessex Archaeology has been asked to carry out a geophysical survey.

Tom Richardson, terrestrial geophysicist at Wessex Archaeology, said: “Searching for Victorian elephant burials isn’t our usual fare but a grave of that size would leave a large hole and would certainly be identifiable with the Ground Penetrating Radar equipment we will be using to survey the site. Watch this space!”

Councillor Chris Willmore, cabinet member with responsibility for planning,

regeneration and infrastructure at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Our work as part of the Kingswood regeneration project has presented us with

a unique opportunity ahead of the high street pedestrianisation work. We’re excited to see what archaeologists may uncover and if we can finally solve this

local mystery or find some new mysteries to solve.”

Purported to have been buried in the area of Whitefield’s Tabernacle or Holy Trinity Church, the elephant is said to have died in 1891 from yew leaf poisoning. Although no historical sources reference the death or burial of an elephant in the area, the Kingswood elephant is etched in local memory.

Alan Bryant, curator at Kingswood Museum, said: “I first heard about the Kingswood elephant burial in the 1970s when I was doing my rounds as a local milkman. Since then, I have had countless conversations and debates with local people about it. I remember a new mains sewer pipe was installed in the 1980s and I made a point of having a look to see if there were any anomalies in the ground. Alas, nothing to report but I for one am delighted at the potential of discovering the legendary Kingswood Elephant burial.”

Rubbish piles up as bin strike continues

PEOPLE in the Kingswood area still have to take their own recycling to drop-off points as the bin strike continues.

Food waste, green bin, bulky waste and recycling collections have been suspended since June 26 because of a pay dispute between the union Unite and refuse collection company Suez.

Some staff are still working so fortnightly black bin rounds have continued.

Union members rejected an 8 per cent pay offer from Suez for this year, calling it a "significant real terms pay cut", as it is well below the rate of inflation.

Suez believes its offer is "fair and competitive" but says Unite has asked for a 15 per cent increase this year, which would mean an overall rise of 22 per cent over two years.

South Gloucestershire Council leader Claire Young and co-leader Ian Boulton said: “We have no legal or contractual power to force Suez or Unite to the table, but it is not fair or reasonable for the council or local residents to be held hostage to negotiations that are not yet happening.

"We are calling on both sides to be true to their word and sit down to resolve their

dispute now.”

Unite regional officer Ken Fish said he was hopeful talks could resume soon, saying: "We were struggling to get the employer to engage with us and have meaningful dialogue.

“But I have been contacted by Suez and they are trying to table proposed dates for us to reconvene some form of pay negotiation, which I’m hoping will be a positive progression from where we are now.”

Suez has again apologised to residents for disruption caused by the strikes.

The council has set up 'deposit points'

for people to take food waste and recycling during the strike.

Among these are Page Road short stay car park in Staple Hill, Cleve RFC car park at Cossham Street, Mangotsfield, and the Lyde Green Park and Ride in Willowherb Road, which are open from 8am to 2pm on weekdays. 'Bring banks' have also been opened in Warmley and Barrs Court, but there have been problems at these sites because they are open 24 hours a day and have been "left to overfill".

Conservative Cllr Sam Bromiley posted pictures of dumped rubbish at the sites online and at a cabinet meeting in July he called on the LibDem/Labour run council to act.

The council's Sort It centres in Mangotsfield, Yate and Thornbury have extra facilities to take more recycling and black bin waste, but long queues have been reported during the strike action.

A spokesperson said: "Fortnightly black bin collections continue to be prioritised to ensure the disposal of waste such as personal hygiene items, medical waste, nappy sacks and pet waste. Please put your black bin out on your normal scheduled collection day. Please do not put any other containers out."

E-SCOOTERS on the streets of Hanham and Longwell Green will have a new look in the autumn.

The West of England Combined Authority is replacing current operator Voi, which has operated the hire scheme since it launched, with a new contractor, German company Tier.

It means the distinctive pink fleet of e-scooters which has been on the streets - and parked on pavements - since 2020 will be replaced by 4,000 new green 'WESTscoot' e-scooters, 1,500 e-bikes and 20 electric cargo bikes that can be hired by businesses.

Voi says it was "disappointing" to be leaving the region but changes to the new contract for the region would have left it running "at a loss".

Metro Mayor Dan Norris, who announced the changes at the end of June, said the new operator would be fined if parking problems continue.

Mr Norris said the contract with Tier would bring in an estimated £9.7 million for public transport spending in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset.

He said clauses in the contract would address parking concerns, and that 100 new e-scooter parking racks would be provided.

Mr Norris said: “WESTscoot must build on the successes of e-scooters in our West of England region, which has been one of the most successful trials

All change for e-scooter fleet

anywhere in Europe.

“But it must also address the legitimate concerns residents often voice over poor and irresponsible e-scooter parking.

“Given our very ambitious West of England net-zero 2030 target, it is vital that these bright green electric WESTscoot, WESTbike and WESTcargo e-vehicles become a common and welcome sight across our region, for they are an important means to allow residents to reduce car use or give it up completely if they should so choose.”

He said contract clauses included “parking performance monitored on a monthly basis, with penalties on the operator if high standards aren’t met”.

They include stricter requirements to keep vehicles

parked tidily within designated bays, and agreed numbers.

An exact date for the changeover has not been announced.

Tier’s Northern Europe vice-president Fred Jones said: "The expansion of the service to include e-bikes and e-cargo bikes makes it easier for the people of the West of England to choose to leave their car at home and pick the perfect vehicle for their journey, whether that is commuting, going to see friends or even doing the weekly shop.

