Council puts brakes on ring road changes PLANS to spend £30 million on changes to five roundabouts on the Avon Ring Road have been put on ice for at least a year. South Gloucestershire Council says it is postponing a bid for government money for the scheme on the A4174, which includes road-widening, extra lanes and turning three more junctions into 'throughabouts', where onward ring road traffic can pass straight through. The decision to put the scheme on hold was made in early November after 84 per cent of the 880 respondents to a 12-week public consultation disapproved of the idea. It was made just a week after the reopening of Wraxall Road junction as a traffic lightcontrolled throughabout, where through traffic uses three lanes in each direction to drive through the middle of the junction, while vehicles making turns use a roundabout. Residents have branded the £6.9 million revamp as “dangerous” and a “huge waste of money”. An accident waiting to happen ... and it does: Page 5

A member of the

Whitehall honour A CHURCH curate was invited to lay a wreath to commemorate Chinese workers enlisted by the British in World War I. Mark Nam, 40, is assistant curate at United Church in Longwell Green and St Anne’s in Oldland Common. As the first British-born Chinese priest in the Church of England so was invited to commemorate the Chinese Labour Corp workers who provided supplies to British soldiers, removed bodies and cleared unexploded mines. Just before 11am on November 11, Rev Nam laid his wreath at the Cenotaph on Whitehall then bowed, a mark of respect in Chinese culture. He said: “I was there as part of a small group representing Chinese communities. It felt very meaningful to lay the wreath and the bow was also very important to me.

“For many years I felt that Remembrance Day wasn’t really about my culture and no one ever told me that people like me served in the war. Laying that wreath helped me feel connected to it all as a British Chinese person. I have three young children and my hope is that they will grow up knowing the contribution that their ancestors made to the war efforts.” Despite more than 50,000 monuments in Britain honouring people and even animals that served in the wars, none are for the 95,000 Chinese workers who served the British. Of those, around 20,000 lost their lives. He sourced his poppy wreath from Captain George Harrill and wife Dawn, who run the Bitton and Oldland branch of the Royal British Legion. The couple run a poppy stall outside Asda Longwell Green and have raised more than £2,000 this year.

Edward, 101, lays Hanham poppy wreath FORMER Royal Marine Edward Parsons was given the honour of laying a wreath at Hanham’s service of remembrance. Mr Parsons, 101, from Hawthorn Avenue, was helped by granddaughter Elizabeth to lay the wreath at the war memorial by Hanham community centre on Remembrance Sunday. He said: “It was a fantastic event and lots of people came up to talk to me to say they remembered me. “We used to have a Royal British Legion in Hanham that I used to go to but now it’s a sports centre and it feels like it’s fading away as everyone gets older. The nearest one now is in Kingswood and I can’t get there because I can’t drive any more. “I’ll never forget the war and the chaps I knew that lost their lives. I was there from the age of 19 to 25 and there are very few of us that are still alive now. “It was a wonderful turn out at the cenotaph for the service. There were more than 200 people. At first they couldn’t find the wreath I had to lay, but eventually they handed it to me and I used my granddaughter like a walking stick to help me.

“I was last asked to do it four years ago and it’s a great honour.” The service on 14 November was conducted by representatives of local churches, the Kingswood & Hanham Royal British Legion, the Hanham Detachment Army Cadet Force and retired Wing Commander John Ball. A song, We Will Remember Them, was performed by Jessica Lawrence. Reverend Steve Dyson, associate vicar of the parishes of Hanham & Kingswood, said the event had also acknowledged those who had died from Covid. He said: “I was really impressed by the turnout. There were lots of different community organisations represented as well as the local churches. “Everybody was very respectful in honouring the fallen. “We also considered that a lot of people will be experiencing loss after the last 20 months of the Covid situation and it was appropriate to mention that at the service too and a bouquet was laid to remember all those who have lost their lives in the pandemic.”

A fitting tribute

A REMEMBRANCE service in Kingswood was attended by current and previous members of the armed forces as well as numerous residents. The event began with wreaths being laid at the war memorial, followed by a service at Holy Trinity church led by Rev Beverley Charles. It was well attended despite some confusion earlier in the week when it was mistakenly reported that the parade ahead of the service was still going ahead. The decision had already been announced to cancel the parade element of the day. Attendees listened to performances by the church choir as well as readings and prayers. Kingswood ward councillor Andrea Reid attended and said the event was a fitting tribute to the fallen. She said: “It was a relief to see such a good attendance and support in light of the last-minute changes and resulting confusion. We didn’t have the parade, the sunshine from earlier in the morning had vanished, but everyone involved still did our veterans proud.”

