'Help us protect green belt' PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to join a campaign group to help fend off development on green space in the area. About 116 households are members of Hanham District Green Belt Conservation Society, an active group fighting against plans to build on protected spaces. They say they would like to increase their membership which costs just £5 per household per year - in order to give them greater power to campaign and lobby against proposals which would see much of the green belt in the area obliterated. The call comes as the society awaits news on controversial plans to build 96 homes on Hanham Cricket Club and another 105 houses on green belt land further along Abbots Road. Chairman Alan Jones said the pressure to build so many new homes made this a challenging time for the organisation. Turn to Page 2

'Hanham is a lovely From Page 1 "Hanham is a lovely place to live with sites like Hanham Court dating back to the Domesday Book. The green belt helps separate our villages into their own intimate areas. If all that land was built on, where would Hanham end and Longwell Green start? "These days everyone needs open space, even people who are just driving through. It's so important these days for people's well-being." Mr Jones, who has been chairman for 15 months, described the possibility of homes on the green belt in Abbots Road as a very real prospect. "It does appear a positive threat," he said. "Despite all the housing that is going on at the moment, the greater Hanham and Longwell Green area still has to provide 1,300 homes in the next 20

years. There will always be pressure to build on the green belt." Mr Jones said he appreciates the nation has to build more homes but says the society is pushing for brownfield sites. "If they build homes on the cricket club and Abbots Road, it would completely change the character of the area. We would lose our open countryside - it would be decimated. "As a society we've been pressing for the old Kleeneze site in Hanham to be designated as a brownfield developable site. It's now been taken over by Homes England which is the right organisation to deliver modern, innovative accommodation. "Do people need three or four bedroomed detached or semidetached homes in the green belt? No, they need affordable accommodation near shops, transport links and facilities. This is what the Kleeneze site offers."

y place to live - let's keep it that way' Mr Jones said any move to allow homes in Abbots Road would have a "domino effect". "If it happens, they would have to improve the road network as it's currently too narrow. Once that happens, it will enable a lot more housing, including behind Pearsall Road." The call to boost membership was made by the society during their AGM where more than 50 people packed into Hanham Hall to find out the latest news on development threats. It follows a move by green belt landowner - referred to in a document as a Mr F Francis - to remove the land's special protection. Last year he hired commercial property specialists Colliers International to put forward his case, which, if successful, would pave the way for him to find a developer. Colliers made representations to the West of England Joint Spatial Plan - which sets out a

blueprint for future development which will help meet housing demands for the next 20 years - stating reasons why both sites in Abbots Road should be earmarked for development. The society also put forward representations to the plan stating why the land should retain its green belt status. As explained to the meeting, the outcome of the plan is as yet unknown, and will need to be examined by independent government planning inspectors at a series of public hearings, expected to start in May. Once adopted the JSP will guide South Gloucestershire Council, as well as three neighbouring authorities, in the development of their own Local Plan and should indicate whether any move to build on Hanham green belt is likely to be approved. The landowner has approached the trustees of Hanham Community Centre,

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

which owns the cricket club, and offered to build new facilities further along Abbots Road if they sell their current site. Trustees were invited to the society's AGM but were unable to attend and instead sent a letter from chairman Kevin Lawrence which was read out. It said trustees were looking to redevelop the community centre to "provide first class facilities for the people of Hanham" and went on to say: "To achieve this goal the trustees have been engaged in a number of potential projects that could enable this; some of these involving changes to and/or relocation of our sports ground. However, I would stress, all such discussions are currently exploratory and without commitment." Mr Jones said: "It's great the trustees want to improve facilities, and the community centre does need upgrading. But the question is how are they

