Stranger danger warning to pupils after driver approaches boy PARENTS are being encouraged to talk to their children about stranger danger after an attempted abduction in Hanham. A pupil was walking towards Hanham Abbots Junior School by the Blue Bowl pub on the morning of January 24 when he was approached by a woman in a car. It is believed she offered him a lift. The boy ran off to the school in Abbots Avenue to report the incident to an adult.

Police were seen outside and around the school at home time and again the following morning. A text was sent to parents from the school which said: "Please be aware a boy from HAJ has been approached and offered a lift in a car by a stranger this morning. Parent informed and police contacted. Class teachers will talk to all children today to remind them of the importance of not going with anyone they do no know well."

Headteacher Matthew Norcott told Hanham and Longwell Green Voice that some older pupils walk to school on their own in preparation for secondary school. He said: "We are obviously concerned that something like this has alleged to have happened very close to the school. Our paramount concern is the safety of children. "We informed all parents and Turn to Page 12

People's Postcode Lotte NEIGHBOURS in Longwell Green had more reason than most to celebrate on New Year's Eve. For the five Court Farm Road residents ended 2018 on a high after winning £30,000 each. They scooped a total of £150,000 when BS30 9AE was announced as a Street Prize winner in the People's Postcode Lottery. Winner Hazel Price, who has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, said it was a dream come true: "I've been shouting 'come to Bristol' every time I see the Postcode Lottery advert on telly so when I got the call from the team asking if they could come to visit me, I thought all my prayers had been answered! I've never had this kind of money in my life before so I just can't believe it. "I've worked since I was 15 and it's only recently that I've

been able to retire after spending 28 years working as a post woman. I've always made sure the family are taken care of but I'm going to spoil myself with this. It means that I'll be able to really enjoy my retirement now so this win is definitely for me and my husband Andrew. I'm just ecstatic!" Self-employed builder Andy Smith was joined by his wife Jenny when he received his cheque. He said: "I'm in disbelief – I thought my friends who I play golf with were pranking me. My daughter signed me up to play as a birthday present a few years ago, so I'll definitely need to say a big thank you to her. It's very nice to be going into the new year with an extra £30,000 in the bank." Andy and Jenny are planning to put some of the windfall towards a dream holiday for the family. Jenny said: "We've

The charity, whose nurses provide at-home support to local terminally ill children and their families, raised more than £1,000 at the show weekend, and has now received an additional £2,500 from organisers. Julian Withers, head of fundraising and communications

at Jessie May, said: "The whole Jessie May team – including a brilliant group of volunteers – had a fantastic time at last year’s show. We were delighted to be the show’s chosen charity and spent two gloriously sunny days meeting supporters, sharing some amazing stories about our nurses’ work, and raising

vital funds to ensure they can continue to support local families. Events like these make a huge difference to our charity and we are hugely grateful to the South Gloucestershire Show for the opportunity." The charity, whose specialist nurses are currently supporting 136 children with life limiting

February, 2019 conditions, continues to be supported by the South Gloucestershire Show as their nominated charity for 2019. Show organisers have also pledged to support Jessie May through their May event, the South Glos Food & Drink Festival, on May 18 and 19 at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. Nicholas Wanderers win loyal support A FOOTBALL team who have played at Dundridge Park for 70 years have gained some new supporters in the shape of Bristol city councillors who are backing the club to renew their lease on the football pitches in the park. St George and Troopers Hill councillor Fabian Breckels and cabinet member councillor Kye Dudd, who is responsible for encouraging sport in the city, say they hope to secure the long-term future for Nicholas Wanderers. The club have been maintaining the pitches and work closely with the Friends of Dundridge Park to keep the park a green oasis for everyone. One ambition is to make the clubhouse more attractive for away team visitors but substantial work needs to be carried out. At the moment a number of buildings have been joined together with temporary brickwork and temporary roofing.

Back row: Cllr Kye Dudd and Cllr Fabian Breckels Front row from Nicholas Wanderers: team member Ashley Scrase, chair John Scrase and secretary Bob Fudge Cllr Breckels said: "The club currently maintain the pitches in the park and they have fixed up

the clubhouse in a make-do-andmend way for decades now. It’s time they got long-term backing

and a secure future so they can bid for funding from the Football Association and other grantmaking bodies." Club secretary Bob Fudge said: "Over the years we have won several league titles and cup finals and we’re having a good season just now. But with time running out on our lease and licensing agreements we need to look to the future." Cllr Dudd, cabinet member for sport, added: "External funders backing sports initiatives need to know that the clubs they fund will be around for a long period to make the investment worthwhile. The Nicholas Wanderers team have a good and long track record. They continually bring on the next generation of local footballers. It’s impressive and we value that at the council. Now we’re working on the detail of agreements which I hope will sustain them for the next 25 years."