“We are proud to have been selected as the operator for this UK-leading flagship service and look forward to the full launch this autumn.”

Voi UK, Ireland and France general manager Jack Samler

said: “We are very proud of what we’ve achieved in Bristol and Bath and the legacy we’ve built. It is disappointing to be leaving these cities. There are several differences in the new contract compared to our existing contract, many of which will impact on our overall costs.

“At Voi, we believe schemes must be financially sustainable for operators to allow for continued investment in rider experience, safety and integration with other road users and pedestrians.

“This is critical for the industry long-term.

“We are not prepared to run any shared e-scooter trial at a loss."

Swim club breaks national qualifiers record again

SOUNDWELL Swimming

Club has smashed its record for producing national championship qualifiers, for the second year running.

Last year the club sent 11 swimmers to the English National and British meets, as it celebrated its 60th birthday.

However this year the club, which trains at Kingswood Leisure Centre and Winterbourne Academy, has built on last year’s success, increasing the number of qualifiers to 15.

The young swimmers will compete in Sheffield in late July and August at the separate British and English Age Group

National Championships, and in Rotherham for the English National Open Water Championships, which involve the top 2% of young swimmers across the county.

Training under head coach Jon Wills, swimmers have also qualified for all three relay events in the 14 to 16-year-old boys' category at the British National Championships

The club is hoping for national medal success to build on its club record-breaking county and regional successes this year already.

Club chair Sarah Taylor said: "We are incredibly proud of all of our swimmers who have

qualified this year for National Championships.

"These young people train seven days a week, all year round, and it is brilliant to see all their hard work pay off."

The club takes new swimmers through its Swim Academy, all the way through to national qualifiers, and many of this

year’s qualifiers learned to swim at the club.

Sarah said: "The club moto is #oneclubonefamily, and it is celebrating the success of all its swimmers in this exceptional year of achievement."

Taekwondo looks to future Rail ticket office closure plan fury

BRISTOL Taekwondo School, which is based in Kingswood, hosted an event at which participants had the chance test electronic armour.

They were also able to try the electronic scoring system, the same as that used in the Olympic Games and international events.

The competition, attended by clubs from Chippenham, London, Milton Keynes and Newport, started with Junior then adult Poomsae (Patterns). This was followed by an E-sport event where a series of competitive games were played using electronic striking targets which displayed results on a monitor. This proved very popular.

The next part of the event was sparring with electronic armour, which is used by top competitors. Very few clubs have this equipment because of the cost. The Kingswood club has bought two sets of electronic armour with software and its next aim is to try to raise funds for a set of

electronic headguards, which will cost more than £1000.

The British Taekwondo School is popular, with a number of overseas instructors and students joining the ranks. The club has plenty of equipment including full matting, plus many sets of non electronic training armour and an array of striking shields and pads. The

main instructor is a 9th Dan Grandmaster from Warmley, who trained and qualified in Korea and who also sits on the board of the National Governing Body. The club trains on Tuesday evenings 7.30 pm at the 17 Bristol Scout Hall on Two Mile Hill Road and offers a free trial sessions. email: info@ bristoltaekwondo.co.uk

METRO Mayor Dan Norris has urged a government minister to be “flexible and pragmatic” as he raised deep concerns over rapid plans to close rail ticket offices across the West of England.

In a face to face meeting with Rail Minister Huw MerrimanMr Norris explained how residents had contacted him up in arms about the plans.

A 21-day consultation was held last month into the proposed closures, with the proposals apparently pushed by ministers.

The affected ticket offices include those at Filton Abbey Wood, Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa, Bristol Parkway, Yate, Oldfield Park and Keynsham where an estimated 600,000 paper tickets were sold last year.

Council offers increased support for veterans

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has agreed a new action plan to build on its successful work supporting veterans in the area. An updated annual Armed Forces Covenant Report for 2022/23 was adopted by the council’s cabinet in June. The report notes the success of the council’s work over the past year and presents a new action plan up until 2025, setting out 24 actions committed to by the council to help build upon its work and proactively deliver against the Armed Forces Covenant Duty. These actions include continuing support for the South Gloucestershire Veterans Support Service and South West Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, relationship building with the Armed Forces Community, and raising awareness amongst staff of the key barriers faced by the community, the actions being taken to address them and expectations of staff in

delivering against the barriers. The report shows that 87 veterans have been supported over the past 12 months, which is an increase of 61% from the previous year. There have also been significant increases in the amount of face to face and virtual meetings and peer support group sessions held, and the number of veterans

signposted to volunteering opportunities.

The South Gloucestershire Veterans Support Service is commissioned by the council and delivered locally by two organisations – Soldiers’, Sailors’ & Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA) and Assistplus. This approach has been successful in delivering

services to a diverse range of recipients.

Councillor Alison Evans, armed forces champion and cabinet member for cost of living, equalities and public health at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “South Gloucestershire Council aims to improve outcomes across all aspects of life for the Armed Forces Community and we are extremely proud to work with a wide range of organisations and partners in serving them.

“We fully intend to go beyond minimum compliance with the Covenant Duty - in addition to education, housing and health, we also treat employment as a key area in which the experiences of the community are proactively assessed and addressed.

“A higher number of veterans have been helped during the last year and they have reported being happier, less anxious and less isolated as a result of the support they received.”

Farewell to popular taxi driver Ron

RON Rosedam, a popular Hanham taxi driver for nearly 40 years, has died.