going to pay for that? They have a big asset in the cricket club." Mr Jones said anyone who appreciates the open space surrounding Hanham should consider joining the society. "We are a strongly united group and would welcome further membership including any expertise to help us push our case forward. We want likeminded people to come together to form the right resistance to this threat. "We do a lot of work behind the scenes, analysing complex documents and putting forward our case to protect the green belt. These developers are pretty cute so we feel we've got to be on the ball. Greater numbers will give us more power, bigger clout and will make us a stronger force to be reckoned with." Armistice centenary: Hanham pays respects PEOPLE in Hanham paid their respects on Armistice Day to those who have fallen in the line of duty. The annual service at the war memorial at Hanham Community Centre drew hundreds of men, women and children who wore their poppies with pride. This year's service was particularly poignant as it marked the centenary of the end of the First World War. Wreaths from various organisations and individuals were laid including ones from the Royal British Legion, the Labour Party, MP Chris Skidmore, South Gloucestershire Council, Hanham and Hanham Abbots parish councils, Hanham Youth Centre, Hanham History Society and Hanham WI. Clay poppies made by various local scouting and guiding groups were placed along the walkway leading to the memorial. The service was conducted by the Reverend Peter Cook from Hanham Baptist Church with several other church representatives addressing the audience and leading prayers, tributes and hymns. The Last Post, played by young trumpeter Matthew Mackerras, was followed by a two minute silence. The Reverend James Jang, from Hanham United Reform Church, remarked on how pleased he was to see so many people turn up to pay their respects. Following the service, refreshments were served in the community centre.

Pedal power for Pudsey Pyjama run is the best fun! PUPILS at The Meadows Primary School held a record number of activities for Children in Need and raised £381.96. The day was organised by children on the school council, which has been introduced by headteacher Joy Mounter to give the youngsters a voice. A highlight was a Pyjama Run around the Bitton school's field. A cake sale and wearing spotty clothes were among the other fundraisers. Mrs Mounter said: "Part of our new school vision is to create memorable experiences for our children, who are at the heart of everything we do. "We are seeing great improvements in lessons - all teaching and learning is now good and our results have rocketed - but we also want children to have fun at our inclusive school."

A SCHOOLBOY has raised more than £300 for Children in Need after embarking on a 25 mile cycle ride. Alistair Combe pedalled from his home in Longwell Green to Bath, despite the fact the furthest he had previously managed was 15 miles. Fuelled by a supply of jelly beans, the eight-year-old went through the Two Tunnels to Midford and via country roads to Limpley Stoke before picking up the canal path back into Bath and returning home on the railway path. Mum Martine said: "Alistair made steady progress along the Bristol-Bath railway path into Bath, and was especially speedy cycling through the Two Tunnels between Bath and Midford. "Changing gears proved tricky in the cold with gloves on but fortunately we didn’t encounter many hills!" Alistair, a pupil at Longwell Green Primary School, and his

mum stopped for an early lunch and a well-deserved hot chocolate to warm up near the Dundas Aquaduct and managed to avoid cycling into the canal on the narrow path back towards Bath. Martine said: "Cycling through Bath proved challenging with some busy on-road sections and hundreds of pedestrians laden with shopping randomly stepping into the road, but Alistair cycled exceptionally well and we safely rejoined the Bristol-Bath railway path for the homeward stretch. With tiring legs Alistair insisted on a few more jelly bean breaks, before making it home midafternoon. "It was something he took upon himself to do and he was determined to see it through. Alistair was very upbeat and

positive and the whole thing and didn't even seem to tire. He paced himself and finished with a smile."

Your chance to do good IN JUST over a month, we’ll be planning our New Year celebrations, and thinking of changes we might want to make in 2019. Local family charity, Home Start Bristol asks parents and grandparents what better way to kick-start the New Year than with a new challenge that can benefit both you, and others in your area? Home Start Bristol is coming to Kingswood this January to run its popular, accredited Volunteer Preparation training course. The course runs for 36 hours over nine weeks. Course times are designed to tie in with school hours and volunteers are asked to attend one day a week. Beverley Symonds, Home Start Bristol’s scheme manager, said: “When you volunteer for Home Start Bristol, you’ll be a lifeline for a family: helping them get back on their feet and develop the skills they need to cope in the future. Our preparation courses

equip new volunteers with everything they need to support a family. The courses are really interactive, great fun and you’ll meet a group of new, like-minded people. In recent questionnaires, 100% of trained volunteers would recommend the course to a friend. Another bonus is that it’s Level 2 accredited and can be a great stepping stone to future careers”. Home Start Bristol is an independent registered charity supporting struggling families with at least one child under five. It recruits and trains volunteers, and matches them with families. Home Start Bristol’s mission is to make a lasting and positive impact on the development of children, and the health and welfare of the family. If you would like to become a Home-Start Bristol volunteer, visit the website: www. homestartbristol.org.uk or phone 0117 950 1170.

