Changes made to breastfeeding policy

Leisure centres act fast after mum's challenge LEISURE centres including Longwell Green and Kingswood have changed their breastfeeding policy after a mum made a stand. Circadian Trust, which runs all South Gloucestershire's Active Lifestyle Centres, made the decision following a challenge from Alvis West. Alvis was with her then seven-month-old baby Rory at Kingswood's pool in April. When Rory started to nuzzle because he was hungry, Alvis sat on the step of the baby pool and started to breastfeed. But she was shocked when a female lifeguard approached her and told her to stop. Alvis, 35, said: “I was sat on the step of the pool and wasn't fully immersed in the water so I didn't think twice about feeding him. “A young lifeguard came up to me and was so abrupt and rude. She said I couldn't breastfeed because it was against company policy and told me I needed to get out.” Turn to Page 13

POLICE are hoping Hanham and Longwell Green Voice readers might recognise a distinctive hat worn by one of the burglars who targeted a garden centre in Bitton. Two suspects took items from Fonthill Garden Centre, on the A431 Bath Road, some time between 5pm on May 26 and 7.20am on May 27. They made off with a range of goods including pre-formed ponds, water features and ornamental stone decorations including a golfer, policeman, gnome and labrador. Police say the intruders are likely to have used a vehicle to remove the items and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a vehicle parked on Bath Road near to the garden centre overnight between Sunday night and Bank Holiday Monday morning. A police spokesperson said: “It is possible that the suspects may be responsible for similar break-ins at other garden centres across South Gloucestershire over the past few months. “We would also appeal to those attending car boot sales or are offered garden ornaments – similar to those described – to contact us. “We are releasing an image of the suspects pictured at the garden centre. It is not a clear image but we hope someone may recognise the clothing of one of the suspects, specifically the distinctive hat which is green with a cream coloured ring around it.” If you have any information which could help, please contact police on 101, giving the reference number 5219117117.

Further details of the complaints process can be found on the Voice website here, or can be obtained by contacting the Publisher. PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Hanham and Longwell Green Voice is independent. Volunteers dropped from Barn Cafe role VOLUNTEERS working at the cafe at Grimsbury Farm have been told they will no longer be needed after a shake-up in how the eaterie is run. South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the farm, is refurbishing the cafe with the Brandon Trust, which will then take over the running of the cafe. The move is part of a project to enable the trust to provide more supported work placements for people with learning difficulties. An official statement was posted on the Friends of Grimsbury Farm's Facebook page. It said: “As from Monday 24th June 2019, the volunteers of The Friends of Grimsbury Farm will no longer be responsible for the management of the Barn Cafe at Grimsbury Farm along with

Friday and weekend staffing. Although this was not our decision we have no alternative but to accept it and so our last day will be Sunday 23rd June. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, some of whom have become good friends, who have helped us to turn a derelict, dirty old building into the thriving and successful business that the cafe is today.” The changes are part of the council's plans to improve the farm while keeping it a freely accessible public open space. Recent work includes new car parking and pathways, animal shelters, petting areas and washing facilities. The council says these additions and the cafe changes will help make the farm better for visitors and animals

alike. The Barn Cafe was created by the Friends from a derelict barn in 2011. Using their own time and donations from the public, they developed and improved the cafe. Initially open at just weekends, the cafe was expanded by the Friends, who, in partnership with the Brandon Trust, have opened it for drinks and light bites seven days a week. The Friends will continue in their role supporting the farm, focusing on events and fundraising. A council spokesman said: “Grimsbury Farm is a crucial and unique open space providing countryside in our urban areas the city; a place to learn, relax, and get close to nature in the heart of Kingswood. We are really excited about working

with the Brandon Trust more closely, but I also want to thank the Friends for all the efforts they have put in to supporting Grimsbury Farm so far. Their dedication and commitment over the years created and developed the Barn Cafe into a thriving business that we can all build on for the future.” Jo Cullum, of Brandon Trust, said: “We are delighted to take on Barn Cafe full-time. We have been operating the café four days a week for the past eight years, providing vocational training and supported employment for 13 people with learning disabilities – and now opening full-time will allow us to provide two more job opportunities.” The Barn Cafe is expected to reopen in early/mid July with new look and different menu.

Thumbs up for new play equipment CHILDREN at Hanham Toddlers Pre-school have given the thumbs up to new play equipment recently installed in their garden. The 'pole jungle' has proved a huge hit with the two, three and four year-olds and is helping boys and girls make the most out of their time outdoors. The elaborate climbing frame, in a shaded part of the outdoor space, follows more than eight months of fundraising, which was organised by staff and the pre-school's committee. Events included a sponsored obstacle course, a Christmas raffle and discos. It was boosted by a generous donation of £2,500 from Hanham Methodist

Church in Chapel Road, where the pre-school is based. Manager Lorraine Bunting said: “It's a fantastic piece of equipment. “The children love it and ask to go outside all the time. The pole jungle completes our outdoor provision where we offer sand, water, mud and woodwork. "Now we have physical equipment so we can cover all areas of the curriculum. “I'd like to add thanks to the church for their donation and to all parents and carers who have supported our fundraising activities to enable us to purchase the pole jungle.”