'An accident waiting to happen' ... and it does AFTER well over a year of roadworks, the Avon Ring Road’s first throughabout has opened. The Wraxall Road throughabout – a roundabout where some traffic goes through the middle rather than around the side – at Cadbury Heath has cost £6.9 million to install. The previous roundabout, which didn’t have traffic lights, suffered from long queues, especially at rush hours. A council spokesperson said: “It [the throughabout] will help to reduce delays at busy periods by managing the volumes of traffic in a controlled manner. “It will also help to improve air quality in the vicinity of the roundabout and future proof the road network with additional housing and development coming forward in the area. “It is also set to make sustainable modes of travel such as public transport and walking and cycling more attractive options within local communities.” But residents took to social media to complain that the layout is confusing, because unlike normal roundabouts it requires vehicles to move into the left-hand lane in order to turn right. Bus driver Andy Gards got in touch with Hanham & Longwell Green Voice concerned about confusing road markings at the through-about. He said: “As a bus driver for First, I have had to experience the newly-opened Wraxall Road roundabout on my No 42 bus. “Coming down from Cock Road and turning right heading

towards the new roundabout, the markings on the nearside lane don’t correspond with the markings on the Ring Road. “Instead of going straight across the other side it tries to send you down towards Warmley. “It’s the same coming from the other side, which tries to send you towards Kingfield roundabout. “This is an accident waiting to happen and needs to be addressed ASAP.” Within a fortnight of the throughabout opening, an accident had happened, although it is not clear whether the design played any role in the crash. Two cars and a van were involved in an accident, which left the road closed for four hours while ambulances took two people to Southmead hospital and Avon Fire and Rescue cut a man free from the wreckage of his car by removing the roof.

South Gloucestershire Council has now put plans for three more throughabouts on the ring road on hold for at least a year following a public survey. More than eight out of ten respondents said they were against more throughabouts

being built. Cabinet member Steve Reade said: “You have spoken and we have listened. We will not be submitting a funding bid at this time, but we will feed the comments received back into the proposals. “Whilst pleased with the first few days’ operation of the new Wraxall Road throughabout scheme, we recognise it’s quite a big change for the area and people need time to become familiar with it. We will continue to monitor it to inform the wider project. "There remains a strong case both economically and environmentally for junction improvements along the A4174. “It is anticipated that, with no intervention, the congestion along the ring road and on adjacent roads will worsen in the years to come due to planned local growth."

More raw sewage at Conham River Park? A VIDEO of what appears to be untreated sewage floating along the Avon by Conham River Park has gone viral. The disgusting sight was recorded by Hanham resident Abi Unwin, who posted the footage on Twitter. The video has now been retweeted over 7,000 times, liked more than 11,000 times and received nearly 800 comments. Ms Unwin, a personal development life and career coach, was walking her dogs by the river when she noticed the strange river water. She said: “I’ve never seen anything like that before so I videoed it. “I thought that it couldn’t be sewage, but it was lots of bits with bubbles and I don’t think it could have been anything else. When I got further downriver towards the woods it was very smelly. “My kids wanted to play in the river when it was really hot this summer as they’d seen other people doing it. I wouldn’t let them and wondered if I was being over-cautious. But I wouldn’t let my dog swim in there now after what I saw.” Conham River Bathing Water group, formed earlier this year, have been

monitoring the quality of the water as part of a bid to get the stretch of river assigned Designated Bathing Water Status. This would mean signage to update swimmers on current water quality so they can make an informed decision before entering the river. Sewer overflows regularly pump raw sewage into rivers when the drainage system is under pressure following heavy rain, putting swimmers at risk of illness. The nearby overflow at Beechwood Avenue, Hanham, discharged sewage into the river for 164 hours across 78 days last year. The group sampled the water at Conham River Park after Ms Unwin’s video and recorded their worst set of results ever.

Levels of Enterocci were ten times the limit for safe bathing, it was the worst result ever for phosphates and the concentration of E.coli was seven times the limit for safe bathing. In response, Wessex Water said: “This has been investigated by our team and the river was all clear when we attended and there were no issues with the foul sewer network. “We have also confirmed that no storm overflows in the area operated last weekend when the footage was filmed.” The government has just reversed a decision, which MP Chris Skidmore voted for, to not force water companies to reduce discharges from storm overflows. Following public outcry, ministers now plan to make it the duty of the water companies to reduce overflow over the next five years. Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “Local people are rightly proud of our local rivers, so of course they want them to be free from raw sewage. People feel sickened that human effluent is still routinely discharged into our seas and rivers. It not only makes river waters unsafe to swim in for local people, but it also damages the precious river habitats for marine life, birds and mammals.”