Warmley Park School gets a £5.8m revamp THE expansion of Warmley Park School has been completed, thanks to a £5.8 million investment backed by South Gloucestershire Council. The overall redevelopment at Warmley Park includes an extension to provide the new post-16 accommodation and facilities and refurbishment to enhance accessibility. Further improvements include better external areas, play facilities and car parking, as well as the provision of new and enhanced specialist facilities for design technology/practical science, drama and dance, art and food technology accessible to all children across the age range including sixth form. South Gloucestershire Council faces considerable and increasing cost pressures around provision for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Some children need to be transported to more distant special school provision, at an average cost £20,000 a year. The council wants to address this issue by providing more SEND places in the area. The funding for the upgrades comes in addition to investment into three SEND projects over the next three years, which will result in Warmley Park providing additional pre-school places for children with Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. Council leader Toby Savage, who is also the Cabinet Member for Schools, visited Warmley Park last month to see the final stages of work and to talk to head teacher Lisa Parker, staff and students, He said: “It is fantastic that this ambitious project has been completed.”

Step forward for AEK Boco's plan for floodlights THE results of a public consultation into potential changes at Greenbank Playing Field have been published. South Gloucestershire Council has been seeking the views of local people before making a decision on whether to allow AEK Boco to seek planning permission for eight 15m high floodlights, 1.8m fencing and two covered stands for about 100 people. If permission is given, the club can then apply for planning consent and a further consultation will take place. The report concludes

that there is a "great deal of support" for the club's contribution to the local community, especially in terms of positive activities for young people. The report also acknowledges there are a number of concerns about the plans which include noise, anti-social behaviour and increased traffic. Other issues include light pollution from floodlights and fears of reduced public access. Hanham has been getting in gear for December's festivities by preparing the Christmas tree which takes pride of place every year on the roundabout at the gateway to the area. As part of the Love Hanham High Street initiative, Mat and Jake from John Wood's Cycles have been busy collecting the tree, taking it to the roundabout and setting it up. They will also do the same with mini trees outside numerous shops and businesses along the High Street. MP: I'm reassured on Cossham's future MP Chris Skidmore has visited Cossham Hospital to discuss the temporary closure of its popular birth centre. The Kingswood MP said he wanted to press home the importance of the centre reopening as soon as possible. North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs the unit, told Mr Skidmore that the decision was taken due to the high number of women needing induction of labour at Southmead Maternity Unit, as a result of the introduction of a new national policy to reduce stillbirths. The temporary closure will ensure appropriate levels of midwives and staff. Mr Skidmore met North Bristol NHS Trust chief executive Andrea Young and other representatives from the trust’s Clinical Services and Women & Children’s Health departments, who assured him that high priority was being given to ensuring the centre will be reopened soon, and that the

"I am pleased the trust is focusing on ensuring the safety of local women and babies in their care, and was delighted to hear they are making good progress on recruiting more midwives and staff, which will enable the centre to reopen at the end of February." The closure of the unit has

prompted a mum to launch a petition to ensure it is opened back up as soon as possible. Lauren Pinkett, who gave birth to her two daughters and son there, describes the centre as "absolutely faultless". Her online petition (bit. ly/2CGTxVO) had reached nearly 4,000 names at the time the Voice went to print. Mr Skidmore's likely opponent at the next election, Nicola Bowden-Jones, has been collecting signatures in Kingswood for the campaign. Mr Skidmore said his family has strong links with the historic hospital. "Cossham is a local treasure, and I will always stand up to ensure that it is open to the community, after it was threatened with closure before 2010. I hope that I can continue to help make the case also for additional facilities at Cossham, which has been a beacon of support and healthcare for our local community."

