Charity single set to help Oscar, 4, walk on his own A FOUR-year-old boy with cerebral palsy is hoping to be able to walk independently thanks to a Christmas single. Oscar Cridge from Barrs Court needs specialist spinal surgery at Bristol Children’s Hospital. It will enable his legs to receive the correct signals from his brain so he can learn to walk without a frame. But the operation isn’t available to him under the NHS so parents Emma and Shaun, age 31 and 37, need to raise £25,000 to pay for it. They also need to raise tens of thousands more for ongoing rehab and physio, specialist splints and hydrotherapy. Luckily a huge boost to fundraising has come from an unlikely source: a Christmas single dedicated to Oscar, written by a complete stranger. The song, Put The Fairy On The Tree, came about after Shaun happened to talk about Oscar’s struggles to a woman running a burger van. She had heard about charity work done by a musician from Hull and contacted him to see if he could help fundraise. Darren Sims, known as Daz, has spent the past decade raising more than £800,000 for causes across the UK. His work has been recognised with Pride of Britain and Point of Light awards. He agreed to help Oscar but lockdown made many fundraising events, such as charity football matches and concerts, impossible. So Daz decided to produce the DIY Christmas single, filming the video on his phone featuring three generations of his own family with whom he was spending lockdown. He added in footage of Oscar enjoying Christmas filmed by Oscar’s parents. Daughter Scarlett wrote the lyrics, and DAZ

'Tier decisions show lack of logic' THE battle to stop the spread of Covid-19 is set to dominate the first weeks of 2021 for people in Hanham and Longwell Green and across the country. Case numbers in our immediate area remained fairly low as the Voice went to print but the number of people confirmed with the infection was rising in many places and concerns were growing about a new strain of coronavirus, which is thought to spread more easily. On December 17, the Government announced that South Gloucestershire would keep its Tier 3 restrictions, while neighbouring Bristol went down to Tier 2. A week later, stronger Tier 4 restrictions - similar to a full lockdown - were being discussed for many parts of the country. Kingswood MP Chris

Skidmore and the leader of South Gloucestershire Council criticised the "contradictory" decision to have different limits in Bristol and South Glos when the areas were so closely intertwined and used the same hospitals. "The decision to isolate South Gloucestershire in such a way, without a clear, transparent and understandable logic has not been understood in the local area (or more widely), and seriously risks the credibility of the national system, restrictions, and our work at a local level to reduce the levels of the virus," Councillor Savage said in a letter to Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Glimmer of hope as Covid jabs begin THE first Hanham and Longwell Green residents had their Covid jabs a few days before Christmas. The start of the vaccination programme is a sign of hope for 2021 after nine difficult months last year since the coronavirus pandemic began. Kingswood Health Centre was the venue for delivery of the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine, with GPs, nurses and pharmacists from Hanham Health, Cadbury Heath Healthcare and Close Farm Surgery involved. The first patients, aged over 80, and some frontline health and social care workers, were selected by surgeries and invited to receive their first doses. More surgeries will be joining the rollout of the vaccination programme this month. GP Dr Neil Kerfoot, part of the team vaccinating people at Kingswood Health Centre said: “We are really excited to be able to start vaccinating local residents to help protect them

Dr Neil Kerfoot, above right, talks about the start of jabs locally against coronavirus. "We are asking everyone to be patient and not to contact their surgery in relation to vaccination - we will contact you when we are ready to book you in. "To be in this position is testament to our incredible workforce - they have pulled out all the stops to ensure we are able to start vaccinating. This includes identifying suitable

sites and putting in place strong processes to meet the logistical challenges of a programme of this size and scale.” Sara Blackmore, director of public health at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “This is fantastic progress, and it has been a real partnership effort. It is still vital that we keep following the guidance: Hands, Face, Space; to protect ourselves,

