By-election after MP quits over green issues

ALL eyes are on Kingswood this month as voters go to the polls in a Parliamentary by-election following the resignation of Chris Skidmore. But while national commentators will be looking at what the result on February 15 might mean for a general election later in the year, discussion locally centres on the possibility of hundreds of homes being built in the constituency, many of them on sites in the Green Belt. Six candidates are contesting the seat, which Mr Skidmore has represented for the Conservatives since 2010. The winner will be our MP for just a few months. More details: Pages 3-6

'Suspicious death' of man, 54, in Longwell Green

Emergency: 999

POLICE say enquiries into the suspicious death of a man in Longwell Green are continuing. Mark Torrington, 54, was found dead at a property on Bath Road on Sunday, January 14. A 73-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder the same day and has since been released on conditional bail. A force spokesman said: “Mark had been reported as a missing person on Friday and officers were searching for him when we received a call about his death. “A forensic postmortem examination has taken place but the findings were inconclusive. Further tests will now be carried out to try and determine how Mark died and whether there was any third-party involvement. “Sadly, it’s believed Mark died at least several days before the call was made to police

Why I had to quit as MP, by Chris Skidmore CHRIS Skidmore had already announced he would retire at the general election but his decision to go early took the political world by surprise. The former Kingswood MP made his announcement on January 5, shortly after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Insisted that his "working assumption" was that the election would not be before the autumn, Mr Skidmore resigned. Mr Skidmore, who last year headed a Government review into how the UK could reach Net Zero by 2050, said he could no longer support an administration that was introducing legislation to allow "increased production of new fossil fuels in the North Sea". He said: "As the former Energy Minister who signed the UK's Net Zero commitment by 2050 into law, I cannot vote for a bill that clearly promotes the production of new oil and gas." Mr Skidmore said that with a global transition away from fossil fuels and the "exponential growth" of renewable power, there was "no case to be made for increasing fossil fuel production at a time when investment should be made elsewhere, in the industries and businesses of the future, and not of the past".

He warned that "the future will judge harshly" anyone who voted to allow new oil and gas licences. He said: "I can also no longer condone nor continue to support a Government that is committed to a course of action that I know is wrong and will cause future harm. "To fail to act, rather than merely speak out, is to tolerate a status quo that cannot be sustained."

®

Mr Skidmore, who won the Kingswood seat from Labour's Roger Berry in 2010 and increased his party's majority at subsequent elections, said he was "especially grateful" to his constituents for placing their trust in him for 14 years. "To my excellent staff, local councillors and association members, to colleagues and friends I apologise if you feel I have let you down and only hope that in time you can all understand why I have taken the decision I have today. "I will not however apologise for doing what I know to be the right thing, both environmentally and economically, both for our country and the planet." Responding to Mr Skidmore's comments, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said he was "wrong" on the issue of oil and gas. In an interview with the BBC, Mr Hunt said: "It is very sad to lose a respected colleague like Chris Skidmore. "But I do profoundly disagree with the reasons that he gave for resigning. Mr Hunt said recent attacks on shipping in the Red Sea showed that "it is very important for energy security that we have domestic sources of that kind of energy". Battle for Kingsdwod: Pages 4 & 5

Facts and figures THE Kingswood constituency was created in 1974 and has been held by the Conservatives since 2010, when Chris Skidmore won the seat from Labour's Roger Berry. Mr Skidmore's majority at the last general election was 11,220 over Labour's Nicola Bowden-Jones. The Tories received 56% of votes cast in 2019, with Labour getting 33%. The Lib Dems were a distant third, with 6.9%, and the Greens fourth with 2.4%. The only other candidate, standing under an animal welfare banner, received 1% of the votes. The Kingswood constituency will be abolished at the general election, after a boundary review. Mr Skidmore had already said he would retire from Parliament at the election. The South Gloucestershire electoral wards of New Cheltenham, Kingswood and Woodstock will become part of the new Bristol North East seat, while other wards in the district will become part of another new seat, North East Somerset & Hanham. Emersons Green will go into Filton & Bradley Stoke. Two of the candidates for Kingswood, Damien Egan, Labour, and Lorraine Francis, Green, have been selected to contest Bristol North East at the general election. Labour is in the process of selecting its candidate to fight former Cabinet Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg in North East Somerset & Hanham. The contenders so far are James Coldwell, Becky Montacute and the West of England Metro Mayor and former MP Dan Norris. A decision is expected in the coming weeks. Polling in the by-election on February 15 is from 7am-10pm. Those voting in person must bring a form of photo ID.