Rotary gives lifesaving device to centre

KINGSWOOD Rotary Club has handed over a life-saving device to a popular activities centre. Members presented the Park Centre in Kingswood with a defibrillator as part of their work in the community. The centre, which was previously the Park School, hires out various rooms for events, clubs and parties and is wellused by members of the community. This is the fourth defibrillator that Kingswood Rotary Club has provided – the others have been installed at Kingswood, Warmley and Hanham community centres. Funding for the machine was provided through a grant from Leidos, an American technology/logistics company with a team based at Emersons Green. Kingswood Rotary Club liaised with the company and arranged training for the staff on the use of defibrillators and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is when the heart ceases to pump blood around the body, and unless action is taken very quickly the result will be death or brain damage. Each year around 60,000 people in the UK will suffer from SCA . A victim of SCA will survive if a defibrillator is available to electrically shock the heart back into a normal rhythm, but speed is essential - survival rate falls by around 10 per cent for every minute that defibrillation is delayed. Ava grows her hair - so she can give it to charity

Ava grew her hair as long as possible before donating it to the Princess Trust

"She'd heard that someone else at her school had donated her hair and came home one day and told us that's what she wanted to do," she said. "We didn't think she'd stick at growing her hair and that she'd get bored and have it cut but she didn't - she was adamant that's what she wanted to do.

"She was growing it for about a year as she'd always kept it quite short. I think she's amazing. She is a very kind and thoughtful girl and I'm so proud of her." Carol, who lives in Hanham

with Ava's grandad Andy, said: "It has taken Ava well over a year to grow her hair but it is something she has been determined to do. We are very proud of her and think she is incredibly brave."

SHE may be just nine years old but already Ava Bywater is determined to help others. When the Hanham youngster heard about a girl at school who donated her locks to a charity which supplies wigs for children who have lost hair through cancer she thought she'd like to do the same. There was just one problem Ava's hair was too short. But that didn't put the Hanham Abbots junior school pupil off, she just patiently spent the next year growing it. When Ava thought it was long enough to send to the Princess Trust she enlisted the help of her nanny Carol Culver who luckily is a hairdresser. Then, in front of her family, including her 12-year-old brother Ellis, Carol proceeded to cut Ava's locks off ready to send to the charity. Mum Emily said Ava had got a taste for helping others after Ellis recently raised £400 for the Young Carers charity by running three miles around Warmley.

THIS month's images from members of Hanham Photographic Society really invoke the winter season. Steel Art, above, is by Ray Newton while the Young Reindeer, right, is by Diane Williams. RECYCLING bags could soon disappear from the streets of Hanham and Longwell Green. South Gloucestershire Council wants to stop providing the green and white heavy-duty bags, currently used by many residents for cardboard, plastic and metal recycling. Instead, all recyclable waste would be collected from boxes. The council says it can save around £100,000 per year by phasing out bags, which usually only last a year to 18 months before they need to be replaced. It says there are strong environmental reasons to stop using the bags, which are made from non-recyclable plastic, imported from China and shed fragments into the environment as they deteriorate. The council considered scrapping recycling bags three years ago but decided against it after concerns were raised by older and disabled residents. Since then, it says, weekly collections have made storing recyclable waste easier and the assisted collections service has more capacity. The consultation is open until January 25 and a decision is due by March. To take part, visit the council’s consultation webpage at bit.ly/2POqo1T, pick up a paper copy of the survey from libraries or One Stop Shops, call 01454 868154 or email consultation@ southglos.gov.uk.

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm feels the heat THE exceptionally hot and dry summer this year hit Christmas tree growers at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm particularly hard, causing thousands of baby trees to die during the relentless drought and scorching weather. “We saved what we could,” said Simon Maughan, “But the ground was utterly parched and we have to use water responsibly.” The heat was felt right across Europe, and

