'Aren't we worth investing in?' Izzy, 15, hits out over schools cuts A HANHAM schoolgirl has spoken of the devastating impact education cuts are having on her and her friends. Izzy Hempstead, 15, received rapturous applause after she spoke out at a meeting called to discuss what was referred to as a "deepening crisis" in education. Around 60 people attended the meeting at Aek Boco where they heard from a panel about how schools are struggling to make ends meets, with South Gloucestershire schools predicted to be the worst funded in England by 2020. The Hanham Woods Academy student told the meeting: "When I was in Year 7 there was a team of support staff but these posts have been cut with the duties falling onto the heads of house and teaching staff. "It makes it harder to see someone when I am feeling down because the head of house has to deal with over 200 students. This frustrates me because mental health is at an all-time high and pastoral support is at an all-time low." Izzy said admin posts had been cut but because the work

EDUCATION is in the forefront as we start 2019 - with schools in the Hanham area and around the country saying they are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with funding pressures. The issues were highlighted this winter when the BBC Two series School featured Mangotsfield School and other local secondaries. The six programmes brought a huge response from teachers and parents shocked that South Gloucestershire is the lowest funded local authority in the country. It led to a political row, with council leader Toby Savage saying that viewers were naive to take the shows at face value. Special educational needs funding (SEN) is under particular pressure. As the Voice went to print, Education Secretary Damien Hinds offered additional Government funding to help with this, but overall schools budgets are still tight.

n NEWS From Page 1 "Schools tend to have very outdated technology and there isn't money to replace slow computers. This affects our productivity in lessons as we can't get as much done. "As a student I feel teachers work extremely hard and are pushed above and beyond what is expected of them. We are the future generation - aren't we worth investing in?" The Fair Funding For All Schools meeting was called by South Glos teacher and parent Leilah Boyce who said parents are now waking up to the realities of funding cuts, thanks largely to the recent TV programme School. "I have had conversations with parents and they are now saying there's a problem - the programme has really sparked the debate for people," she said. Attendees were given leaflets showing how the income of schools in the area has changed since 2015, with many, including Hanham Woods, Sir Bernard Lovell, Mangotsfield, John Cabot and King's Oak secondary schools, down by hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Bleak The picture was also bleak for primaries with many seeing budgets reduced by tens of thousands. The meeting also heard from Steve Kneller, principal of Hanham Woods Academy, who described the situation as a "deepening crisis". He said: "The Government says there is more money coming in and there might be - but it doesn't meet the increased costs of pension contributions, national insurance contributions, examination costs, text book costs, staff wages. Year on year headteachers are having to make really difficult decisions about what we cut but there’s not a lot more to cut. "We can’t moan about it or wallow in self pity; we roll up our sleeves. The students show incredible resilience and the staff work incredibly hard. I know my primary colleagues would say the same. They are an absolute credit to the profession, working in really difficult circumstances." Mr Kneller, who took over leaderships at Hanham Woods Academy in April 2016, pointed

Parents and teachers angry over 'unfair' school funding

The panel at the meeting led by parent and teacher Leilah Boyce (left). She was joined by student Izzy Hempstead, Hanham Woods Academy principal Steve Kneller and parent Tara Northern out the injustices of the system. "The Government keeps on saying that there is record levels of funding (in education) which is just not true. "It is also unfair that if a South Gloucestershire child went two miles down the road to Bristol they each be worth about £800 more. That would mean my school would have something like £750,000 a year more funding. Why is that? That seems grossly unfair." Mr Keller said people could show their support by attending similar meetings, lobbying their MP and contacting South Gloucestershire Council. He told attendees: "I would urge you to contact Toby Savage (leader of South Gloucestershire Council) because whilst there is central Government funding cuts, there is an element of South Gloucestershire’s choice in where they distribute their funding." Mr Kneller said he also believed the community could help through support and projects. "I know it shouldn’t be the case for parents and local tradespeople (to help) but if there is anything you can do to support primary schools and secondary schools, it will mean we won’t have to put our reduced funding to those things and that will help us."