Battle for drug to help twins A MUM from Kingswood is campaigning for a drug that could help her twin girls lead a normal life. Leanne Barnett was told she would never be a mother after trying to conceive for 17 years. When Olivia and Ruby came along after IVF treatment, she and husband Peter were overjoyed. But a routine heel prick test following their birth revealed the girls had a rare genetic condition called phenylketonuria - known as PKU – which means their bodies can't break down protein properly. Leanne said the family's world has since been turned upside down as they learn to cope with the condition, which could lead to brain damage and learning difficulties. The girls, who are now 22 months, have to adhere to such a strict diet that it means going on holiday and eating out is fraught with anxiety. A drug, called Kuvan, can help them lead a normal life but it is so expensive it is very rarely available on the NHS. Leanne, 42, said: “We had been trying for the girls for 17 years. To have them was amazing and you just think everything is going to be fine. To be told they have this condition was devastating.” One in 10,000 babies is born with PKU each year and there's no cure. Instead sufferers have to stick to a diet that drastically limits their intake of protein. Leanne said: “Ruby is on 9g of protein a day and Olivia 8g and will be for the rest of their lives. To put it in perspective, the average person is on around 40-50g a day.” If the twins exceed their quota, their protein levels will rocket and long-term this can cause brain damage, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression and behavioural problems. Because the girls are absorbing such a low amount of protein, they have to take synthetic protein three times day.

The twins, left. Above, Leanne and Peter with their longed-for daughters

Leanne also has to take her daughters' blood every Friday and send it to Bristol's Children's Hospital where they test it and ring her with the results. Leanne said the condition has completely taken over her family's lives. “It's on your mind 24/7. It's extremely stressful and hard, you can't live a normal life. You can't go out for a meal or on holiday.” “I don't go shopping any more, I do it all online. I would be in a supermarket for hours because I have to check every food label. “It's been even more difficult since the twins have been attending nursery and are away from home. I don't let them go at meal times, only snack times and then I have to weigh what they can eat, put it in small containers and write on them how much they're allowed to have. “Because it's such a rare condition people don't fully understand it so when they're away from me I panic in case someone thinks they

can give the girls something extra, but they just can't have it. It's a constant worry - if they have something they shouldn't the outcome could be horrendous.” Leanne said the only hope her girls can lead a normal life is if they were prescribed the drug Kuvan. “It doesn't work for everyone but the only way we would find out is to try it. It's not a cure but it would mean their bodies could tolerate more protein. I've known people with PKU being on 8g of protein a day and then being able to jump up to 45g, which is just a normal diet. “The NHS won't fund it because it's too expensive. It's available but you have to pay for it and I've been told it could cost £50,000 a year for each of the girls. I can't afford one year, let alone for the rest of their lives.” Leanne has put her name to a petition set up by Barbara McGovern whose son Archie has the condition. She is calling on drug manufacturer BioMarin to make Kuvan more affordable to the NHS. You can support Leanne and her family by adding your name to the petition at https:// bit.ly/2KK0vNz

Hanham Scarecrow Hunt enjoys adde THE number was up for youngsters taking part in this year's eagerly awaited Hanham Scarecrow Hunt. The event, over the weekend of June 8-9, saw the High Street awash with families all trying to name the 43 scarecrows which were located in shop windows. This year's theme was numbers and all the book, film, nursery rhyme and story characters had a figure in their name or title including Goldilocks and the Three Bears, 101 Dalmatians and 2,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Three Little Pigs was the most popular scarecrow, winning prizes for Favourite Scarecrow and Best Made Scarecrow for its creator, Christchurch Pre-school. First prize for having the most correct answers went to Hannah Giles with second prize going to Jacob and Emily Hughes. The annual event, now in its eighth year, is organised by Friends of Christ Church Primary School as a fundraiser and is supported by local shops and businesses. The Friends were also given a donation from Asda in Longwell Green who also lent their Community Champion Susan Grant to help out. Susan said: “Every year the hunt has got bigger and bigger and more and more popular. It was a fun weekend for all the family.” Friends co-chair, Lucy Champion, said the event raised £950: “The aim was to create a community event at the same time as raising money for Christ Church school. The scarecrow hunt is now in its eight year and is really popular. Everyone said what a great event it was. “We would like to thank the traders and the community as well as all the people who made the scarecrows. We couldn't do it without everyone's support.”

Nominate staff who make a difference

OMINATIONS are open for Sirona Care & Health's annual Awards for Excellence – and your help is needed. Sirona is a not-for-profit social enterprise providing high-quality NHS and local authority-funded community health and care services across South Gloucestershire, parts of Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. It was founded on October 1, 2011, and holds an annual ceremony to recognise the achievements of staff close to its birthday each year. Sirona chairman Simon Knighton, pictured, said: "We have always said our staff are the most important part of Sirona and recognising their achievements is really close to my heart. “From the thousands of compliments and letters which we receive each year from people in the communities we serve, we know our staff deliver high quality services, day in, day out. “They all give care as they would want for their own loved one, which is part of our Taking it Personally ethos. "While the majority of award categories are for internal nominations, we have one called ‘I think they deserve it’ and we are looking for the public's help to find a winner or winners.

“We want to hear about the person who brightened up your day because of their welcoming smile or who made a difference to your care in the way they tailored the service to suit you or something else. “Last year, we had so many nominations we gave two awards, with the Hanham district nursing team scooping one and the staff at our extra care facility at St John's Court in Bath the other. People told us about the hard work and dedication of both teams, with the nurses described by one individual as her ‘safety net’, while the team at St John's were praised for making a difference to a tenant's life by encouraging her independence.” If you want to nominate someone, please send details to communications@sironacic.org.uk by August 1. Benches commemorate the fallen

THREE new memorial seats have been dedicated in honour of those who have lost their lives in conflict. Revd Beverley Charles, team rector of Kingswood and Hanham, conducted the service in the Remembrance Garden at the front of Hanham Community Centre. The ironwork benches replace two old wooden ones and were provided by Hanham Parish Council. Each bench is black, with two featuring red poppies and the other a white dove. The first bench is known as the World War One bench and does not depict dates, making it relevant for soldiers serving, and those who have fallen, in today's world. The second is the World War Two bench

The Rev Beverley Charles, a representative from Hanham History Society, Cllr John Ball, Cllr Brenda Langley, Heather Goddard, Cllr Ian Richardson and John Goddard and depicts images of the British Army, Royal Navy and RAF. The third is the Armed Forces bench and incorporates images of armed forces personnel, a war horse, nurse, ambulance and red poppies.