industry experts believe that almost an entire season’s crop of Christmas trees has been lost, with Denmark, Germany and Poland being the areas hit the worst. A systematic replanting programme has already begun (see picture), but as Simon admits, “It won’t cover all our losses – we’ll just have to write 2018 off as a bad year.” “Customers mustn’t worry about tree shortages, however,” says Simon. “It takes at least 6 years for a Christmas tree to grow to the appropriate height, so the affects of this heatwave will not be felt before 2023.” A silver lining, perhaps, is that because of the heat, many Christmas trees this year are showing first-class foliage. Another Europe-wide phenomenon this year is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. “We can no longer hold people’s information without their consent, which means that this year there will be no Christmas cards sent out to our customers. Rest assured we’ll be back in 2019 – all you have to do is enter our free Christmas Raffle, in which three £100 shopping vouchers are up for grabs.” With the drought behind them, hundreds of Christmas Trees now await harvest at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. Nordman Firs continue to be their biggest seller, with

the Norwegian Spruces a close second. “The benefit of a freshly cut tree is that it will last much longer once you bring it into the house. The latest research still tells us that it is worth watering a cut tree after it has been felled, particularly for Norwegian Spruce, because it keeps the foliage glossier for much longer.” Eager customers wanting to reserve their trees for later cutting are welcome at the Christmas Tree Farm from late November onwards. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open until Christmas Eve, 9am-5pm every day. “Choose and Cut” runs for as long as stocks last. Prices start from just £20. www.frenchaychristmastreefarm.co.uk

n ADVERTISING FEATURE A NEW procedure that could revolutionise the treatment of prostate cancer is being pioneered at a Bristol Hospital. A special hydro gel injected into the patient can mean they are exposed to a much lower dose of radiation during their treatment which, in turn, can result in far fewer side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. The gel, SpaceOAR, is a minimally invasive, water-based hydrogel which lasts for the duration of radiation treatment - up to three months - before being naturally absorbed into the body before passing through the patient’s urine within six months. The gel is injected between the prostate and the rectum increasing the space between the two by an average of 1cm. This space moves the rectum out of the zone of radiation and spares the bowel from irradiation. Professor Amit Bahl, Clinical Oncologist and Clinical Director at Spire Oncology Centre South West in Almondsbury, explained: “The potential side-effects from

radiation exposure are a major concern for men who are given the option of radiotherapy. “SpaceOAR hydrogel is important as it will help give men the confidence that, not only are we doing our best to treat the cancer, we are protecting their long-term quality of life from bowel, urinary and sexual dysfunction.” He was supported by Prof Raj

Persad, a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital, who said: “A number of recent improvements, such as intensitymodulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and the more recent addition of image guidance, have allowed us to be more accurate in the delivery of the radiation to the prostate. “Its immediate proximity to the prostate makes the rectum the primary organ at risk (OAR)

during radiation therapy. Too much radiation exposure can result in long-term side-effects such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, incontinence, bleeding, and mucus discharge. “Oncologists and Urologists are always working together to provide patients with better treatment plans and reduced long-term complications. The introduction of the SpaceOAR gel, which is clinically proven to lower radiation exposure to the surrounding organs and tissues, is a real step in the right direction. “The clinical studies have shown that not only does the gel spare the bowel, it also has positive benefits in reducing urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction (for men who were sexually potent prior to treatment), giving men their life back following treatment.” Professor Bahl added: “In the near future, hydrogel spacing will enable us to push our radiotherapy planning and delivery systems harder, eventually reducing the number of radiotherapy sessions from 20 to 5.”

Men’s Health At Spire Healthcare, we have a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing specialist care for men with prostate, penile, testicular and bladder problems. This may include problems such as difficulty with fertility, erections, prostate cancer and prostate disease, testicular lumps and other male specific conditions. A full list of treatments available at Spire Bristol can be found on our website www.spirebristol.com.

