'NHS staff are people too' LOCAL NHS surgeries and hospitals are repeating calls for people to be kind and respectful, following a rise in violent, aggressive and abusive behaviour towards staff. While most patients and visitors are respectful and appreciative, there has continued to be a worrying rise in abusive behaviour during the Covid-19 pandemic. A campaign called ‘It’s not

OK’ is under way, which features staff sharing their experiences and urging the public to respect healthcare staff and remember that they’re people, too, following the rise in incidents. Robyn Clark, practice manager at Kingswood Health Centre, said: “There is enormous pressure on the healthcare system at the moment and surgery staff are doing their best to support and assist patients

wherever possible. Sadly the amount of abuse being directed at them is still continuing and I have had to write to more patients regarding unacceptable behaviour in the last six months than in the previous four years. “We want to reinforce that healthcare staff are people too, and patients should treat staff how they would like to be treated in the same scenario. We are all in this together.”

Kindness of strangers after driver's cardiac arrest STRANGERS who helped a man suffering from cardiac arrest while driving a van have been praised by his wife. Tina Lewis put out a public appeal via Facebook to find the kind people who leaped into action at the incident involving her husband, Stu. She wrote: “I had the most dreaded news about my husband having a cardiac arrest whilst driving and then ploughed into a car. “The accident happened between Hanham and Longwell Green near the roundabout at around 2ish in the afternoon. “We are looking for the nurse that helped get my husband out of the van with the other lady and started CPR immediately.” Luckily a host of people who helped out at the incident went public about their part in saving the man’s life. Chelsea Gosling revealed that she was the nurse who was one of three people taking it in turns to perform CPR until the ambulance arrived. She wrote: “I was the nurse that helped your husband. I am so unbelievably happy to have read your post! “So pleased he survived! Haven’t stopped thinking about it!” Jimmy Hazard added that he helped pull Stu out of his van after the accident. He wrote: “Glad to hear he is on the mend. “Me and my mate were there to help get him out of the van. The nurse and the other

lady were on hand and did an unbelievable job!” Clare Wyatt added that she was another helper on the day: “So glad Stu is ok bless him. I really didn’t think he was going to make it when I jumped I his van and dragged him out so the nurse could do CPR and I could call [an] ambulance. “Such an upsetting day. I didn’t think I would get over it but seeing he survived has made me feel so much better. “I’m so glad he’s ok now and recovering nicely. Can’t wait to meet him, he owes me a cuddle.” Ms Lewis later updated people to say she was in contact with those that had helped save the day. She wrote: “I have now … found the three beautiful people that performed CPR on my husband. Also managed to find the gentleman that, with the help of his work mate, got my husband out of the van. “Hopefully when my husband is stronger [he] can meet all the amazing people that were involved on that day. Once again, thank you all so much.” Luckily another poster was able to give an update on the driver and passenger of the car that Stu’s van hit. Nina Penny wrote: “My friend and her partner were in the other car involved in this head-on collision. “They’re still suffering a few after effects of the accident, sadly, but also feel lucky as it could’ve been so much worse.”

Street pastor Andy mourned A FORMER Kingswood vicar and street pastor has died following a car accident. Reverend Andy Mason, 44, died of his injuries on 2nd December, fewer than two weeks after the accident in Chichester. He is survived by a wife and daughter. His work in the area spanned a decade and included being vicar at Holy Trinity church, work at Kingswood Foodbank and Bourne Family Project and working as a street pastor. He was also involved with Dreamscheme school holiday project at Kingsmeadow Community Flat and the Kingsmeadow@Made Forever charity, and ran Sunday suppers at New Cheltenham community centre. He was fondly remembered for his Wednesday night Pints of View sessions in Wetherspoons.

Kleeneze site: no change on car parking spaces in spite of local concerns

MORE than half the public responses to plans for the former Kleeneze site have been about parking, traffic and road access. Homes England, the government’s housing delivery agency, has submitted an outline planning application to South Gloucestershire Council to agree key parts of the development including access and building height. Once this is approved, expected to be by March this year, detailed plans will be submitted for the site. Building work is expected to commence in summer 2023. Work has already begun preparing the six-acre brownfield site off Anstey’s Road, by removing old warehouses, and levelling and stabilising the ground, which was used for coal mining in the past. Up to 200 homes are planned for the site, with a mix of flats and houses. Up to 70 of those will be affordable housing, making up 35% of properties. However, the proposed “Urban Lifestyles” design, which encourages people to walk, cycle and use public transport instead of own a car, was criticised by many who attended an online public meeting last June. Currently, 71 per cent of Hanham residents travel to work by car. The new site will provide around 190 to 243 car parking spaces for a predicted 350 to 450 new residents. Around 55 spaces will be for car club users or for visitors, with fewer than 200 spaces allocated to home owners. One Hanham business owner commented: “We think this will be great for the High Street and business. Our only concern would be the parking as our staff already struggle to find spaces.” Another resident said: “I welcome this development but I’m very concerned about the lack of parking.” In its current outline planning application, Homes England has acknowledged the concerns raised by people in Hanham. It said: “Residents are concerned that the new residents of the development would own more cars than anticipated and catered for on-site, pushing