Think you're a good driver? DRIVERS can have their skills behind the wheel assessed during free taster sessions in Longwell Green. Volunteers from Bristol Advanced Motorists will join you in your own vehicle and give you useful feedback on your driving and an informative presentation on advanced driving with IAM RoadSmart, which is part of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Sessions are aimed at making you feel more confident behind the wheel and helping you enjoy a smoother, safer ride. Tips can also help you save money on fuel and servicing costs. Sara Waterhouse, from the organisation, said: "There are more vehicles every day on the road but most drivers never take any further training or have their skills assessed. Road safety professionals and the police recommend that we can all benefit from a check-up once in a while and here is a perfect opportunity." It takes place on Saturday March 2 from 10am-2pm at Scout HQ, Longwell Green Community Centre, Shellards Road, Bristol, BS30 9DU. Pre-booking is advised as places are limited. SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has been accused of dragging its heels after delaying a decision on whether to grant landlord's permission to AEK Boco Football Club. The Greenbank Road club wants to build two spectator stands, put up eight 15m high floodlights and a 1.8m fence around the main pitch. Without these new facilities, the club cannot play higher league football. The council, which owns the land, had originally intended to decide on landlord's permission for Boco to apply for planning permission following a consultation with locals last autumn. Now the authority has decided to allow the club to proceed and will make a ruling once a planning decision is reached. The consultation report concluded that there is a "great

deal of support" for the club's contribution to the community, especially in terms of positive activities for young people. It also acknowledged concerns from residents which include noise, anti-social behaviour, increased traffic, light pollution from floodlights and reduced public access. Previous plans to extend facilities at the ground several years ago were withdrawn following opposition. Resident Kim Madan said: "I am disappointed at the length of time it took them to decide not to make a decision! "They focus very heavily on the benefit to youngsters but in my view due to the supposed restrictions they have promised on use of the floodlights, only the elite adult team will benefit. It's a huge amount of money to fund the proposed facilities and at this time when the schools are struggling for cash. Surely this

ng kicked further down the road' money could be better used for all children as opposed to those interested in football. With the Bellway homes development there will be a whole new community to consider and along with environmental issues there are a lot of issues to be addressed. It seems as landlords South Glos are nervous of making a clear decision." Tyler Close resident Steve Ashlin said: "The feedback I get is people here are fed up after three years of constantly being asked the same thing when they have on numerous occasions given an unequivocal rejection of the proposed plans for the Greenbank site. Many people here find this whole saga very stressful and are worried about the future." A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: "We are aware AEK Boco have decided to submit a planning application to make proposed

changes to Greenbank Playing Field. Should they receive planning permission, AEK Boco will still need to seek landlord’s permission to carry out development of the site. “We feel it is important for the issues raised during the public consultation to be properly addressed alongside the findings of the associated Equalities Impact Assessment and Analysis (EqIAA) and this is why we wish to see the planning process followed prior to making a decision as landlord." Not everyone who lives nearby is against the club's ambitions. Resident Lindsay Pascoe said: "The club have improved the field as a whole better drainage, better changing facilities and community use of the clubhouse. My children’s pre-school used it free of charge when Christchurch Hall was out of action. "If the club are to keep many

of the young players after they finish children’s football, the club needs to provide the facilities needed to progress through the leagues. Otherwise as has happened to numerous local football and cricket clubs, the young players are lost to a higher standard, drop out of sport all together and in some cases take a wrong path in life. "The use of the field will not be compromised by the developments as it is only on the area around the main pitch. People can still use the remainder of the field just as they can now." "The residents of the area around Greenbank need to take a good long look in the mirror and think about the reasons they are protesting about this development of Greenbank. Would they prefer another 100 houses on the field? Where would they walk their dogs then?"

Out of this world!

THE first masterclass at IKB Academy gave invited Year 11 students from other schools the chance to investigate the world of particle physics. IKB’s principal Debbie Gibbs, a passionate physics teacher, led the day, which included a series of activities and presentations, culminating in the group making a cloud chamber to see the tracks made by cosmic rays. Mrs Gibbs said: “Although the tracks were quite elusive, the students enjoyed the opportunity to see how inspiring A-level physics can be.” Participants’ comments included: “ It was lots of fun and I enjoyed the dry ice”; “It was relaxed and fun and I also learnt interesting stuff”. IKB, which has a science and engineering specialism, is holding a series of masterclasses on Saturday mornings to showcase its range of A-level and Btec Post-16 options, in which students are achieving great success. Classes are planned in maths, engineering and biochemistry to enable young people to find out more about these subjects at a higher level.

