Frankie's latest £1m campaign Charity fundraiser Frankie Johns is on a new mission - to raise £1m for Dementia UK in memory of his mother-in-law.

High Street is set fair for some seasonal fun HANHAM residents are being urged to come out and support the area's first High Street summer fair. Buoyed by the success of the Christmas fair, traders have rallied round to put the wheels in motion for a similar event - this time hopefully in the sunshine. The event will feature market and street food stalls, fun fair rides for children and entertainment for the family. Newcomers to the street,

Nicola Bartlett and Carl Smith from the Eclectic Gift Shop, have been working with 54a Hair and Beauty, John Wood's Cycle Repair Centre, Chris Skidmore MP office staff and Flawless Nails and Beauty to organise the free not-for-profit community event. Nicola told Hanham & Longwell Green Voice: "I was so impressed with the Christmas fair organised by the Hanham Business and Community Partnership, that I asked for

their help to organise one in the summer. We love Hanham and it's fantastic to give something back to the local community." The summer fair is free to attend and takes place in the High Street on Saturday July 14 from 2-5pm. There are a limited number of spaces left for local traders, so if you would like a stall, please contact Carl by emailing hanhamhighstreetevents@gmail. com

Pre-school wins praise Success at Ofsted STAFF at a Hanham pre-school are giving themselves a wellearned pat on the back after receiving a glowing Ofsted report. Inspectors visited Hanham Toddlers Pre-School, based at the Methodist church in Chapel Road, and judged it to be 'Good' in four out of five categories. In the personal development, behaviour and welfare category, inspectors gave an 'Outstanding' rating. Inspectors said teaching was "strong throughout" and children's behaviour "excellent". The pre-school was praised for its strong partnerships with parents with staff helping parents to continue their children's reading at home. "Staff understand how children learn and develop. They know how to observe and assess children's progress and how to identify any gaps in their development". The strong focus on promoting literacy and maths skills means children make good progress. Staff make excellent use of the garden, giving children a variety of opportunities to learn outdoors. Children demonstrate very high levels of confidence in their social skills and follow routines extremely well. They are also well motivated and eager learners: "They persevere and are willing to have a go at things that challenge them." The report added: "All children make good progress in their learning and develop skills in preparation for the next stage in learning and eventual move to school." Manager Lorraine Bunting said: "Myself and my team are delighted with the report and wish to thank all of our parents and carers for the wonderful support they give. Staff work very hard to provide excellent care and education for the children and it's great this has been recognised by Ofsted."

A HANHAM primary school has maintained its 'Good' rating following a short inspection by education watchdog Ofsted. Inspectors returned to Christ Church Hanham C of E Primary in May following a visit in June 2014 when they judged it to be 'Good'. They say there is no change to its overall effectiveness grade but have highlighted areas the school should follow to further boost standards. The report said leaders had not been quick enough to prevent a decline in pupils' writing outcomes which meant the Key Stage 2 progress scores in 2017 were in the lowest 10 per cent nationally. However they say current leaders are working effectively to tackle this. Teachers make lessons fun and 97 per cent of parents would recommend the school to others, the report said.

"Pupils show good attitudes to learning in lessons. They are enthusiastic and make positive contributions through responding well to questions and working together to help each other." Staff are "diligent" in safeguarding pupils, who say they feel safe at the school: "They have trust in the staff's ability to deal swiftly with any rare incidents of anti-social behaviour or bullying." The school has been told it must improve the quality of pupils' writing and teachers should plan pupils' next steps "precisely" to meet their needs, especially those of lowerattaining pupils and those with special educational needs. They should also raise the achievement of disadvantaged children so they are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.

n NEWS A CHARITY fundraiser who has collected thousands of pounds for Help for Heroes has turned his attentions on a new cause following a family death. Singer Frankie Johns, whose real name is John Billitteri, has launched his most ambitious venture to date - to collect 1,000,000 pound coins for the charity Dementia UK. It follows the death of Frankie's motherin-law Barbara Fudge, 81, who spent her final days at Saffron Gardens in Whitehall where she received support from Dementia UK. Frankie, 59, said: "I've been fundraising for Help for Heroes for nine years, including the million penny challenge. I succeeded in what I'd set out to do so when I lost my mother-in-law on March 21, I felt I should perhaps turn my attention to a charity which really helped Barbara. "I sing in care homes in Bristol so I've worked with a lot of people with dementia and see what they go through day to day. It's definitely a very good cause as their nurses do such amazing work. "The charity works in care homes and provides Barbara Fudge specially trained