The new 'urban lifestyle' development will have 190-243 parking spaces for an estimated 350-450 people. Locals say it's not enough but the developers say 'residents would not be reliant on owning a car' out into the nearby roads and causing more parking problems for existing residents.” Despite these concerns, the suggested car parking allocation has not been altered following the public feedback. A travel plan submitted by Homes England said: “The site is considered to be located in a suitable/accessible location where residents would not be reliant upon owning a car.” The Sealtech site next door will continue operating, with work to move its access to New Walk beginning later this month. Homes England smanager John Boutwood said: “Outline permission will guide the next steps in the redevelopment process of the former Kleeneze site, which is a very prominent brownfield site and has been vacant for decades. We are excited about the potential to deliver a vibrant new neighbourhood for Hanham, providing the homes that people need in a central location, close to shops and amenities. We thank the community for their interest in the evolving plans and for taking the time to provide us with their feedback.” Comments on the planning application can be made on the council’s website under planning reference P21/07602/O.

'Doorstep heady pirates' alert Heady heady heady

POLICE have warned of a big rise in the theft of parcels and mail from the doorsteps of xxxxxxxx people’s homes over the past year. News of the increased activity of so-called “doorstep pirates” comes as many people are ordering gifts from delivery companies such as Amazon ahead of Christmas. Chief inspector Dan Forster, Avon and Somerset Police’s area commander for South Gloucestershire, said the number of reported incidents of theft of parcels and mail from people’s doorsteps in the district had nearly tripled in the past year, compared with the previous 12 months. Some 58 incidents were reported in the year to November, compared with 20 in the previous 12 months, he told members of South Gloucestershire’s multi-agency community safety partnership. Making a difference to young lives

id you know that every 20 minutes a child comes into care in the UK, sometimes for a short period and other times until they reach adulthood? Currently there is a demand for at least 8,000 new fostering families in the UK over the next 12 months to ensure that every child entering foster care can live with a family that meets their needs. Practically, to become a foster carer, you need to be between 21 and 65, and have a spare room. But you also need to have the ability to provide nurturing care, patience to work through difficulties you may encounter with your foster child, and the dedication to provide advocacy to your foster child. Your cultural background, marital status, sexuality, or disability do not play a part in determining whether you’re suitable. Becoming a foster carer will take around six months. During this time, you will be expected to complete foster training, and there will be visits from a social worker, who will conduct a ‘Form F’ assessment. This takes a more in-depth look at you, and your partner if you have one, your commitment to fostering, your background, health, and other family lifestyle factors. You would also provide referees who will be contacted to provide evidence of your suitability to become a foster carer. Once the assessment has been completed, you will have a final interview with a fostering panel who will make the decision as to whether you will be approved to foster. It is a long journey to become a foster carer but it allows time to reflect and ask questions, not just for yourself but also your family and friends, to ensure that fostering is the right decision for you.

Oh yes he is! Andy Ford coming to Longwell Green COMEDIAN and panto legend Andy Ford is coming to Longwell Green for a one-night show for charity. He has agreed to perform his Back In The Saddle stand up show for a reduced price to help raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. The show was originally planned for September 2020, but was postponed because of Covid restrictions. It will now take place on Saturday 9th April from 7.30 to 10.30pm, with tickets available for £15. The visit is thanks to Kingswood resident Charlotte Skuse, who contacted Mr Ford directly to ask for his help. Ms Skuse, 31, has been raising funds for the charity since losing her mother, Rosemarie, to pancreatic cancer three years ago, and has so far raised more than £3,000.

A precious memory of a trip to Weston

Panto icon Andy Ford Left, Charlotte and her mum Rosemarie On 5th December 2018 Rosemarie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and she died just over a fortnight later on 23rd December. Ms Skuse, who works in social care admin, said: “When my mum was initially diagnosed we thought we’d raise money for her to have a procedure or drugs not available on the NHS. “Because she died very quickly there wasn’t any time for this so we’ve been raising funds ever since to help other people with pancreatic cancer. “It was a cancer I hadn’t really heard much about but it’s a lot more common than I thought. When I’m running fundraising events lots of people come up and tell me that they’ve lost relatives to pancreatic cancer too.” Rosemarie’s death was all the more difficult to deal with because for 13 years anxiety prevented her from leaving the house. It was only after illness meant she ended up in intensive care that she got a new lease of life and felt able to get out and

about again. Ms Skuse said: “When she was recovering in hospital she told us her favourite place was the beach in Weston. “She said that when she got out she wanted to go there. From then on she left the house nearly every day. We went to beaches, shops, to the panto and over to Wales. “We even got matching tattoos for Mum, me and my sisters. “I missed out on so much

when I was younger because we could never go places and I felt like I’d finally got my mum back. So losing her just over a year later was even more traumatic.” To remember their mother, Ms Skuse and her siblings go to the panto at the Bristol Hippodrome every 23rd December. As luck would have it, when they went last month the star act was Andy Ford so they’ve seen him perform live just ahead of the Longwell Green event. Ms Skuse said: “The most I’ve ever raised from one event is £500, so as long as I raise more than that from this event, after I’ve paid Andy’s fee, I’ll be happy. “We’ve got the venue until midnight and there’ll be a bar as well as cakes and snacks too. Hopefully it will be a great night.” Tickets for the show are available at: bit.ly/Andy-Ford

Pedalling and falling into a peat bog - all for you, Pudsey! Rowena Combe, left, and her brother Alistair, right, who both undertook challenges to raise money for Children in Need A SISTER and brother from Longwell Green both set themselves physical challenges to raise funds for Children in Need. Rowena Combe, eight, completed a 26-mile cycle ride, the longest route she had ever ridden. The Longwell Green primary school pupil rode to Midford via the Bristol to Bath railway path and the Two Tunnels Greenway, returning along the Kennet and Avon canal path.