Battle for Kingswood SIX candidates will contest the Kingswood by-election called after Chris Skidmore resigned as MP. Whoever wins the seat, held by Mr Skidmore for the Tories since 2010, will be MP for a matter of months. At the general election later this year, the Kingswood constituency will be abolished as new boundaries are brought in. The six contenders are: Sam Bromiley (Conservative); Andrew Brown (Liberal Democrat); Damien Egan (Labour); Lorraine Francis (Green Party); Rupert Lowe (Reform UK); and Nicholas Wood (UKIP). Sam Bromiley, who is defending a Tory majority of 11,000, is a councillor for Parkwall & Warmley and the leader of his party’s group on South Gloucestershire Council to defend the seat. He works for the support organisation the Helplines Partnership

He said: "I am committed to serving our local area, by growing our local economy, protecting our green spaces, and giving people the tools and the choice to work hard and achieve. "This area has always been my home and I want to deliver for my community by bringing more investment, supporting our small businesses, and protecting our green spaces.” Labour’s Damien Egan was selected last year to stand at the general election for the new Bristol North East seat, which will replace part of the Kingswood constituency - as its by-election candidate. Damien, 40, grew up in the area, attending Our Lady of Lourdes primary school and Hanham High School. He was elected to Lewisham Council in 2010, becoming directly-elected mayor of the London borough in 2018, a post he has now resigned. Damien said: "I’m looking

forward to being able to go around the areas I grew up in, and give residents a hardworking representative who’s on their side. "Speaking to residents in Kingswood today, it’s clear that, just like the former MP, people are fed up of this government, and ready for change.” Mr Skidmore, who led the Net Zero review for the Government, resigned over its continuing support for new oil and gas licences and said he would not support any political party at elections. Lorraine Francis, the Green

Party’s choice, is a social worker jn Kingswood. She represents Eastville on Bristol City Council and has been chosen to fight Bristol North East at the general election. The Greens said: The party said: "Residents of Kingswood have the opportunity to elect an MP who will fight to save our green spaces, for today and for future generations. As Kingswood’s former MP argued in his resignation letter, we are facing a climate emergency and the time to act is now." Andrew Brown, for the Lib Dems, works in financial services

and is a Bristol city councillor. He said: “Our local NHS services have been neglected by Conservative ministers, hardworking families have been left to suffer the repercussions of the cost of living crisis with little help and our local waterways are being damaged. “I am delighted that voters in Kingswood are finally being given the opportunity to send a message to Rishi Sunak and choose an MP that deeply cares about this community.” Reform UK, the successor to the Brexit Party, initially branded the by-election a a

“grotesque abuse of taxpayers’ cash”. Its candidate is the party’s business spokesman and former Southampton FC chairman. Rupert Lowe has promised that if elected, his “entire net MP salary will be donated to local Kingswood charities.” The UKIP candidate Dr Nicholas Wood, 48, is principal lecturer of chemistry and pharmacology at Kingston University in Surrey. He said in his campaign material that he wanted to become an MP so UKIP could “retake control:” of the UK by leaving the EU.

n NEWS SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has extended the deadline for people to have their say on its Local Plan, which could see thousands of new homes built on the Green Belt. The latest phase of consultations on the blueprint for development between 2025 and 2040, is now staying open for comment until February 16. The council says it needs to find sites for 9,260 new homes, at least 7,813 of which will need to be built on greenfield sites. It has to create a Local Plan for the next 15 years, otherwise developers will be seeking to build on sites all across the district. The council’s ‘emerging preferred strategy’, which it says is a compromise between the Green Belt and the need for new housing near existing urban areas, proposes allowing 1,480 new homes to be built on fields east of the Avon Ring Road around Shortwood and Warmley Development is also proposed at three sites in Hanham: Land at Castle Farm Road, 125 homes; Land south of Abbots Road, 85

