P..p..p…pick up a Penguin Trail map

Nicola Bartlett has organised a Penguin Train for Hanham High Street with designs by artist Rosie Webb

Scottish baby seal lands in Hanham

BIRD spotting will take on a new meaning in this month with the launch of Hanham’s first penguin trail. Pictures of penguins will be popping up in the windows of shops and buildings along the high street. Nicola Bartlett, who has run the Eclectic Gift Shop in Hanham High Street since 2017, has organised the event to get local children out and about. She said: “Each penguin will be in a window up and down the high street. Some of them might be quite hard to spot: children might need to lean right back and look upwards. “Everyone can collect a free trail map from Eclectic Gift Shop then mark down the number of each penguin they spot. “Once they’ve found them all they can return their form to the shop to get a certificate and a little treat.” She was inspired by the annual scarecrow trail, run by the Friends of Christchurch School in May half term, which also sees lots of residents visiting the high street. The trail takes place from Monday 21 to Friday 25 February, coinciding with the school half-term holiday. All 12 penguin designs are the work of Bristol artist Rosie Webb, whose work is on sale at the gift shop.

Ofsted: Digitech is a Good school DIGITECH Studio School in Warmley has been upgraded to Good by the education watchdog Ofsted. The specialist school for young people aged 14 to 18 is run by the Cabot Learning Federation. It was previously rated as requiring improvement. Principal Lis Jolley said: "I am really pleased that Digitech has been recognised by Ofsted as a Good school. Digitech offers young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire a real alternative to larger schools in terms of the specialist curriculum that it offers. I would like to thank the students, staff, parents, and CLF trust for making Digitech such a happy and unique school." Ofsted’s report said: “Pupils, staff and parents are proud of their unique school. Pupils say differences are not just accepted at Digitech, they are celebrated. Pupils and staff respect one another. Staff know pupils well. Pupils feel safe in school. If they have a concern, they say they can speak with any member of staff. “Pupils know what is expected of them. Teachers give them clear guidance and useful prompts to help them to complete work. However, some pupils do not always need this level of support. Students in the sixth form enjoy learning from experts to develop knowledge and skills for the creative industries. Students talk enthusiastically about their learning.

Digitech principal Lis Jolley “Pupils are encouraged to be active members of the school community. Many pupils have a strong interest in the world around them. Pupils are keen to discuss their views and they feel listened to. While pupils gain experience in their specialist areas, such as art and creative media, they would like more enrichment opportunities to develop interests and talents beyond this.” Cabot Learning Federation executive principal Sally Apps said: “It is great to see Lis and her team recognised by Ofsted for the innovative curriculum and peerless support offered to the young people who choose Digitech. Partnership is a significant strength of the school’s work and the inspectors recognised the truly excellent offer being taken up at Boomsatsuma and the Robins Foundation as well as on site at Tower Road. As a trust we are very proud of the school, of its team, of its partnership work and the dedicated students, parents and governance volunteers.”

£300,000 pavilion for Hanham Common PLANS are under way to demolish and rebuild the sports pavilion on Hanham Common. Hanham Abbots Parish Council has secured more than £300,000 of funding for the project. The work will see the current building, built nearly half a century ago, demolished. It will be replaced with a bigger building that will include storage areas for goal posts and bins, which are currently stored outside or in changing rooms. In addition to changing rooms and showers for two teams, there will be a club room alongside a kitchen with serving hatch. The room could be used as a café by the community. The new building, singlestorey like the existing one, will be decorated outside with a mural by a local artist. It will have a living roof, created with green sedum plants, and use solar energy for its hot water and heating. Outside, spectators will be

protected from the elements by retractable awnings. The existing car park area will be resurfaced and the pedestrian gate moved to a wider part of the pavement. Parish council chair Steve Hicks said plans would be submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for approval, then work could get under way once a builder is found. He said: “We were hoping to get the work done in May

but that seems quite ambitious now, because builders are still struggling to get materials. “Hopefully we’ll get it finished by the end of this summer.” The work was originally proposed in the late 1980s but never carried out. The two football teams that currently use the pavilion and pitch, Old Georgians Reserves and Warwick, will be arriving to matches in their kit while the pavilion is rebuilt.

