Bin collections change at risk

‘Swathes’ of countryside at risk ‘VAST swathes’ of countryside will disappear under housing in a blueprint for 20,000 new homes, opposition councillors say. Conservative group leader Sam Bromiley (Parkway and Warmley) told a South Gloucestershire Council meeting that the green belt east of the Avon Ring Road would be “lost pretty much entirely” and that the village of Shortwood could

end up merging with Siston and Warmley under a new blueprint. The council’s new 15-year Local Plan will be put out to public consultation from December 4. A draft document outlining the plan suggests 1,280 new homes could be built around Shortwood between 2025 and 2040, with a further 1,500 added after that, as well as

industrial, distribution and other employment development. The authority’s Lib Dem/ Labour administration defended allocating open fields for housing and insisted the impact on communities and land that currently had protected status was “unavoidable”. Kingswood mother of four Alison Bowen

Tributes paid after death of mum, 41

THE family of a woman who sadly died in Kingswood on Monday November 20 have released a tribute. Alison Bowen, aged 41, died in an incident in Wedmore Close. Darryl Bowen, 43, has been charged with her murder and has been remanded into custody ahead of future court appearances. Her family, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers, have released this tribute: “Alison was a devoted and caring daughter, sister, wife, and mother to four very much loved children. They are appreciated by all who know them. “For several years she headed up a small independent Christian school, and then a home educators’ hub for local families. She helped them bring up, and educate their children themselves in a way similar to the values she held so dearly. “Alison always radiated a very loving, encouraging, and positive nature not only to everyone who knew her, but also to all who crossed her path. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, and always went out of her way to help everyone who needed her. “To quote a friend who is now working abroad, ‘she was always honouring to other people’. “She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and those who worked alongside her, and also by the wider community that she touched so deeply.” Alison’s sister has also issued this tribute: “Alison was a wonderful sister, a loving and dedicated mother. “We cannot even describe our loss, that she has been stolen from us like this.” A fundraising appeal for her family has raised more than £11,000 as the Voice went to print.

Council looks at new options for Regent Street NEW options are being considered for the regeneration of Kingswood town centre following the discovery that there are major problems with banning traffic. Sixty-nine per cent of respondents to South Gloucestershire Council’s consultations so far were in favour of pedestrianisation of the main shopping street. But the authority has found that this is difficult to deliver because of technical issues with potential diversion routes. It has now launched a new consultation to find out people’s priorities for the high street. Among the ideas suggested are banning heavy lorries from Regent Street, shutting the street occasionally for markets, creating outdoor cafes, improving parking for disabled people and revamping shop fronts. Details of the latest moves in the Kingswood Masterplan can be found at https://kingswoodtowncentreimprovements. commonplace.is/news An information session was being held at as the Voice went to print and the council told us it would hold talk to people in Kingswood

about the proposals and gather feedback at community events and groups including the Kingswood Community Engagement Forum, Help at the Hub and Kingsmeadow@ Madeforever. A council spokesman said: "We considered the potential for pedestrianisation in Kingswood and publicly consulted on proposals in May 2020. Following feedback, we investigated the options further and in 2021 shared two potential diversions routes for traffic; a southern route, and a northern route. "Since then, we have further explored the two options by assessing road and junction capacity and by monitoring local traffic volume and air quality. We have also carried-out modelling exercises to explore where traffic might go based on both diversion routes. "This showed that the southern route isn’t a feasible option due the space available to build the necessary infrastructure. The northern route also creates challenges, and we have shared these with the public to seek their views and put forward alternative options for consideration."

Hopes for shop THE large vacant unit in King's Chase shopping centre could soon be filled. South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the centre, has told the Voice: "We are in discussions with several potential occupiers and are hopeful it will be occupied in the New Year. "

Green belt under threat in blueprint for CONSULTATION wIll begin this month on plans for thousands more houses to be built in South Gloucestershire over the next 15 years. The council has put forward a blueprint that includes development of the “East Bristol fringe”, including huge estates in Shortwood and Warmley. The proposals in the draft South Gloucestershire Local Plan have already led to accusations that “vast swathes” of the green belt will be lost. The council says 20,490 homes are needed in the district by 2040, of which 11,230 already have planning permission, leaving the authority to find land for the remaining 9,260. Under the draft Local Plan, which will go out to nine weeks’ public consultation on December 4 before being submitted to a government planning inspector for public examination, only