More time to have say on Green Belt housing homes; Land at Castle Farm Inn, 60 homes, Other potential development sites include Barry Road in Oldland Common, Jarretts Garden Centre in Willsbridge, and The Sawmills in Bridgeyate. The 'east fringe' of Bristol is favoured by the council for housing because of its employment and transport links. Earlier schemes to build in the north of the district appear to be being shelved because these would need major improvements to the M5 junction at Falfield. The council has held a series of drop-in meetings across the district during January to give people more information about what is proposed. A group set up to oppose the plans to build on Green Belt sites, Save Our Green Spaces South Gloucestershire, has set

up a petition on the council’s website, which can be found at tinyurl.com/2p8fs6ef. It has held its own meetings about the proposals, as have several parish councils and a group opposing speculative plans for housing developments at The Batch in Hanham. All the groups encourage people to take part in the council's consultation, even though it's complicated. Some are holding sessions to help residents formulate their responses. A spokesperson for the Save our Green Spaces group said: “We are not NIMBYs opposed to any development. We support organic growth, but not mass development of housing and industry across the Green Belt.” The group has built a following of more than 700

February, 2024 people via a Facebook page where information is shared, including details of upcoming council consultation meetings, and is planning to hold its own open meetings in future. The group is calling on people living in the Kingswood parliamentary constituency to vote for candidates opposing the Local Plan at the upcoming byelection on February 15. A spokesperson said: “In view of this being such a unique by-election, so close to the next general election which will see the Kingswood constituency disappear, it would be great if this election could act more as a Local Plan referendum, leaving the party politics to the general election. “We will encourage people to vote for any candidate opposed to this Local Plan.” Full details of the Local Plan can be found online at www. southglos.gov.uk/newlocalplan, where people can fill in a consultation survey. Anyone who is not online can call the council on 01454 868009 for help.

Cossham Hospital scanner will cut wait times A NEW £1.5 million scanner to help speed up diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients has been bought thanks to volunteers. Members and supporters of the charity BUST have put money from more than 10 years of "tireless fundraising" towards buying the scanner, which is housed at Cossham Hospital. It will cut waiting times for women who need MRI scans for breast and gynaecological cancer, and men who need prostate scans. The advanced Siemens MAGNETOM Vida 3T MRI scanner, among the first of its kind in the country, will also be used for monitoring patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, other outpatient scans and breast cancer imaging research. It adds to the scanning capacity of the Bristol Breast Care Centre, which is based at Southmead Hospital and performs more than 700 scans

Simon Cawthorn, Maria Kane and Bristol Lord-Lieutenant Peaches Golding with BUST volunteers at Cossham Hospital

every year. The money to buy and maintain the scanner for ten years was donated by BUST (Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust), a volunteer-run charity which has raised more than £3 million over the past 30 years, to buy hi-tech equipment the unit couldn't otherwise afford. BUST founder and trustee Simon Cawthorn, a retired breast

surgeon, said: “This new MRI scanner has taken more than ten years of tireless fundraising of all kinds – from individual and corporate donations to runs, raffles and cake sales. "Breast cancer patients and their families have been especially generous in enabling future patients to benefit from the best possible technology.” North Bristol NHS Trust chief

executive Maria Kane said: "We are extremely grateful to BUST for this incredible gift, which will benefit everyone who lives within our catchment area, especially people who now or in the future develop breast, prostate, or gynaecological cancers." The scanner was officially opened on January 9 by LordLieutenant of Bristol Peaches Golding.

Shops centre meat van allowed to stay BUTCHERS have won permission to sell meat from their van outside Kings Chase shopping centre in Kingswood following a swell of public support. South Gloucestershire councillors granted a street trading licence for Mark and Steve’s Mobile Butchers at its new site next to Iceland despite an objection from the local authority’s StreetCare team on the grounds of public safety and nuisance. The owners had intended to withdraw their application and find another location on the assumption it would be refused but the licensing subcommittee hearing went ahead in their absence. The panel approved the permit to trade from 8am to 3pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after hearing 20 public statements of support had been received since the

