Let your light shine in Hanham this year THE streets of Hanham will be lit up this month in a fantastic display of decorated windows. Hanham Shine Your Light, running from December 18 to 20, is the area’s first attempt to run a Window Wonderland. These walking trails, which have become increasingly popular in other areas of Bristol, ask residents to follow a map to see a range of decorated, lit-up windows in homes, schools and businesses. Hanham’s will run from 6-8pm on each of the three evenings and it is free to take part and to download the map to follow the trail. Organiser Chloe Scholefield, 41, who moved to Hanham during the first lockdown, said: “The idea is to cheer up the otherwise dark and cold evenings in December with fun and light, in the form of decorated windows. “There is no theme so the possibilities are endless. It’s a creative way to connect people and make them feel proud of their community.” Turn to Page 3

Covid cases at all-time high CASES of Covid-19 were at an all-time high in November, with more than 300 per 100,000 people. This means that, although the national lockdown will end on December 2, our area is likely to remain under at least Tier 2 – High – restrictions until infection rates come down New testing centres, including one at Cleve Rugby Club in Mangotsfield, have opened and the council is asking the Government if it can join the next phase of mass testing as soon as possible. Director of Public Health, Sara Blackmore, urged people to continue following the “Hands, Face Space” rules. “Our infection rate is higher than the all-England average and double the rate in the South West region. Hospital cases are rising, with a resulting strain on our local NHS, our adult care services and of course our vulnerable residents and families. It is absolutely vital that everyone follows the guidance,” she said. The latest figures showed 27 positive cases in Hanham , which equates to 292 per 100,000; 27 in Hanham (206); 21 in Longwell Green (209); 33 in Cadbury Heath South and North Common (314); 40 in Cadbury Heath North and Bridgeyate (395); 33 in Kingswood North (423) and 38 in Kingswood South (403).

Schools in the Kingswood, Hanham and Longwell Green Area were hit, with many having to send home whole year groups at primary level and large groups of students at secondary. John Cabot Academy in Kingswood was among those severely affected. Hanham Woods Academy, also part of the Cabot Learning Federation, was less badly hit. Schools in the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust also saw many students having to isolate at home because of confirmed cases involving staff and students. Years 7, 10, 11 and 13 at Wellsway School in Keynsham had children on remote learning as the Voice went to print, while students in Years 8 and 12 at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy were similarly affected. Gary Schlick, director of education, said: “Each time there is a new confirmed case of coronavirus we have detailed discussions with, and follow the advice of, the local health protection team, the Department for Education and Public Health England. This helps us to keep our staff and students safe. The current guidance remains that only those in close contact with confirmed cases need to isolate. “We are grateful for the support from families and the hard work of our staff, who are determined to deliver the best possible education." Time to cheer up December From Page 1 Chloe said having an evening wander to see the windows was a good way for people to get some exercise and explore the local area, while keeping a safe distance from others. A trained community arts coordinator, Chloe can’t wait to take her son, Hector, age three, to see the trail and she’s planning out silhouettes she can make with him for their own window. She already had plenty of ideas from following a similar window trail near her previous home in St George. Chloe, who works as an art technician at Bristol Brunel Academy, said: “I’m new to the community so this will be a great way to find my way around and get to know people. We’ve already got a few businesses, churches and schools interested. I’d love to have thousands of homes take part, although 50 would be a great success. She is hoping the event will become an annual one and, from 2021, run alongside a lantern parade to boost businesses in the High Street and bring together the Hanham community. Chloe said: “Next year we will be setting up community workshops so people can swap skills, ideas and resources for decorating their windows. Hopefully I’ll run them in community centres, sheltered housing and so on.

A wndow display at a similar trail in Bishopston, Bristol “They can also learn how to make a lantern and become part of the lantern parade.” Those who want to put up their own window display can have their address added to an online map of the trail by emailing hanhamwanderland@ gmail.com For those who can’t get out to see the windows, pictures will be posted on the trail’s Facebook page, Hanham Shine Your Light, and on Instagram @hanhamshineyourlight

Snowmen are slimmed down THE popular Kingswood Snowman Hunt will take place in 2020 – with a twist. Kingswood Business Association has decided to run a one-day event on Saturday December 19. Businesses will decorate and name their snowmen and display them in their windows that day. Shoppers have to find and list them on forms to be collected from the event table in the Kings Chase Shopping Centre to claim a prize on the day and join the prize draw. KBA secretary Nick Worlock said “We know Christmas is going to be different this year; but we know families enjoy looking for the snowmen. It’s a freecompetition, and might help shoppers discover businesses they didn’t know existed.”