1,540 new homes will be built on “brownfield” sites. About 7,500 are for “greenfield” locations, with the bulk of these – 5,740 – earmarked for the East Fringe, where the authority also aims to create more employment spaces. Development is proposed at three sites in Hanham: Land at Castle Farm Road, 125 homes; Land south of Abbots Road, 85 homes; Land at Castle Farm Inn, 60 homes, Other potential development sites include Jarretts Garden Centre in Bitton, 95 homes; and The Sawmills, Bridgeyate, 110. The Lib-Lab coalition, which took control of the council in May, said building on open fields was unavoidable. Conservative group leader Councillor Sam Bromiley (Parkwall & Warmley) told a full council meeting on Monday, November 13: “The draft Local

Plan proposes thousands of new homes on greenfield land – a lot of this looks like it will be situated in the greenbelt. “The Conservative group has always said we would work to protect the greenbelt. “Our residents who live in the East Fringe are right to be concerned that their greenbelt is going to be lost pretty much entirely.” Maps of the exact sites earmarked for possible development were not available when the draft Local Plan went to the council for approval. They are expected to be issued on December 6. The draft Local Plan includes 1,000 homes at two unspecified locations in “Warmley North”, another 1,150 at three sites in “Shortwood South”, plus a further 2,500 here beyond the year 2040, and 280 at one in “Shortwood North” – all of which

it says are within existing urban boundaries. In a “schedule of sites” list it includes 950 homes at Lower Shortwood, Pucklechurch & Siston, plus a further 1,550 here beyond 2040, 970 at land north of A420 and south of Goose Green in Siston, 280 on “land at Shortwood, Pucklechurch”, 65 on “land at Shortwood, Emersons Green”, 50 homes on “land south of Shortwood Hill, Mangotsfield” and 30 homes at 15 and 17a London Road, Warmley. It is not clear whether any or all of these on the two lists overlap. Warmley resident and former Tory cabinet member with responsibility for transport and planning Steve Reade told the meeting that the plan showed the Lib Dem/Labour coalition had already made up its mind that there would be some loss of the greenbelt.

Waste Less, Recycle More… tell us what you think Recycling is environmentally and financially the best option for your household waste and for the planet. South Gloucestershire Council is proposing some changes to waste and recycling services over the next few years to:  Help you recycle more;  Reduce the carbon footprint of waste in South Gloucestershire, and  Reduce our costs, so that our funding covers the cost of delivering the service.

First, we want to introduce weekly household collections of flexible plastics and improve recycling information so it’s easier to understand what you should be recycling from home. Once everyone can recycle more from home, we then want to look at how often black bins are collected. These changes together will cut carbon emissions from our waste by between 3,000 and 4,000 CO2e a year – that’s equivalent to taking 668 to 890 petrol driven cars off the road a year.

housing and jobs He said: “I would have thought, as would many in my part of the region, that your starting point would be ‘no greenbelt loss’ rather than ‘how we can justify losing it’. Lib Dem cabinet member in charge of planning Cllr Chris Willmore said: “We have taken every single brownfield site that the previous administration had identified and allocated them. “But we’ve gone further and we’ve been hunting for more. “It’s easy to make a promise that you’re not going to touch the greenbelt until you do the sums and you discover they simply don’t add up. “There is no magic land tree, we are not Hong Kong, we don’t invent new land, we have a limited supply of land, and when you’ve taken off the table all the bits of land that can’t be developed for various reasons, you are left with saying

reluctantly the only places it can go are in the greenbelt.” She said the government’s calculation was that the council needed to provide land for 20,500 homes by 2040. “Wherever they go, things are going to look mighty different,” Cllr Willmore said. “Inevitably some local areas and fields will in future have affordable houses, spaces for employment, schools, surgeries, play areas and all the other local services on them. Inevitably that is going to affect existing communities and biodiversity, wherever the homes go. No one is underestimating the impact of new developments on our communities. The difficulty is that the large proportion of South Gloucestershire is greenbelt, so wherever we put the housing development it’s going to have an impact on the greenbelt – that is unavoidable.”