“Ron was legendary not only for his car’s leopard skin furry seats, humbug mints and Shaggy playlist, but also for his cheerful chat and dependable driving. Ron loved getting to know people from all walks of life. It was the perfect job for him,” his daughter Sophie said.

Ron, who retired four years ago, around the time of his 80th birthday, was one of the Windrush generation. He arrived in the UK in November 1962 from Jamaica and died on June 24, just two days after the 75th anniversary celebrations of those who came from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after World War Two.

In a memoir written for his three grandchildren, Ron wrote of the shock of his arrival.

“I had never felt cold the likes of which I experienced during my first winter in the UK. It was November 1962 … one of the coldest winters on record. It was the kind of wind that penetrates not only layers of clothes but flesh and bone!”

Ron started his working life at an engineering company, then as a welder. After training and perfecting his skills, he gained a job at Rolls-Royce where he worked on

parts used on Concorde. In the 1980s he worked for six years at engineering company. His attention to detail and steady hand meant he also worked doing painting and decorating, but he will be best known for his decades driving taxis.

Making good friends was not always easy. As he recalled in his memoir, when he first started working in the UK “some of the blokes would call me the ‘N-word’ and other things … I was never offended. From my point of view, they just didn’t know any better”.

Sophie said: “His calm and forgiving manner was a strong part of his character and he gained a strong sense of community

with family members in Bristol and abroad and friends he gained over the years. He was a doting father and dedicated granddad to three grandchildren, who he was delighted to introduce to his hometown of St. Annes in Jamaica during a family holiday in April.

“Ron was a big fan of cricket, dominos and dancing. On the day he passed, he spent the morning shimmying across the kitchen, throwing his best moves to his favourite records.”

A Nine Night celebration of Ron’s life was held at the Rose Green Centre in Whitehall on July 21. His funeral will be held on August 8 at 11am at Bethel Church, Church Road, Bristol.

Official tribute to skateboarder Jamie backed

A SKATEPARK created with money raised in memory of a Mangotsfield teenager could soon be officially named after him - 12 years after it was built.

Jamie Clapp was only 13 when he was killed in a plane crash in 2007.

His father Gordon wanted a lasting memorial to his son, who loved skateboarding and BMX riding, and with Jamie’s friends he campaigned to secure £100,000 from local councillors, South Gloucestershire Council and the Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions partnership.

The skate park opened in 2011 and Gordon regularly visits, meeting Jamie’s friends there each year around the anniversary of his death on July 3.

The fundraisers always believed the park officially carried Jamie’s name - even the signs at the site call it the ‘Jamie Lee Clapp Memorial Skatepark’.

But when council plans to transform the area around the skatepark were confirmed last

year, it emerged that Jamie is not recognised in its official registered name, Emersons Green Skate Park.

The council said at the time that the name could be changed, and this has now moved a step closer after all three ward councillors supported the idea.

New Labour councillors Katrina Al-Hassan and Ron Hardie said: “Gordon has campaigned for a long time to

make it a really nice space for kids in the community, and having the official name for his son will be a lovely way to remember Jamie.”

Conservative Rachael Hunt said: “It would be a fitting tribute to his memory, and I will take it up with council officers at the earliest opportunity.”

Gordon, who is gravely ill with oesophageal cancer, joined more than 20 of Jamie’s friends

at the park to remember him, weeks before what would have been his 30th birthday.

Gordon said: “The park was built in memory of my son and it’s got to say the name - that’s why we raised the money. I’m glad it’s being appreciated and the councillors have agreed to do the right thing.”

Jamie’s friend Ollie Nemeth, who chaired the skate park fundraising committee, said he was “filled with immense joy” that the official record could now be put straight.

He said: “The skatepark holds significant sentimental value, being a place where Jamie’s spirit thrives and where the community comes together.”

Another friend, Harry Veldkamp, said: “Seeing this skatepark bring joy to people of all ages is great to see - I’m sure Jamie would be proud of us all!”

n AROUND THE WIs

AVON FEDERATION

MEMBERS of Avon Federation of Women’s Institutes (AFWI) continue to keep themselves busy; not only with their own WIs, but also attending events organized by AFWI (the county level of WI).

In April there was a holiday to Cambridgeshire, incorporating trips to Kings College Chapel, The Imperial War Museum at Duxford, and Knebworth House, amongst others. In May the annual Federation Quiz took place. Thirty-three teams of 4 joined us at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall for an evening of testing their knowledge (and decision making when team members propose different answers). The winning team were members from Stockwood WI. May was also the timing of the annual Meeting of National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI). This year it took place in St David’s Hall in Cardiff. This is the meeting where every individual WI in the country is represented by a delegate who votes on their behalf. They vote on constitutional matters, necessary for a charity, and also on the chosen resolution for the year. This year’s resolution relates to cleaner rivers, the wording being “Water quality in our rivers is shameful. Legally, designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities and Government to make, support and promote applications for official designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be as instrumental to the clean up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches”. The vote in favour of this resolution was 84%.

Days out were on the agenda in June. One was a coach trip to Hinkley Point ‘C’, and one was a steam train journey around the Cotswolds. Very different days out, but both very much enjoyed by members who took part. As we progressed into July, we had an evening of pétanque with City of Bath Pétanque Club, where members enjoyed a taster session of the game. We also had the annual Federation Lunch, where members enjoy a meal and hear guest speakers. This year’s lunch was held at Mendip Spring Golf Club in Congresbury, and the speakers were Gill Wilding of the ‘Friends for Parents’ volunteer initiative at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, and Maria Kane OBE, the Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, based at Southmead Hospital. A related theme of healthcare, however very different, but both very interesting.