In honour of the day, she sported Pudsey Bear ears on top of her cycle helmet. Despite it being late October, she decided to stop for an unseasonal icecream on the way home. Brother Alistair, 11, who attends Sir Bernard Lovell Academy, completed the southern Pen y Fan circular walk. The 10-mile hike took in four summits in the Brecon Beacons: Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

During the 700m ascent he was lucky enough to enjoy great weather, although he did have the misfortune of accidentally falling into a peat bog. This isn’t the first time the pair have risen to the Children in Need fundraising challenge. For the past three years, they’ve set themselves a challenge to raise money for the charity. Their proud mum Martine, who accompanied both children on their challenges, said they’d

chosen the challenges themselves as something that would really stretch them. They both did incredibly well. I’m proud of their resilience as well as the fact that they decided to challenge themselves rather than sit on the sofa playing video games. “We are an active family so they are used to pacing themselves and keeping going even when things are tough.” Between them they raised £360 for the charity.

Ofsted hails school's improvement SIR Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common is celebrating after being upgraded to Good by the education watchdog Ofsted. The inspectors’ report reflects the continuing improvement of the secondary school. SBL was placed in special measures by the education watchdog in 2014 and became an academy a year later. Six months after Dean Anderson took over as principal, Ofsted removed the inadequate rating but said the school still required improvement. The school says the new judgement of good is a recognition of the hard work of staff, students, parents and carers and the support provided to SBL by its governors and the Futura Learning Partnership. Mr Anderson said: “We have worked hard as a team to build our reputation in our community, and we are proud of how our students have responded. “It is important that a community can be proud of its school and from the start we have had the aspiration that SBL will be the school of choice for children that grow up in this area. The increase in student numbers and this successful Ofsted inspection indicates that we are moving in the right direction. This is a great outcome for all involved with our

Dean Anderson and sudents school and community.” The two-day Ofsted inspection took place in early November and was carried out by a team of four, led by Her Majesty’s Inspector Susan Aykin. Their report included many positive comments about students’ attitudes and behaviour and noted the high and consistent expectations from staff. It said children enjoyed coming to school and had strong relationships with staff, which made them feel safe. “Leaders … have created a very strong culture within the school where the wellbeing and safety of pupils are given the

utmost importance,” the inspectors said. The report praised the curriculum, which it said enabled children to develop strong knowledge across subjects. Other opportunities, including sports and creative clubs were also highlighted. It also said the sixth-form curriculum was well-structured and students were supported to achieve well. The benefit for leaders and staff from working with other schools in Futura Learning Partnership was acknowledged. Inspectors said the next steps, to enable the academy to improve further, should be to help students with special educational needs and disabilities develop literacy skills so they can learn well in all subjects and to improve personal and social education to prepare students for life in the 21st century. Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Futura Learning Partnership, which SBL joined in 2015, said: “I am delighted that the dedication and hard work of everyone at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy has been rewarded with this excellent report." Malcolm Broad, chair of trustees, said: "This well earned Ofsted judgement reflects the dedicated hard work of the principal, Dean Anderson, and all his staff, especially set against the pandemic background.”

Star Stephen welcomes library visitors PEOPLE visiting libraries in Hanham and Kingswood will hear a familiar voice if they use the Open Access service when the building is not staffed. Actor and comedian Stephen Merchant, whose TV series The Outlaws was recently a hit for BBC 1, has recorded a number of announcements for the council’s Library service, along with a video highlighting the importance of libraries, which can be found on the council's YouTube channel. The Hanham-born star made the video and recordings after bumping into a manager on a visit to a local library and said he wanted to highlight the library's "power to change lives through reading". Stephen said: "I was more than willing to support South Gloucestershire Libraries. "The service has so much to offer – access to computers, a meeting place to connect with

your community, somewhere to study and if you want to find out anything then the library is the place to go. "But above all these great services, it’s their power to change lives through reading. I would encourage everyone to use their local library.” A council spokesperson said Stephen had recorded "bespoke audio content" in the form of announcements for the libraries’ Open Access service, which enables users to visit the library seven days per week. Council cabinet member for communities Rachael Hunt said: "It was really kind of Stephen to record the announcements and the video. "We want our libraries to be welcoming places, and having a well-known friendly voice with a very recognisable local accent is brilliant. "Hearing his voice will bring a smile to our users' faces – even