Gymnasts jet off for championship FIVE members of Majestic Gymnastics are flying out to Portugal this month to compete in the TeamGym European championship. Gymnasts Paige Phillips, Larissa Royal and Katie Iles plus coaches Stacey Godden and James Langley have all been picked as part of Team GB. They will be cheered on by Majestic owners Candice Fry and Michelle George, as well as members of their families, who are flying out to Guimaraes to support them. The club in Longwell Green has been working hard to raise funds of £1,300 for each athlete to cover the costs of flights, accommodation and kit. This included a Train With a GB Gymnast day organised in half term, as well as events such

as a Christmas shopping evening. Coach Stacey Godden, 30, from Hanham, is heading up the GB mixed team unit. She said: “We will be right there with the gymnasts. The coaches have to stand at the landing area because the gymnasts are coming off the trampette with only one second between each other and have to move out of the way quickly. If something did go wrong, we’d need to be there to act fast. “This feels like the end of a very long process. We were selected in April 2020 to compete in October 2020, but then Covid hit. “We then had to go through reselection to requalify and have been having weekend training camps every month. “It feels a bit of a relief that

MANY Shops in Hanham High Street are sportng colourful window designs in the run-up to Christmas. The festive extravaganza was dreamed up by Nicola Bartlett, of Eclectic gift shop, and the windows have been handpainted by local business Tozer Signs. Some shops will also be adding Christmas trees. Tozer said: “I’m so grateful the Hanham Business & Community Partnership pulled us in to splash some Christmas magic all over the High Street. Three quarters of the street took part and it really seemed to create a sense of flow and community throughout the area. There are so many incredible independents on this row - everything from gift shops to salons to hardware stores, galleries to restaurants. All of the compliments from passersby really made the cold worth it! I’d love to come back next year for another trail.”

Lights trail workshop RESIDENTS keen to take part in this year’s Hanham Shine Your Light event can come to a free community workshop. The Christmas event, now in its second year, is a chance for windows across Hanham to be lit up with fantastic, colourful displays. At the workshop people will learn how to make a silhouette window display so they can become part of the popular trail. The session takes place at Hanham Baptist church hall from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 11 December. There will be demonstrations on how to do a variety of designs, from the simple to the more complicated. Free materials will be provided so people can make their window displays while they’re there, as well as tea and biscuits. Last year nearly 50 homes and businesses took part in the neighbourhood event. This year’s trail will run from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 December

Nativity trail in the park

Crack the code to uncover the Christmas story THE countdown to Christmas will be extra exciting in Hanham this year thanks to a giant community advent calendar. Eagle-eyed youngsters will be able to spot a new advent calendar card attached to lamp post each morning from 1st to 24th December. As well as a picture, each card will also be printed with a QR code which, when scanned with a mobile phone, will reveal a different code word each day, as well as details of who painted the picture. Children who collect all or most of the code words will be able to claim a prize. Residents are encouraged to

share the location of each day’s calendar card on the @ChristChurchHanham Facebook page once they spot it, so that others can find it and collect the code word too. The community advent calendar has been organised by Rev Steve Dyson, Associate Vicar of the parishes of Hanham and Kingswood. He said: “I’ve been amazed at how many schools and preschools have got involved. It’s going to be a great event.” The Nativity-themed artwork for each card has been produced by children attending schools and preschools in Hanham.

The preschools taking part are Christ Church, Baker Street, Hanham Toddlers and Mama Bears. The schools are Hanham Woods, Samuel Whites and Christ Church Hanham. Children can claim their prize at Christ Church on Church Road on Saturday 18 December from 10am to 3pm or at 4pm on Christmas Eve at the church’s Christingle service.

A NATIVITY trail has been arranged around Kingswood Park and Holy Trinity churchyard. Starting at the park entrance, participants will hunt down nine large cards handing around the park and churchyard. Each card depicts part of the nativity story, with artwork by year six children at Beacon Rise primary. Scanning the QR code on the card with a mobile phone will link to a video of Year 6 children at The Park primary reading the corresponding part of the nativity story. It will also reveal a code to collect in order to be awarded a goody bag. The trail runs from 18 to 23 December and ends at Holy Trinity church hall. The church hall will be open from 10am to 4pm each day.

Net Zeroat FrenchayChristmasTreeFarm If COP26 has got you worried about what you can do about the climate crisis, an easy way to start is to visit Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm for your Christmas tree. Net zero means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, namely carbon dioxide and methane. Buying local means you can really reduce your carbon footprint. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is home to 40,000 Christmas trees spread over approximately 18 acres of green belt land next to the M32 motorway. All plants actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and the Christmas trees - which are evergreen – do this all year round. With the heavy motorway traffic nearby, there certainly is no shortage of carbon dioxide for the trees to mop up. “I think all of us are wondering what we can do on a personal level when it comes to climate change,” says Simon Maughan, managing director of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. “A good way to start