He's one in a million - and now he wants to raise £1m Admiral nurses to support families affected by dementia. They were fantastic while Barbara was at Saffron Gardens and my fundraising is also to say thank you for the support and care they gave her. "Years ago people wouldn't talk about dementia; it felt as though it was swept under the carpet but today it's much more open which is a good thing as so many people are affected by it. "Help for Heroes was a charity that felt really close to my heart; Dementia UK is also a charity close to my heart." Frankie, who lives in Kingswood, was known for touring the city with his bike and trailer emblazoned with Help for Heroes signs. He will now do the same for Dementia UK. "I'm going to try to raise £1,000,000. It might take me five years, but I'm determined to do it." Frankie smashed his one million pennies target in December when he reached 1,018,784 pennies - or £10,187.84. He promised his wife Julie he would have six months off to spend some quality time

with his family, including mother-in-law Barbara. Now Frankie is raring to go, and, given his latest cause, Julie is right behind him promising to support him however she can. Frankie has raised more than £70,000 over the years for Help for Heroes, a charity supporting British service men and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty. Among his list of fundraising achievements are climbing Kilimanjaro, a Bristol to London bike ride and a daredevil skydive. His most popular campaign was his million pennies campaign where he cycled round the city, encouraging people to throw their unwanted change into his trailer. His fundraising prowess hasn't gone unnoticed - he was nominated for a Pride of Britain award in the Fundraiser of the Year category, which although he didn't win, he said was a huge honour. Frankie's first fundraiser for Dementia UK will be a family affair when relatives and close friends take on a 5k walk across

Frankie Johns takes on his biggest challenge the Downs on July 8. Frankie hasn't opened the event up to members of the public as he wanted to use the walk as an opportunity for those close to Barbara to remember her and pay tribute. He said: "It's just for family in friends in memory of Barbara but I am planning another walk which will be open to everyone

to take part." Among family joining Frankie with be wife Julie, 57, daughters Charmaine, 32, and Marisa, 30, and grandchildren and Colby, eight, Kemper, six, Luciano, two, Quinn, nearly two, and newborn Milana. Frankie is also getting to grips with social media for the first time after his daughters told him he would need to embrace modern technology if he is to ever reach his ambitious target. With help from Charmaine, Frankie has now set up a JustGiving page for online donations (go to www.justgiving.com and search for Frankie Johns). People can also get in touch with him via his Facebook page (John Billitteri) or by ringing him on 07775 870129 if they would prefer to make a direct donation. Future charity events include an entertainment evening at Kingswood Community Centre on Saturday September 1. Tickets will be available soon from the club or from getting in touch directly with Frankie. Frankie said: "I've done a lot for Help for Heroes and now I want to support Dementia UK in memory of my mother-in-law and in support of the men and women I see daily who suffer with dementia. It's a charity which is worth supporting so I can give them the help that they need to do their amazing work. "It's the biggest challenge I've ever taken on, but I know I will do it."

Designs will be drawn up for the old 4.8 acre Soundwell College site including vocational areas for engineering, vehicle workshop, hair and beauty and hospitality and catering training. Part of the current premises is likely to be demolished and rebuilt and the rest of the old college refurbished. The school could provide employment for up to 80 staff.

Scheme Children under fire run their A SCHEME to allow people to use libraries using a swipe card is “in danger of hitting the rocks,” it has been claimed. South Gloucestershire Council introduced the Open Access scheme at many libraries in October last year as it cut staff hours by 30 per cent to save £500,000 from its budget. Hanham library did not get Open Access because of constraints of its building but at other sites people who have signed up for the cards can get in seven days a week. But in the first six months of the scheme just one in every seven eligible library users 3,655 in total - had signed up across the authority area. Labour's Councillor Pat Rooney, said only 13 per cent of users had signed up, making the technology a false economy.

own bank ST Barnabas CE Primary in North Common has set up its own bank. It’s part of the LifeSavers scheme, set up by the Archbishop of Canterbury to help children learn the value of money and of saving. It is run by Year 5 children, helped by staff, and has been trialled by Years 3 and 4 with the scheme being opened up for all this month. Each week children bring in the money they want to save, count it and make their deposit into the bank, which is run as a community bank by Bristol Credit Union. Savers are able to withdraw twice a year at the key times of

Christmas and just before the summer holidays. Head teacher Claire Hill said it was vital that children learned the value of money, especially in an era when transactions are widely done online. She said: “Children don’t often see actual cash and this makes it hard for them to understand the value of money. Lifesavers has been a brilliant way to help them understand the value of items and also helps

'A cracking exhibition' of artistic talents LOVERS of art flocked to a popular annual exhibition displaying the talents of members of Hanham Art Club. The event ran from June 4-9 and kicked off with a special launch party where guest of honour was Bristol watercolour artist Tim Wilmot. Tim, a member of the Bristol Savages, an historic society concerned with the pursuit of fine arts, painting, music and poetry, had the difficult task of judging more than 100 entries. Club chair Sue Palmer said: "The opening evening went well with many people attending. I did hear someone say it was a cracking exhibition, which I

thought did it credit. "There were 130 original, framed pictures of many different mediums, of many different subjects, from local landmarks to holiday destinations not to forget those of treasured pets and animals." The art club meets at the Avon Room at Hanham Community Centre on Thursday evenings from 7-9pm, and have a range of artists at all levels. There are a few spaces available for anyone who would like to join, and the club offers free taster sessions. Visit www.hanhamartclub. co.uk to find out more.