Cllr Brenda Langley was at the service. She said: “It was a beautiful service to remember those who had fallen during the wars and given their lives for our future. Revd Charles did us proud and the weather was kind to us.”

Get set for street fair! THIS year's Summer Street Fair in Hanham takes place later this month. Organisers are hoping for some of the sunshine which helped make last year's event such a success. The High Street will be closed to traffic from 2-5pm on Saturday July 13 while the highway is transformed with market stalls, street food sellers, fun fair rides for little ones and street performers. The talented Crofts End Silver Band will also perform at the event, organised by Hanham Business and Community Partnership. There are a few spaces remaining for street food stalls to book via email hanhamhighstreetevents@gmail.com

PLANS for a “mini football stadium” in Hanham have been rejected following a heated meeting. Residents living near Greenbank Road where AEK Boco want to install four 18m floodlights, two covered 50-seater spectator stands and a 1.8m fence around the main pitch, packed the council chamber at Kingswood's Civic Centre. Despite listening to an impassioned plea from the club's chairman, councillors voted to throw out the plans. Councillors sitting on the development management committee heard from speakers both for and against the proposals but voted four to two to reject the scheme. There was one abstention. The vote went against a report by council officer Patrick Jackson that had recommended they

His illustrated talk will cover the subject from the early 19th century up to date, with the Notre Dame disaster. Roy said: “I'll also hope to bust some of the myths involved, by revealing, for example, the true story about banning conkers in schools!” A small entry fee of £3 will include refreshments. To ensure a seat it is advisable to book in advance. For more information contact the museum, telephone 0117 960 5664, or via email at kingswoodmuseum@gmail.com www.doorexpresssouthwest.co.uk

'stadium' row goes into extra time Floodlights plan thrown out - but another committee has final say support the scheme. Reasons for refusal include the likelihood of increased noise and light disturbance and that the scale of the development would have a detrimental impact on the appearance and character of the area. Councillors also said that the 1.8m fence around the pitch would restrict its recreational use. This is not the end of the line for campaigners, however. The plans will now go before the council's spatial planning committee for a final decision. If the plans are approved, the council will then have to decide whether to grant 'landlord's permission' which will allow the club to go ahead with the scheme. The meeting was at times

passionate, with the chair calling for order on several occasions. Club chairman John Winter told the meeting that the plans were vital in order for the club to progress through the leagues. He dismissed accusations of anti-social behaviour: “The introduction of CCTV and the new facility being used more often has resulted in not one report log being received by the police over the past nine years. “No scaremongering, not fake news, but fact. “We, as a club, have created a community that’s safe, well organised, respected by our local football association and used as a role model club. “In this day and age of building communities, this is

what us as a good community football club are all about.” The meeting heard from parish councillor Bernard Jackson and Hanham ward councillors June Bamford and Brenda Langley who spoke in support of residents. Cllr Bamford said: “Essentially, we are looking at urbanising this green space... the application will significantly impact on their quality of life”. Also speaking was the residents' solicitor Tracey Merrett who said floodlights would be nearer to homes than Football Association guidelines recommend, calling the scheme “overbearing”. She said the floodlights would be a “blot on the landscape” and urged the council to look for an alternative site. “There will be an increase in loss of privacy, antisocial behaviour, swearing and noise nuisance which will be

exacerbated by the intensive use of the site,” she said. Following the meeting Tyler Close resident Steve Ashlin told Hanham and Longwell Green Voice: “I was pleased to see that at last councillors have seen through attempts by the council to push this through whatever objections and concerns to the proposed development that have been raised. “The committee has submitted reasons for refusal that appear to be both sound and difficult, if not impossible, to mitigate.” Resident Kim Madan added that locals still had a fight on their hands: “At last it feels our concerns have been taken into account but we realise this is not a final decision.” A date for the spatial planning committee meeting had not been scheduled at the time of going to print.

Mum gets leisure centres to change policy From Page 1 Embarrassed, Alvis left the pool but was surprised not to see any signs advising of the policy. She asked to speak to the person in charge but as manager Martyn Hinam wasn't there his colleague confirmed to Alvis that it was indeed company policy. Alvis, who lives in Bromley Heath with partner Daniel Gould and their other son Leo, aged eight, said: “I was told you could breastfeed outside the pool but couldn't while you were in the water because of hygiene concerns. I'm sure there are far worse bodily fluids that pass through the pool than a bit of my breast milk, which is a sterile liquid anyway, or a bit of spit up from a baby. I didn't think it was much of an argument. “It was also brought up about babies swallowing chlorinated water but I'm pretty sure, as a responsible adult, I'm going to make sure my new born baby isn't ingesting the water.” After going round in circles, Alvis asked if the manager could call her about the issue. She said: “He called me the next day and said he didn't know why the policy was in place but he would look into it and get back to me.” True to his word, Martyn spoke to his managers and discovered the issue had never come up before. He then went on to speak to Bristol Breastfeeding Mummies, a 5,700 member strong Facebook group, as well as Barnardo's and a breast feeding support charity. Martyn came back to Alvis and told her that, based on his research, he saw no reason why

review what we are doing at the centres and where we could make positive changes. We also consulted with the charity Barnardo's who work with South Gloucestershire Council to run breastfeeding support groups. As a result, mums can now breastfeed anywhere in our centres where they feel most comfortable, including the swimming pools. Kingswood has invested in a nice comfortable sofa, which now sits in the pool changing area as opposed to the plastic chairs; and parents are welcome to use the Clifford Suite when it’s available. “Breast feeding posters have also been updated across all Active Centres and each centre now has its own dedicated private breastfeeding area. “Dealing with breastfeeding customers has now also been included in staff training and awareness sessions.”