A nursery class has celebrated its first birthday by throwing a party for their fantastic families. ‘Litte Stars’, the successful nursery class at St Barnabas Primary in Warmley, has now been open for a year, and is providing the community with high quality, affordable childcare for children aged 2- 4 years old. New chapter as Open Access comes to library at last HANHAM Library is closed until mid February to prepare for the new Open Access swipe card system. The closure will take place from Monday January 28 to Sunday February 17 and will reopen at 10am on Monday February 18. The Open Access system has been introduced in many libraries throughout South Gloucestershire and enables registered users to access the library outside of staff hours, in many cases seven days a week. The system has taken longer to install in Hanham because of issues regarding complying with fire safety regulations in regard to emergency exits at the High Street building. But councillors voted unanimously to press ahead with the scheme at a meeting in November when they agreed to place an internal grille across the children's section to comply with

regulations. As part of the changes, some children’s book shelving will be moved to the main library to enable access to children’s books whenever the library is open. The grille option meant the council would not need to reclaim land leased to Baker Street Nursery and Preschool next door in order to create an

additional fire escape. The temporary closure will enable extended opening hours from March. The nearest libraries for people to visit whilst Hanham is out of action are at Kingswood, which is staffed Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 5.30pm and Saturday from 9.30am - 1pm and Cadbury

Staff from Hanham Library have apologised to users for any inconvenience caused during the three week closure. In order to use the Open Access scheme existing library users will need to enhance their Active Leisure and Library membership by attending an induction which can be arranged by visiting the library. The session will last from 20-30 minutes and will include information on how to use the door access panel with your membership card, how the library closes at the end of a session and what warnings to expect and what to do in an emergency.

Stranger danger warning to pupils under pressure decisions that this child did." A police spokesman said: "We received a report of a suspicious incident in the Whittucks Road area of Hanham, South Gloucestershire. "A woman spoke with a young boy from within a black car before opening the vehicle’s door. The boy then ran off. "She is described as white, aged in her late 20s or early 30s with black shoulder-length hair. "We’re reviewing CCTV from the area and continue to carry out enquiries into the incident. Officers are also conducting high visibility patrols in the area to provide reassurance to the community. We always encourage vigilance and awareness of personal safety and stranger danger in schools and among young people."

"I personally went round to all classrooms to deliver the message about not going with strangers and praising the response of the child involved who immediately brought himself to a place where there were adults that he trusted and told them exactly what happened. "We will deliver road safety and stranger danger messages in school and our message to parents is that they also arm their children with information about what to do so that, in the highly unlikely event something like this happens again, they are able to make the same sensible,

Memorial benches are a fitting tribute THREE new benches have been put in place at Hanham's Memorial Garden as a tribute to those who have lost their lives in conflict. Hanham Parish Council provided the ironwork benches which replace two plain wooden ones which had seen better days. The seats all face towards the war memorial at the garden in the front of Hanham Community Centre. Each bench is black, with two featuring red poppies and the other a white dove. The first bench is known as the World War One bench and does not depict dates, making it relevant for soldiers serving, and those who have fallen, in today's world. The second is the World War Two bench and depicts images of the British Army, Royal Navy and RAF. The third is the Armed Forces bench and incorporates images of armed forces personnel, a war horse, nurse, ambulance and red poppies. Chairman of Hanham Parish Council, councillor June Bamford, said one of the existing benches was recently vandalised and it was decided it was more cost effective to replace the them as they were both reaching the end of their life. She said: "We thought it would be a fitting tribute to provide three new war memorial bench seats for the Memorial Garden in Hanham to commemorate all loss of life in all conflicts."

n PHARMACY BLOG

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

Our 10-year plan for your wellbeing THE Ellacombe pharmacy team want 2019 to be the healthiest year for you, your family and all your loved ones. How? By providing the bestpersonalised healthcare service available through our pharmacy because that is what you deserve. The NHS recently launched its long term plan, setting out what it wants to do for healthcare over the next ten years and showing how funds will be used to achieve to do this. Three things stand out for us : 1. None of our patients can wait ten years for things to get better. 2. We must continue to champion and protect the most vulnerable in our community, just as we did by continuing to provide free home deliveries for all patients especially the elderly and housebound when the government cut our NHS funding. Our patients mean everything to us so absorbing

the cost was the right thing to do. 3. The best pharmacy ideas in the plan replicate things we are already doing here! We are promoting healthy living through support to give up smoking, alcohol consumption reduction, weight loss, tackling loneliness and social isolation, working to provide practical help over the winter months with free home insulation referral and help to reduce energy bills, working and supporting local partnerships to make our community healthier and more inclusive. NHS Flu jabs, blood pressure checks and mental health education and support. We now see that the NHS ambitions match ours and even proud that the national examples cited showcase work by little independent pharmacies like Ellacombe pharmacy. So we want to invite you to