These events were all possible because of the work done by Trustees and Team Members of Avon Federation. If you are a WI member and would like to help, we would be happy to see you. If you are not yet a WI member, then the first step is to join. Please ring our office on 0117 9864782 to find out details of WIs near to you.

HANHAM AFTERNOON WI

OUR July meeting was very well attended as usual. Our speaker this month was Robert Tinker, his talk was “Bristol Nooks and Crannies.” We were shown an extensive collection of photographs of old and new structures, buildings, statues and street art. Which covered the history of Bristol's

earliest beginnings with the original site of Bristol Bridge (no longer a wooden bridge),up until the most recent new building of the Bristol Beacon (formerly the Bristol Colston Hall) We saw unusual gargoyles, and the memorial stone to Tom the church cat who kept the mice, rats and pigeons in check at St. Mary Redcliffe Church from 1912 – 1927 He was buried by his congregational friends beside the church door where he had been originally found. As Bristol seems to attract the World's most famous graffiti artists, there were plenty of photgraphs to see. The President thanked Robert Tinker for an informative talk.

Later this month several of our Members will be joining with other local WI Members on a coach trip to Poole in Dorset to visit RNLI College. This is the home of RNLI training. Where volunteers from across the UK and Ireland train to become able crew members.

We are not having an official August meeting, but will be meeting for an afternoon tea in Saltford. Having met there before we found that the food was good and our wonderful company of ladies even better.

We shall be meeting in September for our Harvest Lunch. We are hoping that we shall be blessed with lots of autumn produce and plants. This will be at Hanham Community Centre at 1.30pm on 11th September New members are always welcome. If you are interested and would like to know more, please get in touch by email: hanhamafternoonwi@ outlook.co.uk or telephone : 01179325027

RODWAY RUBIES WI

THIS year we are supporting the Great Western Air Ambulance charity and held a cards and plant sale in June on its behalf. We are planning a coffee morning in August to raise further funds.

Our speaker in June was a former policeman who gave us an insight into ‘A Bristol Murder’ in the 1980s, and this month we have two policewomen talking about cyber crime and fraud, very much a 2020s concern.

A coach trip to view the Pam Lewis Gardens on July 4 was well supported, and included an enjoyable lunch. More members are off to the Hippodrome to revel in Kevin Clifton Strictly shortly. Further theatre visits, a BBQ and Avon Gorge River trip are all planned in the coming months.

Members also take part in Avon Federation events, most recently the Federation Quiz. We entered two teams of four and both did very well. Congratulations to them.

Several members joined Wick and Doynton WI at their June Barn Dance - great fun and a few sore feet afterwards.

A coffee, crochet and chat morning at Warmley Station was organised to provide a beginner’s guide to the craft - and sample the cakes, of course! We have craft initiatives planned and are always open to new projects that members want to try.

Our meetings take place every third Monday evening of the month at 7.30pm, except August, in the United Reform Church on Cossham Street, Mangotsfield. We supported the URC with cakes for their coffee and plant sale during the Mangotsfield Festival, in aid of the Jessie May Trust.

Children urged to join reading challenge

CHILDREN in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

Pupils from Barley Close Community Primary School took part in an educational workshop run by the University of the West of England’s School of Engineering at Downend Library to kick off the holiday reading event.

Libraries and the Reading Agency have partnered with the Youth Sport Trust for this year's challenge, called ‘Ready, Set, Read!’, which has a sports, games and play theme to highlight the positive impact that reading, keeping active, and having fun have on a child’s development.

From now until September 9 children aged between four and 11 can sign up at their local library during staffed opening hours and collect a free goodie bag to get them started.

They then read books of their choice over the summer holidays and collect stickers to complete a collectors’ card, receiving a medal and certificate once it’s completed.

The aim of the challenge is to help children become more independent readers and improve reading confidence over the summer break from school.

Council cabinet member for libraries Leigh Ingham said: “We know that children's reading can dip during the long summer

holidays without regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

"The Challenge increases children’s reading engagement and confidence and it's free to participate, which will help with family budgets feeling the impact of cost-of-living pressures at present.

"There are lots of free activities taking

place at our libraries over the summer which are great for keeping the children occupied and having fun; my advice to parents is to take the children along to your local library and see what is on offer.”

Holiday food vouchers increased to help with cost of living crisis

THE value of vouchers provided to families during school holidays will be restored to £15 per week per pupil, following a 33 per cent cut imposed before Easter.

The decision was taken by the South Gloucestershire Council Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Public Health, Cllr Alison Evans.

The move will cost an additional £292,000, bringing the total allocated to this support to £1 million, with funding coming from the Government’s Household Support Fund (HSF), which has allocated £2.82 million to the council for this year.

The funding is also being used to support households struggling with the rising costs of energy, for example by providing advice on reducing costs. There is also a focus on helping carers and care leavers. This summer, vouchers will also continue to be provided to fund meals for Year 11 school leavers who have previously received free school meals.

Cllr Evans said: “For many families in South Gloucestershire there is truly a cost of living crisis. Many of us can take putting food on the table for our families for granted, but for those who rely on benefits-related free school meals during term time, the additional cost of providing healthy food during the holidays can overstretch a household budget.