Stephen Merchant on the video when he tells them that the library hours are ending for the day!" The open Access scheme allows people to access most

libraries in South Gloucestershire when staff are not on duty, between the house of 8am and 7.30pm. The council says more than 100,000 visits have been made using the system since it was introduced. During lockdown libraries increased online services and made visits to more than 450 people who could not leave their homes. The service has been returning to normal over the past few months. To hear Stephen, just visit a South Gloucestershire Library and ask the staff about registering for the Open Access service to use the libraries seven days a week. Majestics help TeamGB take gold GYMNASTS from Longwell Green have made history as part of the first GB team to become TeamGym European Champions. Four competitors and a coach from Majestic Gymnastics were selected to represent their country at the European Championships in Guimaraes, Portugal. Stacey Godden was unit lead coach for the mixed junior team, which included Majestic member Paige Phillips. The team won first place and as a result became the European Champions. Ms Godden also coached the mixed senior team, including Majestic members Katie Iles and James Langley, which came second. The final Majestic gymnast was Larissa Royal, part of the junior women’s team, who qualified for the finals and earned Great

Britain’s first bronze medal in this category. The competitors flew over to Portugal accompanied by coaches from Majestic as well as their relatives. Great Britain has only won one medal at the European Championships before, in the junior men’s category.

Majestic Gymnastics’ current location in Aldermoor Way may be razed to the ground as part of a new development and the club is desperately trying to find out what will happen to their facilities. Club director Candice Littleton said: “Majestic Gymnastics are extremely proud to have these gymnasts and coaches as part of our club. To achieve these results is a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work and dedication to the sport. “The club itself is still in the process of fighting for a new home as our current venue is due for demolition in September 2022. South Glos Council are currently looking into options to rehome the club. “After the success of these championships, these gymnasts need a home to train in and prepare for Luxembourg 2022.”

Cribs collection boosts charity

A SPECTACULAR collection of 450 nativity sets attracted hundreds of visitors in Kingswood. The displays have been collected by resident Jackie Elliott, 74, during her travels around the world. Every year she lets the public view her collection at St Michael the Archangel church, Two Mile Hill, to raise funds for the cancer support group she runs. Jackie set up the Gastro/ Oesophageal Support and Help Cancer Group, or GOSH Bristol, with her husband, John. She said: “My husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2004 and had a

successful operation to treat it. “The surgeons began referring other people to John to talk to, so we thought we’d set up a meeting for other people with stomach and oesophageal cancers. We thought it would be a few of us having a drink and a chat. “Ninety people turned up to that first meeting.” The husband-and-wife team started running the bimonthly meetings, which are attended by people from as far away as Yeovil and Swindon. Jackie said: “The nearest similar group is in Birmingham so there’s a huge need for our group.” She began displaying her

small collection of nativity sets, bought for her own home and her children, at the church Christmas fair. She then had the idea of running an event to raise money for GOSH Bristol. She said: “John and I decided to travel as much as possible after he’d had his operation, to make

symptoms, treatments and so on. “I’ve carried on collecting the nativity sets while travelling with a friend. When we display them at the church, lit with candles and with music playing, the atmosphere is wonderful.” The 2021 nativity display was

the first for three years, because of Covid restrictions in 2020 and a leak in the church roof in 2019. Jackie, who is recovering from a recent hip replacement, this month faces the long task of boxing up each set to store ready for next Christmas. By then, she hopes to add

even more to her collection. She said: “I’m travelling to Iceland this year, so I’m hoping that they’ll have some interesting nativity sets. I’m also going to Oberammergau in Germany and taking my grandchildren to Lapland, so I’m sure I’ll find some more sets to add to the collection. “It’s a bit of an obsession. If I see a set I haven’t already got, I have to buy it.” Visitors to the display donated £700. The money will be used to fund GOSH Bristol’s hall hire costs, subsidising travel for those who need it and be put towards social events such as trips to the Hippodrome. GOSH Bristol is held at the Park Centre on the last Tuesday of every other month. The next meeting takes place on 25 January from 7 to 9pm. Hopes of leisure centre at Kings Chase car park PLANS for a new leisure centre in Kingswood are being taken forward as part of a major revamp of the town’s high street. South Gloucestershire Council has approved a feasibility study into building a new leisure centre at the back of the Kings Chase shopping centre. The decision was among moves signed off by the Conservative administration on December 13 to progress the £25million redevelopment of Kingswood High Street. Plans include the pedestrianisation of part of Regent Street and the restoration of the Grade-I listed Whitfield Tabernacle. A new public park will be created from the cemetery of the Grade-II listed Masters Church, which sits beside the tabernacle and is being privately developed by Crossman Homes as 19 apartments, cabinet papers show. A public consultation held earlier this year, after the council revealed it had bought the