Ofsted praises CLF Post 16

Stinging message

CABOT Learning Federation is celebrating after its Post 16 provision was rated Good in all areas by the education watchdog Ofsted. Inspectors judged the sixth form as part of their visit to John Cabot Academy in Kingswood in November, when they also rated the school as a whole as Good. They said: “Post 16 is a strength of the school. It successfully caters for a large number of students with a range of abilities and from diverse backgrounds. Leaders and teachers ensure that students are well supported, make good progress and go on to positive education or training destinations.” Kath Cooper, Head of CLF Post 16, which is based at JCA and Bristol Brunel Academy, said, “I am delighted with the outcome from the recent Ofsted visit. This is a true representation of the journey Post 16 has been on over the last three years. I am thrilled to be recognised as an inclusive and purposeful Post 16 that continues to provide excellent care and strong guidance for all students.”

STUDENTS at John Cabot Academy have been getting creative to highlight the issues caused by non-reusable plastics. The group of 25 students, from across all age groups, made a jellyfish out of recycled materials and hung it from the atrium at the school. The eco-friendly project was constructed during the students' enrichment programme, prompted by studying plastics in the world’s oceans. The jellyfish took two terms to construct during their 50 minute lessons. During this time the group also led a campaign to highlight environmental issues to other students. Emma Dennehy, textiles and food technician said: "I think it is really important to enrich students’ education about our fragile ecosystem alongside traditional educational subjects and to give them an understating of the damage plastic can have on their local and national environment. Selected Artists Headaches blamed on Selected Artists Selected Artists diesel spill in river A DIESEL spillage in the River Avon near Hanham and Keynsham left residents complaining of headaches. The Environment Agency has been investigating the cause of the pollution following the incident on January 22. The river took days to recover with the diesel being washed back and forth with the high tides. People living opposite the Chequers pub at Hanham Mills raised the alarm after getting headaches and feeling sick. Sightings of dead fish floating past were also reported. The Environment Agency said the source of the leak was from a small tributary brook located to the south of the main river and that a small boom had been installed to prevent further leaks. A spokesman said: "The Environment Agency has been on

site investigating the suspected source of an oil pollution in the Hanham and Conham area of Bristol. "The Environment Agency has installed an absorbent boom in a small watercourse which feeds the River Avon, and the operator whom we suspect of causing this incident has been very cooperative and are installing their own remediation equipment. "We hope that this will mitigate further impact to the River Avon and will continue to monitor the situation. We will be considering appropriate enforcement action in response to this pollution. n NEWS A HAIR salon in Kingswood is leading the fight against female hair loss, transforming the lives of clients. Charisma, on the Kingsway, set up a hair loss clinic four months ago. Following the fitting of their integrated hair mesh systems, clients are leaving with a newfound confidence, delighted with their dramatic make-over. The hair loss clinic is based on the first floor of the salon allowing customers who may feel

How new locks can unlock a embarrassed or upset by their hair loss complete privacy. The intricate work is carried out by Emily Gil, who originally honed her skills at Charisma as a Saturday girl under the leadership of salon owner Becky Rendell. After qualifying as a stylist, Emily wanted to explore aspects of the business so went to work for a national hair loss clinic. She missed the staff and after several years decided she wanted to return to Charisma. Emily said: "I just wanted to come back as I loved the salon and loved working with Becky but I wanted to continue to work with clients with hair loss. I just wanted to make it more affordable for people. "Becky and I met up a few times and we started planning the clinic. It took about a year and a half to plan but now we're up and running and it's going really well."

Emily, 27, has seen clients of all ages with very different conditions causing hair loss or thinning. Her eldest client was in her late eighties but her youngest client was just nine years old. She had hair loss due to treatment for leukaemia. "It was very emotional," says Emily, who lives in St George. "I had a lady who came in before having chemotherapy and I was with her through her whole treatment journey. I've seen alopecia, female pattern baldness and trichotillomania, which is where someone pulls their own hair out. "There are a lot of women suffering and I can understand they might feel embarrassed but we are here to offer support. People are putting their trust in me so I make sure I listen to what they want and take care of them. I want to help every client who walks through my door." Potential clients are given a

one-to-one consultation where Emily talks them through her integrated mesh system which is attached to your scalp, with bonds made with your own hair in order to individually attach 100 per cent human hair extensions. "We have a chat and find out about their condition which is causing the hair loss and how long they've had it for. I do tests on the hair and see if it's growing back. We also discuss what they would like to achieve in terms of thickness and length. I encourage clients to bring in photos of the sort of hair and style they would like to achieve. "If they are happy to proceed we match up hair colours and make a first appointment." The system means clients can have their hair any thickness, length or colour they desire, with the added bonus that their scalp can breathe under the mesh, enabling their own hair to grow