Graphic from South Gloucestershire Council She said developing on the greenbelt around Siston and Warmley would help tackle “shocking” east-west employment inequalities in South Gloucestershire. Cllr Willmore said there were more jobs than working-age residents in the North Fringe but that in the East Fringe there was just 0.4 of a job for every adult. “That means over half the adult working population of the East Fringe has to leave the East Fringe every single day of their working lives to get to work,” she said. “We have to tackle that

economic inequality and that means bringing economic change to the East Fringe.” Council co-leader Cllr Ian Boulton (Labour, Staple Hill & Mangotsfield) said he had been determined to ensure politics had not come into the plan’s preparation. “There will be winners, there will be losers. However, it is based purely on evidence,” he said. The final plan is not expected to be adopted until Sept 2025. By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Winter water health check Don’t get caught out by the cold this winter – follow our top tips to stay warm and leak free. 1. Protect exposed pipes Wrap them up with lagging. If they freeze they could burst and leak. 2. Check your outdoor taps Look for drips (these can cause frozen pipes). Wrap them up too. 3. Find your stop tap You’ll be able to turn the water off quicker in an emergency.

4. Look after your boiler Check your boiler is serviced so it’s fighting fit to keep you warm all winter. 5. Going away? Don’t forget to keep your heating on low (min 14ºC), to help stop your pipes from freezing while you’re away.

n LETTER

n ADVERTORIAL

Recycle your tree - hassle free! THIS year as you set out to buy a real tree for Christmas give some thought to how you can recycle it once the festivities are over. A real tree is a lovely thing to have but clearing it away after the festive season can be a hassle. St Peter’s Hospice has a team of volunteers who’ll collect real Christmas trees from your doorstep and recycle them for you in exchange for a recommended donation of £15-£20 or whatever you can afford. It’s a way to help a local charity and help the environment too. The Christmas Tree Collection scheme takes place on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January 2024 at selected postcodes across Bristol, Somerset and South Gloucestershire including BS4, BS5, BS7, BS9, BS15, BS16, BS20, BS21 BS30, BS41 and BS48. Ron’s mum was one of the first patients cared for by St Peter’s Hospice in the 1980s and over the years, some of his friends have been cared for by the hospice too, so the charity was the natural choice for him as a volunteer. Ron helped to get the Christmas Tree Collection started and says his favourite thing about the event is: “Knowing that we have the back-up of so many local businesses who provide use of their premises, vehicles and machinery to collect, store and chip the trees. “Tree collections are so convenient – simply leave them outside your door and we’ll take them away. No fuss, no mess, no bother!” St Peter’s Hospice community fundraiser Sophie Cullinane says: “Our annual tree collection is back and this year we’re delighted to have Arthur David on board as our delivery partner, supporting us with this year’s collection and logistics. We hope this year’s collection will be a huge success and raise even more funds to enable us to provide comfort and care to patients and families across Bristol.” Registration opens at midday on 1 December. To book your tree collection see: https://www.stpetershospice.org/treecollection

Ten years of Kingswood Foodbank n In 2013, members of the Bourne Christian Centre identified a need for a foodbank in Kingswood. Following discussions with the organisation that ran the only other foodbank (at the time) in East Bristol, they started to adapt their premises in Waters Road to accommodate a foodbank. They appealed to members of other local churches for help to staff it. That help was soon forthcoming and on 4th November 2013, the Kingswood Foodbank opened its doors for the first time. It welcomed two clients, one a single person, the other a parent with a child. How times have changed – this year we are feeding an average 100 people a week. A 10-year need for a foodbank can never be a cause for celebration. What can be celebrated though is all the work performed by past and present volunteer members of staff. They have done a marvellous job and I love being with them. What can also be celebrated is the incredible support the foodbank has received by way of donations: food, other products and money. Local schools, churches, supermarkets, businesses, community groups, youth organisations, church groups and individuals have all contributed. There are hundreds of stories we could tell. I will mention just one. We know of a young person who, through no fault of their own, was left with no food on Christmas Day. I say no food but what I mean is no food other than that which we, and you, provided. Going without food on any day is bad enough but imagine having nothing to eat on Christmas Day! Earlier I used the word ‘local’ but our clients are spread far beyond Kingswood and likewise our donors – Speedwell, Hanham, Staple Hill, Oldland Common, Warmley, Fishponds, Longwell Green, Mangotsfield, Summerhill, Whitehall and St George are amongst the locations we deliver to and receive donations from. I would like to think that, in November 2033, I, or more likely my successor, will not have to write a 20th anniversary posting as the need for us will have gone away. But that is not something I feel confident about. Once again, thank you all for your 10 years of amazing support. Peter Shears, Kingswood Foodbank

hanham&longwellgreenvoice n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR 10