Kate and Simon Maughan, owners of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm invite you to buy your tree locally this year this Christmas is to make sure that we buy as much as we can for the festive season from local suppliers, whether it is food for the table, presents for the tree, or the tree itself.” “As for the Christmas tree, it’s

also important to consider what to do with it in the New Year. Burning it probably is the worst thing to do as it releases all that stored carbon directly back into the atmosphere. Many of our customers find a second use for their tree, as a bird

feeder for example, but by far the most common thing to do with it is to recycle it as chipped mulch.” “We accept hundreds of returned trees in January, and they all get put through the shredder. The bits rot down naturally on the ground, keeping the carbon in the ground, and also making homes for insects and food for fungi.” The Christmas tree site has in itself become a bit of a haven for wildlife. Birds nest in the trees, animals shelter under the trees, wild flowers such as orchids have begun to seed themselves in the grass around trees. 2021 saw the addition of a big pond, which is set to attract all sorts of other interesting residents, such as dragonflies. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open every day from 9am to 5pm from Saturday 20th November. Tiny dancer makes big impact A BUDDING ballerina wowed the judges with her performance as Jemima Puddleduck at a local competition. Liliana Yasdi, four, won the Tiny Tots cup and a Classical Solo medal for the four and under age group at Longwell Green and Kingswood Performing Arts Festival. The event attracted entries from pre-schoolers up to teenagers and was the first competition Liliana has entered. She learned the dance in the summer holidays and has been practising while she has been starting school at Longwell Green primary. Liliana has ballet in her blood: mother Eloise Shutler had a career as a professional dancer before becoming a dance teacher 15 years ago. She now teaches ballet,

tap, modern and jazz at FitzGraham Academy of Dance in Chippenham, where Liliana has her ballet classes. During the lockdowns, Liliana had to log in remotely for her ballet lessons, but is back to face-to-face classes now. Ms Shutler said: “Liliana’s always loved dancing. Whenever any piece of music comes on she starts moving around to it. “Ballet is also very disciplined and I think she enjoys the structure of that.” Liliana is now practising for performances at Exeter Dance Festival and West of England Dance Festival, both in February. She will reprise her Jemima Puddleduck dance, as well as performing an additional ballet solo.

KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY Our November Talk was on the Great Western Cotton Factory situated in Barton Hill Garry Atterton of the Barton Hill History Society talked about how the factory employed approx 1000 people including a fair few Children. It was in operation from 1839 until the 1920's. Barges brought the raw cotton from the States and from it was made the Calico Cloth, which was then exported to the far East. Of course without the existence of the Feeder Canal it would never have been built and following on from that the Streets that grew up around it to house its workers would have been non existent . Our December Meeting held on 1st Tuesday will consist of a Members Quiz , Some refreshments provided by the Society and probably a couple of amusing short Films. Season ends on a high £9 to drive into Bristol BMX biker Kaishu Flukes has celebrated the end of the BMX season by winning two events at the South West Championship. As is his tradition ahead of every race, Kaishu, 14, had his final practice on the Longwell Green BMX Pump track the night before the event. The good luck charm of the pump track did the trick, because the next day Kaishu came first in both categories he competed in. He won the Male 14 and the Cruiser 13-14 categories, competing on two different bikes at BMX Bristol in Patchway. These wins are in addition to him winning the 2021 Cruiser BMX British title for his age group at the British Championship this summer. His brother Senshu, 10, is also a keen cyclist and practises at the Longwell Green track. Both train with Bristol BMX and Bath BMX. Kaishu, who attends Wellsway school, has been racing since he was eight. His parents have recently had to move house from Hanham to in order to get a bigger garage to house all the family’s bikes. The next big event for the boys will be the world championships in France in summer 2022.

OWNERS of older cars, vans and taxis will be charged to drive into the centre of Bristol from next summer, the city council has confirmed. The city's Clean Air Zone has received the backing of the Government and will see cars with petrol engines made before 2006 and diesel engines made before the end of 2016 pay £9 a day to enter an area including Broadmead, Cabot Circus, the Centre, Temple Quay and Spike Island. Larger "older and more polluting" vehicles such as lorries and buses will be charged £100 a day to drive in an area which includes Bond Street, Temple Way, Marlborough Street, Hotwell Road, Brunel Way, Coronation Road, York Road and Bath Road below the Three Lamps junction. The council estimates that about three in every 10 vehicles in Bristol will attract the charges, which would not be paid by owners of vehicles with Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol engines or with Euro 6 diesel engines. The authority says it will help people switch to greener modes of transport using £42m of government funding to pay for initiatives, such as electric bike loans, free bus tickets and upgrades to cleaner vehicles. Exemptions will also be available to some drivers, including people on incomes of £27,000 or below who have to travel into the zone for work, patients and visitors to hospitals in the zone, and people with a disabled or disabled passenger tax class vehicle. It is four years since the government ordered the city council to reduce the city’s toxic NO2 levels to within legal limits as quickly as possible. The CAZ is expected to bring those pollutants down to legal levels in 2023. An earlier plan to ban all diesel cars from the city centre was rejected by the Government. By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Creating a quiet community garden 'My dream A COMMUNITY garden will provide a haven for wildlife as well as quiet spot for people to sit and think. Rev Chris Evans from Church of Ascension in Hollyguest Road cam up with the idea during the first lockdown. She said: “There wasn’t anywhere in the local area where people could go and just sit and be quiet. “There is part of a field behind the church that was covered in brambles so I advertised locally to see if anyone would be interested in helping turn it into a community garden.” A team of nine volunteers has begun work clearing some of the brambles to form a wooded area. There are plans to hang bird feeders, plant bluebells and other woodland flowers, as well as put up bird boxes made by the Cub pack attached to the church. Next spring, it’s hoped that an additional area can be cleared to