Mr Kneller concluded by saying: "I felt I had to come to support both a parent (Leilah Boyce) and a student (Izzy Hempstead) and the local community in what is a deepening crisis." The meeting also heard from Tara Northern, the mother of a SEND (special educational needs and disability) child affected by cuts and Tim Ruck, the headteacher of St Stephen's Infant School. The meeting was attended by two other headteachers, Mike Coyne, the head of Hanham Primary Federation and Christopher Thomas, who leads Beacon Rise primary. Parents at the meeting were

encouraged to lobby MP Chris Skidmore as well as South Gloucestershire councillors. They were handed postcards to fill out and return to Mr Skidmore which urged him to lobby ministers to ensure all schools have sufficient funds to give children a decent education. The postcard also asks the MP to work to change the system which makes South Gloucestershire schools the worst-funded in the country and to address SEND funding issues. It was also suggested parents set up linked Fair Funding groups to highlight issues facing individual schools. Pressure will continue with meetings, schoolgate leafleting and street stalls.

Community transport gets cash lifeline COMMUNITY transport in South Gloucestershire will benefit from a record grant of £800,000. The cash injection will help transform services provided by Kingswood Community Transport, Green Community Travel in Yate and Four Towns and Vale Link Transport in Thornbury. £3m shot in the arm KINGSWOOD will benefit from a slice of £10m thanks to a special Love our High Streets fund. The West of England Combined Authority has put forward the money for community-led regeneration pilot projects in South Glos, B&NES and Bristol. It is expected that about £3m will pour into Kingswood, aimed at transforming the High Street. Plans include creating a studio hub which will offer digital training and equipment for the community, and works on the Whitfield Tabernacle. B&NES will spend the money on improving three shopping hot spots - Midsomer Norton town centre, Bath city centre and Twerton High Street while Bristol will use the cash to develop vacant and underused space in Bedminster. Regional mayor Tim Bowles said: "The future of our high streets isn’t just about shops, it’s about our businesses, community activities, services

and homes. Through Love our High Streets, we’ll work with our councils and communities to embrace the future of our high streets in the digital age, and explore how we can secure funding, expertise and support to revive our town centres." Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore also welcomed the funding boost: "I’m delighted that Kingswood has now been confirmed as the priority for this regional Love our High Streets initiative and look forward to this being progressed with local stakeholders." The decision to fund the schemes was made by the West of England Combined Authority Committee on November 30. The meeting was attended by the six councillors representing Kingswood town centre who urged the mayor to involve them and community groups in the new pilot. Woodstock councillor and Labour group leader Pat Rooney said: "We welcome the award of

m for Kingswood High Street £10m for high street renewal in the West of England and more specifically the nomination of Kingswood as South Gloucestershire’s pilot. However, we do register our concern about the ‘top down’ approach adopted so far. We expect WECA and South Gloucestershire Council to be much more collaborative taking this forward. We find it strange to read that the pilot will be ‘partly delivered by the community’ when the community has not been involved to date. "We and our community partners have the local commitment, local knowledge, local experience and local track record to help drive this ‘Love our High Streets’ pilot to success. We therefore expect to be fully involved both in its development and its delivery." The Combined Authority will also explore external funding, and support the councils to bid for a share of the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

n NEWS KINGSWOOD WI is set to close after 29 years - because no one wants to take charge. The organisation will meet to dissolve its constitution in the New Year after members failed to step up to the roles of president and treasurer. President June Thorn, 68, said: "We've still got a good membership but unfortunately we're unable to find a president and treasurer. "Our current treasurer Pat Bean has done the job for the last 29 years and she's in her early 80s. The founding members have all done their bit over the years. "I took on the role of president two years

ago rather than see the WI close and the same happened again last year so I did a further year. "Back in August I said I wasn't prepared to do another year and no one came forward. Since then nothing has changed so unfortunately, despite having a membership of about 50, we're having to dissolve. On January 10th Kingswood WI will cease." Any monies which are left in the coffers will be held for two years for any future group that wants to start up.