formal consultation period closed, following a story by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. An officer in the StreetCare team objected, saying cleaners could not get their sweeper machine around the van at its spot in Regent Street. A customer told the meeting on Monday, January 8, that there were no other butchers in Kingswood and that the van was an asset to the area because it sold meat that was difficult to find in supermarkets, such as goat and offal. Councillors added a condition to the application by Steve Godwin, officially trading as SG Mobile Butchers, to remove any rubbish and sweep the immediate area around the van at the end of each trading day. Lorry crash victim will be 'hugely missed' THE family of a 20-year-old man who died when a lorry overturned on the Avon Ring Road say his death "has left a massive hole in everyone's heart". Tyler Carley, who lived in Thornbury, was a passenger in a scaffolding lorry which overturned on the A4174 near Mangotsfield on the evening of December 5. He died at the scene of the crash. Tyler's family say he will be "hugely missed". In a tribute released through Avon & Somerset police, they said: "Sadly, our whole world got turned upside down on December 5 when we lost our beautiful boy Tyler. He was only just 20 and had so many plans in life still, and loads of festivals booked. "Tyler loved going out with his friends and enjoyed playing and watching football. "He loved his holidays with friends and family, and had a big one planned for his 21st and mum Gemma's 40th birthday. "He went to work that morning fully intending to come home, and had texted his mum just 45 minutes before the accident. "Tyler will always be hugely missed by his mum Gemma, dad Mark, brother Kylan, sisters Skye and Ronnie-Irene, step-dad Matt, step-mum Tracey and all of his family and friends.

"His death has left a massive hole in everyone's heart." The 37-year-old driver of the lorry was treated in hospital for minor injuries before being arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody. He was then released under investigation while further enquiries take place. Police say no other vehicles are believed

to have been involved in the incident. Anyone with information who has yet to come forward is being asked to call the police on 101 and give the incident reference number 5223 297 300. A fundraising campaign in Tyler's memory to help pay the costs of his funeral raised more than £8,900. More than 640 friends and well-wishers donated towards the Gofundme campaign.

How to succeed in making positive changes in 2024 DID you know that the second Friday in January is statistically shown to be “Quitters Day”? By this day for a majority of people, those good new year resolutions that got us dusting our running shoes, on a new diet plan (more greens!), wheeling out our bikes and powering up the treadmill have all fizzed and flattened out.

your wins, no matter how small.

So are things not going as well as you imagined? Please don't despair, and give up! Here are some proven tips on how to succeed.

Behavioural Science also shows that we place too much emphasis on willpower as a key driver for positive changes regarding our physical wellbeing and diet. The wrong ideas about willpower drive us to work to unrealistic timescales/goals for adopting new behavioural patterns and habits. Take diet changes; every time we exercise self-control, we build willpower.

The most significant factor for success is enjoyment. Research proves that immediate rewards from new habits help us stick to them. It is a big step in the right direction for you. Celebrate all

Focus on developing good habits rather than just meeting set goals. Count steps and keep increasing them. Drink more water and aim to eat at least five portions of fruits. Don't just be focused on counting calories and the bathroom scale dial.

Saying no to feasting on threats, especially when no one is watching, makes it easier for you next time. It is a big win! Keep things fun and achievable. Self-criticism is linked to less motivation and poorer self-control. Be supportive of yourself and others. You are a unique individual, find your preference, whether it's doing activities in the morning, being part of a group, or using gadgets to support you. Choose your own way to success. The positive link between physical and mental wellbeing is now better understood. We also know that for many of us, the challenges we face with mental health may mean we struggle

Planting to save the planet AN organisation set up to help communities achieve environmental change is encouraging people to get outside and get involved. One Planet Matters is holding a series of events at community orchards in south Gloucestershire during February and March, including in Hanham and Kingswood. The organisation is a nonprofit community interest company, set up three years ago to help creating environmental and social change. It is instrumental in setting up and supporting local community groups who plant and then maintain community orchards, helping to improve local biodiversity. The projects link with parish and town councils' local nature action plans and South Gloucestershire Council's target of ensuring that every resident lives within 15 minutes' walk of a community orchard. Kevin Thomas said: "The Community Orchard Programme brings people together, providing outside healthy activities which benefit not only the individual but also the wider community and of course the environment." So far schemes supported by One Planet Matters have planted 1,350 fruit trees and 2,000 wildflower plugs. The organisation has also set up the Growing Communities Network, bringing together community growing schemes, allotment holders and orchards via an app to distribute produce to community food clubs, kitchens, and fridges as well as food banks. A three-week trial last year distributed 325kg of fresh fruit and 175 portions of fresh produce: this year the network will be supporting charity Family Action's food clubs, and is inviting growers with surplus fruit and veg to join up. One Planet Matters has also created a schools network to help