Dance group marks birthday by bringing home trophies A POPULAR dance school in Hanham is celebrating 12 years of putting a spring in the step of hundreds of local children. 3D Dance was originally formed in 2006 by Hanham dance teacher Louise Hopton and now involves more than 150 children. They marked their birthday by celebrating success at street dance championships in Cheltenham last weekend. After working on competition routines for several months, all 3D teams bought home medals and trophies including a first place for '3D Energise' who won the 12 and under category and others, beating as many as seven other teams to win the titles. Weekly street dance classes are held in both Hanham and Emersons Green and pupils have participated in hundreds of shows, competitions and performances over the years. Girls and boys aged between four and 16 learn street dance routines in fun, energetic classes and have recently had success at several national competitions around the country. Recent performances include spots at local festivals, fayres, including Hanham Common Fayre, and the Colston Hall. 3D Dance, which has even started some adult classes for parents, also hosts dance workshops and school holiday clubs and are looking forward to holding some this summer. Anyone interested in weekly classes or summer holiday activities, should email Louise louisewelsh160@hotmail.com

School bucks trend 'Tell us about and drops uniform inspiring women' STUDENTS at Digitech Studio School in Warmley have been told they can ditch uniform. Students in Years 10 and 11 will not have to wear school uniform, a policy in line with the school's Post 16 department. The changes are because staff, students and parents believe that non-uniform will suit the ethos and culture of the small creative and media school for 14 to 19-year-olds, opened in 2015. Students will be expected to dress as if they are going on work experience or to an interview for college. PE kit will remain unchanged. The school has laid down some ground rules and have banned hats and hoods, ripped jeans, clothing with slogans or large logos, crop tops and thin leggings. Low cut jeans with underwear showing, low cut or strappy tops, short skirts, flip flops and sandals are also no-go.

Previous dress code was a black or grey suit, white shirt and purple tie. More than 80 per cent of parents surveyed said they thought the school should not have a uniform, although 60 per cent believed there should be a dress code. In a letter to parents, principal Lis Jolley said: "We reserve the right to challenge students on their dress and expect full cooperation from parents and carers if we deem that a student is not dressed appropriately for an educational environment." Ms Jolley told the Voice: "This is a 14-19 school that has a mature college feel. Students currently are dressed for business, but in reality the business dress does not reflect the employers and sectors that we work with where the dress code is much more casual."

PEOPLE have just days left to submit their stories about the achievements of inspirational women from South Gloucestershire who have made a difference to society. Have you been inspired by your mother, aunt, grandmother, someone you are friends with or a work colleague? If they’ve got a powerful connection to the area over the past 100 years South Gloucestershire Council wants to hear from you. The closing date for online entries is Tuesday July 3. Details are on the council website. The new National Lottery funded project is called Inspiring Women: the legacy of the First World War in South Gloucestershire. It will help demonstrate how the events of 1918 have changed women’s lives forever as this was the year that not only marked the end of the war but also saw the Representation of the People Act introduced. The Act allowed some women over the age of 30 the right to vote but it was not until the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 that women over 21 were able to vote and women finally achieved the same voting rights as men. Council chair Rachael Huntsaid: "We are working with various local heritage organisations to research and uncover hidden stories as well as finding artefacts, letters or newspapers. If you can help us by contributing to this legacy, I strongly urge you to start a conversation with your friends and relatives about inspirational women they have known or know and nominate them today."

Adam wins place at leading drama school AN OLDLAND Common man says his dream has come true after gaining a coveted place at one of the UK's leading drama schools. Adam Workman, 25, will study acting at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, considered the nation's third best training school. The former Sir Bernard Lovell School student has been dreaming of a career in the world of acting and drama since taking his first dancing lesson at the age of four. Membership of numerous youth theatre groups such as Stagecoach in Keynsham, Bristol School of Performing Arts and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, did nothing but fuel his passion towards his chosen vocation. Adam said: "I have always dreamed of making performance my career and now I feel that my dreams have come true." The road travelled this far has not been an easy one. Adam has been attending auditions all over the UK during the past four years,