Alvis with her sons Rory and Leo she couldn't breastfeed at the pool and therefore they were going to change the policy in all of their centres in South Gloucestershire - Longwell Green, Yate, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke. He also told Alvis he would provide a private room for mums who want complete privacy. Avis, a national account manager, said: “He really did listen and used his powers to influence management to make changes as quickly as possible. He definitely went above and beyond. He even purchased a sofa for mums who don't want to breastfeed in the pool to have somewhere comfortable to sit. “I was really pleased with the outcome. Breastfeeding rates have really dropped in this country so anything we can do to help mums stay on that journey should be welcomed. It also shows other companies what can be done and how easy it is to make that change. “To be able to breastfeed wherever you are in the centre is brilliant – common sense has

prevailed.” Martyn said: “We are delighted we have been able to work proactively with Alvis and draw on her experience to give us a better insight into a very important, and potentially sensitive, area of customer service. “As well as speaking with Alvis, we talked to a number of other mums to help us

Travellers 'did group a favour'

New school gets go-ahead A NEW primary school for Warmley has been given the go-head. The school will share a site with Digitech Studio School in Tower Road and will be run by Cabot Learning Federation. It has a working title of Tower Road Primary and will have spaces for 420 pupils aged four to 11. The school will work in partnership with Digitech, providing a joined-up approach to pupils’ education, including specialist teaching, employability opportunities and projectbased learning and enrichment activities. Tower Road Primary will be the third new primary provision the CLF will have opened in South Gloucestershire, following Wallscourt Farm and King’s Oak academies. The project will be undertaken in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council, the Department for Education and the Education and Skills Funding Agency. The intention is for the school to open to a new reception cohort in September 2021. The school was the only one in the South West to be approved in the latest tranche of investment funding, announced by Education Secretary Damian Hinds. Steve Taylor, CEO of the Cabot Learning Federation said: “We are delighted that Tower Road Primary has been given the green light by the Department for Education. “This is an exciting opportunity for us to build a

Cllr Erica Williams and Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore outside Digitech Studio School and Warmley Park School where the new school will be built coherent partnership between both primary and secondary phases of education in a part of South Gloucestershire where the demand for places is set to rise in the future. We are very much looking forward to continuing to provide great education and serve families in the local community.” Chris Skidmore, Kingswood MP and a Minister in the DfE, said: “I am delighted to hear that the application for this new school has been successful and thank colleagues in the Government for approving it. I look forward to seeing it open and welcome local children in the near future. “Since their introduction, free schools have been a tremendous and innovative addition to the education system, providing a different way of thinking about teaching and learning and I am pleased this latest wave of approvals has benefited South Gloucestershire.”

Cllr Erica Williams, cabinet member for schools, said: “This is extremely welcome news. Our priority as an administration is to help schools to improve standards and help our young people reach their potential, which is why in addition to our own investments in schools we have been pleased to support this project. “This brand-new facility, run by the Cabot Learning Federation, will help to meet the needs of a growing community and primary school population and represents another way we can work together to support the young people of South Gloucestershire as they learn.” Cllr Sam Bromiley, who represents Parkwall and Warmley, said: “It is important our younger generations have the best possible start in life, so it is fantastic that we will soon be able to provide these additional spaces for children in the Warmley area.”

A COMMUNITY group set up to enhance Southey Park has been given an unexpected boost following a recent traveller invasion. Caravans descended on to the park in New Cheltenham Road on June 5 and, despite being moved on the same day, managed to create a huge mess, with litter strewn across the green space. Members of Friends of Southey Park leaped into action to clear the site and discovered the community was only too willing to come together to muck in and help out. A spokesman said: “Normally we get about eight volunteers but this time we had quite a team turn up, including the new local councillor. Everyone really pulled together and showed great community spirit in getting the park back to normal. “I think the travellers have done us a favour, in a strange way. They've given us a stepping stone to promote ourselves so we can say we are here and we want to improve this park for the community.” The Friends are hosting a family festival on Sunday August 4 from 11am-3pm, which will include bouncy castleand and stalls. Anyone wanting to join the Friends can visit their Facebook page Friends of Southey Park or see their page on the My

'It's a dream come true' - skatepark opens at last A £150,000 skatepark which was seven years in the making has officially opened in Warmley. Warmley Forest Skatepark launched on June 9 and is already attracted skaters from as far afield as Cornwall. The project started seven years ago when the old skatepark was closed down due to vandalism. Skateboarder Dan Lacey got a group of friends together and lobbied local councillors to see what could be done at the site. Calling themselves the Warmley Forest Skatepark Group, they set up a committee to raise funds and consult with skatepark users, residents and councillors. Dan Lacey, chairman of the group, said: “After being rejected a few times, we finally got our first grant last November,

followed by another, then another - this was amazing news as it felt like it was all finally coming together.” They received £50,000 from SUEZ Communities Trust, £50,00 from Enovert Community Trust, £30,000 from Oldland Parish Council and £20,000 from Bitton Parish Council. A final grant for £3,000 from a residents' panel from Bromford Housing helped the group reach their target. Siston Parish Council has agreed to cover ongoing costs with a grant of around £3,000 a year. Dan said: “Maverick Skateparks was our chosen contractor and they began building the park in April. Six weeks later the park was finished and it officially opened on June

Netball girls are flying high GIRLS at Hanham Woods Academy had a ball when they hosted an inaugural netball tournament attended and sponsored by the RAF. The tournament, for Year 9 and Year 10 students, saw teams from Hanham Wood Academy, Winterbourne Academy, Bristol Metropolitan Academy, City Academy, John Cabot Academy, Downend School, Cotham School and King’s Oak Academy take part. After a morning of mini league matches, under extremely

hot conditions, a healthy lunch was cooked and supplied by an RAF team of chefs. In the afternoon, the Year 9 final saw Winterbourne Academy beat Hanham Woods Academy and the Year 10 final Hanham Woods beat Winterbourne Academy.