December, 2023

Support our independent shops this Christmas CHRISTMAS thoughts are undoubtedly turning to shopping: please buy local and support our fantastic independent shops this winter. We have a huge bounty of small, independent shops, selling everything from toys to plants and records to hampers. They’re the beating heart of the West’s communities, doing much to enrich our lives. But they’ve faced huge challenges - soaring energy bills, record inflation, and the cost-of living crisis. That’s created a perfect storm for many stores. It’s why I’ve been offering £15,000 green grants for pubs, cafes and others, so they can install more energy efficient equipment. I’m proud of this. Companies are cutting their bills and CO2 emissions by seven tonnes on average - great for their wallets and our precious planet.

One group I met recently, who’ve started their Christmas shopping, are care leavers benefiting from a new West of England-wide free bus travel scheme I’ve just introduced. The youngsters joined me on board a WESTlink minibus and told me about how the scheme means they can better access work, get to appointments, enjoy more days out, and, yes, grab bits and bobs for loved ones at the shops, too. I then went from a bright green WEST link to a 41-tonne lorry! HGVs are crucial in the Christmas shopping story, ensuring festive goods in our stores. But we’ve all seen the impact of a regional and national shortage of drivers, in terms of empty supermarket shelves and prices being driven up, all adding to the ongoing cost-ofliving crisis. It’s why I created a scheme last year to recruit and train new HGV drivers.

While it was not easy, I’m pleased to say we have recruited over 230 in 12 months. And, of course, Christmas is about spending time with loved ones, sometimes travelling across the West to do so. The good thing for those with December birthdays is they can do that by hopping on the buses – for FREE. So, if it’s your birthday coming up, please enjoy the festive season in style by getting your Birthday Bus pass - details at www.birthdaybus. co.uk. We’ve recently had a little taster of chilly weather, but I know for many, reports of ice and snow don’t bring hope of snowman building! It’s why I’m once again running a ‘Keep Warm this Winter’ drive, as it is vital to stay above 17°C, especially if you’re ill, an older person, or have young children. Fuel costs are still

As well as watching the squad train, the girls were given a taste of what it’s like to be a Lioness as they took part in their own training sessions on the same pitches used by the England teams. Ruby said: “I really enjoyed the event as I got to watch the Lionesses train at St Georges. It was an amazing experience to watch Mary Earps and Ellie and the other keepers train. It was great to train with their coaches too and I learned so much. I also got to see St Georges facilities and had a Q&A session with the Lionesses. We all also got the new England kit too. It was a great day!” Katherine Ogden, principal of King’s Oak Academy, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Ruby as she develops her exceptional football skills at a national level. Ruby is a brilliant student and member of the King’s Oak Academy community, and we are really looking forward to seeing how Ruby continues to progress and display her sporting talents over the coming years.”

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI

HANHAM EVENING WI

OUR November meeting was our Annual Meeting. We started with the reading of the reports from the secretary, treasurer and president. Committee members were introduced to the members along with our advisor Lorna Tarr who then took over proceedings. Sandra Hill was elected as president for another year. Two members were presented with certificates for being in Longwell Green WI for 25 years. After the business of our Annual Meeting, we had time for “Speed Friending” where we all moved round tables talking to members, some of which we don’t always get a chance to talk to. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves learning new things about members and introducing themselves to each other. After this there was social time with tea or coffee and delicious cakes. A post box topper and a display at The Centre in Longwell Green were put up for Remembrance Day. Many people have commented on how much they enjoy seeing them so look out for the Christmas post box topper and display. Some of our members are going on a trip to Warwick Castle where the rooms are dressed for Christmas and there is also a craft