“We are committed to doing all we can within the resources we have available to help those families. Some of that support is available in help and advice to reduce costs, but some of it needs to be in financial form, to take real pressure off families. We believe that helping those families in the most need must be our priority, which is why we have reversed the cut that was imposed earlier this year.

Families with children aged 5-16 on benefits-related free school meals can also book free places at South Gloucestershire

holiday activities and food clubs (also referred to as HAF) in the summer and main school holidays, funded by the Department for Education. Visit www.southglos.gov.uk/HAF

Eligible parents can apply for a school uniform reimbursement grant. This provides help towards the cost of essential clothing for school use, such as PE kits, shoes and coats purchased between 1 June and 15 September 2023. It does not cover stationery, bags, lunch boxes, or other non-clothing items.

You can apply if you live in South Gloucestershire, are struggling to pay bills or meet your monthly outgoings and have no other means of support. To apply, you will need to visit your nearest One Stop Shop in Kingswood, Patchway or Yate or call 01454 868009. You will be asked to fill in a financial statement of your income and expenditure for the household and provide receipts showing the purchase of school uniform and proof of the bank statement showing the transactions. Help with essential school clothing costs all year round is also available for eligible households.

Free and fun places in South Gloucestershire for families to visit during the holidays include the council-owned Grimsbury Community Farm in Kingswood. The farm has lots of animals to meet including sheep, goats, rabbits and pigs. It also has a picnic area, café and playground. Parking is free and animal feed can be purchased for £1.

Another free day out is the Willsbridge Mill nature reserve, which is home to many types of wildlife, including badgers and Roe deer. The Mill has a wildlife garden and a fairy wood to explore, as well as a café.

Sowing seeds for a fine future

A LINK with a local garden centre has proved a big success for Cherry Garden Primary School.

Headteacher Tom Hutchings has been taking a group of ten pupils to That Plant Place for an after-school gardening club throughout the summer term.

Each week, the children have learned new facts and skills from the centre’s owner, Dean, and followed up on previous planting projects. As well as growing potatoes, radishes and giant sunflowers - which have now gone home to be cared for over the holidays - crown prince pumpkins and more, the children have learned about tendrils, how to create new plants from strawberry runners and how to use companion plants.

They have tasted foods such as broad beans, redcurrants and red gooseberries straight from the plant.

Mr Hutchings said: “The children have loved learning from an expert in a different environment and seeing how

their plants and projects have grown over the weeks. Several of the children have already started their own growing projects at home as a result of the club.

“Dean is a total natural with the children and they have loved every minute. We have even created herb hanging baskets that have come back to school.

As an added bonus, Dean is a keen golfer and the children have had a go on the putting green in his garden and met Monty the grey parrot who lives with Dean.

“We are always looking for ways in which we can engage with the local community and enhance the curriculum experience for the children. This project has achieved exactly what we wanted - the children have found out new skills and passions and got to know people and businesses on the doorstep.

Dean visited the school’s summer fair and there are plans for more collaborative projects including vegetable planters and a new pond and wildlife area at the school.

PE teacher wins award

A BRISTOL teacher has won Primary Curriculum Leader of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards.

Sally Goodridge from Summerhill Primary Academy in Bristol was honoured for her work integrating PE into the school way of life.

Sally has used her passion for sport to rejuvenate the PE curriculum at Summerhill, where staff PE surveys showed that teachers lacked confidence in delivering the PE curriculum.

After taking over leadership of the subject, she created a bespoke learning package for all staff and used Sport Premium funding to bring expert sports coaches into school to co-teach and mentor teachers in PE.

School librarian takes national title

SALLY Hamerton, from Two Mile Hill Primary School in Kingswood has been named 2023 Primary School Librarian of the Year.

When Sally joined the school at the start of 2020, she inherited a library that was under-used and unloved, but with potential. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Sally made an immediate impact. With access to a well-stocked and carefully curated library, coupled with staff aware of the importance of reading for pleasure, reading attainment has increased dramatically. Sally knows that the benefits of reading for pleasure are far-reaching and long-lasting. She said: "Small changes and projects will have an immediate impact, but long-term changes will only become apparent in ten or twenty years, when our children become adults. My aim is to have confident, self-assured readers, with a sense of selfworth, but also empathy for their

community."

Tom Stack, deputy head of Two Mile Hill Primary said, "Sally’s contribution exemplifies the school’s vision to represent all our children in the books that we read and the curriculum we teach. Two Mile Hill Primary is a better school because of Sally; she has enabled children to develop reading as a habit, a

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Changing the culture of policing

LAST month, Chief Constable Sarah Crew made an announcement regarding institutional racism in Avon and Somerset Police.

This is about vital work to change the culture of policing, following the results of many reviews and reports, including those conducted by Macpherson and Casey, which also looks at wider issues of misogyny, homophobia and general police conduct and standards.

Culture change is not something that happens overnight: it takes a minimum of five to ten years and involves looking at many areas within the service.

This includes improving our vetting and selection processes, retention, and progression of staff, how police complaints are handled and, crucially, the training given to the workforce within the wider police family.

I have let the chief constable know I support her and have full confidence in her leadership.

This is a challenging issue to face. However, through initiating

and continuing these uncomfortable and difficult conversations, the chief constable is demonstrating openness, courage and willingness to be held accountable by the communities that she and our police officers and staff serve.

It’s important to note that institutional racism is not just about policing alone.

Policing is one element of the criminal justice process and, as the chair of the Local Criminal Justice Board, this is about our joint work with the wider criminal justice system (CJS) agencies like the Crown Prosecution Service, courts, prisons and probation to tackle racial disproportionality within our respective organisations.