Not only do the RAF support sport at Hanham Woods but they are regular exhibitors at career events at the academy. PE teacher Rebecca Roberts, who organised the tournament, said: “Netball at Hanham Woods is going from strength to strength and there is fierce

competition for places in the squads. This tournament pitted our girls against some strong opposition and was a real test for them. I would like to thank the RAF for their continued support and sponsorship, without them this event would not have taken place.”

Litter fines set to max FINES for dropping litter in South Gloucestershire have been set at the maximum level allowed. Council cabinet members voted to increase fixed penalty notices from £75 to £150. There will be a 50 per cent discount for anyone who pays within 10 days. But despite the proposed hardline approach, the council says it focuses more on educating people than on enforcement, issuing just 11 notices in 2018 for local environment offences including dog-fouling and dropping rubbish. There will be an automatic increase in line with any future rises announced by the Government in the maximum fines that local authorities can charge people for littering. Graffiti and fly-posting will also carry a £150 fixed penalty notice under the new policy, which was agreed by South Gloucestershire Council's cabinet on Monday June 17. The maximum permitted level of fines will be extended to other local environment offences, including putting household waste in the wrong bin (£80), nuisance parking (£100) and abandoning a vehicle (£200), with each carrying a prompt-payment fee reduction. The charges are an alternative to prosecution, although anybody handed one can challenge the notice in magistrates’ court. Prior to the vote, anyone caught littering in South Gloucestershire was charged £75, with a reduced payment of £50 within 10 days. A report to cabinet said extra money from the higher fines could pay for a dedicated council officer on the street to issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs). In 2018 the council’s Viewpoint survey showed 38 per cent of residents believe litter and rubbish lying around is a ‘fairly big’ or a ‘very big’ issue in their local area. In March, South Gloucestershire Council became the first local authority outside London to introduce a £150 fixed penalty notice for motorists littering from car windows. Fines for dog fouling in South Glos have already been increased to the maximum level under different rules.

100 years of GB Britton bowls club A KINGSWOOD man has written a book in celebration of the 100th anniversary of GB Britton Bowls Club which was set up so soldiers returning from the Great War would have a new focus. Member Tim Hughes offered to take on the role of historian two years ago when the club, now based at Ingleside Road, Kingswood, decided to commission a book to record its history as they knew their centenary was fast approaching. Fellow members jumped at his offer saying Tim's “patience, passion and pride for the club” 1 would make him the ideal candidate to come up with a comprehensive guide to the history of the club. Tim said: “Having been a member for almost thirty years, I didn’t want such an occasion as our centenary to pass without recalling and recording our history as a way of thanking

all those who, over the last 100 years, contributed to the creation of the club all members enjoy today.” Two years on, the book has now been published and has even been endorsed by Tony Allcock MBE, 15 times World Bowls Champion and chief executive of Bowls England. In the book's foreword Tony says: “My association with GB Britton Bowls Club stems back many years...I wish you all a very happy 100th anniversary and trust you will all enjoy all the celebrations planned throughout your special year.” Club chairman Peter Coles, who lives in Hanham, said: “Tim took to his task with gusto, meticulously going through the club archives and interviewing long-standing and retired members. “His research found that the club’s earliest records were a “minute” book from 1927 which

web design web development

showed the club had a bank balance of £2-19s-1d with the then chairman quoted as saying 'the club should not worry about winning trophies but rather enjoy the game and show a sporting spirit'. How times have changed!” The book charts the club’s progress from inception to becoming one the most successful clubs in the greater Bristol area. It recalls how the club was originally formed - the forward-thinking owners and management of GB Britton shoe factory wanted to create a new focus for its workers returning from the horrors of the Great War and forming a bowls club was the answer. Through words and pictures, the book recounts the club’s progress, how its close affiliation to the shoe company eventually ended and how a separate ladies’ section was formed. Many of the notable events, together with the trials and tribulations the club faced, are recorded. This includes the club’s biggest decision to move from its original site at the shoe factory to its present site in Ingleside Road and the struggles members faced in raising money to buy the land and build the clubhouse - a monumental task that they undertook themselves.

There is also a record of the club’s successes on the green in both local and national competitions. The book has been well received by club members as well as by other local clubs. Long serving GB Britton club member Terry Lewis said: “I’ve been a member of this club for over 60 years and learnt many things about the club I never knew before. I stayed up late into the evening reading it.” GB Britton Bowls Club 1919-2019 costs £5 and can be purchased by emailing club secretary Roger Britton, secretarygbbritton1919@gmail. com

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR June topic was “The English Civil War”. Professor R Hutton gave us a tremendously moving account of the effects of the conflict upon the population of our land. Using numerous examples of local detail he described the deprivations suffered by ordinary people, whether because they had volunteered or were conscripted to fight, were taxed extensively to pay for it or were coerced to provide sustenance or material to the conflict. We heard many accounts of people no longer able to earn their living due to excessive taxation, sequestration and expropriation, leading to economic collapse and destitution. Meanwhile the death toll was 3.6% of the population – greater than that sustained during the First World War (around 2.6%). There were several massacres of surrendered forces and the civilian populations of communities that had geographically been ‘on the wrong side.’ In some areas communities formed their own armies to keep the Royalists and Parliamentarians away

from their homes. The New Model Army won the Battle of Naseby in June 1645. This broke the strength of the Royalists and King Charles 1 finally surrendered to the Scottish armies in May 1646. This had been a most thought provoking and informing presentation. Our topic on July 2 will be ‘A Tribute to Bristol’s Buses’ - from the trams, whose demise came from a bomb during the Second World War, to the buses we know today. Surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March – December) at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www.kingswoodhistorysociety. org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Katie Gingell, chair of Christchurch Pre-school committee, said: “The money will go towards resources to create cosy dens to support children's well-being, communication and to build friendships. “We'd like to thank everyone who came for their support and we hope they left feeling relaxed and pampered.”