Mr Hicks said: “The teams came already changed during Covid and they’ve said they’re happy to do that again while the building work takes place. We may put up a portacabin too. “Once the pavilion is finished we will try and get more teams playing there, because it brings in much-needed revenue for the parish council.” The parish council hosted display boards and Q&A sessions about the pavilion last month.

New exhibition KLEENEZE was founded by Harry Crook in Hanham in 1923 and was based there until 2004, when it moved its headquarters to Warmley, before finally moving out of the area. The site of the former Kleeneze factory in Hanham is currently being cleared by Homes England in advance of an extensive redevelopment. Kingswood Heritage Museum has gratefully taken ownership of the iconic Kleeneze sign that adorned the former factory building off Anstey’s Road for decades. This will form the centrepiece of a new exhibition featuring the history of Kleeneze in the local area. The museum is delighted to be able to acquire the sign, and looks forward to welcoming visitors to the new exhibition when the museum reopens in April.

Making a difference to young lives

What is the difference between an independent fostering agency and a Local Authority? Foster carers in the UK can apply to work with either a local authority (LA) or an independent fostering agency (IFA). The choice depends on what feels right for them. Finding good-quality foster parents to look after the rising number of children in care is an ongoing challenge for local authorities. This is particularly the case for older children, siblings, and young people with disabilities, where it can be a little more difficult to find suitable foster homes due to complex needs. Therefore, independent fostering agencies in the UK work hard to recruit, train and support foster parents to be able to care for these young people and provide them with the enjoyable childhood they deserve. The level of support – especially practical - is often higher with an agency than a local authority. Supervising Social Workers in independent fostering agencies have lower caseloads and are therefore able to provide a more therapeutic approach to support foster carers. When initially enquiring about becoming a foster carer, it is important to attend talks or arrange visits from several independent fostering agencies or local authorities. This will allow you to discuss their process for foster carer training and support. The training programme can vary between providers, so be sure to ask lots of questions. Also look at things like statements of purpose and Ofsted reports so you are aware of strengths and areas for improvement. Whichever way is chosen, you will be carrying out a very worthwhile role providing a safe and stable home for children and young adults.

Seal escapes Scottish lockdown – by swimming to Hanham DINERS arriving for a pub Sunday lunch were amazed to discover that a baby seal had beaten them to it. The little seal, nicknamed Neoprene or Nacho, had shimmied up the slipway from the river outside the Old Lock & Weir Inn in Ferry Road. Pub team member John Jefferies said: “I was serving when the head chef, Connor, came in and said there’s a baby seal on the slipway. “I thought it was probably an otter and asked the customers to bear with me while I went out to check. He was sitting on the slipway looking a bit lost. I climbed over the gate and had a good scout about for any sign of his mum, but he was by himself. “We called the RSPCA who said we should encourage him back into the water. He plopped back in and shot off.” But half an hour later,

Neoprene was back. Bolder this time, he slid under the gate and wiggled up to the pub garden. The RSPCA suggested calling the Marine Rescue Service, who arranged to collect him. Mr Jefferies said: “They told us to contain him until they arrived, so I had to quickly become a seal rancher! “We barricaded him in with some barrels of Thatchers cider, hosed down the area to keep it wet and put in some towels. “We didn’t feed him: the only thing we had that might have worked was whitebait and we didn’t know if that was suitable.” The Marine Rescue Service took him to RPSCA West Hatch in Somerset. By scanning his tag, it was discovered he’d last been seen in Scotland in June. Since then he’d lost more than half his weight, so is being fed up, as well as being treated with antibiotics for seal pox.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

The baby seal, variously named Nacho and Neoprene, at the Old Lock & Weir in Hanham An adult seal was spotted in the river outside the pub last year, carrying fish in its mouth, but this is the first time a baby has been tempted up the river. Mr Jefferies said: “Everyone’s been joking that he rebelled against Nicola Sturgeon’s lockdown in Scotland and crossed the border to come down here. I still think he’s been drawn by the Westcountry cider and our Sunday dinners!”