“A RESOUNDING success” - so said Branch President Pam Hunt following this year’s Autumn Fayre. And it was not just Pam and branch members that thought that way. Many of the stallholders were highly appreciative of the hard work and effort that had gone into organising the day to make it the success it was. In lovely warmautumnal sunshine, the event attracted nearly thirty stalls selling quality items including arts and crafts, toys, paintings, spices, pastries, and Christmas items. There were also representatives from the University of the Third Age present to explain the nature of their work. One of the highlights of the day was the raffle where there were ten hampers on offer as prizes, The day was once again very well supported and it is fast becoming a focal point for the local community as they prepare for Christmas by taking the opportunity to pick up a bargain or two or just have a chat and socialise with friends over a cup of coffee – and of course a piece of WI cake. The Branch found it rewarding to hear many stallholders praise the event and reserve tables for next year and it is very grateful to everyone that came along in support. We would also like to thank Hanham Community Centre for their support. November was also the month for the branch AGM. As another year slipped by this gave us the chance to reflect on what has proved to be a highly successful year of events, meetings, and memorable moments. The Committee was re-elected unopposed and the programme

fayre for people to look round and buy some Christmas gifts. We also have our Christmas Craft Day in December where members and friends will be able to try their hand at making paper Christmas decorations, sock snowmen, earrings, and other crafts. Members are looking forward to our Christmas celebration at our December meeting where we will have a two course sit down meal followed by entertainment. Longwell Green WI would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group, skittles and social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month, we meet at The Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com, telephone 0117 9864782 or come along on the meeting evening. Linda Muller

for 2024 was agreed in outline and once again there will be a variety of events and meetings to entertain and educate members and we will be telling you about them as the year unfolds. To round off the evening off we treated ourselves to some wine and cheese. We are now looking forward to our Christmas meal which this year is at Hanham Hall with catering provided by Ivy’s Café. And finally, a very merry Christmas and happy new year to the readers and we hope you will enjoy reading about our activities next year. Dianna Coles SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI OUR meeting in November was led by Charlotte, our new vicepresident, and a jolly good job she did, too! We started with a talk from Nicky Harvey all about ‘the trials and tribulations of triathlons’. After a cuppa and the raffle, we discussed our Xmas party in December. We will show one of the films that we proudly starred in and produced, along with party games and an American supper. For our first meeting in January 2024 we will be joined again by Philomena, who will run a session of armchair Zumba. We will give a warm welcome to new visitors, so just turn up for a complimentary visit to see what the WI has to offer. We meet on the second Thursday of the month in the vestry of the chapel in Main Road, Shortwood, and our next meeting is on December 14 at 7.30pm. Crackdown on car litter louts SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has launched an initiative targeting those who discard their litter from vehicles. The council’s Street Enforcement service has been extended to include this new area of action, using the Littering from Vehicles (outside London) Regulations which authorises local authorities to carry out enforcement against the registered keepers of vehicles from which litter is thrown or ejected. The council is able to deal with these offences by issuing Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) which carry a fine of £100, with a reduced rate for payment within the first 10 days of £50. Evidence will be accepted in the form of dashcam footage, CCTV or mobile phone footage, along with professional witness accounts from the police or council officers. Where an offence is identified the council will send a ‘Notice to Owner’ advising the vehicle’s registered keeper where and when the offence was committed along with the PCN. The introduction of this initiative will support priorities such as reducing litter on the A4174 Ring Road and Operation Tiedown (waste falling from commercial vehicles). Anyone with dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage of a littering from vehicles offence can report it to the council via www.southglos.gov.uk/reportit Councillor Leigh Ingham, cabinet member responsible for environmental enforcement at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “We’re really pleased to increase our ability to tackle littering in the area by introducing this initiative. We’re working hard to keep our local roads and streets clean and take littering offences very seriously. Throwing litter from a car is completely unacceptable, whether it’s moving or not. It makes roadsides look awful."

New row over plans to change black bin collections

A COUNCIL leader has accused the Government of acting like King Canute trying to hold back the tide on recycling, amid a fresh row over plans to reduce black bin collections in South Gloucestershire. The authority is consulting residents about whether general waste collections should be cut from fortnightly to every three or even four weeks. It says black bin rubbish is reducing as recycling rates rise, so it is not necessary to collect it as regularly - and this would also save money as it is forced to make cuts. But in November the government announced it intends to order councils to collect non-recyclable waste at least every other week. Opposition Conservative councillors criticised the Liberal Democrat/Labour administration for relying on reduced black bin collections when there was a danger they could be scuppered by the Government. Rachael Hunt (Con,

Emersons Green), who was in charge of recycling under the previous Tory administration, told a cabinet meeting on November 13: “The new administration has chosen to put out proposals in recent months which financially rely heavily on cutting back bin collections to three- or four-weekly to succeed. “The Government’s recent announcement about developing consistency with fortnightly black bin collections across the country has not been an unexpected development. This has been a risk noted at all stages in our process. “The new administration has chosen to put out proposals in recent months which financially rely heavily on cutting back bin collections to three- or fourweekly to succeed.”