Quarry Court fundraiser SINGER Frankie Johns provided the entertainment when residents and staff at a care home raised more than £350 for charity. The event, featuring a summer cream tea with stalls and entertainment, took place at Quarry Court in Fishponds in aid of Dementia UK. Frankie, from Kingswood, came over to sing at the event and there were also stalls selling sweets, bric-a-brac, plants and mobility items as well as a raffle. Visitors to the event had a welcome drink of Frankie Johns gets residents and visitors prosecco or sangria before at Quarry Court in the party spirit tucking in to a cream tea with freshly baked scones, jam, cream and strawberries. Around 45 visitors, including residents, attended and the total raised for Dementia UK was £356.50. A spokeswoman for Bristol Care Homes, which runs Quarry Court, said: “We enjoyed the day and some of the residents were delighted to win a few raffle prizes.”

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

I’m so proud we’ve set a clean energy record

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

S the local MP I was recently honoured to have been appointed interim Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, a position I am delighted to hold in addition to my role as Science and Universities Minister, and in the coming weeks I will draw from both to highlight the vitally important work that science, research and our universities are doing in tackling climate change and delivering clean growth. As part of this crucial work I was therefore proud to be part of a historic announcement last month, on the introduction of a legally binding net zero emissions target to end our country’s contribution to global warming by 2050. As Energy Minister I am delighted this ambitious new Government plan

will help us take decisive action to mitigate the effects of climate change, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, transforming our economy, creating new economic opportunities and green jobs, and delivering innovative technology to improve our quality of life. Our strategy to decarbonise our economy already saw a great achievement in May when the national grid was run for more than a fortnight without coal, for a record-breaking 18 days. This new net zero target sets an incredible challenge for our country, but one I am sure we can overcome by collaborating with businesses and industry and international partners. This announcement is now more important than ever as we leave the EU, so we can send a strong signal to other countries

Quarry Court

of our commitment to address international problems, leading globally on climate change as part of our vision for the UK’s future following our exit from the EU. Locally, it was also a pleasure to officially unveil the foundation plaque to celebrate the latest milestone in the development of the new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at Bristol and Bath Science Park. The Institute’s work will help contribute to our move towards a greener economy, and crucially will bring great benefits to local residents, strengthening South Gloucestershire’s role at the forefront of advanced engineering and attracting investment, talent and businesses to our local area.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Celebrating the people who keep our communities safe THIS month, we celebrated the men, women and teams who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe at this year’s Be Proud Awards. The awards evening is my favourite night of the year and it is a privilege to be in the same room with so many inspirational, selfless and dedicated individuals. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to send in nominations as the awards give us the opportunity to celebrate our policing heroes for their efforts. To our finalists, winners and everyone who was nominated I would like to wish you a massive well done and thank you for all that you do. We also showed our support for World Elder Abuse awareness day and asked local communities to recognise the value older people bring to our communities.

The awareness day focuses on the problem of physical, emotional and financial abuse of older people as sadly there are a growing number of criminals who seek to take advantage of our senior community. Older people can be more vulnerable to cons, frauds, doorstep crime and distraction burglary and there are individuals out there who exploit the fragility that comes with older age. So I was delighted to see a new Avon and Somerset Police initiative that hopes to tackle isolation within the older the community, the ‘Chat Bench.’ The ‘Chat Bench’ is a very simple concept where a sign is placed on a bench, typically in a park or town centre that encourages those using the bench to have a chat with each other. I hope it encourages

people of all ages to start more conversations as we need to remember that a simple ”hello” could make a big difference to someone’s day. I will also be supporting the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Honour Based Violence on 14 July. The awareness day was set up by the charity Karma Nirvana following the tragic death of Shafilea Ahmend in 2003 and remembers the men and women affected by so-called ‘honour’ killings and honour-based abuse. Forced marriage and honourbase violence are particularly difficult crimes to tackle as much tends to go on behind closed doors and victims are scared to come forward. The victims are sadly at risk from those closest to them – their families and relatives. There is no honour in

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes that cause suffering and in Avon and Somerset we will continue to work closely with affected communities and our partners across health, education, social care and the voluntary sector. I hope on awareness days like this we encourage victims and survivors to come forward and report these crimes to us.