new you back, should their condition allow it to. Clients can treat the hair as their own and can wash, blowdry, straighten and curl it. Emily said: "It's life-changing. You can tell that because you see how much confidence a person gains after having the system. They can be very timid and worried when they first come in but by the end of it you can see them glowing with confidence. We recently had a lady who came in with general thinning. She was very shy and apprehensive about what was going to happen but by the end, she was crying with joy - she just loved how she looked. She called me that evening and told me I had literally changed her life." One of her clients is Kingswood resident, 55-year-old Debbie Bush. She had been going to Charisma for years for cuts but, with ever thinning locks, was intrigued by the salon's

Debbie has always wanted long, thick hair integrated mesh system. "I have really thin hair which runs in my family. I've done loads of things to it - I've dyed it, bleached it and have gone through stress and the menopause so it all took its toll on my hair. I've always wanted long, thick hair but have never been able to grow it past a certain length. "I was nervous but excited

but I would say it's well worth it as it makes me feel so good." Clients need to return every six to eight weeks to have the system tightened as it becomes slightly looser once their own hair starts growing underneath. Once every six months the system is completely taken off, their hair and scalp washed and any repairs are carried out before the hair is connected back to the mesh. The system should last between two and two and a half years, depending on how it is looked after. Emily said she loves her work and is delighted to be back. "I always wanted to end up back at Charisma but I didn't know what I wanted to specialise in. It was only when I got into hair loss solutions that I knew what I wanted to do. "You build friendships and personal relationships with clients as you go on a journey with them. "The best feeling in the world is watching their emotion at the end. It's priceless and it's what makes my job worthwhile."

and I couldn't believe the result - it looked so natural! It's given me a lot more confidence. I now bother with myself more and wear make up because I've got nice hair to show off. "I wasn't embarrassed by my thin hair but it was hard work. I had to wash and blow-dry it every morning just for it to look ok, but now it's just once a week. "It was a considered purchase

Third community cafe opens its doors A WOMAN who has made it her mission to tackle loneliness says she is delighted to have launched her third community cafe. Gillian Flower, famed for her work in setting up Bristol Community Friendship Club, came up with the idea of opening a cafe once a week where people could meet up, take part in different activities and make new friends. Along with the help of her daughter, Michelle Ford, she launched her first cafe in Longwell Green last September and her second in Speedwell the following month. Her third cafe now takes place at Kingswood Community Centre, opposite the former Linden Hotel, every Thursday from 12-3pm. Visitors can pop along and buy a cuppa and a cake or sandwich meal deal and try their hand at craft activities. There is a 50p table where bric-a-brac bargains can be snapped up as well as music, games and a tombola. There is also an area for young parents and their children where they can meet up with other mums and dads. There is no pressure to take part in activities, visitors can just sit around and chat to new-found friends. Gillian, who lives in St George, and Michelle spread the word by handing out leaflets in Kings Chase shopping centre the day before the first Kingswood cafe launched on January 17. When 80 people stepped

Gillian and Michelle are pictured with their army of volunteers at the first Kingswood Community Cafe through the door she was staggered - and delighted. Gillian makes sure either herself or another volunteer is on hand to greet people as they come in as she knows it can be a big step for some people. Gillian said: "I didn’t wake up one morning and think I will spend every minute of every day and evening ending loneliness. I’ve been there and used to feel very lonely and disconnected from the community I live in and, at some time in our lives, we will all feel lonely. It maybe the death of someone you love or retirement. Young mums tell me they go to their local shop

to talk to another adult human being. Loneliness is nothing to be ashamed of. It is what you do about it that counts." Michelle, who lives in Hanham, is currently applying to get the community cafes registered as a charity. Running costs are funded by donations of clothing and household items which Gillian sells on her Facebook page, Bristol Community Cafes. Gillian said: "Anything you can sell at a car boot sale or take to a charity shop, I can take to sell, although not big items - you can't move in my house! All the money raised goes to keeping

the community cafes going and towards opening more." Michelle manages volunteers and is always looking for new people to join her happy team. If you would like to find out more about volunteering or if you have anything to donate for Gill to sell, you can contact her on 0117 902 5779 or email gill. flower@blueyonder.co.uk The cafe in Speedwell takes place every Monday from 112pm at Barton Hill Rugby Club, Duncombe Lane, BS15 1NS. On Fridays the cafe is held at Longwell Green Community Centre, Shellards Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9DU, from 12-3pm.