Kings Chase shopping centre for £10million, included proposals for a Kings Chase redevelopment with a new leisure centre, a cinema, apartments and office/ hot-desk hub. Public feedback showed “a strong appetite for a new leisure centre and for a mix of uses in a Kings Chase redevelopment”, according to the cabinet report. If the leisure centre is deemed feasible, it will replace the old council-owned Kingswood Leisure Centre outside the town centre at Soundwell. According to a provisional design, the new Kingswood Leisure Centre would occupy around 37,000sq ft created by partly demolishing the multistorey car park immediately behind Sainsbury’s. Officers note the car park is “seldom more than one third occupied” and that it would be possible to provide extra decked car parking elsewhere on site. Cabinet members approved the feasibility study and gave

officers the green light to publish a final masterplan for the Kingswood regeneration, which is expected to come back to cabinet next spring. The meeting heard that the public response to the draft masterplan was “overwelmingly positive”. A cabinet report summarising the findings of the 12-week consultation said: “The most consistent message fed back to officers was ‘it’s about time’. “There was a feeling that Kingswood has been neglected for too long and is in need of transformational investment.” Concerns remain among residents and traders about the impact of pedestrianising Regent Street and re-routing traffic through a northbound diversion, however, the report shows. Council leader Toby Savage pointed out that the restoration of the Whitfield Tabernacle was already underway. “The scaffolding is up, a roof is being added, the building is

being secured,” he said. “When we talk about masterplans, it’s so important that residents see that these aren’t just another council document to gather dust on the shelf.” Cllr Savage said the tabernacle will be “restored to its former glory” during the final £2m restoration phase, which got the green light from cabinet on December 13. It is expected to open within 18 months as a cultural centre hosting a heritage, education and arts programme. The Kingswood masterplan has been in development since summer 2019.The £25 million project is being funded by £12.5million of government Future High Streets funding, £8m of match funding from the West of England Combined Authority, and £5m of proposed borrowing from the council’s investment fund. Mum and daughter face chop LOCKDOWN locks will be put to good use after a mother and daughter teamed up to donate their hair to charity. Leanne and Angela Harbury both work at Cherry Garden primary school in Bitton. During the recurrent lockdowns their hair grew from shoulder length to half way down their backs. Leanne, 49, a Year 2 teacher who has been at the school for 16 years, said they wanted to do something worthwhile with their extra hair. She said: “All the hairdressers shut so it got long, then I put kept putting off getting it cut, until it got really long. “We decided to donate to the Little Princess Trust so that something worthwhile could happen with our hair.” The charity makes wigs from real hair for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment or other conditions. Angela and Leanne both got

30cm cut off at the outdoor play area of the Reception class one night after school, with fellow teachers watching. Angela, 24, has been a TA at the school for three years and was previously a pupil there. She said: “It felt very strange to suddenly have shorter hair. I’ll be running my fingers through

my hair and be surprised when there’s nothing left to run them through. “It’s nice to know that we got our hair cut for a good reason.” The pair are now raising funds to cover the cost of the charity turning their hair into wigs: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/leanne-harbury

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI IT has been so good for the WI to meet up again at our monthly meetings and catch up with friends we haven't seen for a while. The November meeting was our AGM when we vote in the president, officers and committee for the coming year – and more importantly enjoy wine and cheese! After the official business, Anne Bennett, our WI Advisor, handed out long-membership awards to the longest serving members. There were 10 certificates in all – all given to those who had been members for 25 years or more. Our longest standing member is Jean Blake who has been a member for 49 years – quite an achievement – and five ladies have been members for more than 40 years. This is something new and in future certificates will be given to all those who are members for 25 years. After the AGM business we had a really interesting talk from Andy Stowe from East Bristol Auctions on 100 years of toys. He had brought some examples of toys through the decades with him and it was quite a trip down memory lane for a lot of us. He reminded us of the origins of the teddy bear and how the toy market moved in line with what was happening in the world – toy soldiers in wartime for example. Dinky cars, Barbie dolls, electronic games, space themed toys, Star Wars and Lego were all mentioned. Also at this meeting members brought along Christmas gifts and toiletries for women’s refuges and food items for Juice. As always the members were extremely generous and the pile of gifts was huge! Members enjoyed a trip to Blenheim Palace where the house was decorated on the Nutcracker theme. Members very generously brought gifts for the Christmas Tree Appeal, which distributes them to women and children in local refuges. There were enough gifts to fill two car boots! Longwell Green WI also delivered several bags of food to Juice for them to make Christmas hampers. Our members had a good time at our Christmas party where we had a sit down meal and entertainment from Karen Kennedy. We are having fun and games at our January meeting and we have a range of interesting speakers booked for 2022. Most of our sub-groups are now meeting again. Our members can participate in three Book Clubs, Craft Club, Walking Group, Knitting group, Drama Group, Skittles Group and regular Social Suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30 at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 9864782. Sandra Hill and Linda Muller

n PROBUS CLUB

Starting over LONGWELL Green Probus Mens Club is moving! After 33 years at the Longwell Green Community Centre ( now rebranded as ‘The Centre’) rising costs have forced us, somewhat reluctantly, to find a new meeting place. After a careful search for local premises offering all the facilities we need for a successful and thriving club we have agreed a move to Warmley Community Centre who have welcomed us with open arms. Sadly our numbers have dropped a little during the Pandemic and we are now actively seeking new members so, if you or anyone you know are recently retired or approaching retirement and you/they are not ready for your pipe and slippers, we’d love to hear from you so we can tell you all about us. We want to put together an interesting and exciting programme for 2022 and we are looking for guys who can help us achieve this. Although nominally a mens club, we include our ladies in all our holidays and events and we have several special Ladies lunches during the year and we are always looking for new ideas. If you would like to know more please contact our Vice President, Neil, on his mobile 07837946084 or email him at neilmattock@btinternet.com and he will be happy to give you more details.