create a seating area with raised beds to attract butterflies and bees. Rev Evans said: “It’s been amazing getting to know everyone. Hardly anyone knew anyone before they started work on the project and it’s lovely to create something for the

community. “We’re keeping some of the brambles in place for wildlife and would love to get schools on board with the project and some more volunteers.” Anyone wanting to help can contact Rev Evans on 0117 9577031.

Official opening for new care home A LONG-AWAITED care home in Cadbury Heath has celebrated its official opening. Built on the site of the former councilowned Newton House care home, the Little Heath Care Home and Reablement Centre and the Waverley Gardens Extra Care Housing, both run by Brunelcare, were opened by South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage. He was joined by Cllr Sam Bromiley, who represents the Parkwall and Warmley Ward in which the care home is based. After cutting the ribbon, Cllr Savage took a tour to meet employees and residents at the development, which was delayed in completion by the pandemic. He found out more about the 24/7 nursing care and other services that the 64-bed home and 24-bed reablement centre offer, with all the facilities purpose-built to provide the highest levels. He said: “It is fantastic to see the former Newton House site continuing to serve the care and support needs of the local community and I want to congratulate Brunelcare for driving forward the development in the face of the challenges posed by Covid-19, which has made these types of facilities even more essential than ever. I was really impressed with the state-

Lewis Farrell, reablement manager, Cllr Sam Bromiley, Oona Goldsworthy, CEO of Brunelcare, Cllr Toby Savage and son Laurie, and Madeline Muston, care and support manager of-the-art care facilities that Brunelcare have created, providing an enriched purpose-built environment and a skilled workforce.” Oona Goldsworthy, Brunelcare CEO, said: “It was our pleasure to welcome Cllr Savage

to officially cut the ribbon. We all enjoyed being able to be together after so long and truly appreciate the council's support in the development of Little Heath. We look forward to continuing to work closely over the coming years.”

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI Our talk in October was from Hugh Evans and Mike Burt, former employees at the Cadbury factory in Somerdale, who told us all about the history of chocolate and Fry’s chocolate in Bristol. They started with a potted history of chocolate making starting with the Mayan Indians in the Yucatan peninsula who greatly prized chocolate and used it for ceremonial occasions. The Azteks then took over the Mayan culture and their use of chocolate, they in turn were conquered by the Spanish who brought cocoa beans back to Europe and it eventually found it’s way to London. In 1728 Walter Churchman began to produce chocolate, which was still a drink, in Castle Park, Joseph Fry bought his patent and in 1846 produced the world’s first chocolate bar. Eventually production moved out of the centre of Bristol to a new premises in Keynsham which was named Somerdale. We were treated to samples of different chocolate and the talk ended by reminiscing about some chocolate bars which are no longer in production. Altogether a most enjoyable talk. At our AGM in November Andy Stowe was due to be talking about Antiques and in December we will be having a Christmas party with entertainment from Karen Kennedy. Our trip to Blenheim Palace to see the Christmas market and light show which has a Nutcracker theme was taking place on November 24. Most of our sub-groups are now meeting again. Our members can participate in three Book Clubs, Craft Club, Walking Group, Knitting group, Drama Group, Skittles Group and regular Social Suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30 at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. DO you look after someone? Or perhaps you know someone who does? Families, friends and neighbours often provide crucial care for someone who couldn’t manage without their help. You could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Carers Support Centre runs a monthly carers group in Hanham for carers to get a break and connect with others in similar situations. For many local carers, this is a welcome opportunity to come to a friendly social gettogether and get some support at the same time. Local carer, Tony, who cares for his wife, says: "Going to carers support groups is brilliant. You don’t have to explain your caring situation because people understand. We can laugh together. We can cry together. We can scream together. And

what is said in the room stays in the room. When you first become a carer, you don’t know what you don’t know. You learn a lot at these groups." Carers support officer Luke Knee says: "Our groups give carers a comfortable space to talk and learn from each other’s experiences. Lots of useful information is shared at the groups and sometimes speakers are invited to bring their expertise. All our groups are actively welcoming new members. We would love to hear from you, if you are thinking of coming along.’ All adult carers looking after another adult are welcome at carers groups. Carers Support Centre also offers an online group for all Bristol and South Gloucestershire carers . For more, visit www. carerssupportcentre.org.uk or call CarersLine: 0117 965 2200

Lake shut for revamp A £400,000 restoration of the Victorian lake in St George Park is under way. Bristol City Council says the work, which is expected to take six months, will benefit residents, vistoris and wildlife. The project will • repair footpaths around the lake • replace and strengthen the lake’s walls • add a new boardwalk so that children can watch wildlife and take samples from the lake to learn about nature and conservation • create a natural amphitheatre on the side of the lake for outdoor performances Silt from the lake will be used to make new wetland areas for wildfowl, amphibious creatures, such as frogs and newts and insects. The area around the lake will be closed until the work is completed.