The Rashford effect - making sure local children do not go hungry RESIDENTS, schools and businesses united over October half term to ensure that local children didn’t go hungry. The action came after Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford MBE’s campaign to continue free school meals during school holidays until next Easter was voted against by a majority of MPs in parliament. Children from families in receipt of certain benefits are entitled to free lunches during school term time. This amounts to more than 1,600 children in the Kingswood, Hanham and Longwell Green area who are normally eligible for free school meals. Earlier this year Rashford ran a successful national campaign and persuaded the government to offer these families food vouchers throughout the school summer holidays but a bid to extend this for the autumn break was ruled out, prompting local action. Since half term, the Government has changed its mind and agreed to fund holiday meals for children in need throughout 2021. South Gloucestershire Council has

A protest outside MP Chris Skidmore's office in Hanham received an additional £570,000 from the Covid Winter Grant scheme and is working out details of how families will be able to claim support during the Christmas break. In October, Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, who voted against the motion, found his Hanham High Street constituency office decorated with empty paper plates in protest. The plates were covered in messages for the Kingswood MP such as, “No child in Bristol should go hungry in Bristol

in 2020. It’s a disgrace,” and, “There is more written on these plates than there is food in some children’s bellies.” Kingswood resident Jess Sharratt, 31, who works at Bristol University, was inspired by similar ‘empty plate’ protests across the country to set up the Hanham event with fellow organiser Kate Reed. Jess said: “An empty plate sends a powerful, clear message and I thought it was important to do something locally. Regardless of which party they voted for, a lot of residents were angry and upset about the decision not to feed children. “I was a bit nervous about the protest as I’ve not organised anything like this before, but people were absolutely lovely. “Around 60 people came down to leave a plate, even though it was pouring with rain, and passing cars were beeping in support. “We also collected for local food banks on the day and people brought tons of donations as well as cash. They completely filled up Kate’s car and the foodbanks were totally overwhelmed by the donations when she dropped them off.

“Marcus Rashford has spearheaded a fantastic national campaign but it’s still important to remind our MPs that the decisions they make affect their own constituents. "If enough local people comment on a specific issue then it’s the MP’s job to listen and respond to that.” Mr Skidmore said: “Local councils know their communities best and where extra resource needs to be targeted to reach the most vulnerable and this is why I have voted to support extra government funding for South Gloucestershire council, instead of expanding national programmes. “Since half term the government has announced a further £570,000 in funding for the council to provide additional support to vulnerable children and families this winter. "At least 80 per cent of the funding is earmarked to support with paying for food and bills and will cover the period to spring 2021. “This is an opportunity to help tackle the root causes of ‘holiday hunger’ and help families to break out of the cycle of poverty.”

Groups and businesses offer packed lunches and free meals LOCAL organisations and businesses sprang into action to ensure that children didn’t go hungry over half term. Juice Community Project in Cadbury Heath offered emergency food parcels to parents as well as packed lunches for children under 13 every day of half term. Founder Janice Suffolk said: “We gave out around 160 children’s packed lunches over half term. This isn’t new to us sadly. We’ve been doing this in school holidays for the past five years. But this October half term we certainly saw different families who hadn’t come to us before. The issue for a lot of parents is that they’re just above the threshold for getting free school meals. They miss out on official help but still need support with food.” Juice has seen increased demand for its foodbank during the November lockdown and needs donations and volunteers. Visit https://www.juicecic.com/coronaviruscovid-19 to find out how you can help.

The Clock Tower Fish Bar in Kingswood offered free children’s meals and food parcels in half term. Owner Ebony Kenington, 21, said more than 100 food parcels were requested and around 40 children’s meals. “Every day I put my two children in the back of the car and spent most of the day delivering food parcels. It was mainly to families, but also to some elderly people and young people who just needed a bit of help. “People were coming into the shop with food donations for the parcels all the time. It was amazing how everyone pulled together." South Gloucestershire Council provided support too using Emergency Assistance

Grant funding. Families eligible for free school meals could apply for a £20 payment card or collect a food parcel from one of a number of schools including Sir Bernard Lovell, Hanham Woods, Kings Oak, and Longwell Green and Beacon Rise primaries. Over 1,600 children in the Kingswood, Hanham and Longwell Green area are normally eligible for free school meals. But not everyone was taken up on their offers to help. Allen Williams, landlord of the Queen’s Head pub on Lower Hanham Road, prepared free, hot meals for children daily throughout half term. He said: “I got the chefs to make 30 children’s meals a day but we didn’t get asked for a single one. I don’t know why there was no take up. I know the head at Hanham Woods and he was telling people who picked up food parcels that they could come here. It was disappointing that no one came, but I’d still do it again in future. If one hungry kid got fed, it would be worth it.”