our family, friends, neighbours and our whole community. While there will be vaccine for everyone who needs it, the scale of the task means it is going to take some time, and we need to stay mindful of the threat of the virus and do everything we can to limit spread.” The priority order for those having the jabs has been decided by Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI): 1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers; 2. aged 80 and over and frontline health and social care workers; 3. 75 and over; 4. 70 and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals; 5. 65 and over and all aged 16 to 64 with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality; all those 60 and over; 55 and over; 50 and over. LONGWELL Green’s hidden gem, Willsbridge Mill and nature reserve, has big plans for a 2021 comeback after being hit hard by 2020’s restrictions. Concealed off Willsbridge Hill, the mill was built in 1712 in what was the ancient Kingswood Forest, extending all the way from the River Severn to Lansdown. Originally an iron mill, then a grain mill, the building fell into disrepair in the 1960s following devastating floods around Kingswood, Hanham and Keynsham. It is now owned by South Gloucestershire Council. From the 1980s the council leased the mill as an education centre to Avon Wildlife Trust, who still look after the nature reserve valley surrounding the mill. Since 2014 the main mill buildings and barn have been

maintained and regenerated by Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh (WMCR), a not-forprofit voluntary group made up of seven core volunteers as well as around a dozen others who help with projects. Despite 2020’s Covid restrictions, the volunteers still managed to run a range of events and carry out improvements to the site. A fairy trail around the woods was set up, ending at a decorated fairy grotto. More than 300 people attended the opening weekend of the trail in August and the mill sold out of activity packs and fairy wings. In October a pumpkin hunt through the nature reserve was organised. The sold-out event attracted more than 200 visitors and included enchanted music and lights, as well as a big pumpkin display in the mill.

volunteers keep the magic alive But many of the events that would have brought in muchneeded revenue for the mill were unable to go ahead. Mother’s Day afternoon teas, arts and cultural days, a duck race and Santa’s grotto were all put on ice until 2021. Even the outdoor forest school, launched in October for toddlers and preschoolers, only managed a few taster sessions before the second lockdown hit and it was forced to temporarily close. More bad news came when more than 30 trees in the nature reserve were found to be suffering from ash dieback, a fungal disease that meant they needed to be felled. They will be replaced with a wider variety of trees to attract a bigger range of wildlife WMCR chair Frank Ward, a computer teacher at Wellsway School, said they have launched a GoFundMe page to try to raise £10k from the community to support its work. He is appealing for more volunteers, such as gardeners, to give up a little time to help maintain the mill and its grounds. He said: “We’ve actually had more visitors than ever to the nature reserve. During the first lockdown lots of people came for exercise and many of them have carried on coming regularly now they’ve discovered it. “But we have suffered a lot financially. We’d just finished refurbishing the café when the first lockdown started so we’ve yet to show that to people. We made a little revenue from a takeaway service once that was allowed but nothing like what we’d normally make.”

A fairy grotto adds to the magic of Willsbridge Mill's nature reserve Luckily £10k from the Heritage Lottery Fund has paid to make Covid improvements to the site, including building an outdoor shelter for the café. A further £10k from the government Culture Recovery Fund will be put towards turning the mill building into a proper museum. Plans already under way for the coming year include deepening the existing pond,

which often dries out in summer, to make a year-round wildlife garden suitable for pond dipping and spotting insects, amphibians and mammals. Four of the existing mini ponds in old baths, a favourite with Willsbridge Mill’s youngest visitors, will be kept and a new rockery and bog garden will be added. The project is due for completion by spring 2021. Regular forest school sessions

will resume as soon as it’s safe and permitted to do so and it’s hoped these can be offered for school visits too. Frank said: “We’d like not just local children to be able to benefit from the mill, but also children who are at inner-city schools and perhaps don’t get much opportunity to interact with nature. “We also want to get started on the jewel in the crown of the site, which is the mill. There are some old displays but we want to create modern, interactive displays that really tell the story about the mill. “We’d also love to add subtle QR codes around the nature trail and valley. People could scan the code with their phone and see a picture of what that exact spot looked like 50 years ago, or find out more about an interesting tree.” A gift shop, events space and much-needed new windows for the mill building are also on the agenda for 2021. Longer term, WMCR wants a car park closer to the mill buildings to make it easier for wheelchair and buggy users to visit. The current car park in Long Beach Road is 500m from the mill and is muddy and poorly lit in winter. Frank said: “We’ve got a lot that we’d like to do here but the most important thing for us is to tell people that Willsbridge Mill is a fantastic place to come with the family to get near to nature. It’s a gem and we love it!” https://uk.gofundme.com/f/ willsbridge-mill