Such work is already underway, with the recommendations in the Identifying Disproportionality in the Avon and Somerset Criminal Justice System report.

I will continue to update you on this area of work and, as your PCC, support the scrutiny and accountability of the chief constable on these issues, as Avon and Somerset

Police continues towards its vision to deliver outstanding policing for all of our communities.

Moving on, Avon and Somerset Police has joined all five police forces and PCCs in the South West and the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) as part of the region’s ongoing work to target and disrupt organised crime groups harming our communities through drug supply.

Avon and Somerset Police is the top out of all forces for the number of operations focused on drug supply disruptions; all five police services in our region are in the top 10, and have been for the past two years.

In Avon and Somerset, officers have seized over £3 million worth of cannabis and arrested 20 people in relation to crimes linked to the illegal cultivation of the plant.

This operation continues to go from strength to strength. We collectively continue to make our communities safer by targeting the criminals bringing drugs and violence to our region, as well as protecting the vulnerable they seek to exploit, as

hobby, and a life-long passion."

Yvonne Lang from the award’s sponsor Authors Abroad said, “Huge congratulations to Sally. This award is very well deserved in the face of stiff competition. Her enthusiasm for reading and dedication to literacy shone through; the children are very lucky to have such a role model in their lives.”

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford

workers or as users of the drugs they supply.

Taking a regional approach really does make a difference, so much so that the number of county lines in our region is decreasing, as criminals are having to change the way they operate.

The message is clear: the South West is no place for drugs or drug dealers.

Teenagers give back to their community

CABOT Learning Federation

(CLF) Post 16 Year 12 students participated in Community Action Day 2023, where they volunteered with charities across Bristol to give back to their community.

More than 120 students took part in a wide range of activities across the city, which included volunteering projects in charity shops, schools, parks, city farms and other community initiatives.

Community Action Day is a multi-agency event designed to build community relationships, make a positive difference and to enable the students to explore volunteering opportunities to

broaden their career options.

Kate Brisley, career coach at CLF Post 16, which is based at John Cabot Academy in Kingswood, said: “We would like to thank the organisations who agreed to take part in supporting our students to develop their skills in preparation for their future careers.

“It is important for us to link with local charities and organisations within our community to make a difference, and to give our students these valuable volunteering opportunities. It was a great day for the students and staff.”

Lolly good!

KINGSWOOD lollipop lady Joan Crossland has received an award for her 34 years of service.

But Joan, 72, does not plan to stop helping children get safely to and from Beacon Rise primary any time soon.

She said: “I love the job and the best bit is seeing the children –especially when they get dressed up in costumes for special days.

“I often see ex pupils who are now grown up with children at the school. They will often shout out ‘Mrs Crossland, do you remember me?’

I’m still fit and I plan to keep going for a while yet!”

Joan received her special badge as part of South Gloucestershire Council's celebrations to mark 70 years since the start of the school crossing patrol service. The council is looking for more school crossing patrol assistants - email roadsafetyeducation@southglos.gov.uk

OVER 40? Come into Ellacombe Pharmacy for an NHS BP Check to save your life

Ellacombe Pharmacy is on a mission to prevent heart attacks and Strokes. We invite all local residents, even if you are not our regular patients, to come into Bedminster Pharmacy as soon as possible for a free NHS blood pressure check.

This NHS blood pressure check is for those over the age of 40 who have not been previously diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and have not had their blood pressure measured by health professionals within the previous six months.

Takes about 10-15 minutes in the pharmacy consultation room with a trained pharmacy team

member. Following this, you may be invited to take home a blood pressure monitor that measures your blood pressure as you go about your daily life. Depending on your readings, you may be referred to your GP.

We also discuss healthy behaviours and lifestyle choices that help protect your heart.

Why is this new service so important?

Blood pressure is the force of your blood moving against the walls of your arteries. It is expressed as two numbers, one above the other. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a condition where your readings are raised; it needs to be controlled to reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other

cardiovascular disease.

In the UK, there are about five million adults (one in every nine) who have high blood pressure without even knowing it since high blood pressure itself rarely causes symptoms. You can have unknown genetic factors increasing your risk.

One in four premature deaths are caused in South Gloucestershire by Heart disease, and 1.6 million disability-adjusted life-years can be attributed to it. Heart Disease affects seven million people and is the second most common cause of premature death in England, after cancer.

The British Heart Foundation estimates that high blood pressure causes over 50% of heart attacks and strokes.

Together we can save lives and

prevent disability. Make sure your friends and family know about this service and come in to access it. It is free, and all blood pressure readings are sent to the general practice so records can be updated and appropriate action is taken. We know life is busy, and we all face daily pressures, especially as we navigate the high cost of living. Please accept this free offer – call us on 01179322293 or come in to find out more.

FRYS BOWLING CLUB

Bristol and District League: The month started with defeat away at Victoria Park and leaders Redland Green.

In the fourth game in 2 weeks between the two clubs, Fry's welcomed Knowle 'A' and a dramatic finish propelled Fry's up the table. Rink 1 dominated the guests, with rink 2 tight all the way, and Knowle pulling away on rink 3, leaving Fry's lead hovering around the 10 shot mark. With the score looking like a 6-4 to Fry's, the game took a dramatic turn. Knowle went into the final end on rink 2 1 shot up, but Fry's would pack the head, with a good shot from the number 3 removed a Knowle bowl. Fry's took 4 shots and another 2 points. After falling behind 11 shots with 3 ends left on rink 3. Fry's closed the gap to 4 shots going into the last end. A poor end saw Fry's getting 5 bowls closest to the jack to complete a remarkable comeback, giving Fry's 10 points from the 61-36 win.