Jeff's device puts safety first A BUSINESSMAN has launched a hands-free door opener to try to help people stay safe when moving around buildings during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are many situations when you can’t avoid touching things like a door handle with your hand, and it’s easy to forget to immediately wash or sanitise your hands, or you might not have access to those products. In response, businessman and entrepreneur Jeff Cox has come up with a solution.

His door opener is a sturdy attachment designed specifically for use in high-traffic situations and work environments, such as universities and office workplaces Called the AV Arm Pull Handle, the product is so intuitive to use that people readily accept it as part of the door furniture and automatically use their forearm on the pull handle, rather than their hand to open the door. Jeff runs Euro Moulding 3DS Solutions, which is based in New World Business Centre in Warmley and provides specialist services to industries including architecture, automotive, medical and aerospace. He came up with the idea for the AV Arm Pull Handle after implementing careful social distancing and anti-viral measures for his own office business. The new tooling for the arm pull handle, and the product

itself are being manufactured in the UK. He explains: “We went through a thorough testing process and at least six different prototypes, then subjected the arm to over three times the amount of stress that was required to meet minimum standards. In addition, the arm contains a special anti-viral additive which is designed to add a layer of protection.” Jeff also added: “I’m very passionate that we need to support and try to kickstart our own manufacturing industry in the UK at such a difficult time.” “I have invested a considerable amount of time over the past few months in designing and developing and honing the new AV Arm Pull Handle, plus a further significant investment in tooling but I am confident that this product will be very popular amongst universities, offices, and other

Writing shed puts children on right lines A PRIMARY school has been trying to inspire the writers of the future during lockdown by building its own writing shed. Beacon Rise Primary’s writing shed was inspired by Dylan Thomas’s creative spot overlooking the bay in Laugharne in Wales. The school has also replicated the colours and furniture. Teacher Catherine Powell said: “It is situated in the Early Years Foundation Stage playground and is a fantastic learning resource for the children helping to embed a love of reading and writing. The children were very curious as to what would happen inside the gypsy hut as it was being built. They had a surprise visit from the school mascot ‘Beaco’ and have loved working in this space ever since.”

Now there's a story:

Jane Christmas, who has written a book about her many house moves

A BRISTOL-based author has moved house an incredible 32 times during her 66 years and has now published a memoir about the highs and lows of renovating numerous properties. Open House by Jane Christmas is a humorous look at what ‘home’ means, why it’s important to people, and why some people feel the need to keep moving. Statistically, people in Britain move house an average of three times in their lives, compared with seven times in Canada where Jane was born. The huge number of homes that she has racked up began as a child when her mother kept moving to find new projects to do up. Jane has continued that passion in her own adulthood. Much of the book is devoted to Jane and her husband’s renovation of her 32nd home in Easton, which was carried out

while they lived in her 31st house in Longwell Green. Jane, who moved to Britain when she married third husband Colin, has some fond memories of the BS15 postcode she spent eight months calling home. She said: “The house we rented was situated between Marsham Way and Shellards Road so it was great for local amenities. We’re early risers and loved the fact that Costa and Caffè Nero both opened at 7am, plus it was very practical to be able to walk to the retail parks. We had a little newsagent near us and the owners were so sweet. “There are some lovely walks around Longwell Green, especially once you get down to the Avon. Hanham is really cute and I wish we’d looked around there a bit more. I enjoyed discovering all the little paths that lead through to Cadbury Heath.