n ARTIST OF THE MONTH

n NEWS

Wartime love story proves a big success

I WAS just a teenager when I first walked into the ‘Cherry Art Center’, then only a tiny shop in Oldland Common opposite the Oldland Village Club (before they moved to the much bigger place in Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green). It was run by picture framer Martyn Holehouse and his artist wife Lynne Holehouse. Lynne was primarily a watercolour painter and taught art classes from the shop several times a week, an artist of considerable talent who had even made it through to the finals of the major TV show ‘Watercolour Challenge’. So the story goes, on my first visit I managed to convince Lynne to let me have a set of artist chalk pastels on the promise to pay them once I sold the picture I wanted to create. As a budding artist I became a regular at the shop for everything from art materials to picture framing and advice from Martyn and Lynne. I was only one of many who came to rely upon their presence in the community for all art matters. My first solo exhibition was arranged on a such shoestring budget and would not have been possible if it had not been for Martyn’s generosity in framing all of my work free of charge. I was fortunate as an artist to gain some successes with awards and exhibitions but I’m not sure that any of it would have been possible at all without their support. In 2009 they moved from Longwell Green to start a new gallery and studio in Bude, the small seaside resort town in north Cornwall. Their business has gone from strength to strength over the years but they will always be missed in Longwell green. A selection of Lynnes paintings can be seen in our gallery on Hanham High Street.

AUTHOR Derek Payne has been overwhelmed by the success of his first book, a true love story set in the First World War. His book signing at Vincent Brown's art gallery, based at Art-i-me in High Street, Hanham, saw scores of people queuing for copies of Letters to Doberitz. Interest in the book was helped by recent coverage on BBC Points West. Derek, a semi-retired entrepreneur, inventor and poet from High Littleton, said: "The book signing was a huge success, to the point that Derek signs a book for Gail Wootton who we sold out of hardback came from Downend to buy a copy. copies long before the close! Vincent Brown, who runs the art "The interest in my book shop in Hanham, and who was exploded after the BBC coverage responsible for the book's cover last week and the response since design. has been humbling, as have the The book signing was held on first readers' reviews, so things November 10 to coincide with are going very well so far for my celebrations to mark the 100th first novel." anniversary of the signing of the The great-grandson of the characters Derek writes about is Armistice.

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI NOVEMBER brings our Annual General Meeting and it is a time when all posts of our Committee are re-elected. Our highly respected President Myra who has been an admiral leader for three years had previously announced that she wished to retire this year. We will sadly miss her management abilities and everyone I know will want to wish her well as she steps down, though of course Myra will still be present at our future meetings. One of our members, Liz, had been nominated to take on the newly vacant role of President and following the formality of a vote, Liz was duly elected to the top job which she accepted in her uplifting maiden speech with members agreeing that our future will as before, undoubtedly continue in safe hands. Being that our meeting had several formalities it was decided to forgo inviting a speaker on this occasion but we did find time for tea, cakes and a couple of quizzes, not forgetting an

Armistice Day. So here we are, December already, our next meeting has a Christmas theme, why not call in and see us and you’ll be made most welcome, please see our details below or give me a call. In the meantime on behalf of all our members, Merry Christmas everyone! Hanham (Afternoon) Women’s Institute meets the second Monday of every month at Hanham Community Centre from 1.30-4pm. Telephone contact 0117 932 5852.

Hanham Evening WI WI members created this striking display of knitted poppies on a wall at Hanham Community Centre all-important natter, mainly to discuss the efforts our members had made to commemorate the Great War Centenary. Our photo shows the numerous poppies covering a wall in the entrance of Hanham Community Centre which our members had knitted, sewn and put together by Wendy for

"TIME flies – especially when you’re enjoying yourself - and we certainly did enjoy ourselves". That was the thought in the minds of many members at the branch AGM as they reflected on some memorable and enjoyable moments, events and trips during the last year. From poppy making in Richmond to visiting Shakespeare country to looking on with amazement at the aviation icon that is Concorde – just some of

the memories from the last twelve months. The meeting conducted its normal business which saw some new members elected to the management committee whilst many of the existing members remained in post. When the normal AGM business concluded the branch was introduced to three guests who had joined us for the evening. The first of these was a representative of St Peter's Hospice who was there to receive a donation from the branch for its chosen charity. In thanking the branch for its kindness, she described how the new home at Brentry had been developed and what the new modern facilities had to offer to its patients. We then heard from two speakers who had come along to talk about mental health. This is a particularly important topic, not just to the branch, but to the WI organisation as a whole. This is because at its annual meeting in 2018 National Federation delegates voted to pass a resolution seeking to tackle the stigma associated