spending hundreds of hours rehearsing and thousands of pounds in coaching, travel and In 2006 he played accommodation, only to face disappointment Enjolras in Les and rejection time and time again. Miserables "There were times when I just felt like giving up," said Adam. "But I know that every actor has to face the same challenges and so I used every 'Thanks but no thanks' to drive myself on to improve." Having now succeeded in gaining his place, he is looking forward to joining his course in September and working hard in the meantime to raise funds towards the considerable costs of the course. "I have been astounded by the generosity of complete strangers, as well as friends and family, who have contributed to my costs and cannot express my gratitude strongly enough but I still have some way to go," he said. End of an era as Modelmania closes ONE of Bristol’s only remaining model shops is set to close after 33 years of business. Modelmania, which is on Clouds Hill Road in St George will close its doors for the last time on July 7 when owners Bryan and Judith Tozer take semi-retirement. The couple have said that they will continue to run the online and mail order side of their business from the same premises as well as go to exhibitions. Modelmania opened in November 1985 when Bryan and Judith moved from London specifically to start the business. "We were doing a bit of toy fair work in London and were fed up with our old jobs and lifestyle," said Judith. There were a number of model shops competing in Bristol and Bryan and Judith managed to find a niche in the market selling die-cast model cars from well-known names such as Matchbox, Corgi and Dinky.

"It was a growing market at the time with new makes coming out," said Bryan. "Collecting habits have changed over the years and our trade has moved from the die-cast cars to the railways. As the model railway shops gradually closed, we began to fill the gap – railways have always been my main passion." Judith said: "In the past Bryan and I would go on trips to the continent to buy models that were not available in the UK – Belgium and Holland in particular was good for this. "We got some good stuff over there; but now it is more global and obviously the internet has changed things a lot." A number of celebrities have visited the shop over the years including musician Jules Holland and TV presenter Noel Edmonds. The couple have also met other high-profile enthusiasts such as music producer Pete Waterman and the Duke of Gloucester. Bryan and Judith still

Bryan and Judith outside the shop they've run for 33 years have many regular customers. However, the shop has seen a reduced footfall in recent years. Bryan said: "The problem with buying online is that you do not get help or advice. For

example, there are certain sets that I would never recommend buying for a child because it just goes round and round – they’ll be bored in two seconds. But give them something that they can use to shunt and add carriages to and they will be much more entertained.” According to Bryan, the quality of models overall has got a lot better over the years and this is noticeable when compared with the model of the 1950s and 60s – especially when it comes to the model railways. "A lot of collecting is nostalgia; when we first started a lot of people collected the toys that they remember from their childhood. That market is going now because the people that remember them are slowly going as well," he said. Netball academy aims for excellence STUDENTS at the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) have the chance to develop their sporting skills with the launch in September of its junior development academy for netball. To mark the launch, a tournament was staged between Year 7 and Year 8 students from King’s Oak, Hanham Woods and John Cabot academies. Each academy brought ten of their best players across the year groups who will be hoping to be selected for the academy development squad of 32, once they have completed a six-week trial.

Kath Cooper, principal of Post 16 and the driving force behind the team, said: "I have a passion for sport and particularly netball. I believe with the raft of talent we have across our academies, the development academy team could compete with the best of players in the future."

Tea, talk and stories

IF you enjoy listening to a good story, like meeting with friends and having a cuppa and biscuits, then Tea, Talk and Stories might be just the thing for you. The informal group runs every Tuesday morning from 10.30amnoon at Cadbury Heath Library. It’s a drop-in group so there is no need to commit to come every week. Group leaders Jane and Alice provide stories which can be old or new, funny or poignant, but usually provoke lots of discussion. The stories are read out loud by the leaders who stop every now and then to talk about the story and what it reminds listeners of. They usually read a poem to finish the session. If you’d like to join Tea, Talk and Stories feel free to drop in at the library any Tuesday or go along to the group's coffee morning and taster session on July 10, 10.30am-noon.

Volunteers honoured VOLUNTEERS have received royal recognition for helping families with babies and young children. The Barnardo’s South Gloucestershire Breastfeeding Peer Support Project will receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2018 – the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK, and described as the equivalent of an MBE. The project has up to 40 trained volunteer ‘peer supporters’ who help mothers. Weekly groups are held at children’s centres, schools, hospitals and other venues in Kingswood, Downend, Cadbury Heath, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke. More than 1,000 mothers have been helped since it was first commissioned by South Gloucestershire Council in 2011. For information, email nicola.cunnington@barnardos.org.uk

Signs of improvement at Hanham Woods HANHAM Woods Academy is taking "effective action" towards the removal of special measures - but it still has some way to go, according to Ofsted. Louise takes on cycling challenge ADVENTUROUS Louise Towler will be attempting to complete a 520km international cycling challenge this month. Louise, 36, will be raising money for PROPS, a charity based at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds, which helps those with learning difficulties and disabilities achieve their full potential. The bike ride, from June 21-24, will see a team of cyclists pedal through the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England, pushing them to their limit. Each rider needs to raise a minimum of £1,200 - a target that Louise, a Rookies instructor, lifeguard and duty manager at Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre in Soundwell, has already surpassed through cake sales, collections and spin sessions. Louise said: "It’s not going to be easy, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and am absolutely thrilled to have