why Jane moved house 32 times “The best thing for us was that the house had a garage. We stored all our possessions in there, packed in boxes, until our new house was ready to move into.” However, Jane readily admits that suburbia wouldn’t suit her long term. In her book she nicknames Longwell Green “Little Britain” and states: “You would be hard-pressed to find a more unimaginative housing development. The house we are renting is bland to the extreme.” Instead she sought Victorian character in Easton, buying a £305k terraced house in need of complete refurbishment once the previous, drug-dealing owner ended up in prison. She said: “I wanted to be within walking distance of the city centre because I don’t drive in England. “We were also looking for an area that had a bit of edginess as

well as being affordable. House prices in England are much higher than in Canada. Friends couldn’t believe I spent so much yet ended up with such a small house.” Jane and Colin decided on Bristol after their first attempt at buying a marital home together proved a disaster. They moved from Colin’s London flat to Brixham, Devon, but soon found that the large number of both tourists and seagulls didn’t give them much peace. Jane said: “I had been to Bristol once before and liked it. My daughter did a year abroad in 2011 and came to study at the University of Bristol. I visited her, only for a few days, but I loved the history and culture of the city.” Jane has linked her huge number of house moves to a traumatic rape that happened when she was living in Toronto

aged 29. She describes the process of renovating a house – ripping up carpets, knocking down walls – as therapeutic and says that each time she moves, the memory of the assault fades a little more. Jane has now been in her Easton home for three-anda-half years – well over the average time of two years per home that she’s kept up until now. She said: “I’m always looking at the property pages and Rightmove to see what’s out there. But I think the pandemic has calmed me down a bit and made me appreciate what I have and where I am. I’ve got to know the neighbours and feel part of the community. I’ve found time to write a bit more and am working on historical fiction. “Also, my husband really doesn’t like moving. Before we married he’d been living in the

same flat in London for 25 years. “However, I’ve got three grown-up children who all still live in Canada. They’re getting to the age where they might start having children and once they do I’m sure I’ll be wanting a place back in Canada. “I think people need to be brave and embrace the courage you need to move house. You might only end up six blocks away, but you’ll see the sun come into your house at a different angle or see a different set of people on the street. To some people, 32 house moves looks like recklessness. To me, 32 moves looks like life.”

'He's such a little hero' A MUM from Hanham has described life in lockdown with her little boy, who has a rare lifelimiting condition. Four-year-old Azaan Waqas lives with mum Asia and his brother Raihan, nine. He has Joubert syndrome, a neurological disorder that was detected at Asia’s 20-week scan. As a result of his condition, he only sleeps for four hours every night, cannot talk, has difficulties lifting his head and feeds through a tube. He also has a failing kidney, which would require a transplant by the time he is 10. However, doctors have told Asia that the operation would be a lot for him to go through, and so it may not be something that is possible. Asia used to work as a primary school teacher, but had to give up work to care for Azaan full time. She is able to get help from charities, including Jessie May, who look after Azaan for

three hours each month. Asia wants to raise awareness of Azaan’s condition. She told the Voice: “Lockdown this time around is a bit different as Azaan is now going to Warmley Park School, which he is really enjoying as he loves doing the different activities. However during the last lockdown we didn’t step out of the house for months. “Azaan is such a little hero, and looking after him is very full on as he can’t really be left by himself and it also involves a lot of lifting too, which can sometimes be hard physically. Our normal routine involves getting him ready for school, taking him to school, bringing him home, setting him up for a feed and trying to keep him entertained. I have lots of support from my parents and siblings who live locally, and in 2019 we had 11 emergency admissions to hospital, which

meant that Raihan had to stay with my parents. “If Azaan gets cold or slightly dehydrated, it means a hospital admission for him due to his kidney condition and weak immune system. He also has scoliosis, which is another battle for when he gets older as it will affect his organs – it’s all such a lot for my little man to go through. “As a family we don’t do any fundraising, but at the moment we are looking for a new house that would be properly adaptable for him. Our current one has stairs but no lift, so I have had to move Azaan downstairs. We’re managing, but it is difficult to get him around. I do find things difficult, and I’m on auto pilot most of time because Azaan needs so much of my help and I feel guilty that I can’t give Raihan much of my time too. Dig deep for Jessie May IN a year where we’ve all had our fair share of doom and gloom, Kingswoodbased charity Jes-sie May is asking you to help spread joy by supporting its Christmas Appeal. Jessie May provides specialist hospice-at-home care for children and young people who have a terminal or life-limiting condition. This specialist palliative care is free to families, but Jessie May relies on voluntary donations to provide it. It costs over £1,228,037 each year to continue. The charity is currently supporting more than 180 families across the South West. Life for many of them can feel isolating and restrictive at the best of times. But the global pandemic this year has hugely magnified it for all them. Chris Roys, chief executive of Jessie May, said: “During the first national lockdown back in March we had to adapt our services greatly, meaning that we had to prioritise those children and families who needed the most urgent medical treatment. Our specialist nurses would