n NEWS A WOMAN has been found guilty of fly tipping after dumping black bin liners full of rubbish in Longwell Green. Charmaine Whereatt, 36, of Hillside Road, Kingswood, was ordered to pay a total of £752 after pleading guilty to fly-tipping 10 bags of household waste at Court Farm Road in January last year. The court heard that evidence was found within the fly-tipped waste identifying Whereatt and an address in Bourne Close, Kingswood. South Gloucestershire Council officers later spoke to the defendant on the doorstep of this address and she admitted to carrying out the fly-tipping. She was invited to further interviews with council officers but failed to attend. Whereatt was fined £320, with £400 costs and a victim surcharge of £32, totalling £752. Meanwhile, Geoffrey Ferris, 35, of Orchard Close, Yate, was ordered to pay a total of £1,485.09 after being found guilty of fly-tipping in Hackett

Fly-tipper faces £752 bill Lane, near Thornbury, and in Hoovers Lane, near Iron Acton, between March and May last year. He was also guilty of the offence of carrying waste without being a registered carrier. The court heard the two fly-tips, consisting of various household waste, were in rural lanes and evidence was found relating to an address in Cromhall, and one in Yate. Enquiries made by the council's environmental protection team identified the waste had been removed by Ferris as business transactions. When Ferris was interviewed by council officers, he admitted to the two flytipping incidents and that he did not a hold waste carriers licence. Ferris was fined £400 for each fly-tip, £200 for the other offence, plus £485.09 costs, totalling £1,485.09. Both cases were heard at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on December 19.

Rather than directly issuing fly-tipping Fixed Penalty Notices, which is one tool that can be used by local authorities in some circumstances to combat flytipping, South Gloucestershire Council adopts a different approach to tackle the problem. The authority's environmental protection team co-ordinates education and enforcement action, gathering evidence to pursue offenders through the courts. South Gloucestershire

Council’s cabinet member for Communities and Tourism, Cllr Paul Hughes, said: "These are two different examples that again highlight why there is no excuse for this type of behaviour. Fly-tipping is an issue that affects our communities and local environment and this activity will not be tolerated in South Gloucestershire. Waste crime puts the environment at risk and anyone found to be flytipping in South Gloucestershire will be prosecuted. Residents also have a duty of care to ensure that they only give their waste to registered waste carriers. "Statistics show that anyone fly-tipping in South Gloucestershire is five times more likely to be successfully prosecuted than anywhere else in the country and our awardwinning envirocrime team have a 100 per cent record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence."

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP

Investing in the future for us all

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

AS THE local MP and Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, I am very proud our local area is strengthening its role at the forefront of aerospace and advanced engineering. I am delighted to see the Bristol & Bath Science Park in our constituency go from strength to strength, thanks to a major expansion which was announced last month. The planned developments will see the National Composites Centre at the Science Park being expanded to facilitate the ‘Wing of Tomorrow’ programme, in collaboration with leading industry partners such as Airbus, which will ensure faster and cheaper wings manufacturing and assembling. This comes as our local area recently celebrated how funding boost from the Government’s Local Growth Fund has helped South Gloucestershire Council and the University of Bath to purchase our Science Park, securing its long-term future as a world-class centre of excellence for research and development in our region. The recent approval of the Science Park’s extension is also great news for our local community as it will ensure our area will continue to lead the world in future aerospace development. Great local investment plans are also moving forward for Kingswood, and I’m delighted to see almost £500,000 of funding from the Love our High

Will Writing & Estate Planning

Streets initiative has already been released to support Kingswood High Street, named as a priority location for local regeneration plans. I am pleased that £248,000 released from this fund has now been matched with £215,000 of funding from our Conservative-run South Gloucestershire Council. This investment will be used to provide our High Street with a new Green Machine street sweeper, 30 new litter bins, and extra money for street cleaning, responding to local residents’ demands for a tidier and cleaner High Street. I am also delighted to hear about plans to develop a Heritage Lottery Fund submission for investment in our treasured Kingswood Park, as replicating our recent success with the multi-million-pound transformation of Page Park in Staple Hill would lead to a similar transformation of what is a vital and prominent part of the High Street. As your local MP I was also encouraged to hear about the workshop that has been recently held with local businesses and groups to progress plans to improve access to digital skills training for residents, and look forward to funding eventually being released to support Kingswood Tabernacle’s restoration. These improvement and regeneration schemes will help address some of the issues that the community has regularly raised with me as the local MP.