the ultimate test of endurance at the Ironman event in Boulder, Colorado. She’s set to tackle this challenge – known as one of the greatest across the planet – in June 2020 to fundraise for Cancer Research. Centre manager Martyn Hinam, said: "We’re always looking for ways to support the local community and think Louise and her team have done incredibly well to raise funds for PROPS.A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into Louise’s training and we hope that people continue to support her as she takes on this challenge. We wish her every success for the bike ride and can’t wait to welcome her back to the Centre once she’s finished!" For more information about the charity bike ride or to donate towards Louise’s fundraiser, please visit: https:// mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ blackwhitehospitalityltd44

cycling in Bristol, Bath and Castle Combe. Once Louise completes the four-day challenge, she will immediately start training for a host of events over the next few months. Her training and journey will end however with

Colour Fun Run's back A POPULAR charity 5k event at Oldbury Court Estate will return again this year. The Colour Fun Run attractions hundreds of entrants of all ages who get covered in bursts of coloured powder paint at each kilometre of the route. Proceeds from the event, which will take place on Sunday October 7, go to support homeless charity See Change, the local name for Julian House in Bristol. Gemma Allsop, senior events fundraiser at See Change, said: "The fabulous thing about The Colour Fun Run is that anyone can take part, you don't have to be a runner, you can jog, walk,

hop or skip round the course if you like. "Lots of families take part each year and have tons of fun, so we've also introduced a family ticket meaning you'll save a bit of money too. There will be face painting, music and food and drink on offer so you're guaranteed a fun day out. "It's a great fun event which also raises money for those facing homelessness who need our support. We want to make the event even bigger and better this year and are expecting a sell out so are encouraging everyone to book early." www.thecolourfunrun.co.uk

Look at Mary's glorious garden Boost for charity

THIS beautiful garden belongs to green-fingered Hanham resident Mary Tutaev. Not only is Mary horticulturally gifted - she's also kind-hearted too and will be opening up her garden in aid of St Peter's Hospice. Members of the public will be able to look round both her back and front gardens as well as quiz her for her top gardening tips. Mary said: "I would describe it as a small garden but I don't know the exact size. "As a carer for my elderly mum who is disabled, I garden if I have some free time or some help. It really is my sanctuary and helps ease the stress of caring. "I love the fact that gardening takes your mind off stress and takes you to another place. I've always loved plants and flowers so for me it's all about perfume, colour and shape. I also love the fact that certain plants help attract wildlife so I get a lot of butterflies, bees and birds because I grow plants that will attract them. "It's not a tidy, tidy garden; it's quite 'blousey' with a lot of plants that will attract bees in particular. I have lots of lavender, buddleia, various daises and blossom fruit like cherry, blackberry and strawberry. I tend to use soft colours like purples, pinks and whites." Mary, who won best front garden in last year's

Hanham Abbot's Parish Council's annual Parish in Bloom awards, ran a similar event twice last year, in June and July, which attracted gardeners and non gardeners alike. She also ran the event this June. "Often people ask me questions and we swap tips while we're having tea and cake. It's quite a sociable event. Because the garden is quite small people tend to start chatting to each other quite soon." Mary said she hopes to give people inspiration to create their own sanctuaries, particularly those with disabilities or difficulties moving. "I have a joint mobility disability so I have to garden in a way that is undemanding, for example by using lots of pots, and so I hope to inspire other people who may have disabilities." You can view Mary's garden on Sunday July 22, from 2-5pm at 3 The Barton, off Samuel White's Road. Entry is £3 or £5 with tea and cakes. All proceeds will go to St Peter's Hospice.

KINGSWOOD-based Jessie May are to be given a financial boost after a shopping centre nominated them as their charity of the year. Clifton Down Shopping Centre will now work with Jessie May on a programme of events and activities to raise money for the charity. Jessie May said it was delighted with the support. Jessie May cares for children with terminal illness within their own homes, providing vital respite care, emotional support, end of life care and bereavement support." Little Heath care home complex under way

Left to right: Colin Chiles, Stepnell operations director; Victoria Turner, Brackley Investments senior development surveyor; Jeff Moore Brackley Investments director; Kevin Fairman, Brunelcare chief executive; Steve Boardman, Brunelcare Chairman (centre with spade); Jan Little, Brunelcare director of care homes; Sandra Payne, Brunelcare head of clinical excellence and James Harris, Stepnell project manager

CONSTRUCTION has started on a £8.5 million care home and reablement centre in Cadbury Heath, paving the way for more than 100 new jobs. Local charity and care and housing provider Brunelcare attended the ground breaking ceremony for the development of the new 64-bed care home and 24-bed reablement service, which will be named 'Little Heath'. Brunelcare was joined by Brackley Investments and construction firm Stepnell for the ceremony. Brackley Investments will develop the buildings to Brunelcare’s specification, which the charity will then lease from them on a 25-year term. Stepnell was awarded the £8.5 million scheme by Brackley Investments, who specialise in care home developments. Construction is now underway and it is hoped that