A battle of the mid table teams saw a tight low scoring with Fry's visit to Henleaze 'A'. After a close start, the game remained tight lead to a close finish with each club taking a rink, the game came down to Fry's 3 behind overall, but tied on the rink. A conservative end saw Fry's pick up a single shot, which gave Frys 4 points from the 37-39

loss, seeing Fry's sit fifth in the table heading into the off week.

22nd June: Fry's 44-50 Victoria Park; Rink 1: 12-19; Rink 2: 21-15; Rink

13th July: Fry's 37-39 Henleaze 'A'; Rink 1: 13-12; Rink 2: 11-20; Rink 3: 13-7; (4-6).

Cups:

Following a disappointing 104-56 loss in the first round of the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey at home to Knowle, the second round of the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy saw Fry’s travel to Knowle.A close game came down to the final end with Fry's needing 5 off the last end to win. Once again this season, the final bowl to make the necessary shots was just wide. With only a single from the end, Knowle would hold on for a 45-42 win.

Clarence Davey: Fry's 56-104 Knowle; Rink 1: 8-31; Rink 2: 16-15; Rink 3: 13-42; Rink 4: 19-16

Lloyd Trophy: Fry's 42-45 Knowle; Rink 1: 9-26; Rink 2: 21-8; Rink 3: 12-11.

The Somerset Bowls Association competitions proved unfruitful for Fry’s with defeats in both the Turnbull Cup and subsequent Wedmore Plate. A wet night at Keynsham went the way of the home side 66-54, seeing off a

potential comeback from the visitors. The Wedmore Plate at Norwest went in similar fashion, with Norwest comfortably winning two rinks and winning a tight 3rd rink to take the overall win 75-60.

Scores:

Whole lotta love for Led Zeppelin album

PICTURE the scene. It’s winter 1972 and you’ve just spent the last hour or so watching one of the biggest bands around perform – Led Zeppelin. The concert is over, you’ve got their new LP under your arm, and as you walk past the stage door you see the band walking to their van. You run over and each member of the band takes their turn in autographing the cover of your record. No security guards, no paparazzi, just a handful of fans hoping to meet the band before they leave. Those were the days!

Well, that’s precisely what happened to one lucky fan back in 1972. A few years later they probably sold or swapped the record for something else and it passed hands a few times. Jump forward to just a few weeks ago and that very record had made its way to our saleroom.

It was Led Zeppelin’s fourth ‘untitled’ LP and featured their most iconic track – Stairway To Heaven. The autographs were signed in blue ballpoint across the front cover, and none of the band had personalised the autographs. For Led Zeppelin fans, it couldn’t really get much better!

Clearly very rare, clearly a unique find and clearly a very special item. I placed a pre-auction estimate of six to eight thousand pounds on it, and the client seemed more than happy with this - having paid only a few hundred pounds for it in the nineties.

Once the online catalogue was published, the LP attracted immediate interest and we had emails and phone calls from collectors based all around the world.

It ended up selling for £15,000. Yes. Fifteen-thousand-pounds! Not a bad price for a thirty second encounter at a stage door back in 1972!

Club shows off new shirts

MEMBERS of Keynsham Bowling Club got the chance to try on their new shirts after collecting them at their July coffee morning.

They are pictured under the flag pole where, above the club flag, flies the flag of Ukraine, which has been there since the invasion took place as a show of solidarity for the people of that country.

League bowling is now well under way and here, as promised in last month’s article, is a results update.

It is always good to start with good news and that has to be our ladies. As well as having won their last nine league matches, they have also been enjoying good cup results.

They are through to the second round of the Southey Cup plus, after a great win in the Fear Cup, they were looking forward to playing Bath as the Voice went to print.

Regrettably, our men have not experienced the same level of success. In the Thursday Bristol and District League, our A team won promotion last year and are now playing in Division 1. The quality of teams in this league is good and we are struggling somewhat, having won just one of 11 fixtures.

The B team also went up a division and is playing in Division 3, where it has won four of 10 fixtures. Our C team is in Division 4, with three wins from 11.

On Saturdays we play in the North Somerset League, and in East 1 our A team is in fifth place, with three wins out of six. Both our B and C teams are in East 2, with our B team having won one out of five, and our C team one out of six.

Our most successful men’s side is the Friday Triples team, winning eight of 13, and they are currently third in a league of 12. We are also in the semi-final of the Triples Cup.

In our cup competitions, we lost at home to Redland Green in the first round of the Lloyds Trophy but beat local rivals Frys in the Turnbull Cup. In the next round, we were drawn away to Purnells and narrowly went down against a strong side.

Since our club was created in 1957, mixed team bowling has always been a feature of our matches. This is reflected in our membership of the Mixed Mid Somerset League, which bowls on a Friday evening.

The club uses this as an opportunity to field new and well-established alongside each other, giving valuable experience to beginners in a competitive league.

At the time of writing, we are looking forward to our captains’ charity barbecue, when we will be entertained by Lizz Lipscombe, strolling among us while playing her electric violin.

Free bus travel offer is up and running

HAVE you applied for your free month of birthday travel?

If yes - fantastic - and thank you!