The council says no decision has yet been made and it will consider residents’ feedback from the current public consultation, which runs until January 7, as well as any changes to legal requirements from Whitehall. Cabinet member for climate Louise Harris (Lib Dem, Dodington) said the plans had been under discussion for two years, adding: “Your previous administration actually submitted the original plans that talked about changing the bin collection from two-weekly to three-weekly or even four-weekly as quite a lot of authorities do, so I’m not really sure why that comes as a complete surprise to you.” Council co-leader Ian Boulton (Lab, Staple Hill &

SHOPLIFTING crimes in the Avon and Somerset police area have doubled over the past two years, according to the latest data. Almost 14,000 cases were reported in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and Somerset last month. The force is now trialling new ways of making reporting crime easier for shop workers, amid rising rates across the country. The force recorded 13,880 shoplifting crimes in October, compared with 6,720 in October 2021. Chief constable Sarah Crew was grilled about what her force is doing to tackle the growing issue during a performance and accountability board on November 14. Mark Shelford, the police and crime commissioner, said: “The public feel that shoplifting is not taken seriously by the police, as do some people in the retail trade. Even though some instances of shoplifting might be of low value, the cumulative effect is significant.” Ms Crew said: “We’re

17

Police switch focus from drugs to shoplifting and scooters currently trialling an innovative QR code reporting system, that enables instant easier access for staff in retail premises to access our reporting systems much more efficiently. We’ve trialled that in Bristol and it’s been successful, and we’re rolling it out to Bath now and then across the area.” The same meeting heard that as the police focus on issues such as shoplifting, burglary and electric scooters, arrests for drug crimes have plummeted. The force was facing increasing demand through emergency calls, which meant fewer officers were available for proactive policing, such as disrupting organised crime groups and drug trafficking. The force is also moving more into “non-crime areas”. Mr Shelford told Ms Crew: “There are two measures both going in the wrong direction:

recorded crime and disruptions. This suggests that the actions you’ve been taking to improve are either not working, or not working consistently.” Since May last year, a specialist team at Avon & Somerset Police charged 39 offenders, who have received nearly 100 years in custody between them for drugs and firearms offences, while 24 offenders are still awaiting sentencing. The force seized drugs with a street value of over £2.5 million. Over the last 12 months officers also disrupted 50 county lines. Ms Crew said: “For drug trafficking crimes, we do look out of kilter with the national picture. “The time available for proactive policing has been eroded by an increase in reactive demands — whether that’s rising 999 calls, increases in the

Sarah Crew complexity of crime and demand, or policing moving into other areas of non-crime. “Our Operation Remedy team has needed to expand to tackle a wider array of very understandable priorities, such as burglary and retail theft. “At the moment we’re working on the anti-social and criminal use of electric scooters for instance. So the capability to be proactive on drugs has shrunk.” By Alex Seabrook, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Stop mental health stigma WHEN discussing mental health, we can quickly move to sharing wellbeing and self-care tips. This is important, but let's also talk about kindness and stigma. One in four people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year, with around one in six reporting experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England. Anyone can get a mental health problem, and the causes of mental health problems can be very complicated. Higher risks are linked to several factors, including social inequality and disadvantages, discrimination and social exclusion, challenges with physical health and traumatic experiences. The groups we know that are more likely to be affected include people who identify as LGBTQIA+, Black or Black British people, women aged 16-24, people with overlapping problems including

homelessness, substance misuse and contact with the criminal justice system. Social justice matters. Everyone copes and responds differently when times are tough for them. Be gentle with yourself and those around you. Just because others seem to cope, there is no right or wrong way to manage or be in any situation. Don’t ever judge others. Many things impact our lives differently: family situations, national and international events, health and relationship issues and financial pressures. Don’t expect to always feel ok or be perfect at everything; do also make allowance for others too. We must urgently remove the stigma attached to taking medications to manage our mental health. It can be awkward to speak with someone about their wellbeing, but a thoughtful message/act communicating you care for them and are supportive makes a difference.