Little Heath will be up and running by early 2020, replacing the former Heath Resources Centre and the former South Gloucestershire Council Newton House care home on the site. Planning permission for the development was granted by the council on April 3 this year. Kevin Fairman, CEO Brunelcare, said: "This is excellent news in that we will be able to increase the number of care home places Brunelcare currently provides for people in the South West region by 20 per cent, along with expanding our already successful reablement service, supporting people returning home from hospital. The versatility of this building will enable us to offer a variety of care and support needs to meet the changing requirements of care provision going forward. This development will also provide over 100 new job opportunities, for both

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY "KILLED In A Coal Mine" was our June topic. The Kingswood coalfield was a dangerous place. From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, there are records of countless injuries and deaths either in the coal mines or in connection with them. Pat Lindegaard led us through the story beginning with researching her family’s early history that led her into the human history of the Kingswood coalfields and the many tragedies that befell those struggling to earn enough in the hazardous conditions below ground to support their often large families. Of great poignancy were the young ages of many of the victims and the terrible consequences that befell the families denied their ‘bread winner’ by the neglect of safety prevalent at the time. On July 3 our topic will be the History of Parnalls, Yate. Initially shop fitters, Parnall & Sons began to manufacture aircraft in Park Row. Later the aircraft business split from the parent company to be known as George Parnall and Company. In the 1920s aircraft manufacture was centralised at Yate, close to an airfield used by the Royal Flying Corps. Surely unmissable! The Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the civic centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the civic centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www.kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20.

Deputy Play Leader Required to help deliver activities at a weekly social club for children with learning disabilities. Saturday morning 9.30am – 12.30pm, term time only. Odd Down, Bath. £9.00 per hour Prior experience of working with disabled children strongly preferred. -

Book Keeper Required to oversee the Charity’s accounting. Daily banking, record keeping, preparing budgets and monthly reports for the trustees. Hockey heroine HOCKEY club captain Jen Clark, of Downend, received the Unsung Hero Award at England Hockey’s awards dinner in Leicester. Without her knowledge, Jen was nominated by her club, Wick Ladies Hockey Club, for her dedication and hard work, both on and off the pitch for many years. Jen lives and breathes the game, with her whole social calendar revolving around hockey. Through her playing, and latterly her coaching skills, she has been instrumental in helping players to develop their skills and confidence on the pitch. Last season, although a frustrating one for her because of injury, she was always on the sideline encouraging her team, who play at The Met Academy in Fishponds. Her enthusiasm was rewarded, as Wick 2nds were crowned champions of Berkeley League Division Three. In her role of club captain she also was instrumental in the club being one of the first in the country to achieve Sport England’s Club Mark accreditation. Due to the success of the year Wick will be starting a 3rd team in September and are holding ‘Back to Hockey’ sessions on August 21 at The Met. Visit www.wickhockeyclub.com for more details.

n FEATURE

A BRISTOL band from the 1960s have finally achieved their dream of getting their music released by a record label thanks to a chance meeting in a pawn shop. Ian Gane, 74, of Downend, sang and played guitar with rock and roll and surf music band The Cobras from 1962 until 1975. It was always the band's dream to win a recording contract but, despite their natural talent and popularity, competition from other bands at the time was too strong. But 50 years on the public has the chance to buy their distinctive and foot tapping music. The story unfolded last year when Ian was in a pawn shop looking at second hand guitars and a man, called Mike Salter, approached him to ask if he played the instrument. They got talking about music and Ian mentioned his old band The Cobras and said that he still had their recordings on original reel-to-reel tape. The man turned out to be a friend of Mike Darby, the owner of Bristol Archive Records, a label specialising in releasing music by Bristol area bands from the past. Mike had been told that no recordings of local 60s bands existed so when he was presented with a package of tapes along with photos and press articles he was flabbergasted and immediately said he wanted to release their music. Now 14 tracks have been remastered from the original tapes, and a CD and digital download will be released at the end of June. The CD boasts 10 covers, including Gene Pitney's Hello Mary-Lou, The Shadows' Theme for Young Lovers and Too Much Monkey Business by Chuck Berry as well as four original Cobras'