Sadness as WI prepares to close after 29 years June, who has served a total of five years as president, said she was keeping her fingers crossed. "I hope that a group with younger members will start up because at the moment the average member is aged in their 70s. An ageing membership is part of the problem but the other issue is that the members just don't feel they could do it. It's a confidence issue, which is sad, but that's how it is." June, who lives in Kingswood, said: "We've had coach trips and always have a wonderful Christmas party. In the summer we have a walking group and craft days. Unfortunately you can have all the will in the world but if you haven't got anyone to fill the posts then you can't run a WI." The WI has been meeting on the second Thursday of the month at Kingswood Congregational church hall in Hanham Road and attracts mostly local women but some travel from Downend and Longwell Green. June said: "It's going to be a case of you don't know what you've got until you've lost it and I think it will be very sadly missed.

I don't think a lot of the members realise we won't be meeting up again although we will try to form a coffee group or try to get together somehow." June said it would need a president, treasurer and secretary, as well as a committee of about eight, to come forward at the meeting if the WI is to continue. "I don't think that will happen. Primary school Key Stage 2 SATs results 2018

THE number of children achieving the Government's expected standard in reading, writing and maths at the age of 11 is increasing, latest league tables show. The Department for Education issued the validated results of primary school pupils who took the Key Stage 2 SATs tests in May 2018. You can find the figures for all schools at https://www.compare-schoolperformance.service.gov.uk The performance measure shown in our table is for those who reached or exceeded the standard in reading, writing and

maths. Progress measures and past results are also important when considering how a school has done. For example, The Meadows Primary School in Bitton shows results close to the average - but this is a massive improvement on 2017. Parents need to remember that the size of a cohort can affect the figures - in a small school, one child could represent 11 per cent of the total. But whatever the provisos, it is clear that Beacon Rise Primary is maintaining its outstanding standards with a headline figure of 87 per cent.

n ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Crowds out in force for High St festivities CROWDS came out in force to support the High Street's annual Christmas fair. Buoyed by the success of the summer fair, organisers - 54a Hair & Beauty, Flawless Nails & Beauty, Eclectic Gift Shop, John Wood's Cycle Repair Centre and Fleurtations - were keen to make this one every bit as good. Trader Nicola Bartlett, one of the organisers, said: "It was the best attended Christmas fair on the High Street. Santa's grotto proved a huge hit. There were market stalls, street food, street entertainment and the Crofts End Silver Band. "We started planning it straight after the summer fair, so we’re thrilled that so many local families came along and enjoyed the afternoon."

Community rallies round after robbery DONATIONS and messages of support have flooded in after a Bitton shop run by a well-loved couple was targeted by robbers. More than £2,700 has already been raised through an online fundraising page in support of Shyamala and Kandeepan Ambigaipakan. Thieves threatened and restrained Shyamala who was working alone in the shop at around 5.45pm on Thursday December 13. They grabbed thousands of pounds worth of booze and cigarettes from the shelves and raided the till before fleeing. A police spokesman said: "Three men entered the store. One of them restrained the woman worker while the other two stole cash, alcohol, cigarettes and a mobile phone. All three then made off in a black car. "Officers attended immediately and found the woman uninjured but shocked and distressed.

"Just before 8.30pm the same day, officers stopped a vehicle in St Werburghs and seized alcohol, cash and cigarettes. "A man in in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of robbery and later released under investigation." The couple are originally from Sri Lanka and, since taking over the store, have become popular members of the Bitton community. A Go Fund Me page was

Another said: "We really appreciate the contribution your kindness and hard work adds to village life and wish you well in getting over this horrible experience." Mr Ambigaipakan wrote a message in response to show his appreciation: "Thank you for all the bouquets, cards and the many other gifts. Thank you for all this work, and money you have given is enough for us to continue working in the shop successfully. You have been a great help and an amazing community by helping us a lot after this incident." immediately set up by villagers keen to support the couple and, at the time Hanham and Longwell Green Voice went to print, £2,755 had been donated, smashing the original target of £1,000 within days. "These lovely people who work so hard from 6am to 9pm every day to provide us with everything we need, do not deserve this misfortune at this time of year," the funding page stated. One person who gave £50 said: "We are sad that there are such unpleasant people around. Please don't feel we don't value your place in and contribution to the Bitton community."