n AROUND THE WIs with mental health problems. The first of these speakers was someone who had first-hand experience of dealing with mental health issues and how difficult it can be to deal with these on a day to day basis. She was followed by a mental health professional who gave us an insight into working within that discipline and the associated problems. Hardy folk of Hanham, and many from further afield, dodged torrential rain storms and strong winds to go along to enjoy the Hanham WI annual autumn fayre in November. The fayre attracted some thirty stalls selling quality items including arts and crafts, garden ornaments, paintings and ornamental lamps, all coming together to make the day a tremendous success. The event was very well supported and people were able to take advantage of some early Christmas shopping, or pick up a bargain or two or just have a chat and socialise with friends over a cup of coffee – and of course a piece of WI cake.

Once again It was very encouraging to hear many stallholders praise the event and reserve tables for next year. The fayre received an unexpected boost this year. Susan Grant, the Asda community champion came along to support the event by not only helping out in the kitchen preparing teas, coffees and bacon rolls but she also, on behalf of Asda, donated a gingerbread house biscuit barrel for the grand raffle. The branch was very pleased to receive this support from Asda. The branch is extremely grateful to everyone that came along and would also like to thank the local businesses and organisations who helped to promote the day. The following morning, Remembrance Sunday, saw a ceremony at the Hanham Cenotaph to remember members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty. At the ceremony, a wreath was laid jointly on behalf of Hanham Evening and Hanham Afternoon branches. Christmas is coming and our

LOCAL author and journalist Maurice Fells has written his twelfth local history book, The Little Book of Somerset, published by The History Press. As with his popular Little Book of Bristol, Maurice has written a compendium of places, people and trivia, about Somerset, where it’s hard to separate history and mystery. The book includes stories about Ashton Court Mansion and the development of Portishead from a small fishing village into a seaside resort for wealthy Bristol merchants in the seventeenth century, and facts galore about this fascinating county.

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP

W Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

ITH the Christmas period fast approaching, this is the perfect time to reflect on the year so far. This year I was delighted to be appointed Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party for Policy and Chair of the newly constituted Conservative Policy Commission by the Prime Minister, working to develop Conservative Party policies that are fit for the future and that can improve the lives of people across our country. As part of the Policy Commission, five Taskforces have been established: Energising our economy, Transforming our public services, Building a fairer society, Sustaining our democracy, and Shaping a Global Britain. This will be an opportunity to trial ideas, but also to allow for a consultative period with the wider public. The Commission’s task forces will undertake the most extensive exercise of policy renewal ever conducted by a party in government. I am proud of the work of the Conservative Policy Commission, which is engaging across the country, listening to party members, communities and businesses, and I hope that this endeavour will help to shape the future thinking of the Conservative party as we approach the start of a new decade, and indeed a decade in government. After seven years in government, our narrative must first be founded on the secure economic base that we have successfully delivered. Employment is at a record high and we have ensured that the lowest earners in

society are better paid, and millions have been taken out of tax altogether. It is a record of achievement unparalleled across Western democracies and should be at the core of the Conservative Party’s vision. The Conservatives must now more than ever be the party of hope, setting out our own positive vision of the future, together with policies that will resonate with the electorate. This will require careful and detailed work which must begin now, focusing not only on the future of taxation, public services and our infrastructure, but on how we preserve and strengthen what we consider most precious in society: communities and institutions that matter. As party vice chairman responsible for policy, I want to ensure that, as Conservatives, we draw on innovative ideas being put forward by a new generation of Tory MPs and members, ensuring that we listen carefully and engage across the country, not simply across Westminster. These are not only opportunities that need to be seized, they are the seeds of hope for a new political narrative, making a renewed case for what the Conservative Party stands for in government. I am very grateful for all the support I have received from local residents this past year, and I have loved, as always, meeting with and getting to know the many people who make up my constituency. I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

n BOOK REVIEW All The Light We Cannot See By Anthony Duerr MARIE-LAURE, blind since the age of six lives in Paris with her father who works as the keeper of keys for The Natural History Museum. He is a talented craftsman and constructs miniature models of the