31

'Our music dream has come true ... after half a century' Ian Gane

songs including two surf-based instrumentals, Hanging Ten and Goulash. The Cobras were named after the legendary Shelby Cobra racing car and the line 'Hey little cobra getting ready to strike' from The Rip Chords' US hit, Hey Little Cobra. The band turned their back on the music their parents listened to such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and found something they, as teenagers, could identify with - rock and roll. As well as performing covers of hits from the likes of Chuck Berry, Gene Pitney, Bruce Welch, Little Richard, Duane Eddy and Lee Hazelwood, The Cobras also performed their own music. Luckily they had the foresight to record for posterity many of their practice sessions, live performances, and very limited self-financed studio time. The original band consisted

of Ian on lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Paul Mitchell, lead guitar; Pete Relton, bass guitar and backing vocals, and John Williams on drums. Apart from John, who came from Long Ashton, Ian, Paul and Pete all originally came from Shirehampton. Ian and Paul met at St Mary’s Church youth club in Shirehampton and struck up a friendship over their love of listening to American short wave radio stations. This got them hooked on instrumentals and artists like The Fireballs, Dick Dale, The Beach Boys and surf music in general. As they both played guitar they started to play and record their own versions of instrumental hits for their own amusement at Ian’s parents' flat. As they progressed they advertised locally for a bass player and Pete, a devout Shadows fan, joined in late 1962. Rehearsals moved to St Peter’s youth club in Lawrence Weston and, as gigs were being offered, they advertised for a drummer and were joined by John Williams, then aged 14. The Cobras played many local gigs, with set lists mixing both instrumentals and vocals, until 1968 when Ian got married. Ian, Paul and Pete got together again in 1975 for a session at Mafeking Hall in Pilning on the outskirts of Bristol. For the technically minded, Ian played a Watkins Rapier 44; Paul played a Hofner V3 – along with Ian through a Selmer 20

watt amp with spring reverb; Pete played a Vox Clubman single pick-up short scale bass with tape wound strings, through a Linear Concord 30 watt amp. John’s drums are unknown. Sadly, not all the original lineup are alive to see their dreams realised - Paul died in 2012 after battling Alzheimer's disease. Ian, a former quantity surveyor who also spent seven years working in the music industry for EMI and RCA, said: "Tracks 5,6,7,9 and 12 were recorded in 1962 when guitarist Paul Mitchell was still only 14 and when you listen to his playing you'll realise how good he was." Ian, who is married with two children and five grandchildren, still meets up with Pete about once a month to play music, although the whereabouts of John is unknown. "The Cobras were never going to topple The Shadows from their exalted position, but with a little bit of luck, encouragement and guidance who knows what we might have achieved. "The CD should appeal to anyone who likes rock and roll and can remember going to see bands in church halls and youth clubs in Bristol in the 1960s. "It should also go down well with anyone who likes guitar instrumental music like The Ventures or The Shadows. My favourite from the CD is 3.30 Blues, which is our version of the Duane Eddy track. "As a band we had always hoped to get signed by a record label. In fact, the first two tracks on the CD were part of a demo tape that we sent to Pye Records but nothing materialised. We were never in the right place at the right time but fortunately, 50-odd years later, I was! It just goes to show that the dream The Cobras had as a young band has finally come true." The Striking Sound of The Cobras is released on CD and digital download on June 29 via Bristol Archive Records and Amazon. Visit www.bristolarchive records.bandcamp.com

Jim, 69, of Frenchay Cricket Club, said: “It was an utter surprise. It’s a huge honour but I could not have done anything without my wife Sally who has been a massive support as well as lots of people at the club, the youth league and the Gloucestershire Cricket Board.” Jim has been chairman of the Bristol Youth League since 2000 and is a long-time supporter of girls and women’s cricket. He’s in his 24th year on the committee of the Bristol & District League club, and has been child welfare officer since 2005 and first team scorer for 22 summers. resumed with the lead, but 3 of the 4 rinks were close. After the halfway point, G.B. Britton pulled away to a 69-88 win. Thursday June 14: Frys hosted Ardagh in their latest match of the Bristol and District League. Ardagh held a slender lead at the halfway point after Frys settled into the game after a slow start. The game remained close with Frys taking 2 rinks to Ardagh's 1 rink, but the match came down to the final end with the scores tied, Frys held 2 shots, but with Ardagh's penultimate bowl, the count was reversed, and with Frys not able to regain shot, took 4 points from the 46-48 loss. Scores: Rink 1: 11-23; Rink 2: 16-14; Rink 3: 19-11; Frys 46-48 Ardagh (4-6). n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

Two updates of our trials this year READERS of our monthly reports may remember that earlier this year we started a Square Foot Garden and Ern, one of our plot holders built a compost bed specifically to grow giant pumpkins. In previous years, Ern’s best was a mere 30kg. So how are things going as we reach early summer? A Square foot Garden is a raised bed that has been divided into 12 inch squares with the objective to grow different varieties of veg in each square or a maximum of two squares per variety and it is a perfect solution for those that want fresh vegetables but only have a small space to grow them in or have limited time for its upkeep as very little maintenance is required. Our bed is 6x4 feet, however it can be any size that space permits and was made from rough cut timber and posts available from many DIY stores or our shop can supply them in kit form to any size. It was filled using only multipurpose compost and to keep our squares tidy we used nylon string to make our grid, secured at each end and along the sides. Placed in the sunniest position available we first added a row of canes along the outside of our rear edge. These will support the row that contains runner and