Frustration at £90 Lidl car park charge A PENSIONER is calling for a supermarket to rethink its car park policy after being hit with a £90 charge after visiting one of its branches. Ray Isaac, of Mangotsfield, is a regular customer of Lidl's stores in Emersons Green, Kingswood, Fishponds and elsewhere, most of which have a simple 90-minute limit on customer parking. But he was shocked to be sent a demand for money when he parked at the budget supermarket's Yate branch, after taking his wife for treatment at the town's Minor Injury Unit. Ray decided to stop off at the branch before going home and was there for just under an hour buying shopping. What Ray did not spot is that the customers there have to scan their receipt and enter their registration number on a keypad before leaving. The rule is listed on the signs in the shop's car park but is not made very prominent and Ray assumed the same rules applied as at other Lidl stores with their own car parks. Six days after his visit in late October he received a letter demanding he pay £90 within 28 days, with a 50% discount if paid

Ray Isaac with the letter demanding £90 within two weeks. Ray is taking legal advice about the charge. He said: "I shop a lot at Lidl and all the stores with their own car parks are the same. I've never seen another one like this and didn't check the sign. "I'm 83, I was worried about my wife and a bit stressed, and wanted to get the shopping done and get home. "Because you have to scan a receipt it also means people can't visit the store to browse unless they buy something. "I think they should have a simple time limit like other branches." Ray also expressed frustration that when

he phoned enforcement company ParkingEye and selected the option to speak to a customer service assistant, he was connected to a line with an unobtainable tone. Lidl introduced the charges at the car park off Kennedy Way to stop people using other shops nearby parking there without going in to its store. The company told the Voice it had no plans to change the system in force in Yate and says there is a ten-minute "grace period" for people who do not buy anything to visit without "validating" a receipt. A Lidl spokesperson said: "Our car park management systems are in place to help ensure availability of parking spaces for our customers, and it’s therefore disappointing when we learn that a genuine customer has received a fine. "In the extremely unfortunate event that a customer believes they have wrongfully received a parking charge, we would encourage them to get in touch with ParkingEye directly via the appeals process and explain their situation. "Charges can be investigated and if necessary, cancelled, as swiftly as possible."

Council announces five new nature reserves TWO local wildlife havens are to be officially designated as nature reserves under a South Gloucestershire Council initiative. Magpie Bottom and Cock Road Ridge are two of five sites chosen as part of the green infrastructure strategy, which aims to protect and enhance the natural environment. Restoring hedgerows, improving habitats for pollinators and changing the

way the council manages road verges and grassland areas to support nature are also set out in the 208-page document. Cabinet member for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure Cllr Steve Reade told councillors: “This strategy and action plan explains the important work under way to inform our local plan so that green infrastructure is at the start and centre of our work to get the best outcomes

for people and nature as we plan and design new places.” Responding to concerns that it lacked measurable targets and was too broad, he said cabinet members had the power to amend the plan to “keep it live”. Cabinet member for communities Rachael Hunt told the meeting at Kingswood civic centre that work in partnership with communities, town and parish councils and others was essential to achieving the

strategy’s goals, which would be reviewed every year. “Important foundations have been put in place and there remains significant work to do,” she said. The plan also includes a new green investment scheme for businesses and an online green spaces map with information about facilities, accessibility and “friends” groups. Badgers' digging closes the cycle path A SECTION of the busy Bristol and Bath Railway Path will be closed for up to eight weeks to repair damage caused by badgers. South Gloucestershire Council's Streetcare department said a section of the path almost a mile long – from the Charnhill Drive entrance between Staple Hill and Mangotsfield to the entrance near the former Staple Hill station, between Acacia Road and Thicket Avenue – would be closed to cyclists and pedestrians from mid-November onwards. The initial legal notice said the path would close for up to 21 days from November 15, but signs erected at the closure sites and later Facebook posts said the closure would be for eight weeks. The affected section includes the Staple Hill tunnel. The council said: "On this stretch we have a badgers’ sett, and badgers digging the soil over the retaining wall has caused the

A sign near the old Staple Hill station platform notifies people of the closure main drainage ditch to become blocked. "We will therefore install a pipe in the ditch to stop the soil from the badgers affecting the drainage in the future, as well as carry out ditch clearance and widening works to help hold extra rainfall in prolonged spells of very wet weather."