John Cabot Academy on the up - Ofsted JOHN Cabot Academy in Kingswood is starting 2019 on a high note after receiving a resounding vote of confidence from Ofsted. The education watchdog has rated the school, which takes in students from across the area, as Good in all areas. The Ofsted report, following a two-day inspection at the end of November, is official confirmation that the secondary has bounced back after a couple of difficult years that included a lower judgement in its last inspection and several changes of head teacher. Lead inspector Andrew Lovett said: “Pupils are increasingly proud of their school. They recognise the school is improving and believe it is helping them to realise their ambitions.” He noted that some parents had not yet realised how well the school was doing and urged the school to improve

communication with families. The positive inspection outcome is a boost for JCA and Cabot Learning Federation, of which it was a founding member. Executive principal Sally Apps said: “We are delighted that the great efforts made by our staff and students are recognised in this report, which marks a significant milestone in our ambition to make this school outstanding by 2020. The Ofsted report said: "This is a rapidly improving school. Leaders and teachers are working effectively together to improve all the key aspects of school life. The executive principal and senior leaders are ambitious for the school. They have put good plans in place to achieve their goals. As a result, there have been notable improvements in behaviour and standards." JCA has 1,147 students aged 11 to 18. The sixth form, was said to a strength of the school.

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

THE YEAR ahead promises to bring great news and improvements for our local community, starting with the welcome announcement that Cossham Birth Centre is set to be reopened at the end of February. I really appreciated speaking to NHS professionals at Cossham, and with the trust’s chief executive Andrea Young, who assured me that Cossham Birth Centre has only temporarily closed. When it comes to the safety of newborn babies' lives, it is absolutely crucial that we ensure appropriate staffing levels are in place and don't play party politics with decisions that are needed and necessary. I am very pleased the trust is focusing on ensuring the safety of local women and babies in their care, and was delighted to hear they are making good progress on recruiting more midwives and staff. I am very proud of Cossham Hospital, a local treasure, and I will always stand up to ensure that it is open to the community, after it was threatened with closure before 2010. I hope that I can continue to help make the case also for additional facilities at Cossham, which has been a beacon of support and healthcare for our local community. Many of my family were born here, the hospital inspired my mother to become a NHS nurse, and I recently used the maternity facilities in the aftercare of my son Henry. I want to now make the case for upgrading the MRI scanning facilities at Cossham - and have written in support of this to health secretary Matt Hancock . This would hugely benefit the number of patients able to be given an early diagnosis. We can now also look forward to new funding and investment coming to our local area, with Kingswood

Will Writing & Estate Planning

High Street set to benefit from around £3 million investment, after being confirmed in the West of England Combined Authority "Love Our High Streets" initiative established by Mayor Tim Bowles. This is fantastic news for Kingswood. It is particularly exciting to see proposals that look to the future and seek to increase access to digital training for the community, investment to kick-start a scheme to bring the derelict Whitfield Tabernacle back into use, as well as longterm planning with the community to breathe even more new life into the High Street. This will be a real game-changer for our town centre and it builds on the real sense of momentum that we have established in recent months to improve the Kings Chase Shopping Centre and bring derelict sites back into use. More recently, I was delighted and honoured to have been appointed Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation. Having been a minister before, I am delighted to have been appointed to a role of which I have some experience in, having taught history at Bristol University before becoming a MP. Locally, I have always supported the massive investment in the Bristol and Bath Science Park and the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green, and campaigned for a new Automotive Centre run by the University of Bath which is soon to start construction. Being Universities and Science Minister is a hugely important task, helping to prepare our country for future challenges and opportunities. Yet as your local MP, I will always continue to represent our constituency and work for our community, and hope the new year will bring you all joy and happiness.