WELLSWAY School will start the search for a new principal this month. Matthew Woodville, who has led the school for five years, is moving in September to become principal of Bedminster Down School. A new principal should be in place at Wellsway by the start of the academic yeqr. "I know that I am handing over a very strong school to my successor," Mr Woodville said. Debbie Gibbs, who has been interim head at Bedminster Down, will return to her permanent post as principal of IKB Academy, which shares the Wellsway campus in Keynsham. Malcolm Broad, chairman of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust board, said: These appointments will set up these three secondaries for great success next year.”

WORK is back under way on a new television series written and directed by Hanham’s Stephen Merchant. Stephen also has a role in the show, The Offenders, which is coming to BBC One and Amazon Prime Video. The Offenders has a strong cast, which includes Oscar winning actor Christopher Walken in his first lead British television role. Robert Del Naja from Bristol electronic band

Massive Attack will compose the music for the series. Stephen Merchant said: "Like so many other productions, we’d just begun filming when Covid 19 struck and we had to shut down. I’m delighted that we’re now finally able to resume filming with this incredible cast and finish this long-standing passion project. This is the first series I’ve made in my hometown of Bristol and I’m so excited to showcase the city and utilise the amazing local talent.” The series will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Amazon Prime Video in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Hanham's first window trail proves a hit WINDOWS were lit up with cheery scenes for the first Hanham Shine Your Light trail. Nearly 50 households, businesses, churches, nurseries and schools produced creative, illuminated window displays. Residents could follow a map of the walking trail along 28 roads from December 18 to 20 and hundreds of people also viewed photos of the displays online. Children at Christ Church primary school displayed their work in Hanham Christ Church, which also organised a nativity trail of displays with goody bags for children who spotted all seven scenes. Art shop Artime’s display was an incredibly detailed nativity scene, painted by Vincent Brown who appeared on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Trail organiser Chloe Scholefield, 41, who moved to Hanham during the July lockdown, worked with her son, Hector, age three, to create her own displays featuring dinosaurs in Christmas hats and animals

looking at a bright star. She said: “I really enjoyed organising Hanham Shine Your Light and meeting new people. ’ve enjoyed seeing what people created and I’ve especially enjoyed the happiness that it’s given to other people, including the excitement that Hector got from it all.” Chloe, who works as an art technician at Bristol Brunel Academy, plans to run the trail again next Christmas after positive feedback this year saying the trail was wonderful and had cheered people up. She said: “I have had people say they would like to do it again and also volunteer to help out with the organising. “I would like to get more people doing displays and run creative workshops to help support people in developing and trying out new ideas. I would also like to run a lantern parade as part of the trail weekend.” She is hoping to involve care homes, more schools, the youth centre and the library in 2021 to make the trail more accessible.

of proud history EXCITING plans are being made to celebrate 100 years of education at King's Oak Academy. An exhibition, reunion and other events are planned for 2021 if Covid restrictions allow. Founded as Kingswood Secondary School in 1921, the school became Kingswood Grammar School in 1927 then Kingsfield School in 1968. Since 2011 it has been known as King’s Oak Academy. The original, wooden school building famously burned down in a suspected arson attack in 1976, with 80 firefighters tackling a blaze that could be seen for miles. The replacement building in Brook Road, was completed in 1977 and in recent years a primary section, known as the King's Oak Acorn building, has been added. Current academy principal Katherine Ogden said: “Now part of the Cabot Learning Foundation, we are delighted that in September 2021 we will become a full all-through four to sixteen academy serving the heart of the Kingswood and South Gloucestershire community. “To mark this occasion, we are currently planning a number of events and ask for your help. Do you have any photographs or memorabilia from your or from members of your family’s time at the school?” Kingswood Heritage Museum will run an exhibition from April to November, including more