Once Neoprene, AKA Nacho, regains some weight, he’ll either be released back into the wild at Clevedon or cared for at a seal sanctuary. If that happens, staff at the Old Lock & Weir plan to adopt him and sponsor his care. Lucy Cooper from the RSPCA said the seal was on the mend. She said: ““He now weighs 16.4kg, up from the 14kg on his admission. Once he reaches 35kg plus, he will be released.”

Raise your concerns with the click of a mouse AN ONLINE map will allow people to alert their parish council to areas of concern at the click of a computer mouse. Residents of Longwell Green, Cadbury Heath, Barrs Court, Mount Hill and Willsbridge can click on the online map to lodge an opinion. For example, the first comment received is about the need for lighting at the sports court in Corfe Place, Willsbridge. Residents can see the concerns raised by other people, and click on an “Agree” button if they share the same opinion. The OPEN Community Hub has been devised by Oldland parish council to give people an easier way to have their say about the things that are important to them.

Over the next year the project will expand to help connect people with other organisations and allow people to be involved with council decision making. Steve Skidmore, Parish Development Specialist, said: “Collecting initial views at this first stage is an important part of the process. “We are particularly keen to hear about community facilities, health and wellbeing, education, skills and training, public transport and active travel, and climate change. “You are most welcome to comment or raise any issue. Themes and other issues will be explored as the project evolves.” The map can been seen at opencommunityhubmap. commonplace.is

Volunteer labour will bear fruit A COMMUNITY orchard has been planted next to Longwell Green’s leisure centre. Volunteers from Kingswood Climate Action Group braved the winter weather to plant eight apple trees next to the car park. Still to be planted are some pear trees. The area was sown with wild flower seeds to bring added colour this spring. The trees are a mix of eating and cider apples, and were supplied by Lodge Farm Trees, which specialises in heritage and rare varieties. Once the trees bear fruit in a few years’ time, residents will be able to sample Jackets & Waistcoats, Blenheim Orange and Laxton Superb. Another tree produces Arlingham Schoolboys apples, a variety which has been saved from near extinction. Ashmeads Kernal is also being grown, which is a Gloucester variety dating back as far as 1700. Cllr Jon Gadsen from Siston

Parish Council and Kingswood Climate Action Group said: “The orchard is an example of how we can support nature on our doorsteps and also grow food locally, rather than buying apples which have been imported from abroad. “We’re looking forward to harvesting the first fruits, though we may to have to wait a couple of years!” Around 75% of the region’s orchards have been lost in the last 50 years, according to Gloucestershire Orchard Trust. As well as feeding people, orchards provide a haven for wildlife including bees, butterflies, birds and bats. Sally Pattison, biodiversity officer for South Gloucestershire Council, which paid for the trees, said: “It’s great to work with the community on a project that delivers food as well as increasing tree cover and providing habitat for wildlife and pollinators.”

Nic gives frank account of cancer journey A DAD who has inoperable cancer has written a book to help others live with the disease. Nic Collins was first diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma in 2015, after noticing blood in his urine one day at work and deciding to get himself checked out. He had his right kidney removed around two months later, and was given a ten-year remission period. But in 2019 cancer was detected again, this time in lymph nodes in his chest. The following year, cancerous cells were discovered in his pancreas and he had part of it removed. Now Nic has cancer in his left lung, chest wall and abdomen, and is taking targeted therapy tablets, which succeeded in shrinking the cancers. He is sharing what he has learned from nearly seven years of living with the disease in a book, To Be Frank: One man's journey through cancer, which has been published in paperback and as an ebook. Nic, who lives in Barrs Court,

The cover of Nic's book

Nic Collins with daughter India, wife Michelle and daughter Erin at the book launch initially started to write down this thoughts and experiences with a view to producing a leaflet that could be printed and left in hospitals, to help other people who had just had a cancer diagnosis. He said that when he was first given the news he was handed forms and a photocopied leaflet about hospice care, which "scared the living daylights out of me". Nic said: "If I'd had some of the information I now have, it would have made the first few weeks a lot more bearable. "I thought writing a leaflet would mean people would know not to be quite so scared of it and know what's coming next." But once he had written more than 41,000 words on what he has learned and how life