We can all boost our mental wellbeing by avoiding social isolation and building stronger and closer relationships. Pursuing shared interests and volunteering builds a sense of belonging and self-worth. Get Active. Physical health and fitness activity releases chemical changes in your brain, which can help to change your mood positively. Eat well. Evidence shows that consuming junk-unhealthy food hurts your mood and waistline. Consider also taking Vitamin D supplements in the winter months. Set boundaries and limit your time on social media. This can help you focus on other things. Cherish Duvet Time - good sleep boosts your mental health. Connect with the outdoors by watching through a window, looking at trees or watching birds fly past. Try to enjoy the moment, whatever you’re doing. Speak with your GP if you

Mini motorcycle ace Ethan, 7, wins trophies on the track MOTORBIKE racer Ethan Bayliss is getting a taste for life on the track at the tender age of seven. The North Common youngster has just finished his first season in the FAB-Racing British championship, where he entered the rookie class for children aged five to 12. Ethan comes from a family of bikers – his nanny and grandad, who ride Harleys, dad Paul and mum Laura. Paul said: “Some toddlers have rides on cars, Ethan had a toy motorbike. “Several years ago, I rode a mini moto as a hobby and was keen to give Ethan a go. Although Ethan was not a fan at first, especially after his first crash, he didn't give up and now we can't stop him talking about it.”

Paul has since stepped back from riding to be Ethan’s mechanic and accompanies him to races. “The rounds are all over the UK, from Wales to Kent to Cumbria. We even take him to Spain once a year to a track called Finestrat for one week of training prior to the race season.” Meanwhile, the rest of the

family watch the live broadcasts on YouTube. Paul said: “Ethan loves the thrill of racing against others and watching the video streams back once the race has finished.” Ethan, who goes to Cherry Garden Primary School in Bitton, rides a Blata Ultima motorcycle with a 40cc restricted engine, which is capable of around 50mph on the straights. “He loves nothing more than dragging his knees across the floors in the corners,” said Paul. A highlight of Ethan’s debut season was finishing third overall in a seven-round championship at Stretton circuit. “Ethan is so unbelievably proud when taking his trophies to show in school. Racing has certainly built his confidence off the track as well as on it.”

Impatience costs man £1,200

Give an antique ... I can’t quite believe we’re in December already! Where does the time go? I am very much aware that times are hard for many people – rising costs and increasing demands on our bank accounts make every penny count at the moment, and the cost of Christmas presents only adds to the worries for many. So, this year, I’m spreading the message – give an antique for Christmas! The benefits are three-fold – firstly, you’ll be giving someone a unique and thoughtful present – perhaps an early edition of their favourite book, a vintage bedside lamp, or a decorative picture frame for a treasured family photo. Secondly, it’s the quintessential ‘green’ gift and the ultimate form of recycling and thirdly - and probably most importantly – it’ll very likely be more cost effective. Secondhand quality objects can often be picked up for a fraction of the cost of the retail equivalent. Whilst I very often wax lyrical about the expensive objects we’ve sold, it’s not all about that for us in the auction world. Our own sales cater for every pocket and every budget. A mere ten pounds could buy you something that someone would treasure and love for years to come. And this isn’t some cheeky advert for our auctions – there are a myriad of online shops, auction websites and vintage shops around for you to find those special gifts. Some of my favourite gifts that I’ve received were second-hand objects that likely cost very little, yet meant so much. So, relieve some of the financial stress this year, and give an antique for Christmas! Andy Stowe Auctioneum Ltd

A MAN who lost his patience in the queue for the tip and dumped his rubbish on a verge has been ordered to pay more than £1,200. South Gloucestershire Council said Timothy Sullivan, aged 47, had driven from the centre to nearby Siston Hill and left black bags and other waste by the roadside. The council’s street cleaning team found the rubbish there in July and environmental enforcement officers searched the bags, finding paperwork relating to Sullivan’s address in Clematis Road, Lyde Green. A spokesperson said Sullivan was called in to the council’s offices in Yate, where he was shown photos of the rubbish and documentation. The spokesperson said: “He admitted that some of the waste was his, and claimed that he had been going to the Mangotsfield Sort It recycling centre but, after waiting 15 minutes in a queue, he had lost his patience and drove up to Siston Common, where he deposited the black bags.” Sullivan was summonsed to Bristol Magistrates Court in November, when he pleaded guilty to fly-tipping and was ordered to pay a fine of £320, along with £819 in costs and a £128 victim surcharge, making a total of £1,267. Cabinet councillor for environmental enforcement Leigh Ingham said: “We all have a responsibility to ensure our waste is disposed of in a responsible and lawful way, not just discarded with an expectation that others will deal with it. “This waste could have easily been disposed of at one of our Sort It recycling centres, but due to impatience, it was just dumped on the roadside. “South Gloucestershire Council will always pursue fly-tip related prosecutions through the courts and our award-winning environmental enforcement team has a 100% record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence.” Anyone who sees fly-tipping is encouraged to report it by calling the council’s StreetCare helpdesk on 01454 868000, emailing streetcare@ southglos.gov.uk or visiting www.southglos.gov.uk/flytipping