It will feature key individuals associated with the schools, including the first headmaster, Major Elton, and distinguished ex pupils.” Former pupil Mike Bendrey, who edits a biannual Kingswood Old Scholars Association newsletter, is helping the museum put together a list of alumni who have gone on to great things. They include physicist Sir Bernard Lovell, who tracked Soviet satellite Sputnik for the British military; planetary scientist Professor Colin Pillinger, best known for the Beagle 2 Mars lander; and Richard Scudamore, former CEO of the FA Premier League. Writing in Times Higher Education, Prof Pillinger revealed that the wooden school was nicknamed “the cow sheds” when he attended and that seeing Sir Lovell’s name on the school honours board helped inspire him. Project with a lot of heart BEACON Rise Primary School pupils have taken part in a collaborative art pr0ject with five other schools. Each one of nearly 2,000 pupils of Beacon Rise, Pucklechurch, Barley Close, Marshfield, Christ Church Infants and Christ Church Juniors designed, created and painted a clay heart. Each year group painted their hearts a different colour and the hearts were collected together and sent from school to school, with an appropriate Covid isolation gap between each visit, for pupils to arrange in a way of their choosing, making a series of spectacular displays. The idea for the project came from the schools, which are members of the Ignite Hub, reflecting on their recent memories

from lockdown. Each heart represents the love the school communities have for each other, their families and people who help them, and each heart is also a tribute to NHS staff and key workers. Teacher Catherine Powell said: “Ignite Hearts has helped us all to reflect on how 0ur current situation has impacted us and the importance of love and kindness in our community. As a Hub we are working together even at this time when we have to stay apart."

Mr and Mrs Mead were among the residents of Magpie Court in Hanham High Street who received some of more than 60 Christmas cards handmade by Beacon Rise pupils. In return, the residents sent the school some chocolate coins.

Sixth form centre could be built on old fire station site

CABOT Learning Federation, which runs several secondary schools in east Bristol, is a step closer to getting a permanent home for its sixth form. Bristol City Council has committed £4.5m towards a building for CLF Post 16 on the old Speedwell Fire Station site. But until Government approval is received and the new sixth form built alongside Bristol Brunel Academy, some post-16 students will have to travel to other CLF sites for their lessons from September. CLF is finalising these temporary arrangements, which could include sixth-formers being accommodated at King’s Oak Academy in Kingswood, Hanham Woods Academy and Digitech in Warmley. It said in a statement: “CLF Post 16 students currently learn at both Bristol Brunel and John Cabot Academies. While the permanent build is ongoing, in addition to those two academies, some of our CLF Post 16 provision will be relocated to other local accommodation,

including other nearby CLF academies, which will allow us to maintain the high standards our post-16 students currently enjoy. We will be able to confirm these interim arrangements later this year.” The deal reached by the council and CLF means that 138 extra spaces for Year 7 students in September 2021 can be created, to meet the needs of a population bulge in the area. The council had hoped a new secondary school at Temple Quarter could be agreed in time to meet some of this demand but the project has been greatly delayed and will not open before September 2023 at the earliest. The federation’s statement continued: “All of the CLF schools in the area have grown gradually over recent years to

continue to meet the demand for places from the local community. This has allowed them to plan carefully for this additional growth, ensuring that standards remain high both for current pupils and those who will join in the future. “The additional space for Year 7 students from September 2021 will be available at Bristol Brunel, John Cabot, and City Academies, with Bristol Metropolitan Academy maintaining current admission numbers. This should ensure that local children will be able to secure a place at a local school that is at least ‘Good’, both within the CLF and the other excellent schools in the area. “We are also excited about the opportunity to maintain a strong Post 16 provision in the BS5 area, continuing to serve local

students and building capacity for the growth in numbers in a new building, as the ‘bulge’ moves through into sixth form in coming years.” CLF chief executive Steve Taylor said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to provide capacity over the past three years and am excited about the future of our Post 16 provision. It’s already very strong and the new accommodation will allow it, and its students, to really fly.” Cabinet member for education Anna Keen said: “We are so pleased … to provide such a positive outcome for the pupils in east Bristol and we’re really delighted that the post-16 offer in the area can be expanded.” She thanked CLF for “incredible partnership working and commitment to the city”.