has changed for himself, wife Michelle and daughters India, 21, and Erin, 17, Nic had a book on his hands. He said: "The book is not so much about my ongoing treatment but my acceptance of it and how I've been lucky enough to have my immediate family on the journey." Aged 48 when he was diagnosed, Nic is now 55 and reconciled to that fact that there is no cure for his condition. He said: "Chasing it around with operations isn't doing any good. "I have good days and bad days. "I've always kept a positive slant and never got caught up with doom and gloom." The book's title is a tribute to Nic's dad, Frank, who died less

than eight months after being diagnosed with cancer, at the age of 69, having not told anyone about the early warning signs he had seen. Nic said: "Had my father not been in that position, I would've probably ignored it when I first found something wrong. "If I hadn't reacted when I did, I wouldn't be here now – there were no other symptoms. "Knowing what happened to my dad has given me more life, to a great degree." Nic, who works as a car salesman but is currently on statutory sick pay, said that as well as giving people who are diagnosed with cancer an idea of what might have in front of them, he also wanted to share the emotions they could expect to go through. Michelle said the book dealt with the emotions of events including the "horrific" experience of Nic being in intensive care following his pancreas surgery alone, as the first wave of Covid-19 hit the NHS. She said: "Nic is very frank and honest. Women tend to go away and talk about what they're experiencing and share it – men don't, they tend to hold on to it and don't necessarily think about the emotions." Nic officially launched the book with a reception at the Kendleshire golf club on January 9. It is available in paperback and on Kindle via Amazon, and £1 from every copy sold goes to Cancer Research UK.

Tesco jumps the gun as new store isn’t yet built TESCO was told to withdraw a request to add a cashpoint to one of its stores – because the shop hasn’t been built yet. Plans for a new convenience store next to the King William IV pub in Warmley have yet to be approved by South Gloucestershire Council. However, Tesco had described the store on its planning application as an “existing” one until council planners advised them otherwise. Plans for a shop by the pub, known as the King Billy, have attracted more than 200 objections from members of the public. Concerns include an increase in traffic, impact on other local shops and noise and parking issues created by deliveries. Warmley Tower Post Office, housed inside the Costcutter convenience store opposite the proposed Tesco, has already

closed since the plans were submitted. Its website states this is a temporary closure. The King Billy, known for its live music events, is included in the Local List of heritage buildings for South Gloucestershire and appears on maps as far back as 1841. The new 4009 sq ft store

would generate three full-time and 14 part-time jobs and be open from 6am to 11pm, seven days a week. The shop would cover the current parking area for the pub, with a new 16-space car park for the pub included alongside eight parking spaces for the shop. Planning applicant Cordage Estates Limited, which is working for the pub’s owner Punch Taverns Ltd, has submitted revised plans following concerns raised about its original plans submitted last July. These include a promise to use smaller delivery vehicles for the shop. However, the council’s urban design team, which opposed the original plans, said: “Looking at the previously submitted site plan and the latest plan, it seems the overall area has stayed the

same (or at least very close.) “The change has been to slightly shift the building line away from the road on the eastern edge, and to rotate the footprint slightly clockwise. ]“This actually brings the building close to the pub, which I can’t see is a positive.” Some residents have hired planning experts, including Nash Partnership and LRJ Planning, to prepare official objections to the proposals. However, not everyone is against the proposals. Resident Helen Ainger said: “The shops that are in the local area are quite expensive and have limited produce on offer so I think it would be of benefit to the local area to have a wider choice in terms of services, prices and items.” Rhiannon Kitchen said: “The King Billy pub regularly hosts events that cause noise pollution. I have video recordings of karaoke events going on until 11.30pm. “These weekly events disrupt my six-month-old child and my own sleep, even with double glazing. “I do not believe the pub adds anything remotely good to the area. I am in support of a new convenience store in its place.” South Gloucestershire Council has not yet set a date for the plans to be considered by its planning committee.