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

hanham&longwellgreenvoice

25

No Dig veg beds yield promising results 'CAN’T think of having an allotment without digging,' said someone; 'digging helps me exercise,' said another. OK, everybody’s entitled to run their allotment how they like; who are we to argue? But about this time last year, some readers may remember we set out to build a rustic compost pen to grow our giant pumpkins on and ultimately for this to provide us with a load of rich composted soil. It was to say the least, a real country-side effort made of old tree branches woven together. About 6ft long, 3ft wide and 3ft high it was lined with cardboard and straw then filled with all manner of green waste for nearly six months. Several pumpkins were produced - the largest took two people to carry it. We saved the seed if anybody would like a few for a small donation to charity, please get in touch and we’ll send you some.

Pumpkins in the rustic bed The area we were using was about thirteen square feet which was covered in grass; it had not been cultivated for at least ten years and our intention all along was to create a large pile of compost from

which we would construct two No Dig beds. The pumpkins were really secondary but they made good use of the scheme of things. Whilst the compost was maturing and pumpkins were growing, the surrounding area was covered in cardboard with a layer of wood chips on top. Come November the bed was looking a bit sad, the plants had gone and though the rustic framework, which was about to be dismantled, was still holding up and the bed of composting matter was by then looking a little depleted, mostly devoured by those little red worms that love this stuff. But bearing in mind back in the early spring this was a complete mixture of peelings from the kitchen, flower stems, green manures, leaves, straw, shredded paper, cardboard, tea bags, coffee grounds - anything we could get our hands on - we now had a beautiful pile of rich, organic compost. Our next step was to divide up the area. There wasn’t too much left of the cardboard and most of the remaining wood chips were used as new paths between our beds. Using 4 inch timber as temporary shuttering, we laid out two beds 4ft wide and about 13ft long. Some two inches of our finished compost was spread over each bed, about level with the wood chip paths. Our timber shuttering was then removed, the result? Two beds ready for planting. We also had several spare barrow loads of compost that were used elsewhere. And as we said earlier,

Open compost heap 30- 40C no effort, no cost. So will we do the same again? The answer is yes, but this time we’re trying even less work by building an open compost heap. It’s an idea perhaps that could be adopted for any overgrown plot where cultivation is not immediately possible. In our case the ground being used is relatively clear so if you have any hardwood shrubs, brambles etc or perennial weeds remove these first. In midDecember we marked out an area about 4ft across by the width of our plot, which is about 13ft. We’ve started to create a heap over this area with green waste using a similar blend of items that we used last time, mixing them all together as we go. Just after the start of this year our heap was accumulating

to approximately 16 inches high and already it was beginning to generate heat, the start of the composting process. When our picture was taken the daytime temperature was just 1 or 2C, the heap varied between 30 and 40C. We’ll keep adding to the pile over the coming months and by June it could be ready to accept pumpkin or courgette plants; we might even try some runner beans. And when everything is harvested and cleared away the worms will have done the work for us and be happy after gorging themselves on our waste again and so will we as we’ll have another load of rich compost too! beaanews@gmail.com www.bristoleastallotments.com 0117 932 5852

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM EVENING WI BLOOD Bikes. It sounds like the title of the latest West End musical but it is the name of a charity and the title of a very interesting talk given by Mark Green at the first branch meeting of 2019. The bikes in question are those used to transport emergency supplies of blood and other medical supplies around South West England and the “bikers” are volunteers who give their time to perform this valuable service. Mark explained how working with the charity offered him the opportunity to expand his interest in motorcycling whilst at the same time doing some voluntary work. Volunteers are used mainly at evening and weekends when the NHS find it difficult to employ staff to undertake the work. This voluntary service developed because it was becoming increasingly expensive to either directly employ staff or use a taxi service which was becoming the norm. He explained how all volunteers have to undergo a rigorous training course. This is because sometimes, particularly in time critical emergencies, the bikers have to travel under blue flashing lights when strict road regulations apply. One of their main jobs is that every evening they have to deliver blood to the Air Ambulance service in case it might be needed in an emergency. But blood is not the only thing they transport. They are often called upon to move drugs and other medical supplies but he told us