Spaces for babies at popular nursery SPACES for babies at a sought-after Hanham day nursery have been made available for parents thinking about childcare options for 2021. The Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School at Hanham Hall caters for babies from threemonths old and has a handful of spaces available for children in its age-specific Baby Room. Nursery manager Hannah Lark said a big intake of children recently ‘graduated’ to the setting’s Tweeny Room for ages 14 months to two years. Hannah said: “It’s been really lovely to see a lot of our babies move up to the Tweeny Room recently and it does mean that we have availability for our Baby Room, which isn’t always the case! “We know that a lot of mums plan for their maternity leave to end at Christmas so now is a great time to begin introducing children to the nursery ahead of our January term. “We have a team of qualified nursery staff and the dedicated baby team are fantastic at helping

children to settle in our lovely home-from-home environment. We take pride in our caring approach to sleep, weaning, teething and everything else that comes with looking after babies and we will always take the parents’ lead on meeting their child’s individual needs.”

The nursery has made a virtual tour video so parents are able to meet the team and view the facilities remotely but there are also Covid-safe opportunities to visit the nursery too. Based just off Whittucks Road, the nursery is in a beautiful building surrounded by two

gardens. With two parks, a secret garden and allotments all close by there are lots of opportunities for outdoor exploration. The nursery has age-specific rooms filled with educational resources. Hot meals are prepared on site by the nursery chef. Ideally located to serve families commuting to Bristol from Bath, Keynsham and surrounding areas, as well as children living in the local community, the Hanham Hall nursery has been popular since it first opened in 2015. Hannah continued: ““Attending nursery offers such great benefits for children including social, emotional, physical and educational development and for babies, who have unfortunately been growing up in lockdown, being amongst peers is a really important and lovely experience.” To view the virtual tour please visit https://mamabear.co.uk/ nurseries/bristol/hanham-hall To find out more and book a Covid-safe tour call Hannah on 0117 428 1354.

Mum on a mission to build emotional resilience A MUM of four from Longwell Green has written a book to help those suffering from low mood and anxiety after experiencing loss, grief and struggle in her own life. In little over a year, Clare Davis’s brother died, her house burnt down, her four-yearold went missing for five hours and she was diagnosed with skin cancer. These events happened in Australia, after Clare moved back to the country of her birth with her young family in 2007. n COMMUNITY NEWS n WE ARE Black Sheep Harmony, an eightyear-old ladies’ A Cappella choir with roots in barbershop and a membership of more than 30. We’ve competed nationally and locally and performed at many local events and concerts. A Cappella means singing without instruments and when we sing in harmony it’s like nothing else – it’s more than the sum of its parts, as four human voices singing a chord can get notes for free with overtones and undertones! The pandemic has affected people’s jobs, hobbies and health, and choral singing as we know it has stopped completely. We’ve embraced Zoom and virtually(!) all of our meetings since March have been online. This has been challenging, especially as it coincided with the arrival of our new musical director, Pete “Nooj” Nugent. He has yet to lead a physical rehearsal, but he’s done an amazing job of keeping our Thursday rehearsals interesting. Our meetings at Cadbury Heath Hall have always involved a chat, cake and soft drinks, but things are so different at present. At our Zoom meetings, we try to sing and socialise in equal measure and include fun items such as Desert Island Discs, quizzes, show and tell, and our latest – “Who are Ewe” (we love a sheep pun) - a chance to share a secret. These items have kept us connected during this difficult year. Unlike many singing groups, we’ve continued recruiting during 2020, quite an

achievement as many choirs are struggling to retain existing members. In autumn 2020, we hosted “Zoom into Christmas”, a popular (49 attendees) five-week online course for women of all singing abilities, local or not (one lady joined us from Australia, where it was early morning). The aims of the course were to teach two Christmas songs in four-part harmony to the chorus and course delegates, and produce a Christmas Choir video; to help the attendees develop their singing voice with a range of vocal

techniques; and encourage people to take up singing, maybe even join Black Sheep. During lockdown, members of Black Sheep Harmony learned, recorded and produced a video of Caro Emerald’s “That Man” arranged by our very own Pete Nugent and edited by Kathy Farrell. To watch our videos and find out how to join Black Sheep Harmony, visit our website at www. blacksheepharmony.co.uk. Sue Davis, Assistant Music Director