n BRISTOL EAST ALLOTMENTS

Potatoes and all that Jazzy! FOR many, once the New Year celebrations have passed it’s time to get back to reality and consider all those resolutions we made for the months ahead, I’m sure everyone will keep them! For gardeners it’s a time to start planning our growing season that lies ahead and usually the first job is buying our seed potatoes as early as possible so they can be stored and planted out from about late March depending on the weather. Some may say, why buy them so early if you don’t plant them out for some weeks? Good question. The main reason is the best and most popular varieties always sell out quickly so it’s a good idea to draw up your list and get stocked up as soon as possible. Storing them can be done in various ways, some use egg cartons to keep them apart, others wrap each one in newspaper and keep them snug in a tray. However you do it, keep a regular check on them as they’ll start to sprout or chit soon but most importantly your storage place must be cool, dry and frost free.

The choice of which variety of seed potato to buy can be overwhelming and many will plump for the traditional ones such as King Edward or Majestic for example but there are others worth considering notably Jazzy which is an excellent waxy salad variety that is full of flavour. Last year, our Allotment Shop stocked Jazzy for the first time and it was the first to sell out. Obviously those in the know and had heard of it’s merits quickly snapped them up. Needless to say our shop manager has increased our stock for this season. Of course, growing your own potatoes is a fantastic way to experiment with different varieties but as already mentioned there are so many to choose from, our shop alone will stock over thirty different types. So if you want to run your own trials many places only sell seeds in pre-packed bags of about two kilogrammes which

might contain about fifteen or so potatoes, obviously far too many if you want a good variation. So our shop does things quite differently as all seed potatoes are sold loose at a kilo price. Come on in and browse around, all are arranged in succession, first early, second early, main-crop and each one has its own information to guide you, all are excellent quality from a reputable UK wholesaler we’ve used consistently year after year. Select as many (or few) as you need of each one, take your time and please ask one of our helpful staff if you need advice. And finally to make things even easier all are just one (and need we say) competitive price, you’ll be delighted with your choice. Our potato sale opens Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th January and continues every weekend, see our details below to find out where we are or use our contact details if you need to know more. As mentioned, most gardeners are beginning to get itchy feet in January and want to get their plots ready for action. But hold on, generally this month temperatures and light levels are both too low for sowing any seed, they will struggle to make any growth and most likely will be overtaken by February sowings. Think of Valentine’s Day as an easy date to remember, from then on daylight begins to increase fast when broad beans could be sown directly outside as well as garlic. And if you have a greenhouse, spinach, lettuce, peas for shoots, onion, salad onion and early brassicas could be underway. Peas for shoots were just mentioned, regular readers may remember we tried this before. Simply take a six inch wide pot, fill up to half way with compost. Sprinkle a layer of pea seeds over this, dried peas from the supermarket will do. Add about an inch of compost then another layer

Grass and weedy area 6 weeks after of peas, top off with more compost. Keep moist in the greenhouse or a sunny window sill. The shoots that emerge will be succulent tips for adding to a salad or sandwiches. Back to January and for those wanting to get outside take a peek inside your compost bin. If you previously added your green waste weeks ago it could by now be full of beautiful crumbly compost, if it is and in the absence of worms it’ll be time to make use of it. If your beds have been dug over, or if you are a no dig gardener spread as much of the compost over the bed, no need to dig it in, nature will take it down for you. But if you are just starting out and have recently taken a plot over that’s covered in grass and weeds mulch the area with a covering

CLF Post 16 students bring fun and a serious message to care homes

www.doorexpresssouthwest.co.uk

SIXTH formers from Cabot Learning Federation’s Post 16 hosted an afternoon of entertainment and fun for forty elderly people. Residents of Kingswood Court, the Beeches, Begbrooke House, Fairview Court, Dewhurst, Redfield Lodge, and Cleeve Lodge care homes joined the health and social care students. The guests were entertained by the John Cabot Academy choir and a pantomime was performed by a local theatre company. The festive tea party had a serious note too, as the students talked to their guests about health and fitness, using armchair aerobics, keeping their minds active and the importance of the winter flu jab. This was because, as part of their coursework, students have to deliver a health promotion campaign.