If not - please head to www. birthdaybus.co.uk. There’s nothing to lose and lots to gain.

So, what is Birthday Buses? In simple terms, I’m proud to offer all West of England residents the chance to ride the buses of our region for free throughout the whole of their birthday month. There’s no limit on the number of journeys you can make, or the time of day. So, what are you waiting for?

Importantly, Birthday Buses helps your pocket during this frightening cost-of-living crisis.

But it is also a serious plan to get our region moving and tackle the climate emergency. I’m very keen to see new people become bus passengers.

The latest figures show that the vast majority of people who used to travel on buses before Covid are

doing so again.

But - and here’s the catch - they are making fewer journeys. If you think about it, it makes sense. People are working from home more; doing more online shopping and there are more virtual appointments for things like speaking to a GP.

So, passenger journey numbers are down and that means less fare income coming in. That’s not sustainable.

Birthday Buses is designed to encourage new people to hop on the bus and try it out - for a regular commute, to go to the shops, or to spend their weekends enjoying the amazing attractions of our region. Because I think if you try buses, you might like them.

Other places in the UK have tried free bus travel for a day, or a weekend, but this is different. A day isn’t enough to make or break a habit. But a month? Hopefully.

We have thought about this carefully. The month of your birthday seemed a great time to give you a free travel gift, but I’ve also worked closely with bus companies.

The phased nature of Birthday Buses means you won’t face overcrowded buses. We also need to make sure it’s definitely you applying, so please have a passportstyle digital photo ready to apply at www.birthdaybus.co.uk.

A staggering 44% of our carbon emissions come from transport, and fewer than one in ten regional commutes are made on public transport.

Worse, there are a shocking 300 preventable premature deaths due to air pollution annually.

Getting people to use the car less and use the bus more is key to reaching our ambitious 2030 netzero target here in the West, and it will reduce traffic and delays that

Metro Mayor Dan Norris and his dog Angel

write for the Voice

cost our local economy £300 million a year.

Finally, I want to put our region on the map. Birthday Buses is doing just that. We’re the envy of England, with Bus Users UK calling it “brilliant”.

So please sign up now at www. birthdaybus.co.uk and tell your friends, family and workmates. And may I wish everyone many happy returns - and singles!

MARTINS TOY SHOP

Martins toy shop was a popular feature of Kingswood High Street for many years. The shop was so popular that in the early 1980’s a second shop was opened on the other side of the High Street.

The huge interest in the Star Wars films in the 1970’s and 1980’s led to the sale of a wide range of themed memorabilia and toys, including Star Wars action figures. Martins toy shop not only stocked and sold these items, but in 1981was visited by one of the main characters in the films, Darth Vader,

Kids go free this summer at Brunel’s ss Great Britain

This year marks 180 years since the SS Great Britain was launched into Bristol harbour – changing global travel forever.

To celebrate, Brunel’s SS Great Britain are welcoming children 16 years and under for free this summer when you book tickets online.

Highlights include an exciting new food trail – ‘Birthday Banquet Blunder’ – where families can follow a series of clues hidden throughout the ship. The trail will teach children about the food that passengers would have eaten on board.

Iona Keen, Head of Interpretation at Brunel’s SS Great Britain said:

“The new ‘Birthday Banquet Blunder’ family trail is a fun way of showcasing the sights, sounds and

smells of a Victorian voyage. And there’s a culinary twist to tie in with our 180th anniversary this summer – families can help solve party preparation blunders, all based on real life events that happened on board the ship.”

Visitors can also step back in time by peering through a pair of augmented reality binoculars that will transport them to 1843. Created by Zubr, a leading augmented reality studio based in the South West, the experience will allow visitors to see the ship and the floating harbour as they were 180 years ago.

Book a visit between 19 July and 3 September to redeem the ‘Kids Go Free This Summer’ offer. Terms & conditions apply. www. ssgreatbritain.org/summer

Pupils' Latin success

CHILDREN at a Downend primary school returned in triumph from a Latin competition.

The Year 4 team from St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School took their version of Echo and Narcissus to Bristol Classical Association's annual Festival of Latin Drama at the end of June.

It was the first time the competition for primary schools had been held since the pandemic. Despite being the youngest team at the event, held at Bristol University’s Victoria Rooms, the St Augustine's team took home the first prize.

Year 4 teacher and language lead Rachael Swonnell said:"I was so proud of them, and was extremely impressed with their first prize. "The competition was of such a high quality. "Well done to everyone from the Latin drama club, who worked so hard to create such an energetic and exciting piece of theatre."

A HOSPITAL in Peasedown St John is set to become a hub for orthopaedics operations in the South West, able to operate on 1,500 joints a year.

Bath’s Royal United Hospital bought private hospital Circle Bath in 2021, renaming it Sulis Hospital. Now Paul Doyle, transformation director of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board’s elective care programme, has told Bath and North East Somerset Council that the facility will

become a hub for elective surgery in the South West.

He told the council’s children, adults, health and wellbeing policy development and scrutiny panel: “It currently does a combination of private treatments but also increasingly an amount of NHS work, and what we have been successful in doing is securing some national funding to extend

that facility and convert it into an elective orthopaedic centre. So part of it will be focused solely on doing orthopaedic work: so hips, knees, shoulders, other joints.”

Two new modular theatres will be built at the hospital, bringing the total number up to six, and allowing the hospital to carry out about 1,500 joint operations a year. One temporary additional theatre is currently running at the site

Mr Doyle said the facility should be operating from June 2024.