Health initiative launched THE chief executive of Public Health England has been finding out about an “innovative” new scheme to help keep South Gloucestershire residents healthy. Duncan Selbie attended the launch of the ‘One You South Gloucestershire' health and wellbeing initiative at the Park Centre in Kingswood. Executive members from the council’s cabinet and senior officers met Mr Selbie before being presented with details of the healthy lifestyles and wellbeing service. One You South Gloucestershire provides information, advice and support to reduce the five leading risk factors which contribute to premature death and reduced quality of life. The council says the support and advice will help people address key health concerns to become smoke free, drink less, move more, eat more healthily,

Duncan Selbie with Sara Blackmore, director of public health for South Glos Council, and the One You South Gloucestershire team manage their weight and stress less. Murals display academy's values

STUDENTS at John Cabot Academy have been collaborating to produce four eye-catching murals around the school. The colourful murals represent their houses and follow a project where students across all years worked with artist Harriet Wood and youth organisation Creative Youth Network. After a process of debate and elimination, students named their houses after influential people or organisations associated with Bristol. These included the artist Banksy; award-winning animation studio Aardman; JK Rowling, author of the much-loved series of seven Harry Potter novels; and Naz Ahmed, an 18-year-old campaigner and YouTuber. With the assistance of Creative Youth Network, students brainstormed to decide what each mural should look like and what materials should be used. Their concepts and ideas

were then sent to Harriet Wood who transformed them into hand-painted murals which have been placed on interior walls at the academy. The project was funded by Friends of John Cabot Academy who formally unveiled the murals in front of staff and

students. Cal Russell-Thompson, assistant to the senior leadership team at John Cabot Academy, said: “The idea was the brainchild of vice principal, Charlie Hodge, who worked with students, the Creative Youth Network and artist Harriet Wood

to bring this amazing project to life. These murals give every house a stronger sense of identity and link closely with each of the houses’ values, which include compassion, kindness, and unity. These values underpin our community here at John Cabot Academy.”

Fears over future of ambulance stations KEYNSHAM and Soundwell ambulance stations could be under threat as part of a review aimed at improving South Western Ambulance Service’s performance. Under new plans, an extra £12 million would be ploughed into the service to try to reduce demand and improve response times. According to ambulance staff, the shake-up involves the closure of Keynsham station in September with the possibility of Soundwell and Almondsbury stations closing in the next two years. Services would be centralised with the creation of a new hub in Bristol but staff say lives could be put at risk due to longer response times. South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), which runs the stations, would not reveal details of specific changes until it had

finished briefing workers. A spokesman from SWASFT said: “This £12 million investment will enable us to recruit more than 240 additional frontline staff and has provided the opportunity to review and plan where our crews, our vehicles and therefore our stations need to be located, based on analysis of current and predicted demand levels. “The demand on the ambulance service and the nature of the calls we receive has changed significantly over time and some of our stations are no longer located where we need them to be. Many of our stations are also in need of significant repair and refurbishment. “Patients are not seen or treated at ambulance stations and our crews are rarely at a station because they are either treating

Soundwell ambulance station patients at the scene or are on standby at strategic locations across the region in order to best respond to incidents. However, we will always make sure that our crews have a base station to book on at the start of their shift, to return to for their breaks and at the end of their shift.” Jo Fowles, South West Ambulance and Allied Health Unison branch chair, said: “We welcome the planned investment and extra resources being proposed

by the trust as this is something we’ve been calling for for years. “But our members are concerned at plans to close ambulance stations and centralise operations in to one or two hubs for the Bristol area. After a number of occasions where the trust has promised that similar changes will result in better working conditions, more support and less occasions where crews are working over the end of their shifts haven’t happened, staff are understandably cynical.”

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI OUR thanks to Andrew Gussey for his interesting and informative talk at our June meeting about his life with police dogs. Andrew trained dogs as a young man and when working with his father, before joining Avon and Somerset police in 1990. After a few years, the opportunity arose for a dog handler position. He applied and after a two day selection with a dog unknown to him, he realised this ambition. Two weeks before the arrival of his dog, the force delivered to his home everything his dog would need from a kennel, which would be kept outdoors, to leads. Then a German shepherd called Saul arrived and the 12 week training began. Saul was trained as a general purpose dog, being able to locate people in various situations such as missing persons or hidden criminals. He was taught obedience and agility and was groomed each day to create a bonding relationship. After a period with Bath police, they transferred to Bower Ashton. Saul had been trained to bite on command, which proved to be a wonderful deterrent when attending scenes of criminal activity and crowd control. After several years Saul became unfit to continue and the police force paid for him to have surgery and he was allowed to retire. Andrew was given another dog, a spaniel called Jess, and during her training, he noticed Saul was also trying to obey commands. Andrew felt it wasn't the retirement he wanted for his dog so a hard decision was made to find him a new home. Jess was trained to work in drugs and money crimes. Andrew

explained how the dogs are taught each command and drug recognition. Another spaniel called Zeus arrived and the two dogs worked together with Andrew until he had a promotion and left the dog section. Our next meeting is on July 8 (second Monday of the month) in Hanham Community Centre at 1.30pm. If you would like to join us we shall be pleased to see you. Our next speaker will be talking to us about the Queen's bodyguard. Ann Baulch Hanham Evening WI HELLO, hello hello... could well have been the title of our main speaker’s talk as retired police officer Brian Allison told us about his time in the police force. Brian joined the force in Ilminster in 1968 as a bobby when it was more “Heartbeat” than “Line of Duty” and worked in many forces around the west country. Discipline was to the fore and this applied as much to serving officers as the public. Policeman were not allowed to own houses and had to live in a police house. They even had to ask permission to get married. He told us how one of his placements was in Weston-superMare at the time of the “Mods and Rockers” and how he regularly spent Saturday nights and Bank Holidays sorting out disturbances between the two rival groups – as pop star Mary Hopkins sang at the time, 'Those Were The Days My Friend'. Despite holding a full driving licence when he joined the police, he had to use a bicycle to get around before having to take a test to ride a police motorcycle,

eventually progressing to a Hillman Imp Panda car . Brian mentioned how he progressed through the force taking on the duties of a Royal Protection Officer and eventually becoming being responsible for the introduction of helicopters into the force. We hope he will return to tell us about his later life in the force. We also heard from Pauline Sampsom of the Hanham Afternoon WI group who attended the Institute Annual General Meeting. She gave a report of the meeting and confirmed that the resolutions put to the meeting - “Stop the Decline in Rural Bus Services” and “Don’t Fear the Smear” – were both passed with sizeable majorities. Glorious sunshine greeted our final event of the month when we undertook a walk and a treasure hunt around St George Park and Redfield. It ended in the traditional WI way – lunch in a local coffee shop. Evening all… Dianna Coles Longwell Green WI OUR members were treated to a talk about the Queen’s Bodyguard The Yeomen of the Guard at the May meeting. The speaker, Shaun McCormack, has been a member of this corps since 2007. There have been guards expressly for guarding the Monarch since at least 1191 when Richard I formed a guard for his protection but the present company can be traced back to Henry Tudor who embarked England from France with a “private guard of faithful followers” – the fore-runners of the present Yeomen of the Guard.