Path closure CYCLISTS and pedestrians are being warned that a busy section of the Bristol & Bath Railway Path will have to close this year. South Gloucestershire Council has published a closure order for the stretch of path between Station Road, near the Staple Hill tunnel, and the old Mangotsfield Station, for up to a month between now and July. A council spokesperson said the closure was necessary to rebuild a section of retaining wall that runs along the edge of the path to the east of the footbridge at Charnhill Crescent. The spokesperson added: "We are in the process of appointing a specialist contractor and although we don’t have a start date for the work at this stage, we hope to begin at some point in the coming months." The council is also considering wider improvements to the path.

create school orchards, setting up growing spaces helping develop the biodiversity of school grounds, as well as providing support for the curriculum and activities via a biodiversity and growing awards scheme. So far 18 schools and around 920 pupils have got involved. In February One Planet Matters is organising community activity days at several sites in south Gloucestershire, including orchard maintenance, planting and habitat development. The Hanham event is on February 18 at BS15 3PJ, behind Hanham Health, and will be the first step towards creating a community orchard and wellbeing garden. The activity day in Court Road, Kingswood is on February 26. Both are from 10am to 3pm. The organisation is encouraging anyone who lives in one of the areas mentioned and wants to get involved to email info@oneplanetmatters.com or call 07378 323380.

Future of Green belt to be decided by byelection The result won’t change the Government – but it could change the future of our area. Can't buy me love ... FOR this month’s column I want to take you on a journey back in time. Picture the scene - the Rolling Stones have just released their new album, The Beatles have just released another chart-topping song, and a certain time-travelling alien in a blue police box is about to land on our TV screens for the first time. Am I talking about 1965? No - I’m referring to just a few months ago! November to be exact! And it was also back in November that we made a very special discovery – this rare early signed photograph of The Beatles. In the early 1960s a young fan from Bristol desperately wanted a piece of memorabilia from the ‘fab four.’ Luckily for that young fan, a friend of the family happened to be one John Wall who was the Managing Director of EMI Records. After begging their father to ask Wall for the band’s autographs, he finally relented and passed on the message. A few weeks later a signed photograph arrived in the post signed by all four members. Being the fan’s prized possession, it was immediately placed in a cabinet for safe keeping and only looked at for special occasions. Flash forward to November last year and that fan – now a fully grown adult – rediscovered the photograph and brought it along to our saleroom for auction. Signed Beatles photographs are always special, and always command several thousands of pounds at auction. There are only a handful of authentically signed photographs known to exist, most signatures from the time featuring on scraps of paper or in autograph books. They are rare. We placed the signed photograph in our January auction with an estimate of £4,000 to £6,000 which is the usual ‘going rate’ for such an item. However, given that The Beatles’ new song ‘Now And Then,’ had reached Number One in the UK Singles Chart just a few weeks prior, there was a global renewed interest in the band once again. Which is why it ended up selling to a private collector for an eye-watering £13,000! A house record for a piece of Beatles memorabilia. Now that is a price to twist and shout about! HANHAM EVENING W1 COULD this be the fittest WI Branch in the area – well, probably not but members gained some first-hand experience of what it is like to “workout” using the Chinese art of Tai Chi. The timing of this was very appropriate giving members the opportunity to work off the excesses of Christmas celebrations and the branch Christmas meal which was a particularly pleasing affair. It was prepared for us by local caterer Ivys and held at their premises in Whittocks Road. It proved to be excellent value for money and served in a pleasant ambience with all the Christmas trimmings. The Tai Chi instructor was a member of the u3a, formerly University of the Third Age, who explained that it is an art well known for its slow intentional movements used as a form of gentle exercise. It is popular with the more senior members of society and in hospitals, clinics and community centres providing many health benefits, Our speaker also explained how the U3A is organised and the benefits of joining. Membership is inexpensive and the work which is undertaken by the organisation is carried out on a voluntary basis. VenusFlyer2022