Petition demands return of No18 bus A 1,000-NAME petition to resurrect a “lifeline” bus service axed in the summer has been submitted to regional transport chiefs. The number 18 from Kingswood to Bath via Keynsham was withdrawn when the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) decided not to renew the contract with First after reviewing its financial support, with Metro Mayor Dan Norris blaming massive cuts in government funding. It sparked outrage from passengers and local politicians, who say the route is vital to rural communities, and they began a campaign to reinstate the service, which included stops at Bitton, Oldland Common, Longwell Green and Warmley. South Gloucestershire Council cabinet member Cllr Erica Williams presented the petition to the Weca committee on Friday, December 3, calling on the combined authority to reverse its withdrawal of subsidies for the 18. She told the meeting at Keynsham civic centre that the route was axed “without warning”. “This was done with absolutely no public consultation, with none of the users of the service, many people like myself who do not drive, and many who are making a conscious choice to use more sustainable forms of transport such as buses,” Cllr Williams said. “At no point were these residents of South

Bus campaigners Councillors Paul Hughes and Erica Williams with MP Chris Skidmore Gloucestershire given an opportunity to have their say on how important the service was to them. “What was even more concerning was the fact that after the service was scrapped, little to no effort went into communicating this to the public. “I have lost count of the number of people who I have spoken to or have seen comment on social media that they were left waiting at bus stops for buses that never came. “Is this the kind of transport authority Weca is, which makes ill-informed, snap

decisions without consulting or informing the people such decisions will heavily impact?” She said the petition was backed by fellow Bitton and Oldland Common ward Conservative Cllr Paul Hughes and Kingswood Tory MP Chris Skidmore. Cllr Williams said the decision to scrap the route was based on passenger numbers but this was a “flawed practice” because these had still not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. “We should be finding ways to support the services that connect our communities and prevent them from becoming more isolated,” she said. The councillor said that despite securing hundreds of millions of pounds from the chancellor in the recent budget and spending review, there was still no indication the service would be revived. Mr Norris replied: “You know I won’t completely agree with what you’ve said because it’s to do with the pandemic and changes of funding by central government. That’s why I’ve got the support of the Kingswood MP in the past and hopefully shortly as well to get more resources because I agree with you, we should be able to keep these important bus services going. “The difficulty is how we fund those if money is being taken away from us.” By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporter

Action urged to protect local routes SOUTH Gloucestershire's three MPs have called for a meeting with the government over funding for bus services. Chris Skidmore, Luke Hall and Jack Lopresti have all signed a letter to Baroness Vere to raise concerns over the prospect of a reduction in service levels after the transition between two forms of government support for bus operators – the current Bus Recovery Grant and the incoming Bus Transformation Fund – which is due to happen in April 2022. The MPs have told the minister: "We would like to request an urgent meeting with you to discuss how the Department for Transport can help protect our local bus services and manage the current mismatch between operators’ costs and actual revenue." The MPs say they are concerned that, while the

£3 billion Bus Transformation Fund announced by the Chancellor in October would improve infrastructure, fares and services, it "may not be used to support existing bus services that cease to be viable when the Bus Recovery Grant ends". The MPs said they were urging the West of England Combined Authority, which has strategic responsibility for services in the region, "to prioritise the provision of bus services for local people over bureaucracy". Metro Mayor Dan Norris, who is in charge of the authority, raised concerns in November that, after collapsing during the pandemic, bus passenger numbers had only reached 70 per cent of the equivalent period in 2019 and were unlikely to pass 80 per cent of pre-Covid levels by the time the new funding arrangements are introduced.

Mr Norris warned that the Bus Transformation Fund "will not be able to be used to subsidise services that are not commercially viable" and said operators were planning "extensive reductions in service levels and withdrawals" if they did not receive new government support. He wrote to the government to ask for an extension of the Bus Recovery Grant or for alternative funding to be put in place to cover the shortfall between operators’ costs and actual revenue. Mr Norris said: "I do not have the resources locally to save the buses we need to save. Unless the Government act there will be huge disruption to passengers and there is a risk of irreparable damage to our local bus network." The Labour mayor had asked all local MPs to agree a joint

letter. While the Conservative MPs had written their own, the Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs in Bristol and Bath had signed a letter to Baroness Vere and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. The letter from Mr Norris and the Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs said: "We urge you to extend the Bus Recovery Grant or to put alternative funding in place to cover the shortfall between operators’ costs and actual revenue, until such time as passenger numbers recover to a sufficient level that will sustain a viable commercial operation." A DfT spokesperson said Baroness Vere would reply to the MPs shortly their request for a meeting. He said the department was "in close contact" with transport bodies but the Government "wishes to see the sector return to financial viability".