The council has published a map advising cyclists to take a mile-and-a-half long diversion using Signal Road, Gloucester Road, Morley Road, Soundwell Road, Portland Street, Acacia Road, Marshfield Road and Thicket Avenue. The council says the recommended route "avoids unlit or darker wooded areas so people

feel as safe as possible now the clocks have changed". However some path users are likely to favour a more direct route via Teewell Hill, Broad Street ad Thicket Road. The council will carry out the work with government funding via the Sustrans Paths for Everyone programme. A section of the path between Staple Hill and Siston, including the old Mangotsfield station, has recently been resurfaced using a new recycled material. The trial project used shredded car tyres, with all metal parts removed, to create a rubber-based surfacing material. The council said: "This process means we were able to recycle approximately 370 endof-life redundant car tyres. "Forty million waste tyres are generated each year, and this greener surfacing method means less tyres are exported (around one in four go to Asia), ending up in landfill."

Bridging Histories is inviting people across the Bristol region to join in activities and share what they make. They are asking families, schools and workplaces to get involved in exploring what makes Bristol tick. Groups across Bristol have already been getting stuck in. Barton Hill History Group is creating new heritage trails. At Hoo Haw Children’s Art Festival, Scrapstore and Bristol Beacon created a Bristol skyline and got kids filling it with their own monuments. People have shared poems and their history. Dr Joanna Burch-Brown, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Bristol is part of the team behind the Bridging Histories project. They are looking to get as many people as possible involved. She said: “We especially love seeing activities that bring people together across the generations. It helps us be connected and gain a perspective we could never get on our own.” “We are coming through the pandemic having grown and changed, and we are learning so much more about each other as a city.” “Over the summer nearly 14,000 people shared their views on the future of the Colston statue and plinth.” “This is a great moment for us to come together across the city and region, to connect over food, dip into our history, and get inspired to make positive change for the future.”

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Thanks to all who will be working in festive season IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go! My office has turned into a winter wonderland full of drawings of reindeer, holly and elves from talented local children entering my Christmas card competition. There is a definite chill in the air. In our local shopping streets beautiful store window displays tempt us in, while carols bring muchneeded cheer. And I keep thinking, as I do every single year, I really must get a move on with my Christmas shopping! Christmas is a truly magical time for many. As a child I remember being so excited to find out what Father Christmas had left for me and my brother and sisters. My best ever present was when I was nearly four and got a red ride-on Tri-ang Puff Puff train. I had seen it in a shop window and instantly fell in love. But I also knew it was too big an ask, as it was far too expensive, and I was told that it wouldn’t become mine. So when it was there under the tree on Christmas day it was the most exciting day of my life and it still is! When I was a bit older it remained trains

for me! Christmas was a waiting game to see what extra bits I might get for my Hornby train set. I loved the Brunswick green Great Western Railway engines and their chocolate and cream coaches. Sometimes I’d get some track and points in my stocking or tiny model passengers for the station and trackside. As you can tell, I was super keen on great public transport systems even back then! Nowadays it’s my working cocker spaniel Angel that makes my Christmas special. She loves long walks, her toy pheasant, and best of all, sausages! Boxing Day is obviously a big deal too – I often go to Ashton Gate with my fellow Bristol City fans, and winning hopefully means vital bragging rights over my Rovers mates! For some, Christmas doesn’t mean time off and I’d like to thank our amazing NHS staff, our firefighters and police, those working in retail at their busiest time of the year, and our posties who sort and deliver all the mail. A sincere thank you goes to everyone who works over Christmas! A special Christmas wish also goes to those

writes for the Voice who are spending the holiday alone – perhaps because of fate or circumstance, or maybe because they have lost a cherished partner. If this is you, you will be particularly in my thoughts. It’s also a time for New Year’s resolutions, but as I’ve got the best job ever, mine is simple. In 2022 I want to really put the brilliant West of England even more firmly on the national and global map and ensure our region thrives. So from Angel and me, we wish you and your family the happiest of Christmases, and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year. See you in 2022.