neighbourhood for his daughter to help her navigate her way around. When war breaks out they flee to St Malo to shelter with Marie –Laure’s great uncle, a recluse who never leaves his house. Unbeknown to Marie-Laure, with them they are carrying the Sea of Flame”, the most valuable gem stone in the museum’s collection. Marie-Laure forms a strong bond with her Great Uncle and inspired by her bravery he

eventually becomes involved in the resistance fight against the Nazi invasion. Orphan Werner, lives with his sister in the German mining town of Zollverien. Werner expects to follow in his father’s footsteps and work down the mines but after discovering a small broken radio which he secretly fixes, his talent for all things electronic becomes apparent. This leads him to be selected for the elite but brutal Hitler Youth School and a special assignment to track the Resistance through their radio transmissions, eventually leading him to St Malo where the stories of Werner and Marie-Laure collide. There is a further sub plot involving the obsessive search by a senior Nazi for the precious gem which superstition implies may turn the fortunes of the war. As he closes in on the stone his search leads him the tall house in St. Malo belonging to Marie –Laure’s uncle. Throughout the book it is clear that eventually the paths of

Werner and Marie-Laure will cross. The author uses short chapters to tell the different strands of the story and this really helps the reader to keep track of what’s going on. I found it a real page turner, you always want to know what happens next to the various characters and the tension really ramps up as the parallel stories come together in a tense and dramatic climax. n VETS' ADVICE

Don’t eat that, it’s poisonous! Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Natasha Watts RVN Nurse Manager

MOST things that pets eat that they are not meant to will just make them poorly. However, there are a few things which really are poisonous to our pets and the golden rule is, if in doubt, give your veterinary practice a shout! Things that are very toxic to dogs • Chocolate – contains a toxic ingredient called theobromine. Dark chocolate contains the highest level of this substance. Milk chocolate and white chocolate contain lower levels. If you know how much your dog weighs and how much and what type of chocolate they have eaten, your vet will be able to work out whether enough has been eaten to cause a problem. It is worth noting that garden mulches made from cocoa shells contain very high levels of theobromine – so gardeners beware if you have a dog. • Raisins – in mince pies, Christmas

pudding and fruit cake. These are very toxic and can cause kidney failure in some dogs. Not all dogs will be sensitive but unfortunately there is no way of knowing which will be affected. Give your vet practice a call if you are unsure. Less serious • The holly and the ivy! Both these festive plants, often used as decorations, can cause dogs to get poorly if eaten. They can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Similarly mistletoe and peanuts can make your pooch poorly if they eat enough. Things that are very toxic to cats • Lilies – A beautiful and popular flower at Christmas. However make sure they are out of the way of our feline friends who are extremely susceptible to kidney failure from ingestion of any part of this plant. Even licking their fur

having rubbed against the plant can cause a problem. • Paracetamol - We humans may have good reason over the festive season to take the odd painkiller but don’t leave them lying around so your cat can get hold of them. Paracetamol poisoning in cats is invariably fatal. Less serious Peace lilies, Cyclamen and Poinsettia are all very popular Christmas plants but can cause sickness, drooling and depression if eaten. Fortunately the symptoms are self-limiting and the prognosis is excellent. In the unlikely event that your pet does have a Christmas emergency when your surgery is closed, call Highcroft Veterinary Hospital on 01275 832410. We will have vets and nurses on-site 24 hours a day over the festive period, so your pets will be in safe hands if the worst were to happen.

December, 2018

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY AT our November meeting we learned about the Bishops Knoll, World War I Hospital. Professor Chris Stephans led us trough at timeline from when Henry VIII gifted the medieval deer park, part of the Sneyd Park estate, to Sir Ralph Sadler. In 1855 some ‘superior residences’ were built, one being Bishops Knoll; which in 1908 was bought by Robert Edwin Bush, a multi-millionaire who had made his fortune sheep farming in Australia. When WW1 broke out Robert and his wife Marjorie converted the house into a hospital for injured Australian soldiers and ran it at their own expense. By the end of hostilities over 2,000 Australians had been treated there. In recent years the land was acquired by the Woodland Trust and is being restored to its former glory. On December 4 we will hold our American supper, Christmas quiz and AGM. Surely unmissable! The Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www.kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20. Paul Hanmore Secretary