Fish, chips ... and toys A KINGSWOOD mum organised a Christmas present collection to make sure no child went without one. Ebony Kenington, 21, asked people to donate presents at her business, the Clock Tower Fish Bar in Kingswood. She also created an Amazon wish list of presents for children of different ages so that people who were isolating could donate. It took her two days to wrap all the donations that came in, to bring Christmas cheer to around 40 children. She said: “It was a rubbish year with lots of local people losing their jobs and

there are lots of families who would have to go without at Christmas. “I thought this would be a way to bring the community together and help those that need it. I ended up with three black bags full of presents.” The presents were distributed with the help of one of the Clock Tower’s delivery drivers, Shauna Millman, who arranged for families in need to get in touch via Facebook or text with the ages of their children. The kind actions follow on from Ebony’s work during October half term, when she gave away 40 free children’s meals and 100 food parcels.

ELDERLY people were treated to blankets and hot water bottles to help them stay warm over Christmas. Juice Community Project in Cadbury Heath delivered 100 Warm and Well packs to vulnerable people in December. Funding from Bitton Parish Council, Banjo Island Community & Sports Association and donations allowed £1,200 to be spent. Longwell Green WI knitted hats, scarves and blankets. Recipients could enjoy tea and coffee, a thermal cup, gloves, a hot water bottle, blankets, hat, scarves, a selection box, a book and other treats.

Juice founder Janice Suffolk said: “There were lots of people arranging Christmas presents for children so we decided to do something a bit different. We knew it could get a lot colder during winter so thought it would be good to do something to help elderly people.” Housing association Bromford Housing distributed the packs to their residents, neighbours collected packs, and Juice also delivered to elderly people it had worked with during 2020. They also handed out donations from Mustard Tree church in Longwell Green and 27 hampers.

n LETTER When will we sing again? THAT'S a question that thousands of people will be asking across the UK as we enter into January and hopefully a new world, post-coronavirus. Back in March we all had to cancel our live choir rehearsals and move our singing into peoples’ front rooms. Sofa-singing became the norm, either through the medium of Zoom or with

pre-recorded rehearsals online. With no other alternative, sofa singing was born! Hundreds of choirs moved to the internet to enable their members to keep singing and as technical skills developed, more concerts went online. As we enter 2021, choir leaders and singers from across the world look forward to the day when rehearsals will recommence in rehearsal rooms and plans can be made for concerts and choir tours abroad. If we believe what we are told by those in power, we should be singing

MP's 'disastrous' idea BATH’S MP has come under fire after suggesting that lorries should be diverted away from the city to the A420 when travelling to Bristol and beyond. Wera Hobhouse is campaigning to “redirect eastwest traffic from the A4 and Bristol to the A420 north of the city” to protect Bath’s Cleveland Bridge. But South Gloucestershire councillors for Wick and Warmley say she has not consulted them over the idea, which they believe would flood the area with traffic and cause pollution. Parkwall and Warmley, Councillor Elizabeth Bromiley, said: “It is truly disappointing that the Lib Dem MP for Bath would consider such a disastrous scheme to be worthwhile, given the impact it would have on nearby rural communities. Our villages already have to deal with high levels of HGVs travelling

along the A420 and this would make the problem totally unsustainable.” Boyd Valley Councillor Ben Stokessaid Ms Hobhouse’s campaign was blinkered. Nearly 1,300 people have signed the MP's petition to direct vehicles of 18 tonnes or over away from the bridge, a Grade II* listed structure. The bridge is subject to a temporary weight restriction until £3.9m repairs are carried out. Ms Hobhouse wants this curb to be permanent. She told an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on November 17: “The weight of modern HGVs is shaking the bridge to bits.” Transport minister Rachael Maclean said the West of England Combined Authority considers Cleveland Bridge as a key structure in the region, but any further restrictions would harm the economy.