Members have access to numerous courses where they can learn a variety of skills. There are are also events that members can attend either in person or via zoom and are often free of charge. Members are also encouraged to set up their own groups to help or educate other likeminded or interested members. We first became aware of the u3a when they took a table at our annual Autumn Fayre which generated quite a bit of interest and consequently were invited to give a talk to the branch. They hope to be at our Fayre again later this year. Following the talk, we held a “Speed-chat” – a popular ice-breaker - where members, especially the newer ones, can meet, chat and get to know other members in a short space of time. At the end of the evening, we distributed our Branch programme showing our forthcoming events and this year members can look forward to talks about the Canary Girls, a Victorian Gardener, Holiday Ideas, a visit to Saltford Brass Mill Museum and a fun game of Ten Pin Bowling. Another packed year for members to enjoy. Dianna Coles

n BOWLS GB BRITTON BOWLS CLUB Changes are in the air for GB Britton Bowls Club as the new season approaches. The highly successful Kingswood based club will be starting off the new season in style playing in their new club shirts. Designed by club members and paid for through member donations the shirts feature flashes of yellow, green and maroon on a white background. Every member has been given a shirt which will be worn for all club games. In another change the club is moving away from the traditional white or grey skirts/trousers and will be wearing the colour black below the waist for all games. But these are not the only changes that have taken place. Last year this progressive club’s management team agreed a programme of improvements that they wanted to see carried out. They were conscious of the expense and set about raising funds to cover the costs. This was achieved through fund raising schemes, raffles, donations and sponsorship and the club is particularly indebted to their new

sponsors Willow Chiropractic, Holbrook Roofing and Ascott Maintenance Services. The club is now looking forward to the benefits these improvements will bring and is eagerly anticipating the new season. The club has installed a new automatic watering system which has removed the time-consuming and arduous work of the watering the green manually, a task endured by members over many seasons.

New fencing to the side of the rink has been erected and members have also seen an improvement in playing conditions following a change of greenkeeper. Technology has played its part as well with an upgrade to the website, the introduction of free W Fi and a card payment system. One further major piece of work is soon to commence when the club will see a long-overdue complete refurbishment of the

toilet facilities. The club, which is situated just off Ingleside Road, Kingswood, has the benefit of a large clubhouse which overlooks the professionally maintained green. Club members and visitors also have access to ample free parking in the club car park. The club boasts a six-rink green, changing rooms, a pavilion, complete with a competitively priced lounge bar, kitchen, and short mat bowls during winter months. Club Chairman Alistair Binnie said “I am proud to be Chairman of this club and am pleased to help in taking it forward. The club has always aimed to provide a welcoming environment for people of all ages to experience and enjoy a game of bowls and these improvements will only enhance that experience. Whether you are a regular bowler, a beginner or just want to enjoy the social side this club has something for everyone. So, if you would like to join us just get in touch through our website” Peter Coles

n BOWLS

FRY'S BOWLING CLUB THE main bowling season may have finished, but that hasn't slowed Fry's Bowling Club down. Following several club members attending a Defibrillator training course hosted by B&NES but presented by Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) in early August, the club decided to pursue the possibility of holding a further training session at our club. This was eventually secured for late October. Invitations were sent to fellow bowlers from Fear Indoor Short Mat plus Henleaze Bowling Club, who had recently purchased a Defibrillator so were in need of training. With the club situated next to Fry's Ladies Netball courts, several of their members also attended. Such was the demand for the training it was decided to move the venue from Fry's club house to a larger room at the Somerdale Pavilion. Two one-hour sessions were delivered. Following this successful event, Frys have chosen GWAAC as their nominated charity for the forthcoming year. In September, the club hosted a successful race night. In late October, the club hosted a 90th birthday party for John Naish. An excellent cake capturing John in action was provided by Pete and Mary Buck with the buffet courtesy of Carol Grenfell. November saw the club's short mat installed in the clubhouse. This has proved popular with five sessions during the week, with a mix of those familiar with the short mat version and first timers. Christmas saw our annual coffee and mince pies morning and the first weekend of the new year saw a Beetle Drive and American Supper. The winter has been busy for our maintenance team, with work on the green to improve the playing surface, along with a new patio area outside the clubhouse, courtesy of a grant from Keynsham Town Council. The club's winter activities continue through to April when Fry's will be ready for the upcoming outdoor season.

KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB IT was a busy time at Keynsham Bowling Club in the lead-up to Christmas. Firstly we held our Christmas party, when more than 60 members welcomed back musical duo the Two of Clubs, who entertained us with sounds from the 60s and 70s. They have already been booked for Christmas 2024. Festive food was provided by three of our ladies, Jan Isles, Pam Rose and Gill Hiscock, to round off a great evening. A few days later, a similar number gathered in the clubhouse for a new venture - a morning of carols, mince pies and hot toddy. One of our members, John Carne, introduced the carols, along with a few seasonal jokes, whilst we were accompanied by a guest, Owen Cole, playing his keyboard. We welcomed representatives from two charities for the cheque presentations. Each year our two captains nominate a good cause to support. Ladies’ captain Lynne Pearce chose Brain Tumour Support in memory of much-loved member Ed Crockford, while men’s captain

Carm Riccio picked Guide Dogs UK. Carm was unwell and unable to attend, so his place was taken by his successor as men’s captain, Steve Coles. Our photograph shows, from left to right, Steve, Julie, a Guide Dogs’ puppy raiser and also a bowler at the club, Lynne, and Jayne Mallard, from Brain Tumour Support. Keeping her eye on events is 13-month-old guide dog Delsie. During the year, the club raised £500 for each charity, and Steve, as chair of the Western Power Benevolent Society, had an extra £2,000 to top up the donations. This meant each charity received £1,500.

Tesco appeal victory The FIEND TESCO has won its battle for a convenience store next to the King William IV pub in Warmley. A planning inspector has upheld an appeal against South Gloucestershire Council’s refusal of the scheme for the site on the corner of Tower Road South and Cadbury Heath Road. The plans for the Tesco Express involve demolishing the porch and single-storey extension to the pub and porch and building a shop to the side, with a new access off Tower Road South to a reconfigured car park serving both the King Billy and a new store. Councillors rejected the plans, which had provoked scores of objections, a year ago. They said the proposed delivery bay in front of the pub, close to a pedestrian crossing, would be likely to increase road dangers. But a planning inspector has given the go-ahead, saying the submitted evidence showed how safety concerns over the delivery bay would be addressed. Evidence also demonstrated that the proposal would not harm the ongoing viability of the pub. The inspector stipulated that hours of working during construction should be restricted to Monday to Friday 7.30am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm with no working on Sundays or bank holidays. No deliveries shall be taken at or despatched from the site outside the hours of 6am and 11pm on Monday to Saturday and 8am to 9pm on Sundays and bank holidays. The original plans said the store would be open from 6am to 11pm seven days a week and would create three full-time and 14 part-time jobs.

New season, new exhibitions

Kingswood Heritage Museum closed for it’s annual winter break on Sunday 26th November, and will reopen for the new season on Saturday 30th March. The railways in our area will be featured in two new exhibitions: A presentation of photographs of the railways in Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, Warmley and Bitton In April only, an exhibition – “On and off the Rails” – telling the story of railways across South Gloucestershire. The photograph (right), courtesy of the Brian Haynes collection, shows Warmley Station (looking south) in its heyday.

Volunteer opportunities

Kingswood Heritage Museum always welcomes new volunteers. The Museum would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone interested in helping with marketing or in managing or helping to run our café. If you are interested in helping the Museum in any capacity, please either: email us at kingswoodmuseum@gmail.com or call us on 0117 960 5664. ECHO POND Echo pond forms part of William Champion’s gardens in Warmley. The semi-circular pond was mentioned by Sir Joseph Banks in a written account of his visit to the gardens in 1767, and was once fed by water from the leat which ran the whole length of the Champion estate. It may have served as an overflow for the water system as well as providing a fish pond for William Champion's house, now known as Warmley House. Despite several attempts to restore the pond it has become partly overgrown, but the echo may still be heard from immediately in front of the pond facing the back wall. The photograph (above) was taken in early January this year and shows the pond very full as a result of the heavy rainfall.