Water butt's a winner! A WINNING water butt will take pride of place in Cadbury Heath primary school’s playground. Children from Otter class, the school’s nurture group, won a Bristol-wide competition to encourage sustainability. The Bristol Water Foundation sent out 131 water butts to schools that requested them. More than 50 of those schools decorated their water butts and submitted photos to be assessed by the judges. Otter class decided their theme was “around the world” and teacher Ria Chapman spray painted the base before the children added pictures of themselves holding hands. Then they got creative with feathers, googly eyes, lollipop sticks, pipe cleaners and beads. As overall winners of the competition they have won £150 of book vouchers, which will be used to buy books around social and emotional skills and mental health to support the nurture group, as well as more general books for the school as a whole. The school’s inclusion lead and special

Work in progress on the design, left, paid off when the finished water butt, right, was chosen by Bristol Water Foundation as the winning entry needs coordinator, Toni Slater, said the children were delighted with their success in the competition. She said: “Our nurture group is quite small, with just four pupils, and it was great to get them all working together on a joint project. We used it as a chance to work on resilience and managing disappointment if they didn’t win, but they were over the moon that they won. “The water butt will be positioned outside

under one of our overhangs to help it survive the weather.” A spokesperson for the Bristol Water Foundation said: “With over 50 entries, the judging was tough. We were very impressed with the amount of detail [on the Otter class water butt] and particularly enjoyed the ‘round the world’ theme. “The children holding hands were especially cute. Plus, who doesn’t love a googly eye?”

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

New Year heralds a greener future THERE is still much uncertainty about the worrying Omicron covid variant spreading among our communities. It remains hugely important to take up booster jabs when offered them, and to continue to wear masks in shops and on public transport. Here in the West of England I am proud we have led the country in this sensible approach since last summer and I believe it has saved countless lives locally. In the best traditions of our wonderful region and nation, let’s continue to look out for each other in 2022. January is a time to make plans and New Year’s resolutions but, importantly, also a time for us to think about our own well-being. This month is ‘National Walk Your Dog month.’ If your dog is anything like my working cocker spaniel, Angel, they will implore you for long walks on at least a daily basis! It’s a great way of getting exercise, fresh air and doing something that’s really good for our

mental health. Across the West of England there are some fantastic forests, woodland and open spaces to go for walks – my personal favourites being around the beautiful rail viaducts in both Winterbourne and Pensford. On the subject of green spaces, I was delighted that the flagship £50 million Green Recovery Fund that I pledged in my manifesto was finally voted through in December – and without any strings attached. This was my green promise to you in last May’s election and it is key to our region meeting our ambitious target of net-zero by 2030. It’s going to deliver key projects like retrofitting homes to make them more energy efficient, installing more charging points for electric cars and creating biodiversity schemes to help bees and other pollinators. So my New Year’s resolution to you is to continue to be the strong champion our region needs and deserves – from backing our worldclass food and drink producers, to our creative

industries and our thriving tech and aerospace sectors. I want to deliver a public transport network that our region can be really proud of, and to that end I was delighted to launch half-hourly rail services between Severn Beach and Temple Meads, and am proud to promise there are more transport improvements across our region further down the track this year. So whether you’re doing dry January, ‘Veganuary’ or taking up a new hobby, I wish you and your loved ones a very safe January and 2022.

n WHAT'S ON

n ANTIQUES

It's only rock and roll ...

At a valuation day we held late last year in Hanham Community Centre, I was astonished at the amount of music memorabilia that turned up. Within an hour of opening our doors, I’d seen autographs from some of the most recognisable names in the business – David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and even Status Quo! All obtained by eager music fans in the 70s and 80s at concerts in the local area. All of these autographs are worth good sums of money, and can often sell for hundreds under the gavel. But one item in particular is worthy of a special mention. One customer came to my table, with a small brown envelope. Within this envelope was a signed photograph of The Rolling Stones – looking very much younger than you’d expect! The Stones and The Beatles are, of course, the two most famous bands on the planet, and early memorabilia from their heyday is often worth a small fortune. Back in 2019 we actually broke the world record for a Rolling Stones poster advertising the final night of their UK tour at the Colston Hall in 1964– sold for a whopping £15,000. This signed photograph had been obtained by the client’s relative who had worked as a St John’s Ambulance person at the Colston Hall, very likely during that same concert in 1964. For some reason, they decided to get the band’s autographs despite apparently not really knowing who they were, and also never obtaining any other signatures while working at such events. The signed photo was in remarkable condition and clearly signed by all present – including the Cheltenham born Brian Jones who died very early on in 1969, and the recently deceased Charlie Watts. In Stones terms, it doesn’t really get more special than this - a signed photo of the band, on the cusp of stardom. We placed the autograph in our specialist auction with an estimate of £800 -£1200. It sold for £1,700 to a collector in Scotland. Andrew Stowe

n PHARMACY BLOG

Positive lifestyle changes for 2022 JANUARY is traditionally the time to take stock and decide on positive changes to improve health, wellbeing, and relationships. What is the secret to success when adopting such changes? The first coronavirus lockdown was a catalyst for many people to make changes, especially as people sought to take advantage of the exercise freedoms allowed during the pandemic. Adoption of coping mechanisms for loneliness and isolation while also having more time at hand with less commuting and being furloughed from work, reviving old and finding new interests boomed. The statistics are very compelling as 1.3 million Brits bought a bike during the first lockdown. Research released in April 2020 by Sport England showed that 59% of adults were walking as their daily activity, 44% of people were doing a homebased exercise (including online workouts and home-based fitness