go into family’s homes covered headto-toe in PPE, which I’m sure you can understand would be quite frightening to a lot of our younger children, and especially babies.” With the nation currently back in the grips of a second lockdown, the service is needed now more than ever for families across the South West, who are facing an even more isolated Christmas than they have ever experienced. Meanwhile, Mr Roys added: “The usual festive fundraising that we would see at this time of year from our community is practically non-existent, and so to be able to continue supporting these families over Christmas, we can’t do it without help.” If you can spare a donation this Christmas, you can help to bring some joy to the homes of oth-ers like the McArthur’s. To donate £5 to the Christmas Appeal Text JESSIEJOY to 70085, or head to www.jessiemay.org. uk/christmas-donation.

The charity-run Christchurch PreSchool in Hanham, which has stayed open in lockdown to keep children safe in a fun learning environment, raised money for the annual BBC Children In Need appeal by wearing clothing that was spotty, yellow or themed. Youngsters at the nurseries run by the Hanham-based Mama Bear's group also got in on the act, with dressing up and crazy hair days, raising more than £1,000.

Merry eco-Christmas!

C

AN you believe that Christmas is just around the corner? It will certainly be a Christmas like no other, not just for us but for every single earthling on this planet. Life has been difficult, devastating and isolating for many, but through all of this we have seen a real growth in acts of kindness, innovative ideas to keep us all fit & entertained and

a huge growth in community spirit. Christmas will be different this year but let’s keep the community spirit alive as we look out for each other and celebrate together albeit distanced and maybe wearing masks. We can also celebrate an eco-friendly Christmas without giving up all our favourite traditions. Here are a few tips. Choose a real tree – as they grow, fir trees clean the air and can then be mulched at the end of the season. Or like my son and his family find a Christmas twig (see picture); the family goes for a walk looking for a suitable fallen branch which they set into a pot and decorate. After Christmas they return it to the spot where they found it. Get eco-friendly gifts – a plant or a tree for the garden, ‘smellies’ that don’t pollute the environment, toys and clothes made from biodegradable materials, membership to a zoo

or museum, tickets for a show or vouchers for a meal out, which may also help the recovery of a local restaurant or theatre. Use zero waste gift wrap – cardboard boxes, reused or new recyclable paper, avoid sticky labels and tape, decorate with sprigs of holly or dried flowers & tie with sisal string. Cut up old greetings cards to make gift tags. Use LED lights – they use up to 75% less energy and are cool to touch making them safer. Send recyclable, biodegradable Christmas cards or ecards.

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

Be mindful about food – Only buy the food you need & avoid waste; be creative with leftovers: Shop locally and where available buy locally grown. Use cleaning products that do not pollute our environment Recycle as much as possible and above all have some fun. I wish you all a VERY MERRY ECO-CHRISTMAS Live every moment: Laugh every day: Love beyond words Please do email me with any questions or eco ideas prwaller29@gmail.com Penny

Get ready to recycle PLOT HOLDERS at Bristol East Allotments Association have volunteered to support St Peter’s Hospice’s first Christmas tree collection service. People can drop off their trees at the association’s base in Nicholas Lane, St George, on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January and the following weekend 9 and 10 January, when the allotment shop starts its annual seed potato sale. Plot holder Ron Heath says: “We would like to invite everyone to dispose of their Christmas trees with us and offer a donation to St Peter’s, particularly as so many fundraising events at the hospice have been cancelled this year.” Fern Jane, secretary of the association added: “We’re delighted to support this event, please do bring your trees to us. Local tree surgeons Smart Trees have offered to shred the trees for use on our allotments so you can be assured they’ll be fully

recycled. When you visit please ask me or one of our volunteers if you could be interested in taking on a plot, we’ll be pleased to help get you growing. It could be quite possible with our seed potato sale starting on the 9th that you’ll be digging fresh new potatoes and many other fresh veg next summer on your own allotment.” Under the Gift Aid scheme anyone who is a taxpayer could have their donation increased by 25% without any cost simply by leaving their contact details when dropping off their tree. For those preferring to have their trees picked up from outside their home, St Peter’s has a dedicated website where you can book a tree collection and make your donation at the same time. To find out more, visit: just-helping.org.uk To find out more about the Christmas tree recycling scheme, call: 07807 254984 or email theallotmentshed@gmail.com