Go with your gut instinct A QUESTION we auctioneers get asked all the time is ‘how do you really know what something is worth?’ My stock answer is always ‘seventy-five percent experience, and twenty-five percent gut instinct.’ That gut instinct is a strange feeling – if anyone remembers the BBC programme Lovejoy you’ll remember he called it ‘having the divvy,’ from the word divine (aka the divine power to spot something good) Every now and then, that gut instinct kicks in. Its an unexplainable phenomenon in the auctioneering world! A client had decided to sell some items with us, one of which was a 19th century peg doll. These are dolls – usually Dutch in origin – made crudely from wood, with small wooden ‘pegs’ in their arms and legs to aid movement (hence their name). They’re fairly sought after, but not all that rare to see - we sell an average of five or six a year. But there was something special about this doll, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The average price for a 19th century peg doll is around the fifty to one hundred pounds mark. But this one was much bigger than usual, and slightly better made than I’ve previously seen. After some research online it appeared to be worth not much more than usual. But I couldn’t let it go – there was something special about it. We placed it in auction with a much higher-than-usual estimate of four hundred to six hundred pounds. In the two weeks leading up to the sale when the catalogue was online, we had no interest - no calls, no emails, no advance bids and it was looking like my gut had lead me in the wrong direction. Sale day comes, and the lot goes under the hammer. It takes a bid at its low estimate – four hundred pounds – a nice result, and its pleasing to see. But then it starts getting more bids. A few moments later its rising towards a thousand pounds. Then two thousand pounds. Eventually, it sold to an online bidder for three thousand pounds! The old adage is true – always trust your gut! Have a wonderful Christmas & a Happy New Year

The best gift you could give someone this Christmas is your time. For most of us, the festive season is a happy time. But there are children in South Gloucestershire who face a Christmas without food, warmth, or love. If you are aged over 21, have a spare bedroom, and space in your heart then fostering could be for you. Become a foster carer with your local authority and we will support you every step of the way. Do something magical this Christmas.

Christmas Jokes Cards These little Christmas joke cards are designed to be tucked into home-made Christmas crackers but you can use them in all sorts of ways. Pop them into a lunch box, perhaps? Make a treasure hunt and see who can collect the most. Punch a hole in one corner and use them as an original gift tag? Or just hand them out in the classroom for some reading practice with a giggle!

Children and staff at Christchurch Preschool in Hanham were spot on when they decided to raise money for Children in Need. They all wore something spotty in return for donations on entry. n PHARMACY BLOG

Human connections are so vital - thanks to everyone supporting our communities

A

S we draw towards the end of the year, it presents an opportunity for reflection.

A year ago, the Covid vaccination programme began. Most of us will now have already had our first and second vaccine doses, with the majority of those due to a booster dose booked up at the Longwell Green Memorial Hall. Being able to help deliver the programme locally with our Bristol Travel and Vaccination Clinic partners has afforded us the most expansive insights into our community. Time and again, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are. Many

may not realise that the effort of delivering the Vaccination Clinics hinges on the work of an army of volunteers. The venue itself is a testament to community partnerships; Neal Saunders, the Memorial Hall Trustees and team have accommodated the disruptions that over 40,000 people getting their jab ensues. When we reflect on all the people we meet, many anxious, some very scared, it is easy to see why human connections are so critical even in our more digitally fashioned and technologically enabled age. We need each other. Not just to do things with but to share our everyday existence. What and how we share life will likely

become the common talking points into the New Year and beyond. Our planet is dying. Poisoned by our choices and habits. Even as we look to save ourselves, we are reminded that we do so most urgently for those most vulnerable, who are thousands of miles away and largely invisible to us. Whether it is fighting the coronavirus pandemic or saving the earth, we all need each other, but it starts with me. Building a healthy community takes a lot of effort, but we can all play a small part in making it easier and more enjoyable. If we fail, hope fades, and something precious dies. Please take some time over the next few weeks to

December, 2021

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

We will help world achieve climate goals IT was an enormous honour to be able to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP 26, in Glasgow over recent weeks – it turned out to be a hugely successful and momentous event. Not only did the summit succeed in keeping alive the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but it also united the world in calling time on coal – the burning of which is the single biggest cause of carbon emissions. This is something that no UN climate conference has ever done before and – whilst a fantastic achievement on its own – isn’t the only COP triumph to report back. The companies that build a quarter of the world’s cars have agreed to stop building carbon emission vehicles by 2035 – and

it is our very own Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems under construction at the Science Park that will provide the global expertise to make this ambitious goal a reality. And 130 countries came together to protect up to 90 per cent of the world’s forests that do so much to absorb carbon and allow wildlife to flourish. Again, locally, we see our own efforts to complement this global action, whether that’s doubling tree canopy cover across South Gloucestershire or pioneering a “WildBelt” network of green spaces, commons, nature reserves stretching from Lyde Green to Willsbridge that will help halt urban sprawl. As the UK’s local and national examples show, the task of our negotiators was made easier by

the fact that the UK wasn’t asking anyone to do anything we’re not doing ourselves. We’ve slashed our use of coal so much that in 2024 our last two coal-fired power stations will go offline forever. We’ve more than doubled our climate finance, providing vital support for developing countries around the world. We’ve made a legally binding commitment to reach net zero, the first of the major economies to do so – and something I was proud to sign into law as a minister. And we’ve set a date by which hydrocarbon internal combustion engines will be banned, whilst continuing the roll-out of electric vehicle charging stations across our area. Finally we’ve shown the world that it’s possible to grow your economy while cutting

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice carbon – creating markets for clean technology and delivering new green jobs that reduce emissions and increase prosperity.