classes – thanks, Joe Wicks!). Sadly, this Sport England research also showed the inequality prevalent even in seeking positive change. People finding it harder to be regularly active - included older people, those on a low income and those living in urban areas. A 2021 Public Health England survey provided a scorecard. After that initial surge in positive activity, enthusiasm waned. It wasn't good. One in three people reported snacking on unhealthy food and drinks at least once a day (35%) – up from 26% the previous year. Data showed an increase of around 15% in sales of take-home snack foods, including confectionery and biscuits. A third also said they were exercising less (30%) in the latter half of 2020. Why do People fail at these changes? Misappropriating enjoyment and importance as mutually significant factors for successful change for example is one reason. Research shows

enjoyment was the only thing that mattered when adopting change. Other reasons include wrong ideas about willpower and the timescales needed for adopting new behavioural patterns. Every time we exercise self-control, e.g., saying no to desert, it becomes easier next time. Remember it can take up to 66 days to form a new habit - don't give up! So, what is the road to success? Good tips include focusing on developing good habits rather than just meeting goals, for example: ‘‘I want to exercise/eat better every day rather than lose 15kg in 8 weeks." To stay motivated, celebrate even the smallest positive changes. Research shows that immediate rewards from new habits help us stick to them. Embrace self-compassion and avoid perfectionism. Don't compare yourself to that person on Tik Tok! Be kind and supportive of yourself as you would a friend or child. Self-criticism is actually

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

How much more should we pay for policing? AS your PCC, I am responsible for setting the amount of money that residents – you – contribute to local policing through the council tax, known as the precept. It’s that time of year again where PCCs up and down the country will need to make a decision whether or not to increase the precept, and the impact this will have on local people. Before making this decision, I want to hear from communities and find out your views about this potential increase. So, I have launched a survey asking if you would be willing to pay an increase in the policing part of the council tax. Why is an increase needed? Local policing is funded by a combination of Home Office and other grants, as well as council tax contributions. In 2022/23, the Home Office grant funding is increasing to fund additional

officers as part of Operation Uplift but this is not enough to manage inflationary pressures, like pay rises for police officers. The Government has told PCCs that they can raise the precept next year by £10 for an average band D household. A £10 increase, approximately 83p per month, would mean any savings that still need to be made would be less likely to impact frontline services. If the policing part of the council tax is not increased, the force would have to make significant savings, resulting in a reduction of services that would impact our communities. As your PCC, I have to balance the challenges facing policing with local people’s views in order to best resource an efficient and effective police service that can keep people safe. However, I know that any increase in household bills is

felt by local people. This is why I want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to tell me their thoughts and opinions before I make any decision regarding an increase. The survey can be completed via the PCC website at www. avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk/ about/police-tax-survey/ If you need a paper version please contact the team on 01278 646188. I’m sure many of you will be shopping online over January to make the most of the New Year sales. I want to take a moment to remind you to take extra care when shopping on the internet and ensure you do not fall victim to online shopping fraud. We need to ensure that criminals do not take advantage of our online shopping habits and, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are numerous ways

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford online shoppers can protect themselves online including: using a payment method that offers protection such as a credit card, using a strong separate password for your email account and watching out for phishing emails and texts. More advice on how to stay safe online can be found on Action Fraud’s website.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

2022 will be a great year for our area HAVING left 2021 behind, we can look ahead to 2022 with great optimism. As the local MP, I am looking forward to the opportunities presented to our area over the coming year. As we continue to manage the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and gradually exit the pandemic, it is important that we continue to put in place the foundations for our economic, social and environmental recovery so we can build back better and greener from the pandemic. We can expect a decision on creating a new Kingswood Town Council, as well as continued regeneration of the town centre – as set out in South Gloucestershire Council’s Masterplan. The council’s purchase of the Kings Chase Shopping Centre in

2021 means that the multi-storey car park area can be considered as the location of a new leisure centre and we can expect a consultation from the council on the details on what a new centre would look like and the services and facilities it would offer the community. My campaign to introduce free car parking will continue so we can attract more shoppers to the area. The restoration of our historic Whitfield Tabernacle will move into its final £2million phase, the conversion of the Masters Church into new homes will finish and a new park will be handed over to the community - these are just some of the heritage improvements to our local area that 2022 will see. Alongside submitting a multimillion pound lottery bid for Kingswood Park, our environment

will be further boosted through the exciting new Common Connections initiative led by SGC. This is a £1million four-year landscape and habitat restoration project to improve links between registered common land, woodlands and other natural habitats to create a Wildbelt - an area of land where building is not allowed, so that nature can be protected and restored stretching from Lyde Green southwards to Willsbridge. 2022 will also be a year to grab the exciting local opportunities we know are coming – not least in the hi-tech businesses in our local economy. I was reminded of these when visiting the National Composites Centre (NCC) at the Science Park. The NCC is next door to the new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems currently under construction

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice and which will open later this year in providing yet more opportunities for local people to help solve global challenges. I wish you a Happy New Year.