Every child needs Christmas, says charity PEOPLE and businesses are being urged to show the gift of kindness to children in the area. Every Child Needs Christmas (ECNC) aims to get a present out to any youngster who might not otherwise receive one. The campaign collected and distributed 700 gifts when it began six years ago. By last year,

its growing success enabled it to send 12,200 presents out into areas including South Gloucestershire and Keynsham. ECNC is asking for donations of new and sealed, non-edible gifts for ages 0-16 around the £5-£7 mark. It then distributes them to children in areas with a BS postcode, including Hanham. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the only drop-off points are in Weston-superMare. But people can instead use the following Amazon wish list link - https://amzn.to/2MBcjRL – to donate without leaving their homes, and the gift will arrive at the campaign’s HQ. Retailers are being encouraged to set up an Every Child Needs Christmas purchase point in their shop with items that fall into the campaign’s category. ECNC will advertise where the supporting businesses are so that people can pop in and purchase.

Any business wishing to take part must contact the organisers so they can receive a registration code. To do so, find Every Child Needs Christmas on Facebook (see the link below) and send them a message. The campaign works with organisations including charities, places of worship and social care teams, which refer children to ECNC so they can receive a present. It also sends generic gifts to food banks. Campaigner founder Sara Arshad said: “For many in our local area, Christmas isn’t something they look forward to. It’s another occasion that highlights their struggle. . “So we can all get together as a community and make a difference. For many, this will be the only gift that they receive and for these children and families this really will mean so much.” For more information about the campaign, go to https:// www.facebook.com/childsxmas/

Under government guidelines we are able to remain open during this lock down while following infection control and PPE guidelines set out by our governing bodies. This means we are sending a screening questionnaire to all patients to fill out before each appointment, as well as hand washing and a temperature check on arrival. All surfaces are wiped down between each patient, and unfortunately no towels or bedding can be used at this time. Our practitioners are working in masks, gloves and aprons, and we ask patients to wear a mask too where they are able. We know we are by no means alone in this experience. It is, therefore, no surprise that as we reflect on the year, we picked three particular examples that have shone a light into our hearts. Firstly, the generosity and selflessness in our community. The story of Henleaze and Westbury community during those dark spring days will not be about pasta hoarders or loo-roll speculators; their anxious behaviour now excusable. Instead, it is remarkable humanity and kindness. Secondly, People. During the lockdowns, our team have missed seeing the characters that pass through our lives daily. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

S the local MP, I am keen to ensure that residents, businesses and community groups know about all the support available to help them through this winter. A grant scheme worth a total of £23m is open to businesses in our area secure jobs and deal with the effects of Covid-19 restrictions. The Additional Restrictions Grant is a discretionary payment to help businesses adversely impacted by national restrictions. This is in addition to the Government’s Local Restrictions Grant aimed at businesses required to close. The West of England Combined Authority (WECA), led by Mayor Tim Bowles, has been working councils, including South Gloucestershire Council, to create a consistent regional approach to awarding these grants based on economic need. The grant support focuses on helping: • Non-business rate paying businesses that are required

to close (including businesses registered for Council Tax); • Businesses not required to close but have closed due to a significant impact on trading; • Businesses continuing to operate, but with significantly reduced demand due to social distancing rules. As well as supporting local business and jobs, the Government is supporting our wider local community and heritage groups. Before the new national restrictions came in, I enjoyed visiting Kingswood Heritage Museum in Warmley and, more recently, I was delighted to welcome over £11,000 in funding from the government’s £1.57billion Culture Recovery Fund to support Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh. WMCR is a voluntary not-for-profit organising maintaining the Mill for the community since 2014. In addition, local recipients of funding from the government’s Coronavirus Community

Support Fund include Juice Community Project in Cadbury Heath (£9,400) and Kingswood Community Transport (£6,000) - I am so pleased that volunteers’ hard work and efforts have been supported in this way. I firmly believe that investing in our communities and our heritage remains vitally important for how we recover from the pandemic - creating jobs and economic prosperity, driving tourism, supporting our wellbeing and making our local areas better places to live. Finally, I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We don’t know yet what celebrations we will have, but I hope that 2021 will be a better year than 2020. News of a vaccine is extremely promising, and I hope light is now at the end of what has been a dark tunnel. We will bounce back from this, but we will do so faster if we can help support each other as a local community, one I am proud to represent.

Merry Christmas