Schools praised for exceptional achievements LONGWELL Green gymnast Claudia Fragapane was on hand to present awards recognising the educational achievements of schools in South Gloucestershire. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist gymnast and Strictly Come Dancing semifinalist gave out gongs to winning schools which included Hanham Woods Academy, Sir Bernard Lovell Academy, Digitech Studio School, King's Oak Academy and New Horizons Learning Centre. The evening event, hosted by South Gloucestershire Council, was to celebrate the outstanding educational achievements and successes over the past year of more than 100 students and staff from secondary schools in the area. The winners and guests, including parents and carers, were invited to Aerospace Bristol for the South Gloucestershire Secondary Education Awards 2018, which acknowledged the hard work of youngsters across

Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The authority also recognised the dedication of school teachers and staff who helped make this possible. Hanham Woods Academy’s Elliott Swanton was nominated for his energetic and passionate leadership of their successful physical education department, which resulted in excellent examination results in GCSE PE and BTEC Sport. Also, in extracurricular activities, hundreds of students benefit from his team’s

support. The school excels in football and netball, regularly winning county, regional and national competitions. Sir Bernard Lovell Academy 13-year-old student Lottie Johnson’s outstanding contribution to her school and wider community were highlighted. She is described as 'a model student but, above that, an exceptionally compassionate and dedicated member of the school community.' When she joined in Year 7, she was already volunteering to support disabled children in swimming classes. Lottie has continued her caring approach, applying for the position of house captain in Year 8, which she successfully

achieved, and then participating fully in all aspects of charity fundraising at the school. There were a total of 118 award winners, covering 18 different schools across South Gloucestershire. Claudia presented certificates and £50 Mall gift vouchers to each winner. She said: "It was fantastic to be part of this celebratory event and so inspiring to hear more about all the academic successes of those attending. The students and teachers have clearly worked really hard and deserve this recognition for their positive efforts." Council leader Toby Savage said the winning students and teachers were great positive role models. "A massive well done to all our winners; you are a testament to the fact that, whatever level of study you are in, having the right attitude and working hard always pays off," he told them

Jessie May smashes seasonal target KINGSWOOD-based charity Jessie May is celebrating after its Christmas campaign raised enough money to support an extra 15 terminally ill children. The charity raised more than £33,000 during the national match-funding campaign The Big Give Christmas Challenge. Jessie May took part in the weeklong campaign between November 27 and December 4, with the aim of raising £23,100 - the funding required to welcome 11 additional children to their services. During campaign week, supporters had the opportunity to have their donation doubled through The Big Give, as they were matched pound for pound by the charity’s ‘Pledgers’. The charity reached its £23,100 online fundraising target within five hours of the campaign going live, and went on to raise a total of £33,495.75 during the week. This funding means 15, instead of the targeted 11, children with life limiting conditions can be supported by Jessie May’s specialist nurses. Chris Roys, CEO at Jessie May, said: "We are absolutely thrilled with this fantastic

It was quite a shock to reach our £23,100 target so quickly – just hours in to our Big Give campaign going live – and to then continue to receive donations in support of our nurses’ vital work. "This level of funding will make a huge difference to our charity; enabling us to welcome additional children and families on to our caseload, and ensuring we can

continue to provide our services to those our nurses are already supporting through respite care, emotional support, end of life care and bereavement support." The charity’s nurses are currently supporting 139 children and 49 bereaved families across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath & North East Somerset.