the most bizarre job he had to do was when one Bank Holiday weekend a maternity unit ran out of nappies and he had to ride miles around the West Country with boxes of Pampers strapped to the back of bike! HANHAM AFTERNOON WI OUR first meeting of every New Year coincides with the celebration of our birthday! Our committee ensures every member has a glass of lemonade or similar and everyone else brings a sweet or savoury platter to share with others. The afternoon was also an opportunity to discuss our year ahead debating and voting on a variety of resolutions that are carried forward to the forthcoming WI National Conference. We also circulated to members our diary of speakers for our meetings this year, these include bank account security awareness by Nat West, St. Peter’s Hospice – our chosen charity this year and a talk with a police dog handler which should be very interesting to say the least. Our meeting concluded with a quiz and cuppa to finish any remaining desserts from our earlier celebration. Our membership remains active and well supported but as always we extend our invitation to anyone who may be interested to come along and drop-in to meet us, Liz our president will be delighted to welcome you. the second Monday of every month at Hanham Community Centre from 1.30-4pm LONGWELL GREEN WI At our January meeting we learned all about Freewheelers – the Emergency Voluntary Service. Graham Hunter who has been with them for three or four years told us all about it. Many people are under the impression that the motorbikes we see delivering blood are funded by the NHS but in fact they are a voluntary organisation who provide a free out of hours emergency medical courier service to the NHS. They can carry anything from blood to medication, x-rays and frozen breast milk – to name a few. It was an extremely interesting talk and the members ended the evening with more appreciation of the Blood Bikers. In our February meeting we will be hearing about the Happy Handbag organisation which provides bags and toiletry items for ladies who are homeless. Upcoming events include visits to Savill Garden with a boat trip and to Knightshayes and later in the year we will be having a murder mystery evening. Longwell Green WI meet on the third Friday of the month at 7.30 in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 9864782.

Discover the next generation of hip and knee surgery with Mako™ PRECISION surgery for a range of orthopaedic treatments, provided at the only private hospital in Bristol offering Mako assisted hip and knee surgery Spire Bristol Hospital is leading the way in orthopaedic surgery and, working with an extensive team of leading consultants, we have become the private hospital of choice for hip and knee replacements across the region. The robotic arm is a precision tool used by the highly qualified team of surgeons at our Robotics Centre - helping to improve the precision of hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. How Mako works Based on preoperative CT scans, the Mako system generates a 3D model of a patient's knee or hip joint. This model is used by the surgeons to determine how much bone to remove, and where to place the implants that replace diseased sections of these bones. The robotic-arm assisted platform then identifies the

amount of bone to be removed and this is visualised for the surgeon on a screen. This allows increased accuracy and correct placement of the implants. The surgeon is free to remove bone until he reaches the boundaries prescribed during the planning stages. If the surgeon attempts to move outside these boundaries, the saw will turn off. This helps the surgeon minimise the trauma to the hip or knee and preserves healthy tissue. Before surgery It all begins with a CT scan of the joint, which is used to generate a 3D virtual model of a patient’s unique anatomy. This model is loaded into the Mako system software and used to create a personalised preoperative plan. During the procedure In theatre, the surgeon is always in full control, with Mako assisting, based on the preoperative plan. The system also allows the surgeon to make adjustments to the plan during surgery, as required.

• Benefits of Mako robot arm assisted surgery • Quicker recovery times • Less post-operative pain • More accurate placement of implant • How will Mako help you? • 90% patient satisfaction at 5.5 years2 with Mako robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement • Lower post-operative pain from day one • More accurate implant placement than manual partial knee arthroplasty in a randomised control trial • Potential for reduced soft tissue trauma, blood loss, post-operative pain, time to discharge and requirement for post-operative physiotherapy When the surgeon prepares the bone for the implant, Mako guides them within a pre-defined area using real time interoperative feedback and helps prevent moving outside planned boundaries. This enables a high degree of precision and accuracy in placing implants. Research studies have shown that compared to traditional surgery, Mako can perform joint replacement with two to three times greater accuracy.

Following surgery At Spire Bristol, we are passionate about looking after people and returning them to the lifestyle they know and love. After the procedure, the surgeon, nurses and physiotherapists will set goals to get patients back on the move. Our physio team are experts in post-surgical rehabilitation. With access to top level rehabilitation facilities, including a physio gym and studio, the best possible outcomes are enabled.

Cooking up a success AN activist from Fishponds has helped spread an environmental message during the World Cup of the cooking world. Naseem Talukdar, who heads charities Feed the Homeless and Plastic Pollution Awareness and Action Projects, is also part of a campaign group set up to raise awareness of skill shortages in the Asian catering industry. As a member of UK Curry Connect (UKCC), Naseem helped organise a team which took part in a global cooking competition, the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg. Despite UKCC's team being on a tight budget and having to prepare food in their hotel rooms, they scooped seven medals. Naseem's chefs, who were up against competition from more than 100 other teams,

Naseem, far right, with the Curry Connect team won medals in various artistic culinary and pastry categories. But it was their piece called Plastic or Planet, that really impressed judges, who awarded it gold. Naseem, who lives in Glaisdale Road, said: "I’m proud of the team for raising

awareness of the need to tackle plastic pollution and their overall commitment." Naseem, who grew up in Kingswood, where his parents used to run the Rupali Indian restaurant before they retired, volunteered as a team manager Some teams spend hundreds