climbing French beans in the outer corners. In the middle two squares we have climbing courgettes and alongside these outdoor ‘Burpless’ cucumbers. Moving forward we have salads and dwarf ‘Amethyst’ French beans. In the second row, radishes, spring onions, two varieties of carrots and turnips. We complete the variation in the front with low growing crops of herbs and beetroot, when our photo was taken we still had two vacant squares which allows us the flexibility to add a second crop if needed or it can be filled with flowers to attract bees. So far, some weeding has been necessary but only minimal and apart from initial watering of seeds little more has been needed even though we’ve had a very dry spell of weather. At the other end of the plot, Ern’s rustic compost bed was finally filled with decomposing green waste into which three holes about 10 inches diameter were created and spaced about 20 inches apart. These were filled with multipurpose compost for our Atlantic Giant Pumpkin plants that had been pre-sown as seeds in small cell modules and later transferred into three litre pots. Just before planting the green waste was still generating heat and with

the temperature of the bed at 40c some concern was raised if it may be too hot! But wow, they seem to have loved it as you can see from our photo. Similar to our square foot garden, little water has been added to the bed, the green waste inside appears to holding plenty of moisture for the time being. Though soon we’ll start feeding these hungry monsters, our worms have been busy in their wormery and produced lots of worm wee for us. This is a highly concentrated rich organic liquid feed that can be diluted 20 to 1 for lots of uses around the plot and is better than anything you can buy. But for now at least the plants are sending out leading shoots which will hopefully produce the prize pumpkins later this year. Wish Ern some luck! Our Allotment Shop produced many Atlantic Giant and the smaller Expert variety pumpkin plants over recent weeks which our plot holders have been keen to plant for our Pumpkin Show in October. Some that remained have been re-planted into larger pots to help them maintain a steady growth before moving them to open ground, if you’ve got a little space that you can offer one as a home, pop in and see us soon and pick up a bargain before they’re all gone. Not just two peas in a pod! Our header picture this month highlights a row of climbing peas whose name are worth making a note of for next year. The variety is called Perfection and was first spotted about three years ago on the supplier’s gold medal winning display at Chelsea Flower Show. Our method has been varied each year that we’ve been

growing them and this year we have tried possibly the best and simplest. Firstly, we chose one of our No Dig beds; it’s 4ft wide by 13ft long. We purchased five 2 inch diameter posts, each about 8ft long and drove these into the ground in a line along the centre of the bed. The seeds were sown in two batches about a month apart in early spring using six cell trays under cover, five or six seeds per cell. Being No Dig, the bed needed no preparation, last year it produced a good crop of leeks, as these were harvested the bed was simply raked over with nothing added and it remained virtually weed free. When our peas were about 6 inches tall they were simply lifted from their cells and transplanted into one half of the bed, watered in and then left. As the plants grew they were initially supported by small twigs and as they progressed they have secured themselves to string that was placed along the length of the row, tying it in around the poles. More string was added as they became taller to their 6ft maximum height. The second batch of plants was planted in similar fashion in the other half of the bed providing a crop succession, and as our inset picture shows, more than two peas in a pod. If you’d like to know more about Perfection Peas, please get in touch with us. Bristol East Allotments Association. n VETS' ADVICE

Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

What should I think about before I take my dog to the beach? A DAY at the beach is a great opportunity to have some fun with your dog and thankfully, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches in the South West for us all to enjoy! Plan your perfect family day out with these top tips for visiting the beach. Beach Restrictions Before you load up the car and head off to the seaside, check to see if there are any restrictions for allowing dogs on the beach. Sometimes during the busy summer months, popular locations do not allow dogs; however there are usually areas of a beach cordoned off for dogs or smaller nearby dog-friendly beaches to enjoy. You can usually check online to see what restrictions apply or visit www.thebeachguide. co.uk/dog-friendly for some ideas.

Natasha Watts RVN Nurse Manager

Swimming Dogs are usually a lot more willing to brave the chilly British waters than us, but make sure the sea is safe enough for your dog to swim. Tides and currents can be very strong and although dogs instinctively know to paddle, you may discover that they are not

an expert swimmer! Remember to rinse the sea water from your dog after swimming as the salt may irritate their skin when dry. Keep them safe Be sure to provide them with plenty of shade and fresh water throughout the day. It may also be worth bringing toys to distract them from picking up beach debris or seaweed that could be toxic to your dog. It’s better to be safe than sorry, after all! Pick it up Don’t ruin it for other owners and make sure you pick up after your dog. If it is a dog friendly beach, there will probably be plenty of bins around for you to dispose of your poo bags. If you don’t abide to the rules, then it may influence a future decision to no longer allow dogs on that beach. If you would like any more information about looking after your pets in the summer please do not hesitate to call us at Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660.