MP backs call for free parking A PETITION calling for free parking at Kings Chase shopping centre has been launched by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore. South Gloucestershire Council has a policy of keeping parking free in town-centre car parks. However, despite the shopping centre being bought by the council last summer, shoppers are still charged to park there. It costs up to £5 to park in the 350-space car park, depending on length of stay. Mr Skidmore has met business owners at the shopping centre to launch the petition. It would bring the car park in line with other local car parks in Cecil Road and Bank Road. Chris Ford, owner of Raymarsh Ford Chartered Accountants, said: “Free parking at Kings Chase would be a real help to my clients and to all visitors to the high street, boosting accessibility for all those who want to shop and visit here . I’m glad that the council are considering this move, which will encourage footfall on our high street and further help to support local businesses and traders.” Mr Skidmore said: “This is important in encouraging people to shop locally. It boosts local traders and avoids out-of-town shopping. It’s right that, now that the shopping centre has moved into council ownership, free parking is introduced here."

n COMMUNITY NEWS

A new era begins LONGWELL GREEN PROBUS CLUB FOLLOWING our move as reported last month, Longwell Green Probus men's club held our first meeting at our new base at Warmley Community Centre on January 5. Given that several members were isolating or worried about Covid the attendance was somewhat lower than normal at 27 but we nevertheless had a lively and interesting meeting with several suggestions for our 2022 programme followed by a fascinating talk on local hat manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries, something which came as a complete revelation to most of us. Following our report last month we had an encouraging response of four enquiries about membership but we still need several more so, if you or anyone you know are recently retired or approaching retirement, please contact one of our friendly members, Mike, on 07817094147 or email our vice president, Neil at neilmattock@btinternet.com and, if you include your phone number, he will be happy to call you back and give you more details.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Bringing public transport together I FINISHED my last Voice column welcoming the new more frequent half-hourly train services between Temple Meads and Severn Beach. Transport issues continue to dominate my New Year work for you, too. January 15 was ‘National Pothole Day’ and I know the huge frustrations people have about this issue. The statistics show they cost West of England motorists over a million pounds a year in repairs, and for cyclists they can be very dangerous. So I’m pleased to be allocating up to £125 million to help local councils across our region repair potholes over the next five years. Last year I was deeply proud to secure for the West of England the biggest per head investment in transport from the government in the country – over half a billion pounds. In 2022 we will see the first of that £540m invested, with an initial focus on buses. I am also creating West of England Sustainable Transport, which will gradually bring togeth-

er buses, trains, e-scooters and other new public transport under one umbrella. The aim is to give you and your family and friends more reliable, affordable, greener and safe ways to travel – especially for the 23% of local people without access to a car. In time, you will be able to travel from A to B much more seamlessly as different types of transport become integrated. We will begin by improving some existing routes, and as more money becomes available, expand to new places. Sadly, such improvements are complex, so won’t happen overnight, and we will need to make big choices together, but I’m truly excited about what this significant sum of money can do to improve our local travel. Just as the classic ‘roundel’ design is iconic in London, our transport network needs a great logo too. I want the design to be inspired by you – West of England residents and passengers. So

Metro Mayor

I’m running a competition open to all to help influence that logo. Entries are open until Friday February 12. Then the designs and ideas of local people will be finalised by professional designers who are working on the whole transport brand. I’m really excited to see what you come up with. I’m keen to see a design that is from the people, and for the people. Please join in by visiting www.westofengland-ca.gov.uk/logo-competition for more details. Our region is amazing. Together let’s make it the very best it can be.

n WHAT'S ON

n ANTIQUES

Use the Force ...