It's The Shining! MANY Christmas lights are going up around the area but one family is still basking in the glow of their Halloween display. Zoey Ryland stages an annual ‘horror garden’ extravanganza in Cadbury Heath to raise money for the Crohn’s and Colitis charity in memory of her mum Vivien Gidman, who died in 1999, aged 48. Helping her create the display are her husband Bruce and her uncle Robin Golding, Vivien’s brother. This year, they raised more than £1,000 – and they are already planning next year’s show.

New role for Little Heath A HOME in Cadbury Heath that opened three years ago has supported 700 people to return home after a hospital stay. Now, the 24-bed Little Heath has changed its focus from reablement to providing nursing and care for people who do not have a dementia. Brunelcare, which runs the home, is also launching a new service in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council that offers four ‘step-up’ beds. These will be for people from the community to access short term support for up to eight weeks, before returning to live independently in their own home. Brunelcare says this is in recognition of the fact that there are a number of people who want some level of nursing support, but for whom a dementiaspecialist home isn’t the right setting. Oona Goldsworthy, chief cxecutive, said: “We know we have something really special in our team and facilities at Little Heath, and that’s why we’ve chosen to repurpose the service. “This will be a new type of service for Brunelcare, and we believe it’s an exciting opportunity to offer support to even more members of our community.” Lewis Farrell, Little Heath manager, said: “I would like to thank my team and the staff who have

Little Heath Reablement is rated ‘Good’ in all domains by the Care Quality Commission.

CHRISTMAS IN KINGSWOOD AND HANHAM Christmas is fast approaching, and as usual at this time of year we feature photographs illustrating scenes from Christmases past. The two photographs this year show scenes from both Kingswood and Hanham. The first (above), from 1983, shows the Lion’s Club Christmas float on Kingswood High Street. The second photograph (right), from 1975, shows the Hanham toddlers’ club Christmas party at Hanham Folk Centre. Kingswood Heritage Museum wishes a “Merry Christmas” to all its visitors and supporters, and to all readers of the Kingswood Voice.

End of the season

Kingswood Heritage Museum closed for its annual winter break on Sunday 26th November, and will reopen for the new season in April next year. While the Museum is closed volunteers will be working hard to prepare next year’s exhibitions, including two new exhibitions focussed on the Kingswood area. Further exhibitions will spotlight the areas of Warmley, Bridgeyate, Webb’s Heath and Syston. The railways in our area will be featured in two new exhibitions: A presentation of photographs of the railways in Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, Warmley and Bitton In April only, an exhibition – “On and off the Rails” – telling the story of railways across South Gloucestershire.

The popular "Knitting Natter” Group meets at Kingswood Heritage Museum

every Wednesday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Bring your knitting, crochet and embroidery for an enjoyable and sociable afternoon. The entry fee is £3, and all proceeds go to the Museum. n BOWLS

December, 2023

Trophies galore! ONE of the most enjoyable and eagerly anticipated events in the Keynsham Bowling Club calendar is the annual presentation lunch, when trophies are given to the winners of the in-house competitions that took place during the bowling season. This was held this year at Saltford Golf Club, when nearly 70 members gathered for a three-course lunch before the presentations were made. We welcomed two guests from Meryton Place Care Home, who this season became our shirt and principal sponsor. They were Natalie, the home’s manager, and Rosie, the regional community relations lead. Our pictures show the trophies on display before the

presentations, as club president John Nix and vice president Margaret Church discuss the running order with secretary David Hockney. Above, we see the trophies in the safe hands of the winners, who will be their custodians for the next 12 months. They can also choose to receive a small commemorative trophy to keep. Mike Barrow