They fought with him at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Recruitment is from the armed services of people who have at least 22 years service and there are now two women among their members. Shaun told anecdotes and passed round items for members to marvel over – including his jacket and hat which we found were both extremely heavy! He took pains to explain that the Yeomen of the Guard are not the Yeomen Warders who protect the Tower of London, although the Yeoman Warders have permission to wear the same uniform on special occasions. The Yeomen of the Guard are part-time and only called upon for special occasions. They are paid an honorarium for this by the monarch, part of which in times past was paid with beef and beer – hence the term Beefeaters which is applied to the Yeomen Warders of the Tower. At our July meeting we continue the Royal theme with a talk about the “Colourful personal life of Queen Victoria”. Upcoming trips include a visit to Knightshayes Court and Wilton, the New Forest and Poole. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group and regular social suppers. We also meet on the first Thursday of the month at the Chapel Coffee shop in Longwell Green for tea and chat. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. Get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or phone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill

Hallelujah - it's the bark chorus! A HANHAM-based brass band is blowing its own trumpet after their first engagement of the year was declared a huge success. Crofts End Silver Band, which rehearses at United Reform Church in Tabernacle Road, performed at Winterbourne Family Fun Dog Show in aid of St Peter's Hospice. Member Claire Drummond, who plays the horn, said: “It was a lovely atmosphere enjoyed by all, especially our four legged friends and their owners. “Although we were lucky to miss the showers we just about held up under the blustery windy conditions. Our music was pegged tightly to the stands! People came up afterwards and complimented us on our playing which was really much appreciated.” Buoyed by their success, the band are now looking forward to performing closer to home when they appear at Hanham's Summer Street Fair on July 13.

Eva, a border terrier, is pictured trying out band member Ruth Haley’s flugel horn

Claire said the band has vacancies for players and would welcome new members into their friendly team, which meets every Friday evening from 7.30 to 9pm, although this will change to Thursday evenings from August

New Years Resolution? Regular Exercise? Want a challenge?

Claire said: “We are a noncompeting band, and have no plans to compete. We do take part in a wide range of musical engagements throughout the year such as local fetes, garden

parties, Armistice Day, and concerts as requested, where we play a varied programme of music.” To find out more call Denise on 07944 887979 or Claire on 0117 330 6928 (evenings).

n SPOTLIGHT ON FRIENDS OF MAGPIE BOTTOM

MAGPIE Bottom is a nature reserve just off Bryants Hill, where the Stadbrook flows under the Bristol to Bath main road, at Hanham, through Conham Vale, and then to the River Avon. Historically this is the boundary between the city of Bristol and South Gloucestershire. At one time the valley boasted several small coal mines. When these closed a number of market gardens and orchards clothed each side and they also harvested watercress from the brook. In the 1960s small scale market gardening proved uneconomical and with land needed for housing, some was sold to developers for building. The remainder was left and nature reclaimed it. In 1985 Kingswood Borough Council brought the land and now the area is a nature reserve of around 13 acres with a mixture of woodland, grass, pond and steam habitats. The Friends of Magpie Bottom was formed about 30 years ago to manage the reserve, working hard to protect the wild life and the environment while making it accessible to the community. At present about 10 regulars meet twice a

month for working parties, aided by occasional volunteers and groups. These groups keep footpaths clear, repair steps and benches, plant bulbs and trees and keep the vegetation under control. They also litter pick and work with a community Payback team to remove fly tipping. The chair of the group checks the reserve on a regular basis to identify problems. South Gloucestershire Council works closely with the group, cutting grass, felling trees and offering help and advice. Funding received recently has allowed improvements to be made to the previously waterlogged paths and for a larger bridge to be installed by the pond, as well as enabling a 100-year-old orchard to be restored. The reserve is now more accessible and visited by many in the local community regardless of the weather.

Local scouts regularly provide bird boxes and fat balls for the reserve and bulbs and trees have been donated. Plans include repairing or replacing steps, walls and stone bridges. The Friends also intend to install more benches, a nature trail, interpretation boards and way markers. Volunteers are always welcome to clear litter and cut back vegetation. The group meets the second and last Tuesday of every month from 10am-1pm with a break at 11.30am. Tools are provided and you are encouraged to bring along a flask to drink alongside the homemade cake provided by one of the group. For more information contact magpiebottom@hotmail.com, message the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ magpiebottom or make yourself known to the group on a working day.

BOXERS from an east Bristol club came back from Europe’s largest boxing tournament with six medals. Downend Boxing Club, based at the Harry Crook Centre in Hillfields, sent a ten-strong team to the Haringey Box Cup, held at Alexandria Palace in London. The three-day tournament, held from June 14 to 16, was a great event for 17-year-old Taylor Andrews, who was successful in all three of his contests, including stopping a Canadian National Champion to take gold. Five other boxers made it to the finals in their competitions: Jodie Horton, Sharaz Amin, Bailey Phillips and twin brothers Jake and Ben Demmery.