DEALING with large collections are part and parcel of an auctioneer’s job. But every now and then, an extraordinary one comes along – and that’s exactly what happened back in June 2021. I had a phone call from a gentleman who said he had a ‘large collection of Star Wars items,’ so I made an appointment and off I went. Most home visits take between fifteen and thirty minutes to undertake. This one took me three hours. The collection comprised more than a hundred vintage Star Wars figures – worth a fortune in themselves, and normally worthy of an article on their own – but what was really different about this collection was the vast amount of autographs the owner had obtained. At a rough estimate, there were over eight thousand. I sat in the gentleman’s front room as I was handed folder after folder, after folder. He had spent his entire life going to conventions, various personal appearances and even sometimes befriending the star and spending an afternoon with them. The collection had everyone in it – from the big names of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill right down to the makeup artists and camera operators. It was a lifetime's’work, and a collection of which I have never seen the like and doubt I will ever see again. At the time of writing, we’re around a week away from the auction happening. The pre-sale estimate for the collection is a whopping £65,000-£90,000 and we expect it to exceed this. The collection has been featured in all the national newspapers, and we were even interviewed by Fox News in America, we’ve had bidders from all over the world sign up to bid – it’s a bit of a whirlwind. It just goes to show the power of a good collection. Had there only been a few items, no attention would have been paid, but when we can get our teeth into something special, then it becomes special. Millie, 10, designs Metro Mayor's greeting A GIRL from Hanham had the excitement of knowing her Christmas card was on display in homes across the UK – including at 10 Downing Street. Millie Cokely Crawford, 10, created the picture chosen by Metro Mayor Dan Norris for the front of his Christmas card. Her design, featuring a reindeer looking up at a Christmas pudding, was selected from thousands of entries from primary schools across the region. Mr Norris sent a card to the Prime Minister, as well as organisations and businesses in the West of England and beyond. Millie found out she’d won when Mr Norris attended a performance of songs and poetry at her school, Hanham Abbots junior school. She was congratulated in front of the school and presented with an art box to further inspire her creativity.

Millie Cokely Crawford receives her prize from Dan Norris Millie said she was nervous about standing up in front of the school to meet the Mayor, but is proud that she won. She said: “I’m really surprised and shocked that I won and my card went to the Prime Minister.“I came up with the

design by starting with a shape then deciding it looked like a Christmas pudding. No one else in the class was drawing reindeer so I decided to add one to be creative. “I like drawing and art at school. The art box was a good

prize. “It has pastels, watercolours, oil paints and pencils in it. I’ve already tried out the pencils drawing cartoon figures and they blend really well. Millie’s mother, Sarah Jane Cokely, was in the audience when Millie received her prize and joined her for a photo with the Mayor. She said: “I’m very proud of her and it’s given her a real confidence boost.” Mr Norris said: “Millie’s entry particularly stood out for me. What a cracker! What talented youngsters we have in the West of England. Their drawings are amazing. With all the amazing entries, my office looked like a winter wonderland." Another local youngster was one of the runners up in the competition. Ilina, seven, attends Courtney primary in Kingswood. Her design was printed inside the Christmas card.

Mr Bishop got in touch with Wahoo, who agreed to donate a reconditioned Kickr unit to Mr Wilks. He then turned up at the end of the walk to present the Kickr to Mr Wilks as a surprise. He said: “Seeing someone who’s so fit, doesn’t smoke or drink, and an ex-rugby player, makes you realise this could happen to anyone.” Mr Wilks has a Facebook page, Spokes After Strokes, about his rehabilitation journey. How to have a better sleep A QUIZ: Einstein was ten, Churchill, Napoleon and Newton all four, Shakespeare and Van Gogh – so little; it was even a problem. If I mention Mrs Thatcher was a four, is that a give it away? Indefatigability was viewed as a measure of the mental stamina and dedication of Prime Ministers in time past. Now we even have details of work setup and social arrangements to pore over. The NHS reports that a third of UK adults – particularly the older population and children – experience problems sleeping. Occasional episodes of insomnia – lack of sleep – may come and go without causing any serious problems, but it can last for months or even years at a time for some people. Regular poor sleep puts people at risk of mental and physical health conditions such as depression, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Some simple lifestyle changes can make a world of difference to your sleep quality.

The NHS suggests some simple tips for a more restful night. 1) Keep regular sleep hours Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day will programme your body to sleep better. 2) Create a restful environment Reduce electronic use before bedtime, avoiding using devices in the bedroom. Making sure the bedroom is cool, dark and quiet can improve the quality of sleep. 3) Make sure your bed is comfy It's difficult to get restful sleep on a mattress that's too soft or too hard or a bed that's too small=. Get a =supportive bed. 4) Exercise regularly Moderate exercise regularly, such as swimming or walking, can help relieve some of the tension built up over the day. Avoid vigorous exercise, such as running or the gym, too close to bedtime, as it may keep you awake. 5) Cut down on caffeine Cut down on the caffeine in tea,

coffee, energy drinks or colas, especially in the evening. C Instead, have a warm, milky drink or herbal tea. 6) Full, hungry or thirsty? Too much food, especially late at night, can interrupt your sleep pattern. Conversely, being hungry or thirsty at night can increase the chances of waking up. 7) Do not smoke Nicotine is a stimulant. People who smoke take longer to fall asleep, wake up more frequently, and often have disrupted sleep. 8) Try to relax before bed Have a warm bath, listen to quiet music, or do gentle yoga. Your GP may be able to recommend a helpful relaxation CD. Avoid watching the clock when you find yourself awake at night, increasing anxiety levels, further preventing you from sleeping. 9) Write away your worries If you tend to lie in bed thinking about everything you must do tomorrow, set aside time before

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA bedtime to make plans for the next day. 10) If you cannot sleep, get up If you cannot sleep, do not lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing until you feel sleepy again, then go back to bed. The Ellacombe Pharmacy can help with self-care measures to help with sleep difficulty. If you or a child regularly find it difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep, please speak with a GP.

Rovers treat for young twins

Cricket resumes

TWINS from Hanham had the time of their lives when they were invited to wave flags on the Bristol Rovers pitch as the players walked out. Gracie and Elsie Smith, age eight, had the honour when Rovers played Hartlepool. They were able to witness their team’s 2-0 victory in the final minutes of the game. Both girls play with Downend Flyers and the whole team was invited for a match-day experience. This included a training session with Bristol Rovers’ community coaches at Lockleaze sports centre before heading to the Memorial Stadium for a tour. They were able to see inside the dressing rooms then greet the players as they arrived. The twins, who attend Christ Church Hanham primary school, moved to play with Downend Flyers after training sessions at Warmley Rangers clashed with other activities.

CARSONS and Mangotsfield Cricket Club have resumed pre-season training. The 2022 season will begin on April 23, and the club has arranged a number of pre-season fixtures. Indoor net sessions for seniors have been moved away from Mangotsfield School, as the nets were unable to cope with the number of players attending. Junior coaching nights will continue to run at Mangotsfield School, where sessions will take place for age groups from the under 9’s to under 15’s. If you are interested in playing cricket, either at senior or junior level, whether boys or girls, ring 07746 112998 or email iancoles7@sky.com.

Gracie and Elsie at the Rovers ground and with team-mates on the pitch Their father, Ben, said he’d watched their big moment from the stands along with the girls’ grandparents, who are Rovers season ticket holders. He said: “It was a really great day out for them and they were really happy with the score,

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Help with rising living costs I AM all too aware of the rising cost of living that is a result of the world economy waking up from almost two years of disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. This is now very much impacting on local household budgets and so I wanted to make readers aware of the help and support that’s out there during these difficult times. It should be reassuring to know there is a range of support options for anyone struggling with financial pressures. The National Living Wage will be increasing from the 1st April to £9.50, an increase of 6.6%. South Gloucestershire Council offers grants, welfare support and reduction schemes to help you. You can visit www.southglos.gov. uk/financial-support-for-residents for more information on benefits, council tax reduction, NHS Test

and Trace support payment, food support, as well as what to do if you are unable to pay your rent or mortgage. For example there is both the Community Resilience Fund (CRF) and Housing Support Fund (HSF). The CRF can help if your income or outgoings have been impacted by coronavirus and there is emergency and long term financial support available through this fund. The HSF is to support people who are struggling to buy food, pay energy and water bills or cover other essential costs. This does not have to be Covid-19 related. The council also has support available for families in school holidays, including food vouchers. The council’s main general enquiries telephone number is 01454 868009. To book an appointment to talk with one of

their One Stop Shop advisors you can email: OSSAppointment@ southglos.gov.uk On energy costs, I would recommend contacting South Gloucestershire Council’s Warm and Well service. Warm and Well is managed on behalf of the local councils by the charity Severn Wye Energy Agency. Their FREE energy advice line is available Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm and the number is 0800 500 3076. You can also email: warmandwell@ severnwye.org.uk or visit: www. warmandwell.co.uk The service offers free energy efficiency advice, free home energy advice visits, insulation and heating grants, health related grants and renewable energy information. They can help you save energy in your home, reduce your fuel bills, switch energy supplier and find local installers & tradespeople.
